EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE
hile I was thinking about a topic for this column I heard snippets of a conversation going on here in the office: “I hate skyping.” “Yeah me too, you may as well facetime.” “You know there's an app so you can play Angry Birds while you're on the phone.” And on it went, with lots of words we had never even heard of five or so years ago. It reminded me of a comment I read recently in OxfordWords blog which went something like this… “I don't like reading about all of the new words being admitted to dictionaries. Essentially, there is now a lot of trash cluttering up our nice, clean dictionaries.” The words the blogger was referring to are the latest in the Oxford Dictionaries update. So are you ready to fangirl over the 2015 dictionary update? Abso-bloodylutely. They've got some awesomesauce new words – no, rly – that will inform and entertain. Yes, that's the news from OxfordWords. If you want to describe something as excellent you can use awesomesauce; on the other hand, anything of a poor or disappointing standard is weak sauce. Weak sauce came first, and has a more comprehensible origin as a metaphor. And why say banter when you can save a syllable with bants? Manspreading, the practice whereby a man adopts a sitting position with his legs wide apart, in such a way as to encroach on an adjacent seat or seats has been admitted, along with brain fart (temporary mental lapse), bitch face (a scowling facial expression), bruh (a male friend), butthurt (overly or unjustifiably offended), fur baby (a furry pet animal), MacGyver (Make or repair an object in an improvised or inventive way), mkay (non-standard spelling of OK, typically used at the end of a statement to invite agreement, approval, or confirmation), rando (a person one does not know, especially one regarded as odd, suspicious, or engaging in socially inappropriate behaviour) and swole (extremely muscular). If you've become hangry (bad tempered or irritable as a result of hunger) whilst reading this you might want to whip up something cheffy (relating to, or characteristic of, a chef) and melty (partially melted). If you're heading to a restaurant beware of cakeage (a charge for bringing your own cake). If you are a pedant and these new words are winding you up, don't rage-quit (angrily abandon an activity or pursuit that has become frustrating) chillax and check the time – it could be wine o'clock. Mic drop! (Used to emphasise that a discussion is at an end after a definitive or particularly impressive point has been made). Yes, all of these fascinating new words are now in the Oxford, but your spell-checker might still have a beef.

Frank Burkitt Band to tour
A
fter moving to NZ in 2014, the very talented Scotsman, Frank Burkitt, was quick to form the Frank Burkitt Band, now well known for tightly arranged songs filled with gorgeous harmonies. After impressing audiences around the country they are about to release their debut album, 'Fools and Kings' and head out on a massive nationwide tour. While the sound of the band is not confined to one genre, it does have a very unique sound and feel at its core. Although heavily influenced by blues, country, bluegrass, swing and Burkitt's love of his native Scottish folk – it is good old fashioned original song-writing backed up by a band that understands perfectly how to add infectious rhythm and groove, varied and skilled solo breaks, with

he World Busters Festival has developed into a performance extravaganza that is setting new entertainment standards for New Zealand. Starting from a small group of humble street performers in 1994, the 23rd edition will feature a smorgasbord of genres, from circus to cabaret, from burlesque to theatre, from music to aerial acrobatics. The 67 performers from 13 countries will well and truly deliver on the festival's slogan to “Experience It All” with over 650 shows, across 11-days and nights from January 14-24. The World Busker Festival programme for the 2016 Festival has been released. Once again it will have a strong presence in Hagley Park but there will also be a return back to the city with five venues around Christchurch. With the announcement of the acts, the Festival Director Glen Pickering is encouraging the people of Christchurch to go to the festival website www.worldbuskersfestival.com and start planning and booking. “Each year we hear stories of people missing out. It's a highlight on many people's entertainment calendars, so don't leave it until January to book your seats.”

usinesses in Christchurch have shown remarkable resilience since the earthquakes rattled us ve years ago. Local salon, True Grit is a prime example of such determination and regeneration. The salon, owned by local stylist Jacqui Victor, had just completed a major re t when the earthquake struck in September 2010, causing the salon to become red stickered. It was then reduced to ruins the day the February 2011 quake struck. Jacqui and her team moved out of the city, trading in a number of sites before settling where they now are, back at the site of the ruined salon on Manchester Street. They are the rst salon to go back into the centre of Christchurch and their new purpose-built and beautifully designed salon will impress.

The self-guided tour of approximately 160kms commenced and finished in the delightful village of Chissay. Q SARA &FAULL AS OUT & ABOUT
with
ara Faull has been writing all her life. She has been a successful fashion editor, stylist and homes editor for More and Next magazines for many years. However it is her debut book 'Yes, M.A.D.A.M!’ (Middle-Aged, (ex) Dieting And Menopausal) A Journal of Acceptance' that has captivated like-aged women from the moment they begin turning the pages of her witty, insightful, and empowering book. ‘Yes, Madam!’ is an honest, stripped back look at what it's like to be middle aged in 2015. It covers diverse subjects from driving and dieting, motherhood and friendships, gym-going, city-shifting and heel heights to hot flushes. Sara's book is compelling. Her heart-felt writing style will have you laughing out loud one moment and quietly nodding in contemplative agreement the next. This is a book that modern, savvy, middle aged women have been waiting for. It will make you realise you are not alone, as it discusses many modern mysteries and so-called taboo subjects. I caught up with Sara, who is now living back in Christchurch, to discover a little more about this inspiriting woman…
You have been a journalist since your early twenties, what do you enjoy most about this demanding career? I have always loved words, and magazine journalism is great if you like variety, telling people's stories and seeing the finished product in print. I have a low boredom threshold and a need to finish things, so it's a perfect fit for me. What inspired you to write your debut book? Actually, 'Yes, Madam!' was 'inspired' by disappointment! When we relocated to
14 November 19, 2015 Metropol
Auckland three years ago, we lived in a very trendy but youth-fuelled suburb, which made me really notice my age along with the recurring ache in my left knee. Then when I went job-hunting I was amiably advised that the magazine industry was now also the domain of the young and trendy. 'Over 50' meant not just “over the hill” but “totally invisible”! 'Yes, Madam!' was my personal journal of acceptance of my age and stage - my need to wear lower heeled shoes and elastic waistbands. Along the way, I
discovered just how empowering being a 50-something woman could be. It is an account of your journey in life; was it daunting to reveal many of your personal musings? No, I found it liberating to write with such bruising honesty. Some have called me “brave” (intimating idiocy) to reveal so much, but I hoped that my sincerity might resonate with other women. It is my belief that we could all benefit by talking more openly about the challenges of the ageing process.
OUT & ABOUT
What was the feedback from your husband and family like when you told them about the book? My husband listened and then smiled… since he knows the kind of (oversharing) woman he's been with for 31 years. My four adult children were incredibly positive and supportive, as was my sister who insisted I keep writing when the enthusiasm flagged. You touch on a variety of subjects, which together encapsulate modern, middle-aged women; as a group what do you think we need to challenge in society? Oh, where do I start? I am proud to be part of the Baby Boomer generation (those born between 1946 and 1964), which is one of the biggest demographic groups in the world and I believe it is our collective responsibility to challenge the ENTIRE ageing process. Life cannot be edited like a facebook post and neither can the challenge of ageing. Middle-aged women need to be “seen” for much more than fading looks and valued for their wisdom and experience. I would love to see ageing treated with 'optimistic reality' - peppered with an endless supply of jokes and good humour of course. More loving, more hugging, less airbrushing! What has the feedback from readers been like to date? Almost everyone comments on the honesty and humour, and immediately think of friends who would enjoy it. Many say they laugh and cry. A very few don't get the bits on dieting and self-esteem (lucky them!). Unanimously, everyone loves the whimsical look of the book and the joyous illustrations by my clever friend Celia Allison, of Cecily fame. These drawings have been so popular that we have reprinted them in card form.
Where can people get your book? Locally it is available from Quinn’s and independent bookshops like Piccadilly Books, Scorpio Books and The Store @ Tai Tapu. Celia and I are having a launch this week in Lyttelton which I am excited about and I am also selling “Yes, Madam!” by gathering together groups of women for bubbles and book readings, which is a lot of fun. What is your proudest achievement? Hands down, having the same, lovely man navigate 31 years with me despite my hormones and the four astonishing human beings we have raised together. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something, what would it be? Get off those ruddy scales and start appreciating every second of your precious life. What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? That I am a lover of Regency romances – from Jane Austin to Georgette Heyer. There is just something about a man in a well-tied cravat, shiny hessian boots and tight breeches… What are you like at parties? Occasionally shy, often too loud and always foul-mouthed, although I am trying to work on this 'bl**dy' habit of mine.
What's next on your wish list? Well, my passions are 'words' and 'wardrobes' so I would love to capitalise on this fashion fixation and my skills as a stylist, particularly helping busy women over 50 sort out their wardrobes so that they feel great no matter what their size. I would also love to write another book showcasing other women's stories. Wise women, brave women, outrageous women… and if all else fails, maybe I'll start on that bodice ripper of a Regency novel but this time I have promised my progeny that it will be under a pseudonym! Sara can be contacted at sarafaull1@gmail.com

A PURE mission When Adele first sang those famous words “Hello, it's me, I was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet”, perhaps she was actually talking to her hair when it was in its most beautiful, natural state. If you're looking for a way to call back that hair you used to have before the world of gross chemicals and treatments came along, then you should hit these guys up.
I
t's awesome that over the last few years, we have finally realised how eating things like artificial additives and preservatives aren't the best things for your body. What's even more awesome though is that places like Pure Hair and Body are now providing a way to do the same for the outside - namely your hair and skin. With three stores across Christchurch in Cashmere, Rangiora, and the City Centre, Pure Hair and Body is on a mission to provide a place that can give you that high-end salon treatment, without the dangerous chemicals and treatments that are bad for both you and the planet. Whether it is a cut, colour, natural hair treatment, make-up, or extensions, Pure Hair and Body can help you out. What makes them awesome is the
team. They are passionate about what they do and what they stand for. These girls are firm believers in the power of natural beauty products that are not only good for you, but for the planet as well. They are pretty cool chicks to be honest, and what makes them even cooler is that they believe that the testing of beauty products on cute little bunnies and such is a no-no. This is why they've made sure that every last one of their products that they use have not been tested on animals.

unway and the Crusaders are set to collaborate together for 2016, with a sense of excitement at bringing both prestigious parties together. In just over one year Runway has landed international modelling contracts for local models, with Alex Weber and Jovanne Pieterse winning the title of fresh faces at the Milan International Supermodel Search. “Models can only dream of having such strong model mentors but as they say in this industry, it's not what you know, it's who you know,” says Marie, who works alongside her 2IC Peter McCleod. At the Runway hub, Marie will train their models for six months, prepping them for what lies ahead on the international circuit. “They need to have thick skin in the industry and know that 90% in modelling is rejection and 10% is modelling,” says Marie. Marie began her own modelling career at the age of 13 and now has 25 years' experience in the industry, with major lucrative modelling agencies backing her on international levels. Her agency facility is available for hire, and all fashion photography is taken by Marie in their in-house studio, with Marie the choreographer, runway trainer, makeup artist, and fashion photographer on site. SAY IT IN SILK: The beauty of NZ Pearson&Brown was born out of a desire to share New Zealand with the rest of the world…
“E
Experiencing the devastating earthquakes of 2011 made us really take notice of our beautiful natural environment and forced us to appreciate what we had previously taken for granted,” they said. The duo say we are lucky to live in New Zealand and live the life we do. “Travelling up and down and in and out of our country is an absolute joy. There's always something to notice: the green grass and blue sky smell when you get off a plane, fresh snow on the mountains as you drive to work, the unique intensity of the sunlight whilst walking the dog - so we started to record these moments.”

GET STARTED EARLY At what age do you start thinking of orthodontic treatment for your child? In most cases the earlier the better.
“W
e offer what we call interceptive treatment,” says Ronald Sluiter of Orthodontix, with a simple intervention early on meaning you can avoid more complicated orthodontic work years later. “With early treatments we try to avoid orthodontic treatment altogether.” There are a number of issues that can arise in a child's mouth which parents are able to recognise if they know what to look for. Ankylosed baby teeth is one of these, where the baby tooth is fused to the bone. As the teeth surrounding it continue to grow and move, the ankylosed tooth remains the same, giving it a shrunken appearance. Another easily recognised sign that orthodontic treatment may be needed is a cross bite, where one or two of the top front teeth are positioned behind the

Ankylosis front bottom teeth when the mouth is closed. A cross bite can be easily corrected by the use of a plate in just a few months, negating the need for braces later on. School dental clinics often pick up issues that are a little harder to notice on a day to day basis, such as ectopic eruptions. In this case the tooth is not in the correct position, and if left has the possibility of impacting on other teeth surrounding it. Local author going strong Clare Erasmus, a local mum, teacher and author has just released her latest children's book Kia Kaha's Christmas Cheer
C
lare was born in South Africa. She lectured Sociology at the University of Kwa Zulu Natal before relocating to live and work in Taiwan and Australia. Growing up Clare always wrote poetry and it was in Taiwan that she wrote her rst published children's story. Since then she has published numerous books, ranging from teacher's guides to story books. Her latest series, Kia Kaha, were presented to the royal couple the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their son Prince George on their recent visit.
Author Clare Erasmus.
Kia Kaha, the Cathedral Mouse On the 22nd February 2011, life in Christchurch changed for everyone. This was due to the devastation of the earthquakes. The rst Kia Kaha story emerged in an attempt to help young children recognise the social solidarity that was evidenced when this signi cant disaster took place. Everyone was required to stand and stay strong, to maintain hope and faith. Kia Kaha, Maori for, 'staying strong', is the Cathedral Mouse who helped to spread this word.
Kia Kaha's Brand New House Two years later Clare wrote a sequel to this story which highlighted how far the Christchurch community had come. Kia Kaha, the Cathedral Mouse, moved into his new iconic and world famous, Transitional Cathedral. This is a cathedral made from cardboard tubes. It highlights new landmarks that children and adults now have in their community.
A Royal gift for George
Kia Kaha's Christmas Cheer This is the latest adventure of an endearing little personality named Kia Kaha the Cathedral Mouse, who currently lives with his friends in the awe-inspiring Transitional Cathedral of Christchurch. Once again, when faced with challenges, Kia Kaha demonstrates that the best gifts come from the heart. Kia Kaha, together with mice and people promote the value of community concern, a very important message during the Festive Season. Giveaway Metropol has a copy of 'Kia Kaha's Christmas Cheer' to give away. Contemporary art & sculpture Spring has definitely sprung in Wanaka at Gallery-33. Some of the best modern contemporary art and sculptures from all over New Zealand can be found at Wanaka's only contemporary art gallery, which features a huge range of media from New Zealand artists.
O
wners Peter Gregg and Norma Dutton, and gallery manager Jane Shriffer are continually receiving new and exciting works from their artists so if you are heading down that way soon you will be in for a treat. Running until 27 November for three weeks is a sculpture exhibition entitled Three-D. The works are from three wellknown sculpture artists: Josh Olley, Bing Dawe and Llew Summers and according to Gregg, this is an exhibition not to be missed. “All three senior artists are unique in their approach and it's often hard to get such a high quality combination. Summers' works are often figurative and set in bronze, whilst Dawe's work is wall mounted and focused on environmental concerns around protecting small fish.
Over Christmas and New Year, Gallery 33 will be exhibiting fabulous ceramic pieces from well-known female artists; Julie Collis, Amanda Shanley, Cheryl Lucas, Jane Armour, and Nadine Spalter. All works are smaller scale pieces and according to Gregg they would make the perfect Christmas present for any art lover. Call in at 33 Helwick St, Wanaka. For small teams simply check out the calendar on their website to see which session takes your fancy – it may be paint your mate Picasso style or recreating a Van Gogh night sky with a local twist, or you can paint whatever you wish. Nibbles are provided and the bar will be open.
The studio is also available for private functions which is great for end of year parties, hen's parties or any celebration. For Christmas gifts the studio has gift vouchers available, or put your creative talents to good use and join their wine glass painting session on November 24 from 7 – 9pm. Located at 136 Ilam Road, for more information visit www.paintnsip.co.nz, find them on Facebook, or call the studio on (03) 351 0879.

CUISINE RECIPES FOOD WINE BARS & CAFÉS RESTAURANTS
Flavours from the MasterChef kitchen T
he beautifully balanced recipe below was winner in the Gourmet section of the MasterChef New Zealand Kitchen on TV3. It was chosen by Head Chef, dietitian and MasterChef 2011 winner Nadia Lim who appeared on the show to guest judge each contestants' dishes.
Fennel crusted venison loin with braised red cabbage, edamame and plums Ready in: 35 minutes Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Braised red cabbage: 1/2 red onion, finely diced 1 teaspoon fennel spice mix 1/2 red cabbage, finely sliced until you have about 3 cups worth 1 plum, pitted, roughly chopped 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/2 cup red wine 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar Fennel crusted venison loin: 300g venison loin (at room temperature) 1 teaspoon fennel spice mix 1 tablespoon butter Edamame: 1 tablespoon butter Zest and juice of 1/2 a lemon 1 1/2 cups frozen podded edamame beans, defrosted Plums: 2 plums, pitted, roughly chopped Large pinch fennel spice mix Method: 1. Heat a drizzle of oil in a medium pot (with a lid) on medium heat. Cook onion and first measure of fennel spice mix for 2 minutes until softened. Add all remaining braised red cabbage ingredients to pot. Stir to combine and reduce heat to low. Simmer, covered, for 15 minutes or until plum has broken down and cabbage is wilted. Stir occasionally to avoid cabbage sticking. Season to taste with salt and pepper, set aside and keep warm. 40 November 19, 2015 Metropol
2. While cabbage cooks, pat venison dry with paper towels and cut into 2 even pieces. Rub a little olive oil into each piece and coat in second measure fennel spice mix. Heat a medium fry-pan on medium heat and cook venison for 2 minutes on each of all 4 sides for medium-rare (depending on thickness), or until cooked to your liking. Remove from pan and wrap in foil to rest for 5 minutes, then slice thinly against the grain.
3. Wipe out pan and return to medium to high heat. Add butter, lemon zest and juice. When butter has melted toss edamame beans through for 1 minute, until heated through. Season to taste with salt and pepper. In a small bowl combine chopped plums with remaining fennel spice mix. To Serve: Divide braised cabbage and edamame between plates. Top with sliced venison and spoon over plums.

Delicious seasonal café fare Verge Café is situated in Longhurst, a new subdivision near Halswell in the newly designed Longhurst Health, which houses the local medical centre and other health care related businesses.
L
onghurst Health was opened by our Prime Minister, Rt Hon John Key, at an official ceremony last week. The café opened in May this year and is the perfect place to meet for lunch or coffee, on the way to appointments or just whilst visiting friends in the area. Sole owner Molly Ye has worked in a number of Christchurch restaurants, and is a well-known face from the Beach Café at North Beach, New Brighton or the Ironside Thai in the city. This is her first café, and with her restaurant experience she has successfully created a fresh and vibrant new space. The interiors are a mix of dark rough sawn timber, pastel tiles, polished concrete floors, industrial lighting and a whole wall is devoted to Christchurch artist Popxar. The menu changes seasonally, counter food is baked on site daily and whenever possible organic produce is used.
Right Hon.John Key with Molly Ye Breakfast ranges from traditional morning favourites to waffles or tortilla wraps with a choice of fillings and grilled to perfection. Lunches range from: chicken parmigiana, teriyaki chicken salad or toasties and muffins. With a strong emphasis on health, the children's menu includes fish of the day, fresh fruit smoothies and children's fluffies. The staff welcome group bookings for clubs and groups and are happy to provide catering for local functions. Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 7am5pm; weekends 8am – 5pm. Phone (03) 261 9043.

Good old fashioned English pub Hear ye, hear ye. Where's a good old fashioned English pub you say? Well The Miller Bar and Café at 308 Lincoln Road would be a good place to start. It's a laid back old style English pub which caters to all different walks of life.
T
hey have your TAB and your pokies but every night of the week there's something great happening. It could be Texas hold-em poker or perhaps you want to stun the locals with your version of Club Tropicana on Karaoke night? Friday and Saturday night brings you the “muso” night with bands that will get you up dancing. It's been a good old fashioned family bar for 24 years now so if you're a local, you probably already know it well. It's a place where the staff will treat you the way they want to be treated. Kind of has that familiar “Cheers” feel to it, you almost expect Norm and Cliff are going to be sitting at the end of the bar. There's a great menu with good hearty meals and great specials to take advantage of, at special times. If you're wanting a pint or two with mates, it's got a great little outside area that you can enjoy too. If you want to know more, phone (03) 338 9361 and ask for Michelle. Check out their Facebook page to see what's happening. The Miller Bar and café at 308 Lincoln Road, it's everybody's local.

EXCEPTIONAL CATERING & inspiring cooking classes
With Christmas around the corner it's the perfect time to get organised for office parties or parties at home with a difference! My Home Chef offers a variety of international cuisines for cocktail parties or dinners, or you could consider a cooking class as a present.
O
Her business is three-fold with a home cooking service preparing meals for busy families or people in need; catering for functions; and running cooking classes from her purpose-built kitchen.
wner Rita Yosef, immigrated to New Zealand 12 years ago from Israel. Originally born in Latvia, she fell into catering whist cooking for a friend, and her philosophy is “to add lots of love to your food to enjoy the rewards”. Her business is three-fold with a home cooking service preparing meals for busy families or people in need; catering for functions; and running cooking classes from her purpose-built kitchen. Her food is a fusion of flavours: Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Eastern European and traditional Jewish. Finger food platters consist of delectable choices such as: Haloumi skewers, Mushroom and goat cheese tarts, beef cigars with figs, homemade humus and baklava, to name a few. Rita's cooking classes range from a variety of cooking styles and run every Thursday evening. Classes are small and intimate and everyone enjoys the food together after watching the recipes unfold. She loves to teach and learn new cooking techniques, and owes her Middle Eastern cooking knowledge to her 68-year-old mother-in-law who is still in Israel. “She exchanges recipes and passes on any family culinary secrets, I am very lucky as she doesn't share them with anyone else,” acknowledges Rita. Consider a gift voucher for you or a friend, plan a surprise dinner, or join Rita for one of her cooking classes – you will not be disappointed! here do you start with Mish Mash near the corner of St Asaph and Manchester Street? I guess a good place to start is: the name says it all. It's a Mish Mash of different quality flavours that has to be seen to be understood. If you look at the menu there has got to be something for everyone there. From French to Eastern European to Asian to Mexican, the list of countries from which the food is taken is endless. Every dish is taken by the chef and given its own special twist. It can be tangy, rich, spicy or sweet and the word that encompasses it all? Contemporary. With a welcoming atmosphere, Mish
Mash has an ambiance about it. Perhaps it's as smooth as the quality cocktails the bartender might make you, perhaps it's the funky Jazz music or perhaps it's just one of those places where the eclectic style comes together in one beautiful experience. If you drift in for a late night cocktail on a Friday or Saturday night you might encounter a DJ or two. It's not a nightclub it's just one of those cool laid back ambient sounds that make background noise enjoyable. Try a bite, have a drink, it's all worth doing at Mish Mash. Bathroom ware for gracious living By Cheryl Colley
Kohler creates bathroom ware for gracious living. Since 1883 when the company's designers put ornamental feet on a cast-iron water trough and sold it as a bathtub, Kohler has been known for its innovation and reliable functionality, coupled with bold design. Now this beautiful and extensive range is available through Edward Gibbon.
K
ohler has always been committed to craftsmanship. Kohler pieces in your bathroom will make a stylish statement from basins to baths and from toilets to tapware and bathroom cabinetry. Under-counter basins of spun glass have a distinctive architectural pattern reminiscent of fine crystal. Exotically patterned basins created from bronze take their design inspiration from 5th century China and exude a patina of age and time. Kohler baths, both freestanding and drop-in styles, are ergonomically crafted to gently support the natural curves and angles of the body and to help create a calm and luxurious bathing experience. Bathing has reached artform status with Kohler's new generation freestanding lithocast baths – a unique, premium quality solid-surface acrylic with the attractive matt finish of finely honed white stone. Edward Gibbon have a selection of Kohler products on display. One stylish range you can view is the Reve collection. With its bold geometric shapes and clean crisp lines this collection is a sculptural work of art. The stunning cast iron bath, water-saving dual flush toilet and an array of basins, deliver modern functionality, simplicity and warmth to both classic and contemporary bathrooms.
Bathing has reached artform status with Kohler's new generation freestanding lithocast baths. You can contact the Edward Gibbon team on (03) 366 7137 to discuss how the Kohler range could suit your requirements. Alternatively, visit their premises on Cranford Street and chat with their showroom consultants while browsing though Kohler's comprehensive catalogue.

WE WILL MAKE IT! Inspired by a new book showcasing the innovative design responses and engineering feats being played out across our city, architect Cymon Allfrey has discovered there is light at the end of the tunnel… Cymon Allfrey
L
ooking back on the past five years there is no doubt that Cantabrians are a resilient bunch, yet it doesn't take much to uncover the vast amount of pain and emotion that is still lingering beneath the surface. All it takes is for something during our normal day-to-day lives to trigger a memory, and in a rush of loss we are instantly reminded of a prequake life. Underneath the construction and the debates about public buildings we are still raw and still grieving. As architects, as well as Cantabrians, we have had to form and build tools – or armour – in order to allow us to develop a
thick skin and insulate ourselves from our own personal quake challenges, in order to formulate professional responses to the on-going requests for quake related design work. Yet despite this ongoing grief and amidst the sense that residentially progress is slow, I was confronted with the realisation that we are on a journey. A journey in which Rebuilt, a new book by Lucinda Diack and Juliet Nicholas offers a glimpse into. Having attended the launch of the book I was interested to learn that the working title had been 'Out of the Rubble', a title which placed an emphasis
on the major seismic events which had rattled our region and ultimately, in the past. It was discussed by the Cantabrian author and photographer that it was a working title that ignited negative connotations, and failed to draw, and capitalise on the positive nature of the book. While the nineteen houses showcased are devastating, emotional stories, which have the potential to bog us down with the catastrophic impact of the past, the title, Rebuilt, puts a full stop at the end by drawing on a glass half full attitude. Despite being only a snapshot of the

progress being made, it is a tangible symbol that we have made it. We have work to do still, but the back of it has been broken and a new future is in front of us. For me, it is the home of Angela and Ben Evans that is a physical indicator of this. Featured in the book the Evans residence was something I was working on in amongst the immediate turbulent post-quake environment. While there was talk at the time, of the quakes being lucrative for the design and construction sector, it was all about doing work to pay the bills and keep the business afloat. Yet in amongst it all I had this one project that was happening. It was a sign of positive things to come. There are many across the city and the region who are still immersed in coming out of the rubble and will be for some time yet. Living in, and dealing with a
Architecture: Cymon Allfrey Photography: Stephen Goodenough broken home is all consuming and offers no sign of a brighter future, but what this book has shown, and will continue to illustrate to us, is that there will be. We got through the first few days and weeks and this uncertain time of rebuilding our homes will pass too. We will get through this. While each of the owners in the book reflects on the challenges they overcame and the emotional, physical and financial strains they were put under, they moved forward with patience, endurance and perseverance. Qualities that as individuals we like to think we too

possess, and that we now need to draw on in order to achieve our own success stories. Stuff is happening. The wheels are turning slowly, building-by-building, family-by-family we are making progress. While for those still enduring the rebuilding process it can be hard to find the inspiration to keep going, but it is out there. Rebuilt is testament to that, as well as to the creativity and strength of our city. One day your story will be there to be told – there will be light at the end of the tunnel. www.caarc.co.nz.

wila outdoor furniture is becoming more difficult to source - perhaps more of the wood is being used for decking rather than being made into furniture. So if people love this wonderful material that is so easy to look after in an outdoor environment, our advice would be to take advantage of our spring specials.” Kenneally have all their most popular settings in stock – such as the 2000 x 970 Daintree with 6 Norfolk chairs - but also some more distinctive pieces. The 1000 x 1000 Sapphire table has an unusual geometric design, while the 2000 x 970 Clearwater setting truly makes a statement. The special prices are very attractive and all the furniture comes with a five-year guarantee. Kenneally Timber Products are located at the corner of Wrights and Old Main North roads.

intage clothing from the 1930s to the 1980s can be found happily sitting alongside revitalised art deco furniture and modern homewares. The shop is a visual symphony of colour and style with cushions of every hue, kaleidoscopic lampshades, sumptuous velvet chairs and exquisitely-designed dresses. Inherent in Jenny and Lou's philosophy is that good design will stand the test of time. Combining that love of design with unique and interesting fabrics and a focus on quality is what makes this collaboration so special. Jenny has amassed a collection of over 1000 items of some of the best examples of vintage clothing to be seen in Christchurch post-quake. The ex-lawyer and her ex-banker husband wanted to share their passion for travel and their love of culturally diverse, high quality furniture and homewares with their home city. “We work directly with talented artisans around New Zealand and the world to offer unique and distinctive products. We try to select and create pieces that celebrate the beauty of natural, sustainable materials and the perfectly imperfect nature of hand-crafted products.” With a factory in Indonesia, cowhide from Argentina, linen from Belgium and screen prints from Lyttelton, the range is eclectic to say the least. The slightly obscure location is intentional. “We've spent many years living overseas, during which time we were exposed to some very original and innovative retail concepts. We decided we didn't want to be in a mall or a more traditional retail setting. We wanted to be unexpected; the sort of place you stumble upon and go 'wow'! Builders recreating Mahoney's original home This is a love story with a difference. It's the love story of an architect for a house, and the painstaking efforts of Form Builders Ltd…
T
he architect is Maurice Mahoney of Warren & Mahoney fame, the duo widely regarded as among New Zealand's greatest architects. The house is Maurice Mahoney's own home designed by him in 1966 and which he occupied until it was demolished eighteen months ago after being badly damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes. Maurice so enjoyed living in his house that he determined to reproduce it new, almost exactly as it was when it was first built. The other party in this love story – Form Builders Ltd – is the building company whom Maurice has entrusted to re-construct his beloved design. Matt Stevenson, Director of Form Builders, describes working on the prestigious job as a real honour and privilege. “Maurice has redrawn all 64 pages of his house design by hand, the rebuild detailed to the millimetre with no room for error on our part,” says Matt. “The challenge for us has been to replicate the essential character and
style of the old '60s house using the materials and building methodologies of 2015. The only change from the original design is the addition of a sunroom off the dining area.” The Canterbury born and based Form Builders have been setting a high standard in the building industry, recognised and rewarded with a Gold Award in the Nulook New Home $650,000 - $1 million category at the Canterbury Registered Master The original Mahoney home

Builders House of the Year Awards 2015. Evidence is in the current stages of building Maurice's home, where Form Builders entrust in their relationships with long standing subcontractors, suppliers and in particular, the homeowners and clients as the key to their success. In the 1960s the house was regarded as non-conformist and original. Thanks to Form Builders, its re-creation still retains that quality. Many interior features of the original house are being replicated in the new one.

“The original living room had a rimu tongue and groove ceiling and exposed meranti beams. Meranti is an exotic hardwood that is no longer available. Maurice wanted to keep these beams” Matt, who is working on the house himself explains, “Our solution was to separate the whole living room from the rest of the house that was to be demolished, crane it to another part of the section and keep it there while ground remedial work was done and a new foundation laid. Then the whole

room was craned back onto the foundations, beams all intact. No easy task, but the end result is perfect.” Form Builders have upheld their high standard of workmanship throughout the build, which has taken almost a year so far and is expected to be completed by next February. Maurice will then be able to resume living in a house he loves, but which can definitely be said to be even better than before because of the construction expertise and innovation of Form Builders.

stablished in 1997, Whyte Construction is a fully accredited and certified member of the CBANZ, NZ Retail Interior and Master Builders Association. Clients have the option to include either a Certified Builders' or Master Builders' 10-year guarantee, which is especially reassuring for Canterbury homeowners affected by the Canterbury earthquakes whose homes require repairs or rebuilding. With considerable experience in the restoration of character homes and heritage buildings, Whyte Construction are well aware that properties such as these require knowledge, experience and understanding of the original buildings. The Kate Sheppard House is a recently completed, first rate example of this standard. Whyte Construction also understand the emotional attachment individuals can have with their homes. “Our aim is to get
our clients back into their 'home' not just into a 'house',” says David Whyte. Recent repairs of architectural homes throughout Christchurch prove that Whyte Construction can rebuild a property to new industry standards whilst retaining their pre-earthquake specifications. For the owners, it is like returning to their old property, but with added benefits. Whyte Construction Limited are located at 37 Leslie Hills Drive, Riccarton. Phone (03) 348 0173.
