The union for Toronto’s 23,000 inside workers says the city is intent on reducing workers’ hours and thus their pay in this round of bargaining. As the clock ticks down to a March 24 strike deadline, the issue is particularly acute for the 10,000 part-timers who fear they won’t earn enough to make ends meet. That contrasts with the city’s outside workers, who settled on Feb. 5, where the union’s goal was to retain job
security for full-timers. With the inside workers, members of CUPE Local 79, a key concern is getting enough part-time hours. Progress has been slow over the past 12 weeks of bargaining but both sides say they hope a strike deadline announced Thursday will provide the impetus to move forward. The city is targeting not only part-timers but also full-time workers in the 10 long-termcare homes, where management wants to reduce the work week by five hours.
