Gandharvan
Euphoria is a proven outfit headed by Subbash SBC, that had organised Indian events successfully and its latest offering is the Gandharva Sandhya in Sydney and other metropolis of the land of Oz. The musical tour of Yesudas and his troupe of 7 was a much hyped and highly publicised news item in our local papers and media for the past two months. Yet people of Kerala origin were not rushing to buy tickets for the show held on 23.8.14, to the level one would anticipate normally. Partly because Yesu had been here to perform in quick succession in prestige SEPTEMBER 2014
venues like Sydney Opera House, which were all packed to rafters then. The last two Opera House shows were brilliant to say the least and those who attended raved about them. However the enigma that Yesu is, pulled a decent crowd in the Sydney Town Hall show also. From the moment he landed here on August 21 he kept moving at a hectic pace in activities mostly relating to the show presentation and other commitments, which included long music sessions with the team. He held a Press conference on 21 August at Kasi Restaurant, which was a treat to the scribes. Unlike the usual one worded question answer format especially to tasteless questions of no significance, the interviewers this time were on the ball and asked very pertinent questions relating to music. Yesudas answered them all in a fair bit of detail way. It was an educative session to me to say the least. He spoke on music sadhka, dedication to learning practice, the hardships he

In his infallible wisdom, God Brahma the creator, and part of the Trinity produced a life preserving Sun, a soothing moon and a melody oozing Gana Gandharvan, all one of its kind. We see the sun and moon on a daily basis, but see the Ganagandharvan only sparsely. His voice is part of the air we breathe nonstop. The significance of 23 August was seeing him in person and listening to his melodious musical strains.

went through in his earlier life with stumbling blocks cropping up everywhere, and on a personal level spoke with feeling about devotion to teachers who generally try to instil in you the subject matter of music, the way it should be done in performances. He spoke of the most import lines of significance he ever sang “Jathi bhedam mathadwasham penned by Narayana Guru. Being his first recording he detailed how it helped him to go forward in his musical journey. I noticed of late some changes in his communication method; he now opens up his mind and speaks with no reservation. On 22 August, patrons of his music caravan were extended an open invitation by the tour promoters Subhash Balakrishnan and Kasi Restaurant owner to have dinner at Kasi Restaurant at Annandale, where we could avail of a chance to meet Yesudas, Vijay and Swetha and talk to them briefly, with photo opportunities and a good feed too. He came with Vijay and Swetha taking time off from the rehearsal they were engaged in, to attended a miniature photo session and bid us good bye. I am happy that the trio made it a point to visit their waiting fans for a brief while interrupting the rehearsal.
Thamara poykayil etc.). I am aware Malayalees were not overtly supportive and forthcoming to buy tickets in spite of the hard yakka put in by ticket vendors which included me too in a humble way. I wish to laud the best efforts by a very hard working Subbash SBC who seemed worried about the lack of support of the Malayalee community of Sydney in particular to help him to successfully present this high grade show. True he worked very hard and honestly to make the show a success. He did his job properly, and to his optimum capacity. Organisers can go only to a limit in organising and have to keep an eye on the finance issues too; mind you these are big budgeted efforts. About the selection of songs (which has nothing to do with Subbash), I understand two of his requests (Pacha panam thathe and Ende kannanu karuppu niram) did not get a place in the song parade. Winding my way back home I agreed to myself that it was the day of Tamil songs and not that of Malayalam songs. Hope for the best next time. It is true nobody can please everybody on matters like this.
I like to voice my appreciation on the singing ability of the young duo of Vijay and Swetha. They have improved remarkably since their last visit, not only in the singing part but the stage presence and mannerisms. They look more comfortable there and are able to get the crowd on their side from the word go. I am sure this young duo will go higher and higher in years to come. We were all proud of the way they sang.

Now let us dwell on the all-important 'GANDHARWA SANDHYA' show. Yesudas had announced earlier that his troupe is here to sing for us, but he did not expect us to take part in singing... Ha ha! He promised to sing an assortment of old and new songs in a range of languages and also to endeavour his best to please us. We arrived at the venue with the threatening rain clouds hovering over our heads, that may break lose any moment into a downpour drenching us. It began drizzling fairly heavily, but it did not last for long, though we were completely wet. The show started late as usual. In the limited time available 28 songs were sung by the trio of Yesudas, Vijay and Swetha. I earnestly hoped to hear the old melodies that made Yesu an enigma, but it did not materialize in full on this occasion. The 7 piece orchestra in full vigour did a fine accompaniment job.
Speaking to various real critics and arm chair mob, I came across divided opinions. Some well-respected melodies found a place only in the medley as bits (Thenum vayambum,Manikya veenayum, Ende swapnathin

hildhood memories come and go like the summer breezes, slipping away as quickly as they come. As I tried to hold on to them, I was blown away time and time again to a village called Kozhencheri, situated somewhere in the middle of Kerala. Kozhencheri of my childhood was just a sleepy village where you could see people toiling on their land under the hot sun. You could hear ox carts creaking, cattle lowing while multitudes of crows screeched as they busily engaged in their scavenging job. Nothing of importance happened here. But we children lived in our own world of great adventure and mystery through the yarns and tales we used to hear from the storytellers of Kozhencheri. Besides human beings, this idyllic village was also the home of three invisible and mysterious spirits. The most fearsome was the Yekshi who was a blood sucking evil ‘she vampire’ and the other two were called Enampeechi and Kuttychathan. They were playful and naughty spirits who harassed, taunted and stole from people at random in the cover of the night. The drunkards of Kozencheri after heavy drinking at the toddy shop, loved to brag about their bizarre encounters with the deadly yekshi. Boys at school made up stories of their adventures with Kuttychathan and Enampeechi to impress fellow students. After one summer vacation, when the senior boys told

me that they actually sighted the Yekshi on one of the trees in our property, my knees wobbled and I was terrorised and almost fainted. Since that day, I lived in a world of nightmare filled with Yekshi terror. Apparently, the Yekshi lived on a big tree called “Pala” (in Malayalam) at the front of our property. The massive tree trunk was very tall with all the branches spread out at the very top. Lots of birds lived among the branches and at night their raucous twittering would continue for a long time. By morning, the base of the tree as well as the road near by would be covered by tiny white flowers that fell from the tree, the morning air filled with their heady perfume. The tree had a huge hollow at the very top of the trunk and the mysterious resident was none other than the Yekshi! No wonder the school children as they passed the Pala tree on their way to school would run for their lives screaming “ Ayeeo, Yekshi, Yekshi! “. The Yekshi would come out of her abode only in the darkness of the night. Many people had sighted her walking along lonely roads, always dressed in a long white loose garment. She was hauntingly beautiful with red piercing eyes and waist length hair covering her back, which was totally hollow. She would approach lonely travellers on the road from behind and would ask for favours. The survival rule was not to look back and respond
to her. If you break this rule she would embrace you tightly and suck blood from your throat till you drop dead!! Of all the trees in Kozencheri how could God let this evil vampire live on our beautiful tree, I said to myself. When the Yekshi started terrorising me by appearing in my dreams, I begged my mother to get somebody to cut the tree down. She was horrified when she heard about my fear. Seeing my tears, she assured me that I am a child of God and he would never allow Yekshi or any other creatures to harm me. Yet the Yekshi fear would not leave me. Then one rainy day the miracle happened. My family was sitting on the front veranda and chatting with an uncle who was visiting us. The monsoon rain kept on pouring in torrents with interludes of lightening and thunder. With in the blink of an eye a sudden lightening struck our Pala tree and it got split into two and fell to the ground with such force that our house shook. We fell off our chairs; but managed to scramble up, stood speechless and stared at the fallen tree. Everyone agreed that if it was not for the Pala tree the lightening would have struck us, the tree saved our lives. But I truly believed that it was an answer from God to my prayers. But the Yekshi saga would not end. After the lightening destroyed Yekshi’s home among SEPTEMBER 2014

the Pala tree, people sighted a furious yekshi flying off to some mysterious destination with a boy dangling from her clutches. He was identified as a beggar whom everyone called “ Buppy boy” (toothless boy) as all his front teeth were missing. Apparently he was sleeping in front of a shop veranda and was an easy target for the agitated and evil Yekshi. The next day during lunch break at school some boys came running with few fresh bones, which they claimed to have fallen from the sky after the Yekshi made a meal out of poor Buppy boy! Yes, the beggar boy had departed from this world in a gruesome way to meet up with his creator!! The news ripped through my heart, as I knew Buppy boy well. He was a familiar face who used to come for his begging rounds every Saturday around noon. He used to announce his arrival by singing a melody from a popular Tamil or Malayalam
film, in a loud nasal voice and no wonder people yelled and screamed at him for disturbing their afternoon nap. But I felt sorry for him and used to throw extra coins in his begging bowl behind my mother’s back. While I narrated the latest episode of the Yekshi and the beggar boy to my mother, I was shocked to see her losing her patience with me and a stern lecture followed. “ Our butcher lives not far from your school and he buries the carcass of goats and cows which he slaughters for our meat supply, in the ground. It is a hunting ground for stray dogs that get hold of few bones now and then to feast on and scatter them around. The bones which the boys picked up came from this source and not from the beggar boy’s skeleton”, mother insisted. “ To be a brave girl when ever you hear a story, try to use your brain instead of your imagination to make your own decision whether
to believe in a story or not”, her advice continued. It did make good sense to me and I decided to follow her advice from that day onwards. No one in Kozhencheri ever saw Buppy boy since then and his fate haunted me. I wanted to believe that he was alive and kicking and probably moved to another place after getting into trouble with the local police for petty theft. While travelling on buses I used to look out through the window on to the never-ending stretches of dusty roads for a glimpse of a skinny tall boy with the toothless grin, singing his happy songs to camouflage his sad life. Some times in the stillness of the night, his favourite song “ Amme pashikithe, thai pashikithe” (Mother, I am so hungry, mother, please feed me) came floating by, transporting me to a far away place where my childhood memories are still alive.
CURRENT AFFAIRS
YOUNGEST BISHOP IN AUSTRALIA
TO LEAD CATHOLICS IN SYDNEY ccording to 2011 National census, Catholics are the largest religious denomination representing 25.3% of the Australian population. Among the seven catholic Arch dioceses in the country, Sydney is considered as the major Arch diocese in Australia and consequently the Arch bishop of Sydney plays a pivotal role in leading the Catholic Church in Australia. On 18 September, Pope Francis appointed Antony Fisher as the 9th Arch Bishop of Sydney, succeeding Cardinal Pell who has taken up a senior position in the Vatican. Four years ago when he became the Bishop of Parramatta at 49, he was the youngest Bishop in the country. Arch Bishop Fisher who is active in the social media with a face book page and twitter account, is a modern, down to earth and charismatic leader who is expected to inspire and lead the Catholic church in Australia in the right direction as it is going through a very difficult period, due to the massive allegations of sex abuse by its clergy. It is expected that the new Arch Bishop will cooperate fully with the Royal commission and state commissions investigating institutional child abuse and take remedial action so that such atrocities will not be committed in the future and the perpetrators will not go unpunished. Antony Fisher was born in Lanecove, went to school in Lakemba and had his University education in Sydney. He has a Doctorate in Bio Ethics from Oxford University and was a successful lawyer before joining the DominiArch Bishop Fisher can order to become a

Jacob Thomas priest. He is the founder of John Paul II Institute of Marriage and family in Melbourne and has successfully coordinated world youth day in Sydney in 2008. Bishop Antony Fisher was Cardinal Pell’s preferred candidate to become the Arch Bishop of Sydney. He also had the advantage of being a local as compared to Arch Bishop Coleridge who was another possible candidate. As the leader of the major Arch diocese of Sydney, he could become a Cardinal in the future following the footsteps of his predecessor, Cardinal Pell. At his first press conference as Arch Bishop of Sydney, he expressed shame and sorrow for child abuse by clergy and for the church’s disgraceful abandonment of victims and declared that there will be “no excuses, no cover ups”. The new Arch Bishop unlike his predecessor, has thereby admitted and recognised that the church in the past has covered up sex abuse by clergy, protecting the perpetrators instead of the victims, confirming what has been revealed to the Royal commission. This approach is considered as a step in the right direction and is being applauded by the media and the victims of child abuse as well as human rights activists. He was humble enough to admit that the Catholic Church was going through a period of “well deserved public scrutiny and humiliation and self examination”. He expressed the hope that the church would come out of this as a” purified and humbler church”. Arch Bishop Fisher is a very friendly and liberal person, who sounds simple even when he talks about serious Catholic dogma. His resolve to continue ordinary pastoral work of a priest in spite of his enormous responsibility of managing the major Archdiocese of Sydney is seen as a clear sign of his humility and piety. He is a strong advocate of religious harmony. This was clearly manifested when he met with Muslim leaders immediately after he became Arch Bishop, to discuss about terrorism raids that have alienated some segments of the Muslim community in Australia. By expressing his sincere desire to reach out to them, he has demonstrated his ability and willingness to contribute positively to the religious harmony of multicultural Sydney and Australia.

The Rock

“Ding, Ding, and Ding”… There goes the final bell. Today is the last day of the school year. I watch, with a heavy heart, as the students pile up near the gate. It will be at least two months before I hear the sounds of laughter, and see the kids playing in my courtyards again. A million thoughts rush into my mind. I think about the students. I now wait to see them grow up and become young men. I wish the ‘Year Twelves’ a happy and long life, as they leave me.

I remember that day, like it was yesterday when ‘Edmund Rice’ chose to build his first school on me. That was almost a century ago. I was a young and vibrant rock. I remember all the native wildlife crowding around me. The ‘Christian Brothers’ were the first human beings I had ever seen. They looked like angels, in their heavenly white robes. They built a chapel on me, and then came the boarding school, the classrooms, and many other things. I remember the first time I heard the laughter of the children. My heart was filled with joy when they played around on my back; studied on my head and competed on my lap. All these seem like they happened just yesterday. I have been here for many years, watching the children grow up, with love towards nature, and care for others. I will still be here for many more years, as the generations pass.
