Exploration leads to growth in a lot of ways. Growth, you can find at Selby Gardens as they proudly present the ninth installment of their annual Jean & Alfred Goldstein Exhibition Series. The work of major artists through the lens of their connection with nature is apparent throughout these educational exhibitions. On view until June 29, 2025, this is surely a must see as a famed musician and gardening coincide, inspiring a memorable experience.
George Harrison, popular guitarist for The Beatles implored the art of gardening as it was an integral part of his identity. Once describing himself as “just a gardener” really shows how much Harrison truly appreciated the craft. He utilized a free approach to gardening that combined creativity, spontaneity, whimsy, humor and joy. While this may have played a role in his artistry as a musician, Harrison truly thrived off his love of gardening.
Blending such an iconic musician and his admiration for all things that bloom, this exhibition at Selby Gardens, combines a dynamic display of objects and ephemera in the Museum of Botany & the Arts with stunning horticultural vignettes in the Tropical Conservatory and throughout the gardens of the 15-acre Downtown Sarasota campus.
Jennifer Rominiecki, president and CEO of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, stated, “Selby Gardens is thrilled to explore George Harrison’s love of gardening and the inspiration he drew from it. We are honored to present this exhibition to our visitors, demonstrating the many ways Harrison connected with nature.”
Throughout the exhibits run, there
will be a selection of special programs highlighting Georges life in the garden. Do yourself a favor, take some time to celebrate the shared passion of
horticulture between George Harrison and Selby Gardens.

Life has twists and turns that are abrupt, yet have to be taken into consideration with a healthy outlook to get through the adversity. In METROPeople, we meet up with Steve Garraty, a local Self-Help Author and Motivational Speaker. Lasting positive change made in the face of adversity is discussed in depth in his book “Greatfruit: How Cancer Led to Living a More Fruitful Life.”
Set to release in March 2025, Garraty takes the reader behind the scenes into his life altering journey with cancer after leading an unsustainable way of life. He made changes to his lifestyle and way of thinking, all thanks to his cancer journey. Truly a glass half full out look on life, it was a pleasure to get the inside scoop on touchy, yet incredibly important topics.
Garraty’s success in business and life are attributed to the raw, inspiring
and honest tellings in his book. He is a husband of 30 years, father, business leader as a VP of Sales, and advocate for living a more fruitful life. Enjoy our interview and be sure to grab his book upon release. The book releases on Amazon on March 11, 2025.
METRO: What inspired you to share your childhood cancer journey in a book, and what do you hope readers will take away from it?
Steve Garraty: My parents encouraged me to keep a journal during my battle with cancer and chemotherapy as a way to process and cope with the experience. Years later, after having kids of my own, I realized that sharing my story could be a powerful way to pass on the lessons I learned about
resilience, perspective, and gratitude. Through this book, I hope to inspire readers to see life’s toughest moments as opportunities for growth and transformation.
METRO: What was the most challenging part of revisiting and writing about such a personal and difficult experience?
SG: As I became more vocal about my journey, I realized how sharing it could resonate with and inspire others facing their own struggles. That realization became my motivation to write this book—to provide hope, encouragement, and perspective to anyone navigating adversity.
METRO: Are there any specific moments or lessons from your journey that you think shaped who you are today?
SG: My journey shaped every part of who I am today. Going through such a devastating experience showed me the profound importance of the people in my life—God, my family, and my friends—who carried me through when I couldn’t do it alone.
METRO: How has your experience as a cancer survivor influenced your perspective on life, relationships, or goals?
SG: Surviving cancer profoundly shaped my perspective on life, relationships, and goals. It taught me to approach each day with a glass half-full mindset and to find gratitude even in the smallest moments. I’ve become intentional about letting the people in my life know how much they mean to me and making time to nurture those relationships.

Castle Connolly’s established nomination survey, research, screening and selection process involves many hundreds of thousands of physicians as well as academic medical centers, specialty hospitals and regional and community hospitals all across the nation.
The online nominations process –located at nominations.castleconnolly.com – is open to all licensed physicians in America who are able to nominate physicians in any medical specialty and in any part of the country. The result — we identify the top doctors in America and provide you, the consumer, with detailed information about their education, training and special expertise in our online directories and national and regional magazine “Top Doctors” features.
Doctors do not and cannot pay to be selected and profiled as Castle Connolly Top Doctors or Rising Stars.

In 2024, the American Heart Association’s Nation of Lifesavers campaign ignited a powerful transformation across Tampa Bay. By collaborating with schools, nonprofits, NICUs, community health teams, and other community-based organizations, we addressed a critical need—empowering individuals from all sectors with lifesaving CPR skills and access to vital tools in cardiac emergencies.
Cardiac arrest remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States, claiming over 350,000 lives annually. Shockingly, nearly 90% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests result in fatality, emphasizing the urgent need for immediate action. Performing CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival, yet only 40% of those experiencing cardiac arrest receive bystander CPR before emergency responders arrive.
Given these statistics, our mission was clear: equip and inspire the Tampa Bay community to take action when it matters most.
This year alone, the campaign made
an extraordinary impact, distributing 7,276 CPR Anytime Kits and 38 CPR Anywhere Kits to schools, NICUs, community hubs, and nonprofits. As a result, 48,267 individuals received CPR training in just one year! These kits provided simple, step-by-step resources for families, healthcare workers, and community members to master the essential skills of CPR, creating a ripple effect of preparedness throughout the region.
Equally impactful was the deployment of 115 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in high-traffic public spaces, including schools, recreation centers, libraries, and parks. AEDs play a crucial role in cardiac emergencies, as they can restore a heartbeat in critical moments. By strategically placing these devices in easily accessible locations, we have significantly increased the likelihood of survival for Tampa Bay residents and visitors alike.
Beyond distributing life-saving resources, the Nation of Lifesavers campaign is built on a foundation of long-term sustainability. Every partner organization—whether a nonprofit, school, or healthcare facility—adopted comprehensive cardiac emergency response plans. These plans ensure that staff and volunteers are prepared to act quickly, locate AEDs, and administer CPR with confidence, embedding lifesaving
knowledge and resources into everyday operations.
The implications of this initiative are profound. Tampa Bay is now a safer, more prepared community where lives can be saved in moments of crisis. NICUs in hospitals are better equipped to educate families, community health teams have the tools to protect vulnerable populations, and schools have reinforced a culture where safety and preparedness are paramount.
However, our work does not stop here. The Nation of Lifesavers campaign is more than a year-long initiative; it is a movement designed to save lives for generations to come. With every kit distributed, every AED installed, and every community trained, we are laying the groundwork for a healthier and safer Tampa Bay.
If your company or organization is inspired by the strides we’ve made, we invite you to join this lifesaving mission. By working together, we can expand our impact, bringing hope and safety to every corner of Tampa Bay. Connect with our team and become a part of the next chapter in building a Nation of Lifesavers. Because in Tampa Bay, when seconds count, we are ready.

His resilience mirrors the strength I see in this community and the determination of those affected by heart conditions who refuse to let it define them. I’ve been deeply inspired by the incredible spirit of this community and the American Heart Association.
Through my career at Dillard’s, I’ve had the privilege of working with the women of this organization and witnessing their remarkable impact. I am proud to support the survivors, families, doctors, and advocates fighting against these diseases.

Heart disease isn’t just a statistic for our family—it’s personal. Vernon and I support the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement because we’ve seen firsthand how heart issues can change lives in an instant.
For us, it started when our daughter was born with a congenital heart condition. She had surgery as a baby, and one day, she will need a valve replacement. Advances in heart research saved her life once, and we know they will be crucial for her future. That’s why we support Go Red — because funding research today means more options and better outcomes tomorrow.
But our connection to heart health doesn’t stop there. One of the most surprising things I’ve learned over the years is how differently heart disease presents in women. The classic image of a heart attack—a man clutching his chest—doesn’t always apply to us. Women’s symptoms can be subtle:
fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, or back pain. Too often, we brush these off or don’t react fast enough. I’ve made it my mission to spread awareness, because knowing the signs can save a life—maybe even yours.
And here’s something else I’ve learned: women’s heart care matters. I’ve personally found that female cardiologists listen differently. They take the time to understand my concerns, answer my questions, and talk through my options. That’s made all the difference in how I manage my own heart health.
Then, just last year, heart disease hit close to home again—this time, in the most unexpected way. Our neighbor collapsed in her pool due to heart failure. Thanks to Vernon’s quick thinking, and knowledge of 911 procedures, she was stable by the time the EMTs arrived. She later received a pacemaker and is feeling great now. That experience reinforced what we already knew: awareness, education, and action save lives.
That’s why we’re proud members of Circle of Red — a group of passionate advocates supporting Go Red for Women It’s more than just wearing red once a year. It’s about making sure women get the research, education, and care they deserve. It’s about stepping up, speaking out, and helping change the future of women’s heart health.
If you’re wondering how you can make a difference, join us. Learn the signs, ask the questions, support the research. Because when we Go Red, we don’t just raise awareness — we save lives.
— The Ellinger’s
The Heart Ball promises to get hearts racing – from an exciting Live Auction to in-room entertainment and seated dinner, the event draws Greater Tampa Bay’s most prominent leaders from the corporate, medical, educational, sports and social communities to ‘party with a purpose,” and be recognized and celebrated for their commitment to supporting a world of longer, healthier lives.

Nestled between the sparkling Atlantic Ocean and the lush foothills of El Yunque Rainforest, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, is a captivating destination that offers an irresistible blend of natural beauty, adventure, and luxury. Only 30 minutes from San Juan Airport, this familyfriendly paradise is easily accessible with direct flights from Tampa, making it the perfect getaway without the need for a passport. In less than four hours, you can find yourself immersed in a tropical haven at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico.
Spanning an impressive 72 acres, the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico boasts 579 elegantly appointed suite rooms. During my stay, I had the pleasure of experiencing the exclusive new Villas en la Reserva.
These luxurious accommodations provide a “Resort within a Resort” experience, featuring spacious balconies, separate bedrooms, kitchenettes, and living areas that open to expansive views of the surrounding paradise.
The resort’s commitment to providing an unparalleled experience is evident in its amenities and activities. From rejuvenating spa treatments at the Rainforest Spa to rounds of golf on two courses, there’s no shortage of ways to unwind. For those seeking to improve or test their swing, the resort offers Puerto Rico’s only Top Golf Swing Suite, a state-of-the-art virtual golf experience.
Food enthusiasts will find plenty to savor at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve. I was particularly impressed with Prime 787, an American-style steakhouse that infuses traditional
dishes with a Puerto Rican twist. Another highlight was Nori, the resort’s Asian fusion restaurant, where specialty cocktails and premium sakes complement an exquisite dining experience.
For a more casual beachside meal, Rincon Criollo, the resort’s onsite food truck, serves up delicious local fare perfect for a midday snack or lunch by the sea. Additionally, the resort has partnered with F.O.K. Brewing to create PRadise Bliss Lager, a craft beer brewed with island fruits, offering guests a taste of Puerto Rico in every sip. I also indulged in locally brewed coffee and a Pan So Bao, a traditional Puerto Rican bread treat filled with sweet butter, which provided a delightful taste of the island’s rich culinary heritage.
Visiting during the holiday season added an extra layer of magic to my stay. I had the chance to participate in a Coquito-making demonstration, learning how to craft this traditional Puerto Rican holiday beverage. The resort’s festive atmosphere, combined with its luxurious setting, made for an unforgettable holiday experience.
No trip to Rio Grande is complete without a visit to El Yunque Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. Spanning 29,000 acres, this lush ecosystem is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. I embarked on a memorable hike through the rainforest, marveling at
the breathtaking waterfalls and diverse flora and fauna.
True to the resort’s motto, “Doing nothing means everything,” there are ample opportunities to simply relax and soak in the beauty of the surroundings. Whether lounging on the pristine beaches, enjoying a massage at the Rainforest Spa, or sipping a cocktail by the pool, the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico offers a serene escape from the everyday hustle. For those looking to balance relaxation with recreation, the resort’s array of activities ensures there is something for everyone. Families can enjoy quality time
together, while couples and solo travelers can find moments of tranquility and adventure alike.
Whether you’re seeking adventure in the rainforest, indulgence in world-class dining, or relaxation on sun-kissed beaches, this destination and accommodations at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve promises an unforgettable escape. With its easy accessibility and no passport requirement, reaching paradise has never been simpler. Barcelona Wine Bar | By Ronda M. Parag
We recently had the opportunity to unwind with tapas and wine at South Tampa’s newest gem, Barcelona Wine Bar. A little taste of Barcelona and a lot of local love. Situated in the heart of South Tampa in a newly renovated office building on Bay to Bay, this beloved Mediterranean restaurant chain, known for its laid-back yet refined vibe, has officially made its mark in Tampa, offering an elevated dining experience inspired by the culinary traditions of Spain.
The menu, which draws from the rich culinary history of Spain, is a symphony of tapas—small plates meant for sharing and celebrating the joy of food with friends and family. Dishes and ingredients evolve with the seasons, market availability, and the creative vision of Executive Chef Victor M. Lopez.
A great way to start the meal is with Charcuterie & Cheese. Choose from a selection of meats and cheeses including Jamón Serrano, Chorizos, Salamis, Speck and Manchego, Mahon,
Maldon and more. We chose the Aperitivo Board where the chef chooses for you, and comes with Marinated Olives, Patatas Bravas, Guindillas, Almonds, Fuet and more. The Patatas Bravas, crispy potatoes drizzled with spicy tomato sauce and a garlic aioli, are a perfect bite-sized indulgence. We also tried the Whipped Goat Cheese topped with dates, Pork Belly, and Chicken Thigh atop a Tzatziki sauce. The steamed Mussels in a tomato-based sauce with Gaucho sausage were equally delicious. If you’re craving something heartier, the Paella — a classic Spanish rice dish — offers an array of options, from seafood to traditional chicken and vegetables. This dish is perfect for sharing and showcases the restaurant’s commitment to bold, rich flavors. Not to be missed for dessert are the the Olive Oil Cake sprinkled with Sea Salt and Basque Burnt Cheesecake. Both are reason enough to stop by for a glass of wine and a sweet treat.
Barcelona Wine Bar is known for the award-winning selection of 400+
Mediterranean, Spanish, and Latin American wines both by the bottle and by the glass, all with an emphasis on organic, lesser-known regions, and family-run producers. Recently named “Best Value Wine List” in North America by World of Fine Wine in 2024, Barcelona Wine Bar in Tampa is offering half-off bottles in Tampa every Monday night on all bottles, regardless price or rarity.
The restaurant’s interior captures the essence of Spain, with its vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re dining inside the stylish, modern interior or outside on the charming patio, the space exudes an energy that makes it feel both comfortable and chic. The bar area, complete with an array of artisan cocktails and a wide selection of wines by the glass, offers the perfect spot for pre-dinner drinks or after-work gatherings.
From the first sip, to the last bite, Barcelona Wine Bar is a feast for the senses with it’s energetic atmosphere and award-winning wine list. M
Dogs & Englishmen | By Ronda M. Parag
Tampa’s beloved Mad Dogs & Englishmen has been reborn, bringing its charm and Britishinspired flavors to a larger, more inviting space. Now featuring expanded indoor and outdoor seating, this South Tampa staple is part of the Oxford Commons Hospitality Group, led by Blake Casper and Alison Casper Adams, alongside original owners Wilton Morley and Colonel Rick Craig. We had the pleasure of previewing the reimagined pub during an exclusive friends-and-family evening, and it did not disappoint. The menu pays homage to traditional English fare while incorporating fresh, elevated flavors.
To start, the Whipped Feta — topped with warm chili honey and served with naan bread — was an unexpected delight. Classic Soft Pretzel Bits and Marinated Olives were
also on the “Snacks” menu, but our standout favorite was the Sausage Roll, featuring spiced pork sausage wrapped in flaky puff pastry, perfectly complemented by a curry dijonnaise. The Tuna Tartare, served atop amazu cucumber with orange, smoked ancho oil, black garlic ponzu, and a shabazi crunch, was another refined take on a pub classic.
No visit to an English pub is complete without Fish & Chips, and Mad Dogs & Englishmen delivers with crispy Icelandic cod paired with housemade tartar sauce. Other favorites include the comforting Shepherd’s Pie, hearty Bangers & Mash, and flavorful Chicken Tikka Masala. For those craving a more robust entrée, the menu also features Steak & Chips, Pan-Roasted Chicken, and North Atlantic Salmon.
Salad lovers will appreciate the
variety, from the signature Mad Dog Salad to a Classic Caesar, Crispy Chicken Cobb, and the refreshing Crisp & Fresh. Each can be customized with grilled chicken, seared salmon, or grilled steak for a satisfying meal.
And, of course, no British-inspired meal is complete without dessert. We indulged in the Apple Crumble, topped with sweet crema, but we’ll be back to try the Sticky Toffee Pudding, Brownie Sundae, and Strawberry Custard.
Whether you’re stopping by for lunch, dinner, or just a pint with friends while enjoying live music, Mad Dogs & Englishmen offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere with elevated pub fare that keeps guests coming back for more.
Cheers to good food, great company, and a timeless pub experience in the heart of Tampa! M
