Teacher union

Minister aims to avoid labour strife Alberta’s education minister is hoping for labour peace with teachers. Their contract runs out in August and Jeff Johnson says one of his department’s top three priorities is a long-term agreement. Johnson says the province has invited the teachers and the school boards association to the bargaining table for threeway talks. The other two priorities are passing the new Education Act and building more schools. Johnson says the Tories plan to keep their election promise of building 50 new schools and modernizing 70 others over the next four years. The Canadian press Weather

Eddies. Consumers can truly capture the essence of the beer, says brewery marketing director Celeste de Muelenaere calgary@metronews.ca

Ever watch a TV commercial and think, “I could make a better ad than that?” Well Scott Irwin didn’t just think it, he actually did it. For 19 years Big Rock Brewery, and its founder Ed McNally, has vetoed expensive ad campaigns in favour of consumergenerated content. Having the people who know the product is the best way to capture its essence in

advertising, said marketing administrator for the craft beer company Christy Sterling. Every year Big Rock Brewery receives hundreds of print and video submissions for its Eddies contest, the Top 18 of which get screened at the Big Rock Eddies Awards — a parody version of the Oscars. On Monday night the coveted bragging rights of Big Rock Eddies first-place video

and $10,000 grand prize was awarded to Calgarian Scott Irwin whose video featured a spoof on curling. Irwin said that while the Eddies statue is “really really nice,” nothing beats the $10,000 prize, the bulk of which will go towards purchasing new equipment for next year’s Eddies commercial. “We really enjoy doing this type of stuff, so hopefully it’s

just the beginning for us,” he added. The intention of the Eddies awards gala is not only for crowning the most creative beer drinkers for their submissions. It also raises funds for local charities such as One Yellow Rabbit Performance Theatre, Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, and EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts.

Hot hot heat for Albertans Prepare for a heat wave, Albertans. The province will be hotter than average this summer, according to The Weather Network’s summer outlook for Canadian provinces, released Monday. Both Calgary and Edmonton will see abovenormal temperatures for the summer months — an average of 22 C for both cities. The province will see a normal amount of precipitation (206 millimetres for Calgary and 246 millimetres for Edmonton), but with dry spots in the southeast and northwest. A hotter summer and dry spots in the Boreal forest region and the grasslands could have meant an increase of wildfire danger in the province. metro
