ears may not be what you’d expect from one of the city’s most covetable fashion shows. But when the benefactor of the event is a worthy charitable cause such as Ronald McDonald House South Island, which has supported the likes of Paula and Alex Moore, it’s not surprising there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. When their daughter Grace was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour, the Moore family – including Grace’s twin sister Sophie and younger brother Beau – spent 133 nights at Ronald McDonald House. The annual M Factor Fashion Show is one of the organisation’s primary fundraising drives each year, which enables it to continue the tireless crusade to support families when they need it the most. More than $65,000 was raised for the charity on the night at this year’s event. It’s an event that organiser Maree Lucas from M Factor Events puts heart and soul into. She was joined on stage for the opening address by her twin nieces. Born prematurely, one with a hole in her heart, they spent time at Starship and her family stayed at Ronald McDonald House to be close to them while they underwent treatment. It was a special night for a special cause and Metropol would like to personally thank all of the incredible people that supported this event in some way, shape or form. We look at the charity’s next major fundraiser on page 10. Enjoy.

he name Oriana is a nod to Queen Elizabeth I. “Oriana was a kind of nickname for her; it was slipped into many poems and compositions at the time,” explains Dublin born Harry. “And we do that, too,” adds Amelia, brainchild and founder of Oriana, “At the end of each performance, we sing ‘Long Live Fair Oriana!’” Their debut concert was Christmas 2017 at Avebury House, while 2018 has seen Oriana sing the Easter Vigil at St Michael and All Angels, and a lunchtime concert at St Mary’s Pro Cathedral on 18 April. Coming up are 2pm concerts at Knox Church, 10 June, and The Piano, 19 August. Kimberley says that Oriana’s choral pieces and madrigals are filling a gap in the market; Harry nods in agreement. “Auckland and Wellington have these groups but Christchurch, post-quakes, had nothing; now we can provide that high standard, quality music.” Amelia says the friendship they have outside of performing is important. “Our connection with each other makes for a good connection with our audiences.” Oriana also does private functions. “Corporate events, engagements, weddings, birthdays, whatever’s wanted, we’ll do it,” Matthew says. “And we happily do modern, and can go unscripted,” he adds, with a not quite cherubic smile. For more information email orianaensemble@gmail.com or find Oriana on Facebook.

some of the city’s most worthy causes. Pay It Forward, with the charity Dress for Success, will have a clothing donation booth on site. Dress for Success invites attendees, and those unable to attend, to gift a ‘buddy ticket’, to enable a disadvantaged woman to attend, while In the Community Charitable Trust creates opportunities to do something special for mums with breast cancer. Christine Korako and former Silver Ferns player and Motivationz Director Marg Foster are the names behind Inspired Events NZ. Established to inspire and motivate others, they believe investing in personal and professional development enhances individual and group motivation, leading to greater success and happiness. “It’s all about connecting engaging and participating,” Christine says. “We flourish when we have the right people around us who can advise us, support and strengthen our individual capability, grow our confidence and challenge us to reach our goals. “People with a positive mindset are irresistible and that is why we came together to create Inspired Events. We unpack layers of motivation and inspiration through speakers and workshops to create a point of difference in people’s lives.” For more information and tickets, email inspireatevents@gmail.com or follow @ inspiredevents on Facebook.

Mike Kin Mission Popular New Zealand personality Mike King may have made his name as a comedian, but these day’s you’ll find him delivering a much more serious message. He’s been heading up and down the country – a 4000km journey – on a 50cc scooter for the past five years, addressing youth suicide. We talk to the mental health advocate about his personal mission for this very worthy cause.

ng’s n
one on one How big is the youth suicide issue in New Zealand? How long is a piece of string? The issue of suicide across the board is big and how we’re dealing with it needs addressing. Currently those in crisis have to ring ‘this number’ or see ‘this person’. Everything is aimed at the person in crisis; nothing is aimed at the 65/70 percent of the population who have no problems. People hold onto problems for so long and they’re only being referred when they’re at critical point. We’re trying to promote the fact that it’s ok to talk about small problems before they become big ones and someone becomes suicidal. You’ve been making your way around the country on 50cc Suzukis to raise awareness, why is it such an important issue for you to tackle? In February 2013 I spoke at a small rural school in Northland which had lost five children to suicide. I have discovered through this experience that our young people don’t feel like us old people are listening to them. So we went around schools listening, listening, listening. We discovered that all kids, regardless of religion or colour, have the same problems and they’re not talking about them; they’re holding onto them until they become overwhelming. Their inner critics, the little voice second guessing all their decisions, are huge. From there we worked out a strategy – help the inner critic; he’s the cornerstone of 9 out of 10 of the mental health problems. We need to normalise the inner critics by changing society’s attitudes. Last year we discovered that of those who will have a major mental health problem, 80 percent won’t ask for help. They don’t feel safe. The simplest thing we could do is come up with a signifier of someone safe. We created a simple wristband with ‘I am hope’ on it. This says: I won’t judge, shame,
gossip, ask stupid questions, try and fix everything for you; all you’ll get from me is unconditional love and hope, but most importantly, if you want to talk to someone, I am here. What are some of the key ways New Zealand can start to make some ground in this area? Parents need to know that all kids are born perfect. The only thing that can screw them up is us. We apply all these rules and only give conditional love – if you do this or that, pass this test, then I’ll love you. We can understand the logic of that, because we’re adults, but kids are thinking there must be something wrong with them if they’re not getting unconditional love. If there’s five things they do, four are good and one is bad, we focus on the bad, what we think we’re saying is ‘we love you, but you can do better’, but what our kids are getting is ‘no matter what I do I can never be good enough’. How we’re speaking to our children becomes an inner voice. These become little criticisms that mean nothing in isolation, ‘yes you’re an idiot I asked for a screwdriver you bought be a spoon’. But that’s one hell of an inner critic we’re planting in our kids’ heads. How does it feel to be in a position where you can play such a positive role in raising awareness of issues such as this? It’s a privileged position. We have to be very responsible; people are placing a lot of trust on our shoulders. We don’t take or accept government funding; we’re funded by the public of New Zealand. A lot of organisations out there take government money and public money. That’s like having a wife and girlfriend; you have to lie to please both. We only take public donations and apply for grants, so the public will let us know when we’re out of a job; it keeps you honest. It’s a cool position to be in.

o it’s more important than ever for businesses to be creative and highly strategic in how they market themselves and communicate with the people that matter to them. That’s where the team at Priority Communications comes in. This talented crew are experts in creating engaging content and helping organisations communicate at their very best with customers, staff and others. “Often businesses don’t have the budget to have an in-house public relations team. We’ll work with them to create a marketing communications strategy and then assist them to put it in place,” Priority Communications Director Michele Hider says. “Several of our clients see us as an extension of their team, asking us to look after everything from their website and social media presence to engaging with media, producing their marketing material and supporting them with crisis communications. “Others have us on board for one-off campaigns or distinct pieces of work such as writing their annual report, developing a new website or microsite, organising an event, or liaising with the media over a special issue.” The Priority Comms team are a friendly, down-to-earth bunch, who are just as comfortable meeting clients at home or on a farm, as in a corporate setting. Between them they have backgrounds and qualifications in public relations, journalism, broadcasting and community relations. They work alongside local, wellrespected partners for graphic design, web development, photography and videography. “The first impression people have of your business stems from your marketing and communications, so it is important to do it well,” Michele says. “We get enormous satisfaction out of watching our clients grow and thrive.”

he style of TT reminded me of a great mid-west bar and restaurant. Straying far from the standard restaurant fare, the menu features the likes of crayfish ravioli, Kaikoura octopus, crispy zucchini, Wakanui beef short rib and truffle fries. The Dux Deluxe brought fresh vegetarian food to Christchurch, but the TT has extended its range of vegetarian and fish to include meat. “That was then, this is now,” Richard says. “We don’t want to exclude anyone now. Even though Lisa and I are vegetarian, we want to provide an all round great place to eat.” BBQ Chef extraordinaire Tristan Anderson is creating something pretty special in the kitchen with ‘Beatrice’, the real wood BBQ which uses pure oak. “We’re keeping it real in the kitchen and bringing fire to the food with a great range of fresh steak and meat options every day. I’m always looking for opportunities to challenge the customers but keep them happy.” ‘South Pacific bistro, from the sea, plains and alps. It’s local food with a twist’, the menu states. With the true BBQ flavour Beatrice brings and the team’s eye for food, beverage and service, it’s so good to see some heart retuning to such an iconic area of the Garden City. The Sinke family have added a “Barsterant” – their word not mine – to the central city’s ‘must-trys’.

Take Portfolio Investment Entities (PIE) and KiwiSaver, taxed at a discounted rate determined by your income band. People nominate the tax rate at the outset: if you set your tax rate too high and pay too much, you won’t get the excess tax back; set the rate too low and you have to include your PIE or KiwiSaver income in your tax return – you’ll be taxed in your income band and lose the discounted rate. “A rate set too high or too low sees you penalised. It is quite a prevalent problem,” Jason says.
“People are often paying more tax than they need.”

exceptional customer service and innovative design ideas. Over the last 20 years, Metropol has been an integral part of our marketing and helped us achieve the success and recognition we still enjoy. Clients have come into our showroom holding an image from the latest issue, wanting to replicate what they see in the ‘home’ section – so that is the best advertising result possible. It has been a delight to work with Jeanne and the Metropol team all these years. Congratulations on your 20th anniversary.
We have been advertising in Metropol for around three years now and we feel we get tremendous mileage from our association with the magazine. Mamma Mia’s Ashburton Debut
More than 54 million people around the world have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make Mamma Mia! And, in May 2018, it will be performed for a limited season at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, with a stellar cast, live band, amazing custom-made touring set and costumes.
he Ashburton Trust Event Centre was born out of the necessity to replace the aged Regent Theatre that had occupied the site for many years and was in very bad repair. “It would not have survived the Christchurch earthquakes had it still been standing,” Ashburton Events Centre Manager Roger Farr says. “The brickwork was crumbling, the dressing rooms leaked like a sieve and there were broken trusses in the roof.” Now ten years on, the Ashburton Trust Event Centre is gearing up to celebrate its first milestone by staging the box office extravaganza Mamma Mia. Leading the production team will be Director Roger Farr, Musical Director Richard Marrett and Choreographer Madison Tew Keyworth from Australia. “I couldn’t think of a better show to pick for a celebration than Mamma Mia,” Madison says. “It’s such a fun show; one of those shows that you just cannot help but smile when watching! It’s a clever storyline woven throughout Abba’s greatest hits.” Mamma Mia runs from Friday 18 May to Saturday 26 May. For more information and to purchase tickets, drop in and see the team at the Event Centre, or visit online at www.ateventcentre.co.nz.

Medbury School IAN MACPHERSON HEADMASTER
While Medbury School enjoys a strong reputation as a progressive preparatory school for boys locally, nationally and internationally, the School has, at its core, an engaging family feel, which extends within and beyond the school gate. Traditional Christian values, supported by a strong emphasis on manners and respect, underpin the School’s mission ‘to unlock the potential of every boy’. It was this unique blend of Medbury’s long history of educational achievement, community engagement and its focus on core values that most appealed to Ian Macpherson as he accepted the position as Headmaster of Medbury School for the commencement of the 2018 academic year.
edbury School has successfully balanced the strong traditions established throughout the past 95 years, with innovation in teaching and learning, as it strives to be one of Australasia’s leading preparatory schools,” Mr Macpherson says. “I am looking forward to building on Medbury’s firm foundations of commitment to excellence and living the twelve Medbury values in both thoughts and deeds, as the school prepares to celebrate its centenary in 2023.” With almost 30 years as a specialist in boys’ education, he has seen first-hand the difference a boy-friendly approach has on maximising academic engagement, as well as social and emotional development. “A boy with values is a boy set for life. The School motto, Play the Game, reinforces the standard for all student behavior and attitudes, whether in the classroom, on the playing field, in social interaction and activities, or beyond the school gates. “Helping boys master skills, which help them tackle greater obstacles and ask more ‘why’ questions, drives our curriculum development and implementation programmes. We also value the learning opportunities that take place beyond the classroom and Medbury boys are blessed to be extended in so many ways.” The School’s Boarding House is an integral part of school life and home to 43 boarders from different areas of New Zealand and overseas. Medbury boys are challenged in a supportive way, which adds to their resolve and resilience, and provides a long and successful list of traits from which they can draw upon. “When a Medbury boy leaves for secondary school, he does so with an education equipping him for life in the 21st century. He will leave us a well-rounded individual; a motivated and independent learner and a critical thinker with high self-esteem, who reacts to others and the changing world around him, with confidence and good grace.”

St Margaret’s College GILLIAN SIMPSON PRINCIPAL
‘Everyday Superstars’ is the theme chosen for the St Margaret’s community for 2018 by our Year 13 cohort. For true wellbeing we all need to be a vital part of something bigger than ourselves and to feel needed and valued. The girls define an ‘everyday superstar’ as someone who contributes to the wellbeing of the community through regular small acts of helpfulness and kindness. Living in a state of compassionate mindfulness is a proven indicator of happiness and wellbeing. Throughout my ten years of living in the St Margaret’s school family I have witnessed so many acts of kindness and compassion and so many shining ‘everyday superstars’.
hen she first arrived, Gillian likened the campus to a dented, rusty old jewelry box filled with shining jewels. “This school has always been about the people – our shining jewels, our taonga. These people grew closer and stronger, united in saving our great school in the face of unprecedented threats to our very existence in the challenges thrown at us by Mother Nature’s earthquakes. “That jewelry box is now a new splendid modern version of itself; a tribute to those who seized every opportunity, cared for each other and rebuilt and future proofed our school.” As a result, St Margaret’s is blessed with a school fit for the purpose of ‘educating young women to live and lead’ into their future. “I believe that never before have all-girls’ schools been so important in growing mana wahine and in nurturing and growing confident, compassionate women to make our world a better place.” Choosing the school that is right for your daughter is an important decision which no parent takes lightly. St Margaret’s College Open Day offers an insight into how academic excellence and co-curricular opportunities combine for Years 1 to 13, with boarding from Year 7. The emphasis is on learning, combined with wellbeing and pastoral care. Each year group has a programme specifically designed to meet their needs, ensuring customised learning for every girl. The girls are empowered to become strong, resilient young women who relate well to others and have confidence and empathy to build lasting relationships. Experience the St Margaret’s College difference at the Open Day on Friday 11 May from 10:30am to 1pm. The Principal’s address at 11:45am will feature talks from outgoing Executive Principal, Gillian Simpson, and Diana Patchett who will start in the role at the beginning of Term 3. One of my life long aims, as a principal, is to ensure all students are equipped with knowledge, skills and attitudes for their future lives and careers. To ensure students are equipped for their future, it is paramount that a personalised, futurefocused curriculum which develops students as self-regulated learners is provided. Selwyn House School offers the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), which is recognised globally as a future-focused curriculum based on intercultural understanding and respect. In effect, the PYP learner profile attributes we develop embody a future global citizen of the world.

ore learning in English, Mathematics and Science is complemented by transdisciplinary inquiries and rich tasks, which allow high levels of application, creativity and problem-solving. The development of these skills combined with crucial interpersonal skills, such as self-regulation, curiosity, and tolerance, enable Selwyn House girls to become confident and informed individuals eager to take their part in the world. Learning is further enhanced by the active role that our specialist teachers in Mechatronics, Robotics, Performing Arts, Music, Physical Education, Sports, Visual Art and Spanish invest in daily learning. Small class sizes ensure learning is personalised and teachers are able to build strong connections with each child and provide clear instruction in learning strategies enabling students to take control of their learning, know themselves as learners, self-regulate, and develop selfefficacy - all life-long learning skills. Selwyn House proudly encourages students to: • Ask questions and develop strong critical thinking strategies • Analyse complex concepts, work collaboratively and self-direct • Be creative, motivated and determined • Understand traditional arts and humanities while simultaneously having strong skills across all of the STEAM disciplines • Have a strong sense of empathy for others, be a confident leader and persist when facing challenges. You are invited to visit Selwyn House School to learn more about this futurefocused learning environment for girls in Years 1-8, nurturing Boarding House and co-educational Pre-school. “The secret of getting ahead is getting started and at The Cathedral Grammar School we aim to make that start something extraordinary for your child. Balancing our traditional Christian values with an energy to look forward, our students’ path to excellence begins here. Supported and encouraged by a culture of nurturing, knowing and growing, our students advance on their educational journeys with a solid foundation of academic success and a wellrounded character based on our Anglican character.”
Let the learning adventure begin
he Cathedral Grammar School is an independent school providing highquality education for pre-school, primary school and intermediate aged girls and boys. This is a place of ambition alongside preparation where students learn from the best right from the start. Every year level benefits from the expertise of our highcalibre specialist teachers across multiple subjects. And small class sizes mean a lot of individual attention, ensuring every child’s strengths are identified and built on, with support provided where and when needed. The school structure is unique and designed to ensure students have the opportunity to make the most of their formative school years. The school understands learning happens in different ways at different ages; its students work in both co-educational and single-sex learning environments at times when this best suits their learning journey. In PreSchool and the Junior School, children learn in a co-educational environment. Students in Years 4 to 8 attend either the Boys’ or Girls’ School. Allowing students the best of both worlds, single sex classes offer the opportunity to target and deliver the curriculum in the most effective and interesting style possible, while social skills are developed by sharing mixedenvironment break times, specialist classes and activities. Creativity and culture play a big role here with four choirs and hundreds of individual music, speech and drama lessons every week. It’s also a proud sporting school, providing students with the facilities and encouragement to try their hand at a range of sports and recreation activities. Ultimately, The Cathedral Grammar School is committed to providing a balance of tradition and rigour, while being curious and adventurous every day. The Cathedral Grammar School – aspiring since 1881.

St Michael’s Church School PENNY TATTERSHAW PRINCIPAL
Appointed in January, Penny is excited to be the new principal at St Michael’s Church School. “Our young pupils have limitless potential to lead exciting and generous lives,” Penny says. “We have the responsibility to educate and inspire them, to encourage every child to flourish, in mind, body and spirit. It’s a privilege to be entrusted by parents with the task of providing their children with the essential foundations for their education – for their lives,” she believes. Having studied law at Oxford University, Penny trained at Exeter University School of Education. She has enjoyed a 30-year career teaching in prep schools around the globe.
s a history teacher, heritage matters to Penny. “St Michael’s has been educating children at the heart of our city for over 165 years. And we’re really excited! The city is thriving around us and St Michael’s is flourishing.” At St Michael’s, small co-ed classes and specialist teachers ensure each child is an individual. “But of course we know our pupils well,” Penny says. “St Michael’s might be at the heart of city, but at the heart of St Michael’s are the essential virtues of Christianity and good citizenship: respect, integrity, faith, hope and love.” St Michael’s is a prep school for Years 1-8. “An independent school education at the primary level is a great gift,” Penny believes. “Your child’s traditional foundations in English and Maths are assured.” This academic rigour then underpins St Michael’s wider curriculums in Science, History, Geography and Spanish. “And we teach IT literacy, rather than assume it,” Penny says. A prep education offers balance. St Michael’s cultural and sports’ programmes further develop each child’s foundation, as creativity and problem-solving come in many forms. Specialist art and music classes are enjoyed weekly; and most pupils play at least one instrument, “be it piano or flute, bassoon or bongos,” Penny laughs. “And we have two choirs, and speech and drama lessons. “Our extended campus is pretty impressive: today, the Art Gallery; tomorrow, the Gardens; next week… Actually, next week it’s our Open Day. Come and see us,” Penny invites. “We’d love to meet you!”

C St Andrew’s College CHRISTINE LEIGHTON RECTOR
With a wonderful year of Centenary celebrations now behind St Andrew’s College, Rector Christine Leighton says the StAC community has its sights set firmly on the future. “We look forward to new horizons, as we honour many of our old traditions, yet also create new ones which will inspire future generations. The essence of being a St Andrew’s College student, however, remains the same. The pride of wearing the thistle, the stirred emotion in hearing the pipes, the sense of belonging, and the shared values of truth, excellence, faith, honesty, generosity, compassion, hope, respect and responsibility, which underpin everything we do at St Andrew’s College.”
If you can think it, we can do it.
hristine became the first female Rector at St Andrew’s College when she was appointed to the role in 2007. She is proud to lead the only independent co-educational school offering boarding in the South Island, with its vibrant, engaged learning environment. “I was educated in a co-educational school myself and believe it is the best way to prepare young people for their future. After all, life is co-ed.” Students at St Andrew’s are encouraged to strive for excellence in their academic, sporting and cultural pursuits, with their many successes widely celebrated. However, the students’ well-being and helping them to flourish are equally important at the College, Christine says. “The latest research shows learning is profoundly affected by well-being. We guide our students to not only cultivate their intellectual minds, but to develop a broad set of character strengths, virtues and competencies, which together support their physical and mental well-being.” These values are also part of the High-Performance Sport and Elite Studies programmes at St Andrew’s, which are delivering some great results. “Recent successes include our Senior Boys’ and Girls’ A Volleyball teams both winning Canterbury Championships, our Mixed Tennis team finishing runners-up at national level, our rowers making nine A finals at Maadi Cup, and our athletes winning eight titles at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships.” In the innovation space, Christine says St Andrew’s is looking forward to the opening of The Green Library and Innovation Centre in June, where students will be able to read, research, explore emerging technologies such as 3D printing and robotics, share ideas, and innovate. “This development is one of the exciting new ways we are helping students to embrace, and engage with life in a rapidly changing world,” Christine says.

Kia ora tātou. Welcome to Hagley’s Junior Graduating College! What’s important at Hagley, a school with a 160-year history making it nearly as old as Christchurch itself? Our values matter. Those values are seen in the relationships our teachers build with each of our students. It’s how we treat our students that sets Hagley apart, valuing them as individuals – that is the Hagley way. What does that mean for our students? They feel that teachers are interested in them and care about their learning; they feel that they’re experiencing success – and much more.

hen you enrol into the Junior College at Hagley, you are in a learning environment that will enable you to achieve and exceed your goals and have a great overall experience at Hagley. The school offers a range of support throughout your children’s junior years. From the beginning the students are tested and interviewed to see where they will slot in best. They then receive amazing pastoral support from both tutors and deans, and they will get to work on achieving Hagley Credits throughout the year to graduate into the following year. “We’re often asked, what makes Hagley different,” Principal Mike Fowler says. “We have a culture like no other. No one wears a uniform and everyone’s on a first name basis. But that’s just for starters. Students come to Hagley because they’re treated with respect, accepted for who they are as unique individuals. They know it’s cool to be different!” It’s a strong framework, designed to get the best out of its students. At Hagley, learning is enhanced within the context of a student’s individual learning needs and is applied to their learning within the classroom setting. A wide range of support is offered aimed at scaffolding students’ learning appropriately to their needs. “We love our students aiming high and doing well,” Mike says. “We believe there is no single stereotype for success. At Hagley being successful comes in many shapes and forms. “We want you to feel excited about coming here. We look forward to you being part of Hagley’s 2019 Junior Graduating College!”

We’re seeing updated retro sneakers from the likes of Adidas, Converse and Vans setting the tone when it comes to shoes. Chunky soles are back in, while embroidered flowers are also making their mark and simple slip-ons offer casual chic. Jewel hues and pastels are just some of the colours creeping into the consciousness, though traditional white never really lost its cool cred. a healthy smile Let’s not forget our bottom teeth.
H AIRDRE S SING
esearch tells us that whether you had braces or not and whether you have wisdom teeth or not, your bottom front teeth will crowd with age. As the teeth concertina up at the front they can cause extra pressure onto the back of the top teeth when you bite together and then move or chip your upper teeth. Crooked teeth are more difficult to clean and your gum health can deteriorate. With age you also show more of your bottom teeth and less of your top teeth as gravity takes its toll. So the bottom teeth are more visible when you talk or smile. For these reasons it is now recommended internationally that the retainer wires that are placed after braces are left there forever and replaced if needed. If you notice your bottom teeth crowding as an adult, modern orthodontics can correct the problem in as little as eight weeks. Often invisible braces are an option. Once the bottom teeth are straight, any chips or wear on the top and bottom teeth can be replaced and that lovely youthful smile can return. Duxton Dental’s expert team can also discuss reliable tooth whitening options for the return of that extra sparkle. As part of a very thorough new patient examination, Duxton Dental completes a smile assessment to discuss all your cosmetic concerns and options. Though it’s more commonly known as autumn on this side of the world, the fact this season’s moniker is known to some as fall is a fashionable little irony, as we’re falling for this shade in all its seasonal glory.

hether you think of it as plum, burgundy, deep red, maroon, wine or even oxblood as it was known when it broke out as 2012’s seasonal shade, this moody tone signifies that the warm weather is officially coming to an end. Head Turning Wigs The Christchurch branch of Georgies Wig Shop has just celebrated its first birthday. There are many reasons people require wigs such as chemotherapy, alopecia, hair loss, or transgender people who want to look their best.
“A
s well as hundreds of wigs, we stock a range of turbans, headbands and alternative headwear which gives our customers a lot of choice,” says Charolette from the Christchurch shop. “Our job is special. Whether helping people
going through chemo to feel better or celebrating with a transgender person who looks fabulous, we love what we do.” Eleanor Burgess established Georgies Wig Shop in Palmerston North in 1993 when a close friend was diagnosed with cancer and wanted a quality wig she could rely on. Georgies’ team of consultants offer private consultations in the salon, at your home or in the hospital (clip ins can be done in-salon only). The products do not damage hair and are easy to wear. The real hair wigs can be treated just like your own and be foiled, curled and straightened. “We pride ourselves on treating every client with discretion and respect. We hope to take away the stigma often associated with hair loss and love to help people find wigs that make them feel completely themselves,” Eleanor says.

good nutrition A lifetime of
As women’s bodies grow and change, nutritional needs change too. Sara Widdowson, a Nutrition Consultant and Dietitian at Oxford Women’s Health, shares her expert advice on staying healthy at every age and stage of life.
1. 2.
3. SaraWiddowson Widdowson Sara
What are the top priorities for children and adolescents when it comes to good nutrition? Children and adolescents are still growing and need lots of energy. Rather than filling them up with calorie-dense foods, keep the focus on nutrient-rich foods, such as colourful vegetables, lean meat and milk, to make sure they are getting all they need to thrive. Encouraging children to listen to their bodies – like stopping eating when they’re full – helps to establish good eating habits that will set them up for life. For young women, iron intake is particularly important. Meat, nuts, and leafy-green vegetables all contain iron. What should pregnant women be eating to help improve the health of their baby? Instead of ‘eating for two’, pregnant women should be eating food that is twice as healthy. ‘Quality over quantity’ is an easy way to think about it. What mum puts in her body is really important for the baby’s development. Folate from foods such as dark green vegetables, beans and lentils helps to prevent neural defects, while iodine is important for brain development, for example.
4. 5.
Do nutritional needs change when you are having a period? Your basal-metabolic rate – how much energy you’re burning at rest – is higher when you are having a period. I encourage women not to avoid that hunger but to try and choose nutrient-dense foods. Instead of chocolate, try magnesium-rich options like nuts and seafood.
Which foods are beneficial for women going through menopause? Oestrogen and progesterone drop during menopause, which is particularly detrimental to bone health. Upping your calcium intake by eating canned fish, soy products and calcium-rich milk is crucial during this time. There’s evidence to suggest that foods like tofu, milk, chickpeas, flaxseeds and lentils can help to reduce menopause symptoms.
Do older people have different nutritional needs? When you get older you lose your thirst receptors, which means you can be dehydrated and not know it. Have a jug of water or water bottles in your fridge, so you can make sure you are drinking enough. Getting short doses of vitamin D from the sun every day is important for bone health. Deficiency in B12 is also very common in older people, so including foods like milk, eggs, fish and chicken in your diet is key. The most important thing to do at any age is to eat a nutrient rich diet. Eat vegetables at every meal, if possible, and include ‘good fats’ like oily fish, avocado and flaxseed oil in your daily routine.

Bollywood Kathak Fusion Dance: Pioneered in New Plymouth, this new flavour of Indian dance sees traditional Indian choreography paired with contemporary, upbeat tunes with a good dose of Bollywood thrown into the mix for eclectic measure. It involves plenty of over the top animated movements and works everything from the face to the feet. Lyrical Dance: This is all about expressing yourself. Resembling ballet and honouring the technical elements of classical ballet, it loses its conservative streak by paying homage to the fluid and freedom focused aspects of jazz, comtemporary and modern dance. It’s based on choregraphy as well as self-interpretation of a musical beat with emotion leading the way. Zumba: Perhaps one of the most famous exports of the 90s, Zumba blends hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue and mambo. It remains a viral fitness programme with approximately 15 million people taking classes across the world every week. Capable of helping participants burn up to 600 calories per session, it targets the abs, thighs, arms and muscles throughout the body. Clubbing collectives: Inspired by the nightclub scene, people throughout the world are taking their cues from sweaty dance parties to meet their fitness needs. Live DJs and disco lights inspire you to dip a little lower and bring those knees just that little bit higher for those who want to seriously let loose without having to stay out quite so late on a school night. Hula hoop dancing: A total body workout that offers a great level of fitness, hula hooping is as much fun as it is a recreational option. Set to music, hula hooping is a complete core workout (cue the killer abs!), activating some 30 muscles in and around your body’s core, but the best part about this is the fun factor, with hooping classes offered at many gyms and dance fitness studios.

THUMBS UP
Geographically Queenstown may be at the bottom of the country, but it has made its way to the top when it comes to popularity, with fans of the Southern Hemisphere’s premium visitor destination giving the city a big thumbs up on social media.
Q
ueenstown’s official Facebook account has recently topped 300,000 followers, making it the most popular official New Zealand destination page on the social media platform. The city’s social media presence continues to resonate with Facebook users, attracting strong engagement from followers dreaming of a visit, or looking forward to their next holiday, and continued growth in followers in the evercompetitive social media environment. Queenstown’s platforms feature inspiring content including high-quality imagery, video and content from local and visiting creators, photographers and media and user-generated content from visitors to Queenstown. And with Google research showing that 26 percent of leisure travellers who use the internet to plan travel are looking at social networking sites and apps, Queenstown’s popularity on these channels is vital for the resort town. Destination Queenstown Marketing and Communication Director Sarah O’Donnell has welcomed this milestone. “We use our social media platforms to inspire travellers to visit with images of our stunning landscapes and compelling content to give our followers a taste of the adventure that awaits in Queenstown. “We’d like to say thank you to our engaged community of followers and encourage those who are still arm-chair travellers to come for a visit soon.”

ith the trees now displaying the full spectrum of goldenbronze to rusty-red hues, mild temperatures and plenty of daylight hours, Mark believes the pre-winter conditions and stunning scenery are ideal for both cyclists and walkers. He’s on his bike most weekends in the 120-kilometre network of trails and tracks that make up the Queenstown Trail. And, after a year in the job, he is more passionate than ever. “The Queenstown Trail is very multipurpose,” Mark says. “It’s a fantastic ride experience for visitors from out of town, but also a great commuter trail for residents. With Queenstown under a bit of infrastructure pressure, it means people can use a different mode of transport to get to work. So it serves a wide range of users.” From April to June, the views along Queenstown Trail are breathtaking. It traverses two impressive suspension bridges, crosses three rivers (the Kawarau, Shotover and Arrow) and circumnavigates Lake Wakatipu and Lake Hayes. “At this time of year, you get a beautiful mist. It’s pretty spectacular seeing the mountains poking out from the mist. And you get the first snowfalls, so it looks like a dusting of icing sugar on top of the mountains. With the golden trees and snow, it’s a really nice mixture of colours.” Mark recommends trying Arrow River Bridges Ride during autumn. For more information, visit www.queenstowntrail.org.nz.

enjoy. Families are working hard and trying to hold down two jobs… sometimes that sense of community gets swamped.” Although Queenstown has firmly cemented its reputation as a hub for outdoor activities and adventure sports, Duncan believes the rich and thriving creative side of the Southern Lakes district is often overlooked. “We see Luma as really helping to put our region on the map as a respected cultural and arts destination.” Without spoiling too much of the surprise, Duncan says this year the aim is to “pull people down a rabbit hole of visual delights”. It’s safe to say that the audience will be stimulated, and enlightened – literally and figuratively. “Every year we want to change people’s expectations of what Luma is about. If you’ve been before you’ll have a new and different experience this time.” Aucklander Angus Muir, who has been recognised internationally, returns as principal light installation artist, featuring alongside creative art luminaries such as Daniel Brown, Jon Baxter, Puck Murphy, Mapping Mondays and Nocturnal. Luma Southern Light Project is at Queenstown Gardens/Marine Parade for Queen’s Birthday Weekend (Friday 1 June to Monday 4 June), 5pm-10pm. entral Queenstown will shine brightly for four nights over Queen’s Birthday Weekend when the LUMA Southern Light Project comes to town. The free public event, now in its third year, attracted more than 35,000 visitors in 2017 and has gained a loyal following among locals as well as people from around New Zealand and overseas. Set within the idyllic Queenstown Gardens and along the waterfront, the festival will transform the giant natural amphitheatre into an illuminated winter wonderland full of art, curated collections of stunning light sculptures and thought-provoking installations. Luma was the brainchild of SILO, a collective of Southern Lakes professionals which – along with its wider group of fellow hard-working volunteers – is highly motivated to give the region more exposure to culture and creativity, to foster and enhance social wellbeing and develop a stronger sense of community. Duncan Forsyth, whose day job is General Manager and Winemaker at Mount Edward, contributes countless hours of his ‘spare’ time while wearing the hat of Luma Light Festival Trust Chairman. For him it’s all about wanting to “give something back” by providing an event that is entertaining, accessible, familyfriendly and joins everyone together. “It looks like all the streets are paved with gold in the Southern Lakes,” Duncan says. “But the reality is that it can be a very difficult and costly place to live in and to

Winter Eats By Melinda Collins
A 1. 3.
Conventional wisdom has it that in lieu of thermals and scarves, the cooler temperatures trigger a biological change that make animals inclined to eat higher quantities of energy-dense food to keep warm.
nd, although we humans may not put on our own winter coats in this evolutionary sense, fact is cooler temperatures, fewer daylight hours and more time spent inside can all have a significant effect on when, how much and even what we’re hungry for. A perfect pairing A healthy slow-release breakfast designed to keep you full of energy until lunch, porridge is a great way to start the day and makes a perfect pairing with nuts or seeds and some seasonal winter fruit like apples, pears, cranberries or dates. Iron-rich inspiration Red meats, lentils and green leafy vegetables are good sources of iron, which supports a healthy immune system and what better opportunity than this to incorporate some inspiring eats like the pictured lamb cutlets from Twentyfour Catering Co that made our delicious cover this issue.
5.
At the root of health You’ve likely heard of the traditional ‘comfort foods’, but there’s actually plenty of nutritious options out there too. Roasted root vegetables are a delicious and sweet option, or soups packed with vegetables – and garlic and ginger for an added nutritional kick.
Twentyfour Catering, photographer Tegan Clark. 54 April 26, 2018 Metropol
While we don’t see anything wrong with indulging a little over the winter months, our diets can be an integral ally in the war against the sniffles and snuffles. So how can we pack a nutritional punch powerful enough to wage a strong dietary defence?
2. 4. 6.
A powerful punch Foods like sweet potatoes, tomatoes, red peppers and citrus fruits pack a powerful vitamin C punch and, when it comes to immunity and energy, vitamin C is top of the nutritional charts.
Zoom in on zinc When the temps start to plummet, we can come into contact with cold and flu viruses. Zinc can help contribute to a well-functioning immune system. Oysters, spinach and legumes are good sources.
Back to B12 basics Fish such as salmon and cod, as well as milk, eggs and cheese, are a great source of vitamin B12. A nutritional immune system support, B12 also contributes to a reduction in tiredness and fatigue.
A Sporty Spot At 8 Yaldhurst Road, a hop, skip and a jump from Riccarton race course, you’ll find a great place to not only have a cold beer and some great food, but perhaps some top accommodation too!

he Horse and Jockey is a popular little spot with great deals for those looking for more than just your average sports bar. With 2 for 1 steak nights on Monday – that’s two steaks for $25 – and quiz night on Tuesday; Wednesday night is a DJ night and, with Canterbury University just around the corner, it’s good for students too. Perhaps you could take the odd punt on a nag or two at the TAB or have a flutter on the pokies. The sports bar also supports local sports teams, so it’s the ideal location to catch up with your mates after the game or even talk to them about sponsorship. You can make it your clubrooms for your sport. That’s right, they get involved because they’re local. With brews to suit most tastes and a great deal on Mumms Champagne for extra special celebrations, it’s worth dropping in to see what’s happening. If you’re a rep on the road or just needing some good accommodation there are 23 fully enclosed suites upstairs. There is even room service but who wants to stay upstairs when you have a bar filled with friendly staff and a great set of locals to enjoy the company of? Great for business trips, great for fun, The Horse and Jockey is your next visit for a great time out.

Favourite local performers include The Eastern, this year teaming up with local master chef Richard Till for Country Eats, and two great food and music shows on 25 and 26 May at the Lyttelton Arts Factory. Food, wine and jazz lovers have it all matched up with a three-course southern food dinner menu at Hotel Montreal, accompanied by live music of New Orleans by King Tubbs and wine pairings from award-winning Black Estate, on 24 and 25 May. For three days Christchurch will be humming to the beat of free music from the River City Jazzmen on the Christchurch Tramway from 12 noon to 2pm on Thursday 24, Friday 25 and Saturday 26 May, while Jazz for lunch at The Piano highlights the sounds and souls of Georgie Clifford and Alice Tanner on 24 and 25 May. To wrap up, local singer Roslen Ulaula will present a Jill Scott tribute at Christchurch Boys’ High School on 27 May, before the festival after-party jam hits Blue Smoke that evening. Easy Living By Kate Pierson
Simple living is easier said than done. Not dissimilar to the skill involved with writing a concise, compelling letter, the art of creating a minimalist space that makes an impact takes creative courage and a sense of conviction that less truly is more. It’s a challenge not for the faint hearted.
If you’re a minimalist at heart and hold sustainability in high regard but find yourself giving in to overdressing your environment for fear of it looking bland, we have some top tips to help you on your way to pared-back perfection. Space out your pieces: Minimalist spaces benefit from an uncluttered aesthetic. A living room, for example, may only have the essentials, including a few key furniture pieces with adequate space between them and clear surfaces – few, if any, knicknacks; smart storage solutions to hide anything superfluous to requirement. Quality over quantity is the aim of this style game.
68 April 26, 2018 Metropol
Limited colour palette: A calming, easy environment will always downplay its colour. That’s not to say you have to stick to plain white, but a gentle approach to colouring your home life is key. Muted tones like soft greys, creams, greige (beige and grey) are all great companions to a minimalist space. Laid back luxury is only ever just one lick of paint away.
Worry about the small things: Sounds ironic doesn’t it? But really, attention to detail is absolutely everything when you are taking a step away from a relaxed, layered vibe, to an intentionally barer look. Take time to consider any additions to the space, and don’t be afraid to remove things. Less is always more with this aesthetic.
home Forsyth Barr Stadium, photos courtesy of Dunedin Venues
I
t is without doubt that we are a city capable of hosting events, with the World Busker’s Festival, the Under 19 Cricket World Cup and the recent Black Caps/England Cricket test, as recent examples. However, our lack of facilities means we often miss out on events such as the upcoming Shania Twain tour or the recent Ed Sheeran South Island visit. While it is easy to see the potential economic loss we face as a result of no stadium, what we aren’t as quick to focus on, is the social impact. Approaching it as an opportunity, the Dunedin City Council thought big when it came to hosting Ed and, as a result, gained much more than economic success for their city. They renamed the city DunEDin, closed streets and, with the addition of food stalls and street performers, achieved a wonderful party atmosphere. They approached the concerts like guests coming to dinner: they tidied up, set the table, put their best foot forward and enjoyed the fruits of their labour, achieving something truly special while propelling their city into the international spotlight, firmly establishing Dunedin as a destination and should be celebrated for their ambitious approach and innovative thinking. What their success also highlighted was the need and importance of our stadium – or lack thereof. There is no doubt that our council needs to look beyond the cost to build the stadium and get going. In order to make Christchurch a destination, we need to establish ourselves as an attraction and give people a reason to return to our city, sooner rather than later.
We have all the facilities for tourists: beautiful restaurants, accommodation options, bars and retail, the operators of which have invested in our city. Now it is time for our city to invest in them and help draw the crowds. With this in mind, we need to ask ourselves whether what we are planning is enough. Why are we not building something that will propel us into the spotlight and make Christchurch a true international destination? Perhaps we need to be more aspirational in our thinking – why not build towards the 2030 Commonwealth Games? The benefits, social and economic, are there for all to see – now we just need to get on and do it, all while ensuring we aren’t being shortsighted in the process. Let’s not continue to argue over a 35,000-seat stadium; we need to stretch ourselves and set Christchurch apart. It is no longer enough to replicate Dunedin’s stadium as they have proved they can offer both performers and visitors much more than a one-off concert; it’s the opportunity to experience an event. Having personally experienced DunEDin, I would drive the ten hours there and back again tomorrow in order to do it all over. They aspire to host big names and in this case they rose to the challenge. Dunedin had the foresight to see that the reward goes beyond the one-off monetary boost from a single event – the question is, can we? And how much more are we prepared to miss out on? A ‘superhome’ showcase
Once again, the Superhome Tours will feature work by Bob Burnett Architecture, which is noted for both award-winning design and energy efficient, environmentally sound buildings.
70 April 26, 2018 Metropol
ob is dedicated to improving the quality and performance of homes, by encouraging people to see beyond the substandard building-code minimum. New Zealand has the highest rate of childhood asthma in the world, with 30 percent of our seven-year olds being afflicted and research has shown that our cold, damp houses are to blame. Bob co-founded the Superhome Movement in 2015, to generate open source sharing of new design ideas, technologies and building techniques – connecting consumers and industry groups to achieve collaboration, resulting in higher building standards that are economic and socially sustainable. Following on from the Superhome Movement’s hugely popular Superhome Tours in Christchurch in 2016/17, this year’s tours are taking place across New Zealand, providing an opportunity for both consumers and those working in the industry to learn more about what’s involved in designing and building warmer, dryer, healthier homes. Research shows that more than 80 percent of people decide what to build after visiting a show home and, with 95 percent of homes being built by group home builders, the Superhome Tours offer a rare chance for the public to see warm, energy efficient homes that exceed the building code. Starting from 9 June, the Christchurch tours will take place over three weekends, with workshops to be held in the months following. To get involved, go to www.superhome.co.nz or for more information visit www.bbarc.com.

THE MISSING MIDDLE
A
ffordable, sophisticated living with a strong focus on community and proximity to amenities, this architectural typology is definitely not short of fans offshore and is establishing itself as a smart living solution on home soil. Dubbed ‘the missing middle’, medium density is classified by the Ministry for Education as comprehensive developments including four or more dwellings with an average density of less than 350 m2 per unit. In plain speak this translates to a new generation of housing that ticks all the boxes, something that is summarised best by Architectural Designers of New Zealand CEO Astrid Andersen. “When done well, medium density can benefit the whole of New Zealand; we see improved health outcomes, less car usage and less power usage. (It) meets the requirements of a diverse community with mixed housing options; creates communities; keeps New Zealand arable land for arable use and fulfils key sustainability principles.” Explore Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration if you’re in the market for a new abode. You may have found your dream home with the missing middle.

At its simplest, a professional cleaning firm is highly experienced, with the products and techniques to tackle any manner of mess. While at face value, this provides a tidy space for you to get on with life, at a deeper level it gives the safety that comes from professionally removing germs and pathogens that risk your health. Cleaning is, after all, not always a one size fits all affair and turning a professional hand over to this job can ensure your service is customised to your needs and it can be as simple or as thorough as you choose. Although the state of cleanliness can be somewhat subjective, varying at least in some degree from person to person, what’s more objective are the sanitation practices and procedures that a professional cleaner adheres to, in order to keep your space germ free. After all, they make it their business to keep your business clean.

wner Catherine Matthews has sourced gorgeous scarves by Pom. Made in Amsterdam in cotton as silky as English Lawn, they’re adorned with artwork from turtles and tigers to village scenes. And stylish Italian scarves are of linens, cashmere and modal. Hand-selected raincoats, by Ilse Jacobsen of Denmark, are practical but feminine investment pieces. Heavier-weight, washable, water-repellent jackets are ultra-warm as are the quilted coats. In contrast, the shell and feather-down jackets are super light. Colours range from mustard, taupe and French pink to inky-hued navy. Shaped to fashionably flatter, the detailing is divine. Other gifts for mums are beautiful interior books, handmade European jewellery, candles and French soaps in glamorous scents such as cassis and mistral – or why not gift champagne or prosecco gummies in a classic little lolly jar?

soften winter

make winter a
big old sotie By Terra Viva Director Peter Worsp
Driving through heavy new snow in early April, I got the impression that winter could be early, long, and none too clement. Which is all fine if you’re a hibernating bear, but for those who have to carry on as per normal, despite sub-zero temperatures and limited daylight, home becomes a refuge against the outside world.
nce inside, everything can change into a warm haven and the trends this year are certainly towards a cosy feeling of luxury with an emphasis on enhancing winter white with silvers and greys, using mossy greens, foam/French blue, lavender, plum and blush pink to add colour and warmth. By adding a few key softening elements and moving furniture around for a ‘winter’ look, you can breathe a whole new feel into living areas. Texture features strongly again this winter with linen making a real comeback in cushions, and quilted velvet adding a touch of sumptuous luxury in throws and ‘comfort blankets’. Wrap yourself up in a tasselled woollen throw on the sofa and you’ll find it very hard not to feel enclosed and cossetted. Add in plenty of cushions and the scene is complete. Texture is definitely what it’s all about in cushions this season with cotton, linen, fur, Indian cotton, and velvet with a linen backing featuring. Lighting is a key element in creating that warm haven to come home to at the end of a cold day and we have plenty of lamps at the moment, including both side lamps and floor lamps, with lots more to come yet. Separate lampshades are also available if the home lighting scene needs a bit of a revamp. And, of course, candles never go out of favour – what beats a hot bath surrounded by candles to soothe and reinvigorate after a trying day? The range of scented candles is huge and some of the favourites are Sweet Grapefruit, Gardenia, and eucalyptus and lavender. The houseplant trend is as strong as ever as an essential part of home décor and provides the finishing touch to the cosy winter scene. There’s something about houseplants that adds life to any interior décor, and of course they’re brilliant air cleaners and filters. If you’re emphasising the luxurious look then Phalaenopsis orchids definitely add the right touch with the bonus of months-long flowering. There are plenty of easy-care varieties like Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, Peace Lilies (one of the most effective air cleaners), Dracaenas, Monsteras, and Fiddle-Leaf Figs available. And if you want years-long flowering the artificial option will give you just that. Our faux collection this winter is strong on both flowers and foliage with lines like grey gum nuts and amber coloured eucalyptus to add to the feeling of warmth. The peonies, iris, and artificial Phalaenopsis are so lifelike that most of our customers are fooled by them and for those who are confined to indoors for the winter the artificials are an easy way of bringing colour indoors. For smaller posies check out the bunches of heath or the soft lavender for smaller spaces. Metropol April 26, 2018 77

ach passing season brings with it the perfect opportunity to introduce a new aesthetic to the home and, with the cold weather encroaching, it’s time to rug up. If there’s anything to look forward to when it comes to winter, it’s the seasonal selections it offers. After all, when the going gets chilly, the chilly get... a good throw. Moody bedrooms in deliciously dark greys, inky blues and muddy greens are expected to top the trends over winter’s 2018 incarnation, and they look so inviting when teamed with the textures and layers of snuggly throws and rugs. So throw caution to the wind and layer up, your home will thank you for it.

AN AUTOMOTIVE OVERVIEW By Melinda Collins
When it comes to the automobile, the road to success has been paved with innovation and, although one could argue the automotive vehicle’s modern incarnation works in much the same way as its early predecessors, there’s no denying that it is an industry which continues to push the bounds of technology.
A
t its heart, the manufacturing processes behind vehicle production are becoming quicker, cheaper, safer, more efficient and better
for the environment, with the automotive industry estimated to be 90 percent cleaner than 20 years ago, despite epic increases in production.
The resulting products too are more creative, clever, cleaner and colourful than ever before. We look at the driving forces behind this innovative industry.

TRUCKS TOP CHARTS
In New Zealand, the land of the long white cloud is becoming the land of SUVs and utes, with the best-selling vehicles of the Kiwi automotive charts for the past three years consisting of almost no traditional cars. The leader of the automotive pack for the past three years, the Ford Ranger headed both the light-commercial and overall new-vehicle sales segments for 2017, ahead of the Toyota Hilux. The popularity of these beefed up vehicles shows no sign of abating, which brings us to our next automotive trend…
CROSSOVER CRAZE
There’s an SUV in the range of almost every mainstream manufacturer now and their ‘souped up’ styling is having an increasing influence on the design of other vehicles, as standard car models become rugged versions of their more traditional rides, with raised suspension and additional body cladding. In fact, Crossover Utility Vehicles (CUVs) are becoming the darlings of urban forecourts, with the craze expected to continue to increase throughout 2018 as even more manufacturers get in on the action. Often more affordable to purchase and cheaper to run than traditional SUVs, they still offer the raised ride and high driving position we’re craving.
CLEVER CUSTOMISATION
No longer is vehicle shopping a one size fits all affair, with colour customisation proving increasing popular. Manufacturers are accommodating the market’s desire for unique colour combinations and never before have there been so many possibilities. A popular player in the ‘baby SUV’ market, the Citroen C3 Aircross offers 85 creative combinations, while Nissan offers more than 100 for both the exterior and interior of the small city runaround, the Micra.

motoring HYBRIDS GO HUGE
There’s been a significant increase in interest in petrol hybrids and, as more models hit the market, we can certainly expect this trend to continue. The longer battery ranges of plug-in hybrids and electric cars further increases their appeal and, as engines get smaller, more economical and cleaner without losing any power, they are getting attention on the mainstream market.
VEHICLE APP-EAL
Vehicles are getting smarter, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto heading towards ubiquity in 2018. Making the apps you use on your smartphone available every time you get behind the wheel, options such as Bluetooth, sat-nav and parking sensors – once the domain of premium brands – are now standard features in most new vehicles coming into the market. And better yet, wireless charging is increasingly common, as the number of smartphone handsets with this capability increases.
SAFETY AS STANDARD
We have seen many more vehicles offered with safety features such as forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and blind spot detection as standard or at least as an affordable option. With a greater emphasis being put on safety as a selling point for cars we should begin to see more advanced safety tech as standard as the year goes on.

Ever since the 2CV, Citroen’s resume is filled to the brim with fun compact cars full of character. Being a former Citroen AX GT owner, I am happy to supply a reference for this. However in recent times, Citroen’s small C3 range, which began in 2002, began to slowly lose that ‘joie de vivre’ which made the line up unique. Now though, the all-new C3 is here with more tech, willing engines and, of course, plenty of character and style from $26,990.

On the move, the C3’s award winning turbo three cylinder engine is a real peach. Its raspy exhaust note sounds mechanical and alive above 3,000rpm. A sweet reminder you are driving a car, not a hairdryer. Power delivery is relatively brisk but not rapid by any means. That said, it comes alive when you give it a boot full while overtaking. A bit of body roll in the bends shows the C3 is definitely geared more for ride comfort. Its soft suspension manages to soak up all the potholes and bumps you
could imagine. Steering does possess a lack of driver feedback but is certainly quick and precise, ideal when negotiating those often treacherous multi storey car parks. In summary, the 2018 Citroen C3 will not be everyone’s cup of tea. However it still manages to hold its own in a fiercely competitive market, providing a wellpriced, spacious, refined, fun little package with all the zest and charm that small Citroens of recent times have been lacking. Put simply, Citroen is back.

hether you factor in the two tier light cluster coupled with thin LED daytime running lights, or the floating roof design, available in contrasting colours, the C3 is a funky visual return to form for the French manufacturer. This form is also functional, with the air bump panels on the driver and passenger doors, first seen on the C4 Cactus. This means that shopping mall car park door dings are a thing of the past. The Puretech 1.2-litre turbocharged three cylinder engine is the C3’s sole engine choice, producing 81kW and 205Nm of torque. This coupled with a six speed automatic box gives you combined fuel figures of 4.9L/100km. Inside we find a simplistic and stylish cabin. The luggage strap inspired door handles really stand out and the amount of head and legroom is certainly generous. The new C3 is 82 mm longer than its predecessor and bootspace has increased to 300 litres. The centre 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit houses the controls for the climate control, media interface and Bluetooth, and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other tech includes Lane Departure Warning and Citroen’s optional ConnectedCam system. This utilises a HD wide angle camera with 16GB memory to take photos and record videos while on the move. Perfect to prove any accident you may have wasn’t your fault.

he centre dashboard incorporates Apple Car play with an interactive media system which was easy to use and, combined with the Harman Kardon sound system, enjoyable. I took it to Mount Somers and really got the feel of a solid driving vehicle – four cylinders with 185kW of torque; it’s sturdy with power right when you need it. Driving a new car, I’m looking for outstanding features and, on the way back, I encountered one. An accident logo appeared on the screen on the trip computer. Sure enough, we discovered there had been an accident. The feature enables you to navigate around accidents and road works with its interactive online system. Featuring gesture control, heads up display and driving assistant, it’s loaded with top of the line features. The sunroof is pleasant, and the automatic rear opening and closing is such a great feature for busy people getting family/ work loaded and unloaded. With so many bespoke options among the variant models, 10 different types of alloys alone, there’s an option for everyone. Now I’ve been a fan of BMW since the 1980s, so you’re preaching to the converted, but this has been a standout SUV based on its interior features and pure driving pleasure. It’s great to see and feel quality when you drive. The BMW is stocked right to the sunroof on all this.
