ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. The All Girl Big Band showcases the top talent of our female Christchurch jazz musicians.

“W

e had our debut at In The Loop at the Court Theatre, then after that followed gigs for Jazz After Work and the Swingtown Rebels.” With ages ranging from high school students through to 77 year old trombonist Jill Fenton, The All Girl Big Band showcases the top talent of our female Christchurch jazz musicians. “Our core philosophy has always been to celebrate the female musicians of this city,” Kate says. When asked what it takes to be in such a unique band, Kate replies without hesitation: “Passion – for the music, and for each other; and know your instrument and genre – the big band sound.” At the 2016 Christchurch Big Band Festival, the All Girl Big Band were given a standing ovation for their tribute to the late, great Natalie Cole. On Queens Birthday weekend, the band heads to the Manawatu Jazz Festival in Palmerston North, but before then, the girls have a super swing night planned for Sunday 14 May, at the Irish Society Hall, 29 Domain Terrace, Spreydon, from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. JEALOUS SABOTEURS

Lovers of modern art were amazed as the Christchurch Art Gallery last month officially unveiled their latest exhibition, Jealous Saboteurs, the first major exhibition of internationally acclaimed, New Zealand-born artist Francis Upritchard.

F

rom her early collections of Egyptian-inspired urns and mummies, to primate-like figures constructed from discarded fur coats, Upritchard’s sculptures have to be seen to be believed. “Francis Upritchard’s works are exquisitely imagined. They startle you with their peculiarity,” says Christchurch Art Gallery director Jenny Harper. “Visitors will come face-to-face with enigmatic figures, sprawling sloths and cabinets full of the unexpected in this unforgettable, major survey of her work.” Jealous Saboteurs is the result of over 20 years work by Upritchard to create something unique and all

her own. Described by many experts as “unusually rich in associations” and “oddly timeless,” the exhibition contains her little-seen early works, as well as a large room containing her recent sculptures. The exhibition is presented as a partnership between City Gallery Wellington and Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), Melbourne, and supported by the City Gallery Wellington Foundation. It has been curated by MUMA director Charlotte Day and City Gallery Wellington’s chief curator Robert Leonard. Francis Upritchard: Jealous Saboteurs is on display at Christchurch Art Gallery from 25 March to 16 July 2017. Entry is free.

hat is a MenzShed? The concept is to bring retired men together in one community space to share their skills, have a laugh and to work on practical tasks, either individually for personal projects, or as a group on projects for the community. “The Lincoln Rotary Club felt a MenzShed would be a good thing for Lincoln,” says John Doocey, President of the committee organising the project. “They approached me about setting one up because of my background in the building industry.” Integral to a MenzShed is a workshop and machinery. The machinery part of the Lincoln equation has been sorted through a generous donation of equipment by Gerald McCarthy, a former builder and member of the Rotary Club. The organising committee has also secured a site for the shed in Meijer Drive through the Selwyn District Council and has some funding from Pub Charities Ltd. “We estimate it will cost between $100,000 and $120,000 to build the 250 square metre facility we have in mind for the Lincoln MenzShed. We want to have not only a workshop, but also a meeting room where members can come just for a coffee and a chat, or to hear talks about various men’s issues. Now we are looking for any other assistance we can get.” If you can help with bringing the Lincoln MenzShed to fruition, or would like to be involved with the project, contact John Doocey on (03) 325 3087 or email dooceyjd43@gmail.com.

A GLORIOUS MAKER & MAMA

G

emma Adams is the contemporary personification of a hunter gatherer. An expert forager for all things bright and beautiful, the maker, mama of Margot and genius purveyor and curator of modern spaces, Gem generously shares her foray into the stylist scene with Metropol.

Although it is a melting pot of so many beautiful elements, how would you sum up www.theblackbird.co.nz? The Blackbird is basically a tangible place where I can share things. Things I am making, work I am doing, and a little glimpse into our everyday life as well. I have always loved taking pictures, and tend towards an image heavy, rather than word heavy space. You have talked about your wanderlusting ways in your blog, how does your work enable you to channel the sense of freedom and imagination that your adventures did once upon a time? As someone who not only likes a challenge but also change - very much a carry-over from years of living on the road with my husband’s then band - my work as a stylist and our shop does exactly this. Pieces that I do for the likes of Homestyle and Resene are always short and sweet projects, I can be completely absorbed in an idea

or inspiration, and once the shoot is complete, move on, often using our travels as inspiration. Then of course with our store Blackbird Goods. An amazing trade off to long hours is being able to source our product first-hand where we can. A huge part of our ethos is being able to understand how our products are being made and by who, which has meant trips to Thailand and Vietnam over the last few years and possibly another trip later in the year. Let’s hope Margot [daughter] loves to travel! When it comes to creating a home that speaks sincerely and authentically to your own heart, as opposed to being wooed by trends, where do you suggest people start? I think navigating that fine line is about incorporating pieces that tell your story. Pieces you may have collected over the years; that have been given or passed down to you; things that hold significance, these give substance to a space. Remembering that you can take your own spin on a current style is also key, adding in a few key pieces rather than fitting your space out just like you’ve seen in a catalogue or magazine. And lastly, buying with purpose. Knowing where that item will fit in your home, picking quality, and buying because you really love it, not just because it’s the latest and greatest. You recently become a Mama to a beautiful wee babe, what does motherhood and career balance look like for you? We welcomed Margot into our world in February, and leading up to her birth we had many discussions on how that would look. I knew I wanted to take the first three or so months to not even think work, then from there to take it a day at a time. I love my work and believe it’s healthy for me to exercise my brain in a different way, but at the end of the day, Margot and mothering her is my main priority at the moment, it’s already flying past so fast! In saying that, the idea of popping Margot in her sling and taking her on the job with me is definitely an option! What have been some of the most memorable milestones for you on your professional journey? I think the first time I saw my work in print in Homestyle and the time our lounge (plus myself and Frankie!) in our previous renovation made it on the cover. I still get a thrill every time I see my work around the place! You and your husband have almost magical powers when it comes to renovating a home! Just how hard is it? It definitely isn’t for the faint hearted! Living amongst a renovation, for a visual and slightly pedantic person like myself is a bit of a nightmare. But we really do love it. There is nothing like seeing the potential in a project unfold, especially when it is by your own two hands.

For entrepreneurs and fellow creatives starting out, what sage advice can you offer? Find your own place; look for that little gap that hasn’t been filled; create your vision; go for it. Writing a mission statement of sorts is such a help, as when you are making a decision or needing direction, coming back to your initial vision is super helpful, even if it’s to change it!

No one understands the value of a family home better than a family. It pays to shop around to compare all your options. Call us today.

THE MONEY In his role helping businesses with their tax obligations, Jason McFadden sees it all.

W

ith the new financial year just underway, strain on cash flow is often the elephant in the room especially so for those in their second business year. Running the day-to-day operations of a business is tough enough, and as a result, Jason sometimes deals with clients who’ve put things off. The trouble is, procrastination isn’t very strategic. People often say, ‘You don’t pay any tax in your first business year’. While that’s true, it doesn’t follow that year one is about getting started for free. It’s a great idea, but our tax system isn’t so generous. So here’s the deal: You start a business and the tax payable on your first year’s business profit – say it was last year, and ended on

31 March 2017 – is not due for payment until 7 April 2018. It’s a whole distant year away. However, if your tax bill adds up to more than $2,500, you are liable to pay your tax provisionally for the next income year, the year ending 31 March 2018, meaning payments start earlier. Typically, the earliest tax payment is 28 August 2017, followed by others on 15 January 2018 and 7 May 2018. So you can see, during your second business year, you’re paying two years’ worth of tax. POVERTY AND MUSE A POIGNANT PERFORMANCE THAT SPEAKS TO THE HEART

On the 70th anniversary of New Zealand-born avant-garde painter Frances Hodgkins’ death, her spirit and story will be brought to life through boutique theatre production Poverty and Muse.

I

ndependent Christchurch professional theatre company, One Man Banned Productions, is producing the show in partnership with the Christchurch Art Gallery. Shows are running at the Philip Carter Family Auditorium at the Art Gallery for two days only - on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 May. A thought-provoking look at the reality of being a cutting-edge woman artist at this time, this poignant play shows a cameo of Hodgkins’ life. We see her quirky and aging, lonely but resilient. Hodgkins’ companions are Poverty and Muse who are personified and played as a down-at-heel male and a beautiful, sensual young woman. Audiences will be captivated by the interplay in Hodgkins’ life between success and inspiration, and the harsh reality that, despite being acclaimed as England’s foremost woman artist, she was living in poverty. Real people from her life appear too. The cast of seven is directed by Martin Howells and the show designed by Julian Southgate. This production of Poverty and Muse will be a world premiere, and is writer Karen Zelas’s third play. It won the 2013 Playwrights Association of New Zealand competition for a new script. One Man Banned Productions intends to offer Poverty and Muse to other art galleries in the South Island and potentially in the North Island too. T

he 6.5 tonne, 10 metre- high replica flèche (slender spire) will be craned into position later this year. Its design and placement have been guided by historic drawings and photographs to ensure a close resemblance to the original flèche built in 1881. Master craftsman Michael Sinclair and his boss James Herdman say the Herringbone patterned tiling will also recall the earlier version. Michael and James, along with their keen apprentice Luke Mahon, make up the ace team working on the flèche restoration. Michael describes how he uses a blowtorch to heat, stretch and bend large sheets of thick lead which are then welded and laid over the wooden structure of the flèche. When placed on the building, a vertical steel bar beneath the structure ensures optimum bracing against seismic activity. Installation of the flèche will tick the Boys’ High restoration programme as complete - a magnificent coup for the Arts Centre. James Herdman shares his own thoughts on our emerging dreaming spire: “It will be the Crowning Glory of the Arts Centre – without a doubt!”

LIFE LOTTO THE DOG THAT WON

By Geoff Mehrtens

We get some interesting referrals from other practices at Ourvets. Many come from the West Coast.

B

ugsy lives in Hari Hari, and although he is a Shih Tzu, he enjoys the outdoor life and particularly going fishing at the beach with his owner Michael. Unfortunately for Bugsy, he also enjoys eating things he shouldn’t, and it was an unlucky episode when he swallowed a large baited fish hook, and ran down the beach until he came to a sudden stop. This was a serious problem. The large hook went well down his throat, and embedded in his esophagus, just over his heart. It needed to be removed. He still looked remarkably chipper when he arrived, but he was a deceptively tough and stoic dog. The esophagus is an amazing tube that connects our mouth with our stomach, but it takes a direct route through the chest passing by all manner of vital structures. This could be seen as something of a design fault. For example, when we fill our car with fuel, it does not go through the engine bay between the air

Michael and Bugsy – first day back fishing.

conditioning system, motor and battery, or via the electrics and exhaust to get to the tank. This would be too risky. Anyway, back to Bugsy. We had to enter the chest cavity between rib five and six, and the nurse commenced assisted breathing. There was quite a lot of free blood in the thoracic cavity, and we had to locate the shaft and eye of the hook nestled within the esophagus between two major blood vessels. Immediately below was the beating heart. My surgical window was surrounded by large vessels full of blood. An incision into the esophagus followed - the point of the hook was through the esophagus, lying deep and downwards from my incision on the other side of the chest, close to the aorta. I couldn’t remove it, or see the point of the hook. Additionally, the eye of the hook was tightly suspended by the nylon attached and lodged back up towards the mouth. A decision was made to rotate the point of the hook back up and through the wall of the esophagus, before cutting it off with the barb attached. From there, we had to pass the catheter down the esophagus through the incision and attach the remaining nylon, attempting to retrieve it via the mouth. With firm traction, out came a large knotted section of fishing nylon complete with rotten fish bait. So that was the smell! We closed the esophagus and closed the chest. Bugsy needs to buy a lotto ticket! When I rang Michael to ask permission to tell Bugsy’s story, I was pleased to hear that he was back to normal and was even off fishing on the weekend. Michael passed on his thanks to the great team of nurses and vets that made this surgery possible.

MEET THE PRINCIPAL 2017:

RANGI RURU GIRLS’ SCHOOL

DR SANDRA HASTIE:

Dr Sandra Hastie - Principal

W

It’s still early in the school year but already 2017 has been action packed for Rangi Ruru Girls’ School. From stunning sports results to exceptional NCEA endorsements; music excellence and involvement in global projects - students and staff are excited about what’s been achieved and what is still to come. Principal Dr Sandra Hastie says there’s a lot happening on campus which will encourage further achievement, collaboration, wellbeing and most importantly fun. Our Year 7 and 8 girls have moved into our beautiful Mana Wahine (meaning Strong Women) building, at the heart of Rangi Ruru,” she says. “This move was significant for us as we focus on being a true Years 7-13 school. This ensures we are giving all girls access to the many opportunities available right from the start of their Rangi journey and the chance to work alongside the older girls and specialist teachers.”

hen Dr Hastie took the reins as Principal at Rangi Ruru in January 2016, she emphasised the importance of expanding the school’s work around innovation and entrepreneurship. This continues to be a key focus. “For most of our students, the jobs they will end up doing, don’t even exist yet. We must be innovative as we prepare our students for their future, and part of doing that well, is about providing choices. Never should we limit what our girls can and should try, in fact one of the really important components of entrepreneurship is being able to ‘take risks’. At Rangi Ruru we encourage this by providing choice supported by specialist teachers, coaches and resourcing.” Dr Hastie points to sport and SOAR (the specialist programme for high achieving athletes); the Stellar programme for talented musicians; the Equestrian programme; and the partnership with career specialists Crimson Education as just a few of the areas where Rangi Ruru is leading the way. These options not only provide choice and flexibility but

bring girls from across the different years together. This is key because the way students support each other is closely related to fostering a strong school community where wellbeing is a priority. “Our students play a key leadership role at Rangi Ruru. Every year, girls are appointed to the Senior Leadership Team, each with a responsibility for a special focus including Community, Wellbeing, Sustainability, Culture, Service, Sport and Boarding. The leaders of our Clans (like Houses in other schools) also play a strong role and every leader knows the importance of fostering and maintaining relationships with girls across all year levels,” says Dr Hastie. Another strength of Rangi Ruru is the Boarding House. Located on the school campus it is a place that encourages strong friendships. Director of Boarding, Kyleigh Lyth would love to meet you if you would like to talk about boarding, either short or long term. Demand for places at Rangi Ruru in 2018 is already high so we strongly recommend early inquiry. Apply online now or come along to our Open Day, we’d love to show you around.

ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE

CHRISTINE LEIGHTON: Rector Christine Leighton says the co-educational environment at St Andrew’s was one of the biggest factors that drew her to the large, independent school a decade ago. “I was educated in a co-educational school myself and believe it is the best way to prepare young people for their future. It is a natural environment for them to be in, as after all, life is co-ed.”

Christine Leighton – Rector

In addition to their studies and co-curricular activities, students at St Andrew’s are encouraged to connect globally and serve the community, she says. “Through all these experiences, students are supported to have the best qualifications and personal qualities to take their next steps into the world and beyond.”

C

onnecting with students, parents and Old Collegians, and building on the excellent foundations already established at St Andrew’s are two things Rector Christine Leighton loves about her role at the College.

“We ve just shared our wonderful Centenary celebrations, and it was interesting to re¯ect back on all the changes over 100 years, yet realise those founding values of truth, excellence and faith still remain a core part of our culture at St Andrew s,” she says. Christine s passion for education has continued to grow through varied teaching positions across multiple sectors of secondary school education, including single-sex schools, co-ed, state, integrated and independent education. This is her tenth year as Rector at St Andrew s. The College has 1450 students which Christine says is an optimal size for supporting a wide range of student interests, that often can t be offered in a smaller school. “We are proud to offer a rich and balanced curriculum that has been developed to create depth and breadth in students learning and

to allow them to follow their dreams. Successes are generously celebrated and there is a genuine pride among current and past students in belonging to the St Andrew s College community.” Christine is proud of the record breaking academic achievement of St Andrew s students in 2016, who gained an impressive 205 Excellence endorsements across all Levels, with 98% of students gaining NCEA Level 1, 99.5% achieving Level 2 and 97.7% gaining Level 3. Seventeen students were awarded 25 New Zealand Scholarship passes. “These strong academic results demonstrate the College s value of excellence, and the positive relationships between students and our exceptional teachers, many of whom are recognised nationally and internationally as experts in their ®eld. They are our most important asset.” St Andrew s also has an outstanding co-curricular programme, with many students enjoying national recognition in sporting and cultural pursuits. “Our students leave us as con®dent young adults, who are resilient and better prepared for life in today s world,” says Christine.

CHRIST’S COLLEGE

GARTH WYNNE: Each boy at his best. It’s a simple message but one to which we at Christ’s College are unswervingly committed. We want all our students to undergo a personalised journey at Christ’s College, both in and outside the classroom, where health and wellbeing are paramount. We’re talking about the holistic development of young people. The complexities we are now facing in the modern world mean that we need to ensure our boys are armed with skills to be resilient and to be very certain of who they are. Garth Wynne: Executive Principal

• Garth Wynne is the Regional Vice-President of Aust/NZ and Director of the International Boys’ Schools Coalition (IBSC) • Director of the Association of the Heads of Independent Schools of New Zealand (AHIS) • A former Director of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA) and the former Chair of the Australian Boarding Schools Association

W

ellbeing and Positive Education are key influencers on all future programmes at Christ’s College. Integral to this is a three-year implementation that will see positive education embedded across the school, both inside and outside the classroom. We want to help the boys flourish by building resilience, grit and optimism. Our role is to give them as many tools as we can to manage life. It’s not about reducing stress, because stress isn’t going to go away. It’s about having the tools to manage the complex world in which we live. As part of the Wellbeing and Positive Education Programme, Christ’s College is introducing an innovative new programme for Year 10 students called Immerse & Inspire. By next year, the dynamic programme will see all Year 10 boys boarding for a month at Jacobs House at Christ’s College to immerse themselves in the project. This is part of the College experience and does not incur any additional fees. During the four weeks, the boys will take part in a wide and diverse range of activities aimed at: encouraging them to better understand themselves and their unique strengths and character; introducing the concepts of leadership, highlighting the power of giving and service to others; and fostering new friendships through the unique boarding experience. These programmes contribute to ongoing academic excellence at Christ’s College.

Give me the right foundation, and I’ll achieve greatness.

SCOTT THELNING:

Scott Thelning: Principal

It makes me feel old when I say it out loud... I have been a principal for nearly half of my life! Being Christchurch born and bred, and after 3 principalships, I am very proud to lead Cathedral Grammar through its next exciting phase of development and growth. I enjoy living in the community of Mt Pleasant with my wife Andrea and three children, Jack, Issy and Will. We too are a busy family and enjoy all the sport, music and other activities that keep us active, balanced with pyjama, popcorn and movie days on a cold weekend! I have just completed an 8 week challenge at F45 Gym and very much enjoy the team based fun, motivation and results this provides. My next challenge is to maintain the progress – wish me luck!

C

athedral Grammar is a pre-school and school with a rich 136 year history delivering high quality education in the centre of our city. It is a school with a strong, Anglican ethos and spiritual heart that uniquely maximises the benefits of co-educational and separate gender education in the one school environment. While the world has changed beyond the imagining of our pioneers, the forward-looking principles of Cathedral Grammar remain as relevant today as they have ever been: to provide an exceptional personalised education that empowers our pupils to lead successful and fulfilling lives. Our Board has set a future focussed strategy and we are currently in the exciting phase of developing plans to ensure we anchor a forward thinking education within the illustrious history of the oldest established independent primary school in New Zealand. We aspire for our pupils to be engaged thinkers, moral citizens and to have enterprising spirits as they apply creative thought, think critically, problem solve, develop intellectual curiosity and an ability to challenge preconceptions.

In this knowledge era, original thought is important to us here at Cathedral Grammar. This requires the ability to think beyond, to adapt, to change and to innovate. Our strong academic traditions are important to us, and so too is every pupil reaching their full potential, building their self-confidence and making friends for life. Our challenge is to find the perfect balance as we prepare our pupils for life. Every pupil. Every day. We view the opportunity to educate other people’s children as a rare privilege, bringing with it a huge responsibility to provide the best all-round education possible. At Cathedral Grammar we take this responsibility extremely seriously. We care about the individual and pride ourselves on the warmth of a community in which all our pupils feel valued. This is, and will remain, a forward-thinking school that enthusiastically embraces innovation and new opportunity. We welcome you to join us on our exciting adventure.

MEDBURY SCHOOL

PETER KAY:

Peter Kay - Principal

“Innovation in education is about more than just technology shaping the future of teaching and learning in the classroom. It’s about how you can use the technology around students to empower them to become lifelong learners, who can adapt and rise to the challenges of change. Innovation in education involves constant collaboration across the teaching staff to ensure that lessons are real, relevant, stimulating, student centered and personalised. In the past, education was about teaching children knowledge, but now it’s about helping students develop the necessary skills to find their own way through an ever-changing and diverse world.”

M

r Peter Kay, is in his twelfth year as Headmaster at Medbury School, and this year, the teaching of innovation and digital technology are very much on his agenda. Mr Kay believes that fifty years ago, teachers expected that what was taught in the classroom, would last their students a lifetime. Today, schools need to prepare students for more rapid economic, technological and social changes than ever before, for jobs that have not yet been created, and to use technologies which have not yet been invented. Mr Kay believes that as a Headmaster, it important to ensure that his teaching staff become adept at using technology in a way to support new pedagogies, which focus on learners as active participants, with tools for inquiry-based learning and the ability to use collaborative workspaces. “Embracing technology provides a wonderful opportunity to enhance experiential learning, foster project-based and inquiry-based pedagogies, facilitate hands-on activities and cooperative learning, deliver formative real-time assessment, and support the personalised learning programmes we have at Medbury”. At the beginning of the 2017 academic year, Medbury opened a new Innovation Suite and a new Junior Technology Room, to introduce Digital Technology into the curriculum. The teaching of Digital Technology will be a compulsory requirement throughout all New Zealand schools in 2018, as stipulated by the Ministry of Education. These new learning spaces have

allowed boys to be creative and innovative by using 3-D printers, state-of-the-art recording and editing equipment, and a Green Screen. The Digital Technology Programme at Medbury also develops the boys’ skills when using animation, robotics and coding. However, Mr Kay states that the challenge Medbury has is to ensure that there is the right balance between the teaching of innovation and digital technology, whilst also embracing the traditional teaching of Literacy and Numeracy.

ST MARGARET’S COLLEGE

GILLIAN SIMPSON:

Gillian Simpson - Principal

As each girl journeys through St Margaret’s College, our wish for her is that she will grow and thrive surrounded by people who care about her well-being and academic achievement. No girl is open to new learning nor embracing new challenges and experiences if she is not happy. Here at St Margaret’s, when we talk about “happiness” we are referring to a state of deep well-being and personal awareness - the state of well-being that Maori call ‘hauora’ and that Aristotle called ‘eudaemonia’. We give less value to hedonic happiness which can be fleeting and superficial and yet so often all that is celebrated and portrayed in our lives, both real and virtual, as important for wellbeing. We welcome and support every girl as a unique and precious individual and we work in partnership with her whanau to ensure she flourishes during her time with us.”

M

aking that all important decision around schooling is one no parent takes lightly. With a personalised private tour around the school or a visit to Open Day, we will give you an insight into how St Margaret’s College offers a unique education for girls from Years 1 through to 13, with boarding from Year 7, with a strong emphasis on well-being and pastoral care. Programmes are customised to the specific learning needs of girls at every age and stage ensuring each girl reaches her full potential. Our girls are given every opportunity to flourish and to be prepared for success in an ever-changing world. Most importantly, our pastoral care and spiritualitybased programmes build resilient young people who relate well, and who have the confidence and empathy to build meaningful and lasting relationships. Independent research shows both boys and girls achieve higher academic success in single sex schools. We are proud of our girls’ achievements in the 2016 academic results with 100% pass rate in International Baccalaureate and NCEA Level 1, plus 98.9% at Level 2 and 96.6% at Level 3. MEET THE PRINCIPAL 2017:

SELWYN HOUSE SCHOOL

DR LYN BIRD: One of my life long aims, as a principal, is to ensure all students are equipped with knowledge, skills and attitudes for their future lives and careers. We have all heard versions of the following statements:

The reality is if you have a child starting school this year, two thirds of the kids in their class will end up doing jobs that don’t quite exist yet. Thanks to advancements in technology up to 65 percent of children entering primary school today will end up working in completely new job types. Dr Lyn Bird - Principal

So, what are those key skills and attitudes?

The World Economic Forum’s Human Capital Report (2016) and their New Vision for Education Report provide a comprehensive picture of the global workforce and tell us: • most new jobs will have a technology component to them • what will increasingly be needed is good training in basic technology competence, asking the right questions, critical thinking, analysing concepts and leading a purposeful life • creativity, collaboration and non-cognitive skills will be key • knowledge of traditional arts and humanities subjects is highly relevant to this, making obsolete past notions of a dichotomy between humanities and sciences It is predicted that 5 million jobs will be lost before 2020 as artificial intelligence, robotics, nanotechnology and other socioeconomic factors replace the need for human workers. The reports point out that skills we develop in our pre-school students today will be valued highly in the future. The Selwyn House Pre-school classrooms are future proofing our students as they learn social skills such as empathy, cooperation, sharing, and negotiating, all essential skills and attitudes needed for the work environment of the future. Selwyn House is proud to offer the International Baccalaureate, Primary Years Programme (PYP), which is recognised globally as a future focused curriculum based on intercultural understanding and respect. In effect, the PYP learner profile attributes we develop embody a future global citizen of the world.

Along with those soft skills, the World Economic Forum also tells us that mathematical and computer science abilities will be enormously beneficial. At Selwyn House core learning in english, mathematics and computer science is complemented by trans-disciplinary rich tasks and inquiries, which allow high levels of application, creativity and problem solving. The development of these skills combined with crucial interpersonal skills will enable Selwyn House girls to be well equipped for the work force of the future. We invite you to visit Selwyn House School and Pre-school on the 15 May and experience our future focused learning environments.

A LEADING LAW FIRM COMES HOME When it was forced out of the Christchurch CBD by the February 2011 earthquake, the Cavell Leitch partnership made a commitment to return.

m

s part of its drive to positively contribute to the regeneration of the central city, Cavell Leitch has recently moved into new premises in the BNZ Centre on Cashel Mall. It is a calm, sophisticated space, just as you would expect of the home of one of New Zealand’s leading law firms. There are comfortable waiting areas to welcome clients, complimentary coffees and discreet meeting spaces, as well as, importantly for the central city, secure offstreet client parking. At the recent opening of the new offices, Managing Partner Julian Clarke outlined a five-point mission statement of goals intended to build upon the award-winning culture and service standards that have underpinned the prestigious South Island firm for nearly one hundred years. Central to that is a dedicated team of

legal experts who each specialise in their respective fields. Cavell Leitch comprises nine expert teams with specific knowledge areas to support their client needs - from Agribusiness, through Insurance Litigation, to Workplace Health and Safety. It is a holistic approach. “We don’t just say ‘here is the law’. Our people enjoy building relationships with clients, working alongside them and being a part of helping clients to achieve their goals. Then you get to share in the excitement when your client succeeds. It’s actively working with someone rather than just for someone,” Clarke says. That is the ethos every member of Cavell Leitch’s team brings to their role, alongside an absolute commitment to delivering great results.

VIBES

In honour of velvet’s inspiring return, we’ve compiled a ‘shop the look collection’

By Kate Pierson

Ah yes, the nineties – the era of deep berry lips, choker necklaces, Doc Martens and iridescent makeup.

I

f you’ve been feeling nostalgic and pining for a comeback of these fashionable hallmarks, we’re thrilled to let you know this epic epoch is once again being celebrated for its exports. If you were savvy enough to save some of your velvet pieces, you’ll be pleased to know the trend has been resurrected by the powers that be, and that any luxurious classics you relegated to the back of the wardrobe long ago should be resuscitated with some TLC (brush and steam) and reintroduced to your style portfolio. Velvet can be a tricky little number to keep in tip-top shape. Quick-fire recommendations include dry-cleaning (it’s always a good idea with sensitive fabrics); avoid the iron (it can ruin the ‘pile’, the tiny fibres in velvet); try natural stain removers (allegedly baking soda and lemon juice are a powerful combination, but always patch test the remedy first). In honour of velvet’s inspiring return, we’ve compiled a ‘shop the look collection’ which would make even the harshest critic weak at the knees.

Embellish me: This is the season to turn up the bling. Jackets are being encrusted, embroidered and bedazzled like works of art. If you were ever a closet embroiderer – let this be your coming-out party. Raid your children’s cupboards, and layer up the badges with your mother’s finest to create some serious jacket attitude. Brighten up your lipstick: Head to the cosmetics counter in search of red and fuchsia shades. Blue-based reds work best with black. To prevent lipstick bleeding, apply a waxy red pencil over the whole lip. My new go-to lipstick for everyday is Lancôme Rouge Absolu Lipstick in Rose. This cream based formula won’t dry out your lips and is easy to wear. Add gold or silver accents: Choose your metals and match them accordingly – golds, especially, come in many different shades, so keep within your metallic limits. Avoid styling brassy golds with champagne golds etc. A stylish silver or gold belt on an all-black outfit will pull you together in an instant. And do hold on to your good belts - even if they go out of style momentarily, they will almost always come back into fashion. Spend the money on good quality leather belts and you will have them for decades. Make a statement with bright reading glasses: The perfect pair can add so much personality to your look, you would be forgiven for wanting a library of them to create a different mood for every day. Have fun with your frames and choose the quirkiest pair that your confidence allows you. If in doubt, think of 90+ year old Iris Apfel, the New York socialite whose incredible look is now defined by her magnificent large, round glasses.

5.

Develop a wardrobe of scarves: Like coats, buy the highest quality you can afford. Avoid acrylic scarves at all costs. Go for wool, silk, cashmere, or a mix of these. Acrylic won’t keep you warm at night and doesn’t drape as well. Consider matching your scarf exactly to a coloured coat – it makes the look complete, especially when worn with an all-black outfit.

6.

Join the navy: You will have noticed shades of navy and indigo creeping their way back into fashion. After years of being the ‘conservative’ colour, navy is making a stylish comeback. Softer against the skin than black, it comes with added benefits as we age. The only clunker is that it requires a complete wardrobe shift. No matter what anyone tells you – navy and black do not belong together. Navy clothes require navy, tan, chocolate or coloured accessories. So once you cross that bridge into the world of navy – so too will your handbags, scarves and shoes. www.magpiestyle.co.nz

TRANSPARENT TIMELESS

LUXURY FASHION

This week is Fashion Revolution Week, a global movement calling for greater transparency in the fashion industry in an attempt to make it fairer, cleaner and safer. It marks the fourth anniversary of the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh where 1,138 clothing workers were killed and many more injured.

e thought it was fitting to profile Untouched World, a local fashion brand that continues to be recognised by the United Nations for their efforts in sustainability. Taking a peek into their workrooms adjoining their flagship store and café, it’s clear to see their garments are made with a whole lot of passion, care and pride. We’re told “quality and sustainability” are “non-negotiables” and the exquisite garments hanging in the retail store are a testament to this. Specialists in knitwear, the new Untouched World Winter Collection can’t help but instantly impress. From soft machine washable merino tops and stylish woollen pants, to luxurious cashmere/possum blend pieces that offer an exceptional handle without any pilling, their designs are timeless with a modern edge. Their new wind and water resistant Airewool tops and jackets are a standout, a beautiful merger of cosy and chic. The collection sums up their less-is-more aesthetic and the Untouched World ethos that ‘you don’t have to give up luxury and great design to be good to the planet’. Designed to be easy care and comfortable to wear, their clothes have the added feel good factor of giving back to the community. A percentage of profits goes to the Untouched World Charitable Trust which runs sustainability leadership programmes for young people. See their latest collection in store at 155 Roydvale Avenue, Re:START or shop online at www.untouchedworld.co.nz.

The new-look store offers a funky aesthetic with ply lining the walls and edgy exposed brick in the mix. “It was always Jamie’s dream to own a skate shop,” Jess reveals. “Jamie looks after the skate and men’s side of things, while my forte is in women’s fashion and social media. COLORECTAL CANCER DOESN’T DISCRIMINATE The work of Christchurch Colorectal, a medical pioneer and leader in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal diseases, has never been more important to New Zealanders.

ANY SYMPTOMS SUCH AS A CHANGE IN BOWEL HABITS, RECTAL BLEEDING, AND UNEXPLAINED LOSS OF WEIGHT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED.

that 20 percent of cancers (1 in 5) that were picked up by pilot screening will not be picked up in the national screening. This fact is being conveniently ignored. “From our perspective, a screening programme is better than no screening programme, but we would have preferred the original 50-74 year old target group. This data just reinforces what we are missing out by increasing the screening age. We will miss a large portion of cancers which are eminently treatable if found early.” While the incidence of cases continues to increase, with a number of conspiracy theories in the mix as to why, Sharma says in reality it is probably a combination of environmental factors, genetics and obesity. “We are getting better at picking up familial cancers. We are recognising and screening for certain types of familial bowel cancers and getting better at treating these. “However, Christchurch Colorectal’s take home message is consistent – be vigilant. Any symptoms such as a change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, and unexplained loss of weight should be investigated.” Younger people should be aware that bowel cancer can affect them. The tendency in younger people is to attribute symptoms to benign outlet bleeding (i.e. haemorrhoids). “We want to increase awareness among young people, and tell them to seek medical attention, rather than ignoring it.” For more information regarding services visit www.christchurchcolorectal.co.nz.

anager of the E-Nails boutique at 180a Papanui Road, Merivale, Catee Wang, is happy to take the job of looking after clients seriously. “I think sometimes our clients might not realise all the nail-care options available to them. That’s why we like to model a few interesting looks and techniques,” she adds. “For instance, I am about to change my differently coloured pastel nails to black and white, studded by tiny jewelled hardware sitting

atop each one.” Catee enthusiastically showcases the nail art ‘jewellery’ which arrived in the salon yesterday. The metallic pieces are held on by a further layer of gel to stay put, she says. She would love to get the message out there that you don’t need long or perfected nails before arriving for your manicure or pedicure. Her team of seven staff can deal with short, bitten nails by using tip or extension options available in acrylic. And because acrylic is a gloriously tough finish, it can certainly help kick the biting habit. Autumn is a great pedicure-time, Catee believes. Certainly it’s when we have to be most flexible with footwear - open-toed sandals at lunchtime, with boots morning and evening. A pedicure with the salon’s new strengthening gel meets both challenges. It looks wonderful. And it dries so fast that covered-in shoes are fine to don straight afterward.

BIKER BABES By Kate Pierson

Put pedal to the metal on that metaphorical Harley Davidson and channel your inner biker chic!

T

his fierce but feminine aesthetic was pioneered by the ultimate biker babe Marianne Faithfull in The Girl on a Motorcycle, and modern muses like Gwen Stefani, Rihanna and Miley Cyrus have continued to rally in its favour. From the high fashion collections of Phillip Lim, to the high street hangers of giants like Top Shop, the biker look is recycled season-after season with plenty of reasons to wax lyrical about its staying power. A way to fake it until you make it into the ‘Cool Club’, biker chic will suffer fashion fools gladly, unlike other styles that show no mercy to the fashionably challenged – I’m speaking from experience. A hybrid of what’s functional and effortlessly fashionable, the style transports you to a place where comfort reigns supreme without losing any street cred. All hail biker chic! Let’s celebrate with a shop the look. Go on, you know you want to.

M

illennials — widely recognised as those born between 1980 and the early 2000s — who grew up under the watchful gaze of ‘helicopter’ mums and dads are no different. While their Generation X parents planned their university educations while they were still in nappies, enrolled them in numerous enrichment programmes from birth, and micro-managed every aspect of their lives, millennial parents are re-writing the parenting rules. It’s the generation that has been labelled as lazy, entitled narcissists, and the most high maintenance workforce in the history of the world. But rather than running a tight schedule of naps, meals and play dates, the latest research shows millennial

parents are approaching parenting in a whole new way; adopting a new style of parenting that’s more relaxed and encourages greater independence. Recognising there is no one ‘right’ way to raise their children, millennials are employing a wide range of child-raising philosophies, seeing a happy median between baby-wearing, organic-puree-making mums and free-range parents who don’t believe in boundaries. They want to be more involved than baby boomers, while hovering less than the helicopter parents of Gen X, with plans of raising a new generation that is more democratic, more inclusive and more empowered. That sounds pretty good to us.

A WARMING MOTHER’S DAY GIFT IS A POSSUM MERINO NECK WARMER OR PAIR OF GLOVES.

SNUGGLE UP IN STYLE Emma’s at Oxford has recently doubled in size as it approaches a 10-year anniversary milestone in North Canterbury’s charming township.

ith more room for owner Emma Gillard’s well-chosen items, she has extended the clothing range to include plenty of gorgeous winter layering pieces. Untouched World’s high-quality merino and possum exquisite designs include the latest multi-purpose ponchos and shoulder wraps. “We now have a dressing room, for trying on the clothing,” Emma says. “This season’s timeless pieces include striking sea greens, teals and blues, in addition to traditional colours, and we offer free shipping around New Zealand on merino garments.” A warming Mother’s Day gift is a possum merino neck warmer or pair of gloves. The Kate Watts fine, soft-merino, fingerless gloves are a practical necessity, in colours and designs to match every outfit. For book-lovers, Emma’s is also a literary haven, and now, after a decade, it has the luxury of extra shelves to display the eclectic range of genres, from best-selling novels to floristry and gardening books - and the adult spoof Ladybird and Enid Blyton books make an entertaining gift to giggle over. “Now we’re the best ‘not-solittle’ book shop in Canterbury.” With other treasures to choose from, gift vouchers are a thoughtful idea too. For Mother’s Day, Emma suggests doing what she and her mother often enjoyed – a ‘MAD’ (Mother and Daughter) day out – with lunch and boutique shopping in Oxford on a beautiful, crisp Autumn day. fter 14 years, it was time for a change,” says owner Sharon Kennedy, who’s taken her business in a new direction, concentrating on quality designer clothing and an eclectic range of accessories and giftware. Although, it’s hard to believe her shop has actually downsized, with such a wonderful selection. Iconic Australian fashion labels are the boutique’s show pieces, and Sharon has chosen a flattering timeless range this season, from Threadz, Clarity, Holmes and Fallon, Vivid, Virtu and Gordon Smith - and also the feminine, Canadiandesigned Piccadilly. Ponchos, now a practical, stylish wardrobe staple, range from $35 through to the luxuriously fine lambs’ wool of Otago’s knitwear label, Exquisite. Handbag labels include Milleni, Pellini, Cellini, Serenade, Ilex London and Morrissey, and come in the essential blackleather handbag through to chic, patent leather floral prints. There’ll be one to fall in love with - and a wallet to match. From top to toe, there’s a fanciful selection of hats for dressing up or winter warmth, fingerless merino gloves, pantihose, leggings, cosy Lothlorian possum merino socks and adorable Slumbie slippers. As the boutique’s finishing touch, glittering jewellery pieces adorn the counter tops to complete a new outfit. They make lovely gifts for all ages, as does the lovely giftware collection. It seems the more you look around, the more you see – and for Mother’s Day, it’s impossible not to find something she’ll love here. Managers Emma Browning and Tony Reid are delighted and say they couldn’t have done it without their amazing staff, including assistant managers Steve and Toni. “This is a huge coup for us – we’ve beaten some very well-known hotels and to know the rankings are from customer reviews is pretty special.” Emma and Tony took over management of the lodge two years ago. They credit their success, exceeding all of their customers’ expectations, by offering both superior product and service. “Our rooms look great and are super comfortable. But that’s not enough – we have to ensure they are always presented and cleaned to a high standard. We also go out of our way to do all we can for our customers.” That attentive service has won loyalty. “We often have people who will not only come back, they’ll ask for the same room. Likewise, we’ve had people come for the weekend who’ve then rung us on Monday to book a conference for their workplace,” says Emma. Emma and Tony say there has also been huge growth in the number of conferences, meetings and weddings held at Hot Springs. “Hanmer Springs is the perfect destination for events – we’re well located, offer a quiet environment with sublime scenery. The village, also, has all of the necessities for any event and is super handy to Christchurch.” For more information visit www.hotspringsmotorlodge.co.nz

hile there is no Wedding Scripture that officially sanctions the following, your Big Day can be preceded or followed by as many bridal related events as you like. From the traditional affairs like the engagement party, hens do and honeymoon, to the less common soirees, such as the bridal shower and the post-wedding parties, your wardrobe can benefit greatly from all of the above. We’re probably in for a royal telling off from your significant other, as the additional festivities can come with an eye-watering price tag, but frankly, all of the pretty accessories on offer make it absolutely worth it. Sometimes I get sent product that inspires the ‘Mad Scientist’ in me and I get the urge to play.

package arrived with Fresh as freeze dried raspberries, plum powder, plum slices and passion fruit powder. These are sachets of freeze dried ingredients that can be stored and used whenever you’re in the mood for that fruity flavour. There were a lot of recipes for some off-the-chart desserts which looked absolutely fabulous, but as always, I

resorted to picking the best cocktail recipes. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the powders and how they really added a great flavour to the drink. I thought there was no better opportunity to have a delicious cocktail than before heading to see Showbiz Christchurch’s Priscilla at the Isaac theatre Royal. My experience was fabulous and I want to share it with you…

veryone gets to know each other and they often end up sitting at the same table,” says owner/manager Stu McDougall. Light and airy, with polished-concrete flooring, Purple Weka Café and Bar is as cosy as it is spacious. Stu’s Grandma’s heirlooms grace the china cabinet and her oval gilded mirrors adorn the back wall, while the wheels of Grandad’s bicycle form the word ‘food’ behind the counter. Having always embraced hospitality with a capital H, Stu owned the adorable Dorothy’s in Latimer Square for a spell - which equally felt like dining in someone’s home. Grandma would be proud of the hearty soups made daily, such as old-fashioned home-style vegetable, chicken and sweet corn or creamy chunky mushroom to warm the cockles. Creamy mushrooms are also piled on ciabatta bread as part of the delicious all-day breakfast menu or, as one of the homemade cabinet offerings, paired with crispy bacon as a toastie. The Blue Cod is also delicious, with a wine or beer. Opening early, it makes a fantastic start to the working day, but also a convivial lounge in the weekend for a relaxing breakfast, lunch or barista-perfect double-shot Hummingbird coffee and muffin, like strawberry and custard or with homemade lemon curd oozing out its centre. The Purple Weka Café and Bar, 48 Fitzgerald Ave, opens 6am-4pm MondayFriday, and 8am-3pm Saturday and Sunday with plenty of parking. Phone 366 0258 or visit www.purplewekacafe.co.nz

or generations, it has evoked memories of childhood and family. As the cooler weather sets in, Freemans’ own tradition of the classic Sunday roast, with a dessert such as apple crumble or sticky date, is a wonderful opportunity to while away a wintery Sunday with loved ones. On a busy corner of London Street in Lyttelton, Freemans has served the port town loyally for eleven years. Co-owner Sarah Freeman says, “That is the heart of our business. We have a very strong connection with our customers and community. For us, Freemans is more than just food.” She and co-owner, husband Nick, pride themselves in making people feel welcome. It is a warm, relaxed place with subtle lighting and a fireplace burning. It is well known for its pizza and pasta meals, but also offers an extensive menu to cater to all tastes, including salads, starters to share, and house specials of lamb, chicken and beef. There is outdoor dining on The Deck, which has views of the town and harbour, and is covered and heated in cold weather. The Deck can also be used for private functions. The team at Freemans is friendly and knows its stuff. The team members are the key to the establishment’s longevity. Whether it’s breakfast (Saturday only), lunch (Saturday and Sunday only) or dinner (Wednesday to Sunday from 3pm until late), Freemans offers great food in a cosy environment. Check the website www.freemansdiningroom.co.nz and the Facebook page for details of the Sunday roast and the full menu.

Autumn Winter menus released

A PLANT BASED

WHOLE FOODS PIONEER

Budding wellness entrepreneur, Lauren Glucina, is the author of wellness website Ascension Kitchen, and she is pioneering plant-based whole foods one delicious menu at a time.

H

er current mission is to make kindness cool with her new innovative range of raw food frozen desserts, called ‘LIVELY Desserts’ – the inspiration for this issue’s cover. Determined to take plant-powered food to the masses and revolutionise the frozen food aisle, Lauren is a qualified naturopath and herbalist. Once upon a time, Lauren was up against the all-too-familiar grind of the corporate world. Seeking a career change, a redundancy offered a silver lining, funding a two-month stint in Bali, where she formally trained as a Raw Foods Chef. She returned to New Zealand shortly after, retraining with various institutes, to gain a Bachelor of Natural Medicine with Excellence in Clinical Practice. Lauren then launched Ascension Kitchen, posting healthy raw foods recipes and videos, and documenting her own healing of severe adrenal fatigue through whole foods. Her guiding philosophy throughout was to get back to nature, turn to food first as medicine, and be kind to yourself. Lauren’s curiosity and ambitions also revealed a gap in the market for a premium frozen dessert. As she had seen her own health transform using plant-foods as medicine, she was frustrated that there was commercially nothing on offer that fit her philosophy on health and compassionate eating. There was nothing that provided a wholesome alternative to those laden with cane sugar, common allergens and E numbers, and certainly nothing that catered to the growing vegetarian and vegan markets. Thus the idea for LIVELY Desserts was born! Check out the delicious cover cake recipe at https://ascensionkitchen.com/healthy-vegan-ginger-cake/

It may be a little early but it really does feel like winter is nearly upon us. The lead up to Easter weekend certainly spurred a few log burners and heat pumps into action prematurely, and when Canterbury temperatures start to drop, you can be guaranteed to find a warm and cosy spot at The Villas to relax and indulge in something from its recently released Autumn/Winter menus. Choose to drop in in the evening and you’ll find a varied selection of mains to choose from.

I

f you’re looking for something light, then the Pear, Caramelised Onion & Blue Cheese Mille Feuille is a delicious vegetarian option. It’s a savoury take on the classic French pastry Napoleon dessert slice, but served with beetroot relish & crème fraiche. Complement the complex blue cheese flavour with a Riesling or maybe a Sauvignon Blanc. If you are looking for something a little more meaty, then you shouldn’t pass up the Crispy Free Range Pork Belly. Cooked to perfection with delicious crackling and served on cabbage, bacon and butter beans, with pan jus, this dish will not disappoint. If you’re looking for something light, there’s a great selection of starters and bar snacks to nibble on while sampling the extensive range of wines and craft beers. It’s always best to book, so call ahead to guarantee your table near the fire. There are new options on the breakfast and lunch menus as well, so any time you feel the need to beat the early winter blues, The Villas has something on the menu to tease and delight your taste buds.

Try something new.

This has to be the ultimate gluten free quiche – a light, millet and sunflower seed crust packed full of nutrient dense greens (and wild edible weeds from the garden if you’re so inclined!), finished with crunchy seeds and soft juicy tomatoes. Naturally egg and dairy free, so perfect for those with sensitivities. I served this with a mess of fresh sunflower seed sprouts and a generous few tablespoons of gut-friendly raw sauerkraut.

GLUTEN FREE SUN-DRIED TOMATO AND SPINACH QUICHE Crust: ¾ cup millet flour (blend whole millet to make your own) ½ cup sunflower seed flour (blend whole sunflower seeds to make your own) 2 tablespoons psyllium husks ½ teaspoon coarse sea salt ½ cup water 2 tablespoons olive oil Pre-heat oven – 200˚C (390˚F). Combine all ingredients in a large bowl until a sticky dough forms. Set aside for at least ten minutes to let the dough firm up. Meanwhile, lightly oil a spring form pie

dish and dust lightly with flour (I use rice flour). Lay a sheet of baking paper over the kitchen counter, then place dough in centre. Place a second sheet over the top and use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a thin, even circle the size of your pie dish. Peel the top layer off, then carefully manoeuvre the dough into the pie dish. Press the dough into the creases of the base but leave the edges as they are (scalloped) rather than pressing them firmly into the sides (easier to remove this way – plus looks nice and rustic). Bake for a maximum of 10 minutes then remove and set aside.

Prep the rest of the ingredients: peel and finely slice onion, peel and mince the garlic, top and tail then grate the zucchini – then wrap in paper towels and squeeze the moisture out, clean out the capsicum and slice finely, and drain off extra oil from the semi-dried tomatoes.

Pour batter into the prepared pie dish, then press in the semi-dried tomatoes and halved cherry tomatoes. Cover with tin foil and bake at 200˚C (390˚F) for 25 minutes. Remove foil, turn down heat to 180˚ (356˚F) and bake for another 20 minutes or till the surface has turned golden. Check in on it to make sure the crust doesn’t burn (you may have to turn the heat down).

Heat olive oil in a frying pan, and sauté onion till golden, set aside in a large mixing bowl. Cook the capsicum till soft then add to the bowl. Add greens

To serve, sprinkle toasted seeds over the top. We enjoyed a large slice with a side of sauerkraut and a big handful of fresh sunflower sprouts.

MINIMALISM

MATTERS By Kate Pierson

HANDKRAFTED

It was the work of sculptors Robert Morris and Donald Judd in the mid-60s that gave rise to minimalism.

BLOOM & CO 68 April 27, 2017 Metropol

ot a naturally monogamous concept, minimalism has enjoyed relationships with a number of creative genres, from art through to design and architecture. While time has worked its magic on minimalism, introducing new colours, patterns and penchants for the aesthetic, the virtues have remained the same - clean, simple lines; spacious and light rooms; simplicity of design and decoration. The antithesis of clutter! The minimalist home is kind to the eye and to the bank balance, focusing on what is fundamental and functional. If you are keen to experiment, the governing principal you should have in mind when embarking on the interior design journey, is that less truly is more. If you purchase statement pieces for your space, let the furniture or accents accompanying these pieces take more of a backseat. You won’t have a successful minimalist style space if you have too many star players competing for the limelight. Let this minimalism themed mood board inspire your palette – from colours and fabrics to furniture lines.

PERFECTING FIRST APPEARANCES A low maintenance alternative to timber fencing that is smart, robust and cost effective. That’s what we have come to expect of the PVC modular fencing system from Paragon Fencing. Now the company has added a new product to its range - a modular trellis system made from the same extremely durable material.

“J

ust like the fencing system the trellis will not deteriorate, warp, crack or twist“, say the team at Paragon Fencing. “It’s a good alternative to timber trellis and comes in a range of standard sizes – 600, 900, 1200, 1500, 1800 millimetres in width and 1.8m high. But of course we can custom make any size as we manufacture the product in Canterbury. “ The trellis has a range of applications and can be used for screening around patios or decking, or to add height to an existing fence where more privacy is required. “It is also very suitable to use in gardens for training or espaliering plants.

Because the trellis is pre-finished there is no painting after installation and it will maintain its fresh and clean good looks year after year.” Paragon Fencing has a good supply of the new trellis in stock. With winter fast approaching, Cantabrians are looking to awardwinning Kiwala Interiors to help them bunker down and beautify their homes at the same time.

W

hile enabling a fresh aesthetic and a chance to ensure families stay warm and dry during the colder temperatures, it’s par for the chilly course to look at what we’re doing to insulate and weatherproof our homes. The company, which has just been named Aspect Shutters national sales award winner, has an enviable reputation in the residential market, heightened by founder/ operator Kim Gavin’s professional prowess in the world of design. Kiwala’s range of interior shutters are a flattering fixture for any home, she says, as well as being very effective in reducing heat loss through windows. “When installed with a tight-fitting frame, the shutters help save money, thanks to

lower energy bills, while creating a warmer, healthier and more comfortable home.” Before winter sets in, now is the ideal time to visit Kiwala and discuss your options. “Studies show window glazing is often the weakest link when it comes to winter heat loss – between 21 and 30 per cent of heat loss is through windows,” Kim says. “As the heat reaches the window, it cools, falls to the floor, then creates a cold draught as the air circulates back into the room. Apart from well-lined drapes, a tightfitting window cover reduces heat loss by trapping a layer of insulating air between the window and the room.” For the best of both worlds, the shutter range is also designed to keep the heat out in summer. You don’t need to be Martha Stewart personified to get wild with your walls.

SANDBERG WALLPAPER

W

hile you don’t need to be Martha Stewart personified to get wild with your walls, there are some key pointers that will help you on your way. Namely, the types of wallpaper, of which there are three: pre-pasted paper (requires soaking in a trough to activate the paste before it is hung); unpasted paper (applying paste to the paper with a brush or pasting machine); and pasting the wall (paste is put on the wall instead of the paper. This makes it a breeze to hang and remove because it peels off in one piece). Tools and preparation will vary, dependent on what method you employ, but there are some helpful tips we can

offer when it comes to selecting the best paper for your abode. While standard papers are cost-effective and generally straightforward when it comes to hanging them, foils are fabulous for statement walls or rooms with very little light. Their downfall is that they can pick up imperfections on your walls, so a flaw-free canvas is ideal. Flocked paper offers an elegant vibe with raised, velvety patterns, while vinyls are a great ‘starters’ version of wallpaper because they are easy to apply, durable, and easy to clean and remove. Google is teeming with helpful tips and inspiration, so let your fingers do the walking first.

A LONG-STANDING

PROFESSIONAL LEGACY

Plumbing may not be terribly exciting to most, but when the toilet, or a hot water cylinder is leaking, it is reassuring to know there are experienced professionals who are passionate about plumbing available to fix it.

L

ayne Watson Plumbing Limited is a plumbing and gas-fitting service that has operated in Canterbury for fourteen years. It has a team of great employees, long-serving qualified plumbers with many years of experience, and apprentices training to be the next generation of professionals. Layne Watson and his wife Emma’s company has steadily grown and evolved, embracing the latest technology, such as apps to manage costing and to monitor health and safety concerns, and GPS navigation systems to ensure call-outs and staffing are managed efficiently, getting plumbers to jobs as quickly as possible. All of Layne Watson’s plumbers are Site Safe trained and licensed by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers’ Board (PGDB). A recent television advertising

campaign reminded consumers that not all tradespeople are sufficiently qualified to be responsible for the safety of your home and, more importantly, your family. The PGDB issues practising licenses and ID cards only to qualified tradespeople, offering peace of mind that work is done by experienced, competent people. Layne Watson Plumbing’s qualified tradespeople are all registered and well able to carry out the work they do. The company has also been an active member of the Canterbury Master Plumbers Association since 2005. Whether for maintenance work on a house, or as contractors on building projects, customers can be assured they are choosing a reliable, reputable plumbing firm. Being part of a large multi-national company is a huge responsibility at times. If you feel detached, you can easily get lost due to the sheer size of a big business. If the parent company provides a sense of vision and a set of values, however, the connection becomes both easier and more authentic. We find ourselves in this space as a local business. We’ve distilled our parent company’s beliefs to include our own vision and set of guiding values, and although they mirror those of a large brand, we’ve adjusted them so they reflect our own unique nuances. I know, in fact I can almost hear the yawns now. It’s so easy to be cynical about a vision or a company mission statement or any of the many seemingly ‘new age’ taglines that sit around business, but when it’s real, it feels right. And, so it is with us. It’s taken a really long time to consolidate a vision that incorporates our desire to be the best realtors in New Zealand; adding value (tangible and intangible) to our clients and to the lives of the people who make up our team. (Thank you so much, Gilbert Enoka.) Not just their working lives, but the lives they envisaged achieving when they joined us, with all those associated dreams and hopes. Business is not easy and it doesn’t get easier with the years, but

every day I get up on a mission to do my best. I’d rather race to any given finish line than crawl to the start, and knowing we’ve got a reason and a vision as a company to propel us forward makes it all the more special. What’s your vision? What do you stand for? I know the answers to these questions and, to anyone in business, so should you.

WHERE CREATIVITY MEETS CRAFTSMANSHIP “It certainly keeps us all thinking.” Murray Hewitt, master joiner, is referring to the various conundrums he and his team of joiners and cabinetmakers are often presented with to turn designers’ ideas into finished products.

American White Ash, inset with aged brass rails stained with a clear top coat. Once again, we ended up with happy customers who have now ordered some leaners to add to the bar’s furniture.” Another commercial project was the fit out of a brand new café for Allwood Trees, which involved making kitchen joinery, a servery/bar, a separate counter for the coffee machine and a number of table tops. “I did all the designs myself for these pieces, and we completed the whole project in only three weeks, as there was a very tight timeframe set.” Commercial projects like these make up about 30 percent of Murray Hewitt Joinery’s work. “It’s good to have the variety of commercial and residential work. It means we always have something on the go and don’t have much downtime. We’re old-school joiners who are able to be versatile and put our minds and skill to any project.” Murray Hewitt Joinery is located at 25A Lunns Road. Phone (03) 343 0360 or email info@mhj.co.nz. Successful tile design TOP TIPS FOR

Tap into Naturally Tiles’ wealth of knowledge and years of experience, with these top tips for successful tile design to help you create beautiful spaces:

1. 2. 3.

When creating your tile design, take into account the age and style of your home to create the best effect.

Consider the size of the tile that will best fit your space. Ultimately this will impact your overall aesthetic (e.g. large tiles in a small space or vice versa).

Tile finishes vary and there are often recommendations and rules around the finishes of tiles you use. Consider which finish works best for your area and lifestyle.

4. 5. 6.

Grout lines can visually make a big difference in your finished result. Some tiles look better with minimal lines and others larger lines. Discuss with your designer or tiler the colour and width. For the best result, ensure you have a credible, recommended tiler.

There is often a lead-in time when ordering Italian tiles, so consult experts at Naturally Tiles early in your planning and design stages.

7. 8. 9.

When deciding on your tiles, put some thought into whether you want your tiles to be a feature and a statement, or if you want to perfectly blend your looks together cohesively. If you are combining different tiles together, check the sizes of each and whether they will line up perfectly, or if you will need another design idea to offset the layout of your tiles. Above all else, we appreciate that tiles have wonderful longevity and it’s vital to get them right. We are tile and design professionals – get in touch for great advice!

TURNING DREAMS INTO REALITY Imagine being able to repaint your kitchen - or nearly any other item in your house - in a colour to match an otherwise obscure object, such as a pen, or a leaf. At M.F. Turnbull, that is the kind of request, and challenge, to which the team likes to rise!

M

urray and Monique Turnbull, husband and wife team, have co-owned their specialist spray finishing business for nearly thirty years. It is a family business; a tight knit team of specialist finishers of new and refurbished kitchens and joinery.

Kitchens, however, are not all that can be given new life with new colours and a spectacular finish. “Bring in something old and we will make it look like new,” Murray says. With a commitment to the environment, M.F. Turnbull’s belief in the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ model means instead of throwing out or selling items of furniture that no longer fit your décor, they can be refurbished and reused for many more years. They can also be refurbished again in the future. Doors, internal and external; kitchen and laundry cabinetry and shelves; indoor and outdoor furniture; wooden bar stools; bedroom furniture; sideboards; dining room tables and chairs - these, and more, can be repainted in nearly any colour desired with a satin, semi-gloss or full-gloss finish. Old wooden furniture can be restained to look new, and new wood can be ‘distressed’ to look old and chic. The M.F. Turnbull team offers consultations, expert advice, and a fast, efficient service. It can work with any surface and any colour. As Murray is fond of saying, M.F. Turnbull can turn your dream into reality. EXPECTING SPRING Spring just wouldn’t be spring without the daffodils and tulips. Now is the perfect time to plant, with the current moist, warm soil giving bulbs the best possible start.

The general rule for planting depths is ‘the bigger the bulb the further down you plant it’.

T

erra Viva has its most extensive bulb range in midautumn, and amongst the stars of spring, you’ll find daffodils (including doubles, miniatures, and scented), tulips, bluebells, anemones, ranunculas, scented hyacinths (scented, grape) and freesias. Spring bulbs love good quality soft-ish soil, allowing roots to develop quickly; good light; and feeding twice a year - once, as the growing tips of the plants appear, and once, when flowering has finished and the bulbs are making reserves for the summer dormant season. This is why you don’t cut the foliage down until it’s completely died off. Thinking about space-saving spring displays, the current trend is multiplanting of varieties in one pot - 32 bulbs can be planted in a 15 litre pot to give you an extended flowering season. This is very easy to do, and all you need is good quality bulb planting mix. The general rule for planting depths is ‘the bigger the bulb, the further down you plant it’, and vice versa. So start with daffodils and scented hyacinths at 8–10cm, followed by tulips at 5–7cm, mini daffodils at 5-6cm, with grape hyacinths, anemones, and ranunculas on the top layer at 3-5cm. You can even put lilies right at the bottom for summer scent. Feed with controlled-release or liquid fertiliser and let the plants do the rest.

It becomes invisible. “But that’s the way it’s supposed to be and that’s the way we like it,” says Paul Lally, owner of Broomfield Quality Stoppers. “Proper workmanship by plasterers should present a flawless surface for the painters who come after us. Our job is to keep the painters happy.” Paul came to plastering after immigrating to New Zealand from Ireland and searching for a trade to give him job satisfaction. “I used wedding present money to pay for a gib stopping course and I haven’t looked back since!” Since he set up his plastering business in 1994, Paul and his qualified and experienced team have plastered many award-winning and architecturallydesigned homes. “We always use the best materials for our work to ensure the best results possible.

“We have the word ‘quality’ in our name and nothing less than that is good enough for us. We do everything by hand; we do not use machines and we have an eye for the detail of architectural features such as cornices, covings and ceiling roses.” Broomfield Quality Stoppers offer their services for any type of interior plastering work – from new builds and renovations, to EQC repairs and alterations. “We work with, and look after many high quality builders in Christchurch, as well as providing our expertise to architects, painters and the general public. We care about what we do and take a great deal of pleasure in seeing a finished interior.” You can contact Paul on 021 669 215, or through the website www.broomfieldqualitystoppers.co.nz.
