The mother of Mariam Makhniashvili, whose vexing disappearance nearly three years ago sparked a massive nationwide search, is anxiously awaiting the results of forensic tests after police notified her that human remains were discovered in a Toronto ravine. Lela Tabidze said she received a call from Toronto police Thursday morning regarding remains found near Yonge Street and Highway 401. Tabidze stressed that police divulged little information and made no explicit mention of Mariam, but she was nevertheless rattled by the news. “It was a kind of warning. It could be something, it could be nothing,” she told the Toronto Star, adding that police told her to expect a call next week. Meanwhile, police said that Tabidze was contacted out of courtesy, and that the family had been notified in the past about similar discoveries. They would

not speculate about the gender or age of the remains as they undergo forensic examination. Mariam was last seen wearing black pants, a light blue shirt, a dark blue jean jacket, and a large black, green-striped backpack, which was found less than a month later. Clothing was unearthed along with the remains, Const. Viktor Kwong said.
A Toronto police officer stands watch over a taped-off area on the edge of Toronto’s Don Valley Golf Course near Highway 401 and Yonge Street on Thursday. Human remains were found in the area on Tuesday, prompting police to notify the family of missing girl Mariam Makhniashvili. Const. Wendy Drummond of the Toronto police says finding remains isn’t something that happens often, so they take it very seriously.
