City councillors whittled down a projected tax increase for 2013 on Wednesday, asking staff to bring back a budget in November based on a 5.5 per cent increase, instead of administration’s initial proposal of 7.04 per cent. Mayor Stephen Mandel

voted in favour of the guideline, but cautiously. “There needs to be a real review of some of the things we do, whether or not we should be doing them and the cost to the city,” he said. “We need to take a more critical look.” The reduction wasn’t enough for councillors Bryan Anderson and Kerry Diotte, who did not vote in favour. Diotte said the rates are not sustainable. “They hurt the people who can least afford it,” he said.
