From a Tampa ER To Hollywood On The Red Carpet with ER Doctor Juan Gallego

Sleep? What sleep? Redington Beach resident Juan E. Gallego, M.D. is juggling more than a few hats these days: a new Dad to his baby Joseph, Hollywood screenwriter and producer, and emergency room doctor in Tampa. After working in a fast-paced Detroit Medical Center as Chief Resident, he arrived in Tampa with his wife, Jill, and has worked for Emergency Medical Associates of Tampa Bay for over seven years. At the young age of 39, Dr. Gallego is also juggling a successful career as a Hollywood screenwriter and Executive Producer. “Med School gave me experience in some of the toughest ERs in the nation from Chicago to New York City,” Gallego says. Originally from South Florida, he credits his college years as an undergrad at Florida State University that sparked the passion for screenwriting. “My friends back at the Frat house, in Tallahassee, remember me as the comedian, always writing funny notes,” said Gallego. His newest film is called “Mantervention,” now available in VOD and ON DEMAND. He recently enjoyed a Red Carpet Hollywood “industry” premiere for his comedy for family and friends, which will debut nationwide in the fall. The topic is universal: Getting Over Your Ex! When asked if this was written from his own college experiences, he simply smiles and says: “You could say that. In fact, my college buddy, now in LA, was instrumental in getting Mantervention produced.” The ER Doc can often be found writing his next screenplay in the quiet and calm of the Madeira Beach library.

Celebrate the Panama Canal Museum of Fine Arts exhibits photographs by Ernest “Red” Hallen

Ernest “Red” Hallen (American, 1875-1947). Operation of Gatun Locks. S.S. Allianca leaving upper-west chamber and entering Gatun Lake (June 8, 1914). Gelatin silver print. Gift of Dr. Robert L. and Chitranee Drapkin from The Ludmila Dandrew and Chitranee Drapkin Collection.

In celebration of the centennial of the Panama Canal, the Museum of Fine Arts commemorates the milestone with an exhibit of 50 photographs by Ernest “Red” Hallen. The exhibit, located on the second-floor in the Works on Paper Gallery, reveals a story of far-reaching economic and political implications of the building of the canal from 1904 to 1915. Curated by curatorial assistant, Sabrina Hughes, who received her MA in art history from University of South Florida, Tampa, the exhibit shows the dramatic changes to the area during its construction. The original canal was conceived in 1880 and begun by France, with the idea to create a trading route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, speeding up the transportation. However, financial troubles and diseases halted the initiative.

16

September 2014

After Panama received its independence in 1903, it negotiated with the United States for construction and the canal was completed on Aug. 15, 1914. The U.S. managed the waterway until 1999 and the round-the-clock trade route is now managed by the country of Panama. In 1907, Hallen, at 32, was appointed the official photographer by the Isthmian Canal Commission (ICC), the American administrative body overseeing the canal. He went on to produce more than 16,000 images during his 30-year career. Until his retirement in 1937, his photographs were the primary means by which

Americans and the world experienced this engineering feat. On display are photographs of the construction of the Gatun, Miraflores, and Pedro Miguel Locks, which raise and lower ships between the main elevation of the canal and sea level. Photographs of the tugboat Gatun, the first to traverse the Gatun Locks on September 26, 1913, and celebrating spectators, demonstrate the excitement surrounding this moment. The rushing water in images of the Gatun Spillway Dam conveys the monumental human attempt to corral the forces of nature.

Building the Panama Canal — Photographs by Ernest Hallen, will be on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg through Sunday, November 9, 2014. For more information, visit www.fine-arts.org or call 727.896.2667.

Tampa Preparatory School Transforms Classrooms Middle School Students at Tampa Preparatory School will enter the doors this year and find their classrooms transformed into Active Learning Environments (ALE). These customizable spaces feature 3LCD touch-enabled interactive projectors, green screens, custom sound systems, amplification systems and ergonomic furniture. One of the most important considerations when designing the new space was the skill set students will need to be successful. Breaking out from the traditional classroom setting will foster engagement, problem solving and collaboration. These changes, along with the iPad one-to-one initiative that began last year, support the unique learning styles of adolescents. The Silver Queen, CEO & President, Greg Arbutine

All That’s Precious Sterling Silver, China, & Crystal Create a Dazzling Collection | By Mary Lou Janson For more than 40 years, anyone seeking a one-of-a-kind gift, hard-to-find silver pattern, imported crystal ornament, or a piece that could become a precious family heirloom, has likely taken a shine to The Silver Queen. What started as a source for coin collectors gradually grew into a highly regarded resource for precious sterling silver, catering to clients throughout the U.S. and beyond. The family-owned and operated business prides itself on stocking the latest flatware patterns, to those no longer in production that have been restored to their former luster and “like new” condition. The silver lining to doing business with Silver Queen is its incomparable inventory of more than 12,000 patterns and 165,000 sterling silver pieces.

“We are the experts in this business. We grew up in the business and we all share a passion for what we do,” said Greg Arbutine, CEO & President. His parents, Art and Patricia Arbutine, founded the venture that now employs four generations of family members. From its original Belleair Bluffs site to the current, landmark location in neighboring Largo, The Silver Queen remains true to its silver roots while diversifying to include services like engraving, offering a vibrant online shopping experience, providing a full range of imported to domestic dinnerware and catering to collectors. Items are carefully curated from estate sales, jewelry store buyouts and even individuals selling 32-piece place settings they no longer need.

Within the doors of the 14,500 square-foot former bank building is a stunning, high ceilinged, chandelier studded showroom featuring dazzling displays of designer china and imported goblets, to Royal Doulton figurines and Fabergé eggs. But it’s the personalized shopping experience that makes patronizing this retail and wholesale business, as priceless as some of the higher end merchandise filling its display cases. Customers routinely drop by to see what’s new, or to visit the Silver Museum showcasing the Arbutine’s personal collection of rare pieces, including a spoon made by Paul Revere. Regardless of whether buying or browsing, it’s apparent clients feel as much at home here as if they were family.

Be sure to check out special events like the Annual Garage Sale in October, the Thanks Giving It Away and Black Friday events in November and Christmas sale in December. The Silver Queen | 1350 West Bay Dr. | Largo | 727-581-6827 | www.silverqueen.com

Lacking a few finishing touches, the 19th floor luxury condominium overlooking downtown St. Petersburg’s vibrant waterfront, remained vacant for years until a couple from Knoxville, Tennessee acquired it as a second home.

It would be nearly a year later before the 3,660-square-foot, semi-circular space at the 27-story Ovation that encompasses half of an entire floor, would be completed and completely furnished after wood floors were installed, ceiling beams added, custom cabinets crafted and glass chandeliers hung. Guided by the strong, stylish point-ofview that Sharon Gigliotti provided, and inspired by the primary colors featured in a painting she purchased that remains on display in the dining room, Rob Bowen of the St. Petersburg-based Rob Bowen Design Group, introduced a cool color scheme to the interior. The selected shades add warmth to the open floor plan while complementing – not competing with – the spectacular bay views. “It’s a de-constructed casualness that does not come across as too coastal or too beachy,” said Bowen. “We warmed up the space using a lot of texture and soft, clean lines.” White washed oak floorboards bring a buoyant lightness to the living space. Pecky cypress beams seem to radiate from the central interior to the floor-toceiling windows, reminiscent of rays of sunshine, adding depth and dimension to

the kitchen, dining and living rooms. Chisel-edged limestone, hardened marble and pearlized, glazed wall paint offer eye-catching, extraordinary elements that lend both elegance and a slight edginess to the overall design. A long-distance collaboration between designer and client was established as a means of moving the project along. That required almost daily communication, primarily via email, to expedite selections of finishes, colors and wall treatments. “Sharon really gave us a lot of freedom to present concepts,” Bowen said. “We had an open chain of communication so that made it easy.” What was not shared were photos tracking the transformation. No images of the work-in-progress on the three bedroom, three-and-a-half bath space were revealed. Instead, the entire interior was kept under wraps until the moment Sharon stepped out of the condo’s private elevator and first entered the newly enhanced space. “When I walked through the double doors that day, I literally let out a whoop. I was screaming with delight,” she recalled.

The result is a soothing combination of gray and turquoise colors, furniture that floats rather than stands flush against walls, due to the curved architectural design, and a sense of smoothness, rather than harsh lines, that contribute to the resulting welcoming warmth and inviting comfort. “I really envisioned a very uncluttered, clean and peaceful lifestyle. I realized that looking out over the bay, I wanted colors that would not take away from that incredible view,” she recalled. “I imagined a calming palette with soothing grays, creams and a pop of color.” Sarasota initially was the frontrunner in Steve and Sharon Gigliotto’s search for a seasonal home, due to climate and family who lived there. After visiting St. Petersburg, Sharon had a change of heart and decided its outdoor cafés, youthful vibe and ease of getting around would be a better fit for the couple and their two rescue dogs, Ierra and Kip. With two sons in college, one in Baltimore and the other in Portland, and the couple’s ties to Knoxville, the proximity of Tampa International Airport was also

a consideration in closing on the St. Petersburg residence. Once the decision was made and the real estate transaction completed, it was time to make the space move-in ready. Not an easy task when the client lives out-of-state, but with the help of occasional visits for tasks, like fabric selections, and frequent email exchanges or phone consultations, it worked. “I am usually a person who is very involved with the process. I took great pains to let Rob and Romy Posner know what my vision was beforehand,” Sharon said. “I gained an enormous amount of trust in them. They knew what I wanted and they created it for me.” M

The global company, headquartered in Boston, serves more than 30 million members in every major region of the world. The company works with the best five percent of doctors to find the right diagnoses and right treatments, and seamlessly integrates its services with employers’ other health-related benefits. By utilizing Best Doctors, members have access to the brightest minds in medicine to ensure the right diagnosis and treatment plan. Best Doctors’ team of researchers conducts a biennial poll using the methodology that mimics the informal peer-to-peer process doctors themselves use to identify the right specialists for their patients. Using a polling method and balloting software, that Gallup® has audited and certified, they gather the insight and experience of tens of thousands of leading specialists all over the country, while confirming their credentials and specific areas of expertise. The result is the Best Doctors in America® List, which includes the nation’s most respected specialists and outstanding primary care physicians in the nation. These are the doctors that other doctors recognize as the best in their fields. They cannot pay a fee and are not paid to be listed and cannot nominate or vote for themselves. Friedreich’s Ataxia Update Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) is a progressive neuromuscular disease that affects 15,000 people worldwide. Over the course of the disease, individuals develop balance issues often leading to full-time wheelchair use, impaired speech, hearing and vision loss, and ultimately, a shortened lifespan due to heart complications. In pursuit of treatment and a cure for FA, international scientists, physicians, patients and families came together on September 4 - 6 at the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance’s (FARA) sixth annual Scientific Symposium and Energy Ball Gala. Updates of ongoing drug discovery efforts, clinical trials, along with emerging treatments in the fields of gene therapy were discussed on a scientific symposium. The FARA Energy Ball annual fundraiser, emceed by ABC Action News anchor, Wendy Ryan, and chaired by Tampa Bay Lightning CEO, Tod Leiweke and his wife Tara, was successfully held on Sept. 6. There was a live auction featuring exclusive getaways, cocktails and dinner was served, and guests were treated to a high energy performance from The Spazmatics.

Suzanne and Paul Avery

Funds raised at the event went straight to FARA and the USF Ataxia Research Center. Last year, FARA dedicated over $3 million towards drug development and clinical research worldwide. “This event provided an excellent platform for scientists to discuss research developments, patients and their families to be updated on advancements, and for those who care about FA to lend a supportive hand,” says Ronald Bartek, President of FARA. “Acting alone, there is very little any of us can accomplish. Acting together, there is very little we will not accomplish!”

METROGuide Wine

Muscadet: On the Verge of Extinction? By Kevin Pelley

M

uscadet is the wine made in the westernmost end of the Loire Valley. This bone-dry style of white wine has a well-deserved reputation for being the world’s finest pairing with oysters and just about any type of shellfish. Muscadet is neither a place, name nor a grape varietal, simply the name applied to wines of Pays Nantais appellation, composed of the Melon de Bourgogne grape. The vineyards are sea swept and the soils are ancient uplifted seabeds comprised of granite, marl and schist. The wines are briny, crisp and dry and are often ‘sur lie’ aged, a technique that helps add body and creaminess to the palate, by aging the wine on the spent yeast after fermentation. The Melon de Bourgogne grape is a mostly neutral wine with flavors of lemon, green apple, anise, sea salt and yeast, but the stony, mineral notes are the hallmark of this varietal. Muscadet represents one of the world’s great values as some of the best producer’s finest bottling can be had for under $20 and many for far less.

106

September 2014

However, Muscadet is in trouble. Sadly, one-third to half the producers in the region are struggling. During the recent global economic downturn, over 60 Muscadet producers called it quits. A perfect storm has had devastating effects. A hard freeze in the 2008 vintage resulted in a severely decreased crop. Muscadet’s top export market is the United Kingdom, but recent value-added tax hikes on wine have caused this market to slump. Also, over the last couple of decades many producers have relied on quantity over quality, resulting in consumers seeking alternatives to the once popular wine they drank in the 1980s. So, with all these factors, is Muscadet on the verge of extinction? Luckily, there are a handful of truly top-notch producers who have recently helped the global status of the region, by successfully petitioning the INAO (an organization that regulates French agricultural products) to add three communal crus to the Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine appellation. They are Clisson, La Pallet and Gorges. Four others crus will eventually be

www.TampaBayMetro.com

added. Wines from the designated crus must not only come from these geographical boundaries, but have more ripeness (higher alcohol content of 11 percent or more), older vine age (at least six years), lower yields and longer ageing requirements before release (18-36 months). This will help consumers and sommeliers distinguish the best wines from the region. If you have never had Muscadet, do yourself a favor and track down a bottle of this incredible wine and enjoy it with your favorite seafood or shellfish dish. Here are three to look for: 2013 Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet ‘Clos de Briords’ $19.95 | Proprietor Marc Ollivier is a madman focused on producing the finest wines in the region. Biodynamically farmed and hand-harvested from a single vineyard plot comprised of deep clay and schist over granite, the wine is a powerful expression of Muscadet capable of ageing for a decade or more. Notes of pear, lemon, mineral and sea spray combine for a compelling wine and an incredible value. 2011 Domaine Luneau-Papin Muscadet ‘Clos des Allées’ $21.95 | This wine is made from a single plot consisting of vines that are 45 years old. This is a particularly opulent style of Muscadet with flavors of lemon zest, lime rind, white flowers, minced chive and wet stones. This wine is also organically farmed and the vines are hand harvested. Very compelling. 2013 Domaine Joseph Landron Muscadet ‘Clos La Carizière’ $15.95 | Incredible wine, unique for its smoky minerality derived from the orthogneiss rock in which the vines are planted. This old vine wine, originally planted in 1944, has been organic since 2000 and is another stunning example and an incredible value. Flavors of bread dough, smoke, lemons, tart green apples and seaweed make for an ideal match with oysters, both raw or smoked.
