through the cracks, diagnosed too late for a positive outcome.
Every year 3400 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, and 600 die from it, despite a comprehensive early detection programme starting in 2017.
Colorectal cancer diagnoses amount to 1500 women and 1700 men annually, with 1200 deaths. A comprehensive early detection programme was also started in 2017 for colorectal cancer.
The cervical cancer detection programme (dating back to 1991) diagnoses 160 cases each year, with about 50 deaths recorded.
Now there are calls for an early detection programme for prostate cancer, with which more than 4000 men are diagnosed every year, and more than 700 die.
Throughout each year, various months, weeks, and days are dedicated to a variety of insidious diseases, many of them cancers.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a call for women of all ages to check, or be checked, for lumps in their breasts.
Early detection of cancers of any type reduces the number of people who die from them. We are lucky to have numerous early-detection programmes in New Zealand, although some people still slip
Nationwide screening programmes have already saved thousands of people from dying of cancers, and could save many more. Maybe it’s time to be more prostate proactive, rather than just an ambulance at the bottom of a cli .
To all those women out there, don’t forget to do your lump examinations, and at the same time encourage the men in your lives to support their own beneficial early detection programme. After all prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in men in New Zealand. A quick check may save a life.

Many women will be familiar with the beautiful purple and pink glass jars and bottles housing Emma Lewisham’s eponymous skincare line, although not necessarily with her story.
Since 2016, Emma’s mission has revolved around providing luxurious skincare that is scientifically proven and 100% natural, uplifting, educating, and empowering people, and in “planet positive” skincare through leading a movement towards a circular, climate positive, and transparent industry.
While it sounds like a large task, she is well on her way.
Emma’s always thrived in a challenging environment, initially as the sole female, senior executive in a global technology company. The catalyst for change came in 2016, when she lost her beloved mother to cancer.
“I realised no-one is invincible,” she explains. “It was a period of pause for me, of deep introspection, of bringing me down to Earth. I’d prioritised work over wellness for 10 years, now it was time to look after my health.”
While visiting her doctor to discuss pregnancy, Emma was questioned about her skincare routine and, to her horror, discovered a product she was using to combat hyperpigmentation included the extremely controversial active ingredient hydroquinone.
Banned in the United Kingdom, Europe and Japan, the use and dangers of hydroquinone in beauty products became a lightbulb moment for Emma, and she began her own research into understanding every ingredient that she applied to her skin.
Used to using luxurious, high-tech products, and wanting the natural equivalents, she soon discovered 100% natural, scientifically proven skincare nowhere to be found. “There needed to be a compromise between having natural formulations and having something that actually works.”
While she never set out to start a beauty brand, in 2019 Emma launched the first of the collection that bears her name; a world first carbon-positive beauty brand soon after that, thanks to the company’s unwavering sustainable ethos, refillable packaging, and landmark circular model that’s forging a new path for others to follow.
With glowing endorsements from celebrities such as Margot Robbie to one of Emma’s own personal heroes, iconic environmentalist Dr Jane Goodall, Emma sees herself as being in the business of making people look good, while doing good.
Using cutting edge skincare science, the formulas are engineered with up to 25 meticulously chosen ingredients that individually perform a function, but in synergy work to amplify each other.
“The most powerful way to interact with the skin is by harnessing nature, therefore we only use natural ingredients, harnessing both bio-identical ingredients found within the skin as well as the specialised, scientifically proven natural plant extracts. These bio-active ingredients work in harmony with the skin to trigger powerful cellular responses that deliver unparalleled results,” says Emma.
Creating each product takes patience and determination, especially when layering in Emma’s uncompromising promises around responsible sourcing, sustainable packaging and zero tolerance for animal testing (including on any singular ingredient - not just the finished product itself. She sees her role as setting a new benchmark in beauty, while at the same time creating a positive impact on your skin, your wellbeing and your planet.
Her message is getting out, evidenced by her involvement in the recent London Fashion Week. Partnering with designer Molly Goddard for her spring/summer 2024 show, Emma’s natural, science-backed products were used solely by Molly’s beauty team to create a skin-focused beauty look on their models. The skincare routine backstage stimulated blood flow and lifted the skin, leaving models looking fresh-faced, glowing from within and confident.
The London show was an important advancement for the brand, says Emma. “We are currently focused on championing our new
Space NK partnership as the first and only New Zealand skincare brand to launch at the iconic United Kingdom retailer. We have a few exciting global retail launches in the near pipeline, too.”
In the meantime, the 3 October 2023 launch of Emma’s new Supernatural Blemish Serum will be the first and only new product for 2023, although she promises more next year. “We only bring to-market formulations that are supported by robust clinical data to prove performance.”
Maintain a consistent morning and evening skincare routine, eat nutrient-dense healthy foods, and drink lots of water.
One product I can’t live without at the moment it is our new Supernatural Blemish Serum, which will be available globally from 3 October, including at MECCA’s Christchurch store. Its live probiotic not only prevents blemishes from appearing, it also balances the skin microbiome which is essential for optional skin health and condition. A healthy microbiome is at the heart of clear, balanced and radiant skin, and I have noticed such a huge di erence in my skin health since using this product.
Throughout the seasons, my base routine and products remain the same, however I adapt the frequency that I use some of my products based on how my skin is reacting to my environment. For example, I use my Supernatural Sleeping Mask more when my skin is feeling drier, whether this is due to a change in season or prolonged periods of travel where my skin is exposed to air conditioning.
Paul
Hi, my name is Paul and I’m a birdaholic.
I’ve always wanted to say that,” he laughs. Paul explains that many people think bird photography is an addiction, and in some ways it is. “You’re constantly itching to get out and experience nature, and see what birds are around and what they’re doing. It takes over, and it’s the kind of addiction I can definitely get behind.”
An I.T. solutions guru with his own business for the past 20 years, Paul works with the local pharmacy industry, helping to keep his clients’ businesses running smoothly. When Covid-19 struck, he was an essential worker, ensuring that his clients were able to provide the services needed during those stressful times.
“It was about the time of the first lockdown that I picked up a camera that had been gifted to me by one of my clients and headed out to the beach to take some shots (socially distanced of course),” he recalls.
The shots were rubbish, he adds, so he started watching YouTube videos. “After a while, I had one of those ‘A-ha’ moments which opened my eyes to how to do better with the camera (thanks Attilio Ru o). I headed out again and started getting some better shots, so I shared them on local Facebook pages and started getting a few positive comments.
“Fast forward 12 months and I was deep into being a landscape photographer. I loved getting out in the world, and looking for something cool or beautiful to point my camera at. About this time I upgraded my camera to something better suited to landscapes and thought there was no stopping me. “
Around February 2021 one of the Facebook groups Paul belonged to had a “Birds” theme month. “My friend Pete and I thought we should give this a crack and headed out to take a few shots. Before I knew it, I was hooked.
“I’ve been addicted to things in the past, but never had an addiction taken hold so quickly. Before long I was always out looking for birds, reading about local birds on the internet, and learning their calls. My partner thinks I’m mad, but thankfully she hasn’t killed me in my sleep just yet.”
Paul says he quickly realised that his landscapes camera wasn’t the best for bird photography. “Not fast enough, autofocus not up to it, that sort of thing. I started looking for an alternative and found Dream Gear Hire here in Christchurch, run by a guy whose mission is to help people reach their dreams in photography.
“We quickly sorted out some loan kit, and I was back out with a longer lens, better camera and, as a result, better shots. Since that time I’ve upgraded my own gear, but I still have one of his biggest wildlife lenses which helps me get the shots I love to take.”
Paul admits he is still on the hunt for a great landscape shot, and also enjoys photographing his stepson’s football games during the season. “Sports photography is much like wildlife photography. There is not time to setup a shot. It’s happening right in front of you, and it’s up to you to capture that moment. Miss it and it’s gone.
“I love that about what I do, but birds are where it’s at for me.” Being creative with the lens is an integral part of his addiction. “I love to create something with amazing light, an incredible pose and a great composition. I’m learning all the time, I just love that about this stu .”
About 18 months ago, Paul setup a local Facebook group called Waitaha Bird Lovers, which he describes as a place for the lovers of birds in Canterbury to see amazing shots of local birds taken by some of the best photographers in the region. “We have members as young as 15 and as old as 80, it’s a great thriving community.”
Paul is often asked how to get started in bird photography. Here are his tips:
Wildlife and bird photography require patience, persistence, and practice. The more you do, the more your skills improve.
Proper equipment. You need a lens capable of getting you close to the action because for the most part birds really won’t let you get close. Most photographers work with lenses from 400mm to 600mm, and some have mighty weapons that get to 800mm and beyond. You’ll also need a good camera body. We are in the age of the mirrorless cameras now with autofocus systems that leave you stunned how accurate they are. Whether you buy Sony, Nikon, Olympus or my favourite Canon, you really can’t go wrong with any camera system nowadays.
Learn about your camera, get close, stay quiet and look for clean backgrounds. “The best advice I received was from local photographer Anne Lamb. Sadly she passed last year, but when we would speak she kept saying ‘Get Bloody Closer!’ And it works. The closer you can get the higher quality the shot. Sometimes you have to get down in the mud and crawl, but when you get that shot, there’s nothing better.
Francis tells Metropol why he’s dedicated to photographing the country’s feathered friends.
Amongst the names of those recognised in the King’s Birthday and Coronation Honours List of 2023 was local businessman and entrepreneur Simon Challies. Metropol writer Céline Gibson explains why.
Simon Challies says it felt extraordinary and meaningful to receive the New Zealand Order of Merit (for services to people with neurological conditions) because it is such a traditional honour.
“The Honours List isn’t a modern thing, and I didn’t appreciate how much work is involved behind the scenes to be nominated until I received the award,” says the 53-year-old director of BrainTree.
It was in 2006 that life for Simon, as he knew it, was to take a major turn. Always a physically active person, Simon began noticing that around 20 minutes into his usual run, his body would seize up.
“My right side went dead. I would have to stop for a few minutes then start up again.”
Finally, after five years of seeing doctors and specialists, Simon was referred by a physiotherapist to a neurologist. His symptoms had become more apparent, post-earthquake, and six months later Simon received his diagnosis – Parkinson’s disease.
As managing director of Ryman Healthcare at the time, Simon wondered how he could continue in that role.
“I rationalised that I could be run over by a bus tomorrow, and that the diagnosis wasn’t a death sentence. I had to lead the team, so I told them I would continue in the job while I was able to, and the directors were all good about that.”
If being given a Parkinsons diagnosis was the critical moment in his life, ironically it also proved to be the defining moment of change in relation to his career path.
One year after his diagnosis, Simon went to Oregon, to consult with a specialist who was recommended throughout North America as the best person on movement disorders.
“I really wanted information on new treatments available, or what might be on the horizon, and the specialist said, ‘You do realise that the drugs haven’t really changed since the 60s and 70s? It’s still pretty much variations of Levodopa.’”
The specialist then told Simon that the people who dealt best with these conditions ate healthily, challenged themselves physically and mentally, kept up social contacts, and got good sleep.
On realising there was no cure in the immediate or foreseeable future, Simon understood he just had to take the specialist’s advice and make it work.
Once home from Oregon, Simon began thinking about how he could use his business acumen to make a di erence for people living with neurological disorders.
“I had a lot of experience in Ryman by that time, but it changed my philosophy on life. In those years from 2011 onwards, I really had a major insight and understanding into the lives of the residents and caregivers. It was a turning point.”
Simon stood down from Ryman in 2017, and in that same year, The Canterbury Brain Collective - a partnership between Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Canterbury, and Dementia Canterburywas established.
Simon says the birth of BrainTree (now also home to Stroke Foundation NZ) came from a practical place. The former premises of Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Canterbury was in a terrible state and awaiting demolition.
“I took the view they shouldn’t be in shoddy premises because people had enough barriers to approaching an organisation or attending classes. It’s the stigma attached to it. From the outset, I wanted an appealing place to come to.”
A huge component of the distinctive vibe found at BrainTree is down to the café.
“The café is the drawcard. The whole principle of this centre is to encourage mental activity, stimulation and social contact, which is why the café is so important.”
The social contact factor isn’t just about the clients, it is also about their partners.
“While clients attend their classes, their spouses/partners can catch up in the café, and they feel connected and have a support network. Living with someone who has a neurological disorder can be challenging. It changes your relationship and it changes your outlook on life, because you don’t know what’s ahead.”
Simon and his wife, Tracey, are parents to 23-year-old Sam, and Simon feels his disability has made Sam more protective of him.
“Sam’s good about it, but I think he probably feels obliged to stay close to us. We don’t want him to feel restricted like that, but I think it’s something that’s almost unstoppable.”
On a personal level, while BrainTree keeps Simon mentally stimulated, he equally values his social life, such as the walking group he joined six years ago.
“Every Sunday we walk Mount Vernon, and every Wednesday we walk Sugar Loaf - top to bottom, rain or shine.”
Simon adds another golden rule for a contented life: “Wine at five is also important!”

Think fine wine, gourmet food, sparkling seas, convivial hosts, and an array of tempting tourism opportunities, and you’ll just scratch the surface of what’s on o er. Having lived in Marlborough for 25 plus years, I’m a huge fan.
Let’s start with the amazing scenery. Driving from Christchurch to Marlborough is a scenic adventure all of its own, passing through the coastal gem that is Kaikoura, the sparkling pink salt ponds at Lake Grassmere, and into the heart of wine country. From Ward and Seddon onwards, from the Awatere Valley to Blenheim, Picton, Renwick, and the flatlands of the Wairau Plains, there are grapes as far as the eye can see, and a wide variety of di erent wineries at which to sample the resultant wares.
Many have dining options, others are small boutique tasting rooms, so take your pick.
Marlborough is not just about wine, however.
Peel back the layers and you’ll discover any number of activities, and exciting events throughout the year that make it
worth a visit. Book festivals, art shows, its annual wine and food festival, an annual mussel festival, the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, and the iconic Garden Marlborough are all added attractions.
An extensive cycle trail winds through some of its most picturesque areas, and walking tracks vary from a stroll in the Wither Hills, to hiking the Queen Charlotte Track over several days. That brings us to the Marlborough Sounds, home to numerous upmarket lodges, family accommodations, and of course a multitude of water-based activities.
Boating, fishing, just cruising along and watching the wildlife all feature. From seals, to salmon farms, to shag colonies, the sparkling waters of Queen Charlotte, Pelorus, and Kenepuru Sounds are a tourism mecca, to be enjoyed by all ages.
By boat, plane or vehicle, the province’s diversity of landscapes, micro-areas, and opportunities are well worth exploring.

The Marlborough Sounds are an extensive network of sea-drowned valleys at the northern end of the South Island of New Zealand. The Marlborough Sounds were created by a combination of land subsidence and rising sea levels. According to Māori mythology, the sounds are the prows of the many sunken waka of Aoraki.

Te Puna o Waiwhetū is the group exhibition
Out of Time. Curated by Ken Hall, again reaching into the Gallery’s permanent collection he has given new life to many unexpected treasures. In addition, Hall also includes a series of works on paper of Indian birds from a private collection loan in a folio by artists, Elizabeth and Charles D’Oyly, dating to around 1826.
Their work captures something of the magic and exotic nature of species of birds that include the Great Rock Eagle, Pin-tailed Ducks, and Black and White Diver. The D’Oylys are represented by 23 paintings, their shared contribution to individual works demarcated with Elizabeth responsible for the birds, flowers and foliage, and Charles for the backgrounds.
The study and documentation of each of their subjects highlights the beautiful and complex realities of nature, and our wonder and accompanying detachment from it, Hall capturing something of this spirit in his accompanying essay, appropriately titling it Flitting, Gliding, Strutting, Cavorting.

From Godley Head to Little Port Cooper, stories of communities, pioneers and inventions have shaped the historic harbour of Whakaraupō Lyttelton. For this exhibition, members of Diamond Harbour Camera Club have spent the last year rediscovering views from past photographers of places of historic interest, seeking out locations, and where possible matching previous viewpoints. Their photographs are displayed alongside prints of the historic originals.
“The exhibition seeks to inform viewers of our rich heritage to be found all around Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour, highlighting our heritage and persuading others to explore our home here in Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour,” says Diamond Harbour Camera Club’s Glenda Cheesebrough. (The exhibition is part of the Christchurch Heritage Festival).

Celebrating Form Gallery’s 50th Anniversary in 2023, five female ceramic artists have come together to explore “Place” in a unique opportunity to see strong female voices with an exceptional level of playful skill, conceptually challenging the medium. The artists share their inspiration for location and space, exploring relationships between objects and place. Tatyanna Meharry, Jane McCulla, Holly Ramsey, Gwen Parsons, and Emma Turner take inspiration from the land, observing its history, traces left behind, local ecology and ever-shifting forces of time and nature.
Ramsey has created a sensitive response to the Bexley Wetlands with works
that are beautifully watery, layered and multidimensional. McCulla’s work provides new narratives on the concept of ancient petroglyphs, and through contemporary mark-making looks at the traces we leave behind. Meharry is inspired by endangered areas of local native fauna, bringing the ‘Peka Peka’ native long tailed bats plight to light with a broken black forest of these thumb-sized living treasures, while Gwen Parsons and Emma Turner are concerned with the physical and metaphysical nature of space and how we place ourselves inside it. McCulla, Meharry, Parsons, Ramsey, and Turner are all passionate clay teachers and Place is also an opportunity for students past and present to see what inspires the teachers.

Pennies from Heaven is the 3rd in a series of exhibitions from the estate of painter and printmaker, Eion Stevens (1952 - 1921). An exceptional artist, Stevens was an acute observer of human behaviour, insightful yet touching and frequently pointed and humorous in his response to his subjects. At the heart of his practice was a taken as given love for European Modernism, and André Derain always seeming a presence somewhere in his work. In 2023, Stevens’ presence and his legacy is again felt in selected paintings, the sale of which will support the new the city’s new socially supportive Youthline Central South Island. Following his exhibition Umbilical Brown VI in August 2021, Andy Leleisi’uao maintained a commitment to issues about ‘being brown in a white world’. In a new series of works, Inusual Migration he further reflects on and critiques many subjects, including the Samoan alphabet and loss of indigenous language. In a work like Inqucibus, he populates a grouping of figures, all sharing space with one another yet ironically and chillingly – together yet separate – a telling scattering of people distanced and removed from their original or ancestral homes.

Footage taken from Kāpara-Te-Hau (the salt lakes in Te Tau Ihu, near Te Waiharakeke Blenheim), Ana Iti has conceived an experience that is surprisingly telling. In its first person narrative, Iti unravels a touching idea and encounter that initially, seems incredulous on many levels. Yet, I am a salt lake gains traction and authority in its spoken-voice imagery of expansive skies, landscapes and light, its screened narrative seemingly taking the gallery visitor into the mind and heart of the natural world in a way that is magical, a reality that only a child might assume to be genuine. IMAGE: Ana Iti, I am a salt lake, research image, 2023.
This show exhibits not just what we like about the world but a little of what we don’t. The sculpture, All the pretty horses for example, references Cormac McCarthy’s Border Trilogy in which the beautiful is set against a background of human failure. Art for the most part these days, especially public art, engenders no discourse whatever nor does it attempt to express anything of a world increasingly divided in which conversation is discouraged and where di erences are redacted or cancelled.
If on leaving our exhibition you feel pleased to have come, but a little uneasy then this exhibition could be counted as something more than just decoration. These latest works are not so much focused on the bastards in our world, they are more a reaction to the current situation we are in where I feel quite unsure of all I thought I once knew; “ the entire basis of reality is being rewritten, there is nothing that can be agreed on, there is nothing that is sacred, there is nothing that is real, there is nothing that you can’t change.” - Paul Kingsnorth, English writer.
Alison Erickson: I’ve been sculpting and casting bronze for the past 24 years with Sam and our daughter Charlie. We wake each morning in the Old Flour Mill in Waikari to a chatter of birds amongst an expanding forest that we have planted together. Whether this unease is my age or the changing times I’m not sure. There are contradictions everywhere and it’s tempting to try to turn things to black or white in order to see the truth more clearly. When Sam teaches a painting class, he points out that there is always some reflected light within the shadow.
Jacob Needleman, the American philosopher says, “Always stay with the contradiction…. you’ll see there is always something more than two opposing truths, the whole truth always includes a third part which is the reconciliation.”
With this constant feeling of being caught o balance I have focused on relationships. I see them as architectural in one way and in another finally built delicate structures like fungal networks, hard to put back together again once disturbed.
Banksy: “Art’s job is to comfort the di urbed and di urb the comfortable.”

At Lushington’s Garden Centre, Miranda and her team have conjured up the guarantee of a backyard harvest to remember. Fruit is on the menu and that first taste of freshly picked, home-grown, can’t be beaten.
If space is limited, the team makes it possible with excellent advice and strong, productive plants. Espaliered Apple trees dress boundary fences beautifully with blossom and fruit or try their ‘Root-Control’ bags where you choose the tree size.
Creating a mini food forest is easy with their special range of dwarf fruit trees, then fill every other nook with a delectable mix of berry fruit, grapevines, citrus and all the other edibles that will have your fruit bowl and fridge bulging.
‘I don’t really have a garden as such’, you cry. They have that sorted too. “I recommend container gardening for all edibles and we ensure you buy the right tub, pot or ‘old boot’ for that little peach tree or parsley plant,” says Miranda, “just use the very best quality potting mix and slow-release fertiliser.”
O ering bountiful produce grown with your own hands is so satisfying, and with their help, can be so much fun.

With the season of fun and frolics only just begun, there’s no better way to celebrate spring than in a show-stopping dress.
Zebrano new season dresses flaunt vibrant colours, gorgeous patterns and sensational shapes.
Manager Michelle and her team of “style gurus” specialise in finding the right style and fit for customers by creating a well-balanced silhouette.
Using three common body types, (shown in photo) here are some easy tips to help find your perfect match:
Pear shape - add more shape and structure above the waist; the Senita dress (lemon tree) features pu sleeves that can be worn o shoulders.
Apple shape - avoid midri volume with a more structured fit; the apple-green Funnel dress (Deeanne Hobbs) has structured shoulders and tulip shaping.
Heart shape - fuller skirts, V-necks and wrap-style dresses look great; the Jayda dress (lemon tree) emphasises the waist, while its tiered skirt adds volume.
Zebrano garments are carefully curated for curvy bodies and are available in sizes 14+. “Just remember, the most important rule is there are no rules,” Michelle says.

You can find an array of exquisitely crafted pieces at Susan Forde Jewellery. From opulent oranges to lavish pinks, the gemstone selection is all about colour, making it hard to resist popping in this spring.
“I’ve always been drawn to colour as my inspiration. It adds to, celebrates, and accentuates the wearer in such transformative ways. This is why colour is such a big part of what I do and features so prominently in my jewellery,” says owner Susan.
Each internationally sourced precious and semi-precious stone has intrinsic meaning, and is carefully selected for its quality, colour, clarity, luminosity, sparkle, and unique character. This curation makes every piece of Susan Forde Jewellery special.
Also, of great importance to Susan is that everything her business does is ethical and eco-conscious. “I source all the stones from reliable and ethical channels in South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, and we manufacture here in New Zealand, and in the United Kingdom.”
Visit the store, located in The Welder to see the selection for yourself. You’ll find it at 22 Welles Street, Christchurch.

Characterised by painful fat accumulation, often in the lower body, this condition not only poses physical challenges but also takes an emotional toll on those living with it.
Lipoedema presents in di erent stages, also known as levels of progression. Those with an advanced stage of lipoedema, often have a “column leg” and cu ng above the ankles.
Lipoedema is associated with pain, easy bruising, and a mass of nodular fat.
While various treatment approaches have been explored, the e ectiveness of tumescent liposuction in managing lipoedema has gained significant attention and deserves recognition as a standard of care treatment.
Tumescent liposuction, traditionally associated with cosmetic procedures, has emerged as an important treatment for lipoedema. It o ers patients a renewed lease on life by addressing the pain, and enhancing mobility.
Unlike conventional weight loss methods that often prove futile due to the unique nature of lipoedema fat, liposuction’s targeted approach results in substantial and sustainable improvements. More than one treatment with liposuction may be needed to help relieve symptoms and improve the condition long term. Please contact KM Surgical on 03 377 1010 for more information, or if you would like to book a consultation with Dr Ken Macdonald (pictured right).
Lipoedema is a chronic and often misunderstood disorder of fatty tissue seen mainly in women.
Food scientist, clinical nutritionist and health researcher, Dr Vincent Candrawinata says that aside from amazing health benefits, apples, which are rich in phenolics such as flavonoids, may help lower the risk of Alzheimer’s.
Flavonoids are phenolic compounds that can be found in many plant products, including apples and other fruits and vegetables. They have strong antioxidant properties that may lower your risk of a heart attack or a stroke,” Dr Vincent explains. They work by regulating cellular activity in the body and fighting o free radicals that can cause oxidative stress on your body. As an antioxidant agent, they also help the body fight o potentially harmful molecules in the body.”
Dr Vincent says new research linking apples to lowered risk of Alzheimer’s disease include nutritional researchers in the US recently discovering a link between the consumption of flavonoid-rich foods such as berries and apples and the lowered likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease and another forms of dementia. They studied 2800 participants, aged 50 plus, discovering those who consumed lower amounts of flavonoid-rich foods were two to four times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and related dementias over a 20-year span.
They also found that the antioxidants in flavonoids, including in apples and pears, kale and spinach, and chocolate and wine, when absorbed properly are beneficial to our health. Their antioxidant traits avert the damage that results from cellular oxidisation. Studies have shown that higher dietary intakes of flavonoids and their subclass of flavonols might be associated with reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Besides benefitting the brain, flavonoid consumption has also been linked to improved heart health.
Dr Vincent says eating fresh apples daily may protect the brain’s neuron cells against oxidative stress-induced neurotoxicity, which occurs when the body’s nervous system is exposed to natural or manmade toxic substances and alters the normal activity of the nervous system. Eventually this could lead to disrupting or killing brain neurons. Neurotoxicity can occur because of exposure to substances used in chemotherapy, radiation treatment, drug therapies or even exposure to heavy metals like mercury and certain food additives, pesticides, industrial and cleaning solvents and cosmetics.

Most people tend to think that it’s what happens in their day that exhausts them, and this can be true. Yet, a lack of energy can be a signal from our body that something needs to change. It could be an indication of low iron status, a lack of muscle mass, the consequence of sitting for too many hours a day or even something as simple as dehydration or not leaving enough space in the day for the things that bring you joy.
Too many people chalk a lack of energy up to getting old or an overly full schedule, yet there are plenty of 60+ year olds and highly busy people who have an abundance of energy, so it’s not true that these things are inherently energy draining. Low energy or persistent fatigue is your body trying to communicate with you – o ering you feedback. The symptoms themselves don’t have a voice to let us know what they want us to do. It is up to us to decipher them. Having yearly blood tests with your GP can help to rule out more serious conditions that might be involved in poor energy, such as hypothyroidism. It’s also good to consider that when we do tasks out of duty it depletes us, whereas when we do things from a place of genuine care, it energises us.
Energy tends to be one of those aspects of our wellbeing that takes time to rebuild once it has been depleted so it won’t always respond to ‘fast fixes’. That said, it really depends on what is driving the energy slump. If it’s a tendency towards sedentariness, going for a gentle 15min walk can be helpful – include some hills or stairs for a little resistance muscle building. Restorative practices like meditation, breathwork or even a quick nap if it’s possible can help if the energy drain is from always being on the go – although we quite often resist resting when we are busy bees. And of course, amping up your nourishment with loads of leafy greens – a greens powder or a green smoothie can be an e ective pick me up.

Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the number one cause of death in New Zealand, with one in 20 adults diagnosed. Cardiovascular disease is predominantly a ‘lifestyle disease’, which means that many heart conditions are preventable, or manageable, with early detection and timely intervention.
At Cashel Pharmacy, we use a PWA test to determine your risk factors for heart disease.
The information from the PWA will inform CardiAction, an innovative heart screening and intervention management app that empowers you to take control of your heart and artery health. Developed by a team of top-notch cardiologists and technology experts, this cutting-edge app revolutionises how we approach heart care.
The app provides personalised recommendations based on your screening results, o ering tailored interventions to address potential risks or concerns with lifestyle, nutrition, excercise, and supplement guidence.
Book through our website. After your PWA test, which takes about 30 minutes, our friendly screener will explain your results and assess your potential risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as show you how to use CardiAction to improve your heart and artery health—all with personalised recommendations.

For the caramel sauce
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup half and half (half milk & half cream)
Pinch salt
2 Tbs butter
For the latté
2 cups brewed co ee
1/2 cup half and half
Ice
To make the caramel sauce, combine brown sugar, half and half, and salt in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the butter and stir with a whisk until it reaches a boil. Keep stirring and allow to keep cooking until it thickens, about 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and cover to keep the caramel warm for drizzling in the co ee. Pour the remaining caramel into an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Fill 2 glasses with ice, then pour the co ee over. Add half and half, then drizzle caramel sauce over top. Drink.
It is that vibe which you will find at Brighton Beach House, run by Donna and Scot Toon.
Donna explains “the concept of ‘local’ is very important to us.
We are local ourselves. I grew up in New Brighton. It’s also about buying local, employing local and giving back to the local community organisations wherever we can.” This philosophy is evident in their local wine and gin lists. The Micro Greens are grown in South Brighton, the beers on tap are from local brewery Two Thumbs, and their house vodka is by local Christchurch distillery Heresto.
Donna and Scot may be local, but they bring to the Beach House years of hospitality experience of working overseas. “This café is a dream for us that has been cooking for years. We provide Kiwi favourites, such as eggs Bene, but we have also introduced some Asian flavours to tempt our customers to try new dishes. There is a Thai curry and pork and coriander dumplings, as well as Korean chicken bites and poke bowls, which change seasonally.”
Brighton Beach House has spacious indoor and outdoor dining areas, and is an excellent venue for functions. They also have a monthly quiz with Donna herself as the quiz master. A truly great “local”.

This is certainly the case for PJ Gemmell, owner of Fisherman’s Wharf restaurant in Lyttleton. “We have a great team here, says PJ,” “from all the sta in the kitchen to the front-of-house sta serving the customers.” Central to this business is head chef Kelly Te Mete. “Kelly has been in the industry for 17 years in Canterbury. She is very well-respected and recognised for her flair and magic touch with the fresh and seasonal ingredients that we source, especially the seafood. She has been with us at Fisherman’s Wharf for four years and her creativity with all our dishes, from entrees through to desserts, is a joy to see. She really knows food to perfection and brings out the best in all the others in her kitchen team.”
Superb food alone however, does not make a successful restaurant. Attentive, friendly service is also essential. “Our restaurant manager Grace Clark has been with us for six years. She was very young for the role when she started, but she quickly proved she has amazing people skills. I have no hesitation in saying she is the best restaurant manager I have worked with.”
Add into the mix with the food and the service, the atmosphere, ambiance and location of Fisherman’s Wharf and all-in-all it is a winning combination. fishermanswharf.nz

You might also say “give me an architectural new build or renovation, and make it e cient, beautifully finished, with many of the materials and trades needed available in-house, and easy for me.”
Ok, it isn’t as catchy or amusing, but it is actually far more achievable if you build with DGI Morgan. “We are founded on great customer service,” says company owner David Morgan, “we listen and make the client’s priorities our priorities. Our own goal is always excellent work at competitive prices.”
David ensures he is available to talk on the day you call, and will arrange a meeting within the week “Stage one is to discuss your ideas, and then we pull the vision together. We will make sure we are a good fit for each other, but we are confident we will be,” says David.
It’s di cult to calculate the ease and productivity that having sister companies bring to every DGI Morgan project. Morgan Glass and Glazing, and DGI Morgan Ltd Steel and Fabrication, partner with DGI Morgan Ltd to complete residential and architectural new builds, alterations and renovations, design and planning, project management, commercial construction and maintenance, highend interior fitouts, custom timber joinery and insurance work.
David loves what he does because he is passionate about the quality of products delivered and the satisfaction of the client.
“I take huge pride in every job, whether it’s building a large architectural home or a smaller renovation.”
A current project is a new build at Ashley Forest. “The home is a compact loft style, and intended for retirement living,” says David, “we are enjoying making and installing the macrocarpa trusses and roof structures. It’s going to be another stunning outcome for the client and our team.”
A favourite childhood chestnut goes, “give me a crocodile sandwich and make it snappy”.
at D.G.I. Morgan Ltd we offer competitive pricing and deliver incredible results on schedule. We also aim to exceed our client’s expectations, every time.
A central hub, like a smart speaker or controller, is the heart of your smart home system. It connects and manages all your smart devices, making it easy to control them from one place.
Illuminate
Upgrade your lighting with smart bulbs and fixtures. These allow you to adjust brightness and colour from your smartphone or even set schedules to match your daily routine.
Thermostat precision
A smart thermostat not only helps you save on energy bills, it also ensures your home is always at the perfect temperature. Adjust it remotely or let it learn your preferences for optimal comfort.
Enhanced security
Install smart locks, cameras, and doorbells, for added security. Receive alerts on your phone and even grant access to visitors remotely, providing peace of mind wherever you are.
Kitchen convenience
Smart appliances, such as ovens and co ee makers, can simplify meal preparation. Start your co ee brewing before getting out of bed or preheat the oven on your way home from work.
By using these smart home technologies in your living space, you can make daily tasks more e cient and create a more comfortable environment for yourself and your family. Embrace the future with the benefits of a truly smart home.
In this digital age, it’s easier than ever to transform your home into a smart, efficient living space. By embracing the latest in home automation, you can make your daily life more convenient and enjoyable.
Just as your wardrobe undergoes a transition towards cheerful, sunny colours during this season, your bedding should follow suit.
Enter the coverlet, the secret weapon in the realm of lightweight summer bedding. This versatile bedding layer strikes the balance between the snug embrace of a quilt and the need for a refreshing night’s sleep. Pair your coverlet with sheet sets made from fabrics like linen or bamboo. This combination ensures that you remain cool, comfortable, and blissfully free from night sweats. The beauty of the coverlet lies in its year-round functionality, doubling as an elegant extra layer during the winter months.
To elevate your sleeping experience even further, think
about adding a gel-filled cooling mat to your pillow. This slim, ingenious mat harbours the same squishy gel that you find in reusable ice packs and fits seamlessly atop a standard pillow. You’ll hardly feel it. For an additional touch, chill the mat in the fridge or freezer just before bedtime.
Alternatively, use what you’ll likely already have, a hot water bottle. Instead of filling it with hot water, fill it with chilled water and put in your bed to keep your feet or the back of your knees cool.
An extra tip is to make sure your curtains are drawn during the day, especially if you have windows near your bed, so it doesn’t heat it up too much for sleep time.
By using these tips, you’ll have better sleep, even during the warmest of months.
It’s time to stow away the electric blanket and fold up those cosy flannel sheets, we’re heading towards warmer nights.
The judges of the Registered Master Builder House of the Year competition knew they had discovered the magic formula in this Lincoln new build (pictured). They handed it their Gold Award in the New Home under $500,000 category for the regional round of the competition.
Created by family-owned company Fortified Homes, the welcoming entrance is framed by an Eldorado stone-clad gabled porch. The main living area is filled with natural light. Flow to the kitchen and dining area continues with bifold doors leading to the alfresco dining and barbeque area. A large sliding barn-style door leads you to the second living area, where the log
fire with tiled hearth and stone-clad mantel invites curling up on the couch. As well as hosting a spacious walk-in robe and ensuite, the main bedroom features sliding doors to the covered spa area.
“My favourite thing about the house is the kitchen and alfresco area, it is an entertainers house, and works well for the owners,” says company owner Mike Kidd. The clients had a hard deadline pre-Christmas to move into the house which presented some challenges, with it being the silly season for everyone, “but we pulled it all together with materials and subtrades, and still achieved a perfect finish,” says Mike.
With more than 50 years of building experience within the team, Mike himself
comes from a background in carpentry, completing his apprenticeship with his father. “I established Fortified Homes with the idea of providing local families with quality homes at a ordable prices,” says Mike.
Mike particularly loves the first stage with clients, planning and getting to know their rough ideas. “We then move through finalising plans, building and handover. Actually, I love the entire process, it is about making the client’s visions come alive.”

Your happy place found, and held close to your heart. That is the alpha and the omega of the perfect family home.
the cooking and dining spaces. This is especially handy when hosting dinner, so the primary cooking area isn’t interrupted by guests, or family.
Many homes, particularly smaller residences, and where there are young children, have “eat-in” kitchens, often incorporating a small dining table, or using a bench top, or island for casual meals and less formal dining. The benches, islands and tables may also be used for other purposes, such as a food preparation area, or for children doing their homework.
Some kitchens feature countertops of di erent heights, with the higher one typically used for bar-style dining. An eat-in kitchen has its advantages. Taking food from cooktop to countertop can be accomplished in a single motion. It also makes it easier to clean up after a meal, since there is little distance from the countertop to the kitchen sink.
Having a separate kitchen and dining room has its pros and cons. On one hand, it helps the home cook focus on their tasks, and the clear delineation between the two spaces allows parents to keep children out of the kitchen and avoid accidents.
Eating in a dedicated dining room keeps the impending kitchen clean-up out of sight, yet some people find working alone in the kitchen too lonely, especially when something is happening in the next room.
Adining area doesn’t have to be a separate room. One end of the kitchen will su ce, although there are numerous benefits to having a dining room. Siting your dining table separate to the main kitchen allows for clear division between

There’s no right or wrong, and there is a third increasingly popular option which is open plan kitchen/dining. Often this can be achieved by removing the interior walls separating common areas, such as the living room, dining room and kitchen.
An open floor plan o ers many benefits, including better natural lighting and improved tra c flow, and it lets you have an eat-in kitchen and a dining room.
The kitchen may be the heart of a home, yet it is often the dining area that boosts its conviviality to the next level.
That’s the way it is with the gorgeous cabins designed and built by Loburn Sawmill. They can be a guest room, a self-contained flat, a workshop, a studio, an o ce, or any type of shed you could possibly need, wherever you need it to be. You might be dreaming of a holiday pad but building costs are too much.
“Our range of cabins have been so successful,” says Jess Marketing Manager at Loburn Sawmill, “they’ve sold like hot cakes and clients told us they wanted them even bigger and with bathroom facilities.” To meet demand the team have designed two larger sized cabins. Now added to the original range are the 4.2m x 2.6m, and the 5.8m x 2.6m cabins. The new ensuite option comes with a vanity, shower, toilet, and a cavity slider to keep it all private.
Sustainably sourced New Zealand larch clads each cabin making it a sleek addition to an urban setting, or a perfect blend with a countryside or bush setting. The cabins are really strong, and also really portable.
A look at the team’s website shows just how versatile the cabins are. One or more cabins can site together. Arrange with decking to connect the cabins, and you have an almost instant, very attractive, and cost-e ective bach set up. They make decking choices too. In small, medium, and large, they add to the versatility of the cabin range. You can link them up in configurations that suit you or your site.
The highly regarded and preferred Douglas Fir timber is used in framing the cabins. Ship-lap weatherboards are joined by black Colour Steel 5 rib roof iron and double-glazed black aluminium joinery in the window and sliding door. Wool insulation in the walls and ceiling assists with energy e ciency, and the floor is self-insulated 45mm T&G. The interior walls are clad in solid timber T.G&V wall panelling and fitted with two double power points and two internal LED lights. Outside you will find two external LED lights and a caravan plug.
“Come and see our cabins,” says Jess, “the design is excellent, they are made with quality materials with a low carbon footprint, and are packed with character and good looks too.”
Sometimes you see a product and you just want it. Actually, make that need it. Attractive, useful, practical, economical, versatile, and the cosy and sustainable embrace of timber.

Start by taming the kitchen beast, your garbage disposal. Pour a cup of vinegar and some baking soda down the drain, followed by hot water. It banishes nasty odours and leaves your kitchen as fresh as a spring day.
Give your carpets and rugs a fragrant boost. Sprinkle baking soda generously, let it sit for a bit, then vacuum it up. Your floors will emit a subtle, garden-like scent.
Combat bad smells at the source. Place a small bowl of baking soda at the bottom of your trash can. It works wonders at keeping things smelling clean.
Channel your inner potion master by simmering a pot of water with herbs and fruit slices. Think lavender, rosemary, and lemon for a touch of sophistication.
Light up your space with fragrant candles. Choose your favourite scents, from Vanilla Bean to Fresh Linen, and you’ll want to light them all the time.
With these tips, your home will become an aromatic haven, leaving a lasting impression on all who step inside.
Let’s dive into simple and effective tips to turn your home into a fragrant haven.
Over four years of running her Akaroa market stall, Narielle A’Court heard countless tales of tourists buying supposedly “New Zealand-made” items from gift shops, only to discover they were not genuine.

With out spoiling too much, the real star was an electric converted Fiat 500 which Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell use to evade the villains through the streets of Rome. Quite comically too in parts as it happens.
It’s amazing how much kudos a film or television series can give a particular car. So much so that it sometimes completely changes the fortunes and following of a brand. Take Aston Martin for example. What if James Bond producers Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman weren’t able to secure a DB5 for Sean
Connery to drive in Goldfinger? Maybe the most famous car in the world would end up being a Jaguar or Jensen?
Then you have the Delorean DMC-12. Would this still have the same cult following without Back to the Future?
What about the Ford Gran Torino in Starsky and Hutch, Pontiac Trans Am in Knight Rider and AMC Pacer in Wayne’s World? Three ordinary cars which, thanks to the magic of celluloid, have become incredibly sought after today. Well, maybe not that last one.
Either way, give a car some big or small screen time and you create legends.
The Pathfinder is a name we haven’t seen for some time amongst the Nissan lineup, so has it been worth the wait?
From the get-go, it’s obvious the new Pathfinder has, well, found a new path, in terms of looks. It’s a polished looking SUV from every angle, and its not hard to see inspiration from the likes of the Land Rover Discovery, especially from the rear three quarter. I love the full width large font on the boot spelling out ‘Pathfinder.’ Nice touch.
The range comes in two spec levels, the Ti and the Ti-L, the latter of which was my test car. The Ti will set you back $83,490 and the Ti-L $88,490. Under the bonnet, both models get the same 3.5L V6 petrol engine mated to a new 9-speed automatic gearbox. The latter replaces the previous Pathfinder’s old CVT system. Power is sent to all four wheels and rated at 202kW/340Nm of torque.
Inside the cabin has been given an overhaul in line with the current Nissan Qashqai. All the switchgear feels solid and well put together and there is plenty of space front and rear.
The Pathfinder comes standard with Intelligent 4X4 with seven all-terrain modes, heated front seats, a 9.0” touchscreen infotainment system, a 13-speaker BOSE stereo system which happens to be one of the best in this class, wireless Apple CarPlay/
Android Auto, wireless charging. LED head and taillights, adaptive cruise control and a whole host of active safety features.
My Ti-L gets additional goodies like an electric panoramic sunroof, 20-inch alloys, intelligent rear-view mirror which gives a camera view of your rear visibility and a 12.3-inch TFT digital instrument cluster to name a few. It’s also a full seven-seater and the second row can be tilted and moved back and forth for the full captain’s chair experience.
Wind out the Pathfinder for the first time and masses of smooth torque which come into play. Simply flex your big toe and that bonnet rises, allowing you to surge forward. It’s also a quiet unit. In fact, its probably one of the most refined feeling petrol V6s out there.
The ride is supple, and the bumps are dealt with easily. You can also play with the multiple o -road modes when roughing it, and the Pathfinder takes it all in its stride. It does feel heavy at a snip over two tonnes, but it manages to also feel planted and stable in all conditions.
I was actually rather impressed with Nissan’s new Pathfinder. While that price tag makes it one of the costlier options in this class and it doesn’t mind a drink, there is plenty to like here and those after a premium feeling SUV with a tonne of grunt should give it a look.

It’s hard to imagine the Canterbury Motorcycle scene without Casbolts Motorcycles.
Established in 1932, Casbolts have catered for and inspired riders of all ages for generations. The roots of Casbolts a nity with two wheels go back as far as the late 1800s where the Casbolts family had a booming bicycle business. Ninety years later, having become one of New Zealand’s leading motorcycle dealerships for many brands over the decades, Casbolts is the Christchurch home for Honda and the South Island home for Ducati. Honda has been part of the stable since 1962. Countless CB750s, Cubs, Fireblades and other iconic Honda bikes have left the Casbolts showroom over the years. This legacy continues with the latest CBs, CBRs, Cubs, and CRFs to name a few.
The same can be said for Ducati. Casbolts has the classic Italian L-twin engine soundtrack coarsing through their veins, with everything including the Scrambler, Supersport and Multistrada available.
Along with a comprehensive selection of bike accessories and riding gear, including probably the best selection of Shoei helmets in Christchurch, Casbolts very much is a one-stop-shop.
You don’t have to be a die-hard Honda for Ducati fan, but loving your bike is reason enough to swing by.
The look on the face of the driver next to me at the lights was priceless. My moped was able to out-accelerate him off the mark, and silently zoom up to the speed limit of 50km/h says reviewer Ben Selby.
This is just one of the cool features of the newest local o ering to electric urban mobility, the Voltrix Flii 3 e-moped. With a 72v 40Ah lithium-ion battery sending charge though a 3000w electric motor, the Voltrix gives 80km of range on a single charge. A full charge from flat can also be achieved between five or six hours from a conventional three-point plug.
Taking elements from the likes of Italian scooters and even a snippet of 50s Americana, the Voltrix certainly has street cred. A single digital instrument cluster houses your speed, battery life and what gear you are in. You can ride the Voltrix in first or second gear, with the first limiting the top speed to 30km/h, while the latter allows for the full 50km/h top speed. You even have reverse assist.
I found myself slicing through urban tra c with ease, grinning from ear to ear. The Voltrix Flii 3 e-moped really does get under your skin. It’s fun too. Get in touch with Grant and the team at Voltrix to book a test ride. You’ll be amazed. voltrix.co

One can’t a ord to be left behind, even when it comes to commercial vehicles. Peugeot know this, which is why their popular Partner van has been given an electric boost. Enter the e-Partner, one of the most car-like vans around.
The range consists of two models, the standard and long. Prices start at $74,990 plus ORC.
Throw in the full Government clean car rebate of $7015 and this Partner is well priced. The Long will set you back $77,990 but you still get that full rebate.
Underneath sits a 50kWh battery pack which sends 100kW of power to the front wheels. You also get a torque boost of up to 260Nm in Power mode, but more on that in a bit.
With a claimed 245km of range, you will be able to completely recharge from a standard 7.4kW wall box charger in seven hours. Plus, if you use a 100kW fast charger, you will have up to 80% charge in just 30 minutes.
The Long featured here is slightly longer, hence the name. With a payload of 751kg, there are plenty of nooks and crannies to store everything from bits of four by two timber, which can be stored snuggly with the passenger multiflex seat featured on the Long version folded away, giving 3.44m of space.
Inside you sit upright with a clear view of your surroundings, though not for the rear, but you do have a very clear and concise reversing camera to aid in backing up. Talking of tech, the e-Partner features Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, blind spot monitoring, active emergency braking, lane departure warning, six airbags and USB charging. The small steering wheel fits snuggly in your mitts and the raised instrument cluster sits atop the dash, displaying nice looking analogue dials.
What amazes me most about the e-Partner is how it feels on the move. While some vans tend to buck around a bit, this one, probably down to the extra weight of the batteries, stays quite planted. Its handling dynamics are also well worth mentioning as that feeling of keeping planted extends to the corners too.
There are three drive modes to choose from, Eco, Normal and Power. The latter is the most impressive. It allows you to saunter along at a decent rate while giving you the extra torque required to haul those heavy loads.
The e-Partner feels more like a car than a van. In fact, if your work or lifestyle desires practicality but you don’t want to part with the sensation of driving something more mainstream and desire the silent running economy of EV motoring, then you would be hard pressed to overlook the e-Partner.
