ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. Generating billions of dollars per annum in New Zealand, fashion is the untameable beast at the heart of consumer culture. The chameleon like nature of the industry keeps loyalists to 'what's hot and what's not' on their toes, and leaves the rest of us who consider ourselves a 'work in progress' rather perplexed. All of this 'threads and kicks' talk has inspired some nostalgic and rather cringeinducing memories for me as I reflect on my style – or rather unstylish evolution. It would be difficult to determine which of the styles I donned as a kid of the eighties and nineties eras deserves the 'most heinous' fashion faux pas title. My obsession with unflattering fabrics; oversized, wideleg jeans, and tie-dye leggings with slouch socks spring to mind as does a denim 'cowgirl' styled dress covered in sequins, which I picked up second-hand shopping with my Mum and wore to the point of its extinction. That was a sad day in our household. I also can't forget the pink, patent leather heels that my friend and I wore on ‘Quality not quantity’ has always been girls' nights out. So although I don’t get to spend 100 per cent of my waking hours with my babies, the time I do get to be with them is so much more valuable – and higher quality – than ever before. I love my family, but I love my job too.

It was a stunning day as people gathered on the grassy knoll of Kerrs Reach to witness walkers and cyclists coming from either end of the transitional city-to-sea riverside trail, Te Ara Ōtākaro (the Avon Trail) be piped into the welcoming ceremony of the October 15 Meet in the Middle Event.

ayor Lianne Dalziel, who led the trek from the city end, gave a heart-warming opening address followed by a regatta in which Canterbury and Union Rowing Clubs, Arawa Canoe Club, Aoraki Dragons and Te Waka Pounamu, all participated. With the support of Christchurch City Council, the Ministry of Social Development, Regenerate Christchurch, City Care Limited, and Sport Canterbury as a key partner, Meet in the Middle was led by the AvonŌtākaro Network, whose spokesperson, Evan Smith, says that Sunday’s event felt pretty fantastic. “The weather was perfect. It had a great vibe – a good family event where parents could relax with their children and enjoy everything on offer.” The partially opened riverside trail that runs along at least one bank from Barbadoes Street bridge to Pages Road bridge is designed to be highly accessible for walkers, joggers, runners and cyclists. “This was something we’ve always wanted; to create the backbone for community re-connection and reengagement with our blue and green spaces,” Evan says. “The trail provides time out for health, recreation and healing, but more importantly, people get to see their city healing as well.” For more information go to www.avonotakaronetwork.co.nz.

he well-established company has been no stranger to accolades and was recently recognised at the 2017 TAANZ National Travel Industry Awards. Senior Consultant Tanya Cross was one of three finalists selected for Best Retail Travel Consultant and the business won the prestigious ‘Best Brand Retail Single Location’ award. “You can’t get any better than that,” says Melissa, who has been in the industry 28 years, taking over the business in 2001. “I’m so proud of my team; it’s an amazing achievement and very satisfying to have our hard work recognised. Being the overall winner nationwide is also a huge accolade, especially competing against much bigger companies – becoming finalists in two categories is pretty impressive for a small team of six!” The success of YOU Travel Ferrymead comes down to passion for the industry. “Our team are passionate and the knowledge and experience within our four walls is huge. Our clients make what we do an absolute pleasure. It’s all about listening to them and creating everlasting memories unique to the individuals. ble following Fashion, no matter which way you look at it, is a highly covetable commodity, globally valued at somewhere in the vicinity of $3 trillion.

O

n a local level, its constant evolution is enough to make one’s sartorial head spin, as its fashionable followers grapple with the what’s hot and what’s not style statements made each season.

I imagine fashion would be an all-consuming career, something you live and breathe all the time, how much time do you spend researching and following fashions and trends? It is an all-consuming career; fashion and inspiration are literally everywhere and understanding what is happening in the marketplace is crucial. With Pinterest, Instagram and Snapchat so readily available, as well as several amazing online platforms, the evolution of fashion is so fast-paced that I would easily spend an hour each evening researching.

If there was ever a career which could keep you on your toes, this is it. And yet, Ballantynes’ head buyer Megan McKee takes it all in her stylish stride. Take us back to the beginning of your career, how did this all begin? My buying career started when I was visual merchandising for the fashion team here at Ballantynes. The Head Buyer at the time shoulder tapped me and said she thought I had a good eye and she would like me to take on the swimwear category to learn the ropes. I’ve never looked back. I still have a real passion for swimwear and I learnt so much while buying and merchandising the store. It was a great way to keep in touch with the customer and allowed me to grow and develop both creatively and analytically. Can you tell us what your role involves as the Head Buyer for Ballantynes? My role is to lead the buying team to deliver Ballantynes’ vision of sourcing exclusive brands and quality merchandise that is interesting, innovative and beautiful, from our brand partners across the globe, ensuring we are striving to always be looking for the next exciting range, whilst continuing to build our stable of successful brands. It must be incredible getting to establish relationships with some of the country’s most successful designers! What are some of the other incredible parts of your job? New Zealand fashion designers are incredibly talented and are genuinely all lovely, humble people. It is an amazing pleasure to work so closely building their brands within Ballantynes. The other incredible parts of my role are the discovery process (finding a range that you know is perfect for our customer and setting a strategy for how you are going to build it), trend forecasting, travelling and meeting innovative people in the industry

What are some of the up and coming trends we can look forward to in the fashion realm? The most stunning red palette has emerged for high summer and is going to be big for autumn/winter. Women’s suiting is making a come back in luxe tweeds and herringbone. Blazers feature more pronounced shoulders and are matched back with elegant trousers for an everyday uniform. Accessories and footwear is all in the details with stunning embroidery, frills and studs on the horizon for autumn. Where do you draw your inspiration from? Vogue and Instagram primarily. I do really still love to read through a glossy Vogue magazine even in this digital overload era.

WALKING

THE WALK By Céline Gibson

Are you an artistic walker… a nosy walker… or just a fair-dinkumall-out-full-throttle walker? If you fit any (or all) of these categories then head over to the Banks Peninsula Walking Festival 2017 because there’s a walk waiting just for you.

elebrating its fifth birthday this year – a celebration in itself – the BPWF (originally the Lyttelton Walking Festival) started on November 4 and goes through until November 26. Co-ordinator of the walking festival Sue Church says there are 30 walks encompassing the Banks Peninsula region. “Around 330 people took part last year, and this year looks equally good, but there’s plenty of tickets left for these fabulous walks.” They are led by local guides keen to inform and inspire throughout the walk. If you’re uncertain as to which will best suit your fitness level, view the Banks Peninsula Walking Festival 2017 Programme at www.bpwalks.co.nz where walks are listed as easy walk, walk, tramp or route, with estimated durations also provided for each. Like any walk longer than an hour, it’s important to have sturdy walking shoes or tramping boots, warm clothing, water, sun-hat, sunscreen, a waterproof layer, plus lunch and snacks. Walking poles are strongly advised. “What’s great about these walks is that there’s something for everyone,” Sue says. With three weekends left, check out the BPWF 2017 Programme then book yourself and your favourite people the best walk of your lives! Book through www.eventfinda.co.nz, find Banks Peninsula Walking Festival on Facebook or email bpwalkingfestival@gmail.com for more information.

CREATIVE COUTURE Tai Tapu may be far removed from the catwalks of Milan and Paris, but it’s certainly one step closer after hosting Art Couture NZ last month.

O

rganiser Kim Strange may not have a fashion background but she got hooked after entering a wearable arts competition with a friend last year. “We enjoyed the experience so much that we decided to form a competition here in Christchurch to enable people to have an opportunity to create a wearable piece of art,” she says, joining forces with Ros March, Lee Parker and Judy Sachdeva to create Art Couture NZ. Held at The Vineyard at Rossendale, just outside Tai Tapu, designers competed across four categories – the open category, a recycled goods section called Here We Go Again, a themed section called Hardware focusing on hardware store items, and Sow’s Ear. Originating from the saying ‘make a silk

purse from a sow’s ear’, entrants in the Sow’s Ear category were provided with a bag of identical materials ranging from cotton and tulle, to CDs, tubing, foam ovals and doilies. “The materials could be painted, dyed and refigured with the only additional things allowed to be used being glitter and other materials to enhance and decorate,” Kim explains. “We were amazed at the different garments created from the same materials.” The judges in the competition were Kelly Morrison from NZ Models and Talent and artists Loretta Sloan, Steve Henderson and Blanche Fryer. NZ Models and Talent also provided models for any designers that didn’t have one.

Four students were also amongst the 30 entries. Rose Carrick, an 11-year-old from Leeston created Queen of Cards; Zan Todd, a 10-year-old from Prebbleton created Fight of Doom and Amie Parker entered her Futuristic Dress Code. The last entrant was a team of year 10 students from Hillmorton High who made The Runaway Bride. “Each of these young designers gained ideas and inspiration from both seeing the other designs and talking with the more experienced designers. They are the future of New Zealand design, so it was important to us that they be given the opportunity.” Kim aims to make Art Couture NZ an annual event.

‘REAL’ IN REAL ESTATE

The fact that three of the Merivale team of New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty (NZSIR) have been manning a pop-up stand in Merivale Mall from October 16-22 goes some way towards illustrating the company’s passionate role in the local community.

T

he team is getting out and about in the Merivale area, with visitors always welcomed at the office at 182 Papanui Road as well. Two new sales members, Tania McCrone and Pippa Macklin have been introducing themselves and getting to know everyone in the heart of this community. Along with Sales Manager Bob Eastgate, they will be instrumental in the local community moving forward. Although the growth and impact of technology has had a positive effect on the real estate industry overall, Sales Manager Bob Eastgate recognises that the level of face to face contact with the customer is at an alltime low, as a direct result of its influence. Which is why he wants to ensure this growing team are the face of the business. He believes passionately in the combination of such a strong nationwide real estate brand with the ‘above and beyond’ levels of service of the growing Merivale office; a combination that will ensure NZSIR grows to be a market leader within the local market, very quickly. Bob already has a wealth of experience in all facets of the real estate industry under his belt, with a large database of both business and personal contacts, and a reputation as an outstanding Manager, Auctioneer,

Real Estate Trainer and Mentor of sales associates. Having previously developed successful real estate sales teams, combined with his industry knowledge, experience and commitment, as well as a large pool of contacts across both the business and rugby fraternities, Bob is confident that he can not only provide prospective licensees with an exceptional environment to learn and succeed, but also that he can continue NZSIR’s growth within the Canterbury market. The strong foundations of the company were laid in 1976, when the real estate company was first launched from the same passion that saw the establishment of Sotheby’s Auction House – the world’s fourth oldest auction house in continuous operation, dating back more than 200 years. Sotheby’s International Realty continues to maintain a commanding presence in the global marketplace, representing some of the world’s most unique properties. The New Zealand branch of Sotheby’s International Realty was founded with a Queenstown office in 2005 by Mark Harris and Julian Brown and is still privately owned, run and operated. There are now 18 offices throughout the country, with expansion planned for key locations across New Zealand. Metropol November 09, 2017 19

ow Stan Walker has put his equestrian skills to the test in his latest foray on the filmset of The Stolen, which is released in cinemas on November 23. Stan has featured in several movies, including Taika Waititi’s record-breaking Hunt for the Wilderpeople, but describes his role on Kiwi western The Stolen, as one of the most challenging he’s ever taken, after being attracted to the film by his character Matai – a strong and ruthless Maori guide with long hair, a beard and facial tattoos. Set at the time of the gold rush in the 1860s, the storyline focuses on “a mother’s love for her child”. Charlotte Lockton must find her kidnapped son, navigating the untamed New Zealand wilderness; a world she doesn’t know, on the edge of danger with every heartbeat. “She would do anything and go anywhere for her baby,” Stan says. Stan also re-released his single ‘Find You’ for the film’s soundtrack. Ferrymead Heritage Park doubled as a set and production base, with a purposebuilt saloon in St Martins one of the key sets for the $5.8 million colonial adventure story. The intensive month-long shoot took actors and crew as far as Ashley Gorge, Little River, Birdling’s Flat, Arthur’s Pass and Waikuku Beach. Stan says the beautiful Canterbury scenery was a standout of his time here. The biggest production to be filmed exclusively in Canterbury since Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures was released in 1994, The Stolen was headed by London-based Cantabrian filmmaker Emily Corcoran. It’s taken her eight years to get the film off the ground, eventually raising the funding through complex co-production deals and bringing British director Niall Johnson and international stars Alice Eve (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean) to Canterbury.

The lives of our furry loved ones are priceless, and Ourvets St Albans’ decision to purchase a CT machine has been crucial in returning tail wags and purrs across the South Island.

O

ne very fortunate five-year-old Huntaway-cross called Boy was recently doing what many dogs love to do – playing fetch-the-stick with his owner. Two days later he had a huge painful swelling on the side of his neck and jaw. “Boy was very uncomfortable,” says veterinarian Dr Richard Lucy. “He had become very sick, very quickly. We were concerned that a piece of stick may have broken off and may be deeply imbedded in the tissues of his throat.” Acute infection was escalating – time was of the essence. “Unlike bones or metal, a stick doesn’t show up easily on x-rays – it would just look like tissue. Especially in the area where it was lodged, there are vital structures such as veins, arteries, nerves, the trachea and oesophagus. It is not a place you want to be blindly searching around in.” The Computed Tomography (aka CT) machine takes multiple cross-section images – seven images per millimetre of tissue – then puts them together to create a 3D image. As the only animal-specific CT machine in the South Island, veterinarians refer pets to Ourvets for their diagnostic needs. Using CTs, surgeons can pinpoint the precise location of any abnormality and tissue change, so an exact plan of action can be decided. The technology is invaluable for identifying foreign bodies, nasal and dental problems, tumours and joint issues. The scanning process itself on Boy took under half an hour, then veterinary surgeon Dr John Ingles performed the delicate task of removing the 5cm piece of stick, without any damage to the surrounding vital structures. In a few short days, Boy was back to his bouncy self, playing catch again in the backyard with a very relieved owner – but this time with a ball. Ourvets St Albans is located at 98 Cranford Street. Visit www.ourvets.co.nz or phone 03-355 6747. Open Monday-Friday 7.30am-7pm, Saturday and Sunday 8.30am-4pm – including most public holidays.

A CENTENARIAN

CELEBRATION By Céline Gibson

At the time of her birth in 1917, World War I was killing millions while, in Christchurch, the city council had elected its first female councillor and 94 years later, the February 2011 earthquake saw her uproot to Wellington.

D

uring her lifetime, Sally Burrage (born Selina Emily Aldridge) has undoubtedly lived through some of the most defining events of the 20th and 21st centuries. In October, Sally returned to Christchurch for her centenarian celebrations. Held at her beloved Canterbury Museum, she was thrilled to catch up with friends and colleagues. Like many others, Canterbury Museum’s Curatorial Manager Sarah Murray is in awe of Sally. “Technically, Sally’s our oldest team member. If I could achieve half the things she has, I’d be happy.” After marrying John Burrage in 1946 and having five children, Sally took up

teaching positions at New Brighton and South New Brighton schools. In the 1950s, she joined the Canterbury Museum Archaeology Society and took part in surveying and digs for nearly 50 years. In 1974, she headed the Museum’s Junior Club, precursor to today’s museum Explorer Club. From 1982, Sally went on the payroll and, in 2001, she was made Emeritus Curator (the museum’s first Emeritus Curator). Museum Director, Anthony Wright, says the youthful acting and looking Sally is truly remarkable. “While she retired from the Museum in February 2011, she still helps us with queries and support. Sally’s full of energy and has as an enquiring mind as ever.”

CBD’S AWARDWINNING ARTISTRY By Melinda Collins

The central city is wearing its art on its very colourful sleeve, as street art continues to transform blank walls where adjoining buildings once stood.

B

ut the latest addition to the city scape is about so much more than an attractive aesthetic, with Artist Tess Sheerin’s fur seal on Durham St North designed to highlight marine pollution. Just one part of a five-city giant mural

tour that started in 2015, Tess has also produced a mural of a rainbow trout in Queenstown, a crested penguin in Dunedin, a crayfish in Auckland and a bottlenose dolphin in Wellington. “This tour has been so effective in

raising awareness of marine environmental pollution which is threatening our iconic fish and marine life,” she says. “Rubbish washes out to the ocean and animals are drinking up a sludge of plastics they cannot break down. I hope these murals up and down the country will make people sit up and consider these important environmental issues.” The positive contribution the body of works has made to the community has been recognised by Canon which has awarded her a Canon Community Grant of $5000 worth of Canon equipment of her choice, after she impressed judges with the uniqueness of her project. Tess says cities need large murals to brighten and tidy up some areas and her New Zealand pollution awareness project will make cities more connected with their communities. “Legal public street art murals all over the world are being commissioned by local business owners, homeowners and even city councils. Public art has the power to change the landscape of their communities,” Tess says. “By commissioning and supporting an exterior wall of a building to become a canvas helps improve the look of the building and the surrounding area. It discourages tagging and becomes a destination for the community while contributing to a rise in property values. Her works have featured in many exhibitions in the United Kingdom, Christchurch and Queenstown, where she is based. Tess completed a large mural in Riccarton in 2012 called Hope Bear and Giraffing Around on Liverpool Street in 2013.

ne of only five local members of the ‘Approved Panel Physicians for New Zealand Immigration’, Immigration Express is unique, with its sole focus being immigration medicals and that it is open 10 hours per day, Monday to Friday. Co-Owner with Dr John Hyndman, Daphne Durning, says they try hard to minimise prices because often new immigrants are trying to get established on a budget. The fee is $455, and that is the final total, with no hidden or extra costs. It covers the necessary x-rays, blood tests,

and you won’t find staff in whites or scrubs – it’s not a clinical environment, instead it is calm, friendly and professional. “The very best part of our work is making people feel relaxed in what can be a stressful time, because the client’s immigration status often depends on the outcome of their medical exam.” Immigration Express opened its new premises in June this year at 71 Bealey Avenue. There is plenty of free off-street parking and the refurbished interior is warm, clean and spacious.

his is a real game changer,” says Ronald Sluiter of OrthodontiX, which is the first practitioner in New Zealand to reach ‘diamond’ status – referring to the completion of more than 151 Invisalign cases per year. “Life is complicated enough for teenagers, and Invisalign is an effective, beneficial option. They are virtually invisible, so it’s a lot less imposing on teenage life. Cleaning is so much easier because aligners are removable.” One of many other advantages of Invisalign is patients no longer have to suffer uncomfortable wires and painful adjustments. The price is also reasonable, Ronald says. “Now that Invisalign has gone mainstream and we do so many treatments, we are able to offer it to our patients for a much more affordable price – very close to the price of traditional braces.” Offering a wealth of experience, along with the latest technology and developments, Ronald has been in the orthodontic industry for three and a half decades. “I’ve been running clinics for more than 30 years and I still love it. It’s wonderful what technology can do and it’s a real privilege to work with teenagers.” Visit the largest Invisalign provider in the country at OrthodontiX with clinics in Merivale, Cashmere and Ashburton. FAST

New Zealand fashion Designer Vicky Taylor tells Metropol about local buying habits and considered consumerism.

You currently stock international brand Barbara I Gongini, with more big names dropping in intervals. What place do global brands have in challenging New Zealand’s fashion scene? We love the points of difference these brands all bring to our New Zealand landscape; some are fun and vibrant, others dark and moody. The unique fabrications, amazing quality and their different designer handwriting are all very special qualities. We only bring in very limited numbers, so we will have new selections from these brands popping up in store regularly. What are New Zealand shoppers like compared to overseas shoppers? Our casual lifestyles and relaxed attitudes shape our buying habits. New Zealand shoppers are intellectual; they want to know the story behind the design, not just ‘does this colour look good on me?’ We love this more considered approach. I have clients today who shopped with me on the day I opened my first store. They have travelled my journey and we often catch up instore. This more intimate relationship with clients differs greatly to big cities where designer brands become a status symbol. In many of these cities it is known you should dress 25 per cent better than your work colleagues to succeed, luckily in New Zealand we do not live by those pressures. You’re a proponent of sustainable fashion and considered consumerism. Can you tell us a bit about what this means to you? The fashion cycle has become faster. Two collections a year increased to four, then new drops appear every month. Now big fast fashion brands put in new stock every week. This sadly comes at a cost. The wastage is huge. Transparency in all aspects of our manufacturing is important. I hand select my Italian fabrics each year from the big fabric producing areas of Italy. We do not see pollution, or blue or red dye in the rivers in this part of the world. It does cost more – but we also do not harm the world as much. I am a staunch supporter of made in New Zealand, and when you buy these garments from me, five hands or five companies all help us make each garment. So you are not only supporting me, you are helping keep five other skilled New Zealand businesses. Slow fashion is about upholding sustainable principles and buying one piece that you love, wearing it with love and then recycling through a vintage store, because the quality lasts.

“A

As long as you’re out exploring, your nature’s gym could be anything from getting up in the hills, out in the city, on your bike or walking the dog,” Merrell Riccarton Store Manager Mark Hogan says. Outdoor fitness activities provide people with a much-desired escape from

the pressure of busy schedules and the opportunity to connect with friends, appreciating nature while exercising. Shoes for nature’s gym are athletic and versatile for activity anywhere outside. The Agility Peak Flex offers protection and traction on technical trails. The Bare Access Flex is versatile; a hybrid for pavement and dirt, it can handle anything nature’s gym throws at it. The Trail Glove

Merrell challenges you to trade in your indoor gym – the four walls, stale air and static views – for the fresh air, natural obstacles and plenty of space to recharge. Be brave, but not ridiculous – There is a fine line between looking pulled together and appearing like a circus act. Choose one strong focal point for your outfit and play the rest down. This is the mistake that many Fashion in the Fields entrants make – overdoing the finishing touches to the point of Pleasantville. Is it your hat or outfit that is to be the key feature? Choose one; it doesn’t need to be both.

RACEWEAR CHECKLIST 3. It’s here – the racing season and all the bubbles and sparkle it brings. This is probably the one time of year in Canterbury that have the runway to really dress up. And, while the big New Zealand race days are just around the corner, here are some final things to consider before getting out of bed for Cup Week.

Buy shoes that last the distance – On any given race day, you will spend most of the time standing. And if you are in the grassed carpark area, this means no to stilettos or anything with too much height. Instead focus on a block heel with cushioning in both the heel and sole. Trelise Cooper Drape of Things Dress, $499

Dress for the weather – This is critical with our topsy turvy Canterbury weather. Race days are famous for lousy weather, so ensure you think about a dress-coat option in case your beautiful dress doesn’t see the light of day.

Don’t feel the need to match your bag, hat AND shoes Picking two out of three is enough. Racewear can appear over-done and over-styled if it’s all too matchy matchy. Co-ordinating your hat and bag or shoes and bag or hat and dress is enough to look polished.

Up-switched Witchery and Cue stores have just dusted off their removal trolleys and are back to their previous mall spaces. Shoe and accessory-lovers need to hustle down to Merivale, as the current summer range is dreamily expansive. Sandals now bear scanty relation to the standard-wear of the past. They might be patent; they’re sometimes aerated and holey. They’re often architectural, padded or ankle-supporting for the distance walker. For clothes, whimsical wildlife prints or plain colour-saturated pieces are noticeable themes. As is lace in any hue. It’s now possible to buy pelican-themed brogues on a pink backdrop, red velvet shortie jump-suits, incredibly interestingly-sleevedanything, or kimono-styled separates. Wide, skirt-like jeans mix with narrower-leg varieties and longish skirts of all incarnations. Beach cover-ups are often exotic, embroidered affairs in crushable cotton. Choose between long and floaty or short and snappy. With sartorially prescriptive eras firmly in the past, you can be a summer chameleon. A trip to Merivale is fast-acting proof.

MEDICINE OPTIONS At 41, Sunny Qin was, in her own words, “quite old for pregnancy” when, two months on, she went to her GP who confirmed she was showing signs of a miscarriage. She was told nothing could be done.

unny, however, refused to give up. She and husband, Chinese Medicine Doctor, Thomas Lin devised a plan. Sunny went on total bed-rest and took a course of traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) prepared by Thomas. “After four weeks my body was perfect, my pregnancy was perfect, everything was perfect,” she says. Sunny and Thomas’ beautiful little boy recently turned two! “Quite a few Kiwi ladies come to the clinic for pregnancy problems. TCM can help those who might want to get pregnant or who, during pregnancy, may experience problems,” Thomas says. Thomas has nearly 30 years’ experience in Chinese medical practise. He is well known and respected in Christchurch. His Riccarton Road clinic has approximately twenty thousand clients on file, and many GPs refer patients to it. Sunny and Thomas would like to help more people with Chinese medicine. An exciting development is the establishment of the New Zealand Chinese Medicine Charitable Trust. When the trust was set up, they received a $10,000 donation from “a generous Kiwi gentleman who had cancer and for nine years has been receiving great benefit from TCM,” Sunny says. He would “like to help people who need Chinese medical treatment.” All TCM treatments can be funded by the trust. Terms and conditions apply, but “it is an important opportunity to help more people benefit from and understand better the possible benefits of TCM,” Thomas explains. Fashionable

FUNCTIONAL FOOTWEAR ‘Fashionable functional footwear’ is the catch phrase at Feet First Podiatry. It’s heaven on earth for feet – a podiatry clinic selling stylish shoes.

F

rankie4 is the latest brand at Feet First Podiatry’s Shoe Room. Smarter than your average shoe, having been designed in Australia by a podiatrist and physiotherapist, the soles have contoured flexibility and luxurious cushioning. From gorgeous high heels to ultra-comfy ballet flats, they look the part and last the distance – ensuring the wearer does too! “People don’t have cookie-cutter feet,” says Owner and Director Charlotte Russell who, after more than 30 years in podiatry, knows the importance of perfect-fitting shoes. The Revere range of chic summer sandals have adjustable widths that can also incorporate orthotics. Tāos sandals have wedges for stability and comfort, and the Vionic brand integrates arch support into the Kiwi-jandal style.

Orthotic-friendly brands, Propét and Anodyne come in both men’s and women’s styles. Customers can have the clinic’s professional podiatrists fitting their shoes for a comfortable and proper fit. A voucher toward a new pair also makes a great gift. However, summer shoes deserve pretty toes, and there is an answer for persistent fungal infections that really works. Clearanail uses painless microscopic pinpricks to the nail bed, allowing anti-fungal liquid to penetrate rather than just sit on the nail. After a treatment procedure at the clinic, toe nails can show visible improvement in four to six weeks. “It’s a simple solution to a complex problem.” Step into Feet First Podiatry 37 Main South Road, Upper Riccarton or see the shoe collection at feetfirst.co.nz. gold By Melinda Collins

ALL THAT GLITTERS IS

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but few can rebuff the illustrious affections of gold.

A

s an element, it is immutable, neither tarnishing nor corroding and, when it comes to our wardrobes, gold continues to shine. A signifier of quality and symbol of wealth, metallics are this season’s sartorial golden child, putting the Midas touch on our wardrobes this spring/summer. From accessories to outerwear, and even the face that pulls it all together, it’s the gold-standard of style. And, although gold is synonymous with evening wear, this season’s must-have has no limitations – you can turn heads morning, night and everything in between.

THE MAGIC OF AN MC By Kineta Booker

Do yourself a favour – organise a good Master of Ceremonies for your wedding. Often they’re considered as just the person who introduces the reception speeches, but their role is broader and more important than that.

Your MC is the one who wrangles people for photos, they engage with your guests so everyone knows exactly what’s happening next and they ensure everything is running to time. Big job, huh, that’s why your choice of MC is imperative.

How to choose an MC

An MC’s role

• Great with people, engages easily • Confident, but possibly nervous at the same time, so reassure them that they are exactly what you want • Is great at time management (or can, at least, follow a set of your instructions from the clock on their cellphone) • Won’t have too many drinks that they end up in the corner, or become centre of attention for the rest of the day.

• Gathers people for photos (remember, it’s your wedding, so not your job to be bossy) • Oversees afternoon activities, refreshments, etc – that they’re running to time. The guests will appreciate having someone they recognise, and can ask questions of, while newlyweds are away having photographs taken • Staying in contact with the couple – so the MC knows when to gather people at reception • Introducing bridal party, running the speeches, playing fun games, and keeping everyone entertained and happy

It’s basically like having an entertainment co-ordinator who is also your friend, but sometimes, couples outsource their MC. There are professional MCs in Canterbury and, more often than not, you can hire your celebrant to be your MC, too. 44 November 09, 2017 Metropol

INDUSTRY Perfect ACHIEVEMENT

Becoming a hairdresser meant so much to V For Hair and Beauty owner Vicki Ogden-O’Fee, she vowed to do whatever she could to help others train and qualify. V For Hair and Beauty/Vj Barbers Merivale is celebrating their 50th apprentice becoming qualified.

A

chievements like this are unheard of, as most top hair salons only have one or two hairdressers qualify every couple of years. Few can claim to have trained and had qualified fifty. “You invest in people and treat them well in the hope they’ll continue hairdressing with you after they graduate. The whole team benefits from training so many hairdressers and barbers – it keeps us all up with the changing hairstyles, products and technology,” Vicki says. “You must have a deep passion to become a qualified hairdresser or barber. While it can be disappointing to invest time and energy into someone who quits before qualifying, it means only the best and most dedicated hairdressers and barbers graduate and continue working at V For Hair and Beauty/Vj Barbers Merivale.”

The award winning team at Polished Diamonds not only has more than $120 million of GIA certified diamonds and extraordinary gemstones like sapphire, tanzanite and emerald available, but also offers the most accurate jewellery design service.

GO FISH He’s one of the most recognisable faces of the New Zealand culinary scene, with a passion for fishing and seafood which saw him partner with seafood delivery service Freshcatch earlier this year.

Al Brown says baking fish is a simple and healthy method of cooking, with the addition of a crumb bringing more flavour and a delightful crunchy texture to contrast the delicate fish in his Freshcatch Herb Crumb recipe.

FRESHCATCH HERB CRUMB

SERVES

4

INGREDIENTS:

METHOD:

½ baguette (crust cut off ) 1 cup panko ½ chilli (seeds removed, finely diced) 1 lemon (zest and juice) ¼ cup chives ¼ cup chervil ¼ cup mint ¼ cup basil ½ cup parsley 100gm butter (melted) Flaky sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper 6 portions 150gm skinless porae (or similar, medium/large flaked fish)

Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Tear the baguette up into small, rough pieces and place in a mixing bowl. Add the panko, chilli, lemon zest and juice, chopped herbs, and melted butter. Mix the ingredients together until all the bread is buttery and moist. Season well with salt and pepper. Lay out your portions of fish and season with salt and pepper. Carefully pack your herb crumb onto the top of the fish, trying to cover as much as you can. Transfer fish onto a greased oven tray, then bake for 10 to 15 minutes until the crumb has turned golden and crispy, and the fish feels firm when you squeeze the sides. Serve with a squeeze of lemon.

LIT TLE DINER

You’ll probably find Akaroa’s ‘Little Bistro’ owner, Richard Uttley, in the kitchen of one of the town’s gorgeous old buildings decked out in French bunting, or floating, courtesy of a kayak on the harbour. We asked him… How long have you owned The Little Bistro? Just two and a half years. Before that, I was at Bloody Mary’s in Latimer Square. But I absolutely love Akaroa, even in winter – particularly in winter, actually. What are your restaurant’s top success stories? A couple of dishes spring to mind. They’re our braised beef short-rib and our Canterbury littleneck clams with saffron cream. Both have very recently featured in recipe book My Mother’s Kitchen, by Potton & Burton. We use local saffron from Saffron Gold in Ashburton. It’s magic. Why do your customers love to return? We have a great fresh food supply, so what is eaten tonight has been picked this morning. The local post lady, Silkie, is diversifying by cultivating and tending 10 acres of veges and herbs for us. That means all of our produce is local to Banks Peninsula. What’s your favourite café or restaurant meal in Christchurch? As of yesterday, my favourite place is Universo Brasserie and Bar. I ordered the most incredible confit of chicken gnocchi with fried egg and burnt onion purée. I’ll be going back there to try their other dishes, even though in the interests of wide experience, I don’t often go to the same place twice. What’s your favourite dessert? I’m not as big on desserts as other things, but I had a fabulous green tea tiramisu at Kimji in Christchurch. What makes a great dining-out experience? The whole thing, including lighting, service, décor, a good wine list, an informal and relaxing vibe… a place where I don’t have to think about the business of hospitality. What do people sometimes get wrong when they’re cooking? Trying to over-complicate dishes. I like to keep things relatively simple, incredibly fresh and, of course, locally sourced. What are your favourite things about Akaroa? Swimming with the dolphins and the Giant’s House, but also NightSUP paddle-boarding, which is a lit-up experience.

DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON

This month TMR showcases a favourite festive tipple: Death in the Afternoon. A drink designed by renowned beverage enthusiast Ernest Hemmingway, the original recipe calls for 1-part Absinthe to 4-parts Champagne, and then instructions to drink 4-6 in quick succession. The TMR team strongly encourages the responsible consumption of alcohol, so in the interests of the abstemious they suggest moderation in the consumption of this truly great, yet inspiring cocktail.

TASTE AND

FALL IN LOVE

Hiding in plain sight in the central city for 10 years plus, Japanz Bakery is now in the South City Centre. Offering coffee, Japanese specialities, plus local favourites infused with Japanese flavours, this bakery has taste sensations and new food experiences to tempt the most jaded Kiwi palates.

M

akiko Lyoda says the food is all created on the premises by her husband Takuya and two chefs. Proud of every product they sell Makiko says, “just taste one item and you will fall in love”. You could spark up Christmas this year with a Japanz Christmas cake. Each cake is decorated with Santa and Mrs Clause, and Makiko offers three different flavours: fruit, green tea, and chocolate. Fruit is the most popular flavour with layers of sponge, interspersed with layers of fruit and custard cream, with fresh cream on the outside. However, the green tea is not to be missed, with decadent

sponge interlaced with fragrant green tea and red bean paste, which Makiko says is like a jam. The chocolate flavour features ganache with sponge and Makiko says, “it is not overly sweet and appeals to most people”. Makiko recommends pre-ordering for Christmas. The cakes are for sale by the slice in the cabinet for you to try before you choose. Japanz offers Christmas cookie gift packs with prices that range from $11.70 to $77.00. The gift boxes come with ribbon and decoration and in five sizes. If you order by December 10 and collect by December 22, you will receive a $10 gift voucher with every $50 spent. Meri Kurisumasu!

You may not have taken your social media usage to the level of posting your last meal, but you’d be one of the few not to.

W

hether it’s clever flat lays on your kitchen table, or a divine meal at the hottest spot, it seems hunger for culinary novelty is impossible to satisfy. With an estimated 40 per cent of millennials going viral with their fave foods, restaurants just can’t ignore the need for Insta-ready dishes anymore.

WALNUT CARAMEL TART

Delicious desserts are a mainstay of the menu at The Villas. Try this variation of one of their delicious sweet treats. Ingredients 175g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 85g butter, cubed 50g caster sugar 1 egg yolk For the filling 200g caster sugar 100g butter, cubed 200ml whipping or double cream 200g shelled walnut halves

Heat fan oven to 190C. Process flour, butter and sugar until it forms fine breadcrumbs. Add egg yolk and 1-2 tbsp cold water, and pulse to make a firm dough. Knead the pastry on a lightly floured surface, then roll out to a round about 5cm larger than your tin. Lift onto the tin, then press into the corners using your finger. Do not trim the pastry. Fill the pastry case with a round of baking paper and baking beans. Chill for 10 mins. Blindbake for 10 mins, remove the paper and beans, then bake for 5 mins more. Filling: Put the sugar in a

large pan with 3 tbsp cold water. Gently heat to dissolve the sugar, increase heat and bubble until the syrup turns a rich caramel colour. Remove from heat and stir in butter, then stir in cream. Return to heat and boil hard, stirring until sauce has thickened enough to leave a gap on the base of the pan when you draw your spoon across it. Stir in walnuts. Fill the pastry case with nut mixture. Return to the oven for 8-10 mins until the filling is bubbling. Cool for 10 mins before removing carefully from the tin. Serve warm or cold.

Try something new.

SPEARS OF

SPRINGTIME

Spears of juicy asparagus in springtime – there’s nothing like it. And if it’s the local freshly picked quality stuff, even better.

Christopher and Jenny Gray bought their 23-Hectare Motukarara farm in 2003. It took four years to establish eight hectares of the sandy, silt loam with the best-tasting asparagus. It is available direct from the farm, 10 minutes from Tai Tapu, and at Ohoka market on Fridays, or Row J at Riccarton Racecourse on Sundays. Saturdays Jenny goes to Lincoln Farmers’ and Craft Market while Christopher mans the Lyttelton Market stall outside Roots Restaurant. The chef buys up the healthy seasonal superfood, as do other eateries such as 27 Steps and Otahuna Lodge. Christopher separates spears into bunches of fine, medium and thick. “It cooks evenly that way, and lasts up to eight days stored upright in a jug of water.” The couple also grows strawberries and sells free-range eggs, as well as the neighbour’s hazelnuts, walnuts and homemade goat-milk soap. There are onions, tomatoes, potatoes, and the sweetest, juiciest organic oranges from Gisborne. The hard-workers are also beekeepers, selling clover honey, alongside high-pollen-count Manuka honey from a fellow beekeeper in Kaikoura. Asparagus season only lasts until the end of December, so the advice is to indulge now. Christopher likes his asparagus with salt, pepper, a poached egg, and a simple twist – a squeeze of lemon. “Just try it.” Visit Grays Produce farm shop, Akoroa Road (SH75), Motukarara, Christchurch – just 1km past the Blue Duck Café. Open 7 days a week from 8am- 8pm. Phone 03-329 7905.

A HIDDEN GEM When you travel to Auckland or Wellington, you might have your must-see places to visit. Patisserie Yahagi is one of those places for those coming to Christchurch who love stunning desserts and cakes.

lthough the shop is inside the tiny arcade at Church Corner Mall in Upper Riccarton, Patisserie Yahagi has many customers from other places like Auckland, despite the lack of advertising. “There are some new dessert bars in Auckland which are featured frequently but I prefer Patisserie Yahagi because the taste is definitely a lot better than them,” an Auckland customer says. “It was very much worth a visit from Auckland.” Patisserie Yahagi often faces risktakers on a mission to bring its delicate desserts and cakes back to Auckland. When they ask if this is possible by plane, Eri Yahagi, the Owner-Patissier, can only say, “I can’t recommend it but

the best you can do is to handle the cakes carefully and keep them in a cool bag”. And, “Good Luck”. There are many kinds of gorgeous and mouth-watering desserts in Patisserie Yahagi. The Patisserie Yahagi bestseller is the ‘Chocolate Mousse’, an award-winner made from Belgian chocolate which has been sold ever since Patisserie Yahagi opened in 2009. There are no days when it isn’t sold out. Patisserie Yahagi has more than 15 other desserts and cakes in the cabinet every day – a unique combination to the types of desserts seen in other bakeries and cafés. Step into the unknown arcade to try jewel-like desserts and realise how lucky you are to live so much closer to Patisserie Yahagi than your fellow Aucklanders! Phone 341 7421.

ative birdsong from the tui and bellbird accompany a revitalising forest walk. It’s always enchanting to be closely followed by a fantail or to see the majestic wingspan of our indigenous falcon. Cheeky kea, our current Bird of the Year, are also resident in the alpine heights. On the odd occasion, they make an appearance about town, hanging out with the locals. The local duck population is also part of village life. The family dog doesn’t have to miss out. They are welcome, on a leash, on forest walks – and can even sniff and explore off-leash with their owners in the heritage forest and Lower Dog Stream areas. The Visitors Information Centre has details of at least four dog-friendly motels in Hanmer, that accept the family pet (conditions apply). And there are privately owned holiday homes that also welcome fur children. The rivers offer trout and salmon fishing throughout the Hurunui district, for those that prefer their wildlife on the end of their line. Hanmer Horse Trekking can take the whole family on a journey through spectacular scenery. Or at Hanmer Springs Animal Park, children can have a ride on Ali the pony. Here they can also handfeed fallow deer and wallabies in their enclosures, and wander freely amid the two acres of farm and exotic creatures great and small – from llamas and water buffalo to geese and chinchillas. Wild, and tame, experiences abound in the alpine adventure land of Hanmer.

B SHELF-STYLING By Melinda Collins

Traditionally, the humble bookshelf has been simply a furniture item; an after-thought of the design process. But increasingly, bookshelves and their design siblings, wall-units, are being incorporated at design stage, with our homes reaping the architectural benefits of this popular pairing.

ut the best bookshelves aren’t just exclusive members of the practicality party, with personality adding the punch to this savvy space-saving storage. And, because builtin shelving can be designed to cater to your household’s specific needs, the options are virtually endless. So, what about when it comes to styling your shelving? Well, that’s where you get to have all the fun: • There’s not actually a rule book that states books must be stacked vertically, or even that they have to fill the entire shelf. Stack some flat, sit some vertical, go on, mix it up • Add décor to your shelving, particularly some conversation starters • Add extra hidden storage by filling some shelf space with cool drawers or storage boxes • Use contact paper or wallpaper to brighten up the back panels of random shelves • Play with lighting options, such as coloured backlighting to make your shelving shine • Don’t ever forget, Instagram and Pinterest are your friends, the kind that have all the best advice!

MARRIAGE OF

QUALITY&STYLE

The cognoscenti understand that quality with ostentation can be an uneasy coupling, while a marriage of quality and style ensures enduring harmony.

L

ogan Townsend, Director of Homes by Maxim and Philip Bidwell Architecture, is in search of clients who understand that quality involves a quiet discernment of design, materials and spaces that breathe elegance, rather than shout pretention. Offering a design and build service that runs the gamut from $400k to $6 million, Homes by Maxim is unique with its price range. There are two excellent showhomes: one in Lincoln and the other in Silverstream, with an office in Wanaka for Central Otago clients. Logan says their raison d’être is to deliver architectural excellence and construction, whatever the budget. Design Lead, Design Manager and original owner of Philip Bidwell Architecture Phil Bidwell, says he wanted to stay connected with a company that is delivering excellence. for the site and budget, blending family life and largescale entertaining with its two kitchens, three living, and four bathrooms. Parents have their own large apartment-style space on the upper level, while outside a pool house, and riverside landings step down from a walkway to enable family to feed the passing ducks. A gentle zephyr from India ruffles this part of the Wairarapa Stream, adding identity and distinguishing the house from the more vernacular minimalism. An air of opulence brings further presence. Landscape design is by Kamo Marsh, the interior joinery including kitchens, bathroom and laundry are by national award winner Davinia Sutton, and interior design is by Angelique Armstrong, also a national award winner, while Lume Lighting is providing the lighting design. The awards are recognised by leading Designers and Architects in the industry, as the benchmark in global design. Ben says Trenzseater is privileged and humbled to receive this international recognition. “This accolade reinforces our unparalleled enthusiasm and passion for interior design, and demonstrates our commitment to supplying the very best international interior design service available.” At the awards dinner in London’s venerable Dorchester Hotel, Trenzseater came a very close second, having led the category for

many weeks amongst “some of the most talented designers and architects on the planet”. Ben would like to thank the clients for allowing their project to be entered – and adds he thoroughly enjoys working with them. The project will feature in leading interior design magazine design et al, and in the award’s published hard cover book. Ben’s infectious passion for interior design has grown Trenzseater’s significant Interior Design Division. He says he is honoured by the opportunities to design for some of the finest residential properties in New Zealand. Projects throughout the country in his distinct style have received further international recognition as finalists in the Andrew Martin Interior Design Award for the last two years, plus three Honourable Mentions in the International Design Awards (IDA).

Full On, Flat Out and Always... P assionate

Here are a few excerpts from a recent interview where I got to share some of the thoughts and ingredients that make up my year.

1.

It’s been a really busy year for you Lynette, what are the highlights professionally and would you share a personal highlight as well?

2017 has been an incredible year and, to be fair, that’s consistent with every year that I can remember! I think professionally the biggest highlight for me was having our company nominated as a finalist in the Champion Canterbury Business Awards. I actually cried when they called to say we had been selected. The competition is fierce, the other applicant is notable and, because it’s open to all industries, I felt really honored that a real estate company, our company, had made it into such an esteemed group. It’s like acknowledgement of all the innovation, hard work and risks that we have taken to push performance and service standards in an often-maligned industry. Personally, our youngest son is just about to complete his 13th year at high school, which is a transition for us, and our eldest son, a ski instructor, is also on the New Zealand Ski Demo Team. A great thrill for him and a hoot for me, a non-skier!

2. After over 20 years, in fact 24 years, in the business; how would you describe the current market and are there any significant trends that you are noticing? Well, no market is ever static. Markets are dynamic; they change, deviate and metamorphose, favouring different participants at different times. Some markets favour owners/sellers, and over the last three years we have seen an extraordinary market, buoyed by insurance funds, high demand for property, fast transactions and a steady sense of confidence. Currently it’s still a good market, but I label it (and I actually hate labels!) as a normal market with a bias towards purchasers after a long period of the opposite. Our investment market has taken an intake of breath due to much higher deposit requirements and the ‘as is, uninsured’ market is still a moving target, dependent on the price and quality of the property being offered.

Trends?

Well, there are a couple which in some ways are continuations of long-held traditions:

a) Mums and Dads are deeply involved in many cases, helping to finance first-home buyers; b) Auctions are mainstream

FOLLOW US ON... 66 November 09, 2017 Metropol

3. What recommendations do you offer to homeowners wanting to sell? Simple. Do your homework as to how to capitalize on your property’s value. This includes presentation for maximum appeal and deciding who you should use to sell your home. Be optimistic, realistic and remain informed throughout the process.

4. Do you ever get tired of the industry? Even if I did, I wouldn’t say! The industry has been very kind to me and I have an addictive personality, so I love the challenge of being at the coalface of our business and the forefront of our industry.

5. What do you think has contributed to your company’s success and personal success? Hard work, great marketing, hard work, professional and personal integrity, and hard work!

6. Share one simple wisdom with our readers? Be kind! Easier said than done at times!

Indeed, there is a sustainability of approach at Loft which sees Nicky and Craig always looking to the past, present and future. The past is manifested in the integrity and friendly approach central to every interaction. “We stand behind every product, so don’t be hung up on the fine print of warranties. You’ll also experience good old fashioned ‘see it, like it, buy it’ at Loft, where there is no waiting three months for your new treasure to be shipped. Recently the City Mission was the recipient of a table from Loft for the new Women’s Night Shelter, while Cholmondeley Children’s Centre received a huge pile of cushions for their home. The future is on their minds too. “We are planet conscious and we make sure to deal with suppliers that are good to their staff.” Eco-friendly Christmas giving is sorted at Loft with a range of wooden games such as Giant Jenga and croquet sets, as well as hammocks and outdoor furniture. “We sought independence and growth with our name change,” Nicky says. “But you will still experience the same great service and quality.” See Loft on their new Facebook page.

Prints are the perfect medium to express yourself.

ARTI SHAH ARTISTUDIO

PRINTED PERFECTION By Allison O’Neill

When it comes to art, our eyes and hearts seem to know in a split second what we love. The only explanation being that art speaks very personally to us. Like a great song, it touches something within us that expresses ourselves to ourselves – who we are in that exact moment of our life.

Prints are so affordable and there is something for every taste, personality and art language. Scandi style art is simple yet striking, vintage poster art of days gone by is full of colour, some children’s prints are fiction land-y while other simple animals are beautiful, soft and so cute. Urban art (a’la Banksy) and pop art (a’la Andy Warhol’s colourful Marilyn Monroe) remain popular, as does typographic art: inspirational words and phrases put up in homes to remind busy folk what is important in life. Modern New Zealand art and photography prints are clean and speak to us of home, while museum style prints yield to those more traditional in desire. “Hey! That is Van Gogh,” my six-year-old son says out of the blue as he walks past mum busy writing; art must be ageless. I’m sure when my generation were that age, we were probably still eating crayons, yet today’s kids know their Van Goghs. No word on what the Van Gogh said to my son. You should love what is within your home. If you scan around and see naught but things given, not chosen, then grant yourself a refresh. If something no longer inspires bliss within you, then its season in your life is done. You can spot your growth in the things you have around you. Art can be outgrown, though hopefully not as quickly as the attraction of desperately needing it in the first place, and yet given how affordable prints are, they are the perfect medium to express yourself.

T

his is most evident when in a store with a friend, who charges off at pace to take in a piece she spots on the wall. She delights in said piece, lost in whatever it is saying to her, while you could take or leave it. What art communicates can challenge you, ask a question of you, offer some sort of comfort or stop you in your tracks and make you really feel something. I have just brought some contemporary abstract prints for my home by a fabulous Budapest based graphic designer Dániel Taylor. According to those in the know, Taylor has ‘an obsession for exploration and variation, skilfully merging disparate subjects together to create powerful abstract compositions’. Since their arrival, everyone through the door has commented on them. The soft colours in the hummingbird seem to relax and inspire while, in my writing nook, a woman made from streams of swirly, smokey threads mystifies. She symbolises what writing is to me – words within me, coming from somewhere and gently filing out into the world. If this all sounds too gushy, I apologise – the art made me do it.

T THE

SIMPLE LIFE By Kineta Booker

Which sentence can you relate to? You’ve just arrived home from a long day at work, you glide down the hallway, put your bag away neatly, pour yourself a drink, and consider dinner options; or, you’ve just arrived home from a long day at work, you bump into the buffet table in the hall you forgot you bought, sending everything on top flying, feel anxious as you walk into the living area because there’s three clothes racks, full of clothes, still drying after a week, you step on a piece of Lego, there’s potting mix everywhere because the dog has been into the potplant, and you can’t find your way to the kitchen because there’s too many obstacles.

he first one? Carry on with your day, you’re perfect. The latter? You need less stuff. So many of us are obsessed with things. Maybe we’re making up for the fact we didn’t have much growing up. Or perhaps we just love the buzz of buying something new. You can have beautiful things, but you don’t need a lot of it. Clutter causes anxiety, it attracts dust which can lead to respiratory issues, and, let’s be honest – clutter isn’t pretty. If ‘stuff ’ is taking over your life, it’s time to take charge.

There are varying degrees of hoarding: • You still have that small pile of magazines you bought when organising your wedding. You’re fine. • All wardrobes are jam-packed with stuff you might need one day. Trust me, you’re most probably not going to need them. Make an action plan. • You need a torch on your person at all times, in case there’s a power cut; you won’t make it out of your cluttered house in one piece. Take action NOW. • You sleep where you can at night because your stuff now takes over your bed, couch and anywhere with any kind of surface. Call in the professionals, that Hoarders programme on tele, anyone! Stat!

Finding the time to declutter can often be tricky, so here’s a timefriendly action plan to help you live a healthier, clutter-free home: • Make a decision on what you’d like to keep in your home, then make a plan on how to free yourself from everything else. Remember, stuff holds us back. • 365 Items in 365 Days. This is the best place to start. Every day, find one thing in your home to give away, sell, put in a charity bin, recycle, or throw away. • Start small: each week choose one drawer, half a cupboard, or a toybox, to tackle. What do you need? When was the last time you used it? Does it still work? Does it fit? • The garage is where most things end up. If it’s in there, chances are you’ll never use it again. Time to part ways.

There are so many reasons and excuses to keep stuff, but all it really comes down to what is important to you: an overwhelming or an organised life. Metropol November 09, 2017 71

CRAFTWORKS

Just a peep into Rickety Rosies in Merivale is enough to charm the Christmas stockings off anyone.

L

ike Santa’s grotto, its wall to wall enchanted handmade creations from two very gifted ladies, Cathi Lough and Sally Duncan. Their craftwork is unique and authentic; many pieces adorned with timeless folk-art detailing. Beginning in the ’80s as a seasonal store, it is now a year-round venture – but for now it’s everything festive. Cathi was sewing in front of the TV when her ears pricked up at the name ‘Rickety Rosie’, during a documentary about a rather colourful West Coast lady of the night! The company name has stuck for over a decade, and the business even exports to Japan. Once housed in her Merivale homestead at 115 Rugby Street, Rickety Rosies is still in exactly the same spot, but in a newly built home of romantic grandeur – befitting an artist’s lair. Opening hours are Monday-Saturdays 10am-4pm. Follow on Facebook or phone 03-355 8232.

At Terra Viva, everything is displayed by colour and style, so finding a theme that suits you is easy; Silver Glitz, Mmm, Minty Goodness, Vintage, Not Just Christmas, Children, Scandi Cool, Traditional. And there’s a big emphasis on light once again, thanks to the modern technology of tiny seed lights – white lit trees and cones, houses for tea lights, and strings of lit balls. t’s the same as the rest of life: discipline helps no end. We all hear stories of people whose hired professional didn’t contact them at the appointed time, or failed to show up. So... doesn’t the same apply in reverse? It actually does, if you value your time. Good communication is probably the number one. This issue is fraught if people have differing expectations. So: • Keep appointment times and places simple. Be there with paper, pens, tablets and other measuring technologies. Give the designer your card. Message contractors in the way they like to contact you. Don’t leave phone messages

if they prefer texts, for instance. • Know what you want, or at least what you like. Put time and research into this, early. • Avoid over-communicating. Don’t add unnecessary detail to instructions. Write things down. Drawings or photographs which explain what you mean are helpful. • Keep all of your swatches of fabrics, mirror or tile samples etc in your bag, briefcase or car. Previous aesthetic decisions will make the next ones! • Finally, agree on time-frames and dates for defined progress points of your project.

CAPTURING PERSONALITIES Building and constructing the ideal home is about capturing the client’s personality, says Trevor Daniell, of Chch Home Builders. “It’s about being meticulous and taking the time to understand their needs, ensuring their peace of mind throughout the entire process.”

C

ombining the latest technology and contemporary design with old-school values and quality craftmanship, the company has been providing superior quality homes to the Canterbury region for more than five years. Specialising in mid to upper range new homes, one of Chch Home Builders’ latest projects is a rebuild on Rowan Avenue; a three-bedroom 120sqm home on TC3 land. Another recently finished project on TC3 land is an 80sqm home and 146sqm home on one site, on Sheldon Street. The team are experts in managing the entire design and build process, working with a trusted group of highly skilled contractors. Demonstrating an expert ability to find a solution to any challenging situation, Chch Homes Builders has just completed a four-car garage in Cashmere, built into the hillside. With limited site space and the need to dig extensively, the project is a staged build requiring detailed planning. Trevor lives and breathes the construction industry. He comes from a family of builders and brings three decades of building experience to the company. “Because we are a small dedicated team and only focus on a few projects at a time, we are able to offer a more personal service to our clients and attain the highest standards and quality workmanship.” Phone Trevor on 021 220 7716 or email trevor@chchhomebuilders.co.nz.

FOREWORD

I

n the 1960s, psychologist Frank X. Barron conducted a series of experiments on some of his generation’s most renowned thinkers in an attempt to isolate the unique spark of creative genius. Barron found that, contrary to conventional thought at the time, intelligence had only a modest role in creative thinking – IQ alone could not explain the creative spark. In fact, the study showed that creativity is informed by a whole host of intellectual, emotional, motivational and moral characteristics. Across the creative sector, the most common traits were a preference for complexity and ambiguity, an unusually high tolerance for disorder and disarray, the ability to extract order from chaos, independence, unconventionality and a willingness to take risks. In short, he described the creative geniuses amongst us as “more primitive and more cultured, more destructive and more constructive, occasionally crazier and yet adamantly saner, than the average person”. It is certainly true of the local context, where Antony Gough stands out as much for his bright and flamboyant dress sense as he does for his innovative and forward-thinking ideas. The summer opening of The Terrace represents a seminal moment in the rebuild, one which the city has come to as a direct result of Antony’s sheer faith and dedication. It may be his colourful suits and sunny optimism that first catches your eye, but it’s his passion and commitment to the city which sees him recognised as the public face of the central city rebuild.

ecently I have been promoting an idea for the rebuild of Christ Church Cathedral which has created a lot of interest. Now that we have agreement on the restoration of the cathedral, nobly supported by the church, the government, City Council and generous private benefactors, we will begin to embark on a seven to ten year restoration programme.

Why not celebrate the restoration of the cathedral and turn it into a tourist attraction? I think we should turn the restoration of the cathedral into a tourist attraction, rather than hiding it behind high fences and under shrouds of plastic as it goes through the restoration process. Why not celebrate the restoration of the cathedral and turn it into a tourist attraction? A transparent fence could be erected around the construction site. A couple of temporary grandstands could be placed at appropriate locations just outside that fence so that visitors to the square could sit and watch progress on the cathedral. Having the cathedral restored in full view to the residents of Christchurch and visitors to our city would, in its own right, become a significant attraction, drawing people into the square to watch the restoration in real time. This would give our city a real sense of ownership of the restoration process and create another attraction in the square. Given the timeframes involved in the restoration process, concealing the rebuild of the cathedral is unconscionable.

S

tuart Nash is our new Minister of Revenue. It is one of the most technically challenging portfolios for any Minister. As we have already seen during the general election, it can also be one of the most politically troublesome. So, what key tax policy proposals can we expect to see? Firstly, the new Government will stop the tax cuts that were due to come into effect on April 1, 2018. It can’t afford them, given the social spending pledges that have been made. A committee of experts will be established to consider our tax system and a capital gains tax (‘CGT’) in particular. During the election campaign, Labour was forced to defer the possible timing of introduction of a CGT until after the next general election. This issue is arguably less about tax dollars and more about the perception of the fairness of our tax system as a whole, as experts generally consider that a CGT may not be a reliable or major contributor to our tax revenues. A water tax is now off the new Government’s agenda. The public fully understands the need to fix our polluted rivers and lakes, but there were some serious concerns whether a water tax would be a fair way to fund the pollution problem. However, a royalty on water bottlers exporting our water is a different matter entirely. History has shown many times that there is considerable political risk if people believe a tax system is unfair. Let’s see if Mr Nash takes heed of that.

T

he phrase ‘workplace culture’ is often bandied about, but what does it really mean? An organisation’s culture is its character and personality; it’s the sum total of all of its parts – values, traditions, behaviours, attitudes. Most importantly, it’s what happens when a leader steps out of the office. How does the team continue to interact with each other and your customers when your back is turned? Workplace culture is important because it either strengthens or undermines your business objectives and what you are trying to achieve. Your culture matters because it: • Drives engagement and motivates employees to give discretionary effort • Attracts the best talent into your brand. You want to hire the best people in the market, it helps to be able to clearly communicate your culture and how you choose to interact with each other • Affects your financial performance – organisations with strong cultures outperform their competitors • Retains the best talent in highly competitive markets. Successful companies keep their culture front of mind and work on it frequently and consistently. To understand more about your current workplace culture, you can observe how your team is interacting in the office, meetings, discussions, and talk with your team about the workplace in your regular 1:1 meeting, yearly engagement surveys and around the board table. The bottom line is, people won’t remember what you say, but how you make them feel. This is what you’ll be remembered by; it’s what culture is. Living this on a day-today basis is the key to success.

WHO HITS THE MARK? Who is the only Canterbury based publication to have 45,000 copies printed and delivered fortnightly to high income homes, stands and business PO Boxes right across the region?

F

riends from Auckland noticed the vibe and energy following a stroll down a lane through the restored Mckenzie & Willis façade, and coffee at Little High, which has been a huge success. The Crossing opened recently with offerings like H&M and an upmarket supermarket; its carpark, along with the Lichfield and Hereford Street carparks will greatly assist demand. We have recently seen the opening of the Triangle Centre, the BNZ Centre, Vodafone, Kathmandu, and Dux Central, with the Terraces to open soon. Heritage buildings have always been an important element of our community but with the loss of so many, even more so. It’s great to see the restored Shands building sitting next to the Trinity Church. The Duncans buildings in lower High are being propped for restoration that will add to the draw of the Innovation Precinct. Close by is New Regent Street; another unique heritage experience and a fabulous CBD offering. With the change in Government it is important we engage with the Crown to re-affirm remaining anchor projects will still be completed. With Fletchers’ reported $160 million loss, one would wonder if the East Frame, designed to offer high-density residential, should be re-offered to the market. The speedy completion of roading under - Otakaro’s control is also paramount to the recovery and the survival of affected businesses. Council needs to listen to the majority of citizens who want a truly accessible city, not one with traffic lanes so narrow they are unsafe to drive down. We have come a long way and I have no doubt we will achieve a city that is vibrant, interesting and we can all be proud of.

I

t was a great honour and privilege to be recently sworn in as a Minister of the Crown. The roles I have taken on come with significant responsibilities and, as Jacinda Ardern said the day she became Prime Minister, “we have a responsibility now, to all New Zealanders, to do our very best to achieve the goals of this government; to be a government that is active, that is focussed, that is empathetic, and that is strong”. These words convey, not just a sense that this government will be doing things differently, but that we will be doing them with a focus firmly on people and how our decisions affect their lives. Nowhere is the application of this approach more important than in Canterbury. We campaigned hard in Canterbury on the need for a Labour Government to provide the certainty people are telling us they need. One of my key priorities as the in-coming Minister will be ensuring we have strong relationships across the city and with Wellington. Addressing mental health issues is also something I care passionately about and why I’m committed to rebuilding the relationship with the CDHB. Likewise, I am dedicated to a strong and enduring partnership with the councils. Underpinning all my thinking is the need to transition our future back to where it belongs; in Canterbury and away from Wellington. There is much to celebrate in our city. All around us we can see new and wonderful things happening. With this in mind, I take my new responsibilities seriously and I’m determined to work with all Cantabrians to help build a vibrant future for our city and our region.

H

again. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be living and working here and the opportunities are vast. I’m currently living on the edge of the red zone where the daily routine of walking the dog is far from a chore. The beauty of having such a vast open space bordered by the Avon River is really quite special.

It’s an incredibly exciting time to be living and working here and the opportunities are vast. It’s fantastic to see the city looking to make this area a permanent attraction that will create a legacy of recreation and nature coming together for the benefit of generations to come. Working in the inner city still takes my breath away. The stunning architecture respectfully blending the old with the new, honouring our memories with future hope, shows real consideration by those redeveloping the heart of our city. Each day progress is made, you can feel the inner city gaining an energy and vibe that can only come from being rebuilt. I’m loving being home again and am looking forward to working with Canterbury businesses to help our local economy and community thrive and grow.

CANTERBURY QUAKE’S

GLOBAL IMPACT The series of Canterbury quakes were unprecedented both in size and in scale, with their impact extending to a global context, as other countries utilise lessons learnt at a local level.

T

he University of Canterbury Student Volunteer Army’s proactive response to the 2010 and 2011 quakes led to the creation of CHCH101: Rebuilding Christchurch; an academic course now available at the university where students study citizenship, post-disaster response and volunteering. While the course’s focus is on the post-quake Christchurch context, according to Associate Professor and Director of the UC Community Engagement Hub Dr Billy Osteen, its impact has rippled around the world. “In the days following the 2011 Canterbury earthquake, we were in touch with Tulane University in New Orleans which had created a way for its students to be part of the postKatrina rebuild efforts,” he says. “It is now exciting to build upon that and serve as a resource for others in post-disaster settings. Reaching out to other universities is especially satisfying as we are paying forward the help we received from colleagues around the world when we were designing CHCH101 and progressing community engagement across the UC campus.”

WE ARE PAYING FORWARD THE HELP WE RECEIVED FROM COLLEAGUES AROUND THE WORLD.” Hurricane Irene – 2011 In August 2011, the upper east coast of the US was struck by Hurricane Irene, causing significant damage, power outages and flooding. The area around the University of Vermont was hit hard and students immediately went out to help with the clean-up. Associate Professor Billy Osteen and American UC alumnus Dr Lane Perry – whose doctoral thesis was on servicelearning and student engagement – contacted a colleague there who took the CHCH101 outline, adapted it and offered the course two weeks later when the next semester started.

Illinois Tornado – 2013 In February 2013, US study abroad student Jessica Weston came to UC from the University of Illinois-Champaign and took CHCH101. For her final project, she proposed to set up a Student Volunteer Army group at her US university. Several months later, in November 2013, much of Jessica’s hometown of Washington, Illinois, was destroyed by a category F5 tornado. An hour away in Champaign, Jessica went into action and started a ‘fill the truck’ campaign, where needed items are donated with the goal of filling up a tractor trailer. She was so successful that she filled up two trucks.

Hurricane Harvey – 2017 Soon after Hurricane Harvey passed through the Houston area earlier this year, UC was in touch with colleagues at Rice University to share the CHCH101 course model and accompanying resources. It was a timely connection as they were in the process of considering an academic response for the 2000 students who were out providing immediate relief. Rice University found the information and experiences particularly helpful and UC is now collaborating with them as they get further along in the process.

A TRANSFORMATIONAL TIME Ever since the earthquakes which changed the face of our city forever, people have been asking the same question, ‘what is going to happen with the Red Zone?’ Well, according to Regenerate Christchurch, quite a bit.

R

egenerate Christchurch, the organisation working closely with local business, iwi and community services to see Christchurch move from recovery to regeneration, is focused on ensuring the future of the Red Zone is one which we can be proud of. Regenerate Christchurch Chief Executive Ivan Lafeta took the time to speak to Canterbury Build about what could be in store for the Avon River Red Zone.

By Ben Selby

These are: - Visitor attractions - Economic activity - Ecological restoration

What are some of the main ideas being pushed regarding the future of the Red Zone? We’re open to, and are considering, all options and ideas for the Ōtākaro Avon River. We have distilled over 5,000 ideas, suggestions and proposals into 12 different land uses and how they can potentially be used in the Regeneration Area.

- Water quality improvement - Community places and spaces - Transport - Recreation - Whitewater sports hub - Flood mitigation - Productive land use - Residential

canterbury build THE REGENERATION AREA HAS THE ABILITY TO BE TRANSFORMATIONAL FOR CHRISTCHURCH. How will local residents benefit from these ideas? We believe the regeneration area has the ability to be transformational for both Christchurch and New Zealand, and become a place where people can experience the beauty of the river and the many opportunities this large area could provide, including recreation, visitor attractions, employment and the natural environment. Both locals and visitors will be able to enjoy the area, and this will, in turn, provide economic opportunities for the region. This area is also an opportunity to try new ways of using the land that will demonstrate to the world how a city can adapt to the growing challenges presented by climate change and sea level rise.

We’ve also completed a technical feasibility study and an indicative business case on a flatwater facility. All of the 10 combinations of these 12 land uses that we’ve published feature a ‘open space corridor’ of up to 150m on each side of the Ōtākaro Avon River as a common element. This condition of the land immediately next to the river, together with the natural hazards affecting the area, mean an open space corridor along the length of the river is likely. The width of this corridor has yet to be confirmed and will vary.

When will a decision be made and who will be involved in the decisionmaking process? Feedback on the 10 combinations of land uses closed on November 6, so now we will refine the shortlist. Early next year we plan to hold a major public exhibition of the shortlisted options. People will have the opportunity to provide feedback on this refined shortlist, and this feedback will help inform Regenerate Christchurch’s decision-making. Following the exhibition, Regenerate Christchurch will prepare a draft Regeneration Plan.

A SPECIAL CITY SITE

Work has begun to transform the former Canterbury Television (CTV) building site into a memorial, with landscaping work now under way.

“T

he site will become a special part of the city – a peaceful place to sit and reflect, with grass and gardens,” Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive Albert Brantley says. “The lawn and the three former car parks on the Cashel Street side will be retained. There will be a central grove of cherry trees as well as New Zealand native plants and international plants to provide variety and colour. A stone plinth will include a

water feature that pours into the garden bed.” The collapse of the CTV building on the corner of Cashel and Madras Streets resulted in the loss of 115 lives and the injury of many more people in the February 2011 earthquakes. Feedback was sought from families who lost loved ones in the building and Brantley says the feedback played an important role in the design.

Words of remembrance will be incorporated into a vertical structure where mementoes and flowers can be placed or attached. A sign at the entranceway will provide visitors with information about what happened at the site. Brantley says as much of the original foundation as possible will be retained. The western side will be covered in stone chip. Planter boxes will be placed on the eastern side entrance where the concrete is exposed. Work on the site is expected to be completed by 21 February 2018.

GOOD HOME THE FOUNDATION OF A

The structural integrity of a home requires a foundation built to last.

hether you have purchased an ‘as is where is’ home or require remedial work on an earthquake-damaged building, the team at Precision Solutions specialises in house re-levelling, foundation and pile repair. Those putting their home on the market or who have concerns about their home’s foundation could benefit from a free assessment, Contracts Manager Charles Porter says. Some of the signs to look out for in your own home include cracking in external foundation walls and a ‘hogging’ or sagging floor. “Many people don’t realise their home has issues until they prepare to sell and get a builder’s report – so it pays to get it professionally checked.” An assessment by the Precision Solutions team consists of a visual site inspection and floor level survey, providing an obligation-free estimate to re-level and repair the foundation and floors. The company has developed its own unique Precision System, designed to suit the Canterbury environment. Working hard to assist homeowners as they navigate their way through the remedial process, Precision Solutions also takes care of engineering and consents to ensure your property meets the requirements for continued insurance and reinsurance. “Having a medium sized crew of very capable guys has allowed us kept our standards extremely high,” Charles says. “We treat your home as if it were our own, going above and beyond throughout the process.” Call Precision Solutions on 0800 775 38 35

s the weather warms up, in an effort to keep our homes cool and fresh, we often leave our windows and doors open. Along with allowing a range of insects to invade our space, it can also pose a threat to our safety and valuables. Installing an insect screen keeps the insects at bay and a security screen adds another layer of defence against a potential burglary or unwanted intrusion, says Murray Hartley, of Homeplus Canterbury. “We offer the full range of products, depending on your needs and budget – fixed, hinged, retractable or magnetic screens for both windows and doors – colour-matched and fitted internally and externally.” The Venette pleated retractable screen door or window screen is a stylish, architectural solution, blending seamlessly into its surroundings. Robust and modern, the Venette can be custom-made for single, double, bifold and multiple stacking doors, manufactured to fit your window and door joinery exactly. “Another advantage is the unimpeded entranceway, eliminating the trip hazard at just 2.5mm.” Using top-quality European materials and technology, all HomePlus screens are New Zealandmade, durable and environmentally-friendly. Triboard housing has proven strength and performance during earthquakes and severe weather conditions.

A

three-layered wall panel, Triboard has a wood strand core sandwiched between an MDF outer skin. It is produced under strict quality controls and passes the most stringent building standards. A superior inner uniform strength, throughout a dimensionally stable core provides excellent load-bearing capabilities and stability when building with earthquake and adverse weather events in mind. Triboard possesses a high in-plane rigidity required for earthquake and wind bracing resistance, its movement limited by the connections used. Sliding is prevented by connections at the floor and ceiling, while overturning is prevented by connections to abutting walls. Connection to other wall panels and the ceiling is by way of nails or screws and connections to the floor are made with galvanised steel angles, nails, screws and cast-in floor framing anchors.

PROVEN STRENGTH AND PERFORMANCE DURING EARTHQUAKES The instructions in the technical literature for connection of Triboard wall panels to the rest of the structure must be followed carefully to ensure all loads can be carried safely.

Triboard’s MDF surface provides a smooth finish for painting or overlaying. A combination of smooth surfaces with inner strength make it ideal for a wide range of internal structural and non-structural applications from panel housing, structural walls, floors, fire rated doors and intertenancy walls, solid core doors, bracing panels, bench tops and shelving. HAVE FAITH BECAUSE YOU’VE GOT TO

By Rhonda Mitchell

The rebuild has featured many a bump in the road for most of us, but one man who has left no stone unturned in his quest for renaissance is Antony Gough. Forged in the fire of Antony’s vision, The Terrace, a glamourous and aesthetically pleasing precinct featuring innovative, thoughtful design, comes to life this summer with twenty different hospitality environments open with minimum hours of 11am – 11 pm seven days, plus commercial space.

T

he Terrace replaces our late-lamented but slightly down-at-heel Strip, not only literally and physically, but viscerally in hearts and minds. Symbolising the awakening of the city from its coma, the interplay of The Terrace with the flowing lifeblood of the Avon/ Ōtākaro and the warmth of a Canterbury summer will see our city pulsing with vitality again. Indeed, it feels as if the opening of The Terrace

is a formative moment in our long rebuild process, one which will see many a throat choked up – not this time with the swirling dust we’ve grown used to, but with emotion. One of so many wonderful new builds in the city, the very public yet very personally passionate, process of bringing The Terrace to life gives it a talismanic feel, symbolising the strength and confidence, leadership and faith necessary to get to this point.

THE TERRACE

canterbury build

THE TERRACE

For Antony Gough, defining himself as an owner rather than a developer in the rebuild is a crucial distinction. It prescribes his mantra “optimise, not maximise” and manifests in aesthetic and social benefits for the city: site coverage is a mere 50 per cent rather than the more usual 80-90 per cent, and you won’t find “eight stories of box”. Designed to appear as if created by six different architects over a 50-year period, the buildings are different sizes, shapes, and textures, while facades and verandas deliberately don’t line up. The balance of site coverage is made up of walkways, lanes, and hidden loading docks. The intended effect is organic with delightful “points of discovery”; there is a gradual reveal as if exploring an environment that predates planning rules.

Antony’s favourite building is timber clad, although both the Core 10 rusty steel and the black aluminium faceted buildings are pretty special too. Taking an intergeneration view means all the materials are high quality. “I am an owner not a developer, so there is no possibility of me selling and making maintenance someone else’s problem.” You will see fittings in brass and stainless steel, bridges link the two-storey outdoor balconies so you could bar hop without touching the ground, while the feature bowed windows are carbon coated and genuinely curved rather than faceted. Our human need for greenery is not forgotten with the Hereford Street building featuring purple scented Wisteria,

a deciduous plant carefully chosen to produce light and shade at the appropriate times, which will grow on stainless steel wires. There will be green vistas in the lanes and hospitality outlets will feature their own planter boxes. A 100-year-old ginkgo tree will play a starring role, having been rescued from a demolition site. It is currently being nurtured at a nursery while it awaits its new home. Attention to detail is obvious, with citizens the beneficiaries: laneways do not line up across the block to prevent wind tunnels created by Christchurch bugbears, the easterly and southerly; the taller Westpac block is positioned to the south to stop wind, but not cause shade; the project blends with the city’s riverside

development by using granite pavers sourced from the same quarry and, while the site slopes 1.2 meters from Cashel to Hereford Streets, you are unlikely to detect this because each building’s platform is stepped to account for the angle; there are separate service and human lifts, so you will never share your ride with something you’d prefer to meet on a plate elegantly garnished. For Antony Gough, The Terrace has been an act of faith and a true labour of love. As we learn at school, the course of true love never does run smooth, but for Cantabrians, the results of love’s labours will be the basis of many a midsummer night’s dream.

HIGH STREET’S

EXCITING NEW EDGE The re-emergence of High Street as a fashion hub is about to take another step forward, with the opening of the former Work and Income NZ building at 231 High Street, following refurbishment by Element 17.

“W

e now have a tenant confirmed for the first floor and we’re in negotiations with retailers to fill the three ground floor retail units,” says Savills agent Ryan Geddes, who is handling leasing. Change Healthcare, formerly McKesson, has leased the first floor, which has about 600m2 of openplan office space. The company is part of a global group which provides healthcare IT solutions. “We had a lot of interest in the upstairs office space, given its CBD location and the vision of the owners and architects,” Ryan says. “We’re seeing a similar response for the ground floor retail units, which offer a prime spot between H&M and Strange’s Lane.” The retail units are most likely to be leased to clothing

retailers, given the ‘edgy’ design of the refurbished building and the nature of the surrounding tenants both pre and post-earthquake, Ryan says. “This block is considered prime, core retail space in the CBD, and the fact it’s so close to H&M is a strong drawcard for fashion retailers. This location is emerging as a favoured spot for streetwear, echoing the pre-earthquake tenant mix.” Stencil and AS Colour are due to open in Strange’s and Bonnington House, with Hunters and Collectors about to start a refurbishment of the adjacent building to the north. “We’re finding certain tenants who were established in High Street before the earthquakes are now gravitating back.”

ELEMENT 17 – 231 HIGH STREET

The building was strengthened following the 2011 earthquakes, which gave Element 17 and subcontractor Whyte Construction the opportunity to strip the building back to its core, keeping the characteristics they saw potential in and building on that with the vision they had for its new incarnation. “The cladding needed to be timeless and work with the neighbouring Strange’s and Bonnington House buildings,” Element 17 Designer Chris Rive says. “Through standing seam steel cladding, we continued the vertical lines of the buildings to maintain the harmony along High Street. Architectural Tray Roofing’s execution and detailing was spot on,” he says. “In contrast to the cleanliness of the cladding, careful use of band-sawn cedar brings an organic aspect, reflecting the use

of natural materials like stone and brick found in the surrounding buildings.” Internally, the post-earthquake strengthening steel has been left exposed, explains Element 17 Designer Sharon van Kampen. “It contrasts with the clean fresh white of the walls and adds interest; a reference to the building’s history. “The industrial feel is continued throughout the office fit-out with the existing concrete floors polished and the central concrete columns left exposed, with glimpses of the street art still in place from the building’s past.” To the rear of the building, a ‘box’ was constructed to house all the new services between the two floors, including a Vestner lift while, in the front, the deeply inset windows frame a panoramic view over High street.

WAYNE MURRAY BUILDERS - HTOY

T

he Fendalton house was designed by architects Mason and Wales, with input from Cashmore and Colleagues. Intricate architectural interpretation is where the Wayne Murray team excels. The project combines a 1920’s-inspired design theme with modern flair, allowing for something unique. A total rebuild was required after the quakes, but the result stands as a piece of timeless workmanship. “When viewed from the outside, a lot of people don’t realise they’re seeing a new-build. That’s because we’ve reinstated highquality design elements of the old home,” business owner Wayne Murray says.

Inside lies a theme of whitewashed solid oak throughout. The ground floor’s higher ceilings, plus artfully proportioned windows give a feeling of space and sanctuary. Light fittings – some original, some painstakingly selected, recreate the era. Enabled by IAG, this award-winning dwelling is proof that a rebuild does not have to do away with the character, fixtures, or feel of the original design. he girls are so excited to be in it, learning in it. They are thrilled,” Pauline says. The finishing touches are being applied with the expectation it will be fully operational in November. “It’s been a fabulous opportunity to redesign our teaching and learning spaces.” Arrow International NZ tendered successfully to be the main contractor for the construction phase. “The project entailed the build of a new performing arts centre on the former site of the auditorium and music suites that were damaged and subsequently demolished,” says Craig Byers, Project Director at Arrow.

The PAC is connected to the main teaching block and integrated to the existing site with extensive external landscaping works. Internally, the building has a high number of timber finishes and exposed aggregate panels. The new complex is purpose built for the arts programme. There are general art rooms, music practise and performance rooms, a digital technology suite, a photography studio, and a 275-seat theatre. It also incorporates the administration offices, the school’s main reception, and principal’s office. “There is a greater feeling of light and space,” Pauline says. “It’s grand. It’s beautiful. I love it.”
