“Not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that’s counted truly counts” – Einstein A hundred and twenty-five years ago, New Zealand women changed the world when they vigorously – and successfully – campaigned to get the right to vote. They’ve held a figurative torch up for other extraordinary, intelligent and inspiring women pioneers across all walks of life to follow on. Christchurch is hosting its biennial Writers & Readers Festival. The largest literary event in the South Island, it is giving us access to some of these extraordinary women, not just from New Zealand, but also from much further abroad. The line-up includes adventurers like Robyn Davidson, who walked 2700 kilometres across the Australian desert with a dog and four camels, and Hollie Woodhouse, who

CELEBRATING URBAN CREATIVITY Bringing life to the central city has been the remit of city planners, policy makers and even the public post-quake, as we seek to reinvigorate and reimagine this space.

I

t’s a brief that has been met by FESTA, the vibrant biennial festival of urban creativity and community, which is set to once again bring thousands back into the city’s heart this Labour Weekend (19-22 October). This year’s festival explores the interconnections between food and the city. Food has historically been the foundation of our urban spaces and has played a crucial role in bringing life to this central space, with new and relocated restaurants, community gardens and food trucks keeping the city’s fires burning. On Saturday 20 October the headline event, FEASTA! – a free and spectacular celebration of food and city-making – will be live for just one night in and around the city’s new public spaces. Christchurch’s biggest and brightest street party, it will feature large-scale installations, performances, artworks, activities and lots of wonderful things to eat and drink. The Associate Programme, which runs over the course of Labour Weekend, builds on the theme of feasting and explores food’s role in the urban fabric through workshops, performance, art, talks, tours, family events and more. Some of the highlights include Freerange Press’s symposium hosted by Simon Wilson, an outdoor film screening put on by The Community Gardens and Food Resilience network, a food foraging tour and a Friday night disco of funk and food. Save the date and keep your eyes peeled for the full programme by visiting www.festa.org.nz.

Telling Tales extraordin

Lilia Tarawa is a New Zealand writer, speaker, holistic health consultant and business coach. Born into New Zealand’s infamous religious cult, Gloriavale, her life was both heaven and hell, before she fled with her eleven family members at eighteen years of age. “The universe second chanced me a life I never dreamed possible,” she wrote in a blog recently.

S

haring her story last year at TEDxChristchurch, tears rolled down her face. It was a story of survival, but it was also a story of hope, of courage and of empowerment. Kelly Coe’s Colourful crush

The Augustine and Charlo labels have been injecting colour into Kiwi fashion for more than a decade. With Augustine currently showing at New Zealand Fashion Week, Metropol talks to Founder Kelly Coe about how colour makes the world a happier place.

12 August 16, 2018 Metropol

You would be one of the most followed New Zealand fashion labels on social media. Why do you think people have connected so strongly with what you do? I think because I was the first person to put myself out there personally and really put a face to my brand. I didn’t get a marketing assistant to do all my posts for me or hand it over to a social marketing company, I didn’t heavily stylise my photos, I just showed myself with my kids at the park wearing my product, or Nathan and I out for dinner wearing Augustine. I recognised that my customers are from all over NZ and are just everyday Kiwis and mums and they want to be included and part of something. Country Road, Witchery etc are faceless to them; they don’t belong to that team, but I have always wanted Augustine to be a team/family that you can all be apart of and feel that you can relate to my life. And if they thought I was too dressed up at school pick up then maybe it inspires them to wear their best clothes daily rather than save them for a special occasion. My followers feel like they know me and often stop and tell me that they feel like my friend. I love that – I would love to have 160,000 friends haha.

Your collections are filled with colour, something that at face value people might not think would necessarily strike a sartorial chord with New Zealanders. Why did you think this would be such a success? At first I didn’t know if it would be, I just hoped it would. My first collection was sooo colourful that most of the stockists I showed it to didn’t get it and didn’t buy it. It has taken years to push through the barriers of black and white dressing in NZ, but we are getting there. I see so much more colour now than I did 10 years ago and that makes me very happy. Colour makes the world a happier place. You’re showing at NZ Fashion Week (August 27 to September 2), what are you looking forward to at this year’s event? We sold out our show in a day, so I am most excited to put on a cool show for the 700 ladies that snapped up tickets so quickly. I always feel pressure to thank them for supporting me by making sure it’s a feast for the eyes and a fun amazing show. I love that the crowd that turns up to my show are so colourful and polar opposite to who watches the shows during the week of fashion week. It’s like a rainbow hits the waiting area at fashion week right before our show; you know it’s time for Augustine to hit the catwalk by the sea of colour waiting outside. That makes me so very proud and happy of how far we have come with the colour debate. Can you give us the low down on some of your upcoming collections? We are heading into summer so it’s a rainbow of colour coming which is how I like it. Lots of maxi dresses, sequin skirts, floral prints, and of course a new kimono every week. I love summer. We also have the most amazing colourful wedges coming out in our shoe range that I can’t wait to have in every colour, especially the fluro yellow ones.

How did the Augustine story begin? Augustine began like all good stories, in our garage. It came from seeing a gap in the market for special occasion wear for everyday NZ women, at attainable price points and grew from there. It was a hope and a dream that we knew NZ fashion needed but didn’t know it yet haha. Nathan and I started it from an idea and slogged it out until NZ women noticed, started to follow along with us and joined the colour revolution.

Mother Nation of the

She was adopted by the country as its unofficial ‘Mother of the Nation’. Now, after many years fronting the news, Judy Bailey has gone back to her roots freelancing, blogging, spending time with her grandchildren and finding adventures on a global stage. 16 August 16, 2018 Metropol

What would you consider as some of your most defining career highlights? In the very early days, working for the South Tonight in Christchurch I did a couple of specials I was very proud of…. one about abortion and the other about the Cooperite sect then based near Rangiora. Being asked to front Top Half with John Hawkesby, was another, then the move to anchoring the main evening bulletin. Fronting telethons was always a highlight; seat of the pants broadcasting for 24 hours on the trot was quite a challenge but always great fun, especially in the early days. More recently, fronting Maori Television’s ANZAC coverage was extraordinarily special for me. It was an honour to be asked to do it. What have you been up to in 2018? I’m an ambassador for Samsung and that saw me, remarkably, in Korea in January, running in the Winter Olympic Torch Marathon! I’m the last person you’d imagine would be doing that as I have never run a step, willingly, in my life! I surprised myself though and managed to get reasonably fit in time to do it…. It’s never too late to do that! I also do some promotional work for Avalon Waterways and that saw my husband, Chris and myself off on a trip down the Seine to the Normandy Beaches in May. I’m currently thoroughly enjoying writing a series of profiles on New Zealand women for the Australian Woman’s Weekly. I also do some travel writing and various other bits and pieces. We are heading to Africa this month to trek into the mountains of Uganda to visit the gorillas, something I’ve long dreamt of doing, so that will be a real thrill. What have been some of the most fulfilling aspects of your career? It’s hard to single things out but I think overall, being on the spot when history is being made, bringing those stories into people’s living rooms and forming a connection, albeit through a television screen, with so many New Zealanders. How does a day in the life of Judy Bailey look these days? Because I’m freelance and involved in lots of different projects, my days tend to be a bit chaotic and differ from day to day. I do try to fit in a pilates class most weekdays if possible and a dog walk. We have two cairn terriers who get very lemon lipped if they don’t have a good long walk! I’ll probably attach myself to the computer for a while, answering emails, researching or writing. We have seven beautiful grandchildren ranging in age from eleven to newborn and all of them live in Auckland, so being a granny is high on my list of priorities! I love spending time with them

and I have the second youngest for the day most Wednesdays. I’m actively involved with a number of charities so there’s always something happening. As well as that I do some work as a brand ambassador for Samsung and some promotional work for Avalon Waterways. For the past few years Chris and I have also taken small tours of people to wonderful destinations around the world with Auckland company, Bon Voyage Travel. I also have a travel blog, still very much in its infancy, ‘On The Road Again’.

You have had an incredible career, what attracted you to journalism? I’ve always loved writing and, being an inherently curious person, I guess journalism seemed like the ideal career. It’s the storytelling that attracted me, not so much the presenting out front. I’ve now come full circle and returned to the storytelling with my writing.

How close to your heart is the Women’s Refuge and how fulfilling is it to lend your profile to such a worthy cause? The Women’s Refuge movement is extremely close to my heart. The levels of domestic violence in this country of ours are among the highest in the world, so high it’s hard to comprehend. It’s vital that women and children are supported to leave violent situations. Living in constant fear can cause lifelong changes in the brain. Another of the charities I’m deeply involved with is the Brainwave Trust Aotearoa, which brings the latest research in neuroscience to anyone who influences the life of a child. What that research tells us is that our earliest relationships are more important than we ever believed possible; they literally wire up our brains and determine the sort of adult we’ll become. The child that’s born into a loving, warm, nurturing, emotionally responsive home will typically flourish but if you live in constant fear of your caregivers, if your emotional needs are not met, then it’s likely your brain will be wired for the fight or flight response. You’ll be concentrating on survival, you won’t trust the world, you’ll find it difficult to form stable relationships, to concentrate and become an able learner, to empathise with others, even to feel remorse. That is not what we want for our children. The refuge gives women and their children a safe place, a haven from which to begin new lives without fear. They break the cycle of violence. They do wonderful work. Having been around all those years on the telly has given me a bit of a profile so it’s great to be able to use that to highlight the great work that non-profit organisations are doing. You’ve done a lot of travel writing, what are your favourite destinations? Africa would definitely be right up there, particularly Botswana. It is beautiful, unspoilt, alive with animals and birds and the people have a great sense of humour. Other favourites are India…. particularly Kolkata and Ahmedabad for the children we met, and Cuba for its music, its history and its people. Having said that, I’m a travelholic…. I love an adventure and each place we’ve been has had its own special attraction. What do you love about New Zealand and always brings you back? It’s home! It’s in my DNA; my children and my friends are here. I love its beauty, its diversity and the fact that it continually punches above its weight on the world scene. We are a nation full of surprises! Bryce Gallery owner Min Kim says the paintings of the ‘Tranquil Trio’ exhibition (25 July – 31 August at Bryce Gallery) are examples of exceptional brushwork. “Warm, fine light just comes out of the canvases – it’s amazing work.”

T

he exhibition features 28 works by South Island artists Allan Batt, Philip Beadle and Sheryl McCammon. Allan Batt’s paintings are vivid, strong and suffused with such a light, they appear almost photographic. Tidal Margins, for instance, is a large canvas depicting river stones of every conceivable size, shape and colour; its realism has you wanting to reach out your fingertips to touch the smooth, water-glistened stones. Christchurch artist Philip Beadle focuses on figurative images and our local cityscape. The interplay of light and shadow – such as the glow from a fireplace illuminating a naked woman as she dries her hair, or the beauteous light of a park caught in a curtain of

mist - is exquisitely rendered. Sheryl McCammon’s love of boats and harbour life is evident in her seascapes. Misty Morning is of a boathouse erected on stilts. The vapour of rising mist above the water and the mirrored reflection of a dinghy moored beneath the boathouse brings a deep sense of inner peace and serenity. “The essential fundamentals of which we all need in our lives are warmth, light and tranquillity,” says Min; in viewing the works of the ‘Tranquil Trio’ exhibition, we are reminded of the profound truth behind her words. The rebuilding city is emerging as a creative hotspot, perhaps most evident in the burgeoning arts scene within the central city. Now the stage is set for The Court Theatre to make its triumphant return to the central city, with a new home within the Performing Arts Precinct.

F

or the past six and a half years, The Court Theatre has operated from a purpose-built temporary theatre at The Shed in Addington. Christchurch City

Council has been working with the theatre and the Crown on options for developing a permanent home for the theatre company, Christchurch City Council General Manager

Council is prioritising the new home within the Performing Arts Precinct, setting up a Theatre Working Group which will have until the end of March 2019 to present a viable business case and concept design to council for approval. “We are incredibly excited by the prospect of moving back into the city centre,” The Court Theatre Chair, Steven van der Pol says. “The Court brings with it significant footfall which will help to revitalise the central city.” Unique in New Zealand, The Court is a producing theatre, employing a company of more than 250 practitioners annually. All sets, costumes and technical elements are designed and created in house, with the organisation’s performances attracting about 150,000 people a year.

What attracted you to bag design? I was more attracted to the creative process of creating. Overtime, these became bags and making bags became the business. However, we are constantly creating: stores, print publications and conceptual imagery – bags are just part of the story. Where do you draw your inspiration from? I draw my inspiration from craft and creators, and the tactile nature of making things. Our recent campaign for our Voyage collection showcased four fantastical costumes crafted by three different local male creators, each made from their mastered material. Deadly Ponies is such an incredible success story, why do you think people have connected so strongly with what you do? With everything we do we try to be authentic; in the materials we use and the processes. We create products that have

a story, are functional, sustainable and are made with the highest quality materials. People have connected with these values and our loyal followers have spread the word, which has ultimately driven our success and we wouldn’t be here without them. Can you tell us about your latest collection Voyage? Our latest collection Voyage is about travel, whether that be internationally or the journey made to and from work, our campaign also depicts travelling to another dimension. All of the pieces are designed with travel in mind or for someone on the go; from overnight bags and briefcases, to backpacks and compendiums. The collection successfully launched worldwide in June. What does the next 12 months have in store for Deadly Ponies? The next twelve months are really exciting for us, our team is currently working on an international project which will launch next year. We are also dedicated to growing and supporting our regional community hubs with a focus on Ballantynes in Christchurch, as well as fostering creative communities with the launch of the Glassworks, a creative space at the back of our flagship store in Ponsonby, Auckland, which can host creative installations, exhibitions, talks and events.

How did the Deadly Ponies story begin? Our story began quite organically. While at University, I took a screenprinting elective, where I would screen print designs onto leather and with that leather I would create small leather goods like coin purses and sell them at markets. A small store started selling the goods and suddenly it got picked up by other stores and before I knew it we had created a brand.

When the shoe fits

Launching her Spring/Summer ’18 Collection at Jacks Point Clubhouse on Friday 3 August, as part of the Veuve ‘Clicquot in the Snow’, all eyes were on the beautiful and inspiring Kathryn Wilson.

S

inger and jewellery designer Boh Runga opened the event with a snare drum solo before the models strutted down the catwalk showcasing the vibrant new collection.

30 August 16, 2018 Metropol

The 2018 showcase also coincided with the 200th year since Madame Clicquot blended the world’s first rosé champagne and Kathryn celebrated with a special edition rosé pink belt that marked the

reintroduction of belts to her design portfolio. Metropol caught up with Kathryn at the event to discuss the dizzying heights of sartorial success.

What is your inspiration behind your designs? Julia and I selfishly design the collections each season based around what we are wanting to wear ourselves… we celebrate with colour when designing our summer collections as our customers often have cocktail events, weddings and annual race events etc over the summer months that are a perfect showcase for a beautiful feature shoe to complement their outfits.

The summer collections are colourful, playful and joyful

After 15 years, how are you feeling woman’s fashion shoes are progressing in New Zealand? New Zealand women love to look good, but most importantly feel good in their shoes and we have prioritised comfort into all of our designs so that our promise to our customers is around providing a shoe that can see them through from 8am when they leave the house to 11pm when they arrive home after a fun night with friends. We are finding our customers are more open to wearing colour especially on their feet and like to buy quality items that last and wear well, not having to replace footwear each season. We love this and really enjoy seeing customers wear their favourite pair from years before. What kind of challenges have you experienced in that time and what hurdles have you had to overcome? I would have a long list of challenges we have experienced over the 15-

year journey of the brand! We are constantly learning and developing as a team to ensure each season we are better than the one previous. Our main hurdles have been around logistics and freight handling being so far away from all of our suppliers in Europe and Asia however, these systems are improving every year with specialists such as DHL on board to make the process run smoothly. How would you style your bespoke Clicquot belt? It can be worn high as a waisted belt with summer dresses and blouses with matching pink heels… or low on the hip with jeans and a white t-shirt / blazer combo with trainers. It’s super classic and versatile to be dressed ‘up or down’. How do you make each Clicquot in the Snow show better than the last, given this is your 7th year. Haha this is something we joke about every year, as the calibre of the event gets higher and higher each year with the tickets selling out in under three minutes this year! We surprised and delighted the audience with Clicquot’s famous ‘twist’ and enjoyed wowing the guests with a playful and celebratory catwalk event… with the best playlist of 80s/90s favourites! What kind of values do you and Veuve Clicquot share – the partnership seems to work so well? Veuve Clicquot love to celebrate innovation and creativity, along with women in leadership and business and we are lucky to align all celebrations throughout the year. It is the 8th year we have been aligned as an ambassador and I am very proud of the association, hoping to encourage more women as entrepreneurs to raise the bar and keep thinking BIG.

fashion

Kathryn, what can people expect from the latest collection? The summer collections are colourful, playful and joyful – a palette of cerise pinks, canary yellow and floral printed leathers adorned with gold metal stud detailing and glass gemstones. We have designed irresistible uppers on all heights on heels and sandals with everyday wear covered and special occasion heels for summer weddings and balmy nights out.

Luxurious lasting leather Peter O’Brien mastered the art of leathercraft back in the ’70s on the West Coast. Then two and a half years ago, he revisited his passion, custom-making exquisite handmade leather goods full time.

W

ith specialist tools from America, he stamps and embosses the leather to create unique one-off pieces to order, using only top-quality hides from a natural vegetable-based tanning process. The amazing designer handbags or student satchels are a structured style that will last for years – likely a lifetime. They are all hand lace stitched with extra-strong thread. “It’s quite time-consuming, but I find it enjoyable and relaxing,” Peter says. “No one will have the same – you’ll be the only one in the world with that bag.” Village Leathercraft can now laser any picture or design to fit. Recent works were an intricate fantail on a bag for a German client, and also stunning albatross design for a pilot

from Bahrain. Peter says there’s nothing like a great fitting belt. “Our strong leather eventually softens, then melds with the contour of the body.” Individually designed and patterned, they make fantastic gifts for bride grooms, embossed with names and dates. He makes sturdy practical pouches for any purpose, from gardeners to builders, to hold personal tools, phones and equipment. And American chefs have ordered his tailor-made protective knife rolls. Hard-wearing dog collars can be personalised with names, colours and patterns. Ring Peter and meet him at his studio with an idea, and he can make it work. ome call it a scarf. Or take a blanket; cut two arm-holes into it and voila – a jacket. As long as it’s long. Depending on the fabric, this is good news for an elongated look from now right through spring and summer. There are undoubtedly mini-skirts out there waiting to be bought, or diminutive jump-suits, and the long coat-ish layer over top helps with being seemly; maybe even elegant and ageappropriate!

Long lengths are nothing short of transformative LEE MATHEWS MBFWA18 PHOTO BY TIM DA-RIN FOR FLAUNTER.COM

The long & long of it By Liesl Johnstone

Sashaying around in something long – floaty or woolly – is in. Wearing your blankey is perfectly acceptable. Toddlers inherently appreciate this fashion fact.

Long lengths are nothing short of transformative. The other great thing about having a few languid long things in your wardrobe, sleeved or unsleeved, is that these can introduce colour in game-changing ways. If your shorter clothes underneath are black or navy, a neutral or pastel long-layer over-top has a cool, casual, balancing effect. The converse is also true. What’s more, the looseness of a long top layer just works with modern life. It’s easy to remove when hot. It can cover your skin when you’re caught short on sunscreen during lunch. It’s equally good for coverage when you overdid the fake tan, or for when your tan’s not yet developed. In fact a long pastel layer looks superlative with deliberately white skin. It emboldens us to embrace being pale and interesting. What’s not to like?

I

t’s become increasingly shameful to carry your bread and butter home in plastic bags, or even to drink coffee from a takeaway cup. The idea of investing in greatquality, natural-fibre clothing which lasts season after season is certainly not at odds with sustainable intentions. It’s fast, throw-awaynext-season fashion that’s the new immorality. So here’s a novel idea, or maybe just a good one to revisit: Before giving away clothes you no longer like (because bin-waste is so last-decade), consider whether some tailoring would render them fabulous. The truth is inherently foolish; many of us are tipped into buying primarily because of the adrenalin rush of a deal at a 70 percent off sale. Once home and in the harsh light of day reflected from your own candid mirror, that cinch of a bargain isn’t so flash. How about a nip and a tuck, or a re-hemming? It’s amazing what can happen when a piece of clothing stops at a flattering level on your body, rather than the opposite. Tailoring is an investment in sartorial longevity plus extra personal flair. It’s environmental up-cycling. Win-win.

Denim Dreaming By Melinda Collins

Every decade flaunts a scandalous aesthetic which rides against the tide of convention. In the 1950s, it was denim that was making sartorial waves.

H

aving found its fashionable feet in 1871 when the iconic ‘jean’ pant was invented by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss, denim has had a somewhat troubled upbringing since the 1950s when jeans emerged as the unofficial uniform of youth counter-culture. Popularised by Marlon Brando and James Dean, jeans were torn, patched and intentionally abused by stone and acid washes, demonstrating the antiauthoritarian reputation of jeans and their wearers. While at the time these rebellious revolutionaries stirred

controversy with their sartorial courage, their visions have not only endured but been contemporised, and today denim is reinvented and reinvigorated season after sartorial season. Its modern manifestation continues to court favour with the who’s who of fashionable circles, where it has since emerged as a timeless addition to your sartorial portfolio. We put our fashionable noses to the ground to find out how this seasonal staple is being reimagined in upcoming collections and how you can up your denim game.

Mum jeans: We probably don’t have to tell you that high-rise, non-stretch, vintage-inspired mum jeans are everywhere right now, and they’re a good investment because, with their timeless, flattering aesthetic and ability to suit everyone, they’ll likely never fall completely out of favour.

Gorgeously Groovy: Yes, relaxed, full-length jeans in straight and even gently flared silhouettes are making their way back into our lives. A little groovy and a little 90s, they are practically made for a small heel and, with a little bit of a roll-up, you can go from dressy to casual with one pair.

Cancer research

Statistics show that almost everyone in New Zealand at some point will be affected by cancer in their lifetime, but with research identifying improvements and more effective treatment, many people are living longer with cancer and many cancers can now be cured.

R

esearch is the best hope against cancer, according to the Cancer Research Trust New Zealand, which supports innovative research projects designed to detect, treat and prevent cancer. The trust is inviting applications to help get cancer on the run. “Big things can happen from small beginnings,” Executive Director, Dr Douglas Ormrod says. “We give bold ideas about cancer a chance to grow. “We fund research and professional development across the cancer spectrum from prevention, through detection, diagnosis and treatment to end of life palliative or hospice care.” One of the largest cancer research charitable trusts in New Zealand, Cancer Research Trust has funded more than $15 million in research and professional development projects since 2002, with every cent of every dollar donated applied to the work of the trust. The grant rounds are generally heavily

over-subscribed and have attracted some of the brightest minds in cancer research anywhere in the world, who have used the funding to get out of the starting blocks and on to bigger things. Rutherford Discovery Fellow and Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Pathology at Otago University, Dr Aniruddha Chatterjee used the Cancer Research Trust grant to fund his work into understanding the biological changes that switch genes on or off to stop cancer cells from spreading and killing people. “That grant was the springboard to greater knowledge, contributing to a global effort to unlock the secrets behind resistance to immunotherapy,” he says. “The trust recognised early on how topical and fundamental our work was and the grant substantially helped us push on to gain traction in this new and leading-edge field of research which potentially has a global impact, not just on cancer patient treatments but also other illnesses.”

Another leading cancer immunologist, Dr Roslyn Kemp, also working at Otago University, says the funding from the trust was vital to furthering cancer research in New Zealand. “I was embarking on a completely new programme and the trust recognised the benefit of sponsoring risky yet innovative research using a brand-new technology to study colorectal cancer tumours. Our research has immediate applicability to patients, as well as providing new ideas in the research field.” Dr Ormrod says the grants cover cancerrelated public health or biomedical, clinical, epidemiological or psychosocial fields, as well as education and training for students and health professionals wanting to pursue careers related to cancer care and research. To find out about the research project, fellowship and professional development grants, the deadlines for applications and how to apply go to cancerresearchtrustnz. org.nz/apply-for-a-grant. he words ‘breathtaking’ and ‘retirement village’ don’t usually go together, but when entering the sumptuous foyer of its new Club House, this fine establishment seems no different to a hotel – boutique and sophisticated, yet cosy and homely. Lady Wigram is part of the Golden Healthcare Group which has a number of facilities in Christchurch and been operating for more than 30 years. The building was designed by the experienced team at Foley Architects and built by Grace Builders, which has demonstrated a real eye for detail. The contemporary décor was tastefully completed by Georgie Kirkcaldie Inglis. In addition to the 101 independent villas, the next stage is underway, featuring 14 new apartments, swimming pool, spa and gym. Eventually Lady Wigram will include 73 apartments, a rest home, dementia facility and hospital.

Each compact, but roomy apartment has a full kitchen. Apartments are serviced weekly and lunches, morning and afternoon teas are provided in the social lounge. Here also is where the entertainment happens, such as singalongs with popular local musicians. The Hangar Bar is manned by volunteer residents who recently gained their Bar Manager licences from Ara. The many social activities include majong and tai chi. An upstairs retreat has a library and stately billiard room where residents can socialise “It’s a lifestyle decision,” says Olivia. And it’s most certainly living life in style at Lady Wigram Retirement Village, 210 Kittyhawk Ave Wigram. or those who didn’t get to see that production, or for those who did and can’t wait to see it again, then be excited for the return of Les Misérables in September; it promises to be an epic show to conclude the 2018 Showbiz Christchurch season! Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, this new production will be directed by Stephen Robertson with musical direction by Richard Marrett. This is Robertson’s third time directing a Showbiz production of ‘Les Mis’, a show he has come to love and know so well. Sydney born tenor Daniel Belle is to perform the principal role of Jean Valjean. The 2018 ‘Le Mis’ will feature the set from the 2001 Showbiz production – including the famous revolve – all of which has undergone major refurbishment. The story of ‘Les Mis’ is set in nineteenth century France. Valjean is released from an unjust imprisonment of 19 years and hopes to start a new life. But all he finds is an untrusting and very unkind world. He breaks his parole in the hope of starting over, which only initiates a lifelong battle to clear his name while being ceaselessly hounded by police inspector Javert. Belle has performed the role ‘hundreds of times’ in the Australian National production of Les Misérables, and in the Asian tour performing in Manila, Singapore and Dubai. Daniel last performed at the Isaac Theatre Royal in June as part of the internationally acclaimed vocal group The Ten Tenors. Performing in the Ten Tenors Double Platinum tour, Daniel has sung throughout Australia, Europe and

2.

Location, location, location It may be the mantra for real estate agents the world over, but it is equally relevant when it comes to selecting an event venue. Think carefully about where attendees and speakers will be coming from and transport options to the venue. If it is out of town, accommodation and transport will need to be considered, so good transportation links and easy access are a must. When transportation becomes difficult, you risk losing attendees.

3.

Space Savers Put time and planning into your space requirements. Many conference venues feature varying room sizes, from small boardrooms to large conference spaces seating upwards of 100. A lengthy conference in a cramped space is going to be uncomfortable for attendees, while a 100-seater conference space for an intimate 10-person meeting is going to give the perception of an unsuccessful event, even when this isn’t the case.

4.

Mod Cons It may be a low-key event, but don’t underestimate the mod cons that can make all the difference. Audio-visual technology is generally a must, even for small scale events after all, your speakers may want to use a PowerPoint presentation. Speaker systems, projectors and interactive white boards are just some of the capabilities that can elevate your event from good to great. Chances are your attendees will want to use laptops, tablets or smartphones to take notes, so Wi-Wi support is a bit of a must when it comes to modern day venue needs.

5.

Famine or feast Many venues will offer package deals, with catering included. Feeding your attendees is critical. Lack of breaks and regular food intervals and concentration levels simply won’t be on your side. This leads directly onto budget.

6.

Accessible Accommodation If your event is running all day, for several days, or is out of town, then accommodation is a key consideration. Conference venues that offer accommodation on site is a great option, especially if your event is running over several days, as this ensures attendees can relax at the end of the day, without additional travel.

THE HOW-TO OF

Exceptional Events When it comes to hosting a successful event – whether that takes the form of a conference, meeting or training seminar – the options are seemingly endless. So where do you start? We’ve looked at the key planning points behind a successful event to ensure you meet your end goals.

1.

Budget Basics Like so many things in life, it all comes down to the bottom line. Set a budget before you even start your planning. This is going to affect the venue, catering options and accommodation. Conferences and training seminars are there to support your bottom line, not blow it.

One of the world’s top five international winter sports events takes centre stage in the Southern Lakes later this month. Wanaka, Queenstown and Naseby play host to Audi quattro Winter Games New Zealand, which showcases the most talented elite athletes in skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey and curling.

B

eginning on Friday 24 August with a spectacular opening ceremony in Wanaka, Winter Games NZ is aiming to build on the growing national interest in snow sports and the higher profile it is currently enjoying. That is largely thanks to teenage sensations Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Nico Porteous, who both won bronze medals for New Zealand at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in South Korea in February. The two young Wanaka

residents are confirmed starters for Winter Games NZ and are bound to captivate the audience again with their flips and tricks, as they did in Pyeongchang. The glamour event of Winter Games NZ is the FIS (International Ski Federation) Junior Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships, held at Cardrona Alpine Resort near Wanaka. It’s a prestigious competition expected to attract an impressive international

lineup and new Games Chief Executive Marty Toomey is excited at the prospect. “The cream of the world’s young talent will compete, along with our own leading junior freeskiers and snowboarders,” Marty says. “And we will undoubtedly see many of them on the podium in 2022 at the Beijing Olympic Winter Games.” Audi quattro Winter Games NZ runs from 24 August to 8 September. Southern leaders By Keiran Bleach

Queenstown’s Catalyst Trust provides a forum for sharing ideas and debating some of the big issues facing Southern Lakes and the rest of the world – and the concept has really taken off.

A

s is often the case, Catalyst was formed over a few coffee conversations between likeminded locals who wanted to make a difference. AJ Mason, who describes his day job as “technology strategist,” co-chairs the trust with former Queenstown Lakes District Councillor Cath Gilmour. He says they wanted to offer people mental challenges and intellectual stimulation in a place that is more commonly known for its physical challenges and outdoor activities. The aim is to bring together compelling speakers, respected thought leaders, subject-matter and policy experts and present them to an audience that has a thirst for knowledge and a desire to interact,

exchange bright ideas, ask questions and voice opinions. “We want to spark solutions; collaboration; team-work; innovative and provocative thinking; creativity; and an understanding of each other’s perspectives,” AJ says. This month Catalyst hosts an affordable housing forum, which is expected to generate a high level of interest. Speakers include Housing Minister Phil Twyford, Generation Rent author and economist Shamubeel Eaqub, and Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust chair Martin Hawes. Can We Ever Fix Queenstown’s Housing Crisis? is on Thursday 30 August at 7pm at Queenstown Memorial Centre. For more information, visit www.catalystnz.org.

Surrounded by mountain ranges, Cromwell is the heart of the Central Otago wine industry, a main fruit growing centre, location of one of the South’s best golf links and with Highlands Motorsport Park and Central Motor Speedway, a motor racing mecca.

fter the Clutha River (Mata-Au) was dammed at Clyde in the early 1990s, Cromwell’s revitalisation as a great place to live and work, and a vibrant visitor destination, has never ceased. Following a recent multi-million dollar metamorphosis of Golden Gate Lodge, The Gate Hospitality and Tourist Centre emerged as four distinct attractions on the one landscaped and easy parking site at the corner of State Highway 8B (linking Highway 6 and Highway 8) and Barry Avenue. Seven days a week from 11am to 10.30pm, Five Stags Bar & Restaurant at The Gate welcomes locals and passing travellers to an appropriately Central Otago hunting lodge theme. The restaurant area is cleverly separated from the bar which also features an authentic corrugated iron and exposed frame hunter’s hut rich in memorabilia. Five Stags is home to Cromwell’s famous Black Panther Pizza. Forage Information Centre & Café at The Gate is an exciting concept providing amazing food from 6am to 4pm in a spacious, modern environment with spectacular views and luxury toilet facilities. With 47 standard and premium rooms, all with breathtaking Central Otago views, and a standalone conference and events centre, Harvest Hotel at The Gate is Cromwell’s only hotel. Super Liquor, The Gate’s fourth brand, is the place to go for Central Otago wines.

build R

ob Ferguson moved to Christchurch from Scotland seven years ago, putting his exceptional skills to use, also building his own home, before moving to Queenstown with his wife Mel, from Invergargill, and two daughters. “This time I decided to build a comfortable family home exactly how we wanted. I appreciate the hard work and dedication from everyone involved.” Rob says the geometric design was a challenge: roofline contours mirror the dramatic Remarkables backdrop to the east. Five-metre high ceilings let in light and mountain views above a schist stone feature-wall, which extends to the outside. An architectural feat by DF Designs, the exterior was cleverly angled to align the 760sqm section’s asymmetric shape.

Two pavilions form the fourbedroom home either side of the entranceway. Using eco-friendly components, the cladding is Siberian Larch – a dense, fast-growing, sustainable and cost-effective timber, it produces its own natural oils and doesn’t require staining. Exterior framework was an extra-thick 140mm and Maxraft polystyrene insulation was installed between the ground and the heated concrete flooring. Expansive German aluminium windows have aesthetic timberframing on the inside and are triple glazed. Mel designed the interior to blend with nature, incorporating striking black, white and neutral themes. foodie philoso No-fuss

Sarah and Nick Freeman put Lyttleton’s London Street on the culinary map when they opened Freemans in 2006. Now they’ve brought their simple, no-fuss foodie philosophy to the heart of Beckenham with The Birdwood, which opened earlier this year. Metropol sat down with this dining duo to discuss their culinary journey and their latest offering.

You put Lyttelton’s London Street on the map with Freemans, now you’ve opened The Birdwood. What sets the two apart? The Birdwood offers all day dining with our eatery on one side during the day and our wood fired pizzeria on the other, which kicks off in the late afternoon. Our philosophy is exactly the same as Freemans, good hospitality. We believe the recipe is simple, make people feel welcome, serve great food and go above and beyond their expectations. Why do you think people have connected so strongly with what you have created here? The Birdwood is a place where we want people to feel like they are part of our culture and our family. We love knowing their names, what they like to drink, what school their children go to and how their day has been. There is nothing nicer than chatting away to a customer perched at the bar waiting for their takeaway pizza while they relax after a busy day. What are the key things that set the Birdwood aside from other dining options in the city? Our strong focus on family. It is a place where inviting booth seats in the pizzeria encourage families and their kids to pile in, eat some amazing pizza, have a few wines and feel like they have had some quality time together. We spend a lot of time as a team perfecting our craft and talking about ways to give a great hospitality experience.

What are some of your favourite menu options? In the eatery we do a great brunch. Creamy mushrooms with a crumbed egg on soft polenta is definitely a favourite. We roast our coffee in house and our takeaway coffee window is a little slice of Melbourne on the streets of Beckenham. In the pizzeria, of course pizza! Hand-made and handstretched sourdough bases that are given time to rise with good quality ingredients make, we believe, the best Italian pizza in Christchurch. We also hand-make our pasta which is a real hit with our customers. What is the most fulfilling aspect of what you do? The people we interact with every day. We are blessed with a team of people who inspire us. We respect their skill, their craft and their tireless commitment to be the best at what they do. Our customers fill our space with energy and love. This is a job we love and it is a real joy to wake up and come to work.

How did your culinary journey begin? Nick is from Poole on the south coast of England and I am from Christchurch. We met 20 years ago at a Christchurch hotel and both shared a love for great food and hospitality. Nick ran fine dining restaurants in London and quickly developed a passion for Italian cuisine.

A divine blend There are few coffee shops quite like Columbus Coffee Riccarton. For the last two years, owners Ian and Tess France, along with their team, have prided themselves on giving you the most divine blend of coffee and eats in Christchurch.

lthough attached to Westfield Mall in Riccarton, the vibe you get is totally unique. With plenty of natural light and indoor and outdoor seating, it’s just like being in your conservatory or summer house. Whether you are after a chai latte or Columbus’ own unique house blend, a barista-made hot cuppa is never far away. Neither is a smoothie, iced tea or frappe if it the day gets a tad hotter than expected. All items on the menu are made fresh each day by Ian and husband and wife team, Lindsay and Emma, with the sheer variety of options on offer impressive. Big local favourites on the menu are Smashed Avocado, Paleo Bowl and Eggs Benne Rosti with a Pork and Mushroom option available. Most items on the menu can be made gluten free on request. Talking of gluten free, Columbus’ savoury cabinet contains a specific gluten free shelf with at least six items available daily, which change on a regular basis. Other popular options include their Chocolate and Hazelnut and Slice, Orange and Almond Cakes, Cherry Ripe and a delicious Plum Friand. With the kitchen team developing a new and exciting spring menu for both brunch and lunch due out in September, it is time for you to make Columbus Coffee Riccarton your new regular.

Chasing perfection If you’re a foodie that’s always on the lookout for exceptional eats throughout the city, or you’re a hospitality hotspot chasing the perfect recipe, the Christchurch Food Chase will be right up your alley.

A

“It will create something epic for us, as a city, to look forward to every winter.”

two-week three-weekend spectacular, all in the pursuit of the perfect dish, the Christchurch Food Chase will bring together restaurants from across the city, offering them the chance to enter a meal. Residents and visitors are encouraged to sample as many dishes as possible during the chase, before voting for their favourite. “We’re bringing together food lovers of the city and encouraging Christchurch to get out and support their local establishments,” event organiser Erin Jackson explains. “We’re giving restaurants a chance to create something new – and we’re showcasing our exceptional culinary community.” Erin says there is currently nothing of this nature occurring in Christchurch or the neighbouring communities; not in terms of purpose, scale or reach. She believes Christchurch has the capacity to match highly successful examples such as ‘Wellington on a Plate’ and ‘Taste of Auckland’ which are operating nationally. The Christchurch Food Chase will offer the city a chance to celebrate in winter and highlight Christchurch’s compelling hospitality narrative; giving restaurants a chance to create something new and to showcase what makes our city so delicious. A mutually beneficial partnership, the event encourages locals and visitors alike to get in behind the hospitality sector and to support local business. “We know that we can build and excite an engaged and enthusiastic community that visits as many of the ‘Food Chase’ restaurants as possible. We see that there is an appetite for more collaborative and engaging culinary events around the city – so we’ve decided to create one ourselves. “It’ll be fun, it’ll be high energy and – we hope – it will create something epic for us, as a city, to look forward to every winter.” The Christchurch Food Chase will run across three weekends and two weeks from 24 August to 8 September 2018, featuring local restaurants, each offering a ‘Food Chase Dish’. The restaurants are encouraged to keep their dishes affordable to encourage the public to keep chasing as much as possible. For more information and to sign up, visit www.christchurchfoodchase.com. Star of the Show Star anise is the star of the culinary show with these chocolate fondant cakes with orange ice cream, adding spice to what is a fairly traditional cake.

Ingredients For the orange ice cream 300ml double cream 300ml full fat milk 1 orange, zest and 2 tbsp juice 6 egg yolks 1/2 cup caster sugar For the star anise chocolate fondant 50g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 140g dark chocolate (min. 70 percent cocoa solids), chopped, plus 40g grated 1/3 cup ground almonds 2 eggs, separated 1/2 cup cornflour 3/4 tsp freshly ground star anise 1/2 cup caster sugar 4 dark chocolate truffles

Method

F

or the orange ice cream, make a crème anglaise first. Heat the cream, milk and orange zest in a saucepan until just boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 5-10 minutes. Beat the egg yolks and sugar together until well combined. Whisk the cream mixture into the eggs, pour the mixture back into the saucepan and return to heat. Stir in the orange juice and continue to cook until the crème anglaise thickens (but not boiling). Set the crème anglaise aside to cool, then chill in the fridge. Churn two-thirds of the crème anglaise in an ice cream machine, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Transfer the

ice cream into an ice cream container and chill in the freezer until needed. Pass remaining crème anglaise through a sieve into a bowl, cover with reusable wrap and chill in the fridge until needed. For the star anise chocolate fondant, preheat the oven to 180°C and grease four ramekin dishes. Add a small amount of the grated chocolate to each, turn them to coat the sides and bottom, shaking out any excess. Bring a little water to the boil in a pan, then reduce heat until the water is simmering. Suspend a heatproof bowl over the water, not allowing the base of the bowl to touch the water. Melt the chocolate and butter together in the bowl,

then remove from the heat and whisk in the ground almonds, egg yolks, cornflour and star anise. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks form when the whisk is removed. Whisk in the sugar, a little at a time. Fold the egg white mixture into the melted chocolate mixture. Half fill the ramekins with the chocolate mixture, place a chocolate truffle on top and fill the ramekins with the remaining chocolate mixture. Place in the oven to bake for 10-15 minutes, or until risen and slightly wobbly. Sprinkle with any remaining grated chocolate and cocoa, before serving with mint leaves and orange slices.

T

he Pantone Color Institute has highlighted these two palettes from the opposite sides of the colour spectrum as the ones to look out for in 2019. The shades in ‘Cravings’ are meant to tempt the eye as well as the taste buds, featuring “spicy reds, sweet flamingo orange and rich purples”.

Colour me Clever By Melinda Collins

Pantone announced Ultra Violet as the colour of the year for 2018 and it’s continuing to play a starring role in every aspect of home design. But if you’re already looking ahead to 2019, the word on the homewares street is that ‘Cravings’ and ‘Classico’ colours will be the lay of the decorating land.

Go wild, the world is your colourful oyster The depth of “fetish foods” such as peppers and chocolate, are tempered by the warmth of a neutral cappuccino shade and a grassy green shade. Think bright red statement furniture and all the goodness of maximalist joy. Meanwhile, the hues of ‘Classico’ skew more towards the elegant, with a nod to style fundamentals. Featuring much more classic neutral tones, it is the palette where “a graceful swan white” and shades of camel pair perfectly with deep teals, grey flannels, burgundy reds and caviar blacks. So go wild, the world is your colourful oyster.

Sayonara to plastic Now that an increasing number of bars, restaurants and grocery stores are ditching single-use plastic items such as grocery bags and straws, why not think of other ways to decrease your carbon footprint and help Papatuanuku – Mother Earth? The easiest place to start is in your home.

#1.

By Paige Baxter

Use reusable bags when shopping for groceries or other items. Avoid plastic when buying meat by asking the butcher to wrap your meat in butcher paper. At home, line your rubbish bins with paper. If you can, compost your wet waste to avoid leaving a mess for bin collectors. Hot tip: Keep your reusable bags in your car!

#2.

Buy in bulk when you can. Fill up reusable containers with items such as pasta, grains and dried beans. Use jars and other reusable containers for storing leftovers and snacks instead of plastic containers or zip-lock bags. While you’re at it, store your loaf in a cloth bread bag or wrap it in cloth and pop it into a breadbox.

#3.

Say sayonara to plastic wrap and purchase alternative cloth wraps such as ones that are covered with beeswax, which acts as a sticking agent.

#4.

Trade your singleuse personal hygiene products in plastic containers for solid personal hygiene products. Cosmetic companies such as Ethique have started introducing bars of solid shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and more.

#5.

Swap your plastic toothbrush for one made from eco-friendly material, such as bamboo.

Creating next generation homes Specialising in high-end architectural new builds and renovations, James Brownie leads a team of expert builders, providing a full range of residential and commercial construction services to the highest possible standard.

T

he qualified team were hand-picked by James and have undertaken advanced, up-to-date training. Ensuring a high standard of workmanship throughout every project is vital, James says. “Our crews are experienced across all areas and we work with trusted architects, engineers and sub-contractors to provide consistency and high-quality craftmanship to every project.” One of Brownie Construction’s upand-coming projects includes a stunning residential home overlooking Coronet Peak in Queenstown, currently in design stage. “Situated at the end of a 100m driveway, the north-facing four-bedroom home will feature a loft and a two-storey garage, cedar cladding, an exposed schist chimney, and polished concrete floors throughout – with underfloor heating.”

The team has also begun work on a new two-storey home on the Cashmere Hills in Christchurch. Both projects have a focus on a ‘passive living’ style, with the use of highperformance structural insulated panels. Super-insulated and airtight, the New Zealand Made Smart Structural Insulation Panels (NZSIP) help build next-generation, healthy, energy-efficient homes. “This new technology is becoming more common, while being more environmentally friendly, you are also saving money in the long-term.” From design and pricing to completion and landscaping, Brownie Construction provides the complete package, along with excellent project management. C

hristchurch has waited six years for the 100 day blueprint to come off the plan and deliver on its promise, but the new CBD revealed in that blueprint is now moving much closer. The plan laid out by the Christchurch Central Development Unit (CCDU) in 2012 was a bold one, based on a vision of the city’s future produced by the Christchurch City Council in consultation with the public through the Share an Idea campaign. Nothing less than a truly liveable 21st central city was at the heart of that plan. It has been a long time coming but now, in 2018, we’re starting to see it happen, and it’s going to be amazing! The anchor projects – a cornerstone of the rebuild – are heading in the right direction and are poised to reinvigorate our city centre with contemporary architecture and state of the art facilities. Complementing the city’s new fabric are our heritage treasures; which I have a real passion for. After much deliberation, work to restore the Cathedral is due to get underway in coming months, while the Arts Centre restoration is in full swing. Connected by gracious Worcester Boulevard, these two Gothic Revival survivors are touchstones for the city, linking past to present. When the new central library, Tūranga, opens in the next few months, it will be the largest library in the South Island and also one of its most innovative, I’m excited to explore all that it has to offer. I think it needed to be cutting edge and hopefully it will deliver on its potential as both a digital and print hub, as well as a cultural flagship for the city.

Te Pae, Christchurch’s $475 million convention centre, is on track to open its doors in 2020 and is already taking bookings. It is exactly what is needed to bring visitors back into the city centre. By the time Te Pae is up and running, the Christchurch Town Hall restoration will also be complete with events due to be held there from 2019. Adding to the positive momentum, including progress on the new stadium and the city’s east and south frames, is the fabulous new waterfront taking shape along the Ōtākaro/Avon River. It is opening up the river for walking and cycling, with a promenade all the way from the Antigua Boat Sheds to the Margaret Mahy Playground. One of my fondest memories of Christchurch from before the earthquakes is of taking a day trip into the central city by bus with my daughters; visiting the library, having lunch at a café and wandering along the Avon River. A generation of young people have missed out on experiences such as these while Christchurch has been without a fully functioning city centre. It will be great to take the girls back into the city again, now that the blueprint is becoming a reality. Our central city has been like a broken jigsaw puzzle, but the pieces are finally coming together. Plan and reality are joining up to create an amazing liveable city, whether for working, shopping, walking, cycling or socialising. The excitement is beginning to build for what’s in store! www.caarc.co.nz Metropol August 16, 2018 93

When it comes to our slumber spaces, quality counts. After all, if the average night’s sleep is eight hours, then one sleeps for a third of one’s life.

2.

G

ranted, for many of us, eight hours of sleep is but a distant dream, which makes it even more important to favour quality over quantity in the bedroom. Because, the busier our waking lives are, the more important the role of this sacred space to help us rest and recharge. In 2018, functionality is key in the bedroom, which begs the question, how do we incorporate form and function here? For a soothing space, decorate in soothing shades of lilac and grey or blue and pink. Tactile and textured fabrics will promote comfort and sleeppromoting scents such as lavender always have a home in the bedroom. We’re taking a less is more approach to the space overall; less technology, less decorative elements and less clutter. Conservative design with modern clean lines continues to define the contemporary bedroom furniture market this year, while the wabi-sabi philosophy continues to reign supreme. An easy, carefree concept to apply, wabi-sabi is about the beauty that can be found in imperfection. Life isn’t perfect, our homes aren’t perfect – and that’s okay. We’ve put together a mood board of the things that sweet dreams are made of.

SPECIALIST DESIGNERS AND BUILDERS OF TRADITIONAL TIMBER FRAME HOUSES

Even on a gloomy, drizzly winter’s day, the view from Carl Gildea’s workplace is spectacular. Carl and his Willow Landscapes team are high on the hills above Halswell laying out a New Zealand-themed garden complete with a korushaped feature pathway and rocks of every shape and size.

“W

e were given a basic concept plan drawn up some time ago by a landscape architect,” Carl says. “And we’ve refined it and developed it into a working design. Our job has been the hard landscaping – the paths, the paving, the koru and rock features and the stone chip tracks, as well as installing an irrigation system for the native plants that the homeowner has selected.” The rocks for the garden came courtesy of the neighbouring farmer. “He told us to just help ourselves from his rock pile. That was a bit easier said than done. Getting the big ones down to the garden itself was

something of a challenge!” But for Carl, challenges and turning complex design ideas into reality are what make his job as a landscaper so interesting. Willow Landscapes has quickly become known for being able to handle all aspects of landscape design and construction, from paving, decking, fencing and building block or wooden retaining walls to laying new lawns and replanting garden beds. “We really enjoy the variety of work we do and the different locations we get to go to – everything from private homes to schools and churches.” For a free quote call Carl on 021 536 442.

ALL GOOD T All good things come to those who wait. Such is the case with Honda’s new Civic Type R. Though the Civic Type R’s history dates back over two decades, the new 2018 Type R is the first to be sold new in New Zealand. Needless to say, I couldn’t sleep the night before picking it up.

ike a cross between a transformer and an Imperial Stormtrooper, its striking looks are not just for show. Its spoiler, carbon splitter, rear diffuser, and air scoops are all functional, and blacked out 20-inch alloys housing those big Brembo brakes are pretty epic. Inside, lashings of red interior trim, seatbelts and those hip hugging sports seats are a stark reminder of Honda’s Type R heritage. The driving position is spot on

and, despite that gargantuan rear wing, rear visibility is just like a Civic, in other words, great. Along with the usual infotainment accoutrements, the Type R allows you to cycle through a variety of menus depicting your boost pressure, the G-forces generated by accelerating and braking, and you can even record your lap times when on track. Under the bonnet lies a 2.0-litre

turbocharged VTEC four-cylinder engine boosting power to 228kW and 400Nm of torque. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, it is a real peach. Driving through suburbia, the Type R is a doddle and has surprisingly good ride quality for a hot hatch. Plus, indicate left and you can view your blind spot on the screen via a camera hidden in the passenger wing mirror. Type R purists more used to the

screaming naturally aspirated on/off power of previous models, may scoff at the progressive power delivery of the new car, but that turbo in this writer’s opinion, is a welcome presence when commuting. However, select R+ mode and the Type R goes completely nuts. At full throttle above 4,500rpm, you find the horizon rapidly and you will reach the national limit from a standstill in 5.7 seconds. The six-speed box is very slick and each down change is met with computer-controlled blip of the throttle, to keep the changes race car quick. In the corners, the Type R’s Adaptive Damping System is constantly talking to the suspension, to ensure you have maximum stability, and the Limited Slip Diff means the dreaded torque steer, which plagues many FWD performance cars, is non-existent. Add all this together and you will be devouring bits of bendy bitumen quicker than just about anything. Small wonder the Type R holds the lap record for FWD cars around the Nurburgring at 7 minutes 43 seconds. With this new model, those smart cookies in Honda’s engineering department have created not only a worthy addition to the Type R lineage, but a driver’s dream. Plus, you still get all the real-world practicality of a Civic, and at $59,990, it undercuts its main European rivals considerably. All in all, without doubt the most exciting FWD car I’ve ever driven.

genius Engineering

The Honda NSX is not everyone’s first thought when it comes to a super sports car, but for those in the know, it’s up there amongst the very best. Launched at the 1989 Chicago Motor Show, the NSX (New Sports Cars eXperimental) was Japan’s first mid-engine production supercar aimed squarely at the likes of Ferrari and Porsche. ombining low slung aerodynamic lines, a screaming VTEC V6 engine producing between 201kW and 216kW of power, a lightweight aluminium body and design input by the late great Ayrton Senna, the NSX appealed to the enthusiast drivers of the day, who weren’t phased about badge prestige. This 1995 example, on loan for a day by Dutton Garage, was a rare chance to get up close and personal with a cemented member of Honda’s greatest hits album. Get into the NSX for the first time and you quickly notice how sumptuous the cabin is. The leather clad seats offer plenty of lateral support and levels of comfort usually found on something with twice as many doors. The driving position is low slung though head room is a tad restrictive. Rear visibility is very generous, thanks to the F16 fighter jet inspired cockpit. Turn the key and the 3.2 litre VTEC V6 growls into life before purring comfortably at idle. Moving off is more of a workout than expected due to the lack of power steering and laughable turning circle. Around town the NSX is extremely usable. Once the steering lightens up, you are quickly slicing through traffic with ease. However, once you plant boot on the

open road, Honda’s engineering genius becomes all too real. While not rapid and sharp by today’s standards, the NSX is still a proper giggle factory. Thanks to the blood curdling howl of that amazing V6 engine, all the way up to its 8,000 rpm redline, short shifting via the short throw bolt action rifle-esque five-speed gearbox is seldom practiced. As spine tingling its straight-line oomph and noise is, the NSX plays its ace card when those straights turn into fast, tight corners. The NSX tracks well and true, the lack of power steering means that steering feedback is quick and communicative. Having the Senna developed chassis on hand means you can devour tight hairpins at an alarming rate. Simply stand on the anchors, down-shift to second, turn in and you rocket out of every bend grinning from ear to ear with that torrent of symphonic bliss echoing behind you. The NSX was never a sales success for Honda, with customers rarely exceeding triple figures during each year of its 15-year life. Despite this, its exclusivity, real world practicality and thrill-a-minute driving experience, add up to one hell of a package. The Honda NSX is not perfect but shows that you don’t need a flash badge to make a proper supercar.

A little beast By Nicholas Henare

John Cooper was born 17 July, 1923 so there was no better excuse to grab the new Mini Cooper S Hatch SE to see what it could do. When John Cooper and Sir Alec Issigonis sketched out the initial design on a table cloth in 1956, they really hit on what would become an iconic automobile.

Agile is an understatement

rom 1964-1967 it went on to win international races, including three wins at Monte Carlo – no small feat for such a little beast. Growing up with the 1969 movie, The Italian Job, the first thing I wanted to do was test its ‘Go Kart’ style abilities, so I hit the hills. Agile is an understatement. It’s a six-speed manual transmission, 141 kW nimble mover. Louis Warburton from Christchurch Mini had set the Halo lighting to flare as a rev-metre and the entire interior lighting system was very impressive. The 8.8-inch touch screen has a split-screen option, allowing your passenger to use the screen while you use it to focus on the drive. My two sons loved it. I’m not sure if it was its low centre of gravity or just its incredibly stable power, servotronic speed related steering, but the handling on uphill and downhill corners was stunning, handling everything I threw at it with ease. These days bespoke versions of the car you want are pretty much stock standard but with the Mini Cooper S, three-door hatch version, I really don’t see the need for adapting the standard. With the air intakes in the bumper and the bonnet,

rear apron diffuser, central twin pipe exhausts and custom rear spoiler with the metallic Satellite Grey paint job, 17-inch alloys, there are 15 variations on rims alone, and lounge leather seating, it was just too darn cute. The interior cabin is simple and stylish with a quality finish. The innovative technology built into the navigation system and the LED headlights driving assistant system were the only things I didn’t spend enough time investigating; I can see they’re great, but I was just having to much fun driving it! There’s not much difference in room between the three-door and the five-door, so it really comes down to convenience when choosing between the two models. John Cooper’s son, Michael Cooper started the John Cooper Works to maintain the integrity of Mini moving forward and its alliance with BMW means that Mini has a character of its own, with the integrity of solid background engineering. Looking where the brand is now and how the performance was on my little drive, I really think it has everything right. It’s a fun car, for people who want to have fun driving it.

NIP AND TU Automotive

You have got to admit, Mazda has a real knack for giving us great all-round cars in a variety of segments – the CX5 is no exception. Since the original was launched in 2012, the CX5 left so many of Mazda’s national clientele, and motoring scribes like yours truly for that matter, utterly smitten. This was down to a great blend of willing engines, refinement, technology and value.

A GREAT BLEND OF WILLING ENGINES, REFINEMENT, TECHNOLOGY AND VALUE

F

(BSM) and Traffic Sign Recognition. Hop inside and you notice the sheer visibility front and rear, thanks to a higher driving position and smaller A-pillars. While taller folk may find it a squeeze in the back, there is still plenty of room to slob out for most. Quality and refinement has been a CX5 hallmark for years and its business as usual in 2018. Every switch feels solid and well built. The infotainment system and its features are also easy to understand and operate. On the move, the CX5 is totally unique amongst its competitors. There is little to no road noise and the Cylinder Deactivation at low speed is not noticeable at all. In fact, you would think it wasn’t there. Ride quality is supple and comfortable too. Steering is a tad vague but still manages to be direct. At high rpm, the 2.5-litre petrol sounds harsh, but quickly settles down to a reassuring hum at speed. Also, the AWD system works hand in hand with engine data and wheel speed to ensure you have plenty of grip on every road surface. Prices for the CX5 start at $39,475 for the entry point GSX 2WD. Not flawless, but will certainly leave plenty of its competitors playing catch up in years to come.

or 2018 Mazda has built on that winning formula to great effect. The CX5 has undergone a sleek stylistic nip and tuck. This has been achieved by lower centre of gravity, a wider, cleaner grille and thinner LED head and taillights, giving a more powerful stance than before. Under the bonnet you get a multitude of engines to choose from, in either FWD or i-ACTIV AWD. These range from the 2 and 2.5-litre petrol units, to the 2.2 litre diesel producing 129kW. My test car was the range-topping 2.5-litre petrol (140KW) with Mazda’s new Cylinder Deactivation Technology. This system allows the engine to shut off two of the four cylinders when not needed, ie. traffic or low speed parking etc. All engines are coupled to Mazda’s silky smooth SKYACTIVE transmission. This contains a new shift logic programme which will predict the driver’s intentions based on throttle or vehicle and engine speed, ensuring that each shift is perfectly matched to however you drive. In terms of safety, with the new CX5 you are well catered for. On both GSX and range topping limited models you get i-ACTIVSENSE technologies with Advanced Smart City Brake Support Forward (ASCBS-F), Blind Spot Monitoring
