I don’t know if I fully appreciated the beauty of Christmas until I had kids. There’s something pretty special about seeing their faces light up with delight, and not just when it comes to opening up presents! Whether it’s the direct association of knowing how it feels to receive gifts themselves, or the visible acknowledgment of how happy they have made someone else, children derive so much joy from the act of giving. With a love of baking, my eldest – now 12 – and I have made baked goodie baskets for friends and family for the last few years. What started as an economical way to provide gifts for a greater number of loved ones has now became firmly entrenched as a family tradition. Christmas tree-shaped shortbread, gingerbread angels, melting snowman cookies and chocolate truffles are all popular additions, but it’s important

to note, they can’t be baked without a generous helping of festive music. My middle child is now two, so he is finally starting to appreciate what it means when mummy starts baking and, although his vocabulary is limited, he’s able to make it pretty clear the beaters are his to lick at the end! This year a homemade gingerbread house will be the pièce de résistance of our festive spread. If it’s a flop, at least we can feast on the remnants and, if it’s a success, then it may well become a new annual ritual. Here’s to new traditions and old. From all the team here at Metropol, have a wonderful Christmas; we look forward to seeing you on the other side.

CALLING ALL ART FICIONADOS By Céline Gibson

For Christchurch art aficionados, galleries offer an exciting opportunity to get up close and personal with the movers and shakers of both the national and international arts scene.

D

ecember 16, 2017 through to February 18, 2018, is an ideal opportunity to do just that at CoCA Gallery, with exhibits by nationally and internationally acclaimed artists Hannah Beehre and Ruth Watson. Presented in collaboration with Jonathan Smart Gallery, ‘Mures, Et Terram’ is Beehre’s large, seven panelled, ink on canvas work, which came about as a direct response to the earthquakes and depicts finely sketched mice, frogs and lizards, scrabbling about in chaotic confusion. “These small creatures are human surrogates created to evoke insecurities such as our inability to control life circumstances,” explains the Christchurch born and based artist.

8 December 14, 2017 Metropol

“It contains for me a very human story of fear, loss and recovery.” ‘Geophagy’ is Canterbury born (now Auckland based) Ruth Watson’s first major Christchurch exhibition. “It’s a conceptual metaphor on consumption,” Khye explains. “How the process of it shapes our environment.” First exhibited at the Gus Fisher Gallery in Auckland, ‘Geophagy’ has been reworked and up-scaled for CoCA. The work is a sprawling sculptural installation of clothing, video works and photography. It is described as an exploration of overpopulation and environmental issues in the dystopian present. Both exhibitions run from December 16 to February 18. For information, visit www.coca.org.nz.

Christmas is certainly one of the most wonderful times of the year. But it also highlights the significant need that exists in our communities, reinforcing the importance of philanthropy and generosity of spirit.

T

he George hotel – a hospitality icon in Christchurch – has both of these qualities in equal and inspiring measure. The multi-award winning luxury hotel - New Zealand’s leading boutique hotel, in the World Travel Awards 2012-2017 – leads by example on the most important human values. Its role in supporting and contributing to families in need – especially at special times of the year when all families deserve to feel blessed – was beautifully demonstrated by its recent donation to the very deserving Salvation Army. On Friday 24 November, The George hotel showed it is so much more than an iconic Christchurch venue. At the request of one of The George’s most valued and regular guests, Mr Richie Smith, 100 beautiful George Bears were gifted, each with their own little poem. The bears will be given to South Island children who need a furry companion for Christmas to tell their secrets to. With special guests and staff in attendance, this feel-good initiative serves as a timely reminder that we all have a role to play in supporting those in need.

TALENTED THESPIAN It may not be every little girl’s dream to become a Spanish prostitute, but for 21-year-old actress Mikaela Rüegg, her role as Flamenco in the movie Stolen not only marked her professional debut as an actor, but also the culmination of a lifelong passion for film and performing arts.

A

fter losing their home in Hurricane Katrina in 2006, Mikaela’s family made Christchurch their new home, only to be hit again by the 2010-2011 earthquakes. But they remained here until the bright lights

12 December 14, 2017 Metropol

of a professional acting career in Auckland beckoned for Mikaela earlier this year. We talk to the talented thespian about a professional journey which is as exciting as it is exceptional.

N

one on one This role marks your professional debut as an actor and has since led to a string of other roles, what was your background in acting prior to this? I had a passion for acting from a young age; when I saw Sutton Foster perform in Thoroughly Modern Millie I got the bug. However, dancing/singing is an expensive hobby and it wasn’t until I was a teenager and could start waitressing that I really started ‘training’ my voice, and going to dance lessons. From then on I performed in musicals all throughout university and studied at the Christchurch International Musical Theatre Summer School with none other than Sutton Foster herself! As for film, I was never really in front of the camera. I did editing work and directed some short films from about 14 years old. I often think the lack of any formal training (I studied history and political science at uni, not acting) has allowed me to be uninhibited in my acting. What attracted you to acting? Acting is intuitive, intellectual, and highly stimulating. I love the challenge of putting myself in someone else’s shoes, learning to be more empathetic by becoming someone who is so different to who you are. It’s also a collaborative art, which means you get to meet incredible people all the time! How did you first become involved in the movie Stolen? A friend of mine named Whare Mihinui was cast as a bandit in the film and he heard that one of the supporting actresses was no longer able to fly to New Zealand and they were looking to recast (possibly in New Zealand). So I jumped at the opportunity, brushed up my Spanish/Spanish accent and asked for an audition. I was thrilled when I found out that Director Niall Johnson and Producer Emily Corcoran had taken a chance on a total newbie and cast me! How much has life changed for you since then? Completely. I got an amazing agent, moved to Auckland, worked on some US TV up here, and spent three months in LA this year getting US representation and doing acting workshops. Basically taking the full 100 percent dive into professional acting! I love the challenge and getting up every day knowing I’m pursuing something that I’m ridiculously passionate about is very fulfilling, even during the lulls. This opportunity has been career – and life – changing, what are some of your goals beyond this? I want to work globally as a Kiwi actress – next step for me will be LA. It’s such an exciting time for women in film and I’m looking forward to pursuing, playing, writing, and creating roles that represent women truthfully on the big screen.

CANTERBURY’S

NEGLECTED PIONEERS Christchurch’s history is filled with stories of the hard work and perseverance of our founding families, with the names of these pioneering people remaining prominent throughout the years. However, little has been published about one of the early families on our western doorstep and this knowledge led local woman Jenny Abrahamson on a 13-year labour of love.

16 December 14, 2017 Metropol

A

n hour’s drive from Christchurch, amongst the eastern ranges of the Southern Alps, Castle Hill – or Kura Tawhiti – has an intense beauty, characterised by uniquely formed boulders and rocky outcrops. Long before European settlement, Maori recognised a special kind of magic in the mountainous Mecca. In the late 19th century, the region became home to two Cornish brothers who owned the Castle Hill sheep station for more than 25 years. Although virtually unknown to New Zealanders, John and Charles Enys wrote and painted about their adventures. John served on many committees, including the Selwyn County Council and the Canterbury Provincial Council, and was involved in the founding of both the Canterbury Museum and the public library, while Charles sketched and painted the views around their home and neighbouring homesteads, such as Craigieburn, Grasmere, Cora Lynn and Mt White. The remaining settlement has retained the name Enys and that’s where Jenny’s interest in the land was born. With a family bach on the site of the original Castle Hill buildings, she had spent many holidays on the land throughout her life. When she discovered Charles’ paintings were housed in the National Library in Canberra, Australia, she became invested in getting them recognition on her home soil. Along the way she came across the award-winning photographic genius of another local – John O’Malley and together they have worked tirelessly to put together the book John and Charles Enys Castle Hill Runholders 1864-1891. “When I realised all the paintings by Charles were in Australia, I came up with the idea to get them published with the matching photographs of how the landscapes are now,” Jenny says. Many, many hours of work have gone into the production of the book, which not only includes the story of this local family, but features Charles’ original paintings alongside John O’Malley’s matching photographs. Jenny even managed to track down a great, great niece in England, who was able to help with a lot of the family details, including providing unpublished letters and photos from Great Britain, even travelling to New Zealand to visit the family’s landholding. “Nobody had really written about them at all,” Jenny says. “They had no children of their own, so little family to keep their memory alive. John was quite an important figure in early colonial Canterbury, but had nobody to carry the name forward. The book has come out better than I had hoped and I’m pleased to have been able to write about his importance.”

hat’s the view of the team at the law firm Cameron & Co which has recently moved into new highly visible premises at 322 Riccarton Road, near the Bush Inn shopping centre. “Our new place gives us the perfect opportunity to bring most of our team back under one roof from our current four small office locations,” Office Manager Julie Beijen says. “We haven’t had that since the earthquakes forced us out of Landsborough House in the CBD. Once we are all together we can think strategically about the future of Cameron & Co and the best way we can serve our clients.” One thing for certain about the firm’s

future is that it is not intending to move again. “We’re fitting out the offices to suit our purposes and our clients are telling us on an almost daily basis how much easier it is for them to come to us here. Part of that ease of access is the parking available. “A large number of our clients live in the immediate catchment area. We also love that many of the businesses that surround us are our clients. We are now very much part of the community.” It’s that personal affinity which is a hallmark of Cameron & Co. “Part of our service is getting to know who our clients are, their family history and background so we have a context to the relationship. We

can then tailor our service and advice to their specific needs.” Cameron & Co offers expert advice on the full range of legal services. “We are fortunate to have very experienced lawyers in the firm who have specialised in particular aspects of the law. We liken ourselves somewhat to a general medical practice, with a number of specialists working within.” Cameron & Co intends to host a couple of open days early in 2018 for clients to come and have a look at the new offices. “Our refit will be complete by then and it will be really exciting to open the doors and show clients the space.”

ccording to Trevor Best, mastermind behind the Lyttelton Library of Tools and Things (LLOTT), which opens at the Lyttelton Recreation Centre in February next year, work is fundamental to men’s physical and mental health, but it needs to achieve three things. “It has to give a sense of mastery/competence, a sense of autonomy and a sense of being involved in something bigger than yourself.” Research shows that tool libraries are nailing these essentials on an epic, global scale. Trevor visited New Zealand’s first tool library in Newton and came away impressed. “I saw their repair cafés and workshops were really important ways for people to work together on projects, get

This imaginative, creative team established community initiatives such as the Lyttelton Harbour Time Bank, the Festival of Lights, Lyttelton Farmers Market, Waste Matters and Lyttelton Summerfest, to name just a few. “Isolation is a root cause of suicide,” says Project Lyttelton CoManager Lucette Hindin, “but when people come together to share knowledge and skills, the positive effect on mental health, waste reduction and planet sustainability for future generations is enormous.” For more information visit www.lyttelton.net.nz.

BLING FLING

1.

By Melinda Collins

It’s not hard to be seduced by the latest and greatest when it comes to bling. And, although any excuse to update our jewellery boxes is good enough for us, the season of gifting (both for others, as well as ourselves), really is the ultimate time for a fling – or something deeper – with some new bling.

D

esigners have had us feeling starry eyed with this season’s celestial trend catching eyes as much on the catwalk as on the street, with star earrings, crescent moons and other whimsical symbols adorning both prints and jewellery. We’ll be the first to admit, we’ve got a bit of a cosmic crush on some of the clever creations designers such as Chanel, Emilio Pucci and our very own Karen Walker have been bringing to the sartorial party. Check out our mood board of statement stars and subtle sparkle that will send you over the moon.

DYNAMIC DENIM By Kate Pierson

It is the fabric of successful brands the world over – Levis, Wrangler, True Religion and G Star Raw, among a seemingly endless list of style icons. Yes, denim – de rigeur in wardrobes no matter the age or fashion philosophies adopted – has a ‘never say die’ attitude that sees it endure generation after generation. Having found its fashionable feet in 1873 when the iconic ‘jean’ pant was invented by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss, its fame and fortune owe to its flexibility. The fabric’s impressive trajectory has seen it come a long way since its infancy; from bellbottoms to bags, its

application knows no bounds. Looking ahead to 2018, it’s clear designers still have a major soft spot for denim and, the good news is, the modern interpretations continue to buck the status quo. We’ve got the lowdown on what will be reigning supreme as a new year dawns.

The gentle side of denim: we all love a big softie at heart and designers are tapping into this, introducing impossibly soft denim linens that have a chameleon like nature. They’ll willingly shapeshift into different styles, from draping to ruffles, and they take front and centre stage in minimalist, modern themed clothing designs.

3.

Feeling ripped off: in the best way possible! Deconstructed denim has been winning hearts for a few seasons now and it’s sticking around in 2018. A step towards sustainability thanks to its creative spin on upcycling, distressed fabric, patches and rips are the most common hallmarks of this aesthetic.

1.

2.

Speakeasy style: this is where you can really show your personality. Speakeasy denim channels a very eclectic streak, featuring quirky embellishments like graffiti, embroidery, patchwork and badges. Rules are made to be broken with this concept. Denim: wear it your way and invest with confidence knowing it is a timeless addition to your sartorial portfolio.

All hail summer holidays! It is that most wonderful time of the year when the social calendar is absolutely bursting at the seams and this provides just cause for a wardrobe revamp. Well, at least that’s our reasoning and we’re sure you’d agree.

Dive in: you might still be working hard to shift those stubborn love-handles that mysteriously appeared after a winter spent in hibernation with delicious carbohydrates for company, but never fear, swimwear has never been more forgiving. It literally comes in all shapes and sizes. This summer block colouring, mixing and matching, and one pieces are having their time in the sun so dive into these styles. Best foot forward: you can never go wrong with a great sandal - one that will see you through from day to night wear. ‘The’ sandal of summer is all about millennial pink. Bottoms up: staying hydrated in summer is common sense but it can also be a style statement. Opt for a BPA free bottle and one that is sturdy so it can go here, there and everywhere with you. Back off: from the beach to the bar, you need a bag that will play host to all your summer accessories. Florals are the fixation this summer.

Spec-tacular style: your beach bag should always have a pair of shades that can transition between outfits. New Zealand has a notoriously harsh sun and UV levels. If this isn’t incentive enough, eye candy is the perfect accent for a polished look.

Pucker up: style is a top to toe kind of affair. With soaring temperatures on the horizon (we hope), the kindest thing you can do for your lips is bless them with some hydration. Ditch the bland remedies though and opt for the best of both worlds - something pretty and pragmatic all wrapped into one. Quite some time ago we joined the Mor Makeup fanclub and we’ve never looked back. This marshmallow flavoured beauty has looks, personality and a practical side to boot. What’s not to love?

REASON SMILE GIVING PEOPLE A

TO

For 30 years, Ronald Sluiter – founder of Orthodontix – has been giving thousands of people a reason to smile. His passion and skill are palpable. He talks to Metropol about the ins and outs of a career admired by many.

How did your venture into orthodontics begin? During the fifth year of dentistry there was an orthodontics workshop every student had to do and I said ‘this is me’. In dentistry you see the same patients year after year, whereas with orthodontics you do everything from start to finish and then move onto your next project – that’s why I like it so much and I have for 30 years. Your family is an integral and valued part of your business, can you talk about your position on work and family life? They’re almost the same. My wife and I started the practice in the Netherlands and she worked with me for more than 25 years and my daughters work with me – one as a practice manager and the other is like a PA. The practice has always been a part of our family life. Philanthropy is something you are particularly passionate about, where do your interests and priorities lie in this area? I’m a strong supporter of the Wish For A Smile Trust – that originated in our practice and I’m a strong believer in karma. Treat others how you

32 December 14, 2017 Metropol

want to be treated. Sometimes you just need to do things because it’s the decent thing to do. I believe you don’t try to get as much money out of people as you can. We set our fees accordingly. We’re here to help people. Money is always a means, not a goal. What is on the horizon for your future endeavours? When I was younger, only the happy few had braces and then, because of new bonding techniques, everybody got braces and only the happy few had the white braces. Now we do white braces as standard and only the happy few have Invisalign. I think Invisalign is going to be the standard of care. On the horizon is far more integration of IT technology into our treatments – like dental monitoring via app which is taking off around the world. This is a system where you take a couple of selfies along the line and these are sent off to Paris to be analysed and then you’re told you can progress. The app tells you when you need to make a new appointment. On one hand, we see the patient less, but still we are monitoring even more. There is a lot that is going to change.

T

New management has brought new life to Holmwood & Rossall Hairdressing salon, a wellestablished business in the Elmwood village. The strong creative team creates inspirational looks for both men and women, taking into account personality and style.

he standard of work is the salon’s strength. The highly-experienced stylists have spent a lot of time working in Australia, where finishing standards are excellent. “While we always invite people to bring in pictures of the look they want to achieve, we will always be open and honest in guiding clients towards something that will work for them,” says stylist Dean Borland, who has 15 years in the industry. The salon vibe is a relaxed, light-filled

space. “Natural light is so important when it comes to creating multidimensional colour for clients and also helpful when it comes to corrective services,” hairstylist Jay says. Jay has been in the industry for 12 years, including four in Melbourne. “I love creating cuts and colours that reflect my clients’ lifestyles, face shapes and skin tones. My passion is colour correction and the challenge that brings. I also specialise in balayage and curly textured hair.” Creative and talented hairstylist Jess has

worked backstage at ‘WOW,’ which she says was an incredible experience. “I love colour work and specialise in both men and women’s styling.” Jamie is an expert stylist with 14 years’ experience. Formerly a hairdressing educator, she has owned a salon in Dunedin and loves creating high-end fashion looks. Passion, creativity and finishing excellence means clients leave very happy. A SWEET SPOT FOR By Melinda Collins

HEALTH

Many of us are aware of the impact blood sugar levels have on diabetics – whether type 1, type 2, gestational, or some of the other less prominent types, of which there are several. For these people, highs and lows can have drastic and immediate consequences.

Metropol December 14, 2017 39

health

B

ut as a non-diabetic, you don’t need to worry about highs and lows, right? After all, your body regulates its own insulin production, counteracting highs and lows by virtue of its own automatic processes. Well, not quite, according to nutrition and fitness expert and bestselling author, Mark MacDonald, who has a special interest in blood sugar levels. The author of two New York Times’ bestselling books on the subject and the driving force behind Jeunesse’s newest weight management product, the cutting-edge Zen Project 8 Program, his food philosophy centres on the rule of thirds – or PFC (protein, fat and carbs every three hours), more information at zenproject8.com. Although many people believe they are eating ‘healthily’, they are failing to eat ‘correctly’ and inadvertently their blood sugar levels are spiking and crashing all day. “Everyone, diabetic or not, needs to stabilise their blood sugar to fuel the body with the necessary energy to survive,” he says. “When someone is ‘starving’, they have low blood sugar levels; if you’re starving, you waited too long to eat. Every time someone is ‘stuffed’ they have high blood sugar. The only difference is that diabetics may need the assistance of medication combined with solid nutrition to keep their blood sugar in balance. “Bodies always need to be fed and blood sugar levels are your lifeline; from the moment you wake to the moment you go to sleep you need to be eating an equal portion of protein, fat and carbs every three hours to keep your blood sugar in the proper range.” Mark is passionate about educating people on the right foods to balance the metabolism, so our bodies are burning fuel and not muscle. “We talk about sugar taxes and tell people they can’t do this or they can’t do that. But it all comes back to education,” he says. “The reality is, blood sugar levels are a balancing act. When a baby is born it’s feeding every three hours; it eats when it’s hungry and stops when it’s satisfied. We need to start a programme where we listen to what our bodies are telling us – eating to satisfaction then, three hours later, eating another meal.”

RUNNING-MORE THAN JUST RUNNING By Allison O’Neill

Running, it’s the ultimate ‘don’t knock it till you try it’ sport. The number of self-professed ‘nonrunners’ that catch the run-bug after just one fun run event is high. Many decide ‘I’m going to run faster next year’ before the finish line is even in sight, while some dislike running but are addicted to what events give them. On the start line you are all one.

R

eligion, race, sexuality and pace – none of it matters. Together you will enter a ‘tunnel’ of kilometres and the finish chute is the only way out. It is the best-worst tunnel you’ll ever encounter. You have not lived until you have felt what it is to stand at the start line in a crowd, full of nerves, excitement and fear, a number pinned to your front, a medal received and your results published online for all to see. Running is more than fitness, the personal challenge and growth found in steady improvement is fulfilling. Joining a running group terrifies most, yet those that do say they wish they did it years earlier. Regardless of differing age, ability or lifestyles, you bond deeply with those you puff with. Strength and fitness have many faces and come in all shapes and sizes. It is a thrill to be left for dust by someone who does not fit the traditional ‘look’ of someone super fit – with running you can assume nothing. My most recent half marathon was in Queenstown; my family road tripped there, stopping at playgrounds, stone skimming and paddling at Lake Tekapo, and enjoying the spiritual experience that is lining up at Fairlie Bakehouse for a cronut. In Queenstown we ‘Ferg Burger-ed’ and dined at the raw food cafés I’ve long stalked on Instagram. The kids

40 December 14, 2017 Metropol

were blown away by the ‘create your own ice cream sticks’ at Patagonia Chocolates, mezmerised as their flavour choice was drowned under their preferred chocolate fountain and topped in a glory of biscuit crumb. An easy $25 drop at The Remarkables Sweet Shop was worth every penny and the vista from the top of the Gondola is as beautiful as the luge is fun. Most marathons include kids’ races. The tick chart they receive for training helps them prepare (there is not a kid in the world that does not love a tick chart). They feel like celebrities hearing spectators screaming their name, they cross the finish line proud of their efforts, receive a medal and ask, while still puffing, “When is my next race?” After my half marathon, I went for a dip in the lake. The cold lake soothed my beat-up body – my run effort had been without bounty: I had added to, not subtracted from, my previous years’ time. The cold soothed my every cell that grieved a year of discipline, training and nutrition. Running events are a fun family affair which double as a holiday: best drowned in chocolate and eaten with toes dipped in the lake. Running is so much more than just running.

GIFT GUIDE

It’s time to put on your Santa hat and start checking items off your nice (and naughty) lists. In the spirit of gift-giving season, we’ve put together a selection of top toys, from those that sync, through to retro classics and everything in between. We’ll clue you in on some of the hottest items of the season, but we’ve also chosen toys that bypass the lists of the ‘latest and greatest’ because we happen to think pogo sticks and pole tennis are still cool too.

Imagination creation: Let little ones’ imaginations run wild as they explore their creative side with puzzles, roleplaying and dress ups all popular gift ideas. Leapfrog has a new Scoop and Learn Ice Cream Cart, or check out the Imaginarium 100+ piece Mountain Rock Train Table.

Tech teaching: For the littlies, Fisher-Price has a Think & Learn Teach ‘n Tag Movi; a robot which plays preschool learning games. For the big kids (and the kids at heart) there’s a Star Wars Droid Inventor Kit, which comes with everything you need to create and control your own droid.

Let’s get physical: There’s no shortage of options to get the kids off the computers. Classics like scooters and pogo sticks are always safe options, there is even a Laser X two player laser tag gaming set, or get them taking out the rubbish for you on a Hoverboard.

Hero worship: The classic Lego now has a Wonder Woman set, or if their biggest hero is dad, Little Tikes has a Backyard Barbecue set complete with grilled goodies!

Artistic endeavours: Unleash their inner artists with an easel, playdough, paint sets, or for a retro class, the original Spirograph is still available! Big softie: Nothing really beats a soft toy… except a soft toy that encourages their nurturing side. Hatchimals are back this year, this time with twins! The company’s latest invention, LuvaBella, is an interactive doll that laughs when tickled and learns words when you feed and play with her.

cuisine HIT THE

SWEET SPOT There’s nothing quite as handy as having a simple sweet snack in your culinary repertoire during the summer holidays, especially if you’re entertaining littlies. For those that aren’t, this marshmallow slice will hit the sweet spot of the most hardened adult in the room.

Base ingredients:

125 grams butter 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla essence 1 egg 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking powder

Filling ingredients: 2 dessertspoons gelatine 1 cup cold water 1 cup white sugar 1 egg white 1 cup icing sugar

Base:

Preheat oven to 180˚C. Cream butter, white sugar and vanilla essence. Add egg and mix until well combined, before adding sifted dry ingredients. Press into a greased tin and bake for 20-30 minutes.

Filling: Soften gelatine in cold water. Add white sugar and boil for eight minutes, before removing from heat and allowing to cool. Beat egg white until stiff, fold in icing sugar and slowly add cooled gelatine. Beat for 3-5 minutes, until thick and white. Add raspberry essence and red food colouring if you wish to add some Christmas colour, and beat until combined. Spread on shortcake immediately and sprinkle with either coconut, hundreds and thousands, or shaved chocolate.

ith el fresco lunch as a popular option, it seats 50 outside and about 70 inside and, with opening hours from 9am Monday to Friday and 10am on weekends, it’s the ideal location for modern dining. The leather booth seating is very comfortable and the bar area convivial for a ‘before function’ beverage, or perhaps an ‘after work’ tipple. It was alive with office workers from the area when I first visited. My meal for the Christmas function arrived; I’d ordered the beef cheek cooked in crayfish stock, bone marrow and pappardelle, but it was everyone else’s options that sealed the deal on me returning to write this review. I had a serious case of food envy and there was good reason. I returned for lunch the next week with a friend, so I could sample the other dishes, which were stunning. The standout was the gnocchi, chicken confit, burnt onion puree, fried egg and parmesan. What a dish from the gods. Full of flavour, the broth with foam is a taste sensation – truly stunning. I then sampled my guest’s warm salad of four spice duck

confit, artichokes, mushrooms, crackling with liver, date, and tamarind vinaigrette. Oh the sweet flavours mixing with crisp piquant highlights. There is a menu for lunch and one for dinner – both equally loaded with incredible dishes worth trying. We then moved to the desserts menu to end with a sweet touch. I say touch, but what arrived was another feast of flavour – chocolate marquee hazelnut with hokey pokey vanilla icecream. Then what could only be described as their signature dessert – apple tarte tatin with salted caramel oooozzzzing over a delicious pastry, with the apple poached to perfection. It was like you were at the finest patisserie in Paris. In short, to say Universo is great is an understatement. You have to experience it for yourself. I loved the ambience, I loved the service and I loved the food. Tony Astle has got this one completely right and it’s a strong addition to a portfolio already bursting with dining sensations. I see it as one of those destinations that cement itself as a ‘go-to’. Enjoy.

he well-built standalone 1911 villa was dull and neglected, so its landlord happily let designer Hedwig Dunbar-Keek recreate with amazing Dutch designed wallpapers, the Arabian Nights room has a dash of disco glam, and the Colour Room imparts a sunlit feast of florals and patterns. The functional, ample kitchen is brand-new and the bathroom’s optical-illusion wallpaper alone is worth a visit! A meticulous makeover by Inpromptu Ltd, her husband Gregory Dunbar’s painting company, returned the villa to its enchanted former glory. Now with the original soft-pink exterior and renewed light and ambiance, the much-admired landmark is testament to his work. No wonder, as the couple had owned an interior design business in Amsterdam. “Villa 23 is the first Dutch vegetarian café in New Zealand,”

says Hedwig, its cook and creator. She also sells designer healthy smoothies at Deans Bush on Saturdays, achieving highly commended in last year’s National Farmers’ Market Awards. Her little Dutch poffertjes pancakes, oliebollen, and home-cooked dishes, are incredible. The café’s interior exudes warmth and space. “With a great central location, it could be anything from a café to a cigar bar – it’s perfect for a boutique business, especially functions. At last year’s Christmas party, everyone was dancing on the original polished-wooden floors”. “It’s amazing how you can just dream something and it happens.” She’s hoping the next owners will realise their dreams too - and take Villa 23 to the next level. I

Your work has been featured all over the world including in Vogue! Could you ever have anticipated how much your idea would resonate and inspire? I am deeply grateful for all the love and support I’ve received through this journey. I never thought it would receive as much attention and coverage as it does now. I started this as a mindfulness practice and a platform to express myself, challenge my creativity and create something unique with food. One of my favourite parts of the process is being able to share the love I’ve put into making these and to share the things that bring me joy with others in hopes of it cheering up their days too. If it makes even one person smile, I’ll feel so happy. Through this project, I’ve learnt a lot about balance and letting go. It also reminds me that life is temporary and that every moment and every beauty should be savoured.

You have an incredible gift - what inspired your concept? Thank you for your kind words. It all started with a soup. I was initially trying to garnish my soup with swirls of coconut cream which eventually didn’t turn out as how I planned it. Then I saw the opportunity to turn the swirls and pesto into a tree instead. Since then, I’ve experimented with colourful natural ingredients to create ‘paintings’ and try ‘animating’ it in some of my videos too.

Hazel Zakariya is one cool cat, and if life was a popularity contest, she’d definitely be a frontrunner. Why? Because her culinary creativity is winning affections the world over. The creator of vegan smoothie bowls featuring some pretty cute little critters and designs, Hazel talks to Metropol about how this stroke of genius has shifted gear from hobby to heartwarming, headline-grabbing success story.

How do you come up with new ideas and when do you have time to play with the possibilities around a full time job? I’m often inspired by nature, movies and what I see around me. Being self-taught, I’m constantly looking to challenge myself to improve the quality of my work. Some ideas are thought of weeks in advance and some are done on the fly. As the creation process itself is quite long, I usually execute and use that time to practice as well. Thus, any new style or concept you see would be my first time drawing it. What lies ahead? How would you like to move your project forward? I am excited for the future and looking to pursue more collaborations and would love to create a book one day.

FESTIVE SEASON ST YLING

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas as we pay homage to the time-honoured tradition of decorating our spaces with all things festive. Lucy Feagins, from The Design Files, who recently partnered with Swedish designed brand kikki.K, gives us her top tips on bringing Christmas to life. What are your top tips for making your home space beautiful and personal this Christmas? I really love the atmosphere and smell of a real Christmas tree. When we bring a tree home this signals the start of the holiday season for me! I’m also a sucker for fairy lights – I like tiny natural white bud lights. Even though I’m a grown adult (!), it still feels so magical turning these on and seeing them twinkle through the tree branches after everyone is in bed. For Christmas lunch, I often decorate with foraged foliage – just some simple strands of ivy strewn on surface tops or down the centre of the table is so easy and adds such a lovely, festive touch. You feature so many amazing spaces on The Design Files, what’s your personal style like and how will you be interpreting this in your own home for Christmas? When it comes to our website, I’m always seeking out really bold, distinctive interiors, but in my own home I tend to be 58 December 14, 2017 Metropol

a little more restrained and minimal. For Christmas, my main styling comes in the form of fresh flowers and foliage, a handmade Christmas wreath and I also really love wrapping presents in creative ways. What are your top tips for entertaining at home over Christmas and how will you be making your guests feel extra special when they visit? I enjoy entertaining, but it can be a bit stressful if you’re not prepared. I really like to be super organised so I know I can enjoy myself and not stress about food on the stove! I must say, the grocery stockpiling commences in mid-Dec for me (as I tend to work right up until Christmas) – it’s always helpful to have a fridge stocked full of treats, so you can be spontaneous and host friends whenever they drop by. That said, my go-to Christmas dish is the classic pavlova. I make mine the night before, then drench it in cream and fresh berries just before serving – always a crowd pleaser!

CREATING YOUR

DREAM HOME

You’ve made the decision to build a new home rather than buy. How do you feel – excited, nervous, apprehensive? With significant expenditure ahead, how can you minimise the potential issues to achieve your vision of a dream home, keep within your set budget and make it stress-free?

the style file

homestaging

he best solution, according to Sam at Fleetwood Construction, is to bring in your preferred builder early. “Get your builder on site to look at the section you want to buy. If I am advising my clients I can give them my opinion on the spot about any complexities there might be of building on that site. It might be a challenging hill site or access might be difficult. Things like this impact on the cost of a build.” Sam says once clients share with him the type and size of home they have in mind to build he can give them an estimated square metre rate, which allows them to work out if the section and the build will fit their budget. “Once clients have chosen their site and start working with their architect, I am happy to attend progress meetings and offer any practical advice. Once they have their draft plans, I can work out the build costs. If the cost is too high at this early stage it is easier to alter the plans then, before any more time or money is invested. When we work with clients from the early stages of their build process, we always end up with satisfied clients and beautiful homes.”

When presented with a long narrow site and minimal street frontage, the team at O’Neil Architecture was committed to ensuring these challenges did not limit the end result. Winning the TIDA NZ National 2017 Designer New Home, it is clear they succeeded. The judges were impressed with the modern family home that is beautifully proportioned and oriented on its site.

Interior Architecture by co-TIDA winner Eterno Design.

C

lever design features and lifted ceilings help to generate volume and allow the multiple living areas to bathe in natural light, ultimately enhancing the illusion of space and detracting from the narrow site. The clients wanted a functional practical home, which was spacious and private. O’Neil Architecture made certain that the design encompassed the needs of a growing family with an abundance of

hidden storage solutions, and spaces that can easily transform and adapt, depending on the current requirements of the family. The overall palette is earthy yet inviting, while the aesthetic direction is simple and edgy. The raw coarse element of the concrete contrasts perfectly with the narrow timber cladding, creating the finest of vertical textures. Despite the open plan nature, the familysized living and dining area has a sense

of cosiness and warmth, with the feature fireplace and varying ceiling heights helping to define the spaces within it. The kitchen, with its striking black cabinetry, boasts an enviable position overlooking the covered outdoor living area which seamlessly opens up to create a superb entertaining space. The proportions are all effortlessly balanced which, given the initial challenge of the long narrow site, proves the value of good design. Metropol December 14, 2017 61

INDOORS OUT TAKING THE

By Kineta Booker

Summer is the perfect time to sit back and enjoy all the work you’ve put into your garden over spring, especially while you have the time over the holiday season. 62 December 14, 2017 Metropol

nternationally, the trend is to take the indoors out and, known as a country that spends a lot of time in the outdoors, we’re already ahead of the rest of the world – so let’s join them in our own backyards. Taking comfort in your own outdoor living space, in the tranquility and privacy of your own home, is perfect for those who don’t feel they need to rush, or perhaps even better for those who are always on the go. It’s all about creating the perfect area outside, either through permanent landscaping or moveable furniture. Many backyards are shared with equipment for little ones, so making a private spot will work better for everyone in the long run. Once you’ve found your space, make it your own with a swing seat, blankets and cushions, or comfortable garden furniture, set around a table you can entertain at. Yes, there’s a world to explore and people to meet, but why not take a moment to enjoy your own space? Stop rushing to the next thing and take time out in your own backyard.

e feel like we nailed it. undertaken and a Early in the year we completed and opened the doors to our awardwinning show home in Forfar Street, St Albans. This architecturally designed home sits comfortably yet strikingly alongside the established homes and businesses; a testament to the design and to the attention to detail by our team. Not content to leave the show home just to weekend walk-throughs by the public (which we have loved by the way!) we’ve continued to find interesting ways to utilise the space for the community and beyond. We have a strong community focus at Casa Construction, aligned to the values our Charitable Trust. We’ve utilised the show home as a

venue for the Ronald McDonald South Island Supper Club, hosted a fundraising evening for the new social enterprise, 27Seconds and provided access for artists and new businesses wanting a private space to host their clients. Alongside the show home activities, we’ve continued to build and deliver stunning homes all around

Christchurch. Were even starting to dip our toes into Central Otago, with several clients seeking our expertise and attention to detail for their prospective build. We’d like to thank everyone who has made this year, 2017, such a great one for Casa, for our clients and for our people. Here’s to next year! And here’s to holidays. Enjoy.

OUT & ABOUT, ON FOOT As we reflect on the year that has been, and look forward to the one coming, Architect Cymon Allfrey challenges us to set out on foot and truly experience what our inner city has to offer.

A

s we flash through central Christchurch on our way from one point to another, we are able to marvel at the large-scale building work that is forming the frame of the city. Yet it is not until we are able to truly experience the environment around us, that we are able to really see how our city is taking shape. Which is why, at this time of the year, I encourage you to make the most of a summer break, put on your walking shoes and explore the inner city at a deeper level. Last year I offered the Scape Public Art Map as a directional guide; this year there is no defined track, rather it is about being inspired by the space in between. During the last few months, we have seen the central city really start to take shape. With two daughters, it was not

surprising that I found myself at H&M days after it opened and I was amazed at the flow of people. Moving from Ballanytnes and the Re:Start Mall to The Crossing, and to Little High Eatery and the surrounding establishments, for the first time in a long time, the central city felt like a real city. There is no denying there is still work to do, but the emerging pockets of development are starting to interact and connect with one another to create a sense of movement. Stimulated by the corporate development that has happened in this corner of the city, these pockets of retail and dining are the first step in filling the gaps. What excites me however, is the finer grain yet to come: the boutique retailers, the entrepreneurs and the one-off establishments.

Looking forward to this time next year, it is hard to imagine what will fill the gaps; the only thing we know for sure, is that it will be the unexpected. Discovering the unexpected however, can only be done by foot. I would suggest starting at the Bridge of Remembrance and walking through Cashel and High Street to ARA (the former Polytechnic). Yet this is not the only corner of the city that is worth a look. Recent announcements around a target date of 2019 for the reopening of the Town Hall is set to activate the North-West corner of the city. This will be further aided by the recent relocation of the Justice Precinct to a new site; paving the way forward for Science Alive to repurpose the old court buildings.

IT IS NOT UNTIL WE ARE ABLE TO TRULY EXPERIENCE THE ENVIRONMENT AROUND US, THAT WE ARE ABLE TO REALLY SEE HOW OUR CITY IS TAKING SHAPE. Working to further achieve a sense of movement of people in this area will be the Convention Centre and, while it is a few years until we will see this in action, the fact the groundwork for it is underway means it will happen. This north-west corner will flourish with activity over the next few months. All of this is development and activity that illustrates we should have confidence

in the rebuilding of our city – that we are working towards an exciting, and everchanging, end result. Without doubt my message this summer is to re-familiarise yourself with the city. Be open to accidentally finding something new; all while looking at the gaps so that you can come back next year and enjoy what has filled the space in between. Visit www.caarc.co.nz.

FLASH FINISHES

Unassuming and ubiquitous, it has been with us since 1849, with this modest material’s sheer versatility and limitless possibility hiding in plain sight. Not anymore!

C

hristchurch’s own fast-forward, innovative and creative firm Flash Concrete is putting concrete centre stage in our homes and landscaping, showcasing its adaptability. Imagination is the only limit, given the sheer range of colours and finishes available. Now firmly entrenched in both the commercial and residential arena, polished concrete floors can express opulence or paredback industrial chic, modern or rustic looks, and every expression of style in between. Add the thermal properties, environmental sensibility, durability and easy maintenance, and its soaring popularity is a no-brainer. Co-owner of Flash Concrete, Jocelyn Grant says two different types of polished concrete are available – Mechanically Polished Concrete (MPC) and the most common, Grind and Seal (G&S). MPC is high end finish for indoors that shines the concrete itself with no top coating. The higher price point reflects the fact it will last a lifetime if maintained properly, making it one of the cheapest options available. G&S is an indoor/outdoor option that grinds the top layer of concrete to show as little or as much stone as desired. Finer diamonds remove visible scratching and prepare for a protective sealer in matte, semi-gloss or high-gloss. Grouting creates a smooth,

refined, glass-like surface. If follow-the-crowd kitchens are not your scene, the artisans at Flash Concrete can create a bespoke handmade concrete benchtop that will be unique to your kitchen. Typically, there are two ways to create the benchtops: Precast GFRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete), and Cast in Place. An explosion in the use of lightweight GFRC in the United States has found its way to New Zealand via Cory and Jocelyn Grant and the creative staff at Flash Concrete. Because of its super high strength when cured, the team can cast benchtops as thin as 20mm thick compared to the typical 70mm-100mm for standard cast in place benchtops. Cast in Place benchtops are formed and poured on site, either cast in Flash Concrete’s specially designed solid concrete, or GFRC mix. There is no size limit, but Cast in Place benchtops are weightier than Precast GRFC, so surrounding materials have to be taken into account. To appreciate the full range and flexibility, talk to Jocelyn and Cory, visit the displays at 32 Hawdon Street and the Home Ideas Centre Mandeville Street, or explore the website at www.flashconcrete.co.nz. It’s been a long time coming and is a very exciting step. Our continued growth is due to hard work and exceptional service. We take the utmost pride in what we do, whether replacing just a few doors, or designing and manufacturing your dream kitchen.” The new showroom is under construction and it is full steam ahead for the supply of new kitchens and kitchen ‘facelifts’ (fitting new benchtops, drawers and doors to existing cabinets) – the perfect solution when you like the layout but hate the look. Glen says the popular blue and green kitchens of 10-15 years ago are being refreshed with neutral clean looks in washed oak woodgrains, or drama is being added to homes through darker feature colours, often employed to complement or frame a contrasting colour. An onsite design, manufacture and installation team enables Install Concepts to specialise in complex work and problem solving, project managing your job from initial consult to arranging and coordinating sub trades at no extra cost. Glen says clients find the company through word of mouth and this is truly the greatest compliment. The team pride itself on quality workmanship, clear and seamless communication.

BEDROOM BEAUTIES By Melinda Collins

Upholstered bedheads have ditched their dated designs and are introducing an aesthetic that is as cool as it is comfy.

For savvy sleepers, there’s a wide range of selections to add some style cred to your snoozing space.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

GROWN UP GLAMOUR: A true classic, the buttoned bedhead is art deco at its finest, with its deliciously decadent detailing.

VELVET VIBES: If you’re feeling nostalgic and pining for a come-back of this classic, a velvet bedhead will make you go all soft inside!

MINIMAL MAGIC: Sometimes less really is more, with pared-back elegance offering a style statement all of its own.

VINYL VARIATIONS: At face value, vinyl may not scream X factor, but sometimes (particularly when there’s kids involved) an ‘easy clean’ aesthetic wins on the day. But there’s no reason you can’t add some cool cred’ to this relaxed vibe.

LAID-BACK LINEN: Linen is ticking all the right boxes at the moment across both fashion and homewares, with its ability to bring luxury to an otherwise laid-back look.

ENGAGING THE PROS

You may have spent the week watching The Block and you’ve decided taking a wall out to extend the dining room will work well with the new flat-pack kitchen that’s arriving next week. Except you’ve never actually used an electric drill before and your sledgehammer still has its price tag firmly attached.

For a Professional & Passionate Painter & Decorator Residential & Commercial

So just when is it the right time to engage the professionals? When it comes to hanging curtains, laying pavers or splashing some paint on the walls, there’s little risk involved – though if style isn’t your forté, it might be safer engaging an interior designer or colour consultant. As professionals are trained and qualified in their fields, they can often complete the tasks in a fraction of the time it will take you, so you do need to weigh up how much your time is worth. And, when it comes to a quality finish, chances are this too will trump what you’ve picked up from YouTube videos.

Let us transform your project today

When it comes to almost anything that involves water, gas or electricity however, even the simple jobs are best left to the professionals. Although at face value putting in a new light switch may seem like just connecting up a few wires, without the right techniques, equipment or training, there are numerous things which could potentially go wrong. Not only do these jobs carry the risk of physical harm, you risk voiding any product warranties and/or insurance if anything does go wrong, both now and in the future.

FLOCKING IN

Go on a treasure hunt in The Flock at The Tannery for unique, inspiring giftware and clothing of quality and conscience.

“I

source mainly locally made to support our economy and its craftspeople,” says owner Melody Leveridge. “If it’s from overseas, I ensure it’s strictly Certified Fairtrade.” The Flock’s natural skincare ranges are sublime. Using charming recycled packaging, Anoint, from Kerikeri comes in gift-boxes too. Anoint’s bath salts, soaps, lotions and lip balms are naturally nourishing. The Ingrid Starnes range is a mysteriously intoxicating unisex scent of vetyver and bergamot. New Zealand-made Triumph and Disaster is unisex too, using nature’s ingredients. Melody swears by its gentle, high-spectrum sun block. The clothing melds fabrics such as organic cotton with everlasting style. “Our biggest range is Wellington-based Kowtow, who won NZ’s number one sustainable company in May.” Australian-designed Elk clothing uses bamboo, cotton and lyocell – and also makes bags, shoes and jewellery. Its chlorineresistant, UPF50, swimwear feels like togs but is surprisingly made from recycled plastic bags!

Receiving a cash settlement for earthquake repairs to your home may lead to something of a quandary as you wonder what to do next.

There is help close at hand, in the form of McBride Construction; a building company that specialises in earthquake repairs and renovations. “Many people experience confusion and concern over the cash settlement process,” company owner Karl McBride says. “It can feel like a totally alien situation

having to organise home repairs. We can take over, assess the scope of the work and do all the hard stuff. This is also an excellent time to combine a renovation with the repair.” Karl has years of experience working overseas for construction companies. Having returned to his home province of

Canterbury, he has put together a highlyskilled and dedicated team of builders and contractors capable of managing every aspect of a renovation or repair. “We give each project the care and attention to detail it deserves. We want to see our clients back in their own beautifully repaired and enhanced homes, loving them just as much as they did before they were damaged.” The team is dedicated to helping people through the repair and cash settlement process, but also residential renovations, buying and repairing properties or working directly with clients. Recently completed projects involving design, full repair and fit out have resulted in the original home maintaining its previous character, but with a contemporary, stylish new look. DESIGNING ‘ADVANCED’ KITCHENS

With a dark timber floor and a curved layout that was difficult to move about in, a couple needed to renovate the kitchen of their late 20th century red brick house in Harewood. After meeting Advanced Joinery designers Jo Morrison and Edward Bowden, they never looked back.

78 December 14, 2017 Metropol

home

ADVERTORIAL

T

o showcase their clients’ vaulted ceiling in their existing Harewood home, Jo and Edward raised the height of the cabinetry. The layout, with its central island, allows free access all around the kitchen and flow to the outdoors. The clients sought “detail, but not too much detail”, and the result is clean Shaker-style cabinet doors and cornice trims. Based on their clients’ chosen floor tile in textured neutral grey and an existing wall colour, the kitchen cabinetry is show-stoppingly gorgeous in Resene BlackWhite and Resene Black. The glamour stakes are further raised by topping the black island with a Caesarstone benchtop in Snow and the white cabinetry with an Absolute Black Granite benchtop. Genius! The clients’ brief included a family breakfast bar, and a drinks preparation and storage area. The drinks cabinet, with a mirrored back and lighting, is accessed through ‘pocket doors’ which cleverly fold away. Pocket doors are employed again in the pantry to the left of the fridge. Upper cabinets are glass fronted and lit for display. Advanced Joinery also renovated the laundry using white subway tiles and natural wood basket drawers, to create a clean, fresh and eminently usable space. Both the clients and the Advanced Joinery team are thrilled with the end results. Metropol talks to Jo and Edward about clever design, kitchen trends and the wow factor. Jo and Edward, with so much choice in product and style, how do you know what to design for each client? Complementing the house is key and you factor in the desires of the client. They usually leave it to us to get the best layout, functionality and storage for their budget. Fine tuning comes next, according to the client’s needs and tastes. We are honest with the client if we believe the client’s ideas won’t work. For example, there has been a fashion for 5-10 years for glossy finishes and that simply doesn’t work in some houses. What are your goals when you begin a kitchen design for a client? The aim is to exceed client expectations. While the drawings are accurate and detailed, you always want the client to experience the ‘wow’ factor when they see the kitchen installed. What are the trends and changes in kitchens as we head towards the third decade of the 21st century? From open centrally located kitchens, they are a little more tucked away, perhaps around a corner. There is more depth, mood, and earthiness to colour with tans, browns, and blacks used, plus natural materials such as wood and concrete. We are often opening up separate pantries a little; wall tiles are undulated or patterned and lighting is playing a bigger role all the time, in ceilings, bulkheads, under bench and inside cabinetry.

PLUGGED-IN By Ben Selby

When the concept of electric powered vehicles first entered the collective consciousness, it was met with scepticism. However, during the past decade, electric cars have seen a resurgence in popularity, with many manufacturers offering their own unique take.

W

hether it’s a hybrid or full electric, an increasing number of buyers are getting excited by the idea of never paying for petrol again. Plus, with the future of the internal combustion engine looking darker every year as a result of climate change and shrinking oil reserves, it may be time for us to ‘plug-in’ and embrace electric cars as the new norm. The manufacturer leading the charge in this revolutionary resurgence in electric motoring is Tesla, which has already made in-roads with the likes of the all-electric and savagely fast Model S luxury saloon and Model X gull-wing five-door hatch appearing in small numbers. Of course Tesla does not have the market to itself. Electric cars from BMW (i3 and i8 Supercar), Renault (ZOE) and Hyundai (IONIQ) have proved popular, with many other brands jumping on the electric bandwagon.

IT MAY BE TIME FOR US TO ‘PLUG-IN’ AND EMBRACE ELECTRIC CARS

One of the most popular electric cars on our roads is the Nissan LEAF. With plenty of new and used models appearing on the market, it’s very rare not to pull up next to one on your morning commute, not that you will hear it. With a 24kWh or 30kWh battery pack, the Leaf, in Gen 2 variant is good for 200kms on a single charge along with an array of features, such as a reversing camera, full leather, Bluetooth and traction control. If you are after an electric car, there are options available to suit a variety of budgets. Plus with more groundbreaking models on the horizon more and plans afoot by world governments to outlaw the sale of new petrol cars by 2040, it’s looking increasingly likely the role of petrol powered cars will move from a tool to a hobby.

M

agnum’s life of solving cases, living in the guest house of a beachfront Hawaiian mansion and having a then-new Ferrari to drive, was the bee’s knees to so many. However, the Ferrari 308 was already a legend long before the silver screen. The 308 was Ferrari’s true successor to the original baby in the range, the Dino 246 GT. Launched in 1975 at the Paris Motor Show, the stunning wedge-shaped 308 was designed by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti, famous for his work on the Dino and Ferrari’s gorgeous 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Initially only available in hard top GTB form, an open top GTS with removable roof was introduced in 1977. Initially carburetted, its 3L V8 was mated to a fivespeed manual box, producing 255hp at 6,600rpm. The 1980 GTSi featured here incorporated mechanical fuel injection; the first Ferrari to do so. Inside, the driving position is classic Italian, leaving you man-splaying your legs and stretching your arms to grab the wheel. The buttock-hugging leather chairs hold you tight and visibility, both front and rear, is generous for a Fezza. Fun fact, in Magnum PI, the Ferrari’s seat was specially modified so Tom Selleck’s lanky frame could fit comfortably. On the move with the top off, the 308 begins an all out assault on the senses. Its epic baritone exhaust and the feeling of heat from the V8 leaves you feeling part of the machine itself. There is a tape deck stereo, but completely pointless when you have the perfect soundtrack directly behind you. The classic Ferrari open gated five-speed box is a joy to use, with every change accompanied by a snick-snick sound common among manual Ferraris. The pedal box and wheel feel slightly offset, but this is nothing new in Italians of this era. Plus, despite being

37 years old, the 308 is still pretty brisk, though a new Golf GTi would leave it for dead. Tackling twists and turns in the Ferrari is a real giggle. Drop down into third, grip the wheel left or right, plant your boot and you are flying. Sharp throttle response and instant steering feedback as you blast out of each bend, riding a wave of torque and Latin exhaust noise, leaving you grinning from ear to ear. The price of classic Ferraris is continuing to climb. Therefore, now is the time to buy, if you have craved a prancing horse in your stable. The 308 represents an iconic era of sublime Italian design and engineering, making it one of the most popular Ferraris ever, and a great investment for the future. Hawaiian shirts however, do not come as standard.

I

was busy admiring the beautiful lines on the slope-back, thinking I was looking at an Audi or a Porsche when I noticed the VW logo. What? I thought I knew the range pretty well, but I’d never seen what I was looking at before. Turns out it was the new Arteon R-line. Volkswagen has been dipping its commercial toes into the luxury car market and it’s made for quite impressive viewing. Prices start at $74,990 and this 206kW R-line turbo-charged 4-cylinder, 1994 litre, 7-speed, 0-100kmh in 5.6, 350 Nm in torque is both great to drive and easy on the eye. All the bells and whistles when it comes to safety features, including driver fatigue warning, forward collision warning and more. It’s loaded with features. The elongated contours give a very stylish form and provide you with loads of interior room to boot. A sloping back and desirable rear end make it a slinky wee number.

The massage function on the leather seats is amazing and helps you really relax; I mean, who wants to leave the car when you get home? The 9.2-inch touchscreen features gesture control. That’s right, my boys had a wonderful time choosing radio stations and songs on the multimedia dash by just waving their hands and the sound system was top notch for the phone. In some vehicles you feel like you need to scream to be heard or you can’t hear them - not with the Arteon and its stereo. The Montevideo alloy rims were very stylish, which you can upgrade, but who needs to when they look this good? Great to drive, it’s stylish with a quality interior and interactive dash that Volkswagen is so good at doing – it ticks a lot of boxes for me. If you’re a Volkswagen fan, you won’t take much convincing to take a test drive, but if you’re not, it’s well worth considering for both power and style. Check it out at Miles Continental. @nickhenare

in Europe, but it’s another to experience just how capable these vehicles are in your own backyard,” Archibalds Group Marketing Manager Marcus Shaw says. “We work with the Land Rover range day in, day out, so we know how good the product is on paper, but it’s always great to test the off-road technology in real-world situations.” There was real comradery at the end of

the day, with a challenge on who could retain the most water in a fish bowl while traversing a rather challenging course. The winner heads to Auckland to compete in a fun challenge against other successful candidates. Needless to say, I was in the bottom five, as speed is not your friend in this challenge. What a great experience and well done to Archibalds and Land Rover for putting it on.

Unveiled at a Tesla company presentation last month, along with the new full electric semi truck, the new Roadster “will be the fastest production car ever, period,” according to Tesla CEO, Elon Musk. A bold claim, but if the blistering performance figures are anything to go by, watch out Bugatti and McLaren. In Plaid Mode (yes, it’s actually called that), zero to 100km/h is achieved in a mind-boggling 1.9 seconds. Plus, zero to 160km/h is dealt with in a mere 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 405km/h plus is simply mental. If that wasn’t impressive enough, Tesla also claims

an astounding 10,000Nm of torque. To put that into perspective, the highest torque output for current road cars are pushing it at 1500Nm. This is down to the Roadster’s electric 250kW/hour battery pack, which also gives a range of 620 miles. The Roadster 2 also has four seats. Prices will start at $200,000 US, with Tesla asking for a $50,000 US deposit up front, severely undercutting its competition. Everyone in the supercar business should be very worried.
