As If It Was You
WITH HEAD TURNING, SHOCKING VISUALS, AND RAW, EMOTIONAL COMPOSITIONS, NAI’A IS NOT JUST MAKING MUSIC, BUT ART. One of Music Forward’s recent LGBTQ+ Emerging Artist Award Winners, Nai’s is embodying queerness in music.
In 2020 Nai’a started to hone his skills as a self-produced artist through masterclasses with Grammy award winning producer Mike Mangini (The Jonas Brothers, AJR, Baha Men),
and platinum selling songwriter Coley O’Toole (We The Kings). That year Nai’a released his first works.
After posting a video at the piano in 2022, Nai’a’s “London” found its first audience. With over 100 thousand streams across platforms and nearly half a million plays on TikTok, “London” was his first big success. But Nai’a was just beginning. In his hometown, he cultivated his first live show at a local church. Quickly, Nai’a
went on to perform his original music internationally with shows in Las Vegas (AREA 15), and London, England (Breaking Sound). Now living in New York City, he has performed at almost every local music venue (Rockwood Music Hall, The Delancey, Berlin Under Ave A).
As If It Was You, Nai’a’s second album, was released on September 13th, and includes new intimate ballads that will make you melt. Listen on Spotify, Apple Music or Amazon Music.

READ THE GUNCLE ABROAD
By Steven Rowley
STEVEN ROWLEY IS THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF FOUR NOVELS AND THE WINNER OF THE 22ND THURBER PRIZE FOR AMERICAN HUMOR. The Guncle Abroad is the second in the series.
Patrick O’Hara is back. It’s been five years since his summer as his niece Maisie and nephew Grant’s caretaker after their mother’s passing. The kids are back in Connecticut with their dad, and Patrick has relocated to New York to remain close by and relaunch his dormant acting career. After the run of his second successful sit-com comes to a close, Patrick feels on top of the world… professionally. But some things have had to take a back seat. Looking down both barrels at fifty, Patrick is single again after breaking things off with Emory. But at least he has a family to lean on. Until that family needs to again lean on him.
When Patrick’s brother, Greg, announces he’s getting remarried in Italy, Maisie and Grant are not thrilled. Patrick feels drawn to take the two back under his wing. As they travel through Europe on their way to the wedding, Patrick tries his best to help them understand love, much as he once helped them comprehend grief. But when they arrive in Italy, Patrick is overextended managing a groom with cold feet; his sister, Clara, flirting with guests left and right; a growing rivalry with the kids’ charming soon-to-be-launt (lesbian aunt), and two moody young teens trying to adjust to a new normal, all culminating in a disastrous rehearsal dinner.
Can Patrick save the day? Will teaching the kids about love help him repair his own love life? Can the change of scenery help Patrick come to terms with finally growing up? Gracing the page with his signature blend of humor and heart, Steven Rowley charms with a beloved story about the complicated bonds of family, love, and what it takes to rediscover yourself, even at the ripe age of fifty.

THE BEAUTY OF BURLESQUE MISS TOSH
THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, VOSS EVENTS, RESPONSIBLE FOR STAGE SHOWS LIKE RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE WERQ THE WORLD TOUR AND LOS ANGELES’ VAULT SPEAKEASY, TRANSFORMS 26,000 SQUARE FEET AT 548 WEST 22ND STREET IN NEW YORK CITY INTO A BURLESQUE HOLIDAY FANTASY, BOTH FANCIFUL AND SENSUAL, FOR ITS FOURTH ANNUAL SANTA’S SECRET. One of the show’s headliners is internationally acclaimed burlesque star, Miss Tosh, who returns to the show hot off the heels of a multishow run in Los Angeles. She is the queen of glitz and glamour who is challenging the norms of burlesque by promoting inclusivity and diversity. Known as the LGBTQ + Glambassador, she proudly promotes her queer style and sensibility, fighting stereotypes along the way. She also uses the art form and celebrates sexuality as a form of women empowerment.
Burlesque became prevalent in the United States in the late 1800s, first introduced in the 1860s by a British dance troupe. The women were seen as fearless and they turned the tables on the upper class using high glamour, singing, scandalous humor, and dancing to comment on the elite’s social behaviors. Miss Tosh comes from that culture, she didn’t just come into the art form, she was born into it. Entertainment runs in her veins.
BY ALEXANDER RODRIGUEZ
I come from a rich lineage of burlesque and vaudeville performers on both my mother’s and father’s sides. My greatgreat-grandmother, Maisie Evans, was an acrobatic performer and burlesque dancer who toured the country during the 1800s and early 1900s with her big band and Acro partner, who would wear a striped swimsuit and handlebar mustache. She even graced the Globe Theater in Los Angeles where I produced my show “Beauty of Burlesque” for many years until the theater sadly shut down in February 2024.
On my mother’s side, my great-greataunt, Betty Healey, was married to Ted Healey, the founder of the Three Stooges. Bettie made a huge impact on American comedy through film, as well as the vaudeville, and Burlesque theaters. She was born to my great-great-grandmother Gracie St. Claire, who was a renowned vaudeville performer in the mid-1800s.
You could say that my family has been woven into the fabric of Los Angeles and Hollywood since the very beginning. I feel incredibly fortunate to carry on the traditions of vaudeville and Burlesque in today’s contemporary society.
Miss Tosh would begin her journey into the world of Burlesque, inspired by the artists around her, and by those artists who came before her.
My first exposure to Burlesque came through images of my relatives, but it truly transformed when my dance mentor, Debbie Allen, shared videos of Josephine Baker performing topless in Paris. It was the first time I witnessed a woman so liberated and celebrated for her sensual artistry, and I found it enchanting and beautiful. From that moment, I was hooked.
I was also captivated by photographs of Sally Rand, a legendary feather fan dancer. I feel incredibly fortunate to have performed in the same theaters where she graced the stage, and I’ve had the pleasure of becoming friends with her descendants. They’ve shared some fascinating stories about the remarkable Sally Rand, who was not just a performer but also a savvy businesswoman well ahead of her time, performing her famous fan dance well into her 80s.
When she was 18, Tosh moved to Chicago to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. There she would hone her fashion skills as a fierce designer, earning scholarships and
awards, including a from Swarovski Crystals for her excellence in design & pattern making. It was also during that time that the burlesque bug would bite, courtesy of the queer community.
I became friends with the local drag scene, which played a pivotal role in my artistic journey. My dear friend, the late JoJo Baby, an incredible performance artist and dollmaker, along with my friend Sissy Spastik, took me under their wing and encouraged me to create my own act.
In the iconic queer bar Berlin, I created my very first burlesque performance, which remains one of my most famous acts called “Peeling.” In this act, I wear a tuxedo and dramatically remove a banana from my pants, peeling it and offering it to a special guest in the audience with a very suggestive champagne pop finale. It’s definitely one of my most beloved acts since I created it the year I came out. I’ve had the pleasure of performing it all around the world for 14 years now and enjoying every moment of it!
Burlesque is not just about the time on stage for Miss Tosh. The actual performance is a testament to her entire life as an artist. What you see onstage is a culmination of blood, sweat, and tears.
What I love about burlesque is that it’s a performance art form full of creative potential, where the possibilities are truly endless. On the surface, it appears glamorous, but beneath that veneer lies the hard work of real artists—building, sewing, and creating every element of the performance. This includes everything from creating music and choreographing routines to designing props and costumes, crafting stories and scripts, and infusing humor and structure into the acts. Burlesque is about transformation, entrepreneurship, branding, marketing, and even integrating technology into performance. It serves as a vessel for my creativity, allowing me to explore and express myself without being pigeonholed in any way. There’s also something quite human about Burlesque. I give the audience permission to relish their sensuality on a human level, which is an experience that connects us all. Through this relationship I have with the audience, I feel free to express myself, and I am incredibly fortunate to have this opportunity.
Having fought my way through the ups and downs of life to embrace my creativity, I am filled with gratitude every time I step on stage. It’s a privilege to share my art and
I COME FROM A RICH LINEAGE OF BURLESQUE AND VAUDEVILLE PERFORMERS ON BOTH MY MOTHER’S AND FATHER’S SIDES.”
connect with audiences in such a meaningful way.
Typically, burlesque is geared towards straight men, enticed by the tease and beauty of the female performers. As a queer artist, Miss Tosh challenges the norms of sexuality and gender. As an audience member, you are captivated and enticed, regardless of how you identify. But her journey as a Glambassador did not come without its bumps.
When I began performing Burlesque, there were hardly any openly gay Burlesque performers in the public eye. At that time, the most iconic queer stars were in TV talk shows. I admired their journey, but I couldn’t
quite relate to them, especially when it came to my version of femininity. I absolutely love and adore the feminine expression I found in burlesque—it’s glamorous yet strong, embodying a rebellious ownership of body and identity that truly inspired me.
I started my journey, blissfully unaware of how cruel people can be, especially those who wield fame and power. I quickly learned that who I am and the message I wanted to share felt like a threat to many heterosexual women and men in the industry. They seemed to have built their careers on seducing famous men, while I came in and challenged the purpose and meaning behind
building a career in burlesque. I have always committed to being myself and relying on my own hard work to build a career. I see now it gave queer people permission to own their expression, turning it into a form of liberation rather than just a way to attract the male gaze—especially for gay and queer performers and patrons.
Burlesque in the United States started to decline in the 1940s as the country was recovering from World War II and the Great Depression. But the art would remain part of the culture and because of younger generations fascinated with vintage styles and dance, it would never go away.
It has had a major reboot courtesy of pop culture (remember Cher’s movie?) and a desire to celebrate classic sexuality through dance.
Burlesque theaters have always been places both men and women could patronize, which is something very unique when you think of erotic art and how it is consumed historically. At the turn of the century women were just starting to leave their homes without suitors and making their own choices and a lot of these early liberated experiences happened within the Burlesque theaters. Yes, the shows were originally to entertain the male gaze, but I do think over time they turned in favor of
women in their feminine power.
But what I absolutely love about contemporary society today is the incredible creativity, diversity, and humanity being shared, not just within the Burlesque community but also among the audiences. Today you can find a Burlesque show in every major city around the globe! During my travels, I’m continually stunned and impressed that this art form has endured for hundreds of years, remaining a vital part of our entertainment history as humanity.
Sex, satire, and the expression of the body have always fascinated people, whether they’re watching or performing. I believe that now, more than ever, we need this kind of show to voice our truths, connect with audiences, break the fourth wall, and share glimmers of inspiration with one another.
Being openly queer isn’t just about making a statement for Miss Tosh. Her queer identity just adds a sensibility and texture to her acts, whether the audience knows it or not. Onstage, she also plays with gender roles, playing with the energies of personalities like Marilyn Monroe and Marlene Dietrich.
On the surface, I want people to be entertained, and I take immense pride in making my performances visually stunning. The showmanship, the costumes, and the props are all created with intention and skill. However, at the root of what I do, I aim to make social statements through my performance and storytelling, telling a queer narrative from my perspective. I always perform from a position of strength and queer power.
When I tell sapphic stories in my work, they are authentically reflective of how I live and love in my life. I’m not playing a character on stage; I am an amplified expression of my true essence as a woman who loves women. I feel like in history, queer stories have been far too few, and I hope that through my performance art, I can share my own with the world.
Humor and satire play a huge role in Burlesque and definitely in my work. There’s a sense of connection I create with the audience; even if they can’t fully relate to my story, they can connect with the warmth and invitation to participate in the fantasy I’m painting. Whether I’m drawing from my own fantasies or true-life stories,
I often wonder, “What if the old Hollywood starlet was a lesbian icon?” and in embracing that, I become the role model I never had, moving through the world in that way.
If you have had the honor of seeing her perform, you know there is a magnetic energy the minute the light hits her. Her acts are masterfully put together, and she takes the audience on a ride. What is her creative process in presenting a new performance?
Instead of glamorizing the victim, I reclaim the power, and, in turn, he falls victim and I reveal my nude body, knife in hand. It’s my revenge fantasy, reclaiming power for women who have historically been the targets and victims in famous films.
Then there’s my Christmas act, where I reimagine the song, “Santa Baby,” as a sapphic love story. Instead of wanting to be seduced by material gifts, I’d rather have Santa’s wife for Christmas! I love weaving these whimsical, weird, fun, and silly stories into my performances, which adds a layer of humor and creativity to the stage.
Her audiences are diverse. Gay, straight, in between, old, young, cis, trans, they all come together. By the end of an evening with Miss Tosh, everyone is united in laughter, applause, and a feeling of belonging. This is the future of Burlesque.
By definition, Burlesque means comedic satire, and I believe society needs more diverse voices when it comes to expressing how we feel about the world. It serves as a healthy way to make political, creative, and social statements, all of which resonate with the body. Burlesque is a beautiful creative outlet that allows people to share their stories, make impactful statements, and even rebel. We need to hear more stories from as many kinds of perspectives possible so we have a deeper understanding of the human experience.
In a scene out of a classic-turned-modern Hollywood movie, Miss Tosh was proposed to on stage by a fellow performer, Katrina Kemp. The two couldn’t be more in love. It’s a burlesque fantasy brought to life.
I can’t express how incredible it is to have Katrina in my life; it feels like I’ve opened a new chapter in a fairytale. Katrina and I have been best friends for 13 years, and for over a decade, we’ve both had a crush on
each other. We were never brave enough to share our feelings because we valued our friendship so much and didn’t want to risk rejection and losing one another.
I’ve faced significant trials in my life. However, all those experiences have made me deeply grateful for the joy, love, and kindness I now receive from my love. I feel incredibly lucky because this kind of love is truly rare, and I believe fate has brought us together.
Separately, they are consummate performers on their own, together, they are a veritable force. What has Miss Tosh learned the most from Katrina?
Katrina has taught me the true power of friendship. To really love someone, you must first be a genuine friend. That love stems from loyalty and that “ride or die” energy, being there for one another in every situation. She has always shown up for me and her loved ones, remaining consistent and kind.
Katrina has also taught me the importance of joy and the choice to embrace it. Her zest for life reminds me that while challenges will always come our way, it’s our willingness to face them that matters. We can come out on the other side, share a good laugh, and say, “Well, that was tough, but we made it!” She is truly my rock and my silver-lining.
As a fashion designer maven, Miss Tosh of course has her own clothing line that celebrates
classic Hollywood with modern sass, with the release of new items for the holidays. With a thriving performing career, wedding plans to be made, and new fashions to design, what is most on her mind when looking towards 2025?
My New Year’s resolution is to take the time to truly live. So much happens within a year, and I often find myself moving from one thing to the next without pausing. In our fast-paced society, maintaining that energetic momentum is important, but I believe it’s equally vital to take the time to “touch grass” and absorb the beauty in simple moments.
I want to make a conscious effort to slow down and appreciate life, take walks, and soak in my surroundings. My goal is to be as present and alive as I can be, cherishing each experience along the way.
And her message to the queer community?
My message to the queer community this year is: I see you. We matter and we are valuable. We are irreplaceable, visible, strong, powerful, and influential. We are beautiful, and our lives matter. Despite the inevitable challenges that lie ahead, we are united as a community. Through our collective strength, we can create incomparable change. Together, we can truly make an impact on our queer future. ■
JESSE TYLER FERGUSON
AMERICA’S FAVORITE REDHEAD
BY STEVE GOTTFRIED
JESSE TYLER FERGUSON IS PERHAPS BEST KNOWN FOR HIS PORTRAYAL AS THE LOVABLE MITCHELL PRITCHETT IN THE GROUNDBREAKING SITCOM MODERN FAMILY WHICH FEATURED A SAME-SEX COUPLE IN A COMMITTED RELATIONSHIP. While it took five seasons for them to officially tie the knot, their presence helped normalize and humanize what otherwise had been relegated to a hot-button political hot potato. Over the course of Modern Family’s 11 year run, Jesse was nominated for an Emmy five times, but mystifyingly never took home the gold. But more important than any piece of hardware, Jesse’s “Mitchell” found his way into our hearts, largely due to Jesse’s innate humanity infusing the character with qualities that made him lovable and relatable, leaving an indelible imprint on our cultural landscape. But there’s a whole other Jesse that exists apart from the character he played on Modern Family. I had a chance to talk at length with Jesse about his delectable podcast Dinner’s On Me, his Tony win for Take Me Out and the bullying he faced growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He left home at the age of 17 moving to New York to pursue his dream of being an actor while taking on odd jobs to stay afloat, laying the foundation for a diverse career in theatre, film, television and most recently, the pod-o-sphere.
Talk to me about your childhood. What was little Jesse like?
Little Jesse was very shy, believe it or not. I grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the late 70s, early 80s. It was a difficult place to grow up as a closeted kid. It’s also a tough place to grow up as a redhead, being a desert. I had a hard time finding my people, and I think part of the reason was because I went to Catholic grade school and high school. As someone who feels “other” and different, and was questioning their sexuality, it’s hard to every day have the Bible sort of used as the main reference point. So, it was tough, and I learned to stay quiet, so that produced a very shy kid.
But when his mother took him to see his first live theatre show, it opened up a whole new world for him.
I remember my mom taking me to a theatre performance and I immediately fell in love with being in that space. They were full of such joy and creativity. And something sparked within me. I asked my mom, not only if we could come back and see another show, but if I could somehow figure out how to get on that stage and be on the other side of the footlights. So, she signed me up for the Albuquerque Children’s Theater, and that became my safe space. That became the place where I started to blossom as a person and figure out who I was. I kind of lived a double life. I had a life at school where I didn’t have any friends, and I had bullies. And I had this life at the community theatre where I had friends and people who respected me. Theater really did save me in so many ways. I don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t found it.
You’ve described a pivotal moment during high school when you performed a monologue from Angels in America, the Pulitzer Prize winning play by Tony Kushner about the AIDS epidemic. Quite an ambitious undertaking for a high schooler, in Albuquerque no less.
I religiously watched the Tony Awards. It was in the era of the Tony Awards I wish they would bring back where they would include little clips from plays. And I remember the clip from Angels in America so vividly. It was Roy Cohn’s first big monologue. And I was like, what is this language? What is this play? It was unlike anything I had ever seen before. So, I ordered the play from a catalogue and I read it multiple times. I was 16 years old, and probably way too young
to understand a lot of it. I wasn’t actively part of the LGBTQ community in any meaningful way, but I was so deeply drawn to this play. We had a speech and debate program that I kind of started myself, because there was no Drama department. I really wanted to find an outlet where I could do this thing that I loved doing at community theater. I did a dramatic monologue from Angels in America and went all the way to Nationals with it. And when I came back to Albuquerque, my Theology teacher asked me if I would perform it for the class. It was
a very pivotal moment in my childhood. I was in one of those programs where you go from grade school to high school. I’d been with some of these people for 11 years of my life. And they were seeing me for the first time and seeing my talent. I remember several people coming up to me and saying, oh, man, you’re gonna be on Broadway one day, or you’re gonna win a Tony Award one day. These things seemed impossible to me at the time, but I was like, wow, it’s really cool that they see that in me.
It reminds me of that old adage that the best
revenge is success. Would you agree with that?
I HAD BEEN DOING A LOT OF THOSE AMBIGUOUS DINNERS WITH PEOPLE. LIKE, IS IT A DATE? IS IT NOT A DATE? IS IT ROMANTIC? IS IT NOT? I WANTED HIM TO KNOW THAT I WAS CONSIDERING THIS A DATE. I WAS VERY UPFRONT. AND I THINK THAT WAS VERY ATTRACTIVE TO HIM, THAT I WAS SO UPFRONT WITH MY INTENTIONS.
Oh, absolutely. I went to my 10-year reunion. But I wasn’t able to go to the last two and I really deeply wanted to try and make it work. Because I just felt like, oh, man, what a moment that would have been to walk in, having been on Broadway, having won a Tony Award, having been on TV with a huge hit comedy.
At the 2022 Tony Awards, Jesse took home the Tony for Best Actor in a Revival for Take Me Out, the Richard Greenberg play about baseball and homophobia in the sports world. Having seen
the play several times some 20 years before, Jesse would go on to play the role.
When I was in New York and I was a struggling actor, I just wanted to be as close to the theater community as possible. And it really didn’t matter in what capacity. I bartended at the Winter Garden Theater where Cats played. I worked at the Theater Circle gift shop which is right across the street from where Phantom of the Opera was playing. At the point when I saw Take Me Out, I had already made my Broadway debut in a very short-lived production of
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER AND I WOULD RIDE THE SUBWAY, I WOULD LOVE SITTING DOWN NEXT TO SOMEONE AND STRIKING UP A CONVERSATION. AFTER MY ANONYMITY WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM ME BY THE SUCCESS OF MODERN FAMILY, I FELT LESS CONFIDENT DOING THAT.”
On the Town. I went to see Take Me Out at the Public Theater downtown and fell in love with the play and specifically with Dennis O’Hare’s performance who played Mason Marzak, the role I would eventually go on to play. It was surprising to me because I’m not a sports fan, but it spoke to me on such a deeper level. It taught me that theater can transcend, and it brings people together from all different walks of life. And then 20 something years later, when they’re reviving the play on Broadway and I was offered the chance to play this role, I immediately think back to that incredibly vivid performance that Dennis O’Hare gave, and thought to myself, I’m never going to be able to get that performance out of my head, and I’m never going to be able to make this role my own. It was really scary, but it was a play I loved too much to say no to. It felt serendipitous that I was being offered this part. But I took the challenge even though it scared the shit out of me, and I’m so glad I did it.
It is interesting because the subject matter is still so relevant. We’re still dealing with many of the same issues, including the fact that there’s still no openly gay player in Major League Baseball. Billy Bean, who became an advocate for diversity in sports, recently died. Bean was the second baseball player in Major League Baseball to publicly come out after he retired. He came to our rehearsal one day and spoke with us for a few hours, and we got a picture with him. And that was a very meaningful day for all of us.
Jesse had another full-circle moment on his wedding day. Jesse had performed in Angels in America as a high-schooler, and then, fast-forward to Jesse’s wedding (to Justin Mikita) more than 20 years later, and the playwright Tony Kushner is officiating at the wedding.
I got to meet Tony through George C Wolfe, who directed Angels in America on Broadway and also directed that short-lived production of On the Town that I did. And one year, he invited the “orphans” in New York to come to his house for Thanksgiving, and I sat across the table from Tony Kushner. That was the first time I met him. I was very nervous, but he immediately made me feel incredibly comfortable. And he was always just so kind to me every time I would bump into him. And then he asked me to do a reading of one of his plays which was such a wonderful experience. So, when it came time for Justin and I to talk about who we wanted to officiate at our wedding, he was at the top of my list, thinking I would never get him. I reached out to him, and he immediately said yes. It was a very full-circle moment for me, and he wrote an incredible ceremony for us.
Let’s talk about your podcast Dinner’s on Me, where you interview celebrities (many of whom are personal friends of yours) over dinner at a restaurant. I initially dipped my toes in, just to get a better sense of who you are. And the more I listened, the more I couldn’t stop. It’s not your typical celebrity interview because it’s in a relaxed setting at a restaurant over a meal and there’s often this whole backstory between you and your celebrity friend, sometimes dating back decades. So, it feels very conversational. And as a listener, you feel like you get to eavesdrop on this intimate conversation. When I was younger and I would ride the subway, I would love sitting down next to someone and striking up a conversation. After my anonymity was taken away from me by the success of Modern Family, I felt less confident doing that. I didn’t necessarily feel like people were always genuine around me when I was meeting them for the first time. And I missed that sense of connection. I feel like this podcast has given that to me again.
You’ve had a long list of famous guests including gay icons and allies like Sandra Bernhard, Kathy Griffin, Zachary Quinto, Sara Bareilles, Sarah Paulson, Ben Platt, Tyler Henry and Margaret Cho. Are there any dream guests that you’re still hoping to book?
It changes as the days go on. I’m currently listening to Ina Garten’s memoir, and I would love to have her on. I would love to have Quinta Brunson. And I would love to have Kamala Harris or Tim Walz or the Obamas. I got to have Chelsea Clinton on, who’s a friend of mine, and that was really interesting, and sort of a deviation from the normal Hollywood type.
Knowing Ferguson is a Streisand superfan, I couldn’t help asking if La Streisand is on his wish list. Oh my god, well, yes! I don’t know if I could do it. I might be too intimidated.
Let’s talk about your fascination with Streisand. When did you first discover her, and what is it about her that speaks to you?
Well, my parents listened to her albums. They had “The Way We Were” and so many others. Even the album covers themselves made a big impression on me. I was like, “Who is this glamorous woman?” Visually, she intrigued me. The first movie of hers that I saw was Funny Girl, which was her first film, and it’s such an incredible performance. From that point, I was absolutely hooked. And then I sort of consumed as much as I could about her. I read a lot of the unofficial
biographies which she has publicly disavowed. And of course, I listened to her new audiobook, all 48 hours. I love her resilience. I love her faith in herself. I love that she was also an outsider who forged her own path. I have met her twice. After reading her memoir, I feel like I have a much better understanding of how she operates in those situations, being who she is, and I have a lot of empathy and compassion for her. I feel like I had as great of a meeting with her as I possibly could have gotten. And I hope that I have more with her. I would love to see her again. I mean, listen, it’s my dream to become friends with her.
Let’s talk about your marriage and your kids. When you first met your husband, he was already seeing someone at the time. And when he suggested getting together as friends for a drink, you passed.
Yeah. He said, “I have a boyfriend right now, but we can definitely go out for a drink as friends.” And I told him, “I have enough friends.”
That’s a classic line.
Well, it’s true. I barely saw the people that I already had connections with. I was like, I’m not going to start casually hanging out with a cute boy who’s 10 years younger than me and unavailable. It just didn’t seem like it was a very good use of my time. So, I politely declined. And when he separated from his boyfriend, I swooped in and took him out. But I did clarify in advance, this is a date and I’m paying. I had been doing a lot of those ambiguous dinners with people. Like, is it a date? Is it not a date? Is it romantic? Is it not? I wanted him to know that I was considering this a date. I was very upfront. And I think that was very attractive to him, that I was so upfront with my intentions.
We’ve been married 11 years now and together for almost 14.
What would you say is the secret to the longevity that you’ve managed to have together?
I mean, it’s really cliché, but communication is key. I don’t think we were great at it at the beginning, but it’s okay to have a learning curve. Before I met Justin, I had been through relationships that went through rough patches, and then those rough patches were taken as a sign that this isn’t working. So, I think learning how to communicate and work through those times is really important. I’m still trying to trust that, because I hate times of discord,
especially with my husband. But we have always ended up stronger after them.
What have you learned from being a father to your two children, Beckett and Sullivan?
I have been thinking about that a lot, because I am different in the way I talk to my children than the way I talk to other people sometimes. When I’m frustrated with my kids, I talk to them in a way that is a lot more compassionate than I would talk to someone who’s my age. I’m trying to harness that compassion in other relationships as well. I think every parent tries to raise their children with the spirit that their parents raised them, but also differently. I mean, obviously, we all suffer trauma from the way we were raised. Even the best parents make mistakes. We try and correct those mistakes, and in turn make our own mistakes.
I thought it was interesting that you first met Joan Rivers when she invited you to one of her Passover dinners after you met her daughter Melissa. And how that led to a friendship with the comic icon before she passed unexpectedly in 2014. And you’ve also been to one of Kathy Griffin’s famous salon dinners where she invites a random assortment of her friends to dinner to bring back the art of conversation.
Both of those experiences are such vivid, wonderful moments in my life. I’ve actually been invited to two of Kathy’s salon dinners which are definitely cut from the same cloth of Joan’s Passover. Joan was just so lovely and warm and hilarious, and she embraced Justin and I so much. I take a page from her book when I try and connect with new people. I think Kathy had also been to some of Joan Rivers’ dinners before, and I think she has definitely embraced the spirit of Joan and has embodied it in such a great way. Kathy’s dinners are so lovely, and she has these ridiculous rules. Like we can’t get up and go to the bathroom without asking for permission. You have to dress up. If you’re late, she makes you eat in the car. There’s no cross-talking. Everyone has to listen to the person speaking. There are no phones allowed at the table. It sounds ridiculous at first, but it really does allow for a deeper connection and it’s something that we’ve really lost touch with – especially with all the social media – just having conversations with new people who you don’t know. So, I really value those dinners that Kathy has invited me to, and I treasure my friendship with both of these remarkable women. ■

BACK TO THE FUTURE: DICE THROUGH TIME (2020)
Ravensburger
Players: 2-4
Oh no! Biff stole the DeLorean and went on a joyride through time. CARDS AGAINST HUMANITY (2009)
Cards Against Humanity LLC Players: 3+
Known as a party game “for horrible people,” Cards Against Humanity, could be considered a new classic game. Each round, one player asks a question from a black card, and everyone else answers with their funniest white card. Each pack comes with 500 white cards and 100 black cards as well as a booklet with game rules and some preposterous alternate rules. Looking to shake up your “CAH” playing? The Red Box offers a 300-card expansion and there are a wide variety of new expansion packs and decks including the Pride Pack, College Pack, an Ass Pack (you heard that right), and a Nasty Bundle featuring a collection of packs that’s “too nasty to sell in stores.”
BLOCKBUSTER (2019)
Spin Master Ltd., Big Potato Players: 4+
If the 2020, Netflix documentary The Last Blockbuster gave you nostalgia for blue polos, fresh popcorn, and the golden age of video rentals then we have a board game for you! Blockbuster is a new game for anyone that has ever seen a movie. Split up into two teams and go head-to-head in a quick-fire buzzer battle. Round two is basically ‘movie charades with a twist’ in which the player who won round one picks up six movie cards, gives the hardest three to their opponent and keeps the rest for themselves. The game features 200 classic movies and contains 60 category cards, and a replica of a Blockbuster parking lot. Wow! What a difference!
CATAN 3D EDITION (2021)
Asmodee
Players: 3-4
Catan first came out in 1995, and in the game, players are settlers on the island Catan. Each player competes to see who can build up their civilization faster. Your settlements grow up from fertile grain fields and your cities are tucked into the sides of majestic mountains. The Catan 3D Edition is based on terrain tiles hand-sculpted by the game designer Klaus Teuber himself. The terrain is hand-painted, and game pieces intricately designed and then antiqued to give them a historic feel. Catan 3D is a great buy for the Catan player in your life, or if you want to upgrade your worn-out set. Catan is best for 3-4 players, and it can take between 60-90 minutes to complete. If the $300 price tag is too steep, the regular version retails at $55 and it is widely available at local and online retail stores. There is an extension pack so you can play with 5-6 players, as well as the Catan Seafarers and Catan Cities & Knights Game Expansions.
ENCHANTED FOREST (1981)
Ravensburger
Players: 2-6
Ravensburger’s Enchanted Forest is a stunning game in which players go on a treasure hunt in the land of fairy tales. Theater queens might think of Sondheim’s Into the Woods a bit as they search through famous fables and stories for hidden treasure along the way. In 1997, the Wizard of Oz adopted a four-player board game, and this is essentially the same game through a different “enchanted forest.”The game, which won the 1982 Spiel des Jahres award, has been around for a while, but the updated design is just as elegant.
PANDEMIC (2008)
Z-Man Games
Players: 2-4
In Pandemic, players assume the role of skilled members of a disease-fighting team working together to keep the world safe from outbreaks and epidemics. A little on the nose? But here’s one way to proactively work together to find a cure. Matt Leacock designed the game, first published in 2007 with artwork by Josh Cappel, Christian Hanisch, Régis Moulun, Chris Quilliams, and Tom Thiel. Pandemic is the first game in a series, which includes Pandemic: On the Brink, Pandemic: In the Lab, Pandemic: State of Emergency, Pandemic: Hot Zone - North America, Pandemic: Fall of Rome, and more. It is only a matter of time before they launch Pandemic: Coronavirus, isn’t it? The fate of humanity is in all our hands, but why not save the day at game night with your friends?
Relive a cult classic with this suspenseful tabletop strategy game, designed by Prospero Hall. In Jaws, one player menaces the island of Amity as the infamous great white while the other players go on the hunt as Brody, Hooper, and Quint. If the players kill the Orca they win. On the other side, if the shark attack is successful Jaws is victorious. This game is perfect for not only any movie lover, but anyone looking for a fun way to entertain dinner party guests or have the neighbors over for good old-fashioned fun. It is always Shark Week somewhere!
THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT (2021)
Asmodee Players: 2-4
The Queen’s Gambit Netflix miniseries took the world by storm in 2020, and the Asmodee’ s fun board game gives players the opportunity to experience chess like the extraordinary Beth Harmon (without having to set foot in an orphanage). In the game, each player has their own gambit piece they move across the chessboard, with each turn planned three moves ahead. In the series, Beth’s ability to envision chess moves on her ceiling enabled her to clear her opponents’ pieces from the board and defeat them. In the game, you compete with other players to claim pieces and points from the board. Designers Rebecca Bleau and Nicholas Cravotta designed the game where in each turn, you can move your “Gambit” like a different chess piece. Channel Beth to outwit your opponents and win the game!
THE CASTLES OF BURGUNDY (2011)
Ravensburger Players: 2-4
Looking to go castle hopping? Step into the shoes of an influential 15th century French prince in the Loire Valley of High Medieval France and do whatever it takes to make your empire flourish. Choose your path wisely, and execute strategies for academic progress, agriculture, trading, and city development. If you are someone who likes strategy and are up for a challenge, this game for you! Stefan Feld designed this game, carefully executed by artists Julien Delval and Harald Lieske. It is gorgeous, and good fun to play.
TELL ME WITHOUT TELLING ME (2021)
Spin Master Ltd.
If you think Cards Against Humanity is tame, Tell Me Without Telling Me is the perfect option. You’ll need the right (or wrong) group of people to play this NSFW charades party game in which you split into two teams and alternate rolling the die and flipping on the timer to “show not tell” and let your team guess in categories such as people, traits, things, places, and NSFW. Don’t shy from the risqué or taboo in this game which is perfect for a Fire Island or Puerto Vallarta late night on a guy’s trip with your crew. If you know, you know, but do your friends?
TICKET TO RIDE (2004)
Days of Wonder Players: 2-5
Ticket to Ride is a popular cross-country train adventure game where players collect and play matching train cards connecting cities and claiming railway routes throughout North America. In the game, players gain points for each route, and the longer the routes, the more points earned. Each game contains one board map of North American train routes, 225 colored train cars, 144 illustrated cards, five wooden scoring markers, and a rules booklet. The game, designed by Alan R. Moon, created by artists Cyrille Daujean and Julien Delval, is part of the Days of Wonder portfolio, and takes about 30-60 minutes to play. The game won the 2004 Spiel des Jahres, the Origins Award for Best Board Game of 2004, as well as many other awards.

TWO PARTS VOICE, ONE PART CELLO CELLOVOCI
BY ALEXANDER RODRIGUEZ
SEPARATELY, THEY ARE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED ARTISTS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT. TOGETHER, THEY FORM CELLOVOCI, MUSIC’S LATEST POWERHOUSE HITTING THE SCENE HARD. Two parts voice, one part cello, add in some piano, Branden and James and Effie Passero mix classic and modern-day pop with style and sensuality that instantly sets them apart. In their early formation, they have already toured internationally, enjoyed a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall, and released their debut album Happy Days With their individual credits, it is not surprising this merge of talents is flying out of the gate. Married couple Branden and James have been together for almost a decade. Singer Branden was a finalist on America’s Got Talent and cellist James has been featured with Olivia NewtonJohn, Bernadette Peters, and Idina Menzel, just to name a few. Singer-songwriter Effie Passero was a semi-finalist on American Idol and enjoyed multiple tours with Postmodern Jukebox, racking up millions of views on the group’s YouTube videos. Every one of CelloVoci’s songs is a journey. They often mashup music you never knew could go together, for example, “Bésame Mucho” and “Hotel California,” or “Chasing Cars” and “The Rose.” If you’ve seen them perform live, you know that in one moment the pathos of their music will bring you
to tears, and in the next, they will have you tapping your feet. At the end of their concert, you are emotionally exhausted after the beautiful journey they have taken you on.
They met by chance while waiting out Covid in Puerto Vallarta. They agreed to take part in a fundraiser for the staff of a local theater and instantly sparked chemistry with each other. They joined forces and performed together for a number of livestreams during the pandemic. Effie’s ability to sing everything from opera to rock to musical theatre to pop attracted Branden and James, who often incorporate those same elements in their work. Effie was taken with the couple’s personality and musical ability. The fact that the friendship just automatically added to the mix made it impossible for them not to make music together. The creative process has been a journey for them, challenging and complimenting each other to make the most of their skills. Touring, recording, and performing together, they have learned a lot from each other.
Effie: I learn from Branden and James every time we travel, each conversation, and especially each performance. The nuance they have, and the way they carry themselves not only as musicians but as people is very impressionable and
inspirational. No matter the circumstances they rise together. So, I’ve learned so much about what it means to be a team player, and how collaboration can be such a beautiful thing. I’m so used to protecting my craft and keeping it so close to my heart, but Branden and James have shown me the beauty in opening up to others and creating together.
Branden & James: Effie has this superpower to make herself so vulnerable onstage when you least expect it. You can hear it in her lyrics, the way she phrases vocal lines, and the utter pain and heartbreak that can show up in her vocal versatility. In life, Effie never really takes anything too seriously. Her personal code is that you can be nice to others, no matter how talented you are. We see this tremendous respect Effie has for humanity in her every day.
As queer artists, they are able to bring that texture and sensibility to their work. There is a sensitivity to and awareness of emotions and creativity that is heightened. Their audience and fan reach is far beyond the LGBTQ community. Their group, and as individuals, are not hindered by labels. Perhaps this is the formula we need to build bridges between the queer and conservative sides. They don’t feel the need to add pomp and circumstance to their queer identity, they let the music speak for itself.
Our core audience is mainstream, heterosexual baby boomers, which is the bulk demographic of the classical-crossover genre. Because we often play shows for this demographic in rather socially conservative areas, we’ve become accustomed to not sharing about our sexuality. At first, we felt that this was somehow hiding a part of who we are. We aren’t ashamed of our queerness at all, we are very open and public about it on social media. But, if our show doesn’t have a particular queer billing, we don’t think it’s always necessary to talk about our sexuality.
Their shows are hitting no matter where they go. In their opinion, what is it that audiences respond to the most?
When people come to classical crossover recitals/concerts, they are not expecting such free-flowing spirits on stage. The three of us together are so sibling-like and silly, it is apparent within the first five minutes just how much we love each other.
THE THREE OF US TOGETHER ARE SO SIBLING-LIKE AND SILLY, IT IS APPARENT WITHIN THE FIRST FIVE MINUTES JUST HOW MUCH WE LOVE EACH OTHER.”
Not only do people respond highly to our music, but they speak so highly of our love for each other and how rare that is to see on stage these days. Our genuine love and respect that we showcase for each other on stage is something people carry home with them. We would love to say we are inspiring others to act the same. Audiences also really love how we take a piece they grew up with and put a fresh spin on it. We are not dissecting a classic and making it “wrong”,
but breathing new life into a song maybe your mother sang to you growing up and bringing those memories back in full force. Audiences really appreciate that the most.
Their debut album, Happy Days is nothing short of stunning. It captures the emotion, the storytelling, and the musical prowess of their live shows. Keep the Kleenex box handy, it will move you to emotion. In a world of noise, electronic beats, and autotune, this is a fierce reminder of
the power of actual music. Their mashup of “You Are My Sunshine” with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” melted our hearts. What were some of the group’s biggest challenges in bringing the show to an album?
The recording studio is like a vacuum - void of any energy exchange with an audience. The microphones aren’t forgiving at all, and every weakness is picked up and amplified. It can be a frustrating and disheartening process. But, unlike with live
performance, it is possible - with a lot of patience and perseverance - to listen and refine things until they are just right.
The love and affection between Branden and James is palpable. But even the best couple can be put to the test when creating music, traveling, and performing, while having to take care of all the other parts of being married. How do they maintain a healthy relationship while in such a creative working partnership?
Branden: James and I are very lucky. We are the dearest of friends. I always say that if we weren’t together, we’d probably be best mates who would still spend endless amounts of time together. I have a very strict rule in our relationship: we never go to bed with an unresolved argument. We are adults, and there is nothing we can’t resolve with some mature conversation. I maintain the same rules in our working relationship. If we ever have an artistic disagreement, we always resolve it before we go on stage. Audiences are much more perceptive than some give them credit for. If our energy is off, the audience knows. I never want to show that side of us to an audience that negates our mission of bringing people together and healing them with our music. This rule of resolution has served us very well over the past 10 years relationally, and nine years musically. We feel very blessed because we understand some groups have irreconcilable differences that ultimately lead to parting ways. If we stick to our formula, there will always be peace in our union, I think.
With all the performances under their belt, all of the places they’ve visited, and all the audiences they’ve learned from, how has their music changed the most from their early years?
James: It’s funny actually, because we still perform a lot of arrangements we made in our first years together. The likes of “Hotel California,”“Hallelujah,” and our medley of music from The Phantom of the Opera, have become fan favorites that we can’t seem to stop playing. In saying that, I think we’ve certainly developed as performers - maturing in our delivery and deepening our musical instincts with one another because we spend so much time together. I think what’s helped us to last as a couple is the fact that we are great friends who genuinely enjoy spending time with one another, and we’re committed to doing the hard work of maintaining a long-term personal and working relationship.
A lot of the couple’s music deals with love – the difficulties, the happiness, the heartbreak. How does being a couple shade those songs?
It makes it real. When you’re living the things that you’re singing about/expressing through music, it makes it much more honest and vulnerable because you’re able
to relate to what you’re performing. A lot of people comment on how much they love our connection on stage - it’s a comment we often get from people who have just seen us for the first time. I don’t think it is possible to fake that. People notice it because it’s real, and we tap into it (both consciously and subconsciously) when we’re on stage.
Effie is a complete chameleon. With punk rock hair, tattoos, and bold fashion, she challenges norms as she launches into a sweet soprano singing the hell out of opera. She can also rock it out, she can also transform songs like “Creep” into a heartbreaking ballad. Give her jazz or musical theatre? She’s got it. Watching her transform on stage is watching a master artist. She’s also very down to earth and remains humble. Her career and her life have had many iterations, with milestones like
American Idol and Postmodern Jukebox just pin posts amid her journey.
I’ve been singing since I was five. I’m incredibly lucky to say that with everything my little heart desired, my mom was there to make it happen. So, from musical theatre to opera, to songwriting- the evolution into American Idol and Postmodern Jukebox is a result of having a supportive parent. Obviously, there was a lot of demanding work and tears, and not everything was supportive all the time, but I am the person I am today because of all the different versions of me I got to meet. Each stage taught me resilience, and how to appreciate criticism instead of taking it so personally. Especially through American Idol and Postmodern Jukebox, I learned how to become a frontwoman and not depend so much on my
piano. My piano was always such a crutch for me! I was scared to be up front and center, and it definitely wasn’t natural for me when I first started. With the help of all my other musician friends, I became more confident in my capabilities and now really love being a lead singer! There is still so much more to learn and I’m excited to see what comes next.
Touring with Postmodern Jukebox globally not only showed her a different side of the world but also made her a viral video hit. From their filmed music videos to audience video captures of her performances, the views started racking up.
Postmodern Jukebox has been not just life-changing, but lifesaving. Like so many of us during the pandemic, I was very unsure of the future of music and live performance.
So, when I got that initial email to see if I was interested in joining their post-pandemic tour, of course, I cried and was so elated. I swore to never take another performance for granted ever again, regardless of the size of the audience. There are too many on-stage memories to share, but there was one recently that was very moving to me. I performed “Hallelujah” to an audience in Finland, and by the end, most everyone was standing and waving their hands in the air. Part of me always finds it funny because it is *not* the religious song so many people think it to be, but this particular night it seemed like that song weighed heavily on many people’s hearts. They were crying and shouting and made me feel like we were in some kind of revival. It was wild.
Her success has come at the cost of having to overcome life’s challenges. If you follow her on social media, you know she doesn’t hide behind smoke and mirrors. Emotional highs and lows, career lulls, heartbreak, and a tough childhood are just a part of who she is as her successes. Sharing this with her fans is not to create content, it is to tell her real story.
Like a lot of people, I didn’t have the most amazing childhood. I had my brothers, and we were each other’s rocks, but sharing feelings wasn’t really a thing until I was much older. Music became my way to share how I was feeling, and as I got older my songs became more relatable to other people. As I understood the responsibility we hold as artists to share our gifts, it also became apparent to me that not only do people want to celebrate our successes, but they appreciate and find comfort in our struggles. No one is alone, no matter how much it might feel to someone at that moment. So, a certain song, or a certain poem, no matter how Shakespearean or simple in its message- might save a life. Vulnerability is a strength, and being authentic is something more people should strive to be. So if I can inspire others to be that way, I will be proud of that.
With everything that she has accomplished and been through at an early age, and with a world of possibilities ahead of her, what is she most proud of looking back on?
Looking back on my life, I can say I am proud of many things. My musical accomplishments always surprise me when I
look back on them. You forget so much of what you do! Next year I am singing at the Sydney Opera House. If someone had mentioned that to little 13-year-old Effie, I would have laughed, but now it’s a reality. I am so proud of how far I have come, from that little weird black sheep in the middle of nowhere Californian agriculture town. But now, I am most proud to say that I am continuously striving to be better. As a woman,
as a friend, as a musician. I’m at the age where I would love to be remembered for my music, but I’d love most to be remembered as a good person. ■

Iron Horse Vineyards is one of California’s iconic wine producers known for its elegant sparkling wines. They have been served at the White House for six consecutive Presidential Administrations. One of my favorites is the Gratitude 2019 Blanc de Noirs. The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness and gratefulness (de pending on the context). This delicious, vintage Blanc de Noirs expresses all these meanings. A vibrant floral nose jumps out of the glass to announce that something truly special is here! The palate is full and deep with notes of early season strawberries and candied pineapple with a touch of clotted cream. The finish lingers beautifully and ends with a slight note of fennel on the front and bright red apples on the back. IRELAND’S HISTORIC CASTLES HAVE A ROYAL HOLIDAY IN
BY MARK A THOMPSON
LATELY, IT SEEMS WE’VE BEEN SUCKED INTO A ROYAL TIME WARP; WE’RE HAVING A MONARCHY MOMENT. Whether we’re tangled in the bedsheets with Red, White & Royal Blue, or caught up in the Regency bodice-ripping of Bridgerton, or the soapy seduction of The Crown, or the never-ending Game of Thrones sequels and prequels, it feels like we’re all pining for our very own Downton Abbey where barons and earls beckon with the promise of a regal life. In which case, why not join in the royal fantasy and frolic through some of Ireland’s more historic castles for the holidays.
Dromoland Castle Hotel exterior (photo courtesy of Dromoland Castle)
For more than 500 years, Dromoland Castle has been welcoming guests to its 500-acre estate located in the heart of County Clare, Ireland. After an overnight flight from the States, few welcomes are more magical than the castle’s Horse & Hound Welcome, complete with huntsmen on horseback, canines in formation, and a formal staff line-up along the front lawn à la Downton Abbey. Champagne, sir? Don’t mind if I do.
The 16th-century castle was once the ancestral home of the O’Brien family who were direct descendants of the last High King of Ireland Brian Ború. That was then, however, and the castle was rebuilt in the 19th century, and subsequently redesigned in the 1960s by the inimitable interior designer Dorothy Draper. The same Dorothy Draper who redecorated Manhattan’s Carlyle Hotel, and the Sherry-Netherland, and the Greenbrier. Think cabbage roses and resplendent reds. Throughout the castle, gilt-framed portraits of various illustrious residents include the intrepid women of Dromoland who married into the family and kept the castle afloat during times of economic turmoil.
Surrounded by a wooded demesne that includes a walled garden as well as a country club with golf course, Dromoland is an imposing limestone edifice with four castellated turrets and a Gothic porch. No matter where I wandered, the baronial castle lurked in my shadow, and yet, in the words of Marie Chawke, Director of Business Development at Dromoland, the resort prides itself on “lighthearted luxury.” As Chawke states,“Consider it like Sandringham, the country house where the Royals go to relax.”In which case, reach for your trusty Barbour jacket and a pair of wellies—and off we go.
Dromoland offers a variety of outdoor activities, which include boating, archery, clay pigeon shooting—as well as its celebrated falconry program where guests interact with various birds of prey. Once the falcon alights on my gloved fist (thanks to a smidgen of raw meat), I’m as smitten as the falconer. Despite the cute names (Owlvin, Pickles, Mac), these hawks, owls, and falcons are not lovebirds to be kissed so much as sleuths of the sky with killer instincts.
When the sun sets over Lough Dromoland in a brilliant display of pink and mauve, it’s a good time to retire to the castle’s Cocktail Bar which is situated in the octagonal room that once housed the family library. Draper’s design sensibility is readily apparent in the stacked Staffordshire pugs, one of which was a trysting signal when the lord was away and the lady ready to play. Bespoke cocktails are equally playful and designed
around a tarot deck with its promises of fortune and favor. By the time I headed into dinner at the Earl of Thomond restaurant, I was fairly certain that I was “to the manor born,” a feeling that was amplified as I sipped champagne and dined on poached lobster.
Overlooking the shores of Lough Dromoland, the castle is located a short 15-minute drive from Shannon Airport, which offers direct flights from various airports in the States. Slightly further afield is the maritime city of Galway, easily accessible by car and driver (unless you’re comfortable driving on the left side of the road) in less than an hour from Dromoland Castle. Galway has been designated a European Region of Gastronomy, and one of the best ways to discover the city’s culinary bounty is with Galway Food Tours. Local guides lead you into award-winning restaurants and cafés where you feast upon artisanal chocolates, cheeses, and the best of Galway’s gastronomy such as squid toast with katsuobushi tuna flakes.
It’s very easy to feel completely sated and indulged at Dromoland, especially after a proper Irish breakfast, at which point, it might be a good time to consider the next stop on this royal promenade of Irish castles, all of which are members of the Legend Collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts. Founded in 1968, Preferred is the world’s largest independent hotel brand, and the portfolio’s Legend Collection represents the highest standards of luxury for the discerning traveler.
Heading south into County Kerry, I arrived at The Europe Hotel & Resort, which sits on the shores of Lough Léin. Surrounded by 26,000 acres of national parkland amidst Ireland’s highest mountain range, The Europe is home to the acclaimed ESPA, a two-level, 50,000-square foot hydrotherapy wellness sanctuary complete with indoor/outdoor vitality pool, saltwater pool, ice fountain, and thermal suites.
As tempting as it is to remain at ESPA at The Europe, the resort is just across the lake from Ross Castle, a 15th-century tower fortress and castle keep that is open to the public with guided tours. Equally fascinating is Kate Kearney’s Cottage, a 170-year-old establishment at the entrance to the Gap of Dunloe where guests traverse the mountain pass by pony and carriage while serenaded with Celtic songs.
Lakefront suites at The Europe are as streamlined and elegant as staterooms on a classic Cunard cruise liner from the Art Deco era. The expansive balconies overlook the lake and the mountains with panoramic vistas of sunrise and sunset. The hotel offers various lounges and bars, as well as a private library and a majestic lobby,
all with lakefront views. The overall atmosphere at The Europe is akin to an Alpine retreat where royals luxuriate in blissful anonymity.
Driving across the Emerald Isle, heading east into County Cork, it was easy to see the world from Elphaba’s perspective: a viridescent empire in varying shades of green. Upon our arrival into Cork, the imposing iron and brick gates of Hayfield Manor opened into a verdant enclave. The five-star property is but a ten-minute stroll into the center of town where visitors flock to the English Market. One of Ireland’s most celebrated food halls, the English Market is equally well-known as the locale where Queen Elizabeth laughed in gay mirth with one of the fishmongers. For Irish whiskey aficionados, the Midleton Distillery Experience offers a two-hour guided tour with tastings of premium whiskey and a visit to the historic Distiller’s Cottage.
Originally owned by wealthy merchants of Cork, Hayfield Manor has been a five-star property since its opening in 1996. Flanked by University College Cork, the landscaped grounds include an aviary and courtyard, walled garden, as well as spa and indoor pool. The cocktail lounge Bloom is housed in a shimmering glass conservatory that overlooks the manor house’s back lawn and gardens. Dinner at Orchids is helmed by Chef Mark Staples whose mastery of Irish cuisine ensures that no guest ever questions the supremacy of Irish butter. In the morning, I slathered breakfast scones with more butter, all the better to hike the cliffs of Ballycotton along the eastern shores of Ireland.
Less than an hour’s drive from Cork, Castlemartyr is named for the 13th-century tower house built by the Knights Templar. Once owned by Sir Walter Raleigh, Castlemartyr Resort was originally an 18th-century country house. The 220-acre resort is surrounded by landscaped topiary gardens, meandering streams, and lush green fields. The 18-hole golf course features a club house and pro shop. An indoor pool overlooks the formal garden. Outdoor activities include kayaking, cycling, croquet—as well as the Irish national sport, hurling. With the help of semi-professional hurlers, I attempted the Gaelic game. I did as I was instructed; I practiced with the wood stick known as a hurley and the small ball—but in the end, I left the field to the pros and headed to dinner.
Housed in Castlemartyr’s original manor house, the two Michelin-starred Terre restaurant is helmed by Chef Vincent Crepel who oversees an exemplary dining experience that is as theatrical as it is visceral, and completely satisfying. The evening commences with an immersive garden tour,

and continues with snacks in the open kitchen, before guests are escorted into the dining room for a multi-course tasting menu with wine pairing, which is then followed by post-prandial digestifs in the grand salon. At evening’s end, I felt a kind of giddy elation, as if I’d just completed an extraordinary gastronomic odyssey.
From Castlemartyr, we headed north into Country Kildare toward the outskirts of Dublin where The K Club awaited our arrival. Built on the grounds of the original 19th-century Barton estate in the style of a French château, The K Club opened as a five-star property in 1991. The 550-acre property boasts a pair of golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer which were host to the Ryder Cup in 2006. Bisected by a private milelong stretch of the River Liffey, The K Club also features a fishing lodge for fly fishing, as well as extensive woodland trails for hiking, cycling—or tours via Segway.
Under the watchful tutelage of our ghillie Robert, we chose archery for our afternoon pastime. As we aimed for the bullseye, we were observed by young members of The K Club’s Junior Einsteins Science Club. Such a strenuous physical workout merits Afternoon Tea, with plenty of clotted cream—and champagne, of course. Served in the Drawing Room of the original Straffan House wing of the hotel, The K Club’s tea service features a three-tiered étagère laden with sandwiches and scones that replicate the various artworks scattered around the grounds.
The history of The K Club is entwined with Barton & Guestier, the oldest winehouse in Bordeaux which was founded in 1725 by Thomas Barton. While it might be hard to imagine an Irishman in charge of a Bordeaux winery, a tasting held in the wine cellar with the Chief Sommelier leaves no doubt about the visionary excellence of the Barton winemaking dynasty and its legacy at The K Club.
Country Kildare is well-known throughout the world as an equestrian destination, notable for its exceptional thoroughbreds, and consequently, The K Club offers various equine activities and tours. After a hearty Irish breakfast served in The Barton Restaurant, we headed off to Jessica Harrington Racing for a tour of her 120-acre horse farm. With the Wicklow Mountains in the distance, we witnessed the thoroughbreds process through their morning workout with their trainers and jockeys. After visits to the paddocks and the training facilities, we headed to the Harrington family kitchen for morning tea and cakes—because who could refuse another scone with Irish butter?
From Shannon to Dublin, from the West
coast of Ireland to the East, or vice versa, there’s a string of Irish castles and historic manor houses that enable any visitor the ability to imagine life as a royal. All queens are welcome on the Emerald Isle where marriage equality was won by popular vote. Ireland is one of the more LGBTQ+-friendly places on the planet, having passed a Gender
Recognition Act, as well as a Children and Family Relationships Act. Throughout the year, various Pride parades and festivals celebrate LGBTQ+ solidarity, and in Dublin, the Pride Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024, with a 10-day festival. In short, there’s every reason to wear a crown and let your royal shine bright in Ireland. ■

Daughter of the Diaspora:
The birth of Yemayá Okute
What happens when society trades in thousands of years of Goddess culture for fierce patriarchal preservation? The narrative presented in ‘On Women Hating’ explore this question, taking into consideration the “contemporary consequences” of this transition, and the impact of factors such as modern science as well as the sapling beliefs attached to the earliest concepts of “mankind”. Featuring photography, tapestries, sculptures and other works from a half dozen woman-identifying artists, this eye-opening exhibition from Alyssa Alexander bridges the gap between history and today, between the mythical and the actual, empowerment and oppression. Created as part of the Feminist FUTURES fellowship program, ‘On Women Hating’ comes at a time when bodily autonomy, sexual freedom and other aspects of femininity are entering new eras of uncertainty, and the the Project for Empty Space at 800 Broad Street (Newark, NJ) happens is providing a safe space for necessary dialogue. NYC RESTAURANT WEEK: WINTER 2025
Begins January 21, 2024
Various restaurants
All five boroughs New York, NY
If sinking ships and steamy jalopy flings float your boat, then a night out at Titaníque — NYC’s “must sea” off-broadway event — should top your winter to-do list. This left-field musical pairs the sappy classics of Canadian songstress Céline Dion with an only slightly accurate retelling of the Academy Award-winning film, Titanic, and wouldn’t you know the results are full-on hysterical. Winner of the Lucille Lortel Award, the Dorian Theatre Award, the Off-Broadway Alliance Award and the Los Culturistas Culture Award, Titaníque centers on what COULD happen if Dion were to take the reins during an unsuspecting Titanic museum tour. Apparently, she’s got the talents to turn a boring day of historical facts into a larger-than-life “slay-fest” peppered with the Grammy award-winning belters you love, plus a few newbies that his screaming high notes. Taking place six days a week at the famed Daryl Roth Theatre, Titaníque makes tragedy a joy, as the film that made you weep like hell in your teens takes on a whole new vibe. QUEER MASTERPIECE LUCA GUADAGNINO REUNITES WITH SCREENWRITER JUSTIN KURITZKES
BY STEVE GOTTFRIED
FAMED QUEER DIRECTOR LUCA GUADAGNINO (BEST KNOWN FOR CALL ME BY YOUR NAME ) HAS RETEAMED WITH SCRIBE JUSTIN KURITZKES TO HELM THE ADAPTATION OF A LOOSELY AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL NOVELLA “QUEER” BY WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS ABOUT A MAY-DECEMBER LOVE AFFAIR BETWEEN TWO MEN, SET IN THE 1950S. Their previous collaboration (Challengers) which starred Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor in a provocative sweaty love triangle set in the world of professional tennis, never quite delivered its promise. This latest collaboration, however, exists on an entirely different level, earning its place alongside Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers amidst a queer cinematic renaissance of films grappling with the intricacies of queer relationships admist larger existential questions. Guadagnino first read the book as a teenager and instantly connected with the material, describing the film as“a love story from a specific generation to another generation. I hope audiences feel the anguish of William Lee and his epic love for Eugene Allerton and learn from the beauty of their bond.”
The film stars Daniel Craig as William Lee (a queer novelist and drug addict) living in Mexico during the 1950s who is drawn to a much younger American soldier. Craig’s performance obliterates any shred of his James Bond persona, rendering a thoroughly convincing and compelling individual who aggressively pursues the object of his desire. It is, by my estimation, a career-defining performance by Daniel Craig who takes on the unapologetically queer role with a balls-to-the-wall fervor and turns in a finely nuanced performance. Drew Starkey co-stars as Eugene Allerton, the object of Lee’s affection, and provides the perfect yin to Daniel Craig’s yang. The film effectively blurs the line between a relationship that teeters on a knife’s edge between codependent and interdependent. From the start, Craig sets the tone, shamelessly courting the young soldier in a manner that is tragically comedic. There’s a bit of a cat-and-mouse foreplay which makes their eventual physical union all the more satisfying. Visually, Guadagnino couldn’t have chosen a better partner in Starkey who bears an uncanny resemblance to Daniel Craig as we might have imagined him as a younger man 25 years his junior -- which sets up a subliminally narcissistic dynamic. Starkey’s performance is thoroughly internal so that it’s more about watching his body language, his non-verbal cues and micro-expressions down to the way he eats a meal while Lee romances him. It’s a nuanced look at the“sugar daddy”relationship showing the ties that bind and repel these two individuals.
As with Call Me by Your Name, Guadagnino allowed his two leads to spend plenty of time together before filming began to allow the chemistry to develop, so that when you see them onscreen there’s a fluidity to their movement and an emotional connection that reverberates under the surface. He even brought in a choreographer to help the actors prepare for a body-melding dance/dream sequence toward the latter part of the film after they partake in an ayahuasca ceremony in the jungles of Ecuador. Another great surprise in this film is a fine supporting performance by a virtually unrecognizable Jason Schwartzman (best known for his eccentric roles in Wes Anderson films). Schwartzman might have seemed an odd choice for the sexually adventurous gay playboy but is pitch perfect in a thoroughly original performance which shows his range in a whole new light. Queer is now open in theaters.
WICKED WORTH THE WAIT?!
BY ALEXANDER RODRIGUEZ
IT SEEMS LIKE WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THE WICKED FILM FOR AGES. WELL, YES, WE HAVE. UNIVERSAL FIRST ANNOUNCED THE FILM ADAPTATION OF THE BROADWAY MUSICAL WAY BACK IN 2012. Casting rumors swirled around but, development slowed down and then was paused by Covid. Finally, in 2021, the studio announced that Jon Chu from Crazy Rich Asians success would be directing, and Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo would be playing the leads. Filming finally began in 2022, then was cut short due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, with filming resuming and finally concluding in January of 2024. So, yes, we have been waiting. Was it worth it? A million times yes.
To be completely honest, Wicked is not my favorite musical. I like it, I’ve seen the show many times, and, just like any good gay, have learned the lyrics to the show’s titular songs like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular.” But no, I wouldn’t call it among my favorites. That being said, with the creative team and stellar cast involved, I knew it would hit the mark. It didn’t just hit the mark, it far surpassed it, raising the bar high for any movie musicals that are to follow. It isn’t just the amazing sets, the CGI visuals, the diverse cast, or the lush cinematography, but this movie has heart. It may sound schmaltzy, but that’s the best way to categorize it. At the center of all the wonderful things this film is, it is sincere, and everyone involved seems to be in on making this story come to life in such an intimate and emotional way, despite the grandeur of the story, in a way that the stage could never. Don’t forget to bring your Kleenex, you are going to need it.
The movie is based on the 2003 Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz from Godspell and Pippin fame, which is based on the 1995 novel Wicked by Gregory MacGuire, which is based on Frank Baum’s the Wizard of Oz novel in 1900. The story is a bit of a prequel and post-story of The Wizard of Oz but instead of focusing on Dorothy and her crew, it is based on the origin stories of Glinda and Elphaba and how they became the iconic characters we see in the Oz story. Under the pageantry and fantasy of Oz and bigger-than-life characters, the story is really about friendship –with all the ups and downs a true relationship will go through. It’s not always a fairy tale ending. The film adaptation is split into two parts, mirroring Act 1 and Act 2 from the musical. Part 2 will be released same time next year.
For die-hard fans of the show, be relieved. Most movie musicals will cut shorter musical interludes or song transitions in favor of getting to the action and dialogue. This film is pretty damn close to what is included in the stage version. But the film lets certain moments breathe that add such life and complexity to the story. Because the story is being divided into two parts, I figured they would fill the space with added characters and storylines. Yes, there are more pointed characters than the stage version (Glinda’s mean girl besties), but the story remains untouched, just expanded. Director Chu lets his lead characters take their time in moments of connection. Even the song “Popular” isn’t rushed. There is a beautiful moment when we realize that Elphaba and Glinda are becoming friends, it is a moment without music, without dialogue, just them acting up a storm and capturing our hearts in an instant. Also, for die-hard fans, the songs all hit the moments we’ve all come to know and love from the cast recording. But, in true movie style, the songs are made more intimate and less jazz hands, and we can feel the characters’ expressions and we can hear the pathos in the subtle delivery. It really is a stellar job of how they’ve made the music so accessible to a cinematic audience.
From a queer point of view, we are well-represented. Not only is one of the main storylines about finding your footing as an outcast, but a sub-storyline deals with the vilification of a species in order to silence them. Sound familiar? We also have openly queer actors Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, and even Elphaba herself leading the way. Among the dance sequences, you will see non-binary and queer characters mixing and mingling seamlessly among the ensembles. We would love to have a few moments in the Oz salon with some of those pretty boys.
The casting for the film is superb. Ariana Grande is in her element and Glinda’s mannerisms and ego could tire easily after a few moments, but she incorporates the elements we laugh at on stage and somehow makes it very real while keeping the humor. She is both subtle and heavy-handed in her approach to the character, and the result is a complex presentation that grips our hearts. What can I even say about Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba? There was a lot of chatter and opinions flying around about her casting, but there can be no question, this role is totally hers. She adds quiet rage, moments of vulnerability, and intense pathos to a character that could have quite easily been made into a bombastic one-level performance. She and Ariana play a skillfully crafted dance, exploring their relationship while letting the other shine. I wasn’t too crazy about Jeff Goldblum being cast as The Wizard. And while he does add his signature mannerisms to the character, he really fits the role well, and I was sold. Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible was right on the money, she is glamour, she is magic, she is dangerous. The entire cast is superb, all hitting their mark. Surprisingly, even with his good looks and charm, Jonathan Bailey did a great job but didn’t bring the house down. For us who know the story, we know that his intense moments come in Part 2. Also, he does seem a bit older than everyone else to go to school at Shizz. Don’t attack me, gays, he was still good!
Fun, subtle shoutouts to the Wizard of Oz film are peppered in here and there. Miss Gultch (the Wicked Witch’s counterpart) on a bicycle, poppies, the Yellow Brick Road, ruby slippers, and even Munchkin costuming all give an homage to the 1939 Judy Garland film. And not to give too much away, those cameos you were hoping for? Yes, and they aren’t just cameos. Keep an eye open for Stephen Schwartz’s very brief cameo (I’m not giving anything away).
There really is no way to describe how amazing Part 1’s finale is. For those of us who know the show backward and forward, we know what’s coming. How are you going to surprise an audience with a song that we’ve all sung in the shower day after day? Well, they did it. The buildup, the special effects, the acting, and the cinematography, all come together for a segment that leaves the audience speechless. During my screening, the audience lept to its feet in tears and applause. During a time when movies just seem to get louder and filled with more CGI to make up for substance, this film has not only accomplished surpassing the stage version, but it proves that a movie can have a lot of heart no matter how big the sets are. This movie will become a classic that will be shared for generations to come.
DEFINITELY 5 OUT OF 5 STARS.
BROADWAY’S SASSY SEASON
BY BEN RIMALOWER
HERE SHE IS, WORLD. THE EVENT OF THE BROADWAY SEASON IS UPON US. Six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald is starring in the classic Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurents musical fable, Gypsy (Majestic Theatre, opening December 19, open ended).
Any production featuring the most celebrated musical theater performer of our time is noteworthy, but this one is especially of interest in that it’s the first time a major production of this quintessential American musical will feature a Black actress in the leading role of Rose.
Some have balked that this is somehow inappropriate as the piece, inspired by the memoirs of burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee, chronicles non-fictional characters in situations that may historically have been inhospitable to people of color. Apparently, that’s part of McDonald’s fellow six-time Tony winner, director George C. Wolfe’s (Angels in America, Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk) concept for the production. As McDonald told Good Morning, America,“Some of these lines and some of the situations that the characters find themselves in, it’ll hit in a different place coming from a Black woman.”
I’m all for it. Gypsy has already been revived on Broadway four times (with casts led by Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone) since its original production starring Ethel Merman in 1959. It’s considered by many to be the greatest American musical and by that logic, it should be open to new interpretations and visions, like Shakespeare or Sophocles. Let’s see what other angles this show can be approached from, what else can be revealed in its rich text. Maybe it won’t work, but I can’t wait to see the attempt either way.
Audra McDonald
There is no director I’d rather see at the helm of a new production of Gypsy than George C. Wolfe. Certainly, he’s an excellent choice to mine these words and music for everything they have to say on the Black experience in America at the end of the vaudeville era. But even beyond that, Wolfe is the ideal person to navigate the show’s dichotomy of psychological drama and show business razzmatazz. Curtain up, light the lights.
Here for a good time, not a long time, the seasonal revival of the holiday movie musical stage adaptation, Elf (Marquis Theatre, closes January 4), looks especially fun this time around thanks to the casting of everyone’s favorite gay sassmaster in both Shucked and , Grey Henson, as Buddy. Add in a Mary Poppins’s Ashley Brown, Tina’s Carousel’s Michael Hayden, and The Lord of the Rings legend Sean Astin as Santa, and the yuletide just got a whole lot jollier. Zachary Quinto proved himself as comfortable on stage as he is on screen with such Broadway successes as The Boys in the Band and The Glass Menagerie. Now he returns in Emmy nominated TV writer Leslye Headland’s Cult of (Hayes Theater, opening December 12, closes February 2), also starring Molly Bernard, Roberta Colindrez, Barbie Ferreira, Rebecca Henderson, Christopher Lowell, David Rasche, Christopher Sears, Mare Winningham, and Shailene Woodley, and directed by Trip CullLobby Hero, Significant Other, Choir Boy, Six Degrees of Separation).
If you just want to laugh your way through Valentine’s Day, perhaps the answer is All In: Comedy About Love (Hudson Theatre, previews December 11, closes February 16) scribe Simon Rich and Lorne Michael is one of the producers.
