If you haven’t realized it by now, the TFW program revolves around physical and mental challenges that are designed to make you more. These are not put in place to bring any of you TFW students down, but to bring you up. If you were allowed to live without meeting difficulties, you wouldn’t prosper. Life gives us challenges to make us stronger. Today’s motivation is all about that. A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the

wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Life's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. Remember nature needs no help, just no interference. There are processes of life, things we all go through. The struggles are a part of our journey and are preparing us for what awaits. Just like many of the challenges at TFW, they are preparing us to fly.

THE INFLUENZA VACCINE DOESN'T CAUSE AUTISM. A robust body of research continues to show that the influenza vaccine is safe and is not associated with autism. 5. THE FLU VACCINE CAN BE GIVEN AT THE SAME TIME AS OTHER VACCINES. The flu vaccine may be given at the same time as other vaccines, but at a robHOWELL different place on the body. It is also important to note that children 6 months through 8 years of age may need two doses spaced one month apart to be fully protected. These children should receive their first dose as soon as the vaccine is available in their community. Live vaccines (like the MMR and chickenpox vaccines) may be given together or at least 4 weeks apart. 6. CHILDREN WITH EGG ALLERGY CAN STILL GET THE FLU VACCINE. Children with an egg allergy can safely get the flu shot from their pediatrician without going to an allergy specialist. For children with a history of severe egg allergy, your pediatrician may recommend you see an allergy specialist.

They are very easy to make and garyDRAGON can be modified for individual taste preferences. I like to add banana and chopped walnuts to make a banana nut cookie. The white beans in this recipe add a creamy texture and fiber to the cookies.

When Ashwagandha is combined with the herb Bladderwrack it can help to stimulate the production of thyroid hormone. One of the best ways to determine if it is working for you, an approach that I’m in favor of is to test your thyroid hormones before you start taking it, then test 3-4 months later to see if there is a positive change. Your blood sugar level is the amount of glucose from what you eat that’s circulating in your bloodstream to provide energy. A well-balanced blood sugar level is crucial to your overall fitness and well-being, regulating your hormones, triggering your body to burn stored fat, and increasing your metabolism to help you lose weight. Banaba Leaf Extract has long been used in Philippine natural medicine for blood sugar control. The active compound in Banaba Leaf Extract is a triterpenoid called corosolic acid, which stimulates glucose transport into cells, and this regulates blood sugar levels and insulin in the blood. Bitter Melon Ex-
tract is the unripe fruit of a plant found in tropical locations. Bitter Melon has been shown to improve glucose tolerance and reduce fasting blood glucose levels without increasing blood insulin levels. Researchers in India found that patients with Type 2 diabetes supplemented with Bitter Melon had a significant reduction in both fasting and after-meal serum glucose levels. Studies have shown that cinnamon, the common kitchen spice frequently sprinkled on breakfast oatmeal and included in sweet potato pie, lowers blood glucose levels. Additional testing showed that cinnamon also has fat-burning properties. A popular herb called Gymnema Sylvestre extract has also been shown to be effective for weight loss when used in combination with other blood sugar control products. Providing your body with these key nutrients that it may be lacking could prove vital to your success this year in regards to losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle. Commit to trying them
for at least 90 days to assess maximum effectiveness. When taken in conjunction with smaller, well balanced, frequent meals spread out throughout the day and at least 30-60 minutes of daily exercise these all natural supplements can help you lose weight and feel great!

Carbs in the New Year by marisLEE So here we go. It’s a new year. That always brings visions of opportunity to start anew. Nutrition and fitness goals usually make the top 3 resolutions, many times coming in 1st. That brings us to the focus of this column. Carbs, what to do? What to do? High protein diets and high fat diets seem to come and go. Carbs on the other hand seem to wander in the periphery of our minds, and we never totally understand what our relationship should be with the mysterious nutrient. We, as a public, seem to have developed some sort of love-hate, “should I even have you in my life”, relationship with carbohydrates. I highly recommend you getting to understand what carbs are and learning to respect them; and through time, ultimately embracing them as a means to success. Dr. Robert Haas stated in his book, “Eat to Win”, that “Fats are burned in the flames of carbohydrates”. So there you have it, carbs stimulate metabolism. That, coupled with the fact that carbs fuel energy and overall thought processes, leads me to file carbs in the “need to have” category. On the flip, complex carbs, particularly pasta, bread, grains, pancakes, muffins, etc., all of which fall in to the starch category, can steer the body toward fluid retention and weight gain due to the 4 to 1 water binding ratio potential of carbohydrates. For every 1 pound of carbs we intake, we have the potential to add 4 pounds or more of water weight. Notice how I said potential. Aerobics, exercise, and proper diet help to expedite any excess fluid caused from carb intakes. Remember the body is a fluid laden organism consisting of 60-80% water volume. Therefore, the biggest potential for weight gain or weight loss is by manipulating carbohydrate intakes. Over the course of the next year, I will do my level best to continue to illuminate the role of carbohydrates have on our bodies, both positive and negative. The remarkable thing is that I continue to learn how carbs react in the body over the course of decades. These changes definitely affect the way we metabolize and utilize carbs in our body. I promise to report on these issues as I see them. “I report, you decide.” That would be a great slogan. Nah….it would never sell.
