Barack Hussein Obama was officially sworn in as the 44th president of the United States of America yesterday, declaring the nation must choose “hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord” to overcome the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Before a jubilant crowd, the first African-American to hold the land’s highest office warned of the tough “road that unfolds before us,” but assured the country that its challenges “will be met.”

Obama, 47, took one of his plainest swipes yet at outgoing President George W. Bush: “Our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed,” Obama said.

“Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin the work of remaking America. The mention of Bush’s name before the ceremony elicited a chorus of boos.

But little could disturb the carnival atmosphere.

Oops! Roberts bobbles Obama’s oath of office But two get through it and officially swear in America’s 44th president

“Are you prepared to take the oath, senator?” Roberts asked Obama, who had his hand on the Bible that Abraham Lincoln used the day he became president in 1861.

A spokeswoman at the Washington Hospital Center said the Massachusetts Democrat was awake and answering questions when he arrived and was able to receive a phone call from Obama.

A few hours later, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., visited Kennedy, 76, whom he said had suffered “a mild seizure similar to what he’s had before. It’s part of the battle he’s fighting” since he was diagnosed with brain cancer and had surgery last year.

Kerry said Kennedy would remain overnight at the hospital. “He’s laughing and joking right now.

He’s got all his Irish dander up,” he added.

Kennedy is expected to be released from hospital this morning.

Welcome, at last, to America

ou could see it on the thousands of black faces in the crowd at Barack Obama’s inauguration yesterday: The Dream is realized.

I wish with all of my heart that I could have more of a personal connection and understanding of what this must have felt like for them. It must have been amazing. It was for me, too, in my own way.

veryone’s eyes were fixed on the big screens in the audience as Obama took the oath of office. But my eyes were on someone else who caught my attention. A single tear ran down the cheek of a young girl, perhaps in

We’re obviously not getting anywhere on the train. Time for Plan B. We bail and walk the mile to the Capitol. Looks like everyone else had the same idea. On 18th Street, it’s like a sea of people spilled onto the road. Cops block off traffic as people fill the street from one sidewalk to the other.

Two dozen people watched from Lorena’s Food & Spirits in Dawsonville, Ga. It’s deep in McCain Country and, depending on who you believe, an upmarket eatery — or a foul-mouthed biker bar. “Normal crowd for lunch,” said a woman who answered the phone.

Any cheering? “There’s none of that here,” snapped the woman, who declined to give her name.

“They think he’s walking into a hornet’s nest and he can’t do everything he says he’s going to,” she said.

Washington, D.C. is obviously the place to be today as the town revels in a stream of inauguration festivities. And so we all wait with bated breath to see what the Barack Obama era will mean for our economy, the war and fashion.

Yes, I said it, fashion.

A New York Times article has already called Michelle “fashion’s one-woman bailout.” Could the expectations of her be any higher? Rather than take the

fashion risk she did with her love-it-or-hate-it, red and black Narciso Rodriguez dress on election night, she opted for a decidedly American chic and modern route, which works really well for her, for inaugural week.

She began the festivities in a Zero by Maria Cornejo suit for the Whistle Stop train tour into D.C. and continued the week in a Narciso Rodriguez camel and black suit for the inaugural “We Are One” concert. Her choice for the big day? A strong, yet feminine yellow ensemble by fashion insider favorite, Isabel Toledo, an esoteric design-

“We’re used to seeing women in the White House choosing Oscar de la Renta — very safe names, very safe choices. Michelle is adventurous and taking chances. It’s a totally refreshing change for the White House,” says Constance White, eBay’s style director.

The NYPD is on the lookout for a welldressed sexual predator who’s attacked two young girls in Manhattan. Police say the man, dressed in a suit and tie, attacked a 15year-old girl in Chelsea last week and a 12-year-old girl in Tribeca in November. Gov says Cuomo on list NEW YORK. Gov. David Paterson said for the first time yesterday that he is considering Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for appointment to the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Clinton. Cuomo has been considered a contender for

illions of people descended upon the mall in Washington yesterday, and hundreds of millions more gathered in front of televisions to watch one of the most significant moments in American history.

Barack Hussein Obama, a black man, became the 44th president of the United States of America. As significant as this moment was for its own sake, it also speaks to a bigger moment in American life: Our country is not only growing old, it just might be growing up.

As President Obama mentioned in his inaugural address, it was only a few decades ago that the idea of a black president was not only unlikely, but laughable. Today, our children will be born into a world where the image of a black president is not only realistic, but immediate.

n order to fully appreciate yesterday’s events, we must take full account of our nation’s deep and often dark history. The historic transfer of power that took place was merely cosigned with a pen’s ink. More importantly, it was written in the blood of legions of nameless and faceless freedom fighters who gave their lives to bring forth a world that they would never see. To ignore the significance of

till, as we celebrate this watershed moment. It is important that we not become too self-satisfied, too pleased with our collective maturity. Indeed, it is one thing for a nation to finally accept that a black man can represent its interests. It is another thing entirely to

question the nature of those interests. The working poor will be no happier to know that a black man is undermining their prosperity.

Gays and lesbians will see no moral victory in having their civil rights stripped away by fellow minority.

Continental Africans will find no solace in the fact that one of their sons is aiding and abetting its exploitation. For America to truly mature, we must not

only acknowledge its bright light, we must also come to terms with its dark underside. Militarism, violence, consumerism, homophobia, patriarchy, anti-intellectualism, and countless other hallmarks of the American empire must die in order for a new, more mature America to be born. Otherwise, we have done nothing more than put a slave in charge of the plantation.

O

f course, the responsibility of seizing this moment does not start and end with President Obama. As Rev. Jesse Jackson aptly stated, the inauguration was merely the wedding; the marriage begins today. To keep this marriage healthy, we must commit ourselves to its continued growth and

development. This means pushing Obama to become the leader that he can be by being the citizens that we must be. This requires being just as critical of our new president as we were with his predecessor. This demands that we not retreat to the political sidelines until the next presidential election. To do so would be to squander one of the greatest opportunities that our nation has ever had. While I am not optimistic, I remain a prisoner of hope. Not in President Obama. But in our collective ability to not only grow old, but grow up.

who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and nonbelievers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society’s ills on the West — know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.

My fellow citizens: I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land — a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.

As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves.

And yet, at this moment — a moment that will define a generation — it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.

For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter’s courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent’s willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends — hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism — these things are old.

These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility — a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.

This is the price and the promise of citizenship.

This is the source of our confidence — the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted — for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame.

Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things — some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.

For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.

For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done.

The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.

We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology’s wonders to raise health care’s quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age.

All this we can do. And all this we will do.

Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions — who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short.

For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when

imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them — that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works — whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public’s dollars will be held to account — to spend wisely, reform bad habits and do our business in the light of day — because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control — and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our gross domestic product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart — not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our found-

ing fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience’s sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: Know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions.

They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort — even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those

No, I would never bestow that title on myself. But I’m bummed to be leaving early this year, especially because the weather is so amazing. It’s so much warmer than in New York. When I stepped off the plane I was like, “It’s summer vacation.”

I know, me too. The week before I came

here I was patrolling vintage stores for the biggest, wooliest sweater I could find and I bought three. I haven’t worn any of them.

Oh God, yes. What happened with “Pineapple Express” was nothing. It was completely taken out of context. We’re working together right now on his animated series. The “Pineapple” thing was all bulls—t. I’m a huge

verywhere I went in Park City last year, people were flabbergasted that I had no interest in skiing. Folks who know me are well aware of my contempt for physical activity. But strangers â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the father and son from Boston at my hotel, the female ad exec from L.A. on the bus, Colin Farrell â&#x20AC;&#x201D; urged me to find time in my busy schedule watching movies made by NYU grads and avoiding Paris Hilton to hit the slopes.

I ignored them.

But this year, I decided to go snowboarding. Confident that I would make an ass of myself, but hopeful that all those people in the Oakley goggles that make

them look like a character from â&#x20AC;&#x153;Halo 3â&#x20AC;? were right and I was wrong, I hopped on a ski lift. Big motherf---ing mistake.

Snowboarding is enjoyed by millions, and they are all sadists. Never before have I experienced such pain. After two hours spent lying on my back, I could not lift my arm above my head. My hip felt like Bo Jacksonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

The flesh over my tailbone swelled to the size of a golfball and filled with blood.

Park City is a fine enough place, as long as youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re inside a hotel (or swag suite).

But to the people here who demand itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best enjoyed by watching your feet fly over your head, I say this: Leave me the hell alone.

At the midway point of the season, the Nets appear as lost as an outof-state traveler on the New Jersey Turnpike.

In their 105-85 loss to the Celtics on Saturday, coach Lawrence Frank benched starters Vince Carter and Devin Harris for the entire second half. The move threatens the stability of a fringe playoff team and could spiral it toward the NBA lottery.

“It’s never happened before,” Harris said of the benching.

This past year has been a lot of firsts for Harris,

though. The Nets’ point guard missed the playoffs for the first time in his career last season. And at 1922, the Nets held just a half-game lead for the final playoff spot before last night’s games. Tonight, they embark on a fourgame road trip.

“What you’re looking at is the big picture with the team,” Frank said about the benchings. “There’s no secret that those guys are vital to our success. As a coach, you coach the whole team.”

That “whole team” is playing decidedly average.

D’Antoni’s honeymoon defies New York stereotypes

T

he Knicks are about as close to becoming a playoff force as Dick Cheney is to winning a Nobel Peace Prize.

Mike D’Antoni’s chosen building piece, Danilo Gallinari, is about as close to being the next Dirk Nowitzki as Nate Robinson is to being Baldwin the next Chris Paul.

And only the Knicks could turn Joakim Noah into a Dwight Howard-level rebounder.

Yet, none of this really seems to matter. Not to the crowds who still pay Garden prices in these times. Certainly not to TV announcers such as Mike Breen who already harbors a huge man crush on Gallinari (coupled with the one he’s held on D’Antoni for months).

This has little to do with the Knicks’ win over Chicago on Monday. Everyone dismisses worry over actual game results in favor of focusing on a nebulous, mystical future.

D’Antoni’s greatest feat is no longer making the NBA watchable again as coach of the Suns or turning Steve Nash into a two-time MVP. No, those pale next to disproving the long-held fallacy that New York fans will not stand for rebuilding.

Heck, they’re fine with a plan that seems even less thought out than a government bailout.

Veteran HGTV designer Genevieve Gorder already knows what you might be thinking about her new room makeover show, “Dear Genevieve.”

“You think, oh, design show, blah, blah, blah,” she says. “[The show is] not just that. It’s very emotional on the male side and on the female side. Design affects everyone.”

Gorder makes a pretty convincing argument, given that her mission in the new show is to address the design problems that have chronically stunted some homeowners, often times illuminating a mental block in the residents. “‘Why did you settle for

this for so long?’ As a designer, I need to ask these questions,” says Gorder.

“That’s where the therapy comes in. I need to find out why you’re fearful of committing. Why you’re fearful of making the wrong decision.”

Branded as a “free spirited designer,” Gorder likes to take this holistic approach when investigating why homeowners are stuck with putrid Barcaloungers or heinous faux pink brick in their kitchens. She insists that solving one’s own home design nightmares does more for the spirit than many people realize.

“I really feel that when your landscape is truly yours, you tend to treat people better and you have a lot more pride in yourself,” Gorder explains. “If you stub your toe religiously on the

Just because your apartment might be as tiny as a pantry, it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cook up some big ideas for spacious living.

Though experts wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t recommend following in the extreme footsteps of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sex and the Cityâ&#x20AC;?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Carrie Bradshaw, who claimed to use her oven for storage, kitchens can easily become multifunctional rooms by exhibiting a little creativity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have to really lose the mindset that the kitchen is only for dishes,â&#x20AC;? says Nancy Heller, professional organizer and owner of Goodbye Clutter Inc. Heller knows firsthand that items arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t restricted to their traditional rooms.

Even freezers can be used for storing angora sweaters, which will remain safe from moths and preserved in the cold.

Heller advises using common sense when storing items in the kitchen.

For instance, combustibles should never be placed in the oven.

Still, she says the best way to maximize living space is to get rid of clutter.

In addition to paring down, city dwellers can also make use of high ceilings by installing cabinets, says Heller.

Asking James Oseland, editor-in-chief of Saveur magazine, to whittle down his mag’s annual list of 100 products, people and ideas that dramatically altered the food landscape (aka the Saveur 100) is like coaxing

an adoring mother to pick her most beloved child.

“Parents never say they have their favorite children — but they do,” admits Oseland with an amiable laugh. The unabashed epicurean zones in on a handful of items that he deems essential and pivotal in the gastronomosphere this year.

1. Lidia Bastianich Oseland sings sweet praises for this Italian mother hen, a PBS regular best known for her cooking show, “Lidia’s Italy.” The gentle sixtysomething brings a sage-like presence to kitchens across the country, peppering accessible, homemade goodness with vivid travel segments that span the Mediterranean. “She inspires me to walk over to the kitchen,” he gushes. “She’s calm and intimate and a really great force in American cooking.”

Though it’s an unlikely candidate for a DIY project, Oseland embraces the idea of churning out your own ketchup. “It’s satisfying at a primordial level,” he stresses. According to Saveur, Heinz’s 57 varieties can be traced back to 17th century China, where “ke-tsiap,” as it was born, began as a spicy melange of pickled fish and spices. The magazine’s homemade version is a unique combo of tomato puree, jalapenos and cloves, though Oseland admits that the real fun comes in experimenting.

“It can be a mirror of your mood,” he adds.

“It’s 4 or 5 years old, and a knockout,” confesses Oseland, as he describes this Russian supermarket tucked in the vibrant folds of Coney Island. In addition to a wide array of authentic charcuterie and fresh bread, the best thing about this market is its breathtaking array of prepared foods — house-made pickles, traditional salads and borscht, just to name a few mouthwatering delights. “Like a quick trip to Moscow,” Oseland says (1007 Brighton Beach Ave., Brooklyn, 718-769-1700).

If the looming recession is depriving you (and your wallet) of your favorite razzle-dazzle cocktails, why not attempt a bartender’s techniques in house? “Drinking out is great, but we can also make delicious drinks at home,” explains Oseland. His favorite tip includes igniting an orange or lemon peel for an oh-so-brief millisecond — just enough for a burst of flame to impart a luscious, citrus flavor into your favorite gin or whiskey drink.

Lion and Globe peanut oil A far cry from its processed American counterpart (Planters) the Hong Kong version — available at most Chinese grocery stores, according to Oseland -- is less expensive and boasts a majestic, golden hue. It’s signature smokey scent gives the average stir-fry dish a much-needed je ne sais quoi and even works as a base for a vinegarette dressing. “It’s a pantry staple,” says Oseland.
