Why We Need Christmas by Curtis D. Mincey

It’s that time of year all over the world. The spirit of giving and receiving is descending across the land. As expectations of expensive or inexpensive gifts increase. Many will awaken to a day filled with fun, food and family. Others because of various circumstances will just open their eyes and give God thanks for being alive. Many people enjoy this holiday season because they believe that they have a lot to look forward to. Vacations, time with family and friends and the so called joy of the season have many individuals trapped within the vortex of holiday lights and cheerful music. But how often have you taken the time to go beyond the decorations, presents, and the myth of a fat man in a red suit. To really consider why we need Christmas anyway. I believe that a lot of us can become so distracted by the the decorated tree and the spiked egg nog that we forget one important fact. We as fallen humanity desperately need Christmas.

We have to remember that Christmas isn’t just a celebration of human beings willingness to give and spread good cheer. Christmas is about God’s love for his creation that he was willing to give mankind the best gift they could ever receive. That gift is his Son, Jesus the Christ, the Savior of mankind. The Holy Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. You see humanity is so depraved that without Christmas there is no hope. Without Christmas there is nothing to celebrate. Without Christmas there is no future. Without Christmas there is no joy. Without the precious gift of God our savior wrapped in flesh who would sacrifice himself on the cross to die on behalf of all who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Christmas would just be another meaningless day of selfish, self-centered greed and depravity. In other words Christmas would just be like any other day. So I don’t know about you, but I truly thank God for Christmas.

GOD ORDAINED! CHRIST CENTERED! BIBLE BASED! MINISTER FOCUSED!

The Supernatural Season of Dedication, Harvest and Light A Messianic Perspective by Min. Lita Theodos, a Jewish believer, Director of Living Waters Ministries

In the midst of the busyness of the holiday season it is easy to lose sight of the biblical truths that it represents. As we get closer to the Lord’s return there are signs that show this is evident and that we are living in the end times. One is the supernatural occurrence of Hanukkah (Nov. 27th to Dec. 5th) and Thanksgiving coming together at the same time this year. While the first night of Hanukkah began the evening of Nov. 27th, the first full day of Hanukkah coincided with the day of Thanksgiving on Nov. 28th. This has not happened since 1888 and will probably not occur again before the Lord’s return. God is telling us to get ready because something great is happening! Hanukkah is known as the Feast of Dedication and the Festival of Lights. As we mentioned in our previous article in November on Hanukkah as stated in John 10:22-23 Jesus went to the Temple for the Feast of Dedication. Since we have lost a lot of connection in Christianity to our Jewish roots we don’t see churches celebrating Hanukkah but since Jesus did shouldn’t we? (Please read the November article for the historical background of Hanukkah). The main theme of Hanukkah is dedication and light. Hanukkah means to dedicate. The Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed in 168 B.C. and was rededicated on Kislev 25 165 B.C. exactly 3 years later. On the Jewish lunar calendar the month of Kislev occurs between the end of November and end of December. This year God is putting emphasis on wanting us to cleanse our temple and rededicate ourselves to serve Him in body, heart, mind and spirit. Since the Feast of Dedication was based on the 8 day biblical pattern of dedication (Ex. 29:37, Ezra 6:16-22, Ezek. 43:26-27), the object to be dedicated was sanctified (set apart) for 7 days and then on the eighth day it was holy to the Lord. God wants us to be set apart from the world and desire to be holy unto Him! Hanukkah was also patterned after the Feast of Tabernacles which is the final major Feast (Lev. 23) lasting 7 days followed by a sabbath day of rest. This Feast was a time to give God thanks for the abundant harvest.

After coming to America, the Pilgrims who had a deep understanding of the Jewish roots of the Christian faith which included the Feasts patterned their celebration which we now call Thanksgiving after the Feast of Tabernacles to give God thanks for their harvest and surviving many trials. Therefore, Hanukkah and Thanksgiving are both based on the Feast of Tabernacles and are a time of dedication, harvest and thanksgiving! This year as they both have come together at the same time God is clearly saying to us this is the season to dedicate ourselves and enter into a harvest of His blessings with thanksgiving! Hanukkah is also known as the Festival of Lights. This is reflected in the lighting of the candles for each night of Hanukkah. The menorah that is used is called a Hanukkiyah and has 8 candle holders with a ninth holder for the Shammash candle. Shammash means servant and is used to light the other candles each night of Hanukkah. Jesus who is God, humbled Himself by coming to earth to become man so that He who was without sin because of love would die a horrible death to make atonement for

the sin of mankind. Ultimately He was resurrected overcoming eternal death and permanent separation from God so that all who would trust in Jesus could live forever in Heaven with Him. The love of Jesus is clearly represented in the lighting of the Hanukkah candles. Since Jesus came to serve, humbling Himself because of His great love for us, when we first light the Shammash candle this reflects Jesus for He came as the Light of the World (John 8:12). When we then pick up the Shammash candle to light the other candles we must lower that candle (a bowing down) to light the others. This reflects that Jesus bowed down to the will of the Father, sacrificing Himself so that we who have entered into that new birth relationship with Him would be saved and have the light of His love in our lives! We are then called to share His love and light with others. During this season of dedication, harvest and light let us spend some time to reflect on the miraculous love that Jesus who is the Light of the World has for us, His bride! Have a wonderfully blessed Hanukkah and Christmas!

Retail vs.The Reason! By Minister Keith Wilks, Metro Christian guest columnist The Christmas holiday season is upon us once again and with it comes societies “encouragement” to spend what we have not yet earned and to buy what we cannot afford. According to the National Retail Federation, the average American will spend nearly $740 on gifts, decorations and greeting cards this holiday season. The day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday (indicating the point at which retailers are profitable or “in the black”), signaled the official start of the holiday shopping season. With more than half of all Americans expected to hit the malls on Black Friday alone, it's clear that commercialization has unfortunately become closely associated with Christmas for most Americans. The basis of the message is that the holiday is best enjoyed through the acquisition of "things." Advertisers bombard us with images of Christmas scenes in which beautiful packages surround the tree, and "happiness" is the result of receiving this or that product. Credit card

companies (those most interested in seeing you spend what you don't have) spend more than $150 million on holiday promotions. Evidence that these messages work is found in the fact that, according to the world renowned Christian financial advisor Dave Ramsey, "over 50 percent of Christmas shoppers will spend well over what they planned to and will go further into debt." As to the severity of this debt, Ramsey points out that "more than $70 billion, over half of what was charged last year, ended up as revolving debt and the interest on last year's gifts are still being paid today." On average, "two-thirds (65 percent) of shoppers overspent their budget by $100–$500 and 75 percent overspent by $50–$100." This philosophy, rooted in the notion that making more money and buying more things, will result in life satisfaction and happiness is a year-round message in America.

However, a joint study recently conducted by the World Health Organization and Harvard Medical School revealed that the US has the highest rate of depression among a survey group of fourteen countries. Conversely the poorest nations reported the lowest levels of depression. Researchers suggest that this may be due to differing expectations. Precisely! Americans (including a large portion of Christian Americans) have been conditioned to expect that happiness and satisfaction naturally flow from economic prosperity and the acquisition of things. Conversely, the whole point of consumer advertising is to make you discontent with what you have by offering an improved life through the purchase of the latest product-an expectation that very quickly evaporates after the purchase of said product . Even though we know this promise is ridiculous; we frequently find ourselves seduced by the lords of consumerism into believing this silly proposition. We acquire more “stuff”, we then want more because we have more, leaving us no happier than before. Indeed, the more we earn the more we want! This misguided (and idolatrous) expectation sets us up for perpetual disappointment because as the evidence demonstrates, prosperity always fails as a source of lasting contentment and life satisfaction. The first remedy is to simply recognize the false "gospel" of consumerism. Secondly, from a financial perspective, Dave Ramsey offers some practical advice relative to Christmas: • Make a list of everyone you are buying a gift for and put a dollar amount by every name. Total it at the bottom. This is your Christmas budget. The people in the mall have a plan to get your money-get a game plan for your shopping so you can keep some money. There is no excuse for financing Christmas. • Pay cash. Put the total from your budget in an envelope and when the cash is gone, stop spending. This will help keep you on budget because if you overspend on Aunt Sue, Uncle Harry won't get a gift. • 69 percent of Americans bought a gift for themselves last year. Don't buy yourself a gift! This is the season to give not to receive … from yourself. If we find ourselves swept up in the rush of consumerism, we must stop! Remember that Christmas is about God's gracious and abundant gifts to us-the gifts of life, family and friends, good food, music, worship; the virtues of peace, charity and mercy; and the greatest of all: His Son, Jesus. Savor these things and ponder the truth of God’s word which states, the blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it. KJV Christmas reminds us that we who were without hope, slaves to sin and sorrow, now have a real and present hope. We can be saved from this dreadful condition and finally discover true satisfaction and contentment not because we received the latest gadget but because "God so loved the word that He gave (us) His only begotten Son"! We can be reconciled with God, ourselves, and others! So this Christmas let’s revel in God's gracious gifts, to drink deeply the wonder of relationships and life and every moment of this season. These will leave you truly satisfied as well as debt free! Have a Blessed Holiday Season and a very Merry Christmas! Keith Wilks is a licensed agent with Primerica

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." Romans 1:16

I find myself being ashamed. Not of the gospel, not of the body of Christ. I find myself being ashamed of the false teachers and their strange doctrine. I find myself being confused by their strange teachings. I find myself being insulted by their scriptural manipulation. I find myself being embarrassed by their fake healings and angered by their false prophecies. I find myself praying that God would forgive them of their heresies and allow them to preach the truth and nothing but the truth. We should not be ashamed of the gospel because it is the gospel that gives us hope. We should be thankful for a God that loves us so much that he would give us another chance. We should be grateful for a Savior that died on the cross of crucifixion on our behalf. We should be humbled by the Holy Spirit that has taken up residence inside us. If I should be ashamed of anything it should be my lazy attitude toward evangelism. Or my lack of really studying God's word. Or maybe I should be ashamed of my lack of faith or lack of giving. Or maybe I should be ashamed of my lack of love and compassion for my brothers and sisters in Christ. But ashamed of the gospel that has set me free. Ashamed of the word of God that has transformed my life. No never ever will I be ashamed.

Business Transformation

You Are Transmitting . . . But Are You Being Received? Studies show that people retain more information from sights and sounds than from words. This is known as The 55/38/7 Rule, and it means that the more we say. the less people will remember. Therefore, the less you say, the greater percentage of your message is being retained. It's best to speak slowly: the faster words come. the less we remember. Work hard to pronounce words clearly and avoid jargon, slang and non-words. You should also pause frequently to give your words time to sink in. "Body Talk is the unspoken message we send to our listeners. Your eyes are the first thing your listeners will notice about you. Smile before speaking, it’s a proven fact that when you smile while speaking it changes the whole context of your message. You should have good posture and respect personal space when speaking with people face to face. What does the 55/38/7 Rule mean to us as communicators? It means that the more we say, the less people will remember. It means that sights and sounds "speak louder'' than our words. Because people don't remember much of what we say, it's important for us to maximize the value of what we DO say. Remember 1) Less is more. 2) Speak slowly. 3) Speak clearly. 4) Avoid Jargon and Slang. And to... 5) Pause Frequently. This will help you improve your verbal communication skills, to get the most out of the 7% that people DO retain!

Do You Know What Your Gold Is Worth?

Many people buy and sell gold everyday but very few actually know if they are getting a good deal or, if they are getting ripped off. If you are one of those people who are at the mercy of the jeweler and has to trust the price that jeweler gives then you need to know how to calculate gold prices by karat & weight... Its actually pretty simple. We know that 24k or 24 Karat gold is pure (its actually .999% pure) gold. But no one has pure gold jewelry because gold in itself is actually somewhat soft... In fact really too soft for jewelry, so it is mixed with other alloys for strength and durability. First, divide the karat (24; 18; 14; 10) by 24. This will let you know the percentage of gold you have in your piece of jewelry. (SEE Table #1) Now multiply that number by today's gold price per gram. The current price of gold is $1,600.00 per troy ounce - or $51.45 per gram. ( There are 31.1 grams in a troy ounce), then your 10K gold ring is worth $21.44 per gram ($51.45 x .4167), or $107.20. 10k 14k 18k 22k 24k

= = = = =

10/24 14/24 18/24 22/24 24/24

= = = = =

.4167 .5833 .750 .9167 1.000

1oz 1oz 1oz 1oz 1oz

10k 14k 18k 22k 24k

$ 666.72 $ 933.38 $1200.00 $1466.72 $1600.00

1gm 1gm 1gm 1gm 1gm

10k 14k 18k 22k 24k

= = = = =

$21.50 $30.01 $38.59 $47.16 $51.45

If you have five- grams of 14K, and gold is $1,600.00 today, then $1,600 divided by 31.1 would equal $51.45. That figure, multiplied by .5833 (14K) comes out to $30.01 per gram. $30.01 x five- grams equals $150.05. Some gold buyers use pennyweight (DWT) instead of grams. There are 20- pennyweights per troy ounce. Let’s say you want to sell your gold. You know it weighs 25 grams. You go to a pawn shop to see what they will pay, but they use pennyweights, not grams. Here's how to calculate the conversion: 25 grams of gold x 0.643 = 16.1 pennyweights. Pennyweights to Grams............divide by 1.55517 Grams to Pennyweights............Multiply by 0.643 Know what you have BEFORE you go to sell it. You probably work hard for your gold, so don't give it away!

COMMENTARY

From the Pastor’s Notebook

Jude Condemnation of the False Teachers Dear friends, although I have been eager to write to you about our common salvation, I now feel compelled instead to write to encourage you to contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. 4For certain men have secretly slipped in among you men who long ago were marked out for the condemnation I am about to describe - ungodly men who have turned the grace of our God into a license for evil and who deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. 3

The book of Jude is such a small book that it is often over looked between the Johannian epistles and the Revelation of Jesus Christ. However this is an important book in that Peter warns that the false teachers are coming, John, Paul, and Enoch also speak to the coming o f Apostates. Jude Announces... Their Here!

While we know that the church is not only the body of Christ but also the Army of God. Armies fight, go to war, conquer territory, and rescue those who would be obliterated. But God’s army is always fighting on two fronts. Because the enemy has “slipped in”; and they are sabotaging the body from within.

We must “contend” for the faith... Fight for it... Even when the fight is within our own walls. It time to stop letting false teachings be spoken in the church. Stand up for the truth, even when its unpopular, otherwise it will destroy us. Don’t be so permissive of false teachings... Espouse it for what it is... Lies!

Great Leadership Lessons PT i

by Colin Powell

The following are Colin Powell’s lessons on leadership... along with my commentary: 1

2

3

4

5

6

Lesson 1. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off." The right thing to do isn’t always the popular thing to do. Making the tough calls means taking a stance. When you take a stance, not everybody will agree. The worst scenario is a conflict of values. This means that people will be divided, and if you try to make everybody happy, you’ll make nobody happy. Lesson 2. "The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have lost their confident that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership." If people bring you their problems, it’s a good thing. At a minimum, it means they think you’re listening. When people stop bringing you their problems, it’s a sign you’ve failed them as a leader. When people no longer share their problems, you lose touch with what’s going on. Lesson 3. "Don’t be buffaloed by experts and elites. Experts often possess more data than judgment. Elites can become so inbred that they produce hemophiliacs who bleed to death as soon as they are nicked by the real world." Don’t undermine your own instincts, insight and perspective. Respect opinions, but don’t blindly adopt them. It’s one thing to be right in theory, it’s another to be right in practice. There is a lot of space between theory and practice where your perspective can help shape a better result. Lesson 4. "Don’t be afraid to challenge the pros, even in their own backyard." If something doesn’t add up, challenge it. Challenge the people around you to grow. It’s easy for people to stagnate. Push people to continuously raise their bar and achieve new levels of performance. One of the best ways is by asking the tough questions. Lesson 5. "Never neglect details. When everyone’s mind is dulled or distracted the leader must be doubly vigilant." Stay on your toes and be careful of what can slip through the cracks. The details are where the rubber meets the road. Some of the best leaders I know always walk the processes to get first-hand experience. This helps them understand and rationalize how things fit together in the bigger picture. Some people mistake this for micro-managing, but it’s preparation for more effective delegation or for direction and coaching. Lesson 6. "You don’t know what you can get away with until you try." This is about asking for forgiveness over asking for permission.
