The Force Ready To Serve Mayor Ras J. Baraka, members of the Newark Municipal Council, Police Director Eugene Venable, and Police Chief Anthony Campos swore in 35 new Newark police officers into their duties today, in a City Hall Municipal Council Chamber ceremony. City Hall is located at 920 Broad Street. Of the 35 recruits in the class, 30 are male and five female. The class is the first hired since March 2010. This previous class of Newark Police recruits to be sworn in was a 54-member class of 45 males and nine females. It will enhance Mayor Baraka’s initiative to increase the number of police officers in the Department, with 70 percent of them serving in the neighborhoods and streets of Newark. “This is a very exciting day for the City of Newark. You new police officers are a godsend. We have called upon our dedicated Police team to protect us without the resources we need, and now we are gaining additional resources in you. You are now part of the Newark Police Department, ready to blaze a new trail to protect our residents. Be the best officers you can be, for the best and brightest City in the state of New Jersey,” said Mayor Baraka.

The class underwent a 24-week training course at the Essex County College Police Academy in Cedar Grove, which included classes on Physical Training, New Jersey Law, and Firearms Qualifications. They graduated from the academy at an Essex County College ceremony on Thursday, September 4.

FALL INTO A HEALTHY SEASON

Page 2 Inter-Faith Alliance Prayer Breakfast

by Rev. Jerri Mitchell-Lee

Summer may be the season of fresh fruits, but Fall is the season for wonderful healthy vegetables. The kind of vegetable that can keep you in wonderful winter shape and health. Each time the seasons change, we get a refresher course on how our bodies and spirit change with the movement of the earth: and how connected we are to it. As Fall approaches our skin, hair, muscles and organs will need a little extra moisture to keep everything working smoothly. Cold weather causes loss of moisture just as hot weather does. For those who are not avid water drinkers, Fall and Winter are even more of a challenge . We drink more in Summer because we are hot. Cool weather does not encourage most people to continue to drink the same amount of water. But there is hope for those who need a variety of ways to maintain fluid in the body, but are not avid water drinkers. The following foods are rich in vitamins as well as being a natural source of fluid. Cabbage, spinach, squash, turnips, strawberries, cantaloupe, cranberries, watermelon, oranges, pears, apples. MONTHLY HEALTH CHALLENGE “ If you miss the cause, you can not fix the problem.” If you don’t find out what causing your blood pressure to rise or your blood sugar levels to be unstable, then you can not progress towards a healthier you. Enjoy the season. Find an area where the trees are showing their fall beauty and walk your way through it. A show only Mother Nature could produce. Work on eating healthier, not losing weight. Once your body starts to feel the boost from healthy eating it will want to move. Human Beings do not have to store fat to make it through the Fall and Winter. Plan now… to have a brand new you by the time Spring comes and you take off the coats again. As we approach Thanksgiving let us remember the Native Americans did not eat junk food. What topic of Health would you like to know more about. Please let me know. gjerrilee@yahoo.com

The breakfast held at the Robert Treat Hotel, in downtown Newark was hosted the by the Mayor and Clergy Affairs Mayoral Aide Rev. Louise ScottRoundtree on October 2nd.

“I am proud to host my first Inter-Faith Alliance Prayer Breakfast as Newark’s Chief Executive today,” Mayor Baraka said. “One of Newark’s greatest strengths is the power of faith, which has given us the wisdom, resilience, and unity that has enabled us to come together as a community. Today we brought together representatives of Newark’s many faiths to achieve a common goal: to transform Newark into a city that we can all believe in. I was energized and empowered by the strong words and commitment we saw today.”

Representatives of a wide array of Newark’s houses of worship spoke at the breakfast.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH IN NEWARK Several Hispanic journalists and Latino Community leaders were honored for their extraordinary work and contributions to the City of Newark, at the Hispanic Heritage Breakfast, today, at the Newark Museum. “I am extremely proud of the vast contributions that the Hispanic residents of Newark have made towards the growth, prosperity, and transformation of our city. In the arts, education, and business, our Hispanic community greatly contributed to the partnerships and unity we need to build the Newark we can all believe in. said Mayor Baraka. Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) is celebrated nationally and recognizes the great contributions of Hispanic-Americans to American society and culture.

COMMON SENSE by Darrin Sharif dSharif.blogspot.com

There Is Life After Politics ...As I have been adjusting to life outside the spotlight and getting some much-needed rest and relaxation, I have been able to think more clearly, deeply, and critically about our city’s future and what will be required from all of us to move it forward. Newark is a city of enormous potential. It has more resources per square mile than any other city in the State. But like many mid-sized and big cities in the country, Newark’s growth and development has been stunted by at-risk and underserved neighborhoods, high levels of unemployment and crime, and failing schools. These problems have been festering for generations and have not gotten significantly better over the years. They have been studied and researched extensively; and have been the subject of more forums and panel discussions than I care to count. But with the passage of time, and the expenditure of untold resources, things have gotten worse, not better. How do we chart a course from where we are to where we want to be? How and where do we engage to make transformational change?

What each of us does or doesn’t do each day contributes to the ongoing shaping of our city. If more of us volunteered just a small amount of our time we would change Newark – “in real time.” This blog is dedicated to creating a quiet movement of change through small and consistent acts. While in office I avoided political posturing and grand standing because I knew it did little to improve the lives of residents that faced serious challenges. Instead, I focused on creating programs and services that invested in people and the neighborhoods where they lived. Our record of accomplishment was real and felt by many.

Today we delivered on that promise, bringing together mayor and law enforcement leadership from across New Jersey, as well as our state and federal partners, to create solutions to both the causes and results of crime. We cannot arrest our way out of crime, and we cannot address crime if we do not work together as caring, concerned, and compassionate communities. This is more than a Newark issue. All of our state’s municipalities must work together to create a New Jersey we can all believe in, and I am proud to see so many municipalities here to work toward that goal,” Mayor Baraka said Among the subjects that were discussed at the press conference and the Round Table were shared services such as the ability to track criminals that may travel from city to city, gang intelligence, police manpower, expansion of employment, prisoner re-entry programs, and bank foreclosures.

MINISTRY TRANSFORMATION You Need ReMA! Everyone's talking about transformation and unity. Unity brings gifts to your ministry, to you, that you might not currently have. Ministry organizations are a great source to colaboration and learning.

Newark Coucilman (shown here with wife former Deputy Mayor Margarita Muniz) at large turns down off from the Baraka administration to be municipal city court judge; relacing Honorable Bahir Kamil. Sources say that Carlos Gonzalez met late October with the Baraka administration and later accepted the judgeship offer. However after reconsidering the wishes of his community he made this statement in an interview. "It would have been morally wrong for me to surrender a position that we have fought so hard to obtain," Gonzalez's departure to the bench would have cleared the way for an at-large council member appointment by the mayor and would solidify his (the mayor's) already 5 of 9 "team members" on the city council. Gonzalez won on the ticket of Shavar Jefferies who was earlier defeated by Baraka this year.

The Mayor, New Jersey Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman, Newark Police Director Eugene Venable, Police Chief Anthony Campos, and other dignitaries will attend the Newark Police Department’s Neighborhood Community Foot Patrol walk in Newark’s West Ward. The State Attorney General joined city officials, clergy members, and other dignitaries on the neighborhood walk, to address crime and quality-of-life issues. The Neighborhood Walk was a part of an initiative begun by Mayor Baraka after his inauguration on July 1, and are held every Tuesday and Friday, in a different ward. In the walks, police officers are joined by other agencies, clergy members, and community residents to walk around neighborhoods to combine patrol with community outreach. They are followed by public evening roll calls on the streets. A primary focus of these walks is to provide solutions to issues that affect the community, including curfew enforcement, boarding-up of abandoned buildings, assistance to the homeless population, and alcohol beverage control enforcement.

One such group ie ReMA... The Resident Ministers' Alliance. These are ministers who primarily live and some just minister in the city of Newark focused on transforming the city as a whole.

LIFE TRANSFORMATION

ReMA has various committees which seek to cover the broad spectrum of life in Newark and to address the social-economic needs of Newarkers as well as seeking to minister to them spiritually.

Mark Zuckerburg I think said it best, “Done is better than perfect.” Many of us struggle with the thought of that project not being its best and ready to be finalized. Whether its a writing a book, preparing for a test, inventing a new product, or making a new purchase; often times we don’t move because we feel as though we are not ready, its not good enough, there are still flaws to work out... its just not perfect.

To find out more about ReMA visit their website at RemaNewark.org

Hockey great Wayne Gretzky put it this way, “You miss a 100% of the shots you don’t take!” The truth is that many of us never take the “shot” because we always feel as though the conditions could be better… and we’re right… but take the shot anyway! Seize the opportunity when it knocks… it might not be available if you don’t.

CITY TRANSFORMATION Encourage A Young Person's Dreams!

"Take Your Shot... Anyway"

Here are 3 ways to avoid missed opportunities in life because you feel as though conditions could be better. What do you think would happen if every time you encountered a young person you gave them a positive word of 1 Have a different viewpoint. Look at things differently, very few things in life don’t change over time… no encouragement? It would impact their lives for positive change. matter what you do in life, you will have to adjust it eventually. By finalizing what you’re doing now means So many people live with such negativity and hopelessness that you can start doing something new thats also important that much sooner. they don’t even try to reach out for their dreams. Sadly many of our youth in Newark fall into this category and each of us can make a difference. Don't give up and write off our young men and woman. Catch a young person “doing good” and make a big deal about it. Congratulate them, Praise them, Encourage them; Remind them, that if they focus, work diligently and don’t quit, they will position themselves to achieve their dreams. And This will transform our city!

2 Stay focused… or keep your focus small. Contrary to popular belief multi-tasking is not a great ability... it often leads to error or mediocrity at best. Give allyour attention to whats in front of you, finish it, and then start a new task… you will immediately see a much greater result. 3 Know that Perfection is not necessarily Excellence. Perfection does not allow for time constraints and all of the other tasks in life that must be done. And know that you will always have to go back and tweak whatever it is that you’re doing anyway. Remember life is much like software in that software gets released with its bugs in it and over time updates get released with fixes, it becomes better, but people benefit from it the minute it is released. So go to work, pull the trigger and release that thing you've been holding onto until its perfect. Make adjustments as needed, and stop delaying taking your shot until things are perfect, because it will never be. Remember you will never make the shot until you take the shot... go ahead, take your shot!

No Garden Behind The Facade! By: L. Craig Schoonmaker, writer and fotografer

Don't Cause Her To Feel Single! A woman is fully capable of being faithful. It is not so much in their nature, although it is of course possible, to be drawn to someone else when they are already in a relationship. Temptation is not her weakness. That's one of the key issues with men... wondering eyes will often lead to a compromise of values and succumbing to physical lusts.

IThe peculiarly-named "Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District" — which is nowhere near the ocean (even tho Newark is indeed a seaport) — has, for many years now, wanted to do wonderful things with the ruin of an old church on the steps of which Abraham Lincoln spoke briefly. Its webpage about those plans — nay, mere musings, it seems to me — speaks to "an urban farm with a greenhouse, hydroponics and aquaponics to source the concession-stand during performances and provide vegetables for locals." Dictionary.com does not recognize any such word as "aquaponics", and wouldn't that be the same as hydroponics, in any case? So why two terms? That website describes the structure that remains as "a striking eight-story high blue sandstone Greek Revival façade on a half-acre site". Blue? I don't think so. See the foto above. The website also includes this idiotic sentence: Built in 1855, Abraham Lincoln spoke on the steps of [the church] in 1861 on his way to his first inauguration. As written, that sentence says that Abraham Lincoln was built in 1855. I am very tired of careless writing and the refusal of websites and even major media to employ proofreaders who actually KNOW English, and who work to prevent illiterate locutions like that from embarrassing publishers. + In at least one prior year, and probably two or more, the field in back of The Façade! was filled with gardening beds and even a small tent-greenhouse for a community vegetable garden. Not this year, as the foto above, taken August 21st, shows plainly.

That foto also shows what are probably Queen Anne's Lace wildflowers, with their distinctive white, flattened flowerheads. When I visited the Louisbourg (lúe.wee.bùerg) area of Nova Scotia (Canada — which should long ago have been made part of the United States) — I saw plants of that type taller than the roof of my car, with stems thick enuf to support such a structure easily. I only now wonder if those big plants produce carrot-like roots, in that another name for Queen Anne's Lace is "wild carrot". + We have various wild plants with edible parts in this area, such as dandelions and onion grass, but few of us are adventurous enuf to harvest such things for salads, or even for cooked contributions to soups. I eat a lot of soup (due to bad teeth), but have not, to date, ventured to pluck dandelion leaves (you're supposed to harvest relatively new growth of dandelions, as I recall from something I read years ago, when I was thinking of doing this; and lemon juice was, I think, suggested to neutralize any bitterness) or the grass-like leaves of wild onions. Onion grass produces a globular seed pod with little sprouts shooting out in all directions from it. I've been tempted to try eating the leaves, if not in salads — tho why not in salads? — then at least in soups or diced and mixed into hamburgers, but have not yet done that. Perhaps I should challenge myself to do it, finally, before cold weather kills the dandelions and onion grass in my yards. + By the way, did you know that the word "dandelion" comes from the French phrase "dent de lion", [Dictionary.com:] "literally, tooth of (a) lion, translation of Medieval Latin dēns leōnis, in allusion to the toothed leaves")? How utterly faskinatin'. Or perhaps I should say "dandy".

If you want to really learn more about the day to day happenings in the city be sure to visit the blog "Newark USA" by L. Craig Schoonmaker at NewarkUSA.Blogspot.com it is by far the best blog about Newark NJ

What most women want is Love, Attention, Honesty, and Loyalty. These things, admittedly by most men, are emotional needs that men either struggle with expressing, do not care to express, or, are simply "clueless" to the fact that they exist and are essential to the fulfillment, joy and happiness of most women. Love her! Love is best expressed through giving and sacrifice. Give to her, your time, your things, but most importantly your heart. Share yourself with her. Sacrifice yourself, put her desires above yours, sacrifices your wants fans desires to see that hers are fulfilled Pay attention to her. This shows her that you value her and that her opinions and ideas are respected and that they are important to you. She needs this. Be honest with her. Even when the truth may be unpleasant, tell her the truth. Her intuition will alert her if you are not, and she will sense that something is not right. If you are no longer wanting to be with her then tell her. Be honest. Don't cheat Be loyal to her. Be faithful. Be monogamous! Trust her and put her first. Remember that before she "cheats" she will wine. cry, and complain about all the things that make her unhappy. Listen to her, open up your heart to what she's saying. If you don't understand, ask her to explain it so that you are clear as to what she's feeling. You must know her on this level. This IS intimacy! and sadly many couples lose their intimacy as their relationships move through time. These are all warnings before the destruction of the relationship comes. So pay attention to your woman, and never cause her to feel like she's alone and single or that's how she will act. Like a single woman, and you will lose her forever.
