HAPPINESS

One recent study found that people were happiest in youth and then again in their 70s and ear ly 80s. They were least happy during middle age. A similar study out of the Univer sity of Chicago found that levels of happiness climbed between the ages of 65 and 85 -- and beyond. Why? Some exper ts believe it is because older people are able to tap into the toolbox of social and emotional

SLEEP APNEA

Although snoring may be harmless for most people, it can be a symptom of a life threatening sleep disorder called sleep apnea, especially if it is accompanied by severe daytime sleepiness. Sleep apnea is characterized by pauses in breathing that prevent air from flowing into

or out of a sleeping person’s airways. People with sleep apnea awaken frequently during the night gasping for breath. The breathing pauses reduce blood oxygen levels, can strain the heart and cardiovascular system, and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Snoring on

But little Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher's true child of misery, frail and unhappy. As other children played at recess, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else, just an empty hand. His abstract image captured the imagination of his peers. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer. Another suggested a police officer because the police protect and care for people. Still, others guessed it was the hand of God, for God feeds us. And so the discussion went -- until the teacher almost forgot the young artist himself.

When the children had gone on to other assignments, she paused at Douglas' desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and murmured, "It's yours, teacher." She recalled the times she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, as she had the other students. How often had she said, "Take my hand, Douglas, we'll go outside." Or, "Let me show you how to hold your pencil." Or, "Let's do this together." Douglas was most thankful for his teacher's hand. Brushing aside a tear, she went on with her work. The story speaks of more than thankfulness. It says something about teachers teaching and parents parenting and friends showing friendship, and how much it means to the Douglases of the world.

Four Keys To Success In Kids Sports While there are vast differences in many training programs, there are also common elements to the basics of training for the major sports. While each sport has features and skills unique unto itself, there are a few things that can assist practically every athlete.

Strength is not just a function of the muscles, it also means conditioning the messenger systems within the body to perform more efficiently, as well as strengthening the skeleton and connective tissues. A good strength training program is essential for not only improving athletic performance, but for preventing injuries. Staying healthy is even more AM important than getting stronger, because athletes

who are injured miss training time and do not perform as well on game day.

AGILITY General agility is usually expressed as quickness, such as the ability to suddenly shift direction. This ability can be trained througha variety of methods, from running around cones or set patterns, to various footwork drills performed by running intricate patterns on a cloth ladder on the ground. Agility is also sport-specific; how quickly an athlete executes the demands of his sport is more important than how quickly he can run around orange cones, so the key is not the drill, but making the drill applicable.

CONDITIONING Conditioning covers both general endurance and sportspecific tolerance for training volume. It makes little sense to have offensive and defensive linemen running a half-marathon under the mistaken impression that this will enable them to play longer, when all it will do is limit their ability to train because they are exhausted from running unnecessarily. Conditioning needs to be specific. If an athlete performs in 30 second bursts followed by 30 seconds of inactivity, then some general conditioning will help, but interval training mimicking the demands of play is more appropriate.

EXPLOSIVENESS How explosive an athlete is differs from agility. Agility is a change in pattern or direction while moving; explosiveness is a sudden change in the rate of movement, whether from a stop or a sudden increase in pace. Any sport requiring foot speed highly prizes this quality, and it is one of the most difficult to train. robHOWELL Training often involves specialized lifts, plyometric drills, and sport-specific conditioning. This area requires the most hands-on coaching, because often it is unique to the individual.

This is a great alternative pancake for people who can’t have wheat and gluten. It is also high in protein so it will keep you satisfied longer then regular pancakes. If you have an issue with nuts you can omit them and make them just banana pancakes. I like to use walnuts because they are high in omega 3 fatty acids but any nuts will work. I use honey as my sweetener but agave works well too.

To Make: In a medium mixing bowl mash bananas with a stiff whisk and then add the rest of the ingredients except the water. Add the water slowly until the batter is slightly thick. Then place the batter on a hot griddle or large pan sprayed with coconut oil or another nonstick spray of your choice. Cook until golden brown and enjoy! Top with fresh fruit or warm fruit compote.

Stevia is a unique plant native to the areas near the rain forests of northeastern Paraguay. Stevia contains glycosides which are compounds within the leaves that give them their sweet taste. Glycosides are neither absorbed nor assimilated therefore there is no insulin response rendering stevia a zero on the glycemic index. In contrast, Splenda has a glycemic index of 80, sugar has a glycemic index of 70, meaning Splenda spikes insulin levels more than sugar does! Stevia is safe for both diabetics and hypoglycemics and is a remarkable sweetener for any beverage. Stevia is also excellent for both cooking and baking. When preparing holiday dishes limit the amount of sugar being used and substitute with Xylitol and Stevia instead. Xylitol and Stevia can both be found in local health food and vitamin stores. milk protein, is a slow digesting protein that is ideally used in the evening as a night time protein powder. The average person sleeps for about six to eight hours each night, and if protein is not available during this period, the body will start breaking down muscle tissue to use as a protein source, which can lead to catabolism and loss of lean muscle mass which results in an increase in body fat percentage. A slower digesting protein, such as casein, can help prevent this from occurring. Whey protein is without a doubt the most popular form of protein being used in protein powders today. Whey protein is digested quickly, tastes great, and helps repair muscle tissue after exercise. Whey protein increases lean muscle mass, which ultimately lowers overall body fat percentage. Whey protein powder will help keep the sensation of being full to avoid over consumption of calories and to curb appetite. There are two kinds of whey protein

powders available, whey protein concentrate, and whey protein isolate. Studies have shown that 100% whey protein isolate has a much higher absorption rate than whey protein concentrate, so be sure and read the ingredients label on the back of the bottle when choosing the correct protein powder to be certain that it is 100% whey protein isolate and not a mixture of whey protein concentrate and isolate, which cheaper brands try to pass as whey protein isolate, by advertising whey protein isolate in bold all over the front of the bottle’s label. Also, which sweetener is used in the protein powder can directly affect your health. The all natural sweetener, Stevia, which is derived from the Stevia plant, has been gaining popularity with diabetics as of late due to the fact that it has a much lower glycemic index than sucralose (splenda) or aspartame, and has no effect on blood glucose levels, which will help keep blood sugar levels balanced. A 100% whey protein

read nutrition labels carefully to avoid ingesting isolate powder, that contains zero fat, zero sugar, harmful chemicals like Sucralose and Apsartame, and zero cholesterol, and that is sweetened with stevia remember portion control is vital during the holidays. is currently the best choice for losing weight and With careful planning and preparation, one can truly leading a healthy lifestyle. have their cake and eat it too!

The Truth Behind Ingredients by travisMANNY

With the unfortunate prevalence of food technology, more and more mystery ingredients are popping up in our everyday munchies. Foods that were once simplistic in nature are now loaded with stuff we can’t even pronounce. Almond milk, for example, can be made with three ingredients: almonds, water, and salt. Take a look at your store-bought nut milk and find other mystery items such as soy lecithin, carrageenan, gellan gum and plenty others. On the other hand, there are some hard-topronounce ingredients that are completely harmless. Let’s navigate the world of mystery ingredients and find out what’s safe! 1.

Citric Acid

At first sight on a food label, you are probably thinking this means orange, lemon or lime juice. However, citric acid is actually made by fermenting glucose. It’s used to add flavor to foods as well as to increase shelf life.

MF's Advice: Citric acid can cause damage to the mucosal membrane of the stomach. It’s a hard ingredient to avoid, but you should try whenever possible. 2.

Soy Lecithin

Soy is one of the most prevalent and heavily genetically modified organisms available for consumption. Soy lecithin is made by extracting the oil from a raw soybean using a chemical solvent, mixed with water and then bleached using hydrogen peroxide.

MF's Advice: Avoid all Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs) when possible. Due to the role soy plays in hormone imbalance, avoiding soy is especially important for women.

3.

Potassium Bromate

Bromide is created through a series of chemical reactions and then added to foods containing flour. It is especially dangerous because it disrupts your endocrine system.

MF's Advice: Many studies have suggested that potassium bromate may be a contributing factor to thyroid problems, kidney, and nervous tissue damage, as well as being a potential carcinogen. Any food containing potassium bromate should be avoided completely. 4.

Sodium Nitrate

Made in a laboratory, this synthetic additive is used as a colorant and preservative in processed meats such as hot dogs, sausage and bacon.

MF's Advice: Consuming too much sodium nitrate in your diet

can be dangerous. It can form nitrosamines which may lead to many forms of cancer.

5.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

You can find HFCS in everything from baked goods, canned fruits, dairy products and countless sweetened drinks. You will hear diabetes most commonly mentioned with HFCS, but it will wreak havoc on every organ system in your body.

MF's Advice: Consuming HFCS in any amount is dangerous! Make sure to read all of your food labels (especially condiments) to carefully to avoid this. 6.

Acacia Gum

This food additive comes from the sap of acacia trees. It’s used as an emulsifier to help bind foods together and make them more stable. It may not

sound like it, but it’s also a natural source of soluble fiber. Despite being commonly found in foods that you should avoid such as candies, processed baked goods and sodas, it’s actually not terrible for you. MF's Advice: It’s ok to be consumed in moderation. Some studies have actually suggested that Acacia Gum is a prebiotic and good source of soluble fiber.

7.

Maltodextrin

This artificial sugar is created from corn and wheat. The production process typically removes the protein from the wheat, so be careful. This can sneak into products that are labeled “gluten free.”

MF's Advice: Regular maltodextrin has a high glycemic index rating so this should be consumed in very small amounts. It should be completely avoided

Additives are everywhere and you can run but you can’t hide. The only way to avoid these frankenfoods is to eat whole, fresh foods in their natural form. As for additives and everything else in life, moderation is key.

Guar Gum

While this ingredient doesn’t sound appetizing or healthy for you, it’s actually derived from the guar bean that is grown in the Middle East. It’s considered to be a decent source of soluble fiber. Guar gum is better than Xanthan Gum because it doesn’t come from corn.

MF's Advice: Whenever you are buying something with guar gum on the label, make sure it’s certified organic because these beans tend to be highly sprayed. Other than that, it’s a clean additive. 9.

Aspartic Acid

At first glance, this ingredient might sound harmful. However, aspartic acid is actually an amino acid that can help give your cells the energy they need. It also aids in other bodily functions like glucose synthesis and hormone regulation.

10.

MSG

There are over 40 forms of this nasty additive out there and it can be hidden on ingredient labels through different names like maltodextrin, autolyzed yeast and monosodium glutamine (just to name a few). MSG is considered to be a neurotoxin because of the harmful effect it has on your nerve cells.

MF's Advice: MSG has been considered to be worse for your health than alcohol and nicotine. I recommend always avoiding this.

MF's Advice: Your cells already produce Aspartic Acid so you don’t need to worry about adding it into your diet. If you see this on a food label, don’t worry!

When “Not Tonight” is Every Night There is Help

ARTICLE BY: Dr. Katherine Williams, MD, FACOG, IF and Becky Rolland

When should a frequent ‘not-in-the-mood’ become a concern? Are you fatigued, or could there be something else going on? If ‘not tonight’ is every night, it might be time to seek medical attention. A large percentage of adult women are plagued with a low sex drive (having a low libido or loss of interest in sex), from their pre-childbearing to the post-menopausal years. Although losing some interest in sex can be part of the normal ebb and flow of life, when a low sex drive starts to negatively affect a relationship, a woman should find out why. According to a 2008 study in the Obstetrics & Gynecology Journal, only 20% of women with sexual problems will seek medical help. Many women are too embarrassed or hesitant to talk to their doctor or healthcare provider about sexual problems because they think they won’t be taken seriously or that there isn’t anything that can be done to help. 14 ∙

Understanding Female Sexual Dysfunctions There are four main types of sexual dysfunction that can have an impact on a woman’s sex drive:

• Decreased sexual desire is low libido, reduced sex-

ual interest, lack of a craving for sexual sensations, or a struggle with ‘getting in the mood. • Diminished sexual arousal is a decreased physical, emotional, or mental reaction to sexual stimulation during foreplay or sex even if the initial desire for sex is present. • Orgasmic problems are the inability for a woman to reach orgasm, or the recent inability for a woman who pre-

viously achieved orgasm to reach climax of the sexual response. • Finally dyspareunia is pain during sex that can be due to gynecological, emotional and physical abnormalities. Sex should never be painful. Any pain during sex should receive immediate medical attention by a specialist. Decreased sexual desire, the most common of the four, primarily affects women in their 40s, although it can affect women of all ages. It is natural, as women age, for them to experience a decrease in sexual desire, but if there is dissatisfaction, there is help available.

What causes low sex drive in women? A women’s sexual desire is far more complicated than a man’s libido. A man can take a little blue pill to remedy his most common sexual complaint and be ready to go, however, the female sex drive is far more complex. There are a range of psychological and physiological factors that may negatively impact a woman’s libido:

• Psychological (mental or emotional) triggers can be job stress, relationship problems, depression or anxiety, negative body image, past sexual trauma, an unwillingness to be sexual, or sociocultural influences like media images or peer pressure. • Physical impairments can include hormone imbalances such as low testosterone, age, menstrual cycle, menopause, demands of a caregiver or mother, or post-partum pregnancy changes.

• Medical conditions that affect libido include anemia, chemotherapy, depression, anxiety, prolactin tumors, fibroids, endometriosis, thyroid disease, and even some vitamin deficiencies. • Medications that can decrease sex drive include antidepressants, anxiety medicine, narcotics, some blood pressure drugs, or even some birth control pills.

Proper Diagnosis and Treatment If someone needs help with a low libido, low sex drive, pain with sex, or other sexual dysfunction, encourage them to consult with a medical doctor who specializes in women’s sexual health. Before the physiological component of a low libido can properly be diagnosed, it is critical that the doctor take the time to thoroughly evaluate the psychological and physiological components of the patient’s life. Only then can the condition be effectively treated. There is no longer any reason to suffer in silence. SIWSH Helps Women Achieve the Intimacy They Deserve A visit to the Southern Institute for Women’s Sexual Health (SIWSH), will take longer than a normal gynecologist appointment and that is by design. Dr. Katherine Williams, an expert at diagnosing and treating vulvar and pelvic discomfort, created SIWSH to help women who may have been suffering silently for years. “Patients who suffer from pelvic and vulvar pain or dysfunction need additional time, attention, and tests to determine the best course of treatment,” Dr. Williams explained. “We first need a comprehensive history and evaluation before we can fully understand our patients. This cannot be done in a simple office visit. We take our time with each patient so that we can help women achieve the intimacy they deserve.”

Offering two locations, Covington and New Orleans, SIWSH provides women of all ages with a comprehensive diagnosis and effective treatment of pelvic and vulvar pain. “Complaints regarding sexual function are one of the most common concerns heard by gynecologists, however they are often the last thing mentioned by patients. We wanted to create a space where patients feel comfortable discussing their problems and help empower them to achieve pain-free intimacy”, Dr. Williams added. With over 20 years of experience treating women of all ages, Dr. Williams knows the best way to treat her patients is to understand them first. Before she physically examines her patients to make a preliminary diagnosis, she allows her patients to tell their story and ver-

balize their problems. Prior to their next visit, each patient is asked to complete a 140-part questionnaire. An expert in accurately diagnosing and effectively treating sexual pain disorders, disorders of the skin around the vulva, and sexual side effects experienced after chemotherapy, menopause, childbirth and contraceptives, Dr. Williams will always meet with patients first. After the initial consult, Dr. Williams works with hematologist/oncologist, Dr. Jay Saux III, Kelly Brewster, WHNP, and Michelle Sierra, to treat women with chronic pain who have lost hope. “One of the most rewarding aspects of our work is to help patients to feel alive again, to regain the intimacy they deserve, and to restore their quality of life,” Dr. Williams said.

Dr. Katherine Williams, MD, FACOG, IF For over 20 years Dr. Katherine Williams has been an empowering advocate for women and their health in her field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Born in Baton Rouge and raised in New Orleans, she earned her Bachelor’s in psychology from the University in New Orleans and her medical doctorate from LSU Medical School in New Orleans. Following Dr. Williams’ residency at Charity Hospital in Obstetrics and Gynecology, she attended a fellowship with the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH) in New York. A pillar of her local community, she has been involved with the St. Tammany Parish Hospital Board of Commissioners and served as the Chairman of the Louisiana Medical Disclosure Panel. In 2011, she became the first female chief of staff at St. Tammany Parish Hospital and continues to be trained in the latest technology and devices that benefit her patients. It is Dr. Williams’ work with breast cancer survivors and sexual abuse victims that motivated her to seek more education in sexual health to best help these patients that are often plagued with sexual dysfunction and more importantly, deserve to live life to the fullest. Board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology, she is the founder of the Southern Institute for Women’s Sexual Health and the Center for Women’s Health, a gynecological practice with a focus on women’s sexual health. In 2009, Dr. Williams became a da Vinci certified Robotic Surgeon and now trains other doctors. In 2014, she joined the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH), to further her knowledge of vulvovaginal disorders and sexual pain and in 2015, she became a fellow of this organization.

DIABETES TAKE CONTROL First, the good news: Over the last few years, the number of new cases of diabetes in the United States has shown a modest decline. People with diabetes are living longer because of improvements in managing the disease. One of the key reasons that people with diabetes are living longer is that there has been a steady decline in the death rate due to cardiovascular disease. Improvements have also been seen in the tools and medications that people with diabetes can use to manage the disease. Now, the bad news: There are still 1.4 million new cases of diabetes diagnosed every year, and even though we now have better ways to manage diabetes, the financial burden of doing so has increased.

DIABETES BY THE NUMBERS

TYPE 1:

Less common than type 2, about 5 percent of people with diabetes have type 1. Type 1 diabetes was previously known as “juvenile diabetes” because it’s most often diagnosed in children and young adults. In simple terms, the food you consume is broken down into glucose, which provides the energy your body needs to function properly. The body uses insulin to burn that glucose. When someone has type 1, his or her body does not produce insulin.

How it’s treated: Insulin therapy is necessary. Additional medication/treatments may also be used.

TYPE 2:

Most common form of diabetes. When someone has type 2, their body makes insulin but might not make enough and does not use it properly. When the disease first starts, the pancreas produces extra insulin but eventually can’t make enough to maintain normal levels of blood glucose. Glucose then builds up in the blood, where it causes a host of problems rather than going into the cells and providing energy. Type 2 diabetes is generally progressive, with the body’s ability to produce its own insulin declining over time.

How it’s treated: Lifestyle changes

(diet and exercise). Medication and/or insulin may also be necessary if lifestyle changes aren’t adequate to regulate blood glucose levels. There is no cure, so it’s all about management.

Lower Your Risk Take proactive steps to reduce your risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Lose the weight. Maintaining an appropriate body weight range is the No. 1 thing you can do to avoid diabetes. About 85 percent of people who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese. Talk to your doctor about developing a realistic plan to lose weight.

Eat healthy. It’s about

making smart food choices, not starving yourself. For example, the largest portion of your meal should be non-starchy vegetables. Cut back on starchy veggies (corn, potatoes, etc) and include lean protein and small amounts of healthy fats.

Don’t smoke. This seems like a no-brainer, but there are still people

Reason For Concern

Having diabetes puts you at risk for a number of health problems, including: Cardiovascular disease: Adults diagnosed with diabetes are nearly twice as likely to be hospitalized with a heart attack or stroke. Two out of three people with diabetes have high blood pressure, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Eye damage: Diabetes can lead to a number of vision problems, including glaucoma, cataracts and disorders of the retina, including macular edema. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. Kidney disease: Diabetes can damage the kidneys, causing them to work harder and, in some cases, to eventually fail altogether, requiring dialysis. Neuropathy: Nearly half of all people with diabetes have some form of nerve damage, which, in serious cases, can lead to amputation.

who think they can do other things to improve their health without giving up cigarettes. Don’t kid yourself. Smoking raises your blood pressure and your bad cholesterol, damages your lungs and reduces the amount of oxygen needed by your organs to function normally. Because people with diabetes are already at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, smoking is especially bad for them.

Get moving. Regular exercise improves blood flow and helps lower

blood glucose. Research has shown that light activity spread throughout the day is more beneficial for lipid and glucose metabolism than working out intensely for an hour or two. This is good news for people who physically aren’t able to exercise vigorously, and it pretty much cancels out any excuse you might come up with for not exercising. Look for ways to incorporate more physical movement into each day. Even the smallest activities start adding up.

Watch what you’re drinking. Many people consume hundreds of calories a day in beverages alone.

Schedule a diabetes screening test if you have any of the following risk factors. • African-American, Hispanic, American Indian, Asian-American, Pacific Islander

• Family history of type 2 diabetes

• 45 or older

• Gave birth to a baby weighing nine pounds or more

• High blood pressure • HDL cholesterol below 35 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) or triglyceride level over 250 mg/dl • Sedentary lifestyle

• Had gestational diabetes when pregnant • Have polycystic ovary syndrome (You can also go to diabetes.org/risktest for an online risk assessment.)

• Overweight (body mass index over 25)

Haven’t we all seen the quote that says, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift - that’s why it’s called the present.” It’s absolutely true - this moment is the only one we have. They say time is money - but I say time is more valuable than money. You can make more money, but you can’t make more time. Once you spend it, it’s gone forever. How can we make sure we’re living a fulfilling life in each moment? Here are some ideas to help you have a positive attitude about your time.
