Halifax regional council did a complete 360 on Tuesday, agreeing in principle to sell the St. Patrick’s-Alexandra school site to a developer. In December, council voted to sell to Jono Developments Ltd., then rescinded that motion Jan. 11 after community outrage. Under HRM’s policy, community groups were supposed to get 90 days to put together a business case before the property was put up for sale, but in reality the community found out about the request for proposals shortly before it closed. But it’s not over yet. In order to officially sell the property, the policy needs to be repealed and that can’t happen until the next council meeting. Letters to HRM obtained by

But Jane Moloney, executive director of the North End Community Health Centre, said Tuesday no decision on legal action has been made. A letter from Jono Developments received by HRM on Monday said if the city doesn’t honour the contract then, "it will leave us with no alternative but to rely upon the legal authorities set by this country." Coun. Jerry Blumenthal, for one, was worried about legal action during Tuesday’s meeting. And several councillors said giving the communities 90 days to come up with a plan would be giving them false hope. More coverage {page 3}
