An Open Letter to my friend who supports Mitt Romney. My brother, sorry I took so long to get back to you on this issue, and you have brought forth a valid point... Should we vote for a president that advocates killing children? Before I address that point let me just explore a few other points first. President or Boss? The character of Mr. Romney is not one of a president. But that of a Boss whom exerts his power and influence over his employees... Saying anything and expecting them to agree, simply because he said it, rather right or wrong, insulting their intelligence and daring them to speak out! 3

Undocumented Americans and their Children The Dream Act - Mr. Romney does not support a direct path to citizenship for undocumented Americans and has stated he favors “self deportation”.

Mr. Romney says that people who are undocumented Americans should “self deport". Since they won't be able to get employment??? His chief policy writer and adviser on immigration is the guy who wrote the bill in Arizona that says its ok to stop and search anyone who “looks" like they may be an undocumented person. Would you really support a candidate that embraces the person who believes, supports, and carries out (through Arizona law) the at will ability to detain, arrest, and strip search (the police can do it if they “believe" it's reasonable). How could you in any way favor the possibility of this happening to your daughter, your wife, or your abuela! Lilly Leadbetter Mr. Romney would not say in his last debate, nor after being asked on several occasions that he will support equal pay for your daughter and wife. While the Lilly Leadbetter Acts does not directly speak to the business owner mandating salary equality, it does however make provisions for those who are discriminated against to file legal suites. The 47% While much has been made about Mr. Romney not caring about almost half of the country, and that is debatable; the fact that he stated that 47% of Americans want handouts and won't take responsibility for their lives is not. That was clearly stated. “I Like to Fire People” Mr. Romney has said, “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me". Note: I personally have ran several businesses and fired quite a few people and I have never “liked having to do it, because I know that it not only effected the individual, but it disrupted the lives their family, as well. Limiting Voting time and other suppression actions Republican lead elections boards are taking actions which seek suppress the number of voters, claiming fraud as the reason. Note: that since the year 2000 and hundreds of millions of votes cast, only 2068 cases were reported with a total of 633 actual incidents being verified; that equates to about 53 votes per year! Yet republicans have sought to impose restrictions to limit voting time, mandate IDs, posted imprisonment warnings/fines, all focused in minority neighborhoods which are most likely to vote for the president. And they have even gone so far as to print out spanish voter pamphlets with the wrong date on them so that they would miss out on voting altogether! Flip-Flopped Mr. Romney has flip-flopped (taken for and against positions) on the following positions. Pell grants - for lower income students, FEMA, Row Vs Wade, Nuclear Talks with Iran, Universal Health Care, A Woman’s Right to Choose, and more. Jobs Heres a snap shot... A company controlled by Bain Capital ( Mr. Romney owns 51%), called Sensata, which is Illinois is closing and moving to China despite that fact that the 2nd & 3rd quarters they had record profits of almost $1 billion!!! Mr. Romney could save these people's jobs with one phone call. Here's my 4

thought... If he would allow this while running for office and talking about creating jobs, just imagine what would possibly happen when the spotlight is off! When no ones looking!

The point

Do you truly believe the President, a seemly good family man and a father, who does claim a relationship with Christ (who knows the condition of his heart) really believes that children should be murdered? I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think so. However the Child Soldiers Prevention Act which our president has waived for several countries for several years was put in place to stop our funding support for countries which use child in warfare. It is a good policy and below is the presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s memo waving it. Here is the Memorandum in its entirety. MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY OF STATE SUBJECT: Determination with Respect to the Child Soldiers Prevention Act of 2008 Pursuant to section 404 of the Child Soldiers Prevention Act of 2008 (CSPA) (title IV, Public Law 110-457), I hereby determine that it is in the national interest of the United States to waive the application of the prohibition in section 404(a) of the CSPA with respect to Libya, South Sudan, and Yemen; and further determine that it is in the national interest of the United States to waive in part the application of the prohibition in section 404(a) of the CSPA with respect to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to allow for continued provision of International Military Education and Training funds and nonlethal Excess Defense Articles, and the issuance of licenses for direct commercial sales of U.S. origin defense articles; and I hereby waive such provisions accordingly. You are authorized and directed to submit this determination to the Congress, along with the accompanying Memorandum of Justification, and to publish the determination in the Federal Register. We all understand that in almost every bill or policy there ramifications that go further than the surface of that policy itself. We would need to be privy to all of the information to make a fully informed decision,; Which we have neither the time nor the access. So it boils down to the character of the individual. When our President says that it is in the national interest of the United States that we waive the prohibition that leaves us one question... Do we trust the character and judgement of our President. Barack Obama as I have seen and as reported by the mainstream press has done nothing to suggest that his character and judgement is less than sound. However on the other hand theres Mit Romney... What Are You Asking God For? Our prayer life can often involve a list of things that are physical and material. We can often ask for things that will probably rot and rust and grow moldy and useless over time. But there are a few things that I can think to ask for that never grow old over time. One of the things that I have been asking the Lord for along with grace, mercy and forgiveness of sin is wisdom and knowledge. I realize that I need wisdom and knowledge to help me navigate along this road of life. But I don't need just any type of wisdom and knowledge.

God for a more honorable position, a title in front of our name, a seat in high places, long life, or the heads of our enemies. But those things can lead to idolatry if we place to much emphasis on them. But without the wisdom that is necessary to know how to manage these things we What I notice is that we as followers won't keep them long. Not the God that we won't be able to see the new enemies that are coming have created in our own minds. BO KNOWS BASEBALL!

HOUSTON -- The realization he was managing his hometown Astros struck home for Bo Porter, when he was taking his 4-year-old son, Bryce, to preschool before driving to Minute Maid Park for his first day on the job. "While I'm driving him to school, one of the things he said was, 'Daddy, I'm so glad you're home and we don't have to go to the baseball house anymore and we get to stay here,'" Porter said. "That sends chills down your spine." The "baseball house" was where the Porter family, which consists of his wife, Stacey, and their young son, would spend the summers while Bo was coaching. It had been in the Washington area the previous two years and Phoenix the four years prior, but it certainly wasn't home. Things have certainly changed for the better for the Porter clan, which will now be able to call Houston home year-round after Bo Porter was hired to manage the Astros. He was introduced to the media on Thursday at Minute Maid Park, with his wife and parents glowing with pride in the audience. "I'm overly elated and thrilled," said his father, Irving Johnson, who lives in New Jersey. "It's something we knew would come and we look forward to it. Now this day is here, I'm just so 10

excited for Bo, excited for the Houston Astros organization and excited for our family. I'm just totally elated about everything." Perhaps no one was more thrilled than Bo's mother, Beverly Porter, who lives in Houston and labeled Thursday as the best day of her life other than the birth of her three sons (Bo is the oldest). She's a cancer survivor and a contented mother. "I'm so proud of him," she said. "It's a challenge, but he's always up for a challenge." The chance to see her son more gives Beverly hope she'll finally be able to spend a birthday with Bo. Alas, the Astros are playing the Rangers in Arlington when Bo turns 41 on July 5, but miles haven't been able to lessen their bond. "My mom has been on this journey with me the entire time," Bo said. "I'm so glad [my family is] able to share it with me. My mom, one of the things that I prayed for when she was battling cancer, I said, 'Lord, please allow my mom to be here when I am blessed to manage a Major League Baseball team.' And not only did God deliver on his promise, he delivered it in Houston. So I thank Him, and I thank my family for being here today."

HOUSTONâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S MINUTE MAID FIELD Being able to keep the family together for spiritual and emotional support is one thing, but the logistics of living in one city in the summer, another in the spring and another in the fall presented a different set of challenges. The Porters have called Houston home for nearly two decades and currently have a house in a suburban community in Fort Bend County, immediately southwest of the city. The drive to Minute Maid Park is less than 30 miles, so the days of long commutes are over. "It took a lot of energy that you put into traveling someplace and getting there and getting comfortable," Stacey Porter said. "You'll get to Spring Training and then it's time to say goodbye to all our comforts in that city. You get yourself from Spring Training to the season, and before you know it's time to go back home. Now it will happen less." As a kid growing up in New Jersey, Bo Porter's life was centered on sports. When the three Porter boys weren't outside shooting baskets, they were playing tackle football in the yard or organizing pick-up baseball games with neighborhood kids. "It didn't matter what season it was: Bo played baseball, Bo played football, he played basketball," his mother said. "I was constantly on the go because it was something that he wanted to do, but we made sure education came first. That was my main goal. If he wanted to play these three sports, he had to bring me great grades." Porter spent the previous two seasons as third-base coach of the Washington Nationals and worked the four seasons prior to that as the third-base coach of the Arizona Diamondbacks, except for a three-month stint as the team's bench coach. Along the way, he's interviewed for managerial jobs with Florida and Pittsburgh, but nothing tops a chance to manage the Astros. "I selected them before they selected me," he said. Stacey Porter is a native Houstonian who ran track and played volleyball at Westbury High School in Houston's west side. The two met on her first day of classes at the University of Iowa when they passed on a sidewalk and Bo stopped to introduce himself. He was a twosport star -- he played football under legendary coach Hayden Fry -- and later played parts of three seasons in the Major Leagues before getting into coaching. 12

His father, our own Rev. Irving Johnson saw leadership skills in his son at an early age, when Bo would organize neighborhood playoffs in various sports at 8 years old. Johnson envisioned his son one day doing great things in sports. "He was a leader among his peers and always had a good head on his shoulders," he said. "He just always had a love of sports. Bo was an athlete growing up and he had a love for competition and to be excelling -- to be the best he can at whatever he set out to do. He was an excellent child growing up. We really had no problems with him."

Rev. Johnson, who closely resembles his son, was a proud father on Thursday. And he has no doubts his son is the right man for the job in Houston. "I know he's true to his commitment because that's the heart of the man," he said. "I know he's going to be true to himself. There's no doubt in my mind that this program will come up because they have the right man at the helm. As I told Bo, they had a great season in Washington, but better days are yet to come and greater things to come in Houston." -mlb.com 13

Just A Few Transformational Church Principles - Curtis Mincey

There is a serious need and desire to see cities and lives transformed through the word of God. Churches all across the world are on the front line of that transformational battlefield. A lot of congregations may have a duel desire to see their churches filled with people and the lives of those people transformed. But while the seats are being filled and the buildings are getting larger we cannot forget that our mission doesn't just end there. There is a real desperate need for all of the members of the body of Christ to go out into the world and to preach and teach the word of God to all people. Yet there are certain principles that can be applied that will allow the communities we live in to see the grace of God and the love of Christ. 1. One of the first things we can do is understand the needs of the community we minister in: and work together to meet the physical and spiritual needs of that community. This will open the door to communicating the gospel and being a living example of hope and victory. 2. Ministry leaders should continue to demonstrate their 18

passion for God, for His word, His mission, and the transforming power a relationship with God has over the lives of real people. Sometimes that may require transparency and honesty. This will allow people to see how the Lord has truly delivered you and transformed you into a new person. In this way people will be able to visually see the evidence of the power of God. 3. We should connect with one another and make an effort to encourage, inspire, and develop long term relationships. Not just with those within our immediate circle of influence. But with people outside of our comfort zone. 4. Individually and corporately we should develop a habit of communicating with God in prayer about our hope for transformation and a spiritual revival for our communities. We should place an importance on a dependence of prayer and not merely a program for prayer. Prayer should be a lifestyle and not entertainment. 5. When we come together to worship God there should be an expectation of something great happening even if it

doesn't happen to us personally. Trusting God to bring about transformation instead of tying to manipulate people to respond to the music or to the preacher. 6. Developing ideas that will bring congregations together to work together to build up the body of Christ; so the community can see the body of Christ working together as a whole unit and not divided pieces. 7. Our goal should be on training disciples to become disciple makers. Preparing them to engage the world with the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ in such a way that they are not embarrassed or confused about the gospel. 8. We should take the time to help members within the congregations how to recognize their spiritual gifts. This will allow each member to be more effective within the body. This will allow people to know what it is that God has called them to do. Then we should train them and give them the resources they need to operate within these gifts.

F TRANSFORMING E YOUR HOME: Winter Lawn Care Rev. Walter Morris Most people have a love/hate relationship with their lawns. They love it when their lawn looks great, but hate to cut and care for it. Consequently, they tend to pay little attention to their lawns until it's full of crabgrass and begins to beg for attention. Now that winter is fast approaching you may wonder what can be done to begin the process to improve the appearance of your lawn. Homeowners make three common mistakes: • • •

They let the grass starve, thereby letting the lawn go into the winter without the kind of nourishment that can really build up the roots. They allow tree leaves to smother the grass, robbing the lawn of the sunlight it needs. They discontinue mowing. Grass should be mowed until it stops growing. Maintain the same mower height setting throughout the fall. Don't be tempted to mow the grass short going into winter.

What you can do now in November to prepare your lawn for the winter. 1) You need to fertilize your lawn before the extreme cold hits. Your lawn will need food to aid in root growth throughout the winter and to help it produce a stunning green when spring finally arrives. 2) Many people think that they no longer need to water their lawns with the fast approaching winter knocking at the door. This is not true. Now, more than ever, your lawn needs water. It will need water to absorb the fall fertilizer and to grow strong roots. So continue to water your lawn until true winter arrives.

3) It's time for weed killer. Buy a broad leaf weed killer and apply it before the temperatures drop below 50 degrees during the day. 4) Keep the leaves off your lawn. Rake those leaves up as they fall. Your grass needs sunlight and leaves will gradually kill it. They will also breed disease if you let them lie on the lawn throughout the winter months. Your grass will wither and die with leaves on top of it. 5) Fall is the time for grub control. You will find that adult beetles lay their eggs throughout your grass in July and August. The grubs will grow throughout the winter and they will eat the roots of your grass. This will cause loss of growth and bare spots when spring arrives. Fall is the ideal time to buy insecticide and practice strong grub control. 6) Mow your yard. Try to keep your grass two inches high for the coming winter. Grass that is longer will mold under the snow and the results will be horrific when spring arrives because there will be large dead spots. Grass that is shorter then two inches will die. 7) Make sure all toys, lawn furniture, fire place pits, barbecues, and anything else is removed from your yard. If you have these sitting on your lawn throughout the winter, the grass will die in these spots and it might also make the yard more prone to sickness as the grass molds and decomposes under the weight of the various things. These tips should help you prepare your lawn for the winter so your lawn can have a good start when spring arrives. Weekly or bi-weekly lawn care does not have to be expensive, whether you do it yourself or have a professional do it whose prices are reasonable for you. The Collaboration for Transformation forum proved to be quite successful in that members of the public, clergy, and ReMA Â (The Resident Minister's Alliance) got a chance to address members of the Newark City Council, Beth Isreal Medical Center and members of major service organizations. City administrator and former judge Julian X. Neal's fielded most of the questions from those in attendance with detailed precision and with surprising compassion for the city and its residents. Councilwoman Mildred Crump spoke passionately against the MUA (Municipal Utilities Authority) with respect to Newark's water management and 26

expressed great disappointment in the administration's continued desire to go against the Council and the residents' wishes not to have a MUA placed in authority over the city water supply. The ReMA board members, Dr. Bernard Wilks/President, Dr. Gloria Harris/ Secretary, Pastor Paul Valerius/Treasurer, Dr. Mamie Bridgeforth/Trustee, Dr. Aubrey Gregory/Trustee, and Pastor Marcus Johnson/Trustee were introduced. The various committee heads, Rev. Irving Johnson/Social Concerns, Pastor Allan Guevara/Education & Training, Pastor Harold Vaughn/Media & Public Relations, Minister Charles Smith/Membership, and Pastor Anna R. Schell/Government Relations (Interim), Â were also introduced

and spoke of their commitment to building a better Newark and the methods by which they planned to achieve their goals. Councilman Ron Rice, although only staying briefly due to other appointments, expressed his delight and appreciation for the work which ReMA had chosen to undertake. The event was held in the fellowship hall of Metropolitan Baptist Church and received a resounding endorsement by its pastor the Reverend Dr. David Jefferson Sr.. Pastor Jefferson also took a special moment to note the tireless leadership of Apostle Bernard Wilks who was not only his colleague, but his friend; As he

promised his continued support for the work of ReMA. Others of note in attendance included the former NJ Secretary of State “Buster" Soaries, Essex County Urban League president Vivian Cox Fraser, the Chairman Behavioral of Health at Newark Beth Israel Hospital, Dr. Trevor Forbes, Columbia University professor and advisor to the Newark Water Group, Dr. Brendan O'Flaherty, Essex County Freeholder (and chief of staff to Senator R. Rice, Sr.), Rufus Johnson, Founder of Evangelism Explosion, Dr. Bill Iverson, UMDNJ Health Clinician Jacelyn Matthews. Downed Power Lines Wires installed on utility poles carry electricity. And when wires are down, they are dangerous—electricity can still flow through them.

Never assume that a downed power line is not energized, as it still could be “live.” TO REPORT A DOWNED WIRE: Call 1-800-436-PSEG and tell PSE&G the nearest cross street or the number of a nearby pole that has not been damaged and is away from any downed wires. The pole number can be found on the metal tag attached to the pole. The bottom line: Never go near or touch an electrical wire. Never go near or touch anything or anyone that has come in contact with an electrical wire. • Stay at least 300 feet away from all downed wires--and keep others from going near them as well. Call PSE&G at 1-800-436-7734 or the police or fire department immediately. • Any wire on the ground or hanging from a pole must be considered live. Telephone and cable TV wires may be entangled with electric wires and must also be treated as live. • Be especially careful when driving or parking a vehicle near downed wires. If downed wires are in the street, near the curb, or on the sidewalk, use extreme caution. Never drive over downed power lines. Even if not energized, they can become entangled in your vehicle.Jump as far as possible away from the vehicle with both feet landing on the ground at the same time • Do not attempt to cut or remove a tree that is, or could become, entangled with power lines. Contact PSE&G for assistance and wait for a professional tree removal crew to do the job. • Look up! Always examine your surroundings for power line locations before doing any outside work. 56

What To Do if You Lose Power •

If you lose power, first check your fuse and/or circuit breaker box and main breaker if appropriate. If that is not the problem, and your neighbors also have no power, call PSE&G at 1-800-436 7734. • If your fuse or breakers are in a flooded area, do not go near them until the water recedes or is removed. • Always stay away from fallen power lines, and always assume they are energized. Notify us at 1-800-436-7734 if you notice wires are down in your area. • Know how to open your garage door without the electric opener. • Remember, electric well and sump pumps will not operate. • Unplug all motor-driven appliances like refrigerators and freezers and sensitive electronic equipment (like TVs, microwaves and computers) to prevent a possible electrical overload when power is restored. • Leave one light switch on to indicate when power is restored. • Have a battery-operated radio and flashlight handy. Tips to prevent food spoilage: • Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed. An unopened refrigerator will keep foods cold enough for a few hours. A freezer that is half full will hold food safely for up to 24 hours and a full freezer, between 36 and 48 hours. • Throw a blanket over appliances for added insulation. • You can also extend food storage by packing refrigerated milk, dairy products, meats, fish poultry, eggs, and other foods in a cooler surrounded by ice. • Specific advice on food spoilage is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and from the American Red Cross.

We are to be lead by the Holy Spirit on every manner of conduct that we exhibit to this lost and dying world. We shouldn't sound like the world when we talk. Whining and complaining about the government, or the school system, or the legal system or our place of employment. But we should be thanking God for this country the United States of America. We should be praying for our government leaders, our teachers, our police officers and our employers. We should be thanking God for the fact that His will is being done through all of these individuals. We shouldn't look like the world. We don't have to embrace the same dress code of world. We don't have to walk around with our pants hanging down to our knees and wearing our T-shirts on our head or hanging out of our back pocket showing the world what type of underwear we have on. Oh no he didn't, Yes I did. We don't have to wear fashion that is so revealing that it leaves nothing to the imagination, that it becomes a distraction and gives the wrong impression. We should dress like responsible men and women who have been trained by our parents and guardians. Who are serious about life and have the desire to train up the next generation in the respect and adoration of the Lord. Who are more concerned with displaying inner beauty than outer confusion. Who Love the Lord God Almighty, and want nothing more than to glorify Him. We can't allow the world

to influence our lifestyle to the point that we live a life that is contradictory to the purpose that God created us. In the beginning He created and man and woman. But what we should do is place all of our attention, all of our focus, all of our consideration on the things of God. You see the problem is the love for the things of this world, the desire for attention and the need to be important are the very things that are isolating many people from God the Father. And that's why Paul is inspiring us to look to God and not the things of this world. Jesus said that we should seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things should be added to you. Paul is calling us to take satisfaction in what God has given us. Because God knows what is best for us. And God knows that this city needs to be transformed. But I want you to remember that transformation doesn't start with the President, it d o e s n ' t s t a r t w i t h t h e G o v e r n o r. B u t transformation starts with me. The Nehemiah Model Introduction: The only model in the Bible of urban city transformation occurred about 500 years before Christ, as recorded in the Old Testament Book of Nehemiah. The Pray for Jerusalem initiative, however, which helped position the transformation, is recorded in the Book of Ezra. In following the Nehemiah model, as herein detailed, we are insured success.

PrayForNewark : This prayer saturation initiative which precedes transformation has 900 persons praying daily for each of Newark’s 900 streets. The Bible: Prayer Saturation for the Nehemiah Model was positioned before Nehemiah arrived at Jerusalem. King Darius’ decreed to let the Jews alone to build the House of God and “offer up sacrifices of sweet savors unto the God of heaven” including prayer for the king and his sons. (Ezra 6:10, also, Jesus referred to Temple, his Father’s House, as House of Prayer)

Nehemiah Transformation Model: 7 Steps Mission Visualization: The mission we have for Newarkers is the same as Nehemiah’s. The Bible: Nehemiah’s vision was for his city to become a city where the inhabitants would no longer be in affliction and a reproach. That too is our vision for Newark. (Nehemiah 1:3,10 &17)

Team Mobilization: Identify those who will begin and complete the work in Newark. The Bible: Nehemiah assessed the situation. He then approached the Jews, priests, nobles and rulers and the rest that would do the work and said to them, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem that we be no more a reproach. It will begin with the church, as with Nehemiah it began with the priests. (Nehemiah 2:16-17, see 3:1 & 5)

Enemy Identification: Identify those motivated to obstruct Newark’s transformation. The Bible: Enemies who tried to obstruct Nehemiah’s transformation were primarily outsiders who were grieved exceedingly at the prospect of improvement in the welfare of the city’s inhabitants. They were perpetuating, and probably profiting from, the reproach. In Nehemiah’s case enemy leaders were Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem. (Nehemiah 2:10, 4:1-3 & 7-8, 6:1-2)

Economic Equalization: Newark’s economic opportunities playing field must be level. The Bible: There was a great cry from the people and their wives against Jerusalem brethren because of the economic disparity and bondage that resulted from exacting usury. (Nehemiah 5:1-4, 7) Nehemiah firmly requested the nobles and rulers to restore to those deprived their lands, houses, and part of their money (Nehemiah 5:11). And they made an oath to do so. (Nehemiah 5:12-13)

Word Saturation: The City of Newark must be saturated with the Word of God.

Moses before the congregation of men and women. (Nehemiah 8:1-3,7) When they heard it the people wept. Ezra told them to sorry not “for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:9-10)

Holy Day Observation: With believers support, all must see the Lord’s Day reverenced. The Bible: After hearing the word, the people cleaved to their brethren, their nobles, and made an oath that if the people of the land bring ware, or any victuals on the Sabbath day to sell, they would not buy it of them on the Sabbath day or on a holy day. (Nehemiah 10:31 and 13:15-17)

Righteous Family Unification: Unified righteous families will strengthen our city. The Bible: Nehemiah vehemently opposed the “great evil” of marrying “strange wives” and reminded them how “outlandish women” caused King Solomon to sin. He also expressed concern for the adverse affect on children born of such relationships. (Nehemiah 13:24-27)

How Do I Get Obamacare?

When will the Affordable Care Act allow me to purchase health insurance? "Obamacare" or otherwise known as the The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was enacted into law on March 23, 2010. It puts in place a requirement that all citizens must have a minimum level of health insurance coverage in place by 2014. Starting on January 1, 2014 , all citizens will be able to purchase a qualified health plan through their state's Health Benefit Exchange or through the private market. All states are required to either have an exchange in place by that date or the HHS department will set up one for them. On that date, you will be able to purchase a qualified health insurance plan through your state's exchange that provides the essential health benefits package under Act Sec. 1302(a) of the law. Until that date, the buying process for health insurance will remain essentially the same as it is now. However, many improvements took place immediately such as no lifetime maximum's and allowing children to stay on parent's plans until age 26. Until the exchanges are in place, you can find individual plans from major private health insurers. Online sites such as InsureMe and eHealthInsurance allow you to compare rates from dozens of health insurers such as Aetna, Humana, BCBS, Anthem, United Health and many more. They also include quotes from independent insurance agents.

So what is a 'qualified health plan' and what are the minimum 'essential benefits'? A Qualified Health Plan as required by the law: 1. Is certified and/or approved by the exchange 2. Provides essential benefits required by the law 3. Offered by a health insurance company that is licensed and in good standing that will offer at least one plan at the silver level and one at the gold level. The health insurance company will charge the same premium regardless of whether the plan is bought through an exchange or through an insurance agent. 4. An approved co-op plan or non-profit health insurance are considered qualified health plans. Essential benefits that are required to be offered includes: 70

• Ambulatory patient services • Emergency services • Hospitalization • Maternity and newborn care • Mental health and substance abuse services and treatment • Prescription drugs • Rehabilitative services and devices • Lab services • Preventative wellness • Pediatric services including oral dentist and vision care The levels of coverage offered by exchange plans are expected to vary in cost and coverage from bronze to platinum. The coverage will vary from 60% to 90% of actuarial value depending upon which level of coverage you buy (bronze, silver, gold or platinum). These rules may change so keep yourself updated through healthcare.gov. How can I afford to buy a plan if I have a low income? One great part of the law includes a provision whereby individuals and families can take a new premium tax credit to help them pay for health insurance. This is only for lower income citizens who's adjusted gross incomes are between 100% to 400% of the Federal Poverty Line (FPL). You will be able to take this credit regardless of whether or not you have any tax liability. You can also have the credit paid in advance directly to your insurance company to help pay for your plan's premium and keep your monthly costs low! Who is eligible for the Health Insurance Tax Credit Subsidy? Both the tax credit for low incomes and requirement to have health insurance don't take effect until January 1, 2014. You can't receive the credit until that date. At that time, you can find insurance coverage through one of the exchanges that will be set up in your state. Visit healthcare.gov for more information on the exchanges and any changes to the proposed rules. You can not be turned down for insurance coverage if you have a pre-existing condition and can't be dropped if you get sick when you enroll after January 1, 2014 per the new law. What if I have a pre-existing condition and was denied coverage? Currently, insurance companies can still deny coverage until January 1, 2014 due to pre-existing conditions. If you have been turned down for health insurance in the meantime, then you may be eligible for coverage through a temporary high risk pool (PCIP) that was also a requirement of the law. How do I learn more about whether my state has set up a health care exchange? You can visit the government site that provides more information on Health Benefit Exchanges. 71
