reative Junk has been in Christchurch for over thirty years, making the move to its present premises at 25 Disraeli Street in 2008. Christine Jackson, Co-ordinator of Creative Junk, loves her job. “It’s the best. Watching people get fired up over projects – the excitement on their faces when they find exactly what they had in mind.”
Here is a veritable treasure trove - a staggering A-Z of recycled materials awaiting transformation into works of art.
LOVELY JUBBLY!
By Céline Gibson
When you enter the cavernous space of Creative Junk, that famous quote of ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ immediately comes to mind. Here is a veritable treasure trove - a staggering A-Z of recycled materials awaiting transformation into works of art.
If you feel your creative skills are a bit jaded, Creative Junk runs workshops on the premises, and it also visits schools and early childhood centres. So what kind of people would you find at Creative Junk - apart from children and their parents? “Artists; scrapbookers; theatre people; churches; special needs groups; event organisers; steam punkers; make-up artists; florists… shall I continue?” laughs Christine. Creative Junk’s main funders over the last year were Christchurch City Council, the Rata Foundation, Lion Foundation, Creative Communities and Pub Charity. We look at Creative Junk’s facebook page. Wow! These people do fantastic work in our community. There they are at the Santa Christmas Parades, and at the Kids’ Festa celebrations. There’s an outfit they created for Cup Day in the 2013 Wearable Arts Competition Category – it’s a black and white stunner! Creative Junk - you rock! Info: www.creativejunk.org.nz

The architect of
HIS OWN D Tell us about your journey into architecture – was it always your desire to work in the industry? Yes, other than the classic boyhood dreams of being a policeman or a pilot! I remember being about 14, and a friend and I using the student phone at Christchurch Boys’ High to call the Polytech to inquire what I needed to do to apply for a drawing or draughtsman course. So yes, most of high school it was definitely my focus! My Grandfather was probably the biggest influence on my career path, he was a draughtsman and before that he was a joiner. I remember him always making stuff; it was fascinating watching the precise nature in which he worked. The exposure to precision and accuracy from a young age meant I knew I wanted to be involved in a career such as architecture. What does a day look like for you? Hectic! Most mornings I try to have breakfast with my family and be at the office by 8. I’m usually juggling many different projects that are each demanding in their own way. We believe our clients have a right to have high expectations and to have them met, however this means my days are usually booked well in advance with internal team meetings, external meetings with clients, suppliers, consultants, site visits, project handovers...the list goes on. With so much going on, creative time usually doesn’t occur until the evenings or on weekends.
It’s a timeless proverb – ‘nothing of significance ever comes easy’. Awardwinning Architect Cymon Allfrey is the protagonist in a success story that speaks to this sentiment. Metropol talks to the entrepreneur about his career evolution.
In a market that is arguably oversaturated, what does it mean to be distinguishable and what does it take to achieve this status? We have spent a lot of time understanding why people work with us, studying those that return and creating a strategy to attract new clients using the same principles. We’ve become distinguishable on the back of excellent work but we also have a strategy in place to ensure that people have the opportunity to hear our opinions, understand our values and connect with us on a personal level. There are a lot of great architects in Christchurch. I believe what sets us apart from the pack is that we

DESTINY engage with people in a far more open and personal way. Which, to be honest, is a high-risk strategy. We want our potential clients to get to know us as well as our work. But if their values and opinions don’t align with ours then they may choose not to engage with us, even if they like our work.
For me, the biggest constraint as an architect, was working through these projects, often they were long and drawn out processes, requiring a lot of energy, with clients who were in such a negative space for a circumstance that should have an aspirational outcome. This negative space influences the entire project, often resulting in a final product that wasn’t as ambitious as it could have been. This wasn’t anybody’s fault, it was simply the way we, as a city, coped with such great loss. Now, that we have started to get through that work that was borne from need or urgency, we again have clients in a much more positive space, desiring that aspirational outcome and challenging us to exceed their
Now, that we have started to get through that work that was borne from need or urgency, we again have clients in a much more positive space, desiring that aspirational outcome and challenging us to exceed their expectations. To what extent have the Canterbury Earthquakes placed constraints on the industry and conversely, how have they enabled it to evolve? The Canterbury Earthquakes bought numerous constraints and so the landscape of our profession is significantly different in a lot of ways. Though people are now seeing opportunities and acting upon them, there was a time where all of our project briefs came from a place of loss.
expectations. Not necessarily evolving from the earthquakes, rather a natural progression as the city continues to grow and develop. Do you believe spontaneity has any role to play in architecture, or do you consider strategy to be your guiding and governing principle? Each project is different; the client brief, the site and the team working on it differs. It is impossible to have the same
recipe twice. This requires processes and rigor to ensure a consistent result but the need to be nimble and adaptable to overcome any issues that arise. Spontaneity has its place to a degree - as an example a lot of creative decisions are not derived from logical process. We still need to recognise that procedure and methods are what guarantee a reliable and harmonious outcome. Flexibility within a carefully structured process allows us to produce designs that exceed our clients expectations regardless of what bumps in the road may occur. What does success look like for you? Success is a glass of pinot on the terrace! We work through a really significant journey with our clients, we are with them from the beginning as they share the dream they are looking for. We want to be there at the end. For us, the glass of pinot on the finished terrace means we are still welcome, they enjoy our company, we’ve built and maintained a strong relationship and we have been part of achieving all that they envisaged and a lot more! Where to from here? I work in an environment that’s pretty exhausting! So, in the short term, I want to enjoy a nice break over the summer, spend time with family and friends, and generally recharge the batteries for another busy year in 2017. In the long term, I want to know that we’ve made a positive contribution to the built environment of Christchurch. I want to continue to hire people with high skill levels who can maintain our meticulous work standards and engage with clients who align with our hopes and aspirations. Most importantly, I want the business that I’ve built to endure in one way or another beyond me and for the qualities, values and principles that I have set to remain.
Are you or someone you know considering buying or selling property? I would love to help! I am committed to outstanding service and a professional experience. Call me today for a free appraisal or no obligation chat. Energy, Efficiency & Excellence

Preston indicates the area that we are seated, rear of the cafe. “And here is our Showcase Space. It’s a multi-purpose venue where anything and everything happens – workshops, film screenings, music and literary performances, exhibitions, launches – basically whatever people put to us; if it’s doable, it shall be done!” There are some eye-catching art works on the walls and on plinths that absorb our attention for a few moments. Preston outlines how the exhibit calendar works at XCHC. “We have three curated events here – resident led, guest led and XCHC Friday.” It’s nearing 2.30pm and the diners at Chef’s Table start to disperse, their relaxed body language and happy faces reflect yet another pleasurable dining experience. Preston smiles, “The café, of course, is the Sharing Connection component, and probably the most important component in that it’s the social hub where all can come together, eat the freshest of food, and just enjoy hanging out. It’s a place people can gather knowing they’ll find they’re amongst people who they can identify with, fellow artists and all kinds of creatives.” Café staff begin removing tables and open up the floor space. Preston chuckles, “The seating will look different tomorrow, I promise you. No day is the same here.” Info: www.xchc.co.nz

ON THE
RISE
One year at the helm of Breads of Europe and a family bakery business is on the rise.
P
urchased in a leap of faith, Brian Cook and Lydia Schroder have embraced the opportunity to sink their teeth into the wholesale bakery business specialising in European style bread, made from scratch with no preservatives or emulsifiers - it’s the first time Breads of Europe has been owned by a baker. Brian, 42, has perfected his passion
since age 15, starting at Blanchfields in Greymouth and enjoying 10 years at Sydenham Bakery. He is an accomplished baker whose focus is creating beautiful, handmade product. In 2010 the pair opened Una Bakery, a popular bakery in Huntsbury, which they sold in August 2016
to concentrate on Breads of Europe. Lydia, the Operations and Sales Manager, has worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years, in that time working in and managing many of Christchurch’s iconic restaurants including The Coca Club, Indochine and Chinwag. As customer care is her passion, the couple jointly has the recipe for success. They have two little boys, Rocco and the youngest, Jett – who loves to visit dad at work. A great selection of Breads of Europe’s range is sold at FreshChoice Merivale, Barrington and Parklands; Supervalue Sumner Lyttelton, and Fendalton, and Raeward Fresh Tower Junction. The business also supplies many restaurants and cafés in the Canterbury region. Surplus product is donated to primary schools, Aviva and youth groups. “Our focus is to really get to know our customers,” Lydia says. “The last year has been full of challenges, but people have noticed improvements in both the product and service.” Visit www.breadsofeurope.co.nz

Tom has made a fabulous recovery and is back chasing rabbits and rats on the farm.
giving a terrier a new lease of life
Tom is a usually bouncy wee wirehaired Jack Russell Terrier who lives on a farm in mid-Canterbury. He usually spends all day zipping around behind his Mum on her horses, but had recently lost his spark.
H
e had constant sneezing, snorting and gagging and a horrible green nasal discharge. Dogs don’t get head colds so we decided to investigate. Investigating nasal problems can be very difficult for vets as normal x-rays don’t show changes very well and even using a fine scope to look inside the nose is limited due to access and offers limited evaluation of the nasal turbinates and frontal sinuses.
20 December 15, 2016 Metropol
A CT scan of his head was performed at Ourvets St Albans. This revealed a small region of erosion of the fine bones deep in his nose (the nasal turbinates). Luckily it was mostly limited in size and wasn’t involving the frontal sinuses. These changes would not show up on normal xrays and a CT scan was essential to visualise the nasal chamber and frontal sinuses. A diagnosis of nasal aspergillosis was made and treatment commenced. Aspergillosis is a fungus that is found in the ground and on vegetation. If given the right set of circumstances, it will grow deep in the nose and cause nasty chronic infection and damage. It may eventually be fatal by invading into the brain or bloodstream if left untreated. It is relatively common in farm dogs and working or field dogs that spend time in the outdoors. We treated Tom at Ourvets St Albans with three courses of nasal antifungal medication. He was anaesthetised and his nose packed with a thick sticky solution which kills the fungus. Tom has made a fabulous recovery. He no longer needs a box of Kleenex tissues every week and is back chasing rabbits and rats on the farm.

THE OPPORTUNITY
OF A LIFETIME Generations of aspiring ballerinas have found their feet with Sharon Howells School of Ballet in Upper Riccarton. The school is recognised as one of the best throughout New Zealand for the young.
A
s the only Royal Academy of Ballet Examiner in Christchurch and a lifetime member of the Academy, Sharon’s infinite wisdom has been received by thousands of students who have thrived under her tutelage and leadership. The opportunities afforded by training with Sharon - who takes pupils from the age of four - was highlighted recently during a once in a lifetime opportunity with the Imperial Russian Ballet Company. “The students from 6 to 14 years of age were delighted to share the stage with professional dancers in the Nutcracker at the Isaac Theatre Royal on 26 & 27 November,” Sharon comments.
With only one rehearsal with the professional dancers, the children were taught the choreography by Sharon and approved by the Russian Dance Mistress. “They did a fantastic job showcasing their dancing skills and adapted quickly to the demands of performing to over 3000 people.”
The school is recognised as one of the best throughout New Zealand for the young. 021 4 BELLE (021 423 553) Taking a personal and hands-on role with ruth@thecateringbelle.co.nz every single child at her school, Sharon MENUS loves to offer a unique opportunity where DAYTIME foundations to flourishCATERINGCANAPÉS are laid very early on. Their exhibits confront the stuff we’d rather not think about like the decimation of the honeybee, consumerism, air pollution and deforestation. Here is a word to remember – ‘Anthropocene’. It’s a word used to describe the period in which human activity has influenced climate and environment, but not in a positive way. Precarious Nature challenges us all to think about where we stand in defending an already seriously compromised global ecosystem. The exhibition also features dynamic public events, talks and screenings. We stop before the haunting photograph ‘No Vertical Song – The Dead Bee Portrait #2, 2015’ by photographer Anne Noble. TREAT YOURSELF

Christmas is a time of magic, but it can also be a time of stress with last-minute shopping in overcrowded, overheated stores and battles for the last carpark space.
T
he team at Merivale Mall believe that Christmas is also about needing some ‘me time’. They believe their customers deserve to treat themselves as well as their friends and family during the festive season. Their unhurried, calm environment is perfect to do some gift shopping, and to make things as easy as possible, there are three late nights coming up when they remain open until 8pm. They are Thursday 15 December, Thursday 22 December and Friday 23 December. There are wonderful gift shops, boutiques, and quality food stores so whether you are shopping for presents, for your wardrobe or for the dining table, they will have something for you.
And while you’re there, why not make the most of the experience? Catch up with friends for a coffee, book yourself a beauty or hair treatment, and browse the shops with yourself in mind. The shops are full of this summer’s gorgeous rich, bright colours and floral designs. The emphasis is on the feminine and on letting your inner fashionista shine through with contrasting patterns being the season’s top trend. They all combine stunningly with the hot, new metallic look featuring strongly in shoes, bags and clothing. And if the gift you bought for someone else doesn’t find its way under the tree on Christmas Eve after all? Well, don’t you deserve a treat too?

PACIFIC RADIOLOGY
LANDS AT WIGRAM It is difficult to overstate how fundamental good health is to living life to its full potential. Right at the heart of helping Cantabrians to protect their wellbeing is Pacific Radiology Wigram. Branch manager, Kathy Matheson, and her team deliver world-class radiology to help people in Wigram as well as local communities lead healthier lives.
T
he branch is the first of the former Christchurch Radiology Group to be rebranded as part of the larger Pacific Radiology. The facility has quickly established itself as the medical imaging provider of choice
in Christchurch’s south-west. Patient numbers have doubled since the opening in early July. The dedicated and highly experienced team includes familiar faces from the former Cashmere Radiology. The practice is a purpose built, state of the art facility, which offers a range of medical imaging. Services include abdominal, musculoskeletal, gynaecological, pregnancy and vascular ultrasound, x-ray and mammography. Patients are referred by their GP, midwife, specialist or physiotherapist. Pacific Radiology works with these professional partners to ensure patients receive the best possible care. Medical imaging is an important part of the patient’s journey. Pacific Radiology offers the collective knowledge and experience of nationally and internationally recognised Radiologists and Sonographers to help patients on that journey. An ‘Anytime Service’ performs medical reporting around the clock to ensure prompt delivery of diagnosis to emergency services and referrers. This assures patients an efficient and seamless transition between care providers. Pacific Radiology Wigram is conveniently located for those residing in the southern Christchurch suburbs and Selwyn District. The branch is housed within Wigram Health which also offers a GP surgery and physiotherapist. The healthcare centre is a part of the greater business and shopping complex The Landing, which has dining, retail, haircare and childcare, offering added convenience to the experience. Kathy Matheson says, “People have been really excited about the fact their healthcare is all in one spot. They have been very impressed with the surroundings, service and they really love the new building”. Pacific Radiology’s philosophy of delivering world class radiology locally is something Kathy says Wigram epitomises with its modern and comfortable new premises and highly trained team of patient focused staff. You can contact Pacific Radiology Wigram on 03 379 0770.

A delicious dream
BECOMES A REALITY
A lucky family discovered their slice of paradise but sharing it, as an exquisite dining experience, is what they love most.
L
emongrass, a Thai restaurant in Loburn resides amongst grapes vines and hazelnut trees. The family took four years to build the restaurant attached to their homestead, using upcycled materials. Paul Reavill’s architectural and carpentry skills, with his wife Sriamorn’s culinary talent have created the dream. It’s a family effort, including the children Chelsy, 8, who now loves helping in the kitchen and Aaron, 10, who charms with gracious, knowledgeable customer service. “The children are just so proud - they always say ‘Mummy, I love our new restaurant. We did it!’” Sriamorn says. Food presentation is picturesque, and the flavours are an authentic dance of fresh, sweet, sour, piquant and salty - so quintessentially Thai. “It’s best shared as complementing plates in the middle of the table – to try a totally new experience.”
Sriamorn uses her garden’s herbs such as lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime, as well as fruit from their orchard, and neighbourhood produce. The coffee is single-origin Lamai from Thailand, roasted by Rangiora’s Coffee Worx. Sriamorn and her valued staff perfect every dish on the exciting menu such as the freshest-flavoured Thai beef salad, grilled marinated chicken with satay sauce, stickyglazed pork with kaffir lime and pineapple – and delectable brownies with chunks of hazelnuts often feature. A magical experience for special occasions and families, it’s also worth visiting any day. Lemongrass, 56 Fletchers Road, Loburn is now BYO and just minutes from Rangiora. Visit Facebook or phone 03 310 3102. Open 9am until late seven days a week. Reservations for dinner are essential.

Gone are the sticky, glittery or flavoured lipa.m. glosses of yesterday, 16/11/2016 9:16:48 which have been replaced by their casual-cool cousin. They’re hitting the bridal scene in every shade, from sheer to opaque, through to romantic soft pinks and corals for a welcome wash of colour. It’s a perfect pairing for naturallooking makeup. Matte brown eye shadows and liners are coming through strong, with the combo set to enhance the eyes without getting all ‘in-yourface’. Dewy skin is a hot look right now, with makeup artists using a pearly highlighter stick to achieve the glowy appearance.

olished Diamonds takes the guesswork out of finding the perfect ring while keeping the romance and excitement alive. Thanks to their CAD design system all you have to do is describe the ring of your dreams or bring in an image into their plush design studio and the team at Polished Diamonds will create an exact architectural image of your ring. They will use your finger size and metal choice to show you exactly how your ring will look in perfect proportions. The image will be kept on file until you drop the hint – then all your loved one needs to do is pop into the studio and select the diamond or gemstone which suits his budget. So, ladies take control and design the ring of your dreams but let him finish the design to his budget. There will still be the excitement of seeing your ring for the first time but you can both relax knowing you will love it – perfect.

ith the township built around the popular hot spring discovered in the late 19th century, Hanmer’s resident population of 1000 expands to upwards of 3000 in weekends and as many as 7000 during school holiday periods. The hot pools continue to draw half a million visitors a year, with as many as 5000 going through the pool complex in a single day at peak times. Of these, almost half are estimated to be visitors from outside Canterbury, whose tourist dollars fund the region’s accommodation and hospitality industry. So it’s a popular spot for those in tourism, farming and the increasing agri-tourism sectors. As a result, the town’s economy is strong, with 30 visitor attractions, 22 cafes and restaurants

MOËT ICE By Nicholas Henare
It has a style distinguished by its bright fruitiness, its seductive palate, and its elegant maturity. “Champagne on the rocks isn’t a new way to serve an old drink, but a new drink in its own right. Moët Ice is perfect served on ice and allows you to enjoy it with fresh simple garnishes.” The proper ritual when serving Moët Ice is to first pour the Champagne into a large cabernet-style glass, secondly add the ice (three large ice cubes) afterwards, otherwise it will foam and lose effervescence. If you are in Queenstown, check out Pier 19, 11 December, 19 February, and 26 February from 3 – 6pm to enjoy the Moët Ice summer session. A truly great way to experience Moët Ice don’t you think?

AN AUTHENTIC CULINARY
ADVENTURE
From humble beginnings operating a food caravan on the side of the road, to an award-winning restaurant with a franchise in six locations – Thai Chef’s Restaurant is an inspiring success story.
J
ust over 16 years ago, Chang immigrated to Napier from Bangkok and started a weekend business serving traditional Thai food from a caravan. Chang’s food was so delicious that he made a name for himself as the man who could attract a 2 kilometre-long queue of hungry customers. Chang’s loyal following encouraged him on his journey, and he now offers a refined dining experience of Royal Thai cuisine in Auckland, Napier, New Plymouth, Wellington and Whangarei – and has just opened his sixth restaurant, located on Riccarton Road. The franchise was awarded the Thai Select Premium from the Prime Minister of Thailand in 2013, and Thai ambassador Maris Sangiamopongsa attended the Christchurch grand opening last month. “We had always

dreamed of opening a restaurant here in the mainland,” Chang says. The stunning, spacious restaurant features traditional Thai décor throughout the main dining room and separate function rooms, the Sukhu Tiger Bar – with its own small dishes menu – as well as an additional lounge area with a pool table. The menu is full of beautiful, authentic dishes, which are also affordable, and taste “extraordinary”, Chang says. “We import our main ingredients from Thailand and our fresh produce is locally sourced. It’s a unique taste which is full of flavour – if it’s not to our highest standard we won’t serve it.” Takeaway and delivery options are also available, as well as vegan and glutenfree. Visit www.thaichef.co.nz for more information or phone 341 1163.
FROM TANK TO
TABLE
Wigram Brewing Company, a local industry icon, is entering a new era as it moves towards fulfilling its true potential and future-proofing this success.
T
he new site “is not just about more space for new kit, it’s also about a controlled expansion and restructuring for the future” says marketing co-ordinator Caroline McGurk. In short, the future looks bright for the highly awarded Christchurch craft beer brewery. Wigram’s small team is headed by General Manager Paul McGurk, brew master Paul “Coops” Cooper, brewer Joe Latimer and Di Livingstone who completes the team as sales support and admin, with a couple of casual staff. As part of its exciting evolution the business will extend its fillery. “Craft beer drinkers know their stuff,” Caroline says. “People are really embracing fresh is best, from tank to tap to table.” Up to 20 taps will be available at Wigrams Craft Beer Fillery in Sonter Road including its iconic new Jetpack Double IPA. A bottling line, to be installed next month will bring the whole process, from mashing to packaging, under one roof. “It’s a game changer,” Paul says. We agree – all that’s left is to watch this space with anticipation.
We have a winner... at Corianders!
A
s I write, I am feeling very excited for Tony Blackler and his wife for winning the Corianders Great Indian Adventure! Tony’s name was drawn from more than 18,000 entries in the recent competition to win a glorious holiday experience including flights for two to India, staying four nights at the famous Rambagh Palace in Jaipur! The winner was presented with his prize at a special function and former cricketers Ben and Chris Harris did the honours of unveiling the winner. Congratulations to the Blacklers. My experiences dining at the various Corianders restaurants in the Canterbury area could only be described as “winning experiences!” A special way to treat family and friends this Christmas would be a Corianders Gift Voucher which is certainly going to give them a memorable experience and is a fantastic way to celebrate the holiday season. Amar and the team at all the Corianders restaurants wish all their customers a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year, and sincerely thank you for your patronage throughout 2016.

CULINARY MAGIC ON MONTREAL
Grilled Hasselback Chilli Carrots By The Villas
Have you ever hasslebacked a carrot, or any other vegetable for that matter? It’s a simple technique where you take a single ingredient, such as the humble carrot in this case, and make a series of cuts along the vegetable so that you don’t cut all the way through. When the carrot is roasting, the cuts open up and make way for the oils and other toppings to creep into the cuts, leaving you with a delicious tasting and great looking side dish to serve on your Christmas table.
The Villas may be all kinds of pretty, and have charm, personality and sensational cuisine to boot, but it has very humble staff members who won’t brag about all the additional love customers will feel from the restaurant over summer. We will though!
O
n 27 January, The Villas will be hosting a five course Emerson’s Craft Beer Dinner with five Emerson’s craft beers. The dinner will be hosted by Richard Emerson himself and at only $95 per person this is a value rich experience that promises to enrich and engage. You’ll not get too many opportunities to dine with a brewing legend like Richard.
You’ll not get too many opportunities to dine with a brewing legend like Richard Emerson. Head chef Jeremy and his team will really be getting their creative juices flowing, creating dishes to match some fantastic new beers from the Emerson’s brewery. There might even be a spirit match to complement the food and beer as well. You never quite know what Richard will come up with. Space is limited so book up now. The Emerson’s crew will also have their Mini Bar in tow and will be serving some special brews in the courtyard from 5pm. No ticket required so just pop in and see what hoppy delights they have brought up for the beer festival this weekend. Indoor and alfresco, The Villas is synonymous with summer and fabulous socialising.
Ingredients • 5 large carrots, peeled and ends trimmed • 2 fresh red chillies (seeds removed for less heat if you prefer) • 3 roasted red peppers • 4 cloves garlic • 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper • Extra virgin olive oil, plus more for carrots • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • ½ teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for seasoning • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more for seasoning Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line an oven tray with baking paper. 2. Simmer carrots for 10 minutes, until softened. Transfer to a chopping board to cool. 3. For the sauce, in a blender, pulse the fresh chillies, red
peppers, garlic, crushed red pepper, ⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper until smooth. 4. Place carrots on chopping board with a wooden spoon on either side. Make cuts ¼ inch apart, and as far down as the wooden spoons will allow. 5. Drizzle carrots generously with extra virgin olive oil and salt and pepper. 6. Roast carrots at 375°F for 20 minutes. Brush with more extra virgin olive oil and generously spoon sauce over carrots. Roast 20 minutes more, or until carrots are crispy and brown. 7. This is a great looking (and tasty) side for the Christmas table or serve carrots with your choice of meats, fish, or vegetable dishes any time.
Try something new.

eplacing Monkey Spices Ltd, a popular Italian restaurant of nine years, owners Chie and Taka decided it was time for a change. Returning to their home country of Japan’s cuisine, the couple say while the Italian restaurant was wellloved, their new venture has garnered much excitement and positive feedback amongst the community. Chie and Taka run Teppan Yaki Flame with co-owner Hiro, a well-known and
highly experienced Japanese chef – formerly of Sala Sala and Sakura. “We felt it was time to move on and try something new,” says Chie. “Hiro has many years of experience as a top chef here in New Zealand and overseas. He is very creative, talented and passionate about food – we are very happy to have the opportunity to work with him.” Traditional Teppan Yaki is cooked in front of customers, creating an exciting
atmosphere along with the delicious food and flavours, Chie says. “Hiro is a very good entertainer as well.” The menu features a range of authentic Japanese fare as well as Japanese-fusion options, such as Izakaya – small, tapas-style dishes – ideal for foodies who love to try new things. “The presentation is amazing, it’s also about eating with your eyes. And we put a lot of effort into looking after our customers with service that Japanese people are well-known for – ‘omotenashi’ – which means high-quality hospitality.” Customers can BYO wine, and a range of Japanese beer and Sake are available. Located at Rolleston Square, phone 347 7444. Mobile Teppan Yaki catering is also available for birthdays and small functions.

THE JOY OF
LEARNING By Kate Pierson
I’m the first to concede I don’t have the same culinary prowess flowing through my veins in the way other family member’s seem to have it in their DNA.
W
hile I most certainly have a spoilt palate, I’m not a natural in the kitchen. Needless to say, I was rather bashful as I arrived at my first Asian Garden Cooking Class. My worries were unfounded, however, as I was immediately welcomed like family by my fellow classmates and our attentive tutors. There would be few superlatives that could describe what a profoundly enjoyable experience it was. At the beginning of the four hour class, we were welcomed into the state-of-the-art kitchen space, adjoining a
beautiful preparation/dining area. A table awaited us, dressed to the nines with a floral arrangement and our very own branded aprons. We donned our name badges, quickly became acquainted with the group, sharing our aspirations for the class, and were given an overview of the mouthwatering menu: pork balls, black pepper beef, chicken pad Thai, red Thai prawn curry and chicken larb. Our highly-experienced chefs of the world then led us out into the stunning
on-site garden where we were given the chance to smell and taste some of the delicious herbs that would be used in our dishes – Vietnamese mint, lemongrass, lime leaf – my tongue and my hands were grateful beneficiaries of the fragrant and super fresh products. On return to the preparation area, we were each given our own work station where we were guided through every step of every recipe. Thorough, engaging and educational instruction from our tutors was punctuated by lots of laughter, excellent camaraderie and banter between group members and plenty of Q+A. The first two hours were concentrated on prep – I was particularly thrilled to learn how to use a knife with ease and skill – something that had previously evaded me. I also relished in the opportunity to learn about each of the ingredients and the role they played in the overall flavour. Hour three found us at the coalface with the opportunity to turn our hand at mastering the woks in the kitchen. Our hard work (although you could hardly call it that!) was rewarded throughout with samples and ice cold orange juice. A sit down meal with all the class members was the culmination of a wonderful experience. Would I visit the school again? In a heartbeat. MER FOR SUM Hydrating foods
By Melinda Collins
Eight glasses of water a day is the proverbial path to good health, but it’s not always easy.
W
ith roughly 20 percent of our daily H2O intake coming from solid foods, why not quench your thirst with these hugely hydrating foods? With the highest water content of any solid food, cucumber makes a great summertime snack; pop it in a salad or serve it up with some hummus. Although its darker green rellies trump iceberg lettuce in the nutrition stakes, it’s a different story when it comes to water content with this crispy vege a great addition to sandwiches or as a bed for a protein-rich chicken salad. Iceberg lettuce may have higher water content, but raw spinach on your sandwich or salad provides nearly as much built-in hydration, with an added nutritional punch. They’re the juicy red mainstay of salads, sauces and sandwiches, but tomatoes’ tasty siblings – sweet cherry and grape varieties – also make an excellent hydrating snack. Although the old wives’ tale about celery containing negative calories is just that – it’s not far wrong. Like all high-water content foods, celery has very few calories and the powerful medley of fibre and water helps to fill you up.
Like the name suggests, watermelon is full of water. But this magical melon is also among the richest sources of the cancer-fighting antioxidant lycopene. In addition to lots of water, cauliflower’s unassuming florets are packed with a nutritional punch that offers the ability to help lower cholesterol and fight cancer. Like its cousin cauliflower, broccoli adds a delicious crunch to a salad and is also up there in the water-content and nutritional stakes. Bell peppers of all shades have high-water content, but the green varieties lead the pack and, although all berries are good foods for hydration, juicy red strawberries are easily the best of the bunch with 91 percent water content.
Wishing everyone a Merry xmas & happy & safe 2017

DOWN BY THE
LIFFEY GALLERY By Céline Gibson
h a p p y 5 t h b i r t h d ay !
On 6 December, Down by the Liffey Gallery celebrated an opening night of one of their monthly exhibitions, but more importantly, they celebrated five years of being.
JustineDeSpa
The gallery has around 135 members - some local, some from the city and some from beyond.
The community gallery is housed in the former Coronation Library, built in 1911. “It’s a good space for exhibitions,” says Jim Conolly, Gallery Chairman, “not too big, and not too small”. The gallery has around 135 members some local, some from the city and some from beyond. It tries to have examples of different forms of art in any one exhibition; for example, two painters displaying alongside 3D artists such as a potter or sculptor. Jim shows a copper sculpture of a small bird perched daintily on the fretwork
branches of her nest; her nest is a burnished copper bowl. It’s an exquisite piece. Once a year, as part of its Community Month, the Gallery exhibits pre-schools, primary schools and high school art. In 2012, Down By The Liffey Gallery was awarded the Sensational Art Award by the Selwyn Arts Council, of which Jim and wife Francie are very proud. They both make special mention of their volunteers. “We couldn’t have done it without them. They’re integral to our success.” The volunteers host the Gallery Wednesdays to Sundays from 10am to 4pm. Jim mentions an entry in the visitor’s book. “It said, ‘Thank you for bringing art to Lincoln’. That’s why we do this.” Info: www.downbytheliffeygallery.com

KITCHEN INSPIRATION
COMES TO LIFE
When it’s time to update your kitchen there are really only two choices - install new or remodel the old. Adrian and Tammy Kay and the team at Dream Doors Christchurch are geniuses at facilitating both.
A Before
After
n outdated or poorly designed or constructed kitchen makes life difficult and devalues a house. Adrian and the team specialise in everything from a small kitchen facelift to a brand new kitchen installation, all the while working closely with clients to do as little or as much as they need and within their budget. The company employs qualified installers and the kitchens are made right here in Christchurch using quality New Zealand materials. The project is managed by Adrian, from a free measure and quote consultation, right through to installation completion. A wide range of quality products are then sourced as necessary. These could be brand new appliances,
spectacular door finishes, to formica, engineered stone or granite bench tops. Then it’s just a matter of choosing from a broad selection of colours, sinks, splashbacks and even handles to make it truly your kitchen. Check out some before and after photos of what can be achieved on the Dream Doors Christchurch Facebook page. There is also a Christmas promotion running. Book your new kitchen before 24 December and receive a two hundred dollar Countdown voucher. Some conditions apply. Contact Dream Doors Christchurch for details, phone 338 1081.

MAT-ERIAL VALUE
BLOOM & CO INTERIORS
By Kate Pierson
Quality is Everything.
Rugs, carpets, mats – whatever lingo you like to don to describe these accents for your home, the outcome is the same if the right decision is made.
A
beautiful mat for the abode has the ability to transform a space, hide a multitude of sins on weathered floor or carpet, introduce texture and add a pop of colour. Seemingly the favourite look at present is a down-to-earth jute rug, or a comparable handwoven beauty in cotton, seagrass, hemp or coir. Jute hails from giant corchorus plants grown in beautiful Bangladesh and seagrass is harvested from the sprawling paddy fields and riverbanks of the culturally rich destinations of Vietnam and China. The earthy tones of a jute rug work synergistically with all kinds of décor, introducing a minimalist aesthetic that enhances but doesn’t compete. Explore Pinterest for inspiration and discover many opportunities to introduce mat-erial value into your space.

Relax
YOUR WAY
Are you waking up tired? Try an adjustable bed for the ultimate relaxation. With an adjustable bed, you can relax your way. Position yourself upright for breakfast in bed, elevate your feet for a luxurious lounge, or put your head at just the right angle to read or watch a movie.
A
n adjustable bed can accommodate various sleeping preferences or health issues, and allows you to achieve a level of comfort you never thought possible.
Therapeutic benefits: Therapeutic inclination can be used to aid a variety of health concerns: • Poor circulation—often causing swelling in the legs and feet — can be alleviated by elevating your feet above your heart. • The Fowler’s position (a medical position where the upper body is elevated 45-60 degrees) can facilitate breathing and healing after some
surgeries and childbirth. • By elevating the chest and head, heart burn can be eliminated. • The “zero gravity” position—where the head is slightly raised and feet are above the heart — can be helpful in relieving back pain and improving circulation. • In addition to these specific positions, people can tailor the bed shape to fit their own personal needs and comfort preferences.
You deserve a rejuvenating, restful sleep every night, so have a go and see if an adjustable bed suits your lifestyle. Available from Harvey Norman, 26 furniture and bedding stores nationwide. Visit www.harveynorman.co.nz

OUR YEAR!
I’ve always tried to lead a deeply purposeful life (at least that’s what I tell myself) and December’s arrival usually gives me the opportunity to reflect on that purpose. I’ll question whether I’ve moved in the direction of my intentions, achieved the goals - lofty and simple - that I’ve set and look at where improvements can be made. As anyone juggling work, home, children, family, travel and life knows, it’s never easy and some years shine a little brighter than others. 2016 has been a huge year with an avalanche of professional and personal achievements dominating the calendar. As a home-grown business - company managers, consultants and large administration team - we’re proud of our professional performances; achieving the Number One Franchise in New Zealand for income per sales consultant, the Number

One Office in three groups, and the Number One Office in the world for income per sales consultant out of 800 Harcourts offices for the Papanui branch, in addition to having three of the top consultants in New Zealand and internationally. Even if this never happens again, and believe me it’s a difficult act to repeat, I’ll still enjoy the memory and the moment. We have also worked hard to support our communities, believing and understanding that a social conscience combined with generosity makes the lives of others better, and this year that has involved Women’s Refuge, Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust, an orphanage in Fiji, Cancer Society, and numerous local schools and causes. That’s just a small glimpse of the work portion of a life lived at full pace, alongside a personal space that has also been busy. So now it’s Christmas and I’m going to rest, get merry and think about my next ‘bookmark’!

Solid oak vanity units with mitred corners, curved internal doors and high gloss black lacquered kitchen cabinetry, tell the tale of Murray Hewitt Joinery’s work.
M
urray and the team at MHJ provided a full house of joinery for the new Waitikiri home, working with designer Trish Simpson, the builder, and the client themselves. “We started with the internal doors, stairs and handrails, and the highly lacquered front entry door, and as the job progressed we worked on the bathrooms, wardrobes and laundry. The kitchen joinery was timed in with the installation of stone bench tops,” Murray says. “And the
final piece was the black lacquered cabinet doors in the kitchen.” Vanities in the two full bathrooms and powder room were manufactured from solid oak, the mitred corners creating a thick and chunky look that was teamed up with black basins. Wardrobe joinery was constructed from white melamine, with the master bedroom’s walk-in robe including a lacquered exterior and Blum runners for a soft close function. Coloured melamine fronts featured in the laundry finished off with high pressure laminate (HPL) tops. As with many full house joinery projects the main component was in the kitchen. Internal joinery consisted of white melamine on Blum Antaro runners with soft close, and high gloss black lacquer cabinetry teamed with frosted glass fronts for higher spaces. Tucked in behind the kitchen was a scullery, with a sink and an array of storage areas, and coloured glass splashbacks in both areas. The expansive kitchen island was fronted with American White Oak slats and under bench LED lighting, with a wine fridge at one end. Precision Stone installed the Quartz Crystal Stella White stone top, chosen specifically to enable the use of one single piece for the 3200 centimetre long and 1400 centimetre wide island bench top. MHJ worked closely with a variety of subcontractors during the build, and the high gloss lacquer work as well as staining and pre-finishing of wooden componentry in the vanities and kitchen islands was completed by MF Turnbull Ltd at the client’s request. Murray has 25 years of experience in the industry, founding MHJ back in 1998 with wife Julie. Over the years they have built up a great team of dedicated joiners and cabinet makers, with Steve, Clayton, Craig, David and Chris, and project manager Daniel, following each job through from manufacture to installation. Members of both Master Joiners and the National Kitchen & Bathroom Association, they have the ability to work on a wide variety of projects. This can be the big to the small, from bespoke pieces of furniture to external doors and windows including double hung windows and framed interior doors, and commercial work such a recently completed bakery in Kaiapoi, as well as retail and office fit-outs. “We enjoy the challenge of making something work,” Murray says. For more information contact Murray Hewitt Joinery on 343 0360 or visit www.mhj.co.nz.
