Happy New Year. Most people are back at work now, and probably already thinking ahead to their next holiday. I arrived back in Christchurch after three weeks away to find many bemoaning the lack of hot summer days, and lots of them wondering if we are going to have a more temperate season.

On the other side of the coin are those condemning the fire ban, cursing the regular downpours, and the weather in general. They’re impatiently waiting to fire up the barbecue or hibachi, head to the beach while it is still summer, and to socialise in Canterbury’s great outdoors.

Of course, I’m keen to wander down that path too, so I’m exploring indoor and outdoor options of which Christchurch has

plenty. We need the rain to combat the fire ban, and a few drizzly days shouldn’t stop us getting on and enjoying life. Historically February, March, and April are some of our hottest days so there is still loads of time to enjoy balmy days and nights.

In the meantime, check out some of what the central city has to offer. Wander the art galleries, tune in to live music at various venues, and indulge your tastebuds at a few of our amazing eateries. We’re into a new year now so it is an ideal time to break the mould, ease out of your comfort zone, and add a few fresh experiences to your repertoire.

Leadership with purpose

Christchurch Bead & Proceed founder Bridget Williams explains to Metropol writer Hannah Brown how a moment of frustration sparked a creative global movement in sustainability and leadership.

From courtrooms to creativity workshops, lawyer turned social enterprise founder Bridget has redefined what it means to lead with purpose. “It started with a bad day in court,” she explains, recalling the defining moment that led her to embrace her creative side. Despite being a naturally artistic person, Bridget admits that growing up, “being called creative often felt like a backhanded compliment”. She opted for a legal career, determined to prove herself in a challenging field.

“Law was something I pursued from a place of ego,” she explains. “I wanted to prove I could do something hard. After years of working at a great firm, I realised I wasn’t playing to my strengths. I didn’t feel like I was adding value to my clients, my profession, or even myself.”

One evening after court, everything changed. “I came home, picked up some beads, and made a necklace. It was such a simple

act, yet it unlocked something inside me, this creative spirit I had been suppressing for so long.”

That simple moment of reconnection soon sparked a bigger idea. Bridget came across an article about the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the concept resonated deeply. “I thought, what if we could use creativity as a tool to connect people with these goals? What if something as simple as painting beads could become a framework for making a sustainable impact?”

And so Bead & Proceed was born. It’s a formula that has gained traction. “A lot of businesses start with the beads and then move on to the ‘proceeding’ part, where we help them align their goals with sustainable targets,” Bridget explains.

Bridget’s youth undoubtedly shaped her passions for creativity, sustainability, and leadership. “Growing up, my whānau, especially my mum, celebrated creativity as a strength.

“My parents are nature lovers, and my granddad was an incredible environmentalist, so that love for nature and creative innovation has definitely flowed on.”

Time spent in Canterbury University’s Student Volunteer Army proved another crucial time. “Being involved in the clean-up after the February earthquake, and later serving as president [of the club] was pivotal for me.

“It showed me the importance of being an active citizen and being part of something bigger than you but better because of you,” she says, quoting her mentor, Dr Lane Perry.

Bridget credits her role as chair of the Waimāero FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board with shaping her leadership style. “It helped me understand what kind of leader I want to be,” she says.

“Taking the plunge to commit to something I’m passionate about full-time taught me to own my creativity as a strength.”

“It’s more important than ever to actively incorporate creativity into our lives, especially in the workplace. I see creativity as the engine that drives leadership and sustainability.

“It’s about understanding who you are, what your values are, and operating with healthy optimism to make an impact.”

Bridget believes that leadership starts with self-awareness. “If we are going to care about people and the planet, we have to recognise that we’re part of the ecosystem too.

“Sometimes, external change starts with an internal shift. That is where creativity, leadership, and sustainability intersect.”

As for the next generation entering the workforce, she is optimistic. “Accountability stands out as a key value they bring. This generation is demanding workplaces that prioritise values and impact.”

In an ordinary week, Bridget wears many hats—creative leader, entrepreneur, aerobics instructor, and community board member—yet she brings the same energy and passion to each role. “It’s about a sense of wellbeing,” she explains.

“Especially the younger generation—they’re so clear about their boundaries and honouring them, which I think is incredible.”

When asked what advice she would give to aspiring leaders, Bridget pauses to respond with her signature thoughtfulness. “Get clear on your direction—where do you want to make an impact? Know your motive—what makes you tick creatively—and don’t forget to service that engine. Look after yourself because it’s a journey, and perfection isn’t the goal.”

“Leadership, creativity, and sustainability are iterative processes. When you plateau, rather than seeing it as stagnation, treat it as an opportunity—a moment to reflect, share knowledge, and gather momentum for the next step forward.”

Bridget candidly shares the challenges she’s faced as an entrepreneur. “Initially, some people dismissed it as child’s play. That’s precisely the point—we need to operate differently. This work intentionally puts people in a creative environment to think differently and spark innovative solutions.”

Despite these hurdles, she has noticed a shift. “At the start, criticism and challenges were common because it was new and different. Now, people see its potential, which is a valuable lesson for anyone on an entrepreneurial journey. You will face doubt initially, but persistence pays off.”

Having recently returned from New York City, where she visited the United Nations Headquarters, Bridget is focused on bringing Bead & Proceed to schools across New Zealand. As it grows, Bridget remains committed to empowering others to use their creativity as a force for good—one bead at a time.

“We need to make creativity the norm, not the exception. It is how we spark change and create a sense of belonging.

“Creativity helps us see the world differently, and that’s where solutions start,” she says.

Bridget’s sustainability tips

1. Shop consciously: “Whether it’s secondhand clothes, a clothes swap with friends, or choosing ethical brands, being mindful of your purchases makes a difference.”

2. Connect with nature: “Plant a veggie garden or native trees—bring birdlife back and get your hands in the soil.”

3. Support local organisations: “There are incredible initiatives like the Christchurch City Mission. See where they need help. It’s a meaningful way to give back.”

4. Small habits, big impact: “Bring reusable bags to the supermarket, use public transport, and celebrate small actions—they add up.”

Guest list On the

Steve Guest has an impressive career as an international music publicist and consultant, which is why his daughter Gracie calls Dolly Parton ‘Aunty Dolly’. It begs the question: is he the coolest father ever? Metropol Deputy Editor Nina Tucker finds out.

He laughs, sharing more stories of how his work means Gracie has a signed poster from Taylor Swift in her room. What Steve is doing for Christchurch’s music scene is even cooler. In partnership with leading local arts establishment, the Isaac Theatre Royal, and in conversation with professionals from the industry nationwide, Steve is committed to nurturing the talent hidden within the community.

His clientele over the years span greats including The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, Neil Diamond, and Dolly, and he’s since moved from London to Canterbury to

help grow New Zealand’s musical roots.

In the beginning, “I was a normal kid from a normal area in Southeast London,” he says. Steve knew music from television, and he admits he would sit by the radio with his cassette player to record the top 40 songs each Sunday, yet his brother Martin is who he truly credits for introducing him to the beauty of live music. Steve’s mother was a huge Beatles fan, his dad loved Elvis Presley. If it was played live, Steve loved it all.

Everything came to a head when, aged 16, Steve had to decide between two world tours: Madonna’s Who’s That Girl and U2’s Joshua Tree. Working just a few hours on the weekends with his father, he could only afford to see one of the Wembley Stadium shows. “Anyway, I chose to see Madonna, and it’s now like my Gracie seeing Taylor Swift.” Steve didn’t miss out, though, because fast-forward 30 years later he saw U2 perform Joshua Tree, “and then I ended up working on a U2 tour in Australia when I was working with Jay-Z.”

That’s not something you might expect from a man who currently resides in the humble, rural town of Darfield. It might be attributed to the lessons learned from Dolly Parton in 22 years as her PR agent, alongside her manager Danny Nozell. “Dolly always says, ‘Why is somebody else’s time more important than mine,’ and I live by that,” Steve muses. Down to earth and incredibly humble, it shaped how Steve works with high-profile people. “I always treat everybody the same, no matter at what stage of their careers they are.”

Back at the University of Sheffield Hallam, Steve found himself within a hub of bands climbing the ranks around Manchester and Leeds. He joined the Entertainment Committee, an extracurricular to his History of Art, Design, and Film degree, to inch closer to it all. “You would get into the gigs for free, the discos for free. All you had to do was help out with some publicity marketing.” An unbeatable experience, through Steve and the committee’s work, the Student Union saw bands like Oasis play, “but no one knew who these artists were,” at the time.

Clear Channel). It quickly gained momentum, as the agents of David Bowie and The Rolling Stones jumped ship. “All of these iconic older guys who had been around forever, and I’m working with them,” Steve laughs. He spent 10 years as Live Nation’s Head of Publicity, adopting an engaging approach to promoting through meet and greets, ticket competitions, and opportunities with key industry personnel and journalists to propel chatter. “I formed the first in-house PR department within a live music promoter,” Steve reflects, and soon enough, artists realised the power and profit in playing shows and tours versus putting out albums.

Now a master of the trade, Steve went out on his own doing a mixture of freelance for promoting companies and his own clients. It was an all-consuming job, flying between the United Kingdom and the United States every few weeks and there were many special family moments he missed out on. “I wish I had been around more, if I’m honest,” he admits. New Zealand’s way of life has made up for lost time though, giving him quiet, quality time with Gracie and Kiwi wife Anna. The father-daughter duo now share a love for music, Gracie greatly appreciating her father’s passion and, of course, backstage benefits. Full circle, Steve taught Gracie to put the needle on her first record player, and Gracie opened Steve’s ears to artists like Billie Eilish. “It’s great,” he smiles.

Steve is instilling that passion locally now, putting his years of hard work and sacrifice to good use. “Ultimately, I want to use my experience and knowledge to help Christchurch artists, to give them some guidance. Not to judge.”

Live & Local, the initiative he’s heading with Bianca Lindstrom, marketing and development manager at the Isaac Theatre Royal, is gaining momentum, giving emerging artists a platform to succeed.

“I think there’s some amazing talent in this country. Some of them haven’t had the right guidance in how to break out of New Zealand.” From encouraging artists to dream to finding the funding to support them, Steve’s effort is enormous. “This country has welcomed me with open arms. I want to give something back.”

It was the door to the life he lives now, and the connections and achievements made. “I became quite friendly with a lot of the companies and promoters in London and Manchester.” His name transpired. Steve took a job in London, continuing to revolutionise music promotion. “We would beg people to come see [bands] in little pubs in Camden,” Steve reminisces. “We’ll take you out, we’ll pay for your beer and take you to dinner,” Steve and his team would urge them. “Look at Muse and Fatboy Slim now, playing stadiums,” he remarks.

Soon, he had experience under his belt including working for longtime friend Steve Homer, now CEO of AEG UK, the company that promotes shows like Coachella, and a lengthy stint at multinational entertainment company Live Nation (originally

He’s embracing the Kiwi lifestyle while juggling calls and clients, listening to song samples from Live & Local, and “catching the end” of the British and American working days. However, he laughs, “nine times out of 10 I’m doing the school run.”

As our conversation came to a close, I posed one last question: What’s he most proud of? True to Steve’s wholesome nature, he didn’t hesitate - “I’m proud of Gracie.” Career-wise, it was a shared moment at Dolly’s Blue Smoke World Tour in Glastonbury, 2014. From the side of the stage as Dolly played to her largest crowd, Steve looked up and saw Gracie and Anna up on a balcony smiling away. What followed was a press frenzy honouring a performance

Gateway to learning

The “back to school” checklist covers many areas of your child’s requirements to be first-day-ready.

In the flurry of new drink bottles, lunch boxes, shoes and uniform, one main contender in the upcoming learning environment is often overlooked. Eyes are not only the window to the soul, they are also 80% of the gateway to learning and development, says Anstice Optometrists.

Placing an annual eye exam at the top of the priority list goes a long way to putting your child’s vision and learning in the best position for a successful and positive school year. “Equipping a child with their most suitable visual aid does wonders for their ability to be receptive to learning and confident in the classroom,” says Jeremy Fox of Anstice Optometrists.

“We live in a world of digital devices of all sizes, which continuously takes its toll on our most precious asset, making it essential to keep up to date with annual eye health checks.”

Where Art and Canterbury Meet

ARTSCENE Glass ma erpiece

Since late la year, Cardrona Di illery has been home to a chandelier of over 1000 handcra ed glass feathers.

The award-winning Crystal Chain Gang, Martinborough glass artists Jim Dennison and Leanne Williams, installed their largest-ever piece in terms of the number of feathers and width of the creation, in Cardrona Distillery’s restaurant in December. At 200 kilograms, these feathers certainly don’t take on their usual ‘light-as-air’ form.

“What sets this particular project apart is the size and intricacy involved,” Leanne explains. She says that it speaks to the beauty of the Cardrona Valley and the history of the distillery. “The frame itself is also incredibly detailed, both for strength and aesthetics.”

The spectacular work of art marks the first stage of a large expansion project of the distillery’s facilities, led by award-winning architects Sarah Scott and the Condon Scott Architects team. Sarah shares that the bespoke statement piece “embodies the exceptional level of finish we envision for the entire build.” The collaboration, with Cardrona Distillery and its managing director Desiree Reid, signifies a commitment to exceptional craftsmanship, local heritage, and quality. “Every detail [of the build] speaks to the natural beauty and authenticity of Wānaka,” Sarah adds.

Desiree, delighted to showcase a Crystal Chain Gang piece, says it deeply reflects their history and values. “This beautiful piece symbolises our connection to the kārearea, our handcrafted process and our unique climate here in the Cardrona Valley, with our cold and snowy winters.”

New Year, NEW HOME

“If this was my property, would I be happy?” is a question Shona Saunders often asks herself, when considering rental properties for other people.

Property and people are two of REINZ accredited Shona’s passions. Combining them, she works with rental property owners and tenants to find an ideal solution for both. Working in the rental field for more than a decade, her Rent Wise Property Management company has a history of repeat clients. Shona, husband Michael Brookland, and dedicated, long-serving staff set a high standard to achieve the best result in each situation, “We are here for the owners of properties, we’re also here for the tenants. Everyone involved plays an important role in successful rental properties,” Shona explains.

“We have many clients who come back again and again, for us to rent out their properties, and to find somewhere to rent,” she adds.

Key to her success are staff, and professional support contractors, providing service 24/7. “We have four loyal staff, who are respectful, caring, and a credit to us,” she adds.

Having experienced the Christchurch earthquakes first hand, Shona has also dealt with the Natural Hazards Commission personally, and project managed repairs and contractors for clients, while supporting tenants.

“Members of my family own rental properties, and I also have family members who are tenants so I can see both sides. My aim is to always ensure both parties are treated fairly, and we achieve the best possible outcome. I value my work and treat each property as if it was my own.”

fashion & beauty year snake of the The

Following the 2024 Year of the Dragon, on 29 January, the Chinese Horoscope Year of the Snake comes into being. Already, fashion houses and other industries are incorporating serpents of all shapes and forms into jewellery, emblems on clothing, textiles, and even enamel souvenir badges. Snakeskin boots, belts, and bags have been around for some years, although they’ll be bigger than ever this year, judging by international fashion trends.

Though some organisations and brands have banned snakeskin, it is often found in fashion accessories including handbags and wallets, with the likes of Gucci, Coach and Hermès offering products made with reptile scales.

Surprisingly neutral, snakeskin patterns dominated autumn/winter collections in 2024, through jeans, jackets and coats, along with shoes, bags, and belts.

A versatile textural pattern, snakeskin (real or faux) pairs well with black, white, cream and browns, and looks amazing with metallics. Check out these suggestions.

BROWN on the board

Striking and subtle brown hues were popular before the Pantone Colour Institute declared so, with Mocha Mousse becoming its 2025 colour of the year.

Collections from it-brands including Bottega Veneta and Miu Miu showcased rich, silky, versatile brown iterations throughout 2024, their nurturing, nature-like qualities reflecting the need for global comfort.

e beauty behind the bargain

If you have seen Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci, you will know of the battles that can ensue over counterfeit products. Now on the agenda, is a dupe – a duplicate of a popular product, yet not a direct copy.

These products mimic cult beauty formulas, such as a Dior lip oil or a Nars blush. Cost-effective and widely accessible, it’s no wonder that in a cost-of-living crisis, consumers would search for such an alternative. Ironically, dupe – not as a shortened form of duplicate –means to trick or deceive, so where do dupes stand in the beauty industry?

safe, effective, and a reasonable match for the original product,”

Rohan Widdison, CEO of Australia’s New Laboratories, argues, “Dupes will always have a place in the market because fundamentally consumers love the idea of getting a luxury experience without the big price tag.” When it comes to experimentation in an industry where trends are ever-evolving, dupes offer the opportunities to explore new styles without spending hundreds each time. “If consumers find the product doesn’t suit them, they won’t be out of pocket compared to forking out a small fortune for the popular luxury products,” Rohan says.

Despite the contrast in affordability, dupes, for the most part, are held to standards almost as high as the real thing. “There’s more leeway for dupes to not be quite as good as the original, yet minimum standards exist for product formulations that are

Sometimes, dupes do more harm to your skin than good for your wallet. Rohan lists poor packaging, bad smells, negative reviews, and disinclusion of important information such as usage instructions as signs of inferior product quality. Staying power, pigmentation, and application ease can be telltale too. Comparing the ingredient list between the dupe and authentic product is one way to avoid being ‘duped’.

“Lower pricing could sometimes translate to ingredients which irritate the skin or are unflattering when worn. Try to get some samples and test them first to see how your skin responds. Avoid buying on impulse and don’t compromise on quality for the sake of saving money,” Rohan encourages.

Finding products with the same active ingredients while mimicking the expensive, luxurious feel of a high-end product can be likened to hitting the jackpot. Yet the ethical argument continues: do dupes cheapen and exploit original ideas, creations, and designs, with potential environmental and over-consumption concerns? Evidence shows dupes increase brand awareness and sales for the original, and Coco Chanel believed “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” yet personal preference remains.

A new vision experience

In the summer sun, polarised lenses to combat intense light and glare are essential, yet often not considered until it is too late.

As technology advances, photochromic lenses become the benchmark. When UV hits, these lenses react: in sunlight, they darken, and become polarised outdoors, and in softer light, lighten.

The Transitions XTRActive Polarised lenses at Christchurch’s Independent Lens Specialists (ILS) offer this protection for highglare situations. Designed with the wearer in mind, these lenses are clear and slightly tinted indoors, and outside achieve a polarisation efficiency of up to 90%, putting them in the same standards as polarised sunglasses. If you are light-sensitive, or frequently exposed to intense light and reflective glare, a consultation with your optometrist should be at the top of your 2025 to-do list.

You will find them available from ILS and made in a high-tech laboratory right here in Christchurch, delivered to you within a

week. “The unique polarisation technology reduces glare outdoors, providing a better vision experience with sharpness, a larger field of view and bright, vivid colours,” co-founder Glenn Bolton explains.

Secure peace of mind in your vision this year with Transitions XTRActive Polarised lenses.

Putting the lens

on UV rays

Slip, slop, slap, and wrap. We all know what to do to protect our body from ultraviolet (UV) rays, but what about our eyes?

The sun’s harsh rays can cause damage to eyes and the sensitive skin around them, and Statistics New Zealand reports the country’s UV levels are high enough to wear daytime protection almost year-round.

Exposure to harsh UV, even briefly, can cause mild irritation, photoconjunctivitis, inflammation of the conjunctiva, and photokeratitis, or snow blindness, which is similar to sunburn of the eye. You might notice these straight away, or hours later. Long-term and sometimes permanent effects range from increased risk of cataracts, to ptyergium (white, fleshy growth on the eye), basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer) on the eyesurrounding skin, and cancer of the cornea or conjunctiva. Wrinkles around the eye can develop too, from squinting and elasticity loss. Long story short, eye safety in the sun deserves as much attention as our skin.

Be aware of the common misconceptions in sun safety: darker sunglass lenses do not necessarily offer more protection, and an Ultraviolet Index of 3 or above can cause damage, even on a cloudy day. Statistics New Zealand reports that UV radiation also reflects off many surfaces; snow between 50 and 88%; sea surf and water 25 to 30%; sand 15%.

1. Always protect your eyes when outside with sunglasses, a hat, or both.

2. Wear a wide-brim hat (7cm or more) to reduce the radiation reaching your eyes. Aim for it to shade your scalp, face, neck, shoulders, and upper back. If you can, find a hat made with a UV protection factor of 50+.

3. Wear close-fitting sunglasses that meet New Zealand’s UV radiation protection standards.

4. Seek an eye check-up regularly.

Suntsafer

It’s a gorgeously warm day, and you’re looking forward to basking in the sun. You might follow that with a game of backyard cricket or beach volleyball, or chores outside.

Sounds like a dream, except the reality is that much time under the sun puts you at risk of overexposure. Mindfulness of how long we spend in the sun – and reducing the risk of melanoma – is a hot topic. It’s a question thousands of Kiwis toss-up over summer, deliberating what they desire more: a deep, bronzed glow, or to be sun-safe.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand, and according to Worldwide Cancer Research, more than 80% of skin cancers derive from overexposure to ultraviolet rays.

Yearly, the Cancer Society of New Zealand reports an estimated 90,000 non-melanoma skin cancers and 2800 invasive melanomas diagnosed. It costs the healthcare system millions – the total cost of skin cancer treatment is expected to hit $295 million this year – but losing loved ones costs us more.

Thousands are taking a new approach - a sun-free, self-applied tan. This includes Christchurch’s own Mary Outram, who released BONNIE in late 2024, a ‘bake-free’ range of dermatologist-tested and New Zealand-made tanning products for a natural-looking glow.

What’s not to love? Self-tanning formulas, provided you use a safe formula, give all that golden shine with zero risk of skin cancer. Plus, the sun isn’t there to click fast-forward on the ageing process.

When outside, lather up in sunscreen and let your self-tan work its illusionary magic. Always have sun protection with you, including sunglasses, hats, and cover-up clothing.

From fractured to functional, fast

Prompt patient treatment with optimal recovery is a key part of the service model at a leading Christchurch specialist treatment centre. Treating semi-acute fractures in collaboration with other medical specialists is all part of the service.

Specialising in adult hand, wrist, and elbow injuries, the team at Dudley Creek Health (DCH) includes a hand therapist, surgeon, doctor, nurse, and medical imaging provider. The end result is high patient satisfaction and optimal recovery.

Clinicians at DCH say it is imperative that new injuries are presented early to a patient’s own healthcare provider for initial assessment and treatment.

This may include pain medication, cast or splint application and medical imaging (X-ray, ultrasound scan). The initial healthcare provider may then consider onward referral to the DCH semi-acute fracture clinic where appropriate.

“Our first step is a thorough assessment. Triage team members assess the injury to determine its nature and severity. This typically includes reviewing correspondence from the referring clinician, review of medical imaging and treatments, and arranging new imaging. The goal is to fully understand the injury, and current state of progress.

“With this information, we design a personalised treatment plan,” they add.

The hand therapist plays a crucial role, as they focus on restoring mobility, strength, and function.

Initially, the therapist might recommend

custom splints or braces to ensure adequate support while preventing unwanted movement that could hinder healing.

As the patient progresses, the hand therapist introduces tailored exercises to improve range of motion. Gentle movements are encouraged with a gradual shift in emphasis to strengthening exercises.

The therapist closely reviews progress to adjust exercises, to ensure the patient is neither overexerted nor under-challenged.

The clinicians provide periodic evaluations to monitor recovery and decide if surgery is necessary. Surgery may be needed if a patient doesn’t progress as expected, or for complications such as joint instability or malalignment of a fracture.

“Patient education is a vital element in our clinic ethos,” they explain. “Education of patients about their injury, recovery expectations, and their engagement in empowered proactive rehabilitation further promotes patient well-being and return to work and life activities.”

Through collaborative efforts, the care team aims to maximise successful outcomes, ensuring each patient receives comprehensive tailored care for their injury and lifestyle needs. “At Dudley Creek Health we aim to provide you just this, to enable your speedy return to your best life.”

heart Keeping ahead of

disease

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is New Zealand’s number one killer, with one Kiwi dying every 90 minutes.

In recent years, the number of people affected by cardiovascular disease has been on the rise globally. Early detection plays a critical role in preventing serious outcomes, and Pacific Radiology in Christchurch offers a valuable tool for this purpose – the CT Calcium Score Test. Pacific Radiology’s Dr Ross Keenan, highly experienced in neuro and cardiac radiology and leading imaging researcher, could not be more enthusiastic about this testing: “It’s a brilliant test because it shows what nothing else can. A totally healthy-seeming person on all the other indicators could have a terrible calcium score.”

SPOT HEART DISEASE EARLY

A CT Calcium Score is a specialised CT scan that uses high-speed, high-resolution imaging to detect calcium build-up in coronary arteries. No intravenous dye or special preparation is required, and the test typically takes less than 15 minutes. The presence of calcium indicates coronary artery disease (CAD), which the test can detect even before symptoms such as heart attacks occur. “The amount of calcium is measured as a score, which helps determine an individual’s risk of CAD. Early detection provides an opportunity to modify risk factors, and the test itself is safe and painless,” explains Dr Keenan.

WHO IS AT RISK?

The increase in heart disease cases is partly due to lifestylerelated factors such as obesity and diabetes. Incredibly, one in 21 New Zealand adults are affected. Risk factors include:

• High total cholesterol or low ‘good’ cholesterol

• High blood pressure

• Smoking

• Diabetes

Certain groups face higher risks, including those with a family history of heart disease, Māori, Pacific, or Indian subcontinent communities, and individuals with conditions mentioned above, and with kidney problems. People with cardiovascular symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath during activity, or palpitations should seek a full cardiology assessment, as these symptoms require more than just a calcium score test.

TAKE CONTROL

“If you fall into any of the risk categories or are concerned about your heart health, talk to your doctor about getting a CT Calcium Score Test,” Dr Keenan suggests. “Early detection can make a significant difference. Taking this step could be the start of a healthier heart and a healthier life.”

Schedule your appointment today to to take control of your heart health.

Embrace alfresco

Summer is the season when alfresco dining comes into its own.

Nice weather and long hot days mean eating outside, usually in a casual setting, is an enjoyable option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The term comes from the Italian phrase al fresco, which means “in the fresh air”, and as a nation Kiwis love to spend time outdoors.

Many homes now boast outdoor kitchens, making it even easier to prep up and dine alfresco, yet a simple wooden picnic table, or a blanket at the beach also qualify as suitable setting.

Christchurch has an extensive number of eateries, many featured on our cuisine section pages, o ering alfresco dining in various settings suitable for romantic tête-à-têtes, friend and family get-togethers, and business/corporate socialising. Here are some recommendations from ChristchurchNZ:

Little High Eatery: a must visit summer destination when in the central city. The huge outdoor courtyard, in Saint Asaph Street, is a vibrant spot for summer dining, with live music, buskers and various entertainment happening at various times.

The Craft Embassy: Situated on Oxford Terrace, an outdoor table on the balcony allows you to people watch with a craft pint while dining. The rotating brew taps ensure regular new pours for beer aficionados.

O.G.B: In Cathedral Square, O.G.B is a beacon of live music, speak-easy style drinks, and high-class service in an oft-forgotten city corner. The large patio is a popular place for those warm summer nights, as are regular live music sessions.

New Regent Street: With its colourful, Spanish Mission style architecture, this street is a Mecca for foodies, with an abundance of unique restaurants, vibrant bars and indulgent dessert spots.

Riverside Market: Made for sunny days and outdoor eating, this iconic market leaves you spoilt for choice with outdoor spaces. Enjoy rooftop views, modern brews and eats, park yourself at the picnic tables for a feast, or find a spot in the brick alleyways along Oxford Terrace.

Seasonal fruit muffins

Liven up your favourite muffin recipe by adding berries, or diced summer fruits such as peaches, nectarines, mangos, and pineapple. For every cup of flour in the recipe, add about half a cup of fruit, whether fresh, or tinned.

INGREDIENTS

2 medium eggs

125ml vegetable oil

250ml milk

250g caster sugar

METHOD

400g self-raising flour

1 Tsp salt

100g fresh fruit, chopped roughly

1. Heat oven to 200°C. Line two muffin trays with paper muffin cases.

2. In a large bowl, beat eggs lightly with a handheld electric mixer for 1 minute.

3. Add oil and beat until just combined then add caster sugar and whisk until you have a smooth batter.

4. Sift in flour and salt, then mix until just smooth. Don’t over-mix the batter as this will make the muffins tough.

5. Gently fold in the fruit.

6. Fill muffin cases two-thirds full and bake for 20-25 minutes, until risen, firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean.

7. Leave the muffins in the tin to cool for a few minutes and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Fine food to feast on

To walk into a café and immediately see a huge cabinet brimming with beautifully displayed and tempting goodies is a feast for the eyes and titillation for the taste buds.

At the heart of every café are the treasures that lie inside its food cabinets.

Treasures are indeed at Elmwood Fine Foods, a little gem of a café on Normans Road. Salivate over sandwiches and quiches, savouries and muffins, custard pies, scones, and cinnamon scrolls. Everything is made fresh on-site, which customers really appreciate.

Dine in with your cup of fresh barista coffee or take a treat away for lunch or a morning or afternoon snack. “Since we took over the café last year, we have kept everything that was good about the way it operated,” says owner Dimong Chhoeng. “It was, after all, a winning formula.”

Part of that formula is the extensive range of pastry pies. There are so many to choose from – mince and cheese, peppered steak, steak and mushroom, steak, cheese and jalapeno, chicken and apricot, chicken and mushroom – the list goes on.

Another popular service the café offers is catering. Specialising in finger-food platters which are ideal for any function, the team will work within your culinary preferences.

The café is now open seven days a week for fine food, excellent coffee, and great customer service.

Delicious daiquiris

Cocktail or mocktail, a daiquiri is an easy anytime pick-me-up, and a great way to indulge in summer fruits and berries.

Considered by many to be one of the six essential cocktails, a classic daiquiri comprises three ingredients only, being rum, fresh lime juice, and sugar.

Adding fresh fruit or berries (or both) to the mix takes it up a notch, and whether stacked, shaken, or frozen, it’s a fabulous and versatile way to enjoy a refreshing drink. To turn yours into a mocktail, simply delete the alcohol content. To amp it up, add fruit and shake or make frozen.

INGREDIENTS

3 jiggers of white rum

1 jigger of lime (or lemon) juice

1 jigger of sugar syrup

2 jiggers fruit liqueur if desired

Soda water

Garnishes such as lime slices, strawberries, watermelon

Stacked: Fill a tall glass with ice cubes, and add remaining ingredients. Top with soda water for a less sweet version. Stir, garnish, and enjoy.

Shaken: Add the ingredients into your cocktail shaker, shake until well-chilled, then pour through a mesh strainer into a chilled coupe. Garnish, and enjoy.

Frozen: Place all ingredients into blender and whizz until a slushy consistency. Serve in a coupe or martini glass, and garnish.

Scallop skewers

Succulent, sweet, and with a hint of ginger zing, these sizzling scallop skewers with a honey ginger glaze can be done on the barbecue, hibachi, or in a frying pan inside.

They are simple to make, using fresh or defrosted scallops, with or without the roe on. Cook on their own, with ham chunks, or quartered orange slices, as in this recipe. Once prepped, they take less than six minutes to cook. Serve with corn on the cob, and tasty seasonal salads.

INGREDIENTS

1 large or 2 small oranges

1 Tbsp honey

1 Tbsp freshly grated ginger

Oil for the grill

12 jumbo scallops

Salt and pepper to taste

Metal or wooden skewers

When grilling scallops, start with a clean, well-oiled surface, and don’t overcook. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes. Using two per kebab will prevent the scallops rotating while being cooked.

METHOD

1. If using oranges, trim the ends off, cut the remainder into 4 half-inch thick slices, and each slice into quarters.

2. Squeeze the juice from the remaining orange (2 tablespoons) into a bowl.

3. Add the honey, and ginger to the juice, and combine to make the glaze.

4. Heat the grill or pan to high.

5. If using oranges, alternate threading orange pieces and scallops on to the skewers, otherwise just thread the scallops on.

6. Season with salt and pepper.

7. Grill about 2 minutes on each side, until the scallops are opaque throughout, then brush and baste with the glaze and cook 30 to 60 seconds more seconds on each side.

glaze phase In a

Barbecues receive a powerful workout over summer, serving up champion cuts of meat and various vegetables – made even tastier with a sweet or savoury glaze.

Aclassic glaze heroes two components – some form of sugar syrup and a punchy, flavour-packing element.

To please

Easy, customisable, and with a classic flavour profile, keep this glaze recipe onhand for a simple summer barbecue menu. Combine 1 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup honey, and a spoon or two of your preferred mustard in a saucepan. Add a dash of fresh orange juice, and any herbs and spices you like, to taste, such as ginger, garlic, pepper, or paprika. Consider the notes of each and how the flavours will balance to please your guests. Simply stir to dissolve, and use with pork, salmon, chicken, and vegetables.

To impress

This marvellous glaze makes a statement and is best with beef skewers, seafood, and chicken.

To a saucepan, add 1/2 cup pineapple juice, 1/4 cup sugar liquid of your choice (honey, maple syrup), 1/4 cup rice vinegar, Dijon mustard to taste, a dash of sesame oil and a few pinches of turmeric. Use chilli flakes if you like a kick. Simmer over medium heat until reduced, before setting aside to cool. Baste meat as usual, reserving some sauce as a condiment for serving.

Bathroom trends

Creative lighting and floating vanities will be key features in 2025 bathroom designs, says the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association of New Zealand (NKBA).

In recent years, the bathroom has become a statement piece of any home. No longer an afterthought, homeowners across New Zealand are utilising interior designers to create functional and brilliantly appointed bathrooms. NKBA designers predict in 2025, the bathroom will embrace earthy and neutral aesthetics, alongside a luxurious and relaxing vibe.

Nicola Manning of NM Design says a bathroom is often an escape from our busy lives.

“A bathroom can be a sanctuary, a space to relax and unwind. It offers a place to get away from it all, to give us time for ourselves in a lovely, relaxing environment. When designing a bathroom, this vibe tends to be the most popular for homeowners and this will continue into 2025.”

In 2025, NKBA designers say that bathrooms will feature creative lighting and floating vanities as the two key elements.

They also predict that porcelain will be the most popular material of choice with 34% of designers utilising it in their bathroom designs.

And the price? In 2024, NKBA designers said bathrooms cost between $20K and $40K.

When it comes to timeframes, 28% of NKBA designers surveyed said a bathroom takes three months on average, from design to install.

Executive Officer of NKBA, Rachael Kwok says that it seems many homeowners are waiting for interest rates to drop before making their next renovation or new build move.

“The current economic climate means many of our designers are finding clients reluctant to push go on their projects, or if they do, there are budget restraints, changes to scope or timings of delivery. This gives some of our members uncertainty on their work pipeline for 2025.”

For 2025, the Pantone Colour Institute has named Mocha Mousse as its Colour of the Year. The colour palette ranges from rich dark browns to creamy hues reminiscent of flat white, latte, and long black coffees, with accents of off-white, vanilla, gold, and black.

STAY SIMPLISTIC

A minimalistic living space is clean, put-together and timeless. With a neutral palette, minimalists value cleanliness and functionality over colour and personality. Stylish storage allows your space to remain neat, utilised in a way that keeps surfaces clear and spaces clutter-free. Calming and with easy maintenance, minimalism in interior design soothes, promoting mental clarity.

BE BOLD

Fill your living space with colours, patterns, and textures. With statement pieces and flamboyant patterns, maximalists believe more is more. Take a coloured couch, think red, green or blue, and compliment it alongside some contrasting cushions - orange or peach. Don’t be afraid to inject references, such as bygones or memories of things you love.

Post-holiday refresh

Our homes and baches deserve some pampering post-holiday season, just as we do.

Tapping into the senses through colour, scent, or memories, is an easy way to refresh and bring a new mood to a space. New Zealanders spend almost 70% of their day inside their homes, and whether at your bach or permanent residence, a post-holiday pick-me-up usually works wonders.

Revive

Through fresh florals or a candle that meets the season’s brief in aesthetics and scent, bringing new smells into your space is revitalising. Add a special touch with picture frames showcasing memories just made, and position your favourite Christmas gifts about the room if appropriate.

Replenish

Fresh linen is always satisfying. Restock with new towels and replace bed sheets, leaving your home or bach fresh and welcoming. Invest in luxury cotton sheets, like percale and sateen for

longer-lasting linen, or change your duvet and pillow covers to suit the season ahead.

Redecorate

Breathe new life into your home with colour and décor. Opt for a theme, such as Valentine’s Day, or change the colour palette with cushions, art, and bedding. Uplift a room’s energy with dynamic new statement pieces.

Remove

Like our homes, baches become storage units for unused items. From aged furniture to untouched holiday gear, removing unnecessary items declutters both the space and your mind. Remove infrequently used furniture and replace empty or old products.

Perfecting your gathering space

At Dream Doors Kitchens, they believe the kitchen is a place to gather, cook,

Youth Hub

While there are many youth hubs popping up, Youth Hub Christchurch stands out for its sheer scale and built-in supported housing facilities.

Afirst of its kind in New Zealand, late last year the $21 million first stage, designed to tackle youth mental health and wellbeing, was officially opened by Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro. Youth health doctor and Chair of the Youth Hub Trust, Dame Sue Bagshaw says the opening of the Hub is a big milestone.

“Ever since the earthquakes we have been seeking to build a place for young people in Christchurch to be themselves and belong,” she says.

Stage One of the Hub includes shared working spaces for a dozen youth providers including anchor tenants Te Tahi Youth, Voyce Whakarongo Mai, Youthline, Rerenga Awa Canterbury Youth Workers Collective and the Christchurch Youth Council, as well as an outdoor activities courtyard.

These opened to the public in December, while the Trust and Christchurch Methodist Mission are gearing up to open a supported housing wing with 22 bedrooms in February. Meanwhile, an Events and Activities Centre will be built in 2025.

“We are halfway to completing the Hub. However, we still need to fundraise to build a second wing of supported housing and communal spaces for education, training, recreation and creativity,” says Sue.

“I am confident we will get there. We are also very fortunate to have a great team – from our architects Field Studio, structural engineer Lewis Bradford & Associates, building team from Naylor Love and suppliers including Quantum, Autex and Hush who have got right in behind what we are trying to achieve for Christchurch’s young people.

“The attention to detail and care taken to construct the Hub

has been truly remarkable and will help the Hub stand the test of time,” Sue adds.

The Hub is expected to deliver more than 8000 connection points with young people aged 10-24 annually.

Further information about the Youth Hub, including ways to donate, are available on its website.

Empowering futures

A widely commented on feature of the Hub’s youth services building is its cork floor.

Wise Cork was selected for many reasons, including its warmth and sound dampening qualities, due to the cellular structure of cork which provides a comfortable cushion underfoot, as well as natural insulation.

It also pairs well with the extensive wood construction and bright colours in the Hub. This helps the space feel calm, welcoming and non-institutional for visiting young people. Not to mention its strong sustainability and durability credentials, with cork being hypoallergic and able to withstand more than 2000 chemicals.

“This project marks an important step forward for acceptance of cork in New Zealand particularly in commercial projects. Youth Hub Christchurch is a remarkable facility for Christchurch’s young people and a very special moment in NZ for cork – a milestone Quantum is very proud of,” Quantum’s Commercial Sales Manager Shaun Foster says.

In areas such as coastal Canterbury, the ocean or a river is never too far away, making watercraft a major source of recreational pleasure for thrill-seekers, avid anglers and seafood lovers, and those who just enjoy a day at sea. If you’re keen to buy a boat, consider the activities you love, the number of passengers you will take out, and your preference of propulsion. You might also want to think about a trailer-sized vessel, or a berth in a marina.

So many options are available, you may find it hard to find the perfect one for your lifestyle, so maybe hitch an exploratory ride on a mate’s boat, and talk to local watercraft enthusiasts.

Here are a few of the more popular options:

1. All-purpose fishing boats: Designed with multi-species anglers in mind, these boats often feature live wells, rod storage, and versatile seating arrangements, making them ideal for both family outings and serious fishing excursions.

2. Aluminium fishing boats: Lightweight, durable, and easy to transport, these are a go-to choice for many anglers targeting freshwater species. Their rugged construction allows them to take on tough conditions, while their shallow draft allows navigation in smaller or more remote waters.

3. Cabin cruisers: These combine performance with the comforts of home, offering sleeping quarters, a galley, and even a bathroom. They’re great for overnight or weekend trips, turning a boating adventure into a mini-holiday.

4. Deck boats: If entertaining is high on your priority list, opt for a deck boat. With a wide beam and expansive seating arrangements, these boats are designed to accommodate

larger groups, making them excellent for family fun, watersports, or simply cruising around with friends.

5. Dinghies: Small, versatile boats often used as tenders to larger vessels, a rigid or inflatable dinghy is practical, easy to transport, and a must-have for many boaters.

6. High-performance boats: Built for speed, these are designed for adrenaline seekers, featuring powerful engines and sleek designs that allow them to reach impressive speeds. Racing or cruising in style, high-performance boats turn heads.

7. Inflatables: From portable tenders to full-size boats, inflatables are versatile, lightweight and easy to store. They are ideal for those who want a boat that can quickly inflate, deflate, and stow away. Many models are also highly durable, making them suitable for both recreational and utility use.

8. Jet boats: With their unique propulsion system eliminating the need for an exposed propeller, jet boats are fast, agile, and designed for shallow water, allowing access to areas other boats can’t. Jet boats are perfect for anyone who enjoys water sports such as wakeboarding or tubing.

9. Motor yachts/power cruisers: Top of the luxury list, these large, spacious vessels offer all the comforts of home, from fully-equipped kitchens to luxurious cabins and entertainment areas. They suit long-distance cruising or weekend getaways, and those who want to experience the finer side of life on the water.

10. Personal watercrafts: Jetskis or PWCs are a load of fun, small, fast, and perfect for those who enjoy zipping across the water solo or riding tandem.

EV SEASONS AN FOR ALL

It’s always a big deal when Toyota launches something totally new, and the arrival of the brand’s first purpose built BEV was certainly their biggest of 2024. Metropol motoring writer Ben Selby spent a week with the bZ4X to see how it lives up to the hype.

Understanding the Toyota bZ4X’s three letters and its lone numeral is simple. The b stands for beyond, Z for zero (as in emissions), 4 for its size and X for its off-road capability, indicating an EV for all seasons and locations, within reason of course.

The family is split into two models, the FWD Pure and AWD Motion, the latter being available with an optional two-tone paint scheme.

Both models have bespoke e-TNGA underpinnings and a 71.4kWh battery pack. The base Pure gets 150kW of silent oomph while my Motion sends 160kW to all four wheels via two 80kW electric motors. Whichever variant you opt for, both are compatible with AC and DC fast charging.

I quite like it when a mainstream production car still looks like it never left the concept stage. The bZ4X’s sharp angles, clean cut lines, along with its tasteful LED daytime running lights and aerodynamic aids, certainly follow this design trend.

In terms of equipment, you have the latest Toyota Safety Sense system with Intersection Collision Avoidance Support, Emergency Steering Assist and an uprated Pre-Collision System along with a host of other standard features. Along with a 12.3” touchscreen infotainment system and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, my AWD Motion had other goodies like Toyota’s teammate advanced parking system, panoramic view camera, panoramic roof, heated synthetic leather seats, 20-inch machined alloys and a heated steering wheel.

The only bugbear I had with the cabin was the raised LCD instrument screen felt slightly obscured by the position of said steering wheel. The rest of the cabin though? On point. It is a lovely place to be with a great use of premium feeling materials and solid switchgear.

Getting underway in the bZ4X Motion AWD, it manages to be both supple and hugely comfortable. It is also immensely easy to drive, never feeling cumbersome, whether in an urban setting or the open road. While I didn’t get a chance to take it rough-roading,

the bZ4X really excels as a jack of all trades BEV which never loses its foot in just about every situation you throw at it. Handling wise, it feels really planted and coaxing it into long sweeping bends or sharp corners is a breeze.

Hands down, this is one of the best BEV all-rounders I have experienced in recent memory and despite some ergonomic oddities; the Toyota bZ4X is a winner.

IHow often do you have your vehicle serviced?

n New Zealand, the Automobile Association (AA) recommends regular servicing for safety, running efficiency, and longevity of your vehicle.

Generally, the association says, vehicles should be serviced every 12 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first. High mileage drivers should aim to have an interim level service every six months or 5000km.

Catching problems early is a major benefit to regular servicing. Often the earlier they are caught, the cheaper they are to fix. Having regular servicing will also give a vehicle a better resale value and longer life.

The AA says the cost of a service (including oil and filter change) can range anywhere from $160 – $300 depending on vehicle/fuel type and how in-depth of a service you require. European vehicles typically cost more to service, and parts are more expensive.

A replacement engine can cost anything from $2500 to $15,000, depending on its quality and availability. Cylinder head gaskets range from $1500 to $5000, radiators are around $500 to fix, and water pumps start at $500, increasing to around $2500 with the cost of an added cambelt and tensioners.
