The All Girl Big Band showcases the top talent of our female Christchurch jazz musicians.

e had our debut at In The Loop at the Court Theatre, then after that followed gigs for Jazz After Work and the Swingtown Rebels.” With ages ranging from high school students through to 77 year old trombonist Jill Fenton, The All Girl Big Band showcases the top talent of our female Christchurch jazz musicians. “Our core philosophy has always been to celebrate the female musicians of this city,” Kate says. When asked what it takes to be in such a unique band, Kate replies without hesitation: “Passion – for the music, and for each other; and know your instrument and genre – the big band sound.” At the 2016 Christchurch Big Band Festival, the All Girl Big Band were given a standing ovation for their tribute to the late, great Natalie Cole. On Queens Birthday weekend, the band heads to the Manawatu Jazz Festival in Palmerston North, but before then, the girls have a super swing night planned for Sunday 14 May, at the Irish Society Hall, 29 Domain Terrace, Spreydon, from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. Lovers of modern art were amazed as the Christchurch Art Gallery last month officially unveiled their latest exhibition, Jealous Saboteurs, the first major exhibition of internationally acclaimed, New Zealand-born artist Francis Upritchard.

rom her early collections of Egyptian-inspired urns and mummies, to primate-like figures constructed from discarded fur coats, Upritchard’s sculptures have to be seen to be believed. “Francis Upritchard’s works are exquisitely imagined. They startle you with their peculiarity,” says Christchurch Art Gallery director Jenny Harper. “Visitors will come face-to-face with enigmatic figures, sprawling sloths and cabinets full of the unexpected in this unforgettable, major survey of her work.” Jealous Saboteurs is the result of over 20 years work by Upritchard to create something unique and all

her own. Described by many experts as “unusually rich in associations” and “oddly timeless,” the exhibition contains her little-seen early works, as well as a large room containing her recent sculptures. The exhibition is presented as a partnership between City Gallery Wellington and Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), Melbourne, and supported by the City Gallery Wellington Foundation. It has been curated by MUMA director Charlotte Day and City Gallery Wellington’s chief curator Robert Leonard. Francis Upritchard: Jealous Saboteurs is on display at Christchurch Art Gallery from 25 March to 16 July 2017. Entry is free.

hat is a MenzShed? The concept is to bring retired men together in one community space to share their skills, have a laugh and to work on practical tasks, either individually for personal projects, or as a group on projects for the community. “The Lincoln Rotary Club felt a MenzShed would be a good thing for Lincoln,” says John Doocey, President of the committee organising the project. “They approached me about setting one up because of my background in the building industry.” Integral to a MenzShed is a workshop and machinery. The machinery part of the Lincoln equation has been sorted through a generous donation of equipment by Gerald McCarthy, a former builder and member of the Rotary Club. The organising committee has also secured a site for the shed in Meijer Drive through the Selwyn District Council and has some funding from Pub Charities Ltd. “We estimate it will cost between $100,000 and $120,000 to build the 250 square metre facility we have in mind for the Lincoln MenzShed. We want to have not only a workshop, but also a meeting room where members can come just for a coffee and a chat, or to hear talks about various men’s issues. Although it is a melting pot of so many beautiful elements, how would you sum up www.theblackbird.co.nz? The Blackbird is basically a tangible place where I can share things. Things I am making, work I am doing, and a little glimpse into our everyday life as well. I have always loved taking pictures, and tend towards an image heavy, rather than word heavy space. You have talked about your wanderlusting ways in your blog, how does your work enable you to channel the sense of freedom and imagination that your adventures did once upon a time? As someone who not only likes a challenge but also change - very much a carry-over from years of living on the road with my husbandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s then band - my work as a stylist and our shop does exactly this. Pieces that I do for the likes of Homestyle and Resene are always short and sweet projects, I can be completely absorbed in an idea

or inspiration, and once the shoot is complete, move on, often using our travels as inspiration. Then of course with our store Blackbird Goods. An amazing trade off to long hours is being able to source our product first-hand where we can. A huge part of our ethos is being able to understand how our products are being made and by who, which has meant trips to Thailand and Vietnam over the last few years and possibly another trip later in the year. Let’s hope Margot [daughter] loves to travel! When it comes to creating a home that speaks sincerely and authentically to your own heart, as opposed to being wooed by trends, where do you suggest people start? I think navigating that fine line is about incorporating pieces that tell your story. Pieces you may have collected over the years; that have been given or passed down to you; things that hold significance, these give substance to a space. Remembering that you can take your own spin on a current style is also key, adding in a few key pieces rather than fitting your space out just like you’ve seen in a catalogue or magazine. And lastly, buying with purpose. Knowing where that item will fit in your home, picking quality, and buying because you really love it, not just because it’s the latest and greatest. You recently become a Mama to a beautiful wee babe, what does motherhood and career balance look like for you? We welcomed Margot into our world in February, and leading up to her birth we had many discussions on how that would look. I knew I wanted to take the first three or so months to not even think work, then from there to take it a day at a time. I love my work and believe it’s healthy for me to exercise my brain in a different way, but at the end of the day, Margot and mothering her is my main priority at the moment, it’s already flying past so fast! In saying that, the idea of popping Margot in her sling and taking her on the job with me is definitely an option! What have been some of the most memorable milestones for you on your professional journey? I think the first time I saw my work in print in Homestyle and the time our lounge (plus myself and Frankie!) in our previous renovation made it on the cover. I still get a thrill every time I see my work around the place! You and your husband have almost magical powers when it comes to renovating a home! Just how hard is it? It definitely isn’t for the faint hearted! Living amongst a renovation, for a visual and slightly pedantic person like myself is a bit of a nightmare. But we really do love it. There is nothing like seeing the potential in a project unfold, especially when it is by your own two hands.

For entrepreneurs and fellow creatives starting out, what sage advice can you offer? Find your own place; look for that little gap that hasn’t been filled; create your vision; go for it. Writing a mission statement of sorts is such a help, as when you are making a decision or needing direction, coming back to your initial vision is super helpful, even if it’s to change it!

On the 70th anniversary of New Zealand-born avant-garde painter Frances Hodgkins’ death, her spirit and story will be brought to life through boutique theatre production Poverty and Muse.

Shows are running at the Philip Carter Family Auditorium at the Art Gallery for two days only - on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 May. A thought-provoking look at the reality of being a cutting-edge woman artist at this time, this poignant play shows a cameo of Hodgkins’ life. We see her quirky and aging, lonely but resilient. Hodgkins’ companions are Poverty and Muse who are personified and played as a down-at-heel male and a beautiful, sensual young woman. Audiences will be captivated by the interplay in Hodgkins’ life between success and inspiration, and the harsh reality that, despite being acclaimed as England’s foremost woman artist, she was living in poverty. Real people from her life appear too. The cast of seven is directed by Martin Howells and the show designed by Julian Southgate. This production of Poverty and Muse will be a world premiere, and is writer Karen Zelas’s third play. It won the 2013 Playwrights Association of New Zealand competition for a new script. he 6.5 tonne, 10 metre- high replica flèche (slender spire) will be craned into position later this year. Its design and placement have been guided by historic drawings and photographs to ensure a close resemblance to the original flèche built in 1881. Master craftsman Michael Sinclair and his boss James Herdman say the Herringbone patterned tiling will also recall the earlier version. Michael and James, along with their keen apprentice Luke Mahon, make up the ace team working on the flèche restoration. Michael describes how he uses a blowtorch to heat, stretch and bend large sheets of thick lead which are then welded and laid over the wooden structure of the flèche. When placed on the building, a vertical steel bar beneath the structure ensures optimum bracing against seismic activity. Installation of the flèche will tick the Boys’ High restoration programme as complete - a magnificent coup for the Arts Centre. James Herdman shares his own thoughts on our emerging dreaming spire: “It will be the Crowning Glory of the Arts Centre – without a doubt!”

Unfortunately for Bugsy, he also enjoys eating things he shouldn’t, and it was an unlucky episode when he swallowed a large baited fish hook, and ran down the beach until he came to a sudden stop. This was a serious problem. The large hook went well down his throat, and embedded in his esophagus, just over his heart. It needed to be removed. He still looked remarkably chipper when he arrived, but he was a deceptively tough and stoic dog. The esophagus is an amazing tube that connects our mouth with our stomach, but it takes a direct route through the chest passing by all manner of vital structures. This could be seen as something of a design fault. For example, when we fill our car with fuel, it does not go through the engine bay between the air

conditioning system, motor and battery, or via the electrics and exhaust to get to the tank. This would be too risky. Anyway, back to Bugsy. We had to enter the chest cavity between rib five and six, and the nurse commenced assisted breathing. There was quite a lot of free blood in the thoracic cavity, and we had to locate the shaft and eye of the hook nestled within the esophagus between two major blood vessels. Immediately below was the beating heart. My surgical window was surrounded by large vessels full of blood. An incision into the esophagus followed - the point of the hook was through the esophagus, lying deep and downwards from my incision on the other side of the chest, close to the aorta. I couldn’t remove it, or see the point of the hook. Additionally, the eye of the hook was tightly suspended by the nylon attached and lodged back up towards the mouth. A decision was made to rotate the point of the hook back up and through the wall of the esophagus, before cutting it off with the barb attached. From there, we had to pass the catheter down the esophagus through the incision and attach the remaining nylon, attempting to retrieve it via the mouth. With firm traction, out came a large knotted section of fishing nylon complete with rotten fish bait. So that was the smell! We closed the esophagus and closed the chest. Bugsy needs to buy a lotto ticket! When I rang Michael to ask permission to tell Bugsy’s story, I was pleased to hear that he was back to normal and was even off fishing on the weekend. Michael passed on his thanks to the great team of nurses and vets that made this surgery possible.

In 2016, 73 per cent of students received an NCEA excellence or merit endorsement, making it the best performance by College since the system was introduced. Record results at Level 1 saw 43.8 per cent awarded excellence and 45.5 per cent gained merit. At Level 2, 30.2 per cent of students were awarded excellence and 43.1 per cent merit. There were 39 scholarships awarded, including seven outstanding.

It makes me feel old when I say it out loud... I have been a principal for nearly half of my life! Being Christchurch born and bred, and after 3 principalships, I am very proud to lead Cathedral Grammar through its next exciting phase of development and growth. I enjoy living in the community of Mt Pleasant with my wife Andrea and three children, Jack, Issy and Will. We too are a busy family and enjoy all the sport, music and other activities that keep us active, balanced with pyjama, popcorn and movie days on a cold weekend! I have just completed an 8 week challenge at F45 Gym and very much enjoy the team based fun, motivation and results this provides. My next challenge is to maintain the progress – wish me luck!

It’s about how you can use the technology around students to empower them to become lifelong learners, who can adapt and rise to the challenges of change. Innovation in education involves constant collaboration across the teaching staff to ensure that lessons are real, relevant, stimulating, student centered and personalised. In the past, education was about teaching children knowledge, but now it’s about helping students develop the necessary skills to find their own way through an ever-changing and diverse world.”

r Peter Kay, is in his twelfth year as Headmaster at Medbury School, and this year, the teaching of innovation and digital technology are very much on his agenda. Mr Kay believes that fifty years ago, teachers expected that what was taught in the classroom, would last their students a lifetime. Today, schools need to prepare students for more rapid economic, technological and social changes than ever before, for jobs that have not yet been created, and to use technologies which have not yet been invented. Mr Kay believes that as a Headmaster, it important to ensure that his teaching staff become adept at using technology in a way to support new pedagogies, which focus on learners as active participants, with tools for inquiry-based learning and the ability to use collaborative workspaces. “Embracing technology provides a wonderful opportunity to enhance experiential learning, foster project-based and inquiry-based pedagogies, facilitate hands-on activities and cooperative learning, deliver formative real-time assessment, and support the personalised learning programmes we have at Medbury”. At the beginning of the 2017 academic year, Medbury opened a new Innovation Suite and a new Junior Technology Room, to introduce Digital Technology into the curriculum. The teaching of Digital Technology will be a compulsory requirement throughout all New Zealand schools in 2018, as stipulated by the Ministry of Education. These new learning spaces have

allowed boys to be creative and innovative by using 3-D printers, state-of-the-art recording and editing equipment, and a Green Screen. The Digital Technology Programme at Medbury also develops the boys’ skills when using animation, robotics and coding. However, Mr Kay states that the challenge Medbury has is to ensure that there is the right balance between the teaching of innovation and digital technology, whilst also embracing the traditional teaching of Literacy and Numeracy.

The World Economic Forum’s Human Capital Report (2016) and their New Vision for Education Report provide a comprehensive picture of the global workforce and tell us: • most new jobs will have a technology component to them • what will increasingly be needed is good training in basic technology competence, asking the right questions, critical thinking, analysing concepts and leading a purposeful life • creativity, collaboration and non-cognitive skills will be key • knowledge of traditional arts and humanities subjects is highly relevant to this, making obsolete past notions of a dichotomy between humanities and sciences It is predicted that 5 million jobs will be lost before 2020 as artificial intelligence, robotics, nanotechnology and other socioeconomic factors replace the need for human workers. The reports point out that skills we develop in our pre-school students today will be valued highly in the future. f you’ve been feeling nostalgic and pining for a comeback of these fashionable hallmarks, we’re thrilled to let you know this epic epoch is once again being celebrated for its exports. If you were savvy enough to save some of your velvet pieces, you’ll be pleased to know the trend has been resurrected by the powers that be, and that any luxurious classics you relegated to the back of the wardrobe long ago should be resuscitated with some TLC (brush and steam) and reintroduced to your style portfolio. Velvet can be a tricky little number to keep in tip-top shape. Quick-fire recommendations include dry-cleaning (it’s always a good idea with sensitive fabrics); avoid the iron (it can ruin the ‘pile’, the tiny fibres in velvet); try natural stain removers (allegedly baking soda and lemon juice are a powerful combination, but always patch test the remedy first). WINTER WARDROBE Black. We all wear it. Our sports heroes are named after it and there is often much debate over the quantities we covet. That said, there is no escaping that black clothing is easy to style, maintain, a blessing for travel, and effortlessly chic. So, if like me, you need an industrial torch to navigate your wardrobe at times, try these tips to give your black winter wardrobe a little energy boost.

Embellish me: This is the season to turn up the bling. Jackets are being encrusted, embroidered and bedazzled like works of art. If you were ever a closet embroiderer – let this be your coming-out party. Raid your children’s cupboards, and layer up the badges with your mother’s finest to create some serious jacket attitude. Brighten up your lipstick: Head to the cosmetics counter in search of red and fuchsia shades. Blue-based reds work best with black. To prevent lipstick bleeding, apply a waxy red pencil over the whole lip. My new go-to lipstick for everyday is Lancôme Rouge Absolu Lipstick in Rose. This cream based formula won’t dry out your lips and is easy to wear. Add gold or silver accents: Choose your metals and match them accordingly – golds, especially, come in many different shades, so keep within your metallic limits. Avoid styling brassy golds with champagne golds etc. A stylish silver or gold belt on an all-black outfit will pull you together in an instant. And do hold on to your good belts - even if they go out of style momentarily, they will almost always come back into fashion. Spend the money on good quality leather belts and you will have them for decades. Make a statement with bright reading glasses: The perfect pair can add so much personality to your look, you would be forgiven for wanting a library of them to create a different mood for every day. Have fun with your frames and choose the quirkiest pair that your confidence allows you. If in doubt, think of 90+ year old Iris Apfel, the New York socialite whose incredible look is now defined by her magnificent large, round glasses.

Develop a wardrobe of scarves: Like coats, buy the highest quality you can afford. Avoid acrylic scarves at all costs. Go for wool, silk, cashmere, or a mix of these. Acrylic won’t keep you warm at night and doesn’t drape as well. Consider matching your scarf exactly to a coloured coat – it makes the look complete, especially when worn with an all-black outfit.

Join the navy: You will have noticed shades of navy and indigo creeping their way back into fashion. After years of being the ‘conservative’ colour, navy is making a stylish comeback. Softer against the skin than black, it comes with added benefits as we age. The only clunker is that it requires a complete wardrobe shift. No matter what anyone tells you – navy and black do not belong together. Navy clothes require navy, tan, chocolate or coloured accessories. that 20 percent of cancers (1 in 5) that were picked up by pilot screening will not be picked up in the national screening. This fact is being conveniently ignored. “From our perspective, a screening programme is better than no screening programme, but we would have preferred the original 50-74 year old target group. This data just reinforces what we are missing out by increasing the screening age. We will miss a large portion of cancers which are eminently treatable if found early.” While the incidence of cases continues to increase, with a number of conspiracy theories in the mix as to why, Sharma says in reality it is probably a combination of environmental factors, genetics and obesity. “We are getting better at picking up familial cancers. We are recognising and screening for certain types of familial bowel cancers and getting better at treating these. “However, Christchurch Colorectal’s take home message is consistent – be vigilant. Any symptoms such as a change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, and unexplained loss of weight should be investigated.” Younger people should be aware that bowel cancer can affect them. veryone gets to know each other and they often end up sitting at the same table,” says owner/manager Stu McDougall. Light and airy, with polished-concrete flooring, Purple Weka Café and Bar is as cosy as it is spacious. Stu’s Grandma’s heirlooms grace the china cabinet and her oval gilded mirrors adorn the back wall, while the wheels of Grandad’s bicycle form the word ‘food’ behind the counter. Having always embraced hospitality with a capital H, Stu owned the adorable Dorothy’s in Latimer Square for a spell - which equally felt like dining in someone’s home. Grandma would be proud of the hearty soups made daily, such as old-fashioned home-style vegetable, chicken and sweet corn or creamy chunky mushroom to warm the cockles. Creamy mushrooms are also piled on ciabatta bread as part of the delicious all-day breakfast menu or, as one of the homemade cabinet offerings, paired with crispy bacon as a toastie. Budding wellness entrepreneur, Lauren Glucina, is the author of wellness website Ascension Kitchen, and she is pioneering plant-based whole foods one delicious menu at a time.

er current mission is to make kindness cool with her new innovative range of raw food frozen desserts, called ‘LIVELY Desserts’ – the inspiration for this issue’s cover. Determined to take plant-powered food to the masses and revolutionise the frozen food aisle, Lauren is a qualified naturopath and herbalist. Once upon a time, Lauren was up against the all-too-familiar grind of the corporate world. Seeking a career change, a redundancy offered a silver lining, funding a two-month stint in Bali, where she formally trained as a Raw Foods Chef. She returned to New Zealand shortly after, retraining with various institutes, to gain a Bachelor of Natural Medicine with Excellence in Clinical Practice. Lauren then launched Ascension Kitchen, posting healthy raw foods recipes and videos, and documenting her own healing of severe adrenal fatigue through whole foods. Her guiding philosophy throughout was to get back to nature, turn to food first as medicine, and be kind to yourself. Lauren’s curiosity and ambitions also revealed a gap in the market for a premium frozen dessert. As she had seen her own health transform using plant-foods as medicine, she was frustrated that there was commercially nothing on offer that fit her philosophy on health and compassionate eating. There was nothing that provided a wholesome alternative to those laden with cane sugar, common allergens and E numbers, and certainly nothing that catered to the growing vegetarian and vegan markets. This has to be the ultimate gluten free quiche – a light, millet and sunflower seed crust packed full of nutrient dense greens (and wild edible weeds from the garden if you’re so inclined!), finished with crunchy seeds and soft juicy tomatoes. Naturally egg and dairy free, so perfect for those with sensitivities. I served this with a mess of fresh sunflower seed sprouts and a generous few tablespoons of gut-friendly raw sauerkraut.

GLUTEN FREE SUN-DRIED TOMATO AND SPINACH QUICHE Crust: ¾ cup millet flour (blend whole millet to make your own) ½ cup sunflower seed flour (blend whole sunflower seeds to make your own) 2 tablespoons psyllium husks ½ teaspoon coarse sea salt ½ cup water 2 tablespoons olive oil Pre-heat oven – 200˚C (390˚F). Combine all ingredients in a large bowl until a sticky dough forms. Set aside for at least ten minutes to let the dough firm up. Meanwhile, lightly oil a spring form pie

dish and dust lightly with flour (I use rice flour). Lay a sheet of baking paper over the kitchen counter, then place dough in centre. Place a second sheet over the top and use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a thin, even circle the size of your pie dish. Peel the top layer off, then carefully manoeuvre the dough into the pie dish. Press the dough into the creases of the base but leave the edges as they are (scalloped) rather than pressing them firmly into the sides (easier to remove this way – plus looks nice and rustic). Bake for a maximum of 10 minutes then remove and set aside.

METHOD: Pat the block of tofu dry using a paper towel, cut into small cubes and blend with oat milk till smooth. Add all other ingredients and blend again. Set aside. Remove tough stalks from spinach and kale, roughly chop, wash, and spin dry in a salad spinner.

in small batches with the garlic, and cook till just wilted. Add to the large mixing bowl. Finally add the raw grated zucchini, and pour over the blended tofu mixture.

Prep the rest of the ingredients: peel and finely slice onion, peel and mince the garlic, top and tail then grate the zucchini – then wrap in paper towels and squeeze the moisture out, clean out the capsicum and slice finely, and drain off extra oil from the semi-dried tomatoes.

Pour batter into the prepared pie dish, then press in the semi-dried tomatoes and halved cherry tomatoes. Cover with tin foil and bake at 200˚C (390˚F) for 25 minutes. Remove foil, turn down heat to 180˚ (356˚F) and bake for another 20 minutes or till the surface has turned golden. Check in on it to make sure the crust doesn’t burn (you may have to turn the heat down).

Heat olive oil in a frying pan, and sauté onion till golden, set aside in a large mixing bowl. Cook the capsicum till soft then add to the bowl. Add greens

To serve, sprinkle toasted seeds over the top. We enjoyed a large slice with a side of sauerkraut and a big handful of fresh sunflower sprouts.

EXPECTING SPRING Spring just wouldn’t be spring without the daffodils and tulips. Now is the perfect time to plant, with the current moist, warm soil giving bulbs the best possible start.

The general rule for planting depths is ‘the bigger the bulb the further down you plant it’.

erra Viva has its most extensive bulb range in midautumn, and amongst the stars of spring, you’ll find daffodils (including doubles, miniatures, and scented), tulips, bluebells, anemones, ranunculas, scented hyacinths (scented, grape) and freesias. Spring bulbs love good quality soft-ish soil, allowing roots to develop quickly; good light; and feeding twice a year - once, as the growing tips of the plants appear, and once, when flowering has finished and the bulbs are making reserves for the summer dormant season. This is why you don’t cut the foliage down until it’s completely died off. Thinking about space-saving spring displays, the current trend is multiplanting of varieties in one pot - 32 bulbs can be planted in a 15 litre pot to give you an extended flowering season. This is very easy to do, and all you need is good quality bulb planting mix. The general rule for planting depths is ‘the bigger the bulb, the further down you plant it’, and vice versa. So start with daffodils and scented hyacinths at 8–10cm, followed by tulips at 5–7cm, mini daffodils at 5-6cm, with grape hyacinths, anemones, and ranunculas on the top layer at 3-5cm. You can even put lilies right at the bottom for summer scent. Feed with controlled-release or liquid fertiliser and let the plants do the rest.
