LAUREN “LOLO” MAYHEW Creative Talent Singer, DJ, Songwriter and Actress The pandemic brought Tampa native, Lauren Mayhew back to her roots and family. Mayhew is a talented DJ, singer and actress and now lives in Tampa. She has toured throughout the United States, South Africa, Belgium, Holland, Dubai and Tokyo as a singer and DJ. Her acting roles also include “CSI,” “Law and Order,” FOX’s “9-1-1,” NBC’s “Blacklist,” & most recently, CBS’s “FBI: Most Wanted.” She toured as an opening act for Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Destiny’s Child, and even opened up for Aerosmith at the Super Bowl. song is about love and hope. Sometimes nostalgia makes us cling to old loves, but the real adventure and love for life is found in embracing the unknown. METRO had a chance to catch up with Lolo recently and discover the process of working on the new song and what she does in her new role at Next Level Brands.
METRO: What does it mean to be the Musical Director? Lolo Mayhew: I not only run all the music during dinner, lunch, & brunch by producing highly, curated playlists that are specific and unique to Boulon and Union, but I also book all of the live entertainment and DJ talent Fridays and Saturdays. In addition, I work with the private events team to book top level talent for any private event. METRO: Tell us about the process of creating your new record. How long did it take and what is the inspiration? Lolo Mayhew: This song actually took about a year from the time it was conceptualized to the time that it was released. Part of the reason was that we were working across many different countries and time zones – USA (myself), Mexico (116db), Germany (DJ Miss Nine) for the artists. The mix/master engineer, Miklos Malek, is from Hungary, but lives in Amsterdam. I have been using him for over a decade. He’s a pro and his mixes are mint. And the label we ended up signing with – Candy Flip – is based in Colombia. Miss Nine and I originally met in New York performing together during #NFT week in NYC. We were performing at the same tech event for World Of Women. From there we started discussing ideas. I wrote the lyrics and melodies, and once she approved, I recorded them in my home studio in Tampa. From there I sent off the vocals to my mix/mastering engineer (Miklos) and he helped to get the song radio ready. At that point we sent the song out to meaningful labels for consideration for release. I had actually worked with Candy Flip before on a release called “Let’s Talk About You” with them and KHB Music. I really enjoyed the process and felt they’d be the perfect label to collaborate with for “The Other Side.” —— Ronda M. Parag

People typically strive to make good food choices. But due to costs, convenience or uncontrolled cravings, there may still be oversights, or overabundances, in their daily diets that impact the quality and quantity of what’s on a mealtime menu. Eating better leads to better health, but would you be even more inclined to tweak what you eat if the foods you choose could shield you from serious health issues like cancer, heart disease or hypertension? METROHome At Home
A Tropical Oasis With Relaxing Flair By Mary Lou Janson Interior Design: Lisa Gilmore Design Photography: Chris Restrepo, Penlight Media
A
nondescript exterior and undistinguished entryway leading to an interior marked by dark colors, a choppy floor plan and limited natural light served the family of four well, but left them longing for a more vacation-like lifestyle. By dramatically re-designing the home, inside and out, Lisa Gilmore, principal interior designer along with Nicole Maldonado, senior designer, both of Lisa Gilmore Design, catapulted the Venetian Isles waterfront residence from obscurity into an oasis. The updated home is now buoyed by bright colors, a free-flowing floor plan and various shapes, patterns and textures adorning walls, drapes, furnishings, flooring and fixtures that add tropical flair. “The family wanted their home to make them feel like they are on vacation, as well as, represent their love of travel, the arts and music,” said Gilmore. “The whole goal was for this to be relaxing, to offer that ‘ahhh’ experience you have while on vacation.” Originally the floor plan featured a centralized kitchen that obstructed views of the outdoors and created spaces that felt more cavelike than cozy.

Now, the layout lets the sun shine in and allows sight lines from the relocated kitchen, across the dining and living rooms, into the open-air, covered sitting room where the parents and two sons gather mornings to start their day together, and through to the backyard swimming pool and boat slip. “We took that vacation mindset and ran with it,” Gilmore added. “It’s a home that welcomes relaxation as well as entertaining friends and family.” The former front door was recessed within the street-facing walls and further masked by a metal screen door. Extending the threshold outwards to make it flush with the garage created a wide covered porch that frames custom double doors and accommodates outdoor furnishings. Converting the exterior from a subdued shade to a bright white nicely contrasts with blue skies, green foliage and turquoise Bahama window shutters. The build-out also added enough new square footage for a laundry room, walk-in pantry, powder room and music lounge. Sea-worthy shades of blues and greens now enliven the shower walls in the boys’ bathroom. A soft shade of blue coats the kitchen cabinets overlooking natural stone counters. A surfboard-shaped table, locally made by Buckmanhaus, hosts family meals while members are seated on woven seagrass chairs and a built-in bench upholstered in a deep turquoise fabric. In addition to Caribbean-inspired influences, Gilmore also introduced architectural elements discovered while at an art gallery in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Those are showcased in the living room’s adobe-style fireplace and the music lounge’s sculptural bookcase defined by soft lines, curves and cutouts where musical instruments, including the husband’s guitars, wood carvings crafted by a grandparent and a camera collection are beautifully displayed. “Everything was carefully selected with artesian quality and handmade uniqueness in mind,” Gilmore noted. ARTO handmade cement tiles accent the floors. A mural and musical instrument painted by St. Petersburg artist Chade Mize transform an office wall and piano into whimsical works of art. Quirky, perky touches are also found in crayon-like drawings on drapes, an exotic cedar cypress wood door inlaid with hand-selected colored glass panes

and chairs from the office, music lounge, plus the piano bench, that boast far from boring cool, colorful, fun fabrics. Luxe touches that lend to the home’s resort-like luster include the living room coffee table carved from mango wood and designed with a bone inlay and highly textured, natural wallpaper in the powder room that echoes a patchwork pattern. Behind — not above — the sink is a distressed antique mirror with sconces mounted on its surface. Small room with big “wow” factor. “We weren’t afraid to go crazy and have some fun with this,” said Gilmore. “The clients fully trusted myself and the team to guide their vision. They trusted the process and now they have a home where they can breathe and have family time.” M

Florida Keys Inspired Renovations By Ronda M. Parag Photography by Crystal Bos, Bos images

reating a more relaxed Florida Keys inspired office and bath was the design challenge facing Cruz Interiors, Inc. It required creativity and some adaptation, but the end result was just want the client desired. “We had already done some extensive work at the home, including a remodel of the kitchen and bathrooms, but these two areas were left for revamping,” says Christina Cruz, Principal Designer at Cruz Interiors, Inc. “The previous design of the office and bathroom was dated and didn’t function the way the client needed. The space required a total makeover to fit in with the rest of the home’s new found style.” A favorite getaway for the client, the Florida Keys served as an elevated inspiration. A cool, calm palette set the tone for a relaxed, peaceful space, and just a touch of glossy finish inside the powder was enough to complement the contemporary style in the rest of the home. In the office, a soft blue hue was infused through the use of cabinets and a beautiful custom built-in lined with textured wall covering. Natural elements of drift wood and stone brought in the oasis-like feel with the use of accessories and added strategically placed watercolor artwork with a seascape painting centered on the built-in. Layers of light were added so that the client could adjust for everyday use, tasks and ambient lighting. Lighting included a gorgeous art light from Circa illuminating the art in the built-in and a Flower and mirror drum chandelier shines overhead. A rolling desk chair allows comfort and ease of movement, along with a swivel guest chair with addition boasting performance fabric ensures company is accommodated with seating in the office.

One family pet member is certainly enjoying the extra seating, Dalí, the family dog. The stone top is a durable and hardworking quartz, while the cabinets conceal files, a printer and a smaller drawer for office items. All the office necessities, conveniently located, but well concealed. For the powder bath, Cruz Interiors began with surrounding the entire room in floor to ceiling wainscoting painted in SW origami white. The neutral soft white color empowers the other materials to shine. The illuminated mirror on the wall may be independently operated allowing for a soft glow, or it can be paired with gorgeous Mitzi wall sconces in an oversized scale. Most notably in the powder bath, Cruz Interiors worked with a natural Calacatta Vagli marble stone for the countertop. The addition of drama (and support structure) with the use of a large mitered edge and an exaggerated backsplash, paired with the glossy cabinets underneath will add design to delight guests. The dark color picks up on the black marble pencil that were inlaid into the marble cut tiles on the floor. A perfectly paired combination. On the opposite wall, Cruz used a tall, but shallow storage cabinet to fill a strange void, and it created a perfect place for art, creating a balance in the room. “The final product gave spectacular new life to the home, and the client was over the moon thrilled,” adds Cruz. S
eeking relaxation, rest and rejuvenation less than two hours away from Tampa Bay? For a great family escape without having to get on a plane, consider a stay at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort, a AAA Five Diamond rated Resort. It’s a convenient home base while visiting one of the Disney parks or as a total escape for a luxurious getaway. From fine dining to drifting in the lazy river, adventure awaits around every corner. We recently experienced the resort for a weekend and I will say, I was not ready to leave after the two days of eating, golfing and relaxing. We enjoyed a spacious one bedroom Park View Deluxe suite that has recently undergone a redesign showcasing soft hues of taupe, grey, soft blush and mossy green. The suite offers a spacious living area, three-quarter bath, separate bedroom and bathroom with deep-soaking bathtub, and expansive terrace. Designed by Parker Torres Design of Boston, the lead designer, Kristen Emory says the goal was to stimulate

the senses while evoking a feeling of tranquility. “The design features richly layered details, and reflects an understated elegance,” notes Emory. “With organic shapes and warm, calming tones inspired by nature, the overall feel is modern, but also residential.” “Returning back to the Resort after a day of fun and stepping into a Park View Deluxe Suite, the overall feel of it is truly relaxing. The colours are calming, and the layout is perfect for families, providing a well-designed space to unwind and enjoy their time together,” says Thomas Steinhauer, Regional Vice President and General Manager of Four Seasons Resort Orlando. The property boasts a five-acre waterpark, plus a separate adult-only pool. Private cabanas are available at the quiet, all adult pool overlooking the pond. Or reserve a cabana surrounding the lazy river, that makes it ideal to keep an eye on the kids, while being shaded from the sun. The Resort is the ideal playground for kids and teens with their own private game rooms and Kids for All Seasons
program for ages 4-12. Activities include beach volleyball, basketball, a video gaming centre, outdoor movie nights on the Starstruck screen, and so much more. We dined at the Michelin-starred Capa Steakhouse located on the 17th floor of the Resort. The service was impeccable and we tried the recommendations from our server. From the Tapas section, we had Datiles — bacon wrapped dates and the Croquetas. Each Spanish-influenced dish was as delicious as it was beautifully presented. For our entree, we shared the 32-ounce bone-in Porterhouse Steak. We finished with the Churros De Madrid and the Pastel De Almendras Y Aceite De Oliva — an olive oil cake with mixed berries sorbet and lemon cream. Next, we dined at at Ravello, which serves up a Modern Italian menu with selection of Italian specialties and housemade pastas and pizza. A familiar and talented former Tampa Chef, Fabrizio Schenardi leads the Resort’s culinary team as Executive Chef. We shared three different pasta dishes, including the decadent house specialty of Veal Ravioli. M

A Culinary Adventure With Mediterranean Flair Predalina | By Ronda M. Parag
I
t all starts with family from the name, to the menu, to the beautifully designed interior. Predalina, the latest concept from Oxford Commons Hospitality Company, pays homage to Blake Casper and Allison Casper Adams’ great grandmother, Predalina Oliveira. Located in downtown Tampa’s Water Street District, Predalina officially opened earlier this summer. We were invited to the pre-opening, and are excited for everyone to try this gorgeous new restaurant that celebrates the flavors of the Mediterranean, and offers a menu filled with seafood options. Offering both a spacious indoor dining room and a shaded outdoor patio, there are options depending on weather, creating unique dining experiences. The interior design and architecture was a collaboration of Oxford Design Studio, Smith Dalia Architects, and NAINOA Interior Design & Architecture. The curated cocktail menu offers spirited

selections including the Predalina Water that is great to sip on in the expansive bar area. The signature cocktail is made with Ketel Botanical Peach and Orange Blossom, Salers Apertif, Apricot, Citrus, Pinot Grigio. Another cocktail offering is the Easy Read made with Hendricks Gin, Thyme Liqueur, Kleos Mastiha, and topped with a choice of Cucumber Tonic, Sparkling Lemon or Blood Orange Ginger. I had the Blood Orange Ginger and its quickly become my favorite cocktail. Get started with a selection from the raw bar offering the freshest selection of oysters from both coasts, and yellow fin tuna, smoked hamachi and fluke crudo. A signature starter that comes highly recommended is the Crudité & Pita. It’s small dishes of hummus, zaalouk, spicy whipped feta, htipiti served with warm pita, and raw veggies including peppers, carrots and cucumbers depending on what is in season. For a salad that can be a meal in itself,

try the Horiatiki made with Persian cucumbers, tomatoes, red onion, kalamata olives, large chunks of aged feta, oregano, and topped with a sherry vinegar. For a light dish from the Mezze section of the menu, the Zucchini Chips are crispy served with feta, charred lemon and aleppo. A mild white fish dish is the Sea Bream Spetsiota served with tomato, castelvetrano olives, extra virgin olive oil, and fresh herbs. One of my favorites was the Lobster Skewer with large chunks of lobster skewered between fennel, vesuvius tomato, and served with aleppo garlic butter for dipping. Great for sharing with friends is the Salt Crust Branzino. Served flaming tableside, the dish is served with hearth-roasted tomato, chermoula, and ladolemono. Save room for a sweet finish with a recommended Phyllo Crunch or Loukoumades — Greek donuts with side dips of dark chocolate, salted caramel or meyer lemon glaze. M
