Welcome to the 2021 edition of The Giving Guide & Event Book. Oh, what a year this has been! So much has changed over the past 12 months. Because of COVID-19, nonprofits went from planning and holding charity events, golf tournaments, walks and runs to creating virtual events or rescheduling, postponing and canceling events altogether in 2020 and into 2021. As many of you know, one of our main focuses here at metroMAGAZINE/ALH Publications, Inc., is shining a light on the Omaha metro nonprofit community and the volunteers, staff and donors who help them contribute to those in need: families, children, the elderly, the homeless, animals, wildlife—you name it. These organizations do so much for so many. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary this year we are even more committed to supporting, featuring and celebrating our local nonprofits and nonprofit heroes. Over the past 30 years, metroMAGAZINE has covered over a thousand charity events, reporting on millions of dollars raised and recognizing hundreds of individuals and businesses who make a difference in our community. It has been an honor and a privilege to be the media source uniquely serving in this role, and we will continue to do so. As I have said before, our commitment is only strengthened by this pandemic. Once again we are honored to pay tribute to the many fine philanthropic and cultural organizations included in the following pages, along with their staff, volunteers and leadership. This year I have had the opportunity to engage with these difference-makers via videoconferencing rather than in person, and I am always inspired by their passion and devotion. The charity sector’s love for our community and our people shines throughout the region. We wholeheartedly share this passion and devotion and thus are dedicated to supporting their efforts 365/24/7. There are so many of us who, like these role models, share this desire to give back to a community that means so much to us. I truly believe that most of us want to contribute, to be engaged, to help those in need and to make a difference. It is my desire and the desire of ALH Publications, Inc., to make giving back easier. HOUSANDS OF GIVERS THROUGHOUT the Omaha metro have bookmarked SHAREomaha.org as their home for connecting with 500-plus nonprofits. These Do-Gooders are continually volunteering, donating, attending events and supporting local organizations that connect their passion to action. The organization’s mission is to help nonprofits fulfill their missions through raising more support and service among the giving public. SHARE Omaha champions “everyday philanthropy.” Its website makes it easy to respond to that cause or burning community need resonating with you, your family or your business. SHARE Omaha’s vision is for the metro area to feel empowered and equipped every day to make a difference. The prime differentiator SHARE Omaha organizers have seen in what they offer the Omaha and Council Bluffs region comes from volunteer interest and connections. One of the key ways SHAREomaha.org increases opportunities to apply skills to nonprofit needs is through a volunteer opportunity filtering system. Have legal expertise? Building a portfolio in marketing or event planning? Construction or home improvement ability? Identify your skills and receive a curated selection of volunteer opportunities.

For the second year, SHARE Omaha rallied the metro around Giving Tuesday with #GivingTuesday402 in the Omaha metro and #GivingTuesday712 in Southwest Iowa. The community’s generosity was overwhelming, blowing past last year’s overall total of $1.69 million – with $3.16 million giving in 2020! In the fall of 2020, the Omaha Community Foundation announced the end of the Omaha Gives fundraising efforts, along with a new partnership with SHARE Omaha. For spring 2021, SHAREomaha.org will promote Do Good Week starting April 19. It will have days directed toward volunteerism applications and wish list shopping and punctuate with a cash infusion to end the campaign. O

FTEN, WE CAN LOOK BACK AT A YEAR and think to ourselves, “What a year it’s been.” We go to work, our families grow and change, the seasons pass, and we might even suffer loss and heartbreak. No year is the same as the last, but most in recent memory are similar, and relatively predictable. Not 2020. It was a year like no other. The litany of significant events is long and varied; in 2020 our communities and families experienced elating highs and devastating lows. We faced an invisible foe unlike anything experienced in nearly a century, and uncertainty has shook our existence to its core. Yet, through all this adversity and uncertainty, our collective spirit of service and genuine desire to overcome all obstacles has created a wave of hope. The way we care for each other and work together as Iowans, ready to rise and meet the challenges facing our communities head-on, illustrates the deep and wide spirit of philanthropy that defines our character as Iowans. The Pottawattamie County Community Foundation (PCCF) board of directors and staff are humbled and honored to be your partner in community-wide philanthropy, and remain fully committed to supporting our nonprofit partners, our city and county officials, and our citizens as we all work our way through these difficult times. We at PCCF are excited to share a few highlights from this past year with you that truly demonstrate the generous spirit and continuous growth and change within our southwest

OMEN’S FUND OF SOUTHWEST IOWA

IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE AND WELL-BEING OF WOMEN & CHILDREN

T

HE WOMEN’S FUND OF SOUTHWEST IOWA, a Field of Interest Fund at Pottawattamie County Community Foundation, awarded $38,640 to four organizations during its inaugural grant cycle. Grants to Kids Place (Glenwood), Essex Child Center, Heartland Family Service, and Centro Latino of Iowa will support programming and projects that are focused on improving the quality of life and well-being of women and children in southwest Iowa.

The mission of Kids Place is to provide a safe, comfortable and nurturing environment for all children to learn, love and grow, and to offer peace of mind to parents through equal, dependable, quality child care. Through purposeful planning, strategic insight, and a collaborative needs assessment within the communities that make up southwest Iowa, the Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa was designed to improve the quality of life and well-being of women and their families. The field of interest fund at Pottawattamie County Community Foundation will support eight counties in southwest Iowa: Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie and Shelby. The goal of the fund is to reach out and work closely with organizations to identify needs and design tangible solutions. Four focus areas include: Education Initiatives for Women of All Ages – Increased focus on STEM initiatives, health and safety, personal finance, leadership, equity and community engagement. Accessible and Affordable Child Care – Accessible and affordable child care and early learning programming, and access to safe and affordable transportation related to child care; Women’s Health, Safety, and Well-being – Services focused on women’s health, safety, education, workforce equity, and well-being. Programs promoting dignity and equity for women and their children. Aging in Place – Programs and services designed to help women age gracefully in their communities, including access to quality and affordable health care, healthy foods, exercise, place-making, family resources, and volunteer services for women aging in place.

Centro Latino of Iowa was awarded $10,000 designated as scholarship support for low- to medium-income Latina women living in southwest Iowa to register for the Southwest Iowa Small Business Development & Entrepreneurship Program. Grant funding will be used to award 25 tuition scholarships for Latina women to attend the 20-hour program designed to help entrepreneurs effectively start a small business. Components will include vision and mission development, goal setting, accounting/bookkeeping and taxes, insurance, employment law, market analysis, marketing, reading financial statements, and financial projections. The mission of Centro Latino is to educate and empower Hispanic/Latino individuals and families towards thriving, self-sufficient and healthy lives. Essex Child Center, a childcare facility in Essex, Iowa, has been awarded $8,640 to support preschool tuition assistance. There are families who choose to forgo preschool for their children due to the added monthly expense, and studies show the importance and advantages of an early childhood education, such as improved social skills, better performance in grade school, improved attention spans, and enthusiasm for lifelong learning. The grant will allow Essex Child Center to enroll an additional 16 children in the preschool program by providing tuition assistance to families. The mission of Essex Child Center is to provide a safe, nurturing and healthy learning environment for children ages six weeks through 12 years of age. Their focus is to provide a stimulating early care and education experience, which promotes each child’s social/emotional, physical, and cognitive development.

“Through the amazing generosity of our community, the Iowa West Foundation, the Lozier Foundation, Jerry Banks, an anonymous supporter, and several other generous investors, the Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa is becoming the catalyst for durable, lasting solutions for the issues facing women and their families,” said Donna Dostal, president and CEO of Pottawattamie County Community Foundation. “We are so excited for the five organizations launching and expanding their programs because of this generosity, and look forward to measuring the impact these programs will create in our communities.”

Heartland Family Service has been awarded $10,000 to support childcare needs and family activities for the Iowa Family Works Program as individuals continue to stay home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Iowa Family Works promotes longlasting recovery for women and mothers to preserve and strengthen healthy development for the women, their children, and the family unit. The mission of Heartland Family Service is to strengthen individuals and families in our community through education, counseling and support services.

The Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa will awards grants to nonprofit organizations who provide services within the geographic area and can demonstrate need and ability to create change to the benefit, growth, education and welfare of women and their families. PROVIDING INSTRUCTION AND SUPPORT TO NONPROFITS

N JANUARY 2020, PCCF launched the “Make It Happen” Academy, a program designed to grow an organization’s capacity by enhancing their knowledge in all phases of fund development through courses and learning opportunities offered over approximately seven months. Funded by a generous grant from the Iowa Council of Foundations and facilitated by Pottawattamie County Community Foundation, Make It Happen focuses on different aspects within nonprofit organizations: annual fund, boards and committees, volunteers, donors and stakeholders, and individual strengths within the workplace. This learning program is based on donor-centric framework of fund development and utilizes groundbreaking data from the Jenni Frumer, PhD, study on what motivates charitable giving to nonprofit organizations. The Make It Happen Academy is designed to provide instruction and support as building blocks for the participating nonprofit organization to develop its own fund development plan with benchmarked, actionable items and outcome tools as well as measurable objectives. Local nonprofit organizations are selected through an application process, and seven groups throughout southwest Iowa were chosen to attend the inaugural series of workshops in 2020—in person and virtually—that were designed to examine ways nonprofits could grow and better serve our community. The 2020 cohort consisted of representatives from the following nonprofit organizations: Crossroads of Western Iowa, Council Bluffs Schools Foundation, FAMILY, Inc., The Historic General Dodge House, Golden Hills RC&D, Habitat for Humanity Council Bluffs, and Midlands Humane Society.

The AIM Institute is an innovative not-for-profit that grows, connects and inspires the tech talent community through career development and educational programs.

T

HROUGH EDUCATION, CAREER DEVELOPMENT and outreach, the nonprofit AIM Institute has fostered the growth of Omaha’s tech sector for more than 25 years. Our programming promotes diversity and inclusion in the tech sector by making outstanding education opportunities and career training accessible to all, from elementary school through adulthood. Our educational programs provide vital learning experiences and mentoring to grow future tech talent, and our career development services, such as AIM Code School, deliver inspirational, leading-edge training and resources dedicated to introducing and converting talent into life-changing, in-demand careers in technology.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES: • AIM serves nearly 200 students weekly, but the need in our community is growing. In the first six months of 2020 alone we served more than 3,000 students. We can take a student through an entire year of programming at the Brain Exchange for just $500. This covers the cost of our amazing instructors, fun, hands-on tech learning activities, and snacks. • Helped 98% of at-risk AIM youth academy participants graduate from high school • Grew the local tech talent community by converting more than 500 people into IT careers through AIM Code School, college and tech access programs, and Tech Career Navigator services

• Provide job shadowing experiences to AIM Code School students and recent graduates.

INCE 1895, Aksarben has been synonymous with philanthropy, community and giving back. Created by a network of influential state leaders, Aksarben’s mission was to address the biggest issues facing the state of Nebraska. The Aksarben Foundation has evolved over time, as have the needs of the state. Today, Aksarben upholds many of the initiatives on which it has focused decades of leadership addressing:

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES: Donations Donations may be made to the Aksarben Foundation and directed toward the program of your choice, or to be used in support of any Aksarben Foundation work. Specific legacy programs include scholarships to two-year or four-year colleges and universities or Aksarben Community Grants. Donations may also be directed toward Aksarben’s Workforce Development initiatives, or to honoring and celebrating Heartland families for their volunteerism.

Aksarben Ambassadors regularly communicate with the Aksarben Foundation to report on community projects in need of assistance, community members deserving of recognition, and to help coordinate meet-and-greet events between the Foundation and their communities throughout the year.

Supporting Heartland communities through the funding of grants helping to address the specific needs of each city and town Recognizing and celebrating volunteerism, philanthropy and community at the annual Aksarben Ball Honoring the hard work and dedication of Nebraska farmers through Aksarben’s Pioneer and Heritage Farm Family Awards Honoring who we’ve been, celebrating who we are, and supporting where we’re going are all important aspects of the Aksarben mission. In 2018, Aksarben announced an important pivot in its work across the state, which really brings all of its important work together. What Nebraska needs more than anything today is a developed and strengthened workforce. Aksarben is dedicated to supporting and nurturing workforce development and talent retention across the state, and intends to continue using its scholarship programs, community grants and recognition—in combination with its focused efforts on workforce—to accomplish this monumental task.

SSISTANCE LEAGUE OF OMAHA is an all-volunteer organization serving Omaha since 1974. The organization returns 100 percent of proceeds, after expenses, to the community through its philanthropic programs. It received the 2020 Top-Rated Award by Great Nonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews about nonprofit organizations. Assistance League of Omaha has also achieved Platinum level in GuideStar and Best Practices status from The Nonprofit Association of the Midwest.

Operation Recovery Encourages the residents of Santa Monica House to succeed during their substance abuse treatment programs and transition back into the community. ACT/PSAT Review Sessions Seminars organized by ALO and presented by professional instructors prepare students from 27 area schools for the ACT/PSAT exams. Assault Survivor Kits® ALO purchases and prepares kits containing new clothing and hygiene products for victims of rape and other forms of violence. Over 350 kits are distributed to 12 Omaha hospitals and shelters. Children’s kits are provided via Project Harmony. Operation Teen Parent Teen parents in the Omaha school district are encouraged to complete their education and read to their children. Almost 900 books were distributed to students and four post-secondary scholarships were awarded (70 graduating seniors were celebrated). Operation Bear Hug Bears purchased by ALO are distributed to children in crisis situations via the Omaha Police precincts and eight other emergency agencies. Over 600 bears have comforted children in the last 12 months. Operation Literacy Reading skills are encouraged and books are distributed to children and adults in the greater Omaha area.

UTISM ACTION PARTNERSHIP Improving the quality of life of persons on the Autism Spectrum and their families through education, advocacy and support, thereby enabling them to be an integral part of the community.

UTISM ACTION PARTNERSHIP (AAP) has served the needs of the Nebraska autism community for over a decade. Over that time, the diagnosis and prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has grown significantly, worldwide and locally. In 2020, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) released a new study indicating 1 in 54 children are being diagnosed with ASD, which is nearly 2% of all children. With the growing population has come a greater array of needs and a greater demand of services for individuals with autism and their families. AAP remains dedicated to serving the autism community (of all ages), as well as creating a more inclusive and sensory-friendly community for those affected by autism to enjoy.

CSI’s nationally accredited Early Childhood Education program provides nurturing care in two facilities that are safe, stimulating and focused on making learning fun. Completely KIDS educates and empowers kids and families to create a safe, healthy, successful and connected community.

HEN WE THINK ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY, we imagine one that is safe, healthy, successful and connected. That’s why Completely KIDS℠ has made it our mission to empower kids and families with the skills necessary to break the cycle of poverty and overcome barriers to their success. Each year, we serve more than 2,000 Omaha-area kids, primarily between the ages of 4 and 14, and their families in working toward this mission.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES: $12 provides a bag of weekend food for one child. $25 provides one child with four summer field trip opportunities to expand his or her world view. $50 funds a Family Night, which includes a hot meal and a fun activity to build and encourage strong family relationships, for a group of eight people. $100 gives two children an eight-week service-learning experience to enhance their awareness of community issues. $250 allows 25 parents of Completely KIDS youth to participate in language literacy classes for one week. $500 funds a six-week cooking class for 15 children that helps them learn about nutrition while providing healthy meals each session. $1,000 provides 20 kids with needed academic support and enrichment for a week.

Our work takes place before and after the school day. We provide a safe, academically supportive and enriching environment in nine OPS elementary/middle schools, a parochial school, several community-based organizations including area homeless shelters, and at our building. Expanded services are offered to the families of our kids in the form of literacy, educational support, mental health services and referrals to other agencies as needed. Completely KIDS works to address the holistic needs of each child through: • A safe environment with caring adult mentors.

CRCC opened its first facility in 1990 to serve children with special needs and their families within the Omaha community. We provide comprehensive care and family support to meet the needs of children. We currently serve nearly 600 children birth through 21 years of age. CRCC remains distinctive to our community. It is the only facility offering a full continuum of comprehensive care and services for special populations while providing all children, special needs and typical peers alike, the opportunity to find security, support and mutual understanding. About Heartland Family Service In 2019, Heartland Family Service connected with over 60,000 individuals through direct services, education and outreach. We offer over 40 programs, and we are able to tailor an integrated, multi-service approach that guides each client toward safety, self-sufficiency, and well-being. We ask, “What has happened to you?” and not, “What is wrong with you?” to each client who walks through our doors. The majority of families we care for are among our community’s most vulnerable populations; 80 percent are from households with an annual income of $20,000 or less. At Kids Can Community Center our mission is to educate, engage, and inspire children through early childhood care and out-of-school experiences.

STABLISHED IN 1908 as Social Settlement Association of Omaha, a focus on children and families was a common thread throughout the first century of the organization. We had our first school-based program in 1916, our first summer program in 1923, and our first preschool program in 1942. In 2009, we rebranded to Kids Can Community Center to reflect our vision and commitment to children and families.

We operate two core programs to support student academic success: Early Childhood Education and Out-Of-School programs. Kids Can provides a setting of the highest quality as one of only three Omaha centers with the highest Level 5 rating awarded by the Department of Education in the Nebraska Step Up to Quality Program.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Mentors – Our Mentoring Program is one-on-one mentoring between a caring adult and a student who attends our after-school program. Mentor and mentee matches typically meet one hour a week on-site at our center.

Kids Can currently has seven sites offering Out-Of-School programs for children ages 5 to 13 years old. Our center at 4860 Q St. offers the widest variety of programs including mentoring, before-school programs, after-school programs, full-day programs when school is closed for conferences/in-service days, an uninterrupted summer program and full-day remote learning options as needed. We also operate five school-based sites at Mandela, Miller Park, Minne Lusa, Wakonda and Gilder Elementary Schools and summer programs in North and South Omaha.

Can Do Event Team – We are looking for volunteers to assist in the creation and promotion of our annual Can Do Luncheon honoring individuals and organizations with the “can do attitude” that make our community great!

Program Volunteers – Volunteers are paired with staff to assist in carrying out program activities in our STEMsmart Academy (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, strength, music, art, reading, tutoring).

We continue to value the belief that all children deserve an impactful enriching educational experience despite any socio-economic barrier they may encounter. Our younger children will be better prepared to enter kindergarten and our elementary students will participate in our unique STEMsmart Academy (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Strength, Music, Art, Reading, Tutoring). Kids Can is a Nonprofit Association of the Midlands Best Practices Partner and a GuideStar Platinum Status Member.

HE MIDLANDS HUMANE SOCIETY opened in 2015 and proudly operates as the first and only humane society in Council Bluffs, Iowa. We directly serve the citizens of Council Bluffs and Pottawattamie County, Iowa, helping with stray animals, owner-surrendered pets and adoptions. It is important to note that our reach is far greater, as we adopt animals to those living in cities far and wide. The Nebraska Humane Society protects, saves, and enriches the lives of animals in the communities we serve.

HE NEBRASKA HUMANE SOCIETY is one of the 10 largest shelters in the country, touching the lives of more than 25,000 animals each year. We are an open entry shelter that takes in all companion animals who have no other place to go. NHS also provides animal control services to Omaha and Sarpy County. We work to rescue and return stray pets, investigate cruelty cases, and to serve our community by upholding the laws that protect pets and people. Staff and volunteers care for, heal and rehome more than 10,000 animals annually. All animals are spayed or neutered and microchipped and have first shots. Many spend time rehabilitating in private foster homes. Others get lifesaving surgeries and treatments.

EBRASKA WILDLIFE REHAB has a two-fold mission: To rescue, rehabilitate, and release native and migratory wild animals back into the wild and to educate people on how to live in harmony with wildlife and inspire them to take action to protect it. Each year, NWR receives more than 7,000 wild animals needing skilled medical and rehabilitative care and returns them to the wild and handles more than 12,000 telephone calls and e-mail inquiries from the public. Wildlife Education Programs: Innovative education programs are a critical part of NWR’s mission. Funding for our out-of-school-time program through Collective for Youth, our High School Science Academy, and University Internship Program keeps these programs in our schools and brings resources to students throughout the state.

OneWorld has served the Omaha community since 1970 and celebrated 50 years of transforming lives in 2020. Partnership 4 Kids’ mission is to mentor kids for college today and careers tomorrow.

ARTNERSHIP 4 KIDS (P4K) provides academic support and career readiness programming to 3,300 youth from Omaha’s most under-resourced communities. Programming consists of a pre-kindergarten through college continuum of curriculum-based interventions that engage participants in their education and expose them to post-secondary and career pathways. Dedicated staff and volunteers steward participants through critical academic transitions, providing structure, guidance and mentoring support. All children have the potential to succeed, but not all children have the opportunities, resources, and support needed to graduate and attain a career. P4K ensures that no matter their socioeconomic status, every child we serve will receive the academic and emotional support, skills, and resources they need to graduate on time and attain a career that enables their financial sustainability. Through these efforts P4K is bridging the opportunity gap for low-income youth, enabling them to overcome their circumstances, achieve success, and change the landscape of our community.

AVING GRACE PERISHABLE FOOD RESCUE Connect perishable food from local food purveyors to nonprofits that feed our hungry, while raising awareness and educating the community on food waste and hunger.

AVING GRACE OPERATES the only professionally coordinated perishable food rescue and delivery service in the Omaha metropolitan area. Using four refrigerated trucks and a refrigerated van, professional drivers/food ambassadors rescue excess perishable food from grocery stores, caterers, event venues, convenience stores, wholesalers, restaurants and other local food vendors. This nutritious food is delivered the same day, free of charge, to nearly 40 local nonprofit agencies that feed the hungry. Food is matched to the agencies’ needs, enabling them to provide wholesome meals to their clients and direct more of their resources to other core programs. These partner agencies receive the food as fresh as Saving Grace does, as food is not warehoused.

During the pandemic, Saving Grace adjusted operations to also provide its unique logistics and distribution services to meet the increased need for food. This included partnering with other organizations to deliver Farmers to Families food boxes and connecting produce from area community gardens to nonprofits for use by their clients. The pantries, shelters, transitional living facilities, after-school programs, onsite meal programs, senior citizen centers and clinics Saving Grace partners with requested more food because of increased food insecurity. During 2020, Saving Grace was able to help meet these needs, as the 1,347,981 pounds of nutritious perishable food redistributed was 25% more than was rescued in 2019. Since operations began in 2013, Saving Grace has rescued 5.3 million pounds of food. This translates to nearly 2,685 tons of food that has been kept out of our landfills where it would have created harmful methane gas that contributes to global climate change.

The Siena Francis House welcomes and empowers those experiencing homelessness to navigate their path to housing.

OUNDED IN 1975, the Siena Francis House’s ultimate goal is to end homelessness by helping our clients achieve permanent, stable housing out in the community. In support of this effort, Siena Francis House provides shelter, food, clothing and other emergency services to individuals experiencing homelessness—24/7, 365 days a year—with concurrent case management services to help clients develop their housing plans and strategies. In addition, Siena Francis House provides residential addiction rehabilitation services to people experiencing homelessness or are at-risk, due to substance abuse disorders, as well as Permanent Supportive Housing for formerly homeless, disabled clients. Siena Francis House programs and services are located in six facilities north of Nicholas Street and bounded by 16th and 18th Streets in north downtown Omaha. The Siena Francis House also provides facility space for partnering organizations that provide housing resources, medical and mental healthcare and other services that our clients may need. Exercising a policy of unconditional acceptance, Siena Francis House provides low-barrier services to clients with the respect and dignity they deserve, including those often viewed as “most difficult to serve”: the chronically addicted and mentally ill homeless persons who may not currently be in treatment or taking medication.

Additional Siena Francis House Information: • Is a 501(c)(3), independent, nondenominational, nonprofit charitable organization, with all financial support able to be deducted, by donors, to the full extent of the law. • Charity Navigator – America’s largest independent evaluator of nonprofit organizations has awarded the Siena Francis House their highest rating—4 Stars—in recognition of our commitment to utilize financial contributions efficiently, ethically and responsibly in the furtherance of our mission. • Siena Francis House opened a new emergency shelter facility in December 2019, which provides temporary, safe and secure housing, clothing and personal care items for 450 individuals experiencing homelessness. • Siena Francis House serves three meals each day for our residents and other food-insecure members of our community. • Siena Francis House operates an 80-person Miracles Addiction Treatment & Recovery Program—including transitional housing—in our renovated Baright Building, which opened in November 2020. • Siena Francis House provides Case Management services, which link guests to resources, programs and services to help them be housed—and maintain housing—out in the community. • Siena Francis House offers 48 permanent supportive housing apartments for disabled, formerly homeless individuals, with co-located case management services, to help residents maintain stable housing. 2021

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Siena Francis House’s main volunteer activity is serving meals to our guests. Lunches and dinners are served by outside volunteer groups daily. Meal-serving volunteers dish up food onto trays, serve the trays of food to our guests, and clean and sanitize tables and chairs. Lunch volunteers are needed from 10:45 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Evening dinner meal volunteers are needed from 4:15 until 6:15 p.m.

Other volunteer opportunities include: helping prepare meals in the kitchen; working on our donation dock; assisting with laundry; facilitating guest transportation; and helping with special projects and special events that arise from time to time. Stephen Center partners with the community, families and individuals to overcome homelessness, addiction and poverty.

S

INCE 1984, STEPHEN CENTER serves homeless and low-income individuals in Omaha. Founders Sharon and Dick McNeil’s goal was simple: provide food, shelter and safety to those in need. They bought an old bar in south Omaha, laid mattresses on the floor, and found resources for meals. Since then, Stephen Center has expanded its mission and services to serve over 1,400 men, women and children annually through three CARF-accredited programs:

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES: Monetary Donations help the Stephen Center serve over 250 people on our campus daily, providing basic needs like food, shelter and clothing, as well as life-changing counseling and case management. Donations can be made in several ways: • Online at www.stephencenter.org

The Pettigrew Emergency Shelterprovides shelter, meals and clothing for homeless men, women and children. The shelter has beds for 32 men and 32 women, as well as up to five family units. Shelter clients meet regularly with a Stephen Center case manager to develop and implement a plan to emerge from homelessness and regain independence and stability. In 2019, the average shelter stay was 33 days with 86% exiting to permanent/positive housing destinations.

The HERO Program (Health, Empowerment, Responsibility, and Opportunity) is a CARF-accredited, 64-bed state licensed substance abuse treatment program assisting those who have made a commitment to overcome the life-destroying effects of drugs, alcohol and co-occurring mental illness. The facility combines lowincome housing and substance abuse treatment focusing on homeless and low-income individuals. In addition to inpatient services, HERO provides substance abuse evaluations, and intensive outpatient treatment services. In 2019, 291 (38%) people graduated from the program.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Stephen Center offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups, including:

Stephen Center’s Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) Apartments provide housing and voluntary access to supportive services for people moving from homelessness to independent, supportive living. Tenants live in a stable environment, increase life skills and income, and gain control over decisions that impact personal and familial needs. There are 61 PSH units for rent to those who meet income and disability qualifications. In 2019, the average length of stay was 2.5 years with 93% exiting to permanent/positive housing destinations.

OUTH EMERGENCY SERVICES Youth Emergency Services assists youth experiencing homelessness and near homelessness by providing critically-needed resources which support them in their desire to be self-sufficient.

F

OR THE LAST 46 YEARS, Youth Emergency Services has been providing services and programs to homeless and near-homeless youth ages 12-21.

Programs offered: • Street Outreach / Street Outreach Center: YES Outreach Staff seek out youth in crisis and offer basic need items and emergency supplies. Youth are invited to visit the Street Outreach Center to receive additional services including a hot meal, a warm shower, laundry services and the opportunity to meet with a nurse. • Emergency Shelter:A short-term housing solution for youth needing immediate shelter. • Maternity Home: A program that supports and provides long-term housing for pregnant and/or parenting teen mothers. • Transitional Living Programs: Offers youth long-term services while living in apartment-style housing and working with case managers to set and accomplish goals. • Rapid Rehousing: Assists youth ages 18-24 in living in their own apartments. YES subsidizes their rent and provides support and services as needed.

Causes of youth homelessness: • Abuse: Nearly half of homeless and runaway youth cite physical or sexual abuse as the reason they left home. • Foster care: Foster care youth are discharged from the state at age 19, often lacking income, education and social support. • Sexual orientation: More than 25% of LGBTQ teens are rejected by their families and end up on the streets. • Pregnancy: Many young mothers run away or are kicked out because they are pregnant. Effects of youth homelessness: • Instability: With no permanent address, it’s virtually impossible for homeless youth to attend school, get a job and secure housing. • Survival sex: One in four youth has traded sex for survival means such as food, clothing and shelter. • Violence: This year, more than 6,000 homeless youth will die from assault, illness or suicide.

Tip Top Thrift Shop is a committed partner in raising funds for YES. Help our mission prosper by sorting donations, cashiering or assisting customers at the store. The event also brings the community together for networking and inspiration.

Event Description/Theme: The Aksarben Ball is an annual event to raise funds for the Aksarben Foundation and support the initiatives of education, community and workforce development. The Aksarben Ball is a long-held tradition during which the Aksarben Foundation honors the volunteerism and philanthropy of the citizens of Nebraska and western Iowa. The event includes distinctions for all ages and includes pages, standard bearers, princesses and escorts, and Court of Honor. The event culminates with the highest distinction of Aksarben’s Most Honored Citizens.

Event Description/Theme: In this groundbreaking series, we challenge AMB company artists to create solo dance works that reflect their personal visions, ranging from original responses to this unique period in time to the exploration of existing works that challenge their growth as artists. The company provides studio work space and mentorship for our artists. Then, documentary filmmaker Lance Glenn produces videos of selected works, combining behind-the-scenes insights with a unique visual interpretation of the finished performance.
