Choosing an When it comes to selling your home, take the time to choose a qualified and knowledgeable sales consultant who has the right tools and strategies at their disposal. This decision will define your selling experience, and can have a substantial impact on the final result. Here are three things to consider when making your decision as well as the top five questions to ask when interviewing real estate agents.

Licensed Agent REAA 2008

1. RESEARCH

Agent

Prior to meeting the agent we recommend doing a bit of friendly online investigation. Check their website, online profiles and client testimonials to get an overall impression of who they are.

2. RAPPORT Your agent needs to be on the same page when it comes to knowledge in your area and expectations. It is also crucial you have mutual trust and strong lines of communication.

Q1. How long have you been in the industry? Q2. What properties have you sold recently in the area? Q3. What process should I use to sell my home? Q4. How do you typically handle pricing negotiations between your buyers and sellers? Q5. What happens if my property doesn’t sell in the first four weeks?

3. SUPPORT You’re actually choosing an entire agency to work on your behalf with your agent taking the lead. Investigate how the company is set up, what areas they sell in, what support the agent will have and how they work as a team.

packed full of people, places and present ideas; everything essential for your wedding. Whether you’re planning your wedding, that of a son, daughter or friend, attending as a guest, or simply daydreaming of a Prince Charming, we hope you’ll gain inspiration from the following pages. No two weddings are ever the same, but the commitment two people share when exchanging vows is heartfelt. “Where there is love there is life,” said Mahatma Gandhi, and all these decades later it still rings true. The last couple of years have proven problematic for some couples wanting to tie the knot, but many have found

creative ways to walk down the aisle and share their nuptials. Compromise has been the order of the day for frequent marriages of late and it’s a good way to start. Relationships, especially marriages, are usually built on compromise, mutual respect and faith in each other’s abilities to handle situations that arise. Or, as my husband and I do, agree to disagree from time to time. Weddings are not just for the bride, groom, families and guests. Many businesses help to create those special days, and in this issue we showcase some of them. Marriage is all about love, and we love supporting local just as you do. Read on and enjoy.

detail AN EYE FOR

With over 20 years of working closely with brides, Lisa Dermott has plenty of experience when it comes to the beautiful gowns that are often the star of wedding day celebrations. Metropol’s Georgia Summerton chats to her about what she has learnt during her career in the bridal industry, and what success comes down to.

I

t has always been bridal for Lisa, who found her passion for sewing at school. “After school, I went straight into an apprenticeship, and really learnt from the ground up.” After working in a few different bridal businesses, she went on to open her own business in 1997, and Brides of Merivale was born. In what was a predominantly ‘made to measure’ industry at the time, Lisa gravitated towards more contemporary style gowns which weren’t so available. “I wanted to bring more upmarket brands into New Zealand, and more modern and contemporary styles.” This was a game-changer for local brides, to finally have access to a selection of beautiful international gowns at their fingertips here in Christchurch. While there is a lot to love about being such a big part of so many special days, Lisa says it is the constant variety that comes with the work that she enjoys most. “Every client is different, even if they have the same dress. We encourage our clients to personalise their dresses

and really bring out their personalities. If we can’t order the changes then we can do them in store. We are a small team of four, and our team is highly trained and can do everything, sew, sell and sketch. We work with our clients completely, if we sell them the dress then we are with them the whole way.” Lisa says most brides come in with a few ideas of what they want, but often it’s not what they end up getting. “Many come in with ideas, but don’t know if it’s going to suit them. More often than not they change to a different look. We are there to guide them, helping them understand what might be possible, even if they never thought it would be.” The wedding industry is obviously one that has had it tough the past few years, battling the restrictions from lockdowns and alert levels. “We have become a team of part-time councillors! It’s been tough, and we feel for the clients and what they are going through.” One amazing story to come out of Covid-19 was a client who picked up her dress the

one on one day after lockdown ended. The team worked their magic through lockdown and managed to get her dress ready for the wedding remotely, talk about unprecedented times. Operating for over 20 years in Christchurch is no small feat and not something many businesses could celebrate. Lisa says the secret is in the genuine love and care that the she has for clients, and always working with their best interests first. “I honestly think it’s actually because we care about our clients. If a bride was humming and harming about a gown, and we genuinely thought it was a better fit for her then we would encourage her to go with it. A brides happiness is everything to making her day special.” The bridal gown industry has grown incredibly since Lisa has been in the game, with now an incredible range of international brands available to choose from. “We research our brands carefully,

and only use reputable ones. We have let go of brands in the past that we didn’t feel were properly supporting the brides.” Every style in-store is handpicked, and of course, Lisa has a few of her favourites. Made with Love, Wendy Makin, Kelly Lin Couture and Miss Chloe are all in the line-up. While ready to wear gowns are a wonderful option for brides, since lockdown there has actually been an increase in made to measure dresses, Lisa says. “Since the first lockdown, we have noticed a big increase in made to measure trends. It’s great because we can take them on that journey and guide them along creating the perfect gown to order in store.” This is also a way brides are supporting local businesses and keeping their business in New Zealand, which is great to see after the last few years of tough times.

Lisa’s advice for brides: Start looking for your dress about a year out. Depending on where the dress comes from, and the detailing, they can take anything from 14 weeks to 6 months to arrive. You want time to try the gown on, and not feel rushed to make the final decision. You also want to ensure your gown will arrive in plenty of time.”

Self-taught sustainable jewellery artist Julia Banks has always been creative.

enjoy exploring the beauty of everyday objects and my surroundings.” When she found herself some land in the rural countryside of Greendale, her eye for design saw it transformed it into a brand new heritage-style home and 2.5 acres of landscaped garden and this is where she now has her home workshop. Her love for the beauty that can be found in natural forms caused her to “stumble” into the handmade jewellery business. “I was a contemporary painter before this and it was only after having children that I found spare time was a precious commodity.” After a trip to the Little River Gallery where she saw the alluring jewellery of other artists on display she began to explore turning vintage objects from her own home into pieces of wearable art. “I’ve never really looked back since that day.” Inspired by “beautiful organic forms, plants, nature, and architecture,” and often featuring florals there is a softness

to her work. The textured Sterling Silver of a pair of flower earrings look like, if touched, their delicate shimmering petals would curl in your fingers just like that of a real flower. Banks says that walking around old buildings and noticing their architectural quirks or the way the sun bounces off angles to juxtapose light and dark helps her begin the journey of creating a piece. “I have a journal that I’m always jotting down ideas in.” She describes each piece as “made with its own story.” Bothered by the fact that it often felt like she lived in a “throw-away” society, Banks wanted to do everything she could to make her designs eco-friendly. “I try to use alternatives to chemicals and because I make everything from start to finish, I know every piece is created the way I would want to purchase it.” Since starting her journey by exploring videos and books, Banks is now a member of the Silversmiths Guild of Canterbury and is looking to expand her workshop.

he new exhibition ‘Paper, Creature, Stone’ also includes ceramic works, figurative sculptures and watercolours – all new pieces from Upritchard that will be on display from Saturday 2 April at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. “It’s exciting to be sharing brand new work by one of Aotearoa’s most prominent contemporary artists,” says curator Felicity Milburn. “As well as the curiously elongated – and captivatingly human – balata figures, it’s a rare chance to see a wide spectrum of her current practice. Also on display will be a strange array of carefully posed figures, hand-modelled from polymer clay and outfitted in clothing and jewellery made by collaborators from around the country. Ceramic vases and bowls, thrown by Taranaki potter Nicholas Brandon and glazed by Upritchard with unexpected designs, give a sense of mystery to these age-old forms.” The pieces in ‘Paper, Creature, Stone’ incorporate the work and expertise of a range of craftspeople from around New Zealand, including, potter Nicholas Brandon, fashion designer Steven Junil Park and jeweller Karl Fritsch. The creation of the exhibition reflects this particular, peculiar moment in human history, when working together is both harder and more essential than ever. Collaboration made this exhibition possible – and, for Francis, more fun than working alone,” says Milburn. ‘Paper, Creature, Stone’ runs from 2 April to 24 July.

Open finance benefits Open finance is tipped to become the standard for consumers’ financial welfare and empowerment, according to a new Aotearoa fintech research report.

F

inTechNZ executive director Jason Roberts says the huge opportunities for Kiwi businesses and consumers can’t be ignored; with open finance set to increase competition and innovation across many sectors. “Emerging fintech such as open finance is redefining the way we borrow, lend, save, spend, store and transfer money. Disruptive technologies are revolutionising traditional financial services, creating new services for consumers and opportunities for start-ups,” he adds.

INVESTMENTS

The report says there is a low level of awareness and understanding in New Zealand about open finance and the benefits it offers, and this needs to be improved. It suggests that improvements in the connectivity of financial systems, computing power and data collection offer an opportunity to overcome New Zealand’s tyranny of distance and manoeuvre closer to the centre of the emerging framework of digital trade and finance.

AND

In Brief FinTechNZ is a not-for-profit that brings together New Zealand financial service providers, tech innovators, investor groups, government regulators and financial educators. Open finance means individuals and businesses will be able to access and use any financial data supplied by them or created on their behalf by their provider, be that a bank, insurance company, utility or any firm that holds their financial transaction data.

Keeping cryptocurrency safe Over 16 billion (NZD) worth of cryptocurrency was stolen between 2011 and late 2019. It generally boiled down to one vital thing, private keys. Anyone can access a wallet’s coins if they have the private key. The best idea is to store crypto in a wallet where you’re in control of the private keys, not a third party.

T

he second essential is creating a backup of your wallet in case something happens to your device or software. When creating your backup phrase, write it on two separate pieces of paper or buy a special card such as Cryptosteel or a Safewords kit. “Never store your backups as a computer file, and don’t keep a photo on your phone; it’s not secure enough,” says BitPrime’s Victoria Hoete-Dodd.

Sea-level swimwear

Monday to Sunday edge

With life returning to normal (albeit a new normal), the urge to get away for time out and retail therapy adventures is hard to ignore.

H

anmer Springs never fails to please. It is a shopper’s paradise – the place to source that something special. Lifestyles is one such store. Its quality casualwear takes urban chic to a whole new level. This apparel is zingy and fresh; All About Eve

it’s savvy streetwise with classy attitude. Being a dual merchandise boutique means that not only does Mum get to take home a sexy pair of jeans, but Dad gets to take home a pretty cool pair as well. Labels such as Levi, Billabong, All About Eve, Superdry and T&C give an idea of how there’s something here for everyone, including hardto-please teens and fashionconscious tweens. Add in a wide swimwear range, from children to adults, casual shoe brands, such as Woden, Kustom and Holsters, plus everything from backpacks to beanies and you get why paradise starts here. Owner Alice Stielow confides the latest footwear trend instore – crocs. “Yes, they’ll be back for summer, but much edgier than before. Everyone will want a pair.” Lifestyles, Alpine Pacific Centre, Hanmer Springs. Call 03 315 7126. www.facebook.com/LifeStylesHanmer

Settle for a while The country is opening up again to international tourists and Hanmer Springs is a drawcard for visitors and locals alike.

T

he thermal resort town is a gem in the tourism crown and launched its inaugural Alpine Winter Festival in 2021. The event is on again this year, from 1-31 July. Local moteliers Sue and Brett Senior, of the Settlers Boutique Motel, describe the event as “spectacular”. “It’s one-of-a-kind,” says Sue. “It’s great fun and really shouldn’t be missed, and what better way to enjoy it than tying it in with a stay at Settlers!” Brett’s aviation career was grounded with the advent of Covid-19 and the couple decided on Hanmer to realise

their business dream. The seasoned travelers had lived in the Middle East for most of their married lives and say that some of the most memorable places they stayed were small and boutique in style. “We loved the individuality and uniqueness of this type of accommodation’’ says Brett. “We don’t want to just give a room key to our guests, we want to welcome them.” For that warm welcome, book direct with Sue and Brett at the Settlers Boutique Motel. A dash of Danish Why is it that a piece of jewellery, a handbag or garment with a European label always gives us that tingle of excitement?

N

o doubt it’s because we associate anything from Europe to be of superior craftmanship, built from centuries of artisan knowledge and skills passed from generation to generation. Kjole Style lauds the European influence, and its recent move to a more spacious site has allowed for a greater selection of the leading Danish labels this clothing boutique is renowned for. Labels such as the gorgeous Copenhagen-based lollys laundry, a brand that presents understated luxury in beautiful and affordable apparel, including basics, colourful knits and feminine prints.

Sizes instore range from six to 24, so every woman can find something they love. Colours for autumn/winter see tans, creams and blues in prominence, and animal prints still reign king of the jungle. Casual chic never goes out of style in Dranella or My Essential Wardrobe jeans. Many of the Danish labels have the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) standard. Better Cotton, the world’s largest cotton sustainability programme, helps cotton communities survive and thrive, while protecting and restoring the environment. hile formal attire is often the common dress code for weddings and other special occasions, there are varying levels of formality that the hosts can decide on for their special day. As well as this, the venue will play a big part in the kind of attire appropriate to wear. A beach event for example, probably won’t call for guests to wear ball gowns and stilettoes. Attending a celebration is going to be a day filled with fun and joy, probably dancing, standing, sitting, drinking and eating. So keeping all of that in mind, you want to be as comfortable as possible while still loving your

outfit and feeling beautiful. Black is a classy option that will look formal, timeless, and great in pictures. If you love a little colour, then go all out and pick something fun and vibrant, it is a celebration after all. Accessories should never be forgotten, and this is where you can elevate your look. Add a little sparkle with diamonds, or some chic chunky gold jewellery. Don’t forget a pretty but practical clutch or handbag. You want something small and complementary to your outfit, but that will fit the essentials.

Nuts & seeds pack a punch New advice from the Heart Foundation reveals that eating as little as three to four handfuls of nuts and seeds a week has a significant benefit for heart health, decreasing the risk of heart disease by around 20 percent.

N

uts and seeds are nutrient dense foods packed with heart healthy fats, fibre and protein and a wide range of essential micronutrients. Eating them regularly within an overall healthy diet helps to lower total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, also known as the ‘bad’ cholesterol. In New Zealand, our consumption of nuts and seeds is generally low. Data from the last Adult Nutrition Survey suggests that average population intakes of nuts and seeds are around a third of the Heart Foundation’s recommendation. Heart Foundation National Nutrition Advisor Lily Henderson says the goal is to get more New Zealanders to build more nuts and seeds into their everyday meals. “Making small changes to your diet

by regularly including a few handfuls of nuts and seeds has a positive impact on our heart health,” she says. “Most of the benefits are seen when we eat up to 15g every day (or three to four handfuls a week), but further heart health benefits are likely with intakes higher than this. “The great news is regular intake of these amounts is not only good for us, there’s also good evidence from large population studies and clinical trials showing no impact on body weight which is a common misconception.” Lily says to get the greatest health benefits, nuts and seeds should be eaten as close to their natural form as possible, for example, whole, sliced or ground. Nut and seed butters like peanut butter are also a fantastic option especially when compared to other spreads like jam or honey.

Here are some tips for including more nuts and seeds in your diet. Add them to meals you already eat - the bonus is they add protein to keep you satisfied and extra texture and flavour. They can be added to breakfast, lunch and dinner meals or eaten as a snack. Sprinkle toasted sunflower seeds on top of a salad; add a spoonful of peanut butter in a smoothie or sesame seeds to top an Asian dish. Look for products that include them as a key ingredient such as cereal, crackers and bread. Consider the overall healthiness of the product and choose the least processed options where you can. Beauty, body & hair tips Looking for your new favourite product, treatment, hairstyle or workout but not sure where to start? Here are a few inside tips and tricks from local beauty, body and hair experts.

NICOLA QUINN BEAUTY & DAY SPA Say hello to Dermaplaning, a treatment to both exfoliate the skin and remove fine, vellus hairs on the face, also known as ‘peach fuzz’. Dermaplaning is one of the easiest and painless ways of removing unwanted hair from the face. Even better, it also rids the skin of any build-up of dead skin cells, all of which can contribute to making your skin look dull or uneven. Dermaplaning results in a healthier and more hydrated complexion and gives the skin a beautiful glow.

SURREAL HAIR Did you know, after each lightening service, there is residual alkalinity left behind on the hair? This can cause weak and damaged hair for up to 14 days after the treatment. Surreal Hair’s secret weapon when lightening hair, is Redken’s Shades EQ Bonder Inside. An all-in-one toner and bonder that helps to strengthen sensitised hair in one step. The bonder along with citric acid and taurine helps strengthen the hair, while reducing damage and alkalinity following lightening services. The formula also evens porosity and pH levels to ensure optimal colour results, shine and condition.

ith all thoughts of parking, getting home, and negotiating traffic left far behind, you settle into the indulgent upholstery and focus totally on enjoyment. You might be taking a trip for pleasure, with no motivation other than enjoying a beautiful day, a spot of sightseeing and a picnic lunch. Let’s not forget that cars and romance go together like a horse and carriage. The joy of a road trip can also be yours, with the team happy to journey from Timaru to Hanmer and anywhere in between. “The wineries of Canterbury are hard to beat for lunch and a day out,” says coowner of The Purrfect Ride, Heather Cumming. “We will get you there in style. You can sample all the delights,

and we will get you home safely.” Your journey can be low-key and extremely private if you wish to create an intimate atmosphere, avoid the paparazzi, or a detour through the avenues and social hotspots of Christchurch if you want to see and be seen. With four gorgeous cars for you to choose from, the company takes care of every detail. They enjoy putting together a package of in-car treats, bespoke to you. “We want people to feel pampered on their rides with us. or the bride especially, the desire to be the star of her biggest show is paramount, and if she has planned ahead, come her wedding day, she will look sensational. Moss Spa recommends brides start with their Bridal Pamper package 12 weeks before the big day. This includes a 15-20 minutes personalised consultation with spa manager Becky, who assesses the skin needs of each client to help them choose the best treatment plan. The treatment plan can include facials, body treatments, waxing, eyebrow and eyelash grooming. Around four days pre-wedding is perfect for that last facial, as well as body treatments, such as mud treatments for the back or decolletage. Two days from saying “I Do” sees brides and bridal parties having their manicures and pedicures. The bride and her guests are served champagne and nibbles throughout their pampering session. Lee Martin plays on From the traditional Here Comes The Bride, to lighting up the dance floor after the nuptials, music plays an important role in most weddings.

L

ee Martin is a Canterburybased singer/songwriter, in popular demand as a wedding singer. South African born, her latest album, Gypsy Soul, Motown-inspired and released in February this year, went straight to number 14 on the Top 20 New Zealand Official music charts. You can listen to the album on spotify now. Music is in her soul, having grown up listening to the likes of Van Morrison, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, and

Leonard Cohen. At age nine, she started her training in classical guitar, and has been singing and performing ever since, gliding effortlessly between soul, folk, rock, blues, and country genres, while maintaining her unique sound. Lee’s broad repertoire includes popular music from Elton John to Ed Sheeran and many more. “I love being part of someone’s big day,” she adds.

Just 10 minutes out of Hanmer Springs and only 90 minutes from Christchurch, Amuri Estate is the perfect destination to escape, relax and celebrate. The venue seats up to 200 guests and there is a luscious variety of spaces on the property. The ceremony lawn looks across the valley to the mountains – and lawn seating or grandstand-style seating rising up the bank are options. The paved canapé and drinks terrace are large enough for dining, and inside options include the large reception hall and the drawing-room. “It’s ideal for an intimate winter reception,” Manager and Wedding Planner Vanessa Orr says. Amuri Estate works with a selection of amazing catering companies mainly based in Christchurch, who come to the venue and use the on-site kitchen to bring your vision to life, be it buffet, plated, or shared style food.

The modern barn-style building boasts amazing views of farmland and mountains, and the beautiful lodge makes for easy overnight accommodation, although there is an array of options for accommodation in the nearby township that local transportation can take you to and from. The lodge sleeps six within three king rooms with an ensuite, and a kitchen/living area. The Wallace Peak Cottage sleeps two in a king room and has a kitchen, living, and log fire. A marriage of flowers Bridal fashion is as subject to change as any other genre of fashion; what is all the rage one year may be considered completely passé by the following year.

S

imilarly, the bridal bouquet has seen changing trends over the years. Leanne Lovell of Victoria Florists says the current trend is for bouquets that blend garden flowers with dried flowers. “Our blended bouquets can have dried flowers, such as bunnytails, wheat, grasses, hydrangeas, larkspur and helichrysum, alongside garden flowers. The combinations are endless and all beautiful.” Leanne says brides feel confident coming to see her, as they know Leanne and her team’s reputation as top flower designers with 90 years of experience between them. As the largest buyer of flowers in Christchurch, clients are assured of the widest and most select of flowers. “Our flowers are the freshest, with no damage or signs of wilting.” Leanne recommends that brides book a consultation to discuss their bouquet requirements with herself or her colleagues. “It’s a gorgeous space for bridal inspiration.” Victoria Florist, 107 Idris Road, Christchurch, call 03 351 7444. victoriaflorists.co.nz

T

he spacious store in Sydenham showcases an extensive array of New Zealand-made engagement and wedding rings – plus new and antique jewellery. “We offer many different styles, sizes and combinations of finishes, stones and metals, including a huge range for men,” says owner Andrew Kelso. “We go above and beyond for our customers; it’s not just about making a sale – we love to see their joy and excitement when they find or create the perfect piece.” To help facilitate this, Westende Jewellers has the largest

is, among other factors. Take inspiration from some of these beautiful local weddings, all demonstrating how a variety of venues can be so different and stunning in their own way.

On the beach

Garden vibes

Edgy industrial

In true Cantabrian style, a wedding in the hills will make for the most beautiful photographs with breath-taking views in every direction.

If you are summer lovers, a beach wedding is a fun and relaxed way to celebrate your love. Bare feet and sunhats encouraged.

Romantic and intimate, a garden wedding is the perfect way to keep things small and lowkey, in a pretty setting full of flowers and loved ones.

A more contemporary trend, inner city venues with brick, black steel and polished concrete features make for an extra cool and edgy setting.

Our venue, your way

Historic, versatile and fun all describe the popular Milton St Substation as a weddings, events and functions venue in central Christchurch. Warm brick tones, an industrial interior vibe, and several separate areas to utilise indoors and out, combine to make it a terrific place to exchange vows.

B

usiness as usual has been the work ethos, making it one of Christchurch’s most popular and busiest wedding venues during the past few months. As an events, functions and wedding venue, the Milton St Substation has everything needed on the one site, wrapped up in a picturesque, historic parcel and tied with a contemporary bow. Venue manager Alex Balchin says its capacity for up to 290 guests has meant Milton St has been able to carry on. “Last year was by far the busiest we have had,” he says.

Previously we hosted one or two a month; now we have Friday, Saturday and Sunday weddings each week.” Along with its historic relevance to the city, having several different spaces within the one that makes it really versatile. Some of those who married at Milton St during the past few months are pictured here. Top of the page - Mat and Keren (Eira Wyn Photography), below left - Hannah and Lethan (Libby Ellmers Photography), below centre - Taylor and Antony (Hannah Bird Photography), below right - the outside courtyard.

Dine in style

Ceremony options

Outdoor celebrations

With seating for 120 guests, there’s plenty of scope for themes, and for all the family and friends to celebrate. Catering, decorations, table settings, flowers, music, alcohol, lighting and room usage are all the choice of the happy couple. Staff are provided.

A variety of different rooms, upstairs and down, are suitable for the actual ceremony. Book early as dates tend to fill up quickly. Bookings are only taken for each year, starting at the beginning of the year. A booking means the whole venue for 24 hours.

An outdoor courtyard, entrance lobby, upstairs balcony and quiet lounge area allow guests of different ages to celebrate in their own comfort zones. The ground floor is ideal for dancing, and Milton St has one of Christchurch’s latest venue closing times.

True to you A wedding should encapsulate the personality of the couple getting married. This is what makes it their special day after all.

D

eciding on the overall theme of a wedding is one of the first big decisions. From there, the venue can be decided, the colour scheme, catering, dress code and so much more. Here is a breakdown of a few popular wedding themes, and some suggestions for what a wedding could include for each of these.

Bohemian

Fairytale

A bohemian style wedding is equally whimsical and romantic. With soft colours, twinkling lights and acoustic music, bohemian themes are playful, relaxed and beautiful. Venues could include forest, barn or garden settings.

For the happily ever after couple. A fairytale themed wedding is straight out of a movie, with elegance and magic sprinkled throughout the whole day. Venues may include churches, ballrooms or a grand house.

Try: - Flower crowns for bridesmaids - Vintage rugs down the aisle - Greenery for table runners - Candles, candles, candles - Dried flower bouquets

Try: - Colour palette of white, cream, pink and gold - Crystal chandeliers - A bridal crown - A large, tiered cake - Calligraphy on invitations and menus

Rustic

Classic

Destination

Simple beauty, a rustic wedding is stripped back and perfect for a relaxed and low-key couple who don’t want too much fuss. Minimal design with a focus on natural textures and soft lighting. Venues could include cabin style houses, gardens or farm settings.

A classic wedding never goes out of style. Think clean lines and minimal design, ultimate sophistication, and elegance. Following traditions but with a modern twist. Venues could include churches, museums, or a modern home.

Tropical vibes all the way. A destination wedding is fun, relaxed, and a bit of a holiday for everyone. Often set on a beach or in a resort, somewhere warm and beautiful. Venues could include an island resort or holiday beach house.

Try: - Casual dress code - Wooden and natural textures - Hand-tied bouquets - Fairylights and candles everywhere - Hand-written menus and signs

Try: - Black tie dress code - Bow ties for groomsmen - White floral bouquets - Sit down dinner with courses - A Champagne tower

Try: - Bare feet dress code - Tropical cocktails - Ceremony on the beach - Sunset photography - Short sleeve shirts and shorts

o all our supporters, thank you for helping us throughout our journey. Over the last few years your support enabled the Isaac Theatre Royal to be the first public arts venue to reopen after the earthquakes. You also helped us through the beginning of Covid. Thank you so much.

The long-term prospects of the theatre are promising, however we need your help to navigate through the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions to produce live events and entertainment for you to enjoy. We can not do it without you. Indeed, we cannot wait to welcome you back. Covid-19 has decimated our revenue, events, and all the arts community. We need to do The Big Ask campaign seeking your donations to help raise the curtain post-Covid. As a result of your ongoing support, the theatre was recognised at the EVANZ Awards as the NZ medium venue of the year in 2021. As a charitable trust, we operate independent of council and government. We rely on the events we host and the donations we raise. We have continued to be innovative, creative and agile. We are confident of navigating the challenges that we are faced with, however we do need your help again.

premier selection

A special occasion WORDS LYNDA PAPESCH

Special occasions call for extra attention when preparing the drinks menu. From Champagne to cocktails, sauvignons to spritzers, gewürztraminer to gin, the choice of tipples is almost infinite.

G

roup gatherings often start with bubbles to amp up the party feeling, and then progress to wine, beer, and cocktails. Large functions will often have a bar or a selection of drinks on the

tables, whereas more intimate settings, such as a romantic dinner for two, call for an ice bucket or just a couple of bottles as part of the setting. Here are some other essentials to consider:

Cocktails Water: Swap still for sparkling. Flavoured sparkling waters are hugely popular and are a great way to keep your guests hydrated without the ‘boring’ factor. They are a healthier option for those not wanting too much sugar either.

A rise in the popularity of gin has seen a resurgeance in cocktails, from the tried and true to new creations. Mix up a batch of your favourite in a punch bowl and let everyone help themselves. Don’t forget the garnishes.

Wine & beer More popular wine varieties include sauvignon blanc and its red counterpart cabernet sauvignon, yet there are dozens of others worth trying. Talk to your favourite wine shop guru if you’re looking for inspiration. Craft beers go down a treat too, especially those locally produced. Aim for lighter styles unless you know your guests prefer a stout or a hop bomb.

Mixers Useful for cocktails, those who might like to have the occasional palate cleanser in between courses, or those who want non-alcohol beverages.

Classy catering Whether it’s dinner for two, Sunday brunch with the family, or a larger gathering, catering can be stressful, unless properly planned.

L

imited access to many hospitality venues during the past few years has seen a rise in do-it-yourself functions as people have worked creatively to carry on with lives, celebrating

1. Choose between buffet or plated food. For more intimate functions, plated is ideal, but for larger groups, consider going buffet-style. This works well with others contributing dishes, and people serve themselves.

2.

birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, family and friends. Hiring a caterer is a great way to go. Whether you decide to out-source or DIY, here are some tips to make it easier.

3.

Select a theme based on the event type, and the venue. Casual is good for a barbeque, romantic for an intimate wedding anniversary, midwinter blues for a winter get-together, cocktails for any celebration.

Have a signature dish. Make an occasion more memorable using a signature dish or special recipe. It may be island-style raw fish, a gorgeous gateau for dessert, home-made pate, or granny’s famous Shepherd’s Pie.

4.

5.

If going DIY, make some dishes ahead of time. Don’t leave things until the last minute. Many dishes can be made a day early, and heated on the day. Curries, for instance, taste much better the day after they’ve been cooked.

Invest in beautiful dinnerware, cutlery and serving utensils. Plating food beautifully adds ‘wow’ to any occasion. Also think about a colour palette, and use fresh herb sprigs, flowers, and chopped nuts to decorate.

Singing the blues Blue is a much-loved colour, used throughout history by the ancient Chinese, the Egyptians, Greeks, Moors and many other cultures. As a colour it both contrasts and complements most other colours so it is a popular choice, especially for interior design. WORDS BY LYNDA PAPESCH

O

n the colour spectrum, it runs the gamut from pale icy blues to sea-kissed turquoise, deepest, darkest navy and every shade in between, which is why it is sometimes difficult to decide which blue is right for you. Ultimately the choice will

come down to the room’s orientation, and the effect you wish to create. In hot sunny rooms, the cooler the hue the better for a light airy feel, while a large room will appear more cosy and intimate in darker blues. Here are some tips:

• When decorating, different shades of blue mix easily, and can be used effectively to create serene schemes such as in a bedroom or to amp it up elsewhere. • Most colours work well with blue. Warmer hues such as yellow, orange and red will add warmth to a scheme, while neutrals will add style and chic. Blue and white is a classic, used throughout history by the Chinese, the Greeks and other early civilisations. • Accenting with black, brown and even cream also results in an elegant look, but avoid grey as it tends to make the room feel cold. • Blue works in any room of the house. Think cabinetry and tiles in the kitchen, paired with wood floors to add warmth, and natural stone for durability. If you want to keep it simple, use blue accessories such as towels in the bathroom, crockery in the kitchen, cushions in the bedroom. Metropol 14 April, 2022 77

Real music on pure hifi

Store manager, Carey Baird

Do you enjoy listening to music? Who doesn’t, right? These days the many ways you can access and listen to music can be overwhelming, and that’s where The Real Music Company comes in.

reviously called Purehifi, it has connected Christchurch music lovers with their collections for nearly 15 years. A specialist home entertainment store on Fitzgerald Avenue opposite C4 café, this hidden gem boasts solutions for all your home entertainment needs including home audio and hi-fi, home office, home theatre, media rooms and multi-room. “We offer a carefully-selected range of record players and accessories, amplifiers, streaming music players, speakers, all in one systems, cables, home audio furniture and so much more. We can design and install your system, plus service and repair when required,” says manager Carey Baird. “Your home music system needn’t clash with or clutter your home interior. We offer lots of options including personalised speaker finishes and in-wall or in-ceiling technology.” Carey adds that home electronics stores can feel intimidating, so clients at The Real Music Company are encouraged to relax on its demo room sofas and take the time to listen to their favourite music on a range of carefully-chosen home audio systems. “We specialise in getting you closer to your music collection - because music is the soundtrack to your life,” he adds. BELKIN’S BUDDING

earbuds

A self-confessed Belkin lover, Metropol’s gadget guru Ian Knott shoves the latest Soundform Rise Earbuds in his lugholes and discovers yet another quality, entry-level product from the brand.

T

he headphone and earbud market is a saturated one, with the big names like Skullcandy, Beats, Sony, Bose and Apple dominating much of the market. But with big brands often come big prices, and that’s where the peripheral brands come into play. One of those brands is Belkin - who make a fairly wide range of electronic accessories, not one you’d

probably associate with earbuds. Known for making quality products at just above entry level prices, they have a range of earbuds, the mid-range model of which is the Belkin Soundform Rise. At around $130, the Rise are definitely placed in the affordable bracket, but don’t look or feel cheap by any means. Available in white or black, they carry a little more weight than many, so feel quite sturdy - but that extra weight comes with some issues. In general, the Rise fit really nicely, and it’s easy to forget you have them in. But when things got a little sweaty at the gym, I found that because the excess weight sits out further from the ear, the buds started slipping out quite regularly. I certainly wouldn’t want to wear them out on the bike for this reason.

Sound-wise, the Rise are more than adequate, with a boosted bass that can’t be turned off, but can be adjusted via your phone settings. Audiophiles may want to steer clear though. There are the standard touch controls - volume, next/previous track and pause, and the built-in quad-microphones deliver excellent performance on calls and Zoom meetings. The Soundform Rise boast seven hours of playing time, with an extra 24 hours from the wireless charging case - a tricky thing to test, so we’ll have to take Belkin at their word. If you’re after an affordable earbud that delivers quality sound with all the useful features, then definitely consider Belkin as an alternative to the more obvious brands.

SURPRISE THEM WITH A GIFT THEY'LL NEVER FORGET.

Sleep soundly all night A good night’s sleep is vital for humans to function properly and given most of us spend one third of our lives in bed, it is essential to invest in a quality mattress.

A

n average person sleeps for eight hours in a day. That means that on average they will sleep for 229,961 hours (one third of the average life span) in their lifetime. Having a quality bed makes sleeping more relaxing, more enjoyable and is better for the body, says David Henderson, of Dreamwool Beds. “A bed is the most important piece of furniture in the house. It doesn’t matter what age or stage you are at, engaged, married, single, you still need a good sleep each night.

Think of it as a long-term investment.” His advice is to buy a buy a decent bed as soon as you can. Satisfied client Pam agrees. She and her husband have slept on a Dreamwool bed for several years now and can’t speak highly enough of them. They’ve recommended them to friends who also agree, and have followed their recommendation. “Previously we’d always bought other brand quality beds which repeatedly failed to

live up to our expectations. “We’d wake up hot, sweaty and out of sorts,” she explains. Once they decided to buy a Dreamwool bed there was no going back. “We noticed the difference straight away. We were well supported, comfortable and didn’t get out of bed the next morning feeling like a half-shut pocket knife. “We also love that it is New Zealand made, using natural products.” Her advice: “Don’t go for price over quality.”

Pick your mattress Key to that is having the right bed and mattress which is where Dreamwool Beds can help. Company director David Henderson says there is no better way to spend nights than sleeping soundly on a mattress filled with generous layers of soft, luxurious Merino wool sourced directly from select South Island farms. Dreamwool mattresses provide optimum comfort and temperature control, enabling you to get to a deeper sleep, faster, he says. “The combination of pure Merino wool, natural latex infused with activated charcoal, thousands of delicate microcoils and supportive pocketsprings, means Dreamwool mattresses provide sleepers with the perfect micro-climate for any season: cool, moisture-wicking confidence in summer and warm, luxurious comfort in winter. “Like sleeping on a cloud,” he adds. To sort your perfect bed and mattress visit the Dreamwool Beds showroom at 96 Disraeli Street, Sydenham or call 0800 753 754. www.dreamwool.com Metropol 14 April, 2022 85

all black & white IT’S NOT

A common misconception is that neutral colour schemes, especially those comprised of black and white, fall into the category of monochromatic colour schemes. However, it’s the distinct lack of colour that put these spaces into a category all their own. Project by Laura Lynn Johnston | Images by Wendy Fenwick.

T

he term ‘achromatic’ literally means ‘without colour’, so an achromatic colour scheme is one that possesses no hue and is designed using only black, white and grey. A monochromatic scheme, on the other hand, is one comprised of a single hue – often in a range of tones to create contrast and interest. But there is a third colour harmony category worth taking note of; while it falls within the same vein as the other two, this variation gets thrown around far less often: an accented achromatic scheme. An accented achromatic scheme is when a single accent colour is added to an achromatic scheme. Though often subtle, this accent hue tends to bring a definition and grounding to a space that might otherwise feel like it’s missing something in a way that’s tough to put your finger on. In this living space, it’s the incorporation of a cushion in a hue similar to Resene Dark Buff that elevates the

otherwise black and white scheme and makes it feel complete. Ever since the phasing out of wall-to-wall carpeting as the 1990s drew to a close, stained timber has been a popular choice for flooring. But over the last five years, stained timber clad walls – both inside and out – have also re-emerged as a trend. The resurgence in timber walls can most likely be attributed to the same reasons that timber floors came back into style: people love the way that wood reminds them of nature, and it’s a simple, durable and accessible way of bringing a little bit of the outdoors in. While a primarily black and white space could run the risk of being boring, the collective impact of this design feels chic and cohesive. It also strikes the ideal balance between casual and sophisticated thanks to its ample texture and gorgeous blend of Resene paints and timber stains.

PAINT COLOURS Plywood wall stained in Resene Colorwood Sheer Black, battens in Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene All Black, floor stained in Resene Colorwood Natural, sideboard, coffee table and plant pots in Resene Snow Drift, pillar, pendant lamp, lantern and vase in Resene Black White. ACCESSORIES Sofa and cushions from Nood, rug from Freedom, jute cushion cover and throw from Citta, circle vase from H&M Home, loafers from Zara.

Find your dream feature Cloud trees not only have a beautiful romantic-sounding name, but they are just as beautiful and amazing to look at.

S

o what exactly are cloud trees? They are sculpturelike trees pruned and formed using an ancient Japanese art form and these statement trees create maximum impact and focus in any garden. Niwaki is the Japanese method of cloud pruning – training trees and shrubs into shapes resembling clouds. Grow Landscapes and Lifestyle on Moorhouse Ave specialise in stocking wellestablished cloud trees. They have many stunning specimens in stock, including two 25 year old Acer Mikawas that are quite

simply astonishing to see in their huge pots. There is also a Podocarpus Blue Cloud and several topiary camellias and buxus. These cloud trees are exclusive to Grow Landscapes and are grown for them by a specialist nursery. When buying one of these highly sought-after cloud trees, choose one that you love as it will form an exquisite piece of art in your garden for many decades to come. There are other ways to create focal points in a garden. Grow Landscapes have a

large range of species that are suitable for planting in pots – Nikau palms, the iconic New Zealand native palm and golden bamboo are just two varieties available. You won’t need to go far to find appropriate pots either as there are fibre cement pots here of all shapes and sizes, including a customer favourite – the trough. Te Pae strikes gold Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre has expanded its sustainability credentials, receiving a Gold Sustainable Tourism Business Award from Qualmark.

T

he award builds on Te Pae Christchurch’s earlier achievement of Toitū enviromark gold certification, and is another step in the right direction for a team committed to safe and sustainable operations and events. Te Pae Christchurch General Manager Ross Steele said he was very proud of what the team had achieved so soon after opening.

“Very early on in our journey at Te Pae Christchurch we set a standard for how we want to operate and work with clients, suppliers and our industry. Sustainability and a strong focus on customer service are key pillars for us and it’s humbling to see our efforts recognised with gold by the Qualmark team.” Qualmark is judged on sector specific criteria across four areas – economic,

environment and culture, social/people and health and safety. Across the 26 criteria Te Pae Christchurch was assessed on, the Centre represented best practice in six, and achieved an excellent or very good score in the remainder. Two areas the centre performed particularly well in were economic and environment and culture. Visit tepae.co.nz

Lest we forget

Warm welcome back

The slow, beautiful changing colours of the leaves on the trees around the city are a sure sign that autumn is upon us.

A few weeks ago, I was delighted to join with colleagues from across the world for the Asia-Pacific Incentives and Meetings Event (AIME), held in Melbourne.

A

O

pril this year brings us two long weekends – Easter and Anzac - to enjoy the delights of autumn in Ōtautahi Christchurch. I hope you can all enjoy some restful time over these weekends, as well as supporting our local businesses who have been doing it tough. Anzac Day normally brings thousands of people out early for a special dawn service in the centre of Christchurch. This year the RSA has made the call there will be no mass gathering because they want to protect the health of their veterans and the public. There are other ways

to commemorate the day - laying a poppy at your local war memorial – there are several around Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. Or standing in silence at the end of your driveway at dawn, as many of us did in 2020 when the whole country was in lockdown. A virus can’t stand in the way of each of us holding fast to the tradition of remembering our veterans, and calling upon leaders across the world to commit to the peaceful resolution of conflict. The cost is too high, and the pain is too great. We must never forget.

ne of the business event industry’s largest trade events, AIME is a proven and valuable tool for connecting with clients, and sharing knowledge, insights and best practice with the best and brightest in business events. This year was no exception. While we’ve been fortunate to maintain a presence at AIME for the past few years, this trip marked the first time since 2020 that our Christchurchbased team has been able to travel to Melbourne and meet with clients in person. That the trip was prefaced by the announcement of New Zealand’s border opening to Australia in April and the rest of the world from 1 May was timely. With numerous Australasian conferences and events planned at Te Pae Christchurch

this year, the announcement was welcome news for our team, industry and the wider tourism sector in Ōtautahi. For our industry to survive and thrive, borders must be open. There is pent-up demand for our city and all the wonderful things it has to offer, but with the uncertainty around travel and quarantine restrictions, the confidence needed by many to take that next step and book has been missing. If anything was evident at AIME, it is that confidence is now returning to the market. We were absolutely blown away by the level of interest in Christchurch as a business events destination, and we can’t wait to welcome those guests to Te Pae Christchurch, Australasia’s newest convention centre.

A bright future

Migrant workers needed

Watching Kiwi Jane Campion win a best directing Oscar for The Power of the Dog demonstrated the power of screen stories to move and inspire people.

After a bumpy few months for the Canterbury Business Community, a return to normality is finally on the horizon.

T

hink of the Lord of the Rings effect, where about 1 percent of visitors to New Zealand said they came because of those movies, six percent said LOTR was one of the reasons they visited, and 80 percent said they knew the movie trilogy was filmed here. Screen stories put a region on the global map. Now think of the stunning, diverse landscapes of Waitaha Canterbury. They served as the backdrop for parts of LOTR and many more movies: Mulan, A Wrinkle in Time, Z is for Zachariah, The Hobbit, even Murder on the Orient Express. The screen industry, including gaming and special effects, is worth about $3.5 billion a year to New Zealand, but Canterbury

attracts only 2.5 percent of that. So there is huge upside for this industry and its potential is quickly being realised. The region’s screen office, Screen CanterburyNZ, has worked to unite the local industry, adopt a regional strategy, make filming easier by developing permitting protocols and launch a firstin-New Zealand $1.5 million regional screen incentive grant. The University of Canterbury’s recently announced $97 million Digital Screen Campus is a big vote of confidence in this opportunity. A thriving screen sector is the backbone of a strong creative economy, attracting a younger generation into future-proofed jobs, and Canterbury’s screen future is looking bright.

W

ith confidence levels at an all time low, and with many Cantabrians isolating at home, it has certainly been challenging for business. By and large our economy has performed well, with the notable exception of the hospitality and events sector which has borne the brunt of restrictive measures. Fortunately, the light at the end of tunnel is becoming more visible. The recent eradication of vaccine passes, easing capacity limits and removing them altogether for outside gatherings has immediately had a positive impact throughout the city. The buzz from the Women’s Cricket World Cup was palpable. With Hagley Park near capacity for the final match, Cantabrians and Christchurch did us proud on the world stage with an

international audience of over 180 million. We are eager to see a shift down to the orange traffic light setting as soon as possible. Public health evidence suggests we have passed the peak of Covid-19 infections, so removing the burdensome restrictions that have in many cases placed a handbrake on business is the right thing to do. As the borders reopen, we expect to hear more about what this will mean for immigration. The critical worker shortage remains the single largest barrier to business in New Zealand at present. Combine that shortage with the current brain drain and the urgent need for a pragmatic immigration policy becomes even more abundantly clear.

he concept design, which the public and stakeholders were consulted on in January, will see the wharf rebuilt in the same location and of the same length as the existing wharf, (155m) with concrete piles and structure and timber decking. Its deck would be raised approximately 0.60m from the present height to account for sea level rise and the width increased from 7.3m to 8m, whilst an additional pontoon structure will bring the total number to three. Work on a replacement wharf has been underway since a structural assessment in late 2018 found it was reaching the end of its viable life. Christchurch City Council Head of Parks Andrew Rutledge says the finalised concept design was developed following an extensive consultation process. Its completion will provide certainty for commercial operators, building owners and the public.

“It has been a three year process and I know that those involved will be keen to get the next stages underway,” he adds. Earlier this month the Community Board recommended that Christchurch City Council staff proceed to detailed design of the proposed Akaroa Wharf. It also asked that council staff investigate upgrading Drummonds Wharf, Dalys Wharf, the Wainui Wharf or other facilities for temporary use which could also deliver permanent improvements. Council will continue to work with commercial operators on the wharf infrastructure and pontoon location. It is proposed that the wharf would continue to provide access to fuel and future provision for electrical charging is being considered. Funding of $19.1m for the Akaroa Wharf project has been set aside in the 2021-31 Long Term Plan.

Are We

there yet?

Our two sons used to ask that very question whenever and wherever we travelled as a family. Mile after mile, they would look for clarification about what direction we were taking and we would look to reassure them with the odd fact and more than a little bit of parental fiction. If any of this sounds familiar, it’s probably because collectively as a nation we’ve been on a very long journey, a two-year journey that seems to have us coming out the other end. We’re hopefully wiser, kinder, a little (or a lot) more resilient, and ready to face the new environment. That environment, from a real estate perspective, looks different. Not necessarily worse, as some would say, but certainly different. ANZ Chief Economist Sharon Zollner, and I quote her because she’s readable and doesn’t try to bamboozle with statistics, says: “house prices in New Zealand have risen more than 40% since covid-19 first hit and they were problematically high to start with.”

She goes on to write that “this year is looking like a year of normalization” and that feels like an appropriate term. Her final comment being “we are forecasting a 7% price reduction but right now the risks are looking like a harder or faster landing,” with which I agree.

brings with it an equalizing effect.

And here’s what I’m seeing daily at a coalface level: house prices are steadying, which means reflecting more realistic current values, not the dazzling figures of last year.

It’s scary, but for those of us who own or hope to own property it’s still a wonderful long-term investment and a great time to prudently purchase.

Auction clearance levels are mostly now comprised of a 45 – 60% clearance rate on the day, followed by a 10 – 20% clearance immediately after, when many properties are being priced to engage new interest. The ‘immediately after’ requiring owners to realize that the raging market of the last 18 months has been replaced by a calmer, more measured one, and that realization also includes the knowledge that buyers have a much greater number of properties to select from. For some, that transitional thinking has been really difficult and there’s disappointment around not having come to the market earlier. For others there’s a different picture and an acceptance that selling and then buying on the same market

So, let’s get back to whether or not we are there. Without a doubt, it’s an uncertain time: there’s the prospect of significant interest rate increases and inflation, as well as a higher cost of living.

For owners, it’s also worth considering the gains that have already been accumulated over a time that we will one day look back upon with absolute wonder. Finally, I think we’re not necessarily there yet, but I believe that being here, right now, in this time and in this country, we are still pretty lucky. I can’t help but think about the places and countries throughout the world who aren’t.

Shaping your builds Modern construction is an arena for those with a broad skill base. Technical demands for engineering post-earthquake are intense, peer reviewing is mandatory post the leaky homes debacle, and we dare not mention the C word. Scarcity of materials has sent residential build costs well beyond inflation.

A

ny business set on thriving is evolving and diversifying to stay ahead. That’s where Angus Chisholm Builders come in. Angus is an experienced foreman working in concrete, metal, structural steel, and passive design. Partner Laura is a qualified engineer. They offer peer-review and technical advice, including review of plans, contracts, and price analysis. “We can assist with passive design, developer approvals, colour schemes and project management/construction monitoring of your build. We have the skills to help with paperwork and provide peace of mind during your build,” says Laura. They emphasise structure and design at the start of a project, to achieve a more affordable house. “We encourage a realistic time frame, with the emphasis on really excellent design. Time spent there means you can achieve your goals even with materials costs increases,” says Angus. “Sustainable designing, which moves towards a passive home, and a more modular build approach where the home grows with your family, can keep you within budget.”

Bathroom bliss Bathrooms are top of the list to renovate as they play a vital role in our daily life.

W

hen renovating a bathroom, there many things to consider, including whether it’s a family bathroom or an ensuite, the size of the room, and whether you can change the layout or just the furniture and accessories. Metropol shares some tips from manufacturer Methven.

Replace your vanity Removing your old vanity and replacing it with a new one will instantly make your bathroom feel like it’s had a full renovation. A wall mounted floating vanity will also open up the feel of a small bathroom space by adding more floor area.

Update your shower and tapware By simply replacing your tapware and shower you will transform the feeling of your bathroom. The basin mixer is typically the hero of your tapware collection. Once you are happy with this choice, select your shower and bathroom accessories with complimentary shapes to complete your bathroom and create a cohesive look.

Layout matters While changing the locations of certain features such as the bath can transform a small bathroom, others can be unnecessary and not cost-effective. Instead, try including decorative accents such as plants or décor, or alternatively a mirror to enhance the room and make it feel lighter and more spacious.

Outstanding aesthetics The mark of a great project is keeping build standards high while creating a product that pleases the eye and works in harmony with its surroundings, when the pressure is on.

N

obody looks at a new build with a more critical eye than the existing inhabitants of its neighbourhood, with both their quality of life and own home values to protect. Further, the thoroughfares around Hagley Park support both high value housing and arterial routes. The result was tens of thousands of judgemental pairs of eyes on the Aria Apartments, 27 Carlton Mill Road, opposite

iconic Little Hagley. But there was no need for apprehension; the aesthetics of the 11-unit build are outstanding. The combination of red-pink Purple Heart timber, black roof, off-white walls, gable and peaked roof make for cohesive exterior. Farrell Construction’s Project Manager Johnny Clark says “we used a robust style of construction that is designed to last. Concrete panels and floor are underpinned with a massive

foundation, while timber is used through the middle to lighten the load.” Four smaller ground floor apartments and carport parking are joined by seven duplex units above.

“They all have a beautiful finish, but my favourites are two upper apartments, one under the gable projection and the other at the Carlton Mill Road end which features a pair of balconies,” he adds. www.farrellconstruction.co.nz

From there he moved to Canberra where he was the sole employee in the ACT state for Atlantic Plumbing Services. Problem solving skills at the fore, Tom focused on growing his branch and developed a lot of key clients in the region. From there it was off to the head office in Sydney. “The company had 40 maintenance

being able to fix problems where others have failed. “We don’t get called because the client wants to tell us how happy they are,” he laughs. “They call us because they have a problem.” Embracing the problem solving approach, Tom and Claire believe in evolving their business for continued success. “Systems are very important,” says Claire. “We have incorporated job management systems Tradify along with Micos Tradedoor and Xero. You have to have efficient systems in place to properly meet the needs and standards that our clients expect.”

vehicles and myself and one other guy oversaw the day-to-day operations of these plumbers. I learnt so much about people management and I was just 26,” he recalls. After a decade cutting his teeth in the big, wide world Tom returned to New Zealand with the goal of running the family plumbing business. “From that point on we have been growing R J Crouch to what we are today. I have taken what I have learnt overseas and combined it with the longstanding ethos of the company.” The business isn’t the only thing growing. “Claire has a passion for plants and the office is a much greener place,” Tom laughs.
