A dozen job losses at CBC Halifax, while four locally produced programs are getting the plug pulled out from them. All of this news came down Tuesday as more details of how Canada’s public broadcaster would be dealing with a $225-million shortfall were released. “Terrible day. Terrible day,” said Andrew Cochran, managing director, Maritimes, for CBC English Services. One week after learning the CBC in Nova Scotia was losing its network production studio in Halifax and a multimillion-dollar development project planned for Bell Road — all of which will eventually see 14 people be out of work — there was another tough pill to swallow Tuesday. Three job cuts are coming to the Halifax newsroom of

the CBC — one VJ, one reporter and one videographer. The newsroom will also not be filling a vacant managing-editor role, and three people will be out of work in network operations. The other five job losses are a result of the cancellation of four programs all produced in Halifax. They are CBC Radio One’s All The Best and Close To Home, Radio Two’s Connections and TV’s At The Table. “We are the biggest region in the country and it didn’t come as a surprise that we would have to shoulder one of the biggest cuts in the country,” said Cochran, who was happy to see no job losses in Sydney, Charlottetown, Moncton, N.B., and Saint John, N.B. A decision on who will be losing their jobs hasn’t been made, he added. More coverage, page 15
