FROM THE EDITOR LYNDA PAPESCH

Let it snow

Here’s wishing all the wonderful mums out there a Happy Mother’s Day on 8 May. Mothers deserve to be looked after every day, but once a year works for me. We’re heading into the last month of autumn and being NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019

greeted by the smell of wood fires in the morning and early evening, there’s already been a sprinkling of snow, and the winter woollies have made it to the front of wardrobes. This month marked the end of my first year as editor at Metropol, and 12 months exploring and finding my way around Christchurch. I continue to be amazed – although not surprised – at the tenacity, creativity and hard work that makes this gorgeous city pump. Ongoing build projects, revitalised businesses and the return of tourists to the Garden City add up to a bright future. New Zealand’s border opening came at the

Pre-pandemic, around 160,000 Australians visited in winter 2019. From June to August 2019, Australian visitors spent more than $211 million, around 40 percent of all spending by international tourists. Part and parcel of that is snow tourism which comes with flow-on effects across Canterbury and further south. So dig out the skis and boards, polish them up and join the Aussies hitting our slopes. Dreams DESIGNING HER

Former Cantabrian Caitlin Crisp is a fashion force to be reckoned with, recently celebrating the launch of her label’s latest collection. Metropol’s Georgia Summerton catches up with Caitlin about her journey in business so far, and the designs that fashion lovers everywhere can’t seem to get enough of.

A

fter studying Fashion Technology and a stint on the much-loved television show Project Runway, Caitlin took a leap of faith and launched her very own brand a few years ago. The young designer is now making a name for herself as one to watch in the fast-paced and cut-throat fashion industry. Over the few years her namesake label Caitlin Crisp has existed, it has gone from strength to strength, and is seen in stores throughout New Zealand, including a few here in her old home city. Treasured in the wardrobes of so many Kiwi women, her designs are known to sell out quickly after launching. During the few short years the brand has existed, Caitlin has successfully launched six seasons of her one-of-a-kind pieces. Her label started with Caitlin creating one-off pieces and made to measure orders. Having just celebrated the launch of her sixth collection, it is fair to say the brand is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after by a New Zealand designer. She is proud of how far her brand has come, and for staying true to herself through it all. “I’m proud that I have come this far by being myself and doing what I love. For that, I’m the luckiest girl in the world and I’m proud that I haven’t changed for anyone or anything.” Caitlin’s design are timeless, and elegant, while incorporating a touch of fun. The brand specialises in creating small, exclusive runs, always looking to support New Zealand suppliers of fabric and trimmings where possible. She describes her recent season six launch as

“stressful, exciting and incredibly rewarding”. “We have put more energy and resources toward this launch than any other, but it all paid off. I am most proud of my team for making it happen through a very challenging year.” And a challenging year it was, as have been the last few. Fashion, like many other industries, has been impacted by the restrictions and challenges the Covid-19 pandemic has created. “I launched the brand just before Covid-19 hit so it’s all I’ve really known so far. I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in a world without it.” Being a creative means always looking for new inspiration, and she says this mostly comes from “my friends, family and surroundings”. “I’m always thinking about what works and what doesn’t work and how I can put a Caitlin Crisp twist on it.” As for her own style? “Feminine, comfortable and versatile. My everyday style needs to be appropriate to wear while sewing, and at the same time to also meet and greet customers, which can be a challenge!” Even without the challenges of a global pandemic, the fashion industry is not an easy one to break into. It is inspiring for budding designers everywhere to see such success from a small label, led by an incredibly talented, albeit young designer. There is no doubt Caitlin has come up against challenges along the way, but her strong sense of self-belief as well as an influential support system around her seems to be a constant guide for her and her journey to the top. And it sure looks like that’s where she is heading.

W H AT ’ S O N T H E H O R I Z O N F O R 2 0 2 2 ? “I can’t wait to launch the first drop of our winter collection in May... it’s seriously stunning! However, I am currently sampling for summer which always makes me happy and excited for the warm climates ahead. All in all, lots to look forward to! 2022 is definitely off to a good start.” 10 28 April, 2022 Metropol

NZ’s ‘Silent Army’ In the wake of Anzac Day, a call has gone out for untold stories of the silent sacrifice made by New Zealand women during World War II.

New industry workers in a Christchurch factory pressing out metal fittings for gas masks

T

heir service in New Zealand and overseas is often overshadowed by that of our war heroes, but historian and author Renée Hollis is looking to change that. After the success of her book Voices of World War II: New Zealanders Share Their Stories, she is now working on a social history project focusing on the experiences of New Zealand women during World War II. This involves immersing herself in letters and diaries from women who helped keep the home fires burning or served overseas. “I am looking for stories that have never been shared before, that will give the reader a real insight into what women’s lives were really like during World War II,” she says. Sources could include those who can recall childhood memories of wartime, mothers raising children while their husbands were fighting overseas, volunteers, land girls, women who worked in the factories as well as the Red Cross, the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps, the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, and the Women’s Royal Naval Service. She is also keen to hear about the experiences of New Zealand women who served overseas as nurses, pilots, ambulance drivers or entertainers. n September 1981, the City of New York hosted a now legendary benefit concert for the people of their city, Simon & Garfunkel – the Concert in Central Park. A reported 500,000 fans turned out for the benefit. Aside from being arguably the first major rock event of the 1980s, culturally the concert marked one of music’s most important forces coming full circle At the two Kiwi anniversary concerts – in Christchurch and Auckland – artists will perform the music from the original concert, plus some additional selected special songs. The exceptional song-writing genius of Paul Simon is apparent in the huge body of songs that will feature throughout the concert. America, Sound of Silence, The Boxer, April Come She Will, and Bridge Over Troubled Water are just a few of the masterpieces set to play. While Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel will not be performing, their haunting, ethereal and melodic tones will be captured by Sam Scott, Luke Buda (Phoenix Foundation), Holly Arrowsmith, Age Pryor (Fly my Pretties) and Anita Clark (Motte).

The environment and sustainability are among the company’s core values and it practises what it preaches. “A sustainable society is one that balances Planet (the environment), People (society) and Prosperity (our economic activities),” says Duane. “Whether that’s through improving our own business efficiencies, providing recycling for our machines and toners, supporting organisations championing green policies, or planting thousands of trees annually, we aim to lead businesses in being sustainable.” The company’s support is not just for the wider community. A leading provider of office equipment, document solutions and product, software and service support, its business ethos is all about connecting people, processes and technology so that they can forward on focus.

Lending a hand

Giving back to the community is an important part of business these days. One company lending a helping hand with projects such as its annual Big Green Day Out and support of various other charitable organisations is Ricoh Christchurch.

Is housing still hot? Taken by storm in 2021, the property market ran hot with prices soaring and even the most seasoned speculator surprised by the boom.

I

t was a seller’s jackpot. However, it seems a tipping point has been reached as a potent cocktail of new tax rules impact on the profitability of older rentals alongside an increase in the Official Cash Rate and the tightening of lending criteria. It’s a powerful brew designed to curb the soaring house prices. However, for Kathryn Picton-Warlow, the property market remains viable and vibrant. She believes it’s likely there will be a price correction, a softening, and she is optimistic about the future of real estate throughout Canterbury and New Zealand. Her advice is that clients seek expert advice from qualified professionals to ensure their lending structures and investment portfolios are manageable and viable, regardless of projected interest rates and the increased cost of living.

Adept in sales and marketing and with a seasoned eye for property, she understands the market well and has already seen the attitudinal shift in buyers from one of FOMO (fear of missing out) to its antithesis, FOOP (fear of overpaying). “The frenzied purchasing of 2021 is last season’s fad,” she says, welcoming 2022 with its shift to thoughtful and deliberate property sales. It’s in this market that Kathryn’s expertise comes to the fore, not just her aptitude for marketing and sales, but her ability and willingness to build rapport and communicate with her clients, understanding and listening to their needs, not the industry hype. “Completing a sale is satisfying, but it’s the people behind the sale that drive me – the delighted vendor, the eager purchaser, the people for whom the sale is personal,” she explains.

Commitment and support Recent open home numbers plummeted over the space of three short weeks, and in a fast market that is moving quickly, Kathryn attributes this to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Now, more than ever, it is imperative to engage a trusted brand and a wellrecognised agent,” she says. Her skill set is “engaging, sincere and based on trust”. “I support and manage my clients’ expectations, providing open and honest feedback and the right information. “In an industry that’s flux and ever-changing, it’s vital that an agent has up-to-the-minute information. I personally network and research tirelessly to ensure my clients receive only the best detail. “Each client is unique, as are their needs. My commitment to them and their individuality is constant.” If you’d like to talk about this featured hgiouse, or another, call Call Kathryn on 027 244 1810 or 03 355 6116, email kathryn.picton-warlow@ harcourts.co.nz www.holmwood.co.nz

MEET THE PRINCIPAL

Julie Calder, Principal

Selwyn House School H

aving started as Principal of Selwyn House School at the beginning of this year, I have enjoyed taking some time to observe, listen and learn about what it is that makes Selwyn House the special school that it is. Having both worked in Christchurch schools for the last 30 years and put my children through school here in Canterbury, I was already well aware of the excellent reputation that Selwyn House School has. However, my firsthand experience here has exceeded my expectations. The range of specialist teachers on staff – from Art, Music, Spanish, and Performing Arts, to Science, Mechatronics, Future Problem Solving, and Physical Education

– means students receive a broad and rich education at primary school level and can develop their passions and talents that will serve them so well in secondary school and beyond. By providing a supportive, nonjudgmental learning environment that encourages every student to be themself and be proud of it, Selwyn House School is nurturing the kind of self-confidence and self-awareness that will set students on a path to be the best they can be. We are proud to encourage our students to be risk-takers and problem-solvers while developing their future leadership skills in many different arenas. Through the International Baccalaureate

curriculum, students are learning to be global thinkers. They are developing empathy and understanding, as well as powerful critical and creative thinking skills, that will allow them to make a difference in the world they live in. I am a firm believer in treating every child as a unique learner. A one-size-fits-all approach to education simply does not cater to the many different learning styles and wonderfully individual brains that we each possess. That’s why I’m proud to lead a school that demonstrates an individual learning approach. With small class sizes and committed teaching staff, we can fully support each student in their endeavours. As a result, we can ensure that each girl who enters Selwyn House School will come out the other end of it as a confident individual who understands how they learn best, appreciates their strengths, believes in their unique abilities, and is excited about the part they can play in the world. Girls truly thrive at Selwyn House School! www.selwynhouse.school.nz

MEET THE PRINCIPAL

Christine Leighton, Rector

St Andrew’s College T

he St Andrew’s College community has welcomed 2022 with great energy, and a sense of excitement as we mark the 30th anniversary of officially becoming coeducational. After four ‘trail blazers’ had enrolled as the first senior girls in 1991, it was a momentous and positive occasion when 55 female students walked through the gates at St Andrew’s in 1992, transforming our traditional all-boys school forever. Girls now make up around 40 per cent of our roll, and female teachers make up 52 per cent of our staff. Some of the children of those first girls now attend the College. Today we are proud to be the South

Island’s only independent school offering Pre-school to Year 13 education for both boys and girls. I went to a co-educational school myself and believe it is the best way to prepare young people for their future in a diverse society. Collaboration in the co-ed classroom helps boys and girls in many ways. They gain a fresh perspective from each other intellectually, develop socially, and become more confident in expressing their views around members of the opposite sex. First and foremost, St Andrew’s College is a place of learning, with a focus on developing our students’ growth mindset and a love of learning. Taking part in our broad co-curricular

programmes, whole-school celebrations, and service activities helps our students to learn many valuable skills and attributes, which complement their academic learning. Despite the disruptions caused by Covid-19, students at St Andrew’s College have continued to thrive in their academic and co-curricular pursuits. This is a testament to their resilience, the hard work and dedication of our staff, and the programmes we have put in place, including our comprehensive online learning programme. There are many different leadership opportunities on offer at St Andrew’s College. This year, we are delighted that our Head Girl, Grace Lawrence, and Head Boy, Harry Withers, along with the prefects, have come up with a clever theme, ‘Unity Builds Community’, which is highly relevant in these challenging times. www.stac.school.nz

Diana Patchett Executive Principal

St Margaret’s College I

t is widely accepted that the world will benefit from new combinations of leadership, ones where women play a fundamental role. It is our intention at St Margaret’s College to realise the next generation of young women with strong traditional values, empowered to step confidently into the modern world. SMC offers that balanced foundation. We are a modern school with incredible facilities and opportunities, founded on traditional family and Christian values. At the same time, we are a traditional school, rich in culture and heritage, filled with modern girls who aspire to make a positive difference in the world, supported by families who share high

expectations for their girls. And these expectations are not just academic ones. SMC continues to be amongst the top academic schools in the country, with a curriculum tailored to best meet the needs of our girls, while giving them a rich and rewarding involvement in sports and the arts to an elite level. No two children are the same, and that is a good thing. At SMC, we celebrate diversity, we amplify it, for we know that each girl comes to us with her gifts and abilities and that it is our privilege to uncover those, and more. This helps to set her up for success, whatever success looks like for her, as she moves through our school and then out into the world.

Making that all-important decision around schooling is one no parent takes lightly. It is a significant investment, but one that your child will reap the rewards of for the rest of their life. Knowing and playing to your strengths, being an open-minded and flexible thinker, having confidence in your skills and abilities, practising well-developed interpersonal and collaborative skills to be able to work well with others, and perhaps most importantly, demonstrating the resilience to embrace failure as a necessary means to realising a solution to new challenges – these are invaluable life skills for all ages. At SMC, the development of these powerful graduate attributes is intrinsic to the academic, social, physical, and spiritual programmes we afford our girls. At the heart of it all, St Margaret’s College is a family that values each girl for the gifts and talents she brings, that provides a safe place for her to take on new challenges, and empowers her to learn, live and lead. www.stmargarets.school.nz

Scott Thelning Principal

Cathedral Grammar

T

he pursuit of excellence, strong character, broad opportunities, multiple pathways for success and focussing on our students’ well-being is at the heart of all we do. Cathedral Grammar is an independent school providing high-quality education for pre-school, primary school and intermediate aged girls and boys on the banks of the Avon River overlooking Hagley Park. Our school is a place of ambition alongside preparation where students learn from the best. Every year level benefits from the expertise of highcalibre specialist teachers across multiple subjects, a structured timetable, and small class sizes meaning learning is amplified

and every child’s strengths are identified and built upon, with support provided at every step of their journey. Our deliberate approach towards learning and development of independence sees each student transitioning through a layered and structured approach from Pre-School to Year 8. This sees our senior students immersed in a secondary school style timetable accessing multiple teachers across a range of specialist areas including music, art, physical education, science, mathematics and English. Co-curricular programmes and opportunities, service activities and celebrations of achievements are fundamental to the holistic approach we take to ensure our students develop

a well-rounded approach to who they are as a person, as a learner and as a contributor to society. We support, nurture, develop and guide, but as a school we celebrate success, keep the score, award placings, present cups and maintain our historical records of sporting and cultural achievement. Our Term 1 and 4 sport programme extends upon the traditional sports our students participate in for clubs on the weekends. This term our students selected from zip-lining, golf, surfing, skateboarding, horse riding, tennis, badminton, mountain biking, circus arts, dance, ice skating and gym sessions at Anytime Fitness. Friday afternoons are eagerly anticipated and a lot of fun. Here at Cathedral Grammar everything is on our doorstep. The inner-city location provides the school with wonderful nearby resources and a special opportunity to integrate these into our teaching programmes. We are a unique primary school in a unique setting. We welcome you to come and experience our offerings. www.cathedralgrammar.school.nz

Woollen winter warmth Cashmere, merino, homespun – they’re all types of wool and they all equate to being warm in winter.

T

otally natural, renewable and biodegradable, wool is the preferred fibre of millions worldwide, used to produce apparel and footwear. Wool garments are naturally breathable down to the fibre level, allowing air to flow between the fibres.

This breathability means wool doesn’t feel clammy when you sweat and will prevent you from overheating. Wool is also extremely versatile, for women’s and men’s apparel, from hats to sweaters to suit and jackets, sock, scarves and even undergarments.

Why wool?

Details: Superluxe cream sweater Find me: Modern Love

Softness and comfort - Merino and other high-quality wools are more malleable than traditional, coarser varieties. It can be processed to a superfine fibre, making it very soft. Moisture absorbent - Wool can absorb large quantities of moisture, keeping it away from your skin for a comfortably cool feel. Being proactive it will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. Great fit - Wool has a natural stretchiness and also easily snaps back into shape, despite continuous wear and cleaning. Its smooth fibres and easy stretch means a lovely drape, without cling. Easy to take care of – Most varieties are machine washable, and many can be tumble dried, too. Additionally wool is both stain and odour resistant, thanks to a unique outer layer that helps to repel stains and keep them from being absorbed.

his 100 percent natural fibre’s properties are worth extolling. Wool is biodegradable, sustainable, ethical, renewable, resilient, non-toxic, and is a natural temperature regulator and fire retardant. Kate MacDonald loves wool so much that she recently launched Davaar and Co, to bring a touch of classic country to the city, and remind us why wool is so uber-cool. “Our jerseys are a crossbreed composite of Romney, Perendale and Texel. The sheep are bred on my family’s farm, then the wool is scoured at Washdyke, spun in Wellington

and knitted in Dunedin.” Kate’s commitment to supporting local sees the finished product sustainably packaged by Kate from the cottage she resides in on the 1100-hectare station. Reflecting our unique landscape, the jerseys come in four colours – snow, bark, granite and tussock. So versatile are these jerseys, you can wear them to the gym, the office, the bistro, catching a movie, picking up the kids, and that really important one… snuggling with your best buddy at day’s end. PL uses the power of light to reduce brown spots, rosacea, and small dilated capillaries while also tightening pores and stimulating collagen production. It is recommended to have a course of treatments, anything from three to six treatments spaced about a month apart. Remember it has taken years to accumulate the sun damage, so it is going to take a few treatments to restore the skin to its original youthful appearance. Before having an IPL treatment, it is important that you haven’t been tanning in the sun for the three previous weeks. You also need to let the clinic know if you are on any medications, especially ones that can make you sun sensitive. Not all IPL machines are equal, so make sure that the clinic you are going to uses an authentic, gold standard IPL machine. If it’s not then it can cause burns and poor results. IPL improves the texture and tone of the skin by removing blemishes and stimulating collagen to lift, lighten and brighten, giving the skin a healthy, luminous glow. This month the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic which has the Lumenis M22 IPL (Gold Standard) has the deluxe IPL on special to stimulate collagen and remove sundamage.

The glowing skin secret The top non-surgical skin-lifting and glow-boosting skin treatment for 2022 is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), also known as the photo facial.

BATTLING

skin problems Most of us suffer skin problems from time to time, so it is good to know there are some simple, hardworking solutions for most of them. Here are a few ideas from Metropol to combat a couple of the more common conditions.

Redness If you are prone to rosacea, eliminate any products that may cause irritation, and consider using a retinoid night cream. Retinol increases the rate of cell turnover in the skin, normalising its equilibrium. Look for a facial cream that’s not too heavy or rich, and one that will add a barrier of protection for your skin. Serums and masks may also help, so consider using a soothing one. For extreme irritation, see a certified dermatologist.

You can also check Reinvent Boutiques Instagram for regular live videos, where Aimee showcases fabulous new items in store.

Acne Acne and oily skin are the most common side effects of stress. For immediate relief, try a clarifying cleanser twice daily, and avoid over-exfoliation. If you suffer from blemishes try a spot treatment with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as an active ingredient. Use a light moisturiser once a day, and consider a lightweight gel that hydrates the skin and absorbs quickly. Website: www.reinvent.co.nz Instagram: @reinventboutiquenz Metropol 28 April, 2022 35

Learning resilience

N

The last few years have been challenging for most New Zealanders, including children. Developing the skills to cope with uncertainty and disruption from a young age is incredibly valuable, but hasn’t always been feasible for parents.

ew funding from the Ministry of Health is giving Kiwi kids free access to practical and easyto-use resources for building emotional resilience throughout the pandemic and beyond. Included in the options is the latest Fear-Less Triple P Online - a programme specifically designed to help children and young people get on top of anxiety. Triple P Lead, Jackie Riach, welcomed the funding and said that Kiwi mums and dads who are concerned about their children, now have easily accessible parenting guidance

that they can use on the go or at home to support their children’s mental health and wellbeing. “Now more than ever, parents, carers, children, and young people, are living with increased levels of anxiety and stress due to the pandemic, with 2020/2021 data revealing that almost six percent of Kiwi children aged two to 14 years, experienced emotional or behavioural problems, including diagnosed depression, anxiety disorders, and ADHD,” says Riach. e are living in a time of amazing change, but are we also feeling something changing in us and can’t quite put our finger on it? What if all this upheaval over the past two years is a good thing?” asks Hamish Harcourt of My Heaven in Merivale. “Viruses and social distancing were giving us the opportunity to revitalise as individuals and lock-downs were our time to rest; maybe life is trying to tell us something?

“It’s all a matter of perspective and what is important to us,” he adds. Hamish has been practising holistic therapies for many years and comes highly recommended. Trained in Swedish Massage, Reiki, Reflexology, Pulsing and mixing a number of modalities and studies to individualise treatment, he applies his training together with his intuitive ability to offer treatments that are like no

THE DOWN-LOW ON

Vitamin D

Vitamin D - there’s more to it than meets the eye. Sandra Walsh from the Herb Nerd NZ explains.

W

hile it’s called a vitamin, it’s actually a hormone called calcitrol. An appropriate name as it helps with calcium uptake and healthy bones. It’s also required for optimal brain function, respiratory health, cardiovascular health and is the fulcrum to a balanced immune system. To make Vitamin D, a dose of UVB rays from the sun gets the ball rolling. Yes, the

sun is your friend. Excitedly, this activated form travels to the liver where it is converted to the prohormone calicdol. This heads through the blood to the kidneys where, with open arms, it is converted to the active form of Vitamin D, calcitrol. It’s released into the bloodstream. Supplementing with too much Vitamin D can disrupt this delicate pathway. Dizziness, muscle weakness, kidney stones, nausea

or vomiting are a sign of overdosing. It is strongly recommended to include cofactors or helpers such as Vitamin K2, zinc, magnesium, boron, Vitamin A, and quercetin when supplementing with Vitamin D.” Unsure what do to? “Drop by the Herb Nerd NZ and have a chat, we want only the best for you and your whānau.” Sandra Walsh, BSc. The rise and fall of the nerd neck WORDS BY LYNDA PAPESCH

In days long gone, ramrod straight backs were synonymous with good deportment. Girls were made to walk with books on their heads to perfect good posture. Even today many mothers tell their children not to slouch, and to stand up straight, with shoulders back and chests out.

P

osture is still often evoked to represent the ideal, the beautiful, the perfect body, yet some practices in recent decades hinder it for thousands of young and old. Many children and millennials are starting to develop kyphosis, or curvature of the thoracic spine, by sitting for prolonged periods of time in a “shrimp position” while stooped over mobile phones and computers. “Nerd neck”, as it is called, puts undue pressure on the spine and can lead to disc herniation and early onset osteoarthritis, experts believe. They often prescribe physician-guided exercise programmes such as core-strengthening yoga and Pilates workouts. Core exercises strengthen the muscles of the spine, abdomen, and pelvis, which support all physical activity. The right exercises can improve your posture and correct forward head posture over time.

Perform several of the following exercises 2-3 times a day, 3-4 sets of each exercise:

ARE YOUR EARS BLOCKED? REDUCE YOUR RISK

Bowel Cancer New Zealand has the highest rate of bowel cancer in the world. But early detection can help prevent or cure it.

DON’T GRAB THE COTTON BUDS! Or hair clips, pipe cleaners, or paperclips! We have heard many horror stories over the years of attempts to remove annoying ear wax. Delving in your ear with anything can be very dangerous and painful, with the risk of causing infections or lasting damage.

A referral to The Endoscopy Clinc for bowel cancer screening can give you peace of mind.

Hear Again can remove excessive earwax easily and painlessly using gentle microsuction. Unblock your ears the easy way.

Start checking early Which age range do we traditionally think of as being most likely to develop bowel cancer?

T

he answer is people in the 60 to 74 year old age group and indeed this group can now be checked for bowel cancer through the National Bowel Screening Programme. Gastrointestinal surgeon, Ross Roberts of the Endoscopy Clinic in Christchurch points out that this is not the full picture however.

What you might not be aware of “Bowel cancer isn’t just an ‘old person’s’ disease. Less well known is the risk of bowel cancer in younger patients,” says Ross. “Actually you’re never too young to get bowel cancer and sadly over 350 people under the age of 50 are diagnosed with the disease each year.”

What needs to be done? Ross Roberts is advocating for an increased awareness of this problem. That’s because early symptoms in young people may be overlooked simply because of a general preconception that bowel cancer is a disease for older people. “So the disease is not always picked up early enough and many younger Kiwis have symptoms for months or even years before being diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer.” Supporting Ross Roberts’ stance was an article in The Press newspaper earlier this year entitled ‘Young people fight for bowel tests’. The article highlighted the prediction that globally within the next decade one in four rectal cancers will be diagnosed in adults under

the age of 50. The article also reported on calls that are being made to lower the National Bowel Screening entry age from 60 to 50 and for more funding to undertake colonoscopies in younger patients.

What steps should you take? “No matter what your age, if things don’t feel right, don’t sit on your symptoms – see a doctor. Get the symptoms checked out. Accept no “buts” - don’t accept “but you’re too young to have bowel cancer. Catching bowel cancer early is really important and often means it’s treatable and manageable.”

What to look out for? Being aware of the symptoms is the first step you can take to prevent bowel cancer. Symptoms may include: bleeding from the bottom (rectal bleeding); change of bowel motions/habits that come and go over several weeks; anaemia (iron deficiency), severe persistent or periodic abdominal pain; a lump or mass in the abdomen; tiredness and loss of weight for no obvious reason.

Bowel cancer does not discriminate. It can and will strike anyone at anytime. Bowel Cancer New Zealand’s website (www.bowelcancernz.org.nz) is an excellent resource and has many stories of young people who have been diagnosed with the disease. www.endoscopyclinic.co.nz Metropol 28 April, 2022 41

Treat mum Mothers deserve to feel special every day, but on that one day a year dedicated just to them, it’s nice to put in a little extra effort.

A

homemade breakfast is a lovely gesture, and a small way to say thanks. Getting the siblings together to organise a delicious spread

is the perfect way to start mum’s special day. Here is some scrumptious inspiration, best served alongside a beautiful bunch of flowers.

Sweet

Savoury

Pastries

Everyone loves a little sugary goodness, and there is just something about maple syrup and chocolate that feels fitting for a special occasion. Try whipping up some pancakes, waffles, French toast or pikelets, topped with maple syrup, chocolate drizzle or a simple lemon and sugar mix.

A classic big breaky can’t be beat. Grab a nice loaf of bread from your local bakery to have alongside mums favourite eggs, mushrooms and bacon. Or a more simple option, avocado and tomatoes is always a hit, you can fancy it up with a sprinkle of fresh herbs and freshly squeezed juice to match.

Not all of us are kitchen whizzes, so picking up a selection of beautiful fresh pastries from your local bakery is a special treat for mum’s breakfast. Served alongside jam and spreads, a pot of coffee or tea and some fresh fruit is sure to delight mum (and the rest of the family).

Basic buttercream Ingredients 150g butter, softened 2 cups icing sugar 2 Tbsp milk 1 tsp vanilla A few drops of food colouring

Method 1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees C. Grease a 18cm round cake tin with butter, and line with baking paper. 2. Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl and beat together for about one minute, or until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, you just want it nice and smooth. 3. Transfer mixture to tin and bake in oven for about 40 minutes. Poke the centre of the cake with a skewer and if it comes out clean it’s ready, if not the cake may need another five minutes or so. The top should spring back when touched and be well risen and golden. 4. Allow to cool fully before icing. Alternatively, dust with icing sugar for a simple finishing touch.

Heavenly salmon

Not much beats gathering some friends around to catch up over drinks and a delicious platter, especially when the hero is succulent salmon.

E

njoyed hot smoked, cold smoked, baked, fried, or flaked onto crackers, salmon is a muchloved part of so many household gatherings and celebrations. More than 25 years ago Henry Studholme, director of Sovereign Salmon, purchased land in Hororata and transformed a state-of-the-art abandoned honey processing plant, into a fullyfunctional salmon smoking factory. It is now the only New Zealand wholly-owned and operated export-eligible smoked salmon processing plant in the country. The factory employs around 20 people, and any passing public are

welcome to browse the factory shop, at 165 Hororata Road, for tempting smoked salmon goodies. The New Zealand Salmon comes from Stewart Island and the delicious range of various cuts and ready-to-eat varieties are not only sold at the factory shop but at their very own Salmon Heaven shops in the Bush Inn Centre Christchurch and at 124 Parnell Road Auckland, as well as the local West Melton Market @ 254 every Saturday. New to these stores is the gourmet pizza and pie range, as well as products from a selection of small local businesses.

Take a seat Curling up on the sofa is one of life’s little pleasures, especially when it’s wet and windy outside. That’s why it’s important to have a great sofa, couch, settee or whatever you prefer to call it.

B

uying one is a significant investment so do some checking before you buy. Style preference is personal, but quality is essential regardless of style. Invest right and your sofa will last years.

Factors to take into account include usage, size and overall look of the room it will be in. Does it need to be family friendly, large enough for two to snuggle up on, double as a spare bed, or accommodate a fur baby?

Here are some suggestions from Metropol: • Decide on the type, for instance sectional, modular, sleeper, reclining, or maybe a futon. • Make sure the sofa doesn’t overpower the room or impede the flow of traffic, and that you can get it into the room. A couch should be about 2/3 the size of the wall it’s going to be against. • Look for one or two that will suit the style of the room, such as contemporary, mid-century modern, Scandinavian, Victorian, art deco, industrial etc. • Select the right fabric for its use. White doesn’t work well with children and pets. Leather is good for longevity. • Check the materials it is made from, especially if family members have allergies. • Look for a solid quality frame. Hardwood is good, pine tends to buckle after a few years.

Full circle There are four key principles that designers put into practice with every project they tackle. To help remember them, many rely on the acronym ‘CARP’ – which stands for contrast, alignment, repetition and proximity.

PAINT Walls in Resene Eighth Tana, timber floor finished in Resene Colorwood Whitewash, headboard in Resene Prairie Sand, round drum side tables in Resene Tana.

R

epetition is often the easiest to achieve, as this is simply done by repeating a colour, shape, form, pattern, motif, theme or texture within a space. The key is to use the thing you will be repeating at least three times, and to try and spread those occurrences throughout the room. The most notable feature of this space is the homemade headboard. If you or someone in your household is handy with a jig saw, the options for creating a custom headboard are practically endless. This headboard was created out

of a 15mm thick sheet of MDF that was first cut to fit a queen size bed – this started as 205cm wide by 155cm high. To make one yourself, first measure to find the centre and align the first circle there by tracing a large dinner plate. Then align the plate to the top corners and trace it again, and then trace it a fourth and fifth time along the top edge by centring the plate within the gaps between the three circles, making sure there is plenty of overlap. After carefully cutting around the edges of the curves, gently sand down any roughness using

progressively finer grades of sandpaper and then wipe the entire surface free of dust with a clean, dry cloth. Then, prime all sides of the MDF with a coat of Resene Quick Dry primer using a mini smooth surface paint roller. Once dry, apply two topcoats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel with another mini smooth surface paint roller, allowing the first coat to dry fully before applying the second. This headboard uses Resene Prairie Sand to make it an eyecatching standout and to tie into the colour of the cushion. The same colour is then carried on with small accessories in the room, so that it would create the repetition needed to make the hue the hero of the palette. You may not realise it at first glance, but the connections created through the repetition in this ‘well rounded’ space add to the bedroom’s restfulness by creating a sense of order – making it the perfect place to sink into and relax at the end of the long day.

Beautiful bathrooms

An important room or rooms in any home, bathrooms may be crisp, clean and functional if you want, have a more spa-like feel or any look you choose. Overseas trends this year include bringing the outdoors in, adding a touch of Hollywood glamour, and mixing natural materials to stunning effect.

Plants galore

Spa-like features Luxury features will help turn your bathroom into a spa-like retreat. Think luxury finishes such as detailed mosaic tiles, thick, euro style glass shower doors, minimal framing, stylish eye candy hardware and low maintenance granite, quartz or marble countertops with undermount sinks.

Wet rooms & walk-in showers

Mixing old & new

The biophilic approach and styling means you can use natural plants to create a calm, spalike sanctuary. Use as many or as few as your taste dictates, and don’t forget some gorgeous pots to stand them in.

Mixing textures & natural materials Combining colours, textures, and materials is proving popular after several years of plain solid colours. Textured wall coverings, textured tile, stone, and wood can be mixed and matched to create contemporary bathroom ambience.

Spacious walk-in showers and wet rooms are the order of the day, replacing baths in many instances. Baths are still a luxury and an eyecatching free-standing model is the popular choice.

Bathroom renovations are on the rise, and mixing old with new helps to create something truly unique. Try a traditional bath with a modern and sleek faucet, or period faucets with a modern sink.

Your bathroom solution With so many of us having been isolated at home during recent times, it’s likely that your mind has turned to renovations. After all, when you spend so much time at home, it’s easier to become frustrated with all the little issues that have bugging you for years.

AUTUMN,

nature’s

time for planting Since time began, the human race has followed the urge to plant in spring.

W

e seem to have an inbuilt clock that tells us it’s time to start pushing seeds and plants into the soil. But did you know that autumn is a brilliant time to plant, and if you look at nature you’ll see why. At this time of year, many plants drop seeds onto the soil, often in the form of fruit which rots down, revealing the seeds. The same thing happens with trees that also drop fruit or seed - eg oak trees drop acorns and sycamores drop winged seeds. Even some roses form hips in autumn and the round hips are actually seed capsules. And when grass goes to seed at this time of year, the first rain

produces a lovely lush coating of new grass in the bare patches; which is why autumn is the perfect time to plant new lawn seed. Planting now takes advantage of the perfect conditions for root development with warm damp soil, and through winter the roots continue to grow, even if the cold temperatures above ground don’t produce any leaf growth. At Terra Viva, we know how much the roots on roses grow through winter as we pot up the new season’s stock. And of course, autumn planting takes away the stress of keeping new plantings watered through a dry summer.

So, what to plant in autumn? Any trees can be planted, especially fruit trees, giving them time to develop and the best chance of producing fruit in the coming season. Perennials planted right now will give you a much better show in spring and summer than those planted later on. If you planted the same perennial now and another one in Spring, you’d be amazed how advanced the early planted one would be. Gardeners can even grow their own fertiliser by planting nitrogen-fixing green crops in autumn, using blue lupin seed, mustard, or the green manure crop mix; just dig the plants into the soil in mid-August and you will have given the soil a good dose of nitrogen. Obviously not all plants are available in autumn but it’s surprising how many varieties are in-stock year-round. So follow nature’s pattern and plant what you can now to get an accelerated start in spring. terraviva.nz Metropol 28 April, 2022 61

sustainable reality VISIONS BECOME

As informed customers, we know to look for the hallmarks of sustainability as well as for locally sourced and produced. In turn, manufacturers and merchandisers are aware that potential customers seek green credentials. This is all good news for planet Earth, but consumers do need to differentiate between businesses simply making a virtue-signalling token gesture for a competitive marketing edge, and those who really walk the talk.

M

aking a longstanding business greener is a different proposition than that for a startup. It requires dedication to the goal, financial investment, examination of existing systems, often significant upheaval, and gritty persistence in the face of opposing ideas and difficult or painful transitions. One venerable local company deserves huge accolades for committing to increasing sustainability both in the work it does, and the way it works. MF Turnbull has always been ahead of the curve with its longstanding reuse, repair, and recycle ethos. Year on year the team continue to reduce their environmental footprint. For more than 30 years they have been refinishing kitchens, furniture, and furnishings to give new life and reduce waste to landfill. In 2020, the company enhanced its green credentials, working with suppliers to start phasing out solvent-based products in favour of waterborne applications. “It’s so much better for the environment, and for our operations team,” says director Monique Turnbull. The latest step is installation of solar panels into the main building. In just four weeks they have saved the equivalent of 1.94 tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of planting three trees.

Monique is finding resurfacing kitchen cabinetry is more popular every year. “People realise they don’t need to do a full replacement, they can make a radical change, a shade adjustment, or simply freshen the existing colour. They save themselves money, and of course volume going to landfill,” she says. Resurfacing old furniture is a favourite. A client will bring in a piece with lovely proportions, beautifully made, but the appearance no longer suits. Refinished, the piece can anchor a new interior design scheme. Upholstered items with timber parts can be resurfaced and then the piece can be taken to your upholsterer for recovering. “We are currently doing a hotel in Queenstown. All the loose furniture such as bedside cabinets, desks and luggage racks are being refurbished,” says Monique. “They are coming up beautifully, it seems completely mad to think they could have been thrown away and replaced with new.” The team thrives on challenges and loves it when an unusual request comes in. “The test can lie in bringing out of people’s heads the vision that they have. By talking through the end goal using samples and options, the team is very good at turning visions into reality,” says Monique. www.mfturnbull.co.nz Metropol 28 April, 2022 63

In harmony with nature Any observer could be forgiven for thinking that this captivating home emerged fully formed from its landscape, so perfectly is it sited on the banks of the Wairarapa stream, cleverly harvesting the natural variations in light and disseminating them throughout all of the internal spaces.

n fact, extremely careful placement was required, allowing for an existing right of way, a 10m stream boundary setback, plus neighbouring homes. This delicate task rightfully fell to Common Ltd, the combined architectural practices of CoLab’s Tobin Smith, and Architect’s Creatives’ Kate and Daniel Sullivan. The result is stunning, a home that breathes in harmony with the stream, combined with planting that looks as if it was always meant to be that way. The design focuses the views from the living spaces towards the stream. The ground floor contains kitchen and living, as well as the future-proofed master suite which flows to the north facing courtyard. The variations in ceiling height play on the idea of embrace and release when transitioning through the house, but every volume draws light from the north east and west into the living spaces. The sleek black, white, natural wood colour palette, and clean lines are augmented with the owners’ treasures sourced on journeys, carefully placed to enhance the air of complete and secluded enchantment. www.common.nz

Stunning Cass Bay renovation Overlooking Ōtamahua/Quail Island, with the hills of Banks Peninsula in the distance, stands a newly renovated family home dedicated to connecting with its landscape and wider environment.

C

ass Bay House is an alteration and extension which cleverly terraces the building with the natural contours of the site, creating a strong connection with the neighbouring ocean and hills. Sited 20 metres from the coastline at Cass Bay, the design is the work of MC Architecture Studio, created from a desire by its owners for more flow.

Aside from the garage and decking, the gallery space is the only new structure, which uses the footprint of the previous garage. Windows are limited, allowing focus on the artworks. The brief to architect Max Capocaccia included a striking entranceway which now greets all-comers in the form of an art gallery portal, leading down into

the private residence below. Corten steel components were done by Hall Fabrication Ltd. “The gallery links you to the beautiful natural landscape. Coming from the street, I didn’t want an open feeling but instead a sense of closure, of entering into a gate and from there the building would open up to the sea,” he explains. www.mcarchstudio.nz

This is part of its long-term goal of making New Zealand carbon-neutral by 2050. While that goal won’t be a reality just yet, it does mean that, as of now, buyers of low or zero emission new or used vehicles will be eligible to receive a rebate. Basically, if you buy a car and it produces less than 146g/km of C02, based on Government guidelines, you qualify. By contrast, if you buy a vehicle considered by the Government to be a high emission vehicle, or one that produces more than 192g/km of C02, then you must pay a premium which is to be paid upon registration. However, buy a car which produces between 147g and 191g, and the price remains the same with no rebate or fee given or required. Well, that’s the short of it. It’s no wonder some of us went car buying crazy last month.

2022 Mercedes-Benz E63 S AMG 4MATIC Price: $241,400 plus ORC Engine: 4.0L Bi-Turbo V8 Transmission: AMG SPEEDSHIFT 9-Speed Automatic Drivetrain: 4MATIC All Wheel Drive Power: 450kW Torque: 850Nm 0 to 100km/h: 3.4 seconds Fuel Consumption: 12.3L/100km Wheels: 20-inch AMG Twin Spoke Alloys

W

ell for starters, it certainly has all the toned visual AMG muscles. Large 20inch twin spoke alloys also house optional carbon ceramic brakes and there are plenty of ducts and intakes to give a very aggressive stance. The AMG-ness continues inside. AMG embossed leather bucket seats hold you firmly in place and the suede and leather wrapped AMG wheel feels good in your hands. Naturally you get all the fruit you would think of, including the latest generation MBUX system and a barrage of onboard safety features. On start-up, that twin-turbo 4.0L V8 might be more subdued than its naturally aspirated predecessors, but a few blips of the throttle give you plenty of reassurance that this is an AMG product through and through. Flick up to Sport Plus, or even Race mode if you dare, and the E63 S is a terrific ground coverer. Keep that angry turbo V8 on song above 3000rpm and you just fly, with that angry bellow from those blasting exhaust tips giving you the best soundtrack. The Burmester sound system is great, but it will never match the theatre of an AMG V8. While the ride is certainly more comfortable than I was expecting, you still feel the bumps to some degree and there is a smattering of tyre roar from the Pirelli rubber. Flicking up through those nine forward gears yourself is great but there is a slight delay on the way down. However, once you start to bury the throttle and start to eat up the corners, you forget these things pretty quickly. The E63 can eat up corners and sports the kind of responses usually reserved for pinsharp sports cars. In Race mode, the steering weights up beautifully and changing direction is almost telepathic. This is a seriously exciting car to drive hard and yet amazingly docile when you have finished clowning around and just want to cruise home. The E63 S AMG will set you back $241,400 plus ORC. It certainly isn’t cheap, especially when those optional carbon brakes are $15,900 a pop. However, it still manages to be a seriously capable performance saloon of epic proportions. If this is end of an era, then the new E63 S AMG is one heck of a final encore.

metropol drive

The AMG division of Mercedes-Benz is changing. With the incorporation of electric drive for upcoming models, their rip-snorting V8 powerhouses could soon very well be a thing of the past. Therefore, could this E63 S AMG be the swansong of the AMG V8 saloon as we know it?

BEN SAYS: Likes: • The sheer delivery of power • V8 engine note • Its menacing stance Dislikes: • Paddle down-shifting could be more immediate • The price • Not much else

AZARIAH SAYS: Likes: • Love the V8 noise • Nice interior • Looks great Dislikes: • A bit of tyre roar • The front seats weren’t super comfortable • The ride was a bit firm

The term “brave and bold” could almost be tailored to suit the new Kia Sportage. Whereas the previous generation was a decent package, it wasn’t what you might call dynamic to look at. The latest Sportage counteracts this by giving a striking, forward-thinking design. However, what is it like under the skin?

T

he range starts at $39,990 plus ORC for the base LX Petrol and tops out at $62,990 for the flagship X-Line Diesel. My test car was the entry level LX Diesel at $46,990. The interior has been given an overhaul to match its striking chops. It’s a very nice place to be with a great air of refinement all around. The LX Diesel gives you Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Forward Collision Avoidance, Parking Sensors front and rear, Reversing Camera with a very clear display, LED Daytime Running Lights and

an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system all as standard. However, it would have been nice to see Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and Sat Nav too. On the move the Sportage’s turbo diesel four pot feels more refined than before. Ride comfort is pretty decent and ample ground clearance of 181mm means the Sportage bodes well when going gravelly. A few days with the new Sportage LX Diesel provided a good taster of what Kia has on the menu over the coming months.

For Rana, bespoke European vehicles are a way of life. Having trained as an auto technician in 2007, his passion moved up a gear when he and his wife Swati became custodians of KBL Automotive.

BL Limited was founded in 1976 by Kevin and Maxine Burt as Christchurch’s definitive Mercedes-Benz garage. KBL Automotive eventually expanded to cater for other European makes before the couple retired in 2019. Rana, an MBA in Business from Massey University, and his wife, who trained as a dentist, have a vast portfolio of successful businesses behind them. With Rana’s deep knowledge and passion towards European brands, he has been an ideal choice to continue their legacy. Aside from continuing the highly sought-after mechanical/electrical services and repairs for which KBL have become renowned for, Rana was approached by his customers to privately import bespoke European vehicles. What started as a few cars grew into a fully-fledged European Car dealership in 2020. EuroHub Cars at 452 St. Asaph Street gives buyers the same level of transparency and quality service which emulates the core of KBL. Later in 2021 the OneHub Automotive workshop was added, catering to all vehicles to feature as a part of Rana and Swati’s vision of a one-stop hub for all manner of motorists. One would definitely agree the future of KBL Automotive has never looked brighter. kblautomotive.co.nz

aving recently rediscovered my long lost passion for fitness, when E-Mega Store offered me the latest Scott Silence Evo bike to trial - I couldn’t refuse. I’ve done a lot of biking in my time, but only dabbled with e-bikes. Mainly the point-and-squirt ones on which you don’t even need to pedal. But the Silence Evo isn’t one of those - if you don’t pedal, you don’t move. The motor is there to make pedalling a whole lot easier. There are five modes of assistance available: Off, Eco, Tour, Sport, and Turbo - each offering increasing pedalling speeds and levels of motorised assistance, but conversely reduced distances as the battery drains faster. Being a bit of a speed freak, I spent much of my commuting time in Turbo and Sport. Both modes offer a top speed of 45kph, Supernova M99 mini, but I did get Turbo up Rear Tail Light to 49kph before the Available in medium, computer physically large and XL slowed me down. a non-electric bike, I was never drenched with sweat at the end of the ride. But best of all, I saved a very welcome $80 in petrol each week (2.0L Volvo on 95 octane), plus a further $30-$40 from the daily coffee I could no longer buy on the way to work! The benefits didn’t end there though. I consider myself a reasonably fit guy, but after three days of commuting I had lost 2kg in weight, and after a couple of weeks I was definitely feeling the benefits of working those large muscle groups more. Most main roads in Christchurch have a cycle lane, and they are an absolute Godsend for cycle commuters, as things can get noticeably tight when they aren’t present. Rush-hour drivers can be unaware of their surroundings, and as a cyclist, especially one travelling at similar speeds to the cars, I had to be super switched-on. The Scott Silence Evo has unlimited gears, a full-time front and back LED light with brake light, a very loud horn, disc brakes, high quality Bosch motor and belt drive. It even has a built in security lock. The Kiox onboard computer syncs with a mobile app and can give you directions if required. All this technology, yet it was the simplest thing to use. It definitely converted me into an e-bike commuter, and I’m going to be sad when I have to hand it back to the helpful folk at E-Mega Store.
