In this first iteration of the project, Cantabrians are invited to connect with change organisations, community groups, innovators, entrepreneurs, and creatives alike. “The past couple of years have wrought big changes to the ways we work and connect with each other. This project brings a range of people together, tests ways of sharing space, and hopes to support a flourishing, wellbeing-focused economy,” says programme director of The Green Lab, Khye Hitchcock. The multi-function space is fitted out with creative furniture that supports connection and collaboration (including a ‘Green Connection Pod’), and of course, plenty of plants delivering all the wellbeing benefits that come from being surrounded by them. During the day and some evenings for the next six weeks, The Green Lab will also host events, conversations, and opportunities to join community groups, innovators and organisations as they share what they love to do. Understorey is a pilot project; The Green Lab’s dream is to find a permanent home supported by a sustainable business model. The pilot is supported by the COVID Lotteries Response, Christchurch City Council, and The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora.

What comes next? Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel is not seeking re-election in October 2022. She talks to Lynda Papesch about life, love and loss.
F
or more than three decades since first elected to public office, outgoing Ōtautahi Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel has constantly been in the political and public spotlights. The last 10 years have seen her at the 8 19 August, 2021 Metropol
forefront while the city has battled floods, fires, earthquakes and terrorism, leading the charge to resurrect, reshape and reconnect communities, infrastructure and civic pride. Now after three terms as mayor, it’s time for a change, she says.
“The reality is the one person that I need by my side, my husband Rob who died last year, has gone.” Where her new journey will lead she doesn’t know, but will always be proud of what has been achieved during her time

as mayor, especially the relationships that she has helped build with mana whenua. “We have connected with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and developed relationships with the six Papatipu Rūnanga: Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga, Te Rūnanga o Wairewa, Te Rūnanga o Koukourārata, Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, Ōnuku Rūnanga, and Taumutu Rūnanga.” Strong ongoing relationships are vital to Christchurch’s future, she believes. “The foundations are there, but we have further to go. Experience has shown me that true partnership is the only way to achieve the best results. “This is never more important than now as we face a massive reform programme – three waters reform, Resource Management Act reform, National Policy Statement – Urban Development, the Future for Local Government Review (to name a few). At the same time, we are taking on the challenges of an uncertain future, including the impacts of climate change and advances in technology.” Another challenge, Lianne believes, is that people are not as inclusive of diversity as most of them want to be; an issue her successor will need to continue working on.
This brings Lianne to the subject of her replacement. “The role of mayor is one few people truly understand,” she explains. “People see the ‘politics’ of the council table played out in the media. Trying to manage that environment, however, is only one part of the role. There is also a civic leadership role, representing and speaking for the city. That’s the real privilege. Whoever is elected mayor will have Lianne’s ongoing backing. “I’ll always be at the end of the phone if needed,” she says. Lianne is quick to point out that general politics is not on her agenda, nor is she retiring. “I’m a qualified lawyer and I wouldn’t mind finding something that could use my legal brain. “I love Christchurch and representing the city where I was born and have lived all my life has been an absolute privilege.”

Why the chopping and changing about the seating capacity? The plan to reduce the Canterbury MultiUse Arena’s capacity down to 25,000 seats existed for all of about a fortnight. The Central City Recovery Plan - dubbed the Blueprint - designated the current site for the facility between Madras, Barbadoes, Hereford and Tuam streets. It identified it as a closed-roof arena with a seating capacity of 35,000 back in 2012. Following approval of the business case and refining of the budget, a compromise was struck to reduce its seating capacity to 30,000. The reduction wasn’t ideal but it was reluctantly accepted. In the wake of Covid, the arena project faced significant cost escalation and council staff proposed that its seating capacity be cut from 30,000 to 25,000. This was passed by council [Christchurch City Council] however I, along with four other councillors (Sam MacDonald, Catherine Chu, Aaron Keown and Phil Mauger), was strongly
What sort of events will the venue cater for? The facility will be a true multi-purpose arena in the heart of the central city, rectangular in size and with a covered roof. It will be ideal for sports such as rugby and soccer and other major events like concerts, expos and e-sports. It is worth noting too that although it will have a seating capacity for sports of 30,000, it will have a concert capacity of around 41,000. It will have an unparalleled customer experience and will be, without question, the premier stadium/arena in the country. Are there plans/ space for future expansion if needed? No, preferably not! Given the structure’s footprint and closed roof, it is so important to recognise that we have only one chance to do this – we build it once and build it properly. What is the timeline? Preliminary design for the now 30,000 seat arena is about to begin, and we will look to sign the Design and Construct contract early next year, with construction beginning shortly thereafter. It is expected to open at the end of 2024.

We received a tremendous amount of public support, which included a petition signed by over 24,000 people, who also felt strongly that the council needed to stick with the programme and build it with 30,000 seats like it had agreed to. Our persistence paid off when Sam MacDonald and I brought a Notice of Motion to the council two weeks later for the previous decision to essentially be rescinded and for the project’s budget to be amended instead so we could build it with a 30,000-seating capacity as planned. It was an epic turnaround for the ages and very satisfying for our Notice of Motion to pass with only two councillors opposing it (Yani Johanson and Sara Templeton). It was the right decision and a real win for Christchurch. It was about cementing our city’s competitive advantage with this facility; it was about doing what you say you’re going to do; and it was about futureproofing a tremendously important legacy asset for our city and wider Canterbury region.

Magical, elegant pieces Formerly a top New Zealand fashion designer, Takaaki Sakaguchi now creates in clay instead of cloth. He explains why to Lynda Papesch.

lder generations may well remember the Sakaguchi fashion label and its talented designer. Some may even wonder what happened to him. Ponder no more; Takaaki Sakaguchi is back creating, only now his hands have turned to fashioning more solid objects d’art. Born in Osaka, Japan, Sakaguchi always felt drawn to the arts, and especially fashion, at an early age, working his way up the fashion industry
ladder initially in his home country. A move to Auckland created the opportunity to start his own fashion label, Sakaguchi, with outlets throughout New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. As his brand grew in reputation so too did his workload, with shows at New Zealand Fashion Week, judging at the World of Wearable Art Show, and, of course, designing his collections. “By 2015, it was time to have a break from all of the pressure of the fashion business; I decided to close the manufacturing side and just concentrate on design, freeing up time for other pursuits,” he recalls. “I wanted a more relaxed lifestyle, but wanted my creativity to continue.” A few special clients still wear Sakaguchi fashion designs, created just for them, however now ceramics is his overriding love. Although he’s lived in Christchurch since 1998, it wasn’t until February 2017 that Sakaguchi joined the Canterbury Potters’ Association, developing a passion for ceramics which now rivals his previous fashion interests. The recipient of numerous awards for his ceramics, he exhibits regularly. His work, he feels, is largely influenced by his Japanese sensibility, although not always in ways he is overly conscious of. At heart he’s a reductionist. “I have a love of the randomness and fluidity of nature, a love of texture, and a love of the colours of the earth. All of these are reflected in my work. What the future holds he has no idea. “That’s the exciting part as my ideas change over time. It’s so nice to have the freedom to just let that happen.”

aelene has gone from strength to strength in her career. Before joining Sport NZ, she worked in Australia as Chief Executive of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and then Chief Executive of Rugby Australia, and before that, Chief Executive of Netball New Zealand. As the first woman to take on some of these powerful roles, it is no doubt Raelene holds great influence. For young women with big aspirations, the prospect of achieving these high-level roles may seem impossible, and the historical lack of women leaders only fuels that. Raelene believes that for change to happen, there has to be female role models out there doing it. “You can’t be it if you can’t see it. Having role models such as the Jacinda Arderns, the Sophie Pascoes, the Women’s 7s team, those are the women little girls see as heroes.” For women wanting to climb the ladder into higher-up roles, Raelene says, “you can’t get the job you don’t apply for. Be brave enough and confident enough to try, and trust that you will be able to ask and learn along the way.” And in times of self-doubt? Her perspective is simple. “Don’t be afraid to employ someone better than you, smarter than you. There are lots of things I’m not great at, but I can employ an expert who is better than me. I can trust and support them and help them. You have to trust yourself that you can lead them.” When asked which women she finds influential, Sophie Pascoe, Billie Jean King, Oprah Winfrey are all on the list. But more than that, are the women she meets every day. “You don’t have to be famous to be influential, I meet women every day who I find influential. Women who volunteer at the local rugby club every single week make such a difference in their communities. That’s influential to me.” A final thought; not all advice is good advice, Raelene believes, but something that has stuck is, “Be authentic and genuine, but don’t be so close that you can’t kick their butts.”

When you think of your experience in real estate, what has been a stand-out moment? I have three stand-out highlights:
What’s one of the best things about the industry? It’s life-changing and most of that is to do with the people you meet on the journey and lifetime friends you make. I’ve also benefitted from a strong emphasis on personal wellbeing, growth, and development.
After 27 years in the industry, what is your number one piece of advice for success as an agent? You’re right, 27 years gives you a lot of time to formulate some guiding principles and I think these go deeper than advice. Everyone is going to offer advice based on their own experience and not all of it is helpful. I have had terrible advice given to me at times, especially early on in my career, so I’ve tried instead to stay true to my values. Expect to work hard (leave now if you can’t), surround yourself with good people, those that lift your spirits and your game, protect your integrity - once lost, like trust, it’s very difficult to reclaim, and treat people with genuine care and kindness.
Motivation has never been hard for me, I’m genuinely optimistic with a glass overflowing mindset.
Thinking back to when you first started, how did you stay motivated through the challenges that come with the industry? Motivation has never been hard for me, I’m genuinely optimistic with a glass overflowing mindset. Historically, the earthquakes were very tough, covid-19 and lockdown were especially difficult for me due to the level of uncertainty, but our mentor Gilbert Enoka reminds us in stressful times, “that this too shall pass,” and it has. My other secret weapon has been my family and partner of 45 years, Johnny. When did you first get on the property ladder? We were early home buyers and I had my 21st in our first home in Bishopdale. It was 1983 and it cost $57,000. A little bit has changed for me since then! How do you relax? A big bath every day, I find showers too business-like! Reading, thinking, walking, and laughing with and without mates.

Selina-Jane says the Collaborative Process aims to allow a separating couple to resolve issues in a respectful, calm way. “This takes into account a greater understanding of the psychological effects of separation and what this means when it comes to making important decisions,” she says. It’s also a case of “do as I do, not just as I say” with Gillian and Selina-Jane acting respectfully and cooperatively, in the same way that they ask of their clients. The two women sometimes bring in other professionals who are also trained in the Collaborative Process such as financial or mental health professionals or divorce coaches who can contribute added depth of expertise. The work of reaching resolution is done through a series of meetings and the clients are often involved in the drafting
of their agreement alongside their Collaborative lawyers. “A lot of clients are surprised at the first meeting by how informal and respectful things are – nothing like what they have seen on episodes of Suits. Separation can be a win-win. Our role is to help create solutions that meet the needs of all involved,” says Gillian. It’s not all sunshine though. Each party’s lawyer is there to provide sound legal advice so that their clients can make fully informed decisions, and to advocate for what is important to them. “I have had Collaborative Process cases where the couple could not come up to the first meeting in the same elevator but have left the process, not only in the same elevator, but going for a coffee afterwards,” says Selina.

The root of a toothy problem Has your pet fractured a tooth?
nimals will continue to eat even when they are in pain, so it is important not to just ignore it or wait until your pet stops chewing on that side of the mouth. That’s the advice from pet dentistry expert Janine van Dam, BVSc MANZCVS, who operates from Ourvets St Albans. “Once the enamel is fractured and the dentine is exposed, bacteria will gain access to the pulp cavity. Over time this will cause the death of the tooth and a tooth root abscess to develop,” she says. “The animal will need general anaesthetic for a proper examination. The fractured tooth should be X-rayed, then either extracted or undergo a root canal procedure. This procedure can be performed on any tooth in the mouth, and time is no issue. It can be done on a recently fractured tooth or on one that was fractured years ago.”
Janine says the canine teeth are the largest teeth in the mouth. While only a small part of the tooth is visible, there is a large root which attaches it securely to the surrounding bone by strong periodontal ligaments. “Canine teeth hold the tongue and lips in place, provide structure to the jaw and are used in eating, holding and playing. It is a good idea to keep these teeth in the mouth particularly in a young animal. “A follow up X-ray is required 12 months after the operation to ensure no complications have occurred, and after that time the risk of a problem is very low.” The success rate for the root canal procedure is high varying from 70 to 90 percent. As there is a restoration on the tooth, chewing on hard substances such as rocks, antlers or sticks can damage the restoration and should be discouraged, she adds. www.ourvetsstalbans.co.nz

ichelle Marsh, (pictured) a salon owner and operator for 23 years, is living that dream, for a second time. Formerly located at 60 Victoria Street, her salon Surreal reopened on July 6 at 66 Victoria Street. “It feels like a homecoming. As soon as I arrived here, I had that feeling of excitement again - all the things I had missed working in a proper salon.” The 2011 earthquakes required the salon to move to a renovated-for-purpose villa in Westminster Street. Incorporating vegetables into baking and desserts can bring delicious flavours and textures into sweet treats. Pumpkin
Already a sweet vegetable, pumpkin is delicious when used in baking and desserts. Pumpkin loaf, muffins, cake, or not so common in New Zealand, the classic American pumpkin pie. Usually always accompanied with nice spices including cinnamon and nutmeg, a pumpkin dessert makes for a lovely wintery treat.
Avocado
Loved for savoury brunches, avocado is more versatile than you may think. While technically a fruit, we had to include avocado as a must-try for desserts. The flavour turns out to be quite subtle when used with other stronger flavours such as cocoa. For a beautifully smooth mousse or pudding, try using avocado, you will be amazed at the result.
e all know and love a good carrot cake, yet there is a range of other veggies that work well in baking and desserts. Carrots, beetroot, courgette, and pumpkin all add nice textures, flavours and work to keep baked goods from turning out dry. As well as this, they of course bump up the fibre and nutrients which is always a win. Here are a few suggestions about what to whip up with your veggies next time you feel like making something sweet.
Beetroot
Another subtle flavour is beetroot, which when used in baking gives an almost nutty taste, and when paired with chocolate is beautiful and rich. It will also lend moisture to baking and stop any dryness. Try beetroot in chocolate cakes, muffins or mousse for pure indulgence. It can provide a stunning ruby red colour too if you let it be the hero ingredient.

Ingredients 1/4 cup cacao powder 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted 1/4 cup peanut butter 1/2 avocado 1 tbsp maple syrup Pinch of sea salt
Method Add everything to the blender and blend until smooth. Line a loaf tin with baking paper and pour the chocolate into the lined tin. Place in the freezer to set for 2030mins. Once set, cut into bars and store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Every business registered within a local body area must have a food control plan which sets out what steps food businesses must take to make their product safe. What good is a plan though if it is not implemented? Local councils can choose independent organisations to “verify” if food plans are being adhered to. This is Food & Health Standards’ main work. They are the preferred contractor to eleven councils across the South Island because of their exceptional history and because they have the critical mass of trained staff (verifiers) needed to carry out the work. And there is lots of it – over 1200 verifications every year for the councils. That is hardly surprising when you consider the range of businesses involved in the food industry. Traditionally the days leading up to and the start of spring are a time to clean up and clean out, in other words a spring clean.
I
prefer to think of it as a ‘spring fling’. I fling open curtains to let the light in, fling out clothes unworn for at least two years, fling aside winter woollies, throws and dark colours, and add freshness and light. Sprucing up your home may be as simple as taking a few hours to wipe over and dust surfaces and add some fresh flowers or going the whole hog and setting aside a full day or weekend to tackle what needs to be done. Here are some suggestions:
Spring Cleaning Checklist Wash skirting boards, ceilings, window sills, doors, and walls. Vacuum and wash vents, including heat pump filters. Wash or dry clean curtains. Dust blinds. nter the world of Steadfast Books in Woolston, where owner Heath Ling is an unabashed bookworm. Heath views himself as a curator and an historian, creating an ethical world for fellow booklovers. The shelves in his small corner shop are full to overflowing with all manner of genres, fact and fiction, vintage, and more recent publications. “My biggest problem is space,” he laughs. “Not having enough.” As well as books, some dating back to the 1800s, he offers a growing selection of DVDs,
retro nick-nacks, ornaments and memorabilia, and, when needed, a knowledgable perspective and sympathetic advice. “It’s all about having happy customers,” he explains. His regulars are not just older generations; younger readers often pop in looking for specific authors and/or genres. “I struggle to keep up with demand for George Orwell, for instance. It’s refreshing to see the quality of young customers and what they’re reading.” Customers form his extended family; many returning
frequently to stock up, indulge in a quiet read, a chat, and the occasional cuppa. That’s another reason he’d like more space – to offer an even larger book selection and

Metropol catches up with DJ Hewitt Builders’ principal Daryl Hewitt. What is your point of difference? It’s said that my strength is my fussiness. People are surprised about the little extras, such as the attention to detail, and things they weren’t expecting. We have built many homes over 26 years in business. You can’t teach experience. How did your story begin? I completed a Polytech block course apprenticeship in 1986 and was top apprentice three years in a row. After being a carpenter, I met

my wife and business partner Tara in Canada. We came back to New Zealand and renovated houses, and in 1999 built an award-winning Red Canadian style home in Brookhaven, which put us on the map. That was the last home when I was on the tools, after that I was in a management role. We built three show homes in Redcliffs and have loved the area. What nails the DJ Hewitt team? We are a big, loyal family of carpenters and subtrades, with
everyone working together and sharing the load. After our first year, we employed our qualified builder Kevin who is still with us. It’s a real team effort, with lots of loyal clients. Why are you such a great husband and wife team? We are the yin and yang. Tara keeps me grounded. She has always been passionate about interior design, especially when we renovated, and built, our own homes. Tara is always looking for new ideas and has a good eye for new trends. She is the glue that pulls the interior together. Quite often we’ll both think of an idea. I do the technical and Tara adds the flare. How do you spend your time off ? It’s important to constantly sharpen your saw, and do things that relax the brain. I go mountain biking, skiing, or we walk on the beach at sunrise with our dogs Porscha and Wilson. Photography has also become a passion.
Why have you committed to staying local? I’m Christchurch born and bred. I’ve also stayed local because I always want to check things with my own eyes, as I can see different things others can’t. Again, it’s about quality control to keep clients happy. What is the key to your success? I make sure each build not only looks good, but is cost effective, and lasts the test of time. I’m always thinking in advance, up to a year ahead. It’s so important to always give good service and support to everyone involved. A year ago, we celebrated 25 years in business by recognising our loyal suppliers and subcontractors, who in turn have kept us on their priority list. It’s all about the client’s happiness and trying to keep everyone informed. Communication is the key to everything. If my client is happy, I’m happy.

I’ve found that where property goes, speculation soon follows, and the current climate of speculation focuses on the likely effect of an imminent increase in interest rates. There’s also the daily trumpeting of spectacular sales figures, an extraordinary demand for new housing and the implications of property tax changes. It’s a busy platform with opinions aplenty and one where the uninitiated and poorly informed can easily lose their way. Let’s start and stop with the interest rates. Not that long ago, economists were signalling a potential interest hike. The word ‘potential’ is a lovely thing for an optimist and given some of the sales prices I’m observing, a lot of people are treating this as unlikely. But it is. It’s very likely, in fact. I’ve read that there’s a 90% chance the Reserve Bank will raise the O.C.R. For those of you unsure of exactly what that means, here’s an absolute layman’s explanation. The O.C.R. was introduced in March 1999 and is reviewed seven times a year. The next scheduled review is August 18th. It influences the price of borrowing money in New Zealand and provides the Reserve Bank with a means of influencing the levels of economic activity and controlling inflation.

As a result, market interest rates are generally held around the Reserve Bank’s O.C.R. level. When increases occur, there can be a reluctance to spend on goods and services, and there’s a stronger incentive to save. It also follows that those with mortgages may experience higher interest rates. So, if you’re currently looking to buy, really work hard on your servicing calculation to avoid stress and talk to a mortgage expert (which I’m not) about possibly fixing. Having been brought-up in the times of 20% plus interest rates, however, I feel that we are still very lucky. In the meantime, everything you’re hearing about some fantastic sales results is true, tied closely to a reduced number of available properties and a strong drive from Kiwis in other parts of New Zealand, occasionally buying sight unseen. The reason being that Christchurch values are low compared to the buyers’ own cities. Spring is close, bank announcements even closer, and all of this could change as it does over time, but hopefully this has added a little more knowledge to current property rhetoric. Head to the hub If you’re less than enthusiastic while stacking the dishwasher after dinner tonight, spare a thought for the Ōtakaro team . Members of the team have been rapidly unpacking, cleaning and storing almost 8500 wine glasses, 7500 teacups and matching saucers, and much more at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, ahead of the first events later this year. Over a three-week period, up to eight trucks a day will be arriving at the centre to deliver every item needed to host the finest events in the city. You may even spot the additional traffic from over the road at Tūranga, where you will find our new interactive information station about New Zealand’s only purpose-built convention centre. The display features an augmented reality experience
that will take you inside the facility before the doors even swing open. There’s also a detailed 3D model of the building and a sample braidedriver façade panel to give a greater appreciation of the intricate design. We know that while the vast majority of people believe Te Pae Christchurch will be of real benefit to the city, far less of you feel you know much about the facility. What better way to rectify this than by putting everything you need to know on display in the neighbouring knowledge hub. It’ll be a far easier way to get an understanding of Te Pae Christchurch’s inner workings than drying the 9000 side plates being unpacked.
Breaking down barriers The launch of the Christchurch Invitation: Mahia te Aroha last month was a very moving event, for all who attended. Seven Gold Bravery Awards were presented by the Governor-General, Dame Patsy Reddy, in her role as patron of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand. The flood of support, unity and compassion in response to the mosque attacks of March 15, 2019, is what the Christchurch Invitation seeks to keep alive. Mahia te Aroha represents action motivated by compassion and is something we can all make part of our lives by spreading peace, sharing kai, reconnecting with others, and reflecting. There are simple acts that we can do every day. Spreading peace can be as simple as saying something to make someone smile or helping someone
with a problem. My favourite is sharing kai. Food breaks down barriers. When we sit down with others, we can learn about who they are. Sharing ideas, asking questions and opening up to another world – that’s how barriers come down and friendships are forged. Reconnecting could mean phoning someone you have not spoken to for a long time. It could also mean learning how to pronounce a person’s name correctly. And reflecting could be disconnecting from technology and walking in nature. Look around for things that bring you a sense of awe and wonder. While female participation in New Zealand trades has increased, it has still not been enough to lift participation above 12 percent of the trades and support staff workforce. Within the New Zealand economy particularly, this means that women are not benefiting equally from the current building boom or the associated activity that makes up such a significant portion of the nations’ GDP. Initiatives are currently underway to uncover the
barriers that may be preventing more women studying trades. ‘Women In Trades’, is a threeyear research project jointly commissioned by the Ministry for Women and Ako Aotearoa. The project is designed to “increase the participation and success of women in construction and engineering related trades where they are traditionally under-represented.” The research so far has found that the women surveyed cited five primary obstacles to starting a career in trades, ranging from a lack of personal knowledge about the wheres and hows and of work experience in general; identifying employers who will take on women, the predominantly ‘male’ culture of the sector, and a lack of support for working women in the trades. BCITO aims to have women making up 10 percent of its apprentices by 2025 and to have women filling 30 percent of construction trade jobs by 2040.

raig South of South Architects won four categories, including the Multi-Unit Dwelling Award for his work on the ‘Peterborough Housing Co-operative’ in Christchurch’s central city. Based around the co-housing philosophies from Europe and America, the ‘Peterborough Housing Co-operative’ is 14 residential units, in a variety of unit sizes and levels, created alongside a large Common House and shared utility spaces. ADNZ judges described the project as “very well-executed and very timely.” South also won the best Regional Residential New Home over 300m2 for a Cashmere home titled ‘Folded Roof Home’, 2021 Regional Commercial/Industrial Award for his design of ‘Halswell Quarry Preschool’, and a Commended Award in the Residential New Home between 150m2 and 300m2 Category for his work on an ‘Alpine Holiday Home’ in Castle Hill. Mitchell Coll of Coll Architecture won two awards for his project ‘Cox Street’ in Merivale – the Regional Residential Interiors Award and a Highly Commended Award in the Residential New Home over 300m2 Category. Coll also won the Regional Commercial Interior Award and the Resene Colour in Design Award for his work alongside Pippin Wright-Stow of F3 Design on an unconventional office space in the heart of the central city.
Greg Young and Andy McLeod of Young Architects won the 2021 Regional Residential Interiors Award for their design ‘The Christchurch Style Revival’ at Moncks Spur. Young also received a Commended Award in the Residential Alterations and Additions category for his work on the project. Together with Andy McLeod, Young additionally won a Commended Residential Interiors Award for their Neo M.C.M project, a modernist design utilising exposed steel and timber to enhance the rich colour palette and subtle patterns. Architectural Designer Richard Humphries of Shaped Architecture Ltd won the Regional Residential New Home up to 150m2 Award for his design ‘Lyttelton Cube’, which replaced an earthquake-damaged cottage on a 389m2 mostly flat site in Lyttelton with a modern three-bedroom home measuring just 52m2 per floor, over two levels. Ben Brady of Linetype Architectural took home awards in the Regional Residential New Home between 150m2 and 300m2, and the Residential Alterations and Additions categories. Commended winners were Barry Connor Design, Sam Connell Architecture, Bob Burnett Architecture, Site Architecture Limited, Jackson + Jackson Architectural Design, Stufkens + Chambers Architects, and Objects Ltd. The national awards will be presented on October 29 in Dunedin.

Ravenscar House Museum is the vision of philanthropists, Jim and Dr Susan Wakefield, whose Scarborough home was extensively damaged in the February 2011 earthquakes. Last month the Ravenscar Trust officially gifted Ravenscar House to Canterbury Museum which will operate it as a house museum on behalf of the Christchurch and Canterbury community.
paintings and objects, ranging from the mid nineteenth century to today and including works by some of New Zealand’s best known and much loved artists. They had planned to gift their Scarborough house to the people of Christchurch, but the earthquake forced a change of plan. They instead formed a partnership with the Museum, through their charitable Ravenscar Trust, to create a new house on land at 52 Rolleston Avenue. The house, built by the Trust is now owned by the Museum. The site was gifted to the project by the Christchurch City Council following public consultation in 2015. The Ravenscar Collection, which has been loaned to the Museum by the Trust, will be displayed in a domestic setting referencing the entrance lobby and four principal rooms in the Scarborough house. Designed by award-winning architects, Patterson Associates, the house is set in a landscaped garden featuring a number of sculptures. Steve Wakefield, Chairman of the Ravenscar Trust, said that the family was incredibly excited to see Jim and Susan’s vision now a reality. The $16 million development has been funded by Trust funds and an insurance settlement from the loss of the Scarborough home.

Shaping our buildings When it comes to building, several questions immediately spring to mind.

The brothers’ story They grew up on a South Canterbury lifestyle property with a father who collected “stuff”. “Dad just kept buying more and more vintage tractors and other farm machinery,” says Todd. “We were roped in to help him build sheds to store all the machinery and to restore it. This is where we developed our core knowledge, and also a solid work ethic and passion for everything hands-on. “We have never lost that in all the decades we have worked in the industry. We are still on the tools.”
Both brothers completed apprenticeships with leading commercial construction companies and worked on many high-profile projects such as the Christchurch Arena, Christchurch Casino, Canterbury University Commerce Building and earthquake strengthening of the Canterbury Museum. Eventually the ‘Big OE’ called, enabling the brothers to branch out into other areas of the industry ranging from high spec architecturally designed buildings and project management to multi-storey commercial construction and civil works.
They had long intended to work together in their own company, and in 2009 took on their first contract to build a medical centre at Rolleston. Numerous contracts have followed, both commercial and residential, and their company has grown, especially in the aftermath of the earthquakes. Todd admits the construction industry is a hard game, and “cut-throat” now that the easy pickings after the quakes have dried up. “Our strength is that we won’t compromise on quality or cut corners just to win contracts. We’ve ridden both highs and lows over the years and of necessity have honed the business down to the taut fighting machine it is today.” Both are dedicated to the construction industry and to ensuring standards. “It is a great industry, a creative one, even an art form. We love making something perfect, says Dax. “We see high-end architectural builds as our way forward. Our preferred model is early engagement with architects and clients to keep everything on track and to budget.
