Phil Collins ROCKS INTO TOWN

Global superstar Phil Collins will be rocking his way down under, early next year. The former Genesis singer and drummer has been making his way across the US and Europe as part of his Not Dead Yet: Live! Tour, presented by TEG Dainty.

O

ne of the most successful artists of the 1980s with more than 280 million records sold, the English soft-rocker will be playing at Christchurch Stadium (formerly AMI Stadium) for one night only on 4 February after attracting sell-out crowds across the UK and Europe. The highly-anticipated comeback tour Not Dead Yet: Live! began in the UK and Europe last June, with his five-night show at Royal Albert Hall in London selling out within 15 seconds. He also sold out all five arena shows in Germany and five arena shows in France, along with successfully headlining a 65,000-capacity show at Hyde Park. He was a somewhat reluctant frontman, after starting out as a drummer in the 1970s, but he took Genesis from a beloved rock group to one of the biggest bands in

the world. He made his smashing global solo debut with 1981’s Face Value and the album’s hit single In The Air Tonight, both of which topped the charts around the world and went multi-platinum in Australia. Multiple chart-topping hits followed, with seven Top 10 Australian singles, including You Can’t Hurry Love, Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now), One More Night, A Groovy Kind Of Love. “I thought I would retire quietly,” Phil says of his return to the spotlight. “But thanks to the fans, my family and support from some extraordinary artists I have rediscovered my passion for music and performing. It’s time to do it all again and I’m excited. It just feels right.” Securing the concert has been the result of a collaborative effort between ChristchurchNZ and Vbase, Vbase Board Chair, city councillor Tim Scandrett

says. “Christchurch is set to become the concert capital of the South Island as our entertainment venues come online and fill up with many more world-class national and international headline acts.” ChristchurchNZ General Manager of Destination and Attraction, Loren Heaphy says the global music legend is a significant feat for the city. “We’re stoked that Collins has chosen to play in Christchurch. We’re expecting a sell-out crowd of die-hard fans and our city will be pumping with local and national visitors,” she says. Phil’s backing band will feature long-time touring members, including guitarist Daryl Stuermer, keyboardist Brad Cole, bassist Leland Sklar and percussionist Luis Conte, along with a horn selection and backup vocalists. Phil’s 16-year old son, Nicholas, will round up the band on drums. Metropol September 13, 2018 9

is also providing funding to Christchurch Housing First to provide housing for the most vulnerable homeless. Christchurch City Missioner Matthew Mark says the new social workers will build relationships with those on the streets and connect them with the services and support they need to make positive changes in their lives. “It is going to make a big difference. The partnership with the council has created an opportunity for us and we’ve been able to do some targeted fundraising with some of our sponsors to cover the costs.” Matthew says it is important to address what is a growing social issue. “There’s a growing awareness and presentation of the homelessness problem in the public domain where it might have been hidden historically,” he says. “It is certainly a lot more visible now that what it was.” Council Head of Community Support and Governance John Filsell says funding the social outreach workers is a way for the council to work together with partners in the community. “We are committed to taking action on this issue and this is just one step in a suite of initiatives the working group is planning to implement.”

Integral to his role, he says, is connecting with these people in a meaningful way without judgment. “My work will be about providing the right connections, empowering our whanau with knowledge, enabling opportunities to find positive pathways forward.” George has worked for the City Mission in its night shelter for several years but he sees the new role as a chance to be out in the community as an invaluable extension to the work of the City Mission team. Funding for his role and another full-time social worker position has been provided by Christchurch City Council, with $70,000 from the Capital Endowment Fund, an amount which has been matched by the City Mission. The social outreach service is just one part of an action plan developed by a new multi-agency working group set up to tackle homelessness on city streets. The group, which meets each month, includes members from the council, the Central City Business Association, Christchurch Police and other social and housing agencies. It is chaired by Christchurch City Councillor Anne Galloway, who is also Chair of Safer Christchurch and council

Spring

AWAKENING The sunshine and emerging blossoms around the city confirm that spring is upon us and with it the property market once again begins to thrive. It is fair to say we have recently surfaced from a distinctive Winter market in the real estate industry. Many sellers have made the decision to refrain from listing their property in the colder months. For this reason we have experienced fewer homes for sale and as such have seen a multitude of buyers left searching for choice. Although it appears the old-style notion that property should come to the market in the sunny months may have crept back into the minds of sellers, it is not a new phenomenon, just one perhaps we have seen less in post-quake Christchurch. The truth remains the great majority of the properties that were listed over the last three months have sold, and they have sold in similar time periods as previous years. Undeniably Spring brings with it an influx of property to the market. So we are set to experience a revived number of buyers hunting for their dream home as they realise the slim Winter pickings are now replenished with fresh and exciting offerings. At Holmwood we have continued to experience outstanding success in our auction room delivering unconditional sales during the Winter months. The number of properties we have sold on ‘the fall of the hammer’ or prior to auction day, is an impressive 65% and of those left, the majority of them are sold within a matter of weeks. Regardless of what the processes are, real estate will always have people at its heart. At Holmwood we never forget that buying and selling property is a huge life decision and we are always committed to achieving outstanding results for our clients. If you are thinking of making a real estate decision then do not hesitate to contact one of our dedicated sales consultants today. For more information please contact:

Top Ten Tips

TO GET YOUR HOME READY FOR SALE

1 2 3 4 5

STREETSIDE APPEAL First impressions count. Lawns need to be mowed, paths should be clear, gardens weeded and trimmed. A coat of paint on your front fence and door, along with new numbers on the mailbox won’t go unnoticed.

DO THAT DIY Finish all the little odd jobs that need doing around the house. People notice, and it is off-putting because they are seeing work, not their new home. They may also overestimate how much it will cost to fix.

MAKE EACH ROOM COUNT When buying we tend to buy by the number of rooms. Make each room count by giving each room a purpose or use so that your viewers can see how they could use it.

DECLUTTER You may have the greatest space in the world, but clutter is only going to obscure it and make the rooms look smaller. Consider hiring a storage unit to house all those objects that don’t have a place in your home. Think of it as a head start on packing up your home.

DEPERSONALISE This really goes hand in hand with decluttering and cleaning. Don’t distract the viewer with all of your bits and pieces. Photos and wall hangings will end up distracting the viewer, they will concentrate on looking at things that tell them about you and not the house.

6 7 8 9 10

CLEAN The entire interior should be sparkling, including bench tops, walls, cupboards and ceilings – especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Consider getting your carpets, rugs and furniture steam cleaned.

STAGE YOUR HOME It’s always a good idea to know who your potential buyer is likely to be so that you can dress the home in a way that appeals to them. You can either do this yourself or hire a staging company. Your salesperson can provide you with advice and information on this.

FURNITURE PLACEMENT You want to make a room feel larger, furniture placement is a key element that affects this. People normally scan a room from left to right. If you place the tallest piece of furniture in the far left corner of a room, the room will appear larger.

BEDS Make sure you have a few extra pillows, cushions and at least one throw. Beds are a good way to pick up colour in a room, so try to match colours with a piece of art.

LIGHT = SPACE Get as much light into your home as possible. Pull back the curtains and open some windows. Increase the wattage in bulbs to brighten areas that would benefit from more light such as hallways and bathrooms.

“New Zealand’s current mental health crisis can’t continue”

“Walking was our form of therapy while waiting to be seen,” Jessica says. “So the idea of walking to Wellington was always a goal within arm’s reach.” Jessica devised a funding strategy and approached a number of businesses; their response was immediate and generous. Jessica then knew that this venture was possible. Her sponsors include: BMW, Gooses, Thule, Macpac, St John Ambulance, Sports Med, Foodstuffs, Lululemon, RD1, Protranz, Evo Cycles and Stand. Jessica will open a Givealittle page before she departs for Wellington and all proceeds will go to Stand, a nationwide Children’s Service who are actively helping children throughout New Zealand. “Representatives of Stand will meet us at the Wellington ferry terminal, then together we’ll walk the 2.5 kilometres to Parliament,” she says. “I want my statement to be loud and clear; New Zealand’s current mental health crisis can’t continue. We must all pitch in together to help. We all have, or know, someone with a mental health illness, so I’m not just representing my family, I’m representing all of New Zealand.” For more information, visit www.facebook.com/walkwithmenz.

mental illness when a member of her family became seriously unwell; she took on the battle of her life to avoid seeing her loved one become yet another New Zealand statistic. “I know there’s a mental health crisis in our country. I’ve experienced it first-hand. I’ve been through countless phone calls where I have begged for help, and all I got was waiting list referrals. Desperate people don’t need help in three, six or nine months time – the usual current waiting list period. They need it now.” Jessica says there are young people dying because they are not able to access the help they need at the most crucial time. “Our family has been through a lot and I’m passionate that other families shouldn’t have to experience what we have. Kids who are suffering can’t afford to wait. I want local government and Parliament to wake up to the crisis and take responsibility, now – before it’s too late; what New Zealand needs, more than ever, is more resources, more staff, and more funding into in-patient and outpatient facilities.” It was walking the Rapaki track that gave courage, strength and perspective to the family when faced with the harsh reality of mental illness.

Pavingw We need women at all levels, including the top, to change the dynamic, reshape the conversation, to make sure women’s voices are heard and heeded, not overlooked and ignored,” Sheryl Sandberg. Helen Clark has paved the way for women in leadership roles here in New Zealand, since becoming the first woman to be elected as its Prime Minister, following the 1999 election; the second woman in the country to take on the role. In April 2009, she then became the first woman to assume the role of Administrator of the United Nations Development Program, a position she held for a full two terms – eight years – before standing down in April 2017. As we celebrate 125 years of New Zealand’s worldleading suffrage movement, Metropol talks to one of our early female leaders, one who continues to be a strong voice for gender equality and women’s leadership.

What attracted you to politics? I got involved because I wanted to play a role in designing and implementing public policies in areas about which I was passionate – from working to secure opportunity and security for all New Zealanders to advocacy for an independent and principled foreign policy. How did your previous experiences or personal attributes set you up for a leadership role? I began at the bottom of the ladder in the political system as an activist in local body and general election campaigns. Over time I took on progressively higher levels of responsibility, including on the New Zealand Executive of the Labour Party, culminating in my being elected as Leader of the Labour Party and thereby becoming Leader of the Opposition. That made me a candidate for the job of Prime Minister. You will forever be in New Zealand history as one of our early female leaders. How does it feel to be a role model for women in leadership roles? As a result of New Zealand having had three women Prime Ministers, girls and young women now have role models of top female leadership. I am proud to be one of those role models. Who have been some of your biggest role models, women or otherwise? The first and most important role model was my mother who was a teacher, and also an aunt who was a teacher. Impressive women teachers throughout my education

16 September 13, 2018 Metropol

were influential in my intellectual development. Professor Robert Chapman at Auckland University also was very helpful in supporting my career development.

Chief Operating Officer of Facebook Sheryl Sandberg once said, ‘One day there won’t be female leaders, there will just be leaders’, capturing the sentiment that one day we do hope to achieve equality. How important are women leaders across all fields? We can only say “there will just be leaders” when we achieve gender parity across all fields. That is far from the case currently. Where women don’t get the chance to sit in a critical mass at decision-making tables, women’s needs and perspectives are underrepresented. It’s vital to change that. How do we, as a country, encourage more women to enter leadership roles? By continually reinforcing the importance of gender equality and girls and young women being able to aspire to be anything they want to be. No door should be closed to women. Where would you like to see New Zealand in 10/20/30 years with regards to women’s rights, equality and women in leadership? By 2030 – or before, New Zealand should aim to reach gender parity in Parliament. 2030 is the date for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and, with the good will of political parties, gender parity among MPs could be reached by then. As well, we could by 2030 eliminate the remaining gender pay gap, and aim to reduce the level of domestic and family violence enormously.

Why do you think New Zealand has been such a world leader in terms of women’s rights? We are a small, open, and relatively tolerant society with a sense of fair play. We are not hidebound by tradition. In my opinion, this enables us to embrace social change more readily. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? I am deluged with invitations from around the world to contribute to major events and advocate for good causes. That keeps me busy 24/7!

Sensing the Supernatural By Melinda Collins

He’s best known for his role as a psychic crime solver in Sensing Murder, acting as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. Now Kelvin Cruickshank is putting his psychic strength into solving murder mysteries in the United States. But as he tells Metropol ahead of his Soul Food Tour to our southern city in October, helping people through their grief is a key driving force behind what he does.

18 September 13, 2018 Metropol

You’re heading to Christchurch on 3 October as part of your Soul Food Tour. What’s the core concept behind these shows and how important are they to you? The core concept for my shows is to share the love of the spirit, to teach my guests how to understand their spiritual experiences and to show that our loved ones still live even after death. What have been some of the most powerful experiences you’ve had throughout this journey? I feel every experience I have with the spirit world is amazing. Reading clients is always a pleasure. Working on murder cases like I have been in the USA has been challenging and dangerous, yet I just love it. And teaching people how to understand it is a passion. But the best thing is seeing with my own eyes the pain leave people after a connection has been made… truly an amazing feeling! You’ve been doing this for many years now, has time in any way diminished the power of what you do in your mind? You’re right, I have been doing this for years and to be honest time has only made me better at connecting. The skills are sharper I’d say. You’ve recently had an incredibly powerful experience when you were able to help locate the body of missing man, Raymond ‘Curly’ Stirling. How do you describe that experience? Finding Raymond was truly the highlight of my career. His daughter in law and son trusted me enough and they listened to what Raymond had shared and simply went out and found him. Personally I was and still am so happy

for their family to have had their dad returned and laid to rest. I thank Glen and Jo for listening and following the instructions to the letter. They stuck to it and found him. A bitter sweet experience for sure but a truly amazing one too. Do you think everybody has some degree of psychic ability that hasn’t been recognised? I believe if we can dream we can all connect. Yes everyone has the intuition they just don’t either understand or don’t want to understand it. We all have gifts of some kind so for me it’s about tapping into it should one choose too. A big part of your career has been involved in delving into unsolved crime. How has this affected you emotionally and how do you keep yourself grounded through that process? Crime work, well that’s another thing all together. For the past 2.5 yrs I’ve been working with detectives and an amazing team of specialists in LA, USA. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions and incredibly draining, not to mention the physical dangers involved. But we get results and that’s the most important thing. I have bodyguards when at work in the States, which I appreciate because they keep me safe and I’m often meditating to find inner peace as the cases are really tough. What have you got in store for the next 12 months? Next 12 months I’ll be heading back to the States and possibly back to Japan, as I have been lecturing there this year. But the most exciting thing I’m looking forward to is my NZ tour with TJ Higgs from the UK. We will be working together side by side on stage. The tour kicks off July 2019 so I’m super excited to be able to bring TJ here to NZ. She’s an amazing medium who also worked with Colin Fry and was a personal friend to him. I met TJ in Japan and we just clicked, so the tour will be awesome. I can’t wait. I’m sure things will pop up as the year progresses and that no matter what and where I end up, spirit will be right at my side sharing their stories to help heal and inspire those they have left behind.

Kelvin will be presenting his Soul Food Tour Wednesday 3 October. For more information, visit kelvincruickshank.com/soul-food/.

Promenade in Pink! By Céline Gibson

Should you see a sea of pink moving through North Hagley Park the evening of 10 November, you’re not hallucinating; you’re witnessing the wonderful walkers of the 2018 Breast Cancer Foundation NZ Pink Star Walk.

T

he annual Breast Cancer Foundation NZ (BCFNZ) fundraiser is a walk for everybody

(no age restriction); it’s noncompetitive, there’s no training required and the course must be walked, not run.

designed for breast cancer survivors and supporters. The 2017 Pink Star Walks in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland attracted over 3,000 registered walkers. The goal for the 2018 event is 4,000 walkers (1,000 in Christchurch), with the target of $500,000 reached for the breast cancer cause. In New Zealand, more than 3,300 women a year are diagnosed with breast cancer – that’s 9 women per day. More than 600 women will lose their lives to it this year – that equates to around the size of a large primary school; and around 350 women under 45 years old (when free mammograms start) will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year – that’s one woman per day. With sobering statistics such as these, let’s all flock to Hagley Park and walk for love. Let the promenade in pink begin! Held on Saturday 10 November, there is a choice of a 5km or 10km walk. Arrive 4:15pm for a 5pm start. Route starts at North Hagley Park – The Entertainment Triangle. Walkers can register at www.pinkstarwalk.co.nz or, for more information about the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, visit www.breastcancer.org.nz.

What is required however, is a joyous heart, an imaginative and enthusiastic embrace of flaunting the colour pink and a good pair of walking shoes. It’s a walk of fun and celebration, but most importantly it’s a ‘Walk for the ones you love.’ For any groups wishing to show their support and coordinate team costumes, register for the event now and start planning your pink ensemble. The Hits radio presenters, Stacey and Flynny, are to MC the walk. In the run up to the event, Hits listeners will be encouraged to join either Team Stace or Team Flynny and put in some serious fundraising for their team. Evangelia Henderson, chief executive at Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, says the Pink Star Walks are a great way to show support for friends, family or colleagues affected by breast cancer. “Money raised will help us achieve our vision of zero deaths from breast cancer by pushing for new frontiers in early detection, treatment and support.” New Zealand’s first Pink Star Walk began in Auckland in 2006; Wellington and Christchurch had their first walks in 2015. The major sponsor is Estee Lauder Companies with media partner The Hits radio supporting Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s aim to provide a nationwide walking event

Cantabrians celebrate 70 million reasons to keep coming back to Total Realty While other real estate companies are still charging their clients up to 4% of the sale price of their property, Total Realty has been successfully selling homes for 10 years at their commission rate of 1%. This has equated to over $70 million in savings* for Cantabrians who are understandably singing their praises. We decided to chat with some of their clients to better understand why so many are making the leap to a more affordable and arguably better real estate service. Amy and Steve Silcock, Senior Leaders at Revolution Church and parents to three children, aged 12, 10 and 7 are one of many who keep coming back to Total Realty. We asked them about their experiences: “Steve and I have listed, sold and bought properties through Total Realty. We have dealt with Russell Hume and Matt Hurd. Both were amazing to deal with! Both were professional, knowledgeable, great at communicating, nothing was ever a problem. We have a busy family lifestyle and open homes were timed to t in with our Amy & Steve Silcock needs. Saving so much money with their low commission rate has made a huge difference to our family too! We always recommend Total Realty without hesitation! “ Amy & Steve Silcock

“I met Mary-Ann when she was a customer of mine. She was the rst person I thought of when the time came to sell my home. She is such a warm, genuine and honest lady I felt I could completely trust her to get the price I wanted and sold in the time I wanted. Mary-Ann is very professional and a pleasure to deal with. I felt very safe in her hands and the whole experience has been great. Very fast easy sale and great price.” J Cramond

“Marc and Wendy have made selling my property so easy and I’m thrilled with the sale price. They gave me great advice and were very thorough to set it all up ready to market which meant everything went smoothly for both me and the buyers, I’m happily recommending them to everyone I know who’s thinking of selling.” Valerie Weir “We have now bought and sold 15 residential properties through the fty years of our married life. All these except the last have been through high prole, high cost real estate agents. Greg handled the last one for us and was equal to or better than any of the previous high prole agents we have used and we saved over eight thousand dollars compared to the commission and other costs quoted to us by the other agent who appraised it (whose recommended selling price was ten thousand dollars less incidentally.)”

Margaret & Philip Walton “We were initially drawn to Total Realty because of the 1% fees, but when we met with Wayne we were very impressed with his honesty. He gave us some great advice on our property and we sold on the rst week after the open home for the price we were hoping for. Can’t ask for better service than that!”

E & J Lalanci “Choosing the right agent makes a huge difference to the total experience and I can wholeheartedly recommend Alison and Mike. A sale was achieved very quickly and negotiations were concluded with integrity and skill. The sale result was both above, and within parameters of more expensive agencies. The difference in my experience with Alison and Mike was less expense; less stress; and effective and successful negotiations completed within a week. They have restored my faith in the real estate business.”

A new initiative announced by the Christchurch Foundation – the Thinker in Residence programme – is bringing global ‘thinkers’ to the city, to challenge Christchurch’s thinking, keep us moving forward and be aspirational. Hila Oren is the first Thinker in Residence. Chief Executive of the Tel Aviv Foundation, Hila’s focus is responsible for elevating Tel Aviv’s standing as a global city and centre of innovation. Metropol talks to Hila about how Christchurch can benefit from emulating the global cities concept.

What are some of the key ways in which cities can think globally? Cities need to engage with the world in a global way. They need to be connected and open to the world and what it offers. Particularly for a city like Christchurch, which is geographically distant, it needs to be accessible in other ways: online and through information-sharing. Cities need to lean into the global network and seek to be part of it by being accessible, attractive (in terms of prices, regulation, and your brand) and using global tools and networks. For example, the Tel Aviv Foundation is facilitating an important link between the City of Tel Aviv-Yafo and global bodies and initiatives like UN-Habitat, the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities programme and the Bernard van Leer Foundation’s Urban95 program. It is also important that you retain your local identity even while integrating globally. How do successful smart cities look and how important is the role of residents in this development? Residents are number one. Smart cities need to listen to their residents first and foremost. Technology and infrastructure solutions come afterwards. The essential elements include understanding residents’ needs, collaboration and stakeholder management. A smart city looks clean, efficient, accessible, beautiful and full – full of people, business, culture, vibrancy. It’s a live organism that feeds our curiosity. Why are you so passionate about cities? Cities are like playgrounds – they are fun! There is so much to explore and uncover on every street and laneway and neighbourhood. And the experience can change throughout the day: a city feels different in the morning, afternoon and evening. A city is also like a house to its residents. The city square is like the lounge room, the neighbourhoods represent different rooms, etc. A city can also be a place where people feel a sense of belonging. People naturally seek community and to relate to one another; a city helps to facilitate that. I know that for many Tel Avivians, their city is part of their identity. Cities are the best place to live. I love being able to play a role at the Tel Aviv Foundation, and around the world, as a city-maker, continuing to make them so. Metropol September 13, 2018 23

Creating global cities

What opportunities are ripe for Christchurch if we are to emulate the trend of global cities? Although Christchurch is not a financial capital, it is a very attractive destination for innovative business and tourism and quality of life. I was also struck by the city’s “explorer” vibe which is very special. International students and academia as well as tourists present significant opportunities. It is the gateway to Antarctica and so much for the world to come learn, experience, touch, smell and explore. Christchurch is waiting for you.

he band’s single ‘Drift Away’, which comes from their new full-length album Vantage Point, has been the no. 1 most played song on New Zealand radio for four weeks running. It also topped the NZ Top 20 NZ Singles chart and has had close to 3 million streams on Spotify and 130,000 video views. The band, which consists of Rio, Sam, Joel, Matt, Ross and Caleb – first made its musical mark in 2009 with a self-titled debut album, soon finding success at home and abroad as a reggae group. Now after a five-year gap between albums, Rio Panapa says that the band has got better with age. “The things we write about today are deeper and more meaningful,” he says. “We were just teenagers writing about immature things. That’s naturally evolved. Now some of the boys have families and things, so everything we do has matured.” Now more “fearless”, the boys are comfortable with who they are and are not focused on fitting into the boxes that get them radio air time. “We’re a lot more comfortable with making music that we like now. “Vantage Point is a real aspirational album. It’s about going to bigger heights in our music. It’s a representation of where we see ourselves and where we want to be – which is at the top of a mountain looking at our success.”

owever, colour theorists and stylists might add a note of caution. First, make sure your colouring suits black and white. You might look ideal alongside soft offwhites or cream, but become very wan in the presence of whiter-than-white. Or you might once have suited black, but not these days, at least not near your face. Grey, silver and creamier-whites might be the flattering version. Trust the mirror’s take on it. Street style fashion shots plus current window displays are featuring black and white combos plus a single bright or a single pastel. If you want to wear your bright red and white patterned pants and white sneakers with a black-and-white striped shirt, go for it. Pattern clash equals sass – in a good way.

Black and white are the basis for a whole heap of great outcomes

Vive la contrast

Large prints (largely floral this season) featuring black and dusky pink, or black and turmeric are another current piece of sartorial goodness. There are exceedingly pretty options in the shops right now. If sticking to just black and white, why not do it in style with extravagant detailing like ruffle sleeves, a sequinned scene, or broderie anglaise milkmaid styling? Or introduce wow-factor with fancy footwear like a see-through or crystalencrusted heel. Try the outfit with a belt. Experiment with narrow and wide cinching, and vary your shoe height and style to alter the look comprehensively. More might be more, one day; less might be more, the next. Ring the changes, because black and white are the basis for a whole heap of great outcomes!

Your clothes at TAD (Merivale and Pegasus) look both classy and comfortable. Are those two features important? Definitely. If it’s comfortable you’re going to wear it. But it has to look good too. If you could buy for yourself just five items this season, what would those be? A pair of raw-edge denim shorts or skirt from LTB or One Teaspoon, a sleeved maxidress by Bird & Kite or Naudic, a Birds of a Feather vest or one from Alexander and fox, a strapless top, and a Naudic kimono. These pieces all work together, in different combinations. What’s needed more in every wardrobe…a little black dress, a little navy dress, or a little red dress? A little black dress. Will denim ever be dead? No. I don’t think so. I love it, and at present anything goes. Will drop-crotch pants still be a thing this time next year? They will be if they’re your thing. You either love or hate them. I love them.

We’ve gone through quite a few seasons of ankle-boot, cowboy-boot, and overthe-knee-boot popularity. If you were attending a summer wedding on an unseasonably cold day, what sort of boot would you pair with a floaty dress? It depends on the look I’m after. Probably a cowboy boot, but a dainty one for a dressywhimsical boho look. What’s your advice on dressing for your body-shape? If you try something on and love how you look…buy it and wear it! Don’t save it for a certain day. You want to feel amazing every day, even if you’re just at home! Does size matter, for dressing well? No. What matters is that you look in the mirror and smile. You should feel good about yourself every single day.

The range offered by Director Wendy Barker is extensive and includes herbal, yoga, aromatherapy, head, foot spa, four hands, back neck and shoulders, pregnancy, post-natal, baby and foot reflexology. Wendy says clients travel to Beauty Progress from all points of the compass, intent on enjoying the therapeutic benefits. Thai Massage is deep tissue, so it is especially beneficial to those of us with injuries, chained to the keyboard, or simply not as young as we used to be. Select the yoga stretch massage and you will find yourself in positions you did not believe possible! Of course, a Thai massage can be a purely hedonistic experience – couple’s Thai Massages are a treat for lovebirds, best friends, or mothers and daughters, and are always a special price at just $199 for a one-hour massage. You can add a specialised head and scalp massage or a reflexology massage for just $35. Wendy and the team love what they do. “It’s a lovely role to be in, people come in with pain or are just exhausted and after their massage we wave them on their way so happy and relaxed.” Find out more at www.beautyprogress.co.nz.

ormerly from Brighton, England, Traci has worked in the hair and beauty scene for more than 30 years and, although passionate about her work, has long had concerns about the chemical content and animal testing of many salon products. “Some of the laboratory animal testing was, and still is, little short of torture,” says Traci, “I thought there had to be another way.” When Earth Organics Hairdressing opened in November 2017, Traci’s dream was finally realised. The exquisite floral murals adorning her salon walls reflects Traci’s core philosophy that using natural, organic products are not only kinder to our hair, but also safeguard and benefit our overall health. “People with skin problems, cancer worries, or people who just want to look beautiful without resorting to toxic products of questionable origin, this is the salon for them. Our point of difference is that here you get the complete certified organic package – our gorgeous hair colours are 100 percent plant based, and the majority of our products are 100 percent vegan. None of our products are animal tested, and all packaging is 100 percent biodegradable and sustainable.” Open Tuesday to Saturday in the hip new hub of High Street, isn’t it time you treated your hair to a whole lotta love? Knowledge is power There’s a saying that knowledge is power and, when it comes to the physical nature of our bodies, this is certainly an accurate one.

ith its ability to see internal body structures such as tendons, muscles, joints, blood vessels, and internal organs, ultrasound technology is providing that knowledge across medical disciplines and we’re all the better for it. Peter Laws and his colleagues at Christchurch Vascular Group have recently launched a new vascular ultrasound service, with a recently appointed MRTB accredited vascular sonographer now able to offer a full range of vascular duplex investigations in the fully equipped vascular lab. Providing carotid duplex, deep vein thrombosis (including calf and abdominal deep veins if indicated), abdominal aortic aneurysm screening and surveillance, the team is also happy to discuss scan referrals for other vascular conditions. Alternatively, you can refer to its vascular surgeons for consultation. Clear, digitally produced reports will be made immediately available to you and answering any clinical questions is the top priority. Equipped with the latest ultrasound technology and fully accredited, expert staff, Christchurch Vascular can deliver the highest standard, evidence-based investigations. Advanced migraine treatments Debilitating and striking without warning, migraines and severe headaches not only prevent you from living a full life, there is also a sense of not being in control of your life. For the 13 percent of the population that are regular sufferers, migraine and headaches mean time off school or work, missed opportunities and difficulty in planning ahead. The powerful medications used to alleviate pain can have side effects, can cause rebound headaches and have to be taken at the right time to be effective.

I

n the past ten years however, the understanding of what causes headaches and migraines has significantly advanced. The research now shows that sensitisation of the brain stem is what causes this pain. “It is not widely known yet- that headache or migraine can be literally a pain in the neck,” says Laurie Moore, Director and Senior Physiotherapist at Muscle People Physiotherapy.

Advanced physiotherapy techniques can alleviate or remove pain altogether and techniques to use at home can be taught so that patients can find relief between treatments. Laurie, together with Senior Physiotherapists Clare and Naomi have trained in Australia in the ‘Watson Headache Approach’, a method of examining the small movements of the top three spinal segments. It is an internationally recognised approach for diagnostic accuracy and for reducing pain for headache and migraine conditions. It can reduce the amount of medication taken or remove the need for it altogether. The team returned to Australia recently to attend a symposium on the technique. “It reaffirmed the effectiveness of what we do and we honed our skills even more,” Laurie says. The approach at Muscle People does not involve manipulating or cracking the neck. Instead the appropriate spinal segments are gently stressed in a smooth, sustained manner. Patients generally come to the clinic four or five times in the first few weeks of treatment and they are shown some very

simple exercises to do at home. After the first few weeks, treatment sessions are guided by how the patient is feeling. By the time they get to the clinic for the first time, patients can be at their wits end but are really surprised at how quickly things can change for the better. Muscle People has three Christchurch locations: city, Bishopdale and Wigram Skies, and people travel from as far as Auckland and Invercargill to seek treatment. It also offers the full range

CONCUSSION Improve cognitive functions with hyperbaric treatment

Cognitive Health As our physical bodies age, so too do our minds, with many of us not feeling as mentally sharp in our older years. Thankfully, there is a significant body of research to suggest that you can help prevent cognitive decline with some very simple steps.

H

aving studied Neuroscience at Otago University in Dunedin, Martina van den Heuvel from Health on Hagley is highly knowledgeable about the simple steps that can be taken to keep people feeling mentally alert and, as with much of life, prevention is better than the cure. “It’s about helping people to grow old gracefully,” she says. One service available at Health on Hagley is the QRS system which generates Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields. Electromagnetic energy controls your chemistry. Disruption of this energy in cells causes impaired cell metabolism and, if our cells are not healthy, our bodies are not healthy. The QRS system is widely used to improve circulation and cell metabolism. The benefits

have been demonstrated by many scientific, peer reviewed, studies. “A simple way to understand how these work is to think of them as re-charging our batteries,” Martina says. Cooking demonstrations are also an integral part of the Health on Hagley service. Based on the understanding of the positive effects a healthy fat and low carb diet can have on cognitive function, and with a focus on fostering a healthy gut microbiotica, Martina can demonstrate ways of eating to assist in overall nutritional health. Services can also aid those who have had concussions, often a long time after the accident. Cognitive testing is available, along with Mild Hyperbaric Therapy. bowel cancer risk Reducing

When it comes to cancer, it’s easy to take a somewhat fatalistic view – you’re either going to get it or you’re not, right? However, not only is bowel cancer (commonly known as colon or colorectal cancer) highly curable if detected in its early stages, but there are steps which can be taken to reduce your risk of developing it at all.

M

etropol talks to endoscopy specialist, Surgeon Ross Roberts from The Endoscopy Clinic about assessing and reducing your own risk of this all too common cancer.

Assess your risk Firstly it’s important for people to be aware of their own, individual risk of colon cancer. How we would quantify that risk is through family history and, in particular, the number of family members affected, how closely related the person/people are to you and the age of their onset. You may have an increased risk if you have had previous bowel conditions, such as polyps and if you have moved after treatment of other conditions, you may not have received medical follow-up. Suspicious symptoms You need to be aware of any symptoms of concern, such as rectal bleeding, any new disturbances or changes in bowel function and the sudden onset of bowel pain. Impact of lifestyle Lifestyle has a big impact on your risk of bowel cancer, including diet. The ideal diet is predominantly plantbased. While some meat is ok in small amounts, highly processed foods, particularly those that have added nitrates, do increase your risk. These include processed meats like salamis, hams and meats that have been cooked at high temperatures that we love here in New Zealand. We encourage a moderate intake of animal fat and lots of fresh foods, the

avoidance of obesity and smoking, a moderate intake of alcohol and regular exercise, so all the things your grandma will have recommended. While people have long recognised the benefits of a good diet for overall health, many aren’t aware that it can actually play an important role in preventing cancer, with a number of other benefits to heart and brain health. Early detection counts Medical research has confirmed that colonoscopy reduces colorectal cancer mortality. It reduces this through the early detection of cancer at its early stages and through the removal of pre-cancerous lesions from the bowel that can later lead to cancer. It’s advisable for anybody who has an increased risk for developing bowel cancer to discuss the possibility of screening with your GP. There is a planned national screening programme already active in New Zealand that relies on faecal immunochemical testing. According to the Ministry of Health website, international findings indicate that this screening programme has the potential to reduce deaths from colon cancer by at least 16-22 percent (after 8-10 years) in the population offered screening. We recommend visiting your GP to discuss further.

Bite Best

a

of the

Like the Bach Cello Suite No 1 performed by his favourite cellist Mischa Maisky, the dentures made by Richard Greenlees, maestro at Lovebite, are a masterwork of harmony with the face and the nuance of character of their fortunate wearers.

ach set is a work of art; you cannot guess the dentures are not teeth, as grown and worn by the owner during their lifetime. “The last thing you’d ever want is a generic denture that goes across in a straight line,” (think Jim Carey in The Mask). “It’s just so obvious,” Richard says. With his artist’s eye, Richard understands that our mouths and the natural teeth they hold are a representation of the person inside, whom he takes time to know before beginning to create. A fisherman client recently consulted with Richard: the set of dentures resulting from that collaboration had a tooth missing to retain the integrity of that client’s identity! Training at Otago University, in Christchurch and Wellington, Richard went on to study ceramics in Osaka, Japan. Mentors Jean and Peter Hyam were the catalyst to the young Richard, who went to work with the rich and famous in London from his Harley Street practice for 15 years and now works in New Zealand and internationally. Richard also makes caps, crowns and bridges. He loves doing what he does. “I can change people’s lives for the better – it’s a craft and an art and also a science.” When starting, Richard didn’t think

there would be a need for dentures today. However, far from being a sunset industry, Richard is seeing people place a higher value on their health and wellbeing. His clients range from young people who haven’t looked after their teeth, to Baby Boomers who have let their teeth go as they aged, to older people with reduced bone mass affecting their natural teeth. He works on a sliding fee scale for all the different options, ranging from entry level to the ‘Rolls Royce’ level of work. The first consultation is face to face and is $150. There is a myriad of materials he can work in: acrylic, light cured composite, gold and porcelain. Choosing materials is a shared process which blends the goals of the client with Richard’s 40 years of experience. His work takes time. “These are not like the dentures of old which could be churned out within the week.” Four, even five visits are required to create the dentures, “more if you have selected the top of the line work”, and the dentures themselves take four to six weeks to create. “It is an alchemy of materials making things work for a human body – it is a great thrill.” Find Richard at www.lovebite.com.

Out of the box fun

At face value, recreation has a somewhat physical connotation, which may conjure up images of winter triathlons or a crisp, icy swim. However, defined as a discretionary activity of leisure, recreation is about so much more than sport and Canterbury is lucky to have a wide range of out of the box options on its recreational doorstep. We’ve hunted out some of our favourites.

An art studio with a twist, Paint ‘n’ Sip is a clever concept that is about having a relaxing evening painting over a glass of wine and is a delicious option to fill in a cool spring evening.

Escape rooms are the latest feature on the recreational calendar, they’re a great option for company team building, a family outing or a somewhat unusual date night.

Trampoline arenas are an increasingly popular way to spend a day – for both children and the young at heart. There are a few places in the city, all with a flipping good time on offer.

Clip ‘n Climb revolutionised the indoor climbing scene when it hit the local scene in 2006. Offering options for children, through to experienced climbers, it’s a fun way to keep fit.

The Grape Debate By Keiran Bleach

There’s a battle brewing within the Central Otago wine industry, but it’s for a good cause. And there shouldn’t be any ‘sour grapes’ at the end of it.

ollowing the success of similar events in Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough, the Colliers International Grape Debate comes to Southern Lakes this month. Renowned for their lighthearted – yet competitive – atmosphere, the debates have raised $100,000 for various charities while tickling the funny bone of everyone in the room. The southern version pits Central Otago winemakers against viticulturalists to contest the moot ‘It’s the vineyard guys that deserve the credit, not the winemakers’. Organiser Bex Tacon is confident this Grape Debate will be as heated as ever, with an impressive lineup of industry experts accepting the challenge. Winemakers Dan Dineen (Maude Wines), Duncan Forsyth (Mount Edward) and Paul Pujol (Prophet’s Rock) go head to head with viticulturists Gary Crabbe (Precision Viticulture), Mike Winters (Tekano Estate) and Edwin Haycock (Amisfield). TV comedian Jeremy Corbett, of 7 Days and The Project, will adjudicate and Queenstown real estate agent Brendan Quill will lead a charity auction. Bex guarantees the audience will be in stitches. “Jeremy is so clever,” she says. “Afterwards people comment that they haven’t laughed so much in their lives.” Alexandra-based organisation Sticks ’n’ Stones, which works to combat youth bullying and depression, will benefit from the proceeds of the evening. Bex says she wanted the money to go back into the local community to help young people. Colliers International Grape Debate is on Friday 21 September at The Winehouse, Gibbston. Tickets available through Eventfinda or email rebecca@eventshb.co.nz.

L

Power of poetry By Keiran Bleach

It’s poetry, but not as we know it. Three Southern Lakes literary identities are taking great delight in turning the traditional concept of staid poetry readings on its head.

iz Breslin, Laura Williamson and Annabel Wilson are bringing their unique show, At the Drop of a Hat, to Queenstown. The talented trio met in Wanaka when Liz and Laura started open mic nights, called Poetic Justice Wanaka. Fast-forward 10 years and they all have published poetry collections and developed a reputation for quickwitted banter and a relaxed rapport when on stage together. Attending At the Drop of a Hat, guests choose a theme, topic or idea they’re interested in, write the word on a piece of paper and drop it into a hat. Once they take the stage, the poets pass the hat around audience members, who pull out a piece of paper and read out the word on it. With their different accents (Liz is from the UK, Laura from Canada and Annabel from New Zealand) and styles, the women then have to reflect each theme through poetry and performance. That means drawing on their extensive back catalogues of work or making something up on the spot. Liz, whose first poetry book made it on to NZ Listener’s Top 100, says they have to think laterally. “It’s poetry as you never had it in English class at school.” At the Drop of a Hat is on Tuesday 2 October at Queenstown’s Sherwood. Tickets available through Eventfinda or at the door.

Spring has sprung, and the Southern Lakes region has awoken from its winter slumber. What better way to mark the end of our seasonal hibernation – and make the most of longer, warmer days – than by attending the Contact Alexandra Blossom Festival.

F

irst held in 1957, it’s the longestrunning community event of its kind in New Zealand and heralds the arrival of spring in style. Event Manager Martin McPherson explains that the festival was born out of community spirit and recognition of the town’s special character. “It’s a very traditional and quite oldfashioned event,” he says. The highlight of celebrations is the Grand Procession down Alexandra’s main street, on Saturday 22 September. It features eight colourful, handcrafted floats decorated with paper flowers, with a ‘princess’ in all her regal finery atop each float. Friday night’s Mardi Gras includes a freestyle extreme motocross show followed by a fireworks extravaganza.

For kids, the weekend offers all the fun of a country fair: magicians, clowns, jugglers, balloon artistry, a ghost train and ferris wheel. There’s also a classic car show, a line-up of big-rig trucks, pipe bands, marching teams, wood-chopping displays and garden tours. Two bands, The Nukes and RED, take to the stage at Saturday in the Park, playing “songs perfect for taking your shoes off and dancing on the grass in the sunshine,” Martin says. He also promises that festivalgoers won’t go hungry or thirsty, with plenty of food, wine and craft beer on offer. Contact Alexandra Blossom Festival runs 21-23 September. For the full programme, visit blossom.co.nz.

Marking winter’s end

Bowl me over By Kayte John

From acai bowls to ramen bowls and even Buddha bowls, the food bowl trend continues to assert its place in many domestic kitchens, cafés and restaurants. In Christchurch, you will find many local eateries are creating food bowls, with ingredients from all around the world.

cai, a Brazilian-grown fruit with a rich, sweet taste has certainly helped popularise the food bowl trend. However, this trendy concept of eating has been around for many years. According to food historian, Rachel Laudan, the poke bowl, which originated in Hawaii, was first popularised in the 1970s. This delicious bowl of goodness contains a base of rice, topped with seasoned, raw fish and various types of vegetables and sauces. In a way, it is similar to a deconstructed sushi roll. Beautiful bowls also tie in to the gratification of the food. They say you eat with your eyes so it’s a bonus that eating from a bowl can bring a visual experience as the contents are colourful, full of flavour, and super photogenic, making them very Instagramable. Flavour and fashion apart, this healthy bowl trend also promotes the ‘feel good factor’ – making you feel good about your meal choice. It also has the convenience factor and the appeal that you can almost eat anything out of it. From noodles to dumplings, soups to salads, acai bowls to the more original bowl of porridge, all these meals are customisable, quick to prepare, wholesome and healthy. And, if made fresh, with a little creativity, they can also be packed with rich and bold flavours – and that’s what culinary dreams are made of.

SPRING FARE FINDING

At the beginning of this month, the Farmers Market Spring Festival launched all-new ‘market to table’ cooking demonstrations. Jax Hamilton introduced the first of these with her usual enthusiasm and flair from the kitchen verandah at Riccarton House.

T

he demonstrations will continue from 10-10:30am every Saturday during the warmer months, with chefs sharing culinary techniques and unique ways to utilise produce that can be purchased fresh right from the growers in the market. The recipes will then be available on the website. “I love Christchurch Farmers Market, it’s my local and I’m there most Saturdays to support my community and the produce passionately displayed,” Jax says.

“Being able to inspire the crowds this spring to create something simple, seasonal and delicious is exactly what I’m about. Food is a gift and what we eat needs to be produced with love.” Christchurch Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 9am-1pm on the grounds of the historic Riccarton House & Bush. For more details and the schedule of chefs, visit www.christchurchfarmersmarket.co.nz or email chchfarmersmarket@gmail.com. Jax shares one of her favourite recipes.

Method Mix together the puree, garlic, olive oil and tomato sauce. Add a little more oil if it’s a little thick. Set aside. Preheat oven to suggested packet temperature. If you have one, pop your pizza stone in too. Dust your bench and take your bases, divide the tomato sauce and spoon/spread all over. Top with salami, onion and capsicum. Rip the bocconcini into bite sized pieces and sprinkle over the top. Take half the feta, crumble in your fingers and sprinkle over the pizza, drizzle with a little more oil, season with plenty of black pepper and a little salt. When the oven is to temperature, pop in and bake until the cheese has melted and the crust is golden and gorgeous. Remove from the oven. Sprinkle over the rocket, remaining feta and garnish with labneh dressing and chopped herbs. Labneh Dressing 2 balls labneh Drizzle of lemon olive oil or regular Pinch chilli Salt and black pepper Method Whisk ingredients together, taste and season. Metropol September 13, 2018 57

How common are Moroccan restaurants in New Zealand? I had the privilege to open New Zealand’s first Moroccan restaurant in 2002, here in Christchurch. It was a request from my friend, NZ celebrity-chef Peta Mathias. I wanted to give something back to New Zealand. We both thought it would be a great addition to New Zealand’s cuisine-scene. Before that, ‘Moroccan cuisine’ was a mysterious concept. Since then I’ve known about one other opening in Wellington. For over 20 years now I’ve not heard about any other qualified Moroccan Chefs residing in New Zealand. What is your signature dish at Mosaic by Simo? Do you ever cook this at home? My signature dishes have to be all the slow-cooked ones such as Lamb Tagine and Preserved Lemon Chicken Tagine. They result from slow cooking methods over at least three hours. Luxurious flavours and delectable tenderness are achieved with patience and skill. Yes, our children love Moroccan food so it’s regularly on our table. Where do you go to eat out when you’re not at Mosaic? I appreciate good food made with love, and I go only to where I know the chef or the restaurant owner. I do like Mediterranean cuisine, so Casa Nostradamus, The Birdwood, Town Tonic, and my favourites – Cooking with Gas and the Astro lounge.

Making Moroccan magic As we hunt for healthier takeaway options and balanced diets, Moroccan cuisine is increasingly hitting the consumer consciousness. We catch up with Simo Abbari from Christchurch’s very own Mosaic by Simo about this culinary revolution .

What are your most immediate foody goals? I’m now mainly focusing on developing my Simo’s brand. Our latest adventure and addition to Mosaic by Simo in Addington and the city stores is Chez Simo Cafe and Bistro at 399 Ilam Rd. Simos has also just taken the award-winning Pukeko Junction cafe under our brand, where we’ll be launching our new spring menu.

Choose to explore our ingenious Gumption menu prepared by our Internationally trained Culinary team including our specialist Pastry Chef. What is your background in food and how did your love of Moroccan fare come about? My love of Moroccan cuisine originates in childhood, from growing up in my homeland, Morocco. I’m a chef who graduated in 1987 from a French hotel school with a three-year diploma in French cuisine.

npretentiously industrialvibed and operating from a previous shop corner, The Birdwood, or centre-forsuperior-sustenance caters to both body and soul with its eatery for breakfast, brunch and lunch, and its pizzeria for slightly later in the day. Not too much later, mind. Establishment owners, Sarah and Nick Freeman have designed this to be as youth-friendly as Italy itself. Therefore the pizzeria is open from 4pm, when all-age hunger seems to strike, right through till 10pm, and from 3pm from Friday to Sunday. And if a significant other just wants to pick up a gorgeous meal without eating out, there’s an extensive takeaway pizza menu, as well as Three Boys beers on tap for

whiling away the short wait. Basically, this is the true Italian foodie experience, with healthy deliciousness in the form of sourdough created traditionally and hand-stretched on site, and then cooked in the huge pizza oven. Coffee is also perfected here, with the sweet, nutty ‘Birdwood Blend’ used for white coffees and the ‘Triumphant Blend’ roasted for black, characterised by dark chocolate notes. Ingredients are ideal. Gluten-free and vegan options abound. The pizza chefs are Italian. The décor includes comfortable, big-booth seating. The building lies gloriously to the sun, now with heated outdoor courtyards. Perfecto!

home VINYL DESIGN HONEYCOMB PATTERN WALL DECAL

I

t may sound scary, but the reality of wallpaper these days is exciting and energising. If you’re timid about giving pattern a go, ask yourself what’s the worst that can happen? Maybe a badly applied paper, but you can engineer-out that possibility by hiring a pro.

Don’t hold back if you don’t want to

GeometricVibes By Liesl Johnstone

This is a recipe for cool vibes at home: a blast of geometric wallpaper. ‘Blast’ is a technical term for one wall, but don’t hold back if you don’t want to. Go ahead and wallpaper the whole room.

Interior design shops are a great place to start. How big a pattern do you want to live with? Check out papers and room schemes online, and notice something? Geometric papers are actually easy on the eye, particularly in pale incarnations. Papering one wall can define a part of the room in a vertical way that nothing else can. Rugs do the same horizontally, delineating floor spaces. Pattern can work for you in unexpected ways. It’s helpful to drop all of your stylistic preconceptions, and let your eye be the judge. You see, large (and therefore sparse) geometric prints can work wonders in small rooms. It might feel safer to use a small repeating print, but the sum total is actually a busier, more cluttered feel. But even clutter can sometimes be wonderful. There really are no rules. For instance, a tiny-print wall can be ‘decluttered’ visually by the addition of a large mirror. If at first you’re not content, add or subtract other elements.

Fresh new house plans out now. Our already huge range of house plan designs is growing, meaning you have even more choice. Simply choose a plan and go with it, or use one as a starting point and customise it to suit. The choice is yours. Get inspired at orangehomes.co.nz

Creating an ‘extraordinary’city There has to be a point of difference,” says Jason Whitelaw, hospitality specialist, developer, builder, foodie and regular globetrotter. ason practices what he preaches; even back in in his living in London days, he ran an upmarket Mayfair pub – so far, very Kiwi, but Jason’s pub became renowned for hosting the a-listers. It was, after all, none other than Guy Ritchie’s establishment, The Punchbowl in Farm Street. Jason clearly has his finger on the pulse and he knows the places that we are seeking before we do to enjoy good food, drink and style. Our city’s rebuild has attracted criticism for an obsession with glass and steel, missing the opportunity for creating an ‘extraordinary’ Christchurch. Jason however, seems to be onto it. His current hospo masterstroke is Louis Champagne and Oyster Bar. Sophisticated but not overblown, its owner, like Louis XV, is keen on architecture, design and innovation and Jason has produced one of Christchurch’s most stunning and elegant bars around. Having had a lot to do with horse racing, combining champagne and glamour, naturally there is a focus on Cup Week at Louis, with events held right 74 September 13, 2018 Metropol

through the spring carnival, starting with Melbourne Cup through to the Hagley Park Polo in January. Next door is Red Light District, which is cleverly concealed behind the drycleaner’s façade, Charlie Winston’s of Chelsea. Themed around a Chinese opium den with an emphasis on high-end cocktails, Red Light District captures the atmosphere and character that those of us who come of age in Christchurch have been craving for these past eight years. New venture You Hanoi Me, Pho Disco and Honky Tonk will complete the trifecta in the foodie, cocktail destination that is the Vicinity Precinct on Victoria Street. Despite recent negative press about the street, business is booming and may just be due to Jason’s insight. With another new destination looming for Jason’s Hospitality Group, Bar Bar Black Sheep Ltd sees the old Saggio site, a gentle stroll away, set to be a new Greek restaurant that Jason is launching. Jason really is diverse and and burns the candle at both ends; developing and building keeps him extremely busy with projects on all around town. From

the 300 worker accommodation that is the innovative Workotel in Riccarton, to hugely successful developments like Flemington and Clearwater Springs, Jason keeps going and has recently launced his latest project, Verdeco Park at Lincoln. This is set to be New Zealand’s first ‘Wellness Subdivision’ and Jason says our country is making great strides in environmental sustainability. “But I want to extend that to the whole development, from the ground up,” he adds. With innovative design and eco management, this could possibly be a benchmark for developers going forward. It’s obvious that Jason has worked hard. A strong work ethic and ‘blue sky thinking’ enables him to put these deals together and produce some quite extraordinary venues. An ability to see what we want and execute it has put both himself and his projects firmly on the map in Christchurch and it appears that there is more to come – so watch this space.

Top quality trending

T

he company recently garnered three gold medals and two silvers from its five entries. Home Trends Builders is accustomed to such success, despite the fact that the number of entries keeps increasing. After thirty years of industry experience, HTB Company Director Peter de Gouw says he’s able to maintain lofty standards because of his skillful, loyal staff teams. Every foreman and builder takes pride in their workmanship. Add to that certain rules, such as edgy yet practical architectural design, a variety of highly resolved finishes, plus bluechip locations, and the recipe for quality is complete. “Our homes definitely take cues from their sites, which is incredibly important at the concept-design stage,” Peter says. And because landscaping is all part of the turn-key package, Home Trends Builders is able to fulfil the design element many are seeking; that wow-factor entertaining space. “We’re finding that many buyers want luxurious living environments. Demand’s there for quality exterior tiling, high-end claddings, designer wardrobes and bespoke bathrooms for every bedroom.” With recent homes measuring between 220 and 280m2 in floor area, Home Trends Builders is currently working on an even larger river-frontage project, along with a stream of contract builds and re-builds. For every single project, the highest construction standards remain paramount. Visit www.hometrendsbuilders.co.nz.

open themselves up to unforeseen risk. As architects, it is in our best interests to help our clients avoid potential pitfalls and to make the design process as pleasurable and productive as possible. As part of our service, we often provide guidance on selecting a trusted builder and how to interpret the contracts. The best builders will already have a strong track record and reliable working relationships with designers and subcontractors. Who you choose to work with can make such a big difference to the final outcome. Selecting a build and design team with a strong and consistent record of success, and preferably a history of working together, is the ideal for achieving a great home that will fit you and your lifestyle. It requires a robust, collaborative approach that demands clarity on key factors including the brief, the budget and design parameters. Of course, the financial risks are not the only issues you will need to be mindful of on your journey towards your new dream home. Poor design, inadequate communication, inferior materials and construction techniques can result in a home that falls well short of original expectations, with value negatively affected. The significance of selecting the right design and build team simply cannot be ignored. Protecting your investment from risk requires a multifaceted approach and we

believe the broader solution lies in building a home not just for today but for the future. A well thought out design is intrinsic to that goal, but it also means choosing quality, reputable materials that will endure. For example, cladding that has stood the test of time rather than selecting the latest trendy product on the market. At the same time, it’s about having the discernment to embrace quality innovations where they offer real advantages. There are so many options when it comes to deciding on your preferred building methodology, ranging from prefabrication to low energy use buildings.

Although good design should never be forfeited, it makes sense to favour a low maintenance, low energy input home. It is part of futureproofing your investment to seek a design and build that will produce a house well above current code on features such as insulation and energy efficiency. Risk will evaporate if the fundamentals are addressed, achieving sustainable, inspiring results. If value is placed in the design process, you ensure this transpires into the end product, creating a home that reflects the significant investment that it is. www.caarc.co.nz

The annual bout of spring fever By Terra Viva Director Peter Worsp

It happens every year without fail! Looking out at the dismal garden on a grey July day I often wonder if we’ll summon the enthusiasm to ‘attack’ the garden once again. But sure enough, by mid-August we’re suddenly buzzing around like worker bees, dreaming of summer vegetables and flowering colour everywhere.

S

o how do we harness this ‘infectious enthusiasm’ to transform the dormant winter garden into a thing of beauty – and a source of nutritious deliciousness? Take a stroll round the garden, make a list of what needs doing, stick it on the fridge and tick the completed jobs – very satisfying! The Constant Gardener at home is always the first to catch ‘Spring Fever’, even before the weather warms. Already she’s created two new raised strawberry beds; strawberries love moist but well-drained soil however, the traditional ‘mounded’ rows can result in uneven watering. Luckily, we love brussel sprouts – we’ve certainly eaten truckloads lately. “We have to finish them,” said The Constant Gardener, “I need the space for the blueberries”. The key is eating them small, cut into quarters, cooked with olive oil, bacon and

hazel nuts, and with a fried egg on top – the combo makes for a winning brunch dish. “The answer lies in the soil,” was the catchline in an old radio programme, and it still holds true. Preparation is everything, particularly for vegetables, so dig the soil over to a spade depth and mix in sheep pellets, compost, and Real Blood & Bone (double the strength of the regular product). During the season, use a side dressing of a general plant food like Nitrophoska Blue. “Grow what you eat!” is a good guide for planting – no point in growing varieties you don’t like. Potatoes can be sprouted now; broccoli is easy and quick; lettuces handle cooler conditions; beetroot is happy from September on; spinach and silverbeet are reliable standbys; peas thrive in spring, and pak choi prefers the moderate

temperatures of spring and autumn. All herbs can be planted now but keep basil and tomatoes in a warm sheltered spot like a glasshouse or the kitchen windowsill. Dividing the vege garden into a few smaller beds (raised is great) rather than one big area makes access much easier and less challenging to maintain. Roses are often the most popular plant in the flower garden and rightly so with their six months of colour, their scent, and their long vase life. The key to success with roses is water, plus regular feeding, plus a good spray regime. Summer annuals are the best way to reinforce garden colour schemes and the choice is huge with petunias, lobelia, impatiens and antirrhinums in a huge range of colours. Summer’s coming, so grow your own sanctuary! Metropol September 13, 2018 81

Window Treatment Overhaul “Twilight drops her curtain down and pins it with a star,” Lucy Maud Montgomery once said. If you are pulling your curtains at twilight and they fall off the rail, then a swift visit to Officine Voluptas, is written in your stars this spring.

Y

ou’ll find everything you need to start from the beginning in your window treatment overhaul and it’s on special too: with every new curtain order, Assistant Manager Chelsea Zhang is offering free aluminium tracking, free blackout-weight lining and, to clients in Christchurch and its surrounds, there is also free hanging and, of course, free measure and quote. As if that wasn’t enticement enough, a further offer celebrates the opening of the gorgeous new showroom at 35 Riccarton Road - simply mention that you have read about Officine Voluptas in Metropol Magazine to receive a further 20 percent discount on all new orders, which applies to everything in store! “You can achieve your dream home with our curtains and blinds,” Chelsea says. The showroom is vibrant with curtain

options in every colour, weight and texture, with fabrics varying from velvet, to silk, to sheer, and each room in your home is catered for. Chelsea is excited to present new fabrics to add to the already extensive range from New Zealand, Australia and China. There is a very popular checked chenille, so soft and warm and it comes in three stylish colourways: navy and cream, pale brown and cream and cream with yellow. A gorgeous new Coated Linen is already blackout weight – there’s no need to line it – and you can choose from dove grey or soft brown. Most of the fabrics in the showroom are presented in full drop, rather than as tiny fabric samples so you get a graceful preview of the finished effect of the curtain. You can also appreciate the quality, weight and texture of every fabric

while you are making decisions. “We love to help people enhance the value of their home,” Chelsea says. “Our clients receive high quality curtains and at a very reasonable price.” The curtains, blinds, and sunscreens are all created in the company’s own factory in Auckland, ensuring clients receive a very competitive price. Most fabrics are always in stock, but should you choose something that isn’t, it will be air freighted in immediately. Where fabric is in stock, your new curtains and blinds can be hanging at your windows in under three weeks. Officine Voluptas offers a two-year warranty on all its fabrics and installation. The team would love to see Christchurch people in their new showroom and for out of town clients to phone 03-349 4888, or email officinevoluptasnz@gmail.com.

very year the company achieves at the Master Builders House of the Year Awards for Canterbury. This year, a customer’s home was one of the top 100 Gold Reserve finalists in the country selected for the National finals and another received the Gold Award for its category. Each Peter Ray home is a unique build. “Our point of difference is our customers are encouraged to put their own thumb print on their new home,” General Manager John Baugh says. “The owners are really proud of the awards, as they themselves have input.” A Lincoln luxury family home won Reserve Gold in the Volume/ Group Housing New Homes between $450,000 and $700,000 category. A head turner, it impressed judges with great street appeal and its internal timber-clad deck with access via large sliding doors to the living areas, giving privacy and shelter from the easterly. The roof contrasted with the white plaster exterior and vertical detailing - the colour scheme flowing internally with greys and white, with feature bulkhead ceilings to personalise. An executive kitchen is at the home’s heart, with custom-designed pendant lighting. In Halswell, another customer’s home was awarded Gold in Volume/Group Housing New Home up to $450,000 category. A gabled roof complements vertical cedar cladding, designer brick and schist. A feature entrance way has a raking soffit, leading to a highceiling hallway entrance. Judges were impressed with the enviable functional living, including ample storage. An elegant kitchen is adjacent to bi-fold doors which also leads to the social internal, timber-clad courtyard. This four-bedroom, two living area home exudes contemporary flair. “Customers work with our inhouse consultants and designers,” John says. “When they first come in, we’ll design a complimentary concept plan and layout as a starting point. It costs the customer no money to design a home unique to them. They receive a brochure with over 40 plans – a

starting point for ideas, before working with our designers, whose experience helps put together whatever style is wanted. Our colour consultant then ties it all together.” Peter Ray Homes specialises in residential building, working with first home KiwiSaver customers through to the upper-end architectural twostorey Fendalton abode. Peter Ray Homes has a strong presence in rural sectors, especially the Selwyn regions of Lincoln, Rolleston and Prebbleton. Well-known suppliers are involved in all the subcontracting work, offering quality workmanship. Peace of mind is assured as they design and build to your budget. “We offer a fixed-price contract. When you sign up there is a fixed figure at the bottom of the quote and, unless changes are requested, this will not change.” www.peterrayhomes.co.nz

estled in North Canterbury, the L-shaped, barn-style abode won Gold at the recent Canterbury Master Builders House of the Year awards, in the up to $450,000 category. Described by judges

as a ‘family home punching above its weight’ and ‘oozing style,’ it has also been named a Gold Reserve finalist for the national awards in November – representing the top 100 entrants from across the country.

Chris Keane established Keane Building in 2009, after completing his apprenticeship with his father, a local builder who serviced the Hurunui district for more then 30 years. The depth of experience and knowledge he

home gained during this time has proven invaluable in managing his own company today, which he runs with his wife Beth, leading a team of six builders. A true family business, his two brothers are part of the exceptional team – one of them drawing the concept for the award-winning home. “We are over the moon and immensely proud,” Beth says. “Without our team’s commitment, dedication and expert craftsmanship, pitting ourselves against the best in the region – and the country – would not have been possible. Bespoke and architectural new builds is where our strengths lie, and the quality of our workmanship is backed up by the award.” Although a compact total footprint of 131sqm, nothing is compromised in the spacious design. Clad in black Colorsteel and cedar shiplap cladding, the three-bedroom, twobathroom home features a darkwalled kitchen with white-trimmed ply cabinetry, a concrete benchtop and flooring. Another stand-out element of the home is one of the bathroom’s mismatched patterned

cement tiles, which create a stunning contrast to the white subway tiles, black-framed shower and black tapware. “The home was designed beautifully by Matt and crafted by our builders with outstanding attention to detail. Being recognised for our hard work is a real pat on the back and a true reflection of Chris’s perfectionism.” Running the business by the adage, ‘less stress, built best,’ Chris prides himself on providing a personal one-on-one service, with exceptional communication and dedication to every project. “I work really closely with my clients and I’m passionate about delivering them with the ultimate result, through meticulous planning, throughout each stage of the process.” Ensuring the entire experience is fun and enjoyable, from start to finish, is very important to Chris, Beth adds. “Building relationships is such a strength of his that clients turn into friends.” For more information, visit keanebuilding.co.nz, follow on Facebook and Instagram, or phone Chris and Beth on 0800 303 598.

Looking Sharp By Melinda Collins

While we’ve long been suckers for succulents, it seems the cactus has knocked these popular perennials off their perch.

B

ecause, although the cactus has long been dominating the wardrobes of the most fashion-forward, it’s quickly making its way through the homewares sphere, where you’ll find it in prints on bedspreads and other furnishings, but importantly, the real thing too is here to stay. Despite the fact that few plants are as easy-care as the cactus, there are some rookie mistakes that can be made when it comes to caring for these sharp staples. Not providing enough sunlight is at the top of this list. Your cactus will make itself at home on a windowsill because, although it only needs to be watered now and then, sunlight is key to its survival. They are also night-workers, producing oxygen while we sleep, which makes them a popular addition to the bedroom.

runing may seem simple, but there’s a science to it. A great gardener will have the knack. A professional prune up is a sensible spring start, to help produce healthy roses and abundant summer fruits. Hedges will be starting to bush out in all directions, so enlist someone with the right tools to tackle this arduous job, safely. Muddy-patched lawns might need re-sowing and fertilising as it’ll soon be time to relax on a carpet of lush green. Just like a vacuumed floor or well-made bed, gardens look finished with beautiful lawns. It’s party time for weeds, so a great gardener will remove them by their resilient roots and create a cunning plan to mitigate an invasion of the weedy kind! They can prepare and replenish soils, mulch and fertilise, for a vegetable garden that reaps tasty rewards. Savvy advice for ongoing garden maintenance and problems make these greenfingered professionals worth every penny! Mossy, mouldy paths and decks, suddenly seems so drearily drab in spring sunshine, so get someone in to carefully water-blast and freshly stain the deck, and see to those messy jobs, like clearing spouting and drains, and places rotting foliage and debris have accumulated. If an area just doesn’t seem to work and no solution springs to mind, landscapers are creative creatures, brimming with practical, aesthetic ideas. Perhaps a patio, pergola, paved pathway, barbeque area, artwork, lighting, or releveling and terracing. Adding the right trees and shrubbery can shelter exposed areas, or add privacy and colour. Make the garden the most magnificent room of the home this summer!

Under the bonnet, the Swift Sport leaves behind its naturally aspirated roots in favour of turbo power. The Boosterjet 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine, despite having a name like a toddler’s car seat, is a real peach. Power and torque have also gone up to 103kW and 230Nm respectively, while returning 6.1L/100km. Inside, the semi-bucket seats feel and look the business while still managing to house your rear in relative comfort. You sit relatively high but despite this there is still sufficient headroom. All interior features feel slightly angled toward the driver too which is a nice touch. Moving off and you realise that extra torque thanks to the turbo was long needed. At speed I found myself short shifting below 4,000rpm most of the time. A stark contrast from the previous 1.6-litre N/A model, which left you ringing its neck right to the redline in order for you to make serious progress. Plus, heel and toe shifting via the short throw six speed box is great fun. The term go-kart was invented for a car like the Swift Sport. With acceleration likened to a jack russell pulling at the lead, well weighted direct steering, and the ability to corner almost flat thanks to its lowered stance and Suzuki’s new HEARTECT chassis, you have the confidence to push hard and know it won’t bite back. Rides much better too. At $28,500, 2018 Swift Sport ticks so many boxes, more so than any of its predecessors. By making the new car easier to live daily without sacrificing the fun, Suzuki has churned out yet another epic little all-rounder. In terms of bang for your buck, they seldom come better than this.

Motors Founder and Manager Jack Thompson says the event will give young visionaries the experience of creating a unique product

and finding ways to promote it. “The St Thomas of Canterbury College students carried out research to come up with a product idea that’s sustainable,

eco-friendly and in demand, and hereby execute production and sales through marketing,” Jack says. Once the product has been created and a market found, the next step is for the students to promote their hard work at public events such as the Riccarton Market. With a profit share from the students’ product going to the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust to support the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, these future leaders in business are working hard to not only blaze their own trail but ensure others can too. What skills are needed to be able to repair these vehicles? Completed qualification in automotive engineering. This enables the technician to build their skills by utilising ongoing training to embrace new technology. What are some of the major changes you have seen in the motor industry over the years? One that stands out to me is the increased use of plastic in all vehicles, including engine, transmission and major body components. Another change is the tremendous progression of electronic technology in the vehicle much of it operating inconspicuously and unseen by the motorist.

European Evolution Metropol catches up with Kevin Burt, who has provided specialist Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi repairs for 35 years.

What is your opinion on the electric vehicle and its future? As with most aspects of the motor vehicle, electric vehicles are not new. In fact, Henry Ford’s wife Clara owned and operated an electric vehicle as early as 1908. Henry Ford’s Model T did not have an electric starter, so the electric car was simpler to operate. The advent of the “self-starter” led to the demise of the electric car. The modern electric car has its place, but I feel the technology needed will have to improve greatly to displace the internal combustion engine in the near future.

seamless merging of intuitive and physical design. Falling in the fine space between tradition and modernity, the interior of the Vision EQ Silver Arrow represents the values of Progressive Luxury, a constant theme with Mercedes in its core brand but even more effervescent in its prototypes. The design idiom combines timeless aesthetic appeal with futuristic vision. When the driver’s cockpit is folded forwards, it provides a view of the surprisingly wide interior. Double screen and virtual racing, the driver of the Vision EQ Silver Arrow is encompassed by a large panoramic screen on which a 3D image of the surroundings is projected from behind, giving it an almost computer game feel from the cockpit. For this a virtual racetrack is superimposed onto the real roadway on the panoramic screen and the driver sees their opponent either ahead of them or behind them as a “ghost”. The Virtual Race Coach assistance function helps you become a better driver by giving instructions during the race. This soundless Silver Arrow has an output of 550 kW (750 hp). That’s about 25 percemt faster than a Ferrari 458, so not one to be trifled with. Retro art at its finest. Now, how do I get a test drive?

he one-seater vehicle also pays homage to the successful record-breaking W 125 car from 1937. A work of art as much as a high specification vehicle, the paintwork in alubeam silver is reminiscent of the historic Silver Arrows which, for weight reasons, did not have a white paint layer. The interior is dominated by traditional, high-quality materials such as genuine leather, polished aluminium and solid walnut. The digital cockpit, meanwhile, points directly into the future; it includes a curved panoramic screen with back projection, as well as a touchscreen integrated into the steering wheel. This year’s Monterey Car Week was a real flashback to early 1900s in style, with several models unveiled harking back to that time. “Over 80 years ago, the historic Silver Arrows demonstrated that MercedesBenz was a pioneer when it came to speed thanks, among other things, to their streamlined shape,” says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG. The EQ brand is shaped by a distinctly avant-garde aesthetic. This arises from the combination of a previously unknown beauty, the conscious clash of digital and analogue elements, as well as the
