Job losses worry teachers page 4
Grade 2 teacher Meaghan McGuire of Oxford School teaches her class on Thursday morning, one day after the Halifax Regional School Board announced more than 150 classroom teaching positions were being cut in the 2012-13 school year. The province defended its decision Thursday to cut funding in education, which the Halifax Regional School Board says is the main reason for the job losses. Philip Croucher/metro
As the numbers show, the transit strike did have an impact on ridership. April reports show revenue is down by four per cent in the first full month of transit service since the strike. The six-week strike ended March 13, when the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 508 and Halifax regional council both voted to accept a deal. Customers were given free transit for the rest of March. On Thursday, Metro News learned revenues were down by $111,200 in April compared to the same month last year. This doesn’t include income from Metro Link and MetroX, which wasn’t available. Most of the hit came from conventional transit, which decreased $107,900, while community transit dropped by $7,000. “It’s about exactly what we expected,” said Tiffany Chase, Metro Transit spokeswoman. “We had said during the strike we would anticipate a four per
cent reduction in revenue and that’s exactly where it’s at for the month of April.” Ken Wilson, president of ATU Local 508, said typically transit loses five to 10 per cent ridership after a strike. “So that’s in the ballpark,” he said. But Wilson said the numbers don’t sound right because drivers aren’t reporting any lighter bus loads. Wilson suspects it could be people using February tickets or transfers to ride the bus for an hour and a half. The loss will be absorbed into the budget, but Metro Transit does service adjustments four times a year with one coming this month. “What Metro Transit will do is monitor incoming revenue closely, and there might be other areas where budgets can be adjusted so that we maintain the level of service council agreed to,” Chase said. The numbers weren’t all bad
