Powerful Partnerships 20 years of providing a platform for success
Metropol is honoured to work with some hugely successful brands and businesses in Canterbury. As we celebrate our 20 year anniversary, we want to take the opportunity to thank our loyal clients for trusting in our abilities to provide a platform to reach their targeted audiences and grow their businesses.
Twenty years in business is certainly something worth celebrating. Not only is this a mark of a good business, but it is also the mark of a company that grows and adapts with the changing markets. Here at DJ Hewitt Builders, we are also celebrating more than 20 years in business and our 17 years of advertising with Metropol has been both a successful and enjoyable journey. It has been a pleasure to grow together.

During that same time, we’ve been proud to promote the Laservision brand and benefits of our procedures through Metropol. It’s a magazine with its own sights set firmly on the future and has helped us successfully engage with one of our key audiences, delivering outstanding reach and value for our advertising dollar. Congratulations Metropol on your 20th anniversary.
Robert Weir Weir Architecture Managing Director
Congratulations to Metropol on their 20th anniversary! We have been with the Metropol team since we started our business 12 years ago. Having come from a medical background as a GP, having to advertise and promote a new business was a completely different and foreign concept. Lorraine has been fantastic, wisely guiding us and helping promote our business. We have found the editorials to be very beneficial as clients find them interesting and educational. We often have clients bring in old editorials they have been holding onto to discuss the treatment mentioned!
Weir Architecture formed a partnership with Metropol to promote our business, showcase our latest awardwinning projects and to create brand awareness following the breakup up of Weirwalker Architecture. We know that this approach is reaching our target market due to the considerable feedback from our existing clients and potential new clients. I have now worked with the Metropol team for more than 10 years and find them very capable, easy to work with and nothing is ever a problem.

EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE
Melinda Collins
hether it’s tying the knot, getting hitched, or simply taking one’s hand, when it comes to unions, there’s something pretty special about the one that links two people together in marriage. It’s a union which has crossed the social, geographical, religious, cultural, economic and gender divides, with evidence of its existence tracing back to almost the beginning of civilisation itself. Recognised in some way shape or form in almost every society since the beginning of time, it was born from the need to secure a safe environment in which to breed, handle the granting of property rights and protect bloodlines. And yet despite the inherent practicalities behind its formation, marriage has always had love and romance at its very heart. The engagement ring – a custom dating back to Ancient Rome – is believed to represent eternal love and is based on the belief that a vein or nerve ran directly from the ‘ring’ finger of the left hand straight to the heart. There are few areas of modern day life which are as strongly influenced by such ancient customs and traditions as those which relate to the ‘big day’. And yet, despite this, never before have weddings been injected with the degree of personality as what they are today. So if you’re planning your nuptials, you may wish to let tradition be your guide, but make sure you let your personality shine through too. After all, it may just be one day, but it’s one day that you will remember for the rest of your life. Love the Metropol team

How does it feel to have been recognised at such a high level, as one of the 2018 Company of Women Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame Inductees? It was humbling to be recognised amongst such a group of enormously courageous and successful NZ women. However, I am only the face of our company and our success is the result of incredible input from amazing people I have had working alongside me now and in the past, and with fantastic family input and support.
great energy. People talk about finding Untouched World inspiring. The fact that we built the brand on a sustainable model, though ahead of its time from a commercial point of view, meant that we have been global leaders in this space, so have always had highly engaged followers. Strangely after nearly two decades, Untouched World still feels fresh and ‘new’ to me.
Why do you think the business story of Untouched World struck such a chord and, as a result, has become such an incredible success? Untouched World is a brand of enormous depth, the kite logo and brand story has an incredible resonance with people all over the world. It is creative, different and has a
What’s the best part about what you do? Pretty much everything! I love it all. I love the people – our team, our customers, our suppliers, our foundation team. I love the design and creative process as well as production. I wake up and look forward to another day.
You are one of the country’s most successful entrepreneurs, what has been the winning formula for you – hard work, dedication, passion, a great product? Ha ha! All of the above! I think stickability; an utter belief in what you are doing and being prepared to do things differently are key. What has been some of the best advice you’ve ever been given? Early on, it was to not go into partnership with someone else. We looked at partnerships a few times. I was given the sound advice that a partner who shared the same motivation and goals during a start-up phase, wouldn’t necessarily share the same vision in years to come, which could ultimately result in more effort going into running the partnership than the business. Early on it is tempting to take partners on as you don’t know what you are doing. Keeping control has meant we have been able to stick to the values that underpin the business, the raison d’etre that gets me up in the morning.

Can you take us back to the start of Untouched World, what sparked the idea for the business? As I travelled around the world selling our knitwear I had become extremely concerned about the trajectory the planet was on. I could see environmental degradation going on from visit to visit. Government and business talk the world over was all about GDP and financial bottom line. I worried about what could one person, one company could do. The problem was so big, but I came to the conclusion that we had to do something about it. So, long story short, we decided to create a sustainable lifestyle fashion brand. I wanted a brand that would model a new way of doing business, that would highlight that style and quality could be achieved without pollution to water and air, filling landfills or treating workers poorly. Back in those days sustainable clothing had a hemp sack reputation, but I wanted to reach people who were in a position of influence to really make a change. So we had to create luxurious, high quality products that would appeal to that market. I also wanted a brand that would give back, put its money where its mouth is and wanted a project to coalesce the stakeholders and get them thinking about what was happening to the planet. So, Untouched World was born – with the bold vision to use fashion as a vehicle to champion what is possible for our planet and its people.

olly taught tap in Dunedin and continued to teach it when she moved to Christchurch, aged 22. Her love of dance was passed onto her son, Hayden Withers, who graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in 2014, and is now New York based, and wowing audiences at Off Broadway. “Hayden’s my inspiration,” Molly says. The birth of Molls Dolls came about when the mother of a young girl she taught suggested Molly take a class for adults, as well as preschoolers. The same mother also suggested the name Molls Dolls. It was while attending a Masters Games event with a softball team, which Molly says was enormous fun, that she became aware that the Masters had a Dancesports category. She returned home with a plan in mind and wasted no time in putting out the word she was looking to teach tap to adult women. She set up a dance studio in her home and in 2015, Molls Dolls were up and tapping. In 2016 they competed in their first Masters Games in Dunedin. “Our team comprised six ex-tap dancers. We were in the Formation Team section of the Dancesports and the crowds loved us so much that we returned home wearing silver medals!” Fired with such a win, Molls Dolls headed to the Masters at Wanganui in January 2017. “But this time there were 11 of us

(three teams) and we came away with Gold and Silver.” On Waitangi weekend of this year, Molls Dolls competed at the Masters, again; by now the three teams had grown to 21 dancers, aged from 37 to 69. They made a clean sweep, with the red and silver team winning the gold medal, the blue team taking out the silver, and the black and gold team getting bronze. They also got the silver medal in Show Dance. The girls are super industrious when it comes to fundraising. “From May to August we make up to 300 dozen cheese rolls, per run – we’ve even made over 1,200 dozen!” Next up for these indefatigable dames of dance is the Masters Games in October at Timaru and Wanganui in February, 2019. “We’ve also been invited to an Australasian Competition called Follow Your Dreams, with a qualifying competition in Christchurch in August. If we qualify then we’ll be heading to Melbourne in January 2019.” Molly says her dancers inspire her and have brought so much fun into her life. “The girls give me so much joy. I don’t think I would have survived the hard times without them; they make Molls Dolls!” For more information, email molz@xtra.co.nz.

NICK INKSTER (CENTRE) WANTED TO CREATE SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR HIS HOME TOWN. IMAGE NANCY ZHOU
Old meets new
The central city is becoming a hotspot for local talent to realise their creative dreams, with historic buildings providing the inspirational canvas. Such dreams have been realised in the CBD’s grand Old Government Building, which opened in 1913 and now O.G.B is a perfect way to get a taste of old Christchurch, with staff in suspenders and newsboy caps. Owner Nick Inkster talks about his motivation for setting it up, his plans for expansion and the city’s transformation.
1.
What were you doing before you set up O.G.B? I’m a carpenter by trade and was working in Western Australia’s oil and gas industry for seven years. After the earthquakes [of 2010 and 2011] I wanted to come home and give back by spending my hard-earned cash on something special for my home town of Christchurch.
2.
What was the motivation behind opening O.G.B? From the age of 21 my father told me he could see me building my own bar one day. I loved the concept of a bar where people meet, talk and socialise and where the bartender knows your name. I love old buildings so after the earthquakes I had my eye on one location in the city – the Old Government Building.

What drew you to the Old Government Building? Cathedral Square. I love that it is the heart of our city and always will be. The Old Government Building is, I believe, Christchurch’s Buckingham Palace. I was always drawn to it as a kid when I used to bus into the Square from Dallington/ Linwood growing up. So many of my customers, somewhere along their life, have come into contact with the Old Government Building. There are many, many stories, which is another reason why it is so special.
Can you tell us a little bit about your other projects, such as the restaurant opposite the bar and Frederick Woodwards Barber Shop? Frederick Woodward was a local barber tobacconist who had Woodwards & Co back in the late 1800s/early 1900s in Cathedral Square. I’ve honoured him with a timeless, classic-style barber shop. The restaurant will undergo a Gatsbystyle fit out in good time but for now we have a beautiful big grand piano that we have pianists play on every weekend.
Parlour is opening next to the O.G.B soon – what’s the vibe going to be there? Parlour will be the best room in the house, the house being the Old Government Building. It will be a space to speak, bringing people together to generate debate and discussion. It will be where conversation is had, where the ladies can go to talk about the gentlemen.

As the fog descends footsteps approach – closer, closer. You hear laughter – a chilling cackle; you clutch your companion’s arm… surely there’s safety in numbers? From the mist, a raised arm, a bloodied blade – you scream! Too late... Jekyll and Hyde have already entered the theatre.

Is your pet’s diet right for them? There are many things that need to be taken into consideration when looking for the right diet for a pet. This includes their age, activity levels, medical conditions or any allergies they have. A massive amount of information is available on the internet. However, deciphering what information is true, and then applying this to a pet, can be the difficult part. The best thing that someone can do for their furry family members is to discuss their pet’s diet with the professionals.
PET
Nutrition Focus A huge variety of dietary options are available for our four-legged friends. Some great, some not so great – but how does a caring owner really know what is right for their pet? The topic of diet is one discussed often for humans but can be forgotten when it comes to our beloved animals.
What benefits could you see? Feeding a high-quality diet that is balanced by using good, well-sourced ingredients can improve energy levels, digestion, skin and coat quality. Smelly breath? There are diets that can assist with the prevention of dental disease. Arthritis? Diets exist with anti-inflammatory properties to help improve mobility. During February, Ourvets had a focus on nutrition and encouraged pet owners to ask the questions to find out more. “We want pets to have the best nutrition that suits their needs – but equally, we want our clients to understand why we have made a certain recommendation for their pet,” says Ourvets Practice Manager, Sarah Clements. “Certain diets can replace or reduce the need for medication and can provide a hassle-free treatment for some ailments.” For those that feel their pet could benefit from a specific diet or are unsure what benefits they would see from dietary planning and advice, the knowledgeable team at Ourvets is always on hand to discuss. Visit www.ourvets.co.nz.

In veterinary clinics, nutrition is often described as the ‘5th Vital Assessment’ – following closely from heart, lung, temperature and pain assessments. When a diet is looked at in conjunction with all these, it’s easy to see just how important it is – and why vet clinics are keen to start the discussion.

What’s to Come If you’re still thinking Ricoh only supplies photocopiers, then you really need to unclog your paper jam. The company’s latest addition to its suite of business technology solutions contributes to the most exciting advances in signage since Claude first mass produced neon.
R
icoh’s Peter O’Connor says the company’s electronic signage range offers endless possibilities. “Your electronic signage can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be.” If you’re innovative in business but technology isn’t really your bag; if you don’t know your dongle from your daemon, you can still get into electronic signage in a big way. Ricoh supplies and installs, and Peter can talk you through all the options to find a solution to suit your business needs and level of techno-engagement. The smaller interactive screens operate just like a big
iPad on the wall. All the options operate through wireless technology, are cloudbased and require only a wall socket. At its simplest, electronic signage is an indoor screen, running anything from your latest product range, to staff health and safety procedures in the canteen. From there the sky really is the limit – there is outdoor signage, you can put a hologram into a shop window or turn a changing room mirror into a sign and touch the screen to overlay different outfits onto yourself. You can have a video wall in your showroom of multiple 98-inch screens banded together seamlessly, and run screens in numerous
locations from one spot showing the same or even different information. Ricoh also supplies OLED flexible glass bent into waves or stunning shapes, with black back colour contrast, so the picture is crystal clear. A popular option is the interactive touch overlay on a shop window. Real estate agents have found buyers enjoy the ability to swipe a window to view properties of interest, rather than having to wait for old fashioned video to scroll around to a particular house. For more information or electronic signage tailored to your business, email Peter poconnor@ricoh.co.nz.

A ‘one-stop-shop’ for immigration medicals.
An integral immigration role Immigration Express is busy and buzzing like a beehive, and that’s just the way the team likes it. Proud of the role it plays in bringing overseas workers to Canterbury, Immigration Express knows that our rebuild progresses, our factories continue to produce and our cows get milked in part because of its contribution as a ‘one-stop-shop’ for immigration medicals.

The required X-rays, blood tests, biometrics and medicals are all done right there in the clinic which holds ‘Approved Panel Physicians for New Zealand Immigration’ status, and there is free parking outside the door. Hours are from 7am until 5pm but can be extended by special arrangement. The all-inclusive fee is $470 with no hidden extras and no charges for copies of your results. Co-owner Daphne Durning says having recently gone up from three radiographers to five, the team is still busy and always looking for more doctors and medical staff. Daphne’s philosophy is for the business to fit around the team’s circumstances and families, not the other way around. “I always wanted a job that fitted around my life and couldn’t find that, so I have ensured it is integral to our own business,” Daphne says. No wonder it’s such a happy place to visit and a great place to work.

LININGS

By Melinda Collins
Silver linings have been known to take many forms and the latest is a rather fashionable one.
S
omewhere between the fluorescent headbands, shoulder-pads and rollneck skivvies of the 80s, metallics got a bad rap. But now they’re emerging with a glamourous new look and, although head to toe may take the luster off this hot new trend, we’re here to help you find the shiny middle ground. Accessories are the safe bet when you want to shine bright but not overwhelm. Dip your toes in the metallic waters in the more literal sense by starting with footwear, after all, a silver shoe is a pretty safe bet when it comes to putting your best foot forward. A sweet silver clutch can take you from day to night and, and although they say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, silver has been winning some pretty illustrious affections in the jewellery department. The future is certainly looking bright – and shiny.

1. STYLE DOCTOR
By Bridget Hope, Magpie Style Wardrobe Director
ON MY RADAR
CLEAN LINES: A belted wool trench. A perfectly crisp shirt. The perfect pair of pants. With environmental factors pointing harshly against fast-fashion, expert tailoring and clean lines are seeing a resurgence. The buy-once, buy-better philosophy is on the up-and-up as land-fills rise to house cheap mass-produced clothes. Classic cuts and colours are also following suit in hues guaranteed to stand the test of time. Think grey-marl roll-neck sweaters and belted camel coats in high quality natural fibres. There has never been a more relevant time to think about the longevity of what we wear on our backs.
WHAT’S 2. TRENDING FOR WINTER
BERRIES, SPICE & ALL THINGS NICE: The new winter hues see rich colour palettes of berry tones and spicy shades – with the colour of mustard reigning supreme. Great news for black lovers everywhere, these new shades pair perfectly with existing monochrome wardrobes. Knitwear comes in the form of rich raspberry reds, deep blueberry tones and dense saffron shades.
As the temperature plummets, here’s what’s on the fashion horizon. Hold onto your hats, coats and scarves, for there is something for everyone here. Never has a fashion season been so full of contradiction.
3.
EMBELLISHED JACKETS: Last year saw a surge of embellishments on jackets and coats which continues throughout winter. Decorated coats and jackets, while lavish, are also more refined in their detailing. Think finer crystals designed in styles featuring cleaner lines. Beaded embroidery continues for evening – only with even more sequins added than in previous years.

KIMONO ME PRETTY: Love them or loathe them, printed and textured kimonos continue their reign through winter and into Spring/Summer. A god-send on fuller arms, a well-placed Kimono can hide a multitude of sins. Worn over a sleek black dress or narrow pants and floaty top – the kimono delivers an air of fashion confidence on even the chilliest winter night. The new season kimonos are adorned with artful prints and velvet cuffs and lapels.
4.
ART ATTACK: While the political landscape on the global stage feels uneasy at the best of times, high-fashion has become decidedly more playful. Dolce & Gabbana sent models down the runway in a thrashing display of hip-hop princesses and modern Shakespeare muses. Closer to home, Trelise Cooper saw butterflies painted on camouflage jackets and bold “I Got This” slogans painted across long utilitarian coats.
6.
And now for…THE TRENDS TO RETIRE: While these styles have served us well, it’s time to say good-night (for now anyway) to: 1. Overthe-knee suede boots. 2. Bare-shoulder tops. 3. Ironic branded tees. The sun has set for you - quite literally!

uilding great relationships with our customers and providing the very best customer service we can is at the heart of our approach to retail.” There will be nibbles and drinks from 10am to 6pm and some special deals, because it’s little wonder customers from all over the city and as far afield as Ashburton have embraced the store, with its reputation spreading rapidly. This is a store that belies its unassuming suburban location with an elegant layout and the quality of the clothing. “We offer really lovely clothing that has been well-looked after, if even worn at all – clothing that deserves its life ‘to be continued’.” More often than not the clothes here are beautifully cut designer pieces at a fraction of the cost. Amanda is very strict about the as-new quality of the pre-loved clothing and the cleanliness of everything in store, where pre-loved items for women and men line the racks alongside the new. Besides clothing, the store stocks distinctive and often quirky gift items. “We love to have a bit of fun and our customers appreciate that too.” Open seven days at 48a Bryndwr Road – until 5.30pm on weekdays and from 10am to 4pm on weekends.

Little princesses can have their nails done and, for men, MAN-icures and sport pedicures. Bella takes hygiene very seriously, using a medical-grade autoclave sterilisation system. Also avoiding nasty

You’ve commanded a significant following with your fashion blog, how do you curate content that appeals to a diverse audience? I try to make content that I’d like to see and read myself. I think this appeals to a variety of different people because it’s authentic and people appreciate that – especially now that blogging has become so lucrative. Being open and honest with my readers is always my number one policy. Tell us about the launch of your YouTube channel. How did you decide on this as an additional platform? Diving into YouTube has been a natural progression from my blog and the content I create for it. I’ve really enjoyed being able to show my readers another side of my life and personality through videos – something I feel static blog posts can lack. It’s also a lot of fun creatively to challenge myself in a different way.

New Zealand harvests the cream of the crop when it comes to fashion, but it’s also got a down-to-earth vibe that gives style the freedom to roam without rules or conventions. It’s a liberating juxtaposition that plays out oh-so-beautifully on one of NZ’s most recognised and celebrated fashion blogs, Stolen Inspiration, narrated by Kendra Jeffery. What do you think is original about NZ fashion compared with the rest of the world? There’s a lot more experimentation rather than sticking to a particular style in NZ. If you want to dress fancy one day but in Birkenstocks and jeans the next, no one would give it a second thought. We get the best of both worlds, because we are loyal to our laid-back nature but aren’t afraid to try new trends and make them our own. What have been some of your most breathtaking moments on this creative journey? There have been so many, but most memorable was my trip to NYC. Being recognised for your creativity and flown there to explore it was unreal. Never in a million years would I have thought such an unbelievable opportunity could come from my 15-year-old self making a little internet blog when she was bored.
“T Shop Local By Hannah Davison
It’s no secret that the accessibility of offshore products through online shopping has taken its toll on local retailers. One Christchurch-based entrepreneur, Joel Kendall, has made it his mission to help local boutiques through the power of ecommerce. Founded in 2011, Mode.co.nz is now one of New Zealand’s largest online fashion stores.
“There were a lot of stores trying their own thing online but weren’t really succeeding.” “There are so many international companies targeting New Zealand customers, it’s really hard for these small stores to compete. There were a lot of stores trying their own thing online but they weren’t really succeeding. So, bringing them together made them stronger,” says Joel, whose background in ecommerce and marketing gave them the boost they needed to gain ground online. “We’re continually working to make Mode a destination to shop – with the added benefit of customers supporting their local boutiques.” It seems to be working; Mode. co.nz already brings together 20 stores from around the country and a customer base in the tens of thousands, while handling all the details in between.

Sweet like
chocolate
I
t may have born the brunt of some misguided criticism at times; heckled for being boring, chastised for being too conservative, overshadowed by more ostentatious shades. But come what may, brown has always stood its ground, and with good reason. From beige and burnt umber to chestnut and cocoa brown, this composite colour was a favoured colour choice in the seventies and in late 2017 it made headlines as the ‘new neutral’ thanks to retail giant Net-a-Porter singing its praises.
Take a big bite out of this new aesthetic, it’s sweet like chocolate!
By Kate Pierson
It’s the underdog. Never a narcissist about what it has to offer. It gets on well with its counterparts. And it’s the colour of chocolate, a great form of escapism. Quite frankly, there’s little to frown about when it comes to brown.
2.
3.
Touted as a counterpoint to other beautiful autumnal shades like forest green, teal and deep red, shades of brown marched with their head held high down the runways of designers like Simone Rocha and Victoria Beckham’s autumn collections. Brown has, in fact, knocked navy blue off its perch and has been unified with black in holy sartorial matrimony. Black and brown are one of the ‘it’ colour couples of the season with white accents and other natural shades the perfect complement. A power dressing shade, brown has become synonymous with empowerment, authority and equally, being grounded; an interesting combination of qualities. In the spirit of celebrating this once controversial hue, we’ve put together a moodboard of wardrobe must-haves. Go on, take a big bite out of this new aesthetic, it’s sweet like chocolate! 1. leverly applied ombre polishes have been a big hit on the catwalks this season, seen at Tom Ford in a combination of black and glitter. It was more metallics at Michael Costello, with rose gold ombre created using three Essie polishes. Stripes have been a big hit everywhere, but different every time. At Tibi a nude manicure was upgraded with black diagonal stripes across both index fingers, at 3.1 Phillip Lim it was one single horizontal line on the ring finger, at Kate Spade it was single vertical line on the index and, at Area NYC, Swarovski crystals made vertical lines running down each nail. The French manicure too has had a 2018 upgrade, with a stripe of green at Alice + Olivia and a check French look for Opening Ceremony. Metropol April 12, 2018 41

Early diagnosis is vital so it’s important to go to an expert who is trained in detecting skin cancer – a doctor at Molecheck.
Why Molecheck?
EARLY DETECTION DOES MATTER Just like blood pressure, mammograms or a dental checkup, it’s important to monitor your skin’s health. As we say goodbye to summer, it’s time to tick off your skin check as well. Early detection matters.
W
e’ve enjoyed the sunshine, now we should check what damage it may have caused. Even though skin cancer is usually easy to spot and treat, certain types
can be deadly when left untreated. Although anyone can develop a skin cancer, those with a history of high sun exposure (particularly sunburns) and fair skinned people are the most vulnerable. The facts are stark:
The skin cancer doctors at Molecheck have had extensive training in dermoscopy and skin cancer management. They aim to detect skin cancer at the earliest possible stage using a hand-held, surface microscope called a dermoscope. Skin cancer can occur on any part of the skin, not just in moles. The Molecheck team uses the latest dermoscopy techniques to view structures beneath the skin surface (including tiny cancer blood vessels) which enables them to diagnose melanoma and other skin cancers at the very earliest possible stage, before they can be seen with the naked eye. All Molecheck patients receive a thorough and comprehensive skin cancer and melanoma check. And as well as skin cancer detection, dermoscopy technology enables Molecheck doctors to confidently diagnose many types of benign growths, which avoids anxiety and unnecessary surgery. Molecheck doctors aim to find any skin cancer at the first consultation. At this consultation, they may also treat pre-cancerous lesions with cryotherapy (also called cryosurgery). Some benign unsightly or unwanted spots, lumps and discolourations may also be able to be treated during the consultation. Get to know your skin by checking it regularly— particularly if you are over 50, have a family history of skin cancer or have had any episodes of bad sunburn as a child. And if a spot has changed, becomes raised, is sore, itchy or scaly, or a new spot appears, it’s a good idea to get it Molechecked. Find out more at admin@molecheck.co.nz or phone 03 355 5089 to make an appointment with the experienced team at Molecheck. Metropol April 12, 2018 43

QUALITY,
Comfort & Style The classic, clean and contemporary collection at Kjole has a focus on timeless style, with its exclusive range of Scandinavian clothing.
jole, meaning ‘dress’ in Danish, is located at the new Boulder Point Retail Precinct in Hanmer Springs. Mother and daughter duo Stephanie and Penny Suckling opened the store in December last year. Predominantly importing clothing from Denmark, Stephanie was introduced to the clothing range and was so impressed by the quality, comfort and style, she was eager to share her fortuitous discovery. “I worked in fashion leading up to starting this business, and the connection was established 20 years ago when we employed a young Danish boy, whose brother is part-owner of the Danish clothing company and he offered us the opportunity to introduce the range to New Zealand.” While aimed mostly at the 35-plus age group, there is also an Australian label called ‘Wite’ for younger shoppers, she says. “Penny and I enjoy and wear a lot of the clothing – the fabrics have a soft, comfortable feel. This range is great for women looking for something a bit different, while being fashionable and stylish with a paredback look.” Kjole has already attracted a loyal following of repeat customers, and the jeans are a favourite – mid-waisted, with the perfect amount of stretch. The team also provide a styling service and a friendly, welcoming environment. Visit the store or shop online at www.kjole.co.nz.

A UNIQUE FAMILY Everything about Lemongrass is unique. It’s a Thai restaurant, located off the beaten track, in a hazelnut orchard north of Rangiora.
I
t is the true definition of a family business. Sriamorn Reavill and husband Paul bought the Loburn property and house, later building the restaurant onto their home. At Lemongrass you are likely to be waited on by Aaron, 11, or be joined at your table by head chef Sriamorn for a chat. The children play a part in the restaurant. It’s their business, too. Chelsy, 9, is usually in the kitchen helping mum. She cooks a mean stir fry and makes great spring rolls. Aaron and family friend, Liv, who is 15 and whose mum Shirley also works in the kitchen, often take care of front of house. They are confident and knowledgeable of food preparation, the menu and the foundations of good
customer service. In addition to their schooling and sports achievements, they work together the create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, amazing food and a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Paul, too regularly chips in in the kitchen. There is al fresco dining, or between courses take a stroll in the orchard and relax in the country silence. The food is spectacular, everything you expect Thai cuisine to be – bold flavours, aromatic delights, contrasts of texture and colour, all with a spicy kick. You must make a booking at Lemongrass. It’s so relaxed that if there are no bookings, it probably won’t be open. When it is, the drive is more than worth it. For bookings phone 03-310-3102.

A DELICIOUS
CULINARY CRUSADE
“My dream was to be a famous Bollywood actor – yet somehow I have ended up in hospitality!” chuckles Amar Singh, owner of the Corianders restaurant group. Amar was indeed a Bollywood actor in India for a time, as well as a model and theatre actor.
For every season By Kate Pierson
Whether you want a winter wonderland or a spring soiree, every season can play to its strengths; it just comes down to which of the weather gods you want to work their magic on your big day.
W
hile we don’t like to deal in cliches, we are keen advocates of what each season is synonymous with when it comes to creating a beautiful vibe, so here’s what you can expect or strive for if you’ve got a certain season in mind for your matrimonial celebrations.
WEDDINGInspirations
ut with downtimes in the entertainment industry and the need to pay the rent, Amar began working in hotels. The rest, as they say, is history. Amar moved up through hotel management ranks and, with his eventual move to New Zealand in 2000, learned more about the cuisine of his native Northern India. Christchurch diners will remember him from his time at Gloucester Street’s Little India and Merivale’s wonderful Leinster House. Amar was almost lost to hospitality however, after Leinster House was earmarked for demolition. He was about to take up real estate, but was saved by a finance broker acquaintance who persuaded him to set up his own restaurant. And so, Corianders was born, first of all in Rolleston. Now Amar wants to pass on his knowledge and love of Indian food through a series of Master Classes at the St Asaph Street Corianders, once a month on Wednesdays from 3pm to 4.30pm, beginning on 2 May. The cost of $30 per person includes a glass of bubbles and all the ingredients to cook one of the succulent dishes on the Corianders’ menu. There are even aprons provided. To book for Amar’s Master Class phone Miranda on 021 339 707. This will not only be informative, but also great fun.
Spring: Nothing can beat the blossoms and sweet smells of spring, from the delicious produce to the romantic blooms. All things bright and beautiful come with dependable spring, which also provides a gorgeous backdrop for photos. Summer: It’s the most wonderful time of the year when guests have great energy; the weather is usually quite consistent; you can enjoy your gown without having to cover up; there are more options for an outdoor event. What’s not to love? Autumn: Who wouldn’t gush over this seasonal showstopper? It’s arguably the most picturesque of the seasons with its rich colours – yellows, golds, chocolate brown. The perks of an autumn wedding are multitudinous. The chance of rain isn’t as high; it’s harvest time so there’s an abundance of delicious foods; costs are still reasonably affordable. Winter: Think roaring fire; mulled wine; amaryllis, orchid, greenery and berry bouquets; furs (faux, to be kind) and snow if you win the wedding weather lottery. This glorious season has many benefits – potential increases in vendor availability in the ‘off-season’; a honeymoon in the sun to escape the grey skies; the divine details – wreaths, candles, a cosy ambience. The All Girl Big Band (AGBB) drew a crowd of more than 4,000 when they performed at Ingham’s Lazy Sundays event in February. “They were dancing on the grass,” says AGBB Musical Director and alto saxophonist Lana Law. “What a buzz!”
W
ith an eye to maximising their exposure, the band – described as a ‘powerhouse of sound’ – plans to record a music video with an expected release date in July of this year. “Our distinction is that we’re the only all-female ‘big band’ in New Zealand,” says baritone saxophonist Helen Renaud, ”The video’s about getting our name out there – to show we’re not a gimmick, but are trying to find our niche. Our priority is to have a quality online presence so we reach a wider audience.” Lana says their focus for the next few months is on their recording session – after that comes preparation for the Big Band Festival, Labour Weekend.

Each year the AGBB does one major themed concert in tribute to performing women; in 2016, vocalist Kate Taylor gave a magnificent acknowledgement of the late, great Natalie Cole and in 2017 they performed ‘The Ages’, celebrating women in music from the 1930s to today. Apart from its regular Jazz After Work gigs, touring concerts, and corporate events, the AGBB also does private functions. “It’s always lovely to perform at these, because you know you’re helping create an awesome memory for everyone, and something unique to take away.” Visit www.facebook.com/ babesofthebigband or www.allgirlbigband.co.nz.

f you are planning your big moment and looking for some guidance on your gown, then look no further. We’re delivering a beautiful overview of the must have looks for 2018.
Style guide BRIDAL GOWN
Chic capes: Solange Knowles is perhaps one of the most famous examples of brides who donned a cape or capelet on their wedding day. Hers was the perfect conclusion to an already-edgy jumpsuit that she donned while making her big entrance on a vintage bicycle. A firm favourite with designers during Bridal Fashion Week, the cape is for the bride that wants to contemporise tradition and become a caped crusader in lieu of wearing a veil. Off the shoulder: A modest amount of glowing skin can play peek-a-boo in gowns with detached sleeves. Designers like Monique Lhuillier are giving us the cold shoulder in 2018, but in the best possible way. We are seeing a lot of off-the-shoulder styles, some even with puff sleeves in the mix. It might sound like the eighties are planning a comeback, but we can assure you there is nothing retro about this aesthetic, just pure romance written all over the look.
By Kate Pierson
The sentiment and commitment of any wedding day are, of course, the most important statements, but let’s be honest, the piece de resistance – the moment that leaves guests waiting with bated breath – is the entrance of the bride in her chosen attire, most traditionally, a gown.
Mid-length: A floor-skimming gown has its foot firmly in traditional bridal territory, but hems are coming up for 2018 – to a very respectable mid-length. Modest and modern; this style pays homage to 1950’s style stars like Marilyn Monroe. This is the perfect compromise for the bride who still wants the glamour that a gown affords, but the comfort and practicality of a dress that can transition from the ‘I Do’s’ to the dance floor.

A healthy glow
Transitioning to grey hair
G
rey hair is on trend right now so there has never been a better time to transition from your permanent coloured hair. Going grey is a big decision and many, if not most, women freely admit they’re afraid of looking old or that people will treat them differently because
of their salt-and-pepper tresses. When going grey, you need to consider if you want to blend it subtly or fully embrace it. The good news is, there are many ways Salon E can make the transition an easier one. With Schwarzkopf Professional’s new Absolutes range with Silver White Tonal Refiner, the talented team can eliminate the sixweekly regrowth problem and transition clients close to their natural grey hair. Now there is no need to cut your hair to a very short length in order to make that change. Call Salon E now to arrange a consultation.

C
ongratulations on your upcoming wedding! You’ve been planning since the proposal, now it’s time to start working towards healthy glowing skin for the big day. The team at Caci suggests beginning your pre-wedding regime six months prior. Start with a free consultation at a Caci clinic, where the team can recommend the best options for your skin. Treatments suggested may include microdermabrasion for uneven skin texture, photo rejuvenation for redness and dark spots or sun damage, micro needling for scarring, or appearance medicine for lines and wrinkles. hen it comes to the ‘Big Day’, every detail plays its part in making the overall impact, right down to the outfit accents. Take the groom’s and groomsmen’s belts, for example. At face value they might seem like a fairly inconspicuous addition to the suited and booted gents, but actually, they are that missing piece of the sartorial puzzle and, when they come from Village Leathercraft, they well and truly transcend their practical status. A style statement in their own right, they carry a very special message – quite literally. Village Leathercraft’s name says it all – it is the master and maker of fine leather products and belts are a handsome part of the offering. Fully customised options have become a favourite amongst grooms who want to gift their groomsmen something they can keep for life after serving their allimportant duties. Owner Peter O’Brien describes the privilege and joy in embossing personalised details on a belt and says he can come up with ideas from scratch or work with his clients on their own concepts.

here’s debate over who actually said it, but we’ll take a gamble on the fact it was Churchill: “I didn’t have time to write you a short letter, so I wrote you a long one”. It’s an enduring conundrum: how to say something compelling, quickly. If you’re getting tongue tied ahead of tying the knot, here are our top tips for those everelusive wedding vow ideas:
1.
Set the tone: Just as you’d want to coordinate the style of your invites with your decorations; your gown with your shoes; your hair with your makeup, you need to agree a tone for your vows with your significant other. Before embarking on your literary journeys, get your heads together to determine the mood you want to create. If one of you writes a romantic declaration while the other resorts to gimmicks or cliches, it could dampen the matrimonial mood.
2.
Get to the point: It’s hard to imagine that on the most important day of your life, people’s attention may wander away from you – you are the centre of attention, after all! Be that as it may, keeping your vows clear and concise, and no more than a couple of minutes in length, will make for an endearing and engaging exchange.
I take thee.. By Kate Pierson
Wedding vows: they’ve commanded a lot of attention over the years. They’ve made us laugh, they’ve made us cry and sometimes, for those of us who have had to scribe these wedding days words, they’ve really intimidated us.
62 April 12, 2018 Metropol
3.
Plagiarism encouraged: This may seem like we are going against all our journalistic ethics, and it is, but if you’re really struggling to wax lyrical about your loved one, then by all means, let Google be your inspiration. Sometimes a blank canvas can be really overwhelming and all it takes is a few reference points to help you on your way.
4.
Consult your officiant: This is often an afterthought, but it’s actually important, particularly if you are marrying in a church or observe a religion and there are some mandatory inclusions.
5.
Practice makes perfect: While most don’t commit their vows to memory – and fair enough too, there’s enough to remember on the day as it is – repetition is your best friend when it comes to your vows. Say them out loud as many times as you can in the lead up to the big day so you can get acquainted and comfortable in the language without tripping over your words or letting nerves undermine your delivery.

Delicious travelling feasts
‘H
ave kit, will travel’ is Twentyfour Catering’s mantra. The team specialises in weddings throughout the South Island, and owner and Chef Chantelle Quinn says the flexibility to travel means the team can conjure up delicious feasts anywhere, often with just two ovens and a barbeque. “We are very versatile and have said yes to every location so far, from the Canterbury high country to Wanaka.” By working with the bride and groom to ensure the logistics work, the menu is tailored to each wedding. One groom asked for his grandmother’s adored apricot and almond cheesecake, so Chantelle created it in minis. Twentyfour’s style might be best described as classic French with Kiwi flavours. The food is rustic and often features a lot of protein: six different meats could be served over three courses. Chantelle gets a kick out of seeing wedding guests in their exquisite outfits and fascinators, heartily tucking into a lamb cutlet and going back for more!

iona’s Food is personality on a plate – a delicious affordable catering option for any wedding. For 11 years, Fiona van der Pol has run a boutique catering business. Her only qualification: bringing up four children! Cooking from the heart, she’s super-efficient, enlisting daughter Flossie when needed. Freshly made, nothing’s from the freezer. “Long live rustic,” Fiona says. French-rustic style springs to mind with her flavoursome plates. Slivers of lemon slice have a crunchy base melding into a velvety zest. Ginger crunch is equally sublime, as are bacon-wrapped sausages glazed in honey, mustard and rosemary. There’s crowd-pleasers aplenty in her repertoire. Lunches, morning and afternoon teas for the likes of PGG Wrightson and the Chamber of Commerce are her bread and butter. However, the sassy home cook has catered many weddings with delectable sharing platters. She also hosts group cooking lessons, ending in laughterfilled banquets - ideal for hen nights of the culinary kind.

WEDDINGInspirations Blooming beautiful
We’ve long been seduced by the culinary cool cred of the edible flower trend to add flavour to salads and soups. Now our clever cake makers are having a dalliance with decorating of the floral kind and it’s got our mouths watering.
Beautiful brushstrokes
Brushstroke cakes are currently trending in a big way. These art-inspired creations consist of melting chocolate onto wax paper and using a paintbrush to create ‘feathers’ which are placed on a cake once they harden.
Black beauty
The beauty is in the simplicity of this tasty trend. All dressed in black, she may appear dark and moody at face value, but like the LBD, is actually chic and understated, especially when brought to life with several textured tiers.
Floral fixation
This romantic trend is right at home with a spring wedding. A new take on the watercolour trend of recent years, hand-painted floral details are one of the prettiest wedding cake trends of the year.
Gilded garnishing

By Melinda Collins
Once upon a time, wedding cakes were a one size fits all affair – that is to say, dried fruit and white fondant were the order of the day. That was – of course – pre-Instagram.
A
s our cake creations have become increasingly elaborate, they are taking a bigger bite out of the bridal budget. But as we’re sure your inner sweet tooth will assert, it’s a worthy cause, with their painstaking design details an opportunity to stamp one’s personality on
the big day, as much as the wedding dress itself. If you’re looking to make a statement at your dessert table, it seems 2018 is living up to the culinary hype. We have hunted out the wedding cake trends 2018/2019 couples will totally adore.
Gold leaf is being added to fondant or buttercream frosting to create a gilded finish. Strategic scattering gives a rustic shimmer or cover one or two tiers to truly dazzle your guests.
Fig-ment of your imagination
Many brides to be are going back to basics, with simple buttercream cakes featuring one fruity flavour – figs. Though fruit wedding cakes are not new by any stretch, figs are the fruit of the moment. Expect to see these dark purple fruits dotting wedding cakes throughout 2018.
Naked & famous
The so-called ‘naked cake’ – which boasts little to no frosting – is the shabby chic of the cake world; a little rustic but oh so glam and its popularity shows no sign of abating in 2018.
Glamorous glass
The most clever of our culinary creators have been taking clear isomalt – a sugar substitute – and colouring and shaping it to create a stained-glass effect.

wner Jen Collett, a teacher turned event stylist, also owns local event style and hire business The Little Carousel. After a number of requests for adult slumber parties, Jen decided to branch out one step further and came up with the idea for Bridal Slumbers. “This was a first of its kind in New Zealand when we launched it, and we are proud to be the original Bridal Slumber company,” she says. Bridal by Little Slumbers has taken Christchurch by storm since it was introduced in August last year, providing a unique way to spend the night before the wedding with your girlfriends – reminiscing, laughing and sharing special times. “It’s a new take on finding a hotel then all taking off to your own rooms,” says Jen. “With Bridal by Little Slumbers, we have the whole set-up completed by the time you get back from rehearsals – picture a glass of bubbles, platters and a whole lot of laughs. The next morning, while you and your bridal party are getting ready, we pack it all up for you, so you don’t have to do a thing.” In addition to the package, the business also offers grazing platters,
beauty treatments and nails for the bridal party, in conjunction with their fantastic partner vendors. “The best part about Bridal by Little Slumbers is that we are not limited to just bridal parties. In fact, our hen’s night and girls’ nights are just as popular, which is fantastic news for just about anyone wanting to get together with friends and relive old childhood memories.” With a modern, boho-inspired theme, the bridal package provides beautiful lace teepees and larger mattresses, for extra comfort. Featuring a gorgeous blush, white and gold/rose gold colour theme – it’s the perfect way to spend time with the bridal party before tying the knot. Little Slumbers has recently launched the Glamping Bell Tent, also taking the Slumbers outside for a natural, bohemian feel. Other options include picnic set ups, movie nights with a projector and screen, gaming nights and couples nights – whether you need the night of the wedding, date night or proposal – every aspect is covered. Whatever the occasion, from hen’s nights to birthday parties, Jen can provide a fun, stress-free option and a range of gorgeous themes to choose from.

must haves HONEYMOON
By Kate Pierson
SEAFOLLY HIGH SUMMER
While we’ve never needed an excuse to keep the style party going long after the curtain has fallen on our big day, the honeymoon presents such a significant opportunity to introduce some chic newbies to our wardrobes that we couldn’t let the opportunity go by without making a fashionable fuss. If your wedding falls in 2018, and you’re planning on jetting off somewhere where the sun never sets, then we’ve got you covered from top to toe with our honeymoon must haves.
1.
Resortwear: Ok, the name is potentially misleading; you don’t actually have to be at a resort to wear it. It could be a beach in the Bahamas or a promenade in Portugal. The aim of this style game is to provide you with sophisticated but practical options for your romantic getaway. Brands like Seafolly, Zimmerman and Marc Jacobs have the style goods.
4.
1.
2.
The ‘It’ bag: Whether it’s an oversized tote or a tiny clutch, having a bag for your personal items is mandatory. There’s not a one-size-fits all accessory for everyone but we play favourites with totes thanks to their versatility. Scale their use up or down at will; whether you just want to pack your daytime essentials, or throw in your entire wardrobe for your honeymoon so you can travel light, then this is your answer.
3.
3.
Make a splash: A chic bathing suit fits into the fundamentals category when you’re flocking to summer fun on your honeymoon. We’ve selected a tongue-in-cheek option, but opt for whatever you feel most comfortable in – it’s absolutely key.
2.
4.
The night and day dress: Having a go-to dress that can transition with ease from day to night means you’re covered when you’re having one of those ‘I’ve got nothing to wear’ moments. We love the styles that are chic enough to escort you to a dinner, but casual enough you can throw it over your ‘kini when you head down to the beach.
5.
Glowing skin: Your honeymoon is the adventure of a lifetime, but it’s also the perfect time to give your skin some R&R time, so be sure to have makeup free days and get back to basics with some great cleansing.
5.
1. MICHAEL KORS COLLECTION RESORT 2018. 2. JAC CADEAUX BAGS AND CLUTCHES. 3. MISSGUIDED X BARBIE WHITE BRIDE SLOGAN SWIMSUIT. 4. WE ARE KINDRED WINNIE SPLIT SLEEVE WRAP DRESS. 5. THE SEEKE.

enerally available from about mid-March until early June, the small, green, egg-shaped fruit is pretty unique to New Zealand – although not native. A distinctive flavour and culinary versatility sees feijoa making their mark on an exceptional range of cakes, salsas, jams and curries. And yet, although we naturally gravitate to some of the more traditional options, such as feijoa crumble, feijoa chutney, feijoa cider or just cut in half, scooped out and eaten raw, we’ve donned our detective caps and hunted out a fruitful range of some of the more unique options that may well become some flavourful favourites. So what not try some of these clever culinary creations or get out your innovative chef’s hat and try some creative creations of your very own.
A FEIJOA FIXATION
• Feijoa, chocolate and ginger croissant pudding • Roasted feijoa and almond shortcake • Walnut shortbread with feijoa and ricotta filling • Traditional English feijoa tart • Feijoa tarte tartin • Feijoa daquiri • Feijoa, honey yoghurt smoothie • Dehydrated feijoa chips • Slow-roasted feijoas recipe with star anise
There’s great excitement in the autumnal air, with feijoa season upon us.

anufactured in Gloucestershire, England, Everhot is a heat storage range cooker. It steadily transfers the heat from its core into its ovens and hotplates, meeting all your cooking needs with exceptional energy efficiency. The ability to run any part of your cooker independently means total control and the timed grill means no more burnt offerings. The sky is the limit with Everhot – slow cooking, baking, roasting, grill or pan and you can do all of those things at once on one range. The smallest Everhot features two ovens and a graduated cast iron hob top. As the size increases, so too do your options. Ovens, plate warmer, induction hobs and simmer plates become opportunities to customise your cooker – and customise in every sense, with each cooker crafted by hand for your order. Colour, size and ovens are among the options to ponder. Everhot ticks the boxes for quality, control, energy efficient, style and function. The difficult choice is often the colour and with a palette of 14, you can be forgiven for taking your time to decide. put your stamp on that First Table online. Mat has aimed for few restrictions, the main one being you can’t book the First Table in the same restaurant twice in row, to spread the opportunities a little wider. A Queenstown local, Mat started with Queenstown restaurants, followed quickly by Christchurch, where there has been very enthusiastic sign-on both by restaurants and diners. A software developer by trade, he put the concept online himself, as well as doing the sales.

his innovative and actually useful (because let’s face it, not all of them are) Kiwi start-up is now in three countries and both hemispheres, while working hard on opening in its fourth country this year. The term win-win is overused, but the First Table concept is genuinely that. It’s like an awesome game of ping pong – the benefits just keep bouncing back between restaurant and diner. It works like this: participating restaurants release bookable dates on the First Table website. Nabbing the actual first table in the restaurant for that date online enables diners in a party of two to four to eat for half price. The restaurant gets diners into the restaurant early; this encourages other diners into the restaurant. First Table diners usually get the window seats; the restaurant gets the visual advertising. First Table diners get unhurried service and the food as it should be; the restaurant receives a very positive review. The diner gets to try somewhere new in a cost-effective way; the restaurant is likely to get happy repeat customers paying full price at peak times. Obtaining a login from the website in New Zealand means you can book First Tables throughout New Zealand, in Australia, London, Bristol and Bath and London in the UK, and Singapore restaurants are soon to be added. There is no membership fee, just an upfront $10 (in New Zealand) when you

A beautiful butchery
alena Hitchcock opened the doors of the store in Rangiora’s High Street in October last year and, although the physical store is still in a period of transformation, it’s already clear the attention to detail she brings to the commercial table. Having been in the industry for twelve years, she recognises the part breeding, health and wellbeing play in creating quality, tasty meat, sourcing off the hoof as much as possible and from farms throughout North Canterbury. “Traceability is important to me – knowing the animal has come from a top local farm and has been well cared for,” Halena says. Along with a team of butchers, she offers an exceptional array of locally sourced meat – lamb, hogget and beef, old fashioned dry cured bacon, free-farmed pork, South Island venison and goat, as well as organic Washcreek lamb. For the kids, there’s the ever-popular crumbed sausages, but its high quality gourmet sausages is where The Butcher’s Mistress excels. “To shop at a butchery means personal care,” Halena says. “We pay close attention to personal tastes and portion control for families of all sizes.” Homekill and wild game processing are also available. Halena and her team can guide you through the cuts, hanging time and small goods which best suit your needs. “We’re passionate about what we do and if someone comes in the door, we will do what it takes to source what they want.” The Butcher’s Mistress, 84 High St Rangiora, phone 03-313 7191.

We’re not proponents of gender stereotypes round here at Metropol, but we won’t deny we were tickled pink by the sight of Dane McGregor, Baker Gatherer, getting his culinary craft on over on his Instagram @bakergatherer in amongst all the lasses. The sweet toothed recipe maker and content creator talks shop on whipping up a concept that was always sure to rise.
It’s exciting to see a bloke baking – often that is a field heavily populated by women. What inspired your passion? I’m sure every male can relate to food being the key to any good relationship. I’m no different, although I do have a huge sweet tooth. From a young age, I’ve always enjoyed being in the kitchen and scouring through cooking books, so I can assure you that eating with my eye has definitely fuelled a passion. Do you come up with original ideas or look to innovate on existing recipes? Quite a lot of my ideas are all original, although I do like to experiment with different elements which stem from existing ideas or concepts. For example, if you already had two well-known desserts or pieces of baking, why not fuse them together to create something new, unique and get people curious about making it themselves? I’ve used the word ‘Frankensteining’ before and that’s exactly what I do, experiment and see what comes to life. Do you think the true art of baking has been lost to the ‘baking in a box’ phenomenon? Definitely not. I’ve even considered branching out into creating ‘baking boxes’ myself to allow people to replicate my recipes at home. I believe they have their place in the kitchen, either for convenience or allowing the public to try different recipes and products. On the other hand, there are still those people who are more traditional and prefer to bake from scratch. I’m probably more of a traditionalist myself, most likely because I’ve grown up with home baking and I generally already have everything I need in my pantry and cupboards ready to go. What’s in the mix this year for you and your recipes this year? I have lots of neat ideas moving forward, such as creating new recipes and content for my website. But I do want to spend more time networking and building positive relationships with brands I’ve already been lucky enough to work with, although with plenty of new ones too.

New Zealand once led the world in cups of tea consumed per person. So it seems somewhat strange to have to put one’s hat in the ring to defend the humble cuppa.
B
ut despite the seemingly all-encompassing nature of the Kiwi coffee culture, tea drinking is on the rise. And not just in the most traditional of ways. While sales of herbal and green tea continue to rise for home consumption, it’s the number of tea ‘bars’ popping up that is catching attention on a global scale. Locally, Poplar Social Club cocktail maestro Charles Gillet has been using Dilmah Tea in his cocktails. Dilmah features some clever cocktail and mocktail recipes on its website, ranging from Colombo Ice Cream Soda, to Mango Tango and Fruit Volcano. Not a new concept by any means, there’s historical precedent for tea in our tipples, with tea an ingredient used in our early punches. Now, we’re starting to think of tea with the same reverence as coffee.

American industrialist and Ford Motor Company founder Henry Ford once said, “Any colour, so long as it’s black”. Renoir once described it as the “queen of all colours”, while JMW Turner once said, “If I could find anything blacker than black, I’d use it”.
A
s physics would have it, the absence or complete absorption of visible light means black isn’t technically a colour. And yet, despite this sinister description, this stylish shade is equally dramatic, sophisticated and handsome. Infinitely versatile, it has been recognised for its conservative elegance as much as it has for its association with counter-culture throughout history, from beatnik to bikers and black-worshipping goths. When it comes to creating masculine interiors, black hues draw on this clever colour’s association with the midcentury gangster glamour of film noire, drawing on cinematic sets as much as real life, and bouncing off the colour psychology of power and glamour. Yes, we’re dealing in stereotypes here. But these are open for everyone to exploit – gender aside.

CREATING COMMUNITIES By Tony Clarke of Ikon Architects
We recently wrote about the importance of fostering caring and inclusive communities as key to aged care design. IKON Architects believes strongly in this philosophy, so it has been rewarding to exercise our expertise and passion for creating quality retirement facilities, working with Bupa and Armitage Williams Construction designing the final stages of the Bupa Parkstone Retirement Village.
n the corner of Peer Street and Athol Terrace in Ilam, it includes three apartment blocks and a new dedicated Community Centre, featuring a large glazed community lounge, café, indoor pool and gym. This building links the existing community lounge with the refurbished main entry foyer and outdoor courtyard space, creating a central communal hub for the entire village community to enjoy. The development will add approximately 140 new apartments to the site. Apartments are becoming more popular for retirement villages, with the higher density allowing for a larger, more diverse resident population, fostering a sense of community and greater security. Standardised apartment planning and the innovative use of residential materials also results in high quality, low maintenance units that fit in with their residential context, without the worry or hassle of garden upkeep. In fact, here residents will be able to enjoy the landscaped communal outdoor areas designed by the team of Sean Dixon and Brad Parkes of Design Squared Landscape Architects. With the first block of apartments now under construction and the community centre soon to commence, IKON Architects is excited to be a part of the final stages of what will be one of the city’s largest retirement villages. www.ikonarchitects.co.nz

THE CITY’S
The team at Home Trends Builders is keeping its sunglasses handy and polished as the future keeps getting brighter. Each project is something a little different, driven by coowners Peter and Elaine DeGouw’s enthusiasm for bringing inspirational, great-looking homes relevant to the Christchurch market, to fruition.
P
eter says the company focuses on building, “homes that will be iconic in the future”. They have just completed one such project in Naseby Street, where the original historic mansion, defeated by the earthquakes, has been replaced by two absolutely remarkable modern homes. The pair of houses are very different from the usual cookie-cutter architectural homes in Merivale. They incorporate natural materials including cedar, a lightweight
designer stone panel board exclusive to New Zealand Brick and Stone, Onyx concrete blocks, with black monolithic louvre blades that transcend two storeys. The overall effect is stunning, people are talking, and one of the homes is waiting patiently for its lucky new owners. Three Wai-iti Terrace sites host both single and two storey homes, some of which have sold before consent, illustrating Home Trends’ ability to anticipate the needs of the market.
Five entries will grace the New Zealand Master Builders House of the Year 2018 competition, including the front house at Naseby Street, Totara and Tui Street homes, plus multi-units at Prestons – a local category that Home Trends won last year. After 30 years, Peter knows what works and knows the special people that live here. You’ll still find him on site every day, monitoring the builds and making clients happy.

A Soft and muted pastels have sidled their way back into the home sphere recently, and they’re having a refreshing effect on these internal spaces.
lthough our hero pastel this season would have to be pink, there’s something in every shade when it comes to this style selection – from mauve to baby blue and everything in between. It’s the sweetest of looks and features in everything, from bedspreads to velvet chairs. But if you’re wanting
to tone down the ‘pretty’, pastel tones can be overlaid on shades of grey, black and white or contrasted against the light woods and crisp whites of Scandi design to stop it from overpowering. From mint greens to yellow sorbet, forgive us if you’re suddenly craving candy and icecream!

Jayline UL200 groundbreaking technology New Zealand’s most efficient ultra-low emission burner, Jayline’s UL200, is described as “groundbreaking technology” by Cliff Kinraid, owner of 4 Seasons BBQ SPA HEAT PATIO Christchurch.
D
esigned and engineered in Nelson, the UL200 meets Environment Canterbury’s strict Clean Air Zone regulations for solid fuel heaters and leads the pack at 79 percent efficiency. The secret to the fire’s efficiency is its dual chamber firebox and ‘downdraft’ technology. The top chamber is loaded with wood and lit like a traditional fire. Once the fire reaches a critical temperature, the opening which connects the top chamber to the flue automatically shuts, resulting in hot gases being drawn down into the bottom firebox where they combust in a unique ‘downwards flame’.
ULEBs - the future of home heating Cliff believes ULEBs are the future for cost effective, efficient home heating and says the UL200 is a gamechanger. “Unlike many other ULEBs available, the UL200 requires no power and its downdraft action is fully automatic, plus the unit is more compact than others on the market.” According to Cliff, the UL200 has excellent fuel economy, meaning less wood is used, and it produces much less ash than traditional wood fires, making ash disposal less frequent. 4 Seasons Sales Manager Michael Connolly sums up the UL200 as, “a great fire - the perfect size and well-priced,” and says orders having been coming in quickly. Like Cliff, he says that the UL200’s size is a huge selling point for customers. “It’s a smaller unit but with a greater heat output than most gas fires and heat pumps, making it the perfect solution for heating areas from 100-220 metres squared,” he explains. Jayline’s national sales manager Greg Walsh says that at $3999 including flue kit, the UL200 will allow Kiwis to continue their long-held affinity with wood heating in their homes. “At this price,” he says, “regardless of whether you you live in an area with the strict clear air rules of Canterbury or not, this is a great way to future proof your home heating needs.”
Come see the ULEB experts 4 Seasons 4 Seasons Christchurch recommends talking to the experts about your options when it comes to ultra-low emission burners. “ULEBs require a high level of expertise,” Cliff explains. “We are fully trained to be able to advise you and explain council rules surrounding wood burners.” 4 Seasons offers Easy Heat installation packages which include an obligation-
free quote plus site check, delivery and installation of the fire by an experienced installer. Michael says that 4 Seasons’ service moves quickly and that their deals offer competitive prices with no hidden costs. With a huge range, it’s a one-stop-shop for home heating. Learn more at jayline.co.nz

mellow e yellow By Kate Pierson
In the past, yellow has suffered from a bit of an image problem. But it seems interior designers have launched a full-blown PR campaign advocating for its acceptance into the colour hall of fame and public perception of this sunny shade is looking up.

O
nce treated as somewhat of an enigma, it’s now embraced as energetic but equally relaxing; an ally to homes that want to generate an authentic aura of warmth. The more dulcet tones perfectly offset a dependable grey or if you want to turn up the volume on yellow, even a spritely purple will make an impact when paired with this hue. Of course green, cream, white and black also make the cut as faithful companions to the colour. Capable of lifting the spirits, the challenge with yellow lies in striking
the right balance. If it is too heavily concentrated in one area, it can dominate and overwhelm the space. If you want to take a conservative approach to introducing this aesthetic, start with the accents in your space - curtains, lighting, cushions, throws and even rugs. A colour block feature wall is also an option but more of a commitment. Trawl Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration and take advantage of online tools that let you digitally experiment with your space so you can try yellow on for size before you make any final decisions.

beige BRINGING LIFE TO
By Melinda Collins

Beige has long been considered the nemesis of fun in the home sphere, with no more ability to bring life to a space than a teaspoon can. But in recent times it has been shaking off its ‘plain Jane’ vibes and introducing an exciting new aesthetic.

arm and welcoming, beige is one of those clever colour chameleons that can make the perfect pairing with almost any other colour. And, when it comes to mixing and matching with this shade shifter, the bigger the design risks, the bigger the potential payoff. Create a clean palette by incorporating white, go dark and moody with deep blues or charcoals, or go cool and classy by incorporating a range of beige tones, from light through to dark. When it comes to colour psychology, pair beige with soft and relaxing tones of muted green, dove greys and soft pinks to create a calm and restorative environment. Its earthy tones lend themselves to the use of organic materials, with indoor planting, woven artwork and ceramics making popular pairings. Spaces can be brought to life by adding texture through soft furnishings like wall hangings, sheepskins, wall rugs or furniture featuring organic materials. This colour trend pairs well with woven artwork and indoor planting helps add a lush element to the neutral palette.

a tribal approach By Melinda Collins

n fact, many of the trends that are creeping into these spaces in 2018 are related by virtue of their soft and earthy nature. And, although the modern tribal aesthetic most certainly meets this brief, its decorative elements enable you to create a rustic earthy vibe without losing any of its cool factor. Art, lighting, rugs, cushions and beaded decorative accessories are some of the key tools in your decorating arsenal, when it comes to achieving a luxurious tribal look. We’re increasingly striving to create authenticity and a respect for handcrafted elements within our interiors and the components of this tie in well with the modern tribal look, as do natural materials and vintage eclectic themes. For the commitment phobe, this means you can comfortably dip your toes in the tribal waters, without any kind of long term commitment. Just incorporate some cushions, a rug or some ornamental accessories and you’re on your way, though be warned, it may create some wanderlust for the more travel-inspired types out there!
In a fast-paced modern world, it’s not hard to see why one might yearn for a more laid-back, relaxing vibe when it comes to the home.

Sledging, Slating and Overstating This month I’ve got two very distinct and different matters on my mind. The first is an observation which I’ll elaborate on; the second is an action that I’m planning, so without pausing I’d like to share them. Most of you will be familiar with the term ‘sledging’. It’s found its place in the oncegentlemanly sport of cricket, however its reach goes well beyond the sporting arena. Essentially, it’s a tactic that you apply to another team – usually to the batsman – to put them off their game, destroy their confidence drop-by-drop (or should I say, insult-by-insult) and gain the upper hand. I’m not alone in thinking this is a slippery, yes, cowardly move, and usually undertaken in the shadows, in the hope that no one can see the provocateur in action. If it works, you might get a wicket, and in business, where sledging, slating and overstating often occur, you might get a ‘win’ or a perceived advantage. I imagine that’s the idea when another business brings this methodology to the fore. Knocking other businesses in your industry is as old as the hills. We’ve all done it, myself included, but the years have taught me it’s a
Now, onwards. April means business planning and I’m excited to take our teams through the exercise of reviewing their professional and personal goals and moving forward. Yes, forward. Not standing still or sliding back, forward. Let’s all do that. Run our own race, not knock others, embrace incremental improvements, give words of encouragement rather than divide and, finally, give thanks.
Kevin Roberts stated in 64 Shots: Leadership in a Crazy World that a business leader takes the enterprise from strategic to ballistic. So, if you are ever subjected to a case of business sledging, do what we do, hit that ball out of the park!

cheap, meaningless shot. So, it was enormously disappointing when I saw social media posts doing just that about a brand I’m deeply passionate about: our own, the gold brand. Our significant achievements, including having the No. 1 residential office in New Zealand for Harcourts and the No. 1 office in our fair city were being belittled by an office that had neither, despite their size. So incredibly unnecessary: it’s a hard road, made harder by people who should know better. And the moral is more than likely that those buying and selling, the public, care about their own agendas and not company politics. Normally I wouldn’t even mention this, but 24 years in business has made me less tolerant of the low blow.

hristchurch is commanding attention on the global stage for the creative reimagining of the commercial spaces within its central bounds, as our architectural visionaries take what was not so long ago a barren wasteland and fill it with architectural artistry. But it’s not just the richly developing commercial spaces which are shaping this dynamic new urban landscape. Taking up an even bigger slice of the city’s geographical pie, the residential market has become a playground of innovation, one with creativity, architectural ingenuity and ground-breaking design at its heart. With dynamic, contemporary designs now the mainstay of the residential sector, Christchurch is putting its best foot forward with an aesthetic which is as cool as it is clever. Not only are its designs aesthetically pleasing, but they are safer and stronger than ever before, utilising products and knowledge which have been developed on the basis of many years of research and development, by companies which are at the very top of their commercial game. We have brought you a sneak peak into just what we’re talking about in the pages ahead, with an outstanding Fendalton home on page 118, an eco-project making architectural waves in Sumner on page 119, a beachside beauty on page 120 and a clever Clearwater creation on page 122. Next issue we take it to the next level, covering some of the high profile NZIA Canterbury projects. So stay turned for more of the city’s architectural escapades to come.

hristchurch has been presented with a unique opportunity to redevelop itself. While that comes with a price tag, we should ensure we deliver an experience and standard of living that reflects the fact that we are New Zealand’s second largest city. We need to create a city that attracts the best talent and businesses who will invest and contribute to our economy; a city that draws visitors from across the world to experience end explore our unique offering; and a city that provides its residents with rich cultural, social, sporting and commercial activity. We’re starting to see businesses base themselves here in Christchurch – let’s make it easy for them to succeed, enable them to achieve the very best outcomes they can and attract and keep the talent they need to succeed. One such business said recently, “Christchurch really stood out when we were evaluating locations as it not only met all of our requirements, but had the added bonus of a thriving and collaborative technology and startup community… It’s inspiring to see the amazing transformation that the city is undertaking and it is obvious that Christchurch is a city on the rise.” Let’s make sure we deliver on these expectations and start talking about what we expect from the second largest city in New Zealand. We’ll need to be creative about how we pay for the new city and prioritise the things most likely to deliver the positive experience for residents, businesses and visitors. But let’s make sure we have the discussion. We can’t afford not to.
T
he success of the recent Lantern Festival has given Christchurch the first real taste of what a spectacular stage Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct can be for this city. Thousands of people made their way along parts of the riverside promenade to find a vantage point on the steps of the Terraces or Worcester East punt stop. It was great to see this new space embraced in such a way. It is easy to go past the remaining sections of the Avon River Precinct that are currently under construction and mistake them for roadworks. However, this project will see the riverside promenade stretch some two kilometres from the Hospital to the Margaret Mahy Family Playground when completed at the end of the year. While the Avon River Precinct will bring more greenery to the central city and create an entirely new way to move across it, more importantly it is a catalyst for private development along the river. Leading the charge of course, have been the hospitality ventures between Hereford and Cashel Street. We’ve also seen an impressive restoration of the former Café Roma building and the Public Trust building will follow suit. The Re:Start Mall site is also now making way for the start of works on the Riverside Farmers Market. With Avon River Precinct works underway on the riverbanks between Victoria Square and the playground more opportunities will open up. So, thanks to ChristchurchNZ and all those who attended the Lantern Festival for reminding us of the potential that lies along the river.
I
f you own, manage or occupy a building that’s a workplace, you should be up to speed with some regulations that will affect you. On Wednesday 4 April, 2018, important sections of the Health & Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations came in to force. There has been a two-year grace period to get organised and the deadline is now here. What does this mean for you? In short, if you know (or ought to know!) that asbestos is likely to be present in your building, you need to be actively managing it. You should be well on your way to preparing an Asbestos Management Plan by now. This important document outlines where asbestos is and how it will be managed. It must include information about the location, how you will manage associated risks, what procedures you’ll follow if you need to disturb it, how you record incidents and emergencies relating to it and a timetable for activities, such as regular reviews. Anyone undertaking maintenance or repairs in your workplace should be asking for a copy of your Asbestos Management Plan, prior to commencing works, to ensure they don’t expose themselves or others to asbestos. WorkSafe has produced some great guidance on the new requirements. Check out their website for more information. Ignorance will no longer be accepted as an excuse for not actively managing New Zealand’s number one workplace killer: asbestos exposure. Be proactive and don’t get caught out.

n mid-March, our organisation Regenerate Christchurch published some recently taken drone images of the Bexley Wetland and Southshore Spit on social media, and the photos generated a large amount of positive engagement with our online audiences. The positive feedback we received – and continue to receive – reflects the importance that the areas of the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor and the Avon Heathcote estuary holds to so many people. This space is a valuable resource for the community, not just from an ecological point of view, but also for its potential to be an incredible place for bold ideas and innovation to be showcased both for Cantabrians and greater New Zealand. We’re excited about the potential the area has to become a world-leading living laboratory, where we learn, experiment and research, test, and create new ideas and ways of living, such as how we adapt to sea-level rise and climate change. Meanwhile, on back-to-back weekends in March, the Children’s Day and Polyfest events were held in the former residential red zones on the corner of New Brighton Road and Locksley Avenue. Both days transformed the ‘Regeneration Area’ into a thriving, bustling carnival-like atmosphere as crowds of happy people enjoyed great music, performances, food, activities and games. These events, and other transitional uses of the 602-hectare Regeneration Area from Barbadoes Street to the Bexley Wetland, provide a glimpse into how the area can provide immense benefit to Christchurch and New Zealand in the future. There are some very exciting times ahead.
M
en’s behaviour towards women is, quite rightly, under scrutiny. The message is clear. Men need to understand respect. Having worked in schools for 35 years, I am convinced the key challenge we face is to help our young men grow emotional confidence. Emotional confidence – and associated self-awareness and empathy – is a core strength for men and demands a subtle rethinking of our view of masculinity and its expression. By growing emotional confidence in our boys, we can help them navigate the complexity of life in a more honest and constructive way, bringing out their best and the best in others. In my experience at Christ’s College, I sense the boys themselves are ready for a different level of conversation about “being a man” in the 21st century – young men being confident in who they are. As educators, our role is not simply about academic achievement. We need to support our young men to understand and develop character strengths, to live by virtues such as respect, honesty, loyalty, integrity, compassion and manners. I believe we should challenge what it means to be a New Zealand male – and help our young men grow in the areas in which Kiwi men have not traditionally been so strong. There are a lot of confusing messages about masculinity on the Internet and in social media. We need to make sure our young men have healthy and positive role models, so they are good men who respect women.
A
s we head in to the 8th year since the earthquakes, Canterbury has so much to be proud of. Hundreds of thousands of homes have been repaired, large swaths of our city have been rebuilt and some truly amazing new public spaces have been created. For most people, the trauma of the earthquakes has passed, their homes have been repaired or rebuilt and life has returned to a “new normal.” A recent wellbeing survey by the DHB shows that for most people, wellbeing levels have returned to what they were before the earthquakes. For too many people though, this progress has been elusive – for the just over two and a half thousand people still waiting for their EQC claim to be settled, life cannot move on. What’s even more frustrating for people is that almost all of these outstanding repairs are remedial repairs – cases where work has already been done but has had to be re-repaired because of issues or faulty work. Getting progress for these people is a key priority for me as Minister – we cannot be said to have truly recovered from the earthquake until every Cantabrian can move on with their lives and have hope in their future. That’s why I’ve appointed an independent Ministerial Advisor to work with EQC’s board and management on a plan to urgently resolve these outstanding claims and get progress for these people at last. Seven years is too long to wait, it’s time these people were finally able to move on.

Once home to an auto electrician, it has also been used as a woodworking business and a plumber at other times, Richard says. The building is “built to handle stuff ”, which helps when it comes to hosting everything from live gigs to indoor skateboarding and talks. Camia Young looked at more than 100 buildings before coming across the future home of XCHC, which launched in 2014 as a creative hub offering space to foster connectedness and collaboration between artists. “We needed somewhere that would attract the public and we also needed somewhere that artists would be attracted to.” An architect by training, Camia says she tends to see buildings and consider future use and the psychology of space. As well as practical requirements such as a large open space with the right number of exits and a certain structural code, she was looking for something that felt a bit edgy and would “draw people in”. The building she settled on has previously housed a panel beater, an industrial paint factory and a pickle

Its owner, Thomas Newfield, says the north-facing beauty was exactly what he was looking for. “Industrial buildings and sites are becoming the new playgrounds for urban dwellers,” he says. “This creative approach to urban regeneration has been copied across most major cosmopolitan cities around the globe and with the current landscape in Christchurch, it was so refreshing to find such a gem.” The owners of popular Sydenham café Hello Sunday are opening a restaurant directly opposite the café and in doing so are giving a “cool post-industrial building a new, fun life”. Known as 5th Street, it’s due to open in mid-April and owned by Jonathan Spark, Chris Penny, Yasmeen Clark, Sam Stewart and Max Perry. Jonathan says he and other Hello Sunday owners were invited to consider several options for a new venture, but none fitted – until their neighbour mentioned he was vacating his building. “We immediately saw its potential under its heavily industrialised interior,” Jonathan says. There were multiple construction companies dealing with complicated strengthening and restoration. If there was another earthquake, I would go to The Arts Centre to be safe.
What was it like having the freedom to observe the restoration through your lens rather than being told specifically what to photograph? The freedom allowed me to be expressive. It allowed me to discover images. It was unique as an opportunity and I was very fortunate to be part of it.
Did you learn some interesting stories about the buildings or tenants who used to occupy them? The Arts Centre is full of stories of what people used to do there. The stories I was most interested in were those told by what was left behind in the spaces immediately after the earthquakes.
A lot of the images displayed in your exhibition at Pūmanawa earlier this year were black and white – what was the reason behind that? Black and white imagery has a simplicity that is very much about using light to tell a story without the complications of colour. Actually, my biggest bugbear was orange cones.
What were some of the challenges of shooting photographs on an active worksite? Being aware of health and safety was the main one. There was dust everywhere and changing lenses was always a concern. Working in this environment is all about respect. It was important that I had as little impact as possible on the imagery aside from being the observer.
Do you think the public understands the amount of work going into the restoration at The Arts Centre? I would be surprised if many people had a full idea of what’s really involved. It is a huge project made up of many parts with many experts bringing everything together. There were unique skills like lead working and heritage masonry work, combined with modern engineering technology.
Did you gain an understanding of the stonemasons’ craft? To understand stonemasonry, you need to wield the tools. You need to strike the stone with chisels. You need to cut, lift, sweat and breathe in the dust – through a mask, of course. I saw what they did and was aware of the care they took but it would take a lot more to understand stonemasonry.

FENCING SOLUTIONS
When it comes to fencing, there are choices about heights, colours and materials. Whether you choose panel, wood, glass or metal, the number of individual looks and styles is huge – and that’s after you consider whether you want a vertical or horizonal look.
N
o two days are the same for Rock Solid Fencing, a company with more than 15 years’ experience based in North Canterbury, working throughout the Canterbury region. Each material has its own benefits; glass makes a great barrier without blocking any visuals; colour panel is very contemporary and can be matched to most colour steel roof colours; traditional pool fencing is no longer just for pools
– it can be used to take advantage of a vista like a river or park at the edge of a property; and by choosing something that is not the standard black, you can create a unique look, such as white tubular, which offers a cutting-edge contemporary style. Older pillar style fences can be modernised by reviving the fence panels between, capitalising on a base that is already there. Fencing can also provide solutions in areas not normally considered.

“When seeking geotechnical consultancy services, you should satisfy yourself that the engineer is appropriately qualified and experienced,” says Mason Reed of Fraser Thomas Limited. “The Chartered Engineer register on the Engineering NZ website can confirm whether an engineer is Chartered and in which field (ie. structural, fire, civil). If you take advice on geotechnical matters from an engineer who is not a chartered professional (geotechnical) engineer, you do so at your own risk.” Fraser Thomas has been providing expert geotechnical consultancy services for 50 years. “We have a sound understanding of geomechanics and provide foundation solutions which are best suited for the site conditions, which can sometimes result in significant cost savings for our clients in foundation construction costs.” Fraser Thomas has a long history in identifying and mitigating the effects of a variety of geotechnical hazards ranging from residential and commercial to large infrastructure projects, such as landfills. “We have particular experience in slope stability assessments, including cliff lines/ coastal erosion affects, foundation design on soft highly compressible soils, piled foundation design and the provision of foundation solutions for sites on liquefiable soils.” In a shaky land, it is vital work.

A PRECISE
RELEVELLING PROJECT
When Linda Horan and Jim Mitchell moved to their new home in Woolston in 2004, they intended to stay there for life. It was shiny and new, and closer to work and family.
L AFTER
JIM AND LINDA WERE BACK IN THEIR HOME AFTER ONLY 12 WEEKS
ike so many however, they experienced significant disruption in the earthquakes and thus began a long process to find resolution. They considered several options but wanted to stay in Woolston. The house had sunk 100mm and suffered serious cracks in the foundation slab. They had plans drawn up for a rebuild. Then they contacted Precision Solutions, a foundation and floor relevelling specialist which had done some work for Linda’s niece, who had been thoroughly impressed. Precision Solutions put together a plan to repair Jim and Linda’s house, simpler, less expensive and quicker than the proposed rebuild. The plan was to lift the house back to where it should be. Simple. “Fundamentally,” says Precision Solutions Contract Manager, Charles Porter, “It’s quite a simple process.
Physically however, it’s a bit more complicated.” The whole lifting and relevelling process took three weeks. Most of the time was spent in preparation, clearing the house, digging underpinning holes and pouring lifting pads. The house was then lifted and levelled, millimetres at a time. After some other renovations, Jim and Linda were back in their home after only 12 weeks. “We’re so happy with it,” Linda says. “Precision’s people were very thorough. They worked every day. They were never late and, what they said they’d do, they did. Sometimes they stayed late to finish what they were doing. We were very impressed with their attitude, and their price was $18,000 cheaper than another reputable competitor.”
Do you have any concerns about the state of your foundation and floor levels? At Precision Solutions, we are industry experts in house relevelling specialising in concrete slabs. As a result of the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence we have developed a unique and precise solution to raise, re-level and repair your home to millimeter accuracy. We focus on putting your needs first.

n fact, when it comes to projects, this is one in the developmental spotlight – both in the figurative and literal sense of the expression – with the urban green space home to Australasia’s first illuminated electric fountain, the Bowker Fountain. The 13-month restoration project was delivered by Ōtākaro Limited on behalf of the Crown, in collaboration with Christchurch City Council and Matapopore on behalf of Ngāi Tūāhuriri/Ngāi Tahu. “The Canterbury earthquakes left Victoria Square in a poor condition, with uneven paved surfaces creating ponding areas, trip hazards and subsidence issues in this popular public space,” Ōtākaro Chief Executive Albert Brantley says. “By replacing the 170,000 pavers and installing around three kilometres of new underground pipe and cabling for upgraded irrigation, drainage and lighting, Victoria Square’s lifespan has been extended for decades and it is safer and more accessible.” A new punt stop opposite the Town Hall will enable people to make greater use of the Avon River and Victoria Square will now tie in with the river promenade currently under construction. The restoration of Victoria Square and the repair and upgrading of the adjoining sections of Colombo Street and Armagh Street has cost around $12.7m. The roadworks will be finished in May.

HEROES UNSUNG CONSTRUCTION
We’re a global leader when it comes to women’s rights, since 1893 when we became the first country to give women the right to vote. And yet, despite making up more than half of New Zealand’s population, women currently comprise just 17 percent of the nation’s construction industry.
R
egistered Master Builders Association (MBA) Chief Executive David Kelly describes women as the ‘unsung heroes’ of the construction industry. “Women form the backbone of the building industry,” he says. “Women are heavily involved in many of our member’s businesses. Often a woman runs the business so her partner can focus on the tools and this role is just as important as the physical construction side. Many successful building businesses are based on this partnership model.” The RMBA has had a number of female regional Presidents, including two currently who were elected by their peers within the industry to represent them. RMBA West Coast President Linda Caldana runs a family construction business alongside her husband Robert. A qualified draftsperson and learning assessor, she oversees her team’s 116 April 12, 2018 Metropol
recruitment and training, and says that although a lot has changed for women during her 35 years in the industry, women are still not getting the recognition they deserve. “It’s about getting the best person for the job and women have a significant role to play,” she says. “Clients still ring and want to talk to my husband on a daily basis, when, in fact they need to talk to me.” RMBA Ashburton President Andrea Lee says it is important there is mutual respect for the roles women and men play. “Women bring huge strength and a whole different process to the industry. On the business side, it is the behind-the-scenes efforts of women who makes businesses thrive,” she says. “Women are often amazing project managers and designers. They are excellent at client management, financial
management, and considering how a home will function best for a family – they make a house a home.” More than 65,000 construction workers are needed over the next five years to keep up with demand and women are increasingly picking up the tools. Blenheim-based builder Olivia Ward encourages other women to consider stepping out of the office. “There’s a huge shortage of builders and especially women builders and I’d like to encourage other women to get into the trades,” she says. “Women can do just as good a job as men – if not better!” Dennis Taylor, Head of Department for Trades at Ara wants to see New Zealand industries continue to encourage women to study and work in the trades, by ensuring they know they are valued workers. “We have seen the range of industries that we engage with actively breaking down the historical barriers to women working in their sector and those industries recognise the benefits associated with the skills, knowledge and diversity that women bring to the workplace,” Dennis says.

DREAM IT
Creating places with punch By Cheryl Colley
As our new city starts to develop and people slowly make their way back into the central city, it will be interesting to see where the winners and the losers of the social scene will be. We don’t hand it over to someone else to implement and risk compromising the original concept.” Dean’s imagination is seemingly limitless and not always conventional. “I once designed an in-home movie theatre in the form of a submarine wreckage ‘submerged’ in three-dimensional faux rocks with dramatic effects that can be preprogrammed and controlled.” It’s this calibre of ability that has made Dean sought after in New Zealand, Australia and even the United States. We took architectural designer John Ayers’ floor plans and added the character and identity. Fat Eddies is a ‘blues’ bar reflecting America in the 1930s and 40s; Kong is an art-deco styled cocktail bar reminiscent of a 1930s movie set where you wouldn’t be surprised to see Humphrey Bogart; Original Sin on the other hand takes those two words and plays on them with ecclesiastical architecture – a serpent, an apple and an Adam and Eve themed mural painted on carved concrete to resemble an old cracked oil painting. These bars were the first on the new ‘strip’ and have set a high standard. Unafraid of tricky building sites, Hybrid Homes has built a new thermally broken, zero-energy showhome. “Power and rain water collection systems combined with building techniques that maximise efficiency allows us to run this home at zero energy cost,” says Hybrid Homes Director Jamie Harrington, who has been designing and building eco homes for more than ten years.
T
he company has also designed a series of customisable ‘ekohomes’ to make owning a sustainable home more affordable, but this double living, four-bedroom plus study abode on Sumner’s Richmond Hill Road is a top level architectural showcase of expertise and techniques. Smooth contemporary concrete floors are softened with a natural textured mat defining the dining area. The spacious kitchen has wooden accents, stunning hexagonal tiles and clever hidden lighting that brings everything to life. The tap is a nickel finished ‘Elisa Sink Mixer’ by Waterware and supplied by Edward Gibbon. “We love working with Hybrid Homes. They choose great products from our most innovative ranges,” David Walker-
Rogers of Edward Gibbon says. “All of the tapware is eco-friendly – reducing volume but not pressure.” The eye-catching Waterware ‘Istone Basin’ in the bathroom is a black rimmed oval number, paired with ‘Modern Linear’ basin mixers atop a wooden vanity unit. The luxurious double shower head is a ‘Nova Shower Tower’. The dark glossfinish tiles in the bathroom play with the light from the marble look tiles that line the rest of the walls. It is a glam, modern environment. On the exterior, the contrast of white plaster with black aluminium joinery is pleasing to the eye, as is the clever use of lines: the diagonal roofline with that of the rail for the steps and, while sitting around the firepit, the straight lines of the seating
area with the dramatic square lines of that side of the house. The sunken firepit feels holiday spot-esk, the simple decision to use stones underfoot shows Hybrid Homes know how to get the vibes right. Once your eyes have lingered on the detail you can catch a view of the ocean. Open the first Saturday of the month 11am-2pm or by appointment for a private tour of the multitude of features and options available for your new home. Visit www.hybridhomes.co.nz.

MC ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO
ARCHITECTURAL ARTISTRY By Rhonda Mitchell
“I do truly believe in the importance of design – we sometimes underestimate the power of it,” says Max Capocaccia of MC Architecture Studio.
F
ortunately, the judges at the 2017 World Architecture News Awards thoroughly understood the power of Max’s Black Door House’s design, awarding it first prize in the ‘Best Modern Method of Construction’ category, with

the comment it “stands as an object of art overlooking the ocean”. For Max, Black Door House was a favourite project long before it won an international award. It was christened when the original door was reshaped to
incorporate the surrounding wall into its form. The door is of course black and towers at 2.9m tall, but it sits within a wall that echoes its geometric design. The curved entrance mirrors the sweep of Pegasus Bay from Whitewash Heads to

Like an aeroplane wing, its upswept roof provides lift and thrust to the house, relating it to surrounding hills and valleys, reflecting the mountains across the bay and plains. Constructed with a combination of timber frame, complex steel structure, and Structural Insulated Panels (SIP) supplied by MagRoc, the SIP system is a key component of the extraordinary thermal performance of the house. Rather than simply installing insulation between gaps in the framing leaving up to 20 percent of the walls and roof uninsulated, the SIP system insulates and clads the entirety of each wall. MagRoc SIP homes have been tested down to 0.51 air changes per hour, in contrast to the standard 4.5 to 19 air changes per hour. The magnesium oxide internal panels provide additional thermal mass, absorbing excess heat during warmer times and releasing that heat when the ambient air temperature drops,
maintaining more consistent internal temperatures. The entrance of Black Door House is Max’s favourite, high ceilinged, the view unfolds just a few steps into the house. Glassforce created the glass and balustrade systems. A close relationship with MC Architecture is due to mutual unique design abilities, which found their first iteration in a loft home in Lyttelton where they designed, engineered, manufactured and installed a timber and glass sound reducing feature window that occupies the front wall. Glassforce invented, patented, and trademarked a stunning glass system called Davantech, which requires zero mechanical fixing. Seismically superior, there is no point load so it is safe and easy to install. Both MC Architecture and Glassforce have offices in Italy, and together introduced the technologies invented in Christchurch. They are acclaimed there, as well as in Australia,
America and the rest of Europe. When choosing Warmth.nz underfloor heating, both the architect and builder knew the client would be thrilled, not only now, but well into the future and there is special satisfaction for the company knowing it had not relied on an expensive system to win the award. Warmth.nz advises anyone building a new home that they can put luxurious underfloor heating in it for only $100 per square metre. The economical installation cost plus the future ability to extend or add to the system means the home is set up for future additions and the homeowner will live in the ultimate in luxury warmth every winter. The company provides exemplar systems with low running costs for luxurious home heating right from the outset through the installation of in-floor piping when the foundations are poured. Once installed, the benefits are reaped with the total capital and running cost. While Max’s design stood out amongst the world’s best, he modestly assumed he wouldn’t win, sending a Londonbased colleague to the Gala Ceremony in London in his place. Max’s team replicates his approach: they must be “people who are open to the challenge of pushing boundaries but at the same time keep their feet on the ground”. New technologies are a passion, but the aptitude for variety and the ability to accomplish a simple or traditional request is central to the practice. Metropol April 12, 2018 121

PHIL BENTON BUILDERS
Clearwater’s
CLEVER CONSTRUCTION By Allison O’Neill
The second priciest street in Christchurch is Mayfly Lane at Clearwater, where the lake frontages make you feel a hundred miles from anywhere. Phil Benton Builders has just completed number ten. The angular street frontage is dramatic. The vast roof is sharp, while the not often seen Bluestone cladding mesmerises with its patterns.
“T
he weight of the stone was significant and it was a first for us to use Bluestone as an exterior cladding,” Dave Fraser of Phil Benton Builders says. The construction method was untypical. “It is a residential house, yet we used commercial building techniques to create it,” Dave says. “We erected all the structural steel first, put the roof on, then installed the membrane roofing before working on the framing beneath.” “It is a unique house,” says Mark Allworthy from Bates Joinery, which completed the interior joinery. “The products and finishes are quite different to what is commonly used right now. The heart rimu veneer was widely used in the 80s until American White Oak took over. A challenge on this build was the rimu veneer coming only in sheet lengths of 2.4m but we had ceiling heights of 3.6m, so there was a lot of grain matching to do to get the finish perfect.” The entrance way is a favourite feature.
“It is quite spectacular with the vertical fins in the den, though the room separator door for the media room is also very cool. We do a lot of work for Phil Benton Builders, they are a great team.” Designed by Heather Blewett of Context Architects, the brief was to create a contemporary yet grand home with flexible living options. “Whilst the clients loved the site at Clearwater, they wanted something that looked different,” Heather says. The clients were not keen on the golf resort’s signature ‘white gabled’ house and, with Clearwater’s strict design rules and the need to be sympathetic to existing homes, it proved architecturally challenging. But Heather is very pleased with the finished product. “Phil Benton Builders have taken great care crafting the home, and the overall quality of the build is extremely high – they went the extra mile to deliver solutions that worked.” “We had site meetings with Context every two weeks and they were always available to provide extra details or
