SHARING IS CARING As the electric car movement heats up in New Zealand, a local start-up has chosen Christchurch as the first city in the country to launch its innovative, future-focused car sharing initiative. Cantabrians using Yoogo Share have already saved 50 tonnes of carbon, or the equivalent of more than 20,000 litres of petrol being used.

F

or Kirsten Corson, getting behind the wheel of a traditional combustion engine vehicle is akin to driving an old tractor. But put her behind the wheel of an electric car and she’s a happy woman. Not surprising then that she is helping more Kiwis experience the thrill of going electric, as the General Manager of Yoogo Share, the company behind New Zealand’s first 100 percent electric car sharing service. Launched in Christchurch in February, Yoogo Share has brought 100 pure electric vehicles (EVs) to eight (and counting!) locations throughout Christchurch. It’s free to join and there are no membership fees; simply sign-up (membership criteria applies), get sent a Yoogo Share access card, then book and drive the vehicles as and when needed. Christchurch City Council initiated the service when they put out a tender in 2017 for electric car sharing as part of the city’s

rebuild. Fast forward to early 2018 and Kirsten found herself officially launching Yoogo Share alongside Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Yoogo Share business members love driving the electric cars for getting to meetings and running errands. A more convenient option than ride hailing or public transport, they’re also great fun to drive. Plus, you only pay for the time you use the car, with all other costs including insurance and storage covered by the hourly rate. Meanwhile, for private members, the shared electric cars are a great alternative to a second car, with many families choosing to sell their second car that often sits unused. For people who commute to work via public transport, walking or cycling, the cars are ideal for those times when you do need a car such as picking up shopping or longer journeys when public transport isn’t an option. So why share? With petrol prices higher than ever before and the high cost of purchase for electric cars, you can drive an electric car without having to buy one. In fact, no insurance, WOF, registration, repairs, maintenance or fuel costs. Plus,

with no tailpipe emissions, Yoogo Share is helping improve Christchurch’s air quality. With 50 tonnes of carbon savings already under their belt, Yoogo Share’s members are expected to make 100 tonnes of carbon savings by Christmas. To mark the milestone, the company partnered with the Department of Conservation, Meridian Energy and Hyundai to help restore the Evans Pass valley, planting 1,000 native trees to represent the kilometres travelled

by Yoogo Share members. To try out the electric car sharing experience, the first hour is free for 1,000 bookings for Yoogo Share private members, thanks to their energy partners in Canterbury, Meridian Energy. Private members can get the first hour of their booking free for up to five bookings, giving everybody the opportunity to try Yoogo Share cars. So what are you waiting for? After all, sharing is caring.

Metropol caught up with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern about rolling with the punches, the Christchurch rebuild and the joy of motherhood – pg. 8

www.metropol.co.nz

“I think the best role models for women are people who are fruitfully and confidently themselves, who bring light into the world,” —Meryl Streep It’s been said that no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Beautiful in its simplicity, it points to the ripple effect that kindness can make in the world. The ancient Greeks viewed kindness as not only beneficial for the salvation of the soul in the afterlife, but also in this life too! Physiologically, kindness increases the dopamine levels in our brains, creating a natural high. Meanwhile, emotional warmth produces oxytocin, which reduces blood pressure and the free radicals associated with aging. Our beautiful cover model this issue, Jacinda Adhern, has been taking messages of kindness to a global stage. “I really rebel against this idea that politics has to be a place full of ego and where you’re constantly focused on scoring hits against one another,” she said in a recent interview. “Yes we need a robust democracy, but you can be strong and you can be kind.” Early in my media career I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Whitebait TV’s Janine Morrell-Gunn. Living, breathing proof that being a successful businesswoman ABC AUDITED and being a nice person are not mutually exclusive, she said, “You don’t have to be an ass to get what you want”. “There are a lot of tough people in television, but we have this saying ‘first do no harm’. It is possible and we have always tried to treat people well.” Thankfully we have plenty of inspirational women leaders, both locally and AUDITED internationally, who too believe in the virtue of kindness.

By Sarah Jarvis

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has just celebrated one year in the country’s top role, so Metropol caught up with her about rolling with the punches, the Christchurch rebuild and the joy of motherhood. What has your first year in office taught you? Patience and gratitude. Everything takes longer than you’d like but every day I am grateful for the opportunity to be doing such important work. If your daughter Neve went into politics, what advice would you give her? Long pause… Well, I hope by the time she’s old enough it will be a slightly kinder place! I’d tell her to follow her heart. How do you deal with pressure or stressful situations? I don’t stress as much as I used to. I still feel enormous pressure to not let people down, but I’ve learned to roll with the punches more than I did. There will always be tough decisions to make and I know I’ll be criticised for some of those, but I’m here to do the best I can and that’s what I’ll continue to do. If you weren’t in politics what else would you like to do? Telling stories, in some form. More than likely doing something on behalf of kids too. The greatest Prime Minister (living or dead) in your opinion is/was….. and why? Michael Joseph Savage – he left a legacy that lasts to this day in the form of housing and support.

What are your thoughts around the rebuild of Christchurch? There seems to be a real sense of optimism and excitement in Christchurch at the moment and it’s fantastic to see. We’ve had the opening of the new central library to rave reviews, we’ve been able to confirm funding for the new stadium, the convention centre is underway and we’ve fixed a $70 million budget blowout in the Metro Sports Facility and got that project back on track. But I know the recovery of a city is about more than just bricks and mortar. It’s about people, so we’ve also prioritised mental health support in Canterbury schools to ensure every child can have access to a mental health worker and we’re reforming EQC and providing more services to speed up getting people’s insurance claims solved. If you had one wish what would it be? That everyone has something to do, somewhere to live, someone to love and something to hope for. You’ve met a lot of celebrities in your role as Prime Minister. Who was your favourite and why? Honestly? The kids I meet at schools around the country would be my favourites, hands down. Describe motherhood in one word. Joy.

he 760 square metre house with its four hectares of land must be sold as the owner has already purchased elsewhere,” she says. “This is a rare opportunity to own a country estate on the fringe of the city. The house is of outstanding quality with classic elegant lines crafted in the enduring beauty of Oamaru stone and with expansive entertaining areas inside and out. “We find it a joy to hold open homes at `Alpine View’ because there is so much beauty everywhere inside the house and show-stopping views of the mountains as well.” Cindy-Lee explains that the house has six beautifully appointed double bedrooms and four bathrooms – plenty of room for guests and friends. There is also an indoor heated pool and sauna, as well as an office and an attached, fully self-contained apartment which is ideal for extended family. And of course there is the entertainer’s dream-ofa-kitchen and butler’s pantry finished in granite. “The detailing and quality of finish is exceptional throughout, from the soaring cathedral ceilings upstairs, the Italian marble and the north-facing living areas that open the home to the grounds. The property really offers what has to be the ultimate lifestyle.” You can contact Cindy-Lee on 03 355 6677, or 0274 888 616. Email cindy.sinclair@harcourts.co.nz.

Winning

COMBINATIONS One of the few things that forecasters agree on is that most individuals will experience many more job changes than was the case generations before.

A

career in real estate is one of those pursuits where the combined strength of past life experiences and acquired work skills can create a winning combination. Coupled with a positive attitude and great communication skills, it is amazing how many people have built extraordinary careers in real estate. On inspection it is clear that the top real estate performers come from diverse backgrounds; retailers, butchers, mechanics, teachers and nurses (to name a few) but they are all linked by a common desire to succeed and deliver outstanding customer service. I, myself, started my working career with Lands and Deeds and, believe it or not, while at school had aspirations of becoming an accountant. So it is no surprise to me to see people from all walks of life forge successful real estate careers. My decision to start in real estate was made over three decades ago and it is a decision that I have never regretted and an industry I continue to be passionate about. Real Estate offers opportunity and flexibility beyond those of regular 9 to 5 based roles. It is a dynamic and engaging industry that ultimately centres around people. Real Estate provides rewards for those that work hard and are committed to going the extra mile. Recently though a famous real estate coach, Tom Panos, identified that hard work alone is not the make-up of a top performing agent. It is when this dedication is combined with diligence, organisation and prudence he believes you have a recipe for success. Theories

aside, it is hard to identify who will make the “perfect” agent, however, in my eyes it should always come down to the following three things: 1. Service – A commitment to delivering outstanding service to your clients. Always doing what you say you are going to do and having a general desire to put people first! 2. Communication – It is vital to have clear and constant communication with clients regardless of the news that must be delivered. 3. Passion – Your attitude and energy is determined by your passion for the job so loving what you do is crucial. Many people that enter the industry as a second or even third career often talk about having wished they had started with real estate earlier. So my advice to you? Don’t delay. Call me for a confidential chat to find out how you can enter the wonderful world of real estate.

Art helps charities By Sarah Jarvis

A love of art and a quest to help charitable organisations succeed in a difficult fundraising environment is the motivation behind the first ever TakeHeART fundraising exhibition.

14 November 08, 2018 Metropol

C

hristchurch woman Jen Duncan is organising the exhibition to be held at the Great Hall at the Arts Centre from November 30 to December 2; with an official opening night on November 29. Jen says the concept behind TakeHeART was to help 10 organisations raise money through selling art on behalf of the artist. On selling their artwork, the artist will receive 65 percent of the total and the nominated charity will receive 25 percent. “The artists win, the people win and the charities win, so it’s a great result all round,” Jen says. Charities involved are The Cancer Society, Conductive Education, Upside Downs, Riding for the Disabled, Christchurch School of Music, Cystic Fibrosis Canterbury, Ski NZ, The Champion Centre, Mental Health Foundation and the Arts Centre Trust. “After working with small charities and fundraising groups I can see first-hand how hard it can be so I thought why not combine for one big event, benefiting everyone.” With previous fundraising and marketing experience, Jens says all of the charities and artists are supportive of the exhibition. Local artists include Svetlana Orinko, Ben Reid, Philip Beadle and others. “It’s a great way for everyone to come together (in a prime central location) and showcase the work that charities do and our talented artists.” Visit www.takehart.co.nz for further information on the event or phone Jen on 021 023 07322.

Metropol catches up with one of New Zealand’s most prolific and successful writers about putting pen to paper.

I

t was in a cricket pavilion in Cheltenham that Joe Bennett wrote a letter in brown ink on pink notepaper to a school in New Zealand. Fed up with his teaching job and having just suffered a duck in that afternoon’s cricket match, he was ripe for change. “I clearly remember the words I wrote on that letter: ‘Dear Sir, this is an unsolicited request for a job, and you’d be well advised to throw it in the bin’. “I thought if anyone answered that affirmatively, they’d be the sort of person I’d like to work for.” Three weeks later, Joe got a phone call; the voice on the other end said, ‘Keep your head down, Mr Bennett, the red tape is flying!’ “That was Max Rosser, Headmaster of Christ’s College at that time. A great man,” Joe says. Joe arrived in New Zealand in 1987; he vowed to come for one year only. “Then one year became two, I turned 30 and my feet stopped itching. I bought a house in Lyttelton, got myself a dog and that was that.”

But teaching was never in Joe’s career plan. “Until I was about 15, I dreamed of becoming a professional cricketer. Some of the great cricket writers, like Denzil Batchelor and A.A. Thomson possibly influenced my writing, in a way.” Apart from cricket, Joe’s fondness for man’s best friend is abundantly clear. Blue is a charming old boy with a lovely nature; he slumbers on the carpet while Joe recites Isabel Rutherford McLeod’s Lone Dog. “The reason I like it is aesthetic. It’s the aesthetic quality of language that’s always pleased me.” Around 1995 Joe began writing romance stories for women’s magazines. “They were all based on the same premise – square jawed Nigel meets Melissa, there’s some kind of impediment to their union, which is swept aside in the last paragraph, where they live happily ever after. Those truly awful stories sold so well that in the course of a year, I’d enough money to buy a second-hand car!” It was an article in literary magazine Quote Unquote that was to catapult

Joe into the world of full-time, freelance writing. “Graham Lay had written this article on how much he hated dogs and I fired a riposte back to Quote Unquote.” It was bad timing for Joe, as Quote Unquote was about to fold. A friend encouraged him to send the piece to The Press and, within a few days, Joe received a call from literary editor, Bruce Rennie, saying he liked the piece and did Joe have any more? Joe pulled out his typewriter and got busy. Good writing comes from technique, he says. “It’s craft, craft, craft. Writing a column’s like this: you’ve got a hunk of vague, loose ideas and associations and you find in those a shape that’s complete unto itself. That’s the exercise.” He cites his books Laugh, I Could Have Cried, a collection of his best columns, and Where Underpants Come From as two works he is most proud of. Meanwhile, he is currently writing yet another play for LAF (Lyttelton Arts Factory). “It’s based on Macbeth, but is set in a fish and chip shop with only two characters, Mack and Beth.”

Rachael Cone and Total Realty are delighted to welcome Brenda Urwin and Kaye Urwin to their team. Real estate must be in the blood as the relationship between them is a mother-daughter connection. Brenda Urwin is an experienced real estate agent with 12 years in the industry and you will find Brenda’s bubbly outgoing personality and professionalism very refreshing. Kaye Urwin has an outstanding career in real estate alongside her daughter’s and now joins Total Realty with all her experience as a salesperson to assist her clients with marketing and selling their property. Kaye’s persistence will see results combined with her communication and negotiating skills, you won’t be disappointed! “Total Realty charges a much more reasonable commission. Plus, they have an excellent reputation, great sales records, and experienced staff. I had multiple agents coming through this house to give appraisals. We’re moving overseas and needed a definite sale, but with a good price. It’s a bit much to ask that you pay $18,000 in real estate agent fees. Total Realty proved to be the smartest option for us. It was under offer after the first open home, and at a price we liked. More people need to use this company. They are truly sensational. Thank you Total Realty!”

Moving with the times

For 10 years, Total Realty has helped Cantabrians buy and sell property by “cutting costs, without cutting corners”.

C

elebrating the company’s anniversary recently, founder Rachael Cone reflected on how vast changes in the real estate market inspired this new business model. With a strong belief that industry commission rates were unjustified, Total Realty lowered its rates to 1 percent, eliminating franchise fees and unnecessary expenses. “With the age of the internet, it changed everything,” Rachael explains. “People used to ring their agent when

they wanted to buy a house and they’d rely on that agent to source the property and drive them around… there was a lot of work involved. Whereas now, that’s just totally gone by the way. “Buyers get home from work, jump on the internet and see everything that’s available. They call their agent direct, go to the open home and, if they like it, they make an offer. That’s the reality. We thought we’d cut to the chase and acknowledge this is the new way.” Starting out with a handful of agents,

Total Realty now has a waiting list of professionals eager to join the team, and all average more than 10 years’ experience. The branches have also expanded, and now service Rangiora, Nelson and Dunedin, as well as the flagship Christchurch office which is home to 20 agents. “There’s so much demand,” Rachael says. “Over the 10 years, we’ve saved Cantabrians over $70 million in commission, so it’s making a big difference which we’re really proud of.”

Owner Jackie Kirwan-Green says customers often remark that they wish they’d visited her store before going elsewhere. “Because everything here – from our Christmas décor, to our collections of ceramics, glassware, homeware, linen, furniture, luxury gifts and clothing - is truly exquisite merchandise.” Jackie mentions a recent arrival in-store, the uber-cool brand Le DD, as an example. This indoor/outdoor beachwear and accessories brand is Italian made, and described as entering a world of lightness and comfort. “Le DD unisex footwear, bags and homeware are ideal for baches and coastal living, or a day out on the beach.” With a slight shift from the usual European tone of her wares, Jackie is now an agent for R. M. Williams boots. “We’re thrilled to stock the latest in R.M. Williams boots – whether you’re a city woman or country girl, these handcrafted genuine leather boots are sophisticated, yet practical. They are a timeless classic in fashionable footwear.” For Christmas inspiration, Corso Merivale is hosting an in-store Christmas celebration (Hawkesbury Building, Aikmans road) on 8 November, 5pm – 8pm, where all of its new Christmas range will be on display. here has been a lot happening in our First Aid department,” Marketing Executive, Brodie McPhail says. “Our new Christchurch office has the benefit of two training rooms, which means we have more options when it comes to running our First Aid courses.” Brodie says that with the extra space comes the added bonus of more availability to run public courses, or to host group courses, at the new building, situated at 128 Wrights Road. “A huge improvement to this new complex is that we can now offer plenty of onsite parking for our course attendees,” Brodie says. The Christchurch team has grown with the recent addition of first aid trainer, Anatoly Khorozov. Other additional changes that will be noticed and appreciated include an upgrade to the First Aid booking site, www.triex.arlo.co, which offers a far superior customer experience. TriEx has been providing nationwide health, safety and wellness services for more than 30 years; its longevity undoubtedly based on the fact that the team consistently delivers excellence in its services. Ahead of the Pack

If you’re searching for new business opportunities, or selling an existing company, then LINK Business Brokers, are the people to call to get results.

I

t has multiple offices throughout the world - eight within New Zealand and a team of 14 sales specialists right here in the South Island. Link understands the significance of buying or selling a business and takes great pride in managing the process, ensuring the utmost confidentiality and honesty. With international contacts and an extensive database of business buyers and sellers, it is an expert at bringing businesses and purchasers together. The businesses for sale range from a large manufacturing firm to a small boutique café, but the end goal is always the same; ensuring businesses maximise their value and experience a smooth transition period. The Christchurch-based Link office has gone through its own transitional phase in the past year, when the franchise was bought back by the head office in August 2017. It has since implemented new management, processes and systems, and remains ahead of the pack, announcing record-breaking months in September and October. Link Sales Manager (Christchurch/ South Island) Katherine Shepherd, says

the local branch was experiencing a “massive growth phase”. “In certain businesses and certain industries, we’re finding ourselves in multi-offer situations at the moment.” Since the changeover, it has focused on expanding the South Island team by welcoming four new brokers. This brings the total number of independent contractors in the South Island area to 14, covering Christchurch, Nelson/ Marlborough, Dunedin, Wanaka and Queenstown. Link is the largest business brokerage companies in the world, with offices in Australia, America and the Philippines. “What it means to somebody who wants to sell their business,” explains Katherine, “is we have a wealth of networking... there’s over 100 Link business brokers throughout New Zealand, and we have a database of over 51,000 registered buyers nationwide.” The role of a business broker is very much a “proactive” sales role, says Katherine, but they draw heavily on their business and financial expertise. For most brokers, they have had careers in banking, accounting, or are former business owners themselves

looking for the next challenge. “It’s a great option for those who have owned their own business, sold it and think, what do I want to do now? As a broker, you have flexibility to be able to do what you want, to a point, and it’s a niche industry.” Being part of an international business, means the Link brand is known throughout the world, and no matter where buyers are throughout the globe, they can search the website for more than 200 South Island listings. “If we have a very specialist business we believe could potentially be (suited to) an off-shore buyer, or an acquisition for a business that’s not already existing in New Zealand, then we’ve got those contacts to get them in front of those people,” Katherine explains. “And, the luxury we have with a large team of brokers means they all have a specialist area. That could be because it’s the background they’ve been in, or because it’s a passion they have. “It means we have a specialist in hospitality, franchising, manufacturing, importing, distributing…so it’s anything from a café to a transport franchise.” Visit www.linkbusiness.co.nz for further information. Elegance & Attitude

Street Cred and exquisitely high quality unite in the Danish jewellery brand, Dyrberg/Kern.

T

he name of the jewellery fashion-house, now housed in a new Merivale Mall boutique (and in Ballantynes) is not the result of random musings. It’s the joining of surnames of its jewellery designers; Copenhagen-based Gitte Dyrberg and Henning Kern. The duo has designed edgy, covetable accessories since 1985. Fortunately, New Zealand swung in on the action early and DK jewellery has been on sale here for a couple of decades already. What’s so wonderful about these Scandi-cool treasures is their diversity. Within the Dyrberg/Kern design DNA

lies a wealth of gorgeousness, and plenty of stylistic contrast. Gitte and Henning started out with a design charter to produce pieces of beauty and luxury to be worn every day. They use authentic materials… ion plated gold, silver, stainless steel, Swarovski crystals and a kaleidoscope of semi-precious gemstones. Everything possesses design integrity and refinement. Some rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces are chunky, some delicate. There’s an aesthetic to appeal to everyone. It’s European artistic genius; even within the same piece there’s often a play between pleasing opposites.

There’s stunning detail. Part of the earring might feature a raw, opaque stone, which is set beside another gem of polished, glittery transparency. There’s something no-nonsense and satisfying about this Danish brand. Whether wearers prefer the beaten, multifaceted look, or a more uniform high-shine appearance, the end result is unfailingly sophisticated. To ensure the aesthetic their wearers choose can remain highly personal, Gitte and Henning design prolifically. They produce fashion-ranges twice each year and have iconic and classic pieces available. National director of Dyrberg/Kern Penny Wilson is noticing a trend toward colour. “It’s exciting, vibrant and creative; a brilliant way to hit refresh,” she says. Now that fashion has for several seasons shaken off any shyness about colour and intensity, accessory-lovers have yet more reason to go crazy. Deep or zingy hues partner fabulously with gold, as do pastels with silver, though there really are no rules. Here Dyrberg/Kern has paired mauves and purples with gold, clear crystals with silver, and rose quartz and other pinks with silver. Fashion’s Rising Star By Sarah Jarvis

From a classroom at the Hagley College School of Fashion to the fashion catwalks of New York and Milan, Christchurch fashion designer Georgia Hensley-Smith is proving you can do anything you set your mind to – even at 18 years of age. “I believe if you have a goal, you can achieve it,” she says.

“E

verything I’ve thought of doing so far has happened, despite any obstacles. If you’re passionate and believe in yourself as well as your abilities, you will succeed!” Georgia launched her clothing label GEOJ OFFICIAL in 2016 when she was 16 and in her first year of Fashion Studies at Hagley College, admitting she has always known she was destined to have a career in the fashion industry. Still processing her thoughts from showing her latest collections at the New York and Milan Fashion Week shows, Georgia says the experience taught her a lot. “I had a few customers wanting to buy my garments in New York but I wasn’t allowed to sell them, which was a bit disappointing. But on the positive side, my online platforms and profile gained a lot of attention.” Georgia’s Milan Fashion Week collection featured a beautiful combination of neutral tones,

Her New York Fashion Week collection was her “boldest yet”, featuring bright and eye-catching print, with tailored pieces. “The pieces are designed to be mixed and matched. Worn together or separately, they will put anyone on the best-dressed list.” Since her return to Christchurch, she is now concentrating on developing her shoe range and admits she is in talks with some department stores which have expressed interest in carrying her garments and footwear. “I’m really passionate about developing my shoes and have some designs already on the go,” she says. Georgia is also keen to help showcase local designers and wants to be able to hold local fashion shows where potential clients can collaborate directly with the designers. “I want to be able to help and inspire other young designers and showcase the talent that we have here.”

Enhancing your looks KM Surgical has cemented its position as the top tier provider of cosmetic, appearance and skin medicine.

N

ow located at Avenue Health 202 Bealey Ave, an experienced specialist and nursing team offer a hospital level facility for surgeries, with theatres at top specification, and day-stay surgery accreditation. KM Surgical has a surgical focus on advanced level local anaesthetic procedures rather than general anaesthesia. These procedures are safe with quick recovery. “We focus on achieving natural results with facial rejuvenation, liposuction and laser resurfacing,” Dermatologist and Director Doctor Ken Macdonald says. KM Surgical offers a Vertical Vector Facelift (MACS lift), which is very effective at correcting sagging facial tissue, such as jowls, neck and cheeks. It works by tightening tissues under the skin. “For good results you have to tighten tissues under the skin,” he says. Upper and lower eyelid rejuvenation is a popular option also, and severe sun damage can be treated with laser resurfacing. KM Surgical also offers a full range

of appearance medicine treatments, such as injectables and thread lifting. The laser suite caters for an extensive range of options: veins, nails, tattoos and scars. KM Surgical also has expertise in body contouring with tumescent liposuction, which remains the definitive treatment for fat removal, and it can be combined with augmentation via fat transfer to face, buttocks, breasts and scars. Dr Macdonald says they have been building the cosmetic practice for 15 years, but the field is always advancing, and the team ensures it is at the forefront of new approaches and technology. Treatments can usually be scheduled within a month of the initial consultation, but the team strongly encourages clients to discuss options thoroughly, think carefully and obtain sound advice before they go ahead with elective surgical procedures. With KM Surgical having its own facility, the procedures are cost effective and finance is available. “We do not advise overseas cosmetic surgeries which are high risk.”

Elegance with Edge With its first store opening in 2006, Repertoire has now grown to eight stores throughout New Zealand. In Christchurch, we’re very fortunate to have two boutiques, one in the BNZ Centre and one in The Colombo.

C

o-owner, Meghan Maher, says its business concept, right from the beginning, has been to ensure its stores are customer service driven. “Customers are warmly welcomed by our trained stylists. Our staff are real women who really care. There’s so much love in our stores!” Meghan expands on the point of difference in the brand. “We offer complimentary sessions in which a woman is given headto-toe styling in a safe and cocooned environment; it’s a tranquil space in which they can try on as many garments as needed to find the look that’s perfect for them.” Repertoire releases two New Zealand made collections in-store and online every month. “Every single time a customer visits our store, there will be a new collection on

the racks since the last time they visited,” Meghan says. Meghan says the core philosophy is to inspire and support women with clothing that gives the wearer everyday selfconfidence. “Our garments are elegantly relaxed but with an edge. When customers walk down the street, heads will turn. Our clothes have the ‘wow’ element!” Another key component to its garments is their ability to transcend from daywear into evening wear. “Our dresses, for instance, can be worn with sneakers or flats by day, but add a pair of heels, a pretty purse and earrings, and it suddenly becomes a dress to take to the races, or any ‘after five’ gathering.” Meghan says the clothes are very current and they follow global trends, but not

slavishly. “We look at what’s happening overseas, but we consider the New Zealand climate and the New Zealand customer.” For those with wanderlust, the capsule range is ideal for travel, as they fold into nothing and are extremely crease-resistant. Education, communication and connection is hugely important to Repertoire. “Social media is a fantastic tool in that we can share, update and guide our customers through the whole process of feeling confident about every beautiful, unique garment hanging in their wardrobe,” Meghan says. “We want women to reconnect with their wardrobes.” At two locations: The Colombo, phone 03 366 1200, The BNZ Centre, phone 03 281 8434 or visit www.repertoire.co.nz.

here is a grace combined with purity in the design up there, created by the elegant whitewashed floor tiles and exquisite English wallpaper, which serve to accelerate your journey to calm. Owner Prue Macdonald loves “working with women, making them feel better about themselves”. It’s a lifetime love affair, for while Prue has been running clinics for 14 years, she has been intrigued from childhood with this industry that is progressive and constantly evolving. The Medi Spa aspect of the clinic is a passion, and along with microdermabrasion, dermal needling for collagen replacement is becoming very popular. Prue is delighted that she can now offer pain-free IPL hair removal. It

is available for all parts of the body, and Prue is offering 25 per cent discount from the website price for each part of the body treated until Christmas, and with special events on the radar, a full-body flawless Argan Oil Moroccan Tan is only $29 for all of Cup and Show Week. IPL hair removal is also available for men. Prue finds that back treatments are popular and also legs for those involved in multi-sport. Prue says the movement to antiaging is huge and she and her team of three offer a selection of Image facials using Image Products, a range of high-potency results-driven skincare that comes from the United States, to rejuvenate skin. Top service recognised Unichem Cashel Pharmacy has much to be proud of. Recently it was awarded the Pharmacy of the Year award. Talking to owner, holistic pharmacist and qualified nutritional and environmental practitioner, Annabel Turley, it is easy to see why.

hen it comes to customer service, we go that extra mile and we offer quite different services to other pharmacies,” Annabel says. “For instance, one of the many services we offer is in appearance medicine, with a registered nurse working on-site, three days a week, providing anti-wrinkle injections and other associated appearance medicine services.” The pharmacy which is now the only pharmacy in the CBD’s retail precinct also offers: a natural health clinic, a weight loss clinic, a women’s health clinic, a stress clinic, and most impressively, a DNA genetic profiling clinic that maps 54 genes. “The genetic profiling is a road map for wellness. It enables clients to be proactive with their health, because though our genes never change, once we find out where we may have future problems – be it cardiovascular, or whatever – we can make the necessary changes in diet and lifestyle to keep us as healthy as possible,” Annabel says. When you factor in that this quite extraordinary pharmacy also provides a New Zealand Post outlet, a photo laboratory service (photo printing and passport photos), and a dry-cleaning service, amongst its myriad of other services, it gives an idea of what it took to achieve the award it so truly deserved. T

he facial jobs that need to be done can be checked out in the rear-view mirror when stationary, in good daylight. There are delete-able horrors you don’t notice in uneven bathroom light, like an attack of hair-sprout in the wrong spots. If you don’t fancy the tweezing-out process, there are plenty of hair dressers, manscapers and beauty therapists who are happy to help. Eyebrows and hair can be tidied up simultaneously; always a boon to selfconfidence. Be careful to tell the therapist your desired outcome, however. You may choose to darken your brows slightly, leaving them slightly imperfect and natural-looking. Also – at this time of year, thirsty facial, neck and arm skin

Design your own all benefit from attention. It’s said that unmoisturised skin ages 40 percent faster than the regularly moisturised. A clay mask from the pharmacy is the ideal starting point. When washing this off, use tepid, lukewarm water and an old flannel. This is great skinpreparation for moisturiser. Choose a moisturiser with a pleasing feel, unscented. When unperfumed, you can get closer in around the eyes without reaction. Fatty moisturising creams are often scent-neutral. Next, add some sharp shades! For the rest of the face, neck and arms, moisturiser should include a good sun-protection factor. Add deodorant, gorgeous aftershave and clean filed nails, and you’re handsome.

Breathe S easier BREATHE EZY is the pioneering New Zealand company that began selling Pure New Zealand AirÂŽ to Asia in 2016.

ince that time the company has expanded with an increased range of products and now Breathe Ezy 60 PLUS is being Pure Air enhanced with 60 percent oxygen. This product is aimed specifically at people involved in strenuous activity and pre or post sports. Breathe Ezy collects air from locations in the Alps and passes it through filters to remove any trace of pollen, dust and most bacteria. Independent tests show the level of particles in our product is less than 0.03 parts per million, many times purer than WHO recommendations. Increasing the oxygen level to 60 percent has produced a safe, effective and useful product that removes any of the risks associated with breathing near 100 percent pure oxygen

The use of oxygen has been a long tradition to enhance energy prior to activity or for warm-down however, aware of some of the risks associated with breathing pure oxygen, Breathe Ezy undertook research and trials to ascertain the most useful mix of oxygen and air. Typically, the air we breathe contains about 20 percent oxygen; increasing the oxygen in Breathe Ezy 60 Plus is an ideal solution for people involved in sports who seek safe and rapid warm-down and re-oxygenation after exercise. Online purchases only at www.breathezy.biz $14.99 a seven-litre canister of about 150 breaths. Breathe Ezy is a proud sponsor of the International Golf Association of New Zealand.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow While the balding process is entrenched in our psyche as a common rite of passage for men of a certain age, female pattern thinning is almost as common, but much less known, let alone discussed.

D

r Padmaja Redekar, of Hairmantra Trichology Clinic says because women rarely develop bald patches, their hair can thin by a full 50 percent before they become aware of it. “Some discover they no longer have enough hair for styles such as a bun, or they can see more of their scalp, or the hair recedes at the temples,” she says. “Clues that point to possible hair loss are developing acne, or new hair growth on other parts of the face and body.” Dr Padmaja says some people are genetically susceptible to the hormone DHT, a hair losslinked androgen present in both men and women. Simple aging, or physical or mental

stress can trigger a sensitivity to DHT. “Life stages such as puberty and menopause, or hysterectomy and medical issues such as endometriosis or anaemia can also be a trigger.” Unlike hair fall, hair thinning does not resolve itself and the earlier treatment starts the better. Dr Padmaja treats both internally and externally with her organic range by Apteka and offers low-level laser therapy which is also effective. Dr Padmaja says we need to become as educated on our hair health and aging as we are for our skin. “You don’t have to put up with hair loss, and once you are over 50 regular check-ups are a great idea.”

A Is Mesh Safe

for hernia surgery? When it comes to hernia surgery patients can take comfort in the fact mesh can be used without fear, with research showing no difference in pain rates when mesh or sutures are used for repair, The Hernia Clinic’s Ross Roberts says.

n experienced surgeon specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of hernias, Ross explains there has been much controversy in the media regarding the use of mesh in gynaecological procedures, causing unnecessary widespread stress and anxiety for patients undergoing hernia surgery. “Media coverage has unfortunately brought the good results of mesh hernia repair into disrepute by categorising all mesh operations as the same,” Ross states. Published newspaper reports have highlighted associated risks of infection, erosion and chronic pain but haven’t addressed the real issue which is the anatomical placement of the mesh itself, he says. “The use of mesh for abdominal and groin hernia repair is safe. Most reported problems relate to the location of the material and not the material itself. “The use of polypropylene (the most common type of mesh) is not a new material and has been used for hernia surgery since the early 1990s. The use of mesh in surgery to repair inguinal or groin hernias is well established here in New Zealand (and internationally) and is considered the procedure of choice.” A systematic review published in 2018 concluded that there was

“no difference in chronic pain rates when comparing non mesh repairs with open and laparoscopic mesh repairs”. The team at the Christchurchbased Hernia Clinic is widely experienced in all forms of hernia repair including keyhole and the more traditional surgical techniques. Clinic staff always survey their patients and seek feedback following surgery. “We are confident that it’s safe and that’s the conclusion we have reached after surveying our patients after surgery.” Hernias are particularly common disorders, especially in men, and can only be successfully treated by surgical repair. The past requirement for prolonged time away from work and exercise following surgical hernia repair no longer applies today. For ventral hernias with fascial defects greater than 2cm in diameter and all adult groin hernias, mesh should be used to reinforce the tissue repair. If not, the hernia recurrence rate without mesh is unacceptably high. “Mesh can significantly reduce hernia recurrence rates.” Information regarding hernia repair options is available freely on request. Contact The Hernia Clinic on 03 961 6666 or email info@herniaclinic.co.nz. Metropol November 08, 2018 45

A smile to love

Getting dentures can be a daunting prospect, and the last thing patients want is a generic, or ‘horsey’ smile, says internationally renowned clinical dental technician, Richard Greenlees of Christchurch practice, Lovebite.

Characterisation of the teeth and gums on this stunning Lovebite denture has created an incredibly natural looking smile.

“P

eople get new or replacement dentures for many reasons, but one thing is true for every patient; they want to love the new smile reflected back to them in the mirror and feel confident when they go out into the world.” Richard creates expertly crafted bespoke dentures, which are unique to every patient. “Teeth are as different as fingerprints and vary greatly depending on a person’s age, sex and race. I work one-on-one with patients to create a smile that allows them to feel like themselves again. My dentures also provide the correct support and structure to give them a more youthful appearance.” As a reference while he works, Richard often uses his patients’ own photographs showing their natural smile. His dentures are like artworks, with each tooth individually crafted with colouring and small nuances to match his patients’ individuality and character. Not only do Lovebite teeth look real, the whole structure and shape of a patient’s face is transformed with Richard’s top-ofthe-line dentures – which feature his signature ‘denture lift’. “With appropriate facial support, the facial tissues are brought back into the correct position, lips are

reformed and beauty is restored,” he says. It is the interior architecture of a Lovebite denture that helps to create a more youthful appearance by recovering the face and skeletal shape that can be lost after years of wearing old dentures. To achieve these results, Richard has created worldleading techniques, which are now internationally recognised. He is regularly asked to lecture worldwide, and in April was the keynote speaker at the international DTG Symposium in Frankfurt, where he demonstrated his unique methods on a Christchurch patient, flown to Germany by the event organisers. His vast experience includes 15 years running his own clinic in the prestigious Harley Street, London, where he treated people from all walks of life, from barrow boys to the rich and famous, politicians, actors and musicians. In addition to dentures, Richard also carries out crown and bridge, veneer and implant work, in conjunction with like-minded dental surgeons who complement his creative and aesthetic work. There is nothing more satisfying for Richard than to see his patients leave the Lovebite studio with a beautiful new smile, and their selfconfidence and identity restored. Efficient Fun Option By Peter Walker

Many innovative projects are making Christchurch an exciting place to be – the latest is the addition of hundreds of electronic scooters gracing the streets.

B

y now you have probably seen the black, white and (lime) green scooters. Stroll from South City to Cathedral Square and you will see smiling riders zipping in and out of traffic. The scooters can also be ridden from Halswell to Redwood, Sumner to Hornby. American based Lime is the company behind the scooters and operates in more than 80 places around the world, claiming its network of electric bikes, electric scooters and pedal bikes have provided more than six million rides. The Christchurch operation and a similar one in Auckland launched on October 15 with local contractors collecting, charging, and re-distributing the scooters each day.

Using one is simple. Download and set up the Lime App, scan the QR code and off you go. Follow the usual traffic laws, use some common sense as to safety – scooters can be ridden on the road and footpaths, and a helmet is recommended but not compulsory. Each scooter has a range of about 50-60 kilometres and a top speed of 27 kmh. Unlocked for a dollar and .30c per minute, you are scooting for less than $20 per hour. “They’re fantastic!” says one CBD rider. The scooters are an efficient, fun alternative mode to make that appointment down town, whether it’s two blocks or two kilometres, or across the city if you are more daring.

A head start in life By Keiran Bleach

A new charity is thinking ‘inside the box’ as it gives Southern Lakes mothers and newborn babies a helping hand.

T

wo-and-a-half years of hard work by a group of dedicated locals culminated in the recent launch of the Queenstown Lakes Baby Box Charitable Trust. It was a proud day for its chairperson Vanessa van Uden, who was the Queenstown Lakes District Mayor from 2010 to 2016. She says the idea came from a Tackling Poverty workshop held in 2016 and the realisation that many Southern Lakes residents don’t have family living nearby to support them.

Based on a Finnish model, Baby Box gifts new mothers some basic resources to give their little ones a safe, comfortable start in life. The sturdy box is the size of a bassinette (so the baby could sleep in it) and contains a mattress, sheets, a woollen blanket, clothes, a merino sleeping bag, a toy, a book, a bib, a reusable nappy, and other useful items. Each box costs the trust $250 and Vanessa estimates 500 a year are needed in Queenstown Lakes. Central Lakes Trust and Community Trust South provided

funding and many generous individuals and businesses – from knitters and quilters to Wonky Donkey book author Craig Smith – have donated time, products or money. “The ultimate dream is that communities all around New Zealand start to do this for their own community,” Vanessa says. For more information visit www.facebook.com/ BabyBoxQueenstownLakes/. To offer practical or financial help, phone Vanessa on 027 229 6008 or Jan Maxwell on 027 233 7934.

Phil Leslie (L) and Max Bremner (R)

Brighter days ahead By Sarah Jarvis

Keeping afloat in Christchurch’s hospitality industry is “tough” and those who have managed to “ride out the storm” should be praised for their dedication to the city says Oxford Group co-owner and hospitality stalwart Max Bremner.

Metropol November 08, 2018 61

“T

here are a lot of innovative people here who have put their balls on the line and didn’t take their money out of Christchurch – when a lot did,” he states. While the straight-talker is trying to stay optimistic about the city’s hospitality industry, he says there are many issues which still need addressing, including a lack of decision making, leadership and financial prowess within local government. “We need to have a council that encourages events which benefit our establishments – and preferably ones that are not anti-hospitality. “Christchurch needs to become a sticky gateway not a slippery gateway. We need to attract those visitors hoping off a plane here into the city and we need to have things here for them to do.” Max says events need to be co-ordinated so that they don’t “empty bars out”. “Building things like the Margaret Mahy playground and the new library are good but they don’t bring people through our doors. Neither do events like the Night Noodle Markets.” On the positive, he sees Christchurch as “evolving” and looks forward to the Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre opening. “I see the worm turning slowly. The new Hoyts complex is marvellous and new eateries like Little High are slowly bringing people back into the city. We just need things to happen faster.” Some of the businesses he and Oxford Group business partner Darryll Park own include the popular Fat Eddies, Original Sin and Kong establishments on The Terrace and The Bealey on Bealey Avenue. Max, who prefers to work in the background and leave the limelight to Darryll, says he’s relieved The Terrace (formerly The Strip) is finally taking off. He pays tribute to local businessman and fellow hospitality character Antony Gough who he believes helps keep Christchurch ticking. “Hospitality is a hard business to be in and a lot of people come into it wearing rose-coloured spectacles and a lot don’t make it.” Max jokes he practically “lives” with his accountant who he sees one or two hours a day. “To survive you have to have a business head. It’s no longer about being a chef or publican running a pub.” While he would like to see Christchurch’s rebuild happen a lot faster, he’s still investing, pointing to his latest project, a 39-unit motel beside his purpose built hostel complex All Stars Inn on Bealey Avenue. To be run by All Stars Inn general manager Phil Leslie, the new development is called 24Seven and will open in March next year. Phil, the former general manager of Base backpackers, backs Max’s enthusiasm for a quicker rebuild. He says the Christchurch City Council needs to get on with building the city’s stadium which will greatly benefit accommodation providers. “It will be a great asset for the city and when major events are on it will mean that every room will be full.”

Blooming Delicious By Melinda Collins

When it comes to summer entertaining, you want to impress your guests with eats that look as good as they taste. Why not up your culinary game with edible owers?

W

hile flowers have been used by cultures throughout the world for thousands of years, it seems these beautiful blooms have now gone upmarket, adorning the plates of high-end restaurants globally. Edible flowers not only make colourful and tasty additions to your cooking, they can also transform your summer drinks into talking points. Just freeze your flowers in ice cubes and add to your summer tipples. We look at 10 blooming delicious examples.

1.

All in for alliums: Alliums include the cultivated onion, garlic, scallion, shallot, leek and chives, all which make for delicious additions to green salads, potato and pasta salads and dips.

6.

Forage some borage: The fuzzy-leaved herb borage has sky-blue flowers with a light cucumber taste. Add to fruit salads, green salads or freeze in ice cubes for cold drinks.

2.

Never forget nasturtiums: Nasturtium blossoms have a peppery flavour like watercress. All colours and varieties are tasty in salads or as garnishes, with their leaves able to be eaten too.

7.

Cute little chamomile: A pretty plant that graces the herb garden with masses of small flowers, chamomile offers a tasty apple-like flavour.

3.

Must-have marigolds: With a mildly citrus taste, marigold petals can be sprinkled into salads. With colours ranging from pure yellow to orange and red, they are as much a feast for the eyes as they are for the belly.

8.

Newly minted: All flowers of the mint family make for tasty additions to your cooking. Try lemon balm or spearmint in iced tea.

9.

Game of squash: Squash blossoms can be used as a garnish, made into fritters or chucked into a stir-fry.

10

Stop and eat the roses: All roses are edible, with miniature varieties ideal to garnish ice cream and desserts, while larger petals can be sprinkled on desserts or salads.

4. 5.

Pretty as a pansy: Pansies have a wintergreen flavour and are pretty on cakes and other desserts. Sweet as honeysuckle: Although its berries are poisonous, honeysuckle blossoms make a pretty, and safe, addition to salads.

Toast to tours Kaye Souter’s passion for wine is infectious and extends beyond just drinking it.

A

s the owner of Explore Waipara Wine Tours, Kaye prides herself on offering unique winery tours individually catered to her clients.

“The point of difference with our business is we aim to make our wine tours as fun and as memorable as possible by adding those little extra details that make a

big difference,” she says. Explore Waipara’s full day wine tours depart Christchurch and travel through the beautiful wine region of Waipara. Clients enjoy incredible scenery and plenty of photo opportunities, delectable wine tasting at a minimum of four wineries along with a luscious lunch, topped off with entertaining stories about the wine producing region. Water and snacks and your own tasting booklet are also provided and all tour guides hold current first aid certificates. Tours range from the lead-in Explore Waipara Tour to the Ultimate Waipara Experience which includes a helicopter ride, truffle demonstration, private winemaker’s tour, award winning restaurants and of course, delectable wines. Learn about the history of wine in New Zealand and travel through the beautiful rugged landscape of Canterbury to explore the best wines of the region. Raised in Christchurch, Kaye’s background is in hospitality, liquor retail and she has recently spent four years in Central Otago working at a prominent winery. She has a passion for wine and spirits and she never stops learning. “We don’t just drink wine, we live wine.” Visit www.explorewaipara.co.nz and enter the code Metropol for $40 off tours in November.

Tasty traditional treats

Take high quality ingredients, add in an experienced baker and chef, mix in a passion for producing tasty traditional fare and you have Fork in Fresh in Rolleston.

“T

here’s a demand for good food,” Fork in Fresh owner Angela Morrison says. “For us it’s all about using local products and producing traditional tasting food. We use butter pastry and only the best ingredients. We may pay more for it but when it comes down to it, it’s all about the taste rather than the cost.” Working alongside her pastry chef and baker husband Luke Leis, Angela herself is

an experienced chef. The couple formerly ran a bakery/café in Palm Beach on the Gold Coast but moved back to New Zealand after their twins (now teenagers) were born. While Angela admits running a business now is “a completely new ball game due to social media” she says providing customers the best in service and product remains the same. “We can cater to any dietary needs and there’s not much we can’t do if we put our heads together.”

From donut and meringue towers, cakes to fresh baked bread, gingerbread houses to pies, Fork in Fresh does it all. “We like a challenge and are good at everything,” Angela laughs. For scrumptious fare head to the Facebook page or pop into the shop at 855 Jones Road, Rolleston. Phone them on 0274 225 379. Open Monday to Friday from 5am to 4pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

The Freshest Option While you’re sipping your morning coffee and reading the paper, Christopher and Jenny Gray are probably already out on their property along with pickers, harvesting their asparagus crop – those green spears of deliciousness that we wait all winter for.

“O

ur asparagus season begins on 1 October and goes through to the end of the year,” says Christopher whose family has farmed in the Motukarara area for four generations. “The soil here is high in sodium and eminently suitable for growing asparagus of the very best quality.” The Grays planted their first bed of asparagus in 2003 and maintain their strict quality control from field to grading shed. They are immensely proud of their product and stand behind every single bunch. No rubber bands hold these spears together, instead they are bound up with tape bearing the Grays’ name and address. “The tape says ‘This is our asparagus.’ The asparagus is sold at farmers’ markets

in Lincoln, Lyttleton Rudolf Steiner School grounds, Ombersley Terrace Opawa, and of course at the farm gate – 1905 SH75 (the Christchurch to Akaroa Road). In addition, you can find the Grays’ asparagus on the menu at several top Canterbury restaurants, including the award-winning Roots in Lyttelton. While tender, slim asparagus spears are traditionally sought after, Jenny says some people prefer the wider fleshier tips instead. “Every growing season is a little different, but we always have sufficient product to supply the farmers’ markets and to supply MG’s Packhouse which sends the asparagus on to supermarkets.”

Universo Brasserie & Bar’s new owners Madlen and Wayne Shaw are passionate about great food and impeccable service so it’s no wonder they couldn’t stay out of the hospitality industry for long.

74 November 08, 2018 Metropol

A

fter a “few months off” in Europe, the couple say they are delighted to have found “the perfect opportunity” in Christchurch again. The Shaws started Addington’s The Pedal Pusher gastropub in 2012 and Rolleston’s The Pedal Pusher in 2017. They also owned central city café, Therapy and have previously both worked on cruise ships. Wayne says he is excited about the menu that Universo will offer, which is reminiscent of the food he prepared while working on luxury yachts. Madlen says she is looking forward to being “front of house”, making sure Universo customers enjoy their food and the experience. Retaining most of the staff, including head chef Mark Wilson, it’s business as usual at Universo however, Madlen says there are a few exciting new things happening – including the introduction of a brunch service and quick lunch menu. “We will now open at 9am, seven days a week, so that customers can enjoy our new breakfast menu. “We will also be introducing live music during weekends and offering cabinet food, so that you can buy a sandwich or salad to go.” Madlen says they will be keeping a few of the restaurant’s signature dishes like the Yorkshire Pudding and Lamb Shoulder dishes, but are also introducing more fresh, seasonal produce from the Canterbury region. “Visitors want to taste locally sourced produce when they come to Canterbury and that’s what we will give them.” In the next few months, Madlen and Wayne will be focusing on building up their staff and attracting customers back. “This restaurant is only a year old and was very successful until just a short time ago. We want to restore that quickly and get on with growing a fantastic destination for Christchurch locals and visitors,” Madlen says. Universo is located beside the Christchurch Art Gallery and has the support of the Christchurch City Council. Mary Richardson, Christchurch City Council’s General Manager Citizens and Community says, “Universo has become an important part of the gallery experience. We’re excited to see this continue under Madlen and Wayne’s ownership, as they respond to the needs of our daily gallerygoers. “They bring with them a wealth of experience in the hospitality industry and will complement what our gallery has to offer.”

A major part of our company philosophy is helping charitable organisations with their work,” she says. “The Maia Health Foundation is one such charity and Ronald McDonald House is another. Events are also a marvellous way of showcasing what we do.” The menu for the event was indeed a showcase of superbly designed and prepared dishes made from beautiful local ingredients, much of it donated by the community’s hunters and gatherers – from crayfish and paua to blue cod and fresh seasonal vegetables. “It was a truly wonderful Spring

At the centre of it all was our Twentyfour Catering Co’s signature dish – 21 day aged Canterbury fillet of beef with Cafe de Paris butter and shiraz jus paired with spring carrots glazed with honey and topped with toasted almonds.” Chantelle explains that she designs all the menus and dishes for the events they have been asked to cater. “I am the first point of contact for a client and each menu is individual to that client and to the particular type of event. We are not a ‘tick the box’ catering company. Rather we take real pride in adding special personal touches to an event. “For us it’s not only about delivering delicious food, but also ensuring that the

utdoor spaces should really be thought of as an extension of your living room and that definitely applies to entertaining. Furnishings should be as comfortable and attractive as interior furnishings to really maximise the indoor/ outdoor flow. Garden furniture has come a long way from cheap, plastic, flimsy furniture and the options to create the ultimate outdoor setting are extensive. If you’re thinking of buying new

furniture first consider the look you want to achieve. With the wide variety of styles available, consider choosing a style that harmonises with the architectural design of your home. Comfort is important, so shop where you can see the furniture on display. Sit in the chairs, relax in the lounges and check the height of tables to make sure they’re functional. Lastly, construction quality is important and you should buy from a reputable manufacturer willing to back products.

Fresh new house plans out now. Our already huge range of house plan designs is growing, meaning you have even more choice. Simply choose a plan and go with it, or use one as a starting point and customise it to suit. The choice is yours. Get inspired at orangehomes.co.nz

Irrigation for your garden Summer and watering go hand in hand and, as temperatures heat up, watering in the right spot at the right time is essential. Here are some simple tips for keeping on top of the watering this summer. When and where: The best practice is to water early in the morning or late afternoon; it is not recommended to water late at night as fluctuating temperatures can cause fungus to breed. Watering in the morning, or around 4pm also ensures you won’t lose this precious resource to evaporation. Concentrate watering evenly around the base of the plants roots rather than the foliage. Mulch: Use mulch to help conserve moisture. In summer mulch blocks sunlight from reaching the soil and therefore helps keep the soil moist. Mulch is also important to help keep a consistent soil temperature, this is especially important with fruiting crops such as tomatoes.

Take the time: Use enough water to sufficiently reach the deeper roots of the plant. Water needs a moment to seep into the soil, so water each plant then, when the water has soaked in, water again. Irrigation: Have you considered installing an efficient and easy automated irrigation system that will take the hassle out of watering the lawn and garden for years to come? With an irrigation system, you can rest easy in the knowledge that your garden will be getting the right amount of water at the right time of day. It’s the ideal for this time of year, with an irrigation system ensuring your garden will be watered correctly while you are away on summer holidays.

Get in the experts: With so much to consider, including the influence your water pressure will have on your irrigation system, getting the experts in can save a lot of time and stress. The Oderings Landscaping team takes all the variables into consideration and can install a personalised system that meets the specific needs of your garden. Get in touch with the Oderings Landscaping team to ensure you have an irrigation system that gives your garden great coverage with the right amount of water and meets your budget. How do you incorporate colour? Painting neutral/white walls means there is plenty of scope to adapt with art and decor. In boys’ rooms l personally like primary colours, white, soft blues and contrast piping. For girls’ rooms, soft plush pink is very in at the moment. Adding these colours through the duvet, throws and cushions means it can be changed as your child grows without much cost. If the child is high energy, add colours that are soft and calming, and vice versa.

Angelique Armstrong Armstrong Interiors Ltd

Child’s Play When it comes to designing for the littlies in ones’ life, it’s not all child’s play. Metropol talks to award-winning interior designer Angelique Armstrong about creating inspiring spaces.

What are the most important things to consider when interior designing a child’s bedroom? Layout, easy flow to the bed and around the room, ensuring there is enough storage for toys jewellery, sports gear, clothes etc, such as under the bed, a window seat, box shelving on the walls or an ottoman with lid. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to have good storage; baskets, brightly painted shoe boxes, fabric-covered buckets with ribbons will help children clean up easily. Nooks for sleeping, playing and storing special things will also make children feel happy, safe and inspired every day no matter their ages.

What advice would you give parents looking to update a space for their child? Remembering that this is the only space in the house your child can actually call their own, it’s about making it suit; what they like, favourite colours and their hobbies. The challenge is to design a space that will reflect their interests and personality but can grow with them through the years. Create some fun, such as a large pinboard for photos, certificates, artworks and fairy lights. How can Armstrong Interiors help create your child’s room? With our knowledge of wall colours, we can get this right first time. We also have a large range of fabrics and beautiful bed linens. We can also make drapes and cushions. We design dedicated storage areas and can measure your area, design what you need, quote and get one of our specialised joinery companies to make and install for you, removing all the stress from beginning to end. We all know we’re supposed to ‘blankcanvas’ our homes before a ‘For-Sale’ sign gets within reach. So that means many of us will buy a ‘whited-out’ home.

O

nce installed, life ramps up and we can get stuck in this white way of living… which is superb if that’s your chosen aesthetic. But inspiration abounds on ways to live with hits of colour; even relatively dark backdrop tones. Take a look at the interiors of the swanky hotels of the world, and then at the insides of cute, rustic mountain cabins in remoter regions of the United States, Canada or

anywhere something indie has been artfully thrown together. You’ll probably find they’re suffused with colour and texture. Also, you’ll notice they elicit an emotional response. You just want to be there, soaking up the atmosphere, looking up at the stars, or out at the lake. These are enveloping, more voluptuous interiors. They cater to our basic needs for shelter and refuge; things might not match, but that’s part of the charm.

e We’re returning to times where brownieorangey spice-colours, muddy greys, soft pinks, teals and olives are the comforting ones. Finally we’re allowing our surrounds to be warm and strong again. More often than not, it’s transporting us to times spent at Nana and Poppa’s bach, or great auntie Margaret’s place, where love and care were part of the feel-good equation. Large-scale nostalgic floral prints are back, as are textural weaves not seen in force since the 1970s. Add in some velvet and furry-feeling rugs and cushions, and the welcome factor is in residence. It’s not enough to merely tolerate your everyday surroundings. Homewares stores, even op-shops are full of treasures like coffee mugs or vases (or almost anything) in warm-toned, rose-tinted, lemon or apple-green items. This is part of life where gut responses equal style-guidance. If you find yourself adoring a purple and mustard fabric off-cut, buy it and turn it into a cushion. If you hate something toogeneric that currently lurks in your kitchen, someone else might love it, so give it away. There’s no moral superiority to be grasped by holding onto unloved furnishings or table-mats. If your living spaces feel cold, it can just be a matter of adding a rich backdrop wallpaper, a riotous jar of flowers or sculptural stalks, and some turmeric-toned, tactile European pillows. Yellow rather than white-toned lighting is a biggie too. Once you’ve decided on your desired elements, the shopping fun begins. A domestic haven full of personality and charm will result.

A positive way forward Architect Craig South suggests a new campaign promoting Christchurch’s spirit of exploration is a good fit with the city’s past and its current culture of innovation.

C

hristchurch has come a long way since the earthquakes, but we have yet to attract enough people to the city to get it really humming. Not everyone will agree on how this is to be done, but ChristchurchNZ has certainly front footed the challenge this month by launching a new promotional campaign. Called The Christchurch Story, it invites newcomers ‘to explore the opportunity’ available in the city. A promotional video has been released, seeking to embed ‘exploration’ as a defining motif for Ōtautahi/ Christchurch throughout its history and into the future. It is an inclusive approach that acknowledges shared Māori and European heritage, Antarctic connections, the women’s suffrage movement and a legacy of excellence in research and development. As architects, we embrace this emphasis on exploration and welcome the campaign’s implicit support for innovative development. It’s an approach that will likely resonate particularly strongly for those involved in local cutting edge endeavours in engineering and IT. At the very least, ‘exploration’ is a word worth thinking about and acting on in our day to day lives.

82 November 08, 2018 Metropol

Of course, the broader hope is that this campaign will deliver a promotional punch that will plant this city squarely in front of potential investors, visitors, migrants and students. Let’s hope it finds a receptive audience, nationally and globally. If the forecasts are right, we really do have to come up with something bold to draw more people to Christchurch in order to plug a predicted workforce gap of 73,500 by 2031. How we respond to this campaign, as individuals and within the local business community, will be important in helping to build future prosperity. There is potential to unify the city’s predominantly small and medium-sized businesses behind this one marketing goal, (though no doubt the theme could be communicated in a myriad of different ways). That’s what ChristchurchNZ will be hoping for, at any rate. If it is to succeed, Christchurch City Council and ChristchurchNZ will need to keep this campaign at the forefront of their activities. A digital toolkit of photos, videos and information has been produced to help local businesses get on board, but more resourcing will likely be needed to drive the campaign forward in coming months. Growing this city will require more than just a slogan: it will take a long term commitment. The Christchurch Story is like the city’s calling card: ‘here we are – come and explore with us’. We need to work together to push that invitation out beyond the city. For the ones who answer the call, what will they find? A liveable 21st century city, bursting with new ideas and new architecture, located close to mountains and sea. They will find a forwardthinking city, prepared to try concepts such as shared electric scooters and cycleways. They will find a city simultaneously incubating innovation and fostering community values. I’m sure they will also find a warm welcome. Christchurch is a great place to work and live. In today’s increasingly connected and crowded world, we are a place worthy of investment. To be known as ‘a city of explorers’ sounds good to me. www.caarc.co.nz

Newly Minted By Melinda Collins

Each passing season brings with it the perfect opportunity to introduce a new aesthetic into the home and, although it seems somewhat cliché to defer to green tones when it comes to spring’s seasonal spruce-up, we can think of nothing cooler than mint to make our interiors sing.

A

ccording to trend forecasting giant, World Global style Network (WGSN), this pastel shade of green, coined ‘neo mint’, will dominate the worlds of fashion and interiors in 2020. Described by the institution as a gender-neutral colour with “an oxygenating, fresh tone that aligns science and technology with nature”, we think it’s just plain cool. If it has a somewhat familiar feel to it, you would be correct;

2010, 2003 and 2005 all featured their own iterations of this happy hue, with Turquoise, Aqua Sky and Blue Turquoise respectively topping Pantone’s colour of the year. Today we’re moving away from the duskier and more weathered shades, with mint offering a very fresh, light feel that is more than welcome in our abodes. We’ve tuned in our trend radars and looked out how to newly mint your home.

The gold treatment: Mint green makes the perfect partnership with gold accents, with their yellow tones bringing some warmth to this cool shade.

3

The bold and the beautiful: Why not go all out with a feature wall or a mint coloured fridge? After all, go big or go home, right?

4

Start small: Maybe you aren’t ready to hope off the neutral bus quite yet? That’s ok, in fact, small splashes of mint accessories can keep you in the trend party.

5

Opposites attract: Although being directionally opposite red on the colour wheel makes this fiery hue mint’s perfect partner, by virtue of being a secondary colour, it can comfortably co-exist with orange and purple. Just aim for colours of the same intensity and you’re on a roll.

6

Make a statement: The perfect antidote to dark and lifeless spaces, why not spring for some colourful mint cabinetry, which will make the perfect partnership with white appliances.

Totally Fabulous Existence All that you ever really need and want for your kitchen and cooking is likely to be at Total Food Equipment (TFE).

I

t’s a mouthwatering destination. Sandra McLay of the Moorhouse Avenue store says the shop has long had a reputation for very high quality cookware and tableware, decorative items included. Because of this, it’s the store to frequent for those serious about cooking and meal quality. Using the right tools; cast iron, enamelware, or clayware makes meals deliciously successful. Many home cooks may not realise the tender effects that flow from long slow cooking in a perfectly evenly heated vessel, for instance. Or the fact that top-quality knives make their users less prone to injuries, rather than the reverse. The team at TFE is trained in all of the technical aspects of their globallysourced cookware, coffee-makers and appliances. They might even tell customers the temperature at which to cook certain dishes on their barbeques. Some of the pots and pans here are relative rarities, such as steamers with several tiers like multi-storey buildings. Sandra says she personally doesn’t boil anything except potatoes; she prefers to

steam her vegetables, thereby retaining texture and nutrition. So the denser vegetables go into the lowest steamer, and the more watery, thinner veges into the top tier. Cooking like this is also elegantly simple… it’s literally a vertical stack, freeing up kitchen and element space. All of those items which make meal preparation simple and ergonomic are bound to be somewhere in the Moorhouse TFE. Sandra says she supports local suppliers wherever possible. She points to a range of bread-or-cheeseboard-looking ‘lynchboards.’ These are beautifully finished, silken-looking chopping or presentation-boards made here in Canterbury. They’re produced from recycled native beech and rimu, in thicknesses you’d struggle to find anywhere – even in currently produced high-end furniture. For those people keener on collating food, or in producing maximum-impact, minimum-effort meals, a visit to TFE will truly pay dividends. Not only is there gorgeous serve-ware and indie platters,

there’s also the sauces, preserves, and grinds. In other words, here are the finishing touches in which the interesting and the tangy collide. These are the perfect items to ‘salt away’ for presents, no pun intended. This is the place to find marmalade containing whisky, jam made with riesling and lemon thyme, or salt for fajitas with the perfect ‘kick’ to make a meal memorable. Later on in the calendar, when it’s becoming ok to talk about impending Christmas, this is the shop to put all gift dilemmas to bed. There’s gold-coloured cutlery, silicone casserole carriers; children’s bake-ware and cookie-cutter sets, not to mention candlesticks, cake stands, serviettes; even old-school pottery biscuit-jars. People who preserve lemons or any other fruit will find super-cool glass jars with different seal options here. Maybe TFE staff will even share their best-ever recipe into the bargain. TFE is at 218 Moorhouse Ave and has ample customer parking. Visit www.tfe.co.nz, or phone 03 366 6912. Metropol November 08, 2018 87

Looking up By Melinda Collins

The four walls of our home have long provided a place of residence for artwork and accents, a fact that sees them dressed to impress.

N

ow it seems things are looking up, both figuratively and literally, with the concept of the ‘fifth wall’ now hitting consumer consciousness. This isn’t intended as some obscure play on words. The ‘fifth wall’ is in fact, your ceiling and it’s a space which is increasingly being utilised to get our creative juices flowing. So why not aim high and get clever – either through paint, wallpaper or even a mural? A little bit bold and a little bit in your face, decorating this space isn’t for the faint of heart, but if you are craving the ‘wow’ factor in your home, thenApothecary this mightcollection just be the Scullys Modern in ticket. Smart Spaces Thinking of investing in a smart home? Chances are you’re not looking to your plumbing. However, technology is playing an increasingly important role in this space, whether your end game is improving comfort and value, creating a healthier home or lowering your environmental impact.

Comfort and value Stream live music to your shower, or control lighting and water pressure through a digital interface. There are LEDs that light up the toilet bowl for night use, or even LED light rings in bathroom sinks that glow red or blue to indicate water temperature. Healthy homes ‘Touchless technology’ can help avoid the spread of germs. Close the lid, flush the toilet and even wash your hands without having to touch germ-infested surfaces. Better yet, the toilet lid will automatically close, finally putting an end to the ongoing ‘seat up or down’ debate! Clever water filtration systems such as reverse osmosis filtration can even filter out contaminants from tap water.

63 Rutland St, St Albans (opposite Rugby Park) Ph 355 3336

Environmental impact New smart dishwashers can recycle water from the rinse cycle for the next wash. Lowflow shower heads and faucet aerators can reduce your home water consumption as much as 50 percent, reducing water heating costs. Dual-flush toilets featuring two levers – one for urine and one for solid waste – and home automation technology that can shut off sprinkler systems based on weather reports are both popular water saving options. Tankless water heaters provide hot water only as needed, using about 20 percent less energy than traditional storage methods. And, of course, the classic greywater system – re-using water that goes down the sink or shower drain for other purposes such as flushing the toilet – is another great innovation.

HOLD

F

or 2018, VW has breathed new life into the Amarok with an updated V6 Highline and flagship Aventura. Miles Continental allowed me to compare both these models back to back to see how they stack up. The 2018 Amarok V6 range starts at $69,990 for the base model, the Highline at $78,990 and the new Aventura at $89,990. Getting up there yes, but there is certainly a lot of truck for your buck, especially when up to 3.5 tonnes of whatever can be towed to your heart’s content. Under the bonnet lies the 3.0-litre TDi V6 juggernaut. Both Standard and Highline Amaroks make do with a hefty 165kW/550Nm, while the Aventura gets 190kW/580Nm, with 200kW available on over-boost. The Aventura will also reach the national limit in a mere 7.3 seconds too, making it the fastest and most powerful ute on sale in New Zealand. VW also claims 9.0L/100km (Highline) and 8.6L/100km (Aventura) respectively. Features like dual zone climate control, auto driving lights and reversing camera come as standard on the entry model, while the Highline benefits from LED daytime running lights, parking sensors front and rear, sat nav, chrome highlights and leather trim. The Aventura gets even more with shift

paddles, chrome side steps, 20-inch alloys, stop/start technology, sports bar and the option of the striking Ravenna Blue colour scheme as featured on my test car. The Amarok also is able to lug around more then a tonne of stuff courtesy of that sizeable rear deck. Starting up with the conventional key (no keyless entry here), the V6 purrs very un-diesel like into life. Getting up to speed, the immense get-up-and-go of the V6 becomes all too real. Between 3500 and 4000 rpm, the extra 10kW overboost kicks in, making overtaking a breeze. The eight-speed automatic box is simple and straight forward, offering slick changes from gear to gear. In the bends, the combination of VW’s 4MOTION four-wheeldrive system and ‘Servotronic’ steering, means the Aventura corners more car-like than you would initially expect. The only trade off is a slightly firmer ride. Off the beaten track in off-road mode, the Amarok is also very capable. Climbing every mountain and fording every stream will soon become your forte. In summary, for those wanting to make a statement, the new Aventura is the only way to go. However, I’d be more than happy with the V6 Highline. Either way, you still end up with one of the most rugged, yet refined utes on our roads today.

OLDIE BUT A GOO AN

When Toyota invites you to the national launch of a new Corolla, it’s not an offer to refuse. So, I found myself flying to Toyota New Zealand’s HQ in Palmerston North to be among the first to get acquainted with the newest edition of New Zealand’s favourite car.

ONE IS SOLD SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD EVERY 15 SECONDS

M

ore than 44 million Corollas have been built over 50 plus years and these days, one is sold somewhere in the world every 15 seconds. In our neck of the woods, 25.6 percent of our national car fleet are Toyotas and close to 155,000 of those are Corollas. On the first day of the national launch, we were given a tour of Toyota New Zealand’s parts warehouse. It is mindboggling to see all the Toyota parts and accessories packaged and ready for delivery to dealerships throughout the country. We also got to see the 2018 Corolla up close for the first time. There are three spec levels on offer for the new Corolla; the entry point GX, mid-range SX and top end ZR, with the choice of petrol (GX, SX, ZR) or hybrid powertrains (GX, ZR). The range starts at $29,990 for the GX Petrol and tops out at $38,490 for the ZR Hybrid. Styling wise, the new car has a lower and wider stance than before. Chiseled edges, a more rounded rear and steeply raked screen gives a more muscular presence, which in this writer’s opinion is a good thing. The GX and SX get 16-inch alloys, while the sportier looking ZR gets some very pretty 18s. Inside, the Corolla exudes a new level of upmarket feel. A simplistic design contrasts to a clear and concise

infotainment system and buttock-hugging chairs, which on the ZR are leather and suede, are certainly very comfortable. Head and leg-room are good too. Safety kit, including Lane Departure warning, Dynamic Radar Guided Cruise Control and Road Sign Assist, also adorn the new car. The next day of the launch event, it was drive time. I started out in the range-topping ZR Hybrid. The 1.8 litre hybrid system, shared with the new Prius, (90kW) is the most economical in its class at 4.2l/100km while emitting 97g/km of C02. The steering is a tad vague however, thanks to Toyota’s new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, the lower centre of gravity makes for a more planted feeling in the bends. The eightspeed Direct Shift CVT changes well and the ride is supple and refined. Swapping over to the SX Petrol, I found the new 2.0-litre Direct Force fourcylinder engine to be quite perky and eager to go, making driving round the Wairarapa a real giggle. Power has gone up 21 percent to 125kW and torque up 15 percent to 200Nm. As far as first drive impressions go, the 2018 Corolla did not disappoint. Can’t wait to give both petrol and hybrid versions an in-depth evaluation on Canterbury roads real soon.
