Life + Business Success 1. IT STARTS WITH THE BELIEF Almost everyone who’s ever been success-
ful decided at some point that they were just not destined for the average life. You have to believe that you too can achieve greatness and that you will be able to live your dreams out one day. The belief in something goes a long way when you’re putting all your effort into something. 2. LEARN HOW TO TURN NEGATIVES INTO POSITIVES Sometimes there's no escaping negative aspects of life. You’re likely to experience some failures when trying to achieve your goals. Building a business is incredibly hard work and I’d be surprised if you nailed everything perfectly first time. 3. NOTHING WORTH HAVING COMES EASY If you’re expecting it to be easy, it won’t be. Your dreams are dreams for a reason. It’s the ultimate peak you want to climb to in your lifetime; and it’s likely that at the moment of deciding exactly what you want in life, you were fairly far away from achieving that vision. The point is that reaching your goals is going to take work–you can’t give up. And you can’t skate by doing the bare minimum. 4. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THOSE YOU WISH TO BE LIKE It’s a true fact that you become like the individuals you spend the most amount of time with. You start to think like them and do the same things as them.
5. BE PROUD TO BE YOURSELF Many people adopt
these thoughts that they can’t do something because of how they look, their personality or their voice, so they try to be something they’re not. Which is where things start to go wrong. There is nothing wrong with who you are. The idea that you look like or come across in a certain negative way to people isn’t true. Be proud to be yourself and people will begin to recognize you for who you actually are, and that’s how you start to make a proper name for yourself and who you are. It’s very easy to see through all the fakes, and it lowers everyone’s trust in them. Just be yourself !

WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS FOR THE NEW YEAR by: Kelly Walgamotte
I
t’s the small things that count and with weight loss it’s the small habits that add up to big changes. By simply doing one or two of the habits mentioned below you notice a difference. The power is in numbers. By combing all of the habits below with a good healthy diet I personal guarantee success in your weight loss journey. Stick to these habits for a good 8 weeks and rejoice in your newly found body.
1
Hire a personal trainer to hold you accountable. Having someone to hold you accountable while on your weight loss journey could be the difference between success and failure. Everyone needs a second pair of eyes to keep them on track while guiding them to success.
2
Study your eating habits. Are you eating junk or sugary food late at night, nibbling while cooking, finishing the kids dinner? Take a look around, and it will be easy to identify a few behaviors you can change that will add up to big calorie savings. It’ll be hard to succeed if you truly don’t know yourself.
3
Learn to read the nutritional facts on foods. Pay attention to serving sizes and the content of the food you’re about to eat. It’s all about the protein, carbs, and fats. Remember knowledge is power. Know what you putting in your mouth. Don’t just put something in there because it taste good. Save that for your cheat meals.
Pg. 6
LIFESTYLES
4
Fail to plan, plan to fail. You need a plan and strategy for you meals. Take a few hours in the week to cook and pack your meals. Pack into Ziploc bags or storage containers. This is the number one key to success.
5
Start your day with breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day. After a long night’s rest, your body needs the fuel to get your metabolism going and give you energy for the rest of the day.
6
If you snack during the day, treat the snack like a mini-meal. The best way to snack is with a high protein snack. Throw some fat in there to create a feeling of fullness. Stay away from junk and process foods.
7
Eat for you body not your tongue. Everything you put into your mouth should have a purpose. Think of it like planting a garden. You wouldn’t plant weeds on purpose only plants that add to the beauty of the garden. So is it
with food. Your body is the garden. Don’t clutter it up with weeds (junk food).
8
Eat before you go to bed. Don’t fall victim of the age old saying Don’t eat after dinner. Somebody made that up a long time ago before we knew anything about nutrition. The key to this meal is to ONLY eat protein and fat and keep it somewhat small.
9
Eat carbs in the morning and fats in the evening. To really maximize your weight loss try eating carbs in the morning then switching to fats in the evening. Remember to keep protein with every meal.
10
Reward your self with cheat meals. If you going out with friends go ahead and indulge in some tasty foods. New Orleans has plenty to offer, just don’t go hog wild. Always have a plan, understand what your eating, and why you’re eating it. Remember these meals are designed as rewards for keeping up with you diet.
Keep yourself motivated by reading motivational books or quotes, talking with friends and family, or watching motivational videos. Either route you choose the main thing is MOTIVATION. The amount of free resources we have at our finger tips is unbelievable, use them. Remember, no war has ever been won by an unmotivated leader. You’re the leader in this war on weight loss. Lead the way in your life and change it. You can do this.
Louisiana Operation Lifesaver Mission and Strategic Plan Operation Lifesaver is an international, non-profit education and awareness program dedicated to ending tragic collisions, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights of way. Established in 1972 in Idaho by government officials, Law Enforcement and the Class 1 railroads that operated in the state, Operation Lifesaver helped reduce crashes by over 40% in the first year of existence. The program soon spread to other states, coming to Louisiana in 1981. To accomplish its mission, Operation Lifesaver promotes 3 E's: • Education: Operation Lifesaver strives to increase public awareness about the dangers around the rails. The program seeks to educate both drivers and pedestrians to make safe decisions at crossings and around railroad tracks. • Enforcement: Operation Lifesaver promotes active enforcement of traffic laws relating to crossing signs and signals and private property laws related to trespassing. • Engineering: Operation Lifesaver encourages continued engineering research and innovation to improve the safety of railroad crossings.

s e i r r e b e u l B what they can Do For you
Do you like the tangy taste of blueberries? Most people do, and if you do, then you will like them even more after knowing how wonderful these berries are for your health. For those who are not fans, or who don't know them quite as well, a small introduction won’t hurt before we proceed to all the amazing health benefits of this “superfood”.
WHAT ARE BLUEBERRIES? Blueberries are fruits that belong to the Vaccinium family and can be found in three types. First is the wild or the “low-bush” blueberry, which bears the scientific name Vaccinium angustifolium. The second variety, Vaccinium corymbosum, is commonly known as the cultivated or the “high-bush” blueberry. There is one other type, but that variety is quite uncommon and has the scientific name Vaccinium pallidum.

AMAZING BENEFITS 1. Delay aging
If we consider the effect of free radicals on aging as the main cause of various symptoms, then blueberries bring you the brightest ray of hope for staying young. These “superfoods” are packed with antioxidants and ranked number 1 in the world of antioxidants. This is mainly due to the presence of anthocyanin, a pigment responsible for the blue color of the blueberries. The abundance of vitamin C is also a big factor for this impressive claim as well. You can prevent signs of aging like wrinkles, age spots, cataracts, osteoporosis, hair loss, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease by eating blueberries and get the most out of the antioxidant potential!
2. improve Brain Function Again, the antioxidant properties of blueberries come into play. The anthocyanin, selenium, vitamin A, C, E, vitamin B complex, zinc, sodium, potassium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese can heal neurotic disorders by preventing the degeneration and death of neurons. These essential nutrients also protect brain cells and help to restore the health of the central nervous system. It is hard to believe that these berries can also cure serious problems like Alzheimer’s disease to a great extent. They even heal damaged brain cells and neuron tissues to keep your memory sharp for a very long time.
3. treat urinary tract inFection The formation of certain bacterial colonies like E-coli along the lining of the inner walls of the urinary tract is responsible for this
infection. It results in inflammation, which is a burning sensation during the passage of urine. For this condition, blueberries can be surprisingly beneficial. They have a compound formed of large, polymer-like molecules, which inhibit the growth of such bacteria. They also have certain antibiotic properties which add to this effect. These heavy molecules scrub the bacteria off the walls along the tract, thereby preventing the infection. So far, this compound has only been found in cranberries and blueberries.
4. prevent cancer Blueberries can prove to be extremely valuable for cancer patients, for they contain certain compounds like pterostilbene (an excellent remedy for colon and liver cancer) and ellagic acid. These two in harmony with anthocyanin and other antioxidants like vitamin C and copper can do miracles to both prevent and cure cancer.
5. Boost immunity Blueberries can boost your immune system and prevent infections. Once your immune system is strong, you won’t catch colds, fever, pox, and countless other communicable diseases spread by bacteria and viruses. Other Benefits & Facts: Blueberries keep you feeling fresh, active, fit, sharp, and in a good mood, as they are very good antidepressants. You also won’t need to spend a lot of money on medicine, because blueberries are effective against many conditions. There are also no negative side effects associated with this “superfood”. So, eat them until your tongue turns blue and you will live a long and healthy life. One final interesting thing to know about blueberries: the darker the color of the blueberries, the richer they are in antioxidants and other medicinal nutrients.

Beneficiaries With Special Needs Require Special Attention P ublic benefits help provide care our special needs loved ones need to help them lead fulfilling lives. Assets left to these beneficiaries, should be left in a specially-drafted “Special Needs Trust” so that the beneficiary is not disqualified from public benefits. In addition to Special Needs Trusts, there is a new tool in the planning toolbox: the ABLE account. The name comes from the legislation: Achieving a Better Life Experience, or “ABLE” Act. An ABLE account can be established for a beneficiary who became disabled before age 26. Although the beneficiary is the owner, the account may be established by the beneficiary, the beneficiary’s agent, curator, tutor, or parent. However, there may be only one ABLE account per beneficiary. A donor may contribute up to $15,000 each year, adjusted for inflation. In many ways, an ABLE account is similar to a 529 plan used for education. For example, the in-
come on assets in the account accrues tax-deferred. If account distributions are used for “qualified disability expenses” those distributions are income-tax free. Such expenses include a broad range of basic living expenses such as housing and transportation, as well as assistive technology, support services, health-related expenses, and financial expenses like management and legal fees. If distributions are used for a qualified disability expense, the distribution would be taxable and there would be a 10% penalty on the amount used for such expenses. Given the broad definition, it’s unlikely that you would have difficulty using the assets for a qualified disability expense. As long as the balance in the ABLE account is under $100,000, the account is disregarded for the purpose of qualification for Supplemental Security Income (“SSI”), and the account is disregarded for Medicaid qualification regardless of the balance. Like a “Self-Settled” Special Needs Trust, at the beneficiary’s death,
assets remaining in the ABLE account are first used to reimburse Medicaid. An ABLE account is particularly attractive when used in conjunction with a Special Needs Trust. For example, distributions from a Special Needs Trust for certain basic living expenses like housing can reduce SSI. On the other hand, distributions for such expenses from an ABLE account do not reduce SSI, and are tax-free as qualified disability expenses. If you care about a special needs child, consider establishing an ABLE account. An ABLE account can add flexibility and tax benefits, too! ABLE accounts and Special Needs Trust’s are two tools that can help maintain financial eligibility of a person with special needs, while allowing them to Achieve a Better Life Experience. If you want more information on ABLE accounts and special needs planning, you should consult an experienced estate planner or elder law attorney, or attend one of our upcoming free seminars.

COAST Announces New Coffee and Dessert Programs Since 1968, the St. Tammany Council on Aging (COAST) has been providing recreational activities and nutritious lunches for seniors throughout the parish. The mornings have always been a busy time at COAST’s seven senior centers, but once lunch is finished, things slow down. A new program hopes to change that. Beginning in January, the Slidell Senior Center and the Covington Senior Center will each host a monthly Coffee and Dessert presentation. The presentations will take place at 12:30 p.m. “Both the Slidell and Covington centers are located near many governmental offices and private businesses. We are hoping that in addition to our regular lunch clients, seniors who are still in the workforce will come have coffee and dessert with us. We have some great presentations scheduled,” said COAST Executive Director Julie Agan. The Slidell Coffee and Dessert presentations will take place on the second Wednesday of the month and currently include presentations by such notables as Peggy Scott Laborde, who will speak about the New Orleans tri-centennial and Heath Allen, who will address “The Changing World of News Gathering.” The Slidell Center is at 610 Cousin Street. The Covington Coffee and Dessert presentations will take place on the second Thursday of the month. An impressive list of presenters includes Lisa Condrey Ward, who will chronicle the “Rebirth of the Southern Hotel” and 81 year old author Murray James, Jr, whose book "A Poor Man Can Survive " tells the story of his life and the strong work ethic imparted by his father. The Covington Center is at 500 North Theard Street. “Kudos to our activities coordinators Tiffany McGary-Cyprian and Sharon Snowdy for pulling together some great speakers. We invite all seniors in St. Tammany to join us for Coffee and Dessert,” Agan said. POSEIDON RIDES AGAIN article by Becky Rolland
THE KREWE OF POSEIDON,
named after the Greek God of the Sea, embodies the perfect theme for the Slidell area which is surrounded by water. Founded in 2015, this co-ed krewe began with just a handful of Slidell residents who sought to revitalize Carnival for the Northshore. Expanding from 440 riders for its inaugural ride in 2016 to 570 riders in 2017, Poseidon has quickly become of the largest and most successful carnival krewes north of the Lake. Krewe Captain, Ronny D. Kastner, was selected to lead the group because of his experience serving on the boards of other Slidell carnival organizations. A retired Assistant Chief Patrol Agent, he spent 27 years supervising federal law enforcement programs. “When we met to discuss forming Poseidon,” he told us, “we knew we wanted more than just another carnival krewe. We all agreed that wanted a co-ed krewe with all the grand traditions of a New Orleans carnival club.
After that, we made a lofty two year plan that included costumes, large bands and quality floats. Then it was time to work on capital to make it all happen. We actually exceeded our goals so our inaugural ride was in 2016 instead of 2017.”
A DETAILED PARADE PLAN
Once they agreed that their mission was to provide the citizens of Slidell with an exceptional parade indicative of the history and traditions of a New Orleans Mardi Gras, the Krewe of Poseidon immediately got to work. During the planning phase, there were plenty decisions to be made including: • Choosing A Name–The name Poseidon was chosen because Slidell is surrounded by water. Along with the name came a lot of possibilities for themes and trademark items, such as tridents, sea shells, mermaids, and seahorses. • Creating a Consistent Brand–Poseidon chose the colors turquoise and fuch-
sia and had a bright, bold and elegant logo designed that incorporated the god of Poseidon along with a mermaid, dolphin and shells. Their colors are beautifully incorporated into the float design and costumes as well as their signature throws and plush toys. • Seeing the Parade from the Rider’s Perspective–According to Kastner, the perfect formula for a magnificent parade is to realize that spectators come for different reasons. The Krewe of Poseidon holds their float design to a high standard for those who come to see artistic expression. For those who come for revelry, Poseidon recruits the best bands and dancing clubs available. And for those who come to catch, Poseidon features a large arrangement of throws and collectables. “It was important to us to ensure that we have extraordinary keepsake throws, so that people will come back every year for more,” Kastner added.
ADDING ROYALTY
In keeping with the tradition of a grandiose Carnival Krewe, the Krewe of Poseidon needed a King and Queen. “We wanted a process that allowed anyone of our krewe members to have a chance to be royalty,” Kastner explained, “so each year we ask that whoever is interested, write a letter to our Board stating their desire and plan. Once we receive the letters, I vet them and then consult with four officers of the Board of Directors before making a selection. This year’s King and Queen, Michael and Katie Havert are a great choice because they are personable, enthusiastic and they take their role of promoting our organization very seriously.” Coroneted in July in front of an audience of 620, the Haverts consider it their honor to represent Slidell and bring their friends and family together to support the Krewe of Poseidon. A native of Slidell, Mike said he has watched Slidell triple in size over the past 20 years and has seen many carnival krewes come and go. When asked why he and Katie joined Poseidon, he said that while he was having dinner at KY’s restaurant, he overheard some friends discussing their plans to start the krewe. “Without hesitation, I told them I was ready to join. I even wanted to hand them my check for membership right then but they told me they hadn’t even decided on the name yet. That will give you an indication of how excited we were to join.” Katie, who rode for 8 years in an all women krewe, is a native of Panama who loves carnival. From the moment she and Mike were chosen to be King and Queen, Katie knew she wanted to part of the costume design process. After asking the Board and being granted permission to add feathers to the costumes, she commissioned companies in New Orleans and Mobile to help her bring her vision to life. The result – the royalty costumes are stunning! Taking their role as King and Queen to heart, the Haverts may have added new traditions to the Krewe of Poseidon. In September, they held a King and Queen’s Gala at the Slidell Auditorium. The event,
Pg. 16
LIFESTYLES
which featured two bands had approximately 500 in attendance. Special guests included Slidell’s Mayor, Freddie Drennan and Chief of Police, Randy Fandal. Also when the King and Queen ride, it will be a family affair, as the Haverts will have their sons, Tyler (28), Jeremy (25), and their daughters, Hannah (17) and Michaela (15) on the float with them. With their signature throw, mini king cakes from Randazzo’s bakery; Mike and Katie have not hesitated in spreading their excitement about this year’s ride on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. Dressed in their full regalia and equipped with mini king cakes and throws, the Haverts along with some of Poseidon lieutenants and maids have visited many schools, assisted living and nursing homes in Slidell and surrounding areas.
MORE THAN A RIDE
Of course, everyone sees what a carnival krewe does on the day they ride, but what about the other days? Another thing that makes the Krewe of Poseidon great is its commitment to community. “From the very beginning we knew that we want to engage in activities that promote social interaction, philanthropy, and advancing the overall quality of life,” Kastner told us. “We gather clothing and supplies for ongoing efforts such as the Slidell Ladies of Liberty and the St. Tammany Food Bank as well as for specific donations such as the Hurricane Harvey relief drive sponsored by Toyota of Slidell.” Partnering with The Blood Center, the krewe plans to sponsor a January blood drive in which donors that give will receive a free Slidell Mardi Gras themed themed T-shirt.

“We do a lot of things that people don’t see, but there is no doubt that we want the part they do see to be spectacular and memorable,” Kastner said. “We have worked hard to establish our reputation as a quality krewe and we want to ensure that we remain consistent. When the ride is over, we ask people what they thought about us by gathering reviews from the
city, police department, and social media and make sure we are doing the best we can. We don’t want to settle for ‘good’, we want to knock it out the park every year!” Whatever the Krewe of Poseidon is doing, they are doing it right. One sign of success is that the quality bands and dance groups have lined up to have the opportunity to be part of their momentum. Traditionally, the full showing of the parade line up is kept a secret until 2 weeks before they roll, but Kastner gave us a sneak peek. “This year we are thrilled to announce that the 610 Stompers will join us for the first time! We also have the Landry Walker High School’s marching band joining us as well as The Dance Connection, Mandy Milkshakers and New Orleans Bells.”
INTERESTED IN JOINING?
Although the Krewe of Poseidon accepts applications throughout the year, the best time to join this vibrant carnival krewe is in March or April. The sooner you join, the sooner you will start having fun. Yearly events include a Crawfish Boil in the spring, two golf tournaments, a Holloween Party, five social events for members and quarterly general membership meetings. New Year BODY DETOX SUPPLEMENTS THAT CLEANSE & REVITALIZE THE BODY
by: Megan Hazell
W
hen we talk about cleansing the body, we can be referring to a number of different things. There are so many ways to clean out and flush the body of toxins, pollutants and junk. One of the best ways to do this, of course, is to alter your diet. A diet that is heavy in saturated fats and white, nutrient-robbing flours and sugars will leave you feeling sluggish, tired and irritable. This is the body’s way of telling you that it is not clean. It’s important to listen to your body and heed its warnings. If you’re experiencing a noticeable lack of energy and aren’t

feeling like yourself, it’s time to take action and regain your body’s natural, balanced state. Luckily, there are several all-natural supplements that can cleanse the body from the inside out. Toxins and harmful contaminants are typically ingested by way of fast food, junk food or exposure to environmental pollutants. You can start to rid the body of these toxins by eliminating these foods from your diet, and eating a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. To bolster your dietary efforts and cleanse your body faster, you can take certain supplements.
Green Tea Supplements
Dandelion Supplements
One such supplement is green tea. Green tea is a superb antioxidant that has been used for centuries. This antioxidant powerhouse has only recently gained mainstream attention in the United States. Some experts even estimate that green tea has ten times the antioxidant properties of fruits and vegetables! Drinking just one or two cups of green tea per day can help your body fight off infections and diseases naturally. It works by modifying the body’s metabolism, so that it’s able to ward off and detoxify chemicals that would otherwise remain harmful inside the body. The polyphenols found in green tea literally scour the body internally for any cell-dam- aging free radicals, and when they are found, they destroy them. Green tea is a natural, easy way to cleanse your body of cancer-causing agents and other harmful contaminants.
Another herb that works along the same lines as milk thistle is dandelion. Dandelion is also notable for its natural liver cleansing properties, and has been used in liver treatment as well as preliminary diabetes treatment and gall bladder cleansing. This herb also acts as an anti-inflammatory. It can further be used as a diuretic, and tends to help people eliminate greater amounts of toxins through the loss of urine. If you supplement with dandelion, be sure to drink plenty of water to flush out toxins even faster and to make up for the water loss you may experience.
Milk Thistle Supplements
One last herbal supplement that can complete your cleanse is burdock or burdock root. Burdock is actually one of four ingredients in a popular herbal tea mixture called Essiac that is sold as an alternative treatment for cancer patients. It is also used to treat diabetes and other gastrointestinal diseases. Even if you do not suffer from any of these maladies, burdock is a wonderful additional herb to add to your cleansing routine. Before you start cleansing your blood and organs with these teas and herbs, be sure to check with your doctor, especially if you take other medications that may interact with these herbs. After all, these supplements work because they are potent. So as long as your doctor gives it the thumbs up, here’s to a cleaner, healthier and revitalized you!
Another great cleansing supplement that can help revitalize the body is an herb called milk thistle. It is a flowering herb that is related to the daisy and ragweed, believe it or not. Milk thistle is best known for its use as an all natural liver cleanser, and can be a good alternative for treatment of cirrhosis, gallbladder disorders, jaundice and hepatitis. The main ingredient found in milk thistle is silymarin, which acts as both an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory; therefore, milk thistle is quite useful in cleansing the body (and particularly the liver) even if you do not have any of the conditions listed above. It has even been suggested that milk thistle can cleanse and help to restore the liver of people who have a history of alcohol abuse. Because alcohol and sugar are very closely related, there has also been some discussion as to whether milk thistle might be useful in diabetes treatment. Regardless, it is quite beneficial for the average person who wants to cleanse their body of everyday toxins. You can take this herb in capsule form or in a tincture, and use it as a daily supplement.
Burdock Root Supplements
Why Exercise is Good For eto ification Exercise is an important part of any detoxification program. Moving the body creates the conditions for the body to breathe, stretch, circulate and sweat. It is a good idea to drink lots of water during a detox period, so the skin can sweat and the kidneys can effectively filter toxins. By increasing your water intake, as well as increasing your heart and breathing rate, your body can more effectively flush out unwanted toxins, fats and waste.

Book Club Corner iz Maddo
This magazine is unfortunately only published once a month, and any self-proclaimed reader will confirm that we read plenty more than just one book a month! So, the Between the Wines Book Club has decided to dedicate the January issue to our favorite reads of 2017. I love this because I get so many good ideas for books to read in the New Year! 2017 was a banner year for good reads; it’s going to be tough for me to narrow it down to just a few... I’m going to start with my favorite, All the Ugly and Wonderful Things, by Bryn Greenwood. This is an intense story about drugs and abuse, but at the core are characters that are unique and well-developed. There’s nothing I love to see more in a good book than relationships, and this novel does not disappoint! Wavy and Kellen show the reader that family really can come in all shapes and forms.
The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See is next. I’ve been reading her work for years, and to her credit, she gets better and better with every novel. One of the opening lines is an old Chinese saying “No coincidence, no story.” I’m glad I was prepared because I frequently felt as if I were reading Charles Dickins with all the rich descriptive narrative about the Akha hill people of China.
My very close 2nd recommendation is Shelter. I finished this book in June, and I can’t stop thinking about it. The author Jung Yun delivers a main character Kyung who is spoiled and whinny, but I rooted for him throughout! What I loved best is that this could easily have become a book about the “crime” (no spoilers), instead of a novel about a family’s reaction to the crime. Bravo!
And finally, a book I just finished yesterday: Beartown by Fredrik Backman. It’s quite a departure from A Man Called Ove, and equally terrific. The main character is hockey yep, and even if you know nothing or care nothing about hockey, Backman does such a great job of telling a story with so many different characters and perspectives. I highly recommend it.
Cind
arbara During the holidays, my granddaughter Caroline and I searched the internet for jokes that SHE would “gets” and SHE could retell. There weren’t many out there. Then we were given two…as Caroline calls them, “real books.” In the Young Comic’s Guide to Telling Jokes, Books 1 and 2, local comedian Michael Strecker has packed hundreds of his original, funny puns for kids of all ages. Now with each turn of a page, laughter abounds and the entire family participates. These books are great indoor entertainment for those long wintery days!
Marlene Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures by Emma Straub is a character-driven novel about the life of an American actress from the 1930s to the 1980s. Elsa/Laura is a likable and ambitious young woman who wants to be a star. And so do we!! Midnight Cactus by Bella Pollen is a timely (2015) romance, adventure mystery set on the Mexican-American border. The reader gets insight into the turmoil and plight of illegally crossing the border and seeking a better life in the United States. The Golden Legend by Nadeem Aslan is a story of religious and cultural intolerance in modern day Pakistan. Poetically and beautifully written, but the author truthfully includes the pain and violence of that part of our world. All three books get five stems!

Happy Dreams is a work of fiction by famous Chinese author Jia Pingwa who offers an authentic and poignant look at the urbanization of China from the perspective of a simple, steadfast migrant worker. Happy Lui, whose name hints at his sunny and positive disposition, leaves his home in the countryside for a better life only to become a trash picker in the city of Xi’an. His struggles and adventures are both humorous and tragic, although his actions can be a little course at times. His relationships with the other workers in the city are so brutally honest and genuine that it is easy to feel compassion for him in his trials and tribulations. I highly recommended this work!
Cath Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty is my selection for the best read of 2017. After receiving a degree in Medieval history, twenty-something Caitlin Doughty takes a job at a crematory. She describes her foray into the field in this eye-opening memoir. Her fascination (obsession) eventually leads her to question our practices of death, and she makes it her life’s work to advocate for more natural and “green” burials. Although the subject matter is morbid, the author’s voice is anything but. She is alternately humorous and philosophical.
Next month we’ll return to our regular format, and the selection is News of the World by Paulette Jiles. You’re going to love this one! The book is currently in movie production with Tom Hanks in the lead role.

DON’T BE FOOLED Medicare Will Not Call You to Verify or Update Information
Get Ready FoR this PaRty!

Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) would like to alert Medicare beneficiaries, their family members and caretakers, of a new scam we’ve recently been informed of. Apparently, based on the news that new Medicare cards and numbers will be issued soon, scam artists are calling people posing as employees from Medicare or other government agencies, telling them that new cards are being issued and that for them to continue receiving benefits, the agency must “verify” or “update” identifying information. This includes their Medicare number and birth date and in some cases even financial accounts. Don’t be fooled. This is a scam to steal your personal information, money and possibly your identity. Here is some information you need to know: • Social Security number absent Medicare cards will be issued to new and existing beneficiaries from April 2018 to December 2019. • Medicare will not phone you asking you for personal information. This includes your Medicare number. Nor does Medicare email or visit your home unannounced to “verify” or “update” information it already has. • If you get a suspicious phone call, simply say, “I don’t give out personal information over the phone,” and hang up. • Report your experience at 1-877-272-8720 or go to www. stopmedicarefraud.org.

Tips for Working
Out your
Dog Dogs need their daily exercise, and even things like it being too cold or hot outside or the days getting shorter shouldn’t get in the way. Here are some tips on how to work out your dog’s body and mind indoors.
6 Ways to Exercise Your Dog Indoors 1. Run your dog up an d down the stairs
Using the stairs is a great way to tire out your dog. The steps add an additional challenge to a dog’s workout, as they engage different muscles than those used on a regular walk or run and add an e tra level of difficulty with the change in elevation. Stand at the top of the stairs and throw a toy down to your dog. When your dog grabs the toy, call his name and have him bring the toy to you. After several rounds of this, he’ll be winded.
2. Laser pointer Pick up an inexpensive laser pointer at a store and shine it back and forth across the floor. atch as your dog chases the laser back and forth and works out in the process. Be careful to avoid shining the laser directly in a dog’s eyes, as this can cause damage to its retinas. 3. Set up obstacle courses Look around for things in the environment that can be repurposed to help the dog. Like using that old hula hoop for him to leap through or using cushions to create a tunnel for him to navigate.
Pg. 26
LIFESTYLES
Map everything out and lead your dog through the various obstacles. This game will challenge your dog both mentally and physically.
4. Mak e your dog work for its treats
Take a variety of your dog’s favorite treats and hide them around the house – behind doors, under tables, underneath rugs, etc.Your dog will be so busy tracking down his treats that he’ll physically tire out in the process.Treat dispensing toys are another great way to keep your dog busy and engage them physically as they push around their toys and try to get to the food inside.
5. K eep away and fetch
Engage your dog in a good old-fashioned game of fetch and keep away. These games keep your dog engaged, active, and help to release spent up energy.
6. Take a socialized outing
Put your dog in the car (always remember to use a car restraint!) and head over to the nearest pet store. Walk your dog through the aisles, let him try out toys and sniff around.
Spiritual Maturity by: Dr. Larry T. McEwen
Start the New Year with Excitement
When you’re getting ready to start something brand new, are you ever tempted to start out with the negative? Well this could go wrong, and I probably won’t be able to do this or that, it’s going to be really hard, it’s going to cost too much, I may not even be able to do it and it was probably a silly idea anyway! Well, we’re getting ready to start a New Year and one of the things that should come along with maturity is the knowledge that in many ways the New Year is going to be what we make it. Of course, there are circumstances and situations on the outside we can’t foresee or control, but we do have the ability to decide what attitude we will have going forward. In other words, we can either embrace the New Year with anticipation and excitement, or we can face the New Year with dread and fear. A spiritually mature person realizes they are not alone. The Psalmist put it this way in Psalm 139:1-10
“O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.” NIV. I like to put it this way: Jesus is in front of me leading me, beside me holding my hand, behind me watching my back and underneath me holding me up! With that in mind I’m excited to welcome the New Year!
