“Our prayers for others flow more easily than those for ourselves. This shows we are made to live by charity.” - C. S. Lewis If you’ve ever seen The Tannery lit up for an event, it’s something to behold. If you haven’t – you’re missing out. With its iconic French tiled floors, mahogany shop fronts, stained glass, bespoke iron arches and translucent roof, the reborn industrial precinct is opulent beauty at its finest. When it’s lined with lights, the elegant 73-metre Victorian atrium is transformed into a stunning oasis, which is precisely how I found it earlier this month when it played prestigious host to the annual Ronald McDonald House Fashion Show 2019. It’s actually the tenth year this beautiful fashion show has been held to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House, which provides short term housing for the families of children being treated in hospital. This year an incredible $76,000 was raised for Ronald McDonald House. While the event itself, the incredible support that has been garnered for it, the amazing attendance, the beautiful venue and exquisite fashion on display are all singularly impressive, what I consider ABC AUDITED perhaps even more beautiful is the passion and drive of the people behind it. We all know that life is what you make of it and when people are passionate about what they do, incredible things can happen. Because as we’ve seen over and over again in the past few weeks right here in our city, is that love really canAUDITED move mountains.

Easter’s

never been sweeter Nothing says kindness like gifting to those in need, particularly during holiday seasons like Easter. And with winter on our doorstep, there’s every reason to get stuck into Christchurch Methodist Mission’s (CMM) fundraising campaign, My Easter Egg Hunt.

he CMM is one of Christchurch’s largest social service agencies and this holiday it’s encouraging businesses and individuals to make a difference by hosting their own special Easter egg hunt to help raise funds for families impacted by domestic violence. Hunts can run anytime between 13 and 28 April. Easter has never been sweeter, particularly with Trade Aid jumping on the band wagon and providing organic, fair trade chocolate which will be poured into egg moulds by renowned chocolatiers She Universe. Round up your friends and family or make a work event out of it – anyone can host a hunt at any venue! Interested? Simply register your hunt online at http://bit.ly/ myeasteregghunt2019, buy a batch of delectable eggs, hide them around your garden, workplace or favourite recreational spot and request that all attendees donate to the CMM. Have fun this season by throwing your own Easter egg hunt and guiltlessly indulge in dreamy chocolate to your heart’s delight! As CMM Executive Director Jill Hawkey says, “All calories are negated because it’s for a good cause”.

that Jason Gunn is turning his charitable hand to supporting Cholmondely Childrens Centre. We catch up with the son of a Gunn about his life in the limelight.

You have recently added ‘tech designer’ to your list of credentials, how did this come about? The folk at Slingshot came to me with this amazing opportunity to design a modem – as in... the outside of the modem... I have no idea what goes on inside. So I got together with a professional designer (my original stick drawings were never gonna cut it) and we came up with my ‘piece of art’ which is all about ‘Staying Connected’ with friends and whanau. Cholmondeley is a fantastic charity to align yourself with, why did you choose this one? Cholmondeley is a magical place that does so much good for families in Canterbury. When things are tough at home, Cholmondeley allows kids to stay for a while so things can settle down and the kids can return to a happy home. They help families from all over Canterbury – the only problem is not enough of us know about Cholmondeley and they need our support to support these families. How does it feel to get the opportunity to use your profile to support such good causes? What’s the point of having any sort of ‘profile’ if you don’t do good with it? I see so many people out there trying to push their brand and profile just so they can get more free stuff and more money. The greatest feeling is giving back to others. And by giving to Cholmondeley you are giving to so many others. You’ve also recently started a campaign to get Kiwi icon Thingee back on TV. It’s been 25 years, how much do you miss him? I can’t start to explain how much I miss him. I am so over what so much of TV is about. All this unscripted reality is so ridiculously scripted and the furthest thing from reality. It dumbs us down! Bringing Thingee back is all about clever, heartfelt, light-hearted entertainment that takes us back to simple times when we lived in the now a lot more.

You are one of the most recognised faces on New Zealand television. Why do you think New Zealand has connected so strongly with you? Those are very kind words. I think I’ve just been me. I haven’t tried to be someone else. I don’t think I’m special in any way. I guess I connect well with people – I enjoy enabling others to shine. I remember meeting a few big egos early on and thinking I never want to be like that. I’ve tried to stay relatable and I’m just like those people that watch me – I get so bloody excited if I meet someone actually famous and there’s always a drama going on somewhere in my life. As a parent there’s always a lot of balls in the air and like all parents you just want to spend as much time with your kids as you can. Family comes first. It’s heading up to a year in April since you were joined by Jay-Jay in the afternoons from 3-7pm on MoreFM and it’s an amazing partnership! How has it been going? JayJay is an incredible broadcaster. But more so she is amazing with her listeners and fans. When you walk down the street people come up to her all the time and she always stops to chat and makes them feel important. That’s a real gift. She’s very patient with my stories too and puts up with my hatred towards reality TV very well! What have been some of your biggest standout career highlights? I’ve been lucky enough to meet some well-known people – Prince Charles and Michael J Fox were highlights. I’ve travelled to some amazing places – we’ve broadcast live from Stewart Island, Universal Studios and Tokyo... But the real highlight is the New Zealanders I’ve met. The everyday people like me who just love living here and have a story to tell. And it’s a bloody good story! The visits to schools and I think the visits to hospitals are the two biggest highlights; being able to use your so called ‘profile’ for good. And trust me... things are very quickly put into respective when you are sitting with children in hospital! What has the rest of 2019 got in store for you? I am so excited to launch my new business www. jasegunn.com. I’ve talked about it for years and now I’m doing it. I want to teach others how to be at their best in front of an audience on stage, on camera and online. I’ve managed to somehow build a career on just saying a few words... and now I want to enable others to do the same. Email me! jase@jasegunn.com.

A dazzling farewell Just as much of a dazzling superstar now as he was back in his prime in the 70s, Sir Elton John is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest music legends.

N

ow he is retiring from life on the road in the name of spending more quality time with his partner and two children – but before he makes his final exit, he wants to go out with a bang. From pub performer to singer, songwriter, pianist, composer and all-round rock icon, Elton John has touched the hearts and ears of almost every pop and rock fan. Just shy of half a century since his first concert on New Zealand soil, he will bring his mammoth final tour Farewell Yellow Brick Road to our shores next February. John is set to perform four star-studded performances in Auckland, Hawke’s Bay and

Dunedin, complete with brand new stage production and a glamorous tour wardrobe designed by the famed highend clothing brand Gucci. The four performances will be only a few of 300 concerts in total across five continents. He’ll be joined by longstanding band members Nigel Olsson, Davey Johnstone, Ray Cooper, Matt Bissonette, John Mahon and Kim Bullard for a world tour that’s bigger than ever before. The Farewell Yellow Brick Road world tour commences in 2021 and alas, we will wave goodbye to Elton John’s career with 70s nostalgia in our hearts and the soundtrack to ‘Saturday Night’s Alright’ stuck in our heads.

Business Stars

of the future By Céline Gibson

It was very much a red carpeted affair on Tuesday 11 March when a crowd of bright young things gathered to hear who would be announced winner of the Big Break Award for 2018-19 from the Dream Believe Succeed Foundation.

T

he evening began with last year’s winner, Oliver Hunt, speaking of how the award had significantly contributed to the growth of his company, Medsalv, followed by Emily Hazelwood, founder of the Romer app, who spoke on how much she’s valued the mentoring support of those in the local community in helping her realise her dream of owning her own company. The final speaker was Steve Brooks, the man behind Dream Believe Succeed, who set up the award to raise awareness and develop an entrepreneurial spirit in our region’s youth. Steve spoke of how the foundation is achieving what it set out to do – to cultivate a more nurturing community for young

entrepreneurs of Canterbury. Steve then announced that Chelsea Aitken and Millie Morgan were this year’s Big Break Award winners. New Zealand and Beyond is their business venture; the concept behind it is to create a united storefront for New Zealand brands in the Chinese E-commerce market. Chelsea and Millie’s prize includes mentoring and support services from companies such as Deloitte, Lane Neave, Sticky Thinking, Sherpa Insurance, Happy Hire and more, plus a cash prize of $20,000 to get their business venture off the ground. Applications for next year’s award open in September. For more information on the foundation, visit www.dreambelievesucceed.co.nz.

THE SKI TUNING MACHINE MARKS A SIGNIFICANT $200,000 INVESTMENT IN THE CANTERBURY SKI SCENE

SHARPEN UP THIS SKI SEASON WITH THE LATEST TECH

The days are getting shorter, summer has slipped away and the workshop at SnowRide Sports is already hummin’ in anticipation of the upcoming 2019 ski season.

O

wner Richard Naylor has over 35 years of ski tuning under his belt, 13

of them from his Lincoln Road based ski shop. In December 2018, the shop

took delivery of New Zealand’s first Montana Crystal ONE automated ski tuning machine, which marks a significant $200,000 investment in the Canterbury ski scene. Known for its ability to produce the highest quality ski tune available, the Crystal ONE incorporates leading technology to create a level of tuning precision not possible by hand. It carries on the tradition of performance, quality and innovation that the brand Montana is known for internationally.

Using the brand’s GRIPtech system, the Crystal ONE edge grinds in a vertical direction, which results in the most precise, sharp and long-lasting race edge possible, without creating grooves. It combines this with the innovative 8-fold VAR10 structures for base grinding, which allows a user to adapt the gliding characteristics of a ski base to all conditions, essential in the sometimes variable Canterbury conditions. Added to the mix is Montana’s built in tech tuning (HTT) system, which allows an operator to create and polish bevelling angles with an unprecedented degree of precision. The end result is a ski tune that is long lasting, precise and of a quality unparalleled in New Zealand. For Richard, the adoption of Crystal ONE was a no brainer. “We have always prided ourselves on our ability to get customers’ gear performing its absolute best and by adopting Crystal ONE, we are able to offer the highest quality ski tune possible. It’s about giving our customers the best ride, no matter what the conditions.” Not convinced! SnowRide Sports’ workshop offers Crystal ONE tunes from just $60, so you can book in now and see the results for yourself. Now, all we need is the snow.

A DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION Ricoh is a market leader in digital signage and Shake Shed recently tasked the company with assisting them with the relaunch of their business.

S

hake Shed’s transformation has been a phenomenal success due to technological advantages such as the screen wall; the screens can be linked together to display corresponding images. The advantage in using all screens uniformly as a screen wall is effectiveness of communication, as well as the ability to change the screen based on the weather. For Shake Shed, sunny days will feature delicious fresh ice cream while cold days will feature hot dogs and fries. Different channels can also be created so your store in Auckland with sunny weather can run certain products, while

your Christchurch store with its stormy weather can run other options. Everything can be controlled from a central point which can see a signage change occur in five minutes. Ricoh’s platform will save time on approval and courier, with savings on the cost on printing and design. You simply update online and change is instantaneous. The next advance in this technology coming soon is touch-screen games, linking photo promos to social media, facial recognition to inform the sales assistant of your last order or detect a frowning face and quickly display a ‘smile - you’ll get 20 percent off today’ message. Humorous interactions such as these generate more foot traffic to your store and generate more business. Additional information

could lead to statistical analyses such as what percentage of your customers are male or female, the average age of your customers, interactive cake design - build it on the touch screen. The technology also reacts to a change of market and can advertise one day specials. Ricoh aims to be as future-proof and as interactive as possible. If you are ever looking into digital signage, large video walls, outdoor LEDs, transparencies or OLED, everything Ricoh turns its commercial hand to is customisable – it’s never a one size fits all approach. The company also makes things affordable by leasing its products. This makes it easier and more cost effective for you to keep up to play with the latest technology, as it changes so quickly. What you’re after today won’t be what you’re after in 36 months’ time. For more information, contact Pete today on poconnor@ricoh.co.nz.

To this day, beauty, adventure and hospitality are at the heart of this quaint coastal village. Located on the south-east side of the deep, sheltered Akaroa Harbour, the charming township of Akaroa has a special point of difference – it was the only French settlement in New Zealand. That’s not where beauty ends. With historic buildings, magnificent harbour and passion for fine

fashion BEC & BRIDGE CHECK YOU LATER DRESS

Check it out! By Tracey Edwardes

Checks are still hot property in our wardrobes! They are a geometrically gorgeous fashion feature that’s having a long run on the catwalks. Whether it’s retro, timeless, wild ‘n’ crazy – it’s hip to be square.

B

lack and white checks are a 90s comeback that’s either cute or classic depending on how you wear them - whether it’s a long floaty off-the-shoulder dress as seen by Oscar de la Renta, or a cute crop top. Chic and classy or kooky and creative, checks draw in the eye either way – and make an outfit look finished and purposeful. Celebrities are all doing their own renditions to get attention. And with the flexibility to wear it in infinitive ways – everyone is a follower of their own fashion style. Checked blazers and trousers in winter-weight fabrics will look sassy and swish this season. Over-sized coats and double-breasted

blazers are a classic design of a checked past, but mixing them with florals and asymmetric-cut tops will make this time round unique. Tartans can go bold and bright. Mix them. Clash them. Green tops with red bottoms perhaps - it definitely doesn’t have to be a check mate. Deep purple and bright yellow, as seen by Versace, is really opulent and out-there. Checks graduating in size are fun visual feasts. Smaller, soft-hue checks, cinched in with a belt is pure demure couture - perfect for the boardroom - whereas larger prints can disguise flaws and take centre stage. Plaid well-cut pants could even be more flattering than your favourite plain pair this season.

international success Local lad’s

Portfolio Model Agency’s Jordan Barron has a whirlwind international career. However, the down to earth 25-year-old with the striking looks still calls Christchurch home.

riginally from Cambridgeshire UK, he moved here when he was 12. After finishing St Andrews College, Jordan was discovered by a modelling agency at Merivale’s Aikmans Bar. And next minute he had a 10-page Remix magazine shoot, and then modelled the Zambesi campaign, leading to experiences overseas. He completed his degree in finance, accounting and commercial law, despite being asked to go to New York. Four years in Europe and Australia followed, with numerous events and working for brands such as Louis Vuitton and Harvey Nicholls in London, and Hugo Boss and Armani in Sydney, before returning home. “Fashion has been one interest, but I have always been interested in the person behind the clothes. Being in my 20s, my taste will evolve and change as I grow. I believe everyone’s style is a measure of someone’s story, values and confidence.” He says modelling comes with tension, and when you are young it is often more difficult to stay true to who you are. “Continuing to mature and learn about having good people around me will only help me understand the modelling landscape better. It’s a bit like the plains of Africa. In serving that landscape you deal with a lot of rejection and opportunities. This teaches me so much more about who I am; some of my greatest life lessons have come from those.” Jordan’s friends didn’t understand modelling initially. “The great thing about my close friends and family is that they have kept me grounded. The funniest story was when my friend went to kiss a new girlfriend, he looked up, and there was a poster of me on her wall and his date didn’t go too well! “I’m a big believer in as we move through life our choices shape who we are. I’ve learnt more about that in the last year especially. I don’t see myself as a role model – we all have a story which informs someone else’s story. I always have hope. We can all help someone or something else as we move through life. “I’ve always been proud to be a Kiwi – it’s been great to come home after a long stint away.”

Mindful Beauty W

At Earth Organic Hairdressing, mindfulness and beauty are inseparable. Their ethos is outwardlooking and concerns the salon’s global impact on the environment and treatment of animals. However, when you walk through the salon doors, you know you’ll get that one-on-one attention from your hairstylist you’ve always wanted.

ith biodegradable packaging, plantbased and crueltyfree hair products, you might think that this salon is too focused on the big picture to notice your specific needs. On the contrary, intentionality saturates Earth Organic Hairdressing. When you arrive for your free consultation, your stylist will discuss your unique hair

needs and find natural and organic solutions for you. The stylist you meet at your consultation is the same stylist who will guide you to your desired result - no rush, no surprises, just a naturally beautiful you. Traci Aylmer, salon owner and stylist, loves to share new natural, organic and cruelty-free products with her clients. Along those lines, Traci affirms, “People trust their hairstylist. I’ve tried everything we sell at the salon, so when you spend ages trying to find a product that works it’s nice to spread the word.” Traci and her team of stylists are excited to share a new skincare line which shares the same values – and as a bonus, it’s made in New Zealand! Non-surgical

he new kid on the block is the MINT Thread Lift®. Unlike the invasive permanent threads of the past, the MINT Lift® is a minimally invasive procedure that uses absorbable threads to redefine and restore lost elasticity and volume in the face. It does two things; firstly, the threads cause tension in the skin giving an immediate lifting effect. Secondly, they stimulate the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid which creates firmer skin. While results can be seen immediately, improvements continue with full results seen after 6-12 weeks and lasting around 12 months. The treatment is great for men and women who are showing signs of aging but do not want to undergo a surgical face lift. Put simply, it’s a non-surgical facelift that can create beautiful, natural looking results. If it is natural you are seeking, then nothing could be more so than using your own platelets to accelerate tissue regeneration and repair. This is where PRP comes in. Standing for Platelet Rich Plasma, PRP involves taking a sample of your blood, concentrating the platelets from that sample and reinjecting those concentrated platelets back into the body. The platelets contain numerous growth factors which will stimulate collagen synthesis and skin rejuvenation. It is great for tired and dry skin, skin laxity, wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes, and overall texture and tone improvement. The usually difficult to treat areas such as neck and décolletage do particularly well with this treatment. Face Value uses the RegenLab PRP system which offers the Cellular Matrix option of combining hyaluronic acid with the platelets to give added immediate hydration. Both the MINT Lift® and PRP are fabulous options for rejuvenating the face and neck, and can be used in conjunction with dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle treatments and skin needling to keep you looking your best, at any age. Phone 03 363 8810 to book an initial consultation with Dr Frost at no charge.

She will talk through your 10-15 most worn pieces and your 10-15 least worn pieces, to discuss the ‘why’, then she moves onto a colour analysis, before looking at your body shape, style mentors, lifestyle (that means she’s not suggesting you wear 4-inch stilettos to wrangle your toddlers), goals and budget. “It’s about working out what works for you and what gaps there are in your wardrobe.” Bibi is a stylist so not surprisingly she’s all about colour. So how does the Kiwi uniform of black on black fit in? “I love black, but I think it’s an easy way out,” Bibi says. “There’s so much we can do with colour, but the right colour for you is critical. “The right colour can completely change your face. It can add a flush to your cheeks and a sparkle in your eyes.” When you know the colour palette for you, it enables you to develop a base range of clothing; 30-40 essential items that never go out of fashion. This becomes a framework you can build on by adding and subtracting a few statement pieces each season. Other top tips for your capsule collection include choosing classic shapes and patterns that will stand the test of time; opting for high-quality fabrics that will stand being worn to death, and dressing for your body shape so you look and feel your very best. “It can be easy to get stuck in a rut,” Bibi says, “And now’s the time to get out of it!” So what will make the Kondo for you this sartorial season?

M

arie Kondo’s groundbreaking approach to decluttering was first outlined in her New York Times best-selling guidebook, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up; a philosophy which very quickly swept through our homes and into our wardrobes where women the world over have been finding themselves detoxing their wardrobes, removing everything that no longer “sparks joy” - Kondo’s trademark phrase. For Cantabrians that don’t have the guiding hand of Kondo herself to navigate the nuances of the closet detox, that role is filled passionately by Bibi Maber from Studio Bibi, a body positive personal stylist who is all about discovering and embracing your personal style. “Closet detoxes are becoming more popular – and women are grateful for it!” Bibi says. You know those pants you purchased on sale that didn’t fit then but ‘will one day’ you’re sure of it. Perhaps it’s the dress – tags still attached – that you nabbed on your way past the store, but you’ve never worn because you’re just not built like the mannequin you saw it on. Or maybe it’s that cute top that washes you out so much everyone asks if you’re feeling OK. Bibi prefers to take a more strategic approach to adding to your wardrobe, one that will cull the clutter, save money and create more outfit options than you ever thought possible.

In the trenches By Tracey Edwardes

Trench coats have lasted the decades, so how are they being reimagined this year?

“What is a Reformer Anyway?”

A Reformer is a resistance based machine. Exercises are done lying down, sitting, standing, pulling straps, pushing against the foot-bar and all types of variations thereof. Pilates offers plenty of benefits to your body, no matter your fitness background. You can expect to experience...

T

he trench coat marches through the eras – a staple as much intrenched in our wardrobes as the little black dress. Ever since the Hollywood styles of Marleen Deitrich, it’s been the cover up with the allure – the trademark of mystery and femininity. The coat can be dressed up or down, covering absolutely any attire underneath, from the latest fishnets to ripped jeans. First glimpses of the trench coat began with British and French army soldiers, then fashion houses such as Burberry created a trend, the company’s namesake tartan, lining its latest styles. Fashionistas now love reinventing this classic. Big balloon sleeves add comfortable slouchy style. Oversizing this already oversized item is hot. This will

With slow, precise movement and breath control, Pilates is a full-body exercise method which will help you do everything better - Jodi Koster (founder and owner of Core Pilates and Mind) feel somewhat like cuddling up in a duvet when winter hits. However, sophisticated fitting lines are just as current, as is more unexpected shaping. Short and doublebreasted is also a sleek way to wear one. Traditionally classic in creamy beige or classy black, there is also dusky flesh pink – a demure shade to flaunt a swishing hemline. Silver-grey with metallic buttons is cool and lime green has even been seen. Leather, including vegan, and bright red in PVC are some new options to the traditional heavy duty cottons. The trench traditionally grazes just above the ankles, but any length goes this time round. The traditional armour of belts, straps, epaulets, pockets and statement buttons all add interest and purpose.

Yoga THERAPY TRAINING

As part of its dedication to healing and safe yoga practice, Flow Hot Yoga is now offering an intensive 100-hour course of Hansa Yoga Therapy Training with global yoga expert Vincent Bolletta.

S

o what exactly is yoga therapy and how is it different from regular yoga practice? Yoga therapy utilises poses, breathing techniques and meditation to benefit and improve overall health. While any type of yoga can bring health benefits, yoga therapy works at a deeper, more involved level to support the practitioner and teacher, more than basic yoga training does. It can be used to add to a teacher’s toolkit but even those with no yoga

training can experience its benefits. It can also be used as another skillset for those already working in the health sector, such as massage and occupational therapists, who will be able to apply the principals of yoga therapy in their day-to-day work. New yoga teachers will find Hansa Yoga Therapy training a great way to support their students and it acts as a bridge to other areas of practice such as meditation, Yoga Nidra, Yoga Asana and anything from Ashtanga, Vinyasa to Kundalini.

To start your journey with Hansa Yoga Therapy, enrol now for the 100-hour training in 2019. Session times available are Friday 19 July to Wednesday 24 July and Saturday 27 July to Wednesday 31 July. The cost is $1800 per 100 hours (early bird $1500 by 1 June), held at The Vineyard at Rossendale Event Centre, 100 Old Tai Tapu Road, Halswell. Creating

Beautiful Brides

In a beautiful, calm oasis on busy Papanui Road, brides and bridal parties can be pampered from tip to toe by the expert team at LaBella Nails and Lashes.

O

ffering a group booking option for up to 12 people, owner Bella Tran recommends coming in two to three days before the wedding to allow for any touch-up appointments. “We understand it’s a very important day and we want to make it perfect for the bride.” With a strong focus on using organic, vegan and toxin-free products, a lovely range of different manicure and pedicure options are available. LaBella is Canterbury’s only professional salon that’s trained and authorised for the popular SNS nail system, a healthier alternative to acrylic, with 500 powder-coated shades to choose from. “We also have over 200 colours in our gel collection and 200 in standard polish,”

Bella says. “Nude is the most popular choice for brides and we have many beautiful shades.” Two exciting new treatments have recently been added to the list of beauty services – lash lifts and henna brows. Perfect for brides, a lashlift is a popular 45-minute treatment that creates a gorgeous natural curve to open up the eyes, lasting for 6-8 weeks. The treatment is ideal for those with straight lashes or who are allergic to the glue used in lash extensions. The new generation henna brow provides the same effect as eyebrow tattooing and uses 100 percent natural ingredients that also stimulates hair growth – and lasts up to three weeks. apprenticeship at iconic firm Austin Brown and her 35 years in the trade includes nine years specialising in men’s bespoke suiting where she made it her business to know everything in tailoring. Second generation in the trade, Megan’s mother was a sewing teacher and tailoress, and Megan was born to follow in her footsteps. “I just love it and it’s all I know,” she says. Altering men’s tailoring is a particular favourite, “but I enjoy alterations for both men and women”. Megan loves the pure satisfaction on people’s faces when they see themselves in a piece that fits well. “They arrive in despair sometimes and leave feeling a million dollars when they are fitted correctly.” While New Zealand’s pre-eminent men’s suiting company relies on Megan for their alterations, there is nothing she won’t turn her hand to – cushion covers, zips, turning up hems and even sewing on buttons if you just can’t bear to. “I just love what I do. ‘sex ed’ gaps Bridging

Is ‘sex ed’ failing the #metoo generation? It’s a question that is being asked by a Canterbury education expert.

N

avigating contemporary gender issues is already complicated for our young people and New Zealand’s traditional sexuality education is not keeping up, according to University of Canterbury Associate Professor Kathleen Quinlivan. Gender fluidity, consent, exposure to pornography, sexual violence and the power dynamics behind the #metoo movement are some of the issues Associate Professor Quinlivan explores in her new book Exploring Contemporary Issues in Sexuality Education with Young People (Palgrave).

“One of the main issues is this huge slippage between what young people need and what they are getting. We are in the era of #metoo, sexual harassment, sex and gender politics and those are things that young people really want to know about, but they are often not areas that teachers and parents are comfortable going into,” she says. The internationally recognised researcher of school-based sexuality education says a limited health and risk focus of sexuality education lingers. The fact that the word ‘pleasure’ was removed from the most recent

(2015) Ministry of Education sexuality education guidelines is typical of a cautious official approach, she says. Meanwhile, young people are taking matters in to their own hands, Associate Professor Quinlivan says. “There are feminist groups in schools and there are queer-straight alliance groups in schools that have strong social justice orientations, combatting discrimination and talking about pleasure – there are a lot of informal things happening that are not visible in the formal arena.” The gaps can be bridged, she says. In fact, Associate Professor Quinlivan advocates for teachers to listen to young people’s lived experiences and venture beyond traditional boundaries. “It is not easy teaching these things. The Ministry of Education is risk averse and doesn’t provide support for professional development, plus the Sexuality Education guidelines are not compulsory – in fact schools didn’t even receive a hard copy of them,” she says. “Policies aside, the relationship with students is the most important thing for teachers to develop and that takes time. You have to

be someone who is really interested in exploring the issues that young people are dealing with.” The possibilities for change are exciting, she says. “The rise of the #metoo movement has been huge – there has been a tidal shift. There is a new feminism where younger women are starting to stand up and talk about the things they experience. Through popular culture, in response to genderbased harassment, sexual diversity and the rise of #metoo, there is a renewed interest in gender activism – it is a bit of a moment really!” The book was launched in New Zealand on 20 February to coincide with a symposium for academics and teachers at UC’s College of Education, Health and Human Development, titled Coming In Slantways: Sexuality Education Otherwise. Presentations and workshops enabled participants to explore and expand their practice, bringing the fruits of research to both educators and their students. Cut through the legal jargon By Kannangara Thomson Partner Brent Selwyn

At Kannangara Thomson we have a point of difference which not all law firms have in that as many as nine different languages are spoken in our offices. As a firm we also have a by-line “we speak your language” which is a play on words in as much as it signifies the point of difference that there are a number of different language speakers at Kannangara Thomson but also, it speaks to the fact that as a law firm our aim is to try to cut through all the legal jargon and explain matters to our clients in plain English.

S

ome of the languages spoken at Kannangara Thomson include Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, Afrikaans, Malay, Sinhalese, Tamil, Arabic and of course English. As a firm we are delighted to celebrate the cultural diversity of the people who make up our thirty strong contingent of lawyers and legal assistants. The range of services provided within the firm varies from the purchase of residential property, investment property, commercial property, business sales and purchases, family trusts, wills, enduring powers of attorney and with a particular focus on immigration. We have most areas of law covered and anything we cannot assist with we will always recommend to someone

appropriate to provide assistance to our client. We have modern premises at 575 Wairakei Road in Burnside and one feature which clients dealing with our firm love is the easy access to car parking which can be a major issue for our central city colleagues. One of our number of bilingual lawyers is Sandra Iskander who was born in Egypt and came to New Zealand with her family as a child. Sandra is fluent in both English and Arabic. In the immediate aftermath of the horrific events at the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Mosque in Christchurch on Friday 15 March 2019, with the full support of the partners, Sandra volunteered to give her time in the week beginning Monday 18

March at both the Hagley Community Centre and the Christchurch hospital to help those affected by this terrible tragedy in any practical way possible. As a firm we were pleased to be one of the first law firms to offer pro bono services to any of the Christchurch Muslim community who had family or friends killed or injured in the attacks on the two Mosques. This offer remains open and Sandra along with a number of other lawyers in our office have registered their details with the Canterbury District Law Society as being available to assist any affected members of the Christchurch Muslim community with Legal Services, initially free of any charge.

Ashburton’s Lake Hood is the picturesque location for a run with heart – both figuratively and literally.

O

ne of several events across New Zealand supporting the Heart Foundation, the Jennian Homes Mother’s Day

Fun Run/Walk returns this year on Sunday 12 May 2019! Heart disease is New Zealand’s single biggest killer,

claiming the lives of one New Zealander every 90 minutes. The fact that this event corresponds with Mother’s Day is not lost on organisers, with heart disease claiming the lives of more than 3000 women every year. Jennian Homes has been a loyal supporter of the Heart Foundation for almost a decade, in the fight to stop all people in New Zealand dying prematurely from heart disease and to enable those with heart disease to live full lives.

Now in its eighth year, the run is offering families across the country the chance to have fun on Mother’s Day, get active and support the Heart Foundation along the way. The event will start at 9am on Sunday 12 May and entries include a free t-shirt for each attendee (sizes available will be processed on a first-come, firstserved basis and while stocks last). t Ilam Homestead, once home to the Rector of the University of Canterbury, you will find mind, heart and soul wrapped in with the beauty and history of the very fabric of this gracious historic homestead. General Manager Glenda Clark says, “With its sweeping driveway, imposing entranceway, glorious panelling, highceilinged rooms and open fireplaces, it is a glorious setting for weddings and events”. The lush and historic gardens that frame the house are haloed by the upper reaches of the Avon River, spanned by a series of picturesque wooden bridges ideal for photos. “Our garden is so camera-friendly, and there are multiple ceremony sites to choose from inside

and outside,” Glenda says. “Spring and summer are particularly luscious when the renowned azalea and rhododendron garden is in full bloom.” There has been an Ilam Homestead here since 1852 and this building which replaced the original in 1910 has been hosting weddings for 40 years. “We can seat up to 110 in our upstairs room, and we have smaller rooms too,” Glenda says. This gorgeous and gracious vintage home and garden is the perfect place for all events. “Our beautiful rimu and brass bar is an ideal place for post-ceremony drinks before heading upstairs for dinner. We have plenty of beverage options and three caterers to choose from – we cater for almost every budget.”

Saints of Tai Tapu is a superb wedding and event venue steeped in the local community, and history, of the Tai Tapu area.

B

uilt in 1881, the former Methodist Church has undergone many transformations in its 138year story. When Sven Berger drove past it in 2001 he was disappointed to see a “SOLD” sign in front of it. A year later,

after he had given up ideas of buying it, the church was for sale again, and this time he snapped it up. Sven and his wife Heather, together with their children, spent many, many nights at the dinner table discussing designs,

down to the smallest detail, that would eventually result in this local icon’s latest iteration. The result is simply spectacular. Lovingly and carefully restored, it is a beautiful, serene place, faithful to the original Gothic style, pieced together using some invaluable pieces of various heritage sites lost in the earthquakes. “I wanted to bring this building back to its glory days,” Sven says, “functioning in a different way, but something the people in the community could be proud of.” In small ways, the community has contributed to the restoration of the church. With ideas and donations of meaningful items, such as books, photos, and, notably, the plinth in the courtyard, the locals have watched, and been part of the journey of bringing back to life this unique sanctuary. “People like the flow and the symmetry,” Heather says. “There’s a simplicity about the design that works really well.” One of its most popular functions is as a wedding venue. Brides, grooms, and their families appreciate being part of the church’s history. For smaller, intimate weddings of up to 35 people, it is the perfect backdrop to such a romantic endeavour. With high quality accommodation, Saints of Tai Tapu is an ideal space to stay and prepare for your wedding. With four spacious bedrooms, two with en suite, there is plenty of room to relax while hair and makeup is done, and with drinks and nibbles provided for up to

eight people. Saints of Tai Tapu is a highly sought after wedding venue, especially as a winter wedding setting. With beautiful outside spaces for the ceremony, reception and photos in warmer weather, and an equally stunning interior backdrop, including the exquisite staircase, mezzanine lounge, and leadlight stain-glassed windows, all spaces centrally heated, inclement weather need not be a worry. In addition to the idyllic setting, Saints has access to a stable of horses and a magnificent dark blue and gold gilt carriage which can be used in photos. Everything can also be used as a photo-only setting. With a list of preferred brand services, including White Tie Catering, and florists, makeup artists and photographers, Sven and Heather have created a wonderful wedding place, sure to meet every expectation with their meticulous attention to detail, both in the restoration of their very special venue, and their friendly and thoroughly professional service. Saints of Tai Tapu is really much more than just a wedding venue. It is an integral part of the local history and landscape; it is the culmination of Sven and Heather’s hard work, and their emotional journey. They invite brides and grooms to also be a part of that journey. Their boutique luxury retreat will make your day even more special. Contact Heather at www.saintstaitapu.co.nz. to fashion Adding fun

A new collection is arriving at Working Style, featuring strong textures matched with beautiful colourways: chocolates, green and plums, to complement those core colours of blue and grey.

“T

hey’re really easy colours to wear – not fussy, but interesting,” Creative Director Karl Clausen says. “This season everything is a little softer, more understated. So we’ve taken all that corporate edge of our clothing and made it a bit more fun. It is stylish and there is a focus on interesting details, easy to pair with what you already have in your wardrobe.” At Working Style many of

the pieces are interchangeable and easy to dress up or down. Karl says it is easy to give those items a whole new look and feel depending on what they’re paired with. You can adapt them to your environment or to the occasion. “There is definite shift in how men are wearing formal wear and how formal wear is defined,” Karl says. “A suit and a jacket doesn’t have to look corporate or overtly formal – you should be able to wear your formal wear

on a variety of occasions with the appropriate accessories.” The fabrications always offer a dynamic, polished appearance if it’s required however, a lot of men want something a bit more understated and this season the fabrications provide an opportunity for guys to wear tailoring that’s softer and adaptable to a more informal way of dressing. “This season the flannel suits stand out for me,” Karl says. “I love their ability to be worn as separates; the trousers look great with a jersey; the jackets look great with a pair of jeans. They look awesome as a suit together. It just adds so much breadth to your wardrobe.” Karl is from Christchurch

originally and opened Working Style in Christchurch after meeting Working Style founder Chris Dobbs. The store began in Columbo Street, then moved to Merivale and grew into what it is now. After five years, Karl spent another four years in London before coming back to New Zealand to rejoin Working Style as its Creative Director. Karl loves his involvement with the evolution of Working Style and playing an intricate role within that. “With every new collection the quality is never compromised. We are always in search of the finest fabrications and the best possible make. Our standards in service and attention to detail are something we pride ourselves on, along with our ability to appreciate our clients.” Find Working Style in its distinctive building on the corner of Papanui Road and Murray Place, at 242 Papanui Road, Merivale. Something Blue

We’ve long tokenised ‘something blue’ when it comes to our wedding day, so it’s hardly a groundbreaking colour combination. But it seems that little something blue is now playing more of a starring role when it comes to the big day.

B

ecause, not only has this match made in matrimonial heaven marched its way down the aisle, but it’s equally marched its way into our hearts. In fact, not only are bridesmaids donning this clever colour in 2019, but brides themselves are increasingly making waves in this cool hue. There are plenty of options when it comes to finding the perfect partner for this stylish shade. Navy blue is a romantic partnership with dusty rose; soft French blue pairs prettily with white;

midnight blue looks regal with gold; navy blue and burgundy are deep and delicious; navy blue and sunflower yellow contrast beautifully; or why not try mixing a range of blues throughout your wedding accessories? Often associated with depth and stability, blue symbolises trust, loyalty, wisdom, intelligence, faith, truth and heaven and we can’t think of anything more appropriate for the day you commit to spending your life with your significant other. Move over turmeric lattes, coffee is going green!

66 April 11, 2019 Metropol

illions are hooked on the habitual comfort of a steaming hot cup of coffee. Now stir in a teaspoon of broccoli goodness and you have an incredibly virtuous pickme-up. A dried, powdered rendition of fresh broccoli, with its nutrients still intact, was developed last year by Australia’s national science agency and agricultural research group. Heads of broccoli that wouldn’t make the beauty stakes to the supermarket shelves are used – a big sustainable benefit to broccoli coffee’s bow – and it’s a great way to guzzle down your quota of veges. Broccoli is a nutritional powerhouse, containing vitamins A, B1, B6 and E, potassium, copper, niacin, zinc, manganese and selenium, as well as valuable fibre, lots of calcium, omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin C and even protein. Broccoli powder and powder made from other green-goddess foods are nothing new. Smoothies are quite accustomed to the shade of green. However, green coffee still seems more like a St Paddy’s day drink than a daily cuppa. Turmeric lattes got a few loves, but broccoli lattes may have to join the ranks of other slightly squirmy inventions, like cockroach milk, while we wait for the celebrity endorsements. Will it take over the world? Curious palettes the globe over will certainly be giving this alien-like elixir the taste test.

Delectable Chocolate Truffles

SERVES

12

For those who love the classic rich ‘keto fat bomb’ treat, here’s a version from the new cookbook, What the Fat – simple, tasty and full of fat. Don’t eat them all at once – they’re so rich you’ll only need one or two; don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Prep time 10 minutes

Cook time 10 minutes

Chilling time 10 minutes

Ingredients 1 cup cream 3 tbsp butter 1/3 cup virgin coconut oil 175 g dark chocolate (85% or higher), broken into 2 cm pieces

For the coating (optional) Your choice of: 2 tbsp cocoa 2 tbsp chopped hazelnuts (or another nut you prefer) 2 tbsp shredded coconut

What the Fat? Recipe copyright © The Real Food Publishing Company, 2019, image copyright © Todd Eyre Photography, 2019

Method 1.

2.

Place the cream, butter and coconut oil in a small pot over a medium-low heat. Gently heat, stirring occasionally, until melted and the mix begins to bubble. Remove from the heat and add the chocolate. Whisk vigorously to combine the ingredients together – you want to form a nice stable emulsion with no oily liquid escaping round the sides.

This can also be done with a handheld blender, by placing the chocolate in a narrow jug, pouring the liquid over and blending until smooth. At this point you can stir in some desiccated coconut or chopped nuts if you like.

3.

Pour the mixture into individual moulds (an ice cube tray is good) or into a small container (about 10 cm x

15 cm). Cover and place in the fridge to chill completely.

4.

NEW

Hospitality Heart It’s an extra happy Easter for the denizens of Merivale, Elmwood, Strowan and Bryndwr as the longstanding vacancy for a local and welcoming top-quality tavern has finally been filled.

T

he Elmwood Trading Company is now under the experienced and dedicated ownership of Marty and Naomi Fuller who live in the neighbourhood and intend the bar and restaurant to be the

warm heart of the community. “We take an old fashioned and hands on approach – it really is my pleasure to host our establishment,” Marty says. The Fullers owned Trevinos for 16 years and, with 40 years

in the industry, Marty is a Life member of the Hospitality Association of New Zealand. With earthquake issues at Trevinos finalised, Marty and Naomi saw the Elmwood Trading Company and knew immediately it was for them. “We are not making sweeping changes, but we are definitely enhancing the environment and what we serve,” Marty says. “We are retaining our friendly bar and refurbishing the dining and

functions area – it’s a meeting place for friends and family. We have fabulous food because our chef team has come with us from Trevinos.” New menus offer something for everyone. Bar favourites pizzas, wings, and chips are joined by salads and lighter lunches, and dinner favourites – burgers, grilled steaks, curries and pork belly – meet tasty sharing plates, and vegetarian and gluten-free choices. The new wine list features treats from around the South Island. Perfect for functions and quiz nights, Marty says the Trevinos community and sports sponsorships continue. Find Elmwood Trading Company at 1 Normans Road.

Slice of

Vietnam

You Hanoi Me is the city’s most recent and most exciting eatery, bought to you by the remarkable hospitality team Bar Bar Black Sheep who have also tingled our tastebuds with other culinary ventures like LOUIS Champagne Bar and Red Light District.

W

ith Director Jason Whitelaw at the helm, Bar Bar Black Sheep has created an authentic slice of Vietnam right in the heart of Victoria Street’s hospitality scene – and we’re

1.

2.

Tell us about the story behind You Hanoi Me. What was the inspiration behind the name and the food? Following a trip to Hanoi I came up with this concept to complete our offering in ‘The Vicinity’ – I like to do things that are unique and not another ‘Pacific Rim’ offerings. I scoured the markets and a lot of restaurants to get as many ideas on flavours, cooking methods, presentation and décor – then I put my own spin on it in collaboration with the team. Can you tell us about yourself, and your relationship with You Hanoi Me? I am a builder and developer but a publican at heart. Out of all my

willing to bet it’s nothing like you’ve ever experienced before. We caught up with Jason to chat about this magnificent culinary masterpiece and what’s next on their agenda.

businesses, the hospitality ones present the most challenges, but it is exciting and rewarding when you see people enjoying our hospitality. I truly want to make Christchurch a great place to live, work and play which is the driving force behind my ventures.

3.

What would you say makes You Hanoi Me ‘the most exciting Vietnamese dining experience in town’? There is nothing else like it. We provide a modern twist on traditional Vietnamese dishes but have incorporated many other dishes and flavours from my travels. It is upbeat and fresh.

6.

For those who don’t know, what would you say were the most important aspects of Vietnamese cuisine which sets it apart from other Asian fare? The use of fragrances, limes, basil and mint are a key focus of Vietnamese dishes. There is a very large French influence on a lot of cuisine in Hanoi, however we purposefully chose not to incorporate that into our menu. What are your most popular dishes and cocktails? The Clay Pot Pork Belly, Braised Beef Cheek and Fresh Spring Rolls are the top sellers. My personal favourite is the Disco Eggs; you won’t find anything else like this dish in town. We sell a lot of Asahi and the crowd favourite on the cocktail list would have to be the Blueberry and Kafier Phojito. You’re part of the team behind LOUIS Champagne Bar and Red Light District. We hear you guys have another restaurant coming to the city very soon – The Athens Yacht Club. Can you tell us about it? We are on track to open the Athens Yacht Club in the former Saggio di Vino space in late May. We have found there to be a limited Greek offering in Christchurch when it is such a popular cuisine and I think the site lends itself well to this concept. We have done extensive research and visited the likes of Jim’s Greek Tavern in Melbourne and the Apollo in Sydney and believe we have a great product that will be embraced by locals. Then there are the cheeses… European staples such as Brie de Meaux and Roquefort, Kaikoura’s famed Harnett and the owner’s favourite, Pico Affiné – a soft oozy goat’s cheese. They’re the perfect ingredients for the epicurean in all of us. Why not pop in for some Kingfisher smoked salmon

ADAIRS PAPRIKA HR NEWPORT QUILTED BEDLINEN

Dug deep from within the earth, natural pigments like ochre and terracotta, sourced from clays and volcanic rocks, have been used by artists all over the world for generations.

his year we’re expecting to see a rich, authentic colour palette of terracotta, umber and spiced reds coming through in homewares, creating warm and inviting spaces. As the leaves begin to fall from the trees, one can’t help but notice that autumnal change has occurred. The vastly varying colours of each leaf as it meanders its way down to the ground presents a montage of new autumnal hues that on-trend décor borrows from more than any other season. The overall natural shift towards earthy tones can be seen everywhere from makeup on the runway to the revival of clay pottery in modern art and the growing popularity of sourcing sustainable wood in today’s architectural designs. Homewares are naturally no exception. The appeal of the auburn palette could be that the neutrality lends itself to pairing with other colours in its family, with options such as mustard, gold, rust and tan. Mother Nature offers up a seemingly endless amount of décor options for your home. For small colour changes, consider swapping out white dinner serviettes for a pumpkin coloured set adorned with gold-leaf rings when the family visits. Swap a clear glass vase with a natural clay one to liven up a floral centerpiece. If you want to make a statement, a rich, red armchair or burnt orange sofa boldly accomplish the season’s homeware trend.

Growing team & service range As Oderings Landscaping moves into its fourth year of providing landscaping services to the greater Christchurch region, it’s exciting to see how much it has grown. From a small team of three staff, it has grown to a busy team of eight. With this growth the team can now offer even more quality services to clients.

T

he addition of the qualified Landscape Architect Sasha was an integral step in this expansion process. Sasha’s primary role is to support clients through the garden consultation, planting plan and professional concept design process. “Landscape design gives

me the opportunity to get creative with plant composition, landscaping materials and spaces. Seeing a client’s landscape dreams come to life and seeing the joy it brings them is why I love being a Landscape Architect,” Sasha says. There are many elements

to consider when creating the garden of your dreams, especially around plant selection. Sasha encourages clients to think of the following points as part of the consultation process. • Take stock of your current garden: What are your likes and dislikes? Are there plants that you want to retain? Think about any issues in your garden that you would like to address, for example, are there any privacy or noise issues? Drainage or soil problems? • What kind of plants do you like and do you have a theme in mind? Do you prefer textured plants, flowers, colourful foliage and does the garden need to have fruit and veggies or be low maintenance? Do you like natives or exotics? • How much time are you willing to spend gardening? Every landscape requires some

maintenance to look good, so the time you intend to spend doing landscape maintenance plays an important role in creating the right design for your lifestyle. With so much to consider it’s good to know you are in excellent hands. Oderings Landscaping prides itself on being able to see the whole process through. The team has all the experience and knowledge that has seen the Oderings family business thrive since 1929. Oderings Landscaping is there to help with your next project. Whether it’s a full landscape with decks and pathways or help with plant selection and planting plans, they can do as much or as little as you need. ARMSTRONG INTERIORS

Angelique Armstrong Armstrong Interiors Ltd

Beddy Buys

Armstrong Interiors is now working alongside Seneca Manchester and is excited to be stocking a small range of their favourite Seneca bed linens and sheets.

A

ward-winning interior designer Angelique Armstrong is researching and getting to understand more about Egyptian cotton sheeting and bed linens. Words like long and fine silky fibres, pima cottons, ginning, and combed are all commonly used in the textile industry, but are not

familiar terms in our everyday lives. “When you break it down, all you really need is a comfortable, soft, fresh feeling on your skin and a fabulous night’s sleep,” Angelique says. “So it’s comforting to know we can leave the rest up to the experts.”

When it comes to sourcing quality bed sheets, there are five things Seneca looks for when they’re sourcing the highest quality bed sheets – the cotton, the weave, the thread count, the handle and the brand. The genuine Egyptian cotton has been grown on the banks of the Nile in Egypt’s Nile Delta, which offers the perfect climatic conditions for cotton growing. Each season Seneca Manchester designs a new product range, which is ideal for the changing temperatures, while the designs and colour palettes align with trending paint colours and the European textile companies’ forecasts. When it comes to a beautiful bed, Armstrong Interiors has found the most frustrating thing for people is that they need to order and wait for anything that is an original design of high

quality. It is not unusual to wait 6-12 weeks for your bespoke manufactured furniture to arrive. So Angelique has designed a range of bedheads and matching bed cushions. “This not only cuts down the waiting time, but it also makes it easy to complement your existing bedroom interiors, or use as a base to start from when designing a whole new interior scheme.” So if you are looking for a quality, original bedhead manufactured with special detailing and quality fabrics, this may be just what you’ve been waiting for. “When adding a bedhead into your room, it finishes the space and overall look. To me, it is one of the most important extras in completing your bedroom.” Visit www.armstronginteriors. co.nz or phone 03 356 2636.

hen it came to deciding on designs for my recent flat renovation, I found myself overwhelmed with modern concepts and styles that didn’t truly reflect who I was. With a busy household I needed every piece to have a classic and comfortable purpose while staying true to a

minimalist mindset. Mid-century modern décor was the answer. Form and function are principles that we could live by and the defining characteristic of the mid-century period, which started roughly between 1935 and 1965 in America and throughout Europe. Frank Lloyd Wright, Warren & Mahoney and Arne Jacobsen are names synonymous with the mid-century design period which started roughly between the mid 30s to late 60s. Juxtaposing sleek lines with organic shapes using new materials to reimagine traditional pieces for the modern household, there are a vast array of colours used from neutral to bold and notable graphic creations in contrasting black and white. It has a resoundingly large following as of late and due to its popularity, you don’t have to spend a fortune on furniture as there are inspired pieces available at stores everywhere at every price. Looking to invest in a treasured piece of mid-century magic? Ross Morrison of mr mod in St. Martins can accurately advise you on a piece’s origin, wood type, age, designer and correct restoration process. His recent show at CoCA last summer showcased selections from his vast mid-century collection and multi-generation passion for the genre.

Give Glamour!

Forget the toasters and towels; giving glamour is the way to go when it comes to engagement and wedding presents! Even those starting married life on the most stringent of budgets need some sort of glamour in their lives. The bare necessities don’t always cut it when it comes to presents.

T

he renaissance of house plants as an essential part of the interior home décor scene makes a living present easy, and healthy. We know now what great air cleaners houseplants make. The spectacular phalaenopsis orchids are one of the most popular houseplants. Their flowers last four months and they come with care sheets to ensure success. Peace lilies are the most popular foliage plants with striking glossy bold leaves and the bonus of pure white flowers and with one of the strongest air-cleaning abilities of all. The contemporary foliage on both the fiddle leaf figs and the trendy monsteras make them some of the current easy-care favourites. The key to turning beautiful houseplants into glamour wedding presents is using great containers to add the finishing touch; the strong trend in houseplants has encouraged a much wider choice in the

‘cover pot’ range, from ceramics to baskets to hand-finished aluminium. Add a stylish pot, have it gift-wrapped and hey presto, you have the complete present with minimum fuss. So real you won’t believe they’re not real! Not sure if the happy receivers of the living, breathing present will be committed to houseplant care? Then check out the artificial options because these days they’re so realistic only an expert can tell the difference and the artificial range opens up the possibility of having a big showstopping vase of flowers or foliage all year round. Less is definitely more when it comes to making an impact with flowers, so choose less varieties – or better still, just one – and use good numbers to get the best effect. The most effective and most popular varieties are peonies, hydrangeas, magnolias in flower and bud, roses and sweet peas. Once again the arrangement is set off to perfection with the right vase or container and, with using the artificial flower option, a waterproof container isn’t necessary so the world’s your oyster. Baskets, funky tins, cardboard, aluminium, unglazed ceramics and glass all make good containers. When it comes to glamour there’s plenty in the homewares department to make an engagement or wedding present easy, from the more classic to the latest in contemporary décor. Hand-finished, lightly burnished aluminium ware works with just about any décor style and is one of the most popular timeless wedding present lines – champagne buckets, salad bowls, candelabra, trays etc. Glass is another easy winner, from cut-glass vases to cocktail glasses to decanters, to wine glasses. The small, round, hand-forged black iron folding occasional tables fit in with any style and are super useful – they’ve been around for years but are always popular. Find all this and more at the city’s literal and figurative oasis, Terra Viva Home & Garden on the corner of Wairakei Road and Roydvale Avenue or visit www.terraviva.co.nz.

RESPONDING CREATIVELY TO DESIGN GUIDELINES Meeting design guidelines for particular sites is a must, but architect Craig South argues there is still plenty of room for creative interpretation.

W

hen making a big investment in a new home, it can be reassuring knowing there are design rules in place to protect that investment. Yet if these rules are followed conservatively, the results can be pretty bland and uninspiring, which may not be desirable from a long-term investment perspective. A creative approach will more likely produce something memorable that will hold its value and reflect your design ideals. As architects, we are required to work within guidelines, yet I 86 April 11, 2019 Metropol

feel we must not lose sight of that bigger design imperative: a unique response to a one-off set of criteria. I believe there is always space for playfulness in design. No matter the project, we always start with our client’s brief and an understanding of the site and the environment, before exploring the limits of what is possible within the rules. Such exploration requires a little reading between the lines. For example, guidelines might stipulate what colours can be used, but not specify all building elements. This allows

the option to inject personality in the non-specified elements. For instance, selecting a brightly coloured gate, without breaking the rules. These guidelines can be open to interpretation to some extent, such as in Hanmer Springs where all buildings must comply with the ‘alpine character’ ideals. The Hurunui Council is very particular about the look of the township, with strict height restrictions, specifics around roof pitch and constraints on colour choice. While these guidelines presented a challenge, by thinking differently and not opting for generic or easy options, we arrived at a very unique solution. Following the guidelines, but full of playful design elements, The Family Bach doesn’t take itself too seriously. Fundamentally, architects can add value and a sense of fun to design, even when constraints are in place. It is important, as architects, that when we are designing to guidelines and pushing those boundaries as much as possible, we have a considered rationale behind our design decisions. There can be times when we need to defend our ‘out of the box’ thinking and,

in order to achieve the best result for our client, we must fully understand the guidelines and have the ability to justify how our design fits those parameters. Considering site context is imperative to enhancing a project’s creative potential. The village at Terrace Downs features several traditional alpine homes however, we created a family home that stretched the notion of what an alpine home is. The influences of Canterbury’s rugged mountains inspired our approach to roofline design, with soaring roof planes, asymmetrical and abrupt, extenuating the mountain slopes in the background. Of course, the alpine environment affected the orientation of the home and the organisation of the internal spaces, ensuring year-round liveability and engagement with the environment. It is an inescapable reality; design guidelines must form part of the design brief for specific sites. Yet, as architects we believe it is also important to interpret these creatively. There is always room for flexibility within the rules to create something unique. www.allso.co.nz

home Revitalising Your

Most Used Space

W

Thirty-one years and counting – that’s how long M F Turnbull has been finishing furniture and joinery in Canterbury and beyond.

ith an expanded facility, Kitchen Renewal is a new division of M F Turnbull that specialises in refurbishing kitchens and furniture. No matter what the current finish of your kitchen, it can be repainted or refinished to a colour and look that you want. Even pre-finished boards such as melamine, despite the common belief that it can’t, can be refinished. When it comes to kitchens, often the most used space in the house, people don’t realise that with some relatively small changes and a quality refinishing, you virtually get a new kitchen, says Co-Owner Monique Turnbull. “Very often, kitchens are really well designed,” she says. So if you are staying with the same layout, you could make small changes, like removing unused overhead cupboards or replacing a cupboard with a set of drawers, she says. With a refinish on the cupboard doors, drawers and benchtops, new

handles and hinges, your kitchen is totally transformed. Not only is this process cost effective, it is much more friendly to the environment, creating less waste as many pulled-out units end up in landfills. This has become a particular focus for M F Turnbull – Kitchen Renewal. Specialising in making the old new again, the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ model is at the core of the business. It also applies to so much more than just kitchens. Any piece of furniture can be revitalised; heirlooms or that tired old coffee table that you like but needs either a new stain or a new colour. Chairs, side tables, drawers and more can be brought up to date to suit new décor. Individual pieces or entire suites can be revamped and revitalised to any colour or look. In their 31 years, the team at M F Turnbull has saved some very unique items, things that may otherwise have been consigned

to the trash heap; items such as filing cabinets, desks, or even things like pianos. In one instance a treasured vase was given a new look to bring into line with a new décor. Steve Baker is the Manager at M F Turnbull. His experience and expertise is called upon to advise clients of just what is possible. If you know what you want, he is able to guide you through the process and achieve your goals. If you don’t know what you want, he can have a look at your existing kitchen and offer advice on what can be done. Often, he and the team can suggest options you may not have considered. With a free consultation and quote, and a fast, efficient removal and reinstallation process, your kitchen can be looking bright and new in as little as ten working days. A centennial celebration By Ben Selby

Bentley is celebrating its 100th birthday this year; yes it’s been a century since Walter Owen Bentley, or W.O as he was called, set up shop in 1919. Metropol 110419 - Half Pg Mazda Finance Options.pdf 1 29/03/2019 12:33:26 PM

O

ne of the most iconic cars from this era was the ‘Number 9’ Bentley; a 4.5-litre supercharged blower Le Mans race car. To celebrate the legacy of this car and the 100-year anniversary of the company, Bentley has given us a special edition of the Continental GT. Called the ‘Number 9 Edition by Mulliner’, it will be available either in Viridian Green or Beluga Black, it will feature No. 9 badgework and a matching graphic on the front grille, just like the Bentley racers of yesteryear.

Inside, the headrests and door panels receive embossed ‘B’ logos in homage to the original 1930 Blower Bentley. The centre console features the familiar engine-turned finish, often referred to as ‘turned aluminium’, that was utilised in the early days of the automobile to minimise unwanted light reflection. The No 9 also features a bespoke clock made by Jaeger, to replicate the dials found on Bentleys of the pre-war era. Bentley says this future classic will be one of only 100 ever produced.

When you wander the yard at Christchurch European, it’s a beautiful sight for any car enthusiast. From Porsche to Ferrari, Audi to Aston Martin, all the marques are there, including this beautiful, elegant, pure unadulterated V8 machine.

T

he Jaguar F Type R. With a 540BHP 5.0 V8 supercharged engine and 8-speed quick-shift gearbox you have the option of paddle control manual but as I put it into gear and touched my foot

on the accelerator, I knew I didn’t want to go there quite yet. Damn! The sound of that engine is the sound of an automotive lover’s dream. It doesn’t purr like a cat, it growls like a Jaguar should.

NOW $99,995

I took it to Sumner, then over to Lyttelton and round to Governors Bay. If you know the roads, you know it’s a good road for curves. Its agile steering system made it seem like it was on rails. It has several options

you can play with at the touch of a button – ice and snow mode and track but the standard suited me just fine. The Jaguar F Type R has the very latest touch screen Bluetooth streaming/navigation which makes listening to your favourite music great if you aren’t already spellbound by the sound of the Switchable Sports Exhausts. These F Type Rs represent very good value for money at $99,995. When comparing other similar style European sports cars in this price range, there’s really no competition. Christchurch European currently holds three in stock, this vehicle in grey metallic with added ceramic brakes, a traditional Jaguar dark green vehicle and even a salsa red variant. Go down to 511 Blenheim Road and check them out. Christchurch European, the name says it all; elegant and stylish vehicles in Christchurch. Set your goals on something special and drive the dream you’ve always wanted.

It’s always a pleasure driving a new car and the new Mercedes C220D is another great offering from this top marque.

Simply say, ‘Hey BMW’ and the Intelligent Personal Assistant follows your every command, while enhanced driver assistance systems offer automated driving at some of the highest levels possible today. IT REALLY IS A BEAUTIFUL CAR TO LOOK AT AS WELL AS DRIVE.

ith a good price point, it offers a lot of features for a luxury car. The sunroof is a good starter, giving the cabin an open and light feeling while the console is a polished grey and metallic finish; 1950cc, 4 cylinder, 143kW and 400 torque, it really is a beautiful car to look at as well as drive. It features dual exhausts and sleek curves, the fuel economy of diesel, its torque allows instant response when driving – 0-100 in 6.9 seconds – and it’s smooth and refined. It’s not touch screen on the Apple Play but after a bit of time with Mercedes and their control dial and touch pad system, I’ve become used to navigating it, though it did take a while to stray from my iPhone mentality. Something I totally love about this vehicle are the stunning 19-inch bi-colour twin spoke alloys. The model I drove came white with

black rims and boy does it look good. It just adds something a little special. When you meet the car at night, it has carpet lighting to help you out with an LED lighting system that helps show you the way – technology at its greatest. Its all-digital display and interface systems are getting easier to handle and a lot more simplistic for someone who is kind of plug and go. The steering wheel adjusts automatically to your specifications and it just ‘feels’ good. The base model sits at $75,400 but my model had some great additions; AMG package $3700; seat comfort package $900; dark tinted privacy glass $700; and the vision package at $6300, all together making a grand total of $87,000. I definitely felt that I was driving something special. You see a few C-class models on the street but the

NG SPECIAL

C220D just felt… special. Earlier in the year I managed to grab a week with the C200; the little petrol sister to the C220, it is a 1497cc, 4-cylinder, 135kW, 280 Nm rear wheel drive, mild petrol hybrid at $73,900. It had similar 18-inch bi-colour wheels and different upholstery, but it just isn’t as good as its big brother. I can’t put my finger on it because, although they look the same, the 220D just seems the better buy. That could be my macho ‘got to have more power’ driver mentality speaking but the C220D just feels better. I keep saying that and it really is personal opinion but perhaps you need to judge this for yourself by taking a test drive with the team at Armstrong Prestige. The C class is Mercedes’ core sedan range and after driving the C220D and the C200 I can see why they are such good staples in the Mercedes range.

DRIVE GOOD THE

Charity initiative Drive for Good ended in style at Archibald Motors, with three local charities taking home a share of $100,000 at a vibrant celebration in the showrooms on Tuam Street. Seven more charities were gifted equal shares in $50,000. Cantabrians clearly relished the chance to show support for their chosen charity, with more than 21,000 votes cast by the public during the three-month long initiative.

A

rchibald’s Managing Director John Fairhall was full of praise for the way the organisations had engaged with the initiative. “It has been an honour for us to get to know the ten charities better and see the work they do to make Christchurch a healthy and happy place to live,” he says. With a final tally of 4,512, The Champion Centre was the recipient of the greatest

number of votes, earning a staggering $50,000 for the charity. Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust and Ronald McDonald House South Island received second and third place respectively, each receiving $25,000 towards their causes. Although I was there for the charity event, the well-placed array of Porsche, Jaguar and Range Rovers caught my eye. After all I was sitting next to a Range

Rover Sport SVR, with its Yulong White Metallic with Carbon Exterior Kit and Panoramic Sunroof flexing its carbon fibre exterior and stunning 22” 5-split spoke gloss black alloys. It took my attention substantially after formalities had ended. Kudos to you Archibald’s, you are an automotive company with a Cantabrian heart.

Second

TO NONE

Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi are the premium European marques. When someone needs servicing and repairs for such a premium brand of vehicle, it’s only smart that they go to the company that has the technology and experience to do the most efficient job possible. Kevin Burt Ltd has that team.

W

ith 43 years in the industry and more than 80 years of experience combined, it’s a well-oiled machine of experience. The team is well trained in all areas of servicing and repairs on MercedesBenz, BMW and Audi vehicles. They have a passion for the brands and the experience to recognise the issues. With cars that are world leaders in technological development, the engineering is second to none. That is why they enjoy

working on them. They are the specialists in Christchurch. It’s a workshop first and foremost with sound qualifications in automotive engineering. They embrace new technology and are constantly updating their model-specific diagnostic machines. Servicing over 2000 vehicles a year, they have shown the South Island that reliability, experience and service go hand in hand to making the all needed service or repair something that gets done properly and

efficiently, the first time. Kevin says, “on numerous occasions we repair vehicles that have been taken to other ‘specialist workshops’. More often than not that workshop has been unable to arrive at the correct diagnosis to repair the vehicle for the owner.” So, when your BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Audi needs some help, you know who to call, 324-328 St Asaph Street, phone 03 365 0531.
