FROM THE EDITOR LYNDA PAPESCH

The power of positive thinking Optimism is one of my favourite words, and most of the time I’m a glass half full person. Actually I’m probably more of a glass three quarters full person, always looking on the bright side.

NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019

Sometimes it is hard to find a bright side, but recently I read something that helps me, and I hope will help you too. It was along the lines of putting pen to paper each day and writing down three things that you are grateful for. A simple thing to do, but if you stick to it for 21 days in a row, it is supposed to significantly increase your level of optimism. Definitely worth a try, even if it’s only for a week or two. Once you do something seven times in a row it is supposed to have become a habit, so I figure that even a week will be good if it helps

ife - indeed the whole world - is definitely a stage for Jarred Fell. Deemed New Zealand’s best comedy magician for more than a decade, he’s just at home here and abroad, entertaining on stage, busking in the street and wowing audiences on the hit NBC American TV series Bring the Funny. Convention centres, cruise ships, casinos, comedy clubs and cosmopolitan kerbs all offer a backdrop for his unique sense of humour and showmanship. He’s danced across stages, fixed and impromptu, in Christchurch many times and now, home in New Zealand thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, Jarred’s headed this way again. He’s always loved Christchurch as a city. “It truly is beautiful. Ever since the first Buskers Festival, it became one of my favourite festivals to perform at. “Us entertainers LOVE performing gig after gig and I have been so lucky to have amazing audience members and audiences each year! Bloody love it!” he enthuses. Performing magic for 20 years now, he started blending it with comedy thanks to a colleague. “When I was 17, I was introduced to a comedy club by a fellow comedian magician Nick Nicholas in Auckland. He told me to get up on stage and make fun of magic. Once I tried that I never looked back. “I love having that slight element of taking the piss, but still trying to wow the crowd. “Sometimes things just go wrong and it’s funny so win win haha!” For the first 11 years of his career, shows were more about what he thought was funny, but more recently in the last two years – inspiration has also come from what’s been happening in the world. “I have started adding real life topics into my writing to try add emotion and connect more with my audience. So currently my life is my inspiration, ha!” Favourite topics? Well obviously MAGIC and COMEDY! Turning magic and comedy into entertainment doesn’t just happen. About half of Jarred’s shows are written and half improvised. “The audience definitely is a huge part of any show, so no pressure if ya coming along for the ride ha!” And a word of advice for those looking to follow in his footsteps: “Don’t! Get a qualification and stay in school. But, if you really want to get into the arts then join your local theatre company and get as much stage time as possible. “With magic, just pick up a normal deck of cards and start reading those magic books. Or for all you hipsters … watch YouTube.”

Bread & Circus World Buskers Festival Taking place in Christchurch during the Easter school holidays, from 22 April to 1 May. The 2022 event will take place at Victoria Square and The Commons. Free to enter, with My Vaccine Passes required at entry, the Bread & Circus site will comprise two big stages with busking and free entertainment, roving performers, food stalls, bars, and activities for all the whānau. The evenings of both Fridays (22 and 29 April) and Saturdays (23 and 30 April) will offer a late programme, for a more adult audience.

Distinguished weavers exhibition The art of Māori weaving is celebrating its survival in a world first exhibition, Te Puna Waiora: The Distinguished Weavers of Te Kāhui Whiritoi., on now at the Christchurch City Art Gallery.

T

e Puna Waiora lets visitors experience the exquisite details of a range of items – cloaks, tukutuku panels, tāniko, kete, footwear, hats, necklaces and more – all made by master weavers. Two years in the making, the exhibition is a partnership between Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū and Te Roopu Raranga Whatu O Aotearoa, with support from Toi Māori. “The importance of raranga within te ao Māori cannot be overstated,” says Christchurch Art Gallery curator Nathan Pōhio. “It provides ways to understand the world. Without this knowledge and technology, many traditional customs and cultural narratives risk falling away.”

Te Kāhui Whiritoi means the gathering of many hands for the purpose of weaving. The group was formalised in 2006 by Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa and Toi Māori Aotearoa. Te Puna Waiora showcases work by te Kāhui Whiritoi members Cath Brown, Emily Rangitiaria Schuster, Whero o te Rangi Bailey, Te Aue Davis, Matekino Lawless, Eddie Maxwell, Saana Waitai Murray, Riria Smith, Toi Te Rito Maihi, Ranui Ngarimu, Reihana Parata, Connie PewhairangiPotae, Madeleine Sophie Tangohau, Mere Walker, Pareaute Nathan, Sonia Snowden and Christina Hurihia Wirihana. Mountain bike skills and tricks Mountain biking tricks are a terrific way to get the adrenaline pumping.

B

eginners are best starting with an all-purpose mountain bike, such as a full suspension one, which is ideal for all sorts of trails and will help absorb the shock when performing tricks such as a front wheel lift. See guidance from someone in the know if you can. Here are three tricks Metropol thinks you might like to learn.

14 17 February, 2022 Metropol

Front wheel lift The basic front wheel lift is an essential mountain bike skill, and it’s especially useful when riding over trail obstacles such as rocks, roots, and ditches. Start by practising on a flat surface in a neutral position, then build pressure in the bike by lowering your centre of gravity. After that, shift your weight slightly back, explode upward, and lock your arms out to allow the front wheel to come off the ground. Finish off by bringing your weight back to the centre of the bike and bend your arms and legs to absorb the impact of the ground and bring the wheel back down.

Nollie Ready to fly into the air? The nollie technique ensures that you land on your two wheels safely regardless of whether you’re dropping from a sidewalk or into a ditch. Start by gaining sufficient speed and shift your weight onto the fork. Bend your knees and lift the rear wheel followed by the front wheel to hop, and then step safely. This trick is best performed on a dirt jump mountain bike.

Alleyoop For intermediate level riders, the alleyoop is a skill that can be a lead in to many other tricks. The idea is to ride in an arc, jump out and perform a loop in the air. Find someone who knows how to alleyoop and have them guide you through it. Or maybe sign up for an MTB skills package and learn from the experts. Skills courses usually include tutorials and practical sessions.

Break the stillness of Lakes Ōhau, Aviemore, and Benmore by diving in, boating across, and fishing the depths. Or simply spread a picnic lakeside at any one of the campgrounds. The boat ramps are located at Sailors Cutting, Parsons Rock and Loch Laird.

Watch the world’s smallest penguin (kororā) as they clamber ashore after a hard day’s fishing every evening at the Ōamaru Blue Penguin Colony. The colony operates viewings year-round, with peak season (August-February) welcoming over 200 penguins in from the cold.

Visit as many geological wonders as you can. From Elephant Rocks to Shag Point, near Palmerston, you’ll wonder why you never visited before. While in Ōmārama, the striking landforms of the Clay Cliffs beckon and you can’t miss the iconic spherical Moeraki boulders formed over 60 million years ago.

Travel back in time walking the Victorian Precinct in Ōamaru. The limestone buildings that once housed grain and shipping equipment make up New Zealand’s best preserved Victorian streetscape and now showcase artisan goods and fabulous food.

Eat your way through the district, dine on fresh seafood, try award-winning flavours using local produce, and raise a glass of homegrown grapes to celebrate your Waitaki getaway.

A decade of sound advice M

Financial advice is a necessity in today’s world, both for businesses and private individuals.

any people seek financial advice when they are at a crossroads in their life. Planning for the future, buying a house, starting a family or looking at retirement are all times when professional financial advice may be of lasting benefit. Heading successfully into their 10th year of business in Christchurch this month, Alistair Bean & Associates – Financial Advisers are financial experts who can help you identify what’s right for you, advise about the risks of certain investments, and assist in setting you up for the future. In turbulent Covid-19 times, Alistair’s key message is “Don’t fear, we will get there,” especially with a little financial advice where needed. “Britain is living with it [Covid-19], so too are Australia and the United States of America, and New Zealand must too.” For investments, he says the biggest question is always where to put funds. “Interest rates are crazy at present due to inflation, rates will go up, but they may quickly come down which affects investments. It’s a

time when financial advice will be a big help.” One of the biggest problems creating financial uncertainty is the traffic jam in shipping, which is seriously impacting supply and demand, he says. “Demand has not gone down, unemployment is at record low levels, and people have not been travelling internationally, so they likely have the benefit of more disposable income to invest. “Because of the pandemic panic, there are lots of great investments at bargain prices and plenty that are not necessarily good investments. That’s where a financial adviser will help to sort the wheat from the chaff.” Alistair and his team have a combined 42+ years’ experience and believe that regular faceto-face meetings with their clients is the most important service that their firm offers. “It is particularly imperative that this occurs in present Covid-19 times when unforeseen changes have been thrust upon us again. We can help you calm the waters to make the best adjustments to meet your individualised needs or assist you with staying the course if your goals have not changed,” he says.

KiwiSaver a sound investment Over 89 billion dollars is already invested in KiwiSaver and exponentially the fund is going up and up. “Ten year returns for growth have averaged over 11 percent, It is a sound investment,” says Alistair, “as many people aged 45 and over are finding out.” “Initially their funds were only a few thousand dollars, but now many of them have $100,000 and more to their names.” To live your life with financial freedom, call Alistair on 03 288 0404, email Alistair.bean@abafs.co.nz or visit the website.

Wild disorder An ant’s eye, orange peel, a hibiscus flower, rhubarb, bacteria and a space blob are brought together with stunning effect in Alicia Frankovich’s new exhibition Atlas of Anti-Taxonomies.

N

ow on at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, the exhibition features more than 100 images that the New Zealand-born artist has gathered, sourced or created, grouped together in eight large double-sided light boxes displayed throughout the gallery space. “The collated, overlapping and montaged images are wild and vibrant, a little bit like a Google image search or as though you’ve somehow entered the Internet,” says curator Melanie Oliver. “Their placement on the large screens feels momentary, as though this is just one iteration of many possible permutations, disrupting any typical or static taxonomical order.” “The title Atlas of Anti-Taxonomies itself implies that there are alternative ways to organise, describe and understand the world and its inhabitants,” says Oliver. Taxonomy is the practice and science of categorisation. Frankovich’s Atlas of Anti-Taxonomies visually references the monumental but unfinished Mnemosyne Atlas (1924-29) from German art historian Aby Warburg (18661929). Warburg amassed nearly 1000 photographs of artworks, cosmography, maps, people, places and things, arranged across 63 panels to show how themes, patterns or motifs repeat across different times and places. Atlas of Taxonomies runs until 22 May.

EPARATION ERTAINTY No-one goes into a relationship expecting it to end. But sorting a good prenuptial agreement could save you both added stress and complication if things don’t work out. For support and expertise in relationship property law, talk to our specialists at Saunders & Co across our three Christchurch offices.

Relationship separations are challenging for many different reasons. They are especially difficult emotionally, as anyone who has been through one could tell you.

A

midst heightened emotions and stress, there is a lot that needs to be worked through, especially regarding the division of relationship property. Before formalising the division of assets and the end of a relationship, each party must seek independent legal advice. This means that the parties cannot see the same lawyer or even two lawyers from the same firm. Without such advice, any agreement made will not be binding. Without such advice, any agreement made will not be binding. In New Zealand, when a couple separates the only way to ensure finality is to enter into a legally binding document provided for under the Property (Relationships) Act 1976, often referred to as a ‘separation agreement’. It is common for banks to make finance conditional on entering into such an agreement. Generally, for married couples, or those in a de facto relationship, legislation provides for an equal split of the relationship property regardless of the monetary contributions.

However, there are a number of provisions in the legislation that allows for adjustments to the equal sharing rules. One way to avoid the stress of messy negotiations after the end of a relationship is to enter into an agreement during the relationship. This is known as a contracting out agreement, or pre-nuptial agreement. Generally, a contracting out agreement can be likened to an insurance policy; you hope your house won’t burn down but you insure it anyway. Entering into a contracting out agreement during the early stages of a relationship gives peace of mind to know you are protected if the relationship does not work out. A contracting out agreement is drafted during the relationship, at a time when the parties are communicating well, rather than attempting to reach a resolution after separation, when emotions can be running high. Having the right lawyer guiding you through what can feel like a complicated and stressful process is key. Julia Johnston from Saunders & Co,

partner in charge of the Wigram office, has plenty of experience in this area. When relationships include business assets, then you will also need advice from your accountant and possibly a valuation specialist. GST and income tax implications are something to be wary of, and if your accountant is not a tax specialist, Julia can add unique value as an experienced tax lawyer, without the need to get a further advisor involved. Julia and her team pride themselves in being open with their clients, so that they know what to expect from the process and the timelines involved. “You are doing it for a reason and want it to be valid. Part of my approach is to explain to clients what the process looks like upfront. I give them all the information they need, and an idea of how long things can take.” If you need assistance with your contracting out or separation agreement, contact Julia or anyone in the Saunders & Co relationship property team to help guide you through the process.

Construction costs soar The cost of both residential and non-residential construction rose more than 10 percent last year, and similar forecasts are expected for 2022.

I

n its latest quarterly report, the NZ Infrastructure Commission, Te Waihanga, predicts that infrastructure providers, property developers, and households will all be impacted by labour shortages, material supply chain bottlenecks, and Covid-induced slowdowns. Te Waihanga Director of Economics, Peter Nunns says Covid-19 is not the only cause. “Even before the Covid pandemic, New Zealand struggled to scale up to build and had a heavy reliance on international workforce. This reflects long-term issues

around workforce capacity and capability, material supply chains, and volatility of investment.” He says industry feedback suggests that immigration and MIQ constraints have effectively closed the door on the international workforce, leaving New Zealand critically short of skilled construction workers, which has in turn led to an extremely tight construction labour market fuelling cost pressure. New Zealand’s construction cost inflation is among the highest in the OCED, ranking

10th highest, but again not just because of the Covid-era phenomenon. “Over the last five years, New Zealand had the seventhhighest construction price inflation in the OECD, with residential construction price inflation averaging 5.2 percent

per annum from 2016 to 2021.” Te Waihanga is considering these issues as it develops a New Zealand Infrastructure Strategy to help address cost inflation. The Infrastructure Quarterly Report is available on www.tewaihanga.govt.nz

Take a train ride along this heritage railway based in Waipara. Operated on a 12.8 km length of the former Waiau Branch railway between Waipara and Waikari, it dates back to December 1919. Vintage steam and diesel-electric locomotives convey passengers through the unique limestone beauty of the Weka Pass out of Waipara, thanks to the team of volunteers that run the railway. On the first and third Sunday of every month, the railway operates, initially across flat farmland, passing a large irrigation reservoir and vineyards, before climbing grades to wind through the cuttings in Weka Pass, where seashells and fossils may be seen in the walls of many cuttings. Bookings are recommended. Visit wekapassrailway.co.nz for more information.

Secrets to scents If you received a new scent this season then you are in luck and not alone. Estimates are that the perfume industry is worth more than $33 billion and growing steadily every day, proving we love fragrances. Applying perfume is not just a matter of dabbing or spraying it on. If you want it to linger longer here are some tips to try:

Pulse points:

The neck, wrists, behind the knee and all the way to the ankle are the right places to apply your daily scents. These are locations of pulse points, areas on your body where blood pumps near the skin’s surface. Focus your fragrance here and you’ll be surrounded by a cloud of lovely scent.

Day/night:

Different scents have different effects depending on the time of day. Adopt a lighter scent during the day, ideally an eau de toilette which is light, airy and carries well as we move around and exert energy. Save the heavier and more robust eau de parfum, often distinguished by a musk or spicy accent, for evenings out.

Layering:

Well done, you have chosen the best bouquet for you. Why not add multiple layers by way of lotions, creams and powders in the same scent? This will assist in the longevity of your perfume and keep you surrounded by your chosen fragrance all day long.

Stepping up To offer cool, comfortable, and sustainable products to change the shoe industry, one of the most polluting in the world, is the goal of Saola Shoes.

rom the start, ecoconstruction has been the central pillar behind the European brand. Keeping in step with the #makeanimpact mantra, the company uses recycled and bio-sourced materials, such as BLOOM foam and organic cotton laces, to create their ultralight and durable shoes. Every model is super comfy and light on your feet, with styles for both men and women. Their knitted options are great casual wear, while the

vegan leather styles offer a dressier feel and protection from the elements. Since the beginning, the company’s commitment to sustainability has gone beyond its products. With one percent of its proceeds going to Wildlife Conservation, Saola Shoes are the sustainable kicks that kick back. Find all the latest styles locally in Christchurch at Yonder, in the Guthrey Centre, as well as other independent retailers listed on saola.co.nz.

t’s a natural process but it does not have to be a gruelling one. When teamed with a precision cut, the result is transformative, explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee. “Just because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a silver colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based on hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.”

While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening, lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key!” www.vforhair.co.nz

Rangiora’s new Pilates studio When working out, few methods are recognised as being as safe, effective and suitable for clients of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels as Pilates.

tudio Pilates is amongst the most widely recognised methods. Founded in 2002 by Jade Winter, an ex-Olympic swimmer, and his wife Tanya Winter, a qualified physiotherapist, its programme has changed the way the world works out. The programme is now available in Rangiora, at the South Island’s only Studio Pilates studio, which opened in October last year, headed by Taryn Currie, a personal trainer turned Pilates instructor with over a decade of industry experience. After qualifying in 2015, Taryn fell so in love with the programme that she now proudly owns and operates her own studio. “There are so many incredible benefits to Pilates and I’m so passionate about helping as many people as I can experience the benefits of Studio Pilates,” Taryn says. Managing a team of six highly skilled Pilates Instructors, Taryn adds that, despite Covid-19 challenges, business has never been

better and is growing. “That’s something else unique we offer here – the opportunity for people to train to become fully qualified instructors. Each is so talented and tremendously trusted by our clients, which is really important for me as their leader.” For information on classes, call 03 925 8136, or visit the website. www.studiopilates.com/rangiora

SURREAL HAIR Damage and dryness are some of the most common and frustrating hair concerns. And it’s no surprise. If your hair has become dry or damaged, it’s important to remember that you can hydrate, strengthen and restore your hair with the right hair care regimen. At Surreal, we use Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate. SOUL STUDIO HOT YOGA Practising yoga in a hot studio has many physical and mental health benefits. Physical benefits include an increased heart rate while practising. The cardio workout in the heat can improve circulation to bring nutrient rich blood to skin cells. A hot room also warms the muscles faster which helps increase flexibility. Stretching warm muscles is a lot safer than cold muscles, so a hot studio makes achieving deeper postures and stretches easier and more effective. Soul Studio specialises in hot yoga, with its beautiful, spacious studio ranging from 30-40 deg C. The timetable offers a range of classes from slower pace, restorative yin to powerful, energetic flows, offering something for everyone, from absolute beginners to advanced yogis. 03 335 0208 | www.soulstudio.co.nz 25 Mandeville Street, Riccarton Metropol 17 February, 2022 35

Benefits of a healthy spine Ensuring you have a healthy spine makes sense, because it is the key to holding your entire body together.

Y

our spine holds you upright and protects your spinal cord which is responsible for passing messages to and from the brain. Apart from when your parents and teachers told you to stand up straight, most people don’t put a second thought to their spine until something goes wrong and pain strikes. The Muscle People team are experts in spine related concerns. They explain that the key to having a healthy spine is by maintaining optimum posture and movement patterns. Here are some things you might not know: Your spine helps you to control everyday movement such as bending and twisting. When not taking proper care of your spine (either through poor movement or poor posture), everyday tasks such as sitting, turning, bending and twisting can be very painful. Poor spinal posture, especially for prolonged periods of time, can change the loading on your spine and other parts of body. This can lead to degenerative changes in your spine and other joints. Poor posture can lead to a poor breathing technique. Correct breathing is crucial for good health, energy levels, productivity and quality of life. In short, maintaining a healthy spine increases your quality of life, meaning you are able to do the activities you love for many years to come.

Muscle People’s top tips: With more than 20 years of experience in physiotherapy, the team at Muscle People has a few expert tips. While there are many things that you may have been told, their absolute top tip is that our bodies were not designed to stay in one posture for hours on end. We were designed to move!

Standing: 1. Prolonged standing: If you have to stand for a prolonged period of time, remember to stand in a good posture. Imagine a string is pulling you up from the head, this will gently straighten your spine, then open up your chest and shoulders. 2. Uphill: If you are walking uphill, rather than leaning forward (as might be instinctual), place your arm behind your back and walk tall.

Sitting: 1. Positioning: Just like standing, you need to sit up straight with your shoulders gently pulled back and your bottom right back in the chair. Make sure you have a good chair and if needed, add a lumbar roll. 2. Crossing legs: If you like to cross your legs while sitting, make sure to alternate which leg you are crossing to avoid incorrect spinal curvature. 3. Breaks: No-one can sit perfectly for eight hours – remember to take regular breaks to loosen your muscles and avoid tension. Don’t let pain persist. Muscle People are open and operating, and are ready to help get you back to your best. Get in touch today, call 0800 027 194, or book an appointment online.

The sleep cycle Once we fall asleep, our bodies enter a sleep cycle that has four different stages. The first three stages are NREM (non-rapid eye movement) and the last stage is REM (rapid eye movement). Stage 1: light sleep where your muscles relax, and your heart rate, breathing, and eye movements start to slow down. Typically, this stage lasts several minutes.

Sound asleep When it comes to health and wellbeing, getting enough sleep is as vital as regular exercise and a healthy diet.

H

aving sleep troubles is common, and not so surprising considering the fast pace and busyness of so many people’s lives. Ensuring you are getting enough sleep each night will help in all areas of your wellness, while also increasing productivity and focus, managing stress, boosting your immune system, preventing weight gain, improving memory, and many others.

Some tips to help improve your sleep:

REM: the first REM stage typically occurs 90 minutes after you fall asleep. Eyes move back and forth quickly under your eyelids, while breathing rate, heart rate, and blood pressure begin to increase. This stage is where most dreaming occurs.

Maintain a comfortable temperature in your bedroom, and low light levels using lamps Ensure you have a comfortable mattress, pillows, and sheets Try to avoid screens from mobile phones, television, and other electronic devices in the bedroom and close to bedtime. Don’t consume caffeine, alcohol, or large meals close to bedtime Exercise earlier in the day rather than to evenings, to ensure you can wind down properly before bed

Breaking bread Something about bread offers ultimate comfort.

M

aybe it is the simplicity of it or the smell of a fresh bakery loaf, but there is no denying the delicious experience of enjoying freshly baked bread (even better warm with a touch of butter). Making your own may seem daunting. Kneading, pulling,

Here are a few tips to get you started.

waiting, rising, baking. It is quite a process and to turn out with a flat, dry, dense loaf is almost enough to put you off altogether. Those that make homemade bread will tell you that once you find your technique, it really is quite simple.

Follow the recipe. It might seem obvious, but straying from the exact recipe to use your own techniques and measurements is not going to give you the same result. Start with a simple bread. You don’t need to be making garlic cheese stuffed twists on your first go. Focaccia, ciabatta, or a seed loaf are all good options to start. Check your yeast. If you have had a packet of yeast sitting in the back of your pantry for a few years… this won’t do. Expired yeast is no good, so check your dates. Watch your oven. Once your dough is in the oven, you need to babysit it. If it’s browning too quickly on one side, rotate it. Don’t be scared to get involved and move it around.

Courtesy of Keepers MAKES ONE LARGE OR TWO SMALL LOAVES

Mix the yeast, flour and sugar in a stand mixer. Pour in the water and mix with the dough hook for 10–12 minutes. The mixture is quite a bit wetter than a normal bread dough and it’s quite sticky.

2. Pour the dough out onto a floured

surface. If you would prefer two smaller loaves, separate the dough into 2 at this point, before you start making air pockets. Using floured hands, you want to knead, pull, stretch and slap the dough for another 4–5 minutes. By pulling at parts of the dough, stretching it up and then slapping it back down onto the rest of the dough, you create the beautiful air pockets we want to see, so spend a bit of time and add more flour as needed to keep the dough as one. Flour an oven tray, and as you move the dough or doughs onto this, gently prod it/them into loaf shape/s.

3. Drizzle with oil and cover with

plastic wrap. Leave in the hotwater cupboard or somewhere warm for 2–3 hours.

Declutter your pantry & palate WORDS CHARLIE FOX

A cluttered pantry can lead to a cluttered mind, and a lack of inspiration when it comes to cooking. Why not have a tidy up and discover your stockpiled groceries too. Knowing what you have on hand and what has been hiding behind that can of baby corn for far too long can help revive your cooking inspiration, and just in time for the change of seasons.

1.

Clean slate

If you’re going to do this properly, set time aside, pull everything out, and give it a good clean before you try to organise anything. We have said goodbye to 2021, so make sure your pantry does too. Check those expiry dates. If you don’t think you will use items that are still good to go, why not donate them to a local food bank?

2.

Create accessibility

3.

Create space

4.

Create order

Baskets are a terrific way to utilise high and low spaces that are often hard to access. They are great for sturdy produce such as potatoes and onions, or to keep all the smaller products, jars, and bags together so they don’t get lost at the back somewhere out of sight.

Create more space by adding extendable or stepped shelves to add usable height. You can also move things like spices to available drawers to keep them together or try adding a hanging rack to the inside of your pantry door.

Using the same type of storage containers (and labelling them) means things are easier to stack and help achieve the most out of your space. Keep it simple with glass jars or classic click-clack storage.

Popular kitchen trends for 2022

The National Kitchen and Bathroom Association of New Zealand (NKBA) annual Trends Survey predicts timbers such as oak and walnut, along with porcelain benchtops, will be in big demand this year.

S

iobhan Nolan of Lily and Forbes Interior Design in Christchurch says that there

has been a shift away from greys and whites as people select timber tones to warm up

their homes. “Natural products are a fantastic choice as they bring a real warmth and personality to a space. We use a lot of melamine products, but if budget allows, we like to utilise veneer if possible. “Melamine options are getting more realistic with texture and colour tones. There is a lot of choice,” says Siobhan. For the first time, porcelain is predicted to be the benchtop of choice in 2022. The ultra-durable material has been slowly rising in popularity over the years, and is now the preferred material for

many designers, with 46 percent predicting it to be in every new kitchen in 2022. The finish to many kitchens is the splash back, with more and more homeowners choosing to make a statement. For 2022, NKBA members say splash backs will be seamless with the bench. Siobhan says that a seamless bench to splash back is contemporary and high end. “It means no grout lines which makes it easy to maintain and keep clean. It also gives people another way to display their beautiful stone and porcelain,” she adds,

Kitchen costs vary O

verall kitchen trends in 2022 will see modern and contemporary spaces reign supreme with integrated appliances and smart technology. Predicted prices vary. Thirty-one percent of survey respondents estimate that said a kitchen will cost $40,000-$60,000, while 25 percent say they are able to create a space for $20,000-$30,000, and 13

percent of respondents believe a kitchen will cost upwards of $80,000. Suzie Rees, Executive Officer of NKBA says that the large disparity between prices demonstrates that there isn’t a one size fits all kitchen. “Our NKBA designers and manufacturers design and build a huge array of kitchens at many different price

points. It’s really important that when working with a designer you are clear on your budget, but that you also understand that many of the kitchens you see in magazines and on Instagram are big budget with quality finishes and luxury products. It’s about striking a balance between what you want and what you can afford,” says Suzie.

Time to get crafty The Cricut Maker 3 is a machine that has the potential to change the appearance of almost everything in your home. Metropol’s gadget guru Ian Knott gets his art and craft on.

I

f you’re of the crafty persuasion, in that you have a spare room at home full of material, card, coloured paper, glue, buttons, glitter and the like, then the brand Cricut (pronounced like ‘cricket’) will be one you’re well familiar with. While I’m a graphic designer and casual sketcher, crafts is one creative outlet that I’ve never really felt the need to explore. Until now, that is, thanks to the versatile Cricut Maker 3. The Maker 3 looks like a printer crossed with a laminator, but is actually a cutting machine capable of precisely cutting (or embossing) shapes out of over 300 different materials, ranging from paper, card and fabric, to matboard, leather and balsa wood. Using the supplied Design Space software (or in conjunction with any other imaging software), you can upload, design, draw and layout your project on screen before sending it to the Maker 3 to speedily cut it out of your chosen material, and with pinpoint accuracy. Design Space comes complete with over 100-ready-to-go craft projects that will get the

whole family involved. There are also numerous websites, and hundreds of YouTube videos dedicated to Cricut projects. Good craft suppliers, such as Spotlight for example, carry a great range of Cricut materials and accessories. Infusable inks for t-shirt designs, heat transfers, temporary and permanent vinyls for wall or vehicle decals, and different cutting heads for the more heavy duty jobs. The Maker 3 walks you through the short set-up and online registration using your Windows or Mac computer. It also has two hand built-in tool caddies for storing your scissors and necessary tools to make your crafting easier. To date I’ve successfully put a vinyl logo on my drink bottle, some custom anime graphics on my son’s, and am in the process of designing and measuring out some branding decals for my car. And it’s been all too easy to do. At a shade under $800, the Maker 3 is a bit of an outlay, but a dedicated and creative crafter could easily make it pay for itself in no time.

Cricut Maker 3 Can cut 300+ different materials Supplied design software is simple to use Twice as fast as previous models Cut patterns up to 3.66m long Cricut and 3rd party materials readily available

Make a move to kwila

The benefits of kwila outdoor furniture are many.

A

side from the beautiful colour it comes in, kwila is known for its durability, minimal shrinkage, resistance to splitting and being able to withstand harsh saltwater environments. All of these make it ideal for outdoor furniture and that’s why a visit to Kenneally Timber Products is on the cards. Not only does it have a huge selection – arguably the biggest in New Zealand – it also has a purpose-built showroom on Blakes Road in Belfast to show off the extensive range and is currently offering 20 percent off all its kwila products. Owner Declan Kenneally says every piece comes with a five-year guarantee, and the team is always on hand to help clients.

Round folding table with 4 Windsor chairs “They have a great deal of knowledge about the range, and every client receives personalised service to ensure they get the pieces that suit their lifestyle. Our clients are everyone from people furnishing their own homes and baches to professional landscapers, hospitality settings, and we wholesale to commercial clients too,” says Declan. The vast range of tables and chairs can all be mixed and matched, and the furniture comes flat packed with some assembly required. Tables are rectangular, round, folding, some with an umbrella hole built in, and are available in settings with two chair options. Open six days a week, Kenneally’s kwila kingdom awaits. www.kenneallytimber.co.nz

Plus, it’ll be much quicker and more affordable to repaint your walls that it will be to replace your sofa. Try using each of your accent hues in at least three places within the room so that your colour scheme feels cohesive. Look to cushions, throws, side tables, plant pots, vases, candle holders, artwork, rugs and other decorative accents to carry your colour palette across the space. hen it comes to restful and relaxing colours for the walls of your major living spaces, blue simply can’t be beat. Peaceful, calm and gentle, blue has tremendous power

When choosing the right shade of blue to use on your walls, it’s best advised to go for a soft and dusty shade for a calming effect. In this serene lounge, the walls feature Resene Frozen, a cool winter grey blue, introspective, modest and delicate. While it’s a great paint colour in its own right, even more softness can be gained by layering it with a second hue applied as a feathery paint effect. That’s where Resene Nepal, a muted grey blue pastel, comes in – which is a great option over purer blues that may seem too harsh. Your sofa is often one of your largest furniture investments in your home, so it’s smart to choose one that’s both comfortable and flexible enough to work with a range of colours and décor. Crafting dream homes If home renovation is on your New Year’s resolution list, go easy on yourself and find a craftsman who can take care of windows and doors, kitchens, vanities and wardrobes in one easy stroke.

F

ind a joiner that has been in the trade for 32 years, and who works with a small team that makes client satisfaction their goal. Choose a joiner whose skill is a bit of a well-kept secret in the local building trade. In fact, go straight to Timber Tru and talk to Tony van der Plas about your 2022 project. Tony leads a small team who cover the gamut from a total renovation job to a bespoke vanity or wardrobe. “We really

do offer everything you need in joinery,” says Tony. “Probably half of our business is replacing or replicating character wooden windows and doors, and the other half is creating brand new kitchens, bathroom joinery and wardrobes.” The company’s website photos are testament to the sheer range of joinery skills the team have at their fingertips. Clients find their way to Timber Tru

through word of mouth. Tony and his team are destination joiners for both in-the-know private clients and builders. “We frequently replace older windows, and create windows to suit character homes where the owners are extending, or adding on,” says Tony. They also make wooden French doors and bi-folds to match existing windows and doors. A current project involves creating five large double hung sash windows for the Cotters building in High Street. “It is an historic façade, and recreating those authentic details is a passion for us,” says Tony. Jobs come in from Banks Peninsula, Ohoka, and Rangiora as well as Christchurch. “We’re busy,” says Tony, “but I’m really happy with the size of our business at the moment because it means we can focus on crafting bespoke pieces that give us great satisfaction and our clients a lot of joy.” Now is an ideal time to bring those illfitting and damaged doors and windows to the attention of Tony and his team. They’ll have them working perfectly and looking beautiful before winter sets in. Tony does have one piece of advice for character home owners. “It would be really great if people would begin their repairs before things get too bad. It is rewarding for all if we can repair and restore, rather than needing to start from scratch with a door or window.” Whether you are looking for a total renovation job or a small fix, join those in the know and talk to Tony at Timber Tru.

build

Built for all climates Christchurch has extremes in climate – icy cold in winter and long hot summers. Living in a home that remains at a constant healthy temperature range all year round in every room of the house really makes sense.

C

hristchurch builder Martin Smith became disillusioned with building to the current building code standard, “it is too low for a climate like Christchurch has.” He discovered eHaus – a revolutionary method of building that is performance based, and

was successful in taking on the eHaus Christchurch Licence. “The science behind every eHaus built on PassivHaus principles is impressive. Once you see the results it’s pretty hard to ignore,” says Martin. “The key is the computer energy

modelling done at the preliminary design stage. This takes into account the local climate conditions, the site and orientation of the house, and the specific design of the house including window sizes and positions. This gives you the confidence to know your home is going to perform before a single stake is put in the ground,” says Martin. “Fresh filtered air is circulated through the whole house, and you save up to 90 percent of the heating costs of a standard house. This performance is locked in for the life of the house simply by the way it’s designed and built.” Contact Martin today to talk about building your home the eHaus way, 027 227 4423. www.ehaus.co.nz

Many of us of a certain age – and with children also of a certain age – will be acutely aware of the concept of the ‘Bank of Mum & Dad’. In fact, not so long ago I wrote about it, but seeing it more and more has persuaded me to highlight some new conclusions. Essentially, it’s usually the short-term provision of funds to assist with a house purchase. This can be by means of acting as a guarantor, which I have seen come to great grief, or by lending (for some gifting) money. Providing funds by its very nature can become extremely complicated, given parents don’t always realise exactly what they could be getting into … and many of the recipients may not be as appreciative of this incredible gesture as they should be. It’s also an international phenomenon. Research undertaken by Mark Bogard, CEO of the Family Building Society (London), discovered this; The ‘Bank of Mum & Dad’ is something of a misnomer because most parents (and grandparents) don’t behave like banks. They may or may not utilize any legal frameworks or even take advice as well as apply any financial overview of their adult children’s affairs. In fact in some cases – beneficiaries had higher incomes than their parents. There was also often no transactional record of what was happening or repayment schedule documented in writing. And what happens when there’s more than one child and a sense of fairness weighs heavily on both the parents’ means and conscience.

home staging with a difference

Compare all of this to the latest requirements of banks here in New Zealand where the C.C.C.F.A. (Consumer Credit Contract and Finance Act) has created the scenario where lenders can use an extremely regulated approach to determining whether or not the applicant can afford loan repayments. Applicants must provide three months of recent consecutive bank statements, and these are reconciled against what’s been disclosed on the loan application. The banks are looking for restraint with discretionary spending in the three-month period prior to a formal finance proposal. So, what’s ‘discretionary’ spending? The gym, daily coffees, eating out, clothes, Netflix, flowers, Lotto! Yes, there is nowhere to hide, so if you look at actual banks and the ‘family bank’, I’d like to say this – if your parents are helping in any way, be it with funds, as guarantor, or support and labour at the new property, and you haven’t had to cut off your Spotify account, or reduce your number of bought coffee’s! You may be the last generation to derive benefits like this. After all, this world of ours is always changing.

Remembering the past

Resilience and unity

At this time of year our thoughts inevitably turn to 22 February 2011 and the people and places that we lost on that day.

Recent government announcements provide a flicker of light at the end of the tunnel for many businesses, especially those grappling with a shortage of skilled labour.

On past anniversaries we have gathered with the families of those killed or injured in the earthquake to collectively express our grief, our sorrow and our gratitude to all those who came to our aid. This year there will be no such public gathering. Instead, we will find our own ways to reflect on that day. While 22 February will always be a sad day, I will also remain optimistic for the future of our city, and the place it is becoming. Visitors to the city, especially those who haven’t been here for a while, are excited by what they see. People are now lining up to

buy central city apartments within walking distance of amazing attractions like Tūranga and the Riverside Market, as well as Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic and the protections that have been put in place to help stop the spread of the virus mean central city businesses have had a hard time. Sadly, it’s going to get worse before it gets better judged by overseas experience. But it will get better, and we will once again be able to make the most of our new city.

The tight labour market is evident in the record numbers of jobs advertised online and in the many case studies from local business of opportunity cost and opportunity lost. Meanwhile our region still has 32 percent more jobseekers than it did pre-Covid-19. Addressing this mis-match of skills available versus skills required is the focus of much work across the public and private sector. This multi-horizon mahi is crucial to continue sustainable growth in several of our region’s key sectors. Our food, fibre and agritech sector is being fuelled by strong international demand, the city’s tech, aerospace and manufacturing sectors are expanding and healthrelated businesses are

being stretched. We applaud the employers already innovating to retain and develop staff through flexible working, culture and values, enhanced tools of trade, internships, cadetships, apprenticeships and professional development. Also, those employers exploring automation and process improvement. Alongside a range of city partners, ChristchurchNZ is supporting multiple skills pathways programs and bringing attention to the needs of the region’s employers and a prosperous economy. Christchurch has repeatedly proven its resilience and unity. These traits are sure to position the city strongly for all that 2022 brings.

Support local

Staying on an even keel

The news that New Zealand’s border will gradually reopen at the end of this month is welcome news to many of us. It marks a longawaited opportunity to reunite with separated family, catch up with friends and reconnect with the rest of the world.

It’s going to be another fascinating year for the property market.

Attracting skilled workers to our shores, resuming tourism and allowing our exporters to engage with their customers are critical ingredients in our economic recovery plan. It can’t happen soon enough. As Covid-19 becomes a part of our day-to-day lives, as it has in other countries, we need to focus on returning to business as usual. It is important to remember that the ‘red traffic light’ is not a lockdown, but unfortunately it is a red light on some businesses who are already experiencing a significant downturn in revenue. As the Omicron variant spreads, more and more

events are being cancelled, people are following government guidelines and opting to work from home and restrictions are atrophying business. The impact on our hospitality sector in particular is crippling. This has a significant consequence on local businesses here in the Canterbury region who unlike in previously lockdowns, do not have the same level of financial support available to them. Please continue to support local where you can, go to your local café and visit retailers. They’re doing it tough.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT - CONCEPT TO COMPLETION

The recent move to red is a clear signal that Covid’s disruption is not yet done, which may cause some turbulent times for the New Zealand economy and property market in the months ahead. The total value of residential real estate reached $1.72 trillion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2021, up from $1.35 trillion at the end of 2020, with mortgages secured against 19 percent of that value. Household debt is high relative to income, and to some extent the debt has only been sustainable recently because of low mortgage rates. Rising home loan interest rates mean households will have to adjust their finances quickly to ensure they stay on an even keel. All borrowers are having to

face the reality of significant mortgage rate increases. While future rate rises could be smaller and slower than recent ones, we can’t overlook the fact that about 60 percent of existing loans need to be refinanced within the next 12 months. Anybody who fixed for a year in about April/May 2021 could potentially see their mortgage rate double when they review midthis year, which can have a significant impact on household budgets. The good news is that we [CoreLogic] suspect that by mid-2022 the balance of power could tip towards home buyers. It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see average value growth slow from almost 30 percent in 2021 to single digits in 2022.

As home builds journey the complexities of evolving building trends, the value of this raw material’s architectural design potential only expands. Lifestyle choices mature, beckoning homeowners to not only reflect their design styles but their ethical views too. How? By continuing to utilise sustainably grown Aotearoa pine, their solid timber builds, carbon-negative upon completion. Modelling his vision, around the Scandinavian love for the outdoors and log cabin style lifestyle, Monni Fraemohs paved the way for current innovative timber builds through progressive interlocking kitset system design options. A Fraemohs home frames reflections of nature that complement human interaction through the language of excellent craftsmanship. nd for anyone taking on a new build, knowing that the company you’re working with can be relied on for sticking to the budget and timeline, is a top priority. Cordial Homes saw the writing on the wall, anticipating supply disruption in the construction sector, and started planning for it early in the Covid-19 pandemic. Company directors Hardik Patel and Jason Williams anticipated inconsistencies in timber availability by switching to steel framing, which Hardik says has no supply issues. “And we were the first company using full steel frame for three and four storey houses, including cantilever balconies in Christchurch and Queenstown.” He says they have reliable sources for all structural materials, foundation materials and cladding. “It is sourced from Australia and New Zealand. We can get most external joinery and framing onsite with two to four weeks’ notice, many other companies are waiting six months.” Consistency is there from the start, with Hardik being the first point of contact for clients and he’ll be with you every step of the way. He is the company’s engineer and project manager and will start by sitting down with clients to work on their existing ideas or plans or start completely from scratch. Then he will go into the intricate details of costing, ensuring clients are fully informed on what their home will cost. If a client wants to

know how much something like central heating, or changes in plan will add to the budget, he can tell them straight away. “I can tell a customer the areas where they can save money, the things that they might be able to do without and the areas that they can accentuate, like the best way to make the most of views.” Aiming for as few surprises as possible, clients get an accurate time-line for when the build will be completed. “And because of the various disruptions over the past two years, we’re informing our customers right from the start that there could be delays which are outside of our control.” Jason Williams has over 20 years experience as a Licensed Building Practitioner and looks after onsite management, overseeing the 100 builds that they have on the go in 2022, using five teams of builders, which includes their own staff and contractors. The beauty of working with a management team like this is that so much is achieved within it, including the ability to customise your design, and have it signed off. New hands on the wrench After 40 years, one wife, two children, living at three different addresses in the same street, and training six apprentices, it’s time for Richard Crouch to hand over the wrench to his number one son.

e’s the R in RJ Crouch, the plumbing and gas fitting company, founded in 1981 that is now in the hands of his son, Tom Crouch. “He’s been instructed to look after my customers, the good ones stay with you for life,” says Richard. At least one, John Nichols Construction, has been with Richard since day one. ”He was a butcher, he then became a builder,” he laughs. The now-68-year-old Richard, is a St Andrew’s College old boy and says at the time he attended the school most of the boys were sons of self-made men. “And many of them became customers of mine.” The plumbing business’ story began 50 years ago, in 1972, when Richard was taken on as an apprentice for the Sleight brothers, whose company is also still operating today. After completing the five years training, he was encouraged by his bosses to do his OE, and having UK ancestry Richard and then-girlfriend Jane, headed away. When they returned to Christchurch, Richard, who could now work expertly in the imperial and metric systems, married Jane, his lifelong partner, and launched the plumbing business. Then, that bundle of joy Tom came along who, destiny decided, would work in the family business

and would one day take over from his dad. “Originally, Tom was going to go to Dunedin to study surveying then changed his mind. He decided that he wanted to work for dad. We were horrified,” Richard laughs. Richard and Jane, who also stepped back from the business last year, have complete confidence in their son. Tom returned to New Zealand after being operations manager for 10 years at a large plumbing company in Sydney, overseeing 35 plumbers. “I’m still around and I still do jobs. I just call Tom and ask if there’s anything for me to do. Of course, he’s never going to say no.” Richard says Tom will be growing the business while still maintaining the customer-focused ethos that it’s had from the start. Meanwhile, he and Jane have plans to have very few plans. “We’re looking forward to being footloose and fancy free.” Carrying on where his parents left off, Tom is joined by his partner Claire and hopes to have as strong a business and personal partnership as his mum and dad did. Give the new RJ Crouch boss Tom a call on 027 535 5163 or email admin@rjcrouch.co.nz, he might just send out the old boss to your plumbing job.

Cool, collaborative outcomes Respect and enthusiasm for historic buildings joins determination, solid building knowledge, and craftsmanship within T&A Construction. Renowned with the developers and designers for the fabulous result on the Public Trust building among others, the team is in the process of adding two more gorgeous phoenix-style repairs and renovations to its portfolio.

ith Box 112 once more at the helm of the projects and 360 Architecture leading design, T&A complete the partnership which will see the MED building and the New City Hotel looking more gorgeous and stronger than ever. “Our three companies share the common goal of achieving outrageously cool outcomes,” says Aaron Walker, director of T&A. The MED building in in Armagh Street opposite the Margaret Mahy playground is nearing the end of a full repair and renovation. Already fully rented, T&A crafted the fitout. The spaces include offices plus a double height art gallery on the east side. “The art gallery is a space where the public can experience the joy of the interior of the building.” Retaining the openspace character, original elements are saved plus recycled timbers and rimu flooring is incorporated. The exterior is brought back to life with structural repairs and a gorgeous paint job. “It was looking a bit sad and now it is looking sharp,” says Aaron. The strengthening on MED was not too onerous. Having been built by the Government for the electricity sector back in the day, its original engineering was more robust than most of its contemporaries. The art deco New City Hotel is the next lucky building to

receive the dream-team’s magic. Built over 90 years ago, it was operating as a backpackers and pub until 2018. Its second chapter will include hospitality and retail on the ground floor and some signature cool offices above. A small brick building on Bath Street will be a stylish office. Box 112 is accepting interest from lessees now for occupation in 2023, “but on experience with Public Trust and MED, people will need to be quick,” says Aaron. New City will require more intensive strengthening, and the exterior will be revived “with full love and a beautiful paint job,” says Aaron. Inside will see retention of as many character features as possible, with recycled materials and plenty of glass to ensure the office spaces are light and bright. While T&A work on a myriad of projects from small office fitouts to architectural home builds, heritage is a specialty and a passion. “My favourite part is that we are involved from due diligence prepurchase, through concept design and budget, to completion. We are also responsible for ongoing maintenance of the buildings. I love that T&A becomes a part of Christchurch’s past and we then oversee that heritage into the future.”
