EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

S

ometime recently, I can't even remember when or where, I must have read the question “What would you do if you had no fear? I didn't think much about it at the time, probably skydiving or bungy jumping came to mind. But sometimes little nudges in life don't just disappear and I found the question coming up again and again from my subconscious. It had hooked me, and part of me obviously wanted to know why. I thought about fear – a small word which protects us from danger. Then I thought about the nastier side of the word – the side that snowballs into preventing us from certain actions and decision making. In The Alchemist Paulo Coelho wrote “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” I felt the dawning of a slightly reluctant epiphany. Then as chance would have it I came across another quote, this time from author Diane Conway. “Once when I was fearful of making a mistake with a life decision, my buddy said, 'Diane, you can't shovel the snow until it actually snows. And when it does I'll bring over a shovel, but let me remind you we live in the desert.'” The nudge grew a sharper elbow. I did some searching – what would other people do if they had no fear? Here're a few answers I came across on the internet of all things… “I went out of my comfort zone and went to Europe alone for my 40th birthday. I met an Englishman in Paris, we fell in love and I moved to Paris and got married!” Another auditioned for American Idol. One set up a studio and started painting. Some wrote books. Many changed their careers or started their own businesses. Some learnt to dance. Many, many others said they found the courage just to be themselves. The final prod from this persistent nudge was when I read another example from Conway's interview. She wrote about a Holocaust survivor. “The Nazis took Eleanor captive when she was 19 and she was sent to a concentration camp. When the Allies were coming to liberate them the guards took the prisoners on a 'death march'. Eleanor like the rest was malnourished and wore rags; it was expected they would die on the march. She saw a couple of women escape and thought to herself, I'm terrified they'll shoot me if I try to escape but if I stay on the march I'll surely die. She took one moment of courage and rolled into a ditch when they weren't looking. It saved her life.” On a much less dramatic scale, I am nevertheless following a moment of courage and leaving the wonderful team here at Metropol to pursue studies in a completely different field. That won't be until the end of January though so there will be plenty more thoughts to share before a new editor arrives to continue the amazing, award-winning Metropol journey.

Nathan believed it was the perfect opportunity to photograph some of Christchurch's young talents. “I wanted to photograph these young talented people who create art, whether that's from behind the camera or in front of it. They are all creative in their own way. There is a lot of talent in Christchurch and this was just a very small way to bring some of them together not only to network, but to show others in Christchurch who these people are. I hope to do many more of these shoots in the future.” Photograph: (left to right) Hannah Bird, Photographer - hannahbirdphotography.co.nz Allen Carbon, Photographer - www.facebook.com/thecarbonjournal Chris Jamieson, Model - www.portfoliomodels.co.nz/models/chris-jphp Andrei Talili, Photographer, Cinematographer instagram.com/dreivolution Emma Smart, Voice-over Artist, Photographer, Video Editor emmasmartphotography.co.nz Astrid Ayrey, Artist - instagram.com/astridbrittanyseptemeber/ Hair and Make Up by Leanne Jamieson www.facebook.com/leannejamiesonhairandmakeupartistry Photo by Nathan Adams – www.nathanadamscreative.com

he vibrant, Wellington based Frank Burkitt Band are set to head out on an epic 25 date tour of NZ from top to bottom this summer! After moving to New Zealand in 2014, Frank Burkitt was quick to form 'The Frank Burkitt Band' which includes Cameron Dusty Burnell (Mandolin), Krissy Jackson (Fiddle), Kara Filbey (Backing Vocals and Percussion) and James Geluk (Double Bass). They have been impressing audiences across New Zealand since their debut performance at the Wellington Bluegrass Society in September 2014. Now well known for tightly arranged songs filled with delicious harmony, the band give Burkitt's songs vibrancy and their virtuosic solos accompany his original vocals. The Frank Burkitt Band is not confined to

one genre but it does have a very unique sound and feel at its core. Although heavily influenced by blues, country, bluegrass, swing and Burkitt's love of his native Scottish folk – it is good old fashioned original song-writing backed up by a band that understands perfectly how to add infectious rhythm and groove (Geluk's bass), varied and skilled solo breaks (Burnell and Jackson on fiddle and mandolin) and endorphin-exploding harmonies (Filbey on backing vocals). Intelligent and thought provoking lyrics are served up alongside music that is as emotive as it is foot-tapping. Tickets available through www.frankburkitt.co.uk, at www.eventfinda.co.nz or on the door at each venue. Christchurch: Wednesday 16 DecemberOrange Studios, (Live recording) - $15

OUT & ABOUT

By Hans Petrovic

Seeing the city in a new light… Resilience and Transition was the theme of the Architectural Designers New Zealand Conference held recently in Christchurch, and the wide range of speakers certainly shone a positive, creative light on the future of our earthquake-scarred city, in both its buildings and people.

I

n fact, the conference was all about creative people, the unexpected leaders who have risen from the rubble, and the architecture that will ultimately define this city and impact New Zealand's architectural history. The speakers included architectural historian Dr Jessica Halliday, who is also director of Christchurch's incredibly cool Festival of Transitional Architecture, street artist George Shaw, lighting designer Kevin Cawley, landscape architect Di Lucas, architect David Hill, Kaila Colbin from the Ministry of Awesome, and the Minister for Building and Housing Dr Nick Smith.

Dance O Matic One of the opening speakers was Dr Ryan Reynolds, chairman of the Gap Filler Trust, whose main interest is to open new opportunities for social interaction in this transitional city. The idea is to put something out there and gauge the response. For example, the Dance-O-Mat. At the corner of Gloucester and Colombo Streets, was put out as an open invitation, although there were many who thought people were too

Dr Ryan Reynolds, chairman of the Gap Filler Trust.

Knox Church conservative to dance in public. Because it was coin-operated, they were able to measure its use, which came to 51/2 hours a day, every day, for five years. Even Prince Charles danced on it during a visit in 2012. Another speaker, Kevin Cawley, has also enabled us to see Christchurch in a different light. One of the major projects of the accomplished lighting designer was at the badly damaged Knox Church, on the corner of Victoria Street and Bealey Avenue. Pretty much all that was left was the roof and he was asked to illuminate the church for Christmas. There was no budget for it, so he had to improvise with the already existing lighting. Kevin worked on the principle of Less is More by refocusing the lights, and directing them where he wanted them to go. To see the amazing effects, drive past the church after dark.

with JAMES At just eighteen years of age, Cantabrian, James Munro, has been selected to race for Lamborghini and Giti Tire in a Huracan Super Trofeo at the Sepang 12 Hour Race being held at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur on 13 December.

T

he Sepang 12 Hour Race is considered to be one of the most high profile races in Asia. James, one of the youngest drivers, will join two other drivers, Estonian – Martin Rump and Malaysian – Afiq Ikwhan, to compete against other GT cars such as Ferraris, Porsches, Audis and McLarens. In just two years of car racing, James has won the prestigious NZ Formula Ford Championship in 2013 before dominating the Formula Masters China Series (FMCS) in 2014. He has twice been awarded the Steel Memorial Trophy for Under 21 drivers by Motorsport New Zealand. I caught up with this talented athlete in the lead up to this 5,543km circuit…

We're anticipating speeds of around 280 km/h at Sepang. How old were you when you discovered your love of car racing? I always loved the sport as far as I can remember. Dad was a Formula One fan which exposed me to the sport. I managed to convince Dad to give me a go in a racing kart when I was eleven. That was when I discovered just how great it feels to drive and I've been hooked ever since. Are you any relation to the famous motorcycle racer Burt Munro? I'm not able to confirm this as the records are unclear, but I do know that the Munro side of my family originates from the same area as Burt's! What training have you been doing in the lead up to this grueling endurance race? I do a lot of high intensity training, at around 90% of my maximum heart rate. I train regularly at the gym, and

incorporate running and cycling into my programme. All the training I'm doing now is done with an Elevation Training Mask which simulates altitude training. This simulates the difficulty to breathe in the humid air. Bikram yoga is also part of my training to help adapt to the heat. Tell us about the Lamborghini you will be driving? It's a Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo, a purpose built racing version. It's a carbon fibre chassis with a V10 putting out over 610 hp. The combination of a light car with a lot of power makes it very quick! What speeds will you reach? We're anticipating speeds of around 280 km/h at Sepang. What do you enjoy most about car racing? The best thing is pushing yourself and the car to the limits, always trying to go faster and get the most out of the car.

We currently have ONE APARTMENT and ONE STUDIO now vacant

OUT & ABOUT

You have been coaching in the Formula Masters China Series, how did you become selected for such an esteemed role? I have been coaching for KCMG this season, the same team I won the series with last year. I was drafted in as a replacement for round one as the regular coach was unavailable. They were obviously satisfied that I did a good job and brought me back for the next four rounds. At the final round I was chosen to coach for Volkswagen China's Star Racing Academy which was a great privilege. Your long term goal is to be a world-class race car driver – which championships will you need to win to progress through the ladder system? My ultimate goal is to win the IndyCar championship and the Indy 500. There is a really clear path toward this, beginning with the USF2000 series which I aim to race next year. This is followed by Pro

Mazda and Indy Lights which is the direct feeder to the IndyCar series. They have a very good system where the winner of each championship is awarded a scholarship up to the next championship. What does it take to be a Formula One star? It's very tough to make it to Formula One and requires not only talent, but a lot of financial backing. Nowadays most of the drivers getting into the series are paying millions of pounds a year to race. You have to be in the right place at the right time as well to get a chance and success is no guarantee of making it. IndyCar is a series where more often than not drivers are there based on their racing ability. I've made this my goal as I think it is possible to make it into the series based on ability rather than how much sponsorship you can bring to the table. You are based out of Christchurch at present; how do you fund your sporting endeavours? I've been most fortunate to have secured local sponsorship and support from Archibalds, DJ Hewitt Builders and Consortium Construction, and along

with my parents, this is how I have funded my racing endeavours so far. However, there is a huge cost for me to continue racing internationally next year and to achieve this my immediate priority is to secure further new sponsors. From a PR perspective, I have worked very hard to establish an extremely high profile in a relatively short period of time. As a result of this, I believe there are excellent profile opportunities and benefits for sponsors, particularly for a business that might be exporting into China. I'm confident that I can offer excellent value and anyone interested in considering sponsorship can contact me on phone 027 677 5295, email jamesdmunro@gmail.com or web www.jamesmunro.co.nz/contact. If you could go back and tell your tenyear-old self something what would it be? Sometimes later becomes never! Always take every opportunity as soon as possible. What is one thing that Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? I'm a big Lord of the Rings fan. What's next on the wish list? I've got some upgrades planned for my simulator, I'd like to get a triple screen set up to make the experience more realistic.

hildren grow up and situations change as you get older. I’m the father of two boys, Anthony and Tom, and my assignment was to have a session with Beverley Studios where, at the end, we would have a family portrait. I sat down with Peter for our initial chat. The question in my head was “Why are we talking, I’m just getting a shot of me and the boys?” It’s on reflection that this becomes so much clearer. Peter asks you questions about what your family is all about. What do you love doing together? What characters are you? My family can be like a sack of angry weasels at the best of times. We got the location and time sorted that suited us. On the drive home I realised that that talk had captured what I love about my boys. Us together, at the beach, having fun. We shot at 6.30pm at Cave Rock in Sumner with Marg. She knew my family, she knew that Tom would be his ever vibrant self and she knew how to make the most of us. After we had run through several scenarios over a couple of hours, of what Marg and Peter made feel like a fun night out, Marg casually showed me some of the shots on the camera as we were packing up. I was truly moved. Here was my family, happy and wonderful on the back of a camera. She had captured that moment that I would now have forever. I’m honestly moved by the professionalism and compassion Marg and Peter had for us that night. With the years of experience in dealing with families and ever changing technology they are masters of their craft. I had a friend lose his young boy in a tragic accident recently. Spirit of Christmas captured in lights What is so amazing about the Christchurch Light Show, at 650 Shands Road, Selwyn, is that once you have entered through the large illuminated arches in the driveway each year, you enter a completely different world.

Carl and Maureen Seaward

I

n the main area, you are overwhelmed by more than half a million lights, many of them synchronised to music, on the rooftops and walls of Carl and Maureen Seaward's home and sheds, and then you discover this year's theme – trains of all sizes, carrying Santas and other creatures. Looking back over the past three years, the themes have been a White Christmas, Disney characters and Angels.

Beautifully appointed with award winning gardens located right beside the heart of the Merivale shopping precinct with its many cafes, restaurants, boutique mall, doctor’s surgeries, pharmacies and adjacent to the Metro bus service and taxi rank.

“I've been collecting trains over the last few years and this year decided I wanted a Christmas full of trains. There are a total of 11 trains, including Thomas the Tank Engine and a circus train with animals in cages,” says Carl. In the main open area, five trains chug around on various tracks, illuminated by artificial trees full of coloured lights. Visitors of past years will still find many of their favourite sites there, such as the Halloween display, complete with strobe lights, skeletons, a giant, sabre-toothed tiger and a very creepy ghoul moving in the background. Of course, Carl's Christmas hot rod, the 1929 Durant, is also on display with special lighting. The Seawards' Christmas light show is open from 8.30pm every night until December 30. Admission is $5 per person. Carl explains that Maureen is still suffering from rare and debilitating Lyme disease, which she got from a tick bite in 2009. Some of the admission money will go towards treatment for the illness, which has confined her to a wheelchair.

IN THE CITY WHAT’S ON BARS & CAFES WHAT’S NEW ART RETAIL DOWNTOWN

By Hans Petrovic

Spectrum Street Art Festival Some of the world's leading street artists will be taking part in the SPECTRUM Street Art Festival, which begins on Saturday, December 12, both within the large YMCA building at 12 Hereford Street and on bare outdoor walls across central Christchurch.

A

t the YMCA, visitors will become totally immersed in the exhibition as they move through narrow walkways and tunnels leading them on to spectacular displays created by local and international artists. The first display is a tribute to the humble marker pen; the next is delivered on four large, transparent sheets of Perspex painted with striking imagery by international graffiti art legend Sofles. Each sheet's image can be seen from both sides, these then build to form one united picture. You then move on through a typical, small Kiwi bach into huge spaces presenting every tint and tone of street art. Meanwhile, out on the streets, headline artists will be painting 10 to 15 beautifully designed murals. The artists will include Telmo and Miel from Holland, Seth from France and Cuban-American Jorge

Rodriguez-Gerada. Spectrum Festival director George Shaw's first Christchurch event, Rise, delivered at the Canterbury Museum in December 2013, attracted a quarter of a million visits. The second, also called Spectrum, was the first to be presented in partnership with the YMCA at their amazing venue on Hereford Street. BLUE HUES for summer B

lue hues this summer are inspired by calm oceans and endless sky. Summer blues speak of relaxation and freshness and this season Ketz-ke embraces the turn of temperatures with lifting hem lines and just the right revelation of skin. A Ketz-ke tee is synonymous with comfort, ease and relaxation. The relaxed ďŹ t and soft fabrications will make these tees a staple of your summer wardrobe, easy to wear with shorts, skirts, jeans and swimmers. The Sensation Dress is a simple transitional piece, which will take you eortlessly from the beach to a friend's barbeque. The centre-front split and ankle-grazing length also means you can walk (or dance) freely into the party season.

New Zealand astaxanthin is scientifically formulated by international medical specialist Dr Robert Corish.

t's the red pigment molecule called astaxanthin in the marine micro algae Haematococcus pluvialis. It became known as the King of Carotenoids and the planet's most powerful antioxidant around about four years ago after Dr Joseph Mercola described its potency in a TV slot on Dr Oz. The effects of astaxanthin were validated in more than 500 scientific studies including 100 human clinical studies: ! 500 times stronger than vitamin E ! 6000 times stronger than vitamin C ! 800 times stronger than CoQ10 ! 550 times stronger than green tea catechins. It is still the most powerful natural antioxidant and free radical scavenger on the planet because, unlike many antioxidants that deal with one free radical at a time, astaxanthin's molecular structure lets it capture and neutralise multiple free radicals simultaneously. Because it is fat and water soluble, it can span the outer and inner membranes of the body's cells, preventing free radicals from entering cells and causing damage. Unlike other antioxidants that, under certain circumstances can become pro-oxidants and behave as free radicals themselves, astaxanthin cannot. Nor can it be converted to vitamin E, which is dangerous in high doses, like some antioxidants. Astaxanthin is also one of the few antioxidants that can penetrate the eye and blood-brain barrier. Today, science has also discovered that astaxanthin has many other validated benefits that almost outweigh its role as a potent antioxidant. Clinical research proves impressive results for supporting a healthy heart, healthy HDL (cholesterol) and triglyceride balance; healthy joints, muscles and fast recovery from exercise; stamina, endurance and reduced fatigue; healthy eyes and vision; premature ageing prevention; plus it acts as a natural sun filter for the inner and outer layers of skin. The purest, most natural astaxanthin is manufactured in Nelson, New Zealand, at state-of-the-art facilities, where it is sustainably extracted from red micro algae. Astaxanthin is available at Health 2000 stores at South City, Avonhead, Barrington, Merivale, Northlands, Riccarton and Rangiora. Resource: Health 2000

Learn tips & tricks on looking your best Having worked in stage wardrobe and makeup on the road with the likes of Sinead O'Connor, Nicky Blue is an old hand when it comes to all things in appearance enhancement and makeup. In recent years the brow has become a focus but Nicky says it's always a major feature that makeup artists have played up to give the face strength, dimension and balance.

B

ut what if you don't have good natural brows to work with? This is where Bespoke Cosmetic comes in. Bespoke offers a very 'tailored to suit' personal experience, to help women (from all walks of life and ages) enhance their appearance. Nicky offers a diverse range of cosmetic services targeting key areas women want to improve, from Micro-pigmentation to makeup advice on application and products plus Skin Needling (Collagen Induction Therapy). Micro-pigmentation (cosmetic tattoo) replicates and defines brows, lashes, beauty spots and lips by placing pigments into the skin in a hair stroke or powder-fill skin tone effect. Imagine having makeup that stays in place. No more worry about your brows rubbing off and great for the holidays to be always looking made up and ready to go. These procedures can also be used for scar revision and post-surgery remediation to give

back a look that is lost. Nicky's work as a freelance commercial makeup artist for many years has lead her to giving makeup lessons ranging from "the beauty basics" to helping women "get current and comfortable" with their makeup skills and updates. "Many women feel intimidated by makeup but really yearn for some tips and tricks to nail the appropriate look whether it be 'back to work' or 'back to great selfesteem and self-confidence'," says Nicky. "What puts many off getting the help is feeling on show in a public setting - come to Bespoke and it will be easy, private, fun and fulfilling!" Excellent care from group practice Cute faces of babies gaze down from the walls - all welcomed into the world with the specialist care provided by the team at Christchurch Obstetrics and Gynaecology Associates.

he practice uses a team approach, with their group of specialists each bringing their own unique set of skills in both obstetrics and gynaecology medical services. This approach allows them to both support each other and provide the very best care for their patients. “We have the best results when we work together,” says founder Colin Conaghan, with shared care alongside midwives encouraged and supported. COGA are also able to offer one of the very latest prenatal tests, the percept cellfree DNA prenatal test. Using maternal blood they are able to check for any abnormal genetic problems early in the pregnancy, providing a less invasive and very reliable method of testing. “We are hopeful that this test will be affordable for the general New Zealand population in the future,” says Colin. “We have a long standing historical relationship with Fertility Associates,” says Colin, their patients often utilising the expertise offered by both practices. “When you have gone to so much trouble to become pregnant you want to provide your baby with the best care possible.” Colin, and his colleagues, Angela Beard, Geeta Singh, Jane Fielder and Michelle Bailey, have all welcomed the arrival of new techniques in the treatment of menstrual disorders such as heavy menstrual bleeding. While hysterectomy or hormone treatment were the standard forms of treatment for many years, less invasive surgical procedures, such as endometrial ablation, are now providing a simpler alternative. “Endometrial ablation has an

CANTERBURY BRIDE A WEDDING IN

QUEENSTOWN?

Last year Queenstown hosted a staggering 834 weddings generating around $58 million in revenue for the resort town.

Q

ueenstown Wedding Association (QWA) president Sarah Arkin says the figures are set to keep rising. “I can confidently say that we're on track for at least another 10 per cent growth in the number of weddings taking place in Queenstown this year,” says Sarah. “Couples from all over the world come to Queenstown for the same reason – its incredible natural beauty.” Its universal appeal can be put down to many things, mainly centring around the town's breathtaking scenery - but what truly sets Queenstown apart as a top wedding destination of choice is its unique ability to offer a sensational allyear-round experience. 50 December 3, 2015 Metropol

Queenstown's distinct four seasons attract visitors from all corners of the globe - summers are warm and bright, autumn is crisp and vibrant, winters are snow-capped and enchanting and spring is fresh and fragrant with blossoms. Couples travel from as far as Asia, Europe or the United States to wed, whatever the season. The QWA reports increased numbers of couples travelling from India and China, as well as Singapore and Hong Kong. Increased flights across the Tasman from Melbourne, Sydney and Gold Coast direct to Queenstown entices many Australians across the ditch for their big day. With same-sex marriages still unrecognised in Australia, New Zealand

welcomes gay couples with open arms and many cite Queenstown as a super gayfriendly destination. Besides the beautiful backdrop and friendly welcome, Queenstown offers an adrenaline rush like no-where else. It's not unheard of for couples to strap themselves together and throw themselves off a bridge or out of a plane, screaming “I dooooooo”. Less adventurous couples don't need to raise their heart rates quite as much to add in some fun elements. There's plenty more leisurely activities such as mountain biking, wine tours, boat cruises, golfing and skiing. Visit www.queenstownweddings.org for a full directory of wedding professionals available in Queenstown.

Method: Grease and line the loaf pan with cling wrap or baking paper. Allow a generous overhang to help remove the log. Roughly chop the pistachios and lightly dry roast them in a pan. Place the eggs, egg yolks and sugar substitute in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of boiling water, making sure that the bowl does not touch the water. Immediately reduce to a simmer and whisk the egg mixture for about 5 minutes or until it is of a light custard consistency and can form a figure 8 on the surface.

Remove from the heat and continue whisking until it cools. Set aside with a cover of cling film on the surface to prevent a skin forming. Whip the cream and gently fold into the custard mixture with the pistachios, rose water and half of the raspberries. Pour the mixture into the prepared loaf pan, cover and freeze overnight or until it is firm. Remove from the freezer and allow to stand for at least 5 minutes before turning onto a serving plate. Top with the remaining raspberries.

RECIPE from the new cook book: Carbs by numbers low carb recipe options - Christmas by Sandra Dunbar and Meg Pell

ROASTED SWEET POTATO, PICKLED BEETROOT AND HORSERADISH YOGHURT Ingredients: 270g sweet potato, fresh 50g beetroot, fresh 40g Greek yoghurt, 2 teaspoons (10ml) balsamic vinegar 2 teaspoons (12g) horseradish cream a pinch (0.4g) salt a grind (0.7g) pepper 40g rocket 20g pumpkin seeds 1 and a half tablespoons (30ml) olive oil Method: Preheat oven to 200°C Peel and slice the sweet potato into eight discs. Toss with the olive oil, salt and pepper. Place on a baking tray and roast in the oven for about 30 minutes, turning once until cooked and nicely golden. Meanwhile to make the pickle – grate the beetroot and add the balsamic vinegar. Toast the pumpkin seeds in a pan being careful not to burn them. Combine the yoghurt and horseradish and set aside. Scatter the rocket on a platter and place the discs of sweet potato on the rocket.

at breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. So the saying goes and many agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, fuelling our bodies for the day ahead. For a healthy start to your day, the team

at The Villas has come up with something a little different to get you started in the morning. The Bircher Muesli Griddle Cakes are a cheeky partnership of our delicious homemade muesli, soaked overnight in apple juice and yoghurt, then combined with our classic pancake recipe. Add fresh seasonal fruit and our house-made lemon and honey labne (which is yoghurt that has been strained to remove its whey, resulting in a thicker consistency). It's a perfect combination and a little bit of something different from The Villas Breakfast Chefs. Our breakfast menu is full of classic favourites and the odd surprise like the Bircher Muesli Griddle Cakes, made with love, quality and locally sourced ingredients. Grab some good friends and relax into the morning at The Villas where excellent service, coffee and food are dished up every day.

Top with a teaspoon of horseradish yoghurt. When just ready to serve, add a spoon of beetroot pickle (this is to ensure the beetroot does not have time to bleed through the yoghurt). Scatter with the toasted pumpkin seeds.

HOME EXTERIORS INTERIORS BUILDING OUTDOORS KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

ARCHITECTURE AWARDS RECOGNISE THE YEAR'S BEST BUILDINGS Twenty-eight projects, ranging from a combined train station and tertiary institution in south Auckland to a showroom in Shanghai, and from a radiotherapy unit in Tauranga to an apartment building on the Wellington waterfront, have won awards in the country's premier architectural competition, the New Zealand Architecture Awards. The winners in the long-running awards programme, which is run by the New Zealand Institute of Architects, were announced recently. Pictured above: The 2015 New Zealand Architecture Medal went to the new Blyth Performing Arts Centre at Iona College, Havelock North, designed by Stevens Lawson Architects.

T

he top award, the 2015 New Zealand Architecture Medal, went to the new Blyth Performing Arts Centre at Iona College, Havelock North, designed by Stevens Lawson Architects. The same practice won a New Zealand Architecture Award for another building at the same school the Iona College Information Resource Centre. This year's Architecture Awards saw the introduction of three best-of-category awards named for eminent New Zealand architects: the John Scott Award for public architecture, won by the Christchurch Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre, designed by Patterson Associates; the Sir Ian Ath eld Award for housing, won by Lyttelton Studio Retreat, designed by Bull O'Sullivan Architecture; and the Sir Miles Warren Award for commercial architecture, won by the Stranges and Glendenning Hill Building Replacement, designed by Sheppard & Rout Architects. Awards jury convenor, Auckland architect Pete Bossley, said there was an abundance of buildings available for consideration by the judging panel, which also included architects Sharon Jansen from Wellington, Jeremy Smith from Nelson, and Damien Eckersley from Brisbane.

The John Scott Award for public architecture, won by the Christchurch Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre, designed by Patterson Associates. The tough calls began on day one of shortlisting and continued to the very end, Bossley said. It has been a strong year in New Zealand architecture, and the buildings we saw amazed and enticed us. It was a privilege to visit them, and a challenge to judge them. Christchurch Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre, the winner of the John Scott Award for Public Architecture, is, the jury said, an exhilarating contemporary take on the traditional garden greenhouse and an adroit and sympathetic piece of place-making. The elegant form is an inspiring contribution to the public realm in Christchurch, the jury said.

ARCHITECTURE AWARDS

A

nother Christchurch project to win one of the new named awards was the Lyttelton Studio Retreat, which won the Sir Ian Athfield Award for housing. “This building is a labour of love and a testament to the design capacity, bloodyminded commitment and appetite for sheer hard work of its architect,” the jury said. With a nod to architect Michael O'Sullivan's ancestry, the jury said the building, “with its robust and straightforward shell and finely crafted interior, perfectly expresses the dichotomy of pugnacity and poetry of a Hibernian heritage.” Completing the Christchurch clean sweep of named awards, the Stranges and Glendenning Hill Building Replacement received the Sir Miles Warren Award for commercial architecture. “Client and architect set out to make a cosmopolitan, industrious and joyful place on a prominent urban site, and they have succeeded admirably,” the jury said. “With its interior courtyard offering sanctuary from traffic and street noise the building is a modern village with an urbane disposition.” The New Zealand Architecture Awards is a programme operated by the New Zealand Institute of Architects with the support of Resene, which has sponsored the Architecture Awards programme for 25 years.

Be wowed by the magic of Christmas “Absolutely magical.” There is no other way to describe the feeling as you enter The Christmas Hut's new showroom on Sawyers Arms Road. This is a purpose-built store inspired by the beautiful Christmas stores of the Black Forest in Germany and a vision realised for Christabel and Peter Blacklock, both passionate lovers of everything about Christmas.

“C

hristmas brings joy and excitement, magic and beauty. We wanted our store to tell that story,” say Chris and Pete. And indeed it does. The craftsmanship in the building with its huge exposed laminated beams is truly reminiscent of European alpine chalets. “There is 25 tonnes of timber in those beams,” Pete explains with great pride, “and we have exactly the space we wanted to show off all our wonderful products.” The fascinating, twinkling Christmas displays do indeed conjure up a sense of euphoria and well-being. Towering Christmas trees are adorned with

decorations of every shape and size. Every window, wall and surface is covered with wreaths, with nativity scenes, with

greenery, with reindeer and Santas and a myriad of other Christmas objects to grace the tree, mantelpiece or table. “We just love seeing the delight on our customers' faces when they walk in here,” exclaims Chris. “People often say they could lose themselves here for hours. That's what Christmas is all about.” The Christmas Hut is located at 39 Sawyers Arms Rd (the Northlands Mall end). Open 10am – 6pm – Monday – Wednesday and Friday; 10am – 8pm – Thursday and 10am – 4pm Saturday and Sunday. Plenty of parking onsite. Also visit the website to buy online www.thechristmashut.co.nz.

Designed for inside or outside use, each bronze sculpture requires many hours of detailed work. Making great coffee simple

M

att from The Crowded House knows his coffee. With a barista background it wasn't until he tried the Opale coffee pod machine for himself that he began to appreciate that it really did make exceptional coffee. “It's a fantastic machine - totally perfect for home and for the office,” says Matt. “It's a really clean simple system that enables you to make great Italian coffee easily.”

Designed and built in Italy, the Opale uses two solid brass thermoblocks in its design. Water is heated by being pulled through the thermoblocks, so it's ready to go in just a couple of minutes and uses less energy than heating a tank of water. Critically for Matt, it also runs at the same pressure as a professional machine, meaning you can extract and steam at the same time and make many coffees on the run with no delays.

“A good kitchen can add value to your home. That's a point the majority of home buyers and sellers alike recognise,” says Adrian Kay, managing director of kitchen specialists, Dream Doors Christchurch.

THE POWER OF A QUALITY KITCHEN

A

drian adds a few words of advice, “Consider this: a badlydesigned kitchen, a kitchen in poor condition or with a dated colour scheme can let a whole house down, make it harder to sell and even seriously devalue a home.” Dream Doors offer both a refurbishment service and a new kitchen service to ensure homeowners can completely transform the room that many people regard as the most important room in the home. “People want their kitchens to feel open and spacious and to utilise space effectively with excellent function and flow. That's what separates a good, welldesigned kitchen from a bad one.” Dream Doors do more than just dreamy doors. They encompass the entire kitchen fit-out from design to install, project managing the process throughout. They can organise the plumbing, the electrics, the lighting, top brand appliances and even the splash-

Dream Doors offer literally thousands of door combinations and colour schemes to choose from - from contemporary to traditional, from town to country. All doors and units are custom-made in Christchurch from local materials and using European fixtures and fittings which means people get only the best quality, all with a ten-year guarantee. “We use quality products, which come at a price, but that is certainly better than fitting below-par kitchens that ultimately don't make the grade and end up costing more in the long term. We deal in quality and nothing less.” Focusing on quality and service has always been a key ingredient of Dream Doors' approach to kitchens and, whether it's a facelift or a fresh start, now you can dare to dream about your kitchen's potential. TEAM BUILDING! They're not a tight 5. They are actually a tight 13, but the people at Trent Building Solutions function together just as a rugby team does led by their captain Richard Trent and all seeking the same end result – in their case building a high-quality home.

“A

number of our builders do play rugby,” company owner Richard Trent explains. “We put a great deal of emphasis on working together as a team offering homeowners the benefit of our experience and of our understanding that every build is different.” Founded in 2008 by Richard and Aimee Trent, Trent Building Solutions is a well-established and award-winning boutique building company that specialises in architectural homes and hill

builds. A clue to their operation lies in their name. They do indeed offer solutions through the personal touch of caring about each individual client and what they require in a home. For Richard, dealing directly with clients is of paramount importance. He will sit down with you at the start of the process to find out exactly what you want to achieve and will guide you to the solutions that will result in a house tailor-made for you. The personal touch continues once work has

started with Richard 'on the tools' himself several days a week, as well as catching up with you the client every week onsite to discuss progress and any concerns. “We like to go the extra mile for clients to ensure that building their home is as stress-free as possible and we take the time to do things right.” Contact Trent Building Solutions on (03) 359 8908 or 027 518 1346. Nissan wins International Pick-up award

T

he all-new Nissan NP300 Navara has won the coveted International Pick-up award 2016 at a ceremony in Lyon, France. Nissan's recently-launched pick-up fought off stiff competition from the Mitsubishi L200 and Ford Ranger with judges praising its superior on-road and off-road capabilities, strong engine performance and payload capacity. The new NP300 Navara underwent the rigorous International Pick-up testing process, each being judged for its offroad ability, on-road performance and its value for money. They were also tested on their ability as a workhorse, which included comparing towing capabilities.

The new NP300 Navara delivers new levels of crossover-inspired comfort and refinement while maintaining the Navara's acclaimed off-road ability, durability and load capacity. Its robust chassis introduces a host of new features, including an all-new five-

link rear suspension for the Double Cab model and an impressive load bed, which is 67mm longer than the previous model. The wealth of innovative and affordable technology such as Around View Monitor (AVM) and Forward Emergency Braking (FEB), designed to further improve driveability and practicality, are also unique to the pick-up market. Philippe Guérin-Boutaud, Corporate Vice President Nissan LCV BU, said, “This prestigious award celebrates Nissan's 80 years of pick-up expertise. Rigorous testing by International Pick-up of the Year jurors illuminated the tough and innovative character of the all-new Navara.”

If you can dream it, By Nicholas Henare

C

learwater resort was the venue for an evening of the finer things in life, champagne, watches, the who’s who and Ferrari. That’s where I fell in love with her. She was Italian and of a pedigree I’ve never encountered before. Her lines, her shape… truly a beauty to behold. Among others she stood out. Far superior to anything I had met before. She tempted me with her top off… the F12 Ferrari spider 458. There were other models present but I only had eyes for her. I met with Raiza Coote from Continental Ferrari in Auckland and begged an introduction to this Italian goddess on the next Friday, my allocated day to try one of these beautiful cars. I felt like I was asking for a date with Cindy Crawford. Now for those of you into cars the Ferrari Spider is a 45 litre V8 with 570 horsepower on a midengine, 7 speed dual clutch, 0 to 100 Kmph in 3 seconds, 5 seconds for me, a piece of art.

Invitations to Ferrari cocktail parties do not cross my path every day. When the invitation says formal, I dress formal; I really had to didn’t I? It’s Ferrari.

you can do it. Enzo Ferrari

I have driven others but nothing has come close to the experience. It handles like a dream. It feels like you are James Bond. It’s everything I ever dreamed it could be. For those of you in my age group, who grew up with Magnum PI driving a Ferrari and wished you could be him. I always wondered why the car was held in such high regard. All I can say is - you have to drive one to understand. The response, the sound, the feel… tactile. I took my two boys for a spin and they didn’t want to get out, and you could understand why, I certainly didn’t want to remove myself from the driver’s seat. Once I hit the open road the experience became more visceral. I felt tethered like the horse emblazoned on the familiar logo. My heart raced as I sought to unleash all its wonderful engine power. I couldn’t… not legally anyway.

Quality European Cars

My heart raced as I sought to unleash all its wonderful engine power. I once heard of someone who lost his licence driving from Christchurch to Dunedin. I tip my hat to you sir! I think if I’d had the time I probably would have lost it by Ashburton. I have friends who own Ferraris and I now envy them. I didn’t before but that was because I’ve never driven this wonderful piece of engineering. If you ever get the opportunity to get behind the wheel of one, you must do it. It’s a once in a lifetime experience. It’s a symbiotic relationship between the driver, the road and a dream. If you own one, kudos to you. If you don’t, aim for the stars.
