LUCK & SKILL IN PERFECT HARMONY
Celebrate and Reflect
on the blessings received throughout the year. The holidays are an especially gratifying time to gather with friends and family to celebrate the season. There is much to be thankful for, and we are grateful to our readers, supporters, and advertisers.
In METROPeople, we connect with Alejandra G. Brady who through a spiritual journey authors a new book and has discovered the world of Feng Shui. Brady is using her talents in interior decorating, and as a Feng Shui practitioner, to help elevate the energy of a home, so that the home elevates the people in it.
The stage is set for some stellar performances this season throughout Tampa Bay. Writer Mary Lou Janson has a run down of the options from Opera and Broadway at the Straz Center to the Florida Orchestra at Ruth Eckerd Hall and Mahaffey Theatre. Whatever your choice of performance from musical to theatre, be sure to get your ticket to support the performing arts.
The education of our children is one of the major decisions that every parent faces. METRO has compiled a Private School Guide of schools in the Bay area that highlights the tuition, accreditations, and more. It is a great reference tool to begin the search for a private education.
To really discover the South, it’s time to head North to the beautiful city of Charlotte, NC in Getaways. The culinary and craft beer scene have exploded and with the professional sports teams of the Hornets and Panthers, there is always something to discover in the Queen’s City.
In METROHome, we feature a home renovation in Treasure Island by Interior Designer Chelsea Potthast with Potthast Interiors. Potthast collaborated with the owners to create a space that creates a whimsical design through custom rugs and sumptuous upholstery in shades of sand, soft aquamarine and bright blue. The rich prints and detailed pattern combine ‘Old Florida’ with timeless modern.
Discover in METRO’s City Guide, Tampa Bay’s top charity events, dining, shopping and arts & entertainment.
Cheers,

Time for Change: Art and Social Unrest in the Jorge M. Pérez Collection Now Open at Tampa Museum of Art
Tampa Museum of Art’s expanded gallery space now showcases Time for Change: Art and Social Unrest in the Jorge M. Pérez Collection through March 12, 2023. The exhibition looks at how artists explore conflicts and contradictions of contemporary society, as well as analyzes historical events and reframes them within the present. An interest in the marginalized, the marginal and the margins (of society, of history) unites the works in the exhibition.
“We’re thrilled to partner with philanthropist and collector Jorge M. Pérez and El Espacio 23 to bring this thought-provoking collection of significant contemporary works to Tampa Bay,” said Michael Tomor, the Penny and Jeff Vinik Executive Director of the Tampa Museum of Art. Tomor added, “Time for Change is a fitting start to a new era of expanded exhibition programming at the Museum. We’re eager to welcome the community into our new galleries and begin offering more year-round opportunities to experience and learn from works that reflect our region’s vibrant community.”
Envisioned by Colombian curator José Roca, Founder and Director of FLORA ars+natura, Bogotá in collaboration with Pérez Collection stewards Patricia M. Hanna and Anelys Álvarez, Time for Change features 60 artworks by 57 artists from around the world. The exhibition highlights art — from painting and sculpture to video and works on paper — that addresses unrest through allegory, metaphor or veiled allusion.
Creating Balance & Harmony
Meet Alejandra G. Brady – Author, Interior Decorator, Feng Shui Practictioner and Crystal Healer
Alejandra recently had her official book launch of “I Just Can’t Make This Sh!t Up” at Oxford Exchange in Tampa. Alejandra G. Brady grew up in Laredo, Texas, but has lived in Tampa since 1990, when she moved here after marrying her college boyfriend – Art Brady. The couple has been married for 32 years and have one son, Ryan, who is now 27 and living in DC with his fiancé, Lydia. Alejandra and Art live in South Tampa with their four rescue dogs. The creator of the Feng Shui oracle card deck, “What Should I Feng Shui Today?,” Brady is also a certified Feng Shui practitioner, interior decorator, and a certified crystal healer. Most recently,
Brady collaborated with @amourandlight to create four Feng Shui crystal kits.
A graduate of University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Brady has been designing interiors for almost 20 years. Brady became interested in, and then certified in Feng Shui. She now uses her combined expertise and modalities to create spaces that are not only beautiful, but balanced and harmonious as well. Brady’s goal is to help elevate the energy of a home so that the home then elevates the people in it.
METRO had a opportunity to chat with Alejandra about her writing and on her discovery of the spiritual journey.
METRO: What inspired you to write a book on spiritual healing?
BRADY: I began to be very curious about spiritual modalities once the world of Feng Shui opened up and I decided to try a daily meditation practice. During a particularly powerful practice, I silently asked what my purpose was. I had finished raising our son and had closed my design business to recover from a very unexpected cervical fusion. I was honestly feeling a little lost and adrift as to what my next step in life was and what I was here to do in order to truly make a difference. Design alone didn’t seem to be it for me anymore. All of a sudden, I heard a voice inside my head tell me to write a book.
METRO: How long did it take you to write the book? What was your process?
BRADY: It took about 4 years from the time I began writing to the day the book was released. The process began in a very slow manner. I was familiar with the phrase “when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” That had certainly been the case for me since I began my spiritual journey and sure enough, as I spoke with someone about the challenges I was facing, they mentioned they knew a person who could help. I reached out to Susie Schaefer, who owns Finish the Book publishing and she put an amazing team together for me who guided me the rest of the way.
METRO: Any favorite books? and Why?
BRADY: Honestly, the past five years have been all about learning new modalities, so most of what I have read is related to either Feng Shui, spirituality, crystals or meditation. I do love Elkhart Tolle’s A New Earth The Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukav is another favorite.
METRO: What are your favorite places in Tampa Bay?
BRADY: We are close to Bayshore Boulevard and love taking all 4 dogs on walks along the water. I am currently obsessed with Halelife Bakery. I live a gluten and dairy free lifestyle due to an autoimmune issue, and when I need a little something sweet, that is my go to! We were amazed at the growth in downtown and Armature while we were gone, and love walking along the riverwalk and attending all the outdoor events. Lunch and a little shopping with friends at Oxford Exchange is also a favorite. The Saturday morning market followed by brunch at Cassis, in downtown St. Petersburg, is another go to.
METRO: What is next for you?
BRADY: I am truly trying stop and enjoy the present. In the past eleven months we have sold our Sedona home, moved back to Tampa, my book has launched, the card deck was created, I traveled to Machu Picchu and we moved into a new home. I see 2023 as being filled with even larger scale teaching, traveling and of course, our son’s wedding!
Sculpture Honoring Fallen Tampa Police Officers Unveiled
Steven Anthony Rogai, founder of the Rogai Family Foundation, along with Tampa Mayor Jane Castor and Tampa Police Chief Mary O’Connor, Major Eric DeFelice and metal sculptor Dominique Martinez spoke at the dedication ceremony to honor fallen Master Police Officer Jesse Madsen and those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The ceremony included Madsen’s family, community leaders and other police officers as they attend the reveal of a commissioned sculpture titled “Taking A Stance,” located outside Tampa’s Police Department District 1. Tampa artist Dominique Martinez, a metal sculptor, and CEO of Rustic Steel was commissioned by the Rogai Family Foundation to create the memorial statue. The lion sculpture weighs 800 pounds, stands six feet tall and is made up of various pieces of the police vehicle that Officer Madsen was driving. In addition, 125 de-commissioned pistols, revolvers, shotguns, and assault rifles are woven into the sculpture. It consists of over 6,000 welds throughout the entire piece and took about 700 hours of fabrication.
“The creation of the memorial statue allows the Tampa Bay Community to honor the service and bravery of the police officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice,” said Steven Anthony Rogai. “It has been an absolute privilege to lead the charge of getting this memorial sculpture created and installed by creating the Rogai Family Foundation.”

Philanthropic Women of St. Joseph’s
There is no better example of how the actions of a few can impact so many than the Philanthropic Women of St. Joseph’s. When two longtime volunteers, Elaine Shimberg and Donna Jordan, decided to create a network of community-minded women who wanted to change and save lives in the Tampa Bay community, they may not have imagined their labor of love would grow to over 200 members and become the force behind more than $2,000,000 in donations to benefit the thousands of women, children, and families who come to St. Joseph’s Hospitals for help. But fourteen years later, there is no doubt as to the success of their endeavor.
“My philosophy is pretty simple. Life here in Tampa Bay is a gift,” said Donna. “It offers us privilege and opportunity, but also the responsibility to give something back by becoming more.”
That’s why she co-founded the Philanthropic Women of St. Joseph’s group which has allowed other talented women from all over the Tampa Bay community to come together with a common purpose, and when working together, their combined
effort has been the impetus behind hundreds of projects which continually improve the level of patient care provided at all five of the St. Joseph’s Hospitals. The Philanthropic Women of St. Joseph’s was the first hospital-based investment group of its kind in Tampa.
Annually, members’ philanthropic contributions are pooled. They then review needed projects submitted by St. Joseph’s Hospitals’ team members and collectively vote on which project to fund. From giving radiologists tools to find cancer earlier to investing in innovative heart surgery to learning about the latest in cutting edge technology, they take their role seriously in providing support to doctors, nurses, and patients.
As the Philanthropic Women of St. Joseph’s carries on without Elaine, who passed away last year, they are committed to furthering her legacy under Donna’s extraordinary leadership and continue to be an inspiration. Each year, their support grows, and they demonstrate how their specific gifts have impacted the community.

Dynamic Duo At Tampa General Hospital
The successful pair of Tampa General Hospital’s John Couris president and CEO and Mark Runyon, executive vice president and CFO were recently recognized on the list by Becker’s Hospital Review 2022 as “Highly Successful CEOCFO Duos.”
“The relationship between a hospital’s CEO and CFO is instrumental to an organization’s growth and success, and Mark has proven over the last two and a half years that providing high quality care in a safe environment – and doing that in a financially sustainable way – is his primary concern. We are grateful for that,” said Couris. “Every day Mark encourages and empowers his team to think strategically and identify opportunities to innovate and improve processes and lower the cost of providing high quality health care.”
Couris’ and Runyon’s approaches to leading TGH balance each other. Couris focuses on big and bold ideas and Runyon’s grounded thinking and rationale help to make those ideas a reality. As noted by Becker’s Hospital Review,
“they push boundaries together and are always challenging each other and holding each other accountable.”
“John is always on the hunt for a way to shake things up to drive a more positive experience for healthcare consumers and our TGH team members,” said Runyon.

Celebrate The Florida Lifestyle
By Ronda M. Parag Interior Design by Potthast Design Photography by Bos ImagesPotthast Design approaches each project with the client at the center. From the initial engagement, and throughout the life of the project, the measure of collective collaboration is as engaged and immersive as the client wishes. The firm believes the greatest measure of success is found in the delight of the client. Some truly enjoy the design process, while others view interior design as a task to be completed.
Chelsea Potthast of Potthast Design believes the core of her success lies in her combined dedication to her craft, sound business practices, and her fundamental dedication to the persistent pursuit of excellence.
Potthast Design specializes in creative and distinctive design and functional space planning, with welldefined disciplines in place for implementing their projects.
For this particular project, Potthast wanted to fashion an imitable resortlike milieu for her clients at their waterfront home which would celebrate the Florida lifestyle, with a touch of whimsy experienced through color and pattern. The renovation and design challenge began with Potthast’s immersion understanding the clients’ lifestyle and desires for how they want to live.
Potthast’s hands-on approach alongside a team of outstanding architects and builders, together produce principled projects dedicated to perfection. Her formula is a proud combination of utilizing superior materials, thoughtful architecture and design, utmost comfort, and alas, supreme and refined luxury.
Her need to create perfect form and
function to maximize the space began with sourcing timeless and beautiful finishes that the family would enjoy for years to come.
She then began to develop the design of perfectly scaled casually glamourous furnishings. She fashioned custom rugs and sumptuous upholstery in shades of sand, soft aquamarine and bright blue, rich print and detailed
pattern that married ‘Old Florida’ with timeless modern. Radiant light fixtures shimmer and chandeliers illuminate the space, almost as if selected from the Queen’s jewel box.
Through close relationships with her loyal craftsmen and artisans, upholsterers, and suppliers, Potthast Design engineers their projects with exceptional construction finishes,
stunning plumbing fixtures, and innovative appliances and equipment. They hand-select and employ the highest quality materials and textiles to craft bespoke furnishings and light fixtures, curate extraordinary artwork and exceptional accessories, as well as fine linens and stunning tabletop items. A maximalist’s dream home came to fruition; sophisticated, elegant, yet livable and fun. The firm’s paramount attention to every and all detail is what makes working with Potthast Design a perfect match. M

Choosing A Private School Charting the Course
By Ronda M. ParagChoosing where to send your child to school can often be a great source of anxiety and a difficult decision for many parents. Private schools vary greatly in terms of their quality, offerings, culture and costs.
Parents must decide whether they want their children to attend a religious school. It usually is not hard for those parents that are religious, but for other parents, they still may chose a religious affiliated school for the values and character they are perceived to instill in the students. How many activities do you want offered at the school? A
school’s size often determines the types extracurricular actives they are able to offer. Location is another important factor to consider when choosing a school. Since transportation usually falls to the parents, the school should be near where you live or work.
METRO surveyed over 45 schools to receive the most up to date information on various components including total enrollment, average class size, accreditations, tuition and more. We’ve compiled all the information in a comprehensive chart for easy comparison. It’s a great place to begin your search.
It is easy to be overwhelmed when trying to decide where to send your children to school. Ultimately, after reviewing the many private school options and personal on-site visits, parents will be able to decide with confidence their choice for a private education.

Elevated Dining in a Tropical Oasis
It was certainly worth the wait. Long anticipated, the modern and luxurious EDITION Tampa opened it’s doors in late October. With seven food and beverage concepts at the hotel under the direction of Michelin star chef John Fraser, we had a chance to check out the casual dining concept Market with friends. Upon entering the lobby of the hotel, the tone is set with amazing design and luxurious feelings. All the plants transport you to a tropical oasis. Fraser says that he looks forward to being apart of the hotel’s vision through the food and beverage offerings. “With something for everyone during all parts of the day,” says Fraser.
Located on the right side of the lobby, Market makes the most of its corner spot, with an abundance of plants and greenery providing indoor and outdoor alfresco dining on Water Street that flows flawlessly into the interior of the restaurant. The bright and airy all-day dining Market features a
marble coffee and pastry bar, which sits adjacent to a casual dining space. The tables are fairly close together, so you soon become friends with the tables next to you. Our server was incredible and he offered suggestions of menu favorites, and was quick to bring us additional cocktails and food items.
Market’s menu has an Italian trattoria flair, with fresh pizzas, charcuterie, alongside light, healthy, casual, and ingredient-driven classics. Our server suggested a Spritz cocktail to start, so we tried the namesake MARKET made with Strawberry-basil infused Aperol and topped with Prosecco and The ROSE´ made with Grey Goose vodka, watermelon, elderflower, and topped with brut rosé. Both were sipped and savored.
We shared a variety of small plates including the Vidalia Onion Petal served with chili aioli, Rhode Island Calamari with lemon aioli, Buratta served atop
grilled beets, tomato jam with focaccia bread, and Tuna Tartare marinated with white beans and fennel. Everything was prepared to perfection and we enjoyed each dish. All the pasta is homemade, as well as all the bakery items available throughout the day at the coffee bar. We shared the Rigatoni with spicy pork rage topped with whipped ricotta and basil, and also the Truffles & Maitake Mushroom pizza. Perhaps the favorite was the Chopped Salad – so unexpected served de-constructed with arugula, mortadella, tomatoes, pasta, provolone, avocado and topped with red wine vinaigrette.
To me, no meal is complete without dessert and we selected the recommended chocolate mousse topped with ice cream and two ginger cookies topped with jelly. Sweet! And of course, if you know me an espresso martini!
Certainly, we all enjoyed the experience and will be back again soon. M
Discover the Queen’s City
Charlotte, North Carolina | By Ronda M. ParagEveryone knows in Florida that you have to go North to experience the South. I had the opportunity to travel for a quick four-day trip to experience the South in Charlotte, NC, known as the Queen’s City. Charlotte was so named in the 1768 by pro-British colonists who wanted to curry favor with England’s King George III by naming the new town after his wife, Queen Charlotte Sophia, originally of MecklenburgStrelitz, Germany. The county where Charlotte is located is Mecklenburg County after her majesty’s birthplace.
For those seeking an adventure, two must-do places include the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the U.S. National White Water Center. The NASCAR Hall of Fame, located just 20 miles from the Charlotte Motor Speedway, pays homage to the drivers and history of professional racing.
From viewing the current exhibit ICONS with 18 cars, to the history of the sport with hundreds of artifacts, don’t miss the “Race Week” racing simulator experience.
Fun for the entire family is a day at the U.S. National Whitewater Center. It’s
the largest man-made whitewater river and official Olympic Training site. From multiple zip lining courses to the guided whitewater rafting course, there is enough activity to keep everyone, regardless of skill level, entertained. There are various courses for stand-up paddle boarding and tandem kayaking, as well as 30 miles of trails for biking, walking and running in the beautiful 1,300 acres. If rock climbing is on your list, USNWC offer the largest outdoor climbing wall that goes to 30 feet.
For a delicious breakfast or brunch, don’t miss Amélie’s French Bakery & Café NODA. With three locations each offering their own unique whimsy, we went to the location in NODA and certainly wasn’t disappointed. The eclectic interior is Parisian-inspired from the black & white flooring to artwork hung from the walls and ceilings. French-inspired pastries on display looked all so tempting, it was hard to decide on just one. The menu offers soups, sandwiches and delicious baked goods.
Extra special was the spectacular
dinner at Supperland with co-owner Jamie Brown, who sat down with us to explain their concept and discuss their recent recognition in Bon-Appetite as one of the Best New Restaurants 2022 Located in a converted church, the restaurant menu is described as “Southern Steakhouse meets Church Potluck.” I call it delicious. From the starter of the Sweet Potato and Blue Cheese Dip to the Miso Macaroni and Cheese side and the Sunday Roast with Pickled Onions, our palettes were tantalized with flavors. A sweet finale of pint-sized pies and sundae’s are not to be skipped. Don’t miss this dining experience on your next travels to Charlotte.
Golf lovers will appreciate that Charlotte hosts the PGA Wells Fargo Championship each year at the Quail Hollow Club. I was fortunate to be in town as Charlotte hosted the Presidents Cup in September 2022 where the U.S. Team defeated the International Team for the ninth consecutive victory. There are plenty of great courses throughout the city for golfers to get out on a course.
A comfortable place to stay in the SouthPark area is the Hyatt Centric SouthPark. Located across from the Southpark Mall, the hotel is central to many of Charlotte’s top destinations. The
rooftop bar and restaurant Mizu serve up delicious craft cocktails including the Legent-Dary Old Fashioned and Rumming To the Sunset. The restaurant is inspired by the wood-fired flavors of Japan with
exceptionally delicious Asian and Southern inspired menu offerings.
We only scratched the surface, and need to return to Charlotte to discover more of its southern hospitality. M
