t is with heavy hearts that we heard of the death of Stephen Collins last weekend. One of the most passionate advocates for Christchurch, he touched the lives of many in his fervent fight to make the city great again. Stephen Collins never did things by halves. When he created Collins Real Estate in 1972 it grew to the largest in its market before amalgamating with Harcourts to form one of the largest real estate companies in the country. It was Stephen who developed the technology, systems, training and education programmes never before seen in New Zealand, which made Harcourts the global leader it is today. He lost several buildings between the earthquakes and the consequential Government blueprint, but despite the city’s physical disfigurement, Stephen remained one of its most fervent supporters, after all, he’s never been one to shy away from a challenge. He always had a soft spot for the city that his parents had arrived in during the war.ABC AUDITED “Christchurch has been good to me,” he said to me in late 2014. “It has been my business base for most of my life and I felt I had a responsibility to reinvest back into the city.” The striking six-level, river-inspired building at 151 Cambridge Terrace was what he could do to replace what had been lost and, much like Harcourts, it has become a stand-out for AUDITED the city and a tribute to the man himself who lived life passionately and deliberately. Our hearts and thoughts are with Liz and their family at this time.

A TALENT By Melinda Collins

Jono, Ben and Sharyn had quite the award haul at this year’s New Zealand Radio Awards late last month, winning Best Music Non-Breakfast Team and taking out the Blackie Award with Producer Dan for their ‘Deadpool Marathon’. We caught up with this talented trio about their third year of livening up the radio waves in the afternoons. First of all, congratulations on your award haul at the Radio Awards! Jono: Thank you. Ben has some very incriminating photos of the judges and it finally paid off! How exciting was that for you? Sharyn: It was really exciting for me because I had never won an award! I had been nominated every year for 13 years and never, ever won. Jono and Ben already had heaps of them so it might not have been as exciting for them. How cool is it to get to hang out together for a day job? Jono: It’s a pretty sweet gig. Sometimes you have to really check yourself when you’re having a bad day and remember I’m getting paid to do the sweetest job in the world, which is talk s**t into a microphone. It’s a dream job. Do you consider your radio trio to be more friends or family? Jono: Fremily; a family of friends. You’re kinda locked in a room together for four hours a day, and that’s not including the time you spend before the show preparing, so you celebrate the good times, you cry over the bad times, so it is more like a family I’d say. By the way, Sharyn’s pregnant too, to make it a real family (joking!). Sharyn: Oh my god, don’t say that! I’d definitely say it’s more like a family. Doing a radio show with someone is such a weird relationship because it’s 8 July 4, 2019 Metropol

almost like you’re married, but there’s no sexy finale. Ben: And Jono doesn’t do any cooking! Sharyn: But you still have to communicate in the same way and look after your friendship and things like that and if anything ever happened to any of these guys, we’d cook for their families and stuff. Ben: At the same time we’re the first to mock each other for everything else. We know each other so well now, we know what buttons to push to not offend but to have a bit of fun. What have been some of your standout moments on the radio? Ben: The one that jumps out at me is when these guys blindfolded me and took me to Sydney and I had no idea what the surprise was going to be. All that ran through my head all day as I sat there with a blindfold and headphones on was that it’s going to be something with snakes or sharks or something horrible, but it turns out I was sitting in a room with one of my favourite comedians, Kevin Hart, so that was pretty cool. Sharyn: For me, it’s that our show is not afraid to talk about things that matter and things that are important, even if it’s things that are hard for us to talk about. We’ve talked about some pretty heavy topics, but Jono and Ben have embraced it. It’s not a highlight at all because what happened was in no way a highlight, but how our show came together, as

a family, on the day of what happened in Christchurch. It was a horrific event and in no way a positive thing, but it was really beautiful to see the power of radio to bring so many people together, to look after each other in such an awful time. Jono: And I have no highlights. Nothing but lowlights. I have highlights in my fringe right now because I went blonde a few months ago, I can’t afford to keep it going, now the regrowth’s there.

Sharyn what have you been able to take from the experience of working with these guys? Sharyn: Well I don’t know if they’ll let me get through it, because every single time I try to compliment Jono and Ben, they interrupt and don’t take the compliment because that’s who they are. In our industry, there are so many big egos and whereas Jono and Ben don’t have an ego at all and it’s amazing. I also don’t think people realise just how hard they work. I don’t think I’ve met anybody in this industry that always gives it a thousand; most of us are just striving to give it a hundred. The big thing for me is I used to cry and get really upset every time anyone ever said anything bad about me and I think they’ve really taught me that it doesn’t matter what one person thinks of me because you know the actual truth, so I shake that stuff off easier than I used to. Ben: Basically we showed Sharyn all the horrible comments there were about us out there and she felt a lot better about herself. Sharyn: See what I mean though, can’t take a compliment without a joke! It’s

just not in their DNA, they’re just not egotistical in any way, which is amazing.

And boys, how have you benefited from working with Sharyn? Sharyn: They have to talk about their feelings a lot more. Ben: It’s true! I think we’ve sort of grown as people and broadcasters, working with Sharyn, coz you do talk about stuff you probably wouldn’t have gone near; things that matter. It’s really cool to talk about those things and be more real. What is something about each of you that people would be surprised to know? Ben: Jono’s not actually bald! Jono: I think people are surprised we actually work hard. But we do put a lot of time into planning for the show because we want it to be good. Sharyn: I think people would be surprised that Ben is quite a sensitive dude and Jono works constantly. It’s hard to think of one ever for yourself, mine’s probably something like… Jono: Well the thing with Sharyn is she’s exactly who she is on the radio. That’s why Sharyn is so good at her job, because you know exactly who she is; she’s real. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? Jono: Contract negotiations. Ben: That’s a great question for our boss! Jono: We’re in the last year of our contracts… Jono: There could be an interview at Metropol Magazine! Do you need any writers? Not good ones but… Sharyn: Hopefully keep doing what we’re doing and not get fired! Metropol July 4, 2019 9

WHAT’S ON

Matty McLean is the common denominator whether it’s sunny, windy or there’s a spot of rain on its way. We caught up with one of the country’s most beloved presenters about his journey from Christchurch to the big smoke and what he’s got on the horizon, before he headed off to Celebrity Treasure Island. What attracted you to the field of journalism and the media? When I was 10, the local radio station in Queenstown reached out to my primary school, looking for student volunteers to help host a Sunday morning kid’s show. I was a little bit partial to the spotlight, so immediately put my hand up. It was my first taste of the media world and I was hooked. I loved talking to people, hearing their stories and sharing them with others. I decided pretty quickly I wanted to be a journalist. You grew up in Queenstown before heading to Christchurch to study broadcasting. What do you love the most about our little southern spot? I absolutely adore everything about the South Island. I was pretty spoiled calling Queenstown home and Christchurch was the perfect next step when I needed to move away for university. It was so picturesque, with amazing spots like Banks Peninsula and Mt Hutt so close, but with a big city feel. I was only there for two years, but Christchurch still holds a really special place for me. I love any chance I get to head back there.

You got your first break on Breakfast as a freshfaced 20-year-old in 2007. What have been some of your biggest career highlights in the intervening years? I have honestly been truly blessed – if you saw my baby-faced 20-year-old self, you too would be utterly surprised that anyone had let me appear on national television. But they did and my career has been so incredibly rewarding since then. I’ve travelled overseas to places like Shanghai and LA, interviewed everyone from Prince William to Will.I.Am and been a part of some truly insane television, like the time we performed a wedding live on Breakfast for two of our viewers. I’ve been at TVNZ for 12 years now and I honestly do still pinch myself that I get to do this every day. You’re in a very high-profile role and publicly acknowledged you were gay during this career. What was that experience like and how far do you think we have come in terms of accepting diversity? I was actually just starting my career when I decided to come out to those closest to me –

although, in fairness, I’m not sure anyone was particularly surprised. After that, I was always pretty open about who I was, but never discussed it publicly, until the marriage equality debates started. It was then I realised I could possibly use my position to help the cause, so I made a submission and ended up speaking in parliament in front of the select committee. It was a really special experience, and rather liberating to do so publicly. The response absolutely blew me away – people were so kind and accepting and when the marriage equality bill passed, I really did feel a major shift in the way this country operated. There’s still a long way to go, of course – homophobia is still alive and well – but we’re getting there. I truly think we’d be a much better place if we were all just kinder and let people live their lives the way they authentically want to do. When you’re not reading the weather, you’re a marriage celebrant… that’s a bit left field! How did that come about and what do you enjoy about this rather unusual role? I arrived at that age where my friends started getting engaged, and I really started falling in love with weddings. I just thought it would be a really incredible thing to be part of, especially for people I really cared about. So I went through the process to become a celebrant and have been doing it now for about six years. It honestly is so much fun and I never take it for granted – what a privilege it is to be asked to officiate someone’s big day. I mostly just do it for friends of mine these days and I’ll keep doing it until people stop asking me, probably. You headed off for your OE in 2016, now you’ve come back and bought a house with your partner (congratulations by the way!). What do the next 12 months have in store for you? Yeah, it’s been a busy few years. I moved home from the UK, started on Breakfast, met my partner, got a dog, bought a house. So, in all honesty, I’m quite enjoying the fact that I’m able to relax a bit in 2019. But we’re still doing some DIY work on our new home, which is really rewarding. Breakfast is going gangbusters at the moment, so I’m still having an amazing time on the show. And I do have a couple of other really exciting projects in the pipeline – so watch this space! I’m feeling pretty pumped about the next 12 months.

guts & grace W

90 YEARS THROUGH

By Cheryl Colley

The Christchurch City Mission is one of this city’s most respected and active caring organisations. It was born during the start of the Great Depression, is the last of New Zealand’s Anglican-founded city missions, and this month celebrates its 90th birthday.

12 July 4, 2019 Metropol

ith this birthday, the mission will finally tell its story in a specially commissioned book entitled Guts & Grace. “It is a remarkable story of vision, generosity, daring experiment and fruitful partnerships,” says author Geoffrey Haworth. “The Mission’s history is

marked by guts – the courage of its staff and volunteers and of those who ensured it survived and grew. It is also marked by grace – the impulse to freely offer assistance to those in need, because grace is what is needed to touch the human heart.” Matthew Mark, the current City Missioner, echoes Geoffrey Haworth’s view. “Our Mission has been through depression, wars, financial and natural disasters and lately terrorism. Yet we are about to turn 90. That’s because as an organisation we have learned to be nimble and agile enough to provide people with the right solutions for each circumstance and to do that with absolute excellence. Our strength and our longevity lie in our ability to re-evaluate and review our services and our perceptions of what our community needs.” When the Mission first began, it was resourced mainly by goodwill and faltering amounts of money, in a city under dire economic stress. It could barely afford to pay its City Missioner. Yet within a few years it built its

own headquarters and set up a hostel for unemployed men. Today it has a staff of over 70 and hundreds of volunteers. It has a complex range of services, but still exists to help people who come to it because of particular issues in their lives. “I wanted to depict how intimately connected the City Mission has always been with the people of Christchurch,” Geoffrey Haworth explains. “Not even the Mission itself was fully aware of its past. That’s because its focus is of necessity on the present and the future.” Geoffrey found the majority of his material stored away in numerous unopened boxes in the City Mission’s basement. “What an archival treasure trove that turned out to be. I also interviewed practically all the staff members past and present back to the 1960s – some 34 people. What I learned from those interviews augmented and enhanced what I had found in the archives.” For Matthew Mark, Guts & Grace has captured the true essence of the City Mission. “It shows just how valuable each

piece of the Mission’s history is to what we are today and how the organisation has touched so many thousands of people. Our society has changed and its needs have grown wider, but with our increased and enriched awareness of the

past, we will move forward into the future even better equipped.” Guts & Grace will be launched at a celebratory 90th birthday service in the Transitional Cathedral on Tuesday 9 July.

funny, smart, sensible and sexy. We’re best friends. She’s the love of my life.” James then balanced life commuting between Auckland radio projects, which included starting the country’s first hiphop station, and continuing a two-decade tenure with Ngāi Tahu Tribal Council in Christchurch. Dianne’s two children, Tayla and Keely, asked him to adopt them on Father’s Day two years ago. James has two children to Sue, Natasha Guttenbeil and multi-media broadcaster Stacey Morrison, and Jesse is Nikki’s son. The family man says he’s learnt a lot during his campaign for councillor. “We all know the issues – there’s been a lot of talking and now it will be ‘the doing’. I believe the key is fostering real relationships with councillors, council staff and entities. While I will advocate strongly for the Coastal Ward, it’s important that everyone cooperates and works for the city as a whole. “I love this area,” he says of coastal Christchurch. “I love what we see out the window, I love the beach, the forest. I want to help breathe the life back into this beautiful place again. This will always be home.” James can be spotted milling around Brighton market on Saturdays, relishing random chats with the locals – and listening to their stories. “I’m very, very curious by nature – so this is my gig.”

James has always had a political bent. Some might remember back in ’89 when he and cohost Ken Ellis held the ‘James and Ken for Mayor’ campaign. “We bought an MK2 Daimler, added a female chauffeur and named her Mayoral Streep,” he chuckles. “We would ring up the council on air and see how long it took them to answer the phone.” Naturally Vicki Buck was elected that year. They went to North Brighton School together in the ‘70s. Vicki was girl dux and James, boy dux. Whānau means the world to him. “I was a child bride,” he says of his wedding to Sue down in New Brighton as a 17-year-old. “It was nine happy years. My second wife Nikki ended up running off with our builder – but now we’re the best of friends, she’s like a sister. Nikki actually came up with the name for More FM in 1991 and was incredibly supportive.” He left More FM in ’96 when public life and singledom “became too crazy,” and did a Commerce degree majoring in Property Studies. But life changed when he met his now wife of 15 years Dianne in 2003, just before he was declared bankrupt after investing in Cave Rock Bar in Sumner. “Humans, alcohol and cash are not a good mix!” he muses. “It was love at first sight when I met Dianne while I was singing on a Monday night down at The Bard on Avon. Dianne is literally and honestly everything I have ever wanted in a woman –

of Arts (Philosophy) and it was during his tenure here that he first dipped his toes in the political pool. He became a leader of ACT on Campus, the independent youth wing of the right wing classical liberal ACT Party. It was in 2005 that he first stood for the party in Mt Albert against then Prime Minister Helen Clark and he has headed it since 2014. At its political heart, ACT’s policies are focused around individual freedom and personal responsibility – including the right to freedom of speech, which has copped him criticism over the Israel Folau situation. But Seymour walks the talk himself,

getting candid about his own opinions on the public stage, in a time of sound bites and PR companies. So why is that level of transparency so important to him? “I still have the version of democracy in my mind you learn at school, where politicians put forward problems and solutions, and voters choose what they like best.” And, while he concedes that’s not necessarily the best electoral strategy – after all, it’s polarising to lay one’s opinions on the table – steadfast he remains. “I still have the view that a politician’s job is to put forward solutions for a better tomorrow and that’s why wrote the book,” he says, referencing Own Your Future: A Liberal Vision for New Zealand in 2017, which outlines ACT’s solutions to a number of pressing social issues. Catching up with Editor Melinda Collins ahead of his ‘beer, banter and politics’ speaking engagement on 29 July at The Carlton, he talks passionately about what he loves about his role. “We get to actually give people opportunities they wouldn’t have had under current policies,” Seymour explains, describing charter schools as the best example of that. Legalised after the 2011 general election before being abolished by Labour in 2017, charter schools were government-funded

but subject to fewer rules and regulations. They set their own curriculum, qualifications, teacher pay rates, school-hours and school terms. “We took a system where the Ministry of Education controls the type of education people get and said, actually a lot of communities out there have huge insights into our kids and it had huge success. A lot of kids who were not attending school were suddenly engaged. We did that, not by controlling anybody, but by taking power and giving back to the communities.” It was this relaxing of regulations in Christchurch’s post-quake construction sector that “largely resolved” the issues in the housing market, he says, with the housing market one of the three critical focus points he believes need addressing in New Zealand. “There’s no shortage of housing, there’s a shortage of land the Government will let you build on,” he says. “The Government is focused on home building, but there’s no point if you haven’t solved the land shortage.” The second of these focus points is education. “We have terrible underachievement; students who aren’t being equipped and until we get those kids engaged, the whole country has a huge problem that will be with us for generations. “Charter schools showed how we can empower communities to solve the problems with kids.” The final piece of the puzzle, he says, is productivity. “People complain that we can’t afford drugs for cancer, for instance. We are going to keep having problems like that if we don’t fix productivity. We won’t have a saving and investing culture, we will fall behind the world in terms of wealth and we’re not being the first world country we can be.” He’s likely the first politician in the world to twerk on television, so an interview with David Seymour can’t possibly go by without some Dancing with the Stars questions. In 2018, Seymour made it all the way to the semi-final of the competition, finishing fifth overall and the experience was, in his words, “fantastic” – though he suspects with the level of talent this season he wouldn’t have lasted quite as long. “Everyone, no matter what their job is, should take the opportunity to try something different,” he says. That opportunity enabled him to raise $70,000 for Kidsline, a charity he’s been involved in since he was a teenager. “Lots of kids are anxious; Kidsline is somewhere they can call for comfort and guidance.” He recently hit the dance floor again with former dance partner Amelia McGregor and her latest dance partner, William Waiirua, for a Great Gatsby-themed quickstep, scoring the trio a near perfect score of 29! Was it easier this time around? “It was definitely easier this year,” he says. “My main job was to stay out of their way and I succeeded in doing that!” So what’s next on the cards for this fleet-footed party leader? “Well, we need to see ACT grow,” he explains. “We need to see more people like me putting ideas out there for a better tomorrow. More freedom for individuals can make a real contribution to making New Zealand the great country it should be.”

City’s new boutique cinema The golden days of cinema have returned to Ōtautahi with Lumière Cinema recently lifting the curtain on the new cinematic experience at the Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora.

T

he boutique cinema has been created for Christchurch by well-known cinephile Nick Paris, who has worked in Christchurch’s cinema and film industry for 40 years, and Max Hoffman, a former screenwriter who wrote for several major motion picture studios in Hollywood. Set amongst the heritage

features of the restored Gothic Revival buildings, with the indulgent art deco features for inspiration, they have created a space that caters to those with the most discerning taste. The two theatres are decked out with high-back velvet chairs, while a curtain show is reminiscent of Italian grand theatre. Nick Paris says Lumière will

take filmgoers back to the good old days of cinema. “Although the habits of watching moving images are constantly evolving, the social value and pleasure of watching a film in a special place such as ours remains unique and undiminished,” he says. Lumière also features locally sourced libations and refreshments at one of their

little secrets – the Bijou Bar, overlooking the stunning Botanical Gardens. Within the splendid walls of the Arts Centre, Lumière provides a cinema-going experience that is second to none – not just for Christchurch, but for the cinematic world. It’s an experience that’s simply unmissable.

in the city

AWorld Away Tuscany Downs Estate is a true New Zealand luxury rural lifestyle experience on five acres of farmland near Darfield, Canterbury that caters to holiday getaways, weddings and corporate retreats.

J

ust 30 minutes from the central city and 25 minutes from Christchurch International Airport, Tuscany Downs Estate is in the heart of Canterbury-rural living with local wineries, ski fields and golf a short drive away. It’s the perfect location to experience the best of all seasons with large garden areas for relaxing outdoor summer living, or winter drinks beside the large outside open fire after a day at one of the six local ski fields. Over the last ten years, Tuscany Downs Estate has grown with its local environment and become a gateway to neighbouring attractions that complement the local experience, including a thriving local wine

making scene. Tuscany Downs’ proprietors Matt and Tracey Jones say the most overwhelming feedback they hear time and time again from locals and international guests is ‘Location’. Being within reach of Christchurch city, but immersed in a rural setting surrounded by farmland and views of the mountains means it creates the perfect base for a lifestyle holiday. “All the time we see people who are off for the day skiing, or off for the day on a wine trail, or even a day trip in to the city knowing they’ll return home to a quiet environment to relax in, and everyone loves drinks by the outdoor fire,” Tracey says. “We really want our local and

international guests to leave with a lifelong memory being able to say they know what New Zealand rural luxury feels like.” Tuscany Downs Estate now has an international reputation after hosting guests from over fifty countries, including Europe, North America, and Asia, and that includes people coming to get married. The requests for wedding venue hire has doubled in the last 5 years, largely due to the immediate social media posting of wedding photos. Matt Jones says, “When people see the setting in the photos it sells itself”. Originally designed and built as a luxury B&B, different markets have presented themselves since the earthquakes, including hosting for corporates when retreats, seminars and conferences became a regular theme as a result. Tuscany Downs has introduced a new branding campaign aimed at the corporate market titled ‘Bring the Boardroom to the Country’. This is a full-service offering including catering, seminar space for talks and presentations, plus the large garden space for team building or creative thinking. The portfolio of corporates who have used Tuscany Downs Estate as a boardroom on location includes local Canterbury companies and some of New Zealand’s largest brand names who have brought clients for product launches.

this year’s Twilight in the Vines hits the social calendar. We’re sure you don’t need an excuse to sit amongst the vines with

your favourite wine-drinking friends and savour the flavour that Ashburton’s only vineyard has to offer, but if you do, then this is it. There will also be live music and you can indulge in an alfresco dining experience from local caterers. Turning their talented hands to top quality Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Reisling wines, CharRees Vineyard also offers a world-famous (in Ashburton) Sparkling Pearl wine, which is a delicate combination of Reisling and Pinot Gris in a Sparkling form – a must try! While Mid Canterbury might be a little off the winery radar, its regional climate helps the grapes mature slowly at a steady pace, creating an ideal ripening environment. With this in mind, the grapes from CharRees Vineyard are selectively hand harvested for optimum flavour from this terroir. But the best way is to experience it for yourself. Find CharRees Vineyard at 22 Laings Road, Ashburton, phone 0800 2427 7337 or visit www.charrees.nz.

Reptile revival By Clementine Page

Slither your way into some seriously ssssssexy snakeskin numbers this season – long skirts, short skirts, coats, boots, bags…. you name it, it’s having a reptile revival.

I

t’s time to swap your leopard spots for some snake-y scales (not literal scales, of course)! A sartorial safari of animal prints have staked their claim on all

things fashion, with the everpopular patterns of leopard, zebra, tiger and crocodile proudly prancing their way down many a runway recently – so

we’re not surprised to see that now the punchy python pattern is having its well-deserved moment. Lunging itself into the fashion forecast for 2019, this sassy style is standing strong – and with an infinite selection of silhouettes to choose from, your fashion prey drive is bound to go wild. Every possible fashion item from bags and belts to boots and blazers is getting the serpent treatment – patent midi skirts, wide leg pants and trench coats in particular are popping up left, right and centre in the street-style sphere. And while

sandy shades and greyish hues are the go-to tones for this print, flashier colours are having their way with the pattern as we see everything from neon numbers to vivid shades like teal, moss green and magenta. Easily weave this trend into any 9-to-5 ensemble; keep it classy by pairing a neutral snakeskin skirt or shirt with other fellow earthy colours; think camel coat and white dress pants, and if you dare to embrace a vibrant touch of the trend, some fierce snakeskin boots in sunny yellow or bubblegum pink are sure to have you strutting in style.

Move over millennial pink, enchanting the runway this year is a brighter, bolder shade of baby blue known as icy blue. This hue brings to mind images of frosted lakes and snowflakes – making it the perfect colour to enhance your winter wardrobe.

S

olidifying its place amongst the other bright and bold colours of 2019, icy blue is a fresh and welcome addition to the season’s traditional colour palette of blacks, browns and

greys. This cool shade is on the brink of becoming a neutral staple thanks to its ability to be paired with almost all the colours under the sun! Convinced? Read on for our trendy top tips.

1. 2. 3.

Designers across the globe are reviving some of our favourite classics in this glacial shade, so be sure to stock up on other pastel pieces to mix and match; popular picks include pale yellow, lilac and powder pink. The slight silvery undertone of icy blue makes it easy to combine with classic neutrals like camel, stark white and classic black. Accentuate an allwhite ensemble with one or two bursts of this beautiful blue. For sophisticated balance, add a powerful punch of colour by pairing icy blue with trendy hues like coral, emerald green, ultra-violet and even ochre. Avoid neons as they are likely to clash or outshine.

5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Dare to bring on the bold? Go head-to-toe for serious impact; a jumpsuit, matching two-piece or tailored suit in this shade are three must-haves that are sure to have you looking ‘cool’. An old crowd favourite, navy is a signature winter neutral that provides just the right amount of contrast when combined with icy blue. Warm up your winter with a little sparkle – this magical blue works well with or as a glittery statement piece. Silk, patent pleather and lace are also proving to be particularly popular fabrics for this demure shade. For a sweet splash of blue, pepper in some accessories in this colour to any formal or casual look; think a coordinated combo of high heels, a chunky belt and silky scarf. Activewear is undergoing a serious sartorial transformation as of late so you can expect to see this bold colourway amongst the athleisure arena. For the ultimate trend-forward look, team icy blue bike shorts with a neutral hoodie and you’re ready to go! Winter weddings call for a cooler colour palette, so if you or a special someone is getting hitched this season, why not rock a dress or suit in the dreamy hue of icy blue?

Teeny-tiny totes By Clementine Page

Handbags are by our sides day in, day out, through thick and through thin. But unlike previous seasons, this year’s musthaves aren’t defined by shape, but rather by size.

KARMME MINI PURSE

S

hrunk down to fit no more than a phone and lipstick (if you’re lucky), this season’s most lust-worthy bags are also the smallest – blink and you’ll miss it. Over the last few years, the world’s greatest fashion houses have played with the size and scale of accessories – swinging from supersized silhouettes one season to teensy models the next.

From teeny-tiny totes to baby bucket bags, ‘cute’ is the look that’s taking over the handbag world. The micro bag: so comically small that they were declared ‘ridiculous’ when an onslaught of them hit the catwalk this year. Jacquemus first revived the trend in 2017 and it’s been making waves since – bags of diminutive proportions

hung from the fingers, wrists, shoulders and necks of models from Chanel to Fendi this season, proving that although small, the micro bag makes a big statement. And it seems there is somewhat of a purpose to these itty-bitty bags. Preventing you from being burdened by the weight of all your belongings

(crammed in alongside weeksold receipts, abandoned chocolate wrappers and empty lipstick tubes), these baby bags are designed to carry just the bare essentials – no more digging around in the black hole of your tote. So what are you waiting for? Downsize that big bag and opt for a dainty crossbody sidekick – or two.

All that glitters isgold

KAREN WALKER JUST-LAUNCHED JEWELLERY COLLECTION, SOCIETY

By Tracey Edwardes

Yellow gold is the hot pick to invest in this year and it’s now even hotter to go all out in its gorgeous glitter.

P

eople have adorned themselves in gold chains since early Egyptian times – guarantee that bejewelling yourself in the planet’s most beloved precious metal will always spell style. From Cleopatra through to the Kardashians, golden glam has remained a star. Recently the glittery little gold dress has even stolen

the spotlight off the little black one. And piling on the gold now is not overdoing it – it’s rocking it! Karen Walker captures the beauty of yellow gold in her just-launched jewellery collection, Society. She has crafted a signet ring and KW-bow adorned bracelet and necklace with a disc that can be engraved with a personal initial. And how

divine are her gold Electric Heart earrings? With gold prices soaring to a six-year high, maybe our psyches are revaluing its sheer preciousness. The more yellow a gold piece is, the more carats it contains. However, quality gold-plated jewellery and accessories are as affordable as ever. Classic and refined, wear for its beguiling, glittering charm. Yellow gold suits everyone but especially on neutral or warm-toned skins. For the demure amongst us, a gold necklace on a simple outfit instantly adds a million-dollar feel. Yellow gold buckles and embellishments on a black handbag totally ups the sophistication score. Just like first prize at the Olympics, timeless true gold will always represent number one in the wardrobe.

Cool new

fat freezing treatment

KM Surgical is thrilled to now have the state of the art Cooltech™ procedure within the clinic, considered one of the most advanced fat freezing techniques in the world.

C

omplementing Dr Ken Macdonald’s experience with VASER and Tumescent Liposuction, Cooltech™ offers a non-surgical approach to fat reduction. This technology freezes fat cells to a temperature of -8 degrees, causing cell death of subcutaneous fat without damaging surrounding tissue. Macrophages then eliminate the fat through the lymphatic system creating a more sculptured look over the

following weeks. A consultation with either their Registered Nurse Nicole or Dermal Therapist Danielle is required. These consultations are also overseen by Dr Ken Macdonald to ensure that Cooltech™ is the best procedure for you. Registered Nurse Nicole says that a full 30-minute consultation is required before going ahead with a procedure such as this. “At KM Surgical we want our patients to have the best possible aesthetic

outcomes, therefore we provide thorough and honest assessments that ensure our patients feel safe within the clinic and are happy with their results,” she says. “We are one of the busiest liposuction clinics in New Zealand, so you are in very safe hands.” Competitively priced, treatments range from $450$850 per session. Cooltech™ has been designed with two hand pieces so patients can

target two areas within the one session. During your 70 minute treatment you can work on your laptop or simply revel in the time to relax. “A session using Cooltech™ in the under-chin area works really well combined with some of our other therapies and appearance medicine for the face,” their manager Julia says. See the KM Surgical Facebook page to view a video of the Cooltech™ in action.

This season designers aren’t completely reinventing the wheel. Instead, they’re building upon the already strong foundations, adding embellishments here and there or introducing new shapes and materials. Stepping out has never been this much fun.

Cute Boots Slouchy or sleek, knee-high boots look groovy with this season’s minis for that back-in-fashion ’70s vibe. And under the midi and maxi lengths, they guarantee complete cover-up from the bitter chill. Block, cylindrical heels and square toes reign in vegan leather through to swish suede. Sturdy-heeled ankle boots are also pumping the fashion trail, so very sassy teamed with skinny pants and flowy-sleeves. Beyond the black Try zipping up your boots in chic navy, utilitarian khaki and tan tones, or rich racing green. Blush pink is still a staple, streamlining nude-toned winter outfits. Pale pairs well with light and natural heels. On the deeper side, burgundies and all the hues of a vintage-wine cellar look sumptuously warm where you would usually choose a noir neutral. Toe-tapping texture Embellishment with brocades add a crafty cool look, which is great with denim, whereas the high-gloss patent-leather look trawls back all the fun of the glam-rock ‘80s and the swinging ’60s. Hot tip: this shiny canvas is so easy to keep clean and footwear seems to retain its newness. Studs are making a statement, if you prefer to incorporate attitude into a pretty pair. Designer foot work New Zealand-designed Mi Piaci footwear are slinking in the texture of snake-effect leather, along with funky flared and offset heels, and also asymmetric top lines. Minx footwear has futuristic black and white flats with thick-soled bounce. And the Kiwimade queen of comfort, Ziera, is offering up whitesoled sneakers this season, seen in silver, classic styles and even floral. Vitamin C

Vitamin C’s the hottest thing to hit skincare since sliced bread. We’ve got a big dose of everything you need to know about this antioxidant and why we’re crushing on it right now.

years with its antioxidant super powers. We up the vitamin internally in the winter, so externally, it’s

logical to utilise the superhero’s properties to help fight those unavoidable free radicals in the environment – these arch enemies of our skin. Winter especially ravishes our faces with free radicals such as pollution, and the drying effects of cold winds and moisture-zapping home heating. We need plenty of collagen in our skin and neutralising antioxidants to be able to fight back – Vitamin C does both. The vitamin’s role in collagen is essential. It is the structural protein our bodies need to

create the connective tissues for our entire body. This building-block protein plumps skin with firm elasticity and luminosity. Collagen synthesis sadly decreases with age in our bodies, so the more help we can get from both inside and out to infuse the powerful C into the skin’s structural matrix, the better. By incorporating the vitamin in a form that is readily bioavailable to our skin, quality beauty products can now help heal, nourish and protect from the outside. And the science does stack up quite nicely. From serums to creams, the new age in skincare claims, in many cases, to help prevent and even reverse signs of aging such as wrinkles and age spots. Vitamin C as an antioxidant helps regulate skin tone. In a multitude of game-changing new products, it works in effective synergy with other antioxidant skin savers. Packaging and storage is also important to protect the vitamin’s effectiveness from light, heat and air. Yet another little trick up its beauty sleeve, Vitamin C neutralises chlorine, which can dry the skin. So for a bath that doesn’t smell like a swimming pool, add around 1000mg of Vitamin C in powder or effervescent tablet form to counteract chlorine tap water. It’s really a wonder that Vitamin C only comes third in the alphabet – but it comes first in our toiletry bags this winter.

Muscle People Physiotherapist Diana Chen demonstrates some of the Dynamic Spines exercises

Put your back into it!

Approaching life with a back that lets you do what you want, when you want to, is something none of us can take for granted. In fact, up to 80 percent of us will suffer from back pain at some points and it affects not just mobility, but also mood.

L

uckily, the team at Muscle People understands how core strength is a foundation stone of fitness without injury and a pain-free back. To strengthen the core which, in turn, supports the strength and healing of the spine, the team of physiotherapists at Muscle People has developed a programme of therapeutic exercise classes called Dynamic Spines. The classes are available at both the Hereford Street and Bishopdale clinics. Each course

consists of eight one-hour sessions, including exercises to take home and complete to get the most out of the programme. As well as the medical and wellbeing benefits there is an enjoyable social aspect to Dynamic Spines. Limited numbers mean you receive higher one-on-one attention from your physiotherapist instructor within each class as you work to your individual diagnosis and ability, but you also get to share the challenges and fun within a group setting.

The Dynamic Spine classes are run at two levels: the first level is about learning to locate and strengthen your core through dynamic and functional exercises, while the second level progresses these skills further. Before enrolling in a Dynamic Spines course, clients are assessed by one of the team to ensure the classes are going to be the best approach for their issues. “Our team wants to know that participants will see real results from the classes, before they make

the commitment to the programme,” Laurie Moore, Director and Physiotherapist at Muscle People says. Each course begins with low impact exercises which gradually build in intensity as participants progress. Classes can include pilatesfocused exercises and working out on the Oov - a fun, odd looking piece of equipment that activates core stabilising muscles while gently extending the spine. “People enrol in our courses through a number of routes,” Laurie says. “Because Dynamic Spine courses are designed and instructed by physiotherapists, they are available as treatment through the ACC system. We receive referrals from back specialists when clients need to strengthen their core before treatment, or post-surgical clients and, of course, we have private clients who want to address back pain, mobility and reverse a gradual decline in core strength.” To find out more about Dynamic Spines, phone Muscle People on 0800 027 194.

Listen Up! There’s a special place to go in Hornby for anything to do with your ears and your hearing. It’s the Hear Again clinic right next door to the BNZ at The Hub.

T

he clinic is very accessible for people on the south side of the city with parking right at the door and convenient opening hours; Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm. No need to cope with traffic or parking in the central city and there’s even the option of a home visit if you can’t make it to the clinic. The goal at Hear Again is to make hearing care as easy as possible. “We are a fully independent business based in both

Christchurch and Auckland,” owner Steve Foster explains. “Hear Again Hornby is our newer clinic and we are delighted that the team there is led by NZAS Audiometrist Neil Hardisty. Being independent means we can help our clients with all makes and models of hearing devices and give totally objective, honest advice.” The fundamental piece of advice both Steve and Neil offer is, “don’t hesitate to have your hearing assessed if you suspect there may be

an issue”. Perhaps you might be experiencing a ringing or a hissing sound in your ears that you hadn’t been aware of previously. Perhaps you feel that people around you in a social situation are mumbling; or perhaps your family are telling you that your TV is turned up far too loud. “These signs might indicate a build up of wax in the ear or they might indicate some level of hearing loss. We can carry out a free no obligation hearing assessment to determine what

the issue is. If it’s wax, that can be removed safely, gently and painlessly with a microsuction machine. If we identify some other cause for the symptoms we can then begin the process of helping clients on to the road to better hearing by fitting the appropriate hearing aids.” Invariably the reaction from clients once those hearing aids have been fitted is, “I wish I had done this years ago; I am hearing so many sounds I haven’t heard for years from bird song to the lyrics of music”. Steve and Neil say that at first all the unaccustomed sounds can be a little overwhelming, so part of Hear Again’s service is to prepare their clients for the change. They will initially set the hearing devices at a level where there is a definite benefit and then increase this over time. “Looking after our clients, really caring about their needs and offering a very personal approach is at the heart of everything we do at Hear Again. We look forward to helping you re-join the conversation and to ‘hear again’.”

Pumpkin soup WITH GARLIC CROUTONS

It’s a comfort food time of year, but that doesn’t mean you need to eschew health. Here’s a simple winter soup bursting with flavour – and veges!

1.

Soup Coat the bottom of a large saucepan with the oil and add onions and the bay leaf. Cook on low heat.

2.

When the onions are golden in colour, add the diced potatoes, leek and pumpkin. Turn the stove to medium and stir. Add the corn kernels and chopped tomatoes.

3.

Cover the pot and cook the vegetables for 20 minutes. Keep an eye on the pot to ensure vegetables don’t scorch. When they are soft, add the water and stir. Cook for half an hour on low heat.

4.

Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the chopped cilantro or parsley and cook for another 5 minutes.

5.

Serve as is, or blend to choice. Drizzle with cream and sprinkle with pumpkin seeds.

1.

INGREDIENTS For the soup 2 tablespoons olive oil 500g pumpkin, diced 1 medium potato, peeled and diced 1 head of corn 1 medium tomato, chopped 1 onion, diced 1 leek, diced 1 bay leaf 4 cups water

1/4 cup coriander or parsley Salt and pepper to taste For the garlic croutons 2 cups diced bread 1 clove of garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon salt A pinch of black pepper A pinch of thyme

Croutons In a frying pan, melt the butter together with the olive oil. Add the garlic and allow it to infuse in the butter/oil mixture, over the lowest possible heat for 15 minutes, ensuring the garlic doesn’t burn.

2.

Add the salt and pepper and thyme, then stir.

3.

Dribble the garlic butter through the diced bread, mixing gently. Bake the coated croutons in a hot oven for 20 minutes, turning them over twice.

INSTRUCTIONS

Ingredients 2 lemons ½ cup Egmont Raw Honey, plus extra to serve 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ⅓ cup coconut oil, melted 1 tbsp baking powder 1 ½ cups ground almonds

To serve 2 tbsp Egmont Raw Honey 1 tbsp coconut oil Juice of a lemon 2 tbsp pistachio nuts, chopped

1. SERVES

Lemon, Honey & Almond Loaf Straight out of Taranaki, Egmont Honey is a family business that’s appropriately named after the towering mountain that overlooks the entire region. After years of successfully exporting its Manuka to the world, they decided to share the honey love with fellow Kiwis. Now available in Countdown Supermarkets, Egmont Honey has two extremely popular varieties on offer – a delicious Lemon ‘N Honey and a Raw Honey. Try this deliciously bold and moist loaf by My Weekend Table Blog, made with

almonds, whole lemons and sweetened with Egmont Honey’s Raw Honey.

2. 3. 4. 5.

Place lemons in a medium pot filled with water. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 1.5 hours. Drain and cool. (This can be done a couple of days before if you wish.) Preheat oven to 180°C then grease and line a loaf tin. Roughly chop cooked lemons, removing seeds, then place in a food processor and blend to a pulp. Add honey, eggs, vanilla and coconut oil. Process until well combined. Add baking powder and almond meal and pulse until just combined. Pour into your prepared loaf tin and bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Remove from the oven and poke a few holes in the loaf. Melt together honey, coconut oil and lemon juice and drizzle over loaf while warm. Cool for 20 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack. Slice extra lemons in you wish and sprinkle with pistachio nuts.

Putting the

mystery in dining By Clementine Page

Emphasising the ‘fun’ in fundraiser, Ronald McDonald House’s Christchurch Supper Club annually celebrates Christchurch’s finest dining destinations, with a kind-hearted, essential purpose underpinning each culinary experience: to accommodate and support families who must travel to Christchurch for their child’s medical treatment.

D

ressed in their very best with champagne flutes in hand, guest after guest gathered at the Isaac Theatre Royal on 21 June for the charity’s fundraising event of the year. Not knowing where they’d be dining, the guests awaited the famous mystery draw with anticipation. Which of the 34 unique

destinations would be theirs for the evening? Welcome to the excitement of the Christchurch Supper Club! After listening to Pat Connell share the story of his family’s 229-night stay at Ronald McDonald House South Island, a live fundraising auction took place. A lucky team of eight from

Smith Crane & Construction scored the sought-after auction prize of ‘First Choice’, which entitled them to pick any mystery dinner out of the 34 on offer – and their choice? Luxury accommodation venue The Britten Stables, which had been paired with award-winning Chef de Cuisine Ryan Henley of fine-dining seafood restaurant Pescatore at The George. The Britten Stables’ coowner Isabelle Weston says she was “over the moon” to be approached by Ronald McDonald House to host a mystery dinner for the 2019 Christchurch Supper Club. “We are regularly approached by charities and love to support where we can… particularly charities that focus on children.” She expressed she was proud that The Britten Stables was ‘lucky enough’ to be selected for the ‘First Choice’ auction prize and thinks the venue particularly appeals to people because of its rich and unique history. Whisked away from the pre-dinner function in vintage cars, the eight guests arrived at the magnificent Britten Stables. After they were seated in the sumptuous sitting room, they were served an exclusive seven-dish degustation menu, in line with Pescatore’s typical dining style. Renowned for pushing the culinary boundaries, the contemporary restaurant

produces palate-pleasing plates of unparalleled originality and quality – and this evening was no different. The gastronomic dinner began with the perfect marriage of Wild Venison Tataki and Deer Milk Crisp paired with Black Rice and Soy, followed by the fine flavours of Scampi Sandwich, Kina, Kawa Kawa and Cucumber. Next up was the strikingly sublime combination of Scallop, Nori, Broad Bean Miso and Chive, then an exquisite plate of SlowCooked Egg Yolk, Smoked Potato and Oyster. Guests marvelled in two more decadent dishes of the savoury variety - Salmon Consommé and Nasturtium, and Confit Groper, BBQ Red Cabbage, Fermented Squid, Clam Cream and Tarragon - before their taste buds were treated to the sweet sensation of Rhubarb Granita, Pistachio, Apple, Yogurt and Mint Lemon. The 2019 edition of the Christchurch Supper Club proved to be truly unforgettable evening, garnering an outstanding sum of donations totalling more than $105,000. This heart-warming annual event gives dedicated restaurateurs and top chefs the chance to showcase their skills, promote their establishment and deliver delectable cuisine to the people of Christchurch, knowing their contribution helps to house and support over 1200 families annually. Food for thought The Salvation Army in New Zealand has hit a million dollar milestone, but says its work is far from done. The Foodbank Project, a joint initiative between The Salvation Army, Nelson-based developers Lucid and Countdown supermarkets, has just ticked over $1 million in donations which have provided more than 33,000 food parcels and other essentials for Kiwis in need since it launched in 2015. ono Bell, The Salvation Army’s head of community ministries, says that while a million dollars is an important milestone, the organisation needs more help to get vulnerable people through winter. “We want to thank the New Zealand public for their selfless donations to The Foodbank Project. A million dollars in four years is a huge effort and has meant we have been able to give a hand up to thousands of Kiwis in need. “Unfortunately, the sad reality is that through the colder months we see a consistently high demand for food assistance and our foodbanks across the country will still get stretched very thin.” The Foodbank Project, New

Zealand’s only online foodbank, provides an online solution to top up local foodbanks in addition to Countdown’s purple donation bins in its supermarkets. Donors to The Foodbank Project can choose from a range of products that are critically needed for food parcels and can make oneoff or recurring donations. Countdown then packs and delivers the donated items to the nearest Salvation Army foodbank hub. Jono says that the rising cost of living is the main reason families seek food assistance from The Salvation Army. “I’ve seen first-hand how stressful it is when foodbank shelves are empty,” he says. “The Foodbank Project is an extraordinary resource that provides our hubs with donation continuity and certainty and gives our team a way to create awareness around the items that are urgently needed.” The top donated items include penne pasta, mixed vegetables and women’s sanitary products. The mostneeded items are updated regularly for each local foodbank hub to reflect the need in that foodbank and community. Current items in high demand include onions, potatoes and cheese. The Foodbank Project allows for fresh food to be donated – something that is not possible with traditional donation bins in store.

Master of

Aikmans Bar & Eatery has been joining hands with beverage companies to put on not just good but exquisite epicurean meals and tastings. I sought out the gentleman responsible for these offerings, Jeremy Stevens from Aikmans. Jeremy, you have quite a history is hospitality, tell all! I arrived in Queenstown in early 2009 with the original plan to ride out the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). I quickly realised it wasn’t going to be over quickly and I was running out of savings fast. Queenstown can do that to you! So, I got a trial in a late-night cocktail bar. With zero experience and only being able to recognise one or two brands, I was put to the pressure test – 10 mojitos, five CC & Drys, eight Tanq10 dirty Martinis! I didn’t even know what CC & Dry was! I somehow managed to survive the gruelling 9pm to 5am shift and never expected a call back but I got one and within six months pretty much self-taught myself as much as possible with the power of the

internet and became Bar Manager. Within the year I was nominated for Bartender of the Year and entering cocktail competitions. I made the move to Christchurch four years later to manage Aikmans which was then going through the post-earthquake boom. Within 18 months I was approached by Moët Hennessy for the Upper South Island Account Manager role. I enjoyed a great four years with Moët getting to meet some of the top hospitality operators, not only in New Zealand but Australia and beyond. Not ever planning to leave Moët, the opportunity came up to go back to Aikmans under new ownership with some skin in the game, which I decided to give my best shot.

What’s changed at Aikmans? Almost a year on we have redesigned the interior and image of Aikmans, lifting the quality of service, attention to detail, range of food and offering to create a comfortable, fun environment for both drinkers and diners, with more improvements to come over the next few months to help weatherproof a part of the courtyard for winter. You’ve been very proactive with great food and beverage events like ‘The Tuatara Night’. What’s inspiring you? Consistent activity is key in hospitality. Simply opening the doors doesn’t cut it nowadays. You need to be planning months ahead and make sure your calendar is full to be successful. I think most people are passionate about food and drink so doing paired events with brands or styles of food is a fun way for our guests to try new things. The beverage functions and whisky nights are a fond hangout for the aficionados, how do you keep such a high standard of events going? I have been lucky to be able to partner with people like Andy and Craig from Fresh Choice and Hardeep from Big Daddies Whisky Club to host regular wine and whisky nights. These are always good fun and we have many more coming up. Metropol July 4, 2019 59

Lights Up! By Céline Gibson

Much like fashion, lighting trends often reflect on bygone eras. Here are some styles currently lighting up 2019.

M

id-century Modern reigned from the 1920s to 1970s. The atominfluenced Sputnik chandelier is a fine example of this style. Much in vogue from the 1950s onwards, it’s been updated

through the decades, with finishes such as brushed nickel, brass and gold. It’s a perfect fit with contemporary and transitional décor. Industrial and Retro are definitely here to stay, with

traditional Industrial now sporting an alternative softer version, known as Modern Retro. Popular for kitchen work spaces, above dining areas or as wall lights, Modern Retro gives a unique twist and can even be considered as a statement art piece. Vintage Victorian, as in Edison lightbulbs, just gets better and better! Available in both LED and incandescent form, this is soft retro at its best. An Edison chandelier, or row of Edison connected lights above your work space, will charm for years to come.

Rustic Modern is beautifully captured in the ED Ellen DeGeneres lighting collection. It is influenced by some of Ellen’s favourite, world-renowned artists and features signature details inspired by Ellen’s own treasured pieces throughout her homes. For those not fussed on eras, but who love gentle illumination, Soft Gold, which imitates the soft matte finish of brushed silver and brushed gold, while focusing on the mellowness of gold, is for you. Illuminate your favourite cubby-hole with a soft gold lamp for an extra cosy glow.

What are some of the best ways to create the feeling of warmth? We’ve talked previously about the importance of thermal backing on your drapes. This will make a huge improvement to warmth and your power bill. Using lovely thick drape fabrics, like thicker linens, cottons and velvets, is ideal at this time of year. There is a huge variety of colour and price points available and we can help you narrow the options down. A gas fire adds both warmth and ambience. We can help you find the best installer and talk you through what is needed architecturally. Meanwhile, a quick fix could be painting your walls with warmer tones – Resene Fashion Colours is a great range of interesting options. Soft lighting at night creates a cosy atmosphere, so add candles and soft scents from a diffuser. What are some of your must-have winter warmers – those accessories you can’t live without at this time of the year? An extra soft and luxurious comforter on the end of your bed you can pull up, while cashmere and woollen blankets are great for cuddling up on a winter’s night. We stock Seneca bed linens, so come into the work room and see what we have to offer. What are your favourite colour combos this season? Rust, burnt orange, golds, rich dark greens – all colours that scream depth and cosiness; anything with warm tones. Angelique Armstrong Armstrong Interiors Ltd

Warming up Winter

With temperatures plummeting, we’re craving warmth in the home. So we sought out the inside scoop from awardwinning interior designer Angelique Armstrong from Armstrong Interiors about focus areas for your home to get you through the chilly season.

Why is now the ultimate time to start looking at renovation projects? Whether it is a new deck, interior paint, new drapes, a new modular sofa or designer bespoke furniture, most people would like their renovation projects finished for summer and the Christmas holidays so they can enjoy it with family and friends. When looking at an architectural fit-out like an entertainment wall, new bathroom, ensuite or kitchen, it can take a good couple of months to design and order, and joiners can be booked up months in advance, so it’s a great time to start planning and beat the Christmas rush. The

Celebrating 25 years in business building outstanding houses, DJ Hewitt is thrilled to enter a superlative home in the 2019 Master Builders House of the Year regional competition in the category: House over $2 million. Having taking a sabbatical from House of the Year entries for almost a decade, this stunning entry brings DJ Hewitt to the forefront of competition once again.

A

nchored into the hill high above McCormacks Bay, this is a house with everything: views for inspiration, volcanic rock for grounding, steel for strength, glass for insight and cladding in cedar wood for dreams. Its impeccable dimensions

by O’Neil Architecture draw the gaze and hold it: the flat roof combined with the deep-set eaves, the geometric pattern of the black window framing, the snappy white surround to the second and third stories, volcanic rock cladding the ground floor and

warm cedar above. It makes for a pleasing and harmonious whole: looking at this house could become addictive. The stunning home was a 20-month build that saw the tight-knit team overcome all the challenges associated with the hill site, as well as

everything that mother nature had to throw at them. For Director Daryl Hewitt, the whole project is a stand out, “for its placement on the site, its architectural merit, its design and flow, the materials used - all the boxes are ticked.

Impressive form At three stories it is an impressive home as you look up from the causeway and, once on site, the commanding 220-degree view takes you to another world. The panorama of the Kaikoura ranges around to the Heathcote Valley constantly feeds the soul with a palette of changing light and seasons.

DJ Hewitt has been working with Fox Surveyors for years. “We always get them to set out our homes, they are professional and helpful,” Daryl says. There are four forms of cladding on the house – cedar planking, adjustable steel louvres by LouvreTec, Rockcote, and the local volcanic stone which is continued into landscaping and retaining walls, specially laid to resemble the dry stonewalling technique of interlocking stones, any mortar

used barely visible. The double glazed and laminated aluminium framed windows from the Vantage Metro Series were manufactured and installed by Hagley Windows and Doors, while the spacious deck in Innowood, a sustainable alternative to timber, is protected from prevailing winds by Glassforce structural frameless balustrading held with spider brackets, which is also used for the full height of two levels up the stairway, to stunning effect.

The sleek interior feels bandbox fresh in a neutral palette, with a luxurious range of textures chosen by the owners in conjunction with interior co-ordinator Tara Hewitt. A hotel-style lift to accommodate six is paired with the steel and glass staircase, an art installation in its own right. Systems within the house are all fully automated and can be controlled from a smart phone. The wine cellar occupies the bottom level of the house along with a spacious storage area, accessed through a secret door. Happy owners of the house Russell and Mary love the whole thing. “We love the wine cellar, the stair well, the orientation and layout that takes full advantage of the view.” Russell was hands-on in the wine cellar design. “It is the ideal spot for a wine cellar – it is naturally cool down there but actually it is mainly a whisky display,” Russell says, “not because I am a particular whisky aficionado, it is more in homage to Scottish ancestry”.

Specialist hill and architectural builders, new projects come to DJ Hewitt through word of mouth and architects’ request. “The truth is that houses don’t have to be large to be good. Often these days we are building more compact homes which follow the movement to being very thermally efficient, although all our homes have been insulated to above the code, ever since I’ve been in business.” Constantly busy building dream homes with several architectural projects on the go at any given moment, DJ Hewitt found time to celebrate their 25 years of business with an awards night held at Hagley Windows and Doors with All Blacks motivational speaker Gilbert Enoka addressing attendees. Highly valued subtrades that have worked for DJ Hewitt for 25, 20, 15 or 10 years received appreciation awards. “We are like a big family,” Daryl says. “Everyone knows what to do and we turn out fabulous homes for great clients.”

BREAKING DOWN

MYTHS ABOUT ARCHITECTS Misconceptions about architects and how they work can be off-putting for those weighing up whether to use their services. In reality, as architect Craig South observes, there is nothing to fear and much to be gained from engaging a registered professional.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT - CONCEPT TO COMPLETION

I

t can be easy to forget that people outside your own profession may not have a great understanding of what it is you actually do. Buildings are integral to our lives, yet the role of the architect is not necessarily clear to everyone. In our practice, it is refreshing to meet people who know we can

add value to their project. Architects are registered professionals who must meet stringent academic and professional standards to achieve that status. Achieving that registration takes many years of training and experience. It means architects can be relied upon to deliver

a robust design process informed by an in-depth understanding of client needs and the site. Unfortunately, there is a prevailing myth that architects will simply cost too much and are unaffordable. Of course, working with an architect does involve a cost – often quoted initially as a percentage – but with that will come peace of mind that the design process is in the best possible hands. It is worth remembering that the architect’s fee is just one small component of the total cost, yet is crucial to the project’s ultimate success. Working with an architect is the best way to protect your investment and to secure a result of which everyone will be proud. In the end, architecture is so much more than just shelter or a roof over your head. It should also excite you, inspire you and add pleasure to your life. As architects, this is what we strive to achieve: to design outstanding buildings that function well and that are also uniquely suited to site, context

and, above all, individual client needs. We understand that not everyone has the luxury of a lavish budget. Architects can tailor design to budget and brief to achieve optimal results. The same skills and abilities are brought to bear on smaller scale projects as for larger ones and the same design process used. The point is that scale does not determine the quality of the result, but engaging an architect will enable your project’s potential to be maximised. Architects add the most value when they have a clear understanding of your lifestyle priorities, the spaces that are most important to you and how you like to live. A relatively open brief allows the architect to interpret and express clients’ dreams and aspirations to create balanced and authentic outcomes. Site and environment also inform final concepts, with documentation used to guide construction on site.

In our profession, good communication is pivotal. It informs and underpins the entire design process and involves not just the client and the architect but also the builder/construction team, engineers, suppliers and others

involved with the project. If you’re ready to move beyond the myths, think about starting a conversation with an architect and be prepared to see where your dreams could take you. www.allso.co.nz

Matte Black Rules By Céline Gibson

It’s pretty much a given that the top spot in the neutral colour system has always being held by black. Lily Langtry, Victorian actress and muse of Oscar Wilde, knew that. When her brother died, she donned black, as was customary, but realising it made her look even more beautiful, Lily refused to stop wearing it.

B

lack is king because alongside its compatibility with just about every shade on the colour spectrum, black is, and always will be, undeniably chic. That’s why we love it. However, when it comes to home decoration and décor, we tend to shy away from black, worrying it might be a tad too gloomy and without warmth. But in reality, when it’s done right, black is stunning! How opportune, then, that for those with a desire to dabble with noir, your time is now; yes, the décor must-have colour this year is black – matte black. For those hesitant to fully explore the darker side, try touches of it. For that upcoming dinner party, invest in a set of

matte black cutlery, and place as your centrepiece a matte black candelabra with gold or red candles, then stand back and admire your work. Oh là là! Now you’ve got your confidence, add in a cabinet, a coffee table or pair of feature chairs in matte black, then bring on your bold and brilliant splashes of colour. With dark matte paints now the rage, paint yourself a stunning feature wall then dress your backdrop as it deserves – an heirloom escritoire with an ormolu clock as the focal point, perhaps, or a sprawling rolledarm sofa with a spectacular mirror above, and a statement standard lamp as your final touch of black magic.

For those yearning to venture deep into the matte blacks, here are a few helpful tips:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Mix it Up – no matter your black matte hue, it loves being paired with colour – think gem variations on ruby, sapphire, emerald, amethyst, amber, and definitely, a dash of diamond! Work that Contrast Theme – repeat it on trimmings, photo and mirror frames, drapes and other soft furnishings. Bring on the Texture – for ultimate sumptuousness, layer on the faux furs, fleeces, satins, silks, and plusher-thanplush velvets. Divine! Mirror Magic – mirrors and matte are beautiful opposites - the larger and more ornate the better. This is the one time you certainly can, and should, gild the lily! Don’t Forget the Greenery – a potted palm, a variety of ferns, an indoor hydrangea, or a few headily scented plants, such as gardenias, will make your matte haven heavenly. There, haven’t you done well? Game, set and matte!

For art’s sake Majuba Gallery in Hanmer Springs is a contemporary art space, showcasing a collection created by an array of talented, local artists – whether it is a stunning piece of artwork or beautiful jewellery.

O

ne of its current featured artists is Florence Egasse, who paints a vibrant ensemble of florals, colourful abstracts and contemporary landscapes. With a very much experimental and intuitive body of work, her bold, playful style is constantly evolving. Finding her inspiration from nature, children’s drawings, travels and interior design, each of Flo’s paintings are unique. The Christchurch-based, self-taught artist discovered art in the galleries and museums of Paris as a child, but her interest in painting was truly ignited during her time working in French museums studying the composition and techniques of classic and modern artists. Don’t miss Flo’s beautiful artwork on your next visit to Hanmer Springs! Follow Majuba Gallery on Facebook or phone 03 315 5053.

THE INVESTIGATIVE EXPERTS With a combined 40 years’ experience in all areas of the construction industry, the team at The Property Detectives say it is “really” hard to pull the wool over their eyes when it comes to building.

T

he local company specialises in all property and building

inspections, from pre-sale and pre-purchase to rental WOFs,

as well as plumbing and drainage inspections.

After working right through the Canterbury quakes, the staff, who are all current LBP builders, have extensive knowledge in the areas of EQC repairs. After becoming alarmed at the state of some homes following the earthquakes and not wanting those problems being passed on to the next buyer, they began working to find and remedy issues that have, or could have, arisen from improper repairs or noncompliant works. By utilising a range of hightech systems, such as a thermal imaging device and underfloor critter camera, The Property Detectives can find hidden faults and detect leaks, and their drones can reach even the highest roof. Offering standard, advanced, and specialist inspections, as well as the rental service, The Property Detectives’ team is dedicated to providing accurate, unbiased reports and work alongside homeowners, councils and engineers to get the job done. a noteworthy addition to Zoe is the 10-inch driver’s display – a unique feature available right from entry level. Zoe has a Z.E. 50 battery which takes its range up to 390 kilometres.

With Renault Easy Connect, Zoe responds to our ever-more

LITTLE CAC A SHARP

Citroën has its mojo back. For the last few years, with every new model generation, Citroën has been giving us quirky, stylish and quintessentially French designs. The first to ignite the design and dynamic renaissance for the French company was in my opinion, the C4 Cactus; it just looked like no other vehicle 040719 - Half Pg All-New 210x145mm.pdf 21/06/2019 1:20:39 inMetropol its class. IT’S TIME TO FIND OUT IF IT’S STILL AS SHARP AS THE NAME SUGGESTS.

T

here have been subtle changes to the new Cactus versus the old. Those rubber impact sills or Airbumps are retained, while the front and rear seem to have been considerably influenced by the current gen C3. The wrap-around LED driving lights link up with the Citroën emblem very nicely, as does the continuous glass waistline and floating roof. Plus, those alloy wheels, à la C3, still look great. The C4 Cactus gives buyers the choice of 27 colour combinations. Under the bonnet sits Citroën’s Puretech 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine. With 81kW of grunt and 205Nm of torque, it delivers a very linear power band through the six-speed automatic box, which shifts and responds very well while returning a sipping 5.3L/100km. Inside, it couldn’t be anymore Citroën. Closing the door, via the exquisite leather bag-like door straps, you sit cocooned in your Star Trek-like surroundings. Ahead of you, a thing bar housing a digital speedometer, fuel and temperature gauge looks pretty neat. The glove box is also worth mentioning as it opens out rather than down, and those sticky bumps on the lid will keep your iPad

or other valuables in place. All in all, it’s nice the way Citroën makes their production cars look as concept-like as possible. The C4 Cactus comes with a wide array of safety kit. This includes lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and active safety braking. Plus, along with the usual helping of in-car goodies, the Cactus also comes with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Steering is very communicative and the mechanical bark from that Puretech four pot is a nice reminder that you have machinery working together. Where the Cactus excels more than others in this class is ride comfort. Christchurch is not an easy city to thoroughly test a car’s ride but even the mightiest of potholes felt non-existent. This is down to Citroën’s rather clever “Progressive Hydraulic Cushion” suspension set up. At $35,990, the C4 Cactus is good value, and for those wanting something a bit left field, unique and with a more than adequate feeling of comfort, there is not much out there that will tick those boxes like a C4 Cactus.

CONTENDER A TOP

Make no mistake, the ute segment is thoroughly crammed with choice. Holden’s Colorado has been a strong option for many years, but against its rivals, it fell short. Today, things are different. The Colorado is now sharper, more rugged and stuffed with more tech than ever before. Holden New Zealand allowed this writer to spend a week with one, in all manner of conditions, to see how the range-topping Colorado Z71 can hold its own in the ute war.

tarting in the looks department, the new Colorado Z71 is a handsome truck to say the least. Most utes’ priorities are function over fashion, which is selfexplanatory really. However, it’s nice to see Holden make an effort in giving the refreshed Colorado a clean cut and stylish mug. Available solely as a double cab, the Z71 sports 18-inch Arsenal Grey Alloys, blacked out mirrors and door handles, black roof bars, and a vast array of Z71 badging. Nice. Under the bonnet sits a 2.8-litre Duramax diesel engine mated to a simple six-speed manual or auto box. This means 147kW of grunt is sent to all four wheels, which incidentally is exactly the same as the Ford Ranger Wildtrak. Torque comes in at 500Nm for the automatic too, while the Z71 still returns fuel consumption of 8.7L/100km. For the previous Colorado, the interior was decent at best. However, things have certainly moved up a gear with the Z71. Leather chairs keep you cocooned nicely and there is ample head and legroom. There has also been a revamp of tech including Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Sat Nav and

NOW $144,995

voice activation are also features of the fully loaded Z71’s Mylink infotainment system. Steering is very light with 3.3 turns lock to lock, however the design of the wheel itself takes a bit of getting used to. Plant boot and that Duramax diesel comes into play above 1,500 rpm. Power under control would be a good way to describe the power delivery of the Z71. You can change between twoand four-wheel drive while on the move, though for low range, coming to a complete stop is essential. Leave the bitumen and onto the rough stuff, the Z71 manages itself well. The four-wheel-drive provides an even torque split, leaving you able to devour a great deal of rough stuff at a great rate. The sixspeed-auto box shifts well and with maximum torque coming way low in the rev range, you can keep the power on to great effect. To be honest, I have been rather taken by the Colorado Z71. At $66,990, it undercuts a number of its rivals and don’t think you are getting less of a truck. Basically, if you have the brochure of the Colorado Z71 on your coffee table at home, keep it handy because this ute is not one you should overlook.
