When you enter the cavernous space of Creative Junk, that famous quote of ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ immediately comes to mind. Here is a veritable treasure trove - a staggering A-Z of recycled materials awaiting transformation into works of art.

If you feel your creative skills are a bit jaded, Creative Junk runs workshops on the premises, and it also visits schools and early childhood centres. So what kind of people would you find at Creative Junk - apart from children and their parents? “Artists; scrapbookers; theatre people; churches; special needs groups; event organisers; steam punkers; make-up artists; florists… shall I continue?” laughs Christine. Creative Junk’s main funders over the last year were Christchurch City Council, the Rata Foundation, Lion Foundation, Creative Communities and Pub Charity. We look at Creative Junk’s facebook page. Wow! These people do fantastic work in our community. There they are at the Santa Christmas Parades, and at the Kids’ Festa celebrations. HIS OWN D Tell us about your journey into architecture – was it always your desire to work in the industry? Yes, other than the classic boyhood dreams of being a policeman or a pilot! I remember being about 14, and a friend and I using the student phone at Christchurch Boys’ High to call the Polytech to inquire what I needed to do to apply for a drawing or draughtsman course. So yes, most of high school it was definitely my focus! My Grandfather was probably the biggest influence on my career path, he was a draughtsman and before that he was a joiner. I remember him always making stuff; it was fascinating watching the precise nature in which he worked. The exposure to precision and accuracy from a young age meant I knew I wanted to be involved in a career such as architecture. What does a day look like for you? Hectic! Most mornings I try to have breakfast with my family and be at the office by 8. I’m usually juggling many different projects that are each demanding in their own way. We believe our clients have a right to have high expectations and to have them met, however this means my days are usually booked well in advance with internal team meetings, external meetings with clients, suppliers, consultants, site visits, project handovers...the list goes on. With so much going on, creative time usually doesn’t occur until the evenings or on weekends.

It’s a timeless proverb – ‘nothing of significance ever comes easy’. Awardwinning Architect Cymon Allfrey is the protagonist in a success story that speaks to this sentiment. Metropol talks to the entrepreneur about his career evolution.

In a market that is arguably oversaturated, what does it mean to be distinguishable and what does it take to achieve this status? We have spent a lot of time understanding why people work with us, studying those that return and creating a strategy to attract new clients using the same principles. We’ve become distinguishable on the back of excellent work but we also have a strategy in place to ensure that people have the opportunity to hear our opinions, understand our values and connect with us on a personal level. There are a lot of great architects in Christchurch. I believe what sets us apart from the pack is that we

DESTINY engage with people in a far more open and personal way. Which, to be honest, is a high-risk strategy. We want our potential clients to get to know us as well as our work. But if their values and opinions don’t align with ours then they may choose not to engage with us, even if they like our work.

For me, the biggest constraint as an architect, was working through these projects, often they were long and drawn out processes, requiring a lot of energy, with clients who were in such a negative space for a circumstance that should have an aspirational outcome. This negative space influences the entire project, often resulting in a final product that wasn’t as ambitious as it could have been. This wasn’t anybody’s fault, it was simply the way we, as a city, coped with such great loss. Now, that we have started to get through that work that was borne from need or urgency, we again have clients in a much more positive space, desiring that aspirational outcome and challenging us to exceed their

Though people are now seeing opportunities and acting upon them, there was a time where all of our project briefs came from a place of loss.

Do you believe spontaneity has any role to play in architecture, or do you consider strategy to be your guiding and governing principle? Each project is different; the client brief, the site and the team working on it differs. It is impossible to have the same

recipe twice. This requires processes and rigor to ensure a consistent result but the need to be nimble and adaptable to overcome any issues that arise. Spontaneity has its place to a degree - as an example a lot of creative decisions are not derived from logical process. We still need to recognise that procedure and methods are what guarantee a reliable and harmonious outcome. Flexibility within a carefully structured process allows us to produce designs that exceed our clients expectations regardless of what bumps in the road may occur. What does success look like for you? Success is a glass of pinot on the terrace! We work through a really significant journey with our clients, we are with them from the beginning as they share the dream they are looking for. We want to be there at the end. For us, the glass of pinot on the finished terrace means we are still welcome, they enjoy our company, we’ve built and maintained a strong relationship and we have been part of achieving all that they envisaged and a lot more! Where to from here? I work in an environment that’s pretty exhausting! So, in the short term, I want to enjoy a nice break over the summer, spend time with family and friends, and generally recharge the batteries for another busy year in 2017. In the long term, I want to know that we’ve made a positive contribution to the built environment of Christchurch. I want to continue to hire people with high skill levels who can maintain our meticulous work standards and engage with clients who align with our hopes and aspirations. Most importantly, I want the business that I’ve built to endure in one way or another beyond me and for the qualities, values and principles that I have set to remain.

We look through the gap in the wall and watch the jeweller bent over her work, and the fashion designer behind her sewing machine, while seated at a long table before us are a group of women, enjoying a beautiful lunch provided by the amazing people of Chef’s Table.

Preston indicates the area that we are seated, rear of the cafe. “And here is our Showcase Space. It’s a multi-purpose venue where anything and everything happens – workshops, film screenings, music and literary performances, exhibitions, launches – basically whatever people put to us; if it’s doable, it shall be done!” There are some eye-catching art works on the walls and on plinths that absorb our attention for a few moments. Preston outlines how the exhibit calendar works at XCHC. “We have three curated events here – resident led, guest led and XCHC Friday.” It’s nearing 2.30pm and the diners at Chef’s Table start to disperse, their relaxed body language and happy faces reflect yet another pleasurable dining experience. Preston smiles, “The café, of course, is the Sharing Connection component, and probably the most important component in that it’s the social hub where all can come together, eat the freshest of food, and just enjoy hanging out. It’s a place people can gather knowing they’ll find they’re amongst people who they can identify with, fellow artists and all kinds of creatives.” Café staff begin removing tables and open up the floor space. Brian, 42, has perfected his passion

As customer care is her passion, the couple jointly has the recipe for success. They have two little boys, Rocco and the youngest, Jett – who loves to visit dad at work. The business also supplies many restaurants and cafés in the Canterbury region. Halfway down Lyttelton’s Godley Quay, nestled against a steep bank, stands a two storey building with a distinctive Maori motif painted on its side. You are now at Whakaraupō, the only traditional Maori Carving Centre operating in the South Island.

To your right is a staircase that leads up to the office where Whakaraupō’s liason/co-ordinator, Linda Goodwin, will make you coffee while giving a potted history of Whakaraupō.

Rapaki is home to Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, one of four Ngāi Tahu Papatipu Rūnanga (marae based communities) situated on Banks Peninsula. Rapaki Marae is also home to Caine Tuwhare, Tutor and Kaiwhakairo (Carver) here at Whakaraupo.” Linda’s background is in public health, and she has done undertaken extensive study on the Treaty of Waitangi. “I’ve worked with the Maori community for over 25 years, and as a Pakeha feel very privileged to be in this role.” You finish your coffee and Linda ushers you downstairs to meet Caine. Tom is a usually bouncy wee wirehaired Jack Russell Terrier who lives on a farm in mid-Canterbury. He usually spends all day zipping around behind his Mum on her horses, but had recently lost his spark.

e had constant sneezing, snorting and gagging and a horrible green nasal discharge. Dogs donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get head colds so we decided to investigate. Investigating nasal problems can be very difficult for vets as normal x-rays donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t show changes very well and even using a fine scope to look inside the nose is limited due to access and offers limited evaluation of the nasal turbinates and frontal sinuses.

A CT scan of his head was performed at Ourvets St Albans. This revealed a small region of erosion of the fine bones deep in his nose (the nasal turbinates). Luckily it was mostly limited in size and wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t involving the frontal sinuses. These changes would not show up on normal xrays and a CT scan was essential to visualise the nasal chamber and frontal sinuses. A diagnosis of nasal aspergillosis was made and treatment commenced. Aspergillosis is a fungus that is found in the ground and on vegetation. If given the right set of circumstances, it will grow deep in the nose and cause nasty chronic infection and damage. It may eventually be fatal by invading into the brain or bloodstream if left untreated. It is relatively common in farm dogs and working or field dogs that spend time in the outdoors. We treated Tom at Ourvets St Albans with three courses of nasal antifungal medication. He was anaesthetised and his nose packed with a thick sticky solution which kills the fungus. Tom has made a fabulous recovery. He no longer needs a box of Kleenex tissues every week and is back chasing rabbits and rats on the farm.

Grilled Hasselback Chilli Carrots By The Villas

Have you ever hasslebacked a carrot, or any other vegetable for that matter? It’s a simple technique where you take a single ingredient, such as the humble carrot in this case, and make a series of cuts along the vegetable so that you don’t cut all the way through. When the carrot is roasting, the cuts open up and make way for the oils and other toppings to creep into the cuts, leaving you with a delicious tasting and great looking side dish to serve on your Christmas table.

Ingredients • 5 large carrots, peeled and ends trimmed • 2 fresh red chillies (seeds removed for less heat if you prefer) • 3 roasted red peppers • 4 cloves garlic • 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper • Extra virgin olive oil, plus more for carrots • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • ½ teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for seasoning • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more for seasoning Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line an oven tray with baking paper. 2. Simmer carrots for 10 minutes, until softened. Transfer to a chopping board to cool. 3. For the sauce, in a blender, pulse the fresh chillies, red

peppers, garlic, crushed red pepper, ⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper until smooth. 4. Place carrots on chopping board with a wooden spoon on either side. Make cuts ¼ inch apart, and as far down as the wooden spoons will allow. 5. Drizzle carrots generously with extra virgin olive oil and salt and pepper. 6. Roast carrots at 375°F for 20 minutes. Brush with more extra virgin olive oil and generously spoon sauce over carrots. Roast 20 minutes more, or until carrots are crispy and brown. 7. This is a great looking (and tasty) side for the Christmas table or serve carrots with your choice of meats, fish, or vegetable dishes any time.

I’m the first to concede I don’t have the same culinary prowess flowing through my veins in the way other family member’s seem to have it in their DNA.

hile I most certainly have a spoilt palate, I’m not a natural in the kitchen. Needless to say, I was rather bashful as I arrived at my first Asian Garden Cooking Class. My worries were unfounded, however, as I was immediately welcomed like family by my fellow classmates and our attentive tutors. There would be few superlatives that could describe what a profoundly enjoyable experience it was. At the beginning of the four hour class, we were welcomed into the state-of-the-art kitchen space, adjoining a

beautiful preparation/dining area. A table awaited us, dressed to the nines with a floral arrangement and our very own branded aprons. We donned our name badges, quickly became acquainted with the group, sharing our aspirations for the class, and were given an overview of the mouthwatering menu: pork balls, black pepper beef, chicken pad Thai, red Thai prawn curry and chicken larb. Our highly-experienced chefs of the world then led us out into the stunning

on-site garden where we were given the chance to smell and taste some of the delicious herbs that would be used in our dishes – Vietnamese mint, lemongrass, lime leaf – my tongue and my hands were grateful beneficiaries of the fragrant and super fresh products. On return to the preparation area, we were each given our own work station where we were guided through every step of every recipe. Thorough, engaging and educational instruction from our tutors was punctuated by lots of laughter, excellent camaraderie and banter between group members and plenty of Q+A. The first two hours were concentrated on prep – I was particularly thrilled to learn how to use a knife with ease and skill – something that had previously evaded me. I also relished in the opportunity to learn about each of the ingredients and the role they played in the overall flavour. Hour three found us at the coalface with the opportunity to turn our hand at mastering the woks in the kitchen. Our hard work (although you could hardly call it that!) was rewarded throughout with samples and ice cold orange juice. A sit down meal with all the class members was the culmination of a wonderful experience. Would I visit the school again? In a heartbeat. Eight glasses of water a day is the proverbial path to good health, but it’s not always easy.

ith roughly 20 percent of our daily H2O intake coming from solid foods, why not quench your thirst with these hugely hydrating foods? With the highest water content of any solid food, cucumber makes a great summertime snack; pop it in a salad or serve it up with some hummus. Although its darker green rellies trump iceberg lettuce in the nutrition stakes, it’s a different story when it comes to water content with this crispy vege a great addition to sandwiches or as a bed for a protein-rich chicken salad. Iceberg lettuce may have higher water content, but raw spinach on your sandwich or salad provides nearly as much built-in hydration, with an added nutritional punch. They’re the juicy red mainstay of salads, sauces and sandwiches, but tomatoes’ tasty siblings – sweet cherry and grape varieties – also make an excellent hydrating snack. Although the old wives’ tale about celery containing negative calories is just that – it’s not far wrong. Like all high-water content foods, celery has very few calories and the powerful medley of fibre and water helps to fill you up.

Like the name suggests, watermelon is full of water. But this magical melon is also among the richest sources of the cancer-fighting antioxidant lycopene. In addition to lots of water, cauliflower’s unassuming florets are packed with a nutritional punch that offers the ability to help lower cholesterol and fight cancer. Like its cousin cauliflower, broccoli adds a delicious crunch to a salad and is also up there in the water-content and nutritional stakes. Bell peppers of all shades have high-water content, but the green varieties lead the pack and, although all berries are good foods for hydration, juicy red strawberries are easily the best of the bunch with 91 percent water content.

On 6 December, Down by the Liffey Gallery celebrated an opening night of one of their monthly exhibitions, but more importantly, they celebrated five years of being.

The gallery has around 135 members - some local, some from the city and some from beyond.

The community gallery is housed in the former Coronation Library, built in 1911. “It’s a good space for exhibitions,” says Jim Conolly, Gallery Chairman, “not too big, and not too small”. The gallery has around 135 members some local, some from the city and some from beyond. It tries to have examples of different forms of art in any one exhibition; for example, two painters displaying alongside 3D artists such as a potter or sculptor. Jim shows a copper sculpture of a small bird perched daintily on the fretwork

branches of her nest; her nest is a burnished copper bowl. It’s an exquisite piece. Once a year, as part of its Community Month, the Gallery exhibits pre-schools, primary schools and high school art. In 2012, Down By The Liffey Gallery was awarded the Sensational Art Award by the Selwyn Arts Council, of which Jim and wife Francie are very proud. They both make special mention of their volunteers. “We couldn’t have done it without them. They’re integral to our success.” The volunteers host the Gallery Wednesdays to Sundays from 10am to 4pm. Jim mentions an entry in the visitor’s book. “It said, ‘Thank you for bringing art to Lincoln’. That’s why we do this.” Info: www.downbytheliffeygallery.com

I’ve always tried to lead a deeply purposeful life (at least that’s what I tell myself) and December’s arrival usually gives me the opportunity to reflect on that purpose. As anyone juggling work, home, children, family, travel and life knows, it’s never easy and some years shine a little brighter than others. 2016 has been a huge year with an avalanche of professional and personal achievements dominating the calendar. That’s just a small glimpse of the work portion of a life lived at full pace, alongside a personal space that has also been busy. So now it’s Christmas and I’m going to rest, get merry and think about my next ‘bookmark’!

Solid oak vanity units with mitred corners, curved internal doors and high gloss black lacquered kitchen cabinetry, tell the tale of Murray Hewitt Joinery’s work.

urray and the team at MHJ provided a full house of joinery for the new Waitikiri home, working with designer Trish Simpson, the builder, and the client themselves. “We started with the internal doors, stairs and handrails, and the highly lacquered front entry door, and as the job progressed we worked on the bathrooms, wardrobes and laundry. The kitchen joinery was timed in with the installation of stone bench tops,” Murray says. “And the

final piece was the black lacquered cabinet doors in the kitchen.” Vanities in the two full bathrooms and powder room were manufactured from solid oak, the mitred corners creating a thick and chunky look that was teamed up with black basins. Wardrobe joinery was constructed from white melamine, with the master bedroom’s walk-in robe including a lacquered exterior and Blum runners for a soft close function. Coloured melamine fronts featured in the laundry finished off with high pressure laminate (HPL) tops. As with many full house joinery projects the main component was in the kitchen. Internal joinery consisted of white melamine on Blum Antaro runners with soft close, and high gloss black lacquer cabinetry teamed with frosted glass fronts for higher spaces. Tucked in behind the kitchen was a scullery, with a sink and an array of storage areas, and coloured glass splashbacks in both areas. The expansive kitchen island was fronted with American White Oak slats and under bench LED lighting, with a wine fridge at one end. Precision Stone installed the Quartz Crystal Stella White stone top, chosen specifically to enable the use of one single piece for the 3200 centimetre long and 1400 centimetre wide island bench top. MHJ worked closely with a variety of subcontractors during the build, and the high gloss lacquer work as well as staining and pre-finishing of wooden componentry in the vanities and kitchen islands was completed by MF Turnbull Ltd at the client’s request. Murray has 25 years of experience in the industry, founding MHJ back in 1998 with wife Julie. Over the years they have built up a great team of dedicated joiners and cabinet makers, with Steve, Clayton, Craig, David and Chris, and project manager Daniel, following each job through from manufacture to installation. Members of both Master Joiners and the National Kitchen & Bathroom Association, they have the ability to work on a wide variety of projects.
