It’s Hot Here in Tampa Bay.

I’m not only talking about the record breaking heat, but all the exciting things happening throughout Tampa Bay. From new restaurants, to numerous real estate projects, the region is red hot. In this issue, we showcase what makes our area truly special in BEST OF METRO 2023. We certainly hope you will agree with our editors selections.

We recently attended a special media event for Cirque du Soleil inside Boulon Brassiere and Bakery in Water Street. Cast and crew from Disney Spring’s Drawn to Life performed inside the restaurant. It was a cool experience to see the unicyclists perform while sipping delicious crafted cocktails and tasting flavorfulappetizers.

In METROBiz, we introduce you to strength and conditioning specialist and Peform24 founder, Levi Jaeckel. As a former college athlete, he has a passion for overall health and wellness. Jaeckel has developed training programs for professional athletes and other adults that want to improve their life by “training like an athlete.” He is kinda a big deal in the fitnessand conditioning world. Peek inside the beautiful renovations of a condo at Westshore Yacht Club by the interior designers at McKinlay Rose Interiors. The design is truly “Tranquil, Tasteful, and Tactile.”

Naples is open and ready for visitors. While Hurricane Ian did cause some damage to the Naples area, many of the hotels, shops and business have made repairs and renovations, and are ready for the season. It’s perfect for a family weekend or a romantic couples getaway to the beautiful Paradise Coast. In the heart of Old Naples, walk to the nearby shops, galleries and restaurants from the boutique hotel, The Capri Inn. For a beachfront location, check out the all-suite Edgewater Beach Hotel. The hotel has been welcoming families for decades, and provides excellent service.

We hope you have been enjoying the summer with a break from the normal routines. But, now things are gearing up again on the social front, and I’m sure we will see you at many of the upcoming charity events in the months ahead.

Experience the Magic of Disney and Cirque du Soleil

In “Drawn to Life”

Cirque du Soleil has had a permanent location at what is now Disney Springs for 25 years, since the original opening of La Nouba in 1998. Now the magic continues with the current show, Drawn to Life, which opened in November 2021 after being reimagined during the pandemic. Recently, Drawn to Life has introduced new acts: Icarian Games acrobatic act Flying Guitarist and Aerial Hoops

An eye-fillingshow of gravity-defying acrobatics, captivating choreography, new musical arrangements, whimsical characters, unique set design and playful costuming, Drawn to Life reconnects adults to their childlike selves and introduces a new generation to the wonders of Cirque du Soleil and hand-drawn animation.

At the heart of the story is the love of

family and the universally unshakable bond between parents and children that remains undimmed by loss or the passage of time.

One of the main characters is Julie, a courageous and determined 12-year-old, who discovers an unexpected gift left by her late animator father: a letter urging her to complete a drawing he left unfinished. From his cluttered desk, Julie is suddenly whisked through a vortex into a world of wonder where comforts of her childhood have come alive and beloved Disney animation characters serve as her guides.

Throughout her quest to complete the animation, Julie learns to erase any self-doubt, to imagine new possibilities and to animate the story of her future.

Cirque du Soleil’s 50th production, Drawn to Life celebrates Disney’s

extraordinary legacy in the art of animation, from the earliest pencil sketches to the spellbinding spectacles of today. It marks the first-evertheatrical collaboration of three creative icons: Cirque du Soleil, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering.

Drawn to Life boasts an international cast of 62 artists and 17 designers. Fifteen countries are represented by the artists alone.

Drawn to Life presented by Cirque du Soleil and Disney performs Tuesdays through Sundays at Disney Springs.

EXPERIENCE THE LIFESTYLE

LEVI JAECKEL Founder Perform24

The Tampa fitnessscene is certainly having a moment according to strength and conditioning specialist, and founder of Perfom24, Levi Jaeckel. Growing up in a small town in Iowa, Jaeckel discovered the world of strength and conditioning as a D1 athlete at University of Mexico. He started out as a music major, but soon found a passion for health and wellness,

and chose to major in exercise science. Jaeckel founded Perform24 in 2014, and moved into his current South Tampa facility in August 2015.

He has worked with many current and former New York Yankee’s players including JP Sears, Ron Marinaccio and Clarke Schmidt, just to name drop a few.

He also partnered with the NFL

Players Association for a 6 week training program called “The Breakfast Club” for retired NFL athletes.

METRO had a chance to catch up with Jaeckel and discover more about his fitnessprogram, and why he has become a top trainer to many professional athletes.

METRO: What is your fitnessphilosophy?

Levi Jaeckel: All of my training has the “athletic performance,” flavor. We do still regularly work with pro athletes, but we also work with lots of local adults that require a balance between strength training, mobility, conditioning, and a healthy body composition. We want our clients to be physically capable today and in the future.

METRO: Who are your clients?

Levi Jaeckel: Pro athletes in the different offseason, and local adults all year round. We regularly work with adults battling a chronic injury or looking to bring a roadmap to their training.

METRO: What is your favorite type of exercise?

Levi Jaeckel: I love our training programs because we get creative. We regularly utilize traditional dumbbell, kettlebell, and barbell movements. But, we also push and pull sleds, swing maces, throw med balls, and carry sandbags and rucks.

METRO: What are some of your favorite places in Tampa Bay?

Levi Jaeckel: My family and I love Tampa and we are proud to live in an electric and growing city. I am a sucker for locally roasted coffee, and my kids honestly believe that Chill Bros is heaven on earth.

METRO: Any fun plans for the fall?

Levi Jaeckel: My wife and I have a 4 year old boy and a 3 year old girl. They love Halloween, and they are already asking about it. Between Halloween with our kids and our Squatober tradition at the gym, the whole month of October is a blast.

Guests enjoyed a Curator chat between Curator Joanna Robotham and Pepe Mar. Currently, Mar lives and works in Miami. The exhibition includes nearly 60 works from Pepe Mar and will be on view at the Tampa Museum of Art through Feb. 18, 2024.

It’s a Family Affair on the Upcoming Celebrity Ascent SM

Celebrity Cruises®, the award-winning premium cruise line pioneering resort travel at sea, announced the Godmothers for Celebrity Ascent, launching this November. Captain Sandy Yawn, best known for her appearance on Bravo TV’s hit series, Below Deck, alongside her sister Michelle Dunham, founder of the Jacksonville School for Autism (JSA), have been selected as co-Godmothers of the Ascent. The sisters will now join the industry’s firstbrother Captains, Dimitrios and Tasos Kafetzis, who were announced earlier this year as the chosen duo to jointly take helm of the new vessel.

“We are honored to have Captain Sandy and her sister Michelle join the legacy of Celebrity’s Godmothers, as they are both inspirational women who have dedicated their lives to making a positive impact in the world,” says Laura Hodges Bethge, Celebrity Cruises’ President. “Captain Sandy’s life

story is one of resilience, leadership and strength, as a pioneer in the maritime industry and as an inspirational role model for young women. Her sister Michelle is a tireless advocate for children with autism and shows us what is possible when you follow your vision for a better world. Both women live by Celebrity’s values, and we have no doubt they are the perfect choices for Ascent.”

One of the most time-honored traditions at sea, the Godmother is the spiritual embodiment of a vessel — she is the woman who inspires, protects and positively impacts the lives of everyone who sails onboard.

Tranquil Tasteful Tactile

Photography: Danielle Bradley, Karen Wernert Studio

The foyer offers the first glimpse of the glamour and grandeur found throughout this 2,000 square-foot waterfront residence. The recently completed comprehensive renovation of a Westshore Yacht Club condominium not only transformed the living space from lackluster to luxurious, it also created synergy between the indoors and outdoors, blending the interior’s polished and pristine appearance with the exterior’s breathtaking open water views.

Using a color palette predominantly comprised of cool tones, selecting fabrics and wall treatments featuring subtle textures and patterns and incorporating artistic accessories, such as wall-mounted oil paintings and glass art displayed on select furnishings, designers crafted a look that is tranquil, tasteful and tactile.

“The foyer sets the first impression, the mood. The flow is very important to us and carries the design throughout the house,” said Kristen McKinlay, owner/ designer with McKinlay Rose Interiors. Grass cloth wall coverings, a mirror bordered by a hand-forged metal frame and a painting featuring the same coastal-inspired shades of blue and green found in other rooms enhanced the visual impact of the entryway.

McKinlay, along with business co-owner and design partner Melanie Rose, dramatically updated and elevated the home owned by Bill and Judy Roney, whose frequent guests include their grandchildren. What was a decidedly outdated décor has been recast as a more elegant environment, but one that also features durable, family-friendly finishes The transformation from the before décor to the current design is easily summed up as a transition from drab to fab.

Pairing hints of mint and seagrass blue with shades of gray and white, showcasing light fixtures with shimmerin crystals and shiny metallic elements and selecting silky rugs displaying delicate ripples of color complement the abundant views of Old Tampa Bay’s sparkling waterfront and the sky’s bold blues and colorful sunsets.

“Because they live on the water, we wanted their home to look light, bright and happy,” said Rose. “It is a cohesive, monochromatic feel but with bursts of color.”

Wall-to-wall sliding glass doors and large windows ensure those panoramic scenes are easily enjoyed from both the living and dining areas, the sitting room, both bedrooms, the kitchen and two private balconies. Even with all of that access, a 48-inch-wide, 96-inch-high solid pine-framed mirror strategically placed near the formal dining table creates the illusion of a window that further extends the view.

“The mirror puts another window in the room for additional reflection and to make the space feel larger,” McKinlay added. “It’s always fun to breath new life into what is considered one of the most stunning views in Westshore.”

43 WWW.TAMPABAYMETRO.COM

Meticulously matching upholstery that has sheen with their clients’ preferences for materials that are easily cleaned, creating customized furnishings that offer sleek sophistication, but also fil a particular purpose and addressing every detail in each room define this design team’s success. A linen texture sofa covering provides a richness to the sitting room piece that opens out to double as a guest bed. A granular finish adds decorative detail to that same room’s shagreen coffee table. Lighting sconces are built into the made-to-order tall, tufted headboard within one bedroom to provide convenient nighttime light for reading. Similar champagne-colored, wrought iron chandeliers dangling overhead within the main living area differ in size but match perfectly in terms of grace and fluidity. Wallpaper depicting a motif of overlapping leaves, a bevelled mirror mounted above the vanity and crystal-rimmed sconces alongside the mirror give the bathroom a distinctive and distinguished look all its own.

“They came in and gave the condo a more modern look that is more relevant to today. They really did a stunning job,” said Bill Roney, describing the designers’ efforts.

McKinlay Rose came highly recommended by neighbors within the condo community. After meeting with the principals, the couple was convinced.

“They were excited about the project and had us excited about it. Their passion for their work showed in everything they did,” said Judy Roney. “They transformed our entire place. It was an unbelievable change and we love it.” M

City & Shore On The Paradise Coast

Edgewater Beach Hotel and The Capri Inn

Looking for a getaway to beautiful Naples? I’m talking Naples, Florida.

It’s an easy three hour drive from the Tampa Bay area, and it’s a destination that will have you feeling truly relaxed in no time at all. While summer is the off-season, we recently had a chance to visit the area known as the Paradise Coast with a stay at two unique properties from the Opal Collection.

First up was the beautiful Edgewater Beach Hotel located directly on the coast with seven miles of beautiful white sandy beach. The hotel was completely refreshed after damage from last year’s Hurricane Ian.

The all-suite beachfront hotel features more than 100 rooms, blending resort-style amenities with the comforts of home, and beautiful sunset views of the Gulf of Mexico or sunrises over the city of Naples. We especially loved the spaciousness, beach amenities, two swimming pools and proximity to local attractions. It’s also great for couples to enjoy the beach and to get swept away sipping a cocktail on the sun-splashed pool deck, lounging in a cabana at the beach, or embracing the nightly sunset.

If you are so inclined to keep up with exercise, the fully-equipped fitnesscenter is available. Relax on the beach with beach chairs and umbrellas on a first-come-firs served basis. Cabanas are available for an additional charge. Enjoy getting out on the water with kayaks and paddle-boards,

available to rent. The onsite restaurant, Coast, served up a delicious breakfast including omelets, avocado toast, BLT with egg sandwich and more. We enjoyed lunch at the pool bar with frozen cocktails, and sh tacos and an Ancient Grains bowl with grilled shrimp, as part of the Blue Zones® Inspired program. Dinner was delicious and we even dined in the sand one night with a glorious sunset.

Next, we checked into The Capri Inn. It’s truly a hidden gem with its location near the heart of downtown Naples. Formerly Trianon Old Naples, this Naples boutique hotel has been reimagined as The Capri Inn, and recently completed exciting room renovations as it joined the Opal Collection. Upon our arrival, the hotel team arranged for a private wine & cheese pairing with Jackson Family Wines and Wynn Cheese. If you are looking for a unique experience for a small group, the hotel will gladly handle all the arrangements.

The Capri Inn is perfect for a romantic getaway or a relaxed family trip, with its coastal-chic accommodations, oversized bathrooms, and terraces or balconies. It’s convenient to walk to the nearby shops, restaurants and art galleries. The property also provides an electric GEM to take guests to the beach, nearby shopping on 5th Avenue South, or even to the marina for a sunset cruise. We enjoyed a beautiful catamaran

cruise aboard Miss Naples and seeing some of the stunning homes in Port Royal. While The Capri Inn does not have dining onsite, each morning, we enjoyed complimentary fresh, locally made pastries and coffee served in the dining area.

For dinner one night we headed to The French Brasserie Rustique. Executive Chef and Partner Vincenzo Betulia opened The French, Naples, Florida’s firsttraditional French brasserie, in January 2017. We dined outside under a lighted indigenous “live” oak tree that is the focal point of an expansive romantic outdoor dining area complete with marble tables and French bistro chairs, and an indoor/outdoor bar. The food was delicious from the small plates to the main entrees. From Grilled Shrimp, Foie Gras Terrine to the entree of Duck Leg Confit, each bite was divine. The delicate pastries and decadent desserts prepared by pastry chef, Maria Selas who tempted us with Creme Brûlée, The French Eclair and Chocolate Souffle.

The next evening we headed to dinner at the HobNob Kitchen and Bar. It was a short walk from the hotel for a delicious dinner of interesting takes on traditional favorites. We tried the Snapper in Crazy Water with tomato, fennel, and soft polenta and the popular Meyer Lemon Short Ribs.

We certainly could get use to life in the Paradise Coast, and hope you will venture to Naples soon. M

Bringing The Flavors Of Southeast Asia To Tampa Bay

Sunda New Asian brings all the flavors of Asia home as one of the latest restaurants to open in Tampa Bay. Located in Midtown Tampa, Sunda New Asian offers dishes that celebrate the cultures and tastes of Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. With the success of his two other locations, in Chicago and Nashville, CEO/Founder Billy Dec, has brought his concept to Tampa. Why Tampa? In addition to being a great place to live and work, Dec has been coming to visit family here for years. Dec has seen the growth and positive changes, and believes Tampa offers a great location for the culinary experience of his restaurant.

On a recent visit, our palette was tantalized by the many dishes we tasted. The freshness of the ingredients and the visual appeal of each dish just left us wanting to return to sample more of the expansive menu. The crafted dishes from Executive Chef Mike Molares showcases the best of Southeast Asian cuisine. The dishes kept coming from mouthwatering appetizers to exquisite main courses and decadent desserts.

If you are a sushi lover, you will certainly appreciate the creative works of art from behind the sushi bar with Head Sushi Chef Ise Masanobu from Tokyo. The menu offers a variety of dim sum, noodles, salads and rice dishes, to a

selection of uniquely prepared seafood, beef, pork and poultry. Many of the dishes are meant to be shared around the table with their sizable portions. As the dishes flowed from the kitchen, we were bought out several dishes that are not on the menu, but that showcases the flavors and talent of the kitchen team. We did have the server recommended Crispy Brussels Sprouts and they did not disappoint. The crispy vegetables made with red cabbage, red onions, carrots, chilis, shallots and topped with minced shrimp all in a nuoc cham vinaigrette offered a delicious start. The Oxtail Pot Stickers with braised oxtail, caramelized onion jus and white wasabi cream were delicious pillows of delight. We also had several dishes from the New Asian Creations on the menu including Escolar “The Great White” — escolar served with truffle vinaigrette, potato chip and topped with black truffle shaving, and Salmon Crudo served in a cilantro, lime vinaigrette. The offering of Signature Sushi included the Lobster Wagyu that was as decedent as the name. The roll was filled with creamy lobster, wagyu tataki, foie gras aioli, truffle vinaigrette, jalapeño, wasabi aioli. For a main dish, we tried the Chicken Inasal prepared with lemongrass, tomatoes, red onion, achiote glaze, chili lime vinaigrette, and grilled lemon. We concluded our dinner with the signature dessert “Ridiculous” — vanilla ice cream, ginger carrot cake, glazed walnuts and caramel. It was rich and delicious.

The center bar area provides an impressive list of specialty cocktails, signature sakes, and a collection of popular wines. We sipped on the crafted cocktails of Peared Sake and Grass Tiger. The restaurant’s stylish décor and warm ambiance provide the perfect backdrop for an evening of culinary exploration and socializing. If you haven’t been to Sunda yet, what are you waiting for?

We certainly will be back again soon for more of the savory flavors from Southeast Asia. M
