CAN A DETOX DIET HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT?
Many plans claim to kick star t a sluggish metabolism by helping to purify the body. Our bodies, however, are designed to eliminate harmful substances without any help. The kidneys help excrete waste products, while the liver filters blood coming from the digestive tract and metabolizes drugs, alcohol and environmental toxins. There is no evidence that proves
DOES ZINC CURE THE COMMON COLD?
Zinc is thought to halt the replication of rhinoviruses, the most common cause of colds. A recent scientific analysis pooled data from previous studies that compared oral zinc treatments with placebo or no inter vention. It was found that zinc had no significant effect on the severity of symp-

Only zinc acetate caused a statistically significant reduction in symptom duration. Zinc gluconate and zinc sulfate were not successful. So if zinc can help kick a cold faster, how much should we take once we fell a cold coming on? The evidence says to star t using zinc within one to two days after the onset of a cold, 54-104 mg zinc daily.
Antioxidants are compounds that offset damage to the body’s cells. Antioxidants, including cer tain vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, defend against injuries caused by free radicals. But what’s a free radical? Simply, free radicals are oxygen molecules floating around in your system that contain an unpaired electric charge. This single “electron” looks for a buddy to gain stability and so it destructively steals a second electron from substances
When it comes to weight loss, the low-carb Atkins diet cer tainly gets a lot of press. However, weight loss occurs when you consume fewer total calories than your body needs, whether you’re cutting back on fat, protein or carbs. A sustainable strat-

a detox diet helps your organs do this more efficiently. Restricting your diet to raw produce or low-calorie beverage blends will help you shed pounds quickly, but this does not mean it’s advisable. While there are some benefits to free radicals, these highly reactive, unstable molecules are implicated in aging, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Human trial Approved in U.S. for Gene Editing Technology An advisor y panel at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has approved a proposal to use the gene-editing technology CRISPR on human cells. It’s the first trial involving humans to be approved in the U.S. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania want to use CRISPR on immune system cells from approximately 18 people with cancer to ultimately help improve treatment. The first trial will test whether CRISPR is safe to use in people. The plan is for researchers to remove immune cells from people with melanoma, sarcoma or myeloma and edit them with CRISPR; the cells will then be put back into the men and women to see how they react. The trial—which still needs to get approval from the medical organizations that will conduct it—will be funded by a cancer organization founded by former Facebook president Sean Parker. According to the medical news site STAT, the trial is planned to take place at the University of Pennsylvania, MD Anderson Cancer Center and the University of California, San Francisco.

fear paralyzed me and I sometimes still harbor some fear deep down. Anyone that knows me knows that the path of life that I chose wasn’t always the best. I can say with certainty though, it was a path that changed me forever. It gave me two options: believe in myself or believe the lies I told myself or the lies others led me to believe about myself. I chose to believe in myself. It required more of me than I knew. I decided to pray and ask God “is this all I am capable of ?” Of course you know His answer and everything changed. I begin to challenge myself on a daily basis leaving all fear behind. Today I have accomplished more than I ever would have imagined for myself with the list still growing. tens of thousands of men and women visiting the clinic for a check-up. These adults, after completing extensive medical and fitness examinations, have filled out questionnaires about their exercise habits, including whether, how often and how speedily they ran. From this database, the researchers chose the records of 55,137 healthy men and women ages 18 to 100 who had visited the clinic at least 15 years before the start of the study. Of this group, 24 percent identified themselves as runners, although their typical mileage and pace varied widely. The researchers then checked death records for these adults. In the intervening 15 or so years, almost 3,500 had died, many from heart disease. But the runners were much less susceptible than the nonrunners. The runners’ risk of dying from any cause was 30 percent lower than that for the nonrunners, and their risk of dying from heart disease was 45 percent lower than for nonrunners, even when the researchers adjusted for being overweight or for smoking (although not many of the runners smoked). And even overweight smokers who ran were less likely to die prematurely than people who did not run, whatever their weight or smoking habits. As a group, runners gained about three extra years of life compared with those adults who never ran. Remarkably, these benefits were about the same no matter how much or little people ran. Those who hit the paths for 150 minutes or more a week, or who were particularly speedy, clipping off six-minute miles or better, lived longer than those who didn’t run. But they didn’t live significantly longer those who ran the least, including people running as little as five or 10 minutes a day at a leisurely pace of 10 minutes a mile or slower. “We think this is really encouraging news,” said Timothy Church, a professor at the Pennington Institute who holds the John S. McIlHenny Endowed Chair in Health Wisdom and co-authored the study. “We’re not talking about training for a marathon,” he said, or even for a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race. “Most people can fit in five minutes a day of running,” he said, “no matter how busy they are, and the benefits in terms of mortality are remarkable.” But “there’s not necessarily something magical about running, per se,” Dr. Church said. Instead, it’s likely that exercise intensity is the key to improving longevity, he said, adding, “Running just happens to be the most convenient way for most people to exercise intensely.”

So what’s so SUPER about Brussel Sprouts?

Brussel Sprouts Mini heads of cabbage? Not really, but a close relative. Brussels sprouts are low in sodium and cholesterol free. They are a good source of fiber. These cruciferous vegetables have phytochemicals (plant compounds that have protective benefits) in them. Brussels sprouts valuable nutrients are, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, manganese, vitamin B6, dietary fiber, choline, copper, vitamin B1, potassium, phosphorus, and omega-3 fatty acids. Purchase sprouts that are about an inch thick, bright green, and firm—and skip those that are yellow, squishy, or wilted. If stored in the refrigerator, your sprouts will last a couple of weeks. When you’re ready to eat, remove the first few leaves, wash them in cold water to remove any residue or dirt
before cooking. There are so many ways to prepare Brussel sprouts. Boiled Brussel sprouts like your mom used to make are boring. There are tastier ways to enjoy these little gems. Roasting sprouts with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, provides a great alternative. Roasting and adding fat in the form of olive oil will help cut through the vegetable’s bitterness. Brussels sprouts sliced thin and placed in salads to replace lettuce to create a nutrient-packed salad. To make your own powerhouse salad, chop your raw sprouts into thin strips, then toss them with pomegranate seeds, shaved fennel, toasted pine nuts, crumbled feta cheese, and a vinaigrette dressing made of lemon juice, Dijon mustard, olive oil, and herbs like parsley.

Over a year ago, the idea of selling meals to help all people, not just those who wanted to diet or prep for a fitness program, was born at North Cypress Fitness. Chef Wayne Cooper began the program preparing about 400 meals a week, but soon the idea caught on. Chef Wayne is now preparing over 2,000 meals a week, and the demand is growing! In fact, Core Meals is predicting that this time next year, they’ll be preparing over 4,000 meals a week. North Cypress has the kitchen space; they have the staff, and they have the vision to see that this is the future of the food industry! Core Meals has exploded this past year because of two main reasons. The first is Chef Wayne Cooper and his staff. Cooper is a local, award-winning chef who has become a legend in local culinary circles. You can find him one day cooking to feed the entire Southeastern football team and the next cooking to feed the congregation of his church. The man loves to cook!! And it shows in every bite. His recipes are unique and so savory. It’s hard for him to admit to
a favorite dish, but the most popular ones are the Chicken Lasagne, the Hawaiian Maui, the Sautéed Pork Tenderloin, the Coconut Shrimp, and the Shrimp and Grits. The second reason Core Meals is growing so rapidly is the ingredients. Chef Wayne insists that fresh, local, seasonal ingredients go into his dishes. If you order your Core Meals to be delivered on a Monday, there’s a pretty good chance that those vegetables are still in the ground on Friday. That’s fresh! This is what sets Core Meals apart from any other prepackaged meals. The menus will change week to week because vegetables are seasonal. Many of the ingredients come from Covey Rise in Husser, Louisiana, and their reputation for excellence is well known. Core Meals co-owner Dion Grossnickle says, “Besides learning about portion control and healthy foods, Core Meals allow people to be introduced to foods that they might not normally buy at the grocery store.” None of these meals are frozen or have added preservatives; they are freshly prepared and can last about seven days in your refrigerator.

Let’s be honest... if you’re not much of a cook and you’re short on time, healthy eating can become boring after a while. Who has time to plan, shop, and prep a complete nutritious meal these days? Core Meals takes the guesswork out of healthy eating. Here’s how it works: Go online to BuyCor eMeals.com, select the 6-meal option for $45 or the 12-meal option for $80. You can also select FlexCore meals which are upgrades such as tuna, salmon, or steak for only $3 per meal. There are no contracts. You can order every week for as long as you like, and quit whenever you feel ready to prepare your own healthy meals. The only thing is that you must order before 9 am on Friday, so Chef Wayne and his crew can work all weekend to prepare those meals for you. Pick up at North Cypress Fitness in Hammond begins at 4 pm on Sunday evenings and all day on Mondays. There is a delivery option to Slidell, Mandeville, and Covington. Starting in August, Core Meals will be delivering to Kenner, Metairie, and New Orleans.
Core Meals are prepared for everyone, but they can also be a part of a sensible dietary plan. Men and women who eat two Core Meals a day as well as their own breakfast, have lost as much as 20 to 30 pounds within four weeks! This is not intended for massive or rapid weight loss. Instead, Core Meals can teach a person how to eat, what’s healthy, and good portion control. The calorie count, fats, carbs, and proteins are right on the label. And every container is dishwasher safe and totally reusable. It takes about four weeks for your body to learn to eat right and to portion correctly.. The best compliment is for people to see Core Meals as a starting point to be able to learn to prepare their meals for themselves. A poor diet can contribute to so many health issues such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol, and whether your goal is to restrict your diet because of a medical condition, lose weight, or just maintain a healthy lifestyle, Core Meals can help you achieve your goals. There aren’t any excuses... Core Meals takes all the guesswork out of eating healthy!
