“For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

I

t’s long been said that laughter is the best medicine and, although the sentiment behind this age-old adage is by its very nature rather sweet, the science on laughter actually stacks up. Not only does laughter decrease stress hormones and increase both immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, improving your resistance to disease, it also triggers the release of our natural ‘feel-good’ chemicals – endorphins. These handy little hormones promote an overall sense of wellbeing and can even temporarily relieve pain. I’ve been reflecting a lot on happiness recently, not because those around me are bouncing off the walls with happiness, but because I have seen the people around me not give way to unhappiness. You see, happiness isn’t just about the external manifestation of what we consider as ‘happy’, it also enables us to get through some of the most trying situations without allowing them to ABC AUDITED break us. According to the Dalai Lama, relying on external forces to determine your mood is a sure-fire way to failure if it’s sustainable, long term happiness you’re after. And, since we can’t control the weather, others’ actions or toddlers (yes, I have two of them!), it might be time to take charge of what we canAUDITED control – how we react to all of the above. After all, as Gabriel García Márquez once said, “No medicine cures what happiness cannot” and I can’t think of a life philosophy I’d rather live by.

NADIA By Melinda Collins

She is proudly an omnivore but Nadia Lim isn’t afraid to make veges the star of the show. We catch up with the culinary mastermind about how good old veges have given her a hit of inspiration in the kitchen.

You’ve just launched My Plant-based Bag, a limited-edition meal delivery kit packed with the best of New Zealand produce and plantbased proteins. What encouraged you to start a plant-based food bag and how has it been received? It’s been amazingly received, and we’ve all been blown away by how popular it’s been so far. It’s totally a reflection of what more and more people want these days. People used to think vegan food was rabbit food, but now so many omnivores are impressed (and often surprised) by just how delicious vegan/vegetarian food can be. Your latest cookbook Vegful has also just hit the shelves. How difficult is it creating recipes where veges play the starring role? Not difficult at all! I absolutely loved writing my latest book, Vegful! Whenever I pick a beautiful glossy, plump, vibrant purple eggplant or a hoard of cheerful cherry tomatoes from the garden, I can’t help but be inspired. I love my veggies so much and have so much respect and awe for what nature creates – they deserve to be the stars of more meals on Kiwi dinner tables. And the delicious meals they turn into for my family just inspire me to create more and more. What are some of your favourite veges and favourite plant-based meals? Too many to choose from! I love my spuds, kumara, eggplant (often underrated), and pumpkin, and since I’ve just been to Italy and Greece, tomatoes (they are so full of flavour there!). As for favourite plant-based meals,

6 24 October, 2019 Metropol

hmmm.... well, I could eat my vegan tacos (with walnut almond chilli and guacamole), masala dosa, and burrito bowls any day, any time. After turning your talented hand to vegetarian and even vegan meals, how surprised have you been at what you’re able to create without dairy, meat and eggs? I did a one-week vegan challenge several years ago and I surprised myself (and my fourthgeneration sheep farmer husband) with how easy and delicious being vegan was. Since then, I’ve always known that vegan food isn’t ‘lacking’ in any way (including flavour, satiety and ease). We’re both still omnivores, but we genuinely love delicious vegan meals done well. How much more adventurous has this encouraged you to get in the kitchen? Creating vegetarian and vegan recipes has actually given me an inspiration boost in the kitchen. I’d almost go as far as saying it has been liberating; once you start with vegetables as the star of your meal, it opens up a whole world of new varieties, flavours and techniques. So many delicious cuisines, like Middle Eastern and Indian, typically have loads of amazing vegetarian dishes so it’s encouraged more experimentation, like my masala dosa and Middle Eastern pita salad. What are your go-to veges for spring? Well, asparagus of course. Because it only makes a fleeting visit, so I go a bit crazy with it while it’s here. Lots of leafy greens (of all sorts) as you’re starting to crave lighter meals, and new spuds. Because, spuds... mmmm!

A LIM Families are increasingly making separate meals for the adults and the children. As a busy mum, what are your go-to family meals? I love a good old spag bol, and it’s always a guaranteed winner with the kids. We also love the creamy tomato, mushroom & black bean shepherd’s pies and kumara, chickpea and mushroom burgers from Vegful.

What are some of your favourite ways to get veges into fussy toddlers? Haha, ummm.... bribe them with ice-cream? I’m not going to lie, that’s what we often resort to. I don’t have any magic tips, sorry. Toddlers are fussy little food critics. I do hide veggies a lot in our meals, like in sauces (the Autumn Harvest sauce in Vegful is great for that). My veggie pops (also in Vegful), contain pineapple, cucumber and spinach, but my two young boys think they’re a treat for eating their veggies. Little do they know the joke is on them, ha!

We have a Nadia Lim plant-based bag delivery and a copy of Nadia’s new book Vegful to give away to two very lucky readers! Just head to the Metropol Facebook page to enter.

What are some of your most versatile vegetables to work with? I’ve just been ‘living’ in Italy for seven weeks, so eggplant, courgettes, capsicum and tomatoes are at the top of my mind. Also, green beans. All of them are super versatile vegetables. That was just about all the vegetables that were in the veggie garden (and there was no supermarket) so I had to get creative with them. But boy you can do a lot of different things with veggies – we would grill, BBQ, slow-roast, roast and blend, have in soup, stuff, steam and stir-fry them. I’d say they cook well anyway except for boiling. How involved do you let Bodhi get in the vege garden and does this make him more engaged with the cooking and consuming of the food? Yes, he is definitely more likely to eat or try something if it’s straight from the garden. Like green beans... he wouldn’t touch them if they’re on his plate but let him pick some young ones straight off the vine and he won’t share any with you. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? Probably lots more cooking and looking after kids. I’m also moving to Central Otago!

Mel Hubber (nee Lowen) and Kim Beswick have spent a combined 22 years in the business at House of Travel Ferrymead, working together as colleagues for many years before purchasing the business in 2016. They have seen many changes in the area but the one constant has been the team and the clientele. ‘We pride ourselves on the fact that our team have been so resilient and willing to adapt to change because the Customer is at the heart of everything we do’ they say. ‘We had the opportunity to design a new store three years ago and we wanted to give customers an exciting retail experience, because we fundamentally believe you have to give people a reason to want to come in-store. Once they realise it’s more efficient, cost effective and enjoyable than doing it themselves then we build trust and develop clients for life’.

“We want this to be Canterbury’s market,” says Riverside General Manager Mike Fisher. “It will be a community gathering place, a hive of activity, and a celebration of the diversity of Christchurch.” A hive of activity it is! From the moment you step inside you feel the buzz of a busy street market and smell the aromas of freshly baked, cooked, and prepared foods of every type imaginable. Inside, the design leads you through a rustic network of stalls featuring the warmth of natural timbers and the strength of iron, elegantly intertwined to produce an industrial heritage vibe. The use of recycled materials – rimu, bricks, salvaged windows, even 100-year-old wallpaper – culminates with the installation of two faces of the now iconic Christchurch Railway Station clock that froze in time at 4.36am on September 4, 2010. There are three levels of activity, with multiple entry points from Cashel Street, Oxford Terrace, and Lichfield Street. With more to come, the ground floor is a cornucopia of delicacies, treats, meals, beverages and foods, cheeses, sauces and more and more and more! Boutique Brewery’s Big Win By Melinda Collins

The story of how Alasdair Cassels took a rundown 19th century tannery and transformed it into a premium shopping and dining destination is almost as iconic Christchurch as the set of buildings that collectively make up The Tannery in the figurative and literal heart of an industrial suburb. But it’s The Tannery’s beer brewing operation which is putting Woolston on the international map.

10 24 October, 2019 Metropol

assels was born in Northern Ireland, moving to New Zealand in 1958. After studying engineering at the University of Canterbury, he headed several maintenance, sandblasting and engineering firms before making the move into property. In 1994 he bought the historic tannery site – the loosely triangular site bounded by Garlands Road, Maunsell Street, Tanner Street and Cumnor Terrace that dates back to about 1874. For Cassels, it was love at first ‘site’. He also had an interest in beer brewing, a hobby he’d been dabbling in for 45 years, since back when Guinness was “the gold standard of stout”. “I wanted to drink something better than what was available in the bar,” Cassels says. “There were really only two or three breweries around at the time and I always thought it was possible to get more taste into the beer.” During a holiday at the family bach in the Marlborough Sounds, he started to pass his love on to his son Zak and son-inlaw Joe Shanks. Despite blowing up the coffee grinder they were grinding the malt in several times, the resulting lager was “beautiful, really beautiful”. It inspired the family to take it further and in 2009, Cassels & Sons Brewing Company was born. Their beers were an instant hit with local outlets and growth was swift. Then the 22 February earthquake hit. “We lost all our customers,” Cassels says. Perhaps what is one of the most compelling points of the Cassels & Sons story is that despite the devastating quake destroying Cassels’ Sumner house, Joe’s Lyttleton house and the original Cassels & Sons brewery, just four months later the trio opened The Brewery at The Tannery site, in a corner building that was initially pegged for demolition. And those beers? They’re no longer just a hit with the locals. Forty-five years after Alasdair started dabbling in brewing, he’s pushed Guinness of its pedestal to take out the top honours in the ‘Best Stout and Porter’ category at the World Beer Awards

for 2019 with the Cassels & Sons milk stout. More than 3500 beers from more than 50 countries entered the prestigious 2019 awards, where judges described the winning drop as, ‘Sooth milk chocolate on the nose; slight pear drop vanilla aroma as well. The body is smooth with rich dark malt flavours. Firm and well rounded. Good beer’. While stout features a distinctive bitterness, milk stout is sweetened by lactose – a form of sugar derived from milk. “It’s quite a complex mix of malt and barley,” Cassels says of the top drop. “There’s not a lot of hops in it. When you drink it, you can taste espresso coffee and chocolate. It does all sorts of strange things to your taste buds. “We can’t keep up with demand!” Suffice to say, the brewery is no longer grinding malt in a coffee grinder. Production has already outgrown The Brewery and moved to a new facility in a nearby building. This year they’ve had to buy six more tanks to meet demand. That demand is already global. The brewery is already exporting containers of beer to China, the UK and Europe, something Alasdair looks forward to continuing and to growing. It’s been said that a successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him and the saying is particularly pertinent when it comes to The Tannery. Cassels quite famously rescued all the brick buildings on site. Despite the fact that it would have been cheaper – and certainly less labour intensive – to demolish and start from scratch, Cassels had 150,000 individual bricks removed from the buildings to make way for an upto-code structural wall, before they were laid back on top. But then the same can be said of beer brewing and of rebuilding; good things take time. “I always wanted the brewery to be internationally recognised. This has put us well on the way,” Cassels says.

The gut/brain connection By Melinda Collins

Did you know that up to 95 percent of serotonin and 50 percent of dopamine – vital brain chemicals which impact our happiness, wellbeing, reward and motivation – are made in the gut?

L

eading Clinical Nutritionist Ben Warren is touring the country this month, helping Kiwis understand the strong link between what they eat and how they feel.

12 24 October, 2019 Metropol

We caught up with Ben about the latest research into our interlinked gut-brain connection and how nourishing your gut can create a more calm, joyful and peaceful mind.

Can you tell us a bit about the connection between gut health and mental health? We’ve probably all experienced a gut feeling, tummy in knots, or butterflies. And the research is starting to show that this is more than ‘just a feeling’. In fact, it turns out that the gut might actually be our ‘second brain’ after all, and its health can impact our emotions and mental wellbeing. Not only is the brain talking to the gut and the rest of the body, but it goes the other way too. The gut is talking to the brain which impacts how we think and feel on a daily level. This feedback loop is known as the gut brain axis – a two-way communication pathway. The gut talks to the brain in a number of ways – through the central nervous system, the autonomic nervous system, through neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine and via the immune system.

Kombucha is being touted as the hottest thing for gut health at the moment, how effective is kombucha and other fermented foods at restoring gut health? While it’s early days for the research on these traditional foods, the research is currently pointing towards having a broader, wider, deeper, more diverse microbiome (primarily the organisms living in our gut – although we have them elsewhere too) – as being associated with better gut health and also our whole body health too. Traditionally fermented foods can help contribute to this broader, wider, more diverse microbiome. In an article published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology titled, ‘Fermented foods, microbiota and mental health: ancient practice meets nutritional psychiatry’ (2014), they answered this exact question. The take home message? Yes, fermented foods are beneficial, not only to our physical health but also to our mental health due to their ability to mitigate inflammation and oxidative stress. In another study looking at neuroticism and social anxiety, a higher frequency of fermented food consumption was associated with fewer symptoms of social anxiety, suggesting that fermented foods containing probiotics may serve as a lowrisk intervention for reducing social anxiety. When it comes to kombucha, I haven’t seen any specific research. However, if made traditionally as a fermented tea, it should contain strains of friendly bacteria as well as the beneficial metabolic byproducts of bacteria fermentation. I do have concerns with the commercialisation of kombucha, particularly how they are making it. They are sometimes using a lot of sugar and not letting it naturally ferment or carbonate, instead carbonating artificially like a regular fizzy drink. I would stick to trusted brands – the ones I go for are New Leaf, Organic Mechanic and Good Buzz. What’s the difference between probiotics and prebiotics, and how critical are these to our gut health? Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that have been shown to have a known benefit to human health, whereas prebiotics are the food that the beneficial bacteria need to survive. Like us, bacteria need food to live!

Our body is home to trillions of bacteria, and it is these bacteria that digest key aspects of our food to synthesise neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine and their precursors. In fact, up to 95 percent of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut by the microbiome. Adding in probiotics (as a supplement or naturally through fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha or coconut yoghurt) is a great way to nourish your gut health back into balance by adding in a diverse range of beneficial bacteria. We can support our bacteria by eating prebiotic-rich foods such as beans, legumes, bananas, raw onion or raw garlic. Eating a variety of vegetables will support diversity as different foods feed different types of bacteria. How are antibiotics and their overuse contributing to poor gut health? There is good research indicating that overuse of antibiotics is contributing to poor gut health. However, I’m not suggesting that you don’t take antibiotics, as they can be lifesaving in certain situations! Rather, I’d recommend taking a high-quality probiotic alongside the antibiotics and consuming fermented foods to minimise the impact on the microbiome. Are supplements all they’ve cracked up to be and what should we be supplementing? Absolutely, the increase in research on the benefits of probiotics for human health has been exponential over the last 20 years. Researchers are now isolating specific strains that impact mood, for example in one study looking at Bacillus coagulans(MTCC5856) on major depression with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the improvement in depression and IBS symptoms was statistically significant and clinically meaningful. In another study looking at Lactobacillus helviticus and Bifido bactaterium longum taken for 30 days they found it decreased global scores of anxiety and depression. It’s very early days in the research currently and there’s a long way to go, but there’s definitely enough research to justify their use. What are some of your key tips for fueling our modern day lives to get best gut – and brain – health outcomes? • Eat a wholefood diet focusing on a variety of vegetables • Take a high-quality probiotic with a wide variety of proven strains • Minimise sugars and artificial sweeteners • Consume fermented foods as part of your daily food intake • Consume chicken and bone broths to support gut healing • Daily movement or exercise can help to modulate the biome by 20 percent! At the core of this is the microbiota, the trillions of bacteria and organisms that live synergistically with us. Research is looking heavily at these mind-altering microorganisms and the impact of the gut microbiota on brain and behaviour, specifically looking at emotions and the mechanisms of things such as probiotics and fermented foods and their ability to control and change how we think and feel; which makes supporting your gut an essential piece of the puzzle when it comes to creating mental wellness.

A talent for theatre

By Melinda Collins

Roy Snow is about to take to the stage as Mervyn, the palagi boyfriend of Elizabeth in The Court Theatre’s milestone Pasifika play Fresh off the Boat which is showing at The Court Theatre until 9 November. We caught up with Roy about the role and what we can look forward to. You’ll always be Shortland Street’s Nurse Matt McAllister to me! But you’ve done a huge number of shows and films since – including Go Girls, Much Ado About Nothing and Outrageous Fortune! What attracted you to acting? Many, many things, all impossible to quantify. That’s what we call, in the business, evading the question. But it’s not that far off the mark. Lots of little things make what I do incredible; playing, pretending, the hum of an audience, amazing creative people, camaraderie and the joy of doing something I’m super passionate about. I’ve stood in the dark wings in that moment before a show kicks off and thought, ‘Wow, not bad Snow, not bad’. All these things are probably a result of, rather than an initial attraction, so I’m going to say, ‘I loved to pretend’. Can you tell us about your latest, Fresh off the Boat, and what you’ve enjoyed about this play? Now this is a play! Ground-breaking when it premiered in the ‘90s, it exploded across New Zealand, the Pacific and then the world.

14 24 October, 2019 Metropol

What a journey it must have been for Pacific Underground and its vastly talented crew. No history lesson from me, I’m not qualified. But I can speak to the absolute joy this production has been to work on. So much passion, love and history in the room. You have uber talented daughters playing roles their mum, our director, and aunty played in the original production. We’re visited often by members of the Samoan community and laughter and music go hand in hand with the hard work being put in on the ‘boards’. It’s been a privilege just to be in the room. Why should audiences get in to see this show? Because so much of this play resonates 25 years after its Christchurch debut. Its themes are timeless: family, dislocation, culture clashes, discovering your freedom, growing up and dealing with everything that entails. Wrap that up in humour, aroha, music and a fair amount of ‘90s pop culture and you’ve got one heck of a play. See it. And… I’m in it.

How much of a different beast is live theatre to a soap opera? It’s a different beast but mostly due to the technicality of each medium… boring! As an actor you notice the immediacy of theatre. You know or can feel when you’re in the zone on stage whereas screen has a few more ‘filters’ before it reaches your audience. Both are challenging, both are rewarding and once you’re over the initial nerves, a lot of fun. What have been some of your most memorable roles over the years? Oliver Twist. I was ten, it was my first musical. My mum played Nancy and was the star. Here I experienced my first moment of theatre magic. Mum had just sung As Long As He Needs Me and was in the throes of being murdered by the villainous Bill Sykes. I stood in the wings, I couldn’t see anything only hear the screams and pitiful pleas as the life was strangled out of my mum. Then nothing, a silence that, in my young brain, went on forever. In the Balclutha Community Hall, 400 people sat in complete silence for, what seemed to me, an eternity. It stuck with me ever since. What’s the best part about what you get to do? That I get to do it at all. I’ve been very fortunate and many wonderful people have contributed to the success I’ve had, none more so than my beautiful wife and whānau. I love what I do; that’s the best part. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? That would be telling… That’s actor code for ‘no idea’. Not exactly true – I have a few irons in the fire that may include a musical and a touring show up north in 2020, but such is the nature of this ‘bizz’ that nothing is confirmed until I’ve signed on the dotted line. Straight after Fresh off the Boat I’m into A Christmas Carol at The Forge at The Court Theatre, which will take me right up to Christmas. Then, perhaps, a bit of ‘reno’ on my house in Geraldine if my wife has her way… and she will. Read more about this milestone Pasifika play on page 22.

Defying the odds

Marty Murchison, owner of Master Builder Murchison Homes, lives his life defying the odds. When you meet this rather enigmatic character, a feeling of ‘anything really is possible’ is immediately impressed upon you. It might be his signature laugh. Perhaps it’s his smarts and gumption. It could be his zest for life. More than likely, it’s a combination of all of these things that makes Marty so genuinely likeable and trustworthy.

A

man of his word, Marty has lived his life giving his ambitious goals the wings to fly. At 20, he bought his own house, which in itself is a remarkable feat for someone earning $30,000 a year at the time. But then you add an intense case of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome into the equation and herein lies the knack for defying the odds. Chronic Fatigue is a disease characterised by profound exhaustion, among other symptoms, that are exacerbated when the person suffering exerts themselves. In spite of this, Marty found reprieve and rehabilitation by chipping away at renovating his new doer-upper. “When I

Marty is offering to build one individual or couple a beautiful home in Ravenwood.

found I had the energy to get on the tools, there was no place I’d rather be.” Restless to challenge himself further, at 22, Marty declared his intent to be mortgage free by 23. The plan that he concocted and cleverly executed was nothing short of genius. He negotiated with the former Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) to buy an otherwise derelict red zone property which he relocated and renovated. “The only limitation is what you believe is possible. When you decide what you believe, you will see what you can achieve.” The best part of this story is that Marty is about to help someone else defy the odds. Enter The Great Build Up, an inaugural initiative that will change the life of one deserving individual or couple. If you are a first home buyer, and meet the right financial criteria, Murchison Homes wants to hear from you. Marty is offering to build one individual or couple a beautiful home in Ravenwood, Canterbury and will pay the mortgage on this home for a whole year, up to the value of $25,000. In return, this individual or couple will agree to their home becoming a showhome on weekends, with one weekend off a month. “First and foremost, it is a privilege to be able to help an individual or couple get ahead in life. It’s also an opportunity for us to reimagine the showhome experience.” Entries close 5pm, Sunday 10 November 2019 with shortlisting, interviewing, and selection taking place by Saturday 7 December 2019. Building will commence Monday 20 January 2020. Visit www.murchisonhomes.co.nz to enter and for full terms and conditions. Metropol 24 October, 2019 19

LOOKING FORWARD Real Estate is a dynamic and engaging industry that ultimately centres around people.

W

ith the expendable society of today, people wanting to further themselves often look to a career in real estate to tap into their true potential. It is an effective way of curating the lifestyle you desire.

Personally, I started my career working with Land and Deeds. Then, more than three decades ago, I decided to make the shift to real estate - an industry which I continue to be passionate about to this day. Real estate rewards those who work hard and are committed to going the extra mile. If you put in the work, you’ll see big returns, with flexibility and earning potential that eclipses that of a regular 9-5 role. It’s a dynamic and engaging industry that ultimately centres around people. If you’re driven by a passion for your job and you love what you do, then the sky truly is the limit.

Australasian real estate coach, Tom Panos, identified that hard work alone does not always make for a top performing agent. However, if you combine your dedication with organisation and tenacity, he believes you have a recipe for success. There really are no hard and fast rules about who can build an extraordinary career in real estate. Life experience, communication skills, and a positive attitude all go a long way in this industry. In fact, many top-performing agents started out in completely different sectors – from retail and hospitality to farming, construction, education, and everything in between! But they all have something in common – a relentless commitment to service. Delivering outstanding service is the only way to build your reputation in real estate. This comes down to empathy, honesty and authenticity. It means being reliable, always following through, and having a genuine desire to put people first. Regardless of the news to be

delivered, vendors need to be kept in the loop, so effective communication skills are a must. I find that a lot of people who come to real estate later in life end up wishing they’d started earlier. So why wait? Call me for a confidential chat to find out how you can enter the wonderful, and very rewarding, world of real estate.

In the city Pasifika play returns Twenty-five years ago, Pasifika play Fresh Off the Boat debuted before New Zealand audiences; now, a new generation can experience this ground-breaking play at The Court Theatre from 19 October to 9 November.

T

he story follows Charles as he emigrates from Samoa to 1990s Christchurch for a new life in Aotearoa, but he soon finds the fantasy weaved for him comes with a few holes. Directed by original cast member Tanya Muagututi’a, her two daughters, Talia-Rae and Josephine Mavaega, take on the same roles that Tanya and her sister, Mishelle Muagututi’a, played in the original production! “It’s special because I’m working with my daughters – and they’re playing the sisters that I played with Mishelle 25 years ago! Who knew that was ever going to happen? When I was in the production, I wasn’t even thinking about children... it’s amazing,” Muagututi’a says. Completing this family affair is Tanya’s husband, Posenai Mavaega, creating sound design, with her brother-in-law, Tony De Goldi, designing the set. Written by Oscar Kightley (bro’Town; Sione’s Wedding) and Simon Small, the play’s 1993 roaring success saw it tour New Zealand, followed by Australia and Samoa,

with Muagututi’a playing the role of Ula from 1993 – 1995. The cast also features Sela Faletolu-Fasi, Jake Arona, Roy Snow and Albany Peseta, all of whom performed in the rehearsed reading last year at The Court Theatre as part of New Zealand Theatre Month celebrations. Following its success, the Artistic team at The Court decided to revive the play for a full season. “Fresh Off the Boat is, historically, an incredibly important Pasifika play,” Artistic Director Ross Gumbley says. “It still works brilliantly and is perhaps even more poignant now than when it was written – as was shown when it was the star piece of writing in our 2018 Indelible Ink season.” Described as hilarious but also sobering, this Pasifika play tells a story that culturally challenges us as Kiwis, yet is universal; it’s a story about family, culture shock and looking out for each other. With throwbacks to the ‘90s aplenty, audiences will love the comedy but can also expect to be taken on quite an affecting journey. For bookings, phone 0800 333 100 or www.courttheatre.org.nz.

You’re celebrating an amazing 10-year milestone in business… How did Loobie’s Story come to be? Loobie’s Story started when I found myself suddenly let go of my job as a creative director in fashion, a job that I had lived and loved for 20 years. Sitting at my dining room table with my husband Brent (about the same time he sold his menswear business), I decided it was time to venture into womenswear and create my own path, and so Loobie’s Story was born. I wanted to create a brand that was bohemian, light and fun – inspired by exotic locations and my love of travel. I feel so lucky to have been able to grow Loobie’s Story to what it is now over the past 10 years, with much more still to come!

What’s the story behind the name? In a nod to my new business partner (my husband Brent), we named the brand after the nickname he affectionately made up for me when we first met, Loobie. Inspired by a blonde, blue-eyed little girl in an advert for washing powder – someone he thought I might have looked like when I was little. Now all of my nearest and dearest call me Loobie. You’re now stocked in an impressive 140 stores! Why do you think New Zealand women have connected so strongly with the brand? We started Loobie’s Story in a time when nearly everyone else was doing black and I think New Zealand women loved the bohemian spirit and colour in what we were

doing. We continue to create each collection for a woman who is not afraid to buck the trends or stand out in a crowd whilst ensuring that every piece is still incredibly wearable. We’re inspired by far-flung exotic locales, to create pieces that can be loved as everyday wear or occasion wear for women across New Zealand and Australia. I think these core pillars of our brand are some of the reasons that New Zealand women love Loobie’s and we’ve amassed such an amazing network of retailers across New Zealand and Australia over the past decade. Sustainability is something you’re increasingly passionate about. What are some of the sustainability measures you have in place? Sustainability is a growing focus for our business and something we’re committed to. Each season our team mindfully designs collectible pieces; styles made to live comfortably in wardrobes for years to come. At the same time, our technical team work hard with

How would you describe the Loobie’s Story design philosophy? The design philosophy for Loobie’s Story is all about understated glamour, beautiful prints, joyful colour and natural fabrics like easy-care viscose, silk, and perhaps the ultimate combination of opulence and practicality – silk with a little stretch. We focus on bringing a little bit of luxury to the everyday whether that be an outfit for your 9-to-5 or something for special occasions. The more elevated pieces are complemented with the everyday styles that underpin any hardworking capsule wardrobe and are made in the same shades found in the prints across the range. The idea was to make it easy for women to combine and layer our garments with complementary colour palettes that merge across seasons so they can confidently pull their own look together, whatever the occasion. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? We will continue to ensure that we keep delivering what the market wants from both our brands, Loobie’s Story and Madly Sweetly, with collections that inspire our customers and fulfil their needs. Of course as a design team we are focused on integrating as many sustainable fabrics and yarns into our collections as possible to ensure that we are playing our part in protecting the environment. There are a few other exciting plans in the pipeline too… watch this space!

While a proposal has the ability to incite indescribable elation, it is the engagement ring itself that embodies the sentiment behind the decision.

A

lthough engagements and the rings that signify them may be common, with the revolutionary technology utilised by Polished Diamonds – Jewellery Design – you can get something extraordinary. Using CAD technology, which has revolutionised the art of jewellery design and manufacturing, this talented team can create the ultimate engagement, wedding or ‘just-because’ ring, combining

breath-taking GIA certified diamonds and coloured gemstones with exquisite craftsmanship. “We custom make each ring to ensure the ultimate engineering precision,” owner Daniel Joines says. “Our CAD technology enables our clients to see the proportions of their ring before it is made and work to 0.01mm – less than a human hair – because we recognise that precision is the difference between ordinary and the ‘wow factor’.” To get that ‘wow factor’ for yourself, visit the design studio at 30 New Regent Street or www.polisheddiamonds.co.nz. Summer Skincare

Just as we modify our wardrobe for lighter clothing in summer, the same applies for our skincare regime due to the heat and humidity. We caught up with Natural Zest Skincare’s Amanda Grindrod about her top five tips for looking after your skin this summer.

Engagement Perfection

1. A no-brainer: use a broad-

spectrum sunscreen of SPF30 or above and remember to reapply.

2. Review your makeup collection; is

it non-comedogenic? (A product which is made without ingredients which clog your pores.)

3. Use more lightweight products –

consider swapping heavy cream cleansers for a lighter foaming cleanser, like Natural Zest’s Bearberry Leaf Foaming Cleanser.

4. Freshen skin with a toner – be sure

to choose water-based toners, such as Natural Zest’s Sweet Orange & Neroli Facial Toner, rather than ones containing alcohol as these can dry the skin.

5. Protect your skin from the harsh

rays; stay in the shade, and wear a hat and sunglasses! www.naturalzestskincare.co.nz

Rent a wardrobe!

Designer Wardrobe has opened its second rental store right here in Christchurch, giving ladies access to more than 1600 designer pieces from Trelise Cooper and Ruby to Zimmermann and many more.

T

here are outfits for every occasion, from race day and weddings to school formals or corporate balls. Designer Wardrobe buys clothing for all ages in sizes 6-18, so there’s something for everyone. New items arrive every week, and you’ll find sold-out iconic pieces plus outfits unique to Designer Wardrobe, created in collaboration with New Zealand designers. Designer Wardrobe is a community of more than 160,000 New Zealand women who buy, sell and rent designer clothing. After the success of their first designer rental store in Auckland, they couldn’t wait to get to down to Christchurch, and couldn’t do it without local Mary Outram joining the team! “The team is there to help you choose the perfect outfit, and minor alterations are done on site,” Mary says.

“Pieces are generally rented for four days, but you can extend for as long as you need, for holidays or overseas weddings. Clothes aren’t just something that you put on and wear; they have the ability to change your entire mood. It is so rewarding to see a woman leave feeling amazing and with something fab to wear.” Prices start at $39. The store is open 10am-5:30pm weekdays (7pm on Thursdays), Saturday 10am-3pm and Sunday 11am-3pm, with parking right at the door. No appointments needed!

OH BABY! Baby blue has been making waves for decades and is certainly a musthave shade for the spring season. Maxi and midi dresses, mac coats and barely-there strappy sandals in this dreamy hue will see you out the door in sophisticated style, while baby blue leather or faux fur is sure to turn heads. BE A PRINCESS Not for the faint-hearted, princess blue glimmered magnificently during major SS19 fashion shows. Either a flowy or fitted midi dress with a sweetheart or straight neckline in this vividly vivacious shade is sure to give you that Hollywood glam, especially when paired with diamonds or pearls – a look fit for a queen!

IN THE NAVY Boundless in its versatility, navy is a regal, dependable colour. Pair navy blazers and blouses with crisp white skirts or trousers for clean and sensible contrast. For the statement makers, teaming navy with strong colours such as red, purple and pink gives bold chromatic strength. TOUCH OF TURQUOISE Make an entrance at any event this summer with turquoise, a dazzling shade of blue that dares to be louder and prouder than the rest. As we get a first glimpse at the international SS20 fashion shows, trend forecasters predict a rise more muted shades of aquatic colours like turquoise, aqua, teal and mosaic blue for the coming year, but don’t worry – the traditional turquoise still stands strong.

PLAYING DRESS UP DOLLS

By Tracey Edwardes

Who would have thought a love of dressing old-school paper dolls in the early ’50s would transform into an awardwinning design at the World of Wearable Arts Awards.

P

lacing second for her Dress-up Dolls entry in the Transform section of this year’s competition, Meg Latham coincidently grew up where WOW originated 31 years ago Spring Grove. Meg won her first award amongst competition from 115 finalists and entries from 43 countries. She first entered in 1994, and then intermittently until 2003, before returning in 2018 with ‘Titty Tote’ – a handbag bra conjured from recycled leather and zips, with handles that became bra straps. As a young girl, she created everything from scratch from what she could find.

comfortable and the outfits durable. “The dresses were created from canvascovered polyethylene plastic cylinders that kind of folded into themselves. The costume changes transformed, just like opening the pages of a book. It’s almost trickery – hard to describe and explain it!” Although Meg recognises the high-tech world that lends the wow-factor to the show, such as lasercuts and 3D printing, she embraces technology on a modest “lowtech” level. “Hands-on construction is how I like to put it,” she says. “The best of the both worlds.” Meg is amazed there has been very little repetition of ideas in the years of the event. “There’s a fine line between fancy dress and wearable art. I have to constantly think about the direction I’m taking. I also like my garments to have an element of fun and lightness.” Already well into planning her creation for next year, Meg says it will remain top secret until the big reveal on stage in 2020 if successful. “I just love the process,” she reiterates. “I almost don’t want it to end – I savour every moment. Seeing it finally come to life on stage is just a bonus.” Meg Latham’s Dress-up Dolls are on display at WOW Museum in Nelson. Her unique portraits are also showcased at Nelson’s Parker Gallery.

“I loved paper dolls, but I preferred to design my own outfits, other than the ones they came with.” Her mum was a keen sewer, and her dad an inventive jack of all trades. Little Meg created alongside him, even using a welding and soldering gun. Twin-sister Fleur Stewart, also an artist, also collaborated with two of her WOW designs over the years. “We were a self-contained family, having fun, and making things.” Although spending most of her career in Nelson working as a professional ceramic artist, Meg now calls Motueka home. Life took on a new direction when Meg began creating mixed-media portraiture. The craft utilises her digital imagery and graphic design skills attained from draughting and cartography training. “Instead of old recycled materials, I use materials like plastics and resins to lay over digital imagery. Many are offcuts and fabric samples a builder or decorator would use – otherwise destined for the skip. In September, two models became Meg’s Dress-up Dolls – magically performing a costume change on the WOW stage, from blues and pinks to green, yellow and orange. “I had actually been planning the Dressup Dolls design over the last five years. Construction of the garments only took four weeks, but there was an awful lot of time put into how it all works – from the technicalities and ensuring the models are

Be a stud By Clementine Page

Cue the revival of yet another ‘90s craze: studded silhouettes return as the ultimate embellishment of 2019. Small studs, big studs, spikes, rhinestones… if it’s studded, we want it. Check out our styling tips ahead. FOOTWEAR WITH FLAIR The easiest way to embrace this edgy trend is with footwear – studded strappy sandals, studded stilettos and studded boots are all statement shoes. Studded platform stompers or trendy embellished mules – which will it be? Attention fashion followers: shoes with studded or spiked heels and/ or toes are a funky street style silhouette that’s attracting attention. TRADITIONAL TWIST Traditional clothing is getting the studded treatment – plain white blouses with a studded collar or shoulders are making their grungy appearance amongst the other punky trends of 2019, while denim miniskirts and shorts with studs on one half are a summer wardrobe must-have. GLAM GRUNGE Studded leather of any kind is the epitome of rock ‘n’ roll glam. Toughen up any feminine aesthetic with a bespangled leather biker jacket; the iconic silhouette reminiscent of ‘90s grunge. Pair with coloured snakeskin, a dark red lip or chunky hoops - or all three.

HEAD FIRST! Feminine meets rock chick with a studded headband. Headbands scattered with jewels and other embellishments were seen amongst the 50 gloriously overthe-top alice bands featured in Prada’s SS19 runway looks – and of course, studs were the star of the show. BELTS WITH BLING If there’s one accessory you need in your closet this season, it’s a studded belt. Add a little bling to an otherwise plain outfit – cinch that classic LBD at the waist and pair with platform heels for an edgy nighttime ensemble, or team with distressed denim and a simple tee for that casual weekend go-to.

3

PUNKY PURSE Bags, purses and clutches have long been in the embellishment game, but they’re getting a starstudded twist this season. Play it safe with a studded black wallet, or go big and bold by way of a fluorescent shoulder bag adorned with spikes: need inspo? Check out Valentino’s ‘Rockstud Spike Fluo’, the iconic new neon bag collection straight off the SS20 runway.

Dancing with the Stars finalist has launched All Bodies Welcome Here, a clothing brand dedicated to making every feel welcome and comfortable in society. Jess lost her right leg from the knee down at age nine due to cancer and was so insecure about her lost limb that as a teenager, she went years without wearing shorts. She now walks with the aid of a prosthetic leg or blade and doesn’t let anything hold her back from living an active lifestyle. At 25, Jess is a brand ambassador for Nike and AIA NZ, among others, and a fashion model who recently walked the catwalk at 2019’s Melbourne Fashion Week. She has more than 180,000 Instagram followers. Earlier this year, she launched a petition to legally require brands to declare if photos used in their advertising have been airbrushed or photoshopped, after discovering that photos of her taken for a magazine article had been retouched. Jess established All Bodies Welcome Here in mid-2019 as a body positive clothing business – and the story has only just begun. For now, Jess has launched a range of men’s and women’s hoodies to spread the brand’s message. The brand’s mission is simple: to make everyone feel included and comfortable in society no matter their appearance, background or life story. After all, your story makes you, well, you. www.allbodieswelcomehere.co.

Growing families One of the founders of fertility services in Canterbury is returning from Australia to become Genea Oxford Fertility’s Medical Director.

F

ertility specialist Dr Pete Benny, who is currently the Medical Director of Monash IVF NSW and an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, will return to Christchurch to take up his

new role in the New Year. As well as helping Genea Oxford Fertility patients to grow their families, he will be training new fertility specialists to work at the clinic. “I had always planned to come back

Fertility expert returns home to head Genea Oxford Fertility

to Christchurch and was lucky to be presented with this exciting opportunity,” he says. Prior to leaving Christchurch, Dr Benny practiced as an obstetrician and gynaecologist and held a number of roles in the city’s burgeoning fertility services. These included Clinical Director of Canterbury District Health Board’s IVF Unit until 1993; Medical Director of Healthlink South’s IVF service until 1996; Medical Director of The Fertility Centre until 2008; and Medical Director of Repromed Christchurch (now Fertility Associates) until 2010. “Many of the people I worked with are still in Christchurch, including (Genea Oxford Fertility specialists) Janene Brown and Richard Dover. I am really looking forward to being back amongst them.” Dr Benny says he finds his specialty endlessly interesting. “One of the things that is fascinating me at the moment is research into how the uterus and embryos communicate with each other. It seems highly likely that embryos send a number of messages that the uterus reads and then decides whether or not to accept them. It is so interesting to think about what those messages might be,” he says. “The biggest issue around the world is of course educating society about what happens with fertility and ageing. People need a better understanding, so that they start planning their fertility and don’t leave it too long.” Appointments are now being taken for consultations with Dr Benny in the New Year. Simply call Genea Oxford Fertility on 0800 377 894 or ask your General Practitioner for a referral.

LOSING THE HOUSE ARE THERE ALTERNATIVES?

If you were to go into long-term residential care, do you fear that all your hard-earned assets will be used to pay for that care? Kannangara Thomson Partner Brent Selwyn fills us in on the alternatives.

L

et’s get one thing clear. Senior care is expensive and it is asset and income tested. With an ageing population, coupled with low birth rates, there will be increasingly fewer tax payers compared to the number of people in care. For that reason alone, you should know that asset and income testing for senior residential care is here to stay. When one of a couple goes into care, the family home is not at risk. The home is exempt as an asset for the purpose of asset testing if a spouse or dependent child lives in it. In addition, the family car and other assets to the value of $126,224 are exempt. Everything else must be

used to pay for the care of the partner in long-term residential care. Another problem for the partner left in the family home is that most of their partner’s pension will now go toward their care. The partner in the family home has to make do on one pension and a living-alone allowance. When one of a couple dies, traditional property ownership sees the family home and all other jointly owned assets pass to the survivor by ‘survivorship’. If the survivor then goes into care, the problem is exponentially amplified because the family home is no longer exempt.

The survivor of a couple going into residential care in those circumstances is allowed exempt assets of $230,495 including the house and car. Their pension is nearly all used for their care also. For most seniors, a trust is not the answer. Although gift duty has been abolished, the Ministry of Social Development still imposes an ‘allowable gift’ of $27,000 per application in each 12-month period. Anything above that will be clawed back into your assets and used for your care. However, there is a possible partial solution for couples. It lies in how you own the family home. If you have your home ownership structured so that

you each own a distinct share of it, you can then leave a different type of will, known as a ‘life interest will’ whereby instead of your partner inheriting the whole house, you leave them a life interest in your share of it when you die. If the survivor then goes into care, they only need to declare among their assets the share of the property they own personally. If that sounds like a possible solution to a problem for you or an older family member, call Brent Selwyn now on 03 377 4421 to book a no-obligation appointment to see if a simple change of ownership structure could protect your assets. he Woodchester Walls and Waterfalls Tour (yes, there’s even a waterfall created as the lake spills over the dam) is expected to be popular with people keen to see the impact of the earthquake on the vast high country of Woodchester Station. If you’re wondering about the connection between a Garden Festival and a tour of earthquake damage, the answer is the earthquake did more than shake up North Canterbury. It stirred local garden owners into creating New Zealand’s newest garden festival as a way to help with earthquake recovery in the Hurunui District. “The Hurunui District was a playground for Christchurch residents who came up here for the hot pools, the wineries and exploring all the wonderful wide open spaces,” Festival Organising Committee Chair Marina Shearer says. “With State Highway 1 closed and a constant ripple of aftershocks, people stayed away in their droves. The impact was felt across the district as businesses struggled when visitor numbers fell.” Shearer and five friends, all of whom had beautiful gardens,

hatched a plan to open their gardens and offer warm rural hospitality to visitors wanting to enjoy a day in the tranquility of the country. The six gardens opened over four days in 2017, attracting visitors from far and wide. In 2018 the event was upscaled into a district-wide festival that attracted more than 4,000 visits to gardens. For 2019, the festival has expanded to include 23 gardens and two tours. “Visitors told us they liked the eclectic mixture of town and country gardens, so we’re adding new gardens in Hanmer Springs, in the remote Kaiwara Valley and on farms around Culverden. We feel really privileged to share them with garden lovers from Canterbury and New Zealand.” The 2016 Waiau-Kaikoura earthquake stirred Hurunui District garden owners into creating New Zealand’s newest Garden Festival. Although it’s only the second year the event has run, with six new gardens, two tours and exhibitions, talks and stalls in gardens, expectations for another successful festival are understandably high. Celebrating Taranaki’s vibrant heart

The Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival has been presenting a selection of gardens each spring for over a decade – 2019 marks the fifteenth edition. “T

he Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival is a ten-day adventure into 40 of the most amazingly eclectic gardens that are found throughout the region,” says John Lucas, Chairman of the Taranaki Garden Trust that stages the event. Pick up the comprehensive brochure at your i-Site or at major Garden Centres, or download it from

www.taranakigardens.co.nz. Full details of each garden or place of interest, time of opening, contact details and detailed maps are in the brochure so visitors can plan their route to explore several gardens in each area. Celebrating Oamaru’s colonial heyday Oamaru is about to undergo its annual metamorphosis, stepping back in time to the Victorian era. From 13 to 17 November, the town will celebrate its colonial heyday, with old fashioned entertainment, historical information and people promenading in period costumes.

A

variety of events have been tailored to the 2019 theme of ‘Wheels’ – celebrating local cycle history, farming history and innovation – they vary from the ever-popular Crombie & Price Victorian Garden Party and Gentleman’s Relish to the formal Queen Victoria’s Birthday Ball. of bicycles in women’s freedom. Throughout the celebrations, there are talks and tours exploring the history of Oamaru, machinery and the revolution of the bicycle. It has been 25 years since the first Heritage Bicycle Championships, and Oamaru Ordinary Cycle Club is celebrating in style with New Zealand’s foremost heritage cycling event, attracting wheelmen and women from all around the globe. This will be another high-thrills afternoon, as riders participate in sprints, slaloms, relays, slow races, and the ghastly Tyne Street Grunter. With sections for both Penny Farthings and pre-10 speed safeties, it is spectacular for competitor and spectator alike. On Saturday, join Dr Jane Malthus as she explores the history of bicycle wheels and dress reform in the late 19th century. For those who want to dress in Victorian costumes, there’s an astonishing array to choose from at the Victorian Wardrobe in Harbour Street. For more information, visit www.vhc.co.nz.

New kids on the block We’re quickly heading into entertaining season, so let’s toast the new kids on the culinary block; some of the hottest tipples making waves in our southern spot.

Pete’s Natural Pete’s Natural, a small family-owned business located in Motueka, is the first to market in New Zealand with a hemp seed-infused functional beverage. Its Hemp Manuka Sparkling beverage and Lemon Manuka Switchel have just hit the market after legislation changed in November 2018, allowing hemp seeds to be incorporated into foods. Not only rich in both omega 3 and 6, these seeds also contain high levels of antioxidants that support a healthy heart, healthy skin and reduce inflammation. Beverages are brewed using 100 percent New Zealand-grown freshly squeezed spray-free fruits, and natural ingredients. They contain no additives, artificial preservatives, concentrates, colours or flavours, and are gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan-friendly. Roku Gin Roku is the premium Japanese craft gin created by the House of Suntory in Osaka, Japan, built in 1919. Adored by many, Roku has taken the New Zealand market by storm, known for its unique combination of botanicals. Roku in Japanese means ‘six’ which references the six Japanese botanicals used; sakura leaf, sakura flower, sencha tea, gyokuro tea, sansho pepper and yuzu peel. What we love most about Roku is its focus on achieving excellence and perfection, aligning with the Japanese concept of Shun. The botanicals used in its creation have been harvested in their prime season to ensure the utmost freshness and flavour. Legent East meets west as this first-of-its-kind bourbon melds Kentucky distilling tradition with Japanese blending excellence. Legent (pronounced ‘lee-jent’) is a unique innovation that starts as a Kentucky Straight Bourbon with the Beam classic family recipe and is aged in wine and sherry casks before being blended with more Kentucky Straight Bourbon, resulting in a perfectly balanced yet complex and layered whiskey. The super-premium bourbon is expertly distilled by Fred Noe, seventh-generation Master Distiller of Jim Beam and great-grandson of the man himself, and artfully blended by Shinji Fukuyo, fifth-ever Chief Blender of Suntory, the founding house of Japanese whisky.

CURRIED CAULIFLOWER, CHICKPEAS & MANGO SALAD GF | DF | VEGAN

Extracted from Vegful by Nadia Lim NUT YOGHURT O C D RE CO SS H SERVES IT IN

Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 15–20 minutes

Chickpeas love a good spicing; otherwise they can be a bit bland and boring. Then they make a great base for filling, hearty, flavour-packed salads like this one with spice-roasted cauliflower, fresh mango, a kick of chilli and a creamy coconut dressing. There’s a bit of Pacific and Indian fusion going on here and the result is sublime. INGREDIENTS 1 small head cauliflower, chopped into florets 400g can chickpeas, rinsed, drained and patted dry with paper towels 1 cup natural cashew nuts 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 ¼ teaspoons curry powder 1 ¼ teaspoons cumin seeds, crushed 1 ¼ teaspoons coriander seeds, crushed 2–3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 tablespoons maple syrup 1 ripe mango, peeled and diced 3 handfuls of baby spinach 1 red or green chilli, finely sliced 2 spring onions, finely sliced (mostly green part) ½ cup chopped coriander 56 24 October, 2019 Metropol

COCONUT YOGHURT DRESSING ½ cup natural unsweetened coconut yoghurt Juice of 1 lime ¼ – ½ teaspoon curry powder 1. Preheat oven to 220°C. Line an oven tray with baking paper. 2. In a large bowl, toss cauliflower, chickpeas and cashew nuts with olive oil, curry powder, cumin and coriander seeds, garlic and maple syrup. Season with salt and pepper, tip onto lined tray and roast for about 15–20 minutes until cauliflower is just tender and golden. 3. Mix all dressing ingredients together and season with a little salt. 4. Set roast cauliflower mixture aside to cool slightly. Just before serving, toss with mango, baby spinach, chilli, spring onion and coriander and drizzle with the dressing.

Diners pay a $10 booking fee to secure the discount and are treated to half-price meals for two, three or four people when booking the restaurant’s first table of the evening, lunch or breakfast time. Joiner expands repertoire

Any joiner operating at the top of their game in the twenty-first century understands how to work with a vast range of materials and master the gamut of styles. Murray Hewitt, Director of Murray Hewitt Joinery, delights in the fact that the craft of joinery once relied on wood, screws and glue, and now it has added the latest in modern construction technology to its repertoire.

he head office of Ray White in Papanui is a case in point. Lining the walls are Muros lightweight fibreglass panels which give the effect of old railway sleepers. They are textured with deep aged wood grain, knots and weathered imperfections. In the staff relaxation area, tiles cleverly create artificial hedging to make a feature wall, while the reception area is lined in Plytech Light Beton – an MDF product surfaced in real concrete at just 2mm thick. The reception counter is also clad in the hedging tiles and flooring is T&G planking in Burnt Larch. “This was a great project, coming in with completely new and disparate products and seeing how great the finished look is; the new products work together beautifully,” Murray says. Another job utilised Kiwi innovated Kaynemaile – interlocking plastic rings like chainmail – to form a screen between vanity and toilet. “Of course, we still relish the opportunity to utilise our traditional skill and craftsmanship on work in timber doors and windows,” Murray says. “And to rebuild and restore an original kauri staircase is a real joy.”

Rich In Citrus T

he orange rear wall packs a punch in Resene Twisted Sister, while the complementing accessories pop in softer, more muted shades, such as a short round vase in Resene Thumbs Up, a small bowl in Resene Moonlight, a tall angular vase in Resene Yuma and a table bowl in Resene Crowdpleaser. The sideboard they sit on is painted in Resene Swiss Caramel, the chair in Resene Moccasin and the pendant light in Resene Spanish White. The room is fresh and appealing but escapes being too pretty and light, plus it’s a citrus scheme that will transcend the seasons and not be locked into summer or spring. Other walls in the space are painted in Resene Half Spanish White as a neutral counterpoint, while goldenstained Resene Colorwood Natural finished timber adds further oomph to the warm glow of the room.

This rich, warm dining space is a sophisticated take on a classic citrus. Rather than using the fresh, light colours normally associated with a citrus-inspired scheme, this one opts for a richer, full-bodied look instead.

Despite this deep orange being such a striking colour, it is surprisingly adaptable to a variety of interior styles; here it has a clean architectural look. By changing out some accessories, colour accents and furniture, you can style to your own taste for a completely unique look. Here’s some tips to get you started: Swap the table for a chunkier version, add leather chairs, a potted cacti and denim blue accessories and you have an American dessert theme. Go for mid-century furniture and teal and mustard accents for retro appeal. Stay with the mid-century furniture but add pop art and palms for a Californian cool vibe. Add textured pots, baskets, an old oak table, potted lavender or daisies, and classic cream earthenware for a Mediterranean feel. Or how about touches of turquoise, antiqued silver, purple, large urns and tiles for some Moroccan magic?

home Angelique Armstrong Armstrong Interiors Ltd

Go Alfresco

With hot days and balmy nights ahead, there’s no better time to update your outdoor living area. We chat to interior designer Angelique Armstrong about outdoor living design. With daylight savings now making our evenings warmer and brighter, what should we consider for our outdoor living spaces? Indoor-outdoor flow is one thing Kiwis love about our summers. Gone are the days where the architects put kitchens on the south side of the house. Now our kitchens are at the forefront of living spaces, so consider maximising flow and space and extending this idea outside. Set this up like you would inside, and consider situating the barbecue in good proximity to family and guests you are cooking for as well as whether there is appropriate shelter from the wind and sun.

When choosing outdoor furniture and accessories, do we need to match the colour palette that we have in our interiors or is this a good place to add more colour? When choosing outdoor furniture, it is good to continue the feel of the design theme you have within the rest of your home. However, a nice way to add colour is with cushion scarabs and scatter cushions, bean bags and accessories like an outdoor dining set or placemats. These can be changed yearly for a different aesthetic if desired.

What are your tips for creating an outdoor kitchen/barbecue area? At Armstrong Interiors we have experience with designing outdoor barbecue areas. Using UV-based materials and hardwearing options for extreme weather elements is a must. Outdoor kitchen taps and sinks all need to be of marine quality. Fireplaces also complement and tie in the materials, scales and proportions for an overall timeless design. What are some exterior must-haves for summer? It is more and more popular to have an outdoor seating/lounge area. I recommend either a modular sofa with side tables and a centre table, or two outdoor sofas of the same size and a couple of matching chairs and perhaps an outdoor rug. The idea is to treat this like an outdoor room – keep the space intimate and not too spread out. Have some big blankets on-hand ready to wrap around yourself when the nights become a bit cooler in temperature.

SUSTAINABILITY IN ARCHITECTURE With interest growing in sustainable lifestyles, we caught up with architect Craig South of Allfrey + South Architects for his thoughts on the role architecture has to play in the sustainability equation.

Sustainability means different things to different people. As an architect, what does sustainability mean to you? I think we all have our own ideas on what comprises a sustainable lifestyle. For some people, it has a lot to do with location and wanting to live close to where they work. For others, it may be about choosing a home with a smaller footprint or wanting to install solar panels. In our practice, we listen closely to our clients and are very happy to work with them to achieve their particular goals in this area.

Discussing sustainability in architecture might once have been considered a little unorthodox, but it is now an almost universal aspiration for people to want to live in well-insulated, energy-efficient homes. We live in a world where we have to make more sustainable choices and, as a practice, this is something we consciously and actively accept. We currently have a number of projects underway from alterations to new passive houses that set very high sustainability standards. Why is sustainable architecture important? We want to create beautiful architecture that people can enjoy living in, so there’s still a balance that needs to be struck. It would be a mistake to prioritise sustainability above all else but, of course, it makes absolute sense to include sustainability features because these result in warmer, drier, healthier homes that are more fun to live in. Who wouldn’t want that? Rather than designing to code, we always aim well above that in terms of insulation, ventilation, solar heating and so on. It’s not just us being ‘eco-conscious’. Many of our clients want to go down this route because it makes so much sense. While above code projects may cost more upfront, the benefits are ongoing in terms of delivering power savings and a comfortable way of life. From a

re-sale perspective, homes designed for sustainability will also remain more attractive in the long-term and continue to hold their value. What is Allfrey + South’s approach to sustainability? It is part of our baseline commitment to our clients and, by setting the bar high, we hope we can help inspire others to follow our lead. Fundamental elements of sustainable architecture include orientation that appropriately considers sun, shade and wind; and having high standards of insulation (including the slab) and ventilation. By ventilation, I don’t necessarily mean mechanical ventilation; good natural ventilation can be achieved through effective window design that promotes air flow and air quality. Recycled materials can come into the sustainability equation too, though often we find it is the heritage value of such materials that are particularly valued. Fundamentally, we are guided by respect for our clients and will always work to achieve their lifestyle goals. How far we can go down the sustainability road is largely dependent on the conversations we have with them. It is a real pleasure to work with clients who are passionate about sustainability and want to share their journey towards a better way of life with us. www.allso.co.nz

2 3 4 Get composting! 5 By Clementine Page

With the spotlight shining brighter on sustainability and climate change now more than ever, there’s never been a better time to give love to your garden. Nourish your plants/ vegetables and recycle your food scraps at the same time with compost! Here’s a guide to get you started.

6

First things first: a good structure to contain your compost heap. Compost bins are the go-to, but if you’re feeling creative then build your own – just make sure it has a cover. Choose a sunny, sheltered position for your compost system and ensure it is easily accessible. Next you’ll need a layer (no more than 10cm deep) of carbon-rich brown matter; we’re talking straw, twigs and small branches, dry leaves and cardboard. Add alternate thin layers of brown matter and green matter – grass clippings, vege scraps, manure and coffee grounds. Haven’t got the energy for layering? Just make sure there is a good mix of green and brown material. Add a little water with each layer to keep it moist, and mix with every few additions. The content of your compost bin should have the consistency of a damp sponge. Turn your compost every two to three weeks in order to facilitate aeration and faster decomposition. A well-maintained compost can be ready in six to eight weeks. Mature compost should smell earthy and be dark and crumbly. You shouldn’t be able to recognise any of the original components.

The majority of their jewellery is comprised of recycled components, including New Zealand coins, vintage timepieces, military buttons… even old bullet casings are given a new and better life! Their designs are unique and eye-catching, and best of all, their components are ethically sourced. Additionally, the creative duo can custom-make jewellery for you, for instance

Alternatively, you can browse several styles on their website www.rainey-designs. com or buy from a number of retailers throughout New Zealand and Australia. Their jewellery can be found at design stores, galleries and boutique shops. Major Christchurch stockists include HAPA in the BNZ central city complex, Industria at The Colombo; and Selma’s glass work, exclusively at the

ith 10 years’ experience in pool building and maintenance under his belt, he began Mighty Staggz Pools, a family run business based in Oxford, focused on using the best of Canterbury products. The company creates new swimming pools, refurbishes tired existing pools and has just added an exciting range of cedar products to the thriving business. The cedar products are all custom-designed and made to

fit your needs and your space. Shipped all over New Zealand, there are shade products, pergolas, and the unique and luxurious indoor cedar bath tubs. “Our indoor bath tubs are something quite special,” Quentin says. “They really add ambience, a rustic and eco style to your bathroom.” Might Staggz offers a range of shapes and sizes in new fibreglass predesigned and custom swimming pools, plus lagoons in any shape, and spa

pools, as well as all the pumps, filters and accessories you need. Refurbishing an old swimming pool is a joy for Mighty Staggz, if it’s become a bit of a headache in the backyard. They reline a derelict concrete or liner pool with fibreglass and suddenly the pool is an asset and a source of pleasure for its owner. The team has developed a unique process of spraying fibreglass on site. For the qualified and experienced team of four, integrity and honesty form the heart and soul of the business. They’re big on problem solving, and they work to your needs and your space. Importantly, they love creating areas where families have fun, and pools that people can enjoy for a lifetime. Kitchens of Distinction

It really doesn’t take much to transform a tired, dated and crammed kitchen into something that’s airy, fresh, ultra-sophisticated and entirely functional for family life. All it requires is to get expert advice from the right people and you’re well on your way.

D

ream Doors Kitchens Christchurch is the right team. Managing Director Adrian Kay is proud of his record of delivering bespoke kitchens that more than meet the needs and lifestyles of his clients. Dream Doors Kitchens offers both kitchen facelifts as well

as completely new kitchens, and Adrian says their point of difference is they offer an unbiased opinion on what exactly needs to be done, factoring in space and budget requirements. In addition to this, they can also help with laundries, bathroom vanities, office/study

and garage storage solutions. Dream Doors Kitchens had an exhibitor’s stand at the recent Canterbury Home Show and says it was a fantastic weekend culminating in a lot of names registered on the waiting list for either a facelift kitchen or new kitchen.

“There’s limited space left heading into the Christmas period, but if people book a consultation now, we should be able to have a beautiful kitchen installed in their home by Christmas.” Installation typically takes two days, and Adrian ensures he and his team make the process as seamless and stress-free as possible for clients; it’s the kind of professionalism you want when seeking to achieve your dream kitchen. Chalk it up By Jess Murray

If you thought that the last time you would encounter the word ‘chalk’ would be in primary school, then you may have to think again. Originally created by the paint brand Annie Sloan, chalk paint is a fun new way to give your house a vintage feel or try something entirely new. The paint is used to give furniture and home décor a matte look and is very easy to apply.

O

ne of the many perks to using chalk paint is that it doesn’t require any prep; you can simply apply it to most surfaces (even ones that have already been painted) as long

1

Something old: If your old dresser or wardrobe is looking exactly that… old, then it may be time to give that old girl a new coat of paint. Annie Sloan has 42 shades available on their Chalk Paint Colour Card, each with their own inspiration or story. So, while you’re telling your neighbour about your freshly painted Antoinette cupboard you can also tell them the colour is inspired by the decorative pieces and interiors of 18th century France.

as it is clean and dry. So, whether you’re revitalising, restyling or refurbishing, here’s a few tips to ensure that your house is the chalk of the town!

2

Something new: This tip isn’t for the faint of heart. It requires a fight against the greys and neutral colours of contemporary stairs. Adding a little bit of colour, even if it’s a subtle pastel or darker colours, onto your stairs at home can really open up the space and provide an interesting talking point for guests.

3

Something borrowed: The inherited furniture from grandma might have looked good in her house but it may not fit in with your contemporary furniture. While some may think it’s a sin to paint over granny’s beloved old dining room table and repurpose it into a desk, using Annie Sloan’s Athenian Black shade could be a great way to pay homage to your childhood memories.

C.

4

Something blue… navy: Annie Sloan has just recently launched two new shades of easy-to-use chalk paint: Oxford Navy and Athenian Black. If you really like the matte look of the chalk paint, you can move your brush from furniture to wall. Oxford Navy is the perfect colour to do so. It’s a traditional navy blue that takes inspiration from Annie’s home city – Oxford.

Soak your worries away Hot tub therapy is ancient, used for centuries to relax muscles, relieve stress and experience the renewal effect of immersing yourself in warm water. Canterbury’s own Degree43 brings the future of hot tubbing to you with its stylish, environmentally friendly, and bach-tobush innovation, beautifully finished in stainless steel and cedar.

T

his local, top-end and forward-thinking hot tub design is also surprisingly affordable. Whether socialising in your backyard or spacegazing in the back of beyond, your quality of life index just took a giant leap forward. Hands-on Directors Marty Long and Dwayne Dunn came up with the clever design that uses around 400 litres less water than traditional hot tubs, making the hot tubs easy to heat and energy efficient. The high quality

304 moulded stainless-steel means hygiene – no opportunity for bacterial nasties to make themselves at home as in a wooden or plastic hot tub. Even better, the hot tubs use completely fresh water. There is no purchase and use of harsh chemicals, simply recycle the water onto the garden (or forest floor) every few days, or add the UV kit which keeps the water sparkling clean. Choose from two heating options: a heat pump from

Christchurch’s Warmth New Zealand that uses the same technology as underfloor heating, costing just $3.20 to heat from cold, and genuinely less than $1 per day to maintain heat; or the take-it-anywhere, state of the art, in-tub wood fired heating. Just a small wheelbarrow load of wood heats 1600 litres of water in less than two hours. The tubs are available in three sizes or custom-made, and the 20-year warranty with minimal maintenance required

makes the hot tubs a no-brainer in value for money. Degree43 is 100 percent Canterbury owned and operated, and all the materials used in the hot tubs are locally sourced and fabricated. The hot tubs come with a fully insulated lockable cover from The Cover Guy in Auckland, which has a three-year warranty. Meeting at age 16 on their first trade course, Marty and Dwayne together founded Degree43 tubs, working in fine and technical stainless-steel fabrication with a focus on innovation. The hot tubs are their first step into the leisure market, and having worked so hard to perfect the product, the Degree43 strapline ‘relax, you deserve it’ could apply to them. “We love the hot tubs; they’ve become a real passion project for us and we are proud to offer the 20-year warranty for the stainless steel – you won’t find longer,” says Marty. Degree43 will deliver wherever, and are very happy to discuss finance options. As well as selling directly, you’ll find Marty and Dwayne and the hot tubs at agricultural and trade shows around the country. “It’s so rewarding to use our skill base to provide a product this good, that brings therapeutic relaxation to hard working people,” Dwayne says.

tarting out as a small picture framing business in 1989, founder David Trerise had a goal to apply museum standards in his workshop. Moving away from out-dated gluing and trimming techniques, he researched conservation framing practices, and introduced materials and processes designed to protect artworks from environmental hazards and inappropriate framing processes. “A lot of our work is preserving artworks that are valued for purely sentimental reasons,” David says. “It still deserves to be treated with the care and respect the artist intended, or the owner desires, so it can be enjoyed by future generations.” City Art Depot makes its own frames on the premises from rough-sawn timber to provide a frame made and handfinished to best suit the needs of the artwork and the client. This commitment to quality has seen the business grow, attracting a client base that includes museums, galleries, institutions, businesses and private art owners and collectors. The business offers practical solutions for the framing, installation, transportation and storage of artworks. Its archival Solander boxes provide an elegant and robust storage system for photographs, rare books, objects and original works of art. City Art Depot also has a wellrespected gallery. “The gallery is very important for us. There’s a renewed energy around art in the city and it allows us to introduce people to the work of emerging, as well as established, artists.” www.cityart.co.nz

AUDI Q3’S MAK The new Audi Q3 has been a long time coming. With the first gen debuting in 2011, it was a big success for the Ingolstadt company, with loyal customers lapping it up en masse. So, after eight years, one of Audi’s most popular models has finally received a makeover, but is this automotive nip and tuck more than skin deep?

1. WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

The range kicks off with the 35 TFSI Advanced for $60,900 before moving up to the 45 TFSI Advanced and 45 TFSI S Line for $74,900 and $84,900 respectively. With the hot SQ3 and spicier RSQ3 well on the way, you certainly won’t be spoilt for choice.

2. UNDER THE BONNET

Our test car was the entry level 35 TFSI. This means a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 110kW and 250Nm of torque. Throw in a six speed S-Tronic gearbox and you sip away the fuel at a mere 6.0-litres per 100km.

Audi really knows how to produce a refined and sublime interior. Every button and toggle switch are just better defined and put together than many of their competitors. Our test car came with the Technology and Comfort Package which contains Audi’s slick Virtual Cockpit, Adaptive Cruise Control, 360 Degree Rear View Camera and a host of other goodies. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto also makes an appearance. Boot space has been increased, allowing you to lug 530L of whatever around easily.

5. ON THE ROAD Getting up to speed, it becomes obvious the 1.5 litre turbo is no rocket ship, but it does work beautifully with the dual clutch auto box, allowing you to make brisk and efficient progress. Audi Drive Select is on hand with multiple drive modes which can be tailored to suit your mood. The steering is direct but feedback was somewhat lacking. On the flipside, Audi has really nailed drowning out the outside world when you are on the move. The noise deadening is nigh on perfect, leaving you cocooned in chapel-like quiet as you drive along. Ride comfort also deserves a mention; Audi has really wowed us in recent years with some comfortable rides and the Q3 is up there with the best.

3. OUTSIDE

We love how Audi’s clean-cut design philosophy is transcending throughout the whole range and the Q3 is no exception. It’s 97mm longer than before and 25mm wider, it also sits 5mm lower, making for a hunkered-down stance. All in all, there is no sign of automotive middle age spread here.

NOW $119,995

6. VERDICT

Despite the odd niggle, the Q3 has moved forward in leaps and bounds over its predecessor. With willing engines, clean-cut styling, and the unequalled levels of refinement, it has certainly been worth waiting for this member of Audi’s ever-growing Q family.

HIGHER THAN THE REST By Ben Selby

With the new Mazda6 Takami, which in Japanese translates roughly as ‘Higher than the Rest’, it really is a case of the best made better. Available as saloon for $56,995 and now a wagon at $58,695, the Mazda6 Takami is the company’s flagship, and a very handsome one at that. From the outside, the flagship Takami is easily the best looking 6 in the range, especially with those tasty 19-inch alloys.

I

nside, it’s difficult not to notice Mazda’s intentions to move the brand upmarket. Fully loaded with all the fruit, buyers get Mazda’s slick MZD Connect Infotainment System, heated and ventilated leather seats and steering wheel, 360° reversing camera, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and rear cross traffic alert to name a few. Head and legroom, both front and rear, are also very generous. Under the bonnet, the Takami makes use of the CX9’s peachy 2.5-litre turbo four pot petrol engine. This means 170kW/420Nm are at your disposal via a six-speed automatic transmission. While this does make the Takami brisk off the mark, it has the ability to cruise all day at the legal limit with an amazing level of comfort and refinement. Despite being a lengthy 4865mm, the Takami is very live and supple in the twisty stuff. Mazda’s knack of making an entertaining drive is clearly evident here. All in all, the new levels of refinement, oodles of toys and brilliant driveability and chassis dynamics make for a stunning package. Basically, the Mazda 6 Takami is the new segment yardstick.

‘Muscle car’ may not be something you would expect to hear in a review of a Mercedes Benz, but that was the first thing that sprung to mind while testing the Mercedes C63 S Estate.

T

he C63 model range is a bestseller, with the Estate teamed with a Saloon, a Coupé and a Cabriolet. The Estate, which I got to turn my hand to trialling, is packed to the gunwales with power from an 8-cylinder 3982cc 375kW machine featuring 700Nm of torque and wheel drive. It’s a drift lover’s dream, but on the other hand, it could also be the ultimate family car. The 19-inch cross spoke forged wheel rims and the LCD accent lighting on the interior are welcome touches, while the AMG performance

exhaust mode makes the sound of those 8 cylinders just roar. That’s if you can hear it over the Burmester surround sound with 13 speakers. There’s also a nappa leather AMG seat add-on package available – good leather seating is something I’ve come to really appreciate when trying out a new vehicle. The base price before ORC comes in at $170,800; with the seating package thrown in, it’s still only $174,500, so why not go all out? The Mercedes C63 S Estate is the whole package – power with good looks to boot.
