TAMPA BAY GO RED FOR WOMEN EXPERIENCE

ENERGY, POWER AND SURVIVAL LEAP OUT OF THIS YEAR’S FEATURED IMAGE “THE FIGHT” BY ASHLI HARPER

Thick, raised paint to create movement and energy, along with choice of color, may take your mind to current headlines, but the motivation for these is not from today’s news.

In “The Fight” – the featured image for 2025 Gasparilla Festival of the Arts – the powerful message conveyed by artist Ashli Harper was one she was telling only to herself, and it wasn’t political, at least not most of it.

As with symbolism in much of art across millennia, the messages in “The Fight” go in a different direction than what viewers might interpret. When she first put brush to canvas, Harper was having a very private conversation in her

mind, telling herself to take the next step in her health journey.

This directive wasn’t about the dismantling of Roe v Wade, it wasn’t the election, nor was it Florida’s Amendment 4. It was about her own mental and physical health – she was urging herself to get past her recent cancer diagnosis and to get on with surviving.

That honesty, fully to herself, is in Harper’s whole portfolio, and she approaches each project and piece with little preconceived notion of what the final image will be. In her work “Pain” – a closeup face of a Black women seeming to scream in agony – the image came

to Harper when she was first diagnosed with cancer.

“It was all my pent-up angst,” she said. Her no-firm-plan approach should not be construed as free styling, but more likely true emotion coming to life, perhaps an outlet, a pathway, for pushing off the burden she’s carried for too long.

“I paint what I’m feeling in the moment,” Harper said. “For ‘The Fight’ I went into the studio and told myself I’ve been down and out long enough. I rallied myself. It was a big turning point for me. Through that paining, I changed from my ‘why me?’ phase to my ‘get down to business’ phase.”

The fact that the image is a woman – a strong Black woman – brandishing fists inside pink boxing gloves and preparing to throw a powerful punch to some unseen, but perhaps well-known, foe is the additional message Harper doesn’t mind viewers interpreting out of her work.

“Every woman has faced a battle when she’s had to decide if it’s fight or flight,” Harper said. “So this goes beyond what I am personally facing. It’s about battles that every woman faces, daily.”

In the 2024 Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, Harper was named an Emerging Artist. And this year, her recent work “The Fight” made the top of the list for the GFA Featured Image, meaning it will be used on promotional materials for the March 1-2, 2025 event. This designation certainly gives Harper even greater exposure for her current work, but it also indicates there’s more to come from her.

“I hope people can see and feel my genuine passion for life and empathy for others,” Harper said. “But it’s not a final punch; there may be more.”

The Subversive Eye at The Dalí Museum

Exploring Surrealism’s Influence on Photography, Featuring Experimental Works from Around the Globe, Interactive Elements and Special Programming

The current exhibition at The Dalí Museum invites visitors to see the world through a new lens with the opening of The Subversive Eye: Surrealist and Experimental Photography from the David Raymond Collection. The exhibition offers an extraordinary window into the evolution of photographic experimentation through over 100 rare works by 50 visionary artists spanning from 1925 to 1948.

The Subversive Eye examines how artists employed innovative techniques such as multiple exposure, solarization and unconventional framing to challenge perception. The exhibition traces the global reach of surrealist experimentation, drawing connections between avant-garde movements across Eastern Europe, Germany and Japan, highlighting profound works by artists including Eileen Agar, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Dora Maar, Lee Miller, Osamu Shiihara and Man Ray.

“Photography was a vital tool for Surrealists to blur the lines between

reality and imagination,” said Dr. William Jeffett, Senior Curator at The Dalí and curator of The Subversive Eye. “As The Dalí celebrates the centennial of Surrealism, this exhibition highlights how artists used experimental techniques to challenge perceptions and explore the subconscious, transforming photography into a powerful medium of expression.”

The Subversive Eye presents a rare and carefully curated selection of avant-garde works from David Raymond’s collection, incorporating perspectives from beyond its European core. Raymond, internationally recognized for his discerning eye, has spent more than 25 years redefining the boundaries of surrealist photography. As Raymond notes, “Surrealism’s truth is rooted in its ability to confront the boundaries of perception. This exhibition is a tribute to that legacy, inviting visitors to reconsider their understanding of both photography and reality.”

The exhibition’s catalog, a scholarly

work enriched with essays by art historian Dawn Adès, Dalí Museum Director Dr. Hank Hine, Dr. William Jeffett and David Raymond serves as an authoritative text on the diffusion of surrealist ideas in photography.

Beyond the photographs on display, The Subversive Eye engages visitors in the very spirit of Surrealism with interactive experiences and special programming. Within the exhibition, a designated “Photo Studio” encourages guests to capture surrealist-inspired photographs on their own smartphones, celebrating the spirit of avant-garde experimentation. Plus, The Dalí’s Dream Tapestry offers an interactive experience that mirrors the exhibition’s theme, using the groundbreaking AI system DALL·E to transform personal dreams into artistic visions in black and white photographs.

Additionally, while the exhibition is on view, a series of workshops will be offered, providing deeper engagement with surrealist photography techniques, from creating a surreal collage to iPhone and Polaroid technique workshops. Exhibition inspired programs can be found at TheDali.org/Events.

The presenting sponsor of The Subversive Eye is Marion R. Rich, with a deep appreciation for surrealist photography. Supporting sponsors include Ingrid & Jake Jacobus and Adele Visaggio, airport partner St. PeteClearwater International Airport (PIE) and hotel partner TradeWinds Resort on St. Pete Beach.

HOT FOR COOL

Express your style with the hottest trends to turn heads as our weather cools

All about the Jacket. It’s all in the details this season and leading the way is the statement jacket. If you had one amazing piece to purchase for fall, this would be it. Whether it’s denim, leather, wool or suede, it doesn’t really matter — choose your favorite texture, then find your best fit. We always love a great fitting jacket — one that compliments the body with a structured shoulder or cropped above the hip.

Our favorites for the season are: the moto jacket, the fitted/cropped denim jacket, the bomber jacket, the structured shoulder ‘menswear inspired’ blazer.

Bring The Bling. The perfect transition from fall into winter?

Why sparkle, of course. We love this trend as it can be styled in so many ways — from uber chic to rough and rugged.

Our featured looks are ‘party ready’ by keeping tops & bottoms matching, but this trend can be styled many different ways.

Taking a sequined skirt and pairing it back to a fitted tee, moto or bomber jacket and some knee high boots will take this look and give it some edge. If this is more your style, then remember for every delicate piece you wear add in something vintage, distressed or lived-in for an edgier vibe.

Burgundy – Our Color Crush. Whether you call it plum, maroon or wine, we call it perfection!

Burgundy can be styled so many ways that it’s almost considered a ‘neutral’ in our book. A chic way to wear burgundy is ‘head-to-toe’ in a monochromatic fashion, which suggests luxury on every level, like we did here. We paired a matching floral top & bottom, keeping the look simple, as texture definitely takes over.

Styled outfit example — silk burgundy button-down top, burgundy wide-leg wool pant, dark brown pointy-toe shoe, structured plum leather satchel and a few bold jewelry pieces.

Another great way to style this trend would be, mix it with a pop-ofcolor. Styled outfit example — fuschia cashmere pullover, satin plum tea-length skirt, metallic (silver) d-orsay pump and an animal print handbag. Pops of silver jewelry to complete the look!

One more way to style this trend would be giving it an edgy vibe by adding some graphic elements. Styled outfit example — a graphic tee

(or band tee shirt), burgundy corduroy flared bottoms, your favorite sneaker or combat boots paired back to an olive green or denim jacket. Add a crossbody bag and go!

Transform with Texture. We’re talking-feathers, shearling, faux fur, velvet, leather — the list goes on. Many of us who aren’t confident with mixing prints, may want to try this trend instead.

Lush textures offer an elevated vibe and richness when worn together; try topping your outfit off with a vintage fur cropped jacket — wear it back to your best super-dark, high-waisted jeans and a simple tee shirt.

One more fun way to ‘layer in the texture’ would be with bootsanother fall staple. A knee-high leather (or faux leather) animal print boot would make a sophisticated statement, worn back to a simple black sweater dress, can be anything but boring.

Add in a suede moto jacket and metallic clutch for the perfect ‘date night’ option.

Menswear Mash-up. Since the release of Annie Hall in 1977, we’ve been in love with this trend and glad it’s back in a big way this fall.

Suiting separates always look polished, especially when tailored to perfection. A matching jacket and skirt are a timeless way to look chic without having to put a ton of effort into getting dressed.

If matching sets aren’t your thing, no worries. A classic houndstooth pant can be an amazing staple that lets you layer lots of rich texture into the mix. Keep secondary pieces mostly solid as houndstooth will be the star of the show.

Our favorite menswear picks for this season are: smoking jackets, velvet, and tuxedos.

Paired Perfection. Twinning has become a style staple in the world of fashion since it was introduced a few years ago We thought it might be a ‘one-hit-wonder’ so to speak, but that wasn’t the case.

As this trend has evolved, it’s taken on a life of its own, going in two different directions; a ‘super-casual’ spin into the land of athleisure and an elevated ‘dress-to-impress’ spin, focusing on silk prints and flowy fabrics.

Paired looks can be dressed up or down, depending on the event, which offers so much versatility in accessorizing as well.

Matchy-matchy is a win-win! M

Gown Guide 2025

Step into bridal fashion’s most captivating trends with the 2025 Gown Guide. This year’s styles celebrate individuality and artistry, from hand-painted florals and dramatic scarves to flowing capes and vintage-inspired silhouettes. Drop-waist ballgowns, chic midi and mini dresses, and statement bows redefine timeless elegance, offering something extraordinary for every bride’s unique vision. Robin Wilson, owner of Paváne Couture Bridal traveled to NYBFW and saw great styles and inspirations for brides-to-be for next season. Below are Wilson’s top trends that graced the runway shows.

TOP 5 TRENDS FROM FALL/WINTER 2025 NEW YORK BRIDAL FASHION WEEK

1. HAND PAINTED FLORALS - While last season teased some colorful florals, this season they are everywhere. The delicate hand painted flowers add a touch of playful femininity to these big ballgowns. Moving away from traditional ivory, many designers are introducing soft, pastel hues to create a non-traditional, yet elevated design. Soft blues, pinks and greens seem to be the most popular options. Some designers are even adding colorful florals to veils to complete the look.

2. SCARVES AND CAPES - Scarves have made their way into bridal. As a chic alternative to a veil, scarves add a sense of old money drama. Something about the flow of the scarf creates a soft romantic design to the look. Capes on the other hand, add a Hollywood glamor aspect to the gown. With both scarves and capes, it adds more coverage for a modest bride, while also being removable, giving the option for two different looks for the same gown.

3. DROP WAIST BALLGOWNS AND VINTAGE SILHOUETTES - This season’s designers are drawing on vintage inspiration, with details and silhouettes reminiscent of the 19th and 20th centuries, including oversized skirts and corset bodices. The drop waist has been a huge topic this season, creating the most flattering figure for each and every bride. The drop waist is typically paired with a large skirt, creating a “Bridgerton” ball look. This trend offers brides a range of expressive, fashion-forward yet very traditional options, perfect for making a statement on their big day.

4. MIDI AND MINI DRESSES - Typically worn for the reception or “after party,” shorter dresses are now a must. It seems most brides now want an outfit change — if they buy one gown, they must leave with a bridal mini as well. This season, we saw a twist on the usual party-ready mini dress, and were introduced to the bridal midi. This option offers brides a more comfortable dress to dance in, while also keeping qualities of a traditional wedding gown, length wise. Everything about them screams “elegance”!

5. BOWS - Bows appeared last season, and have since taken over the bridal world. Coming in all fabrics and sizes, most designers now have at least one bow dress. We’ve seen giant, dramatic bows with tassels as long as the train, and even small ribbon bows added to a gowns belt or neckline. Any way that a bow is added, it shows a sense of drama and feminine touch. Designer Pnina Tornai is the queen of bows, making them available to add to any gown whether its lace or satin. We recommend making them detachable to create two looks out of one dress. W+E
