Fireflies in the Sky
It was a Summer evening about 6 years ago. I was rocking my baby boy in my arms and when he fell asleep I put him gently down into his crib for the night. My wife worn out from a long day of work was half napping and half watching TV in the living room. Not caring for the show I poured myself a glass of iced tea in the kitchen, took a lawn chair off our porch, and walked into the front yard to gaze at the stars. As soon as I stepped onto the yard I heard the sweet sound of laughter drifting through the air. In the lot next to our house the neighbor’s children were chasing fireflies, hoping to catch one in a mason jar. I sat down in my chair and watched them for awhile. As fast as they ran, though, they couldn’t seem to catch the slow moving lightning bugs. Finally, exhausted they both sat down in the grass and just watched the little guys flying through the air, blinking their lights on and off. I sipped my tea and joined them in their awe and appreciation. It felt so good getting to see one of God’s many miracles lighting up my front yard on a warm, Summer night. It made me feel a bit closer to the Divine and a part of something far greater than myself. Since then, I have appreciated and enjoyed all of the glorious light in this world. I have taken it into my heart and welcomed it into my soul. I
have found it in nature, books, music, animals, prayer, and most of all in the lives of those around me. I have never tried to catch this light, however. I have learned that true light and true love must come from within. It must flow freely between us and can’t be captured in a jar. The next time you see some fireflies then, take a seat and enjoy their light. Let them remind you to shine your own light as well. Let them remind you to fill your life with the brightness of your love. Let them remind you that you too are one of God’s miracles in this world.

Vitamin-B, Please
Ever feel like you won’t be able to make it through the afternoon, let alone your evening workout? Millions of Americans feel the same way so we put together a list of 5 foods that improve energy throughout the day. Morning, mid-day, noon or night these foods filled with energy giving vitamins help turn food into fuel within every cell, for natural and long-lasting energy. The human body needs 13 vitamins to survive and thrive, and the B-group vitamins account for eight of those 13 vitamins. B vitamins are essential to wellness, especially for nervous, , and cardiovascular system function. They are vital for energy production and healthy red blood cell formation and function. B vitamins don’t directly give you energy, but instead, they help your body use protein, fats, and carbohydrates efficiently as fuel, through digestion and absorption. Though they’re naturally found in food, because they’re water-soluble, most B vitamins are excreted more quickly from the body than vitamins that are fat-soluble (Vitamins A, D, E, and K) are. The only exceptions to this rule are Vitamin B-12 and folate, stored in the liver.
Need
an energy boost? WHOLE GRAINS:
NUTS AND SEEDS:
B vitamins are also easily destroyed during the cooking process, or when combined with alcohol, which denatures their structure. Highly-processed foods are also lower in natural B vitamins because of the intense production methods, which deplete the natural stores found in the foods directly. This is one reason B vitamins are often added back into foods (such as in fortified cereals) to make products more nutritious for consumers, or to market them as healthy choices. A poor diet will quickly lead to a B vitamin deficiency unless a supplement is taken, therefore eating a nutritious, well-balanced diet is the easiest and most healthy way to obtain enough of this critical group of nutrients. only exception is Vitamin B-12, in which supplement is recommended to everyone. Since it is obtained from a bacteria in the soil, Vitamin B12 is often depleted due to the conditions of our soil today which is the result of our intense agricultural system. B vitamin deficiency can include many serious health issues such as anemia, fatigue, depression, constipation, poor digestion, heart problems, poor memory and concentration, poor skin, hair and nails, irregular heartbeat, moodiness, lack of appetite, and anxiety. Though many vegan foods provide the body with B vitamins, some sources are better than others. Here are the top five group of foods that are bursting with the B’s to keep you healthy!
FISH: Well known for omega 3s, this high protein food is also rich in vitamin B12. Try Mackerel, Herring, Salmon, Tuna, Cod, Trout and Sardines for a dose of B vitamins including vitamin B6. Great for brunch, or an early day-time snack due to the rich omega fat content which has been shown to help improve mental functions and cognitive ability.
BANANAS: A

It may also be important to take a supplement. Consult your doctor and have him suggest a vitamin that is best for you.
Will I Have to Pay Taxes on My Inheritance?
O
ne of the most common questions we get is whether you will have to pay taxes on your inheritance. Before you can answer this question, you need to understand that the term "taxes" actually encompasses four (or more) different types of taxes: inheritance taxes, estate taxes, income taxes and capital gains taxes. Whether or not your inheritance will be subject to one or more of these taxes will depend on many factors, so let's address these one at a time:
and it will not be subject to Federal or State income tax. There are, however, some exceptions: The two most common exceptions are retirement plans and annuities. These tax-favored investments come to the beneficiary with built-in tax consequences. For example, if you inherit a traditional IRA or 401(k) that was funded with pre-tax dollars, you will have to include all distributions as ordinary income during the year in which you take the distributions, and those distributions will be taxed as such. For annuities, you will pay tax only on distributions above the cost that the original annuity owner paid.

FEDERAL ESTATE TAXES Federal Estate Tax is a tax on your right to transfer property at your death. Unlike Inheritance tax which is paid by the recipient of assets, Federal Estate Tax is paid by your estate. Fortunately, the Federal Government grants an exemption to estates valued below a certain level (i.e., the Exemption Equivalent Amount). Notes from Nigel
I cannot believe I am one years old now. My mom says I am growing up way to fast. I am now eating on my own and do not require any hand feedings. I still love lots of cuddles and I have discovered that I can fly very well. I am not allowed to go outside without my harness. I am very curious and like to explore so the harness is used for my safety. My weight is holding steady at about 1300grams. Macadamia and Cashew nuts are my favorite food right now. My mom must buy them 10 pounds at a time. She said I am a blue feathered pig. I am looking forward to the next expo the magazine will be having the Lifestyles 55+ expo at the Northshore Harbor Center September 30th. I know it will be lots of fun, I hope to see you there.

Finding Purpose
Have you ever heard the old saying, “Even the best laid schemes of mice and men, sometimes go awry”? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with making plans. In fact it is just good wisdom to make plans before you do something. However, just because we make plans does not mean they will always work out just the way we planned. Here’s something I’ve discovered down through the years: God has a plan and it seems to work out better

Live Longer... with a
PET?
According to sceince, a furry friend can be good for your health
Do you exercise, watch your diet or take medication to lower your blood pressure, blood fats and cholesterol levels? If you do, maybe you should consider having a pet! According to the American Heart Association, numerous studies have shown the positive relationship between pet ownership (primarily dogs and cats) and a lower risk for developing cardiovascular disease. These health benefits include increased physical activities, favorable lipid profiles, lower systemic blood pressure, improved autonomic tone, diminished sympathetic responses to stress and an improved survival rate after an acute coronary syndrome. Similar studies by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) confirmed
Pg. 10

that people who have pets exhibit decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels – all of which can ultimately minimize their risk for having a heart attack. Some, but not all, studies have also linked pet ownership to lower blood pressure. Researchers in Australia screened 5,741 people to reveal that the 784 individuals who owned pets had lower blood pressure and triglyceride and cholesterol levels than did the non-pet owners. Even more re interesting is that the researchers could not attribute the difference to lifestyle factors such as cigarette smoking, diet, weight or socio-economic profiles. In fact, although the healthier individuals had pet ownership in common and tended to be slightly more active than the others,
they also drank more alcohol and ate take-out food more often. Did you know that the most serious disease for older people is not cancer or heart disease - it is loneliness? In over 25 studies on the effects of pets on elderly people in nursing homes found that residents exposed to pets consistently smiled more and became measurably more alert than those who did not encounter animals. Having a pet offered the elderly affection and unconditional love, helped them feel less lonely, helped to ease the loss of a loved one and normalized their environment. Not only do pets offer unconditional love, they may also give their owners a sense of purpose, which can be crucial for fighting off negative feelings. Researchers at the University of Missou-
ri-Columbia found that interacting and petting animals creates a hormonal response, that raises our level of serotonin, and helps to ward off depression. Interacting with animals also increases our levels of prolactin and oxytocin, both of which help to regulate our moods. Oxytocin has a powerful effect on our ability to remain in a state of readiness in order to heal and to grow new cells. And while it is no secret that owning a dog often lends itself to more physical activity (such as walking your dog or playing throw and catch), a recent study by the Nation-
al Institutes of Health confirmed that dog owners are less likely to be obese than non-dog owners. Pets are an important part of our lives and now we have even more reasons to have them around. So next time you are taking your dog for a walk or watching television with your cat, make sure you tell them thanks for keeping you healthy.

Bora Bora Island From its name alone, Bora Bora Island enchants. Once described as “a tiny emerald in a setting of turquoise, encircled by a sheltering necklace of sparkling pearls,” this almost mythical, mystical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is without a doubt one of the beautiful islands of the world. For over 40 years, Bora Bora has been frequented by tourists from all over the world. Hailed to be the most beautiful island in the world, the living in Bora Bora is so relaxing, as there is always something for everyone in Bora Bora. According to the history of Bora Bora, the United States Military officially closed their base that was on the island on June 2, 1946, after the war. However, many Americans refused to leave the isPg. 12

land because it became close to their hearts. Some Americans were even forcibly asked to leave due to complaints of their families from the mainland. This previously used base became French Polynesia’s only international airport. But later on, Faa’a International Airport was opened in the year 1962 in Papeete, Tahiti. Today the Island of Bora Bora relies largely on tourism and because of this seven luxurious resorts were built over the past few years. Hotel Bora Bora was the first to build bungalows that stand over the water using stilts. And today, over-the-water bungalows are a given of every resort on the island because these bungalows provide spectacular sites of lagoons and mountains.
Bora Bora is popular for snorkeling and for scuba diving. Tourists can explore the lagoons and can find different species of sharks and manta rays. The island’s foremost attraction is its tranquil lagoon of dazzling clear water that offers different activities like shark and stingray feeding excursion. Also, a very interesting activity is the land excursion. Tourists can take a ride on 4x4 trucks that climb up the hills to view old World War II cannons and learn more about the history of Bora Bora. Although French and Tahitian are the main languages of Bora Bora, most inhabitants that interact with visitors have a good comprehension of the English language. Most tourists that visit the island are American, Japanese or European.
The history of Bora Bora is very interesting and what better way to discover and relive it than to visit the villages and explore the island.

“I don’t want to be 75, saying ‘I wish I had tried that’. I did hear from those who thought that I was just a dreamer and none of those dreams would work out. What I say now is “find a way to work your dreams”. Many people were well meaning and didn’t want me to be hurt, but others didn’t want to be left behind. I had to move on from those people. These words, spoken with a passionate heart teeming with intensity, did not come from a life coach, a counselor, or a philosopher. They came from Debra Rogers Welborn, now on the other side of a life full of great highs and deep lows—what we all experience to some extent. But the difference between Debra and most of us is that she didn’t let the naysayers drive the direction of her life. Debra remembers the white cotton curtains that would blow from the air of the attic fan—no air conditioning then—and with mom in the middle of the big bed and all the kids around her, reading those Little Golden Books. Cinderella, Snow White, and the fairy tales--these captured Debra. Sometimes when Mom would get tired and maybe skim over some of the story, Debra would always catch her: “oh no-no-you skipped a page!” At the age of 3 she could recite the books from memory and would do so, word for word, for company. She loved to sing and act, and as a “little skinny thing” she loved to dress up each year when it was time to watch the Miss America Pageant. Mom would stuff the station wagon on her parents. Her mom wanted to be a with the neighborhood kids and make mom, and her dad treasured having a fam- popcorn and a big jug of lemonade and ily. This impressed Debra and she delight- take them to the drive-in. In those days

you always got 2 movies when you went, and the kids usually fell asleep after the first one. Not Debra. She and mom would watch the second and then sometimes the first again, even making up happy endings when the movie had a sad one. Once mom started taking her to musicals, there was no turning back and the star that had been born now headed high to the sky that could make her shine. Some of her musical interest likely came from Dad early on as well, who played the piano. Debra recounts her first big break— which came at the age of 6. Singing and acting in a one-act play competition titled Fudge and a Burglar, she remembers singing two songs, one of which was “Puff the Magic Dragon” sung to two scared younger siblings. From there, thanks to Mr. Crook (“the choir director for her high school and the Methodist church down the street) Debra landed lead parts in his mu-
sicals and his special singing group. Everyone loved Mr. Crook, so much so that on Senior Skip Day students gladly skipped all their classes except his. A loving family, wonderful parents, opportunity, and endless encouragement, it seemed to reflect the Wally and June Cleaver life that represented the perfect American family in that era. And then darkness fell. Not understanding why her throat seemed to be constantly bothering her to the point where she couldn’t sing at her brother’s wedding, she went to see an ENT. At the age of 24 she heard the last words she ever expected to hear: vocal-chord cancer. “Looking back, it was one of the biggest blessings God ever gave me. But at the time, I thought, What do you mean? I feel fine and I’m young! This can’t be! Once the initial shock passed, two things kept Debra going. One was her love for her parents. “I knew they felt horrible, and I
wanted to make them feel better.” Six weeks of deeply painful daily radiation made her aware of how short life can be. “You know, you learn more in a valley than on a mountain.” In that valley with the cancer also rested the recent death of her best friend from birth. In the ICU for a week following a car accident, Debra was sure her friend would recuperate. When she didn’t, Debra resolved: I will live for me and her both (and later named her own daughter after her friend). Once Debra recovered, she realized the brush with death had taken away her fear of pursuing a career. Working at an HR job, one of the photographers said she looked good on camera and did she model? “When I found out how much I could make being a model I said sign me up!” Her coworkers kindly made a portfolio for her and sent it to an agent who signed her right away and landed her some very lucrative work with Mary Kay Cosmetics and a couple of national commercials. Then, they asked if she would like to do some extra work on the hit TV show Dallas.
now-husband TW Hale (singer, writer, producer) had caught her eye while she was still in Texas (I saw him singing one night—oh my), they both believed that a long distance relationship would not work. But that first spark grew into a fire that weathered separations, eating spam and beans, and all the ups and downs of the life of an artist. “We did our craft first, then lived on nothing.” Four weeks before their wedding, her appendix burst, and she almost died from an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. Trying to pursue her career for the next 8 years in LA and New York while hubby was in Nashville, Debra one day realized “I didn’t get married to live somewhere else. I packed my bags and came to Nashville” to be with my husband. “I feel like God blessed me because I did the right thing. I wanted to do what He wanted me to do. He sent me work in Nashville that I didn’t know existed!” At one time, she was the spokesperson for 25 car dealerships all over the country and was able to spend a lot of time raising her daughter.
There she met producer Leonard Katzman via a bold move to ask permission to take pictures on the set with her Kodak camera. He agreed as long as he wasn’t filming. “I was too green to be nervous. He asked me to do a cold read—I didn’t even know what that was until I took classes later—and he told me I had great instinct.” She landed a part opposite Steve Kanaly (Ray Krebbs) and met all the Ewings while filming the annual barbeque shindig…including Patrick Duffy (Bobby Ewing), whose part in one episode required that he do the Cotton Eyed Joe. But there was a problem: He didn’t know that dance. Debra stepped up and taught him. After strong encouragement from Mr. Katzman, Debra moved to LA where he helped her land an agent the first week she was in town. She did modeling and commercial work through the prestigious Wilhelmina Agency, landed a national commercial for A-1 Steak Sauce and a part on The Love Boat her first month in town. She then went on to beat out 1500 girls who tried out for a Dick Clark movie which was landed her a spot on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Debra had found success through her travels and work in Dallas, LA and New York—but not yet a satisfied love. Though her
“60 today is not what it was for my parents or grandparents. I’m not nearly ready to retire. I see a new chapter. Success is different at every stage of life. These days I enjoy my family, friends, and working on projects that mean something to me. This next chapter has begun with some great opportunities. I was able to land a part in a movie that will open nationwide on August 25 called “All Saints”. It’s a true story that took place here in Tennessee and has a great cast with John Corbett and Barry Corbin. This film shows how God can work miracles…. in His way. I saw a rough cut of the film and it is so very good. I’m also writing a book and working on some business opportunities as well. I want people to know that there is nothing accidental or random about our lives. Jeremiah 29:11 says "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Life is good and one of the great things about life after 55 is this….all the experiences and knowledge earned from all those years has given me a grateful heart and a joyful attitude because I know the end of the story.

Pontchartrain Beach Remembering Thrilling Rides and Tiki drinks at Bali Ha’i
The Milneburg, (Port Ponchartrain) Lighthouse, once part of Kiddie Land, stands moument across the midway from where the legendary Beach Stage once stood.
If you grew up in New Orleans, chances are you went to Pontchartrain Beach or you have heard someone’s story about how they took their first date to the Bali Hi restaurant or dared to ride the Zephyr or Wild Maus. Pontchartrain Beach was an amusement park located in New Orleans, Louisiana, on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain. It was founded by Harry J. Batt Sr. and later managed and owned by his sons, Harry J. Batt Jr. and John A. Batt. Between 1939 and 1983, Ponchartrain Beach was one of the most popular attractions in the City of New Orleans. Originally, the land along the shore of Lake Pontchartrain was the resort town of Milneburg. During the 1930’s, the Orleans Levee Board, with funding by the Works Progress Administration, reclaimed the land and added a concrete bath house, provisions for concessions, and sand beach that stretched almost a mile in length. When Harry Batt saw that there was an opportunity to further develop this tract of land, he moved one of his amusement parks to the new beach.

FAREWELL AND THE FUTURE After 44 years, Pontchartrain
Beach was closed due to declining attendance. On Sept. 24, 1983, thousands showed up to say their final farewell. Fats Domino, Irma Thomas and Frankie Ford were among the musicians who performed during Pontchartrain Beach’s final day. Folks took their last rides on the Zephyr and Wild Maus and soaked up the nostalgia before a midnight jazz funeral ended it all at 11:30 p.m. But even though the land is now occupied by the University of New Orleans Research & Technology Park, there is still hope for the a milelong sand beach that remains. Accessible now only by boat, The Pontchartrain Basin Foundation is currently raising funds to bring in 17,000 tons of white sand in order to reopen the beach to the public. You can donate to “Help Bring Back the Beach at www.saveourlake.org. If you are one of the lucky ones who got to experience the fun at Pontchartrain Beach first hand, you can help Bryan Batt with his upcoming book, Pontchartrain Beach: A Family Affair. Batt, a renowned actor and son of Harry Batt, is asking for help in tracking down old pictures of Pontchartrain Beach as well as those unique stories that reflect the good times had by all. Send your memories or photographs to beachbook2016@yahoo.com.
DINING
While most of the younger set went to the beach to enjoy the rides and the water, there was no shortage of food, drink or entertainment at the park. Whether one’s taste was for hot dogs, cotton candy or fine gourmet dining at the Bali Hai restaurant, the Beach had something for everyone’s taste. The Bali Hai, an upscale Polynesian Restaurant which featured the famous “Fog Cutter” served in a Tiki glass. Lavish with a South Seas décor with nets, bamboos, woven palm fronds and shells everywhere, it was a great place for special dining occasions, prom night dinners, parties, and family gatherings.
The Bali H’ai Fog Cutter 8 oz OJ
4 oz dark rum
4 oz brandy 6 oz lime juice 4 oz gin
4 oz light rum
6 oz simple syrup 1/4 oz almond extract
THE RIDES
For many years, Harry Batt traveled the world in search of wilder and more attractive rides for the park. As a result, Pontchartrain Beach boasted some of the most modern and daring rides that were ever manufactured by European or American builders. Here are some of the rides that made Pontchartrain Beach so popular: The Zephyr Added in 1939, this wooden roller coaster reached a soaring height of 68 feet at its highest crest.
Putt-Putt Golf Right as Putt-Putt was becoming popular, Batt added a championship miniature course that was one of the finest in the nation.
The Carousel Dating back to the late 1800, this was the oldest ride. The music was from an air powered pipe organ built by the Wurlitzer Company.
Wild Maus One of the first thrilling rides that Batt installed after World War II, this ride used single car trains on a track with very tight turns. Because the front of the car traveled past the turn before changing directions, it gave the sensation that the car would fall off the track.
Musik Express Added in the 1960’s, this ride featured popular music with cars that spun in a circle on a platform that spun in the opposite direction. The Haunted House An eerie ride down semi dark halls lined with ghouls and creepy characters.
The Galaxi Introduced in the 70’s was one of the most thrilling rides featuring a height of 45 feet, a speed of 35 mph and a drop of 32 feet.
Other rides included: the Zephyr Junior, Smoky Mary, Musik Express, Log Ride, The Ragin’ Cajun, The Bug, Paratrooper, Scrambler, Calypso, Airplanes, Ghost Train, bumper cars, carousel, Ferris wheel, the Monster, Trabant, Sky Ride, Hard Rock, Galaxy, Laff in the Dark, Magic Rainbow, Red Baron, and Kiddieland.
ENTERTAINMENT
This unique outdoor stage hosted some of the world’s most famous talent including a visit by the legendary Elvis Presley in 1956. From concerts to daring circus acts, the Beach Stage was unparalleled for entertainment in the New Orleans area and the shows were FREE to all Beach patrons. Throughout the beach’s history, and particularly following World-War II, the Batt Family brought some of the world’s most famous high wire and circus acts to this stage. Also notable were the Miss New Orleans and other such beauty contests presented from the beach stage. Later, in the 1970s, the stage became the venue for open air concerts featuring popular rock bands of the day. Those later concerts were sponsored in conjunction with some of New Orleans’ rock music radio stations.

10 Ways to Beat the Heat
Health & Fitness
Indoor Activities to Help You Stay Cool
When the heat is unbearable outdoors, it is hard to keep our minds and bodies active. At Lifestyles 55 Plus, we asked our readers to tell us what they do to beat the heat, here are some tips they shared...
• Take in a movie, especially on a hot afternoon when the prices are lower and the air conditioning feels great!
• Visit your local bookstore and get an iced coffee or treat while you linger over a book or magazine. • Go “mall walking”. Many malls offer early hours when the mall is open specifically for walkers, but you can also go stroll around any time. • Be a tourist in your own city and plan outings to local museums and indoor cultural events. • Take this time to get organized! Slowly go through closets or files, and give away or throw away, depending on the condition of the items. • Go to your local gym and sign up for a water aerobics class. • Plan ahead for the holidays by putting together gift lists and organizing your address book if you still send out Christmas cards. • Learn something new by taking a course on-line or in person. Courses range from art classes to language lessons. • Ask your loved one to teach you something. Perhaps he/ she can give you pointers on how to cook or you can learn a new card game. • Listen to your favorite tunes and share your special music collection with your loved ones with an ipod playlist or compact disk. Remember to stay cool and hydrated and keep a supply of fresh fruit and fluids handy. If you have a good idea on how to stay cool in the summer months, share it with us on our

With summertime here, thoughts of warm Polynesian islands and swaying palm trees fill the minds of many dreaming of relaxing vacations in the sun. One of these islands in Hawaii holds a sad and compelling history that few tourists are aware of.

Between the Wines rating:
FOUR OUT OF FIVE STEMS
This month’s Between the Wines selection touches upon that history. The novel, Moloka’i by Alan Brennert, is an interesting and compassionate piece of historical fiction about a young girl who is banished to the little known leper settlement in Hawaii during the turn of the 20th century. Although the child suffers from a mild case of leprosy (now known as Hansen’s disease), her life is altered tragically by its course. Forced to leave her family and everything she holds dear, she begins her life as an outcast at a convent at the leper settlement on the island of Moloka’i. What evolves is a warm and poignant tale of people with this illness who face their fate as society’s pariahs with grace and dignity. This enlightening novel reminds us of the ways that previously untreatable illnesses

Next month's selection: A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
If you grew up in 20th century Louisiana, you probably shuddered when the words Carville or leprosy were uttered, since a leper colony existed here until the late 90s. It’s gone now, and thank goodness so are the misconceptions and prejudices concerning Hansen’s Disease. The story, interwoven with Hawaiian history and lore, intimately goes beyond the stereotypes of lepers as pariahs who don’t deserve a full life.

could affect the course of its victim’s lives forever. Hawaiian natives were especially vulnerable to diseases brought by European settlers because they had little to no immunity to diseases like small pox, Hansen’s and cholera. The leper faced more difficulties than those with other diseases because the disease was so disfiguring and was associated with such negative religious connotations. Once a person was diagnosed with leprosy, they were quarantined and considered legally dead. We selected this book because of its dignified treatment of the disease and its victims as well as its relevance to Louisiana, which once housed the Carville leper colony in its southern region. The Carville Colony was home of the first leprosarium in the continental US, which lasted from 1894-1999.
Liz:
I really enjoyed this story as it provided a glimpse into Hawaii’s history before the scourge of leprosy was treatable. It’s an interesting novel, but a painful reminder of what people unfortunate enough to get this illness had to endure.
Marlene:
Historical fiction and a love letter to Hawaii, this is the story of a child with leprosy who is sent to Moloka’i for the rest of her life. Great sadness, but quiet compassion radiates from this story.

Focus on UI by Laura Desrosiers, DO Laura Desrosiers, DO, is an Ochsner physician experienced in treating urinary incontinence. To schedule an appointment, please call 855.312.4190.
Urinary Incontinence For many, a trip to the bathroom is something that can easily be delayed. However, holding it in is not an option for roughly 25 million Americans who suffer from some form of urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence (UI) is the involuntary leakage of urine. Control over the urinary sphincter is either lost or weakened. UI can happen at any age, but it’s more common in older adults. According to the National Association for Continence, one in five individuals over the age of 40 suffer from overactive bladder. In the nursing home population, at least 50 percent of residents have elderly UI. Incontinence impacts a person’s social life and reduces long-term quality of life. Although there are several types of UI, stress, urgency and mixed incontinence are the three more common types. With stress urinary incontinence (SUI), weak pelvic muscles allow urine to escape. SUI is more common in older women and happens when the pelvic floor muscles have
stretched. Physical activity puts pressure on the bladder, causing leakage. Leaking may occur with exercise, walking, bending, or even sneezing and coughing. You may experience a few drops of urine to a tablespoon or more. Some risk factors are pregnancy, having a large baby or long labor. There are several non-surgical as well as surgical options to help treat SUI. Urgency incontinence, also referred to as overactive bladder (OAB), involves urinary leakage as well. However, this type of incontinence is often preceded by urgency. Urgency is defined as a strong desire to urinate that cannot be delayed. With OAB, your brain tells your bladder to empty, even when it isn’t full. Or the bladder muscles are too active, and they contract (squeeze) to pass urine before your bladder is full. This causes the urge (need) to urinate. There are several risk factors, including an underlying neurologic problem, previous surgery or obesity, just to name a few. Behavioral modifications, dietary avoidance of bladder irritants and pelvic floor exercises are common therapies in the treatment of OAB. There are also several medications and procedures that
may be helpful treatments for more advanced cases of OAB. Some people leak urine with activity (SUI) and often feel the urge to urinate (OAB). This is mixed urinary incontinence, a combination of both stress and urgency incontinence. Typically with this type of incontinence, the symptoms that are most bothersome are treated first. Incontinence is a common part of aging, but it’s never normal. Many people think that they should just accept it because it’s so common, but there are ways to help and even cure UI. If you are bothered by any of the symptoms mentioned above, evaluation by a Urogynecologist or a Urologist may be helpful to provide an assessment of the problem and review both non-surgical and surgical treatment options. To Make: • Preheat large sauté pan over high heat. • Season shrimp with ½ of Creole Seafood Seasoning and lightly toss. • Preheat a large skillet over high heat, put the oil in the pan, and heat until the oil begins to smoke. Place garlic and rosemary in the pan and stir to brown garlic. Be very careful not to burn. • Add shrimp and carefully stir. • Add Worcestershire, hot sauce, lemon juice and lemon quarters. • Deglaze with beer, stirring to release any bits clinging to the bottom, and boil the mixture to reduce while shaking the pan. Allow shrimp to cook 2 to 2½ minutes (timing will depend on size) and add remaining Seafood Seasoning and salt and pepper to taste. When shrimp are finished cooking, the liquid will have a sauce consistency. Reduce heat to medium high and add butter. Sauté until butter is emulsified and sauce is thick. Adjust seasoning. Remove lemon quarters. Serve with French bread, lots of napkins, and finger bowls. Garnish each serving with a lemon piece.
Note: You need to have head-on shrimp because the fat content in the body is what gives this dish some of its flavor. Make sure the shrimp are fresh. Check color, smell, and attachment of head and legs. Because of the weight of the head and shells, one pound yields only about 8 oz. of meat. This dish is cooked very fast, so preparation is key. It is critical that the garlic is not burned while cooking the shrimp.
