Share the love St Valentine’s Day is only a few days away, and for some it is a special time to show how much they care. Caring should not just be something reserved for special days, as recent events have taught us. And caring is not

just about buying expensive gifts, although that is definitely a gesture that we ladies love. Caring may be as simple as shouting over the fence to check that a neighbour is okay or picking up litter from the pavement. It’s about being kind too, especially now that we’re once again being tested by Covid-19 and its offshoots. Don’t forget to care for yourself either. These are stressful times and looking after yourself is as important as caring for one another. Check out some ‘burnout buster’ suggestions later in

Sometimes it is hard to find that elusive bright spot, and that’s when a chat with someone else might help to sort it. Yes, another old adage is ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’, and that too often proves to be the case. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, or to show that you care. he smell and that first sip of coffee in the morning, birdsong filtering through the traffic, the velvety petals of a rose; all invoke the use of our five main senses for brief moments here and there. Dr Jo Burzynska takes using senses to a whole new level, and wants others to do the same. She’s currently creating an unusual exhibition ‘What might we find when we stop looking?’, to be held at 8 3 February, 2022 Metropol

Christchurch Arts Centre in May, exploring using more of the nonvisual senses. Recently returned home to Christchurch with a PhD in multisensory art from UNSW Art & Design in Sydney, Jo is no stranger to exploring sensory perception. She’s previously made numerous public sound works, and was one of the founders of The Auricle Sonic Arts Gallery and the Audacious Festival of Sonic Art.

A New Zealand-based wine journalist, author, judge, multisensory artist and researcher, Jo is well-known in the wine world, and has many other strings to her bow, including professionally trained musician and sound artist. As part of an interdisciplinary PhD, she explored the influence of sound/music on the perception of wine aroma and flavour across the fields of art, sensory

science and psychology. She now applies this knowledge in wine and music matching events, in international multisensory artworks presentations, and helping drinks companies integrate their product flavours with sound and other sensory and aesthetic elements. Jo explains. “Sensory perception is how we make sense of the information we encounter in our environments through our senses. These senses were traditionally considered to be sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch, but are now widely agreed to include balance, and body awareness. We may in fact have as many as 32 senses. “While our senses were once considered as working quite separately, advances in technology that lets us look inside the brain, has revealed that they’re actually highly connected. Our perception is inherently multisensory, and what we experience through different sensory channels at the same time influences each other. “These sensory interactions (known as crossmodal perception), is what much of my research and recent creative projects have engaged with, specialising in those between

hearing, and smell and taste. An example she gives is sitting in her garden, hearing a bird chirping, the rustling of leaves, feeling a cool breeze against her skin, smelling cut grass and bark chips, and tasting the sweet-sour character of the lemonade she is sipping. “Focusing on just my own specialisations, the high pitched chirping and cool breeze will be directing my attention to, and possibly intensifying, my experience of the grassy “top note” aroma of my lawn, and the lemony sourness of my drink.” She kept her wine and music careers separate for a decade, until a hunch told her that music was affecting her perception of wine. “I assumed this was just a product of my own high level engagement with both. Then I read a study by a UK psychologist that demonstrated that people’s perceptions of the taste of a wine could be altered by the music they heard when tasting it. When I realised these interactions might be universal, I started to explore this in my own work.”

o’s exhibition is on at the Christchurch Arts Centre, 18 29 May. Prior to that she plans to launch her perfume, Eau Tautahi, inspired by the aromas of the city, an edition of which will include soundscapes from the exhibition. Creating the exhibition, Jo wanted to avert the gaze from the visual perception that dominates much Western culture. “As vision regularly distracts us from information delivered through other sensory channels, I wanted to discover what different understandings there might be when we rely on our other senses in encounters with our urban environment. “For example, I led a multisensory walk that encouraged participants to dial down the visual. It is amazing the things you notice just walking down a street. It’s like opening a portal into another a world full of unseen stimulation.” She says the walks and the resultant exhibition encourage exploring under-appreciated senses, such as touch. “We use it without thinking in our daily life, to discover information from the texture and temperature of our environments, to making emotional connection with others. However, there’s so much more we can do with it. Consequently, unlike most exhibitions, visitors will be encouraged to touch (and listen, and smell and taste) the art. Metropol 3 February, 2022 9

The music of Carole King Christchurch songbird Ali Harper returns home later this year to present a nostalgic musical ride, honouring Carole King.

he more I absorb and dive into the music of Carole King, the more I know you are going to just love the show. We honour her songs, her collaborators, the artists who made her music ‘hits’ but also the woman herself,” she explains. The show, A Natural Woman, will be hosted by Ali and also feature her band, Nick Granville (guitar), Francis Meria (piano), Scott Maynard (bass) and guest vocalist Frankie Leota (pictured). In 1971, the landmark album Tapestry revealed Carole King to be arguably the greatest singer-songwriter of all time. For so many, her songs have been described as a soundtrack to their lives, says Ali. “Fifty years on, it’s timely that we come together and be wowed by the intensity and vigour of Carole King; songs such as I Feel The Earth Move, It’s Too Late, So Far Away, Natural Woman, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Smackwater Jack, and You’ve Got A Friend.” When – 20 to 22 May Where – The Piano, Christchurch

Retirement facilities are presented with many challenges during Covid-19 lockdowns. New care protocols have to be put in place to get residents through in the best physical and mental health.

etropol asked how Elmswood Retirement Village navigated the August 2021 lockdown. The Activities team was singled out as the superstars, organising moraleboosting outdoor, socially-distanced group chats, exercise classes and sing-alongs. Resident Betty Farrant missed her granddaughter’s wedding, but she says she did not feel isolated. “The activities team was marvelous and I appreciated the ice-creams, shortbread, and care packs that were dropped off.” Zoom and Messenger really came into their own for family connection; the residents watched the daily government updates; shared stories of epidemics that they had lived through, and discussed what they felt we could learn from this pandemic. Vaccine Packs were put together for outings; containing the resident’s vaccine pass, a fresh mask and a Covid-19 information booklet. One staff member says that it was a hard time for everyone, but they feel good about what they did, and how they were still able to have fun and laughs. Making a perfect pivot In today’s uncertain market, the best way to stay relevant is to grow with the changes and get on with it. Metropol writer Kia Dirkson has some suggestions about how to change to get ahead.

I

t is called a pivot and it means fundamentally changing the direction of a business when you realise the current products or services aren’t meeting the needs of the

market. The main goal of this move is to survive in the market and improve revenue. Here are some tips on how to go with the flow and amplify success in an ever-changing world.

Set new goals

This is the time to learn from the past and plan for your future. Decide on new revenue goals and customer traction numbers. You need to design new goals that align with your newly pivoted business.

Make a call

This is an old practice but still considered the best way to regain traction during a lull. Reaching out to past clients is re-establishing that connection and rebuilding the trust that created the successful relationship in the past. By calling new contacts, you exhibit that bold business force that is necessary

Speak your audience’s language

Proper messaging is extremely important because the best ideas are forgotten if they are not memorable for you audience. Do you have social media? Using multiple means to spread the word about your business in real time is the way of the future. Use tutorials to get started or take a course to learn the basics of what needs to be done to perform on a digital platform.

escribed as driven, friendly, and inquisitive, Jaggy Singh is also highly organised, successful, and, yes… busy. Fluent in English, Hindi, and Punjabi, Jaggy relocated from his home in Haryana, India in 2014. Since then, Jaggy’s entrepreneurial nature has seen him establish and lead numerous businesses across Canterbury. Recognising his market knowledge and passion for people and

Jaggy’s top tips for purchasing property:

1.

Write your wish list, then prioritise the non-negotiables. Understanding where your priorities lie helps you avoid dismissing homes that could work for you. For example, location is often non-negotiable and if necessary, you may be willing to sacrifice a bedroom to purchase in your ideal suburb. Understanding this early in the process will save you considerable time.

2.

Gather your team of experts. In addition to a dedicated salesperson, Jaggy also recommends engaging a mortgage broker before making an offer. Obtaining finance has become more complex recently, so having a great team on your side is vital.

hildren don’t typically notice eye strain as much as adults do,” says Leza Fox of Anstice Optometrists in Upper Riccarton. “Staring at screens reduces the blink rate which in turn leads to dry, irritated, and tired eyes.” Anstice Optometrists specialise in children’s eyesight and recommend an annual optometric examination to keep track of developing eyesight issues. Leza also suggests setting an alarm on children’s PC/devices so they are reminded of the 20-20–20 rule. “Every 20 minutes look into the distance (20 feet) for 20 seconds. In addition, take planned movement breaks from all devices to feel refreshed and refocused.” To make an appointment call 03 343 3909.

arion personally selects the store’s classic and contemporary jewellery from all around the world, with a focus on high-quality and ethically sourced pieces. Her classic ‘Sterling Silver’ range is this season’s standout. It is handmade in Spain and Mexico, where artisans produce unique designs that are found nowhere else in the world. Especially popular are the hammered pieces that catch the light and make a style statement with each wearing. Globally, the chunky trend is in, along with layering longer pieces together and topping it off with oversized earrings, proving that bigger is now better. For many years, osteoarthritis was considered a result of excess wear of a joint and therefore the logical conclusion was that rest will help prevent further deterioration. “We now know this is not the best advice,” says Cath. “The research is clear that exercise should be the first line of treatment for anyone with arthritic symptoms.” Exercise guided by a Health Professional can lead to significant improvements in pain and mobility in as little as eight weeks.

Myth 2. Feeling pain means I am doing further damage to my joint. People are often told to avoid anything that causes pain because it may be doing further damage. “Pain is a complex sensation, especially in people with long term conditions such as arthritis,” says Cath. “People can exercise through tolerable levels of discomfort to strengthen the joint and surrounding muscles.” An experienced physiotherapist can guide you as to what this means for you.

Myth 3. My X-ray shows bone on bone so it is too late for exercise to help.

Exploring osteoarthritis myths Despite osteoarthritis being one of the most common lifestyle diseases, many myths as to the best treatment options still abound. We speak to Cath Julius, Physiotherapist and Registered GLA:D Osteoarthritis Program Provider to debunk some common myths.

People often believe X-rays are the definitive guide to how severe their arthritis is. However, there is very little correlation between X-ray results and a person’s function and pain levels. “I have seen people with severe arthritis on X-ray that function well in daily life. Likewise, I have seen people with only minor changes on X-ray with significant pain and disability,” says Cath. “The only thing we know for sure is that no matter how severe your symptoms, targeted exercise can significantly improve your symptoms and delay the need for surgery.” If you would like to know more about how exercise can help you, contact Freedom Health Physiotherapy & Pilates on 03 355 6699. www.freedomhealth.co.nz

Myth 1. My joint is “worn out” so I have to rest it.

Experience Flow Wellbeing In 2011 Flow Hot Yoga was formed with the intention to bring Christchurch people together through yoga. It was opened by leading yoga teacher Donna Farhi, aka the “teacher of teachers”.

E

leven years later this popular yoga studio outgrew its Mandeville Street site and in October last year, Donna Farhi returned to open the newly named centre on Fitzgerald Avenue. The following are Donna’s reflections on Flow Wellbeing. “We all intuitively know the power of “place” and how an aesthetically beautiful environment or thoughtfully designed room can uplift our spirits. Few of us, however, have the resources to have such a designated space in our home and rarely can we find the peace and quiet we may need to calm our mind and refresh our energies. “This is one of the reasons why the new Flow Wellbeing Centre is such an incredible community resource. Now anyone can potentiate their healing or simply shift a bad mood into a good one through being able to enter this gorgeous facility to attend a class, intensive or one of the many therapies offered there. “I have taught yoga intensives and retreats in just about every country of the world and this new centre sets a new 36 3 February, 2022 Metropol

standard for what a yoga and wellbeing centre can be. And it is right here in Christchurch. “Now more than ever we are coming to appreciate the mental and emotional benefits of being able to get out of the house and go somewhere that offers us a new perspective. “When I walk through the doors of Flow, I feel immediately welcomed by the warmth of the staff. I feel immediately calmed by the thoughtfulness, order, and pristine cleanliness of the place: from the racks for your shoes to the beautiful pottery basins in the bathrooms. “Entering any of the studios feels like moving into a sacred space: an ancient cave, a forest glen, or the ocean’s edge. The inspired interior by Sharon Cross brings these primal experiences into each room where the place can help to activate and support a movement back to centre. “We all need a place where we can go to rejuvenate ourselves. We are deeply blessed to share in the generosity of this space.” - Donna Farhi, yoga teacher and author.

Open Day Sunday 20 February from 8am to 6pm. FREE CLASSES (bookings required) and special memberships will be offered on the day. Wear your mask and bring your vaccine pass. Flow Wellbeing has something for ALL ages, 10-100. Hot classes Cool classes Big classes Small classes Specialty classes Personal Consultations and a wide range of therapists at Flow Therapeutics. Try saying no to things more often and create structure, such as not checking work emails or taking work phone calls after certain hours and on days off.

Look after yourself

Making time to do some of the things you enjoy such as socialising with friends, painting, gardening, taking a walk and doing sports.

Find balance

If you use a screen at work, then take a break from them after work, and during the weekend. Resting behaviours should differ from work so try something new and relaxing.

Take microbreaks

Microbreaks are tiny, impromptu breaks (five to 10 minutes) during the work day. Try walking round the block, getting a snack or looking out a window.

Try microchillers

Burnout busters Burnout is a word being used increasingly in relation to work, sport and even coping with home life. One way to prevent or deal with burnout is to set boundaries. Sometimes that may seem difficult, but persevere; it’s worth the effort. Here are some suggestions from the team at Metropol.

Microchillers are small doses of selfcare of five minutes or less throughout the day. Take a deep breath then check out the sights and sounds, scents and activity around you.

Seek help if needed

Daily, long-term stress management is a key part of fighting burnout, but sometimes counselling may be needed to develop a self-care plan to prevent burnout.

Change your outlook

Outlook is one thing you can adjust. Turn a stressor around by thinking how it can work to your advantage, and how you can find something positive in any negativity.

Ear care Ask anyone suffering from a hearing impairment how it affects their day-to-day life and invariably the answer will be difficulty understanding conversation in a group situation and feelings of isolation.

T

o be in a room packed with people but be cut off from the conversations going on around you can be frustrating and upsetting. Not hearing properly can make for a lonely life. Hearing loss develops slowly and it sometimes takes family members to point it out. Admitting to a hearing loss can be difficult and helping someone with a hearing loss can also be hard. Hear Again is one of the highest rated hearing clinics in Christchurch. It is a fully independent hearing provider that gives honest and unbiased advice. There can be many underlying reasons as to why an individual suffers hearing loss; one common cause is an excess of ear wax, resulting in blocked ears. With the aid of a micro-suction machine, clinicians can gently and painlessly vacuum away ear wax and debris. Another common ear problem is tinnitus, which is a sensation of sound which is not present in the external

environment. Tinnitus can be a ringing, buzzing, hissing, whistling, throbbing, booming, clicking, roaring or cicada-like noise. It can be a single sound or many different sounds and can develop gradually or suddenly. Approximately 20% of the population experience persistent tinnitus and 4% of the population have tinnitus that severely impacts quality of life. Often tinnitus exists as a symptom of hearing loss. Hear Again provide free hearing checks to find out if there are any hearing problems which could be causing this. The best solution for most hearing losses is to be fitted with appropriately prescribed hearing aids. The clinicians will chat through all of your options in this regard. With access to the highest quality hearing devices and accessories from the world’s leading manufacturers, clients are assured that all of their hearing wants and needs are catered for.

The team at Hear Again pride themselves on taking the time to get to know their clients. They provide free, no obligation demonstrations of hearing aids to show the benefits of wearing hearing aids and how life and lifestyles can be greatly improved. Hearing aids start from as little as $495 (assuming a government subsidy can be claimed for a hearing aid on behalf of the client). Depending on your work history, you may be eligible for other funding, which can even provide hearing aids at no cost to you. Open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, Hear Again is located at Hornby Mall (between Japan Mart and BNZ). Call 03 974 1658, or book an appointment online. For information, email info@hearagain.co.nz. Dancing to the beat If you like exercising to music – and most of us do – then here are a few suggestions about what to listen to.

B

ritish sportswear and lingerie retailer Pour Moi recently analysed the data of 60 runs completed by a group of runners (where the runners listened to a different artist for each session), revealing which recording artists improved the runners’ times the most. The results: Listening to Beyoncé made them run the fastest (shaving 2 minutes 45 seconds off a 5km run), with Harry Styles, Britney Spears, Adele and Taylor Swift also found to have a considerable impact. Listening to Drake, BTS, Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry had the opposite effect to Beyoncé, slowing the run times by up to six percent. The 10 top artists that made the sample group run faster, in order from top to bottom, were Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Britney Spears, Adele, Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, Rihanna, Ed Sheeran, Olivia Rodrigo and Justin Bieber. The results showed that a running workout

Listening to Beyoncé made them run the fastest (shaving 2 minutes 45 seconds off a 5km run)...

could be more than half a minute quicker per kilometre when listening to Queen B, meaning you could run a 5km route two minutes and 45 seconds faster than usual,. Listening to ex-One Direction member Harry Styles was found to improve running time by almost nine percent, taking over two-and-ahalf minutes off the average 5km run. Britney Spears (aka the Princess of Pop) is in third place thanks to her iconic tunes like ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ reducing running time by almost eight percent, taking 28 seconds off the runner’s average time – which means running 5km two minutes and 20 seconds faster. Listening to superstar Adele could take 13 minutes and 18 seconds off a marathon. Plugging in to Taylor Swift, whose country music can make you run 16 seconds faster, equates to saving one minute 22 seconds on a 5km jog. Check it out for yourself at www.pourmoi.co.uk

cuisine Delicious tahini Courtesy of Two Raw Sisters

I

f you’re not familiar with tahini, it’s just ground-up sesame seeds (so it’s high in calcium). When you’re buying tahini there are two types, unhulled and hulled. Unhulled is when the outer layer of the sesame seed hasn’t been removed, resulting in a thick, bitter paste. Hulled is when the outer layer has been removed so the tahini is more pourable and much less bitter. Long story short: when buying tahini, always get hulled.”

Method for all dressings

Extracted from the Two Raw Sisters latest cookbook Salad.

Place all the ingredients in a small bowl. Mix until everything is well combined and has a smooth, creamy consistency. If your dressing is too thick, add more water. If it’s too runny, add more tahini. Store in an airtight container or jar in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Miso Tahini Makes approx. 1 cup 3 Tbsp tahini 1 tsp apple cider vinegar 2 tsp miso paste water, to loosen Sesame Tahini Makes approx. 1 cup 2 Tbsp tahini ¼ cup water 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 tsp sesame oil pinch of sea salt Lemon Tahini Makes approx. 1 cup ¼ cup tahini 2 cloves garlic, crushed and finely chopped zest and juice of 1 lemon pinch of sea salt water, to loosen Cheesy Tahini Makes approx. 1 cup 2 Tbsp tahini 1½ Tbsp nutritional yeast juice of 1 lemon pinch of sea salt 1–2 Tbsp water

One grandmother was called Daisy and the other loved them.” It was in 2018 that Maree hit the road with her food caravan (Flips Pancakes), visiting fetes, A&P shows, galas and private events. The camaraderie, support and advice from fellow mobile food operators was invaluable and taught Maree much about

working within the food industry. With the last of her children recently vacating the nest, Maree was eager to make her next move into something she’d had in mind for some time – catering. “Flips Catering was born from the fact that Selwyn district needs something like this, and that I’m a firm believer in giving back to the community. I want people to have access to really good food!” With Maree’s kitchen at home now

She is excited to be also offering meal care packs – a practical alternative to sending flowers when acknowledging a birth, recovering from illness, a bereavement or helping out an elderly person. “My point of difference is that I will provide the food clients want – if it’s scones like their Granny made, or a favourite family recipe – share that with me and together we’ll make it happen.” Maree says that the four key components to her catering business are that her food is delicious, provides the wow factor, evokes memories and creates happiness. “If I get those things right, then I think I will have contributed in some small way to giving back.” Contact Flips Catering at: www.flipscatering.co.nz or call them on 027 327 7289.

French ambience in Merivale W

hether you are popping in for a daily takeaway coffee and croissant or a long lunch with the ladies, prepare yourself for an escape to France. Located in the historic Charlotte Jane Hotel, a stunningly renovated French villa, Maison De Crepe is the French infusion that Merivale needs. With a room for entertaining, a room to escape and another room to soak up the sun in the spacious atrium, you will find good reason to relax

and stay for a while. The food is reason enough. Their fresh approach to European dining combines local ingredients to create French staple cooking suitable for the Kiwi palate, that includes both sweet and savoury dishes. If it is a drink you desire, there is a full range of wine, champagne, beer and a Bottomless Brunch. The French Espresso Martini is fit for summer and features the house-made French caramel. With the first permanent flower wall installation in Christchurch, MDC is amassing a large following as it’s the perfect spot for getting that well-lit selfie. The restaurant has also seen an increase in private dining room bookings. The French inspired décor is ideal for

receptions, corporate events, tastings, anniversaries and baby showers. With the upcoming polo and wedding season around the corner, this will definitely be a prominent spot for celebrations. Owner Sheena Hemens has a strong marketing and consulting background that is ushering in the expansion of MDC. Hemens says, “Growth is part of the plan for 2022 and there is a lot on the horizon for Maison de Crepe. We have many exciting changes coming up and I can’t wait to share this with our clients and customers.” You’ll find them at 106 Papanui Road, Merivale. Start with the venue

P

lanning a wedding can sometimes feel a daunting task, but if the venue is right, everything else soon falls into place. The venue is a great place to start. Situated on the banks of the Avon River is the resplendent Mona Vale. This historic and iconic homestead was built 1899 – 1900 and is nestled amidst 5.5 hectares of

immaculate gardens. Its magnificent setting of rolling lawns, established trees, the 100-year-old Fernery, plus rose garden and stunning flowerbeds, provides myriad photographic opportunities. With many venues limited in seating capacity, the Homestead seats 110, making those bigger sized weddings entirely doable; a marquee on the Iris lawn is an especially popular option. “‘Mona Vale offers a unique service of compiling all your wedding details by

working with you; this ensures that nothing is missed out,” Mona Vale Manager Kate McLachlan says. As far as wedding trends for 2022, the bewitching beauty of Mona Vale cannot be ignored. Its indoor and outdoor options make it the ultimate venue to relax and cherish every magical moment. During these uncertain times, what more could a couple ask for? A taste of Morocco N

othing tantalises the taste buds quite like Middle Eastern food, and if there’s one country from this region that encapsulates best the glory of this cuisine, it has to be Morocco. Morocco is the land of spices and openair markets. Moroccan cuisine can be traced back to Berber, Maghreb, Jewish,

and Arab cultures. Fortunately, we don’t have to travel that far to sample this delicious fare, for here in Christchurch, Mosaic by Simo provides authentic Moroccan cuisine - and the word has spread. Foodies are flocking to experience its unrivalled tapas, mezze, briouats, tagines and other mouth-watering Moroccan dishes. Reading ready For the past two years, shapes, motifs, colours and finishes reminiscent of the Art Deco era have been all the rage. While it’s a trend that shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, the truth of the matter is that it is still a trend – one that will eventually fade in popularity.

T

his pared down space features a strong base with Resene Half Alabaster walls and Resene Rakaia floors, which are ripe for layering in character, creativity and colour, while the Pause Voile curtains in Blonde from the Resene Curtain Collection bring a touch of softness and warmth. The furniture includes a simple, classic armchair, a creamcoloured rug and an interesting yet neutral angular timber floor lamp. From here, it’s easy to layer on any trend you desire through cushions, decorative accessories and, of course, accent paint colours. The first Art Deco-inspired DIY project, an arched corner divider, helps to physically set this cosy reading corner apart from the

greater living area and minimise visual distractions. You can build this using two sheets of 1200mm x 600mm pre-cut MDF. Trace an identical curve onto each and cut with a jig saw. Screwed the edges of the two panels together so that they stand at a right angle, fill the holes with wood filler, then sand them down and remove any roughness from the cut edges. Wipe all surfaces with a clean, dry rag to remove any dust then coat with Resene Quick Dry primer using a small smooth surface foam roller. Once dry, paint the entire screen in two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Half Alabaster so that it blends in with the walls. Measure and mask sixteen vertical stripes so that eight are centred on each screen. To add an extra bit of flair, don’t carry the stripes all the way to the top or bottom of the screen. Trace a large platter lightly on the bottom left and top right

sections with a pencil, mask along where the curve and stripes meet, then paint the stripes in Resene Pattens Blue. Create the second side table project using a 50cm diameter pre-cut MDF circle and six 32mm x 1.8m wood dowels cut into thirds (60cm long). Use a wide cardboard mailing tube to create the base, using strong quick dry adhesive to affix the doweling to one another around the tube and then to the base of the circle. Wipe all surfaces with a clean, dry rag to remove any dust then coat with Resene Quick Dry primer. Apply two topcoats of Resene Lustacryl, allowing the first to dry before adding a second.

The sound of silence True noise cancellation can weirdly center you in the moment, and remove you from it simultaneously. Metropol’s gadget guru Ian Knott experiences Sony’s latest headphones.

T

here are many models of headphones on the market that have ‘noise reduction’, which relies mainly on the seal of the padding around the ears, some more successful than others. However actual ‘noise-cancelling’ headphones are a different beast altogether. My time with Sony’s stylish new WH-XB900N Wireless Noise Cancelling headphones was my first experience with true, digital noise cancellation. It takes a little getting used to. The feeling is slightly disconcerting at first, as sensory deprivation (of one of the senses) kicks in. I can see people’s lips moving around me, I can see my fingers tapping the keys on my keyboard, but there’s no sound. Nothing at all. It’s both weird and awesome at the same time. It works by collecting the ambient sounds, analysing their waveform and firing an inverted wave-form back at them, effectively cancelling them out. That leaves an environment where music is the focus, and as part of Sony’s EXTRA BASS® range, these headphones do not disappoint.

WH-XB900N headphones

A dedicated bass duct on the headphone housing and increased air-tightness between the driver units and eardrums help to create precise, punchy rhythms that lift every track. Yet the headphones also maintain vocal clarity for a wonderfully rich, well-rounded listening experience. My favourite feature is the touch panel on the right headphone housing. You wouldn’t know it’s there, but on it, you can perform actions like pausing, volume control, or skipping tracks with the tap or swipe of your finger. Placing your hand on the housing immediately turns the volume down and turns off noise cancellation for instant conversation. They also boast a huge battery life - 30 hours from just a four-hour charge. The headphones are foldable and come with a stylish shell-case to keep them safe when not in use. Considering the sound, features, and build quality, the RRP of $449.95 doesn’t seem too much of a stretch if listening to your playlists gets you through the day with a smile.

Bringing the outside in A more natural look has become increasingly popular in interior design and doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon.

Linen

Linen is a plant-based fibre, that comes from the flax plant and softens over time. The fabric is breathable, lightweight, absorbent, and durable.

Hemp

Similar to canvas in texture, hemp is a highly sustainable plant-based fibre. The fabric is strong and has great water resistance.

Wool

An animal-based fibre commonly from sheep but also other animals such as alpacas. Wool is durable and waterresistant due to the oil from the animal’s skin.

Cotton

R

attan and bamboo furniture, stone and timber surfaces and accents, and materials sourced from nature are available across the range of high end and more affordable interior design stores. To introduce more natural materials into your home, opt for natural fibres when sourcing your

next couch upgrade or cosy rug. Natural fibres are animal or plant-based and include cotton, linen, wool, leather, silk and hemp. Generally, natural fibres are more sustainable than artificial fibres, as well as more durable. Here is a breakdown of a few favourites.

The most used fabric in commercial design, cotton can be made into an array of products from couches to carpet. Cotton is strong, flexible, and soft.

Aqualine’s UPONOR underfloor hydronic heating solution will keep your home warm and comfortable year-round. Underfloor hydronic heating is a slowrelease radiant floor heat bank, providing uniform temperature throughout your home. These radiant heat systems are aligned with the ‘optimum heat curve’ as defined by the heating industry, making it the most economically efficient means of heating living spaces and bathrooms.

Continuous comfort at minimum cost and maximum efficiency

Glamorous heating Awareness of energy efficiency and healthy living environments is growing, with these two factors being considered a priority for many new home builders and those renovating.

C

reating an even climate using good temperature control is an integral part of achieving a healthier and more comfortable home, which is even more important if you have young children or elderly people living there. The effects of dampness and mold are well-documented in New Zealand, and are common causes of respiratory illnesses.

Underfloor heating has been a common heating solution for decades in many other countries and is becoming more popular in New Zealand, and with good reason. Locally, leading the charge for underfloor heating and all the benefits that go with it, using technology designed for living in the 21st century, is Aqualine Products.

The hydronic central heating system is clean, safe and zero-allergen, operating at low water temperatures - keeping power bills to a minimum. Using the thermal mass of the concrete floor slab, the heat transfer delivers optimum comfort at much lower temperatures, reducing over-heating. Incorporating hydronics, underfloor heating with a highefficiency condensing boiler reduces running costs with up to 20 percent savings on gas bills.

Installation for new builds and renovations If you are renovating a home with floor tiles, floorboards or carpet, there will be at least one method suitable for installing underfloor heating. For new builds, there is the option of laying the system down and pouring the concrete slab to secure it in position. For the perfect climate you can feel but not see, an underfloor trench heating system is the discreet and effective way to heat your home. The Jaga Mini Canal Eco Trench convectors are easy to install and virtually invisible after installation. They will fit into your architectural plans with no need for compromise and are perfect for homes with floor to ceiling windows, large sliding doors or limited wall space. Let Aqualine Products introduce you to the clean, silent world of hydronic heating. Bridging a gap in the community

Next month sees the opening of South Brighton’s vibrant new community centre, The Bridge Hub.

S

everal years of planning and fundraising, and hundreds of hours of voluntary work have gone into transforming what was once a former church, on Bridge Street, South Brighton, into a multi-use community centre. The driving force behind the hub, The Bridge South Brighton Trust (TBSBT) is a charitable trust formed by local volunteers to convert what was originally an ‘as-is where-is’ earthquake-damaged former church. Trust Chair Lisa Tregenza says the new community centre is a stunning state-of-the-art building, which has been made possible through the hard work of a passionate and committed board of trustees,

with the wonderful support of the locals. “Tenacity and resilience are attributes that we see in this area, and this drive has carried the project from a vision to a reality. We are thrilled to see this building come to life as a central point for the community to gather, connect, share, learn, grow and feel welcome. We are excited to now bring the most important element to this project and that is you, the community.” She adds that being able to offer affordable and accessible activities and workshops, for all ages and stages, is a big part of the trust’s vision. “There will be a focus on tools to support mental and physical health and we see this as essential for a healthy

The Bridge Hub’s mission is to be a vibrant hub bringing together community spirit and wellbeing by providing space for activities, kai, conversation, learning and healing. It contains four distinct places to support its mission: • • • •

Community Hall – Te Kotahitanga Wellness Centre – Te Oranga Gallery – Te Awhina. Cafe, courtyard & co-working space – Umu

Community Hall

From concerts and performances to yoga and art classes or a theatre performance, this will be the place for it. With a room capacity of up to 160 people, and amazing acoustics, the vision for the hall includes hosting community theatre, concerts, movie nights, and activity classes. Also on the list are after-school activities, music lessons, concerts and even Sunday afternoon music sessions.

Cafe and courtyard

One of the main attractions of the new hub is its people-friendly café and courtyard. Be in the sun (or shade) with a group of friends, neighbours and/or family, and enjoy a caffe latte, a chicken panini or a nice cool drink. With space and vibrant community. We welcome in partners and funders to support us with this offering”. Project Coordinator Stephen Langridge, says the South New Brighton community lost a lot of shops and a community meeting hall during the 2011 earthquake sequence. “This project is about replacing those amenities with Whare Wananga - a place for the community to gather.”

for 50 customers inside and more outside in the courtyard, it’s a great destination for weekend mingling. Of note is the beautiful cafe furniture, upcycled from the original church pews by the MenzShed. Looking ahead, plans are also to use the café & courtyard for night classes for healthy food preparation skills.

Exquisite award-winning home Big isn’t always better as one 2021 New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) award-winner proves.

T

hreepwood Passive House, at Lake Hayes, near Arrowtown, was a winner in the Housing Category of the December 2021 NZIA awards. Earlier last year (in May) it won the Small Project Architecture Category in the 2021 Southern Architecture Awards. Designed by Team Green Architects, it has been described as “an exquisite small home that demonstrates that a commitment to the design metrics of a passive house need not come at the expense of a delightful living environment.” Its single, split-level form under a sloping roof fits readily into the site, providing an efficient plan of living. Sleeping spaces are at ground level, with a self-contained space above for alternative uses, such as a guest suite or office. Careful attention to detail throughout has produced an exemplary and highly efficient house to enjoy into the future. NZIA judges said: “Threepwood Passive House is a small, wellproportioned and robust family home that rests lightly amid its beautiful South Island surroundings. Its bold and simple form mimics the slope of the land while, inside, two levels connected by a ladder and tiny

playroom create flexible spaces for work and living. Through clever and compact planning, the functionality of entry, kitchen and laundry are merged, and generous volumes make living areas feel spacious and light. Outside, a wide, north-facing verandah provides essential shading and beautifully framed views that hold meaning for the homeowners. A certified Passive House Plus with an 8 Homestar rating, this relaxed home full of warmth and delight is a strong example of how responsible and sustainable design can be used to create delightful living environments.” Built by DCD Limited, Threepwood House is home (and office) for Team Green architect Siân Taylor, her husband (and fellow architect) Mark Read and their daughter. The couple established Team Green in 2013, with the purpose of offering New Zealander’s a better solution when it comes to designing buildings. “Based in Queenstown, we’re lucky enough to be able to design buildings in some of the most beautiful locations you can imagine,” says Siân. “Our dedicated team is committed to creating, energy efficient and beautiful buildings.” www.teamgreenarchitects.co.nz

Create your outdoor sanctuary

C

Creating a personal resort at home is like a year-round holiday.

arl Gildea of Willow Landscapes says everyone can have that blissful unwinding feeling when coming home after a long day - no matter how challenging the outdoor space may be. “We’ve some great weather here, even in winter. All outdoor areas can be transformed,” says Carl. After working in landscape construction overseas, then the passionate plant expert for 15 years in Christchurch, and now with two busy teams, he offers the complete landscaping portfolio. He has also developed a series of questions to help match spaces with lifestyles. “We assess, for example, how big outdoor tables need to be, children’s playtime needs, shelter with pergolas, privacy screenings, or practical paving.” Low maintenance with irrigation may be on the wish list, or pottering among the flowers, plantings and raised beds for the green fingered. “While we can complete the entire project, once clients get their landscape plan, they own it. They may want to do some themselves, or even use their own contractors. “It’s all too easy to spot an unplanned backyard. We know where to plant and how big things will grow. We also leave a maintenance plan for each future stage as the plantings mature.” For a free quote, call Carl on 021 536 442. www.willowlandscapes.co.nz

WORDS BEN SELBY

When Honda pulls the covers off a new Civic, it is always a big deal. Honda’s 11th generation Civic has been on sale since December and it’s a ‘good un’. The new car has a lower stance than before and sports a more mature-looking front and rear. The 18-inch alloys also look the business.

I

nside there have been some major changes. There is a distinctly European feel to all the switchgear and details like the metal honeycomb mesh hiding the air vents and piano black accent make for some handsome surroundings. There is more kit too, features like wireless charging, a new 7-inch LCD screen with digital analogue style gauges, Honda’s next generation 9-inch Display Audio System with built in Sat-Nav and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and for the

first time in a Civic, a rather decent BOSE stereo system. Honda’s Sensing Suite safety system also makes a comeback, but this time, the lane departure assist works at any speed. Open the taps on that 1.5L turbo four pot and it responds well. The power band is kept linear and when you flick up to Sport mode, you can have some fun too. If this new Civic Sport is anything to go by, then the upcoming Type R should be a real hoot.

WORDS BEN SELBY

Ford is making no bones about incorporating plug in electric and hybrid drive an integral part of its future. Last year the blue oval announced plans to do away with solely petrol-powered cars altogether by the end of 2022, with the exception of Ford’s Performance range and Everest SUV.

T

he next car to accelerate this plan is the upcoming Escape Hybrid which will join the proven and popular Escape PHEV. “Now with a full hybrid coming to join the plug-in hybrid, Escape customers will have an excellent range to choose from that that they can match to their particular needs – offering smart capability alongside great fuel economy and low emissions,” said Simon Rutherford, Managing Director, Ford New Zealand. A Mild Hybrid version of the Puma will also join the Hybrid Escape in the line-up. There will also be a fully electric variant of Ford’s Transit van. All three are part of the seven new models Ford will offer with electric drive by 2024. Ford New Zealand has also partnered with leading electric vehicle charging producer Singer Electric to provide all dealers nationwide with forecourt and service area charging stations. Ford’s plan to be fully carbon neutral by 2050 is certainly well on the way to becoming a reality.

FACT FILE Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo Price: $214,900 + ORC Powerunit: 93.4kWh Battery Pack Power: 420kW 0 to 100: 3.8 seconds in Boost Mode Range: Up to 420km Boot Space: 446L Alloys: 18-inch Weight: 2,320kg

he Taycan Cross Turismo is almost identical to the regular Taycan. It packs the same 93.4 kWh battery back underneath, and is available as four models, the 4, 4S (my test car), Turbo and Turbo S. The interior is identical and gives you one of the most comfortable driving positions of any car. The difference is that wagon rear with 446L of boot space, 40L more than the standard car. Along with the same tech as the regular Taycan, the Cross Turismo comes with Gravel Mode which raises the car up by 30mm so those gravel roads are easily dealt with. The 4S also comes with adaptive air suspension and when hooked up to a fast charger, will give you 80 percent charge from empty in less than 30 minutes. It’s fast too. Zero to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds is quick in anyone’s book. Range mode is best suited to ensuring you get the absolute maximum of its 420km range. However, when you want to have some fun and don’t mind losing some range, change to Sport or Sport Plus. The latter of these even gives you a Blade Runner style hum as you give it stick. Despite being almost five metres long and weighing 25kg more, the Cross Turismo sits planted and composed in the corners. It doesn’t matter how much oomph you apply; every bend is devoured with pin-sharp precision. It’s not cheap and you do pay extra for a number of features, but the Cross Turismo has brought the best of the Taycan and made it work even better in the real world. It is well and truly a masterclass of a premium EV.

SEXY & SAFE

WORDS NICHOLAS HENARE

IN BRIEF

The first thing I needed to learn was that Miles Skoda has moved from Tuam Street to a flash new showroom at 335 Moorhouse Ave.

T

here Chris Willets introduced me to the Skoda Octavia Racing Sport. First impressions of a sleek, sexier Octavia were to prove right when I hit the street. Power and torque combine with refinement and style to produce probably my favourite Skoda yet which is big talk after the Superb was my favourite car of 2018. It’s billed as a family car, so I guess it’s for the family that wants safety and a performance car at the same time. The rear brake lights have a cool “Knight Rider” start-up feature, which shows my age. There’s a proximity key

Skoda Octavia RS 2021

which means the car is open when you get close. Eighteen-inch alloys look great and it’s a sporty line on the vehicle. Think VW Passat but sexier. In the winter months, who doesn’t like the umbrella tucked away in the door? I know this seems like such a simple feature, but I LOVE it. Performance on the road is spectacular. I really felt like it’s more of a performance sports car. The Octavia RS rates as my favourite wagon for 2021. With elegant lines, the colour of your choice and those fantastic alloys, it’s worth a look whether you have a family or not.

Any colour you want... as long as it's green RO Jones Panelbeaters only use water-based paint, imported from Germany, environmentally friendly carwash and polish throughout the shop.
