Stroke of luck Dean Harrison is one of the luckiest people in Christchurch, perhaps even the country. But he doesn’t see it that way. In fact, he sees all his success as a direct result of ‘applied optimism’.
A
life philosophy centred around the concept of the glass being half full, Dean is all about visualising the positive outcomes he wants to invite into his life. Whether that’s carparks becoming available upon his arrival, or finding wallets during the course of his day – he’s found 63 now, though assures he has returned every single one – his sales statistics, his fishing fortune and, more recently, his weight loss. But perhaps even more powerful is the fact that he has even taken out the more than $2m jackpot in the Lotto... and predicted it would happen. Dean had done 36 different jobs before he “fell” into his current role, which he has been in for 22 years now. The Mediaworks consultant was recognised recently for selling $10m of advertising within his current role (and has sold close to $15m in total throughout his career). “My natural
inclination is ‘the glass is half empty’, but through mindfulness, I remind myself to be positive,” Dean says. “A quiet mantra of mine for years has been the Jim Rohn quote, ‘For things to change, you have to change’. Working on myself is a constant ongoing process.” Belief, he says, sets the scene of your life. “What we believe to be true, will be true. I believed I was overweight and unhealthy so to change that, I had to believe it. The same principle applies to income and business; what we truly believe and expect to get, we get!” He has lost more than 20kg in just three months. “A good friend said to me, ‘you can be an example or you can be a warning’ and I chose to be an example,” Dean says. “I have been totally focused, with only a little cheating to get those results,” he laughs. “I had high blood pressure and was on Losec for a long time; now my health is
the best it has been in years and I’ve got so much energy,” (these results are not typical and individual results will vary). “For me, managing weight is not about the perfect body mass index (BMI). It’s about being able to stand in front of the mirror naked and feel good about the image that looks back at you.” It’s the products from global nutrition company Herbalife Nutrition that he attributes his weight loss success to. So much so, that he’s now selling their products. In fact, he’s making himself a Herbalife Nutrition shake when I catch up with him. But it’s not about selling products, it’s about sharing good nutrition, he says. “Herbalife is about nutrition, not dieting. It’s more an evolution than a revolution. In New Zealand, the statistics are at an all-time high – over 70 percent of us are overweight or obese. This is an opportunity for people to take control of their health in a positive way for their future.” Dean has also played an important role in fundraising within the community, starting a Child Cancer fundraiser with his ex-wife which raised more than $2m before he was introduced to Koru Care, helping to raise a similar amount for that charity. “I’m in a privileged position to be able to give back and it would feel almost dishonest to not do that, so I’m currently looking into what I can do in that direction in the future.” Metropol October 11, 2018 9

enterprise gets the opportunity to step up and show leadership, it should. Statistics tell us that when kitchen cupboards at home are empty, so too are the classrooms. “Our mission at Foodstuffs is to feed the South Island, and anything we can do to help another enterprise also committed to doing this deserves our support – and yours.” Steve invites businesses big and small across the city to join them in supporting this organisation to feed our hungry children. Foodstuffs, the company that owns the PAK’nSAVE, New World and Four Square brands provides its test kitchen free of charge as a base for Eat My Lunch. It has purchased lunches for staff and has encouraged its people to volunteer time in the mornings to help prepare the lunches. “We were overwhelmed at the number of people that passionately want to be involved.” Each day, across New Zealand, 91 schools are given lunches to distribute to 2,700 kids. Eat My Lunch is close to giving one million lunches. In just three years of operation, this is a business that is making a difference, however it’s your business that will enable it to continue to do good. Visit www. eatmylunch.nz.

he concept is simple – get online, buy a lunch, which is delivered to your workplace and in return a nutritious lunch is delivered to a Christchurch child in need. Eat My Lunch, a national social enterprise opened its doors in the city recently, launching its buy-one, give-one model in the South Island for the first time. What might be the simple and affordable purchase of a lunch for your team, could alleviate the hunger of child at one of the nine local schools. Currently in Christchurch, Eat My Lunch is making 270 lunches each Monday and Thursday. The enterprise hopes to increase the number of days it operates, but this will be driven by demand for purchased lunches from the Canterbury community. Before the arrival of the national business, this gap was serviced by Fill Their Lunchbox. Due to financial pressure, it closed, providing the opportunity for Eat My Lunch to step in and continue with the high demand social service. It approached Foodstuffs South Island, which agreed to help it transition into the Canterbury area. stan walke hits the high note
It’s been the biggest year of Stan Walker’s life; he has fought and won the battle against stomach cancer. Now he’s getting back to what he loves, with a 12-date New Takeover tour that will see him performing across New Zealand’s main centres throughout October and November.
12 October 11, 2018 Metropol
You’ve had a pretty intense journey in recent times with stomach cancer. How difficult has your journey back to health been? I guess it was pretty hard at times, but it all went by really fast and I’ve never felt better, to be honest. When it was all happening, it was hard, but it kind of happened really quickly. Now I’m skinny, fit and healthy; I feel real good. Is this journey something you’re able to channel into your performance? I guess so. I think I’m more on fire than I have been ever before, for my career, my goals, my flame has been reignited even more. It’s all part of the fuel for performing. I’m more motivated and determined and better than I was before as a singer. In the beginning you feared never being able to sing again, how important is singing to you and how would that outcome have affected you? Singing, it’s everything, it’s my beall, I’m a singer before anything, so it would have affected everything, my whole life. Thankfully my voice came back stronger and better than before. How much of a difficult decision was it to share your journey through your documentary? Not really, I was excited to share that experience. I just wanted to share with people how it really is going through that sort of thing.
How has this experience changed you? I’m skinnier, that’s the biggest change! I can wear anything I want to now (he laughs). It has made me more passionate, more excited, more on fire than I ever have been before. You released a self-titled EP in March, can you tell us what this album meant to you? Those are songs that I had written a long time ago, one I had written 11 years ago, four songs were from four years ago; they were all songs that were sitting there and meant something special to me, from ‘breakthrough’ points in my life. I wasn’t intending to do an EP; I wasn’t intending to do anything, but it made sense to have my own music on the documentary and that ended up being a really positive thing; it became what it became. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? A lot of work; I love working, love being busy, love getting tired from chasing my dreams, love making music, films, working on new projects, things that stretch me as a creative person and an artist. How does it feel to have such a strong and diverse following across many ages and to have such a big fan base that are following your journey and what you’re up to? I always find it interesting that people follow me. I am really grateful. I think a lot of times, I’m me and who I am 24/7 and I’m like really? I’m really grateful and chuffed at the same time. There are a lot of people that have followed me since the early days, since my Idol days. I’ve changed so much since Idol; my music has changed, even this next season of music and film, it’s completely different to the last, yet people follow my journey and I get new fans along the way. I find it really interesting but I’m really grateful.

interim. From mid-December until late-January, much of New Zealand is partying or at the beach. Decisions about important issues such as marketing communications strategies, new websites, social media, branding... often don’t land on the boardroom table until February, with actions regularly delayed until March. Add it all up and that’s a quarter of the year that has drifted by without any action on key issues to drive business. Priority Communications rarely promises it can deliver a new website or launch a communications campaign in the last few weeks before Christmas, rather it encourages clients to start conversations early and get decisions signed off at board level before mid-December. That way, you can start the New Year fresh and focused with some of your essential work already underway or in the pipeline. If you are wondering whether your company is at the right stage to boost its marketing and communications, there are a few things to consider and the company is always very upfront with clients about them. If you’re too busy and using all of your resources, you may not have capacity to add more work. Conversely, if you are on the verge of shutting up shop, marketing communications are unlikely to pull you through, even if you have a brilliant strategy. The very best time to book an appointment with Priority Communications is when you have a strong workflow but there is room to service new clients. The planning process alone for a marketing communications strategy is useful as it makes you take a fresh look at who you are; what you have to offer; who you are trying to attract to your business; and the pros and cons of various communication tools. Recently, the company took some of its own advice and has been marketing to some new people in new places to help grow the business. Aside from attracting some wonderful new clients, it has opened their eyes to a world of fresh opportunities.

out & about Tim and Isabelle Weston and their daughter Adaline, 3.
Preserving a legacy It’s easy to see Isabelle Weston’s unwavering commitment, vision and determination mirrors that of her legendary motorcycle designer father, the late John Britten.
T
he Christchurch business woman and her husband Tim have recently finished a massive three-year renovation project of the Brittens’ historic family home in Matai Street, severely damaged in the 2011 earthquakes. From the moment you step through the street facing oversized coal-black doors you can see the couple have achieved something truly special and a dream home to be proud of. But turning their dream into a reality was painstaking work and one big “juggling act”, says Tim, who sold his insurance brokerage business half way through the build to take on the role of project manager. “I was here two to three times a day so it wasn’t fair on my clients,” Tim says. Throwing himself into the project, he lost 7kg and plenty of sleep. “I get a lot more sleep now it’s finished,” he laughs. A derelict stable block, John Britten
16 October 11, 2018 Metropol
By Sarah Jarvis purchased the property in the late 70s and refurbished it into a home for wife Kirsteen and their three children (Isabelle, Sam and Jess). It’s also where the mechanical engineer designed and built his worldrecord-setting V1000 motorbike. He died at age 45 from skin cancer in 1995. The family were forced to abandon the home when it sustained serious damage in the 2011 earthquakes, and shortly after Kirsteen moved out to Northbrook to live with Isabelle and Tim, taking only salvageable items from the crippled home. That looked to be the end of the Britten estate as discussions around demolishing it began. “Izzie turned to me and said we should buy it,” Tim recalls. Unsure at first, he quickly changed his mind knowing the importance and special history of the home. “A renovation project of this magnitude wasn’t at all on our radar but we couldn’t bear to see it pulled down
or sold. If it had been sold we would have lost it forever,” Tim says. Stripping the house back to its bones was a sombre affair as the true picture of the house’s condition became apparent. The house was severely water damaged as it sat vacant since 2011 and a harsh Canterbury winter last year only added to its decline. Construction really kicked into high gear in March last year. “There’s been so many people helping us, family, friends and we’ve had 15 to 20 tradespeople on site daily,” Tim adds. Working long hours, the couple grew close to those working with them, with one tradie inviting them to his wedding. While the building’s footprint stayed the same there were a few new additions. “We worked hard to keep it as original as possible,” Tim says. A magnificent feature of the building is a steel and glass atrium taking centre-stage,
complete with swimming pool and tropical garden. All the rooms have been immaculately decorated, furnished to the highest standard. They officially moved in at the beginning of September, just in time to celebrate their daughter Adaline’s third birthday. However, the joy of moving in was slightly tinged with heartbreak with Isabelle revealing they had lost a baby at 20 weeks.
We couldn’t bear to see it pulled down or sold. If it had been sold we would have lost it forever.” Determined to have more children to help fill the seven bedroom home, the couple say seeing Adaline playing in her room is enough reward… for now. Isabelle, a property manager, says their decision to operate a B&B from their home allows guests to share the family’s unique story. Last week their story was featured on the opening series of Grand Design NZ. “We are privileged and so happy to be able to tell dad’s story and having our home appear on Grand Design NZ was a great way to catalogue what we’ve done,” she says.

The affordable luxury retirement accommodation is unique, with only 29 units. “Because we’re so small, everyone gets to know each other.” Vanessa and husband Daryn have run the McDougall Avenue rest home since early 2016. Daryn sees to the marketing, but on Friday he presents the news, sparking jovial debate and banter – and if time permits, an afternoon outing. Jana, a diversional therapist, coordinates the activities and was recently trained to teach Chair Chi – that’s tai chi for seniors. There is never a dull moment. Residents can rent a room, purchase under occupational rights agreement,

The ambience is of yesteryear, evident from the Cecil Wood-designed architecture to the grand piano in the dining room – where the blackboard menu offers two deserts a day. Within walking distance to Merivale Mall, it’s convenient to shop with new-found friends. Two residents are a spritely 101 and staff stay a long time. And there’s Kizzy, the resident 16-year-old tabby who has her own medication chart. Wi-Fi is throughout the facility, and families from all over the world can check in and follow on Facebook. A
fter 40 years in the law mostly at one larger Christchurch firm, Lawrence finds the relaxed and friendly environment at Kannangara Thomson refreshing. Having spent a significant part of his working life as a lawyer in suburban offices, Lawrence is a lawyer with a broad knowledge base across a wide range of areas of law. He assists clients with all of the following – the sale and purchase of residential and commercial property, business sales and purchases, asset protection and estate planning involving the use of family trusts, wills and enduring powers of attorney, company law matters and commercial leasing. Growing up as someone overtly Chinese but as Kiwi as anyone else born in New Zealand, life wasn’t always easy for Lawrence. Born in the 1950s to a New Zealand mother of Chinese descent and a father born in China, he experienced occasional prejudice. As a child in Christchurch, Lawrence attended St Michael’s School where, within the school grounds he was largely insulated from that prejudice which he says he experienced more outside of the school grounds. He then attended Christchurch Boys’ High School before
attending Canterbury University, graduating in 1978 with a law degree. His early years in practice coincided with a new wave of Chinese immigrants, many of whom did not speak much English. One of the benefits of growing up in a Chinese/Kiwi family was that Lawrence learned conversational Cantonese, something which his clients were extremely grateful of in the late 1970s and 1980s. To this day, Lawrence retains the ability to converse in Cantonese which is of value to his large Chinese client base. Being at Kannangara Thomson has bought Lawrence back to his ethnic and legal roots. The firm’s byline ‘We Speak Your Language’ signifies the fact that there are as many as nine different languages spoken in the firm, but also the fact that the lawyers at Kannangara Thomson cut through all the traditional legal jargon lawyers are renowned for and explain matters to clients in plain English. This is something which Lawrence finds refreshing and which, when added to the relaxed and congenial working environment, tells him that the move was a good one for him and his clients. Lawrence’s clients and former clients are invited to contact him on 03 377 4421 or email lawrence.wong@ktlaw.co.nz Metropol October 11, 2018 23

Evolution of a dream For Nicky Falloon, Evolution School of Dance was the realisation of a dream and the blossoming of a life-long love affair with dance, which continues today.
E
volution School of Dance was created by Nicky to give children and young adults throughout Christchurch and beyond a unique chance to realise their dreams of learning and performing ballet, jazz and contemporary dance, and above all, having fun. The company runs a wide range of ballet, jazz and contemporary classes to suit all levels, from beginners to experienced, out of locations in Cashmere and Papanui. Nicky and fellow teachers Azariah Heswall and part-time teacher Angie Longman, have been trained by The Royal Academy of Dance, one of the most prestigious ballet organisations in the world. The level of experience shared between them results in a very
professional teaching environment. It is through this combination of knowledge and experience that thousands of students have passed through Evolution over the years; many have gone on to perform with some of the world’s leading ballet and dance companies. “Many of our students have grown up through the school, starting as young as four or five and emerging as young adults,” Nicky says. “They are able to learn and grow their love of dance, something they can take with them throughout their lives.” Every year, students also have the unique opportunity to showcase what they have learned in Evolution’s Annual Dance Show. “The show takes place at
the Aurora Centre of Performing Arts in Burnside at the end of the term two school holidays. Students love it because it gives them the rare chance to perform on stage in front of family and friends, making the highlight of their year,” Nicky says. Therefore, if you, or your child has the burning desire to learn, or perfect the elegance and grace of ballet, the swing and frivolity of jazz, or the modern and upbeat style of contemporary dancing, Nicky, Azariah and Angie invite all new comers to join in, make new friends, have fun and shine as an integral part of the legacy of Evolution School of Dance. For more information, find Evolution School of Dance Christchurch on Facebook or call Nicky on 021 244 4131.

fashion Flag the fashion rules Wear something that makes your heart sing,” Zebrano’s Christchurch Manager Michelle Carter says. Her advice for Cup Day is to dress confident and brave, feel proud and get creative.
W
ith Zebrano’s edgy and directional fashion, there are no rules – instead resisting to conform to any particular fashion. The range is unbelievable, in all-embracing styles and sizes from 14 to 24. “We encourage people to dress to suit their personality. Every single body is different and fashion doesn’t need to fix or change – we just like everyone to feel good.” The spectrum of style is from gorgeously gothic to feminine and flirty – in beautiful, touchable fabrics. Exclusive European High-end brands include names such as Moyuru from Japan, and Rundholz Black from Germany. “We all know our stock really well. Our buying process is very thorough and considered when choosing new ranges. It’s never just about current
fashion pieces.” Some exclusive New Zealand labels include Maaike, in stunning fabrics its designs are collaborated by local and international artists, La La (lost and led astray), Jason Lingard, Curate by Trelise Cooper, and timeless, quality Chocolat. OBI and OBI Black are of creative design and texture. Zebrano’s online look book outline’s each designer’s story. “When shopping on the website, you can ring us anytime with questions, come in to try it on, or we can order something in for you.” Visit www.zebrano.co.nz for Cup Week inspiration, or pop into Zebrano’s gorgeous art deco building, with parking just outside the door at 169 Victoria Street, Christchurch. Merivale’s Denim Heaven Denizens of Merivale will be excited to hear that Death by Denim is opening its second Christchurch store in the Quinns building on Papanui Road.
O
wners Kirsty and Scott Malcolm, along with new store manager Mandy Rowe, are thrilled to open the lifestyle boutique in mid-October. Kirsty says their philosophy of old school customer service will carry through to this new venture, where the pleasure of using the five senses in your shopping experience is paramount (yes, every taste is catered for, as Kirsty and Scott love to offer a glass of champagne to clients at weekends). Kirsty has been working with denim since she was 17 and the specialty service of fitting jeans to any body shape is her art and passion. Recognising that our bodies change shape at different life stages, Kirsty loves to help clients find the fit and style that makes them feel great. She says, “Come for the denim – stay for the tees, shirts, dresses, ponchos, vests, skirts, shoes, accessories…” You get the idea. Kirsty says they stock items at a range of price points and the selection of labels is vast. Loved Californian brand Johnny Was is exclusive to Death by Denim in Christchurch, while the range of ‘John Lennon’ shirts would make a stylish statement under a race day suit. Death by Denim offers not only stunning lifestyle clothing and accessories, but also shopping as genuine retail therapy. Enjoy Death By Denim Merivale opening mid-October, or visit the current store – BNZ Centre, Cashel Street and find them at www.deathbydenim.co.nz.

Look fabulous not fake Remember a few little wrinkles or imperfections don’t make you less attractive! The problem with chasing perfection with cosmetic treatments is that it can lead to an overfilled or fake look. Cosmetic treatments should only ever subtly enhance your natural beauty.
fashion
I
t is important to look at all areas of the face when thinking about doing cosmetic treatments as ageing occurs everywhere – not just isolated areas! Amazing lips can look completely overdone if the tissue surrounding them is saggy. It is important to find a cosmetic doctor who takes a whole-face approach so that you can achieve a natural look. A good cosmetic clinician will help guide you past unnecessary procedures and choose the right treatment for you to refresh your natural beauty. Natural contours can be restored using dermal fillers and wrinkles can be softened using Botulinum Toxin. Different treatments address different signs of ageing so often a combination approach will actually give you a more natural look. Love the skin you are in! Look after your skin with quality skincare and in-clinic treatments to boost skin quality such as IPL( to remove sun-damage and redness), Ulthera ( High Intensity Ultrasound for tissue tightening), Radiofrequency needling (for skin tightening and collagen induction)and professional skin peels. Good skin that is hydrated, smooth and luminous with good elasticity is essential to a naturally beautiful face. The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic prides itself on its personalised treatment plans. Dr Brigid Lee does all the injectable treatments and is a member of the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine.

reasons to love

How did Twenty-seven Names come about? Anj and I have been best friends since primary school and we grew up in Wellington. Anj studied fashion design, while I studied fine art in Dunedin and while we were there, we decided we wanted to start a label together. The first collection we put together was while I was in my final semester at art school. We started small and named the brand as a homage to the 27 people who helped us get the label off the ground. What is your design philosophy? We design together, so we are very good at communicating about what we like. One of us has to absolutely love the garment if it’s going to make the final cut. We aim to make clothes which make women feel special and inspired positively to make the most of their day, whatever they’re doing. We love being playful, so there is often a fun and humorous aspect to each collection. You’ve got a huge and growing profile now, how difficult has it been getting established in New Zealand? It’s just taken time and effort. We started our business over 10 years ago and we’ve had a retail arm for the last five years. Anj and I worked really hard at the beginning (still do!) to establish the label, and now we have an amazing little team that help us make our dreams come true. We still do our own sales appointments with our retailers, which is so lovely as so many of them are great friends, some we’ve now worked with for nearly a decade. We’ve been lucky to have our collections at Showroom 22 since our first year too, so we have many people to thank when we think about how far we’ve come over the years. Who have been some of your biggest design inspirations? I studied sculpture at art school, and one
thing we always go back to are some of our favourite artists for inspiration: Tracey Emin, Jenny Holzer, Sylvie Fleury, Gillian Wearing, Rineke Dijkstra, Vanessa Beecroft, and Barbara Kruger to name a few.
fashion
Metropol catches up with Rachel to discuss the brand’s stylish evolution.
How do you describe your latest collection? We have two latest collections; in store is ‘Yada Yada’, Summer 2018/19, which draws inspiration from our favourite TV character of all time, Elaine Benes from Seinfeld. Each piece has a little bit of us and a little bit of Elaine in there. We have designed signature prints, notably our meadow floral, in which you can find the perfect summer dress; there’s something for everyone. Secondly, we have just shown our Winter 19 range ‘A Cat May Look at a Queen’, at New Zealand Fashion Week. This collection is set to hit stores in February and is a fantastical play on 70’s silhouettes and floral prints, and also re-introduces our signature cat print from the archive; now replete with balloons and friends. What are some of your favourite pieces from the collection? From Yada Yada, I think my favourite at the moment is the Elaine dress; it’s quintessentially Twenty-seven Names, and such an easy piece to throw on and feel a million bucks in. My fave look from Fashion Week has to be the Becky Jacket and China Pants. Again, I dare you to put on this ensemble and not feel amazing – our signature floral print on French-printed tencel, beat that! What do the next 12 months have in store for you? We have so much on the boil at the moment, this is a bit of a ‘watch this space’. We have exciting things up our sleeve for both retail and design. We are also in the process of fitting out our workroom. Making a beautiful space always leads to better designs and feelgood vibes. We already love coming to work, but this makes it all the more enjoyable!

etallics transform fashion into a dazzling style statement and it’s not just ‘going out’ clothing that is making its metallic mark, with puffer jackets and sneakers emulating the latest looks. Its prevailing popularity in the style stakes suggests the shine won’t be rubbing off any time soon, which is rather an exciting prospect, when it comes to our inner-magpies. So how do you make the most of metallics? With their ability to reflect light, metallics can enhance facial imperfections. So if you want to take the attention away from your face, incorporate metallics through skirts, trousers or smaller metallic details. Stick to one metallic piece, rather than mixing and matching, pairing metallic pieces with simple and minimal pieces. An all-metallic look can have you looking like Saturday Night Fever. Keep accessories and makeup minimal too, allowing your metallic look to stand on its own. It’s time to shine!

Beautiful smiles beyond teeth There has been an exciting development at Duxton Dental to give you a spring in your step and a smile on your face this summer.
D
entists Christine Duxbury and Hayley Hall have both been extensively trained in the use of Botulinum Toxin (Botox) as a muscle relaxant that can be used reliably for both dental and cosmetic indications. Traditionally, lines between the eyes (frown lines), on the forehead and around the eyes (crows’ feet) have been the most commonly treated for cosmetic reasons. However, the number of new uses for these facial injectables has expanded substantially and now includes other areas of direct importance for dentists. Chronic tooth grinding, headaches and smile issues, due to undesired muscle overactivity, can be treated simply and noninvasively through the use of Botox. It is interesting to know that worldwide, dentists are the providers of choice for treatments with Botox –

it makes sense when you think about their day-to-day work and facial anatomy knowledge. Training and experience has shown Hayley and Christine that they can provide natural looking results, using a combination of skin rejuvenation and facial injectables such as Botox. Duxton Dental is also fortunate to have a qualified beauty therapist on staff. The goal at Duxton Dental is not about making someone look completely different or 20 years younger, but as one of their patients says, “It is about making them look like they have had a fantastic holiday”. If you are interested in finding out about these treatments please contact Duxton Dental’s staff for a free consultation on 03 348 5488 or email info@duxtondental.co.nz.

A sense of beauty I was quite stunned. I hadn’t even considered we might be in the running for the major award.” That was Jess Telfer’s reaction when she learned that Cocoon Beauty and Day Spa, the Rangiora salon she co-owns with her mother Sally, had won the 2018 Beauty Sense Award for Stockist of the Year.

eauty Sense Ltd is a leading supplier of product to the professional beauty industry in New Zealand, supplying 450 individual stockists nationwide. Every two years Beauty Sense holds awards for excellence in the beauty industry and the Stockist of the Year Award is its highest level of recognition. “There are a number of criteria on which a salon is judged,” Jess says. “Particularly important to us at Cocoon and a major focus is investing in staff education and training. We want all members of our team to reach their highest potential. We also put a great deal of effort into improving our marketing and presence on social media.
I ensure that our Facebook page and Instagram are updated regularly with new and interesting content about our treatments and the products that we use.” Cocoon is no newcomer to winning awards however, having received multiple industry and supplier awards since 2011. “We enter awards to keep us improving on what we do. They are a chance to revisit our business plan to make sure we are on the right track and they are also great for team morale.” To celebrate the win Cocoon is rewarding you. He understands that not only function, but beautiful form begins with these natural fundamentals. “If dentistry is perfected on a microscopic level, cosmetic improvements will follow naturally.” Dr Kao prefers a tailored approach, with a rigorous commitment to bespoke solutions and positive outcomes. Bio emulation methods mean his treatments follow the natural groove and ridge of teeth with the understanding that each has a function, leading to personalised results. Regularly training around the world in the latest techniques, his holistic approach
encompasses the reality that an incorrect or worn bite pressures the facial muscles that scaffold from jaw to temple, creating wrinkles. ‘Aesthetically pleasing’ does not equate perfection however, and in Dr Kao’s practice, the smiles he fashions retain character. He collaborates with master dental technicians from around the world to create bespoke veneers, crowns and bridges. Dr Kao’s composite fillings maintain the original, natural colours, contours and even the staining of teeth. For Dr Kao, general dentistry, orthodontics and facial aesthetics including fillers and Botox, along with his natural philosophy, are his passion. He adores the process of ensuring harmonious interplay between all the factors that create the best yet most natural looking you. Visit www.boutiquedental.nz.

he cosmetic approach to lips is subject to fashion trends and swings between the very full ‘Angelina Jolie’ pout and those seeking more natural looking volume. “We find nowadays most women don’t necessarily want their lips to be the focus of attention,” says Face Value’s Dr Philip Frost. “They want something that blends and harmonises with the rest of their features, subtly accentuating their mouth without screaming ‘overdone’. In this way, lip augmentation has become a very customisable procedure; it’s all about working with your unique features to create a look designed especially for you.” Lip augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures carried out at Face Value and involves injecting dermal filler into the lips to give them a youthful plumpness and add more definition. As well as changing the lip size for those who desire bigger lips, this procedure can be used to correct a host of concerns including wrinkles around the lip area and redefining the cupid’s bow. It’s about balance and symmetry as well as volume. As with all cosmetic procedures carried out by Dr Frost, it should complement the overall appearance of your face, be age appropriate and not be immediately obvious. ith a focus on superior natural, toxin-free products, Bella Tran opened the unique salon a year ago. Specialising in nails and lashes, waxing treatments are also available, as well as henna brows and lash lifts. One of the new nail treatments on the menu is the ‘Sun Kissed Skin’ pedicure or manicure, which is finished with an organic cacao and coconut nourish oil massage, to achieve a beautiful bronze glow. A gorgeous new product, the coconut and lime massage oil candle, is formulated to melt into a nourishing blend of warm body oil at the perfect temperature. Stepping into the calm, it’s a relaxing oasis from bustling Papanui Road. The clean, natural oak décor reflects the
salon’s dedication to natural products – with no chemical aroma like traditional nail salons. Labella uses only ‘8-free’ nail polishes, such as Butter London, and is Canterbury’s only professional salon with staff trained in the SNS nail system, an amazing acrylic alternative. “This is our most popular treatment,” Bella says. “It lasts up to three weeks, is easier to remove and encourages nail growth rather than damaging them.” Bella takes hygiene very seriously, using a medical-grade autoclave sterilisation system to sanitise tools after each treatment. “This is one of the things I’m very proud of, along with my team, who truly love what they do.” Phone 03 352 9789 or book online at www.labella.co.nz.

ssociate Professor Louise Hull will be splitting her time between Australia and her hometown Christchurch to take up her new role with Genea Oxford Fertility. “I’m really looking forward to supporting South Island couples to grow their families. Fertility issues can be incredibly complex and require a really strong science-based approach, as well as a caring and supportive environment for people,” she says. Dr Hull moved to Australia after graduating from medical school at the University of Otago and completing a PhD in endometriosis at Cambridge University in the UK. She gained a Certificate of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI) through the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) and went on to become an Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide. Her extensive knowledge and passion for fertility led her to co-found the Fertility SA IVF Unit in Adelaide. Genea Oxford Fertility General Manager Catherine France says
Dr Hull has achieved at the very highest level throughout her international career. “It is incredibly rare to find a fertility specialist who also has such a great depth of knowledge about endometriosis. We look forward to having her on our team and working with our patients.” Genea Oxford Fertility, through its partnership with Oxford Women’s Health, offers consultations throughout the South Island including Christchurch, Invercargill and Queenstown. It uses a unique model that blends the best of science, technology and patient care to significantly improve a couple’s ability to have a healthy baby. A Fertility Options Evening will be held at the Genea Oxford Fertility clinic on 18 October, where you can meet Dr Hull and the Genea Oxford team and learn more about the variety of different fertility treatments available. It is free to attend and registrations can be made at www.geneaoxford.co.nz. You can also call 0800 377 894 for a free nurse consultation or to make an appointment.

athy and fellow Christchurch-based musicians Barry Brinson (piano/keyboard), Michael Davis (bass) and Doug Brush (drums) return for two shows at Labour Weekend, following their warm reception at Arrowtown Spring Arts Festival 2017. The quartet is excited to be performing together again, and Cathy promises that lovers of both jazz and classical genres will be entertained. “The audience comes along on a journey with us,” she says. “We give music a makeover, taking people’s favourites and infusing them with fresh inspiration and rhythmic drive.” Reflecting her passion for music and dedication to her craft, Cathy has been learning to play the viola especially for the southern shows. This means she will be able to play ‘Tango,’ which is a movement from Bolling’s Suite for Violin and Jazz Piano Trio. Acquiring this new skill is no mean feat: the viola is larger than the violin and playing it is more physically taxing on the fingers. Cathy says the concert programme includes Vivaldi’s ‘Spring’ from the Four Seasons – “we’re going to have a bit of fun with that” – and C.P.E. Bach’s ‘Solfeggietto.’ “People might not know that title, but they’ll recognise it when they hear it.” CJQ perform at The Rippon Hall (Wanaka) on Saturday 20 October and at Thomas L. Brown Gallery (Lake Hayes, near Queenstown) on Sunday 21 October. Tickets available through Eventfinda, plus there will be limited door sales.

uesday 13 November is the highlight event in Canterbury’s social calendar and although there is fierce competition on the track, the fashion stakes are just as high. Addington is on track to bring fashion to the fore, as stylish racegoers prepare for this iconic event. The coveted Westfield Riccarton Style Stakes encourages everyone to go all out and put their best spring race day foot forward and, as such, the Westfield Riccarton Style Stakes and The Hits Body Art competitions are more of a head-turner each year with fine details all contributing to give that winning edge. The 2018 judges are Senior Westfield Stylist Luke Bettesworth, owner of style consultancy Signature Style Jackie O’Fee, and radio DJ Paul ‘Flynny’ Flynn from The Hits Drive Show. Flynny’s co-host, Stacey Morrison, will again be MC for the Westfield Riccarton Style Stakes, while
MCs for The Hits Body Art competition will be Brodie Kane and Dave ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald from The Hits Breakfast Show. The judges will be looking for that perfect race day outfit that combines style, originality, grooming – and of course the eye-catching head piece. Online entries are open until 10am on Monday 12 November (late entries can be made on the day). With more than $20,000 worth of prizes up for grabs from Westfield Riccarton, Pascoes, Seiko, Peninsular Beachfront Resort Mooloolaba, Lancome and Air New Zealand, the competition will be fierce. Courtesy of Air New Zealand, the Westfield Riccarton Best Dressed Lady winner will be winging her way to Hawaii, while a suave Westfield Riccarton Best Dressed Man will win flights to Brisbane. On the stylish and highly sought-after Lindauer Lawn Rooftop, the headline entertainment is New Zealand’s popular band Sons of Zion who will be living it
up with their explosive sets as members seamlessly switch from vocals, to guitar, to drums and then back again. DJ duo Sweet Mix Kids, who have played some of the world’s coolest parties, clubs and toured supporting the likes of Adele and Ed Sheeran, will get the party going in the Public Village. Get in quick to secure General Admission (with early bird pricing until 31 October) and Lindauer Lawn tickets, or for a supreme Race Day experience there are still limited hospitality options available. estfield Riccarton is destination celebration, where you could assemble your dream outfit within your lunch hour, leaving time to raise a triumphant glass of bubbles, or a flat white to your successful quest. Your outfit, beauty, grooming and picnic shopping list items are assembled under one roof, with free parking at the door. Price points suit a wide range of budgets and there are three in-house stylists if you are seeking advice. Stylist Stephanie Rumble says the best approach for a totally pulled together look is to choose one item around which your outfit gels. Much of the time it will be a main item of apparel: the dress, jacket, skirt or playsuit, but it can be every bit as effective to use an accessory as your starting point. For example, the black flowered bag (pictured) contains white, red, yellow and green, and Stephanie says any one of these colours could become the focal point of the outfit. The on-trend round sunglasses embellished with pearls (pictured) could offset a classic outfit in creams, whites, pale pink or pale yellow, with pearl jewellery. The little details connect your look, but avoid too matchymatchy as it can remove the verve from a great outfit in an instant. Make the most of race days as an opportunity to wear colours that might feel too frivolous or unsuitable for work days, plus a rainbow riot of colour always adds to the party atmosphere. Head to toe
black can be too sombre for the pleasures of the day, but can be stunning blended with white - if used in unexpected ways. Stephanie notes that colour combining is a clever way to dress, and usually wins points with both official and unofficial fashion judges. However, if you want to colour combine in unusual ways, you need to understand how to do it or seek advice to make it work. Key trends are jump suits, often with wide legs and there are many styles and price points at Westfield Riccarton, scarves à la Audrey Hepburn are huge, as are statement sunglasses. Sleeves are still a focal point in puffed, frilled, or exposed cuts, while violets, indigos, and purples dominate the spectrum, and excitingly, shoes are available in any colour you can dream. Stephanie says race day fashion always follows the doctrine of decorum. If ‘elegance is refusal’, today is the day to refuse to flash the flesh and consider hem and necklines carefully. Obviously, the stylish don’t end up barefoot, so your shoes need to have ‘legs’ to see you through the day, plus the ability to adapt to the temperature with layers is a sign of the soignée.

Casual & Coastal
A stylishly put-together casual look, encompassing soft textures reminiscent of summer spent on an Italian coast, is this season’s look which continues to celebrate the continued softening of the modern man’s wardrobe.
ashionista and Working Style store manager Leisa Falconer explains this season’s collection takes influence from a summer spent on the Amalfi coast showcasing blues, beiges, soft greens, raspberries and highlights of melon and white. “Tailoring is centred on a variety of blue; checks are as subtle as they have been for many seasons. The shoulders are soft and the lapels broad - all a nod to southern Italian style,” she says. Linen is the hero cloth of the season both with shirting and tailoring, generating a casual yet smart look. Using a variety of blended and natural fibre-rich qualities, linen will be a popular choice for tailored coats. This season’s Working Style suit collection is the first to be entirely produced in Portugal with suit silhouettes featuring softer shoulders, gently tailored sleeves and trousers. “The collection is heavily influenced by blue. The directional blue shade of the season is the Atlantic bird’s eye, which has a hint of green. The grey highlight suit of the collection is a black and white bird’s eye.” Sports coats paired with chinos in fresh white or soft neutrals and pops of colour will be in upholding the continued casualisation of men’s dressing. Footwear continues to be led by the slip on, with a structured loafer offering a cross over to both tailoring and smart casual, and a variety of shades in a suede moccasin to be worn more informally. Checks are less prominent with soft textures and neutrals showing, shoulders are soft and natural looking. The fashion colour palette has again blue tones which are complemented with shades of camel, moss green and raspberry. With New Zealand Cup and Show Week around the corner, Leisa says men shouldn’t leave organising their outfit until the last minute. “If there’s any advice I can give it’s to be more prepared. Creating beautiful bespoke pieces takes time.” As in previous years, half-lined coats will be a “go-to” choice for race day. “Half lined items are lighter to wear in the warmer months and a perfect choice for race day; paired with tropical quality pure wool trousers or chinos.” Made-to-measure experts, Working Style (situated at 242 Papanui Road) have an extensive array of fabrics from the finest mills across the world. “Our highly skilled team work with clients in a unique beautiful environment to create beautiful pieces. We make sure our suits fit the client properly and work with them to design a one-off creation.” As far from a “typical” retail store as they could be, Working Style’s showroom offers its clients a personalised and exclusive experience. “When we are putting an outfit together they can take their time to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere while sipping on a whisky or G and T.”

Always a destination store for the style cognoscenti, Plume has flourished since its move from Merivale to 181 High Street. Owner Margarita Robertson is delighted with the new store and its fresh fitout. “It is so light and airy; the clothes are so visible.”
Maxed Out By Liesl Johnstone
Change is afoot in the zeitgeist. People used to be afraid of dressing-up too much and err on the side of caution. When in doubt of the dress-code, they’d default-dress in black.
T
he lighting was carefully considered, as was detailing of the fitting rooms and the use of space. “It was wonderful to have a blank canvas to work with, the positives and negatives we’ve learnt from previous stores have been applied creating this one. “Our team would love to show off the gorgeous new store to loyal and new customers alike – access and parking in the central city have improved, so there’s no reason not to come. And we are open on Sundays!” With its reputation for a dark and witty approach to style, Plume might not be first on your radar for Cup and Show Week. However, Plume has added Dries Van Noten to existing imported labels such as Rick Owens, Comme des Garçons and Bernhard Willhelm, alongside flagship Nom*d label. Known for his amazing prints, colours, beading and an often nostalgic take on tailoring, Margarita says Dries Van Noten hits the perfect note of unconventional elegance and colour that characterises race-day dressing. Plume is also thrilled to present Rick Owens, Comme de Garçons, Dries Van Noten and more at the stunning Imagine Fashion Event in aid of Women’s Refuge. Held at the Wigram Airforce Museum on Sunday 21 October, the black-tie event hosts a three-course dinner, live band, auction, as well as top designers’ latest collections. ut, for Cup and Show week, plus spring in general, it’s a case of new city, new attitude! A great dress for this mantra is the maxi. Roll out the red carpet. This is the dress that commits. It’s a show of strength and says you’re not afraid to be elegant. Wearing a maxi, particularly one that colourfully sports a largescale print, is a fab brand of fearlessness. The maxi dress is a freedom-fighter; a spirit-lifter. In a hue-rich incarnation, the maxi doesn’t require much else. Wearing one shows that you were probably born since the ‘70s. Or, if you remember the maxi the first time around,
that the memories are good. It’s a flattering silhouette that’s circumnavigated the globe, outlasting trends. And right now it seems perfect. Fashion these days abounds in options. You can either rock the almost-maxi and flash some ankle and gorgeous shoes, or wear stilts and cover the evidence in fabric. You can opt for tier-or-ruffle dressing (for instance, see Trelise Cooper’s, Kate Sylvester’s or Maggie Marilyn’s new season dresses for inspiration) or go sleek and body-con. The maxi might have sheer panels of skirting, or a low back, or have one shoulder down. All are beautiful, indie ways of living in a more glamorous universe. Metropol October 11, 2018 59

SUIT UP

W
omen are increasingly stepping out in suits in a variety of fabrics, from linen to tweed and everything in between and not just for Cup and Show Week – we’re seeing the tailored perfection of the suit making an entrance in weddings and other events where occasional-wear is the name of the game. It’s not just structured suits, but pantsuits are also hot property for the most stylish. Once you’ve made the decision to suit up, the options are endless – jacket length, shoulder width, lapel size, waisted vs boxy, shrunken vs oversize. The good news is there’s no prevailing silhouette the powers to be are suggesting we adhere to – at least not this season. However, crucially, the wrong combination of proportions can result in a fashionable faux pas. So why not suit up, because gowns aren’t the only ladies look on the table and what other item of clothing can make you feel as powerful and in control?

n ancient hair removal technique, threading is a popular alternative to plucking and waxing and effectively deals to unwanted facial hair. Using a thin cotton thread, threading removes the entire hair follicle, is faster than tweezing and is perfect for those who suffer from skin irritations or allergies. No hair is too thick or thin for threading and hair grows back thinner and finer. Tame sparse, overgrown or wild eyebrows and take that first step towards better brows by heading into Elegant Eyebrows. The team does eyebrow tinting, eyelash perming and eyelash extensions.
A quick glimpse: • Threading only removes hair and not skin. • Threading is chemical free and better for sensitive skin. •Threading lasts longer than plucking or waxing. •Threading is more precise and gives a more defined finish. • Threading is faster. • It is generally agreed that threading is not as painful as waxing and other hair removal procedures. •The technique grabs even the shortest hairs, giving a smooth finish.

cco True Indigo Leather has opened up more colours, textures and possibilities for shoes and bags, with a new leather innovation and a dye that has coloured almost every civilisation, from the ancient to the modern. For thousands of years, man had not found a way of dyeing premium cow and camel leathers indigo blue and achieving exceptional results. But Ecco Leather, based in the Netherlands and widely regarded as the world’s leading research and development centre for the material, made the breakthrough. Reinterpreting the traditional, artisanal methods of dyeing jeans, three different finishes for Ecco True Indigo Leather have been developed – with more colours to come. Just as every hide is different,
the same drum at the tannery can produce many different gradations of indigo blue. Highlights amongst the collection include the Ecco Shape Wedge Plateau Sandal, and the Ecco Sp 2 Medium Doctor’s Bag, with its denim look achieved with Ecco True Indigo camel leather, which shows more of the natural imperfections than cow hide. The combination of the denim-inspired camel leather and the hand-stitched top handles gives the women’s bag its distinctive appeal. With a strong focus on simplicity, function, and environmentally friendly practices, Ecco constantly strives to make the most comfortable and versatile footwear. An iconic anniversary By Nicholas Henare
Christchurch has some iconic places that resonate amongst us. Dux De Lux is possibly the definition of this and has been a core part of Christchurch life since 1978, starting on the ground floor in the Arts Centre, before expanding into a bar in 1987. Live music, coffee and fresh fruit juice, yes fruit juice, were unique selling points back then.
O
WWW.THEDUX.CO.NZ
h how far we have come. and it’s amazing to think that we are celebrating the 40th anniversary this month. It’s hard to think of Christchurch hospitality over those years not having the Dux as a core part of its hospitality fabric. It’s where the likes of Salmonella Dub and Shapeshifter got their start. It’s where Bic Runga was found by Sony Music and The Feelers by Warner. Dux was a hotbed of New Zealand music right in our own backyard. Recognising there was a need for beer that was a bit different, the team started selling European styles. In 1989 Richard Sinke had a craft brewery humming along just as America was having its craft beer renaissance and well before it took off here. The year 1990 saw its move away from a purely vegetarian menu to incorporating seafood, which has become such a staple in Dux Dining now and something the restaurant is well recognised for doing well at. I remember the moment I sat down for a
fantastic Mexican dish which became a prime motivator in my career as a chef. So many of us have a Dux story to share. How many of us enjoyed the courtyard next to the Arts Centre on a balmy afternoon to meet friends or family over pizza and a pitcher of Ginger Tom, protected from a ghastly southerly or easterly wind? Richard Sinke is proud of what he’s achieved over the years, but as he says, “Dux’s future is tied to Christchurch. We’re extremely excited to see what the vibrancy and life will look like in Christchurch in 10 years.” Yes, our future in Christchurch is exciting, but I think it’s great to look back on the milestone that is Dux de Lux on its 40th anniversary and congratulate the business on not only surviving in such a challenging industry, but becoming the iconic gamechanger that it has been over the years. It has shaped what we’ve come to expect from hospitality in Christchurch. Here’s looking at you Dux De Lux. Cheers for the memories.

Hair today, gone tomorrow By Liesl Johnstone
Now’s the time to give your hair a little consideration. We’re often told gorgeous hair is a matter of health and good diet, which makes sense.
S
o foods high in good fats and proteins are the way forward. Salmon, chicken, cheeses, olive oil, avocados, nuts… all feed hair volume and gloss from within. Add at least one egg a day, plus one brazil nut, to be selenium-safe. Then there’s the question of how to style your healthy hair for the fun days ahead, for Cup Day, and all the other seasonal dress-ups. Elaborate up-do, or a certain cut and stylised treatment? As with dressing, retro looks are still conquering all, such as ‘80s rock-star perms, conferring luscious heads of curls, or the dead-straight and glossy, with the middlepart. Then there’s the kinked, balayaged ombre long-bob, fringed or not.
Two things are worth considering. The first is to make a hair appointment for the ideal time, so that you’ll look beautiful, no matter which style you choose. The second is to play devil’s advocate with your tresses. Essentially this is the law of opposites. Be contrary. If your dress is very tailored or fitted, go loose, flowing and more natural on the hair front. Conversely, if you’re in a sharp-looking yet oversized double-breasted jacket (left swinging open), a close-groomed-cut and architectural sunglasses could look fab. If a hat or fascinator is in the mix, take it to the hairdresser and, a tad of backcombing later, your best look will materialise. Metropol October 11, 2018 69

o those who think such musings are shallow or vain, look away now. Or don’t. Because there’s a light-hearted sense of fashion-fun afoot, globally. Basically, dressing ourselves is not that serious. It should be amusing, satisfying and enjoyable. Even if you get it ‘wrong,’ that’s totally a matter of opinion. It’s worth noting that the dressy occasion-wear now being photographed worldwide appears to be grand in concept, yet simple in execution. Beautiful tailoring and catwalk-like proportions are more often being spotted at real-life events. So unabashed glamour is in, including sheeny, large-patterned fabrics. Anything designer with interesting sleeves can be a lucky op-shop find! Balance a largeshoulder sleeve with a defined waist and flared skirt/pant. The successfully styled ‘looks’ these days, including from our own fabulous Kiwi designers, are often grandly frivolous. They’ll have at least one flamboyant element, including colour. Occasion-wear dresses or pant-suits should look like the main event in your entire ensemble. Does your outfit transport you somewhere dreamy or whimsical? Does your dress possess magic? Does it gleam or sashay? Are proportions extreme or balletic? Dramatic, large-scale frills or necklines that are either demure or noteworthy are de rigeur! In essence, try theming the whole thing. That’s simpler, when choosing accessories. Imagine a movie character and go for gold.

Live music will serenade among four acres of glorious park-like surroundings, at Stover farm on Geraldine’s Main North Road. At the fete, find the perfect Cup Day accessories from Geraldine’s own Talbot Silver. Beautiful, unique pieces in the timeless quality of sterling silver will finish a Cup Day outfit with finesse - or perhaps find that perfect Christmas gift. Tickets are $15 per person (under 15 free), which can be purchased on the day or through Eventfinda.

Turning heads Spring is in the air and with it comes New Zealand Cup and Show Week (NZCSW), the South Island’s premier Spring Festival. And, fashion alert, if you’re looking to turn heads, then it’s high time to start thinking about your headwear.
C
hristchurch sister duo behind Show Pony Millinery, Liv and Carrie, fill us in on what we can expect to see at this year’s Cup and Show Week. From the Melbourne Cup to England’s Royal Ascot, Carrie notes top trends for this racing season are centred on a return to elegance and vintage styles, with a mix of soft pastels and bold, bright colours to celebrate summer. “We saw a big nod towards classic, 1940s glam at the recent royal wedding. However, looking towards the earlier spring racing events in Australia you’re seeing bright and bold colours – canary yellow, hot fuchsia and statement reds among others. “There have been plenty of flower
crowns at New Zealand Cup & Show Week over the past few years so we’re looking forward to seeing Cantabrians branch out a little more this time round and embrace millinery like the rest of the world – whether that’s a classic-style headpiece, an on-trend boater or a standout crown or halo.” Liv adds, “As an example, one year ago we were selling halo hats to our international clients and wearing them to the track ourselves – but it’s only now, after the Duchess of Cambridge wore one to Prince Louis’ christening, that it seems New Zealand is starting to realise how great a style they are. “Embellishments and bejewelled pieces –
from feathers, bows and veiling, to classic Baroque-style detailing – are all over the international runways, at prominent events such as the Met Gala and being translated exceptionally well in Australia’s emerging 2018 spring racing millinery trends.” However, the girls are also keen to point out that trends aren’t everything. “Just like there are horses for courses, that’s the same for people and headpieces,” Carrie says. “They’re statement accessories, so they need to work in with not only your outfit, but your personality too”. Liv adds “it can be good to check out current looks and be inspired by them, but always come back to selecting something that also reflects who you are.”

cuisine Ingredients 700g raw prawns deveined, in shell 2 sprigs of dill 1 bay leaf 2 tsp salt Fresh cracked black pepper About 2 litres water 1 ripe avocado 2 tsp lime juice 1/2 cup diced celery 1/3 cup chopped green onion 3 tbsp minced fresh dill Salt 1/4 cup mayo
A spring salad Cold shrimp salads are the perfect accompaniment to spring meals. With prawns, fresh avocado, fresh dill, avocado, green onion and celery, it packs as much nutritional punch as it does deliciousness.
Method Bring water to boil and add 1/2 of the lime juice, bay leaf, dill sprigs, salt and pepper. Mix well and simmer for a few minutes. Add prawns to the pot and cook until just done, this won’t take long. Strain water and let prawns cool in the strainer until cool enough to handle. Peel prawns and add them to a mixing bowl. Cut, pit and peel avocado. Dice the avocado meat and add it to the bowl, along with diced celery, green onion, minced dill, lime juice and salt, mixing gently. Add mayo and mix until all evenly coated. Cool for 30 minutes to an hour and serve. Store in the refrigerator, in an air-tight container.

Eight… & still counting Talking to Bink Bowler, the man behind our city’s Black & White Coffee Cartel, you immediately understand why Christchurch is beginning to look pretty darned amazing; while many post-earthquakes wrung their hands in despair, Bink saw it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity not to be wasted.
Catering for any occasion Work shouts, parties, picnics or just because!
e’ve got no choice; we’ve got to go for it. We’re set to become the most modern, thriving city in the world! Look at what we’ve achieved out of this disaster. Imagine us five years from now – it’s very exciting!” In 2015, Bink opened his first Black & White in Victoria Street; this year marks the opening of the eighth, at Plymouth Lane in the CBD. A triumph, indeed, for one who’s had to weather his fair share of doom ‘n’ gloom prophets. Bink believes what makes the Christchurch café scene so unique is because it’s a daytime city. “And Christchurch people are real daytime people. We have beautiful parks and rivers. This is a fantastic place to live and raise a family. Ours is a traditional city and we should embrace that.” With an eye to opening another café in Queenstown, Bink says his loyalty to Christchurch remains. “That’s always been our mantra. We’ve never lost confidence in Christchurch. Every year here just gets better!” Bink Bowler, ladies and gentlemen, barista and entrepreneur; the kind of guy that helps take a city from ordinary to awesome! ver at The Pedal Pusher, Addington, they’re very excited to present to customers their hot-off-the press spring menu. It’s a taste-bud treat; a veritable springtime, gastronomic frolic of superb Kiwi cuisine. Chef Bevan Ward says the focus of their menu has very much shifted to supporting local people. “For example, most of our meat is sourced locally, from excellent suppliers, such as Ellesmere Butchery.” A recent introduction to the menu is fat enriched, low carbohydrate dishes, for customers following a Keto diet. “And because we believe that a great restaurant should cater to all dietary requirements, we have six vegan/ gluten free dishes on our spring menu,” says owner Rana. Whether catching up with friends for cake and coffee, following the footy with a juicy steak and craft beer, or lingering over a fabulous full-course feast, this is the place to be. Because of the great location, it’s a doddle to perambulate, or pedal, to nearby entertainment venues, such as The Horncastle Arena, the Addington Raceway, or The Court Theatre. So, pull on over, park up your penny-farthing and pop in to the most pedal pumpin’ pub in town! The Pedal Pusher 286 Lincoln Road, for brunch, lunch and dinner, open 9am to late. Phone 03 335 0095, email pedalpusherchristchurch@gmail.com or visit www.pedalpusherchristchurch.co.nz.

t 147 Esplanade, next to the clock tower, Ocean Café and Bar is open every day for a la carte breakfast and lunch with baristas to make you a sumptuous coffee or two using L’affare Primo Coffee beans. With the need to reduce plastics entering the ocean, Ocean Café and Bar has been plastic free for the last six months. With so many of its customers having hot drinks in takeaway cups whilst dining in, it is introducing cup cycling by November. Have you tried the legendary Zucchini and Corn Parmesan Fritters or creamy mushrooms with bacon for breakfast? Then what are you waiting for? Or perhaps lunch menu options like Smashed
Pumpkin with Sundried Tomato Stack or Crispy Pork Balls with a crunchy Asian slaw. It’s a menu with variation designed to please, so you can enjoy the beautiful view while savouring something truly unique. The menu changes three times a year, so there is always something new, including vegetarian options along with bespoke vegan options for those who need them; $5 Friday is a great time to visit, with a selection of tapas, beer and wine. With its friendly atmosphere, great staff and unique vista, Ocean Café and Bar will keep you coming back time and time again to savour something that little bit special. Enjoy. set Christmas menu is on offer, with prices starting from $45pp, with options like the Christmas platter, with smoked and cured meats, pate, beef and chicken skewers, garlic prawns, dips and crispy garlic bread. Main Fair Cider, thyme and roasted apple turkey breast with candid almond stuffing and cranberry sauce or the pistachio and light mustard crusted salmon steak with citrus butter and spiced orange pickle and accompanied by a dessert is just a taste of what’s on a much bigger menu that must be seen to be appreciated. Why not head in for the EC Oktoberfest degustation dinner on 26 October with four courses and a wine or beer match for only $59; celebrate Christmas early! With 32 great beers on offer, owner Mark McGuinness says people often start with Stella, then their taste buds grow into bigger bolder flavours like Leffe or Grand Cru which keeps them coming back. With pre and post-theatre dining when a trip to the Academy Cinema is part of the plan or just a trip in with family or friends, access is easy with 250 carparks. The regular menu retains its revered favourites, steak fries and the mussel aficionado’s choice, but there’s always new options to keep things interesting. So drop in for a pint or two and give ‘The Hof’ your tick of approval.

How fortunate for us, then, that we’ve vineyards like the stunning Ataahua Wines, at 83 Church Road, Waipara, producing wines so quaffable that not only Omar, but Bacchus himself would surely applaud with a standing ovation. Ataahua grows grapes for their merlot, pinot noir (from which they also craft their rosé), and gewurtztraminer (from which they also craft a dessert wine) varietals, while their chardonnay, riesling and sauvignon blanc grapes are sourced from local vineyards within the Waipara valley. Launched in 2008 by Andrew Grant and Stephanie Henderson-Grant, Ataahua (meaning beautiful, picturesque – a place of beauty) creates boutique, artisan style wines, which, as Stephanie proudly explains, are “Hand-crafted from point of fruit growth and maintenance of vines right through to point of ready for bottling (only the bottling is done offsite), using NZ made bottles. They’re fashioned with love and very tender care!” The current wine vintages available are 2016 and 2017 Riesling, 2016 Gewurztraminer, 2017 Rosé, 2018 Rosé, 2016 Chardonnay, 2017 Sauvignon Blanc, 2015 Pinot Noir, 2015 Merlot, 2014 Late Harvest Gewurztraminer. Industrial edge: One of the most dynamic lighting trends in 2019 are industrial-style lamps. A little bit hipster with an edge of refinement is how to make this trend work in just about any space. Vintage vibes: Vintage bulbs hanging on lengthy cables add personality to your abode and can work for everything, from contemporary to rustic spaces. Malleable metals: Metallics have remained on centre stage for the longest of times, but now designer lighting fixtures that can be shaped to your own tastes is becoming hot property. Gorgeous geometry: Geometric shapes are the other lighting trend 2019 not to be missed, with this bright trend blending well with a range of styles, from vintage, to Scandinavian style, or even art deco. Super-size me: Big is better when it comes to the current crop of shades and fittings. No need to be shy! Take a walk on the super-sized side. Intelligent inspiration: Meanwhile, intelligent lighting controls are revolutionising the way we see our environments – quite literally.

What trends do you see emerging this spring? Whether you are intending on a moody dark room or a fresh white palette, all our fabric companies around the world are suggesting more colour. We have pineapples, flowers and large prints coming through, for outside and inside use. We need more people in Christchurch that want to be different and go for an individual look that suits them. What is your favourite thing to include in your designs right now? Steel and timber combined in pieces of furniture. We tend to be moving away from built units and cabinetry. Freestanding pieces of bespoke furniture or individually purchased pieces are making a comeback. There are some beautiful pieces available for the look you want. Open and boxed shelving for indoor plants to sit on seem to be popular this spring. What advice would you give to someone looking to renovate or build? Engage a designer to help with the large decisions at an early stage. Spending a little bit of money for some good design advice can save you a lot of time, money and mistakes later on. Set a budget and stick to it. Someone who knows what they are doing can help you achieve the look you want by comprising what I call ‘highs and lows’. This means higher priced items and low priced can sit in the same room side by side to achieve the look you want.
Interior Inspiration Metropol caught up with award-winning interior designer Angelique Armstrong from Armstrong Interiors to get a sneak peek at the latest trends to hit the home.

What makes a successful interior for you? When I walk into a room and feel inspired, it is due to the combination of colour, layout, accessories and fabrics used. This can be achieved through colours sitting well together, new products on the market and seeing the enjoyment on my clients’ faces when they see and feel what they are getting. From design choices made early on to the beautiful and homely final touches. What are you currently inspired by? I love many different interior design looks, renovated villas, to very modern, minimalist new builds. At present I am working on a range of jobs from a heavy industrial-feel project with elegance in Auckland, to a modern rustic project in Queenstown. I am inspired when I get immersed into each job and creating beautiful interiors.

apart,” he says. “We retain the bones of the kitchen and replace the doors, drawer fronts and benchtops for a completely new look.” The service will not only breathe new life into your kitchen and provide a stunning result with the perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality, but it also saves homeowners thousands of dollars. Using locally sourced materials, it’s also a more eco-friendly option, with as much of the existing kitchen re-used as possible. Adrian established Dream Doors Christchurch six years ago. “I wanted to get involved in the rebuild, to help people get back on their feet and this was a small way to give back.” The business offers a complete package and a bespoke service, guiding the customer through each stage of the process, from design to installation. Everything is taken care of – from arranging the electrician and plumber, to splashbacks and appliances. A free upgrade to the latest melamine door technology – laser edging – is currently available, so now is a good time to create your dream kitchen. “Laser edging gives a much cleaner, crisper look. We have a full range of door styles and patterns, and benchtops for any budget and look you’re trying to achieve.” Located in Wigram, phone 03 338 1081 or email adrian@dreamdoors.co.nz for a free consultation.

Architect Craig South takes a look at how Christchurch’s growing cycle and pedestrian infrastructure is poised to transform the city’s future.
e city
Within our own architectural practice, we are witnessing an interesting shift in commuting habits. Some people have completely switched over to cycling, while others are choosing to drive part way before completing their commute on a bike. Most are thinking about how they travel to and from work and whether it’s time to make some changes. Personally, I’ve been warming to the idea of cycling to work more often. My cycle route is through Hagley Park and I find that so much more relaxing than the drive. For starters, I have the freedom to think about other things than morning traffic. It takes me 15 minutes to bike to work, compared to 10 minutes by car. When you factor in how long it can take to find a car park, cycling does not add significantly to travel time. Plus, cycling bestows fitness and petrol saving advantages. It’s such an easy, stress free way to build physical activity into the day. Commuting by bike, bus or foot is definitely more ecologically sustainable than taking the car, unless you happen to own an electric vehicle, of course. Some of our larger civic and commercial organisations are leading the way in supporting all the various green transport alternatives through providing electric car charging stations, secure bike parking and associated shower and locker facilities. For those who haven’t been on a bike for a while, give it a try one weekend and find out just how easy it is to get around on twowheels. It really is a fun way to explore the city! www.caarc.co.nz

P
art of the vision for the Christchurch rebuild was to create a city that would be safer, cleaner and easier to access. Most Cantabrians agree with that in principle, while still commuting to work every day in private motor vehicles that pollute the environment and clog up roads. Maybe it’s time to rethink how we travel in and out of the city. I’m optimistic this will happen as people begin to explore the city’s changing travel network. Christchurch already has many new dedicated cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways linking up different parts of the CBD and connecting with similar developments in the wider city and outlying districts. We may not yet be up there with Copenhagen – the world’s first ‘Bike City’ – but this shift towards sharing our streets more evenly between motorists, cyclists and pedestrians is starting to create a more positive feel for the whole urban environment. While some of the city’s new cycle ways are still somewhat under-used, they are a resource waiting to be tapped into. All that’s required is a shift in thinking and a willingness to give it a go. Over time, they will grow to be recognised as a real asset for the city not least because fewer cars on the roads will ultimately mean less traffic congestion. Imagine the Riverside farmers’ market once it’s up and running. With most people walking or cycling there on a Saturday rather than driving, it will be an amazing evolution for the central city.
Architectural Mystery There are few architectural details that can give a home a sense of mystery and wonder like a secret door leading to a hidden room.
I
f you’ve ever wanted a private hideaway, extra secure storage for valuables, or an almost magical escape to another world, a hidden room is sure to amaze and inspire. One local Christchurch builder renovating his home had just such a whim for a hidden room – actually a hidden office/workroom. The most common mechanism for accessing a hidden room is via a bookcase that conceals a secret door. That’s where Murray Hewitt Joinery came into the story. “The client supplied us with a whole lot of recycled rimu and asked us to turn a picture of a bookcase cum door from the Internet into practical reality,” Murray Hewitt says. “Creative engineering certainly came into play as we scratched
our heads about how to create the required pivot in the bookcase so it would open as a door, but when shut would look like a single unit. It was a fascinating challenge – something different and out of the ordinary.” The team at Murray Hewitt Joinery really enjoys the ‘out of the ordinary’. “They had fun working out the complex design then cleaning up any defects in the recycled timber, laminating it and adding details such as architraves to the bookcase itself to fit in with the style of the home. We definitely can turn our hands to anything and everything.” Located at 25A Lunns Road, phone 03 343 0360 or email info@ mhj.co.nz. See the extensive joinery portfolio on www.mhj.co.nz.

PILLOW TALK VENUS CHAIRS
W
ith their purposeful role in our homes, they are in the prime position to make a design statement. So whether you’re in store for a comfy couch or some bentwood beauties, we’ve got the low-down on the sweetest seats around. Although a lifelong member of the practicality party, dining chairs are getting a cool 2019 makeover. We’re increasingly seeing more creativity injected into their design, like the beautiful Venus Chairs by Pillow Talk, pictured. When it comes to couches, it seems bigger is better, with plump silhouettes and over-sized chaise sectionals all the rage right now, which is a plus when it comes to comfort. Curvy, rounded edges are having a serious moment in 2018. Traditional ’70s colours such as mustard, sage and deep jewel tones lend a healthy dose of vintage flair, or keep your finger on the contemporary pulse with of-the-moment shades like cobalt blue or millennial pink. Luxe materials such as velvet are making their luxurious mark. If it’s the mid-century aesthetic you’re after, fear not – this art deco-inspired trend isn’t going anywhere soon. This look is all about opulence and glamour, so look for tuxedo or cabriolestyle sofas. Its modern incarnation incorporates many of the same design motifs as when it first hit the style scene in the 20s. Expect glossy blacks, shiny chrome, deep, tonal hues of purples and reds, bold geometric shapes, funky animal skins and ornate detailing.

et it seems this happy hue has knocked millennial pink of its popularity perch and this bright and punchy new player is vying for power. Gen Z Yellow is the latest buzz word in home décor circles. While yellow can be a polarising colour to wear, anything on the spectrum from lemon to mustard—which is where Gen Z Yellow lies—tends to be pretty easy to work with when it comes to design. After all, you don’t have immovable facets such as complexions to work with when it comes to our living spaces. As such, it’s now embraced as energetic but equally relaxing; an ally to homes that want to generate an authentic aura of warmth. Tread carefully, for risk of it dominating and overwhelming the space. Start with the accents – curtains, lighting, cushions, throws and even rugs are great places to start. Say hello to yellow, the hottest colour of the summer, by welcoming a splash of sunshine into your home.

SAY
It’s the divisive hue of the colour wheel; in nature, when paired with black, yellow means danger; in Japan it represents courage; in Russia, a psychiatric hospital is known as a ‘yellow house’; it is also the colour of sunshine, happiness and sunflowers.

Not only do these clever new creations add functionality and aesthetic value, but they create a focal point for your interior space. Geometric shapes, simple minimalist concrete creations, intricate macramé, or mid-century plant stands, there’s something for everyone to go potty over. So get clever and get planting.

AN INNOVATIVE CORE
F
ollowing on from a range of electric vehicles rolling out at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Infiniti Prototype 10 recaptures the spirit of early speedsters for an era of electrified performance. The concept represents a physical manifestation of Infiniti’s creative and ambitious plans. Yet again this year’s range of prototypes have a familiar early 1900s feel to the vehicle, with a flash back to those incredibly well styled vehicles of the 1920s and 30s.
As a brand with technological innovation at its core, electrification is a natural next step for Infiniti. From 2021, every new Infinity model will be electrified, featuring hybrid or battery electric technology to enhance performance. The Prototype 10 provides a window into this desire to deliver driving pleasure, thrilling performance and range confidence. With prototypes built to please the eye as well as the desire to see innovation in driving requirements, Infiniti has produced something to rival even the
purest of luxury brands on show at Concours d’Elegance. “We all feel a certain degree of passion when talking about roadsters and speedsters,” Infiniti President Roland Krueger says. “We are equally passionate about the potential that electrification holds for the future of our cars – a daring speedster is the perfect study for our designers to explore an electrified future and ignite such excitement.”

T
he new concept follows two other design studies revealed by the company in the last 12 months: the Prototype 9 – first revealed in 2017 – and the Infiniti Q Inspiration concept, unveiled at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Where Prototype 9 – a sleek, openwheeled, electric retro-roadster – imagined an alternative history for Infiniti, the Prototype 10 is resolutely focused on what the future holds for the brand. Utterly daring in its bold execution, the new concept is inspired by the spirit of early speedsters, its form and function evoking driving pleasure and thrilling performance. “The Infinity Prototype 10 echoes the layout and design of early speedsters,” Executive Design Director for the brand Karim Habib says.
“This period saw the creation of some of the most evocative car designs of all time, where power was celebrated through high-powered single-seat competition cars. Our new concept speaks of an electrified future, something which is reflected in its form and details. It is appropriate that we found inspiration in an optimistic bygone era in which cars were characterised by the simple love of driving.” A future vision realised by Infinity designers, Prototype 10 is informed by some of the most iconic car designs of all time. Its cool, clean forward looking design is further complemented by its electrical performance. It seems that this year’s prototypes have that all familiar feel and it really is, back to the future.

Automotive adrenalin pump By Ben Selby
The man out for a walk came up to me and asked, “wow, how many houses is this thing worth?” The ‘thing’ in question was this 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder.
W
hen the Gallardo was launched in 2004, it was Lamborghini’s first small car since the 1980s’ Jalpa. It would go on to become Lamborghini’s most popular car ever, with 14,022 being produced before production ended in 2013. Countless special variants also evolved, such as the gorgeous open-top Spyder. Designed by Belgian, Luc Donckerwolke, the Gallardo’s lines still look crisp and modern. Sure, there are no scissor doors, but the Gallardo still makes for a stunning looking piece of kit. Sitting inside, you are
surrounded by a sumptuous cabin. Plus, the rampaging bull on the steering wheel is a stark reminder of Taurean company founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini. As the Gallardo was made under Audi ownership, the switches and buttons for the centre console all come from the A8. Everything has a quality feel to it, from the sat nav to air con. Though in the Spyder, the best air con comes from putting the roof down. Twenty seconds later, with the roof stowed away behind you, it’s time to hit
the blacktop. Turn key and the 5.0-litre V10 with 382kW, awakens. This beating heart, coupled with either a six-speed open gated manual, or paddle shift E-Gear gearbox, allows the Gallardo to reach the national limit in 4.3 seconds and see the far side of 315 km/h flat out. The Gallardo Spyder is still a true automotive adrenalin pump, thanks to acceleration that would re-arrange your fillings, gorgeous looks and that amazing spine-tingling noise. A grand day out it certainly was.

Motorcycling in his blood First European owner Andy Burchall built his first motorcycle when he was 15 years old, using a box of old parts he bought.
“M
um and dad were pretty convinced I would never get it going, but I put it together and it worked,” he says. “And then I used to sneak out to ride it.” Motorcycling is in his blood. “It’s addictive – it’s like a disease that you either have or you don’t – and if you’ve got it, you can’t get rid of it.” With 25 years in the motor trade, Andy is an engineer by profession. His passion for the industry is reflected in First European,
which he took over five years ago with his wife, Teresa. Transforming it into a centric hub for motorcycle enthusiasts, they added Throttlestop Coffee Club upstairs to create a social space for customers, offering fresh barista-made coffees, food and comfortable seating. “We wanted to provide more of a community atmosphere, rather than just a bike shop – have a coffee and chat while your bike is being serviced. Many of our regulars have made friends here and we
also often provide a range of events for our customers, including ‘shop rides’ every third Saturday of the month.” The expert team are the official sales and servicing agents for Royal Enfield, MV Agusta, Benelli, and SWM motorcycles. From customised, retro and classic bikes, to used bikes, scooters and superbikes, First European also offers a wide range of clothing and accessories. UNDER THE HO A TIGER
Picking up the Mercedes A200 hatch from Armstong Prestige, I was invited to be shown a few things about the connectivity in the vehicle but declined due to the fact I’m a bit “I’ve got this, how hard can it be” I must admit.

SLIGHTLY FEMININE WITH A LITTLE TIGER UNDER THE HOOD
I
was wrong and should have spent some time with their knowledge. It’s the next stage of driving with an intelligent interface. The statistics are all there, 1322cc, four-cylinder, 120kW, 250 Nm direct injection, turbocharged sevenspeed automatic, with sports seats and 18-inch, five twin spoke alloys with duel exhaust. The front wheel drive starts at $60,900. It features hill start assist where if you take your foot off the brake while on a hill it gives you a few seconds to put your foot on the accelerator, so you don’t roll back. Simple ideas are sometimes the best. The voice activation system gets a bit too eager. It turns on when you say, “My Mercedes” and while driving it logged on with “What can I help you with?” after we said, “My Monday’s looking busy”. Having spent the last few months driving more expensive, more powerful vehicles with more features, I was expecting the A200 to be a little ‘tame’ but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s got some good torque; being red must have made it quicker. But its speed is paired with great looks thanks to all that brushed aluminium, a great sunroof and those beautiful Mercedes slopping angles that
make it look… sexy. The dashboard interactivity is where the A200 is really dynamic though with a massive amount of options available from a 26cm touchscreen, kind of like a giant iPad. Navigating this is a little sensitive for my liking, with a centre console touch pad rather than the old dial system, but that could just be that I’m a bit old and not quite as cool as I should be. The only thing that did give me the odd question was the aggressive lane assist system that gave a rather jarring brake when I ‘deviated’ from my lane. Here in Christchurch we are all aware that sometimes you just can’t stay in a lane with the roadworks around and, when you get a braking system cutting in, that can get a bit annoying. Still, it is there to keep you safe, so I’ll let them away with it. The interior is black leather with great stitching and cool LED lighting trim. All in all, my week with it showed that as we get further on with technology, luxury car brands like Mercedes will keep pushing more and more options for you to make your experience more responsive. At this price range, there is a lot going for the A200. I think it a great option up against the Audi A3; slightly feminine with a little tiger under the hood.
