New Exhibition at The James Museum

Icons & Symbols of the Borderland: Art from the US-Mexico Crossroads

A vibrant, bilingual exploration of the U.S. - Mexico border region’s unique culture opens on August 24, 2024 at The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art.

The exhibit features 27 artists and over 80 works of art, including large paintings, collages, neon, photography, and sculptures, the exhibition explores the unique cultural symbols of the U.S. - Mexico border region and offers a different perspective of the American West. All artists are members of the JUNTOS Art Association (est. 1985, El Paso, Texas), whose art is deeply informed by both their Latin American heritage and everyday life near the border. The exhibition was curated by Diana Molina.

Exhibition themes include Environment, Borders, Sacred and

Profane, and Foodways — are repeated icons. These shared motifs reflect humanity’s inclination toward symbols as a tool to express who they are, and what they believe. Individually, these artworks tell personal stories. Collectively, they contextualize a controversial landscape and celebrate a unique culture full of rich tradition and beauty.

“The borderland is a place where histories converge and cultures intertwine, creating a dynamic artistic expression,” says Robin Nicholson, Executive Director of The James Museum. “This exhibition highlights the role artists play in expressing cultural identity and provides insight into the complex binational tapestry of the region.”

The exhibition boasts a variety of media and technical approaches, with

artwork characterized by playful juxtapositions, spiritual innuendos, somber realisms and bold narratives. Molina emphasizes the importance of this exhibition in providing insights into the region’s past, present and future.

“Now, more than ever, the U.S.Mexico boundary is at the forefront of the national conversation. The artists reflect on the lived experience both north and south of the border and the inherent Mestizaje, a blend of Indigenous, Mexican, and American heritage,” said Molina. “Providing a close-up view of the crossroads at a critical point in U.S. history, the artwork makes vibrant personal and political statements that inspire constructive dialogue and connective tissue to bridge divisions and better shape our future.”

Check the website for a variety of programing in September and October to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month and includes special tours, music nights, book club, dance performance and artist talks.

The exhibition will be presented in English and Spanish and runs through January 19, 2025

Getting the Party Started

Austin Rovetti, Co-founder and COO, Shottys

The party starts when shots enter the picture, keeping the energy alive and well during most any scenario. Allow us to awaken the party animal within, featuring an up-close and personal look into one of the key players behind Shottys, an exclusive pre-made jello shot company. Meet Shottys Co-Founder and COO, Austin Rovetti.

Shottys came to fruition when Rovetti and business partner, Joe Block met while playing board games. “We were both very social, always hosting parties, game nights, tailgates—you name it,” recalls Rovetti. “For a fun, nostalgic twist, we’d make jello shots, which were always a massive hit with our friends. One day, it struck us: why not create a pre-packaged version of these jello shots that you could pick up at your local liquor store? And thus, Shottys was brought to life in 2016.”

“Shottys is making a noticeable

impact, competing with major players and securing spots in top retail chains across the country,” said Rovetti. “According to Nielson IQ, we’re among the top 5 fastestgrowing RTD brands in the country, which reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire team.” Shottys is available Walmart, Sam’s Club, Costco, Total Wine and More, ABC Fine Wine and Spirits & more.

METRO caught up with beverage entrepreneur behind Shottys and asked about the brand and his favorite places to hang out when in Tampa.

METRO: How was initial growth created?

Austin Rovetti: Our products are all about bringing people together, so offering 24 shots with four exciting flavors in one convenient package is a real win for our consumers. We introduced a refreshed package several years ago, and despite the recent downturn in the alcohol industry, we’re on track to have our best year yet. We’ve even been able to work with high level celebrities to keep their fridges stocked with Shottys.

METRO: Any particular vision for the brands future?

AR: We’ve already launched some new non-jello products that are flying off the shelves as fast or even faster than our core items. Take our Green Tea Shots, for example. They’re some of the hottest cocktail shots ordered at bars across the country, and Shottys is the only brand offering a pre-packaged version. Being a small company means we can be super nimble, and bring new innovations to market in no time.

METRO: Your favorite part about the brand/product?

AR: One thing that always brings a smile to my face is hearing from customers who reach out via social media or email to share how much they enjoyed our shots with friends.

METRO: What are a few favorite places to drop by while in Tampa?

AR: I love to check out the cocktail scene at Mandarin Hide or American Social. When I’m in the mood for something a bit more retro, I enjoy the vibe of Lost and Found. If I’m looking to go beachward, Postcard Inn has a fun summer scene, and happens to be a great partner of Shottys. If I’m after a good happy hour, Bartaco is a classic go-to.

Creating an Oasis with a Sophisticated, Luxurious and Playful Vibe at Hyde Park House

Photography: Danielle Bradley, Karen

Blending art with a glamorous luxury in a hi-rise luxury condo results in a stunning and sophisticated living space. It began after Nadine Jacobs saw another condo that the team at McKinlay Rose Interiors had completed at Hyde Park House in historic Hyde Park. Jacobs saw her neighbors condo and admittedly had “condo envy.” “I called them and hired them right away to finish and furnish our new condo in Tampa. Our home is in D.C., but we wanted a home close to our daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren,” recalls Jacobs.

The color palette for the condo consists of shades of champagne, creams and gold with pops of gemstone colors. Shades of chartreuse and bold blues on the custom fabrics add visual interest and create an extra touch of luxury. “Sophisticated, luxurious and playful describes the vibe,” said McKinlay.

Upon seeing the condo complete, owners Alan and Nadine Jacobs were thrilled with the results of their Hyde Park condo. “I was in awe, it was just magnificent,” says Nadine Jacobs. “Being 1,200 miles away and giving them the keys eight months ago, I have to say they are the most professional, wonderful, trustworthy, skilled artisans, and I have the condo of my dreams, and I couldn’t be happier.”

The couple moved in turn-key to the condo they entrusted to McKinlay Rose Interiors led by designers Kristen McKinlay and Melanie Rose. “They even washed the linens, and blankets prior to making the

beds,” exclaimed Nadine. “It’s our “oasis” condo.”

The couple are avid art collectors and many of the pieces from their collection were curated by McKinlay Rose. “Art work infused into the design makes the home more personal,” said McKinlay.

The art piece by David Dreiban “Falling in Love” is the focal point in the living area. “Dreiban is a sensual artist and the bodies in this piece reflect larger than life women,” said Jacobs, who fully admits that she herself has a big personality.

The condo entry is accented with a neutral wall covering and accented with a gorgeous butterfly gold mirror. On the entry table there are lucite based lamps with linen shades to provide a calming welcome.

The open kitchen displays a white rhino marble backsplash with mother of pearl inset, the white cabinets are accented with lucite and gold accent hardware. The center island has cream colored counter stools. The lighting showcases three hanging leaf pendent lights in gold.

The small, but mighty powder bath has geometric

gold leaf, hand-foiled wall covering with a reverse glass mirror, and hand-cut quartz chandelier.

Friends and family can gather in the dining room around a marble and brass table with chairs showing lucite legs. The custom wool rugs are three-dimensional, burnt out adding visual interest to the space. In the den, utilizing mirrors to reflect the light, McKinlay Rose put four star burst gold mirror with handcut selenite mirrors to enhance the openness. A custom wing chair with hide back leather accented with gold studs offers the perfect spot for relaxing with a book. Softness is added with a silk rug, Mongolian fur throw and Murano glass bowl accents.

For the guest room, fun bunk beds were created for the couple’s grandkids to enjoy when they spend the night.

McKinlay Rose handled the complete design project from start to finish including all project management, construction, painting, lighting, furnishings and

accessorizing. “It’s all in how you put things together,” said Melanie Rose.

“Everything was custom created including drapery, upholstery, and carpets,” said McKinlay. “We added wall coverings to create texture and depth and delineate spaces.”

Each of the rooms were completed with finishing lines and accessories available at the Home Accessory boutique at McKinlay Rose Interiors that is open and available to the public.

“Melanie and Kristen are like family,” said Jacobs. “We are blessed to have them in our life.” M
