ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. Generating billions of dollars per annum in New Zealand, fashion is the untameable beast at the heart of consumer culture. The chameleon like nature of the industry keeps loyalists to 'what's hot and what's not' on their toes, and leaves the rest of us who consider ourselves a 'work in progress' rather perplexed. All of this 'threads and kicks' talk has inspired some nostalgic and rather cringeinducing memories for me as I reflect on my style – or rather unstylish evolution. It would be difficult to determine which of the styles I donned as a kid of the eighties and nineties eras deserves the 'most heinous' fashion faux pas title. My obsession with unflattering fabrics; oversized, wideleg jeans, and tie-dye leggings with slouch socks spring to mind as does a denim 'cowgirl' styled dress covered in sequins, which I picked up second-hand shopping with my Mum and wore to the point of itstoday’s extinction. TIMEBALL WILL RETURN TO LYTTELTON By Céline Gibson

ohn Clarke, Heritage New Zealand’s Māori Heritage Council chair, turned the first sod on the site at Reserve Terrace where work has commenced. Heritage Destinations General Manager Nick Chin says Heritage New Zealand has been delighted with the positive feedback. “The return of the Timeball Tower and Timeball, which will drop each day (at 1pm) as it did from 1876 to 2011, will fit nicely with the regeneration of the port town that is going on. Having a familiar sight on the Lyttelton skyline is important, not only for the community, but for the country, given its strong maritime history.” Mr Chin said the existing Timeball mechanism was in an extremely fragile state when retrieved, and with concerns over parts’ longevity and maintenance costs, they decided to rebuild with an automated mechanism. Key donors behind this $3 million project are Landmark Inc (the founding funder), the Lottery Grants Board, Holcim, Stout Trust and Parkinson Memorial Park Trust (both administered by Perpetual Guardian) and the Mainland Foundation. “These donors deserve recognition because they, along with many in the community who have also given their gift of time, have laid the solid foundations, literally, for this project. It has been a real team effort.” Timeball is expected to be completed by April 2018.

ngelou’s voice has resonated through the ages, and is personified in a powerful body of work now showing at The Physics Room. Aptly titled Still, Like Air, I Rise, the exhibition was developed by ST PAUL St Gallery, AUT and curated by Abby Cunnane and Charlotte Huddleston. It runs until Sunday 27 August. Featuring Hannah Brontë’s Still I Rise (2016), which imagines an indigenous ‘women of colour’ parliament in Australia through a rap music video, the work aims to address her question, ‘How do we keep fighting if we can’t envision victory?” A tone of defiance simmers with confidence throughout the wider collection, which contains work also showing a disdain for generalised rhetoric around ‘making change’. These art forms creatively cut to the chase, so to speak, explicitly conveying their messages within special social-political contexts. Lisa Reihana’s Wog Features (1990) sets out to amplify the tone of defiance, bringing together intergenerational voices. Her contemporary work was made at a time when identity politics were at the foreground of modern art. Contributions from Salote Tawale draw on stereotypes, while Skawennati’s TimeTraveller (2008-2013) offers viewers the opportunity to ‘embody’ the narratives of First Nations History. For a comprehensive appreciation of this extensive exhibition, head down to The Physics Room.

THERE IS A REAL ESTATE OPPORTUNITY AND NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT IT With a stellar record in real estate, Cindy-Lee Sinclair’s advice is definitely worth listening to. For her and her team of consultants, achieving exceptional results is the minimum standard. This approach has worked wonderfully for her as her many awards attest.
W
inter is well and truly here and there’s an election coming up in September. “We’ve got something of a double whammy,” says Cindy-Lee of Harcourts Holmwood. “Many people still cling to the idea that winter is not a good time to put their house up for sale. Add in the election and a sense of uncertainty about that outcome and there’s an increased reluctance to go to market. I very much challenge both of those notions.” Cindy-Lee says that winter is actually a really good time to put your house up for sale because there are always buyers out there looking. “Right now, there are more buyers than there are houses for sale, so
it’s something of a seller’s market and a good opportunity to stand out with less competition. As for the election, we can’t second guess how that will turn out, so it shouldn’t become a factor for not going to market, and it doesn’t really change the underlying reasons for selling up.” There may be fewer houses on the market at this time for buyers to choose from, but Cindy-Lee knows that careful preparation of a property is still required so it is the stand-out one that buyers notice. Decluttering a house is vital. “Buyers want to be able to see themselves in a space and not be overwhelmed by the personality of the current owners”.
WINTER IS ACTUALLY A REALLY GOOD TIME TO PUT YOUR HOUSE UP FOR SALE BECAUSE THERE ARE ALWAYS BUYERS OUT THERE LOOKING.

AND THE
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life….
P
Prince 12 August 03, 2017 Metropol
rince passed away 21 April 2016 leaving a gaping hole for fans around the world. I had been lucky enough to see him in Auckland that February, and when you’ve been to a Prince concert, well; you’re never really the same again when it comes to music. I used to be the South Island Representative for Sony Music and music has always been a core part of my life. So when the opportunity came for me to catch up with Prince’s old band, The Revolution, for the release day of Purple Rain Deluxe, I jumped at it. The Revolution formed the backbone of Prince’s music from 1983 to 1986. These three years brought us Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, and Parade. Prince commanded the radio airwaves for most of the eighties. Scheduled for the Wiltern on Wilshire Boulevard on 23 June in Los Angeles, The Revolution was reuniting to celebrate ‘Him’ in the best way they could by putting on a show that gave the fans the music they loved by the band that helped to make it. Purple Rain is actually a live track recorded by the band at a concert in ’83 - along with most of the music then, it really was a group effort. The concert started with Computer Blue, the funk-edged grinding guitar track that all true fans relish. It flowed through song after song, from the first eight years of his career with highlights like the unheard Destiny/Roadhouse Garden to Erotic City, 1999 and Paisley Park. Then it came, the song that personified Prince’s death and the one that most true fans try not to listen to even now… Sometimes it Snows in April. A breather followed for the band before Lisa and Wendy took to the stage to remind

us the music is ours now…and around me, the tears started to flow. How do you come back from that? The power chord hit Let’s go Crazy followed by Kiss and When You were Mine, with guest vocalists Maya and Gretchen from Saturday Night Live fame. Purple Rain was up last with an encore of When Doves Cry, I would Die for You and the foot stomping, Baby I’m a Star. Afterwards, I caught up with the band to talk about Prince and where the band was going. I said to Bobby Z, Prince’s drummer and longtime friend: “The Revolution is an important part of the Prince story and now, more than ever, a strong connection to fans of him and the music. How does The Revolution feel about this?” He told me: “We are honoured that fans come to see us and celebrate his life and music with us. These songs belong to you now, the fans. We are all grieving and celebrating his music helps us.” The emotions visceral, I asked him, “How do you keep going?” “Some nights are harder than others,” he concedes. “The smiles on people’s faces keep us going. But in unexpected places during any song, the sadness will kick in.” What’s in the future for the band? “We will finish up our spring and summer tour and will probably play some fall and winter dates. Then hopefully, we’ll make our way around the world. We would love to come to Australasia. We will see.” After a great talk with the band it was time to retire. It was the perfect concert to celebrate a fantastic musician whose music will resonate for years to come. Thank you Prince and The Revolution for giving us such a fantastic gift.

Do you have a painting, ceramic or sculpture gathering dust in your attic? Do you feel guilty over your neglect? Then begone guilt, forever! Art from the Attic comes to your rescue!
C
arolyne Grant, trustee of The Champion Centre Foundation, explains how this event will support The Champion Centre in raising much needed capital supporting early intervention for children with special needs. “Art from the Attic is a Foundation fundraiser, with the support of a collaborative tour de force between CoCA Gallery, Lane Neave and SCAPE Public Art, to bring this night of eclectic artworks auctioned for a most worthy cause.” The Champion Centre is one of the country’s foremost early intervention services for infants and young children with developmental delays. Much of its success stems from the understanding that parents are fundamental in the education of their children. Working with the whole family ensures all have the knowledge and support to help children achieve their full potential.
So, here’s your check-list if you want to pay it forward:
1.
Date and Venue - Thursday, 14 September, from 7pm at Lane Neave, 141 Cambridge Terrace.

Just Breathe In this contemporary day and age, with all its technological bells and whistles, our default state of being is often set to ‘turbo charged’. At times we have to learn lessons ‘the hard way’ before we take vital steps to safeguard our mental and physical wellbeing. That’s why the philosophy embraced and shared by nutritionist and beloved blogger Lauren Glucina is such a saving grace. Metropol talks to the plant based food innovator about living life to the full with a calmer soul, a healthier mind, and a nourished body. 1. Tell us about the core philosophy of your brand? As a nutritionist, I’m absolutely passionate about food as medicine, particularly plant foods. My guiding philosophy has always been to Get back to Nature, because she always gets it right:
-
Include more plant-based whole foods in the diet to give our bodies the best opportunity to thrive - Literally tune into nature (and turn off that digital stimulus!) to help keep grounded and balanced. Both my blog and products bring this philosophy to life. We seem to have become so disconnected from real food and are hyper-stimulated with all this continuous technology. My ultimate goal really is to inspire people to eat well and connect with nature to bring health and vitality to their lives. 2. Your creativity comes alive through your blog and recipes; how do you stimulate your imagination to generate new ideas? Thank you! I find inspiration everywhere – books, farmers markets, even the garden centre. Creativity comes easily when you’re not stressed.

My ultimate goal really is to inspire people to eat well and connect with nature to bring health and vitality to their lives.
4. The blogosphere is a fairly noisy environment these days; why do you think you’ve been able to achieve such traction in this realm? The one thing I have focused on more than anything is to deliver consistent, quality content. My goal is not to be social media famous. My goal is to provide genuinely helpful information and simple, healthy recipes to those seeking to improve their health and wellbeing. The recipes I create have been tried and tested numerous times before making it to the blog, and some of the referenced articles I write take days to complete. I won’t post an article or recipe for the sake of it, and I won’t write or create content in a bad mood. 5. What does ‘plant powered wellness’ actually mean? It’s a reflection of my philosophy – get back to nature! Finding wellness simply by increasing your intake of plantbased whole foods, and having a relationship with nature (unplug, go for a walk, and get your feet in the grass or your hands dirty in the garden). When I talk about a plant-based whole foods diet, I am specifically referring to one that is largely based on plant foods in their most natural, unprocessed state. It doesn’t mean vegan. The literature time and again shows that high consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains are protective against disease. And it is particularly important for your gut microbiome – they feed off plant fibres! 6. What are some of the milestones you have been most proud of on your professional journey? I felt a huge sense of achievement graduating from my studies, I was studying two qualifications simultaneously and it was no easy feat. It came with a lot of personal sacrifice so I was just over the moon to finally get there. The other milestone I’m exceptionally proud of has been launching my range of LIVELY Desserts to the market. The desserts break the mould in every way imaginable,
and are made without wheat, gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, nuts or cane sugar. They’re entirely vegan, and made with raw and organic ingredients. I feel like they are an extension of my blog – offering a more wholesome alternative to your conventional, sugar laden frozen desserts. The feedback from those who have tried them has been amazing, and the stores we are stocked in have all been so supportive. Very grateful! 7. What is your view on the relationship between mind, body and soul? True health is when all are in balance. You can eat the best diet in the world, but if you perceive the world to be up against you, are stressed and are not taking time out to do things that nourish your soul, then lasting health is going to be a challenge. Mindfulness and self-care are critical pillars of health, just as diet and exercise are. 8. Do you have a favourite mantra? More plants!

3. How do you introduce balance into your life? And what does success on this front look like for you? I book in time for myself each day. I wake early and light a candle, make a cuppa and get cosy on the couch for at least 30 minutes of quiet time which may include some meditation, conscious breathing, or a tarot spread. I have the same practice in the evenings, before bed. I don’t ever work past 6pm, and I try to get a few decent nature walks in a week. Since I’ve been doing this, I’ve found I’m sleeping so much better, and am consequently far more productive during the day. I’m not perfect however and do occasionally slip up! Selfcare is both an art and a discipline!

o Be Continued…is an apt name for a funky, classy retail offering at 48a Bryndwr Road. It’s already a destination drawing visitors to Christchurch from other centres, despite its fledgling age of four months. To the untrained yet fashion-loving eye, everything here appears new; indeed many items are exactly that. Preloved clothes are mixed in with the brand spanking, such as achingly cool homewares and shoes. Co-owners Amanda and Martin Stirling-Exon are not newbies to cutting-edge fashion, and yet they’re sparkly-eyed about this venture. Amanda loves offering suggestions and helping to style customers. Their son Monte is also involved, and has started a men’s section which is already striding out the door. A few years back, Martin was instrumental in the establishment of Ballantynes’ Contemporary Lounge. Recently back in Christchurch after living in Central Otago, this family is shifting things up in the ‘burbs’ by being open seven days, until 5.30pm on weekdays and 10am until 4pm on weekends. More often than not, the clothes here are beautifully cut, designer pieces at a fraction of the cost. Amanda, who sells 50/50 on behalf, says she’s strict about as-new quality and the cleanliness of everything in-store. Besides clothes, the store stocks the other things needed for cosy contentment or Danish ‘Hygge’; namely rugs, mugs, candles and soaps.

CALLING ALL FRILLSEEKERS By Kate Pierson
Frills, silks, lashings of feminine colour: Vogue dubbed it the ‘prim prissy trend’ back in 2016, but whatever epithet rocks your sartorial boat, ladylike is the name of this style game.
T
he focus of our affections is frills – frills, glorious frills. The outfit accent made an appearance in the 15th century on draw-string necklines of full chemises before evolving into a separately constructed ruffle popularised by the 16th century.
The look has continued to make an impression ever since. If, to date, you’ve lived in fear of frills, and have a lingering sense they may cramp your minimalist style, or your affinity with an edgier aesthetic, consider the following.

Leather up: a sure-fire way to balance out an overtly feminine look is to introduce leather. A chic solution to a potentially saccharine look, leather will provide a compelling contrast.

3.
Go boldly in the direction of your style dreams: admittedly frills paired up with an overtly feminine hue – i.e. blush or lavender – are an unapologetic foray into uber-femininity. Which, for the record, we happen to love. If, however, you’re only wanting to dip your toe into the prissy pool, opt for a frilly garment made out of a bold and fierce fabric think camouflage, metallic, or even an abstract pattern. Calling all frillseekers! This is your moment to shine.

ven before Romeo offered his eager lips as “two blushing Pilgrims” to Juliet, both women and men have been aware of the lips as a focal facial point. Not only is lip augmentation and reshaping one of the most popular cosmetic procedures currently requested of Face Value’s Dr Philip Frost; it is the one he particularly enjoys performing. It is an area where he can truly combine artistry and medicine, not only to enhance and volumise a younger lip, but also redefine and correct the signs of aging in his older clients. As well as changing the lip size for those who desire fuller lips, dermal fillers are used to correct those lines around the lip area which
appear as we age and lose volume and definition. The results should complement overall facial appearance and balance, and not be immediately obvious. “It’s all about ensuring the lips fit the face”, says Dr Frost. The treatment must be tailored to each individual client, regardless of the latest celebrity look. “We work with your unique features to create a look designed especially for you.” While the results can be stunning, lip augmentation is a relatively quick and easy procedure with minimal downtime. The lips are numbed with topical cream before injecting. This ensures comfort for the client, who then works in partnership with Dr Frost to decide on the right personalised result.

s unashamed fan girls of this in-vogue hue, we’ve done some digging to explore the history behind its rise to fame. Admittedly, it hasn’t always commanded a cult following; pink has often had to fight for recognition and on more than one occasion has put on a brave face when the colour critics have turned their backs on what it has to offer. In 2017, however, pink has never been hotter. It’s a rag to riches story that is told over and over again with the narrative led by the style powers that be. Its denotative association with women offers a very one-dimensional understanding of its presence in wardrobes, because in fact, there have been many a thesis inspired by the male relationship with this fair maiden of the colour palette. The role of pink within the context of dandyism has informed a great deal of discourse with a particular scene in The Great Gatsby novel often cited for its subversive take on the colour; it’s portrayal

The colour’s powers of seduction are still as strong as ever. of pink admonishing the notion that it is gender specific. The scene features Gatsby in a pink suit at a lunch. His colour choice is discredited by Tom Buchanan’s character not for the reasons modern day prejudices would have us assume though – criticisms about lacking masculinity or virility – but rather because during this time the colour pink was hamstrung by working class connotations. Throughout history, pink has captured the imagination of classicists, including the Greek poet Homer who wrote of a ‘rose-fingered dawn’, and painter Raphael in his Madonna of the Pinks painting. The 20th century then adopted the shade, catapulting it to fame with more assertive iterations. From elegant Jacqueline Kennedy to blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe, pink has swept many a sartorial siren off her feet, and, judging by the digital and bricks and mortar shelves teeming with pink possibilities in 2017, it seems the colour’s powers of seduction are still as strong as ever. All praise pink!

air Co. has done just that, whilst also remaining in Westfield near Hoyts. Brother and sister Lee and Hayley together manage their two parlours, determined to bolster the central city’s revitalisation. a
beautiful journey
It’s a beautiful thing when a formerly central city business returns to within a stone’s throw of its pre-quake digs.
Hayley tells the story of how her brother Lee fitted out his former Chancery Lane hair salon just five months before the October 2010 quake. Managing to survive beyond this disaster, Lee wasn’t so fortunate after February’s devastating sequel, when he, like so many, lost his premises and Christchurch’s central precinct was cordoned. Hayley’s face glows with pride when she talks of Lee’s loyal client base once again beating a path to their city parlour. She and Lee have also run the Westfield Riccarton Hair Co. since mid-2014. It’s regularly party-atmosphere-busy. Both salons feature experienced staff, reasonable prices and loyalty programmes with free treatments and products. Hayley says appointments often aren’t necessary in BNZ Square, unless the job in question is lengthy, such as hair colouring, or chemical straightening. Even then, potential clients should pop in and enquire.

HEALTH UPDATE: ADDRESSING HERNIAS
The Hernia Clinic in Christchurch specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of hernias. Metropol spoke to hernia surgeon Ross Roberts to find out more about this disorder. Debbie Osborn, Dr Ross Roberts, Myra Salter, Jacqui Spencer
What is a hernia?
Are there different types of hernias?
A hernia is a lump that results from a part of the intestine (bowel) or fatty tissue slipping through a weakness in the abdominal wall. They are particularly common disorders, especially in men.
Yes – the most common is an inguinal hernia located in the groin just above the leg crease. Femoral hernias are also groin hernias and they are more common in women. Then there are umbilical hernias which occur near the navel, incisional hernias that appear in the abdomen at the site of a previous surgery and hiatal hernias that can lead to reflux.
What should be done about a hernia?
What is the procedure to repair a hernia?
In adults, hernias do not repair themselves. If left untreated, they will get bigger over time. Hernias are often uncomfortable, and they can become dangerous and quite threatening. Most hernias require surgical repair to alleviate the symptoms and to prevent possible strangulation of the intestines. Anyone who is fit and well should undergo the surgery, otherwise the hernia will get worse and be harder to repair. There are no gains to be made out of waiting for treatment.
Surgical repair can be carried out laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) with tiny incisions or by open surgery. Because it is less intrusive, keyhole surgery has a quicker recovery time enabling patients to get back to work more quickly. Keyhole surgery is not always suitable, however, and as specialists, The Hernia Clinic can help patients to decide which procedure is best for them.
We understand that hernia repair involves the use of mesh. How safe is that? All hernia repairs require the use of permanent materials to permanently repair them. Previously permanent suture materials were used – nylon, even wire - but that often caused long-term pain and they are not suitable for laparoscopic repair. Since the 1990s, mesh has been used to avoid these problems. It’s in the form of a sterile woven material made from synthetic plastics that are biocompatible. The benefits are greater efficacy, lower reactions, less pain and a reduction in the risk of hernia recurrence from 15% to 1%.
The Hernia Clinic has a policy of seeking feedback from its patients a year after their surgery to find out about the success of the use of the mesh. The clinic has now had responses from over 2,000 patients so has a pretty solid basis for vouching for the benefits of the material. If you think you or a member of your family may have the symptoms of a hernia you can contact The Hernia Clinic on (03) 961 6666 or email info@herniaclinic.co.nz.

It’s easy to fall into a funk when it comes to pursuing entertaining and educational options for the little ones in our lives.
he key protagonists in our recreational regime tend to be the same activities on repeat. This idea fatigue was directly addressed by the advent of The Christchurch under 5s Collective. Set up in 2012 to reconnect the Christchurch community following the earthquakes, the group is dedicated to providing inspiration to parents and families growing up in a broken city. As this broken city is mended and evolves in its re-
imagined form, the Collective is playing a pivotal role in unearthing all of the social scene goodness that is pitched at wee ones. Additionally, there is a plethora of advice, from how to stay warm for less, through to how to discover the most remarkable fluffies in the city. SPORTS FUN ACTIVITIES WHERE TO GO WHAT TO DO HIRE
THE FINEST IN FILM By Céline Gibson
The Canterbury Film Society is planning a great 2018, for it marks not only its 60th anniversary, but more importantly, 60 years of providing the ultimate in cinema experience.
“S
o many brilliant films fail to get commercially released in New Zealand,” explains Dale Deavoll, President of the Canterbury Film Society (CFS). “That’s our point of difference - we provide quality films our members would otherwise not get to see.” The CFS is a non-profit incorporated society and a registered charitable organisation. It is a member of the New Zealand Federation of Film Societies (NZFFS), which has been screening films nationwide for over 60 years. “Another advantage over mainstream cinemas is that our films are curated,” says Dale. “The NZFFS draw from their own extensive collection, along with a selection of the latest titles, to provide the highest standard of both
international and New Zealand films.” Dale says what he loves most about CFS is how eyes can be opened and pre-conceived ideas can be challenged about people and their place in society. “I remember our premiere screening of the documentary film Intersexion. Mani Bruce Mitchell, who was New Zealand’s first “out” intersex person, and who researched and presented the film, made a special guest appearance. That was a great night!” Membership of the CFS is by annual subscription. Screenings are 7.30pm, every Monday night at Christchurch Art Gallery, which Dale readily asserts is the “Best venue, ever!” Info: www.canterburyfilmsociety.org.nz Metropol August 03, 2017 39

W
hy? Because this year’s Tennis Canterbury Love Tennis Regional Open Day is taking place simultaneously at 19 clubs across Christchurch. Traditionally, at the beginning of the season, each club runs their own open day, but after the glowing success of a joint campaign run by Tennis Central in Wellington last year, Christchurch is swinging into action with its own collaborative event, with clubs unifying in their ambition to attract new interest to the sport. The Love Tennis website at canterburytennis.co.nz/LoveTennis has the full list of participating clubs who are opening their doors over two days - 2-3 September from 1-4pm - to people of all ages who would like to try out – or get back into – tennis. This fun, free event has myriad activities and benefits on offer including games, prizes, giveaways, a BBQ and equipment to try out. As an added bonus, event attendees can also go into the draw to win an ASB sponsored trip for two to the ASB Classic in Auckland including flights and accommodation. Check it out for yourself!

n the painting, de Troy brought together two of the newest 18th century trends in France, oysters and champagne. Both were favourites adopted by the King. Champagne and oysters have since become synonymous with sophistication and elegance. And decadence. A little of that long association has come to Christchurch, at Louis, the newest restaurant and bar in the hospitality hub at 123 Victoria Street. Owner Jason Whitelaw imagined a level of hospitality not available in Christchurch. Manager Karl Dixon says, “We’ve brought a little bit of Paris, London, and Melbourne to Christchurch. And why not have a five and a half foot chandelier?” With sixteen champagnes, three by the glass, from Mumm Cordon Rouge to Louis Roederer ‘Cristal’ 09, and Bluff oysters dressed twelve different ways, Louis certainly provides an atmosphere of grandeur. With a décor that is slick and pristine, it has floor to ceiling mirrors, but also has a French country feel. “We want to dispel the myth that we’re pretentious,” Dixon says. Louis is a fun place, too. With craft beers on tap, twelve whiskies, an extensive range of other wines, shared meals and mains, and treats to finish, Louis is the place for everyone. “It’s a bar that does restaurant quality food,” Dixon says. See the www.louisbar.nz website for hours, social media, and more.

My love of wine is like anything in life; it develops over time. I realise the moment it started - I was throwing back a glass of Pink Chardon in the mideighties, and then realised there was something better.
L
ike New Zealand epicurean tastes, my development has been just as amazing. As a guest of the Canterbury Wine Awards, I realise we have all been on a learning curve together. My love and knowledge of New Zealand wine now means I can choose between areas of New Zealand and the individual wine varieties from each area. Mount Michael Vineyard Wines are a fine addition to this. Established in 1994 down in Central Otago, they got the jump on what most wine enthusiasts now recognise: the ability of Otago to produce a world winning Pinot Noir. On a six hectare plot overlooking Wanaka, the team started with Chardonnay and Pinot grapes.
In 2003, they were rewarded for their hard work with a silver medal in the London International Wine Challenge for the 2002 Pinot Noir. I’m now fortunate enough that my tastes have developed from the hedonistic eighties to recognise some stunning wine coming out of our fine country. The Mount Michael Pinot is rich and velvety and the perfect addition to some of the New Zealand wild venison and pork we can acquire here. Sitting by the fire up in Hanmer, the taste of plum and cherries is smooth on the palate and a wonderful accompaniment to a cold winter’s night. They have a wonderful Pinot Gris and a Pinot Rose, but it was the Pinot Noir that enveloped me. Try it for yourself…

SECRET’S OUT
When it comes to exquisite cuisine, we’d all agree we love a show-off. Not just a candidate with great looks and charm that enjoys paying lip service to itself, but a restaurant considered a genuine palate pleaser to even the most discerning epicurean.
The iconic Tutto Bene & Formaggio’s represent the distilled essence of quality, from the service to the fresh, fulsome fare.
W
ell, Christchurch, brace yourself. We’ve discovered two of these culinary beauties that while self-deprecating by nature, have well and truly earned bragging rights. The spotlight is firmly on Tutto Bene and its sister restaurant, Formaggio’s, and with good reason. If the above has your taste buds jumping for joy, you’re not alone, as this news is hot off the press. Up until now, it’s been one of the hospitality scene’s best kept secrets that two stand-out brands in their own right are actually part of the same family. As this joyous reality sinks in, the obvious benefits will surely start to resonate.
From one side of town to the other - Formaggio’s is in Sydenham and Tutto Bene resides in Merivale the iconic restaurants represent the distilled essence of quality, from the service to the fresh, fulsome fare. The proposition is simple but significant and oh-so-satisfying in its delivery – honest and reliable international and Italian gastronomy that is good for the soul. Group dining and corporate functions are positively spoilt for choice and for those who want to settle into a food coma in the comfort of their own home, takeaway completes the perfect cuisine picture. Book now for an evening that you ‘probably’ will never forget.

R
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE DELEGATE
Despite virtual classrooms and webinars becoming increasingly part of our everyday lives, the necessity for businesses to connect face to face still holds significant importance. The needs of the delegate, however, have changed.
58 August 03, 2017 Metropol
arely can delegates completely commit themselves to the agenda of a conference because they are never totally free of the weight of their inbox. On the dedicated conference floor at Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square, delegates can retreat quickly to a convivial space accessible to all six meeting rooms, yet free from disturbance. Here at “The Crossing” there are refreshments, restrooms and a business desk facilities all highly valued by delegates. Novotel also has complimentary WIFI for each event to enable facilitators and delegates to easily access their emails or social media. In addition, for an extra cost, the hotel can provide a dedicated line for a higher speed to ensure that larger feeds during an event can run smoothly. Loyalty to a venue not only simplifies the facilitator’s life, there is a monetary value as well. Novotel Christchurch rewards companies with AccorHotels Le Club Meeting Planner points for every dollar spent. Companies that hold more than six events within a 12-month period at Novotel or ibis Christchurch receive bonus Le Club Meeting Planner points, a 30% discount on in-house AV, and one complimentary room night for every group of twenty booked. Having the Novotel and ibis Christchurch hotels located across the Square from each other means delegates can choose from both internationally recognised economy and upscale hotels. EVENTS:
TOP TIPS FOR PARTICIPANTS While events and conferences can present a significant opportunity for participants to build their brand profile, delivering the right messages to the right audiences at the right time, there are a number of considerations to factor into the planning equation.

Here are our top tips for success:
1.
Know your audience: this sounds like teaching one how to suck eggs, but having a fundamental understanding of the target audience you are trying to connect with is absolutely essential when it comes to identifying which event platform is best for your brand. Before you sign on any dotted line, hold the event organiser to account when it comes to providing a comprehensive breakdown of the demographics they are engaging through their event to ensure you have compatible targets.
2.
Choose the right staff: in business, first impressions are everything and ensuring you have the right frontline staff at an event is paramount. In an environment saturated by comparable commodities you need a compelling way to stand out from the commercial crowd and your staff should personify your unique points of difference. Pick representatives carefully – people who aren’t crowd shy, who know your product and can think on their feet.
3.
Invest in the right assets: not dissimilar to the importance of selecting the right staff to make a positive first impression, how you communicate your offering via your stand assets is very important. You don’t need unnecessary bells and whistles that will break the bank, but investing in core brand assets that bear repetition is a wise decision. Think eye-catching signage with effective key messaging, take-away information like brochures or newsletters, and carefully curated collateral that will help your brand make meaningful connections during and postevent. A PLACE TO
CONNECT
There would be few who don’t hold a nostalgic memory of the former Crowne Plaza close to their heart. Its untimely demise following the Canterbury earthquakes dealt a significant loss to a city that held its accommodation, events and culinary offerings in high regard.
“THIS HOTEL OFFERS A RANGE OF INSPIRING WORKSHOP OR BRAINSTORMING VENUES TO MEET AND CONNECT; ALL DELIVERED WITH OUR SIGNATURE CROWNE PLAZA SERVICE.”
But on Friday 30 June, a new era dawned for this icon, with the opening of the brand new Crowne Plaza, residing in all its contemporary glory on Colombo Street. The brand is being readily embraced by locals and visitors, tourists and businesses; already winning hearts with its nonpretentious elegance and its carefully considered elements, all working harmoniously to deliver an inspiring experience, home away from home destination, and stunning corporate backdrop. Upon entering the lobby one is immediately impressed with the ambience. This owes to a combination of refined décor made up of divine textures and interest points - velvet furnishings, brass fixtures, chic lighting, soulful, awardwinning photography and savvy acoustics – and myriad cleverly interconnected dining, socialising and professional spaces that individually and collectively contribute to an international hotel with a distinctly local feel.
The hotel features 204 spacious, modern rooms and suites with generous 21st century conveniences – unlimited free WiFi, Samsung smart TVs with Bluetooth connectivity, all complemented by scenery overlooking historic Victoria Square and the landmark Avon River. Paying homage to the rich history of the site’s original occupant – one of Christchurch’s first hotels, The Golden Fleece, the dining and meeting spaces are tangible tributes to yesteryear. Market Place restaurant and bar bears the original name of neighbouring Victoria Square, Café 1851 bears the date of the original hotel, and the boardrooms boasting city views and natural light have eponymous names - ‘Ellis, Gartner and Oram’ – in honour of the original Golden Fleece owners. Of the latter corporate spaces, Crowne Meetings Manager Phoebe Zwarts says the hotel is “delighted” to bring additional business event capacity to central Christchurch. “This hotel offers a range of inspiring workshop or brainstorming venues to meet and connect; all delivered with our signature Crowne Plaza service. “We’re offering four spaces specifically designed to ensure the success of any client’s business function, with the flexibility to accommodate a range of events from smaller meetings through to large-scale presentations.” A larger premium meeting space, The Golden Fleece Room, can cater for up to 150 theatre or cocktail style, or 90 banquet style, offering dual projection screens and built-in audio. Ellis, Gartner and Oram cater for 10-14 guests boardroom style, or groups can choose to combine 2-3 of the spaces for a medium-sized space. The latest in technology, a highly dedicated and expert event management team, and access to the beautiful dining spaces and even the cosy first-floor library make for an ideal and inspiring place for business minds to congregate and innovate. COMFORT FOOD FOR
THE SOUL
A delicious secret is out and it’s bound to attract lovers of down-to-earth but artisan fare in their droves. Belgian Beer Café is at the source of the gastronomic magic.
A
ptly titled ‘Breakfast in Bread’, this one-of-akind culinary concept involves the innovative prowess of an artisan baker from Uno and the impressive vision of Belgian Beer Café owner Mark McGuiness. “We’ve started with four flavours including vege, salmon and ‘the big breakfast’. We take the top off, hollow it out, and cook the breakfast into the bread. “It has a slight crust to it, and when it comes out you can slice
it open and indulge yourself.” The Breakfast in Bread has a match made in heaven at the café – the iconic Bloody Mary. “We’ve created a range including standard and flavoured vodka varieties.” Joining an already stand-out brunch and a la carte menu, there’s no doubt there’s about to be a new food frenzy in Christchurch at Belgian Beer Café with the advent of new recipes that pack such a delicious punch. Open for breakfast from 11am until 4pm on Saturday and Sunday; check it out for yourself.
EVENTS:
TOP TIPS FOR ORGANISERS
Hosting an event comes with significant responsibility. And whether you consider yourself a novice or a seasoned veteran, it never hurts to recap on the top priorities when it comes to the planning phase. So here we go…
1.
Save the date: a valuable way to measure initial interest and avoid any clashes is to float a save the date with your key targets. Use this ‘discovery phase’ as an opportunity to troubleshoot any problems – specifically lower levels of interest than anticipated, or to identify any clashes with comparable events or those that threaten to steal your limelight. A save the date is often useful a year in advance depending on the size of the event.
2.
Choose guests that speak volumes: guest speakers are an important anchor and hook for your event. Develop robust criteria for keynote speaker selection – this will be based on your event goals. Speakers need to be able to excite, engage and educate.
3.
Promotion is paramount: whether your event is in its infancy, or is the apple of an industry’s eye, traction is never guaranteed. Every year requires a fresh rethink on how best to build and amplify your event’s profile – a multi-faceted approach has greatest potential. Utilise channels you know are frequented by your target audiences – think social media, blogs, print and digital campaigns and radio if you have the budget and it’s a justified investment. If in doubt, engage a respected and well-versed event planner.

WELCOME TO PARADISE
After living in large apartment blocks where the balcony was the ‘urban space’, or in gangly, semi-detached houses situated on sections the size of postage stamps during my jaunt in the UK, I’ve developed a greater sense of appreciation for the generous greenspace that is immediately beyond our backdoor.

THIS IS THE PERFECT TIME TO LET YOUR CREATIVE STREAK RUN WILD AND START PLANNING YOUR IDEA OF PARADISE.
ome may beg to differ, but I think we’re pretty lucky in New Zealand to have land at our disposal where we can extend our internal living spaces. Although stats in the last couple of years suggest our outdoor areas are dwindling in size, partly attributable to increasing house sizes, I’d still say we’re better off than many others. Come winter, unless there are ample heating sources outside, we tend to shy away from spending large periods of time enjoying these spaces. But this is the perfect time to let your creative streak run wild and start planning your idea of paradise. If your section currently has a mind of its own and you want to take the control back to tame it into stylish submission, but don’t know where to start, engaging a landscape design expert is a helpful first port of call. Your bank account may baulk at this prospect, but many consultancies offer tiered services so you can engage them just for the initial design phase, or right through to the end stages of construction if you so desire. Outdoor areas can feel like unchartered territory, but just remember the same design principles apply as they would when decorating an indoor area. You’ll want to start off by making the all-important though challenging distinction between want and need. This requires thinking about not only current but future needs, who the space needs to accommodate, and how you may want to compartmentalise design elements to meet the different needs of these various parties.
Factor in sun and wind patterns, contemplate what is salvageable and what has to go, adhere to any rules set out by your local territorial authority, consider fluidity and synergy between the indoor and outdoor spaces, and identify a theme at the outset if you want to introduce quite distinct elements. You may decide minimalist chic is the way forward, or you could have aspirations to create an Old English feel to your space or to introduce an aesthetic with a Moroccan vibe. This type of distinct vision requires considerable planning to ensure all of the elements work in harmony with each other. Our original point stands strong – if in doubt, the expertise of a bona fide landscape designer is invaluable.

BRINGING THE PERSONALITY OF THE PAST
INTO THE FUTURE Antiques and yesteryear items can certainly outshine their modern alternatives as a purposeful part of the home.
“U
se them and show them off,” advises owner of Twine Antiques and Collectables, Sandy Williams. Her affordable treasures are not intended for hiding away or gathering dust.
Housed for the last six years in Waikuku’s Old Brick Mill which was once a twine factory, the ambience invites with a warm, crackling log burner - and a café right next door. Rustic wooden boxes, ornate coal
shuttles, enchanting Persian and pure wool rugs, in many colours and sizes, can create the cosiest of spaces. Under an eclectic canopy of chandeliers, retro lighting and old lamps, lies a nostalgic selection of LPs, interesting books, collectable china and most likely a little bit of everything. A home comes to life with the personality of a well-made antique, says Sandy. “They add that bit of difference. New homes, especially, need at least one special piece.” Twine is well-stocked with antique solid wood furniture including dining tables, chairs, dressing tables, scotch chests, sideboards and washstands. Vintage kitchenware such as Crown Lynn bowls, lemon squeezers, egg beaters, enamel colanders and bone-handled cutlery make attractive functional utensils. For the outdoors, there are French tables and sought-after old garden tools – because they sure don’t make them like they used to. Twine Antiques and Collectables buys and sells, with new stock weekly. Take a nostalgic trip to 1473 Main North Road, Waikuku, Thursday to Sunday 9am-4pm, and follow on Facebook.
ANIMAL INSTINCT By Kate Pierson
Creature features are by no means a new décor phenomenon, but they’ve achieved significant traction on the home style scene in recent times.
Now we’re turning our attention to the animal art that is energising our spaces.
COLE & SON WALLPAPER (MARIINSKY, BELLINI)
Y
ou may recall our A Bug’s Life piece run earlier this year as a tribute to the insect inspiration infiltrating our homes, and now we’re turning our attention to the animal art that is energising our spaces. From wall busts and quirky pictures to mantelpiece accents, Polyvore discovered that wildlife motifs were the most searched décor trend leading into 2015 and their popularity shows no sign of abating. A striking accompaniment to lush pot plants and Scandinavian style furniture and soft furnishings, this modern menagerie is often
interpreted in materials like brass, ceramics and papier-mâché. Some of our favourite artists channelling their animal instinct include Melbourne designer Ashleigh Fleming who produces fine art prints for HECTOR ROSE – www.hectorrose.com and Norwegian based visual artist Andreas Lie whose double exposure technique sees native animals blended into their natural landscape http://artbylie.tumblr.com/ However you choose to embrace the trend, you have full permission to go wild! or August, the gallery will showcase the works of Tim Wraight and Ché Vincent called ‘Changing Stories’. Both artists hail from Motueka, so have plenty of picturesque landscapes in which to draw inspiration. Tim Wraight’s wooden sculptures explore the traditions of cultures associated with the reverence given to relics and remains, taking these objects and giving them a new narrative. The work of Ché Vincent comes from his passion for botany and natural processes; exploring the patterns created by plant forms by the way water changes and repeats a flow pattern by decay and renewal. Tim Wraight and Ché Vincent’s exhibition ‘Changing Stories’ opens at Little River Gallery from 5-30 August. For more information about the exhibition, visit www.littlerivergallery.com.

From humble beginnings of local plaster supply and application in Christchurch, Rockcote joined the Resene Group of companies in 2002 and is now Resene Construction Systems. “Our people, products, systems, and network of registered contractors have always maintained the highest level of innovation, performance and quality that has stood the test of time,” says Manager Mike Olds. The Resene Construction Systems range of products and systems is significant. “Our high performance external plaster facade installation is complete and undertaken by one supplier, and one contractor. THIS IS A FOOD COURT OF BOUTIQUES, ARTISANS AND FOODIES THAT HAVE COME TOGETHER WITHIN A NEW SPACE. central city is all part of the attraction. The area is one that I have indicated in the past as one to watch with the emergence of Vodafone and other big corporates such as Environment Canterbury paving the way for the next level of amenities to emerge. The rejuvenation of the central city could not have happened without these corporates who essentially are the ones leading the way back into the city.
Bringing with them a vast number of staff, they pave the way for the next tier of businesses to do the same, while providing small pockets or gaps for innovative ideas to pop up in. What I never anticipated was that the small pockets would be the ones to come next. Little High Eatery is an innovative step in the sense that it is injecting a new and dynamic level of amenities and
habitation in the city. In turn, it draws others, including medium sized businesses, back into the four avenues. I have discussed the issues around the underbelly of commercial Christchurch and how the sole traders, small boutique companies and creatives, have essentially been priced out of returning to the city – yet Little High Eatery has illustrated that doesn’t have to be the case. They have provided an example of how they can come back: through the innovative use of space in a new way, and by collaborating to create something beyond the realms of traditional Christchurch icons. Living on the edge of the four avenues I am incredibly passionate about the central city. It is my every day playground: where I eat, work, shop and relax with the family. And so it is incredibly exciting for me to see this missing layer of amenity return. As I have said, Little High Eatery isn’t a new concept, but it is one in Christchurch that has created opportunities for others and provided a space that can be returned to time and time again for enjoyment. It is this that should be celebrated. It has sprouted a whole new layer of the city and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

sing modern materials combined with traditional skills, the expert craftsmen at McDonald & Hartshorne can transform a worn-out piece of furniture into a newly refurbished favourite, or restore an old treasure to its original state. With over 100 years of combined experience in the industry, the team of five qualified upholsterers can cater to any style – whether it’s antique, modern, or retro. “You might have a piece of furniture that has sentimental meaning and you want to bring it back to life,” says Keith Hartshorne, of McDonald & Hartshorne Quality Furniture. “We can collect it from your home and then deliver the transformed product back to you.” Keith, who established the company with Steve McDonald in 2004, provides a free, no-obligation quote for each job. He will examine the piece, working closely with the customer to ensure a one-on-one personal service and a thorough understanding of what is required for the restoration. “It may need new springs, foam or webbings, so it will be stripped back and the parts replaced – as long as it has a good frame to begin from,” he says. And with a van-load of fabric samples to browse through, if there is something else you had in mind, Keith can help you find it at a fabric house showroom. “We have a strong focus on top quality service and take a lot of pride in our work.”

Experiment with negative space/white space: this involves examining how a piece of furniture relates to the architecture of a room. Allowing an area around a statement piece to breathe aka ‘negative space’ can help eye-candy fulfil its potential as the protagonist in the style show. As famous designer Jan Tschichold once said, “Whitespace is to be regarded as an active element, not a passive background”. Consider asymmetry VS symmetry: Symmetry and a balanced composition in a space creates a harmonious almost calming quality while asymmetrical balance in interior design is governed by the eye and therefore is a less formal formula employed when implementing ideas. An asymmetrical arrangement benefits those looking for a more eclectic space and for those happy to playfully procrastinate when it comes to achieving unique forms of balance. Explore colour blocking: generally synonymous with the sartorial realm, colour blocking a room can make an incredible impact. While it can be a fairly complicated interior design challenge to conquer, when done well, the results pay generous dividends. Start by selecting a group of colours that will define the room – from the wallpaper to the furniture, furnishings and accents.

AUTO PLUS AUTO NEWS ROAD TESTS NEW MODELS AUTO EVENTS
ACCELERATING INTO THE FUTURE By Nicholas Henare
I’m still fascinated by the progress of electric cars entering the New Zealand market - the speed of development and the ability of different companies to roll out the new models. At what point do you jump on board with the technology?
A
The electric motor acts as a generator during braking and coasting. It converts kinetic energy into electrical energy that is used to charge the vehicle battery. While driving, there are five selectable levels of energy recuperation dynamically available, ranging from no recuperation (glide mode) to full recuperation (brake mode). These are selected using the gear selector lever: tap the selector lever to the left to increase recuperation. While I was driving I was aware of the decrease in power as I was going along.
It was like watching your iPhone battery decrease and you get a bit jumpy when it hits 25 percent. You can plug it in on any wall socket and carry the cable with you, but it is an unnerving feeling when you don’t have that instant “fuel up” option of a service station. How many times has your phone gone flat when you need it most? The Volkswagen e-Golf is equipped with App-Connect. interactive on the dashboard is just as good as any Volkswagen and I think they do it better than anyone. Overall, I think we are heading in the right direction. With the automated technology being developed at the same time, science fiction is about to become science fact. The day when a driverless, electric car comes to pick you up from the front door may not be that far away. No car costs, no driveway, no garage, and no congested roads. It’s an interesting looking future.

fter I tried the E pass concept at Christchurch International Airport where you can borrow a Volkswagen E-GOLF for the day to try it, I decided to hit the road for the weekend in one. With 85kW and a top speed of 140km it was a little slower than what I’m used to on the petrol version, but it’s the electric side of it I’m more interested in anyway. To charge the e-Golf, simply plug the charger into the vehicle (behind the ‘fuel’ flap). The vehicle is charging when a pulsing green light is activated next to the vehicle charging socket.

avigating the dash to install your phone as part of the setup gets the smile started. I’ve driven Mercedes before, so I was accustomed to getting that done fast by using the centre console dial navigation combined with the screen. It’s when you push the start button that the fun really starts though. I started the week in the GLC which is a sport utility vehicle with very refined power. experienced and so far, it’s the best Mercedes experience I’ve had. I’ve been seduced by the technology; the trim; the alloys; the leather; the handling; the sheer exhilaration of the drive, which offers an adrenaline enhancing feeling comparable to that felt on a racetrack, and I only had these models for a week. I get the feeling that owning one would wed you to the brand for all of eternity. All good things take time. Mercedes, I think your time is now.

boot space, a sunroof and refined lines, LED lighting and the same dash set up as the C43 Coupe. AMG stands for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach, the original Mercedes owners and Aufrecht’s birth town. This is the top of the line Mercedes for style and power in its range. When I moved to the C43 AMG Coupe, I got everything the GLC had with ohhh so much more. The sheer instant power and roar of the engine moved it into the top range of all cars I have driven. Thanks to instant acceleration and smooth handling, I felt constantly connected with the road and 100 percent in control. Of the innovation, Matt Bruce from Mercedes says: “It’s a really exciting time for our brand in New Zealand; 2016 marked the best ever year for Mercedes-Benz and AMG in New Zealand; however, we’re on track to improve on that again in 2017. “We’re offering some of the most innovative and technologically advanced products in the industry, and the new AMG ‘43’ range is driving even greater interest in our high-performance AMG brand. In fact, New Zealand represents the highest selling AMG market, as a percentage of sales, in the world. The sporty AMG C43 and AMG GLC 43 are two of our most desired AMG models this year, and they’re helping to attract younger and new buyers to our brand.” I’m hoping that “younger” means me, because I have certainly been swayed by this year’s feast of automotive tastings. The C43 Coupe and GLC are dynamic in a way that can only be

A CULT FOLLOWING When Ducati launched its retro cool Scrambler range, the Italian brand could not churn them out fast enough. Buyers young and old became seduced by the modern tech, old school flair, and since then, the Scrambler has built its own cult around itself.
T
he learner approved Scrambler Sixty2 featured here is named in honour of the original Ducati Scramblers from, you guessed it, 1962. Being the entry point in the range, the Sixty2 is Ducati’s attempt to make more first timers a part of the Ducati family.

The air cooled 399cc L-Twin engine, containing Ducati’s legendary Desmodromic valves, is half the size of its 803cc big brother. Coupled to a smooth six-speed box, the Sixty2 churns out 29 kW and 34 Nm of torque. Average fuel consumption is rated at 4.6 litres/100km from a 14 litre tank and ABS brakes are standard. Styling wise, it inherits the retro good looks of its gruntier siblings. Wide handle bars and grips feel good in your hands, and the funky offset Casio digital-esque LCD instrumentation houses a speedometer, rev counter, and trip meter. Bike boffins know the Ducati operatic twin sound from a mile away, though the Sixty2 produces a sweet rumble, it is somewhat subdued compared with the Ducati norm. Slicing through inner city traffic is a doddle on the Sixty2. Throttle response is sharp and precise, and having ABS on hand works wonders when orange turns to red. Rear mirrors provide good visibility, though extended hours in the 790mm saddle can leave you feeling a tad sore. However, Ducati’s extensive aftermarket catalogue means you can tailor your Scrambler to your tastes and needs. Though the Sixty2’s main stomping ground will be the city, you will soon be seeking out country back roads and tight switchback hilltop passes. Weighing in at 167kg and packing Pirelli rubber, said roads are devoured with little effort required. The L-Twin really comes alive in the low to mid part of the rev range, the sweet spot being between 4,000 and 8,000rpm. While long journeys are not it’s forte, the Sixty2 is a laugh when you remove its shackles and show it a bit of bendy bitumen. At $13,990 plus ORC, the Scrambler Sixty2 is not cheap, but manages to be well built, easy to ride and above all, epic fun. In fact, regardless of your age or experience, you will be struggling not to giggle, just a little.

WHY WE RIDE It’s Friday morning, the sun is shining, and my phone has just buzzed to tell me I have a new text message. A quick glance at the screen confirms it’s the text I was hoping for. It says, quite simply, “You up for it?” I instantly type my response, “Yep, meet at your place 30 minutes.” By Andy Burchall

nto the garage and I take the dust sheet off my bike. I can feel a stirring in the pit of my stomach as I tie my overnight bag to the tail of my trusty Speed Triple. Four of us are heading for a weekend “sortie” to the top of the South Island. We agree that the pace should be sports touring mode, allowing us to make brisk progress but stay safe. The Lewis Pass (even with the roadworks) is beautiful as the sun shines on the changing terrain. By mid-afternoon, we are in Motueka having a coffee and planning our first pass

over Takaka Hill. I suggest that we adopt a quicker pace over the hill and the other guys raise their eyebrows knowing that I’m keen to exploit the Speed Triple’s torquey engine and fantastic chassis. Afternoon tea is taken sat in the sun in Takaka. We know we have only a short ride through to Collingwood to finish our first day’s riding and already there are tales being told of the day’s exploits. To be cont’d…
