he richness and diversity of cultural offerings in this region never cease to amaze me. On any given night there are numerous choices from music of all genres to movies (old and new), live theatre, ballet, exhibitions, and practical workshops if I’m that way inclined. Arts and culture play a vital role in the wellbeing of society, and there has been increasing evidence of the many benefits of cultural participation in areas such as health and education, and of its value to social cohesion and community resilience. in the central city, without having to purchase anything. In this first iteration of the project, Cantabrians are invited to connect with change organisations, community groups, innovators, entrepreneurs, and creatives alike. “The past couple of years have wrought big changes to the ways we work and connect with each other. This project brings a range of people together, tests ways of sharing space, and hopes to support a flourishing, wellbeing-focused economy,” says programme director of The Green Lab, Khye Hitchcock. The multi-function space is fitted out with creative furniture that supports connection and collaboration (including a ‘Green Connection Pod’), and of course, plenty of plants delivering all the wellbeing benefits that come from being surrounded by them. During the day and some evenings for the next six weeks, The Green Lab will also host events, conversations, and opportunities to join community groups, innovators and organisations as they share what they love to do. Understorey is a pilot project; The Green Lab’s dream is to find a permanent home supported by a sustainable business model. The pilot is supported by the COVID Lotteries Response, Christchurch City Council, and The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora.

What comes next? Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel is not seeking re-election in October 2022. She talks to Lynda Papesch about life, love and loss.

F

or more than three decades since first elected to public office, outgoing Ōtautahi Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel has constantly been in the political and public spotlights. The last 10 years have seen her at the 8 19 August, 2021 Metropol

forefront while the city has battled floods, fires, earthquakes and terrorism, leading the charge to resurrect, reshape and reconnect communities, infrastructure and civic pride. Now after three terms as mayor, it’s time for a change, she says.

“The reality is the one person that I need by my side, my husband Rob who died last year, has gone.” Where her new journey will lead she doesn’t know, but will always be proud of what has been achieved during her time

as mayor, especially the relationships that she has helped build with mana whenua. “We have connected with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and developed relationships with the six Papatipu Rūnanga: Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga, Te Rūnanga o Wairewa, Te Rūnanga o Koukourārata, Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, Ōnuku Rūnanga, and Taumutu Rūnanga.” Strong ongoing relationships are vital to Christchurch’s future, she believes. “The foundations are there, but we have further to go. Experience has shown me that true partnership is the only way to achieve the best results. “This is never more important than now as we face a massive reform programme – three waters reform, Resource Management Act reform, National Policy Statement – Urban Development, the Future for Local Government Review (to name a few). At the same time, we are taking on the challenges of an uncertain future, including the impacts of climate change and advances in technology.” Another challenge, Lianne believes, is that people are not as inclusive of diversity as most of them want to be; an issue her successor will need to continue working on.

This brings Lianne to the subject of her replacement. “The role of mayor is one few people truly understand,” she explains. “People see the ‘politics’ of the council table played out in the media. Trying to manage that environment, however, is only one part of the role. There is also a civic leadership role, representing and speaking for the city. That’s the real privilege. Whoever is elected mayor will have Lianne’s ongoing backing. “I’ll always be at the end of the phone if needed,” she says. Lianne is quick to point out that general politics is not on her agenda, nor is she retiring. “I’m a qualified lawyer and I wouldn’t mind finding something that could use my legal brain. “I love Christchurch and representing the city where I was born and have lived all my life has been an absolute privilege.”

Experience has shown me that true collaboration is the only way to achieve the best results. This is never more important than now as we face a massive reform programme...

Multi-use arena After a hard-fought battle, Christchurch’s new state-of-the-art multi-use arena will proceed with a seating capacity of 30,000. Metropol talks to Councillor James Gough (pictured far right), who was instrumental in the decision last week to increase the seating capacity.

Why the chopping and changing about the seating capacity? The plan to reduce the Canterbury MultiUse Arena’s capacity down to 25,000 seats existed for all of about a fortnight. The Central City Recovery Plan - dubbed the Blueprint - designated the current site for the facility between Madras, Barbadoes, Hereford and Tuam streets. It identified it as a closed-roof arena with a seating capacity of 35,000 back in 2012. Following approval of the business case and refining of the budget, a compromise was struck to reduce its seating capacity to 30,000. The reduction wasn’t ideal but it was reluctantly accepted. In the wake of Covid, the arena project faced significant cost escalation and council staff proposed that its seating capacity be cut from 30,000 to 25,000. This was passed by council [Christchurch City Council] however I, along with four other councillors (Sam MacDonald, Catherine Chu, Aaron Keown and Phil Mauger), was strongly

What sort of events will the venue cater for? The facility will be a true multi-purpose arena in the heart of the central city, rectangular in size and with a covered roof. It will be ideal for sports such as rugby and soccer and other major events like concerts, expos and e-sports. It is worth noting too that although it will have a seating capacity for sports of 30,000, it will have a concert capacity of around 41,000. It will have an unparalleled customer experience and will be, without question, the premier stadium/arena in the country. Are there plans/ space for future expansion if needed? No, preferably not! Given the structure’s footprint and closed roof, it is so important to recognise that we have only one chance to do this – we build it once and build it properly. What is the timeline? Preliminary design for the now 30,000 seat arena is about to begin, and we will look to sign the Design and Construct contract early next year, with construction beginning shortly thereafter. It is expected to open at the end of 2024.

opposed to this. We received a tremendous amount of public support, which included a petition signed by over 24,000 people, who also felt strongly that the council needed to stick with the programme and build it with 30,000 seats like it had agreed to. Our persistence paid off when Sam MacDonald and I brought a Notice of Motion to the council two weeks later for the previous decision to essentially be rescinded and for the project’s budget to be amended instead so we could build it with a 30,000-seating capacity as planned. It was an epic turnaround for the ages and very satisfying for our Notice of Motion to pass with only two councillors opposing it (Yani Johanson and Sara Templeton). It was the right decision and a real win for Christchurch. It was about cementing our city’s competitive advantage with this facility; it was about doing what you say you’re going to do; and it was about futureproofing a tremendously important legacy asset for our city and wider Canterbury region.

Magical, elegant pieces Formerly a top New Zealand fashion designer, Takaaki Sakaguchi now creates in clay instead of cloth. He explains why to Lynda Papesch.

12 19 August, 2021 Metropol

O

lder generations may well remember the Sakaguchi fashion label and its talented designer. Some may even wonder what happened to him. Ponder no more; Takaaki Sakaguchi is back creating, only now his hands have turned to fashioning more solid objects d’art. Born in Osaka, Japan, Sakaguchi always felt drawn to the arts, and especially fashion, at an early age, working his way up the fashion industry

ladder initially in his home country. A move to Auckland created the opportunity to start his own fashion label, Sakaguchi, with outlets throughout New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. As his brand grew in reputation so too did his workload, with shows at New Zealand Fashion Week, judging at the World of Wearable Art Show, and, of course, designing his collections. “By 2015, it was time to have a break from all of the pressure of the fashion business; I decided to close the manufacturing side and just concentrate on design, freeing up time for other pursuits,” he recalls. “I wanted a more relaxed lifestyle, but wanted my creativity to continue.” A few special clients still wear Sakaguchi fashion designs, created just for them, however now ceramics is his overriding love. Although he’s lived in Christchurch since 1998, it wasn’t until February 2017 that Sakaguchi joined the Canterbury Potters’ Association, developing a passion for ceramics which now rivals his previous fashion interests. The recipient of numerous awards for his ceramics, he exhibits regularly. His work, he feels, is largely influenced by his Japanese sensibility, although not always in ways he is overly conscious of. At heart he’s a reductionist. “I have a love of the randomness and fluidity of nature, a love of texture, and a love of the colours of the earth. All of these are reflected in my work. What the future holds he has no idea. “That’s the exciting part as my ideas change over time. It’s so nice to have the freedom to just let that happen.”

Takaaki Sakaguchi

I have a love of the randomness and fluidity of nature, a love of texture, and a love of the colours of the earth.

Be brave enough and confident enough to try, and trust that you will be able to ask and learn along the way

aelene has gone from strength to strength in her career. Before joining Sport NZ, she worked in Australia as Chief Executive of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and then Chief Executive of Rugby Australia, and before that, Chief Executive of Netball New Zealand. As the first woman to take on some of these powerful roles, it is no doubt Raelene holds great influence. For young women with big aspirations, the prospect of achieving these high-level roles may seem impossible, and the historical lack of women leaders only fuels that. Raelene believes that for change to happen, there has to be female role models out there doing it. “You can’t be it if you can’t see it. Having role models such as the Jacinda Arderns, the Sophie Pascoes, the Women’s 7s team, those are the women little girls see as heroes.” For women wanting to climb the ladder into higher-up roles, Raelene says, “you can’t get the job you don’t apply for. Be brave enough and confident enough to try, and trust that you will be able to ask and learn along the way.” And in times of self-doubt? Her perspective is simple. “Don’t be afraid to employ someone better than you, smarter than you. There are lots of things I’m not great at, but I can employ an expert who is better than me. I can trust and support them and help them. You have to trust yourself that you can lead them.” When asked which women she finds influential, Sophie Pascoe, Billie Jean King, Oprah Winfrey are all on the list. But more than that, are the women she meets every day. “You don’t have to be famous to be influential, I meet women every day who I find influential. Women who volunteer at the local rugby club every single week make such a difference in their communities. That’s influential to me.” A final thought; not all advice is good advice, Raelene believes, but something that has stuck is, “Be authentic and genuine, but don’t be so close that you can’t kick their butts.”

Karen’s attitude enables her to deliver proven results time after time.

one on one

When you think of your experience in real estate, what has been a stand-out moment? I have three stand-out highlights:

What’s one of the best things about the industry? It’s life-changing and most of that is to do with the people you meet on the journey and lifetime friends you make. I’ve also benefitted from a strong emphasis on personal wellbeing, growth, and development.

After 27 years in the industry, what is your number one piece of advice for success as an agent? You’re right, 27 years gives you a lot of time to formulate some guiding principles and I think these go deeper than advice. Everyone is going to offer advice based on their own experience and not all of it is helpful. I have had terrible advice given to me at times, especially early on in my career, so I’ve tried instead to stay true to my values. Expect to work hard (leave now if you can’t), surround yourself with good people, those that lift your spirits and your game, protect your integrity - once lost, like trust, it’s very difficult to reclaim, and treat people with genuine care and kindness.

Motivation has never been hard for me, I’m genuinely optimistic with a glass overflowing mindset.

Thinking back to when you first started, how did you stay motivated through the challenges that come with the industry? Motivation has never been hard for me, I’m genuinely optimistic with a glass overflowing mindset. Historically, the earthquakes were very tough, covid-19 and lockdown were especially difficult for me due to the level of uncertainty, but our mentor Gilbert Enoka reminds us in stressful times, “that this too shall pass,” and it has. My other secret weapon has been my family and partner of 45 years, Johnny. When did you first get on the property ladder? We were early home buyers and I had my 21st in our first home in Bishopdale. It was 1983 and it cost $57,000. A little bit has changed for me since then! How do you relax? A big bath every day, I find showers too business-like! Reading, thinking, walking, and laughing with and without mates.

Achieving an amicable separation Popular culture has influenced how we perceive the legal process surrounding separation and divorce. or any sense of disempowerment for either party. Inflamed relations can all too often result in lengthy Family Court and litigation-based negotiations between parties,” says Gillian. Selina-Jane says the Collaborative Process aims to allow a separating couple to resolve issues in a respectful, calm way. “This takes into account a greater understanding of the psychological effects of separation and what this means when it comes to making important decisions,” she says. It’s also a case of “do as I do, not just as I say” with Gillian and Selina-Jane acting respectfully and cooperatively, in the same way that they ask of their clients. The two women sometimes bring in other professionals who are also trained in the Collaborative Process such as financial or mental health professionals or divorce coaches who can contribute added depth of expertise. The work of reaching resolution is done through a series of meetings and the clients are often involved in the drafting

of their agreement alongside their Collaborative lawyers. “A lot of clients are surprised at the first meeting by how informal and respectful things are – nothing like what they have seen on episodes of Suits. Separation can be a win-win. Our role is to help create solutions that meet the needs of all involved,” says Gillian. It’s not all sunshine though. Each party’s lawyer is there to provide sound legal advice so that their clients can make fully informed decisions, and to advocate for what is important to them. “I have had Collaborative Process cases where the couple could not come up to the first meeting in the same elevator but have left the process, not only in the same elevator, but going for a coffee afterwards,” says Selina.

The root of a toothy problem Has your pet fractured a tooth?

nimals will continue to eat even when they are in pain, so it is important not to just ignore it or wait until your pet stops chewing on that side of the mouth. That’s the advice from pet dentistry expert Janine van Dam, BVSc MANZCVS, who operates from Ourvets St Albans. “Once the enamel is fractured and the dentine is exposed, bacteria will gain access to the pulp cavity. Over time this will cause the death of the tooth and a tooth root abscess to develop,” she says. “The animal will need general anaesthetic for a proper examination. The fractured tooth should be X-rayed, then either extracted or undergo a root canal procedure. This procedure can be performed on any tooth in the mouth, and time is no issue. It can be done on a recently fractured tooth or on one that was fractured years ago.”

Janine says the canine teeth are the largest teeth in the mouth. While only a small part of the tooth is visible, there is a large root which attaches it securely to the surrounding bone by strong periodontal ligaments. “Canine teeth hold the tongue and lips in place, provide structure to the jaw and are used in eating, holding and playing. It is a good idea to keep these teeth in the mouth particularly in a young animal. “A follow up X-ray is required 12 months after the operation to ensure no complications have occurred, and after that time the risk of a problem is very low.” The success rate for the root canal procedure is high varying from 70 to 90 percent. As there is a restoration on the tooth, chewing on hard substances such as rocks, antlers or sticks can damage the restoration and should be discouraged, she adds. www.ourvetsstalbans.co.nz

fashion, health & beauty A sustainable step forward Want to feel good about looking good? Hair Art & Beauty has officially partnered with Sustainable Salons NZ so now you can.

A

s part of the Sustainable Salons family, over 95 percent of waste generated in the salon is now recycled, and any proceeds go directly to initiatives that help strengthen our communities. All plastic waste is converted into plastic beads and given a new life, remade into furniture, packaging, and even glasses frames. So far, Sustainable Salons has prevented nearly 90,000kg of plastic waste from ending up in a landfill. A big area of waste in the salon

industry is metals, from hairspray cans and colour tubes to aluminium foil, a lot of which cannot be processed through our standard recycling system. These are now sent to specialty recycling facilities, and the proceeds from these recycled resources are donated to KiwiHarvest, an organisation that redistributes excess food to those in need. Every four full heads of foils done at Hair Art & Beauty provides a meal for someone in need. Even our hair clippings and chemical waste are recycled. Hair is converted into

booms to help clean up oil spills; human hair can hold over eight times its weight in oil, making it super effective for this purpose. To prevent our chemical waste from ending up in waterways, it is sent to a processing facility where it is converted into CO2 and water, which is then used in construction and roadworks. We are so excited to be continuing our journey of sustainability and social responsibility. To learn more, contact the team at info@hairart.co.nz.

ichelle Marsh, (pictured) a salon owner and operator for 23 years, is living that dream, for a second time. Formerly located at 60 Victoria Street, her salon Surreal reopened on July 6 at 66 Victoria Street. “It feels like a homecoming. As soon as I arrived here, I had that feeling of excitement again - all the things I had missed working in a proper salon.” The 2011 earthquakes required the salon to move to a renovated-for-purpose villa in Westminster Street. Clients loved it, but Michelle and the team found it a limiting workspace. The new salon, designed by Krush Architecture Ltd, exudes calm and serenity, something Michelle was focused on from the beginning. “People’s lives are so busy now; it’s nice to have an oasis - a place to enjoy time out.” Sustainability and supporting local are fully embraced here, with all waste disposed of responsibly and all beverages locally sourced. “We are proud to be a member of Sustainable Salons,” Michelle says. Another major point of difference is the salon now has a liquor licence. “To offer that extra touch of pampering to clients is paramount. Bring on the cocktails.” Michelle never forgets that without her clients none of this would have been possible, “Their loyalty and support never wavers.” The same goes for her 15 work colleagues. “They are exceptional. The salon has a loyal, stable workforce and an amazing environment.”

A firm believer in apprenticeships, the salon is an industry leader, offering flexible working conditions, excellent remuneration, and a super-fun but professional environment; great incentives for any hairdresser looking for a fantastic place to work. For sustainably beautiful hair, visit Surreal on Victoria Street. www.surrealhairandbeauty.co.nz

Concussions affecting brain health What value do you put on your brain? Concussion recovery and brain health are two conditions that go hand-in-hand.

F

or almost 20 years, most people who have walked through the doors of the Gill Redden CranioSacral therapy clinic for help with a concussion or concussion-related symptoms had jammed cranial bones. Gill successfully treats people with concussion symptoms and those who want to look after their brains. She takes a long-term view

on a healthy brain going into old age. Gill believes people who are symptom-free after a concussion still have some of their skull bones jammed. This means that the blood or nerve supply can be compromised. The membranes that are surrounding and protecting the brain can suffer the trauma also, and they may twist or kink.

When things aren’t moving well in either the skull, sacrum or spinal canal or the membranes, it means that the spinal fluid can’t do a good job of nourishing and detoxifying the brain. Jammed bones can also have an impact on the lobes of the brain nearby, and can affect the way a person thinks or behaves. Over the years, incremental starving of the brain can mean trouble, especially later in life. The brain produces a lot of waste that needs clearing away seamlessly. If waste is not being removed this can be a problem over the following years. Statistics identify about 80

percent of concussions are not related to sports injuries. These may be the result of traffic accidents, work-related or home injuries, falls, general activity, or violent acts. It is imperative to have good brain health so every individual can realise their own abilities and optimise their cognitive, emotional, psychological and behavioural functions to cope with life situations. So include having a CranioSacral treatment with Gill Redden as part of your total wellbeing. Make brain health your priority; you only have one brain. www.gillreddencranio.co.nz

eckenham Beauty and Medi Spa provides two appearance treatments that do precisely that. Nano needling is a noninvasive way to deliver hydration, nutrients and vitamins into the topmost layer of the epidermis. This provides an absorption rate of 97 percent, which then triggers a self-rejuvenation process. Unlike micro needling, nano needling only penetrates the skin to a 0.25mm depth and is designed to exfoliate the skin and stimulate cell turnover, rather than to penetrate deep into the dermis. Laser hair removal is another in-house treatment that utilises the Diode laser,

the golden standard for hair removal. Diode lasers deliver high frequency, low fluence pulses and can be safely used on all six skin types. Premium skincare brands Image and emerginC (the latter incorporating clinicallyproven cosmeceutical and medical-grade ingredients with a sustainability focus) are available for purchase, enabling clientele to continue their “skin for spring” regime at home. Finding the right agent for you

“How will I know what agent will work best for me?” “Does the commission really impact the sale price?” “Does the method of sale really matter?”

T

hese are common questions often asked by clients of Ray White Rangiora. Currently real estate seems to be on everybody’s lips and it can be overwhelming to know where to start. The first step when selling is to find the agent who will work best for you. Trust should be your biggest decider. Your agent needs to be a good listener, strong communicator, and professional negotiator. Do your research, attend their open homes, speak with their past clients, or email a question through one of their properties and monitor their response time. Commission can be a big

worry for potential sellers. It goes without saying, you get what you pay for. The first offer is not always the best and having a skilled agent in the negotiation room will ultimately ensure a premium outcome. When deciding on your agent, keep in mind it is not about the fees, but the money in your bank account at the end of the transaction. All methods of sale have their pros and cons. Your agent should be able to confidently recommend the best sale method based on the current market conditions and provide evidence to support their reasoning. The professionalism of your agent is the key.

Naughty & nice W

Incorporating vegetables into baking and desserts can bring delicious flavours and textures into sweet treats. Pumpkin

Already a sweet vegetable, pumpkin is delicious when used in baking and desserts. Pumpkin loaf, muffins, cake, or not so common in New Zealand, the classic American pumpkin pie. Usually always accompanied with nice spices including cinnamon and nutmeg, a pumpkin dessert makes for a lovely wintery treat.

Avocado

Loved for savoury brunches, avocado is more versatile than you may think. While technically a fruit, we had to include avocado as a must-try for desserts. The flavour turns out to be quite subtle when used with other stronger flavours such as cocoa. For a beautifully smooth mousse or pudding, try using avocado, you will be amazed at the result.

e all know and love a good carrot cake, yet there is a range of other veggies that work well in baking and desserts. Carrots, beetroot, courgette, and pumpkin all add nice textures, flavours and work to keep baked goods from turning out dry. As well as this, they of course bump up the fibre and nutrients which is always a win. Here are a few suggestions about what to whip up with your veggies next time you feel like making something sweet.

Beetroot

Another subtle flavour is beetroot, which when used in baking gives an almost nutty taste, and when paired with chocolate is beautiful and rich. It will also lend moisture to baking and stop any dryness. Try beetroot in chocolate cakes, muffins or mousse for pure indulgence. It can provide a stunning ruby red colour too if you let it be the hero ingredient.

F

Setting the standard We need food for our very existence. We also need that food to be safe for consumption. Food safety does not happen spontaneously. It is highly regulated and there are organisations in our community dedicated to this task.

undamental to the safety programme are food control plans (FCP) under the Food Act (2014). Every business registered within a local body area must have a food control plan which sets out what steps food businesses must take to make their product safe. What good is a plan though if it is not implemented? Local councils can choose independent organisations to “verify” if food plans are being adhered to. This is Food & Health Standards’ main work. They are the preferred contractor to eleven councils across the South Island because of their exceptional history and because they have the critical mass of trained staff (verifiers) needed to carry out the work. And there is lots of it – over 1200 verifications every year for the councils. That is hardly surprising when you consider the range of businesses involved in the food industry. Thanks to Food & Health Standards, the public can be assured that the food they are buying is safe to eat. Food operators also know their business is meeting its food safety and suitability requirements and that boosts their confidence in their business as well. www.foodandhealth.co.nz

No fun without rum Metropol writer Nicholas Henare samples a few of the top drops on offer at Big Daddy’s Liquor this month.

Appleton 30Yrs This exceptional rum from Jamaica is one of the finest bottles of rum available. A beautiful and complex blend created by Joy Spence. Think vibrant vanilla, toasted oak, ginger, and warm cinnamon with a smooth and long spiced honey finish. Pure gold.

700ml $699.99

Black Dog Triple Gold Reserve Named after Walter Samuel Millard’s favourite fishing fly in 1883, this blended whisky is smooth butterscotch and vanilla with overtones of caramel, honey and marzipan. A slight taste of pepper and citrus.

750ml $59.99

I

first met Joy Spence from Appleton Estate Rum distillery in Jamaica when Newstalk ZB called on me for my opinion about the Appleton 30-year-old. A vibrant woman with exceptional knowledge, she puts her heart and soul into this rum. My taste was from one of only 200 bottles, making it the rarest and most expensive beverage I have ever had. How did it taste? Like liquid gold, as if someone had wrapped me in a warm blanket. The finest rum, actually the finest spirit, that I’ve ever had. This month you get the opportunity to buy a bottle, or if rum is not to your taste, included to the right are some other great choices too.

Roku Gin Yet again another Japanese art of beverage refinement. Roku is “six” in Japanese and stands for the six botanicals used in this stunning gin. Citrus, toffee and juniper in a Martini or just the gin with Fever Tree tonic and a slice of lemon and you have a quality cocktail in hand.

700ml $54.99

Johnnie Walker XR 21Yrs This incredible whisky blend is taken from the notes of original blender Sir Alexander Walker II himself.

The nose is spiced apple, smoky oak with a citrus and oak palate. Smooth amber whisky for those special times.

700ml $189.99

Hibiki Suntory Harmony The Japanese are renowned for taking something and making it better. The Suntory whisky is another great success. A harmonious blend of whiskies, Hibiki is Japan’s most awarded, with a lychee, sandalwood nose and candied citrus palate.

Time for a spring fling WORDS BY LYNDA PAPESCH

Traditionally the days leading up to and the start of spring are a time to clean up and clean out, in other words a spring clean.

I

prefer to think of it as a ‘spring fling’. I fling open curtains to let the light in, fling out clothes unworn for at least two years, fling aside winter woollies, throws and dark colours, and add freshness and light. Sprucing up your home may be as simple as taking a few hours to wipe over and dust surfaces and add some fresh flowers or going the whole hog and setting aside a full day or weekend to tackle what needs to be done. Here are some suggestions:

Spring Cleaning Checklist Wash skirting boards, ceilings, window sills, doors, and walls. Vacuum and wash vents, including heat pump filters. Wash or dry clean curtains. Dust blinds. Wash windows - inside and out. Dust or wash overhead light fittings and replace burnt bulbs. Dust, vacuum or wash lamp shades. Wash and/or air bedding Wipe out cupboards & pantry Clean kitchen, bathrooms and laundry fittings, surfaces and appliances.

Mellow Yellow

While bright, electric yellows can inspire energy and passion, soft buttery shades and light zesty hues are closely related to feelings of happiness, optimism and confidence.

A

s with anything, variation and contrast are key. In this room, the brighter shades of yellow, such as Resene Chenin on the wall and cushions are balanced out with the softer shades in the room, such as Resene Mellow Yellow on the floor and Resene Half Spanish White on the cabinet. Accessories are a great way to incorporate the in-between colours within your tonal colour scheme – remember, they all need to have the same undertone to work together. In this lounge, vases in Resene Stinger, Resene Mellow Yellow and Resene Laser complement and match the colours brought in through the cushions. Soft grey on the couch

Background in Resene Black White, A4 drawdown paint swatches (clockwise from top left) Resene Chenin, Resene Stinger, Resene Gin Fizz, Resene Double Spanish White, Resene Mellow Yellow, Resene Golden Sand, Resene Laser and vase in Resene Mellow Yellow. Art from Etsy/Artolo, throw from Citta.

provides a breath of fresh air within the sunny yellow room. If you’re struggling to decide what colours should be incorporated into your tonal scheme, a piece of art is a great way to guide you. Pick out the feature hues and complementary shades and then match them with the corresponding Resene paints. Alternatively, if you’ve decided on your colour scheme, but can’t quite find the right artwork to finish it off, get out the paint brushes and make your own. To replicate the one in this lounge, try Resene Smooth Cream, Resene Outpost, Resene Castlepoint, Resene Cafe Royale and Resene Double Tea.

Fighting back against fast furniture

Modern living is “fast” – fast food, fast fashion, fast furniture. In a bid to keep up with the most recent home trends many people tend to opt for buying cheaper, lower quality products that inevitably end up in landfills a few years later.

Buy directly from the manufacturer. High quality sheepskin rugs, throws and accessories.

his approach is a complete anathema for third generation furniture makers and restorers Dave and son Daniel Morrison of D.J. Morrison Ltd. For them furniture is not a disposable commodity, but an investment for the future. They say that when you purchase bespoke furniture you are likely to have created a timeless and treasured heirloom for your family to be passed down through the generations. Father and son have had a long love affair with wood. They utilise native and recycled native timbers as well as imported timbers to design their one-off pieces. They do also use modern materials when clients request it. This level of skill and passion for furniture makes D. J. Morrison the ideal choice should you have a family piece that needs restoration. Dave and Daniel have had the honour of working on some beautiful old wooden pieces in their time – everything from chairs and bureaus to dining room tables and bedroom suites. It all just proves that longevity comes from initial quality investment, not from buying “fast”. www.furnituremakers.co.nz

His regulars are not just older generations; younger readers often pop in looking for specific authors and/or genres. “I struggle to keep up with demand for George Orwell, for instance. It’s refreshing to see the quality of young customers and what they’re reading.” Customers form his extended family; many returning

frequently to stock up, indulge in a quiet read, a chat, and the occasional cuppa. That’s another reason he’d like more space – to offer an even larger book selection and

maybe to create a few quiet writing pods. “I love to encourage writing as well as reading,” he adds. Visit Steadfast Books at 372 Ferry Road, Woolston.

Over-dyed Persian rugs have been hand-knotted in Iran many decades ago. Later, these vintage rugs have been shaved down to lower pile, deep washed and then re-dyed (over-dyed) one colour. Distressed Persian rugs are shaved down to lower pile, deep washed and then bleached out to make rugs faded and distressed on purpose. Persian rugs represent a trend that has achieved a crossover between fashion and home décor. This new look celebrates rugs that are faded and worn over time; rugs that nestle into homes as if they’ve always been there. That’s why interior designers and home decorators love these rugs. www.nilerugs.co.nz

Daryl & Tara Hewitt with Porscha & Wilson

Christchurch’s yin and yang builders

Metropol catches up with DJ Hewitt Builders’ principal Daryl Hewitt. What is your point of difference? It’s said that my strength is my fussiness. People are surprised about the little extras, such as the attention to detail, and things they weren’t expecting. We have built many homes over 26 years in business. You can’t teach experience. How did your story begin? I completed a Polytech block course apprenticeship in 1986 and was top apprentice three years in a row. After being a carpenter, I met

DJ Hewitt Showhome 2005

my wife and business partner Tara in Canada. We came back to New Zealand and renovated houses, and in 1999 built an award-winning Red Canadian style home in Brookhaven, which put us on the map. That was the last home when I was on the tools, after that I was in a management role. We built three show homes in Redcliffs and have loved the area. What nails the DJ Hewitt team? We are a big, loyal family of carpenters and subtrades, with

everyone working together and sharing the load. After our first year, we employed our qualified builder Kevin who is still with us. It’s a real team effort, with lots of loyal clients. Why are you such a great husband and wife team? We are the yin and yang. Tara keeps me grounded. She has always been passionate about interior design, especially when we renovated, and built, our own homes. Tara is always looking for new ideas and has a good eye for new trends. She is the glue that pulls the interior together. Quite often we’ll both think of an idea. I do the technical and Tara adds the flare. How do you spend your time off ? It’s important to constantly sharpen your saw, and do things that relax the brain. I go mountain biking, skiing, or we walk on the beach at sunrise with our dogs Porscha and Wilson. Photography has also become a passion.

Why have you committed to staying local? I’m Christchurch born and bred. I’ve also stayed local because I always want to check things with my own eyes, as I can see different things others can’t. Again, it’s about quality control to keep clients happy. What is the key to your success? I make sure each build not only looks good, but is cost effective, and lasts the test of time. I’m always thinking in advance, up to a year ahead. It’s so important to always give good service and support to everyone involved. A year ago, we celebrated 25 years in business by recognising our loyal suppliers and subcontractors, who in turn have kept us on their priority list. It’s all about the client’s happiness and trying to keep everyone informed. Communication is the key to everything. If my client is happy, I’m happy.

Creating space

I

The laundry is a crucial, hardworking area of any home, although usually not the one with the most space.

t is a challenge to fit all your needs in terms of bench space, storage, and functionality while still looking clean and stylish. If your home isn’t blessed with a large laundry space, then getting crafty with smaller spaces will allow you more room for getting your washing done, and the ability to store things efficiently. Look for areas from floor to ceiling that you can utilise. Wall hung cupboards, floating

shelves, and hanging clothes racks and hooks are all ways to create more space. A foldout or wallhung ironing board that can fold away into a cupboard or drawer is an easy space saver and ensures it will stay well out of the way when not in use. Built-in hardware solutions are perfect for utilising space and making use of areas you might not have even considered.

Clean your home with lasers That’s right, lasers. Now you can pretend you’re a Stormtrooper while you vacuum, except you’ll be far more accurate. Metropol’s gadget guru Ian Knott looks into the clever tech included in Dyson’s latest stick vacuum cleaner.

I

joke, of course. The Dyson V15 Detect doesn’t zap the dirt off your floor with futuristic lasers. If you have hardfloors though, the V15’s Laser Slim Fluffy™ cleaner head does direct a laser light onto the floor which reveals everything from large crumbs right down to the smallest dust particles. If you thought your floors were relatively clean, prepare to be thoroughly disgusted. But fear not, because every speck you are illuminating is about to not just be sucked up by one of the more powerful vacuums on the market, it’s about to be counted and sorted by the V15’s piezo sensor. A display then shows you in real-time the exact nature of the dirt you’ve picked up, along with a battery-life timer. Speaking of battery life, the V15 boasts a solid 60 minutes of run-time without any drop in suction, enough for even the largest family dwelling. While the laser is only effective on hardfloors, that doesn’t mean the V15 is any less effective on carpeted areas, rugs, pet beds and upholstery. The vacuum comes with two cleaner heads and five handy tools for any occasion. The Dyson DLS™ technology inside the High Torque cleaning head monitors brush

bar resistance 360 times per second and intelligently adapts the power needed across different surfaces. The head also features a de-tangling comb that automatically clears hair from the brush bar and directs it into the vacuum itself. The days of having to cut long hair from your vacuum head are a thing of the past. The V15’s powerful digital motor spins up to 125,000rpm, and 14 cyclones generate forces of 100,000g to not only pick up the most microscopic debris from deep in your carpet, but it flings them so fast through the filter that there’s no chance of getting clogged up. With multi stage filtration, 99.99 percent of particles and allergens as small as 0.3 microns are trapped in the machine. For a mere $50 extra you can upgrade to wholemachine HEPA filtration, meaning the air expelled from the V15 is even cleaner. Despite all this tech, the V15 weighs in at a mere 3kg, so it’s light enough for extended cleaning sessions, yet feels solid enough that you know you’re handling some quality engineering. With Father’s Day just around the corner, what dad wouldn’t want this high-tech beast of a vacuum? I know I do!

Pros: Powerful suction that delivers a deep clean. One hour battery life, enough for most houses. Lasers. Pew pew pew!

Cons: Like most stick vacs, the limited capacity needs emptying regularly.

Creating beautiful bathrooms S Many people who would have been renovating ahead of selling their house, are now renovating because they’re staying put.

everal television home renovation shows are based on the sell versus stay options. The renovations always add value to the homes. More homeowners in Christchurch are coming to this same conclusion, renovating to turn their houses into their forever homes. Here to help them is Butterfield Bathroom Renovations. Martin Lodge, Butterfield’s design consultant, puts the trend down to many deciding that they’re not going to be moving up in the housing market by selling their existing home, so they’re instead making it into the home they love,

that reflects their own personal taste. “This widens the choices in bathroom renovations and makes it more of an emotional decision. Clients can allow themselves to get excited about making their bathroom into something that makes their house a home. It’s all about what they like. They’re not thinking about what another owner might like or not like,” he says. A bathroom renovation isn’t dictated by the seasons. Spring and summer bring the ideal temperatures and conditions for some aspects of bathroom renovation (plaster and paint drying), however Martin says you can renovate at any time of year. “We mitigate any cold or damp winter days by bringing in heating to allow optimal drying conditions for paint and plaster.” When you know you’re renovating your bathroom, it’s time to get excited and creative. Martin says that the more time that people put into their bathroom design and planning, the simpler and more cost effective it will be to complete. “Everyone’s idea for their bathroom renovation is different. Be open-minded and talk to me and we’ll come up with something that’s beautiful and practical.” Butterfield’s newly refurbished mobile bathroom can be parked at during renovations, allowing homeowners to stay in the comfort of their house while the work is completed. Of course, a bathroom renovation adds value to any home. Martin has spoken to several real estate agents who agree that for every $1 spent on a bathroom, the owner will receive $1.50 back. Take the first step towards your new bathroom; phone Martin on 027 351 1601, email martin@butterfield.co.nz or visit the website for inspiration. www.butterfieldbathrooms.co.nz Metropol 19 August, 2021 67

I’ve found that where property goes, speculation soon follows, and the current climate of speculation focuses on the likely effect of an imminent increase in interest rates. There’s also the daily trumpeting of spectacular sales figures, an extraordinary demand for new housing and the implications of property tax changes. It’s a busy platform with opinions aplenty and one where the uninitiated and poorly informed can easily lose their way. Let’s start and stop with the interest rates. Not that long ago, economists were signalling a potential interest hike. The word ‘potential’ is a lovely thing for an optimist and given some of the sales prices I’m observing, a lot of people are treating this as unlikely. But it is. It’s very likely, in fact. I’ve read that there’s a 90% chance the Reserve Bank will raise the O.C.R. For those of you unsure of exactly what that means, here’s an absolute layman’s explanation. The O.C.R. was introduced in March 1999 and is reviewed seven times a year. The next scheduled review is August 18th. It influences the price of borrowing money in New Zealand and provides the Reserve Bank with a means of influencing the levels of economic activity and controlling inflation.

As a result, market interest rates are generally held around the Reserve Bank’s O.C.R. level. When increases occur, there can be a reluctance to spend on goods and services, and there’s a stronger incentive to save. It also follows that those with mortgages may experience higher interest rates. So, if you’re currently looking to buy, really work hard on your servicing calculation to avoid stress and talk to a mortgage expert (which I’m not) about possibly fixing. Having been brought-up in the times of 20% plus interest rates, however, I feel that we are still very lucky. In the meantime, everything you’re hearing about some fantastic sales results is true, tied closely to a reduced number of available properties and a strong drive from Kiwis in other parts of New Zealand, occasionally buying sight unseen. The reason being that Christchurch values are low compared to the buyers’ own cities. Spring is close, bank announcements even closer, and all of this could change as it does over time, but hopefully this has added a little more knowledge to current property rhetoric. Happy house hunting.

Outdoor furniture care Now is an ideal time to start checking outdoor furniture for the coming spring and summer. Get rid of any rickety old stuff and invest in sturdy weather-proof tables and chairs, or revamp your existing ones. Future-proofing is a sound investment so buy waterproof covers for outdoor furniture, regardless of the material. Or store it indoors during the harsher months.

Here are some ideas from Metropol to look after your outdoor furniture WOODEN WONDERS A cloth moistened with mild soapy water is recommended for light cleaning of wooden outdoor furniture. For a deeper clean – usually at the start or finish of each season – or for stains or mould, try scrubbing with a soft brush and a mix of water, detergent or bleach. Don’t overdo the latter. Sand and re-stain or paint for a fresh new look.

METAL MARVELS

PLASTIC FANTASTIC

Use a soft cloth and a mild exfoliant cleaner to remove dirt and scuff marks. Start with a quick wipe down, then deal with any rust by scrubbing with a metal cleaning material or a steel wool scourer, before brushing with a simple DIY mixture of vinegar and water. Paint over any paint chips and rust damaged areas, after cleaning.

Plastic and all-weather wicker furniture is low-maintenance, season-friendly for any climate, and cleaning is easy. Dust off and then wipe down with a mild detergent that is chlorine and bleach free. Lightly scrub tough dirt spots. Try WD-40 with a soft cloth to restore shine and make plastic look brand new.

Personal taste to the fore Outdoor entertaining is something to factor-in during the design process for your new-build home. Luke Gardner shares some ideas for creating your perfect outdoor space.

t’s about your own personal taste and just about anything goes.” When coming up with a plan, think about the situation of your section, your house shape and size, and its exposure to the elements. “Have a couple of points around your house for outdoor living, one that gets morning sun and one for afternoon sun. The main one could have an outdoor fire or a water feature and the other one could have a table and chairs for breakfast.” There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to trees or other plants, just think about how the colours work. Things can look a bit different once the job is underway, so this is something to anticipate and have some flexibility around. It’s okay to change your mind. Being the best they can

BLOOM in the city

Poise, passion, precision. Lisa Carrington has paddled her way to becoming New Zealand’s most prolific Olympic medalist.

BLOOM, the city’s spring festival of events, fashion, sport and music will breathe colour and vibrancy into Ōtautahi Christchurch.

After winning her third gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, her parents provided some sage advice to us all. As parents our children are the most precious things in our lives and we strive to provide them with the most nurturing environment we can. We all have different approaches to this, extending from the school of hard knocks approach all the way through to a more wrap around, risk averse, ‘bubble wrap’ approach. We, as parents, all fit on that continuum somewhere, and may well dip our toes into different aspects of this as different situations arise with our children. A key question for me is whether we allow our children

Our city is at its most beautiful in spring and BLOOM highlights the lively streets, events and hospitality scene to showcase the city, attract visitors and stimulate spending. BLOOM is held over the spring shoulder season, from September to November, to help bolster what can be a very challenging period – especially for retail and hospitality businesses. Overall, the economy has performed well this year. Despite the loss of international visitors, we’ve seen increased spending from residents and domestic visitors and strong economic confidence. But recovery has been uneven across sectors and the volume of visitors is down significantly on previous years. Now is the perfect time to

and students to take risks to enable them to flourish and thrive? Lisa’s Olympic tally is now five gold and one bronze medal. Lisa’s proud parents were interviewed after she won her third gold medal in Tokyo. Her mother’s top tip was to encourage our children and students to ‘take the leap’ and be supportive so they are safe in taking risks which allow them to go on new adventures. Our pillar of focus this term is Fearlessly Aim High. I think it is important that as parents and educators, we also ‘take the leap’ and encourage and support our children and students to aim high, be risk takers and be the best they can be.

PERFECTING AIR QUALITY

invite your whānau and friends to visit, stay a few nights and take part in BLOOM. From the iconic Riccarton Park and Addington Cup Weeks or New Zealand Agricultural Show, to epic tunes at Synthony, to Days of Ice which celebrates our Antarctic connections, to SCAPE Public Art with its quirky and cool creations – BLOOM will pack your calendar with things to do and see. And then there is the city’s newest major event – The South Island Moon Festival which will be a light, food and music-filled celebration of Chinese and East Asian cultures centered around the notion of bringing family and friends together. Come along and experience our brilliant little city in full BLOOM-mode.

CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL | MAYOR

Head to the hub If you’re less than enthusiastic while stacking the dishwasher after dinner tonight, spare a thought for the Ōtakaro team . Members of the team have been rapidly unpacking, cleaning and storing almost 8500 wine glasses, 7500 teacups and matching saucers, and much more at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, ahead of the first events later this year. Over a three-week period, up to eight trucks a day will be arriving at the centre to deliver every item needed to host the finest events in the city. You may even spot the additional traffic from over the road at Tūranga, where you will find our new interactive information station about New Zealand’s only purpose-built convention centre. The display features an augmented reality experience

that will take you inside the facility before the doors even swing open. There’s also a detailed 3D model of the building and a sample braidedriver façade panel to give a greater appreciation of the intricate design. We know that while the vast majority of people believe Te Pae Christchurch will be of real benefit to the city, far less of you feel you know much about the facility. What better way to rectify this than by putting everything you need to know on display in the neighbouring knowledge hub. It’ll be a far easier way to get an understanding of Te Pae Christchurch’s inner workings than drying the 9000 side plates being unpacked.

Breaking down barriers The launch of the Christchurch Invitation: Mahia te Aroha last month was a very moving event, for all who attended. Seven Gold Bravery Awards were presented by the Governor-General, Dame Patsy Reddy, in her role as patron of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand. The flood of support, unity and compassion in response to the mosque attacks of March 15, 2019, is what the Christchurch Invitation seeks to keep alive. Mahia te Aroha represents action motivated by compassion and is something we can all make part of our lives by spreading peace, sharing kai, reconnecting with others, and reflecting. There are simple acts that we can do every day. Spreading peace can be as simple as saying something to make someone smile or helping someone

with a problem. My favourite is sharing kai. Food breaks down barriers. When we sit down with others, we can learn about who they are. Sharing ideas, asking questions and opening up to another world – that’s how barriers come down and friendships are forged. Reconnecting could mean phoning someone you have not spoken to for a long time. It could also mean learning how to pronounce a person’s name correctly. And reflecting could be disconnecting from technology and walking in nature. Look around for things that bring you a sense of awe and wonder. Take a minute to reflect on what you could do. www.mahiatearoha.nz

Female Ara graduate and engineer Katie Thomas hopes to inspire more women to follow in her footsteps.

T

Women taking on trades

rades are awesome,” she says. “One thing I enjoyed about getting into engineering is that the culture is really cool. It’s usually quite fun - the boys can go a little bit over the top, but it’s a hell of a good job in any of the trades. “I meet lots of tradesmen all over the place - sparkies, plumbers - and everybody sort of gets along well. I also have a good sense of humour - that helps!” says Katie. While female participation in New Zealand trades has increased, it has still not been enough to lift participation above 12 percent of the trades and support staff workforce. Within the New Zealand economy particularly, this means that women are not benefiting equally from the current building boom or the associated activity that makes up such a significant portion of the nations’ GDP. Initiatives are currently underway to uncover the

barriers that may be preventing more women studying trades. ‘Women In Trades’, is a threeyear research project jointly commissioned by the Ministry for Women and Ako Aotearoa. The project is designed to “increase the participation and success of women in construction and engineering related trades where they are traditionally under-represented.” The research so far has found that the women surveyed cited five primary obstacles to starting a career in trades, ranging from a lack of personal knowledge about the wheres and hows and of work experience in general; identifying employers who will take on women, the predominantly ‘male’ culture of the sector, and a lack of support for working women in the trades. BCITO aims to have women making up 10 percent of its apprentices by 2025 and to have women filling 30 percent of construction trade jobs by 2040.

paintings and objects, ranging from the mid nineteenth century to today and including works by some of New Zealand’s best known and much loved artists. They had planned to gift their Scarborough house to the people of Christchurch, but the earthquake forced a change of plan. They instead formed a partnership with the Museum, through their charitable Ravenscar Trust, to create a new house on land at 52 Rolleston Avenue. The house, built by the Trust is now owned by the Museum. The site was gifted to the project by the Christchurch City Council following public consultation in 2015. The Ravenscar Collection, which has been loaned to the Museum by the Trust, will be displayed in a domestic setting referencing the entrance lobby and four principal rooms in the Scarborough house. Designed by award-winning architects, Patterson Associates, the house is set in a landscaped garden featuring a number of sculptures. Steve Wakefield, Chairman of the Ravenscar Trust, said that the family was incredibly excited to see Jim and Susan’s vision now a reality. The $16 million development has been funded by Trust funds and an insurance settlement from the loss of the Scarborough home.

Shaping our buildings When it comes to building, several questions immediately spring to mind.

W

hat attributes are you likely to look for when considering a company to build your new architecturally designed home, to renovate your existing home or to work on your commercial development? is one of them.

Mostly the answer is proven skill, expertise, longevity of experience, good communication and commitment, along with a feeling that you can genuinely trust your builder. Brothers Todd and Dax Morel more than fill all those requirements.

Morel Construction

The brothers’ story They grew up on a South Canterbury lifestyle property with a father who collected “stuff”. “Dad just kept buying more and more vintage tractors and other farm machinery,” says Todd. “We were roped in to help him build sheds to store all the machinery and to restore it. This is where we developed our core knowledge, and also a solid work ethic and passion for everything hands-on. “We have never lost that in all the decades we have worked in the industry. We are still on the tools.”

Both brothers completed apprenticeships with leading commercial construction companies and worked on many high-profile projects such as the Christchurch Arena, Christchurch Casino, Canterbury University Commerce Building and earthquake strengthening of the Canterbury Museum. Eventually the ‘Big OE’ called, enabling the brothers to branch out into other areas of the industry ranging from high spec architecturally designed buildings and project management to multi-storey commercial construction and civil works.

They had long intended to work together in their own company, and in 2009 took on their first contract to build a medical centre at Rolleston. Numerous contracts have followed, both commercial and residential, and their company has grown, especially in the aftermath of the earthquakes. Todd admits the construction industry is a hard game, and “cut-throat” now that the easy pickings after the quakes have dried up. “Our strength is that we won’t compromise on quality or cut corners just to win contracts. We’ve ridden both highs and lows over the years and of necessity have honed the business down to the taut fighting machine it is today.” Both are dedicated to the construction industry and to ensuring standards. “It is a great industry, a creative one, even an art form. We love making something perfect, says Dax. “We see high-end architectural builds as our way forward. Our preferred model is early engagement with architects and clients to keep everything on track and to budget. We certainly commit to doing the very best for all involved in a project.” www.morelconstruction.co.nz Metropol 19 August, 2021 85

Black is the new white Everything happens in the kitchen. With its key role as the setting to our lives, we need our backdrop to reflect who we are, allow us to function at our best, and of course, show us in our best light.

T

he colour trends in our kitchen settings flowed from the oranges and browns of the seventies, through the

pinks and greys of the eighties, moody blues in the nineties, to arrive at pristine whites and pearl greys as the century

changed. Whites remained king of our castles for longer than most palettes, finding their place in every style of home and allowing us to imprint character through accessories in neutrals or brights. This year, white gracefully cedes sovereignty to black, with the focus also on matte

and suede finishes. Bates Joinery is at the forefront of the trend, creating striking kitchens in shades of charcoal through to black olive, jet, and onyx. “We have been off-setting black shades of cabinetry with white marbled bench tops, and sometimes complementing the black finishes with timber accents or features,” says designer Jaden Allworthy, “and the results are stunning.” www.batesjoinery.co.nz
