Window of opportunity

WITH REBECCA STEWART

Rebecca Stewart acquired her first piece of jewellery from Youngs Jewellers, the same store where she was offered a part-time job after staring in awe at their window display. Now, that same shop is hers. Metropol writer Nina Tucker caught up with Rebecca about business, motherhood and jewels.

Standing before a gorgeous jewellery boutique, enveloped in a dream of future possibilities, Rebecca Stewart was approached by a sta member and asked if she’d like a part-time job there.

“She obviously recognised my love of the shop,” Rebecca remembers. She snapped up the job and soon part-time turned full-time, an opportunity Rebecca is still thankful for. “I realised I had found what I wanted to do.”

In quaint New Regent Street, Youngs Jewellers is must-go destination for those in the know, full of sparkling precious stones, stunning jewellery, and heirlooms. Inside the arched windows and Spanish Mission-style exterior, Rebecca spends her time working with beautiful things.

Interesting customers, designing jewellery, and wonderful creative displays, Rebecca mentions as some of what she enjoys most about her business. Her work combines her loves of fashion,

10 September 14, 2023 Metropol one on one

design and antiques. “A privilege”, she says, to be involved in people’s special moments, whether it be joyous engagements, anniversaries, birthdays, illness recovery, or a memento to remember a loss.

Eventually, Rebecca was o ered a partnership in the business she adored, and then in 2017 she became the sole owner, finalising the vision she’d had while gazing into the shop window years before. She still feels blessed to have found something that she is always excited to do, and which has given her enormous freedom as a mother.

Business aside, Rebecca believes her biggest achievement is raising her now 20-year-old son. Balancing motherhood and an ever-growing business was no picnic. Rebecca recalls that the flexibility created by owning her own shop enabled her to attend all of her son’s special events, and also to take him to “work” with her, starting when he was just two weeks old.

She’s an empty-nester now, her son in Dunedin studying neuroscience, and it has opened up more time to focus on the business.

A wonderful group of women friends, an inspiring son, a great extended family, and a flexible job, get the credit for supporting Rebecca, and enabling her to juggle work and motherhood commitments, and to survive during tough times.

During the Christchurch earthquakes, Youngs Jewellers faced hardship when its newly refurbished New Regent Street dwelling was inaccessible following earthquake-related city centre closures. Faced with two years of mortgage payments and no place to trade, Rebecca fitted out her garage and opened it to customers, although security risks meant no address advertising, which, she says, proved to be a huge challenge.

She finally returned to New Regent Street with a few more businessrelated memories and a lot more admiration for her “vibrant” city. “Christchurch has been through so much and it is a testament to the people here that their tenacity bought them out the other side.” Her own resilience is “simple”. “Do what you love and work hard and the rest follows,” she says, adding she’s already given her son that same advice.

Aside from her business, Rebecca judges fashion at the Riccarton races, which she loves for the bond between clothing and jewellery. “I enjoy seeing women expressing their own unique style and interpretation of racing fashion,” she mentions. It’s an annual tradition to close Youngs Jewellers on Christchurch’s well-loved Cup and Show Day, Rebecca says, to celebrate Canterbury’s finest with her friends and family.

There was a time when she was destined for a life of catwalks and castings. After leaving school, a statuesque Rebecca flew to Europe on a three-year modelling contract, until home sickness intervened and she swiftly returned to her family in the South Island. A stint studying law at the University of Canterbury followed, before her life-defining visit to Youngs Jewellers.

Days now often comprise morning walks in Hagley Park, creating jewellery displays, sourcing stones, buying, seeing customers, shooting content for social media and “never-ending bookwork”. Despite the latter, Rebecca loves what she does. “It never feels like work even though having a business is a seven-day-a-week job.”

Nights are filled with friends and family for movies or dinner, home cooking, or eating out, creating wonderful memories. Helping others is also part of her ethos, with the success of her business enabling Rebecca to support charity events, and to sponsor and make donations to various close-to-home charities.

As a young girl, she was fascinated with antiques, the arts, and all beautiful things. Her great-grandmother’s collection, many of those pieces gifted to Rebecca, spurred a fondness for art and dreams. “It was the start of a life-long love a air,” she says.

For Rebecca, jewellery is a physical reminder of memories, and she believes that each piece should be considered an heirloom for the special moments it evokes. Antique jewellery often comes with incredible craftsmanship and makes a great investment, she says, although such pieces are limited, require more care, and are becoming increasingly harder to find in mint condition.

When chosing jewellery, women and men should follow their heart whether they want diamonds, or a beautiful coloured gemstone, new or antique. “I believe you should buy what you love,” she says.

Devoted to the art of jewellery, Rebecca prides herself on creating spectacular window displays that incite acclaim from overseas travellers. “Jewellery design is a form of art. Society needs art to create vibrant, stimulating environments,” she reveals. With each eye-catching display that she creates, Rebecca’s younger self gazes through a window and falls in love all over again.

What’s trending? Rebecca says…

Rings! Coloured stones and unusual, specimen stones always excite Rebecca’s customers.

Aquamarines, green and pink tourmalines, sapphires of di erent colours, and Champagne diamonds are all in demand. Customers love stones they can connect with. People are loving jewellery that is a reflection of their individual style.

WITH JASON GUNN Storytelling

12 September 14, 2023 Metropol one on one

When Jason Gunn describes himself, the word storyteller rings out loudly across the airwaves. He’s many things – actor, broadcaster, communication coach, entertainer, and motivational speaker – yet all include a storytelling component, a gift he says has shaped his life from a young age.

A household name in many Kiwi homes, Jason is often remembered by older generations for television shows such as What Now, Jase TV, The Son of a Gunn Show, Dancing with the Stars, and a multitude of others, many developed especially for child audiences.

These days, Jason is equally widely known for his consummate skills injecting life into all manner of events, and for teaching others how to e ectively tell their stories. While still working in television and radio, he’s also the owner of “Easily Said”, teaching individuals and organisations how to communicate with confidence and master the art of storytelling.

Having learnt from the best in the business over a 30 plus year career, he is now paying it forward. “I want to give people the skills to tell their stories and truly connect with their audience, to speak with confidence, clarity, and from the heart,” he explains.

A popular Master of Ceremonies (MC) and keynote speaker, Jason is highly entertaining on-stage and o , connecting and involving his audiences on a personal level. He credits his late mother for infusing him with a love of storytelling.

“She could light up a room. Mum was (and still is) a constant inspiration to me. Sometimes, I can’t tell where she stops and I start.”

Jason grew up on a steady diet of his mother’s anecdotes, and invariably feels close to her when he is telling stories. Having frequently seen the di erence one person can make in how they talk, and listen, to people spurred him to want to help others gain this “superpower”.

“Easily Said is all about helping people feel easy about speaking,” he says, “about teaching others how to tell their own tales.

“Communication is at the heart of everything. For instance, businesses that thrive are good communicators.”

Everyone can communicate e ectively, he believes. “You can do it. Sometimes you’ve just never been shown, or told how, or given the tools, the know-how, and the confidence.”

He has a master plan to enable as many others as possible to embrace their speaking superpower, starting with children. “It’s harder as adults to learn new skills, whereas children are like sponges when it comes to soaking up information, and how to

do things. We need to help people to speak better sooner. We need to get children confident enough to stand up in front of others, and talk from the heart.”

Speaking from the heart is integral to e ective communication, bonding with listeners, and getting a message across, says Jason.

“Good talking is about making people feel something. It’s not about standing up and reading information from a sheet of paper, or pointing to a PowerPoint presentation. It’s about creating a moment, and having the audience identify with those moments. I don’t want people to leave an event, or occasion, regretting that they didn’t say something when they wanted to.

Being authentic or true to yourself is also a key component. “Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Take humour, for example. It has its place, but shouldn’t be forced. If you’re not usually funny, then don’t try and be.

“We all know how to speak. So many people, however, have already decided they’re either good or bad at speaking in front of others, but it isn’t that simple.”

Nothing is better than connecting with the people around you, he says, especially with broader communication avenues and technology changing the entire world into a screen. His own experiences help Jason teach others how to talk in front of a camera, such as for a blog, in a video conference, and yes, for TV if required. It’s about talking to one person, focusing on one person in the audience, he says.

Su ering from nerves before speaking is a common condition, says Jason, adding that there’s nothing wrong with being nervous. “It shows you care.”

What he does before speaking is take a few minutes, tell himself “you can do it”, and goes out and does it. “You give yourself permission to speak, create a moment and then control it. I always tell myself that somewhere, someone wants to hear something you have to say. No-one knows how much you know until they know how much you care.”

JASON’S TOP TIPS

Make a connection with the audience, get to know them, understand them, and read the room.

Speak from the heart. No-one knows how much you know until they know how much you care.

Empathise with your audience. Remember it is about them. Authenticity does matter. Understand your audience, and use anecdotes to tell their stories.

Metropol September 14, 2023 13 one on one
Everyone has a story to tell, and there are plenty of stages on which television personality and communications coach Jason Gunn can bring life to them. Metropol editor Lynda Papesch explains.
“I always tell myself that somewhere, someone wants to hear something you have to say.”

In early August, Ōtautahi Christchurch and Brown Bread hosted the Changing the Game – Wāhine in sport event. Metropol deputy editor Daniella Judge was one of those who attended.

Adiverse group of women from local sports communities participated in ‘Wāhine in sport’, an event aimed at driving positive change for sport in Canterbury and throughout Aotearoa, on the back of the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ momentum.

A karakia kicked o the event and then Master of Ceremonies Brodie Kane engaged the audience with her enthusiastic “Women are pretty cool, so let’s keep it going”.

Key speakers included Kendra Cocksedge. As a Rugby World Cup champion and retired Black Fern, Kendra has witnessed first-hand the impact of international victories on women’s participation in sports. She says that having young girls coming up to her and expressing their newfound interest in playing rugby after the Rugby World Cup win was, and is, very special.

“If you can see it, you can be it,” she states. This quote quickly became a pillar catchphrase, used throughout the morning. Kendra also emphasised the importance of having women in sports governance, “it trickles down,” she says.

Also sharing her experience was Noraini Milne, the Founder of Sow a Lyttel Seed (SALS). Noraini is a Lyttelton-based mum, committed to her mission of promoting healing and well-being through sports in the Muslim community.

She advocates that sports can work to unify communities. As part of her work with SALS, she organises sports days which are all about encouraging unity. From her perspective as a Muslim woman in sports, she says, “We want young women who look like us, in hijab, getting involved in sports and leadership.”

Cheryl Smith, a former Black Fern who shattered barriers in 2005 as the first woman to coach a men’s senior rugby team in Northland, conveyed the pivotal role of diversity in enhancing sports clubs’ community impact, stressing the essence of “placing the right people in the right positions”. Cheryl advised the audience to find the people in their community and make them feel welcome, a message that can reach beyond sports fields. She ended with this nugget of wisdom, “It doesn’t matter where you come from or what you look like, you are one person.”

Last to take the stage was Dr Lucy Hone, a director of the New Zealand Institute of Wellbeing & Resilience, a research associate at AUT University, a published academic researcher, and best-selling author.

Lucy said she loves to see what is happening in women’s rugby, but wants to see that same enthusiasm across all codes. “We need to band together to make that happen,” she tells us.

“If you can see it, you can be it.”

A mere 6% of sports research is done on women she explains. “The research is completely lacking.”

From a well-being perspective, Lucy’s message to women provides inspiration. She says that however you choose to play sport, you get the positive emotions from the highs, and you get the lows, which teach you mental resilience. You get the relationships, the connection to your teammates, and a sense of meaning and belonging. You might even get some accomplishments, Lucy adds.

“A myth of resilience is that it’s an individual pursuit, that it’s a fixed trait. That’s false. Resilience is a capacity that we all have access to,” Lucy says, adding what is needed is external support to help us along the way.

A question and answer session sparked discussions around the barriers that typically a ect women who want to play sports, such as managing menstrual cycles, and making time to play sports when you have family responsibilities. The room was buzzing with shared opinions and innovative ideas.

The strong message and sentiment of this event shows that women in sports are already powerfully motivational, and that getting more women and girls involved, can make a lasting and positive di erence.

My Fair Lady features Christchurch Symphony Orchestra

Showbiz Christchurch is delighted to introduce its eagerly awaited production of My Fair Lady.

Following the success of previous hits, Matilda The Musical and That Bloody Woman, this is their most anticipated production of 2023. Running from 21 to 30 September. Set in 1912, the musical tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young Cockney flower seller, and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor. Higgins is determined to transform Eliza into a sophisticated lady through tutoring, but as she blossoms and discovers her true self, we question who is truly being transformed. Adding to the excitement, Showbiz has partnered with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, ensuring live music accompanies this incredible production.

“We at Christchurch Symphony Orchestra are over the moon to be partnering with Showbiz Christchurch on this wonderful production of the iconic My Fair Lady. After two postponements over the last three years, it seems that the third time we have finally made it ‘to the church on time’. We have no doubt that this sublime production will delight Ōtautahi and Waitaha audiences as much as it delights us to finally see the curtain lifted,” says CEO of Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Dr Graham Sattler.

All facets were timely, open and honest and we always felt comfortable. Cameron’s experience and professionalism came to the fore during the auction process - the strategy meeting and the auction itself. Extremely well done.

LOVING PREBBLETON

life

Sales Manager, Grace Hickland, has been with Summerset for five years and has welcomed hundreds of Cantabrians into retirement living. “When residents tell you on the down low that they’ve got the best villa in the village, you know you’ve done your job well as it’s the best villa for them ”

COMMUNITY YOU CAN COUNT ON

Community is key when it comes to village life. New friendships, new activities, and for some it provides a whole new lease on life. The first people to move into a village usually become driving forces behind the residents’ committee, welcoming new residents and getting involved in events. Quite often, once residents have settled into their new homes, they can’t wait to invite their friends along to live in the village. Because at the end of the day, what is better than living with like-minded people, who want to celebrate every day of a well-earned retirement?

The community spirit has evolved naturally, with residents happy to put themselves out there and welcome new people into their circles. “Our residents have organised their own walking group once a week around Prebbleton’s nature park, we’ve had residents watering their neighbours vege gardens if they are away on holiday or dropping them off to the airport. None of our residents knew each other nine months ago and now many of them have buddied up like they have been friends their whole life,” said Grace.

Village life levels up when the village centre opens. Prebbleton’s village centre will include a bar, pool table, hair salon, indoor pool and spa, cinema and café. These facilities become central to host village events, including concerts, resident meetings, and celebrations of all kinds.

Once complete, the village centre will also house care, memory care and serviced apartments.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS

Summerset homes are modern, bright and offer spacious open-plan living, designed with everything you could need for the perfect retirement lifestyle with the assurance of additional care options in the future if required.

Often the most sought-after location in a village, a range of two and three bedroom homes are available for occupation on the border of the village along Springs Road. These homes offer views outside of the village and are the best option if you’re looking for a home not surrounded by neighbours.

Summerset villages are designed to give every home optimal sun, “everyone loves sun, and space. We’ve got different floor plans to suit everyone’s needs. With Prebbleton we’re quite lucky with our land size, it has allowed us to create more open space in between our villas. So, you can have a really lovely outlook and not feel boxed in,” said Grace.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the village, get in touch with Grace today on 03 353 6312.

PRECIOUS PIECES PROTECTED

All too often today’s burglar will remove the home safe entirely from the wall rather than waste time wrestling with combinations. The soundest solution is a purpose-built vault, such as Commonwealth Vault.

This state-of-the-art facility is protected by tiers of enhanced security measures, such as biometric scanning, and 24/7 remote surveillance.

The safe deposit boxes are also wrapped in layers of security, making the facility virtually impregnable.

Christchurch Branch Manager Kent Galpin advises that with precious metals, such as gold and silver, if stolen from a home safe (which are rarely recovered) there is no insurance.

FOR A UNIQUE NIGHT OUT?

h idays head west for the

This will be the last chance to go on a decent family trip before the hectic end-of-the-year period kicks o . Use this as time for the whole family to take a proper break.

Why not check out the West Coast?

Start your journey in the quaint town of Hokitika. There you can explore the vibrant galleries, where local artisans showcase their talents, and immerse yourself in the world of jade carving, a craft deeply rooted in Māori culture.

For a leisurely day, stroll around Paroa’s Shantytown Heritage Park, and visit nearby Greymouth. Highlights include 30 historic buildings, heritage train and traditional confectionery store and check out the black beaches.

For something to excite the kids, ziplining through the dense rainforests or biking along the West Coast Wilderness Trail o ers an adrenaline rush against a backdrop of untamed nature.

Drive north on State Highway 6 to check out the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, the unique limestone formations and blowholes are a sight to see. Time your visit to witness the waves crashing against these ancient rocks.

Just out of Westport is the Tauranga Bay Seal Colony. A quick 10-minute walking track from the car park leads to viewing platforms directly overlooking the colony.

If you want to start further south, don’t forget to check out the Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier. These popular shrinking ice formations will leave you and the little ones awestruck. Guided glacier hikes and helicopter rides provide a chance to get even better views and photographs.

Throughout the trip, the West Coast’s warm hospitality and rugged beauty will make this school holiday family trip an unforgettable experience.

Framed for summer sun

Are you set for summer holidays?

There is nothing like a new pair of sunnies to lift the mood and invite you to spend more time outdoors. And if you need a little bit of support, prescription sunglasses are a great way to feel confident in the sunshine. Increased global awareness around the need for UV protection is driven by people becoming more knowledgeable about myopia (short sightedness), cataracts and glaucoma, and the importance of healthy eyesight.

The team at Anstice Optometrists are ready to help you find your best look and outdoor protection for the warm weather on its way. “Having fun with brand, design, and colour is the way to go,” says Whitney Power, from Anstice Optometrists.

Whether it’s the latest oversized frame like the Jackie OHH (Ray-ban), white cat eye (Barbie’s pick from Prada), more utility (Oakley Whisker), or the classic Top Gun Aviator, there is always a frame waiting to go on an adventurous journey with you.

FUN

Christchurch’s longest mini-golf course winds through a jungle-themed landscape filled with giant dinosaurs.

The 18 holes are suitable for all ages and are fully accessible, a first for New Zealand. Kids can enjoy the Dino Dig, where they excavate dinosaur fossils. Facebook reviewers love this a ordable, fun, and clean park where the water is clear, sunscreen is free, and the dinosaurs come to life.

The park’s creator, shares his passion for theme parks and dinosaurs, making Jurassic Adventure a dream come true.

“Normally, as an adult, you’re told to grow up, but when you get to run a place like this, you don’t have to,” he says.

The Raptor Run, a maze doubling as laser tag, is a hit. Players become poachers or gamekeepers, hunting, or protecting raptors in the maze. The positive response has him considering adding a mini coaster.

Jurassic Adventure o ers a great deal. Buy a Raptor Run ticket and get mini-golf tickets at half price.

Experience the Mesozoic era at Jurassic Adventure, 239 Opawa Road, Christchurch, or book your adventure online.

In the Acre Wood Hundred

On September 22, the James Hay Theatre will become the Hundred Acre Wood.

Aaron Keown, the ‘Walt Disney of Christchurch’ brings us Pooh Bear Live, celebrating 100 years of our favourite honey-loving bear.

“I want to entertain people. To give audiences something they don’t currently have,” Aaron mentions.

He describes the show as nothing less than “stepping into the pages of a book,” the A.A. Milne classic. Aaron, who has visited Milne’s house and the Hundred Acre Wood himself, was, understandably, the right man for the job. He says the show blends comedy and a strong storyline to bring a high-quality, high energy performance. Taking inspiration from the Kiwi Shrek director, Andrew Adamson, Aaron has crafted material “that kids love and adults enjoy.”

With various magic tricks, illusions, songs, dance routines, and a few new characters along the way, this life-size show is set to become a revitalised imagining of the story we know and love.

The show is selling fast, so get your tickets now.

With the bi-annual Akaroa French Festival postponed in 2022 due to Covid-19, the staging of this year’s festival is hugely significant to the local community. Luke Dawkins, marketer for the event, says the festival is about celebrating and recognising Akaroa’s place in New Zealand history.

“Akaroa is the only French-settled town in New Zealand, and the history that comes with that is something unique and remarkable.”

The festival curtain rises Friday at 5pm with a powhiri.

Marché de Nuit (The Night Market) then gets underway – this is where to find the crème-de-la-crème of food and wine vendors, while enjoying live music and dancing.

Soak up the atmosphere at Café Monet, while sipping a French gin cocktail and dining on delicious French fare.

The Landings, a historic re-enactment celebrating Akaroa’s early settlers, takes place on the main beach, Saturday morning.

Le Parade follows, with descendants

of the ship Comte de Paris and locals all marching together, followed by the o cial opening and speeches.

Le Chapiteau De La Culture features variety acts on the Heritage Marquee stage, with arts and culture stalls happening around the perimeter.

Saturday night sizzles at Le Cabaret, with Le Can Can, burlesque, and comedy acts entertaining the crowds.

A sumptuous Sunday morning breakfast of French bubbles, bacon, and hot croissants revives those night-before livers.

The Festival Market opens again Sunday, as does live music at the Festival Rotunda.

La Brocante (The Antiques and Collectables Vintage Fair), the French Fancy Pooch Parade, and Le Cirque du Croissant, all contribute to make for an unforgettable family funday-Sunday.

The unmissable Le Cabaret and madcap Le Cirque du Croissant are both ticketed festival events.

She says seeing customers smiling from cheek-to-cheek with a new purchase that they love and the environment loves too, is the best part of the job. “I love seeing people’s faces after they’ve bought something they love.”

The meaning behind the space comes with a strong environmental impact. Rana wanted to make others aware of the fashion industry’s waste, so building something that kept fashion, homeware and décor circulating was the way to make a change.

Olive and Wendy’s wonderful day

Last October, Wendy Babe, had a “wonderful” day exploring central Christchurch by bicycle with son Lawrence, and granddaughter Olive (then aged 3).

We discovered things we hadn’t noticed in a car, says Wendy. They used Biketober’s Whanau Passport webapp to find child-friendly places of interest.

All destinations can be reached via safe bike lanes and shared paths.

From her special seat on dad’s bike, Olive had a great time. “She loved the animation that stamped her virtual passport at each stop.”

This year, Olive is big enough for her own bike, and her cousins (aged 4 and 6) are coming too. “I think the six-year-old will just love it,” says Wendy. “He’ll be out in front.”

Biketober’s Whanau Passport runs 1-8 October inclusive. It’s free, with great prizes on o er (though Wendy says the best prize was the family-time). Families can even join free guided rides with cycle coach Paul Odlin.

Fostering gender diversity in the start-up landscape, the Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund recently distributed $48,000, including $10,000 each to Lucy Pink from Onyou, Jamie Tucker from Laughing Pukeko, and Vicki Ledergerber from Vortek.

In New Zealand, only one in five start-ups is led by women, and the majority of venture capital goes to men. This fund seeks to address some of this imbalance and provide a stepping stone for female entrepreneurs to succeed.

Joy Shivas, the donor behind the initiative, believes a financial safety net will ensure female entrepreneurs feel supported as they take the leap into their new venture.

Christchurch Foundation Chief Executive, Amy Carter encourages women about to embark on an entrepreneur incubator programme to apply the fund, which aims to alleviate financial

How do I keep up with new listings?

We often get asked – how can we keep up with new business listings being brought to the market?

Once you have identified a Business Broker who has listings which you are interested in, it pays to bookmark that Broker and search their listings regularly.

For example, for Cecilia Xiao, visit: https://nai.harcourts.net/nz/office/nai-christchurch-city-commercial/people/cecilia-xiao

For Athol McCully, visit: https://nai.harcourts.net/nz/office/nai-christchurch-city-commercial/people/athol-mccully-b-agr-sc

In both cases, once you visit these links, press the View More button to see all listings for each Broker. This way you will keep updated on new listings (which can change significantly each week). Alternatively make contact with us and advise what you are seeking, and we will send you details of new listings matching your search criteria.

burdens and enable female entrepreneurs to devote their full attention to nurturing their fledgling companies.

“We believe in the power of women to shape the future through entrepreneurship,” says Amy. “The Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund provides a platform for female visionaries, from across Christchurch, Selwyn, and Waimakariri, to thrive, overcome barriers, and realise their potential.”

Applications for the next round of grants will open later in 2023. Anyone interested should subscribe to The Christchurch Foundation’s newsletter via their website www.bettercity.nz

It won’t happen fast

The Reserve Bank has left the official cash rate (OCR) unchanged at 5.5, highlighting its July stance that it was high enough to keep slowing inflation.

While some indications are that it may move up slightly, the recent fall in dairy price, significant fall in retail spending and other such factors are what they are looking for, a technical recession – despite us being there for six months already.

With this in mind, it would further indicate we are at the peak of interest rates, with only one way for them to come, down.

This won’t happen as fast as they rose, however. While we can expect to see this drop from early-mid 2024 it is important to remember there are multiple ways to change and extend your mortgage.

For those who are struggling, have lost the return on their rental or are in a position that isn’t sustainable, now is the time to reach out.

Predict a problem before there is a problem and let us help you through.

Content is king

Take a look at your website. Does it have high-quality, relevant content that provides value to your viewers?

If you don’t, you may run into a few problems. As the years go by, our attention span seems to go with it. With the surge in popularity of short-video content from apps like TikTok and Instagram, it is now important more than ever to have content that captures the attention of your potential customers. Your website is a good starting point, but good quality content across all forms of communication is crucial. Here are a couple key benefits.

1. Establishing credibility

If your website visitors come across content on your website and encounter high-quality blogs, articles and engaging and informative information, they’re more likely to stay on your website. Not only this, but it’ll begin to establish a high level of credibility and trust with your website viewers as they trust you to be a reliable source of information. Ultimately, that means that you’re more likely to build long-lasting relationships with your customers.

2. Enhancing search engine optimisation (SEO)

Google will prioritise your website in the search rankings if it is high-quality, relevant, and valuable for the viewer. I hear from clients all the time about how they can jump up the rankings, and while there’s no quick fix, my answer is to kickstart this process is always related to content. This is because Google struggles to index your website if the ratio of content to coding is too far apart (ideal is 25:70). This means that you need to find that balance between having too little or too much content.

Work injuries rife in NZ

Why is it that New Zealand is an unbelievably dangerous place to work?

Statistics NZ say there were just over 223,000 work-related claims in 2021, which is almost one in 10 workers being injured in some way. A good example of the problem is the recent prosecution of Clyde Orchards.

They were prosecuted over an injury to a young man who su ered lifelong injuries to his hands with three fingers needing to be amputated, plus other injuries. Total penalties were a little over 1/4 million dollars. WorkSafe did an investigation on the orchard in 2017 and found another conveyor to be unsafe, which Clyde Orchards fixed.

But nobody did anything about the other conveyors, and I would say the end result was quite predictable. A worker tried to clear a blockage, and his hands got trapped inside the conveyor; there was no mechanism or way to stop the machine, and the results were tragic.

Clyde Orchards have replaced the conveyor and have significantly improved their health and safety systems which is great. I am not victim blaming in any way but let me make a comment about workers in New Zealand generally. Having worked in farming, forestry, and construction, I am (now) amazed at some of the utterly stupid stunts we used to get up to. I think there is a residue of that attitude with workers today - they just do not take their own safety and the safety of others seriously enough.

Every worker is entitled to refuse to carry out unsafe work although, sadly, with a boss yelling at you, that is a rare occurrence.

Agile workspaces

Did you know that approximately 64 percent of business premises are the wrong size or designed inefficiently?

Modern workplaces have evolved significantly during the past three years, catering for di erent work styles, hours and needs. Enter the hybrid – or agile –workplace.

Essentially these digitally enhanced spaces support hybrid work forces and also new work styles.

To support those environments, today’s workplace demands require a new approach to organising and right-sizing business real estate, whether you need to bring everyone back, just a few, or to implement a customised hybrid programme.

Why go agile? Recent research showed that many businesses globally are using as little as 20 percent of their o ce space, now that more people are remote working, spaces were found to be the wrong size, or not designed e ciently, indicating huge ine ciencies in use and related costs.

Ricoh NZ designs, configures and rolls-out digital workspaces, enabling business teams to collaborate e ectively and get more out of their day, wherever they work. This also makes it easier to engage with customers remotely using Microsoft Teams and Zoom technology.

It’s not only about big ideas and it’s not only about thinking outside the square. Small ideas are just as powerful. To find out how to achieve big leaps through small steps, give me a call on 021 675 873.

Top millionaire cities

Only one European city, London, made it on to the 2023 list published recently by international investment migration firm Henley & Partners, in conjunction with global wealth intelligence firm New World Wealth.

New York City wears the crown as the wealthiest in the world with 340,000 millionaires, while the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles rank third and sixth, with 285,000 and 205,400 resident high-net-worth

individuals, respectively. High-networth individuals are defined as those with investable wealth of over USD 1 million and all figures are rounded o to the nearest 100.

Tokyo, which led the pack 10 years ago, fell to 2nd place with 290,300 millionaires, and London, the wealthiest city in the world for many years, dropped 4th place with 258,000 resident high-net-worth individuals.

Singapore ranks fifth with 240,100 resident millionaires, while Sydney

comes in 10th place with 126,900 millionaires. Home to some of the world’s most exclusive residential suburbs, Sydney has experienced especially strong wealth growth over the past 20 years, and is projected to break into the global Top 5 wealthiest cities by 2040.

China has three cities in the Top 10, with Hong Kong (129,500 millionaires), Beijing (128,200), and Shanghai (127,200) taking 7th, 8th, and 9th places, respectively.

POWERFUL 25 YEARS

EST: 1998

Metropol has partnered with many of Canterbury’s successful and longstanding businesses during the past 25 years. As we celebrate this milestone, we want to highlight some of the people who have trusted us to provide a direct line to their customers. To our valued clients and readers, we extend our heartfelt gratitude, and eagerly anticipate bringing you many more exciting magazines in the future. A huge thank you.

“Bellbird Hearing has been advertising with Metropol since we opened our clinic on Ilam Road in September 2020. Advertising with Metropol has helped us reach more customers. We are passionate about all things hearing and strive to help as many Cantabrians as possible to hear better. Like Metropol, we pride ourselves on high-quality products and services. We’re also locally owned and an independent business, just like Metropol. Our editorials in the magazine really help to increase the awareness of our business, but also hearing loss in general.”

“Our relationship with Metropol has fortified our place in the Christchurch and Canterbury market, and we have identified many positive results from advertising in Metropol over a number of years. The sta work consistently hard in targeting our marketing messages to suit the Metropol demographic, making sure our advertisements are the most beneficial for their audience. Our area manager, Louise, has always been easy to deal with and work with. The magazine distribution areas fit perfectly into Readylawn’s target market.”

“For around six years, we’ve been advertising in Metropol and have thoroughly enjoyed the relationship we have with the team, especially Denise who keeps in regular contact to let us know what’s coming up. In our industry, it can be di cult to know if your advertising is e ective, but with Metropol we regularly get customers commenting on the adverts and editorials that they’ve seen. We’ve even had someone come into the store clutching an old copy of the magazine to discuss their requirements. The popularity of the magazine is evident in the way it flies out the door within a couple of days of a new issue coming out.”

Catwalk collections

New Zealand Fashion Week showcased the best of Kiwi labels, old and new, with relaxed silhouettes, plenty of ruffles, and loose, easy-to-wear styles at the forefront.

From flowing maxi skirts to unstructured, lightweight dresses, loose-fitting trousers, and flatter footwear, the looks shifted between androgyny and femininity.

Popping among the neutral hues were shades of pink, bold blues, reds, oranges, and greens ranging from mint to seafoam and sage. Other catwalk trends include metallic accessories, lots of florals, occasional sparkle, and upcycled textiles such as duvets, tablecloths and crochet doilies.

Designers included Juliette Hogan, Nom*D, Kathryn Wilson, Kate Sylvester, J Bush, Jacqueline Anne, Rory Docherty, Campbell Luke, Kiri Nathan and new generation talent Lydia Paine, Taylor Pumphrey, Dawei Zhang of Dollie Vardin, Jonty Blakely of Vadar, Ayano Hara-Alderson, to name a few.

Consider booking a deep conditioning treatment in the weeks leading up to your wedding. This will help nourish and strengthen your hair, leaving it soft and shiny.

If you colour your hair, schedule a touch-up appointment about a week before the wedding to ensure your hair looks fresh and vibrant.

BOB, PIXIE, AND BIXIE

Hair styles come and go, often a re-invention of a previous fashionable cut.

Take “Bob” and “Pixie” cuts, for example. This spring and summer, along with short crops and bobs, we have the “Bixie”, a combination of both. Bobs are shorter, with a square length, cropped fringes, internal layers and wispy face framing texture.

New Zealand Fashion Week models showcased blunt bobs, major curls, and sleek ballerina buns. European and American fashion houses featured bohemian waves, sleek ponytails and ballerina buns, and lots of side parts.

Here are some top trends:

‘90s face framing

Layers add texture and volume, in a style made famous by Jennifer Anniston (aka Rachel Green) on TV sitcom Friends. A low maintenance style, it works well with curly, wavy or straight hair types.

Micro bob

Bobs are a timeless, classic style from shoulder-length and shaggy to ultra-short and polished. Micro bobs are everywhere, if you dare, and for an extra edgy cut add a micro fringe.

The Pixie

A versatile style, the pixie cut can be styled in numerous ways, from wispy and playful to an ultra-shiny wet look.

High-volume curls

Curls, the bigger the better are everywhere. Crimpy, voluminous curls are a big trend for 2023, so ditch those straighteners.

Longevity builds trust

Invest

They’re something that are worth the investment, although it’s worth making sure the product you invest in is the right decision.

Dr Ronald Sluiter, has been perfecting teeth for decades, and is the founder of Christchurch’s OrthodontiX clinics, which o er a range of di erent ways to straighten teeth.

As technology develops, new options come available in the market for building a beautiful smile. Angel Aligner joins Invisalign in using expert innovation to straighten teeth, just as braces do, with invisible inserts and much less hassle.

Angel Aligner is a case by case treatment and comes with a flexible schedule, while being a cheaper alternative to other products like Invisalign. The brand “redefines invisible orthodontic treatment,” to e ciently, yet gently, move teeth into the right position over time.

Dr Sluiter says it can often be helpful to consider alternatives. “There are big brands, but sometimes other players may prove valuable as well.” Each clear aligner combines self-adaptive material for tooth-movement control and innovative material for complex movements and fracture resistance.

For advice on the best option for you, contact and book with OrthodontiX, your local orthodontic specialists.

As I’ve shared my news, I’ve been on the receiving end of incredible anecdotes and memories from my friends and family, both in person and shared online, an almost cinematic montage of my life through old photos, videos, and beautiful messages and “remember when we did that” and people have been unafraid to reach out and be vulnerable and cry openly and share their own grief about what’s next for me.

I can assure you that not one person has said “Wow, what about that incredible spreadsheet you put together” or “Remember that one time you actually wore lipstick” or “What about when you lost that 5kg”, because deep down we all know those things Just. Don’t. Matter.

Take some time out in the coming days to think about what brings you joy and most importantly WHO makes you truly happy. Carve out time for them. Try not to get in the never-ending spiral of “we must catch up for dinner” and put

something in the diary and go and laugh and raise each other up and, if you really do want to put it o , ask yourself why.

I’ve been involved in sports at various levels over the years, and I could hardly tell you the details of one game, but I can always recall riding the highs and the lows with my teammates and bonding over missing home. Sport brought us together, but the friendships that have endured the years following have nothing to do with how skilful we were or weren’t. It started with connection.

I recognise in my final weeks that life boils down to simple things, and it’s never about an asset or what’s in your wardrobe, or on your driveway. All I need and want right now is my friends and family around me, and to be able to savour every morsel of food that I put in my mouth. It could be the last.

So, if you’ll let me, I have some parting advice. Think about what brings you joy and most importantly WHO makes you truly happy. Carve out time for them.

Eat the cake. Try not to sweat the small stu . Tell people openly you love them. Be vulnerable. They will hopefully tell you. They might just remember you by that one time you made them smile or feel less awkward. Maybe you can die ultimately content like I will soon. That might just be the greatest gift we can take with us in the end.

Rejuvenate with Kiwi supplements

Still out there

Current statistics show that 1 in 10 people who get Covid-19 will still have symptoms 12 weeks after infection.

Catherine George of The Lung Mechanic says that with up to 200 symptoms suggesting Long Covid, often it is a case of diagnosis by exclusion.

“The four main symptoms of Long Covid, that I see, are breathlessness, coughing, chest pain, and fatigue,” Catherine explains.

Catherine says people often think pushing through the illness, such as a long walk in the fresh air, is the cure, but this can create post exertional fatigue which makes symptoms worse.

Self-management, such as improving breathing patterns, has been shown to calm the nervous system, and reduce breathlessness and coughing. Pacing techniques and fatigue management are also essential.

“There is currently no cure for Long Covid, but seeing a respiratory physiotherapist and learning well researched techniques support your recovery.” Book an appointment with The Lung Mechanic if you have concerns about Long Covid or breathlessness.

Take care of yourself, recover from the season, and get ready for the warmer months by nourishing your body with vitamins and supplements. Supplements to consider include collagen, which supports glowing skin, nail, hair, bone and tendon health, and vitamin C to boost your immune system. You should also consider a daily multivitamin – these help to release energy from the foods you eat, and provide antioxidants to protect your cells from damage.

Karl Peterson is owner of Kiwi Health 2020, providers of some of New Zealand’s best supplements. He says that one of their most popular products is their keto powder. “It promotes the body to enter ketosis, which may help to increase the breakdown of fat,” Karl says. “Keto powder is also used to help improve mental clarity, digestion, and energy.”

He also notes his gratitude for supporters of the business saying, “We’re happy with the many customers we’ve had in the greater-Canterbury region since the company was established in 2017.”

WINTER CONCUSSION RECOVERY

Experience the benefits of craniosacral therapy at the end of the winter sports season.

Gill Redden sees many clients who have had a head knock during the winter season. Now is an ideal time to allow your body to recover from the rigours of winter sports.

Winter sports can take a toll on your body, especially your head and neck. That's why receiving CranioSacral therapy can be incredibly beneficial for five reasons:

Injury Prevention

Potentially reduce the risk of future injuries by helping alleviate tension and release restrictions in the cranial and spinal areas, and in the membranes that surround and protect the brain.

Concussion Recovery

Aid in the recovery process by potentially: unjamming cranial bones, and untwisting membranes, restoring balance and function to the central nervous system, promoting healing, and reducing symptoms associated with concussions.

Pain Relief

Potentially relieve muscle soreness, joint sti ness, and general body discomfort

by addressing imbalances in the CranioSacral system, and improving overall body alignment.

Stress Reduction

You can potentially reduce stress, anxiety, and tension, accumulated during winter sports activities through deep relaxation and stimulation of the body's natural healing mechanisms.

Enhance Performance

CranioSacral therapy can potentially improve coordination, balance, and overall performance in winter sports by optimising the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and enhancing communication between the brain and the rest of the body.

Remember, CranioSacral therapy is only performed by a qualified practitioner trained in this specific modality such as specialist Gill Redden. CranioSacral therapy could be part of your personal wellness programme post-winter sports especially if you have had a head knock or su ered from a concussion this season.

Contact Gill to discuss how she supports you in your recovery and wellbeing.

A HELPING HAND

Job hunting is so challenging, wouldn’t it be nice to have our hand held throughout?

But we’re adults, right? We just need to put on our big girl or boy pants and face down the fiery employment dragon. Actually no. St George is ready on your doorstep o ering a great deal more than hand holding when you are in the market for a great job.

At EnableWorks, Career Consultant Kelsey Voisin is keen to help, wherever you are in your career, and with any part of the process of securing work. “Anyone can find themselves needing a job,” says Kelsey, “whether you are a school leaver, re-entering from parental leave, redundant, or returning to work after illness or injury, climbing the ladder or moving internally within your current company, I can help you get to where you want to be. “

Kelsey has been working in the careers space for eight years. She has run various ACC programs such as Back to Work and Job Search programmes and has had many years working in the private sector as well with individuals.

Kelsey says her greatest strength is tailoring her services to clients’ individual needs and life stage. “I have assisted every age group seeking full or part time work, and I will help with all or any particular part of the job seeking process,” she says,

“I can be there with you through an application process, work on your C.V. and cover letter and seek feedback on those, optimise your LinkedIn profile, work with you in preparation for employment, or prepare you to the point where you can be autonomous in your search.

“The role of a Career Consultant is varied but the goal is always the same - to help people and give them the tools they need to succeed,” says Kelsey, “I use my knowledge of the labour market, trends, and personal marketing to support you to go to where you want to be in the world of work.”

Kelsey says anytime is a good time to come in and see her, whether you need a job immediately or are planning a return to work in a few months. Solutions focussed, Kelsey works collaboratively with clients on their goals, and helps them to define goals if they are feeling stuck. “I believe every person has something special they bring to the table. The biggest hurdle can be discovering which direction an individual wants to move in and where to start – and that is what I am here for.”

WEDDING

Kate & Mike James Image by Ryan McCauley

Be yourself bride

Onebride might want lots of detail, with lace and sequins, while another bride might want something pared down and simple.

Wilkins Bridal brings every bride the dress of her dreams – such as rustic chic, boho bride, sensual sexy, modern metallic, rainbow love, glamour, A-line, destination, plus size, and so many more dress categories.

Bridesmaid and made-to-measure Mother-of the-Bride collections are also instore to provide a complete dress plan for the entire bridal party.

Owner April Meredith says one point of di erence is that every figure is catered for, with sizes ranging from 7-36, with an emphasis on an “Every Body/Every Bride” programme.

This programme has been masterfully designed and expertly crafted – prioritising construction and comfort in every silhouette for the most flattering fit for all shapes and sizes of brides.

“We like to ensure there is something for everyone, from your traditional brides to your destination brides, to your rainbow love brides, all who desire to look their most beautiful for their partners on their big day.

“We also encourage the bride to get up close to the dresses and touch them, which is so important. Often the bride will choose 20 styles that she likes and from there we can slowly whittle down to what will become the one.”

Wedding dress designer Jenny Lea, of Jenny Lea Designs, works instore. Jenny designs her own gorgeous bridal creations, and also does bride, bridesmaid, and mother-of-the bride dress alterations.

58
Unlike the brides of yesteryear, today’s bride wants her wedding dress to represent who she is and what is important to her.

“To have your complete bridal attire and a quality alteration service all under the one roof makes life so much easier for the bride and her bridal party,” April says.

Alongside the New Zealand-made Jenny Lea dresses, are international renowned bridal labels, such as Martina Liana, Essense of Australia, All Who Wanders, Stella York, and dedicated bridesmaid label Sorella Vita.

Bridesmaid trends for 2023 see a continuum of matching colours and fabrics but with di ering styles, which allows bridesmaids to look the part yet feel entirely comfortable in a style that suits them. Wedding dress trends this season see a focus on bows, splits in dresses, and an architectural-type shaping that is sophisticated and elegant.

Around 90% of brides still wear veils and currently in vogue are single veils that sit at the nape, rather than the crown of the head.

Floral motifs

Oversized floral motifs stole the show on recent bridal show runways. This modern take on a classic bridal style o ers a breath of fresh air for brides looking to push the boundaries of tradition in a whimsical yet feminine way.

Pretty Pastels

More designers are experimenting with colour, which is certainly a reason to celebrate for any brides out there looking for something other than white. Pastels are proving popular from small hand-painted flowers to full pastel tulle ball gowns, with pastel blue revealed to be the most popular.

Maximalism

Sequins and sparkles are now adorning gowns. While there are always understated options in many bridal designer’s lines, next year there will be a strong glam presence. As they say, more is more.

Back to black

Contrary to tradition the black dress is becoming increasingly popular among Gen Z brides who are undoing the rules when it comes to wedding fashion. (Peek at the Wilkins Bridal pages on 58-59 to spy some local black dresses)

Bridal gloves

Falling on the accessory side, bridal gloves are worth mentioning as making a comeback. Whether you opt for vintage vibes or satin luxe, wearing gloves is a perfect way to add a touch of drama to your bridal look.

Steam

is in, or more particularly a revolutionary tried and true garment steamer that takes away the hassle of ironing. Even on the most delicate fabrics, the Propress MINI clothing steamer smooths creases, restores shape and removes odours to keep garments looking fresh at all times. It’s also tough on germs and easy to maintain.

Christchurch-based New Zealand distributor, Bruce Moore says that for more than 40 years Propress steamers have been the first choice for fashion designers, fabric care companies, and top High Street fashion stores.

“The robust yet lightweight design, combined with outstanding performance and power is what makes Propress the steamer people aspire to, and now it’s available in a sleek portable handheld option, using either a standard slimline tank or the unique Big Belly tank for larger jobs,” he says.

“There’s no need for an ironing board, steam straight on the hanger. The Mini clothes steamer is ready to use in just 45 seconds.”

Bruce explains that the steamer’s e ectiveness comes from its coated sole plate, which when heated gives it twice the performance, dispersing the steam e ectively, relaxing fabric, and quickly confirming creases and pleats. The sole plate can also be used as a dry iron.

“It removes odours by killing 99.9% of bacteria that create musty smells on fabrics, while still being extremely gentle, and is so compact, it’s a great travelling essential.

Other advantages, Bruce says, include a button for controlled steam on demand, or double press for continuous steam delivery without holding the button down.

“This makes it ideal for use on larger garments, especially attaching the Big Belly tank to extend the steaming time. The Big Belly is designed to simply clip on to your Propress MINI instead of the standard slimline water tank. This increases steaming time from 7 to 13 minutes, making it a versatile choice even for more demanding steaming tasks. For more information call Bruce on 0274 341 433 or email info@propress.co.nz

Let them eat cake

Choosing your wedding cake will be a joyous time.

The showroom is sunny and inviting, and the wedding cake-makers are filled with infectious enthusiasm, revelling in what they do. When you work with these amazing artists, your cake can’t help but be unique and stunningly creative.

At Twisted Flour and Sugar Merchants, everything is extraordinary. “Weddings can be stressful, but we insist that designing and creating your cake is fun and thrilling,” says Kate Podmore, one half of the incredibly talented mother and daughter duo. “We find out what our couples want their day to look and feel like, what they do, how they met, and their interests.”

“Don’t expect stock standard. We are di erent, we are out there,” says Sally Holt. “Our name says it all, we like to have fun with our couples.” The pair are quietly chu ed that the era of restraint and minimalism is now a bit old hat. “If you tend to follow the crowd, we will discover the real you and help you dare to be di erent,” says Kate.

It doesn’t mean you can’t have an all-white cake though.

“Some of our most gorgeous cakes are white, plus we have imaginative ways of arranging stunning white flower displays,” says Kate, “and we are noticing older styles making a comeback. The Lambeth style which is almost Victorian and hasn’t been around for years is complete understated elegance.”

There is no such thing as a typical Twisted Flour and Sugar client. “We work with very young brides to more mature couples, sometimes on their second or third marriage,” says Sally. “It’s all about your dream cake, and us making it a reality.”

A wonderful setting

Bridal couples invariably have a vision of a beautiful location for their weddings – a special place that reflects their personalities, and that will create memories to last a lifetime.

It may be a wedding on a beach, in a vineyard or in an historic building. Or it might be a stunning country garden. The latter vision can be truly realised with a wedding at Broadoak Gardens, a New Zealand Garden Trust listed garden in Ohoka.

Broadoak has been a labour of love over many years for its owners Shaun and Claire Maloney. From a near bare farm block back in 1999, they have created a two-acre English-style garden inspired by the great garden estates of England, but replicated in miniature. This is a garden that shows itself at its best during the ideal wedding season of October – March. Crab apple blossoms are in abundance, along with wisteria, peonies, roses, rhododendrons, camellias, and hydrangeas.

“We have the settings here for every aspect of a wedding, from a formal garden just right for the ceremony, to wonderful nooks and crannies for photographs,” say Shaun and Claire. Indeed photographers love this garden with its many sculptures and other art work by renowned New Zealand artists, perfect for posing alongside. Shaun also has a collection of classic cars on-site that are definitely photogenic.

Broadoak can host up to 80 guests for a wedding. There is a small cottage in the garden that makes a wonderful space for the bride and her attendants to get ready for the day. They can then walk along the wide pathways to where the guests and celebrant are waiting in front of a small chapel facade with picturesque

stained glass windows. Another charming feature of Broadoak is its Old English Pub – the Bike ‘n’ Bovine – a reproduction constructed with original materials, of a pub in Warwickshire, England.

Larger wedding receptions can be held in the covered courtyard outside the pub, while smaller gatherings can utilise the pub itself, which can also be set up for a band or a DJ for dancing. Kitchen facilities are available for couples to bring in their own caterers.

“This is a unique environment that we are very proud of having brought to life,” say Shaun and Claire. “It is our great pleasure to share it with others on their special occasion.”

Your wedding guest accommodation

In the heart of Lincoln is a place perfect for your guests if you are to be wed in the Selwyn District.

Thatis the case at Ferrymead Heritage Park, home to an early 1900s township. You might opt to have your ceremony in the quite stunning 1911 heritage chapel with its original stained glass windows, and traditional wooden pews. It’s now nondenominational, so you are welcome to arrange your own celebrant and to personalise your ceremony.

Perhaps though, a ceremony on a railway station platform might provide the wedding with a di erence you could be looking for. The Heritage Railway Station is located alongside the park railway tracks in the heart of “Moorhouse Township”

The choices don’t end there. The park’s Friendly Societies Lodge is a great option for a wedding reception. French doors open out on to a delightful lake, complete with water wheel, that could be a setting for either a ceremony or for a photo shoot. And of course there is the park’s famous Wedding Tram that is not to be missed.

”We have even more outdoor locations for ceremonies or photos, says Park and Finance/HR Manager Vanessa Hale. “These include the Heritage Rose Garden, or on the jetty under the willow tree by the lake. Over the years we have been able to o er such a variety of locations to suit individual tastes that we have had generations of families marry here.”

Find Ferrymead Heritage Park on Facebook or visit the website.

Look no further than the Lincoln Motel. This well-appointed motel o ers comfortable units with modern amenities that are perfect for groups of di erent sizes. From studios to family units, there’s something for everyone.

“We love having guests stay who are attending weddings in the surrounding venues. The buzz they create in our courtyard as they gather for the big day, adds a lot of life to the motel,” says owner Craig Beswick.

The friendly and helpful sta are always on hand to ensure guests have a comfortable and enjoyable stay, and they can also provide helpful information about the local area.

Breaking tradition

The origin of modern, western wedding traditions dates back to the Victorian era, when women married in their late teens and early 20s.

Atthat time, marriage was believed to solidify a woman’s role as the homemaker, and property of her husband. Wedding day traditions such as the bride being ‘given away’ by her father and tossing her garter, reflected this.

How do modern times, where (in western society) women aren’t the property of their husbands, align with traditional ideas of how to have a wedding?

From the groom not seeing his bride on the day until the ceremony, to the bride’s family paying for the wedding, and the groom’s family, the flowers and alcoholic refreshments, plenty of wedding traditions and etiquette practices have evolved.

The dress

White dresses were made popular when Queen Victoria, chose a white silk-satin dress for her wedding to Prince Albert 176 years ago. It wasn’t long before the colour became associated with purity. White dresses are still a prominent choice, although trends are shifting slightly with alternative colour options and less conservative designs springing up (read more on page 60).

The bridal party

Having a bridal party continues to prove popular, but in 2023 more flexibility is allowed within these traditions. Many couples now opt for a mixed-gender bridal party, or none at all.

The wedding band

The tradition of wedding rings was started by the Egyptians, and wearing the wedding ring on the fourth finger comes from the belief that the vein of love ran via the fourth finger of the left hand straight to the heart. Many couples still choose to get wedding

bands to symbolise their bonds, although other options are becoming more accepted. Planting a tree, getting a tattoo on the wedding finger, or even a di erent piece of jewellery, a necklace or bracelet, it’s entirely up to the partners to decide.

The wedding cake

Traditional wedding cakes had a strange beginning. For starters, they used to be pies, containing (according to a 1685 recipe) oysters, lamb testicles, sweetbreads, a rooster comb, and pine kernels. Tasty food and celebrations have always gone together, and various cultures, have developed special wedding foods.

In the west, wedding cakes are mostly white, frosted creations, although the modern take on that special cake ranges from macaroon towers, to individual cup cakes, and cheese wheels.

When it comes down to it, if you and your partner are happy, how you choose to symbolise your love is only limited by your imagination (or lack of it).

Caring for your rings

Working Out/Sports

Before you break a sweat, it’s a good idea to take your rings o .

The materials used in diamond jewellery – platinum, gold, and white gold –are, to a certain degree, soft, so putting pressure on these metals may change their shape. If the shape of a ring is bent enough, you then risk bending the claws that hold the diamond and your diamond falling out.

Moisturising

Lotions and moisturisers may be great for your skin, but not so much for your ring, as excess build-up can diminish the brilliance and dull your stone over time. To protect your rock and ensure a cloudy layer of film doesn’t form on it, wait until your hands have completely dried before slipping your bling back on.

Primping

Cosmetics, hair sprays, and perfumes can cause a build-up of grime, weakening the natural sheen of your ring. Gently rinse rings with hot water and dishwashing liquid, then dry with a cotton or linen towel, and use a polishing cloth for a sparkling finish. Don’t forget to secure the sink when washing jewellery so nothing slips down the drain.

Swimming

Never, ever, ever wear your expensive jewellery in the ocean or in the pool. Cold water “shrinks” your fingers, making it that much easier for an already loose ring to disappear during a swim. Pool chlorine can damage and discolour the mounting of your ring and your platinum, gold, or white gold wedding band.

Cleaning

You can easily bang your rings on tough surfaces (bathroom counters, kitchen floors) while cleaning, causing serious damage to the stone and setting. You can even potentially alter a gemstone’s colour with harsh chemicals such as bleach and ammonia.

Showering

The shower can be a dangerous place for rings. They easily slip o when your fingers are slippery with soap, oily soaps will dull the finish of your diamond, and exfoliating soaps will scratch it.

Cooking

Cooking and food prep is also a major no-no for wearing rings, as germs and bacteria can easily get lodged into the ring setting. You also risk the ring slipping o when you rinse anything in the sink.

Woohoo wedding cakes

Professional baker Sam Stakenburg believes a wedding cake should be a lot more than just a cake plonked in the corner of a room.

Thegreatest asset, Sam says she brings to her business, The Sugar Room, is her eye for detail – that and her passion for baking, which started in her early childhood.

“Every cake should stand out as a showpiece, and, most importantly every cake should tell a story.”

One piece of advice Sam has for couples is to not be afraid of colour or design. “Whatever they have in mind for their cake, I want to know. It’s their big day and I’m definitely up for the challenge.”

Though her work schedule often sees early morning starts and late nights, the mother of three says what she loves about her work is how it brings happiness to others.

“I love every second, and I love every single cake that leaves my kitchen.”

Contact Sam at The Sugar Room to ensure an unforgettable, showpiece wedding cake that exceeds even the wildest of dreams.

Coffee in the works

Deb and Ian Riach, the founders and owners of Coffee Worx Coffee Roastery are expanding their now well-established coffee roasting operation in Christchurch.

In 2006 the Riach’s purchased a small boutique co ee roaster, which they rebranded as Co ee Worx. The roastery was purchased to support the expansion of their Yellow Rocket Bagels and co ee franchise, which had three outlets until earthquakes decimated the chain. They lost all three outlets in the fateful 2011 disaster, leaving them with just the co ee roaster.

Picking up the pieces Deb and Ian began again by supplying their premium co ee blends to other cafes and hospitality outlets. Their long history in the co ee industry put them in a knowledgeable position to help support new entrants to hospitality, and, after winning several awards with their co ee blends at the NZ Co ee Awards, their fledgling business began to take flight.

BLOOM Boutique Bridal Fair

Alongside the flagship Co ee Worx brand, the Riach’s developed their Heartland Brew Co ee brand to supply Trents wholesale. The co ee became popular, making it the first ranked co ee through Trents, so they decided to expand its distribution to New World and Pak ‘n Save supermarkets in the South Island.

“We have continued to thrive, and can no longer keep up with production demand,” they say. “Premium co ee continues to gain popularity with domestic and business users, so we have now leased a building next to our Christchurch distribution center and bought a larger 60kg capacity roaster. This will allow further growth of our popular brand.”

FABULOUS fennel SALADS

Able to be eaten raw, sautéed, roasted, or added to salads, soups, and sauces, fennel is a member of the carrot family, though it’s not a root vegetable. A layered, bulbous vegetable that originated in the Mediterranean, it has long been a staple in many European countries.

This is a basic salad recipe to which you can add or subtract your preferences. For instance swap flat leaf parsley for basil, or dill, add toasted pine nuts instead of walnuts, tangelos for oranges, and grains/lentils if you wish.

FENNEL

SALAD INGREDIENTS — SERVES 4

2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar

4 Tbsp Olive Oil

1 Tsp Dijon mustard

2 fennel bulbs, finely sliced

2 oranges/segmented

1/2 medium red onion/finely sliced

1 handful flat-leaf parsley

1/4 cup walnuts, roughly chopped

20 black olives

METHOD

Put the vinegar, mustard, and olive oil into a small bowl, and stir to combine.

Toss the fennel, orange, parsley, walnuts, red onion, and olives together in a large serving bowl to combine.

Drizzle with the dressing and serve.

Here in Christchurch we are fortunate to be able to sample authentic Moroccan dishes at Mosaic by Simo in Addington. During the day this eatery provides a variety of cabinet food, including favourites such as falafels, kebabs, dolmades, vegetable frittatas and a vast selection of salads. The customers’ absolute favourites for lunch are the bocadillo wraps containing meat, vegetables or salad and spicy sauce – the perfect lunch-time treat.

From 5pm Mosaic morphs into an à la carte restaurant, showing o to best advantage the traditional art works and

sucksTHIS THING REALLY WELL

Bigger is better, right? When it comes to vacuum cleaners, the answer is yes, and no. Metropol’s gadget guru Ian Knott discovers the long, and the short of it.

Long recognised as the world’s formost innovators in vacuum technology, Dyson have added an upsized version to their popular cordless stick-vacuum range, without adding any cumbersome bulk and unecessary extra weight.

The Gen5outsize™ improves on its predecessors in almost every way, having had some of the already industry-leading features re-engineered.

Firstly, there are two very obvious

di erences – the cleaning head has been made 25% wider, and the dust bin 150% larger. Allowing for better floor coverage, the larger cleaning head also detangles itself of long hair, an absolute Godsend for families with moulting teenagers. With up to 70 minutes of battery-life (depending on your choice of power setting), combined with the huge dust-bin, even the largest of houses are rendered spotless without constant emptying and long recharging times.

The powerful 250 air-watt motor along with the whole-machine HEPA filtration captures 99.99% of particles (even as minute as diesel soot).

One thing is certain, when it comes to vacuum cleaners, you tend to get what you pay for. With Dyson definitely being in the higher price bracket, you can be assured that you are buying a piece of equipment that is built to do the job, and do it well for years to come.

Interior plaster walls are fast becoming the preferred choice for high-end home owners, instead of paint and wallpaper.

Concrete is in vogue at the moment, from walls to floors, it adds a touch of class to any room.

Actual concrete can be di cult to work with, and costly, but there is an alternative – Cerano. This specially formulated material achieves a smooth finish while giving the appearance of concrete, and works well with colour, too.

Red Rock Plastering love the trend and are experts in executing it. They say the

eco-friendly product gives a better sound barrier compared to GIB and does not support the growth of mould.

“It’s ideal for creating the on-trend concrete look, and you can play with it,” says Jenna Toailoa at Red Rock. “You can add lines or your own design into it. We have a wall of it at our o ce and we’ve got a pink Cerano wall with black lines.”

The beautiful and unique finish is popular in bedrooms, o ces, and entrance ways.

It’s durable and flexible, standing the test of time.

If you’re looking for an interior refresh, are building something new, or are after commercial plastering services, look no further than the team at Red Rock Plastering – they o er no-obligation quotes to meet your project needs and budget.

THE Why

Who amongst us as parents hasn’t been driven mad with that very simple word and the repetitive nature with which it is used, often by those who are our nearest and dearest?

Cries of ‘why do I have to do it?’, ‘why can’t someone else?’, ‘why are you asking me?’ are common, and the list goes on. But now I find myself diving headfirst into the ‘Why?’ question and actually enjoying it.

I’m currently reading and working on the bigger questions the word ‘Why’ opens up as part of my own professional development and leadership undertaking.

It’s often said that when you know your ‘Why’, you know your journey and your purpose, so I’m doing my utmost to help people uncover their own ‘Why’ and I’m finding out a lot.

Some of the people I talk with either don’t know, don’t want to or don’t know how to find the clarity required to identify their true ‘Why’, believing it to be too daunting.

Other individuals are very certain and some of the articles and podcasts I’ve discovered lately have provided additional insight into this. They identify the benefits of knowing what your purpose is and how because of that knowledge you can make certain choices with confidence.

One of the standout experts in this field is Simon Sinek.

Sinek is an English-born American author and inspirational speaker.

His many publications and podcasts are readily available and have, in the case of his podcasts, been listened to by millions.

Two of his books – Start with Why and Find Your Why are excellent at providing structure and exercises aimed at helping both individuals and groups to excel, whilst also setting a platform for leadership.

One of Sinek’s main theories is that when you successfully articulate your passion, you connect with the listener’s limbic brain.

This is the part of your brain that is involved with behavior and emotions, as well as where trust and loyalty derive from.

This is so critical from a leadership perspective and leaders able to communicate to their team exactly why they do certain things have got a huge opportunity to motivate and guide others, especially if the ‘Why’ is known and supported.

At an organizational level, this also allows you to identify a strong value proposition and brand differentiation.

There are so many positives and in my professional capacity I’m regularly called on to articulate these.

The most common question being: why did you choose real estate for a career? The other is: why would I join your company and what makes it different from all the others?

Great questions and both relevant when someone is at a career crossroad.

For me, real estate started with choice, especially around how and when I worked and determining my own income potential based on those choices.

I loved the idea of flexibility and the possibility of greater financial freedom, and both have occurred.

Because of this, I’m passionate – in fact, obsessed – with helping others enjoy the same opportunities and within our company we have a great number of individuals and teams successfully scaling the heights that a career in real estate can offer due to being surrounded by incredible leaders and holistic processes.

As to why join our own particular company? It would have to be summed up in the simple saying: ‘success leaves clues’. And given our largest office, Harcourts Papanui, has just been named the most successful office in New Zealand across all real estate brands, there are certainly a lot of clues.

What for me started with a ‘why don’t I challenge myself to provide the best possible opportunity for others?’ has now become a mission that is never likely to leave me. Maybe rather than ‘Why’ it’s ‘Why Not?’. Why not try a path that could open up an entirely new world?

PHOTOS ARE FOREVER

The move into the digital age has brought with it a multitude of changes.

Technology often simplifies life, photos no longer need to be developed, printed, and placed in a photo album, they’re stored deep in the attic of our devices or on a USB stick.

Somewhere, we lost the feeling of what physical photos can do, memories of love and togetherness that breathe life back into us when we need it most.

Maria Buhrkuhl is on a mission with her photography business to reinstate the

psychological and emotion depth physical images provide. “They’re more than just pictures on the wall, or in an album. They’re a sense of place, a sense of connection with others,” she says.

A creative at heart, with a masters in fine arts photography, and years of experience as an arts and photography teacher, Maria decided to pursue her photography business full-time. Inclusive of pre-planning, photography sessions and the design process of a single image artwork or series

display to fit every home, Maria brings memories from moment to materiality. “I class my business as a full service experience,” she says.

Her skill behind the camera and teaching experience creates seamless, flexible and well-managed family, portrait, business and personal branding sessions in her photography studio and outdoor locations. Book your session today.

RESEARCH EXPLORES NEW USES FOR WOOL

New Zealand merino wool is highly valued internationally, and both the industry and the wool products made in Aotearoa now are much more varied than even five years ago.

Now sheep are not just farmed to be eaten and shorn. Thanks initially to a joint research initiative between the Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand, and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, a variety of new uses for wool fibre were explored and developed. The latter has included the development of wool particles, powders and pigments having export potential for applications as diverse as cosmetics, printing, luxury goods and personal care.

Research led to the launch of commercial development company Wool Source to evolve new products and assess market demand for the strong (cross-bred) wool innovation, along with completion of its pilot production facility to manufacture its first deconstructed wool ingredients from 100 per cent biodegradable, renewable and sustainable New Zealand strong wool. Today the company exists to commercialise and launch innovative new uses for New Zealand’s strong wool, that are good for people and the planet.

Much research today is focused on deconstructing wool to a cellular and particle level, and then reconstructing it for various product uses.

Wool is also enjoying a resurgence at a cottage industry level, and as part of sustainability initiatives.

Creating pure wool blankets, reinventing old blankets into fashionable garments, and using wool in the construction industry, are all developments bringing a spotlight back on to the country’s sheep and wool.

Here are some of the uses for this natural fibre:

• As mulch – several companies make wool pads designed as garden mulch.

• Insulation – in walls and roofs.

• Furniture and curtains – options are endless here.

• Fertiliser – broken down and re-invented.

• Skin Care, and cosmetics – from moisturisers, to lipsticks, to lanolin hand creams.

• Brick Reinforcement – added to the clay mixture for stronger, insulative bricks.

• Cleaning Material – such as polishing cloths and pads.

• Packing Material – good thick protective blankets.

w l Have the best sleep on

Abed is the most important piece of furniture in the house. It doesn’t matter what age or stage you are at, you still need a good sleep each night. Think of it as a long-term investment in yourself.” says David Henderson, director of Dreamwool Beds.

His advice is to buy a good bed and mattress as soon as you can. Don’t go for price over quality. Key to that is having the right bed and mattress, Dreamwool Beds can help. “There’s no better way to spend nights than sleeping soundly on a mattress filled with generous layers of soft, luxurious Merino wool sourced directly from select South Island farms,” David says.

Dreamwool mattresses provide optimum comfort because wool naturally absorbs moisture vapour that your body releases during sleep as a way to maintain the balance between temperature and humidity, which synthetic materials can only try to mimic. There is nothing like ensuring where you sleep is free from plastics, chemicals and other hot synthetic foams. David adds.

“The combination of pure Merino wool, natural latex infused with activated charcoal with thousands of delicate microcoils and

supportive pocketsprings, means Dreamwool mattresses provide sleepers with the perfect micro-climate for any season. Merino sheep can cope in any environment from -20 deg C to over 40 deg C thanks to it’s wool fibre, meaning you’ll get cool, moisture-wicking confidence in summer and warm, luxurious comfort in winter.

“Providing you a year round temperature neutral sleeping environment,” he adds.

To sort your perfect bed and mattress visit the Dreamwool Beds showroom at 96 Disraeli Street, Sydenham or call 0800 753 754.

Founder Louise Mackenzie says, “Cross-bred (strong) wool is an amazing natural fibre that is currently so undervalued, which is a sad state, considering it’s 100% renewable and free from microplastics.” Additionally, she explains “the possum ‘pest’ pelts we use also advocate for our endangered endemic and native species”.

Each pet toy is triple-core-bonded with three layers of heavy-duty fabrics and double-stitched, as a minimum, for added strength.

It’s worth noting, that while these toys are sturdily constructed to withstand reasonable doggo engagement and hijinks, they are soft toys and not indestructible. Primarily designed as ‘Connection’ toys, to engage, train, and reward. Louise advises. “We all know dogs just love to learn, and with the correct simple training your dog can quickly come to respect this toy as a valued ‘special’ friend.”

You have the option of choosing to opt in for squeakers or go ‘squeaker-free’ if plastic free is important to you… or simply because your dog goes crazy at the noise!

Manage Shedding

Furry pets can bring such joy and happiness, but their fur that collects on the couch or a new outfit?

Not so much.

Cats and dogs shed year-round, but shedding tends to reach its peak in the spring and autumn, making now an optimal time to figure out a plan to manage shedding. Start by brushing your dog’s or cat’s coat frequently to remove the dead hair and encourage healthy growth. Brush pets with thick double coats weekly and long-haired breeds twice a week. For ease of clean up, bush them outdoors.

Bath your dog or cat (good luck) regularly to remove dander and dead hairs. Bathing also prevents matting and dirt accumulation that can lead to increased shedding. Be sure to use a gentle shampoo that won’t dry out their skin. Prepare your home by protecting your furniture with covers that are easy to wash, train your pets to keep o furniture and keep a supply of lint rollers on hand for easy cleanup of a flu ed-up outfit.

As a pet owner, it’s unlikely that you can avoid shedding altogether. However, it’s a small sacrifice to pay for the delight of a pet’s company.

The sta at Kiwiflora Nurseries near Templeton, certainly model these attributes.

“Over the past few years we have recognised that today’s residential gardens are now limited in space to grow the trees and shrubs that might once have been grown on larger sections,” says managing director of Kiwiflora Nurseries, Nalin Gooneratne.

“We have put a great deal of e ort into researching and cultivating the types of trees and shrubs that are suitable for the needs of the new-age gardener. We have also made it easier for our customers, both wholesalers and the public, to purchase plants online or in-store from our garden centre by keeping our website updated with the range of plants we have available.”

It’s not only in its plant o erings that Kiwiflora has maintained its reputation as a very strong player in its industry. In the past year they have created a very large (5000m2) new area for their large specimen trees, and a 400m2 covered space for their retail garden centre.

“The new covered space was much needed,” say Nalin. “It makes selecting plants in any weather a pleasant experience so it fits perfectly with our emphasis on excellent customer service in everything we do.”

Expand your outdoor living

Adding a verandah, a deck, a covered porch, or pergola are all ways to gain more outdoor space, and to increase the value of your home. They will also provide shelter from the sun and rain. With a bit of planning and clever design, you’ll also be able to use your new outdoor “room” during the colder months too.

Options range from extending an existing roofline to create a new room, to adding a covered outdoor kitchen (with bar if wanted), or just having a huge deck created to lounge around on.

Building a deck that sits flush with your living area is one way to extend your space and create an outdoor-room feel. If you have the height, a deck that sits over multiple levels is a great way to break up the space, while a clever way to create the illusion of more room is to run your decking boards horizontally.

Planning the project with an expert in the field will help ensure any add-on combines seamlessly with existing structures, and are fully functional, and to the required building codes if applicable.

Outdoor rooms don’t need to be attached to a residence. Standalone pergolas are one example, she sheds, and man rooms are others. The same as creating zones inside your home, having outdoor zones will help make your space feel considered and deliberate. The general

Craig South Architecture at its best is an expression of individuality, serving and supporting a unique way of life and designed for site and context.

These include using renewable and recyclable materials, reducing the embodied energy in building materials, reducing on-site waste, and reducing the energy consumption on finished projects. Construction shapes our world, how it looks, and its impact on the natural environment, making it one of the most important industries today.

Modern, sustainable construction trends gaining momentum include:

NET ZERO BUILDINGS – A net zero building produces as much energy as it uses over the course of a year, achieved through a variety of means, including solar panels, wind turbines, and geothermal systems.

Construction typically takes into account the entire life cycle of the building, from materials sourcing and construction to ongoing energy use and waste management.

They o er significant environmental benefits, such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants, and reduced water and energy consumption. They often have lower operating costs than traditional buildings, due to their increased e ciency, and are designed to provide a healthy and comfortable indoor environment for occupants. This can lead to enhanced occupant health and well-

being, as well as increased productivity. Social and community benefits. Net zero buildings can help to create more sustainable communities by providing green space, promoting walkability, and supporting local businesses.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS – Sourced from renewable or recycled resources such as bamboo, wool, and cork, sustainable materials help to reduce the environmental impact of construction projects and can also create a more sustainable building in the long run.

Such materials are often more durable and require less maintenance than traditional materials, meaning they can save you money in the long run. They also tend to have a smaller environmental footprint than traditional building materials, making them a more sustainable choice for construction projects.

Sustainable materials can also help improve indoor air quality by reducing the o -gassing of harmful chemicals. This is especially important in green buildings, which are designed to be more energy and resource-e cient than traditional buildings. By using sustainable materials, green builders can help create a healthier and more sustainable built environment.

GREEN ROOFS – Becoming increasingly popular, green roofs are either partially or

entirely covered with vegetation, and can be used on new or existing buildings.

They’re often planted with a variety of vegetation, including sedum, grasses, shrubs, and trees. Benefits include reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reduced stormwater runo , improved water and energy e ciency lessening the need for irrigation and cooling, and extending the life of a roof by protecting it from UV rays.

PASSIVE DESIGN – Terminology for a type of design taking the local climate into account to help maintain comfortable temperatures in the building without additional heating or cooling, passive design can save energy and money.

Techniques can include orienting a building to take advantage of solar gain, and using green roofs and green walls to cool a building naturally.

Well designed, a passive building can provide thermal comfort for many years, lowered energy bills, and lower carbon emissions into the atmosphere, using nature’s heating and cooling sources, such as the sun and wind, to minimise heat gain and loss in a building.

The best way to implement passive design is when first designing or constructing a building, although some features can also be added through renovations or simple building improvements over time.

SUPERIOR LUXURY DESIGN

Architectural luxury meets ‘Passive High Performance’ in this innovative building company.

Outside of France, only one o ce building is awarded the internationally recognised Passive House Plus certification. That o ce building just happens to be the Hub of Wānaka-based building company Dunlop Builders. “We have achieved the highest standards for sustainable design and energy e ciency,” says owner Bryce Dunlop. “We are New Zealand’s first Passive House Plus certified o ce.”

The Hub features a range of building enhancements including timber portals and structures for warmth and craftsmanship. There are timber triple-glazed Germandesigned and New Zealand made windows from Thermadura, plus cork flooring, solar panels, provisions for electric vehicle charging, and extensive use of Abodo NZ

thermally modified pine timber.

The award-winning organisation was founded by third generation builder Bryce Dunlop in 2003. Dunlop Builders specialises in high-quality craftsmanship and beautiful architectural homes. Their homes are a visual integration of the company-wide ethos of mastery, responsibility, reputation, and home.

“Working in our Passive House Plus o ce for the past several months has only strengthened our conviction in the decision to pursue this pathway. It’s truly gratifying to experience first-hand the benefits of being in a high-performing, energy-e cient, and superbly ventilated building. The exceptional air quality and comfortable indoor environment have made a significant positive impact on our team’s well-being and productivity,” says Bryce.

Renowned in the south with luxury homes winning national awards, the team won the Site Safe Mental Health and Wellbeing Award in 2021. They are now keen to bring their ethos to architects and customers throughout New Zealand. “As builders who value sustainability, we believe constructing environmentally responsible buildings is undeniably the way forward. We are thrilled to lead by example, and hope to inspire more businesses to embrace the principles of Passive House, and create spaces that prioritise people, the environment, and a better future.”

the new standard in SUSTAINABLE BUILDING

Health Based Building developed Foreverbreathe Specification in response to demand for a ordable, high performance, sustainable homes.

Foreverbreathe Specification delivers exceptional air quality and energy e ciency through a sophisticated combination of high-performance materials that work together to naturally reduce indoor humidity while increasing air tightness. Materials used have been carefully selected with consideration to their long-term impact, to ensure positive outcomes for the environment, human health, and social well-being.

Health Based Building has constructed a world first Foreverbreathe Demonstration Home at 1062 Colombo St, Christchurch, to ensure you can experience the exceptional performance Foreverbreathe Specification provides. Monitoring systems are embedded in the home to capture data 24/7. Monitoring involves eight aspects of importance

to confirming Foreverbreathe Specification is delivering an a ordable high performance, healthy sustainable home.

Health Based Building investigations have confirmed more than 500kgs of toxic plastic is involved in the average domestic home, a situation with a flow-on e ect that damages the environment, and further impacts outdoor and indoor air quality. Waste management plans do not recognise the volume of hidden plastic pollution in our homes.

Only the minute percentage of waste is considered and even then, we have no answer to the problem. Foreverbreathe Specification is here to position prevention as the way to remove the homes we live in from contributing to global warming and ongoing environmental impacts.

“We invite you to visit the Foreverbreathe Demonstration Home to know more about Foreverbreathe Specification homes in use, the science and physics involved and who we involve as building professionals.” says co-founder Robin Curtis.

New Brighton GATEWAY TO

New Brighton’s $65 million revamp has moved a step closer with the closure in

The plan to address earthquake damage and improve emergency evacuation times along the main route to and from New Brighton was released earlier this year, focusing on Pages Road, east of Anzac Drive, and various surrounding streets.

Estimated to cost $65 million, the Gateway to New Brighton project involves major improvement to Pages Road, a new bridge, better tra c flow and improved safety for users of Pages Road and the surrounding streets.

Under the plan, the new bridge will be slightly north of the existing bridge. Pages Road will be aligned to the new bridge, and tra c light installed to replace the

roundabout. The lights will be slightly north of the current roundabout and the roundabout area will become a pocket park featuring the existing palm tree.

Plans include new wetlands in red-zoned land along the west bank of the river, flood protection work, the City to Sea Pathway, and new housing developments.

With the City to Sea Pathway in mind, Pages Road and the bridge will feature a four-metre-wide path for cyclists and pedestrians.

The next step is for more funding as part of the council’s long-term plan, which already has $21.2m allocated for the project. Construction is planned for the 2025/26 financial year and is expected to take about two years.

Off to Asia

I’m about to start packing my bags to head to South Korea and Japan on a trip I’m really looking forward to.

First stop I’ll be attending the 2023 World Cities Summit and Mayor Forum. It will be a great opportunity to connect with other Mayors from all over the globe and learn a thing or two about how di erent cities operate.

While in Korea I’ll also be visiting the Korean Polar Research in Incheon. I’m sure there will be a lot to take in, especially with Christchurch as a gateway to the ice.

What I’m most looking forward to is the opportunity to visit two more of our Sister Cities after having such a successful trip to Seattle earlier this year.

We’re stopping in on our Sister Cities Songpa-Gu in South Korea and Kurashiki in Japan. In Songpa-Gu I’ll be heading to the opening of the Hanseong Baekje Cultural Festival which celebrates the history and culture of the Hanseong era of Baekje dynasty with traditional music and food. The visit also coincides with a citizen’s delegation visiting Japan to mark the 50th anniversary of our Sister City relationship with Kurashiki. We have a strong and active relationship with Kurashiki with regular student exchange between cities which is so valuable.

My final stop, one of the most important, will be to Toyama to lay a wreath in memory of those young people who lost their lives in the 22 February 2011 earthquake.

There’s a lot on the itinerary and I can’t wait.

and choices

How do health systems in countries similar to Aotearoa stack up?

Ihave been doing a bit of close-up research recently on how health systems in countries whose standard of living could be compared to Aotearoa, are faring. The issues are uncannily familiar. Across the board, there are shortages of clinicians, nursing personnel, and support sta .

There seem to be feelings of discontent and under recognition across all comparable health sectors. There are continuous rumblings of industrial action, demands for increased income and reduction in work loads. There are also significant issues around transparency within systems. I also hear pressures on systems resulting in suboptimal treatment and often at the margins, with non-acute treatment and long waiting lists.

These are currently international phenomena. However, I have learned that no matter where you are, if there is an acute health crisis, a matter of life and death, then participants in all health systems respond with amazing rapidity, expertise, and world class treatment.

This I have witnessed first-hand, as well as being told just that by friends and family, especially here in New Zealand, Australia, and the UK. So, what can we do locally to attract and retain happy health professionals? We need them and there is never enough funding.

Creating Ōtautahi as a “city of choice” where people make a conscious decision to stay, or come to live here because of what we have on o er for them and their whānau is critical.

As a city we are heading in that direction but there is more to be done.

That is our challenge with a big prize if we succeed.

The Antarctic season

Next month, The Antarctic season opens with the Days of Ice celebration.

The events surrounding this remind us of the profound significance of Antarctic science and the pivotal role that Christchurch plays as a gateway city.

Ōtautahi proudly holds the distinction of being one of the world’s five Antarctic Gateways. Our strategic proximity to the Ross Sea area positions us as a bustling epicentre for Antarctic research and activities. Recent Science conferences hit home the impact we are having on this fragile environment, with a substantial reduction in sea ice levels not witnessed in the past four decades and temperatures soaring 35-40°C above averages.

The recent SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) Symposium held in Christchurch united scientists who urged nations to surpass greenhouse gas emissions reduction commitments.

The experts assert that confronting this crisis remains feasible, but the dwindling sea ice is a reminder of the crucial need to combat climate change. The importance of retaining hope cannot be underestimated. While the call for urgent action remains pressing, hope persists. Within our city, a host of remarkable businesses and organisations quietly pursue extraordinary endeavours.

The Airport is leading the decarbonisation of the aviation sector in partnership with the hydrogen consortium, and our Christchurch Antarctic O ce connects the research and business communities, focusing their e orts on innovative approaches to mitigate the environmental consequences of conducting research on this vulnerable continent.

Give this spring

Spring is in the air as we look forward to some warmer weather and set our sights on the time of year where Christchurch really does shine.

Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre remains extremely busy, with around 80 events through until Christmas and our focus firmly on ensuring our clients and their guests have the best experience of our region.

However, it is important we start to reflect on those that are not as fortunate, particularly as we head towards Christmas. At Te Pae Christchurch we have a dedicated group of team members who lead our Corporate Social Responsibility programmes, which include both sustainability and community engagement projects.

This team selects an annual charity partner and this year we are supporting Cholmondeley House, which o ers short term respite care for whanau with children aged 5-12.

Since opening for business in May last year, events that Te Pae has supported have raised over $750,000 for local organisations doing special things for our communities.

It is one of the most fulfilling parts of our role as the city’s convention centre and one of the most gratifying reasons for working with such a dedicated team who really do want to make a di erence to Ōtautahi.

So, as we get ready to enjoy the warmth of Spring on our backs, I urge those that are able, to spend some time looking for ways to contribute to those organisations that are giving so much to make our region a better place.

New art for Rolleston

Arts laureate Dr Areta Wilkinson (Ngāi Tahu) was selected to create the new artwork, to be located in Rolleston Town Centre’s newly developed reserve, surrounded by a sensory garden, youth recreation space, and the community enrichment of Te Ara Ātea.

The artwork, Toro Atua, takes inspiration from ancestral rock art of Te Waipounamu, in the form of 20 light-reflecting stainless-steel figures, mounted on tall, slender poles to vibrate with life, shimmering slightly in the air far above head height.

The figures will be arranged in groups throughout the reserve, leading people through the landscape and indicating areas of importance.

Dr Wilkinson conceived the artwork as imagined guardians; timeless swimming, standing or flying creatures. Her vision is for a recognisable herald of the Rolleston community hub that also sits in harmony with its landscape, delighting and intriguing residents and passersby.

“The opportunity of creating a taonga work for this community is immensely fulfilling and a true highlight,” Dr Wilkinson said. “The process to date has been very thoughtful and the new objects will land in a beautiful environment warmed by people.”

The work, with a budget of $440,000, is due for completion date in April 2024.

Making dreams come true

A dream renovation includes the process as well as the outcome.

After hunkering down and concentrating on the cosy, the expanding light and warmth of spring turns our thoughts to home improvement. It would be nice if renovations proceeded as organically as the change of seasons. If you choose the right contractor, they will.

Continuity of service for over 65 years and an expanding range of trades in-house mean you can’t go past Clyne and Bennie for all bathroom, kitchen, and laundry renovations or new builds. Their website shows the sheer variety of bathroom fittings and tapware, with pricing.

“We have a consultation meeting with customers and discuss budget and the style of bathroom they like,” says Director

Call in the experts

Martin De Gouw. “It can be as simple as replacing fixings, to reconfiguring, tiling floors and tiling showers, all assisted with upfront.”

As well as their original plumbing and drainlaying services, the team have added gasfitting, electrical, and heating services and supply. Changing over to continuous flow hot water or mains pressure heat pumps is a team specialty. When it comes to new kitchens, often your joiner doesn’t provide the subcontractors. At Clyne and Bennie “One call does it all,” says Martin, “we connect to a team of experts across sectors in the building trade, we have the relationships to bring in others to take the hassle completely out of your renovation.”

When you choose Clyne and Bennie, you are not just working with a great team in the moment, you also get benefits that only years of experience can o er. They bring a depth of knowledge about products and installation that you will struggle to find elsewhere. For example, Martin o ers this advice about tap ware choice. “There is now a huge range of coloured metal finishes available in tapware, and the fashion is for black and dark coloured taps. Our experience has shown that here in Canterbury we have really hard water, and customers are ending up with staining on their beautiful

new taps. They are lovely to look at and work really well in softer water.

“If your heart is set on darker tapware, we can fit filtration and treatment options that will save your asset. Plus for health reasons, if you are on a rural water supply the filtration and treatment should be at the front of mind.”

Clyne and Bennie is totally dedicated to customer satisfaction with the renovation journey as well as the outcome. See the website for comments from very happy clients.

Brothers open new home franchise

Combining their sales and building expertise, the brothers are also working on house and land packages throughout Christchurch and North Canterbury, including some 10 acre blocks. These will be on the market shortly.

Aaron lives in Rangiora and began his career in the building industry at Carters, starting as the boy in the yard who worked his way up to a trade sales rep then on to a manager’s role.

A seven-year stint selling houses and sheds added to his experience.

Lewis’ career also started in the industry with a building apprenticeship, before he developed

his own building company, Hi-Spec Homes.

Aaron says he always wanted to work for himself, so when he started looking for opportunities earlier this year, Lewis was there to join him.

“Our partnership works well. I have the expertise in sales, and manage the day-to-day running of the business, while Lewis takes on the role of project manager with his building background.”

Stonewood Homes General Manager Gregg Somerville says it is an ideal time to be starting a new business as you get a ‘‘chance to get established to be ready to grow when the market rebounds’’.

Av River corridor all ours now

Mayor Phil Mauger says the council having full ownership of the zones is a significant milestone.

“The ownership of the Brooklands, Southshore, South New Brighton and Port Hills regeneration areas transferred to the council from 2020. However, the sheer size and complexities of the 5500 property titles in the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor meant that Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand had to reconfigure the land in tranches that it progressively handed across to us,” says Mayor Mauger.

“It’s an exciting day for Christchurch to have complete ownership of the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor. We took over the management of this 602-hectare open space in 2020, and since then, and in collaboration with the communities and stakeholders, we’ve started to bring the vision and objectives of the Regeneration Plan to life.”

A swathe of planting days over the past two seasons

have seen council rangers, community groups and volunteers plant tens of thousands of natives across the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor (OARC).

Grants from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeals Trust have also seen the Dallington Landing and three pedestrian bridges completed.

“The bridges at Medway Street, Snell Place and Avondale enhance community connections across the river and put in place the infrastructure for the City to Sea Pathway,” says Mayor Mauger.

Work on the 11km City to Sea Pathway from Barbadoes St to New Brighton will begin this summer.

The upper and lower terraces of Avon Park will also begin a significant transformation in the coming months, and Council sta continue to progress plans for a new flatwater sports hub and riverside landing at Kerrs Reach.

Celebrating 50 years

The day was an absolute burst of fun, nostalgia, and veneration for the sta , customers, suppliers, family and friends, and owner for the last 40 years, Geo Ball. These Christchurch based companies, which have touched so many, continues to thrive. The day began with a gala breakfast for the team of 240 sta . “We particularly celebrated our 24 team members who have been with us for 20 to 44 years. That’s an incredible 10% of our sta ,” says Geo , “Mata Nuu started 40 years ago in aluminium and Tony Williams started 44 years ago in Hagley Kitchens, 4 years before I did.”

A riotous evening saw customers, suppliers, friends, and family party with Master of Ceremonies Jacqui Clark. “Our business is built on long-term relationships with people,” says Geo , “we have had suppliers and customers for 40 years”. Likewise, there is a tradition of celebrating with D&D, the live band of the evening, first performed at a Hagley function some 25 years ago.

Always entrepreneurial, at school, Geo worked as a milk boy, brickie labourer, and

part-time tomato grower. At 16 he started his first manufacturing business. A building apprenticeship followed, and at 22 Geo bedded in the very roots of the Hagley group. In 1991 Geo knew that the future of windows was double glazing, and so he helped to start Thermaseal Double Glazing. By 2006 the sta numbered 130, but the GFC struck followed by the earthquakes. Geo and wife Julie made di cult personal decisions which enabled them to retain as many sta as possible.

The rebuild saw Geo buy all of Thermaseal and integrate the double glazing and aluminium operation in Waterloo Business Park. By 2022 the sta had reached the current count. In his spare time, Geo builds commercial buildings and residential homes as well as creating subdivisions on the West Coast. Hagley Windows & Doors now o ers new joinery, replacement joinery, commercial facades and curtain walls, glass manufacturing for residential and commercial buildings, alongside monolithic glass manufacturing and ceramic digital printing of glass to various projects across the South Island.

They have received Supreme, National Awards winners for the Ebb Hotel in Dunedin and the digitally printed façade for the Scion Building in Rotorua. Hagley Kitchens is an multi award winning kitchen design and manufacturing operation which operates from both Christchurch and Rangiora. Alongside kitchens, they also design and manufacture laundries, wardrobes, home o ce / studies and stairs using state of the art equipment. From humble beginnings to national recognition, it has been 50 fabulous years of Hagley for everyone on this journey and the team are looking forward to the next 50 years!
